Operated by One Life Adventures

OUR STORY: At One Life, we’ve always seen tourism as an opportunity to make a difference. We wanted to prove that tourism was more than seeing places you could have never imagined and to show people that travel could be impactful, ethical and quite literally, life changing. So that’s what we did; we put local communities, the environment and personal development at the heart of our operations and five years later, we’ve run life changing trips for thousands of travellers and are currently rated #1 worldwide. We started out in the Philippines, moved over to Sri Lanka just a year later and then launched Japan the following year. All three tours are now multi-award winning and our Japan trip was even rated #1 worldwide in 2019. We just opened two brand new tours in Indonesia and India and extended the massively popular Japan trip by another four days (we just had to make it longer!). HOW WE OPERATE: We choose to keep our group sizes small, to allow for more meaningful connections to be made between our guests and the local communities we travel through and to keep your experience as personal as possible. Immersing our guests in the local culture, while offering the opportunity to relax and reset in some of the most stunning locations the planet has to offer is what it’s all about. We’ve searched high and low to find unique activities and one off, special accommodations that will leave you with memories to last a lifetime. From kendo classes in Japan with a descendent of a real samurai, to waking up on your own private beach at our beach camp in the Philippines, these are unique adventures you’ll be talking about for years. All inclusions are listed on your booking page and you’ll receive all the info you need for your travels before you even step foot in the country. No hidden costs and plenty of time to prepare. Your epic One Life group leader and our legendary local guides are there to help you have the time of your life, every step of the way. Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride - we promise it’s a good one! WHY TOUR WITH US: We put our money where our mouth is and put our guests, the local communities and the environment at the very centre of what we do. Our guests have rated us so highly over the years that we’ve won multiple awards both for our life changing trips AND for the guides that run them. 2 of TourRadar's top 3 Guides of the Year in 2018 were One Life Adventures guides and all 3 of our longest running tours are rated #1 in their respective destinations. We are committed to keeping our tours environmentally friendly by keeping plastic waste to a minimum. On our tours you’ll find our suppliers providing eco-friendly alternatives where possible, our accommodation providers providing refill stations and you’ll even be able to buy our plastic free merchandise. We stock reusable water bottles, tote bags, metal straws and even washable bamboo cotton face masks. What’s more, the profits from these items go towards the community projects we set up and run in each country - from school development projects to spay/neuter programmes for stray animals! When you tour with us, you know your money is going back into the local communities you're visiting - where it's needed most. OUR COVID POLICIES: All our tours are operating under the direction of local COVID regulations, with reduced tour numbers in the majority of our destinations and all tour guides having had specific COVID training to ensure the safety of our guests and the remote communities we visit. All guides and suppliers are equipped with hand sanitiser and hand washing stations, all transport is private-only where possible and all dorm rooms are operating at a reduced capacity. Should you wish to upgrade into a solo room, this is also possible in some of our destinations. Both our policies and those of our local suppliers have been updated due to COVID and these will be strictly adhered to in order to protect everyone as much as is possible when travel resumes.

Take It From a Travel Writer: These Are the 5 Essentials I Never Vacation Without — Plus, What I’m Buying Next

Prices start at just $8.

Travel + Leisure / Daisy Rodriguez

As a travel writer, I take great pride in my collection of in-flight and vacation packing must-haves that I refuse to leave my house without in the name of prioritizing comfort. I believe that even the shortest trips should still be as enjoyable as possible, and although I’m at a point where I feel both safe and relaxed while traveling, there’s always room to improve.

Since I don’t believe in gatekeeping, I’ve rounded up the five Amazon essentials that have transformed my travels for the better now that I have thousands of frequent flier miles under my belt — plus, the five items I can’t wait to buy next. From solo trips to vacations with friends, these products are guaranteed to make you feel more prepared for whatever may come — with prices starting as low as $8.

She’s Birdie The Original Personal Safety Alarm

Whether I’m enjoying my day-to-day life in New York City or traveling internationally on a solo trip to Portugal, I will never leave the house without this portable safety device firmly clipped to my keychain. The simple mechanism is designed to emit a blaring alarm once the pin is pulled, and after testing it on a number of occasions (never in an emergency, thankfully), I can confirm that it’s loud enough to draw attention from passersby for peace of mind if I’m in a compromising situation and need help. It’s great for travel — even by plane — and the device is secure enough that in my three years of owning it, I’ve never had the alarm go off by accident.

AiRunTech Waterproof Waist Pouch

Last year, I went on my first solo trip to Portugal , which left me in the unique predicament of figuring out how to enjoy my time splashing around in the surf without getting my gear stolen. Enter: the AiRunTech Waterproof Waist Pouch. This entirely waterproof pouch was perfect for keeping my phone and wallet safe during boat rides and dips in the ocean, so I never had to worry about returning to the shore only to find myself stranded without my essentials. I can confidently say that even when I’m traveling with friends, I’ll never leave my house for a beach vacation without this bag again — and right now, a two-pack is on sale at Amazon for a mere $13.

Anker Portable Charger

After a debacle last year during which my AirPods died ahead of my flight with no access to an outlet, I promptly ordered the top-selling Anker Portable Charger upon my arrival home and will never travel without it again. It’s not a given that you’ll be able to charge your phone or devices during a flight (or even at the airport), and whether you’re traveling alone or with friends, it’s always important to have access to your phone for safety purposes. This long-lasting charger boasts the capacity for more than two full charges and is designed with three ports so I can provide power to my phone and headphones at the same time.

SwissGear 1900 Scansmart TSA Laptop Backpack

I’ve been using this spacious laptop backpack since 2015, so it’s safe to say that it has stood the test of time throughout adventures across dozens of states and countries. The large main compartment has more than enough space for everything from a spare outfit to a ski helmet (it didn’t fit in my suitcase!), and a padded laptop compartment ensures that I never have to worry about damaging my electronics while I’m on the go. Plus, the variety of additional pockets on the sides and front of this comfortable backpack have proven to be the ideal spots to store my toiletries, medications, and other items for maximum organization and accessibility.

Hian Motion Sickness Glasses

Ever since my childhood, I’ve been plagued with motion sickness, and over the years it’s become nearly impossible for me to get into a car without the accompanying nausea and dizziness. However, that all changed when I discovered these glasses from Hian last year, and since then there hasn’t been a single trip I’ve taken without them. From a long, stop-and-go ride up to Breckenridge in Colorado, to a quick trip to Jones Beach in New York, these glasses stopped my reliance on Dramamine in its tracks. Plus, they’re only $8.

What I’m Buying Next

One of my hidden talents is that I can fall asleep nearly anywhere: plane, train, car, you name it. However, the catch is that while I may be soundly sleeping, my head continues to bob around, often resulting in a stiff neck upon arrival at my destination (not to mention it’s embarrassing). So, when I recently stumbled upon a neck pillow that attaches to the airplane headrest to firmly secure me in place, I knew I needed to add it to my shopping list ahead of my next flight. This incredibly supportive pillow from Cabeau is the solution I’ve been searching for when it comes to keeping my head propped up, and it’s adjustable for a wide range of travelers. It may be $50, but that’s a small price to pay for feeling well-rested after a red-eye.

Jisulife Handheld Mini 3-in-1 Fan

This best-selling 3-in-1 fan from Jisulife has been sitting in my Amazon cart for months now, but before I head to the beach this summer — or even the wedding I’m attending in August — I’ll be sure to finally make the purchase. Not only is this compact device a high-powered fan that easily fits into a back pocket, purse, or carry-on, but it also functions as a portable phone charger and flashlight. It offers up to 19 hours of cooling on a single charge, a fact which I can attest to since my friend brought it along with us on an unbearably hot trip to Italy several years ago. With two settings to choose from, it’s great even if you just need a light breeze.

Soundcore Anker Life Hybrid Active Noise-Canceling Headphones

More often than not, I find myself drawn into conversations with my seatmates on planes — and not always by choice. I will blame this in part on my friendly face, but also my lack of noise-canceling headphones. So while my AirPods will also be my go-to earbuds, I’m ready to make the investment in these Soundcore over-ear headphones while they’re on sale for just $50 at Amazon. Memory foam ear cups promise to provide unending comfort during even the longest flights, while 40 hours of play time on a single charge means there’s one less charger I’ll need to pack while on vacation. I can already sense that my most peaceful flight to date is right around the corner.

BleedStop First Aid Powder for Blood Clotting

I’m a relatively neurotic traveler, and after reading a recent article on Travel + Leisure touting this blood clotting powder as a must-pack according to a retired doctor, I immediately added the $15 formula to my cart. While it’s highly improbable that I’ll ever need to use it, this powder works to get bleeding under control in mere minutes, making it incredibly useful if I, or anyone around me, incurs a potentially life-threatening wound while hiking or in another scenario where medical aid isn’t readily available. Better safe than sorry.

Twelve South AirFly SE Bluetooth Audio Transmitter

With the amount that I’ve been traveling recently, it feels worthwhile to invest in this audio transmitter that will allow me to wear my AirPods while enjoying the in-flight entertainment, so I can say farewell to airline-issued headphones for good. The AirFly simply plugs into the screen on your airplane seatback, connecting to up to two pairs of headphones at the same time. I’m especially excited to use this device because it’s entirely cord-free, so I won’t become tangled with any of my seatmates if they need to head to the bathroom during the flight.

The Most Beautiful Stations on the Moscow Metro

one life one travel

You might have heard that there are some beautiful metro stations in Moscow. Soviet decorations, chandeliers, mosaic painting and statues are common in many of the stations. The good news is that the Moscow Metro does not cost a lot of money and many of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro are on the same line, so you can almost get on and off at each station to visit these. Over the New Year holidays, I had a free afternoon and decided to visit some of these stations. Check out what I found below…..

The main stations that you will want to visit are on the Number 5 line, also known as the Circle Line. An advantage of this line is that you can get to it very easily and quickly no matter where you are in Moscow. The announcements on the metro are in Russian as well as English so you don’t need to worry if your Russian language skills are not good.

If, like me, you arrive in Moscow via train from Kyiv , then you will arrive at a metro station which many Muscovites believe to be the most beautiful of them all…..

Kievskaya metro station was opened in 1954 and features white marble walls which curve upwards and have with large mosaics surrounded by a gold trim in a very classical style. The mosaics depict life in Ukraine and was designed by a Ukrainian who wanted to display Ukraine’s influence and contribution to Soviet Russia.

Belorusskaya

If you look at a map of the metro , you will want to go in a clockwise direction on the circle line. So you will want to get on the train going in the Barrikadnaya direction and not Park Kultury. Stay on this line until you reach the 2nd station, Belorusskaya. This station was built in 1952 and like Kievskaya also features white marble pylons and a plaster ceiling.

The ceiling features 12 mosaics in an octagonal shape depicting Belarusian life, while the tiling on the floor is said to resemble a Belarusian quilt. One of the passageway exits of the station has a statue called ‘Belarusian Partisans’ of three men wearing long coats, holding guns and carrying a flag.”

Mayakovskaya

To get to the next station, we need to change onto the green line (line 2) and go just one stop to the station of Mayakovskaya. This station has an art deco theme and, for some, resembles an elaborate ballroom. The columns are faced with stainless steel and pink rhodonite while the marble walls and ceiling have 34 mosaics with the theme “24-hour Soviet Sky. Apparently, Stalin resided here during the 2nd World War as the station was used as a command post for Moscow’s anti-aircraft regiment.

Novoslobodskaya

It’s time to get back on the metro and return to Belorusskaya. At Belorusskaya, change to the circle line again and continue clockwise to the next station, Novoslobodskaya. With its 32 stained glass panels, this station reminds me of a church. The panels were designed by Latvian artists and are surrounded by a brass border.

Prospekt Mira

Back on the metro and again just one stop until our next station, Prospekt Mira. This station was originally called Botanichesky Sad after the nearby Botanical Gardens of the Moscow State University. The pylons are covered in white marble and decorated with floral bas-relief friezes. The ceiling is decorated with casts and several cylindrical chandeliers.

Komsomolskaya

On the metro once more and once more we are going just one stop to the next station – Komsomolskaya. This station is famous for its its yellow ceiling. The chandeliers in this station are huge. The photos below do not do this station justice.  For me, this station resembles a presidential palace.  You hace to see it for yourself to truly appreciate it.

Because of it’s location, this is one of the busiest stations in the Moscow metro as it serves three of the main train stations in the city – Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky, and Kazansky so be prepared for a lot of people.

Elektrozavodskaya

When you are ready to leave Komsomolskaya metro station behind, then get back on the circle line and go one stop to Kurskaya and change to the blue line (line 3) and go to two stops to the Elektrozavodskaya station. This station gets it’s name from a nearby electric light bulb factory and has a somewhat industrial but also futuristic style, with 6 rows of circular lamps (there are 318 lamps in total). I think this is one of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro for how unique it is. The station was opened in 1944 after a delay because of the 2nd World War and features 12 marble bas-reliefs of the struggle on the home front during the war.

Ploschad Revolyutsii

Back on the metro line 3 (but in the other direction), getting off at the 3rd stop – Ploschad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). This is located underneath the square in Moscow of the same name and is a short walk from Red Square in the city centre. It is the perfect place to end a visit around Moscow’s metro. The station features red and yellow marble arches with a total of 76 sculptures in between each arch. The sculptures are supposed to represent the people of the Soviet Union and include soldiers, farmers, industrial workers, children etc… I noticed a lot of people touching the golden chicken in the photo below as well as the show of the woman. I am assuming that this is for good luck.

Kievskaya definitely caught me off guard. Didn’t know Moscow metro stations were THIS extravagant! Mayakovskaya is gorgeous too with the marble walls and mosaics. I might just need to book a flight over to admire all of these!

one life one travel

Do it! Kievskaya was my first introduction to the Moscow metro as I got an overnight train from Kyiv.

' src=

You know, in the States, all we ever hear is bad stuff about Russia. It’s nice to see other (and lovely!) dimensions of such a controversial place.

It’s the same in the UK which is why I prefer going to see somewhere and making up my own mind. It’s all ‘politics and bullshit’ as I say

' src=

I went to Moscow about 13years for Christmas and went to train stations, so I can see these amazing mosaics and chandeliers. I agree with you that are beautiful Stations for sure and I could of wandered around for days. I think Kievskaya is definitely my favourite out of them all and I even have some similar pictures as you.

I imagine Moscow would have been a little different 13 years ago but these stations have probably always looked beautiful

Food and Footprints

You chose some great stations for this write up! Beautiful details in these stations and would love to visit them sometime. Particularly like the Komsomolskaya station with that yellow ceiling!

Thank you very much. Komsomolskaya seems to be a lot of peoples favourite stations too

Wow! Without the text I would have thought them to be some museum or gallery.

I know exactly what you mean!

Wow, it is just stunning! How does anyone get to work with so much to look at. I’m surprised at the very bourgeois-looking Komsomolskaya station. I would have thought it was all too Tzarist looking, but then I haven’t been to Russia yet lol. This has just made me want to go more!

' src=

Wow, that’s a lot of artwork. I wonder how old some of these pieces are?

Generally most of the stations are from 1940-1960 approximately. The later stations are more functional than style.

' src=

My mother-in-law was in Moscow fifty years ago and still raves about the metro stations. So far, I could not imagine much. But now! The pictures are great and I think it’s almost a pity that this splendor is underground. But for every user of the Metro can enjoy a free trip to the world of art. Susanne

True. It is like having a free trip to an art museum/gallery. I hope that you can one day visit Moscow and see for yourself.

' src=

Oh wow, I would never have known that these were metro stations. The ceilings remind me of how you need to look up sometimes, even in the commuter rush!

It is true about life in general, we just go from A to B looking directly in front of us instead of around us

' src=

Wow, I would have never guessed that these were stations. The decor is so pretty and not one I’m used to seeing at metro stations. Love the ceiling at The Komsomolskaya metro station.

They certainly don’t look like metro stations. The ceiling there is one of my favourites too!

This Oregon beach is named second best in the country to visit this spring

You don’t have to travel far this spring to visit one of the best beaches in the entire country, at least according to a new ranking from the website Dive In Travel .

The ranking names Venice Beach in California the best beach to visit this spring, but in the second spot, the website picked an Oregon favorite, Cannon Beach .

Cannon Beach beat out beaches in Florida, Georgia and both Carolinas, based on its aggregate score from Dive In. The score took into account “TripAdvisor reviews, hotel prices and availability, parking availability, drink and dining costs and Google search volume.”

If you’ve ever been to Cannon Beach, you know that the reviews must be good, the hotels, drink and dining costs must be cheap and the Google search volume must be huge because there is very, very little parking ( a great reason to take the bus ).

According to Dive In, Cannon Beach is notable for its “stunning natural beauty,” and has “an impressive 4.73 TripAdvisor rating across 2,560 reviews.”

There could be a downside, though, the website noted. Because, even though the town is popular on Google, “research showed only 25 available hotels nearby, so finding accommodation may be a struggle.”

Of course, Dive In is not actually familiar with Cannon Beach and the fact that many visitors stay in rental homes.

If you’re looking for a reason to hit up Cannon Beach this spring instead of Venice Beach and proximity and bus access aren’t enough of a reason, according to Dive In, a meal is only $18, a full $2 cheaper than a meal on Venice Beach.

You will, however, want to invest those extra $2 back into a sweatshirt. There will be minimal rollerblading in a bikini at Cannon Beach this spring.

the fly from Sheremetyevo is take off at 21:10 pm 23 august and arrives at 10:00 am 24 august to Amsterdam.

The another fly from Vnukova is take off 4:00 am midnight 24 august and arrives at 10:00 am 24 august to amsterdam.

Both of them arrive Amsterdam in same time. When i choose Vnukova i will have more time to trip in moscow but i hear that Sheremetyevo is safer and better than Vnukova.

Which one is better and safer? which one should i choose?

Thanks in advance.

' class=

Hi, can't comment about safety, 'cause everything is safe here, but Vnukovo is my choice. It's loaded on 1/3 of its capacity only, halls look calm, security procedures are smooth too. Aeroflot's SVO is too crowded, they got very unsuccessful D terminal with long and tiny halls, you can't even find a place to seat most of the day. Try VKO.

> Both of them arrive Amsterdam in same time

> Aeroflot's SVO is too crowded, they got very unsuccessful D terminal with long and tiny halls, you can't even find a place to seat most of the day

I am flying to/from SVO at least twice a year, mostly from D, always easily find a place to seat, happen to find it very comfortable. Must be doing something wrong.

it has connection at riga. you can at the website of airbaltic

one life one travel

Actually both seem to be connections due to flying time. If a connection is all on Air Baltic - they use terminal E at SVO - the perfect choice... SVO is my choice, because it has Starbucks on Aeroexpress arrival, and VKO does not - but my question is - what do you mean by "safety" while comparing airports?

By saying safety, i hear that some necessary security measures arent taken by control tower when taking off and landing the planes.

Where have you heard this nonsense information? Both airports are safe, if you meant necessary safety procedures.

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card* -- Wells Fargo’s latest and best travel card -- recently launched with an impressive set of features. Its competitive rewards, welcome bonus and redemption options take aim at incumbent travel credit cards from Chase, American Express and Capital One.

What gives Wells Fargo’s first foray into the point-transfer space an edge is that you don’t have to book travel in a portal to earn the highest rewards rates.

Here’s why we think the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey could go toe-to-toe with some of the best travel credit cards, plus four insider tips to help you decide if you should add it to your credit card lineup.

Before we dive into the hidden features and benefits, here’s an overview of what you can expect with the Autograph Journey:

  • Earn 60,000 welcome bonus rewards points after spending $4,000 in purchases within three months of account opening.
  • Earn unlimited 5x points on hotels, 4x points on airlines, 3x points on other travel and dining and 1x on other purchases.
  • Receive an annual statement credit with a $50 minimum airline purchase.
  • No foreign transaction fees.
  • Other benefits include trip cancellation and interruption insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, roadside dispatch and cell phone insurance.
  • $95 annual fee.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

4 important details about the autograph journey .

Here’s a rundown of four facts we discovered about the Autograph Journey that you should know when deciding whether to apply.

1. You can transfer points with Wells Fargo point-based cards

The launch of the Autograph Journey also marks the first transferable points program from Wells Fargo, which joins other card issuers like Chase and Capital One, which have their own pooling programs .

Autograph Journey will be able to do a points transfer with the no-annual-fee Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card . This is especially notable since the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card offers bonus rewards in different categories than the Autograph Journey.

For example, the Autograph card earns unlimited 3x points on restaurants, travel, gas stations, transit, popular streaming services and phone plans, plus 1x points on other purchases. So you can maximize your point earning across different categories, then transfer your points to your Autograph Journey account to access premium travel redemptions.

2. It offers more options for earning bonus miles on travel than some competitors

The Autograph Journey will offer more flexibility than many travel rewards cards when it comes to earning more points on travel purchases. For example, cardholders earn unlimited 5x points on hotels booked directly with hotel brands and 4x points on airfare booked with airlines.

This helps the card stand out from other popular travel credit cards that offer the most bonus points only if you book travel through their portals. For example, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card * and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card * only offer the highest bonus rewards on travel booked through Capital One Travel. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card also offers its highest rate of 5x points on travel booked through Chase Travel℠, whereas other travel purchases earn 2x points.

Autograph Journey cardholders also earn a minimum of 3x points on other travel purchases, which could include rental cars, cruises and travel booked through online travel agencies like Expedia and Priceline.

3. The card may grow in value as more transfer partners join

The Autograph Journey Card will earn flexible travel rewards points that transfer to a selection of airline and hotel partners, similar to Amex Membership Rewards points or Chase Ultimate Rewards . While the list of transfer partners is limited, Wells Fargo stated in its initial press release that “more partners will continue to be added throughout the year.”

Points transfers could dramatically change the value proposition of the Autograph Journey, especially if new partners include domestic airlines and popular hotel loyalty programs.

Wells Fargo point transfers will be available to new cardholders starting on April 4. For now, Wells Fargo transfer partners include the following:

4. You may need to wait to apply

If you’ve applied for another Wells Fargo card in the last six months, you’ll likely have to wait a little longer before applying for the Autograph Journey.

Wells Fargo states in its terms and conditions, “If you opened a Wells Fargo Credit Card account within the last six months, then you may not qualify to open an additional Wells Fargo Credit Card account. We may also limit how many open Wells Fargo Credit Card accounts you have.”

So if you want the new Autograph Journey, you should steer clear of applying for other cards from Wells Fargo for now. If you’re approved and use the card responsibly for six months or longer, you can consider adding additional Wells Fargo credit cards to your portfolio.

Sunlight Air offers P88 one-way base fares to Boracay until April 15

By Camille Santiago Published Apr 13, 2024 1:32 pm

Boracay consistently earns a spot on our summer bucket list, thanks to its combination of stunning scenery, exciting aquatic activities, and a variety of dining options.

Its popularity continues to soar, with Malay Mayor Floribar Bautista aiming to attract 2.3 million tourists in 2024, exceeding the previous year's target of 1.8 million.

This surge is likely fueled by the increasing number of convenient travel options and awards. Last year, the island was among Condé Nast Traveler's (CNT) Top 10 Readers' Choice Awards 2023 winners. Boracay is also gunning for this year's Asia’s Leading Luxury Island Destination title at the 2024 World Travel Awards.

Additionally, Sunlight Air will be launching twice-weekly flights (Tuesdays and Saturdays) to Boracay from Clark and Cebu starting April 30, making the island even more accessible for both domestic and international travelers.

To celebrate this, they are offering a P88 one-way base fare from Clark or Cebu to Boracay. The fare already includes a 7kg carry-on baggage allowance. Government-imposed transportation taxes and fees are not yet included.

The ticket is valid for travel between April 30th and October 15, 2024. No promo codes are needed.

This illegal Hawaii hike has caused controversy for years, now it's being removed for good

one life one travel

Starting this month, one of Hawaii’s most dangerous and controversial hikes will be permanently removed.

Oahu’s Stairway to Heaven trail, comprising 3,922 slick steel steps that ascend the narrow ridges of the Koolau Mountain Range, has been illegal to hike since 1987. Although trespassing cost hikers a $1,000 citation, thousands still attempted the trek for an Edenic view of the island. Social media helped propel the trail, also known as Haiku Stairs, into popularity.

The process of dismantling the “aging, narrow metal stair structure” will begin with the removal of over 600 stair modules, according to a press release by the City and County of Honolulu. The entire project is expected to take six months.

During the Wednesday announcement, Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said the removal is “long overdue.”

“This decision that was made was predicated upon our respect for the people who live in and around the entrance to the stairs, our respect for our aina (land), and our respect for both the future and the past history of the culture of the Haiku community,” he added.

The City and County of Honolulu unanimously passed Resolution 21-154 in 2021 to remove the stairs as an effort to increase the quality of life for the nearby residents, improve public safety and preserve the natural beauty of the lush Haiku Valley.

Be a better tourist to Hawaii: Volunteer to help leave the islands better than when you arrived

Honolulu City Council Vice Chair Esther Kiaaina, who introduced the resolution, called the project “a new chapter for Haiku Valley” and the collective decision to eradicate the stairs is “for the good of the community” during the press conference , according to Hawaii New Now.

"After decades of the community asking the government for relief, we had an obligation to make a decision and a decision that I knew would displease some people but at the end I had to look at a lot of variable factors," Kiaaina, who has been involved in discussions around land management for Haiku Stairs for over two decades, told USA TODAY. She called it "a hard decision."

For decades, residents who live near the stairs have been complaining of disturbances by hikers, who often hopped fences and trespassed onto private property during the middle of the night to catch the sunrise. Some hikers blocked people’s driveways and vandalized or urinated on people’s property, the resolution said.

Between August 2017 and March 2020, police officers turned away 11,427 people attempting to hike the stairs by passing through the surrounding neighborhoods, according to the resolution.

With its steep cliffs and unpredictable weather conditions, the trail is highly dangerous. Any mistake can result in a helicopter rescue, although there have not been any fatalities on record. Between 2010 and 2022, more than 188 people were rescued from the hike – paid for by taxpayers. With helicopter rescues costing thousands of dollars, a bill was introduced last year to make people pay for their own rescues, but it has not passed .

Along with deconstructing the stairs, the project also includes the restoration of native plants in impacted areas. The project will also preserve some of the structure to honor the stair’s historical significance as a World War II military access route.

"The wonderment is still there, that's the natural beauty of the mauna (mountain) and Haiku Valley," Kiaaina said. "The stairs itself served a purpose for U.S. national security purposes and that purpose is done. Separate from what people think, I feel part of the healing is for the mauna (mountain) and for the valley itself."

The city stressed that the stairs will become even more perilous during construction and “present an immediate safety threat” to anyone who may try to sneak in a final hike.
