There are tons of fun things to do in the Great Lakes Bay Region! 

Check out incredible art and history museums (the Castle Museum and  Marshall M. Frederick's Sculpture Museum are incredible!), Children's Zoo, Shiawassee wildlife refuge and drive, Japanese Tea House (Enjoy a traditional tea ceremony!) and our favorite restaurants.

Do You Love Wildlife Drives and Hiking? Visit the Incredible Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge

Location:  6975 Mower Rd, Saginaw, MI 

Saginaw Michigan is home to the incredible Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge which is absolutely one of my favorite places to visit in this area.  It's a safe place to go for a long nature walk with free parking.

We highly recommend the Ferguson Bayou Trail and Wildlife Drive for incredible bird watching and photographic opportunities. If you only have time for one, the Wildlife Drive is shockingly good with tons of wildlife, especially in June and July.

The Great Lakes Bay region is filled with great arts and culture!  Let's check out the Saginaw Art Museum, Castle Museum, Marshall M. Frederick's Sculpture Museum, and Mid-Michigan Children's Museum!

Saginaw Art Museum: Enjoy Paintings, Sculptures, Ceramics and more!

Saginaw Art Museum address:  1126 N Michigan Ave, Saginaw, MI

This incredible art museum is home to exhibitions, a permanent collection and ongoing events . You will get inspired as you visit each room throughout this spacious museum. 

The Saginaw Art Museum’s Permanent Collection consists of paintings, sculpture and watercolors created by artists from the 18th through 21st centuries. 

We enjoyed seeing several photographs, ceramics and works on paper.  There's also examples of British, French and American Realism artwork. 

Be sure to visit the beautiful Charles A. Platt gardens which is included with the price of admission. 

Castle Museum is a Treasure Trove of Saginaw's Past

Castle Museum address:  500 Federal Ave, Saginaw, MI

Since 1979, the Castle Museum has been preserved by the Historical Society of Saginaw County.  It's another Great Lakes Bay Region treasure!

Must Sees: 

• The Huckster Wagon  -  Imagine having your fresh produce and other merchandise delivered to your home in these horse-drawn wagons during the early 20th century.  The huckster tradition was very strong in Saginaw before the automobile and the rise of supermarkets.  The word "huckster" comes from a Dutch word meaning "peddler." 
• Period Rooms:  See how home decor looked from the 1950s to the Victorian era parlor

• The Saginaw Carriage Works  (and J.P. Beck) was one of the many carriage and wagon manufacturers in Saginaw in the late 1890's.  Imagine how he felt seeing his business destroyed by the invention of the automobile! But J.P. Beck didn't give up, he started selling automobiles!  
• 1914 Saginaw Cyclecar
• Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame!
• Statue of Lady Justice

• Learn About Lumbering:  Did you know Saginaw was once known as the Lumber Capital of the World?
• Saginaw Metal Casting Plants  - Discover the history!
• Myer Brothers Jewelry Store:  Formerly located on Jefferson Ave. After the business closed in 1974, the cabinets and artifacts were donated to the museum in 1979.

Marshall M. Frederick's Sculpture Museum

Marshall M. Frederick's Sculpture Museum address:  7400 Bay Rd, University Center, MI

There is so much to see at this incredible Michigan museum - you will be blown away!   Without a doubt, the Marshall M. Frederick's Sculpture Museum is on my list of incredible places to visit in Michigan!

Marshall Frederick was a sculpture that had a studio in Royal Oak, Michigan.  When he passed away in 1998 his work, studio, molds, machinery were donated and are on display at the museum. 

Admission is FREE!  There are also free guided tours. 

• Main Exhibit Gallery - I was so excited to see all the p laster molds used to cast Marshall Frederick's work in bronze.  Includes famous casts such as the Spirit of Detroit!
• Sculpture Garden - WOW!  What an incredible hidden gem right here in the Great Lakes Bay Region!  I loved seeing the  beautiful bronze sculptures, botanical garden beds, the striking Day and Night Fountain and the Otter Pool.
• Sculptor’s Studio  After passing away, Mr. Frederick's clay models, armatures, molds, sculptures, machinery, tools, equipment and so much more from his home and studio were donated to Saginaw Valley State University.  I absolutely loved this exhibit which is a representation of his studio in Royal Oak, MI.

Mid-Michigan Children's Museum

Mid-Michigan Children's Museum address:  315 W Genesee Ave, Saginaw, MI

The museum features over 16,000 square feet of gallery space for kids from birth to 10 years old to learn, discover and explore!

Check out a sugar farm, see how a car works, explore water features and learn about tactile objects. 

Japanese Cultural Center, Tea House and Gardens

Japanese Cultural Center and Tea House address: 527 Ezra Rust Dr, Saginaw, MI

I'm so excited to have such a lovely cultural gem located in Saginaw Michigan!  We absolutely loved the experience of a tea ceremony and wandering the peaceful gardens. 

Be sure to wander their scenic paved trails, enjoy the blooming cherry trees (around June) and just relax near the lovely waterfalls.  There are lots of picturesque spots for photography, such as the iconic red bridges, sparkling pond and tea house.

Enjoy a Show or Movie at the Historic Temple Theatre

Temple Theatre address:  201 N Washington Ave, Saginaw, MI 

Did you know the Temple Theatre first opened its doors for their first production on July 28, 1927?  This theatre is a fantastic venue for the performing arts, music, dance, live events, and cinema.

The theatre was completely renovated in 2002 so the stunning 1,750-seat theatre features the incredible detail of the original Neo-Classic design.

Love Movies? The Saginaw Silver Screen is also a fun way to get out and watch an older movie such as the beloved Princess Bride, the Godfather and Back to the Future for a very affordable price (around $5 per person). Check their website for prices and show times!

Saginaw Children's Zoo: Incredible Zoo in Michigan!

Saginaw Children's Zoo Address:  1730 S Washington Ave #2876, Saginaw, MI

Penguins.   There, I said it .  I wanted to get that out there that one of the cutest critters on the planet is at the Saginaw Children's Zoo!  Oh, and did you see the video above?  If you love zoos, this Michigan zoo will have you grinning from ear to ear ( or whisker to whisker! )

The views, walking paths, shady benches and thoughtful landscaping are incredible at the Saginaw Children's Zoo in Michigan!

What animals are at the Saginaw Zoo? Well, you can see alligators, prairie dogs (squeal!), fish, kangaroos, turtles and so much more!  You can also see alpaca, pygmy goats, black-tailed prairie dog, miniature donkey, miniature horse, cotton-top tamarin!

Is the Saginaw Children's Zoo open? This incredible Michigan Zoo opens mid-April, but check their website for info on hours, events and exhibits!

This Saginaw zoo is one of our favorite zoos in Michigan!

Are you searching for the best places to stay while visiting Saginaw Michigan?

This option rocks if you are having an extended stay as the bedroom door is another buffer to hall noise.  

Four Points by Sheridan Saginaw - This lovely Saginaw Hotel has a great workout room, outdoor hang out spaces and comfortable bar so you can relax and get a drink at the end of your day. 

There are also suites available to give you more space while lounging and additional quiet space when sleeping.

If you love visiting Michigan greenhouses and garden centers , you need to check out Abele's!  So many choices! I purchased a stunning "Proven Winner" brand hot pink hydrangea as they grow phenomenally well in our region. 

They have pond designs and supplies, annuals, perennials, trees, garden supplies and tons of vegetables to plant!

Here are three more greenhouses and garden centers in Bay City that we love.  They are located close to each other so I went to all of them in one morning!  Flower extravaganza!

Domestic violence and police shootings: A rising trend in the Saginaw Bay area

SAGINAW, MI — Over the Memorial Day weekend, an Illinois man allegedly arrived at a Saginaw house, shot a woman he once dated, then drove her from the scene. He didn’t make it far before he encountered police, at which point he allegedly commenced shooting his victim again.

The woman, Kenya M. Collins, died of her wounds. Her shooting is the latest in a trend over the last year of alleged domestic abusers opening fire when police respond. In three of four incidents to happen locally in the last 10 months, the assailants died from police gunfire.

Also in recent years, several of Saginaw County’s homicides were of women allegedly killed by their husbands or boyfriends.

In March 2021, Earl L. Mack fatally shot his wife, Avele L. “April” Mack in their Saginaw home. A jury three years later found Mack guilty of first-degree murder and he’s since been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Another uxoricide—the term for when a husband kills his wife—occurred in May 2021, when Aaron C. Pittman killed his wife, La’Resha C. Isom-Pittman in their Saginaw Township apartment. Before Pittman could be arrested, he leaped to his death from the Zilwaukee Bridge.

Two other husband-widowers are jailed and awaiting trial on charges they killed their wives. Deandre R. Welch is charged with open murder in the April 2022 death of his wife, Margaret Welch, who was shot at a friend’s Buena Vista Township home. More recently, Bryant A. Brown was charged with open murder in the March 28 fatal shooting of his estranged wife, Chasity Jackson.

Alleged abusers’ spiking levels of violence has been noted locally.

“The calls we’re getting are more severe,” said Christi Birchmeier, president and executive director of Saginaw’s Underground Railroad. “It’s escalated over the last couple of years.”

Birchmeier said the trend began during the COVID-19 pandemic and, coincidentally, the Edenville Dam failure in May 2020. It has not gone down since, she added.

“People were stuck at home, then the dam broke, and it took everything to a higher level,” she said.

Birchmeier pointed out each case is unique and there is no easy answer as to what’s causing the trend.

The first of the four recent confrontations between police and alleged domestic abusers occurred about 11:40 p.m. on July 17, when an MSP Fugitive Team and Emergency Services Team located parolee Tony R. Roy III driving north on Telegraph Road north of Seven Mile Road in Detroit.

Roy, 44, had allegedly killed and dismembered his wife, Saginaw resident Shauna L. Roy, a few days prior, police having found her remains in a Burton apartment the evening of July 15.

Roy stopped for police, then drew a gun and pointed it at himself and a female passenger. When he directed the gun toward the woman, troopers fired.

Emergency responders pronounced Roy deceased at the scene. The female passenger suffered minor injuries from glass fragments but did not require hospitalization.

The second incident occurred Aug. 8 within Saginaw Bay Estates mobile home park in Bay County’s Hampton Township. Darryl J. Socia , 46, allegedly broke into the home of woman he had a child with and stabbed her in her left thigh.

The woman escaped and ran to a neighbor’s house, where police were called. As two MSP troopers and one officer each from the Hampton Township Public Safety Department, Essexville Public Safety Department, and Bay County Sheriff’s Office approached, Socia opened fire on them with a revolver from the trailer he was in.

The officers took cover within the trailer containing the wounded woman and other civilians. While they were pinned down, Socia continued firing from a barricaded position inside the other trailer.

The MSP Emergency Services Team, multiple BearCat armored rescue vehicles, a helicopter and K-9 teams responded to the scene. EST personnel backed up a BearCat to the front door of the trailer the officers and civilians were pinned down in and removed them.

Police set up a perimeter around Socia and repeatedly called out to him to surrender.

Over the next couple of hours, EST personnel made several more attempts to communicate with Socia, who kept firing his gun.

Socia eventually stepped out of the trailer and walked down a wheelchair ramp, holding a revolver to his head and yelling. He then pointed the gun at a BearCat, prompting two EST members to fire five shots at him from their rifles. Four of their shots struck him, delivering fatal wounds, according to the report.

In the third incident, police responded to 2020 Fairfax St. in on Aug. 12 after 58-year-old resident Thomas C. Baskin Sr . allegedly assaulted a woman he was in a dating relationship with. The woman fled the residence and called for help.

The woman gave responding police permission to enter the house. Two officers knocked on a door that had previously been knocked off its hinges during an earlier police raid. They repeatedly told Baskin to open the door or they would kick it down, but he refused.

Officers attempted to kick the door down three times but were unsuccessful. They tried another door and managed to gain entry. As they did so, Baskin yelled expletives at them and fired a gun.

Police fired two shots in response and retreated behind a patrol vehicle. More Saginaw officers and MSP troopers responded, erected a perimeter around the scene, and armed themselves with rifles.

A short time later, another man inside the house called 911 and said he wanted to surrender. He stepped outside and was taken into custody, telling police Baskin was the one who fired at them.

Police could see Baskin moving inside the house and made repeated commands for him to surrender. Baskin eventually stepped onto the porch with a pistol in his hand and resumed firing at police. MSP troopers returned fire, fatally injuring Baskin.

Prosecutors ruled officers were justified in the Roy, Socia, and Baskin fatalities.

The most recent incident occurred May 26 when Kenya Collins, 50, was allegedly shot by 63-year-old Willie V. Allen during a gathering at a house in the 1000 block of Cathay Street in Saginaw. Allen allegedly fled with the wounded Collins in a dark SUV.

When police encountered Allen and Collins near the intersection of Holland Avenue and Outer Drive in Buena Vista Township, the suspect rammed a Michigan State Police patrol vehicle and then shot Collins again, police have said.

A trooper fired at least one round and has since been placed on paid administrative leave. Allen was uninjured and is jailed on a charge of open murder and nine other offenses.

Although it didn’t involve domestic violence, another recent gunfight between police and a wanted man also ended with the suspect’s death.

This incident transpired the afternoon of Dec. 13 as the U.S. Marshal Service Detroit Fugitive Apprehension Team and the MSP Third District Fugitive Team were surveilling a motel on Dixie Highway Bridgeport. They were hoping to arrest 51-year-old Deon W. Watson on warrants out of Saginaw and Wayne counties, charging him with a combined 14 offenses, all involving guns.

Police saw Watson enter a nearby party store. When he came back out, troopers announced themselves and told him to show his hands, only for Watson to briefly crouch, then run south with his right hand in his pocket. Watson tossed several items from his pockets as troopers and marshals ran after him.

Watson eventually turned west and jumped a fence into a vacant lot. He then drew a semiautomatic pistol and opened fire on pursuing officers. Several officers returned fire, striking Watson who collapsed with mortal wounds.

Trooper Brent Haag then indicated he had been shot. He was taken to Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw and underwent emergency surgery for two bullet wounds.

Officials pronounced Watson deceased at the scene. Investigators recovered the pistol and additional ammunition cartridges. On backtracking his path, police also found a .380 revolver he had apparently discarded in his flight.

A later analysis of Watson’s cellphone revealed dozens of photos of guns matching those seized at the scene.

Prosecutors ruled police were justified in shooting Watson. Trooper Haag has since returned to active duty.

Police encourage those experiencing domestic violence to make use of available resources for help. Abuse victims may call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or text 88788.

In Saginaw County, the Underground Railroad is available for victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault, stalking, and slavery. Its 24/7crisis line is available at 989-755-0411 or via text at 989-770-8892. Throughout 2023, the agency provided housing assistance to 113 families and handled 2,997 crisis calls.

The agency also helps victims in the process of obtaining personal protection orders, or PPOs, from the courts, said President Birchmeier. While PPOs aren’t magic shields, they do add a layer of protection, she said.

As of February, Michigan abuse victims may also seek an extreme risk protection order, or ERPO . When granted, an ERPO prohibits individuals at risk of harming themselves or others from possessing or buying guns.

For abuse victims in Bay County, the Bay Area Women’s Shelter provides free crisis intervention, advocacy, and a haven. Its crisis line is available at 1-800-834-2098. In 2023, the agency provided 9,765 nights of shelter to 126 adults and 181 children, while answering 805 calls and providing 205 hours of crisis counseling and intervention.

Wilderness Trails Animal Park - Birch Run (Off I-75)

There’s a giant giraffe out front that folks like to stop and take photos with. The Wilderness Trail Zoo is great, too. Wilderness Trails Zoo opened in 1991. The trails take visitors through 56 acres of natural surroundings to see exotic animals such as primates, zebras, lions, reptiles, and parrots.

Castle Museum: Postal Inspector Peep Holes - Saginaw (Off I-75/675)

The Castle Museum of Saginaw County History is run by the Historical Society of Saginaw County. Constructed as a post office and dedicated on July 3, 1898, the French Renaissance Revival architecture of the building was an unusual - if not unique - choice for a post office. The building’s architect, William Martin Aiken, claimed that his design was inspired by the early French settlement of the Saginaw Valley.

In 1970, a new federal office building was dedicated and the building was again threatened with demolition. Once more, the community advocated for the preservation of the building and it was transferred to the County of Saginaw to become the home of the Castle Museum of Saginaw County History.

Stevie Wonder Rock - Saginaw (Off I-75)

Motown legend Stevie Wonder has a rock with a plaque on it honoring him in his hometown of Saginaw. It sits about three miles from the hospital he was born. 1314 N. 5th Ave., Saginaw, MI.

It’s essentially a shrine to dead animals native to the area.

Deadman’s Hill Scenic Overlook - Elmira (Highway 131)

A beautiful vista and something of a memorial to a young logger named Stanley Graczyk. On May 20, 1910, Stan was to marry his childhood sweetheart, and on that morning he was working the steep ridges of the Jordan River Valley with his crew. Poor Stanley never made it to the altar. He was driving a team of horses and a “big wheel” loaded with timber down the ridge, when the huge cart slipped out of control and ran over him, killing him instantly.

It’s been called Dead Man’s Hill ever since. Today it’s a scenic spot with views of much of the Jordan River Watershed. Also over 18 miles of hiking trails.

Bonus: Pere Cheney Cemetery: All that’s left of a Michigan town wiped out by disease and fire is a beautiful cemetery, tucked in the woods near Beaver Creek Township. Here’s the story of the ghost town . I stopped here last summer and it was a road trip highlight.

News 10 previously reported that Rite Aid has struggled financially for years, facing lawsuits over the opioid epidemic.

For the Rite Aid location on West Mount Hope Avenue in Lansing, folks in the area say they’re sad to see it go for a number of reasons. Most importantly, it is convenient and has personal connections.

“I got to know all the workers here. They’re really nice people. It’s just so sad that all the (Michigan) Rite Aid’s have to close,” said Pricilla Button, a neighbor of the location.

“I’m just hoping that the workers here are able to find new places to work at, instead of just being left to hang out and dry,” said Trey Snead, who also lives nearby.

The sign posted on the front door says, “Due to the closing of all the Rite Aid stores in Michigan, we will no longer be taking cans/bottles back. We do apologize for the inconvenience.”

This is a shock to those who live nearby and a disappointment, as it’s not the first business in the area to close in recent years.

“Kinda sad because the grocery store closed too, and there’s a lot of senior citizens around here. A lot of people around here, they walk and come here,” said Jose Tross, another neighbor of the location.

On October 15th, 2023, Rite Aid announced that it filed for bankruptcy as part of its effort to restructure its finances.

Frequent customers say they’ve begun transferring prescriptions, saddened to see another accessible option leave.

“Everything in this area here, especially over here, is all spread out. Meijers is on one side, and Walgreens is way down there, and the other Walgreens is on Saginaw,” said Tross.

“They’ve already closed CVS,” said Button, “I just feel sad for all the employees. One of the employees has been here for 21 years. Yeah. It’s kinda sad.”

Rite Aid is not alone in these closures. News 10 reported last fall that CVS says it’s closing 300 stores per year. Walgreens also said in October that it will close 150 stores by this summer.
