When is the best time for a Colorado wine tour?
There’s no wrong time of year to book a Colorado wine tour, but you may find certain seasons more enjoyable than others.
In the winter, some Colorado wineries offer tours but the summer and fall harvest seasons are the best times to visit for the full wine-tasting experience.
Spring is also a great time of year to take a tour of the winery as it offers a bit more peace and quiet as you’ll find fewer people visiting.
In addition, the spring weather is still quite cool but there are more activities and tastings available than in the winter months.
How many wineries are in Colorado?
According to this fact sheet about the Colorado wine industry , there are over 150 licensed wineries in the state.
And near Denver in particular there are just over 100 wineries, many of which offer gorgeous scenery along with delicious wine tastings.
These figures includes about twenty cideries and other similar producers thanks to the lush growing seasons.
Colorado-grown grapes are deliciously unique and make perfect pairings with wines like cabernet franc or even dessert wines.
Does Colorado have good wineries?
Yes, Colorado’s wine country is like none in North America! The state is home to popular wine tasting rooms and vineyards, like Holy Cross Abbey and the Colorado Mountain Winefest .
But Palisade is considered the wine capital of the state and is located about an hour away from the Utah border. Palisade Wineries are especially a must-visit for any Colorado wine tour.
For the largest vineyard in Colorado, check out Colorado Cellars Winery which is an award-winning, family owned winery founded in 1978. Some of their most popular wine brands today include Rocky Mountain Vineyards!
We hope this list of the best Colorado wine tours tantalizes your taste buds and helps you discover the amazing wine regions of the state.

Roxann was our winery tour guide and Holy moly what a fantastic day! Communication was great and when she picked us up for our tour she was right on time. She took the time to ask about our wine preferences and tailored the day to those. Her knowledge of the different wineries and surrounding areas, including some history about Grand Junction was so interesting and helpful. We felt like we spent the day with a friend. It was simply a perfect day, thanks to Roxann!

Thank you for the fabulous review. It helps so much to let other people know that are interested in taking my Wine Tour. They do want to see real people having a great experience. I love my job. I love what I do. Thank you!
We visited Grand Junction and Palisade recently for five days. One of our main goals was to do a wine tour. Roxann exceeded our expectations. She was prompt, easy to work with, very knowledgeable about the wines and vineyards, and she knows the vintners. She is also a hoot! We had a wonderful time visiting 6 vineyards with lunch. Roxann did the driving so we could relax and enjoy ourselves. I highly recommend the personalized wine tour with Grand Junction Tours and Roxann. You will not be disappointed.

I can truly say that Roxann has been my favorite tour guide of all time! Not only was she very knowledgeable and reasonably priced, but she was also super fun and took great pictures of our wine tour! My friend and I wouldn't have had as much fun as we did without her! If you're looking for someone who knows the area and wineries well, along with being accommodating, personable, and fun, then Roxann is your guide!

We had a fantastic time with Roxann on our Grand Junction wine tour! We travelled from Virginia to Grand Junction and enjoyed having a private tour guide and driver for the day. This was definitely the highlight of our trip.

Thank you so much for the positive review, my heart is overflowing with gratitude! It is wonderful people like you that makes me love and enjoy my job that much more.
This was my first guided tour and with a sommelier in training. High energy and great knowledge of the wines and the area that she was giving the tour. It really took the stress out and I could relax and enjoy the countryside. This is a much safer alternative to wine tasting and it's only $30 an hour we ended up tipping Roxanne an extra 15. I would definitely suggest doing the Grand Junction to her the next time we go wine tasting.
We had a great time touring the wineries with Roxann. We had six of us looking for a fun afternoon and saw Grand Junction Tours on Yelp. Called Roxann about 12 o'clock and she took us touring at 2. Thank you Roxann for taking us on short notice.
Your are oh so welcome! Enjoy the rest of your weekend and good luck today up at Cameo
My wife and I spent a wonderful morning with Roxann in the colorado National Monument. Although it was a rainy day Roxann provided us with an outstanding tour. She expertly navigated the road and made numerous stops to point out various rock formations. She pointed out the rain would be short lived which it was. This made for outstanding photos! Thank you...
Last weekend, a friend and I had a 4 hour tour of the local wineries with Roxanne. Our tour exceeded all expectations and we had a wonderful day. Roxanne is so knowledgable about the wines and wineries that truly enhanced our experiences at each and every winery. She is completely professional and a lot of fun. I highly recommend her and am looking forward to my next tour with her!

You’re welcome Katie. I enjoyed you ladies and look forward to meeting up with you in Glenwood.
We booked Roxanne to lead the two of us on a wine tasting tour this week (Oct. 2018). She carefully asked about our preferences (I like white, my wife likes red, and neither of us are wine sophisticates). She also asked how long a tour we wanted to take. The tour is priced on a per-hour basis (and very reasonable) and she was careful not to 'run the meter'. With that she suggested wineries to try, giving us background on each of them -- their specialties, their history, etc. (she assured us she doesn't receive commissions from any of them). She accompanied us to the tasting rooms, introducing the staff, and answering our questions. She made the whole tour seem like a small, fun party. It was the highlight of our trip to Grand Junction and if we manage to go back next year, we'll absolutely do the whole tour again!

Guide to Wine and Wineries in Colorado
Northern California isn’t the only place in America known for great wine anymore. Thanks to Coloradoan’s passion for quality, wine here is award winning. You can find a variety of styles, with most of the local grapes grown on the Western Slope.
Today there are over one hundred wineries across the state, situated everywhere from the Front Range and Western Slope, to mountain towns such as Steamboat Springs and Bailey. Some even offer lodging on-site . The Colorado Wine Industry Development Board states:
Colorado’s Rocky Mountains are blessed with warm days, cool nights and low humidity – perfect conditions for cultivating wine grapes with the complex character and chemistry needed to produce award-winning wines.
Wine got started on the Western Slope more than 100 years ago when the first vineyards were planted. However, during Prohibition in the 1920s, vineyards were replaced with fruit orchids. In the last few decades, vineyards have once again reclaimed their soil on land around Palisade, as well as across Colorado. Winemaking is alive and well in the Rocky Mountains!
Elevations on the Western Slope range from 4,500 to 6,000 feet, making the vineyards some of the highest on earth. The dry climate helps keep plant disease low, the high elevation and 300+ sunny days gives the grapes great flavor and complexion, and the cool nighttime temperature encourages acid retention, crucial to the best winemaking.
Guided Wine Tours
Several companies offer guided tours of Colorado wine country. Sit back and relax as you’re shuttled safely around the vineyards. Enjoy wine tastings around Palisade with your friends and family.
American Spirit Shuttle offers winery tours in the Grand and North Fork river, and Surface Creek valleys of Western Colorado. They also give Agricultural and Brewilery™ tours, as well as trips to national parks, monuments, and areas of Eastern Utah.

The Colorado Wine Train Pairs Memorable Scenery with Local Wines
Colorado Group Tour Planner , Food & Beverage
The three-day Colorado Wine Train experience shows off Colorado’s stunning beauty and introduces passengers to some of the state’s best wines.
On the surface the Colorado Wine Train looked to be a fairly logical concept. Grand Junction has wineries, and Amtrak’s California Zephyr stops in Denver and Grand Junction on its journey from Chicago to San Francisco. But logic sometimes needs some hard work before it becomes reality. Barb Bowman and Debbie Kovalik, formerly with the Grand Junction Visitor and Convention Bureau, were up to the task.
Bowman states, “We needed to convince our board of directors that a Wine Train was a good marketing idea. One train ride and they were convinced.” A need for a strong marketing partner to handle the reservations was also a necessity, so AAA Colorado came onboard. The final challenge, Bowman continues, “was convincing Amtrak that adding a private car in Chicago for the round-trip made good business sense.” Forty wine trains later, there’s as much excitement today as there was on that first train.
The experience begins with a continental breakfast before the Wine Train departs Denver’s Union Station. The legs of the journey are a Rocky Mountain climb and stops in Winter Park, Glenwood Springs and Grand Junction. Passengers will travel through numerous tunnels and view the Colorado River through the Rocky Mountains. Many of the sites are otherwise inaccessible. To say the scenery is spectacular may be an understatement. From mountain vistas and occasional wildlife to peach and grape vineyards, there is wonderful variety to the landscape. The train ride is just the beginning.
Joining the ride in Denver is Dave Tewksbury. A retired restaurateur and well-recognized sommelier, Dave’s Wine 101 seminar is informative for both newcomers and connoisseurs. Talks by representatives from the Colorado wine industry share the viti-cultural history of the region.
Toasting on the Royal Gorge Route
Lunch is served near Glenwood Springs, where the Zephyr will stop and representatives from local wineries come onboard and join the fun. Two or three wines from the region are paired with cheese and chocolates. Passengers get off the train in Grand Junction and check into a local hotel for a two-night stay. Dinner tonight is at any of Grand Junction’s award-winning restaurants.
Following breakfast the next morning, six of the more than 20 Grand Valley wineries are visited. Tours and tastings are a wonderful introduction to this American Viticultural Area. Tonight, participants are hosted at a local winery for a Wine Maker’s Dinner. The vineyard owner or winemaker will share why which wines were paired with every menu item.
The third day provides an opportunity to explore Grand Junction, including local downtown shopping, the nearby Colorado National Monument or the Museum of Western Colorado.
There may even be time to sneak in more vineyard visits. Small groups will have van transportation to local vineyards and attractions in addition to motorcoach transportation back to Denver.
