Street Art City Walks: Montreal

Montreal Street Art

Street art in Montreal is celebrated. The creativity it brings to the multicultural streets has been encouraged by the city for the past 60 years. A proportion of the budget for the redevelopment of public spaces goes on street art, which has enabled the creation of over 3,500 murals so far.

Street artists flock to make their mark on the skyscrapers and community spaces during events such as Mural Festival; so, as you explore, you’re sure to notice artist signatures that are recognised across the globe as well as some local Montreal favourites.

The impossibly long streets of Montreal (Sainte-Catherine alone is 9 miles!) mean that it is difficult to take in one street in a day, let alone the whole city — not if you want to be thorough. So, we would recommend picking one district at a time, and exploring it in its entirety, before you move on to the next.

Spotlight Artists

Responsible for some of the most lifelike and large-scale portraits in the city, Ledo is a Montreal-based artist who blends photorealism with abstract colour.

Unceded Voices

A collective of mostly Native American artists who use their talents to represent issues facing different racial groups, primarily indigenous women, in society.

A Kazakh-Canadian artist whose distinctive style combines patterns of Eastern European folk art with rich visual narratives.

A Canadian artist known for painting on roads just as often as he paints on walls, with a clean, graphic, playful style.

A Montreal collective of artists and designers, each with a unique style. Each mural is different, taking the form of anything from naive cartoons to photorealist paintings.

Saint-Laurent Boulevard

Saint-Laurent Boulevard is known for being something of a cultural, commercial, and artistic hub in Montreal. It stretches seven miles long, and each metre of it is worth investigating for potential artworks.

The 2018 Mural Festival in Montreal left behind a number of incredible works, including Demsky’s optical illusion, inspired by science fiction, and Michael Reeder’s As Real As My Shadow.

On the corner of Prince Arthur Street, you’ll see Kevin Ledo’s portrait of Leonard Cohen, as well as brightly coloured piece by Felipe Pantone that seems to invoke the pixelated screens of old computers. On Prince Arthur Street itself is a 1,200 sq ft swirling mural by Carlito Dalceggio.

At number 3590, Jonathan Bergeron has painted a captivating image of a dilapidated clifftop house with roses emerging out of its roof. At 3523: a classic Pop Art portrait by Dface.

A rare figurative piece by Scribe lives beside the Bank Nationale.

Taking his work to new dimensions, the artist Roadsworth has painted the intersection with Pine Avenue: hands clutching at barbed wire.

Very deliberately placed above a tombstone maker’s shop, Phlegm has painted a twisted, geometric creature.

The founder of the ASHOP Crew, Fluke, has paid tribute to Jackie Robinson, the first black payer in Major League Baseball, with a colourful mural.

At 4328, a vibrant Miss Me and Aydin Matlabi collaboration.

Brightening up a car park, and in complete juxtaposition with its surroundings, PICHIAVO’s mural mixes classical art with bold graffiti in their depiction of Diana/Artemis.

Refuel Point: Schwartz’s

Schwartz’s has a reputation for serving the best smoked meats in the city. Be sure to stop by for a taste of this Canadian favourite.

Mont-Royal Plateau

Though Saint-Laurent Boulevard runs through the heart of the Mont-Royal Plateau, it’s essential that you venture onto the streets either side. The artwork is less concentrated, spread across the seven blocks between Sherbrooke Street and Mont-Royal Avenue, but there are plenty of gems to discover.

On the Rue Saint-Dominique , the artist MEGGS has an entire building dedicated to his work. Look out for the shells, flowers, and mystical waters. An eye-catching female portrait by RONE also stands out.

Park Avenue is home to an instantly recognisable typographical work by Ben Eine. Between the Napoleon Street and Rue Roy East junctions is a dreamlike mural painted by Tremblay and Poni, both of whom are known for their ethereal visual storytelling.

On the intersection between Saint-Laurent Boulevard and Guilbault Street : a quirky mural by Ola Volo.

Near the Fine Arts Museum on Crescent Street , iconic and unmissable on the city’s skyline, is the 1,000 sq m portrait of Leonard Cohen, painted by Gene Pendon and El Mac .

At 9 miles long, Sainte-Catherine Street has many pieces of art to see, if you can manage the trek. A favourite is the Fear and Loathing in Montreal mural.

On the Rue Saint-Cuthbert , at its junction with Clark Street, a mural by Five8 occupies the wall. Complete with abstract neon lettering and a nearly geometric approach to shading, the female portrait is typical of Five8’s style.

On Clark Street itself, between the junctions with Rue Marie-Anne West and Rue Rachel East, you’ll see one of ROA ’s detailed depictions of death and decay. On the corner of Rue Evans: a piece by Axel Void. Pixel Pancho stakes his colourful claim on the space between Mont-Royal Avenue and Marie-Anne Street East.

Towards the eastern end of Clark Street, it intersects with René-Lévesque Boulevard West . At number 36, you’ll see the famous Chinatown Mural, which marks your entry into a new neighbourhood.

On the corner of Jeanne-Mance Street , as it meets Sherbrooke Street, you’ll find a mural of mythical creatures painted by Mexico City’s Curiot.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jade Déca (@jade.deca)

To the west of the Mont-Royal Plateau, is Mile End. An essential stop is Saint-Viateur Street , home to an impressive line-drawing of the Montreal skyline and another piece by Ola Volo.

Refuel Point: Saint-Viateur Bagels

Serving the best bagels in the city, cooked in a wood-fired oven. No further explanation needed!

At number 5605 De Gaspé Avenue , at Aire Commune, Ola Volo has created a 15,000 sq ft mural. This makes it the largest mural to ever have been produced by a female artist in Canada.

A little off-the-beaten track is the Van Horne Overpass . The pillars and blank spaces underneath are covered in artwork, including an image of the Minotaur seemingly holding up the road above.

Further north, on Laurier Avenue East , in the playground of the École Laurier, is a totally unique mural with a fantasy feel. The almost radioactive colours are reflected in the tarmac surface on rainy days.

Saint-Henri and Little Burgundy

The districts of Saint-Henri (affectionately called The Hen by locals) and Little Burgundy sit towards the waterfront on the east side of the Mont-Royal Plateau. Saint-Henri is rich in political artwork; much created by Native American artists. The group known as Unceded Voices: Anticolonial Street Artists’ Convergence, have painted many stunning images of indigenous women on Saint-Henri streets. On the corner of Saint-Antoine Street and Saint-Jacques Street, you can see one of these portraits, painted by Jessica Sabogal in 2017.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Unceded Voices (@unceded_voices)

In Little Burgundy, Saint-Jacques Street embodies this neighbourhood’s status as one of the birthplaces of Jazz in Montreal and North America. Many murals depict Jazz and Rock legends, including Kevin Ledo’s portrait of Daisy Peterson Sweeney. Between Richmond Avenue and Guy Street, you’ll see Roadsworth’s homage to the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Steel Company of Canada and Jazz.

Take your pick of the many cafés on Notre-Dame Street with bold graffiti in their doorways.

Complete Guide: Montreal Street Art

by Melissa Giroux

montreal street art

Want to check out Montreal street art during your stay in Montreal? We got your back. In this post, you’ll find all the best spots and events to admire street art around the city.

Under Pressure Festival

Montreal’s first street art festival, Under Pressure , was first celebrated in 1996 and continues to take over Quartier des Spectacles every August, making it the oldest running festival of urban culture in the world.

For the past 23 years, street artists, graffiti writers, deejays, emcees, and street dancers have been getting together in a radiance of urban community and hip hop culture. The festival celebrates urban culture with over a hundred local, national, and international artists taking part in the festivities.

There’s always plenty going on during the festival, including the creation of massive murals, musical performances, conferences, street dance battles, kid’s activities, and more.

Alongside these incredible artistic performances, an unmissable event of the MURAL Festival is the gastronomic culinary event Grill Saint-Laurent, a culinary contest in which restaurant owners create and present visitors with dishes prepared on the grill. The festival is located on Saint-Catherine Street, between Saint-Laurent and Saint-Denis Streets, which is closed during the weekend to allow for artists to get to work creating murals and other pieces.

During this weekend, the closed street will also be home to activities such as basketball tournaments, a skate park, and music performances. General entry to the festival is free, with fees required for some activities.

MURAL Festival

Another of Montreal’s street art festivals, MURAL transforms Saint-Laurent Boulevard into an open-air art museum every June. The eleven-day festival features local and international artists to celebrate Montreal as the global destination for urban art, collaborating in a colorful atmosphere of music and art. The festival holds live art, music, exhibitions, and artist talks.

During the festival, MURAL runs various walking (and running!) tours to help you make the most of the urban art that the city has to offer. With over 30 tours to choose from, participants will be guided by a knowledgeable tour guide through a 90-minute walk of Montreal’s best street art spots.

The walking tours cost $20 + taxes. Alternatively, a private tour is available, which includes 2 alcoholic beverage vouchers and a $20 voucher for the BBQ Grill St-Laurent per person.

When the festival is not on, Spade & Palacio hosts a street art walking tour every Sunday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday, taking you through some of the city’s most infamous street art spots, including Saint-Laurent Boulevard and Plateau Mont-Royal. This tour is 2 hours long and costs $40 + taxes per person.

Saint-Laurent Boulevard and Saint-Catherine Street

If not visiting Montreal during either of the street art festivals, there’s no need to miss out on Montreal’s street art scene. One of the busiest streets in Montreal, Saint-Laurent is infamous for its impressive graffiti and street art portfolio.

As the focal point of the MURAL festival every year, Saint-Laurent has become a living open-air art gallery that’s ready to be experienced year-round. Saint-Laurent is also home to many vintage and artisan shops, boutiques, bars, and restaurants, making the street the perfect area for those seeking a street art crawl day trip.

The perfect stop-off for those exploring the art of Saint-Laurent, the infamous Schwartz’s Deli can be found along the street, serving Montreal’s world-famous smoked meat. Saint-Laurent also intersects with Saint-Catherine Street, the primary commercial artery of Downtown Montreal and another hotspot for street art and murals. Best known for its history, culture, and commerce, Saint-Catherine is also known for its spectacular art scene.

Every July, Saint-Catherine opens up into a must-visit street art experience, featuring musicians, DJs, graffiti artists, and acrobats. With over 300 boutiques on the street, many of them participating in the event, the commercial Saint-Catherine comes alive with creativity.

For those wanting to take their own street art Montreal walking tour, graffiti bloggers at Wall2Wall Montreal have created a map of the suggested walking tour route to best experience all of the street art that the city has to offer. The map connects all of the murals that have been done during the MURAL Festival, other major street art pieces in the city, as well as some urban secrets located in back alleys.

The starting point of the self-walking tour is the parking lot behind LNDMRK, known as ‘mural central’, near Prince-Arthur Street. The tour then goes up Saint-Dominique and Saint-Laurent East, heading back down Clark Street and onto Saint-Laurent West.

Plateau Mont-Royal and Mile End

The area combining neighborhoods Plateau Mont-Royal and Mile End has become very much an urban hub of Montreal. These two neighborhoods are rich in the artistic community, in which you will find colorful houses and spiral staircases among the street art that you seek.

The Plateau is home to many boutiques, cafes, and amazing restaurants to try typical Quebec food . While street art may be a little harder to find than Saint-Laurent, what you do find won’t disappoint. The Plateau is an up-and-coming street art locale, thanks to the Plateau’s Murality Program, which allows building owners to apply for a grant for the creation of a mural, promoting the growth and increase of urban art in the neighborhood.

Not far from the Plateau, Mile End, the hipster capital of Canada, boasts various giant murals that are well worth a visit. While neither area is as concentrated with street art as Saint-Laurent, the street art featured certainly makes these neighborhoods worth a visit.

For those wanting a more museum-like experience of street art, Station 16 is a popular urban art gallery located on Saint-Laurent founded by the organizers of the MURAL Festival. Open all year long, Station 16 exhibits a combination of local and international artists, connecting them through a common passion for urban art and graffiti.

The gallery has previously featured exhibitions from street artists such as Stikki Peaches, Kashink, and Chris Dyer.

Also located on Saint-Laurent, the Yves Laroche gallery is committed to exposing works of avant-garde artists combining graffiti, tattooing, comics, and pop art. First opened in Old Montreal in 1991, Yves Laroche has established itself as a place to see some of the best contemporary urban art in the area. Some of the artists featured in the gallery include Banksy, Bast, and Roa.

Montreal’s Boulevard Saint Laurent Is Canada’s Most Colorful Street

M ontreal’s Boulevard Saint Laurent is Canada’s most colorful street. In fact, there’s a fair argument to make that it’s the most colorful street among the many street-art-friendly cities in the world (including the pops of color in nearby Toronto ).

Full-wall murals, painted over building entrances, and small pieces from the Mile End neighborhood to Chinatown create a two-plus-mile-long art walk. Paintings and paste-ups fill the nooks and crannies between windows and businesses, and there’s street art literally on the streets. Not to mention the street art galleries like Station 16 and plenty of sanctioned tours.

“As a street artist, Montreal’s big enough to maintain a certain level of anonymity but small enough that you can cover a lot of ground and create a certain buzz around a street campaign,” says Peter Gibson, a Montreal street artist who works under the name Roadsworth . He also adds that “there’s a bit of an ‘anything goes’ attitude in Montreal. There’s less pressure to be ‘cool’ or to fit in, which I think can be conducive to experimentation.”

While Gibson has a different definition for street art, graffiti, and mural art, “at the end of the day it’s just semantics.” Little Burgundy, Notre-Dame-de-Grâce (NDG), and Hochelaga are the best neighborhoods for graffiti, while the Plateau, Mile End, and Mile Ex neighborhoods have the most street art with posters, paste-ups, and stencils. The Plateau is also the center for murals thanks to the Mural Festival.

Festivals are one of the biggest things pushing Montreal’s, and Saint Laurent’s, street art forward. An annual graffiti and hip-hop festival called Under Pressure that’s held in Quartier Latin has been running since 1996, making it the longest-running festival of its kind. Then there’s the Mural Festival , which started in 2012. The Mural Festival invites artists from around the world to take over a portion of Saint Laurent. Every June, the artists paint large-scale murals live in front of millions of festival-goers. As of 2019, the festival has added nearly 100 works to Saint Laurent. The art stays up after the festival (at least until it eventually gets painted over in subsequent festivals), adding to the legal murals paid for by Montreal’s public art program, the semi-legal works, and the illegally painted street art along Saint Laurent.

street art tour montreal

The pieces that define the city are as diverse as they are plentiful. Take the piece on the building of Dirty Dogs. Done by an American who paints by the name Buff Monster, it depicts colorful, one-eyed anthropomorphized ice cream cones. Another shows an elderly lady spray painting a wall orange. This one was done by the street art group Ashop , which started in Montreal in 2009 and claims to have collectively painted more than 100,000 square feet of walls in six countries for 250 clients. One of Gibson’s favorite artists is Labrona , whose paste-ups and drawings are found mostly around Plateau and Mile End. Plateau has what Gibson believes is the highest concentration of artists, though gentrification is rapidly pushing out artists who can no longer afford rent and studio space.

Other works you might see include graffiti tags, sculptures, and structures that play music. This embrace is part of how the city came to be called Mural City. It’s no accident that Montreal, and Boulevard Saint Laurent in particular, became a hub for art. The city and state provide tax breaks to private businesses that set aside $100,000 or one percent of the construction cost to art installations.

Not every piece you see on the street is a sanctioned one, though. Montreal has its fair share of famous artists who work without permission, as well.

“I think the general population [of Montreal] might be more open to that activism than other cities since Montrealers and Quebecers in general, given their history, have a certain rebelliousness compared to the rest of Canada,” Gibson says. “Quebecers have a strong sense of justice and a tradition of resistance to power. Montreal has always appreciated and celebrated the rebellious spirit. Most of Montreal’s greatest heroes were rebels in one way or another.”

One of the most famous goes by the name MissMe . Her works are wheat-pasted onto walls, and each has an activism angle that addresses issues of race, gender, and class (though she too has worked with brands and official installations, as well sold pieces to Madonna). In Montreal, the line between street artist, sanctioned artist, and activist artist working illegally is blurry.

Today, an increasing number of cities around the world agree that more street art is better than less. With street art, the city turns into an ever-changing museum of murals that’s open to all. There are few streets where that’s more obvious than Montreal’s Saint Laurent.
