Time Out says

Be inspired to plan your dream trip at this free travel two-day expo

Experiencing a severe case of wanderlust? Don’t worry, we get it – the past two years have been a blur of cancelled plans, delayed flights and border closures. But the good news is that travel is well and truly back, and if you’re looking to finally plan the adventure of a lifetime, there’s one event you can’t miss: the Holiday and Travel Show.

Taking place at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on November 5-6, the Holiday and Travel Show is your one-stop destination for all things related to domestic and international travel. There will be experts and exhibitors from different areas of the industry covering everything from tours and cruises to hotels, airlines and tourism bodies – essentially, all the elements you need to plan and book your big holiday.

It’s also a wonderful opportunity to score some handy tips, save money and maybe win an epic prize. You can even chat with presenters from Getaway , who will be on hand at the event to share valuable travel information.

“The Holiday and Travel Show will give people the chance to talk to owners and operators from across the globe so that they can get first-hand knowledge about their next trip,” says Gary Fitz-Roy, managing director of Expertise Events. “This event will provide everyone with inspiration, but also information to help them plan and book their next holiday.”

The Travel and Holiday Show is a free event. For further information and to register your interest, head to the website .

Feeling inspired to go on a cruise? The Disney Cruise Line is finally coming to Australia .

Hi, We are booked to be at the Royal Melbourne Show on Fri 23-Sep-2016. I have not been able to download a planner of events on the day. This would be ever so useful in charting out what we’d like to do. Fashion, ringside and show events, food precincts are part of what we’re looking for. We know where to find the standards like the wonderful Art & Craft. Great if you are able to help.

Hi Shirley,

Check out the showguide which has maps, attractions and schedules of everything there is to see at the show.

Have a great time! Jess

Hi, I was wondering if you could please tell me if there are going to be the ultimate ride wristbands this year (they give you access to any ride for free as long as you show the wristband). As there has been in previous years. If so I do I get my hands on a couple of them!? Thanks, Lil

The “Ticket to Ride” passes are not available this year. Instead, the Royal Melbourne Show is selling ride passes which range between $20 – $140 depending on how many rides you want to cover. You can purchase a ride pass.

Regards, Jess

Hi Do you where you can purchase Ticket to ride Includes entry and $50 Ride voucher for $62 Thanks

Is there an unlimited ride pass? Meaning, going on all rides, all day? Or, do you purchase individual tickets for each ride?

There is no “unlimited ride pass” this year. There are passes which you can purchase which give you a discount on rides. Eg: Pay $20 and get $26 worth of ride; pay $30 for $40 of rides; pay $50 for $70 of rides, etc, etc.

You can find all the details here. Just note that these ride passes are only available online, you cannot purchase them at the gate.

What is the process of purchasing tickets? Where do you buy them and how long does it take to get them?

You can purchase tickets online or at the gate.

For online tickets, get them through the official website here. You can also add ride passes to your ticket which will save you money on rides on the day. Just note that if you want a ride pass, they cant be purchased at the gate and must be purchased online.

If you purchase online, you will receive an email immediately with your tickets.

Hi, I was just wondering if Student ID is valid for the purchase of a concession ticket?

Also my mum has a concession card which has my name and my siblings names on the card. Does this mean I can use this concession card to purchase a concession ticket?

Yes, student ID is valid for a concession ticket. Not sure about your mum’s concession card, just stick with your student ID and you’ll get the discount.

Hey, just wondering what the price range is for unlimited rides and if they are available on the day? Also, what are the opening and closing times?

Opening times are 10am – 9pm.

Ride passes range between $20 – $140 depending on how many rides you want to cover. You can purchase a ride pass here.

Hi, How much discount does a RACV member get? Thanks

RACV members save 30% when buying online. Here is a link to the official ticket page for RACV members.

Best regards, Jess

Hello, I am wanting to go to the Melbourne show with my friends and i which we are 14 years of age. Do we need to have someone over the age of 18 if you are under the age of 18.

Cheers, Thomas

There is no requirement that you be accompanied by a parent to the show, as it is a family friendly event.

But I still recommend checking with your parents to make sure its ok to go without them… you never know – they might want to go too!

Hi just wondering if the show guide has been released yet in the herald sun. Thanks

It was released in the Herald Sun on the 7th of September. If you subscribe to the Herald Sun you can access a digital copy online. However, you can also get information on showbags here and the daily schedule.

Hope this helps! Jess

Hi Jess, I was wondering when they will be announcing which live acts or star celebrity/singers that will be performing live on stage as well as doing the meet and greets, cause on the Royal Melbourne show website it still says details coming soon. I do know they have already announced that Taylor Henderson will be there, but the website hasnt announced anyone else as of yet, thanks.

I am expecting an update this weekend. I will update our page with new info as it comes to hand. I understand the cast of Home and Away will be doing meet and greets and a few more artists will be announced. Check back with us!

Cheers Jess

What time is Fireworks on Sept. 17?

The fireworks will run every night from approximately 8.15pm – 8.30pm.

Have a great time at the Show!

Show staff are saying no fireworks this year can you please confirm.

Hi Dannielle,

I have looked through their Facebook comments and on their website and it looks like there arent any fireworks this year.

As a substitute, they mention that every night at the Show After Dark, the sky will be lit up by a show-stopping laser show set to the beat of fantastic tunes from 7:15pm in the Entertainment Precinct.

Thanks Michael

Will you be able to purchase the ticket to ride package at the show this year?

Yes, you can purchase them online now. There are a number of options, but please note, they will not be available at the gate.

Here is the link to purchasing tickets and ride passes online.

Hi, if you buy tickets, is it all day?

Yes, one ticket will get you in for the full day. The Show runs from 10am to 9pm each day.

Are there any Show tickets that include the cost of the train tickets? I saw there is discount for RACV members, can you tell me the discount amount please? How do we get to the show from Watergardens Station? Someone said we go to North Melbourne then take the show train. Can you tell me how to get the information, please. Thank you.

Show tickets must be purchased separately from train tickets.

For a limited time RACV Members can purchase early-bird admission tickets online for family and friends and save up to 30%. This offer ends at 9pm on the 16 September 2016. Purchase your discounted tickets here.

For public transport from Watergardens, you will need to travel to North Melbourne and catch the Show Train from North Melbourne station. This will take you to the Showgrounds Station. These trains leave North Melbourne approximately every 20 minutes and run all throughout the show period. You can check specific times through the Public Transport Victoria website here.

Enjoy the Royal Melbourne Show 2016!

Hi, I would like to know how much it will be for my son to get in to the show, he is 15 years old. Thankyou

Your son will be eligible for a concession/student ticket which is $24.00.

Will Taylor Henderson be performing there this year? Thanks

No word yet on the official line-up of performers for 2016. Check back with us and I will update the page once new information is released.

Hi, just wanted to ask when will the show bag guide come out in the Herald Sun? Thankyou

In previous years, the guide has come out in around the first week of September.

Hi there, I have a carer card for my son and I’m on the pension for him. Just wondering if there is any further discount for carer card?

Carers are able to enter for free when attending the person they care for. No need to purchase a ticket, simply show your carers card at the gate when entering with your son.

Tickets go on sale on 18 July 2016. Have a great time at the Royal Melbourne Show!

Hello. We are coming to Australia from the UK in September and will be visiting the Show. I see you offer reductions for “concessions” and I’m wondering if this includes overseas visitors. My husband is registered disabled I’m his full time carer and he is the holder of a BLUE BADGE in the UK which entitles us to free disabled parking and reduced rates on tickets to events like yours here in the UK. Are the concession prices there going to be available to us as well? Kind regards, Susan

This is a good question and unfortunately, I am not sure of the answer.

We are not the official organisers of the event, so I recommend that you contact them via this email address: Email: [email protected]

I note that there is disabled parking located right next to the Showgrounds at our famous Flemington Racecourse. However I understand there is still a fee attached.

I hope the RASV is able to assist you. Enjoy your time in Australia. Regards, Jess

Melbourne Holiday Packages

As you embark on an enchanting journey of this artistic city, it’s recommended to explore it like a local and experience the diverse collection of the nearby surroundings of its inner cities. Notwithstanding how long the divide seems between the hipster Fitzroy and flashy South Yarra, once you make it to their bars, cafes and restaurants, and get acquainted with their festivals and people, you will notice the pleasant environs transcending all the borders. And, it just opens a bevy of opportunities for you to let you enjoy your leisure time! You may head to Victoria St. for Vietnamese food, Balaclava for Jewish bakeries, Footscray for African, Lygon St. for old-school Italian, and Chinatown for every Asian cuisine. And, as you go towards the heart of the city that’s down 230 laneways, it’s here you will find the true nature of the city where its lanes are brimming with world-class bars, restaurants and street art.

Take a package of Melbourne holidays , and get to explore the Central Business District. Stretch it to the Docklands- popular for shopping and waterside dining, its pedestrian plazas are adorned with sculpture, public murals and light displays. Cherish some blissful moments in the midst of leafy boulevards and magnificent ancient architectures. And, linger here till the dawn arrives to witness the transformation of its laneways courtesy the bubbling clubs and chic cocktail bars that may flip your mind into crazy one and make your night. Further, as you walk along the river banks, gear up to witness the world-class performance at the Arts Precinct down  South Kilda Road. As you explore the hidden treasures of this city and come across its edgy places down laneways and on warehouse rooftops, you will realise that Melbourne doesn’t have to try hard to be ranked amongst one of the coolest tourist destinations that it certainly is!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Yes you do! If you’re coming here just as a tourist to visit Australia, you’ll need a Visitor Visa.

If you’re coming here to work while you’re on holiday, you’ll need either a Working Holiday Visa (417) or a Work and Holiday Visa (462), depending on which country you’re from.

You can find more information and a list of the various visas by clicking the button below.

We recommend organising this as soon as you know you’re coming to Australia. The application can be completed through your travel agent, or directly through the same Australian Government website as above. We always recommend checking the Australian Government website for any specific enquiries.

Absolutely! It doesn’t matter if you’re coming to this beautiful country to work, visit friends or family, study, sunbathe with the kangaroos or perfect your Australian accent. All of our travellers will still get the same treatment!

According to the Australian Government, you need $5,000AUD in your bank account on arrival if you’re coming on a Working Holiday visa. This is a good savings target if you are wanting to either travel for a month or set yourself up for working and living in Australia after the Welcome to Travel week.

However, everybody is different and to give yourself the best chance of experiencing as many things as possible in Australia, we would recommend just saving up as much as possible before you come travelling.

Of course you are – anyone would be – and of course we will! Something we love is how close our travellers get on tour, and how they become one big family at the end.

Everyone’s in the same boat, and you will make friends for life.

Expect the best experience ever!  As long as you’re polite and friendly then you’ll be fine. To get the best out of your experience we recommend talking to people in your dorm as soon as possible. Travel broadens the mind and that is mainly because of people you meet. Listen to where they’ve been, what they’ve loved, what they recommend, their funniest stories, all of it! This will be you in a few months!

All dorms have lockers, but you will need to buy a small padlock to use them.

We aim to try and get everyone on Welcome To Melbourne in the same dorm, but if you have any special requests such as, you want to be in an all female dorm or you want to upgrade to your own room., then will be able to assist you.

About 70% of people on tour are actually solo travellers. This tour is a perfect way to meet other people and experience new things together. So many of our travellers make friends for life on our Welcome tours!

Our tours cater for people aged 18-39 years old. The average age varies each week and that’s what we love about it.

You sure can! We create a WhatsApp group chat the week leading up to the tour.

Yes! You just need to let us know who you’re travelling with beforehand and we’ll make sure you’re in the same room.

Yes definitely! As long as you tell us who you’re travelling with we’ll make sure you’re in the same room. If you’d like to upgrade to a private room then this is possible on the Extras part of the checkout.

Definitely! This can be done at the time of booking on the Extras page at Checkout. Alternatively you can add them on closer to the time. We will send you an email 4 weeks before the tour and this will ask you if you’d like to add any on.

Absolutely, we recommend booking 2 extra nights after the tour. This can be done at the time of booking on the Extras page at Checkout. Alternatively you can add them on closer to the time. We will send you an email 4 weeks before the tour and this will ask you if you’d like to add any on.

We include a lot of meals, as well as some delicious tastings. Outside of that, you’ll be able to find lunch for between $6-15 and dinner for $10-$20. If you want to save money, you can always team up with people and cook dinners at the hostel!

For drinks, the welcome dinner will include a drink, you’ll be given two on your food and drink tour, and another four during the bar crawl – how good is that! Outside of that, drinks usually cost between $7-11 but we can also point you in the direction of plenty of places with happy hours offering drinks for $5-6.

Because accommodation, activities and some food and drink is already included, we would suggest that $200-$250 of extra spending money during your week with us will be enough!

The $99 deposit is required to secure your booking. But don’t worry! Full payment is only required 21 days before your departure date, which gives you time to save money for it!

However, if you make a booking within 21 days of your departure date, you will need to pay the full amount at the time of booking.

Once you know you’re coming to Australia and that you’d like the best possible welcome here, we’d recommend placing your $99 deposit right away, especially as we offer free date changes.

Our Welcome to Melbourne tour is often fully booked 3 months in advance.

Yes! If you pay your deposit and later realise you have to change your date, don’t panic.

You can change the date of your booking, unlimited times and subject to availability, up until 14* days before your departure date.

*Normally 28 days but currently 14 due to COVID19. Please see our terms and conditions  here .

The Great Ocean Road Add On is an amazing way to carry on your journey as a group. You don’t know these people right now, but you’ll become friends across the week. The Welcome to Melbourne tour finishes on the Sunday, from Tuesday we have booked 5 days of car hire and 4 nights of accommodation meaning that you can go on a self-guided group adventure together. We give you an advised itinerary and off you go for an amazing road trip adventure!

That’s up to you and we’re here to help with that! Everyone has different plans for their time in Australia. You might even find that your plans may change halfway during the tour after meeting some new friends.

Either way, the Welcome To Travel team is here to support you before, during and after the welcome week. Whether it’s work or travel you’re looking to organise or get advice on, we’ll be able to help you.

We will go through options that suit you specifically in the 1-on-1 sessions on the Saturday of the tour. We then have our Experience Team who will be there to help you throughout your whole time in Australia!

Of course! During our travel presentation, we will give you an overview of all the beautiful and exciting destinations and experiences around Australia.

Following this, during your 1-on-1 sessions with our team, we will talk more specifically about what exactly you want to see and do, and we’ll help you plan everything. We want to make sure you have the most amazing adventure possible while you’re here!

With our help, that’s how!

As part of your Welcome to Melbourne package you will receive exclusive tips, resources and guidance towards finding a job and farm work in Australia.

We will present you with all of the basic information needed to get started, and give you access to our huge database of employers and contacts in sectors such as hospitality, retail, construction, sales and marketing and many more.

We also send out a weekly update email that highlights the most recent job and farm work opportunities we come across.

Depending when you land you will receive your Australian Sim Card on Friday morning before the tour or on Monday morning of the tour, during the meet and greet session.

Don’t panic! You will be able to jump on the free wi-fi at the hostel and airport beforehand to let everyone back home know that you got to Melbourne safe and sound.

This is basically a personal identity number created for you by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). It is required if you want to work in Australia, so that you can be correctly taxed on your income from day one.

You will provide this number to each employer you have while you are in Australia and your tax will be deducted from your wage accordingly, just as it would be in your home country.

If you’re travelling as a tourist for just a few weeks, you don’t need one – a pre-loaded travel cash card will work just fine!

If you’re here for a longer period of time (for example, on a Working Holiday Visa) then it’s highly recommended to open an Australian bank account. Not only will you save a lot on exchange/transaction fees, but employers will only pay wages into an Australian account. It’s also an extremely easy process that we will organise for you.

You can fast-track the whole process by creating a  Wise account , so that you can already have Australian dollars in your account for when you get here. But don’t worry about all of this now, we’ll explain it all soon!

Medicare is Australia’s health care scheme, which allows Australians and some overseas visitors to access certain health services at little or no cost. Only a handful of countries are eligible to apply for Medicare in Australia, including:

Belgium, Finland, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, The Republic of Ireland, Slovenia, Sweden and the United Kingdom

Click here   to see details for eligibility and details for enrolment, such as what documents you will need to bring to service centres. We will also explain this in more detail when you arrive and point you in the right direction.

Things to do

Where to eat, where to stay in melbourne.

Melbourne is a vibrant, diverse city, and each suburb has a distinct vibe of its own. Some of the best areas to stay in Melbourne include fashionable Fitzroy for a touch of class, Southbank if you love the buzz of the city’s cafe and restaurant culture, St Kilda for a relaxing day by the sea, and Brunswick for the true bohemian Melbourne experience.

Read travel guide

Melbourne City

Basing yourself in the city proper is one of the best ways to put yourself near most of Melbourne's most exciting attractions. There's so much to see and do just within the 5km that comprise the CDB – that knocking items off your to-do list every day will be a breeze. Further, staying in the city means that every possible amenity from restaurants to gyms will be readily available to you.

Southbank and South Melbourne

Southbank and South Melbourne are home to the city's arts precincts as well as the famed sprawling Crown Entertainment Complex. This area boasts a dense collection of hotels with rooms available year-round. Located a short walk from Southern Cross Station on Spencer Street, this is an especially great spot to be if you're looking to immerse yourself in Melbourne's cultural atmosphere but still be able to move around the city with ease.

Another area with wide hotel variety, staying in Docklands will put you even closer to Southern Cross Station! Shop ‘til you drop at DFO South Wharf, take a ride on the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel, or head to Etihad Stadium to see the Dons play the Saints before retiring to your hotel only a few short blocks away. Staying in Docklands puts a little bit of everything Melbourne has to offer right at your doorstep.

Frequently asked questions

Your appetite! Melbourne is known as the culinary capital of Australia, so be sure to pack plenty of loose-fitting attire so you can scoff and sip to your heart’s content. In terms of packing essentials, locals joke that Melbourne weather experiences ‘four seasons in one day’, so opt for layers and comfortable shoes. Pack light, the shopping in Melbourne is next level.

Get wonderfully lost in the laneways of Melbourne's CBD and discover quirky cafes, street art and boutique stores. Take a stroll along St Kilda beach or roll out a rug and enjoy some fish and chips as the sun sinks. Phillip Island Nature Park’s world-famous Penguin Parade is a must for first timers, while sports lovers can’t miss the chance to catch a game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Life happens - we get it! Read more here :

Melbourne is incredible all year round, so it really depends on what you hope to see and do while you’re in town. Autumn (March, April, May) bathes the city in beautiful ambers and browns, while winter (June, July, August) is the perfect excuse to rug up in warm coats and scarfs. If you’re heading in summer, be sure to pack your swimsuit to soak in the sunshine on St Kilda beach.

Sip your way around Melbourne’s famous cafes, or better yet, learn the art for yourself with a coffee-making class. Get lost in laneways, watch the seriously adorable Penguin Parade, catch a game at the MCG, take a ride on the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel, explore on foot, discover the city’s famous culinary culture, browse boutiques, hit the markets, roll out a towel on St Kilda beach, see a show, find hidden bars – the list goes on and on!

Seven revives Melbourne Weekender

Five years off screen, but seven revives a local travel show to take on a long-running competitor..

  • Published by David Knox
  • on April 12, 2024

Five years ago Seven made some major cuts to its travel shows before deciding to reverse that decision after a sponsor backlash.

One of those, Melbourne Weekender , is finally returning to screens with a refreshed cast and ready to explore city hotspots and regional destinations. Such shows are also strategic for branded content.

It will also take on Nine’s Postcards head to head in a Sunday slot.

The new presenting team includes Nicky Buckley, Gary Mehigan, Bonnie Anderson, Brad Hodge, Jane Bunn, Sonia Marinelli and Abbey Holmes.

melbourne holiday and travel show

Nicky Buckley said: “I’m excited to be showcasing our beautiful eclectic Melbourne and Victoria and all that it has to offer. I’ve found some real gems myself while shooting the series that I never knew existed.”

Jane Bunn said: “I can’t wait to share with you what I’ve been up to on Melbourne Weekender. It feels like I’m experiencing a new adventure every weekend as I get to peek behind the scenes of some of Melbourne’s best things to do.”

Bonnie Anderson said: “I feel proud to be a part of Melbourne Weekender and show off the beautiful city of Melbourne. Meeting new people and having new experiences in this city is always fun and having the opportunity to interview and learn about these places on a deeper level is the best part about being part of the show.”

The debut episode of Melbourne Weekender sees Bonnie visit Co.Bake Space, a venue redefining the art of baking and pop up spaces. Sonia offers road trip inspiration with a drive to NRMA Phillip Island Beachfront Holiday Park and Gary tastes the delights of Vietnam in Springvale, home to one of the biggest Vietnamese communities in Melbourne.

Each episode will feature a My Melbourne Weekender segment where familiar locals take a host on a tour of their go-to Melbourne venues. The first episode will see Nicky spend the day with Australian fashion entrepreneur Nadia Bartel, experiencing some of her favourite places for a perfect weekend in Melbourne.

If it’s anything like Sydney Weekender it’s less like a travel show and more like a restaurant review show

Nadia Bartel? hard pass.

It’s such a shame to see this and other similar local travel shows regularly not matching Melbourne’s multicultural melting pot of offerings with more diverse casting. So so beige.

Don’t those ancient Border re-runs, surprisingly, still rate though? I’ve even seen them occasionally higher than Getaway. Surely much more expensive to produce a lifestyle/travel show. Seven must be buoyed by Nine’s show’s longevity and popularity, maybe they feel Border is getting rather stale now and the same episodes over and over again.

Because Channel 7 have given up AFL on Sunday afternoons as they were out bid by payTV operator. To think we have an inquiry into market power of the supermarkets (when there are three large players) – we need to break up the monopoly on televising sport (where one player is allowed to have all the matches). PS I wish Melbourne Weekender all the best.

What are you talking about? This AFL season is still part of the old rights deal.

The only change this year is that there are more Thursday night games than last year, hence less Sunday games. Normally the Thursday games were 5 to start & then 5-6 during the byes rounds which already didn’t include Sunday games on 7.

The new deal which starts next year means that 7 doesn’t have Saturday night matches not Sunday afternoon.

I don’t think 7 Melb have given up Sunday arvo footy. Sunday arvo footy won’t be shown on 7 until R10 when Port face Hawks at Adelaide. The reason with the change is due to more Thursday matches. A typical Saturday arvo scheudle shows ancient repeats of border. It would be a good choice to show melb weekender in Saturday 5:30pm.

Seven needs to piggy back on Gary Mehigan’s huge success in India, based on his socials he is a massive success obviously based on MasterChef. They should follow his time in that food lovers paradise.

Holiday expert explains how Spain's new £97 daily charge will affect your holiday

Holiday expert explains how Spain's new £97 daily charge will affect your holiday

All has been explained on the new tourist rule that was introduced in spain.

Joshua Nair

Joshua Nair

As the weather gets warmer, a lot of us are beginning to get onto those flight and hotel websites to book a summer getaway, with many often favouring Spain as a nearby holiday location with amazing weather.

It is well documented that the European country is a popular holiday hotspot for Brits , so you can imagine that it was a shock when people found out about the new money law put in place there for tourists.

Spain is a popular choice among Brits for summer getaways. (Getty Stock Photo)

The new law states that Britons must be able to show proof that they have at least €113.40 (£97) per person, per day, during their stay in the country.

It's fair to say that the news hasn't been received well, with many threatening not to go back to the holiday destination following the implemented law.

Chelsea, an expert from cheapholidayexpert.com has explained all the ins and outs of the law, such as what we can do to prepare, how serious it is, and what to do if we don't have the required funds.

How new is this rule?

Well, it turns out that this rule is not new at all, as it has been in effect since 1 January 2022, though back then it was at £85 a day per person, being increased to £93 per day in 2023.

So, there's no reason to be scared, it has been quite standard and in place for a while, though it is under a spotlight now that we're past the COVID years.

Should we blame Brexit?

In short, yes.

As the UK left the EU , Brits don't have the freedom of moving throughout the continent anymore, and have to go through closer, more thorough checks.

This can be anything, such as:

  • Showing you have enough money for your stay
  • Showing proof of accommodation for your stay
  • Showing a return or onward ticket

But this could happen in any EU country, not just being limited to Spain - and with that being said, these rules aren't exclusive to the UK either, instead applying to all third party countries as a standard rule.

It's important that you're ready to show proof of funds upon arrival. (Getty Stock Photo)

How will it affect my holiday?

The Spanish ministry states that: "Foreigners must prove, if required to do so," about proof of funds, meaning that it isn't compulsory for them to check every tourist's bank statement upon arrival.

Think of it as a random spot check, you may get picked, or you may not.

Has this actually happened to anyone?

Chelsea posted on her Instagram once the news broke, asking people who has travelled to Spain since the start of 2022 to share if they were asked about money.

Only four of the 1373 people asked said that they had, and provided stories about what had happened.

All of them went through the checks in 2022, and only one had to show proof of accommodation, a return flight, and just flashed their credit card to the officer, who seemed unbothered to see a bank statement or account balance.

The others got away with flashing their credit cards, with no real thorough checks taking place according to them.

But with that being said, they may begin to stop more people as the number of tourists into the country increases.

How should I prepare?

No matter how slim the chance, it's key to have the following at hand:

  • Confirmation of your return flight or onwards travel
  • Confirmation of your booked accommodation and the address of where you’re staying

Screenshots will do, though PDFs and official confirmations will probably look better.

Brits will have to prepare for spot checks when entering EU countries from now on. (Getty Stock Photo)

How do I prepare to prove that I have enough money?

First and foremost, you have to work out if you have £97 per day, with people in families or groups having to do more maths to make this work.

Showing bank cards might be the key, so make sure they're easily accessible, though it sounds like officers are looking for verbal confirmation so far from tourists, according to Chelsea.

The Spanish Ministry of Interior also states you can prove it: "...in cash, or by presenting certified checks, traveler's checks, letters of payment, or credit cards, which must be accompanied by a bank account statement or an up-to-date bank book (letters from banks or Internet bank statements will not be accepted) or any other means with which the amount available as credit of said card or Bank account."

What if I don't have enough?

There are no known cases of this yet, but the official ruling from the Spanish government states: "In the event that, when carrying out the entry control of people in Spanish territory, it is verified that a foreigner lacks sufficient economic resources for the time he wishes to remain in Spain and to continue his trip to the country of destination or to return to the country of origin, or do not have the registered, non-transferrable and closed ticket or tickets, in the means of transport they intend to use, their entry into Spanish territory will be denied as established by regulation."

It does also state that in exceptional circumstances, you could still get let in, but the length of your stay may be reduced.

Bottom line: Come prepared!

This is how it's going to be from now on.

Live updates, the one shocking mistake that led to us tourist rene remund’s staggering $143k bill.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

A US tourist has revealed the moment he received a bill of six figures after a short holiday to Switzerland went horribly wrong.

Rene Remund and his wife Linda made the trip last September, a journey the pair had been on previously given it’s where he is originally from.

As always, Remund ensured his mobile phone provider was notified of his travels, by going in-store to share his overseas movements. He said that as a customer of 30 years, he was told he was “covered.”

Rene Remund got a pleasant surprise in the mail that turned out to be a massive bill from his European holiday.

But while enjoying the Swiss countryside and sharing some of the magical sights of his trip via photo messages to friends and family, not once did Remund think these texts could be racking up thousands and thousands in daily roaming costs.

After returning home and receiving his T-Mobile bill, Remund thought it was for $143 which he thought to be “reasonable.”

“I get this T-Mobile bill and it doesn’t bother me very much because I was reading $143,” he explained, adding it wasn’t until he went to pay the bill that he realized a few more zeros were involved.

Rene Remund's T-Mobile phone bill of 143,442.74 is shown.

“I look at the bill and I say, ‘Excuse me’,” he said.

“$143,000.00 … are you guys crazy?”

According to the mobile phone bill, Remund racked up 9.5 GB of data while in Europe, costing him thousands of dollars each day.

Never miss a story.

And while 5-10GB isn’t considered a large amount of data, not being covered by roaming fees will cause a user to run up thousands of dollars very quickly.

“I called [T-Mobile] and the girl put me on hold for a while,” he explained.

“She said let me check this out and I’ll get back to you. She gets back and says, yeah this is a good bill.

Rene Remund could not beleive the massive bill amount, telling T-Mobile they were "crazy."

“I said, ‘What do you mean it’s a good bill?’ And she says ‘Well, this is what you owe.'”

“I said ‘You’re kidding me … you’re crazy.'”

Following confirmation his bill was to the value of around $143,000.00 — Remund hired a lawyer to argue the fact he was “covered” for international roaming to avoid such “exorbitant” charges.

T-Mobile said Rene Remund racked up 9.5 GB of data while in Europe, costing him thousands of dollars each day.

His lawyer issued a letter to the president of T-Mobile, for which no reply was given until just a few days ago.

The letter from T-Mobile allegedly said that the service provider was “sorry” for the charges and that Remund would receive a “credit” to eliminate the entire phone bill.

In an email issued to local media Scripps News Tampa, T-Mobile said that customers should always “check the travel features of their plan, such as international data roaming, before departing.”

“If a customer is on an older plan that doesn’t include international roaming for data and calling, they’ll need to make sure they’re using aeroplane mode and wi-fi when using data to be certain the device doesn’t connect to an international network.”

Last year, Melbourne activist and author Sally Rugg was slapped with a little over $720.00 fee two minutes after she touched down in London.

Melbourne is a vibrant, diverse city, and each suburb has a distinct vibe of its own.
