15 Best Things to Do in Tijuana (Mexico)

A border city with a rakish reputation, Tijuana is almost a byword for earthy pleasures.

And while tequila, margaritas and sleaze are still front and centre, Tijuana’s character has changed a little since American traffic slowed because of Mexico’s cartel war.

Yes, there are grubby parts, especially if you venture into the Zona Norte.

But you can have an edifying time checking out the little arty plazas and passages that have popped up in Zona Centro, and bar-hopping at the more sophisticated Caliente and Calle Brasil.

For fun in the sun, the Pacific coast has surf breaks all down the shore, while Rosarito is minutes south of Tijuana if you just want to laze on the sand.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Tijuana :

1. Tijuana Cultural Center (CECUT)

Tijuana Cultural Center

East of Tijuana’s downtown is the more affluent Zona Río by the Tijuana River.

Just next to the Plaza Río pedestrian mall is the Cultural Center, which opened in 1982. Designed by the eminent renowned architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, the centre has become a symbol for Tijuana.

The building that stands out the most is “La Bola”, the spherical structure housing Tijuana’s only IMAX cinema, premiering four high-resolution movies each year.

The centre also has a well-curated exhibition about California, which we’ll talk about next, a botanic garden, aquarium, cafe and a spacious esplanade.

One of the newer facilities is “El Cubo”, which opened in 2008 and stages international art exhibitions.

2. Museo de las Californias

Museo de las Californias

The central building at the Tijuana Cultural Center houses a permanent exhibition to give you a real sense of place in California.

Stop here for a few minutes of reflection before scooting off for Tijuana’s more lurid pleasures.

The museum charts the human and natural history of the California peninsula.

On a helical ramp, you’ll begin in prehistoric times and work your way to the middle of the 20th century via the Jesuits, War of Independence and Revolution.

There are reproductions of the rock paintings found in the Sierra de San Francisco, dioramas of the Cochimí and Yuman native groups as well as examples of folk art, artefacts from the old Desert Line railroad, models of pre-Hispanic settlements, examples of New Spanish metalwork and a detailed large scale model of a Spanish carrack.

3. Avenida Revolución

Avenida Revolución

Most visitors with limited time make Avenida Revolución in Zona Centro their first port of call.

Like many downtowns in the United States, Avenida Revolución is a little grimy, but is home to some real icons like Caesar’s which we’ll talk about below in “Local Food”. For roughly eight blocks there’s nothing but restaurants, souvenir shops and bars.

At the upper end is Plaza Santa Cecilia, near the Tijuana Arch and where there are roving “conjuntos norteños” musicians, dozens of outdoor stalls selling clothes and arts and crafts, and no lack of street food stands either if you’re in the mood for a huarache, tostada or quesadilla.

4. El Trompo

El Trompo

If you happen to be in Tijuana with younger members of the family this interactive science and technology museum will ensure a couple of hours of educational fun.

In six different halls (salas) kids can take part in wacky experiments, test their reasoning and creativity and find out about scientific concepts like electricity, weather, the human body, biodiversity and solids, liquids and gases.

A member of staff will be on hand at all times to explain each exhibit.

For even younger visitors (under six), there’s the Sala Experimenta, filled with stations that require problem solving and a little physical exertion, whether they’re building their own house, meeting farm animals or taking the helm of their own boat.

El Popo, Tijuana

There may be bigger markets in Tijuana, but El Popo is along the main tourist drag on Calle Benito Juárez (Segunda), and is somewhere to get an instant, chaotic blast of Mexican culture.

Some of the things stacked up at the permanent stalls are cured meat, sun-dried chillies, big pots filled with seeds, huge wheels of queso guerrero, fresh fruit and vegetables, preserves, cookware, candles and jewellery.

There’s freshly cooked food if you’re up for something like a taco al pastor (with kebab meat).

6. Nightlife

Tijuana Night

Generations of Americans have crossed the border to cut loose for a night or two.

Tijuana still conjures thoughts of margaritas, tequila and, yes, some of the seamier aspects of any border city.

Zona Centro and specifically Avenida Revolución are still the places most visitors go to blow off steam, whether that’s a bar, nightclub (smaller ones have no cover charge) or strip club.

If you’re just out for some nightclubbing, try to avoid ending up in Zona Norte, one of North America’s largest red light zones.

Slightly removed from the downtown, Plaza del Zapato in the more upscale Zona Río area has purpose-built nightclubs in warehouse-like buildings, while Calle Basil up the hill to the east is all about trendy cafes and bars.

7. Pasaje Rodríguez

Pasaje Rodríguez

Part of the regeneration of the Zona Centro, the Pasaje Rodríguez is a former covered shopping passage that has been taken over by young artists.

They have painted murals on the walls and metal shutters, opened stylish cafes and set up little galleries where they can show off and sell their work.

Also on the passage are bookshops, bars for live music and fashion boutiques.

Pasaje Rodríguez is intended as a collaborative environment and is the hub for cultural events like the annual art walk.

8. Playas de Tijuana

Playas de Tijuana

Tijuana’s westernmost borough is a residential area ending at the ocean.

So you could head out here if you want a taste of the Pacific on Mexican soil without making the trip down to better known beach resorts like Ensenada and Rosarito.

As the name suggests, Playas de Tijuana has beaches; in fact, it’s one long beach that continues south from the border fence for around four kilometres to Puente la Joya.

The sand is kept clean, the gradient is light and the waves roll in around waist height.

On weekends there will be families wandering along the Malecón (raised promenade) behind, and grab some seafood specialities like octopus with rice, ceviche, fish tacos and camarones cucaracha (shrimp with a spicy tomato and lemon sauce).

9. Bullfighting

bull

By no means everyone’s idea of fun, bullfighting is just one of those things that comes to mind when people think of Tijuana.

In truth the activity may be in decline and for good reason. Here’s why we think you should not got to a bullfighting event: Bullfighting: An Atrocity, Not a Sport

10. Plaza Río Tijuana

This sizeable pedestrian is in Zona Río by the Cultural Center.

Plaza Río Tijuana is one of the largest shopping centres in the state of Baja California, covering more than 73,500 square metres.

It was the first American-style mall in Tijuana when it opened in 1981 and offers more than 100 branches of well-known Mexican and American brands, as well as two cinema complexes and a Soriana hypermarket.

If you need a quick bite, Plaza Río has a couple of the major American restaurant chains to go with its Mexican, Italian and Chinese eateries.

11. Rosarito Beach

Rosarito Beach

The beaches at Playas de Tijuana are passable, but Rosarito Beach, around 20 kilometres away, is the first real coastal resort after the border.

In the Golden Age of Hollywood Dolores del Río, Orson Welles, Rita Hayworth, Katharine Hepburn, Ava Gardner and Spencer Tracey all got away to Rosarito.

The beach is a generous strip of white sand, too broad to ever feel overcrowded, and seemingly endless when the tide goes out.

The sand pitches softly into the Pacific, forming a wide band of ankle-deep water.

On the drag is the landmark Rosarito Beach Hotel from 1925, and apartment blocks, restaurants and a couple of nightspots.

Tons of activities are available from private tour companies or the waters sports centres on the beach.

There’s surfing of course, but also kitesurfing, paddleboarding, fishing and RIB trips to the Coronado Islands around 15 kilometres off Rosarito.

12. Ensenada

wine tours

The coast north and south of Ensenada is lined with supreme beaches, many of which have awesome surf breaks (3 M’s, Stacks and California Trailer Park). If you’re out for nothing but relaxation there’s a straight choice between private beaches at resorts like Estero Beach where you can pay for a day pass to use the facilities, or free public options like El Punto and San Miguel (also favoured by surfers). Ensenada could also be a springboard for wine tours in the Valle de Guadalupe.

The wine tourism industry here is long-established and you can travel to the wineries on a bus tour.

If you come to Ensenada in August you won’t need to leave the town as it hosts the Grape Harvest Fiesta, when the region’s wineries set up tasting stalls and pop-up restaurants.

13. Puerto Nuevo

Puerto Nuevo

Not far south of Rosarito is the small coastal settlement of Puerto Nuevo, which since the 1950s has had a big reputation for its lobster.

Some 100,000 of these crustaceans are eaten at Puerto Nuevo’s restaurants each year, and they’re such a part of the local identity that a lobster festival takes place every October.

The dish to try is the lobster taco with refried beans and a flour tortilla.

Pair it with a wine from the Valle de Guadalupe for a real Baja Californian dining experience.

Puerto Nuevo also brings in surfers who come to ride a challenging beach break just north of the town.

14. Casa de la Cultura

Casa de la Cultura

For culture in a less touristy and more intimate setting, the Casa de la Cultura is a cultural centre in one of Tijuana’s oldest and most handsome buildings.

Designed by the early-20th century Guerrero Preciado with Ionic columns on its facade, the venue started out as a school and briefly had a military role as a “centro de organización” in the Second World War.

The building took on its present role in 1977 and has a theatre and exhibition space for painting, sculpture and arts and crafts shows.

15. Local Food

Caesar salad

You may or may not know that Tijuana is the birthplace of the Caesar salad, invented in 1924 at Hotel Caesar on Avenida Revolución by the Italian immigrant restaurateur Cesare Cardini.

He was based in San Diego, but set up across the border during prohibition.

Ingredients for this world-famous dish are Romaine lettuce, grated parmesan, croutons, egg and Worcestershire sauce, and you can order it to be prepared next to your table at Caesar’s almost 100 years later.

We’ve mentioned lobster tacos, which are big all along Baja California.

But Tijuana also has its own signature taco (taco Tijuana), with meat, avocado and hot chilli sauce in an unusual cone-shaped maize tortilla.

Visit the Moscow Kremlin

Visit Kremlin is on top of things to do in Moscow. A place of power for centuries, the Kremlin then shows us a whole different image when viewed from the inside. If you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, the Kremlin is certainly one of the must-see places in Moscow.

  • Opening hours : Daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Thursday.
  • See our blog post about visiting the Moscow Kremlin

Moscow Kremlin: skip-the-line tickets and 8 things not to miss

Visit the Cathedral of Christ the Savior

This impressive Moscow Cathedral is the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is a must see if you visit Moscow in 2 days and clearly one of the things to do in Moscow. The Cathedral of Christ the Savior was first built in 1883 in memory of Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s Grand Army. Then in 1931 Stalin ordered its destruction. It was then rebuilt again (identically) only in 2000.

  • Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 15. At the foot of the Kropotkinskaya metro station.
  • Opening hours . Daily: 10: 00-17: 00, except Monday: 13: 00-17: 00
  • Free entry (some closing restrictions, for example a short)

Good to know! In orthodox religious places, one must avoid excessively uncovered clothing. Women should cover their heads. After visiting the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you can explore Bolotny Island and Gorky Park. This is one of the routes our guide to Moscow.

Cathedral of Christ the Savior

The old Krasny Oktyabr factory: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow

If you cross the Moskva River by a pedestrian bridge which is located just in front of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you will enjoy a beautiful view of the city and at the same time you can discover Balchug Island. Furthermore, if you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, you can include this island in your itinerary between the cathedral and Gorky park. Here is the old confectionery factory Krasny Oktyabr, which has gradually turned into a fashionable micro-district. There are then some elements of street art, cafes and restaurants and some Moscow bohemian side. At the end of the island you can see a gigantic 98-meter-high monument dedicated to the Russian reforming tsar Pierre The Great.

Good to know! You can find on this island are the trendiest nightclubs in Moscow. On weekends, there are taxi caps after midnight so there are so many people. On the other hand, if you go there in winter and during the day, the island is quite empty and less interesting to see.

Gorky Park is one of the TOP places to visit in Moscow, because it allows you to better understand the life of the locals and their rhythm. In fact, it’s a huge entertainment park. For example, in winter there is a giant ice rink and in summer – free dance or yoga lessons, sandy beaches for playing volleyball, an outdoor cinema. So, like the locals, have a Stakantchik (ice cream or cooked corn), and enjoy the atmosphere of the place: that’s one of the interesting things to do in Moscow to discover the city.

  • Where? Krymsky Val 9. 20 minutes’ walk from Krasny Oktyabr, along the quays.

Sparrow Hill and Moscow State University

The Sparrow Hill, Vorobiovy Gori in Russian, is the highest point in Moscow. It is rather known to Russians, but less to travelers. A nice view on Moscow opens from the hill, and in particular on the Luzhniki Stadium. In addition, on the hill itself is the Moscow State University: an impressive skyscraper from the Soviet era.

  • How to get there? By bus T7 (35 min) from Oktyaborskaya station, near Gorki Park. By metro (Vorobiovy Gorki station) + climb the hill on foot. On foot along the Moskva along the Gorky Park (1h30) + climb in funiculars.

Good to know! It is possible to cross the Moskva river by funicular. We actually tested it and it was pretty cool! That is one of our favorite things to do in Moscow!

What to do in Moscow

What to do in Moscow in 3 days?

If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days, it would be interesting to dive into the Soviet era which strongly marked the country and the city. After the Bolshevik Revolution, the capital was transferred from Saint Petersburg to Moscow, in order to mark the change of power. Moscow then became the world showcase for communist ideology. Here are the best things to do in Moscow for 3-day-trip!

VDNKh, visit Moscow of the Soviet era

VDNKh is a large exhibition center in the north of Moscow, where there are still several striking witnesses of the USSR. The most interesting are the Museum of Cosmonauts and the Statue of the Worker and the Kolkhozian , which will certainly impress you with its size!

Visit

GULAG History Museum

The explanations of the museum are very well done. We really have the feeling of going back in time. If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days and you are interested in history and this subject in particular, I recommend this museum. Visit the GULAG History Museum is one of the most interesting things to do in Moscow.

Discover the Patriarche Pounds district

It’s a nice neighborhood in Moscow where you can come across rather affluent locals, but not necessarily very bling-bling. Take a walk in this area is really a cool thing to do in Moscow! In addition, the Ponds of Patriarch is one of the places of Bulgakov’s novel “Master and Margarita”. As this is an interesting area to see, we have included it in a walking tour of Moscow. The route ends at the Moscow Kremlin, which is very convenient, because you will be able to visit Moscow in 3 days by optimizing your trips.

What to visit in Moscow in 4 days: TOP things to do in Moscow in 4 days

If you want to visit Moscow in 3 days, you will already see a lot of things. On the other hand, if you stay one more day, you have plenty to do! The Novodevichy Convent, the Tchistie Proudy district and the Izmaylovo Kremlin are very good candidates for you, if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days.

Visiting Novodevichy Convent in Moscow

The Novodevichy Convent is one of the most brilliant examples of Russian architecture, according to UNESCO. This beautiful complex was built in 1524 and today consists of the convent, but also of a cemetery whose status could be compared to that of Père-Lachaise in Paris. Visiting Novodevichy Convent is one of the great things to do in Moscow, if you want to go a little bit outside of the center!

What to see in Moscow in one day

Discovering Tchistye Proudy district

It’s one of the most popular areas of Moscow, with many cafes, restaurants and bars nearby. It is therefore a place to discover if you want to visit Moscow in 4 days. It is just as pleasant for a stroll as for the discovery of local life. For example, in winter the pond turns into an ice rink.

Visiting the Izmaylovo Kremlin, one of the coolest things to do in Moscow!

The Izmaylovo Kremlin is more of a tourist than a historic place. On the other hand, it is a pretty impressive place to discover, especially on weekends. Inside the Kremlin, there is a flea market where you can find a little bit of everything, but mostly good souvenirs to bring from Moscow. For example, chapka, traditional Russian scarves or matryoshka (Russian dolls). Add the Kremlin and the Izmaïlovo market to your itinerary if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days, because it is a nice and very colorful place! Visiting the Izmailovo Kremlin is one of the things to do in Moscow, if you want to put colors in your Instagram account! 😉

Things to do Moscow blog

In 4 days, we will have the opportunity to see several Moscow: Classic Moscow, Moscow of old Russia, Soviet Moscow and a little bit of the new Moscow. So what to visit in Moscow on the 5th day of travel?

What to visit in Moscow in 5 days?

Art lovers will be delighted to discover the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, while others will prefer to stroll along Arbat Street, see the buildings of Moskva-City or visit Bunker 42.

Admiring Russian art at Tretyakov Gallery

Founded in 1856 by an industrialist and great lover of art, the gallery has grown over the decades, and then bequeathed to the state. Today the collection includes more than 140,000 pieces, 15,000 of which are paintings. Visiting the Tretyakov Gallery is one of the things to do in Moscow if you want to discover Russian art!

  • Where? Pereoulok Lavrouchinski 10. A 5-minute walk from Tretiakovskaya station
  • Opening hours. Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Closed on Mondays.
  • Entry tickets. 500 RUB.

Museum to see

Visiting the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts

The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts presents the treasures of ancient Egypt, the paintings of Rembrandt and Cézanne, a fine collection of Impressionism.

  • Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 12
  • Opening hours. Daily: 10: 00-20: 00, except Thursday: 11: 00-21: 00. Closed on Mondays. The boxes close an hour before closing.
  • Entry tickets. The prices vary according to the collections from 300 to 750 RUB.

Walking on Arbat Street

All Russians know Rue Arbat. So, walking on Arbat street is one of the things to do in Moscow. However, after the years, little by little it became very touristy. This is a pedestrian street only. There are souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes there, but it is no longer the most authentic neighborhood in the city.

Seeing the buildings of Moskva-City (Moscow City)

Moskva-City is Moscow’s business center, much like Paris’s Defense district. The skyscrapers of Moskva-City are among the tallest in Europe: 373 meters high! Very nice place to see at dusk.

Good to know! You can admire a nice view of Moscow City from the docks of Tarasa Shevchenko. It’s especially beautiful in the evening with all the lights on.

Bunker 42, one of the most unusual things to do in Moscow

Bunker 42 is a secret military complex which was to be used by the Soviets in the event of a nuclear attack: a space of 7000 m² 65 meters underground!

  • Where? 5 Kotelnitcheski Lane, 11.
  • Prices. 2200 RUB per person
  • Opening hours. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Restaurant inside. Original, but rather a tourist trap.

What to visit in Moscow in 6 days or more?

There are still so many places to see, because Moscow is a big megalopolis and there is always something exciting to do there. For example: the ancient Kolomenskoye village or the WINZAVOD contemporary art center .

If you are interested in history and want to see Russian cities on a rather “human scale”, it would certainly be interesting for you to discover the cities of the Golden Ring . For example, it is very easy to get to Sergey Posad from Moscow (less than 2 hours in train). Visiting the Golden Ring is one of the best things to do in Moscow if you are staying more than a 5-6 days.

There are still plenty of places to see in Moscow, however I did my best to list here the best things to do in Moscow, what to see in Moscow in one day, but also in 2, 3, 4 or 5 days in Moscow!

Dr. Vicente Jurlano, 2020 Outstanding Sillimanian Awardee for Applied Population Dynamics and Development, gave an online lecture titled, “The Philippine population situation: Are we hitting the right buttons?” last Sept. 22.

Delving into national and global population issues and ideal demographic scenarios, Dr. Jurlano said that the lecture title is a “very important one” as the country is “hitting a very big challenge” in terms of the situation of its population.

“There are challenges, but there are also very big opportunities […] we need to tackle this and see how we can move forward in making a better Philippines for everybody,” he said.

Dr. Jurlano said the lecture was “very close” to his heart, as the information he presented came from his work and experience in the field.

The awardee explained that much of the data he presented and the insights he shared were products of more than 40 years of direct and indirect involvement in population and development.

By the end, the participants were tasked to describe Philippine population policies and programs, present demographic data on the current Philippine population, and explain the thrusts and directions of the Philippines’ population in relation to the projected population scenario.

Hosted by the Dr. Mariano C. Lao Global Studies Center of Silliman University (SU), the lecture included students from SU and the University of the Philippines Diliman.

15+ Lively Things to Do in Llano, Texas

Located in the Highland Lakes region of the Hill Country, exploring the best things to do in Llano, TX, can include everything from seeking out local street art to spotting wild bald eagles–and quite a bit in between!

Sitting along the Llano River and home to what is often considered one of the most beautiful courthouses in Texas, Llano makes for a fantastic Hill Country retreat.

Here’s what to do in Llano, Texas–plus a few nearby places not to miss.

Fun Things to Do in Llano, Texas

Sample some of the best barbecue in texas..

Llano is, unsurprisingly, home to some truly fantastic barbecue–and in the case of Cooper’s Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que, it just may be the best in Texas! Just ask its many fans and long lines–in a near-impossible competition, Cooper’s tends to rank near the top.

However, its neighbor across the street, Inman’s Kitchen Bar-B-Q, should not be overlooked.

Known for their turkey sausage and boasting delicious details like homemade bread, their food is bound to please.

The best solution? Stay in Llano long enough for two gut-busting meals and enjoy both!

Stroll across the Roy B. Inks Bridge.

Sometimes called simply the Inks Bridge or even the Llano Bridge, this 1935 bridge spans the Llano River and is the only bridge in town!

You can easily walk across it, and it makes for excellent views of the river below.

Check out Llano’s historic Red Top Jail.

Dating to 1895, Llano’s Red Top Jail has–what else–a distinctive red roof, and a well-preserved interior (which only makes sense: it was a functioning jail until 1982).

With a little advance planning, visitors can tour the interior: call 325-247-5354 for information if you’d like to plan a visit.

Seek out Shakedown Street.

Part public art project and part local hangout, Shakedown Street is a collection of colorful murals and decor situated behind Charlie’s Furniture in Llano.

Located in the heart of town, it’s easy to access Shakedown Street, but you may miss it unless you’re specifically seeking it out!

As an art project that clearly delights in its own whimsy, it’s definitely not to be missed while visiting Llano.

Drive Highway 71 during bluebonnet season.

Highway 71 near Llano is home to some of the prettiest bluebonnet patches in Texas from roughly late March to mid-April each year.

If you’re lucky enough to be visiting during wildflower season, be sure to add this scenic drive to your list of fun things to do in Llano, TX!

Admire one of the most beautiful courthouses in Texas.

On any list of the most gorgeous Texas courthouses, you’re virtually guaranteed to find the Llano Courthouse listed.

Built in 1893, the courthouse and its distinctive clocktower are well worth checking out while visiting Llano, TX.

Pay a visit to the Llano Historical Museum.

Housed in the former Bruhl’s Drugstore (you can still see the original soda fountain inside when you visit), the Llano Historical Museum explores the history of Llano County.

The small museum is open from Wednesday to Saturday, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

While you’re there, don’t miss the Pioneer Garden out back!

Stop by the Dabbs Railroad Hotel.

Built in 1907, this hotel overlooking the Llano River is one of the last remaining railroad hotels of its kind.

Situated near the train station, in the early 20th century the Dabbs Railroad Hotel catered to visitors passing through Llano.

Though it features beautiful views and plenty of Texas history, the Dabbs Railroad Hotel is arguably best known for its two most (in)famous guests: Bonnie and Clyde.

As of spring 2021, the Dabbs Railroad Hotel is currently listed for sale–hopefully, a new owner will arrive to reopen its doors soon!

Seek out bald eagles.

Each winter, bald eagles call an area near Llano, Texas home–and lucky visitors can view them from afar.

Without a doubt, this is one of the most unique things to do in Llano.

November to March is generally the best time to spot the eagles, but their arrival date changes by the year: ask around if you’re visiting Llano in the fall to see if they’ve arrived yet!

Grab a drink at the Fuel Coffee House.

Housed in a historic grocery store mere steps from the main square, Fuel Coffee House doesn’t just serve up some of the best coffee in Llano–it also provides a busy and beautiful non-profit community space.

Live music is common here, as are community meals, and of course plenty of casual studying and hanging out.

Be sure to add the charming Fuel Coffee House to your list of things to see in Llano!

Follow the Llano Trail of Deer.

No, not live deer–statues!

Uniquely painted deer statues are scattered throughout town, and they make excellent photo spots in Llano.

Check out the LanTex Theater.

Dating to 1927, the LanTex Theater’s red-and-white marquee is bound to catch your eye when wandering the main square.

Showing first-run movies 3 times a week, and, once a month, the Llano County Opry, the theater is a delightful piece of both Llano’s past and present.

Stroll along the Llano River.

Running through the center of town, it’s impossible to miss the beautiful Llano River when visiting–and no trip to Llano is complete without a stroll alongside it!

Badu Park and Robinson City Park are both great places to visit and enjoy the river, but Badu Park is closer to the center of town.

Stop by Baby Head Cemetery for an interesting piece of local history.

This small cemetery dating to the 19th century lies a short drive outside of Llano, and it is the last remaining link to a town that no longer stands here: where was there was a town called Baby Head, now there is only this cemetery.

Head over to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area.

The fascinating and ever-popular Enchanted Rock lies only 25 minutes south of Llano!

If you’re planning a weekend getaway in Llano, be sure to add climbing Enchanted Rock to your plans.

We recommend planning ahead: the park often fills to capacity, so booking reservations in advance is highly encouraged.

… or Inks Lake State Park.

Looking for a lake instead of a giant granite rock?

The beautiful Inks Lake State Park is also only 25 minutes from Llano, this time due east.

It’s a popular place to combine with the best things to do in Llano, and for good reason: the lake is the perfect place to either hike or cool off in the water.

Where is Llano, TX?

Llano is located in the northwest part of the Texas Hill Country, about 1.5 hours (or 74 miles) from Austin.

The best things to do in Llano can easily be combined with a visit to Marble Falls , Inks Lake State Park, Lake LBJ, Burnet , or even Fredericksburg .

An Italian Mama's Guide to Italy

Visiting Burano Italy cover image: colorful houses on canal in Burano

Visiting Burano: all you need to know about Italy’s most colorful town

Visiting Burano: travel guide to the best things do in Burano, what makes this small island special and how to get there for a perfect day trip from Venice

Burano is a small, charming island in the Venice Lagoon, in the North of Italy.

It is often mentioned as one of the prettiest towns in Italy and also ones of the most unique thanks to two characteristics: its canals and its colorful houses that make the island a real rainbow of colors!

Visiting Burano is easy. You can visit as a day trip from Venice or even just for a half day and you can choose whether to do it on your own or add it to a longer lagoon trip that includes also nearby Murano.

We loved Burano when we visited: we got there on a cold winter day and even with the low light typical of January in Venice, the charm of the place came thought .

I highly recommend visiting Burano: this is all you need to know to plan your trip.

Visiting Burano: what makes it special

There are several reasons to visit Burano.

Burano is has colorful houses that make it unique in the Venice Lagoon and a photographer’s dream

The town has small canals and feels a little like a miniature Venice, minus the crowds

Burano is famous for the artisan production of lace, so it is a lovely place for quality shopping

Burano is the birth place of Buranelli Biscuits, usually a hit with kids especially and a treat worth tasting, especially on a cold day, accompanying a cup of tea!

No time to read the full post now? Pin it for later!

Photo collage of images of Burano with overlay text of article title

The best things to see in Burano

Burano is a small place and the best way to enjoy it is to simply let the town inspire you and get lost in its streets: you will not stay lost for long and aimless wandering here is incredibly relaxing!

However, if you are short on time or you want to make sure you see the main Burano attractions, these are the best things to do.

Burano’s colorful houses

The main reasons people come to Burano is to see the town’s beautiful and quaint colorful houses and indeed, they are a delight!

Colorful houses in Burano, Italy

You will see them straight away.

As you get off the ferry from Venice or Murano, you will see a first cluster of them right in front of you and the rest of the town has many more.

The houses all have different color facades, so the best way to enjoy them it to see a row of them or even the two sides of a canal flanked by colorful walls.

However, one house is special and worth seeking out, the so called ‘Casa di Bepi’. Rather than one color, the house is decorated with many, thanks to the careful work of its owner!

You can see Casa di Bepi in Corte del Pistor, in Burano town center.

Burano Lace Museum: the place to learn about Burano’s lace tradition

Burano has an ancient tradition of making lace and there are several place in the town to admire this art and learn about it.

Many shops around the town showcase their lace creations but the best place to learn abou tit is the Lace Museum ( Museo del Merletto ).

Fun fact : Burano’s lace tradition seems to have its roots in the fishing nature of the village. The ability to sew came from the need to repair fishing nets and slowly evolved to a real from of art that got to international fame in the 1400s and is still going strong!

Piazza Galluppi

Burano has only one square as such, Piazza Galluppi, which is lovely and large.

Here, you have several cafes, lace shops and lots of space for kids to run around, something we loved when we visited Venice with the kids and spent out afternoon in Burano.

It was here that we got a warming cup of tea and Buranelli, a pleasant stop I recommend!

The leaning tower of Burano

The leaning tower of Pisa is way more famous than this one but Burano does have a leaning tower and it is worth seeing it!

You can spot it behind the rows of colorful houses, a perfect photo opp to capture the essence of Burano!

Burano colorful houses, canals and tower in the background on a winter day

Most visitors stay around the ferry port of Burano but it is worth stretching your legs a little farther and go into Mazzorbo, a small island connected to Burano by a wooden bridge.

Mazzorbo is quiet, rural and secluded: it was founded in 640AD and is characterized by many vegetable patched and a distinctive bucolic feel.

This is a lovely place to see a different side of the Venice lagoon, away from the glitz, glamour and crowds of its most famous spots.

Visiting Burano with kids

Burano is lovely with kids. The rainbow houses, the small quaint streets and the lack of cars make it perfect for a quiet afternoon exploring and if you want you can also go and have a play in the small playground in Mazzorbo.

A good excuse to check out this part of the Venetian lagoon so many miss!

How to get to Burano from Venice

Visiting Burano from Venice is very easy.

The island of Burano is connected to Venice by regular ferries. They depart from Fondamenta Nuove, in Cannaregio, and bring you to Burano in about 40 minutes.

Ferry tickets are sold at the ferry stop and can be bough on the day.

If you prefer to visit Burano with a guided tour or include a stop in Murano, the intermediate ferry stop between Venice and Burano, you can also opt for a day trip.

These are some good options:

  • Glimpse of Murano, Burano, Torcello:   4.5 hours tour
  • Murano and Burano half day tour from Venice:  4 hours
  • Murano Glass and Burano lace experience:   5 hour tour

Tickets for the ferry to Burano are also included in the Venice Tranport Pass that you can buy here

I hope you enjoyed this quick guide to visiting Burano and it gave you good ideas. Safe travel planning!

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
