Trip Advisor review - Red River Adventures in Moab Utah

Online reviews - 5 Stars

Why Choose RRA? - 20 years of doing it right! Since 2003, when rafting operations began, we have gone on to expand our operations into rock and ice climbing, canyoneering, guided ski touring, travel trips and outdoor education. We have hosted over 85,000 guests and spent over 110,000 days in the field! We are so proud that this has garnered 5-star rankings across all online review sites. Land or water our clients rave about the quality of our guides, the depth of their knowledge, their ability to teach and most importantly, how incredibly fun each is. We believe our past guest's comments make the decision easy! Back to top

Your Safety is our number #1 concern

Since we started this journey in 2003 we have safely hosted 85,000+ kids and adults and spent over 100,000 days rafting, climbing, canyoneering and skiing in Utah and around the world. RRA guides are at a minimum state licensed, insured and hold first aid and CPR certifications. Many of our river guides hold additional certifications in swift water rescue and whitewater instruction. Many, though not all, of our rock, ice, ski and canyoneering guides are AMGA trained or certified for the terrain they guide.. Back to top

Quality Equipment

Do i need a reservation.

YES! To guarantee space on the trip of your choice, we recommend reservations, especially on holidays and summer weekends. In order to provide the type of trip the we have become known for we do limit the number of people on a launch and we do fill up. In addition a lot goes into the planning of a river trip, including scheduling of guides, drivers, packing lunch for full-day and lunch trips and ensuring that our equipment is always in top-notch condition. Make a reservation as soon as you have a good idea of when you want to raft with us and you'll avoid disappointment. Feel free to call us about reservations at any time @ 1-877-259-4046 or email. About Age Limitations

Which trip to choose.

We are thrilled to have the ability to offer such a wide variety or trips. We also realize that this can create confusion. We are a fantastic resource and look forward to helping you choose the trip that is perfect for you and your group. Please feel free to call or email with any questions you might have, we love to help. Often after a brief conversation with one of our staff the the answers become clear. Back to top

Where do we park/leave our things

There is plenty of secure parking on site at our offices. Valuables can be locked in your vehicles and will be perfectly safe for the duration of your trip. In addition we are more than happy to store anything that you may be extra concerned about in our offices while you are on the river. Back to top

Are there bugs

Thankfully there are usually very few to no bugs on our trips. The we travel through some of the driest terrain on the planet so there is generally no standing water for bugs to breed in. At the same time the current in the main river section is too swift to allow for breeding. This being said sometimes there are gnats or mosquitoes. Back to top

Be prepared for hot (75-110 F degrees) weather during June, July, and August. You can expect cooler temperatures (55-90 F degrees) during April, May, September, and October. August is usually the wettest month (short-lived but intense thunder showers). April 73|42 May 84|50 June 85|58 July 101|64 Aug 98|63 Sept 89|53 Back to top

About Swimming and Fishing

Swimming is as much a part of a great river trip as whitewater and cooking out. Guests are more than welcome to swim on all our river trips. There is no better place to be on a hot summer day than swimming alongside one of our rafts. Catfish and Carp are plentiful in the Colorado and Dolores Rivers. Back to top

River rafting reviews and red river adventure testimonials.

Mark Popelka

John, an IFMGA Certified Mountain Guide led a backcountry tour for me today. It was a full on mountain adventure with extreme weather. My kind of day in the mountains. John is the epitome of what a guide should be. He is extremely personable, patient, fit, and a master of his profession. A Guide full of experience and knowledge. I learned an incredible amount of information today on mountain travel and avalanche related topics. He took the time to explain and ensure I understood the topics. He also shared tips and techniques that made my experience a 10 out of 10. I plan to hire John in the future. You can’t go wrong asking for John. He’s amazing!

mark gregg

Carl is a consummate professional backcountry ski guide. I always learn a ton and have fun in the process. I'll be back!

Anna Rust

Honestly one of the best classes I’ve take, Jake and Vic are both through educators and great guides. If you’re looking to take a AIARE course these guys are great! I left feeling more prepared to deal with avalanche problems and identifying risks in the backcountry.

Steve Sherwood

I had a great time with John at Red River Adventures doing a ski tour yesterday. We skied around Cardiff Fork in the Wasatch, he’s a tremendous guide, such attention to detail, I’ve gone on nearly a dozen trips with him. He and Carl at Red River make a dynamic team. They do rock climbing, skiing, alpine climbing, river guiding, you name it they do it. Keep it up folks!

Susan Sims

Victoria was fun and was able to adapt for what suited our time for the day. Appreciated the rescue sled tips.

George Diver

Jake and Ben were professional, informative and extremely helpful. Would recommend to anyone who feels apprehensive about taking an avalanche safety course.

Mike Martula

Amazing experience with Sam on my first back country experience

Liam Doyle

Jake and Garth were both excellent instructors, and just a blast to hang out with for a weekend. It is super obvious they both care a ton about providing an impactful educational experience - but they also made the entire weekend very fun. Highly recommend.

Lukasz Sewera

Great experience during our rescue course.

Derek Wang

It was a blast. Brain was really skilled and thoughtful.

Candice Bithell

Spent a day ice climbing with Red River. Excellent instruction, fun guide (ask for Brian!), all in all a great time. Will go again for sure! Thanks Red River!

Lawler Kang

Out of random coincidence, Sam had led me up a trail last year and strongly suggested I take this course, which was AWESOME! The experience and passion she and Jake bring to getting humans back safely and stoked is unparalleled. And the resources they walk you through and make available are profound. Can’t recommend Red River and these two strongly enough. If you’re serious about backcountry, this is an absolute must. I also really liked the small class size. Made a big difference. Looking forward to practicing my beacon finding at the resort.

Jonas Clem

Great day with Jake at Provo Canyon. Very skilled guides that go above and beyond. Highly recommend….

Ryan Kelly

Alex was an awesome instructor. We had a great day going over all of the different avalanche rescue techniques.

Anthony Torma

Amazing guides who are knowledgeable and charismatic. Took an AIARE 1 class through them and it was an amazing time. I learned so much!

Mark Sims

Amazing experience with John and Garth in our Avi 1 class. They were great teachers and I feel confident in the skills I acquired through their instruction.

David Johnson

Sam was a fantastic guide and instructor. Very skilled at building our skills in the backcountry!

Daniel Mills-Thysen

John, Jeremy, and Garth are all awesome and taught a great course in a beautiful area. If you are taking AIRIE 1 and don't have skis/board or beacon/probe/shovel they will help you out and loan you what you need for the course!

Rochelle Erskine

Sam delivered an awesome rescue course!

christy mallak

I went on August 31st, Leaky was our guide. He was awesome and was very pleased with our white water rafting. Thanks so much

Richard Cox

We did the full day with lunch and was extremely pleased! Our guide was outstanding, the trip was great and the food was delicious. Highly recommended.

Kyle Drenckhahn

No need to waste time reading this review when you could already be on their website signing up, but I suppose it's your time to waste, so here's the deal. A couple weeks ago, my friend suggested we go rafting in Moab together. She had previously done a trip with Red River Adventures a while back and loved it, so it seemed like a safe bet for my inaugural float. Simple sign up, fair prices, and knowledgeable guides. Pretty much a no-brainer. It totally held up. We had a blast with our guide, the absolutely incredible Molly. Her witty humor and kindness were only matched by her knowledge of the area and of the river itself. Between the named rapids, of which she had complete and utter control over, she kept the group entertained with fun little facts about the local geography, wildlife, and surrounding community. It was an even better experience than I had hoped for. One and only one complaint: On our way back to our vehicles after the trip, Molly gave our group some recommendations for restaurants in the area, including burgers at Milt's. It sounded like the perfect place for my friend and I to grab a quick bite on our way out of town since we were running short on time, so we stopped by. They were "temporarily closed." Molly, burgers are on you next time I see ya. ;)

Roland Ducomble

We had a great day of rafting. Very well organized. Thanks to our guide Kira, she very professional and entertaining. Lunch was very good thanks to Leaky. Overall a perfect day.

Sam Mckellar

Best rafting trip we've been on, and certainly not our first. Highly recommend

Liu Qian

Definitely a Great day on the River. Leaky kept us entertained the whole journey and there can be some swimming. We did the full day which lasts much longer on the River and had a free lunch.

Elizabeth S

Had an awesome time rock climbing in Moab with Red River Adventures. Our guide, Ryan, was super cool and also professional and had safety as his #1 importance the whole time. Great temperatures and we were in the shade the whole time (did this approx 7:30am-12pm). Would definitely come again!

Michael Myers

I had a blast!

Gummi Bear

We enjoyed the rafting very much. We had a great time, and I especially enjoyed the swimming on the side of the boat portion. I loved the trip and highly recommend it.

James Wojcik

Very relaxing and fun float. Class 1 and 2 rapids were obviously pretty easy but Molly, our guide, was great and the view was spectacular.

Jacob Nizri

Great experience!!!

Austin Adams

We had the best morning on the water with Red River! We did the half day rafting trip on the Colorado through the canyon. The scenery was amazing, our guide Ryan (and all the guides) was great, we had lots of time for swimming, and it was a great intro into whitewater for my younger son. Top notch organization!

Dustin Farris

It was a lot of fun. I was not to sure what to expect but it was the best part of our trip. I would do the full day (I think its called 1/2 day). The information said it would be a bbq lunch but it was better than that. The lunch they provided was my favorite meal of our entire trip. Ryan was our guide and he did great and made it interesting and fun. 19/10 stars

MK

We loved our experience at Red River Adventures! The guides were great - funny and provided lots of interesting facts along the way! Our kids age 12,10, 7 loved their first time white water rafting! Breathtaking views.

Megan Kremser

My two kids (9 and 11 years old) did the full day white water rafting and morning Bow and Arrow canyoneering adventures. We had an awesome time and they are already to visit Moab again!

Mckenna Evans

Very fun! The ride is a tad shorter than anticipated. I would go for the full day trip. Lots of chances to swim and generally goof around.

Kristin Mathew

Dan was an amazing guide! Very down to earth and made us feel safe and comfortable at every step of the way.

Erika Anderson

Had a great time!

Alison Scott

Red River adventures did a great job with our large group of adults and teenagers! We’d definitely go with them again! And if you can, make sure you get Brendan as your guide, he’s the best!

Ava Cox

My husband and I had a great time! Our guide, Kinsley, was amazing! She explained everything and make us feel safe and comfortable. The hike wasn't too strenuous and the views were spectacular! I'll definitely want to do this again next time we're in Moab.

Emily Hatch

Awesome trip. The guides were so friendly and fun and also focused on safety. The lunch was incredible (chickpea curry!) and in addition to the gorgeous canyon red rock scenery we saw river otters and mountain goats. The length of the full trip was perfect and we wish we could do it again tomorrow.

Brooke Casselberry

It was a great day on the river!

Suzette Henschell

Shout out to Ryan who did a fantastic job leading our morning white water adventure. We had a great time. Highly recommend. Thanks again Ryan!

Amy Miller

My husband and I decided to do the full day white water rafting trip at the end of June. The experience was fun and enjoyable. The entire team was kind, friendly and really seemed to care about everyone having a good experience. Things were very well organized but the highlight for us was our guide Olivia. She was awesome. She was very nice, funny and extremely knowledgeable of the area and the environment. Great experience and I would recommend this company and if you are lucky to have her, Olivia, as your guide.

Competent guides, incredible scenery- just an awesome experience all around. The full guided trip seems like a bargain in retrospect. Our guide was Jonas and he did a hell of a job navigating us through some gnarly class 2-3 rapids during highwater (15-20k cfs).

Cyndi Diaz

This was so amazing!! We loved the experience. Perfect for a family and you just can’t beat the scenery 🙌🏻

bert ballet

We had a great trip! Mackenzie was a great guide, she was very pleasant and we felt very safe with her!

Riley Heaton

Canyoneering was great! Ryan was the best. 2nd most handsome guide... I think... I didn't meet the other guides. But fr, he's pretty great

lauren cooper

We had an amazing time on our first climb of the trip. We climbed at the Ice Cream Parlor with Kenzie, who was super cool and amazing. She was able to answer all of our questions about the area and provided a very positive experience for us

Chase Koory

Ryan w/ Red River was a phenomenal guide on the Fishers Tower rafting trip! He led us thru the best rapids and shared some great stories. Red River provided a great lunch! Overall great experience

Alex Winn

We had Adam as our guide for the rock of ages canyoneering trip. We had an excellent time! He really knew his stuff and we all had so much fun! Definitely recommend for anyone who wants to get into canyoneering but hasn’t tried it yet.

Jared is the man you want to learn canyoneering from. Without a doubt, you will not find a better instructor than him. His guides are also incredible at what they do and extremely knowledgeable. The progression of the course is absolutely perfect, going from learning the basics, to practicing what you’ve learned, to real life scenarios in the canyon.

Rob Shallenberger

AWESOME company! If you need a guide or want to take a course to improve your canyoneering skills, this is your company!

Jared and his team taught us so many new skills, and were amazing every step of the way. I highly recommend them in every way!!

Jared and his team were exceptional in explaining techniques and methods in ways that were both memorable and understandable. I was super impressed by how patient, positive, and watchful the instructors were — always finding my slip-ups and correcting them in a positive way. I progressed so far in three days — from the uninitiated to an experienced (albeit still “green”) canyoneer. And I had a great time!

A really awesome canyoneering course! North Wash Outfitters came recommended to me by some friends and I’m so glad I did it. I feel so much more comfortable with the skills and techniques I learned, the instructors are super knowledgeable and experienced. Great class, great experience, great people. I look forward to taking an advanced class when I’m ready

I have taken both the beginner and advanced class from Jared and his crew. Their knowledge and teaching methods are superior. They not only teach the techniques in a way that anyone can learn, but they are also patient and make sure you understand. Going through the trainings and the canyons with them you can tell that safety is definitely a value.

Christopher Hagedorn

What an amazing and unique experience. Beautiful and interesting landscape. Scrambling on rocks and hiking was exciting but the real gem is the rappel. We always felt safe and very informed. Great guide and fun experience for all. Highly recommend this activity.

Great day out with Tyler at Robbers roost. It is just challenging enough to keep it very interesting but not overly challenging for me with my dad bod and my 15 y/o son. Tyler was great, giving us instructions, and keeping us safe and comfortable. The views were fantastic and we got some great photos. It was an experience we will both remember for a long time.

Christopher and Tyler were great guides. They took the time to answer lots of questions. They taught us new techniques and made everyone in the group very comfortable with what we were about to approach. I loved that they also offered up a little history of the area too. Already talking about coming back next year. 100% a good time!

An incredible experience start to finish! Adrenaline-inducing, awe-inspiring once in a lifetime adventure. Our guide Will was the very best – experienced, extremely safety conscious, and after two days felt like our best friend. DO IT! BOOK IT!!

Rappelling in utah. here’s everything you need to know..

Also known as the Beehive State or the Mormon State, Utah is home to some of the country’s most popular canyoning and rappelling tours. Rappelling in Utah is arguably more popular than anywhere else in the world, and that’s because this incredible state includes some of the most beautiful canyons and waterfalls. It’s no wonder that people from all over the country visit Utah for its rappelling opportunities.

I can personally vouch for the quality of these tours and the unique experiences that they offer. While I usually take a few friends or family members with me on these trips, there’s nothing wrong with going alone if that’s your preference. Each location has its own guides and experts, so you don’t even have to be experienced to take part. Before you decide on a destination, however, it’s worth keeping a few key things in mind:

  • Is the rappelling location easily accessible or do you need to hike or climb in order to reach it?
  • Are the facilities child-friendly, or should you leave the younger ones at home?
  • Pricing and nearby accommodation options.
  • Weather conditions, which will dictate your wardrobe and gear selection.
  • Difficulty levels, just in case you want more of a challenge.
  • How long does it take to complete the tour?
  • Are service animals allowed?
  • Is the tour recommended for pregnant visitors? (just in case you’re expecting)
  • What is the maximum tour capacity? (if you plan to bring friends or family members along)

I’m going to include as much information as I can for each of the following canyoning and rappelling tours in Utah. Hopefully, by the end of this guide, you’ll be able to make an informed decision about your next destination. I should note that I’m not affiliated with any of these tours in any way. I’m just trying to put some well-structured information out there in order to help out my readers. Let’s start thing off with a beginner-friendly rappelling tour, shall we?

1. Moab Canyon Tours in Southeastern Utah.

Moab Canyon Tours is a relatively small company but the good news is that it’s a private company. Therefore, its guides are able to fit into pretty much any itinerary, and they can ensure a custom, tailor-made experience for you and your party. The tours focus on the southeastern part of Utah, and they include as many as 4 rappels on a single go.

The Half-Day Canyoneering Tour is beginner-friendly, and you can even bring your kids along. Just make sure to talk to Moab beforehand and agree on a specific trip and activity. It’s worth noting that all children must be accompanied by an adult, but that seems pretty reasonable, right?

That’s the best part about Moab, you get exactly what you pay for. You decide what activities you want to take part in and how long you want your trip to be. The most popular trip over there is the Irish Canyons. They are quite a sight to behold, and even more amazing to explore. The canyons targeted by this tour are not wheelchair accessible, which is unfortunate but it is what it is. Moreover, the tour requires a certain minimum number of attendees, and if that number isn’t met you’ll simply be reassigned to another tour or receive a full refund.

Other highlights of Moab Canyon Tours include hotel pickup and drop-off, as well as professional guides. You’ll also receive all of the necessary gear on-site, including helmets, belay devices, harnesses, ropes, and gloves.

2. Red Desert Adventure in Springdale, Utah.

You’ll find many towns that are called Springdale all over the United States, but the one I’m referring to is located in Utah, right outside the boundaries of Zion National Park. That’s where you’ll be able to take part in the Red Desert Adventure – rated as the no.1 outdoor activity in Springdale. You will be able to rappel as part of this tour, naturally, but there are many other things you can enjoy as well. I’m talking about rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking or various family adventures.

You can definitely take your kids along on this one. Actually, the more the merrier. You won’t have to worry about anything going wrong as long as you follow your guide’s instructions. Since we’re on the topic, I should note that absolutely everyone was satisfied with the guides over there. They are incredibly professional, calm, and helpful. They also adapt to change if you want to change something up last minute. I’m not saying that you should, but it’s worth knowing just in case.

Canyoneering seems to be the most popular activity at Red Desert Adventures. Indeed, Springdale is near some breathtaking canyons that are very fun and sometimes challenging to explore. You can also do a Day Trip at the Zion National Park or maybe visit the nearby Bryce Canyon.

3. Paragon Adventures in St. George.

Paragon Adventures has a plethora of outstanding activities available in and around St. George, Utah. The Mojave Zip Line tour is definitely something to keep an eye out for, especially if you are fond of ziplining. The guides will make sure that you’re able to zipline across the canyon and back again, all while admiring the wonderful sights all around you.

If you want to tackle the Red Rock Canyon there are a few rappelling opportunities during the tour. All you have to do is take advantage of them. This is a day-long adventure that you can customize according to your own needs and fitness levels. What’s awesome about these tours is that the guides will always put safety first, and you’ll never feel like you’re doing something you’re not prepared to do or you’re not supposed to do.

Other amazing experiences around St.George include an introduction to Hydro Flight, a 3-Day Las Vegas to Grand Canyon tour, and a day trip to Mount Trumbull.

4. Wild Expeditions in Bluff.

I just love day tours, you know? The guides really have time to explain everything properly, and I have time to admire everything up close without feeling rushed. Wild Expeditions offers some of the best day tours in Bluff, particularly if we’re talking about Jeep Tours to some of the most important landmarks in the area.

The Jeep Tour of Comb Ridge comes to mind, as well as the Jeep Tour of Bears Ears. Both of these offer exceptional opportunities for sightseeing and learning about the unique history of the place. For rappelling, I’d recommend Blarney Canyon in North Wash. This place offers three rappelling opportunities as well as some relatively difficult downclimbing. The first rappel is no less than 50 feet high!

If you enjoy exploring Native American ruins, you will be able to feast your eyes in full during the trips. Also, you might want to test your rafting skills while you’re out there. The opportunities are endless.

5. Get in the Wild in Hanksville, Utah.

Known throughout Utah for its amazing canyoning and rappelling tours, Get in the Wild is a no-brainer for anyone looking to enjoy Hanksville at its finest. East Leprechaun canyoneering is where I’d recommend you start. This way, you’ll get to warm up for rappelling by squeezing between various close canyon walls and hiking all the way up to the rappelling locations. There are three rappels in total at East Leprechaun, which should be enough for a beginner at least.

Alternatively, you could go for Robber’s Roost Canyoneering Adventure, which will allow you to rappel through a series of beautiful canyons. The canyoneering instructors on-site are true pros, and everyone knows exactly what they need to do at all times.

Goblin’s Lair Canyoneering Adventure is well-suited for hikers of all ages. Even seniors will be able to enjoy rappelling with no issues at all, which speaks volumes about the local instructors, their patience, and their level of professionalism.

6. East Zion Experiences in Orderville.

Southern Utah is definitely one of the most picturesque parts of the state. East Zion Experiences aims to provide guided tours to some of the region’s most popular slot canyons, but what’s really interesting is that UTV rides are available over there. Furthermore, you’ll also be able to engage in technical rappelling and canyoneering.

What’s awesome about these tours is that you and your party will be the only ones visiting a specific spot at any given time. This means that you’ll have very few distractions, and you’ll get to enjoy the experience even more. Since East Zion offers mostly UTV rides, these are well-suited for people of all ages and experience levels. Furthermore, you can go on one of these trips even if you’re pregnant, just don’t overdo it.

The canyoneering and rappelling tours usually last for around four hours, and they’re well-suited even for beginners who have never rappelled before. They represent a great opportunity to learn the basics and gain some confidence before going on more difficult trips.

7. Big Rock Adventure in Marysvale.

What makes Big Rock Adventure special is that its tours include actual animals. You can also go on standard ziplining, hiking, and rappelling tours, not to mention the incredibly fun whitewater rafting. You don’t have to spend too much time in Marysvale in order to enjoy all that it has to offer, but I’d give it a few days at the very least.

People usually go in groups of 8 or more, but keep in mind that the larger your group, the more likely it is that you’ll have to wait a while before you can enjoy your activities. White water rafting is definitely the most popular activity around Marysvale. The guides are very attentive and will always suggest the safest routes while also ensuring that everyone gets to have fun.

If you want something a bit more laid-back, there’s always the lazy river float adventure. It’s not as engaging as rafting but it does give you an opportunity to kick back and relax.

8. The Backcountry Pros in Salt Lake City.

I just had to include something from Salt Lake City into the list. After all, it is one of the capital of Utah and one of its most popular tourist destinations. It has plenty to offer too through touring companies such as The Backcountry Pros.

I’d advise you to visit this place in winter, as there are plenty of activities available relating to snow, including avalanche refresher courses and skiing. You can also engage in rock climbing as long as you pick a good guide that knows all the best routes. For instance, you can go multi-pitch climbing at one of the many mountains near Salt Lake City.

Not much to do in terms of rappelling over there, or maybe it isn’t as popular as in other parts of Utah. However, there are a few canyons nearby such as Big Cottonwood Canyon, which affords some great exploration and canyoneering opportunities.

9. Southern Utah Guiding in Hurricane.

With Southern Utah Guiding, you’ll be able to learn the basics and practice rock climbing under the guidance of a professional. The best part about these tours is that the guides tailor the experience around each group’s overall ability and fitness level. This way, you’ll never feel overworked but you’ll always be challenged. These are my favorite kinds of tours: the ones where I don’t have time to get bored.

Rappelling is definitely something that you should try while you’re out there. Even if you’re not completely sure or you feel like you’re about to give up, just find the courage to give it a go and you won’t regret it.

The most common issue associated with rappelling and canyoneering is a fear of heights, but the local guides know how to make you forget all about it. Alternatively, you can check out my own guide about overcoming your fear of heights and fear of falling. It might help you out, so go give it a read.

10. Epic One Adventures in Draper.

As you can see by now, there are plenty of rappelling tours in Utah, and each promises to deliver a unique and memorable experience. As we reach the end of our list, I wanted to tell you about Epic One Adventures in Draper – a city located about 20 miles away from Salt Lake City.

Epic One hosts a generous array of tours and guides that will take you through the state’s most incredible National Parks. You could try to explore them yourself with just a map for guidance, but you’d be wasting precious time. This guiding service specializes in canyoneering, hiking, photography and the exploration of various national parks. Apart from Utah, they also have offices in Canada and Italy.

Back to Draper, Utah, you should get in touch with Epic One and ask about their tours for Zion National Park and Angel’s Landing. Canyoneering is the most popular activity over there, so be prepared to push your limits as you explore these incredible natural wonders.

Conclusion.

There are plenty of things to do in Utah, but canyoneering and rappelling seem to be the no.1 priority for those who choose to visit this incredible state. I hope that my list above has given you a general idea of what to expect from the various rappelling tours in Utah.

I go there at least once a year, and while I wasn’t able to go an all of these tours, I do hope that I’ll manage to fulfill this dream within the next few years. If you have anything that you would like to share about your time in Utah, feel free to drop a comment below.

When is the Best Time for Canyoneering Zion, Kanab, and Orderville?

At ROAM Outdoor Adventure Co., our commitment to providing exceptional outdoor experiences extends throughout the year, and we believe that canyoneering in Zion, Kanab, or Orderville is an adventure that can be enjoyed in every season. This philosophy is reflected in our year-round tour offerings, allowing you to explore the canyons of Southern Utah regardless of the month. However, it's essential to recognize that while canyoneering is a thrilling activity that transcends seasons, the weather will always remain the deciding factor to the overall experience enjoyment and accessibility to certain slot canyons.

For that reason, we recommend the best time of year for canyoneering in Zion, Kanab or Orderville to be spring, summer, and fall. The warmer, dryer months offer mild temperatures and fewer chances for flash flooding, making your adventure more comfortable.

For time of day, daylight hours, especially the early mornings and late afternoons, are best for enjoying Zion canyoneering. These times offer cooler temperatures in the summer, softer lighting for photography, and a more pleasant experience overall. Additionally, the slot canyons tend to be less crowded during these times so that you can savor the natural solitude and serenity.

To ensure your safety, we recommend always checking the weather forecast before setting out to the canyons and making sure you have plenty of daylight hours for exploration.

Canyoneering Safety Tips

Safety in canyoneering is simple as long as you show up prepared and plan accordingly so you have everything you need. Here’s our safety checklist.

Have proper canyoneering gear : Ensure you have the necessary canyoneering equipment, including harnesses, helmets, ropes, descenders, carabiners, and any specialized gear required for the specific canyon you plan to explore. (More on this below.)

Wear proper clothing and shoes: Dress appropriately for the conditions, including moisture-wicking layers and sturdy shoes with good traction. Dressing in layers allows you to adapt to changing temperatures.

Stay weather aware : Always check the weather forecast before you head out. Avoid canyoneering during storms, as flash floods can be life-threatening in the narrow slot canyons.

Never go alone : Canyoneering is safest when done in a group. Make sure you have at least one partner with you who is experienced in canyoneering and familiar with the route.

Stay on the marked trails : Stick to established routes and marked trails to minimize the environmental impact and reduce the risk of getting lost in the canyons.

Plan ahead and know where you’re going : Study maps, route descriptions, and topographical information before your trip. Familiarize yourself with the canyon’s features and potential obstacles.

Bring sufficient water and food : Carry an ample water supply to stay hydrated. Pack energy-rich snacks and meals to sustain your energy throughout the day.

Bring a first aid kit : Carry a well-equipped first aid kit that includes items like bandages, antiseptic wipes, blister treatment, pain relievers, and any personal medications you may need.

While it may seem like a comprehensive list of requirements, rest assured that when you book a rappelling or canyoneering tour with ROAM Outdoor Adventure Co. in Zion, Kanab, or Orderville, you won't have to go through the hassle of gathering an extensive array of canyoneering gear. Permits for Canyoneering Zion, Kanab, and Orderville

Canyoneering permits are required for all Zion National park canyons requiring descending gear or ropes. Permits protect resources, manage visitor encounter rates, and educate users on safety concerns and resource protections.

A lottery system is in place for Zion permits–it is not guaranteed you will be able to obtain one of the dates of your choice. Study the Zion National Park website to learn when to apply for your necessary permits. Further, you must pick up your permit in person at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center, and it cannot be transferred to another person. The permits range in price from $15-$25.

Canyoneering In Utah

  • Visit our facebook
  • Visit our pinterest

The best way to experience the diverse landscapes of Utah is by hiking through them. Utah has some very remote areas that are accessible only to serious canyoneers that often require a guide.

Utah is home to some of the world's best canyoneering routes. For the uninitiated, canyoneering is the sport of hiking/rappelling/swimming through narrow canyons filled with obstacles l ike high water, fallen trees or rockfall debris. Sudden thunderstorms lead to flash flooding, so check in with the local ranger before heading in and keep track of hour-by-hour weather. Some of the most popular canyoneering routes include:

Promotional Links

Zebra Canyon  |  Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument

A stunning and unique out-and-back canyon located in  Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument . Hike through the narrow slot to find the beautiful pink and white striped pattern along the sides of the canyon walls. Be prepared for standing water, which varies from inches to feet deep and can feel pretty bitter during the colder months. Larger packs (and people) might be difficult to wiggle through the tight slot.

Little Wild Horse Canyon  |  San Rafael Swell

Located near  Goblin Valley , Little Wild Horse is a popular hiking spot for families and youth groups. The main attraction is a long stretch of "narrows," where the canyon walls are so close you have to turn sideways to get through. The rock walls are sculpted and very beautiful.

Spooky/Peek-a-Boo Gulch  |  Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument

Spooky Gulch is a short slot canyon hike in the  Grand Staircase-Escalante  area, located on the Hole-in-the-Rock Road — 26 miles south of the town of Escalante. Note that getting there can be tricky even with 4WD. Spooky is named for how dark it gets when deep in a slot, and for the panic-inspiring quality of its extremely narrow walls. Spooky can be combined with Peek-a-Boo Gulch to make a fun loop hike. Keep an eye out for Great Basin rattlesnakes.

Semi-technical

Black Hole of White Canyon  | near  Lake Powell

The Black Hole is a dark slot in White Canyon, located in the Hite area above  Lake Powell . The canyon makes a great semi-technical adventure hike. Access is easy and permits are not needed. It has become popular with families and youth groups. However, it is a challenging route carrying an element of danger, particularly flash flooding. While bringing a wetsuit on a hike in the desert seems counterintuitive, your extremities will thank you when you hit the year-round frigid water. Bring rope to save the rest of you from some tight spots as well.

The Narrows is the most popular hike in  Zion National Park , and one of the world's best slot canyon hikes. It is pure fun and can be tailored to suit any ability level. The trail is basically the Virgin River. The canyon is so narrow, the river covers the bottom in many spots, which means you have to wade or swim to proceed. Waders and neoprene socks will help you focus on the scenery, instead of your toes, in the colder months. If a twisted ankle would interfere with your evening plans, wear sturdy shoes and carry a big stick (or trekking poles) for handling the slick rocks and uneven ground.

The Subway  |  Zion National Park

One of the most beautiful slots in  Zion . It is a challenging 9.5 mile hike requiring short rappels or down climbs. The route also requires swimming through several deep pools of very cold debris-filled water, and a slippery walk through the actual subway portion. The normal route begins at the  Wildcat Canyon Trailhead  and ends at the Left Fork Trailhead. Plan on making it a day, cause this one ain’t an easy ride.

Golden Cathedral (Neon Canyon)  |  Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument

The Golden Cathedral is a unique hiking destination within lower Neon Canyon in the  Grand Staircase-Escalante area . This can be a long, hot one, so fill the saddle bags with plenty of vittles and liquid refreshment. (Surface of the sun hot? Only in the summer.) The Cathedral is located just over 3/4 of a mile up Neon Canyon from its confluence at the Escalante River, and consists of a great, domed pour-off from upper Neon Canyon, where the water has dug three separate pothole arches into the overhang.

Pine Creek  |  Zion National Park

A technical slot canyon packed with rappels and wading/swimming through cold pools. This is definitely more canyoneering than hiking, as you’ll be making multiple drops. The longest rappel is nearly 100 ft. and requires a 60 meter rope. This slot takes about 4 hours to complete. Bring a dry suit to avoid hypothermia, even in the summer.

Mystery Canyon  |  Zion National Park

A lesser-known but favorite of many technical canyoneers. Meaning don’t cut your teeth on this one, newbies. Only 12 hikers are allowed into the canyon per day. Technical climbing gear including two 140' ropes, harness descending equipment, emergency ascending equipment, emergency overnight gear and plenty of water are all necessary to do this hike.

Orderville Canyon  |  Zion National Park

Another popular and beautiful canyon. It is a winding slot that is a tributary to the famous Zion  Narrows . It also requires short rappels and extensive swimming. Remember to get your wilderness permit and shuttle pass. If you’re planning to hike out through the narrows, save some energy for possible strong currents and a rocky river bed.

Bluejohn Canyon  |  San Rafael Swell

In 2003, Aron Ralston, descending the canyon, was caught beneath a boulder for days, and escaped by amputating his own arm with a pocket knife. Thanks to all the media hype surrounding Ralston's story, this is one of the most popular technical slot canyons in the state. Travelers attempting the full breadth of the canyon need technical and canyoneering skills. However, there are a few sections that non-technical hikers might be able to access.

Advanced Technical

Jacob Canyon  |  Zion National Park

A long and lovely route with some big rappels — you’ll want to start early. As this is also a difficult route, you’ll want to be an experienced canyoneer with anchor-finding skills, good downclimbing skills (especially on loose rock) and long-rappel skills.

Observation Point Canyon  |  Zion National Park

This lesser-known slot canyon for advanced canyoneers can be accessed from the Weeping Rock trailhead. It features several long rappels, the longest being 300 feet. This canyon requires a permit. A rockfall will close the entire trail, so check with the park’s official site before planning your day.

Sandthrax  | near Hite (an hour east of  Canyonlands )

In a class of its own. This route is for the advanced-advanced canyoneers with uber-technical canyoneering skills to navigate it. If you aren’t familiar with difficult off-width and stem large silos, or high stemming in general, this is not the slot canyon for you. Bottom line: If you’re not sure you can nail it, don’t do it.

Featured image for “Canyoneering – The Ultimate Slot Canyon Experience”

It’s the ultimate slot canyon experience where you get to take in beautiful scenery while rappelling, down climbing, hiking, scrambling, and using rope skills to safely descend. It’s one of the most unique adventures southern Utah has to offer.

Adventurers from all over the world travel to the Zion National Park area just to experience our beautiful slot canyons. From professional canyoneers to average joes, we mean it when we say there’s something for everyone. Our guided canyoneering adventures run the gamut from a simple walk-in slot canyon tour that just about anyone can do to a full-day canyoneering adventure with epic rappelling views.

For anyone ready to tackle a more adventurous experience but new to the sport, a half-day canyoneering adventure provides an opportunity to explore stunning slot canyons through a mixture of hiking, climbing, and rappelling. Tack on a Jeep tour for an even grander adventure complete with exciting trails, beautiful views and more.

Just when we thought rappelling couldn’t be any cooler, our full-day canyoneering trip features 11 rappels up to 110 feet. You don’t want to miss out on this adventure. Don’t despair if you’re new to canyoneering. Zion Ponderosa’s 40-foot climbing wall and rappelling class are great for learning the ropes before hitting the trails.

Canyoneering adventures that will rock your world

The best part about guiding is seeing people reach for new heights and push themselves farther than they thought they could go, both mentally and physically. Many of our adventures require you to dig deep, but the pay off is well worth it when you reach the top of that climb or rappel off that cliff (that made you cringe just minutes before). These are the moments you’ll never forget, and our guides are committed to making sure you’re safe and stoked every step of the way .

At East Zion Adventures, our guides are ready to take you on an unforgettable canyon experience. Click here to book an adventure.

Welcome to Tom's Utah Canyoneering Guide

EOS 40D2010_09_062882.JPG

We go down canyons. And find out what is there. And have fabulous adventures.

We use ropes, often. Our hands and feet, quite a bit. Our shoulders, elbows, hips, thighs, calves, backsides - also quite a bit. Our cleverness, our wit, our fortitude, our sense of humor, our pluck, our desperation, our relationships with one another, our love of adventure - all these at times, we use, on these adventures of the spirit.

Wandering around in the desert is a fun game. The rewards when winning are ample, the cost of losing is steep. Like all games, it has rules, both those imposed by the environment and those imposed by us all so we can just get along.

Tom's Utah Canyoneering Guide exists to help you stay out of trouble and enjoy canyoneering in Utah and beyond.

Warning. Some of the activities on this site are dangerous.

Some of the activities described in Tom's Utah Canyoneering Guide are dangerous.

The information provided in this guide is accurate to the best of my knowledge, and based on my personal experience. It is no substitute for skill, common sense and good judgement acquired through your own experience.

Conditions in the canyons change on a daily basis, and you may find any route to be substantially more difficult than stated. You may get lost. You may fall off something or get flash-flooded. You may pull out anchors that look very solid. Please prepare carefully for all your outdoor adventures, and use caution and judgement at all times.

We hope you understand that adventure requires some risk. Let's hope your adventures are not TOO adventurous.

“ “It’s not really an adventure until something goes wrong.”  ”
