Guidelines for International Transit/Transfer in Thailand (Effective from 1 Mar 2022)

Currently, International flights with transit/transfer passengers shall be permitted only at

S uvarnabhumi International Airport and Don Mueang International Airport .

• Each passenger shall possess the complete set of documents which include:

–  Travel health insurance covering health care and treatment expenses for COVID-19 disease, or any other guarantee throughout their stay in the Kingdom, with a coverage of no less than 10,000 USD. This requirement (insurance) does not apply to Thai travellers.

• The time period of each Transit/Transfer operation shall not exceed 24 hours.
• Each passenger must not need to clear immigration or leave the airport transit lounge for any reason before boarding your onwards flight.
• Transit visa, unless the passenger qualifies for Tourist Visa Exemption Scheme.

• Thailand reopens the country without quarantine to fully vaccinated travelers from any countries and territories under the Test and Go program .

I am an expat leaving Thailand for a short time and returning. Do I have to apply for Thailand Pass and Test & Go?

Yes. At this time, all people entering Thailand must apply for a Thailand Pass and follow Test & Go requirements if they are fully vaccinated. This includes having the required entry requirements such as insurance, SHA+ hotel booking, RT-PCR test, and Thailand Pass approval.

I am an expat returning to Thailand. Can I quarantine at home instead of a hotel?

No. No matter what visa you hold in Thailand, you must follow the Test & Go entry requirements. You must spend 1 night in a SHA+ quarantine hotel while waiting for your RT-PCR test result.

Have the April 1 changes to pre-departure RT-PCR testing come into effect?

Yes. Pre-departure RT-PCR tests are no longer required when entering Thailand.

Has the April 1 change come into effect for the Sandbox scheme?

Yes. The Sandbox scheme now requires only 5 nights of quarantine in the Sandbox designated area. Visitors must now do 1 x RT-PCR test and 1 x ATK test on day 5 instead of 2 x RT-PCR tests. The Test & Go program is a better option for those who are fully vaccinated.

Have the April 1 changes come into effect for the un-vaccinated Alternate Quarantine scheme?

Yes. The Alternate Quarantine timeframe has been reduced from 10 nights to 5 nights. You still need to have 2 x RT-PCR tests during this time. The tests will be taken on Day 1 and on Day 4 or 5.

I booked a 10-day Alternate Quarantine package but I am arriving after April 1. What should I do with the new changes?

You may contact your hotel. If you have not arrived in Thailand before April 1, you are eligible for the updated 5-day Alternate Quarantine scheme. Your hotel will advise what options are available to you.

Do I need to print my Thailand Pass documents for when I arrive at Passport Control in Thailand?

Yes. It is the best practice as you will present these documents to Immigration and Health Officers at the airport Passport and Health Control.

If you only have digital copies and something happens to your electronic device, you will not be allowed to enter the country.

How do I present my Thailand Pass QR code if my mobile phone is not working?

You should print a hard copy of your Thailand Pass QR code. If your mobile device does not work in Thailand, you can still present the QR code to Immigration and Health Officers at the airport Passport and Health Control.

Can I upload my Thailand Pass QR code to the MorChana App before I arrive in Thailand?

No. You can download the MorChana App before arriving in Thailand, but it will not allow uploads until you arrive in the country. You may ask your SHA+ hotel staff to assist you on how to navigate the app.

If I land in Phuket with the correct insurance, my SHA+ hotel, airport transfer, and separate RT-PCR tests booked, can I apply for Test & Go?

Yes. The above requirements are required to apply for Test & Go and Thailand Pass. You will also need to be vaccinated to apply for Test & Go.

Have the April 1 changes affected domestic flights in Thailand?

No. When landing in Thailand, domestic flights on arrival must still be approved “sealed” flights. Please check with Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways for the new list of sealed flights to Phuket and Samui.

Can I do my Test & Go quarantine in Pattaya?

Yes. If you land in Bangkok you can organize Test & Go quarantine in Pattaya. Your SHA+ hotel must provide transport from Bangkok airport to the hotel.

If your flight lands directly at Pattaya airport you will do your RT-PCR test at the airport and then be transported to your hotel.

Are international flights landing in Pattaya?

There are flights now landing directly at Pattaya U-tapao International Airport. Check with your airline provider for available direct flights.

Can I take a domestic flight from Bangkok to Pattaya for Test & Go quarantine?

Only if the flight is an approved “sealed” flight. This should be booked as part of your international flight itinerary.

If you book separate domestic flights, you are required to quarantine for 1 night in Bangkok before traveling to Pattaya.

Why is my US credit card being rejected when trying to book my RT-PCR test?

There is an issue with www.thailandpsas.com approving transactions with American credit cards. You can contact your hotel and they will organize the RT-PCR test booking for you.

I am trying to book hotel transport in Phuket with an American credit card and it is rejected. What can I do?

Transport from the airport to your hotel should be included in your SHA+ quarantine package. If there is an issue booking your hotel with an American credit card, try a different card or purchase through PayPal.

My hotel in Phuket does not offer transport from the hotel. What should I do?

Any SHA+/AQ hotel should include transport from the airport to their hotel. If they do not offer this service, it is best to look at different hotels because you cannot organize private transport.

Where can I see if hotel transfer is included in Phuket when looking at Agoda?

Many Phuket hotels do not list Airport Transfer on their front page. Click into the hotel and look at the bottom left corner of the details page. Airport transfer will be listed here under services offered.

How do I book a private transfer from the airport to a hotel in Phuket?

You cannot. Transfer from Phuket airport to your hotel must be provided by the hotel so it meets all Covid safety measures.

COVID-19 Thailand Visa Amnesty/Extension

What is a visa amnesty or covid extension.

It is the visa relief or 60-day visa extension for all foreign nationals staying in Thailand affected by the COVID-19 crisis. Foreigners can apply for a COVID extension at any immigration office until March 25, 2022.

Who are covered by the visa amnesty or COVID extension?

All foreign nationals who are legally staying in Thailand whether you are here on visa exemption entry stamps and tourist visas. The holders of non-immigrant visas, or yearly extension of stays are not eligible for the COVID extension.

What are the current implementing rules regarding the visa amnesty or COVID extension?

• Visas or permits to stay that are still valid and updated by the local Thai immigration office.
• Foreigners holding a long-term visa such as a working visa, marriage visa, or retirement are required to apply for their yearly extension at the Thai immigration office as usual.
• Foreigners do not need any embassy letter to be granted the automatic visa extension due to COVID-19.

Is the COVID-19 visa extension free of charge?

The COVID-19 extension of the visa costs 1,900 Thai baht.

Will the visa amnesty be extended?

The validity of the visa amnesty is until March 25, 2022 only. There is no indication that this visa amnesty or grace period will be extended.

What will happen when the visa amnesty is lifted or not extended anymore?

When the situation is resolved and returns to normal, foreigners must leave Thailand on or before the permit to stay date in their passports or they must apply for the proper another type of visa at the immigration office.

Visa Exemption and Visa on Arrival

Foreigners under the Visa Exemption program and the Visa on Arrival programs may now travel to Thailand. Foreigners under the Visa Exemption may enter Thailand without a visa for up to 30 days and travelers under the Visa on Arrival program may stay in Thailand for up to 15 days. Yes, there have been no changes regarding the visa extension application whether it is your first time to extend or the second time to extend. The application is still done in person. Thai immigration offices are practicing different measures such as social distancing and disinfecting the area to make sure that the applicants are not at risk of contracting the COVID-19. You might want to see if your local Thai immigration is open on Saturdays. That is a less crowded day of the week to visit the immigration office.

I have tried online reporting and reporting through a mobile app, both attempts failed. What are my other options?

If the online and mobile app reporting does not work, you need to do the reporting by yourself or you can ask a visa agent or third party to do the 90-day address reporting. You need to provide a power of attorney and the 90-day reporting documents such as the original and copy of the passport. There is no immigration fee for address reporting.

Is it required by law to wear a face mask?

The emergency decree issued by the Thai Government that came into effect recommends everyone wear a face mask when they are outside of their residence. However, some provinces such as Phuket have their own rule and you will be subject to a penalty. In Bangkok, commuters are required to wear a face mask when using public transportation and while in public places.

Should I carry my passport at all times?

Yes. If you are a foreigner and you will be out of your residence or hotel, you need to carry your passport especially right now that there are random checks to check the visa validity. It is also good to know that there are banks that would not allow you to enter the premises if you have traveled recently abroad, so it is best to have your passport with you at all times.

I am aware of the entry requirements for foreigners entering Thailand, is there special consideration for those traveling with my Thai family or visiting my Thai family?

At the moment, you can enter Thailand. You just have to make sure that you have obtained a Thailand Pass , purchased COVID-19 Insurance , had a COVID-19 test and you will undergo a mandatory Test and Go or ASQ quarantine.

I have a Non-Immigrant B visa and work permit expiring on April 24, due to my country’s travel restriction I cannot return to Thailand to renew it. What are my options?

If your country does not allow you to travel to Thailand or if your country of departure is under the travel ban, I regret to inform you that there is nothing you are able to do. It is not possible to renew it while you are outside Thailand and it is also not possible to renew it at the Thai embassy in your country. Should your visa and work permit expire while you are outside Thailand, you need to apply for a new non-immigrant B visa for you to enter Thailand and after you have entered Thailand, you can apply for a new work permit.

When do I need the embassy letter for the COVID-19 visa extension?

As of writing, the embassy letter is no longer required by the immigration office to receive the 60-day COVID-19 extensions.

I am looking for flights from Laos to Europe and this requires me to transit in Thailand. Do I need a Health Certificate when transiting? There are multiple different articles including the one on Thai Airways stating that a Health Certificate is required for transiting passengers.

The best solution for this is to avoid overstaying so that you will not get in trouble in the future. If you do not have a new contract from the school it is imperative for you to return to your home country until you have a new contract and apply for a new visa from the Thai embassy there. Once you have secured a new non-immigrant B visa, you may return to Thailand together with a copy of the health certificate and health insurance. Another option is to request a COVID extension while you are preparing the documents for your non-immigrant B visa. Some immigration offices are now issuing non-immigrant B visas.

Hello, I am just checking to see if we qualify for the Phuket Sandbox. My husband, daughter and I are Canadian diplomats currently residing in Malaysia. It didnt come easy. PAL rejected my requests couple of times but am happy to inform you that I was finally accommodated on their June 30 flight. My only worry now is my visa expires 3 days earlier than my flight. I dont want to have any record of overstaying. If you do get into a pickle, healthcare in Thailand is some of the best in the world; the sixth-best , to be precise. It’s so good, in fact, that Bangkok has become one of the hotspots for medical, cosmetic, and dental tourism. Not that your Bangkok travel insurance will cover you for a new nose, we’re afraid to report.

Thailand’s health service is three-tiered. Appointments are the priciest, and you can expect to be seen swiftly in the private sector, where facilities are of the highest standard. Government-funded healthcare is funded by the Ministry of Public Health. These services are reliable but can be extremely busy. Rates are lower than private healthcare. Non-profit health organisations operate to help disadvantaged Thais.

It’s worth noting that most medical practitioners in Thailand are specialists in their field, so some tourists may struggle to find a suitable doctor for minor health complaints. English-speaking medical practitioners can be found across the country, particularly in popular tourist destinations, such as major cities and the Thai islands.

Costs vary depending on the level of treatment you require and the hospital you visit. Healthcare in Thailand is significantly cheaper than in the West. All hospitals and clinics set their own fees, which will be provided on request. Typically, a Thai Doctor consultation will set you back 500 – 1000 baht ($15 – $30 ). Further fees apply for treatment, laboratory tests, and prescription medicine. Bear in mind that prescription medicine is more expensive at the hospital pharmacy. Shop locally for cheaper meds.

Travel insurance for visitors to Thailand should cover medical costs. Remember that if you plan to stray off the banana pancake trail, you might find healthcare is more basic.

Crime in Thailand

Violent crime against tourists in Thailand is very rare. Such instances are more likely to happen at night, so do be cautious when out partying or walking back to your hostel late at night, particularly if you’re on your own. Female travellers should exercise caution after drinking and late at night, as sexual assaults are more commonly reported following Full Moon Parties .

It’s not uncommon for travellers to fall victim to pickpocketing or petty theft in Thailand. Theft typically occurs when valuables are left unattended or shown off in the street as easy pickings. Thai thieves are not known for being confrontational, so muggings are rare, but they still can happen. It’s not unheard of for a sly motorcyclist to swipe a smartphone as they glide past an unsuspecting backpacker. So again, keep your valuables safe. Pick up a ‘bumbag’ at Khao San Road. You should be particularly cautious at beach bars, markets, on public transport, and in tourist-populated areas.

Back in the day, night buses in Thailand had a shady reputation for theft. Nowadays, theft is less common, but it does still happen. Keep your valuables secure on your person. Most hotels and hostels in Thailand will have a 24-hour reception desk, CCTV, and lockers are usually provided. However, the cheapest dorms are likely to have less security.

• Theft of personal goods – smartphones, laptops and expensive cameras attract the eyes of thieves. It’s also remarkably easy to drop your phone down the side of the seat during your island-hopping cruise or misplace it at a party.
• Motorbike crashes – one of the best ways to travel in Thailand is by motorbike. It’s also one of the best ways to wind up in the emergency room in Thailand. Even the most competent motorcyclist can be caught out by inclement weather or less able drivers. Before you purchase Thailand Travel Insurance, make sure you carry the right licence to cover you in the event of an accident.
• Tropical diseases – Dengue is endemic in Thailand. Usually, it can be treated in the same way you would treat the flu, but this disease can become more complicated and require hospitalisation. Trust us, a week in a Thai hospital is going to set you back way more than that $5 a night dorm bed.

• Hiring a motorbike – we’ve already said this, but to reiterate: the cheapest Thailand travel insurance may not include a clause about motorbiking. Make sure you’re covered with the correct license and check whether or not your insurance covers any damage to the vehicle.
• Trekking – whether in the mountainous north or while chasing waterfalls in one of the country’s glorious national parks , like Khao Sok, hiking in Thailand is something you should definitely try. But if you turn over on your ankle and need to hail a helicopter to the nearest emergency room, you might want to check you’re covered.
• Rock climbing – we’re looking at you, Tonsai. Tonsai Beach is renowned for its rock climbing, so if you fancy being shown the ropes, make sure your Krabi travel insurance has your back.
• Scuba diving – if you’ve got your heart set on finding Nemo, ensure that your Ko Tao travel insurance covers your underwater activities before taking that giant stride off the boat.

These are some key terms to look out for when you are comparing different insurance policies. Now, let’s take a closer look at each one of these to see what they actually mean!

Emergency Medical costs cover, is the most important aspects of most travel insurance policies. If you are involved in an accident or get very sick with a mystery illness, you want to rest easy knowing that any medical costs and hospital bills will be taken care of.

Many of you will have never seen a medical bill. Good. But let me tell you, they can get very expensive very easily. My friend was once billed $10,000 in Costa Rica. Even 2 days in a Thai hospital cost him nearly $2,000.00 ( that boy has no luck… ).

Pre-existing medical and health conditions may not be covered or may be covered for an additional premium.

Ideally, Emergency Accident & Sickness Medical insurance should offer at least $100,000.00 of coverage. Some run into the millions.

Luggage and Personal Stuff coverage covers the value of your personal property. It’s most common application is for lost luggage and However, many policies also extend this to cover “on the ground” theft which comes in useful if you are robbed once you reach your destination.

The limits on this vary between policies. However, the maximum value rarely exceeds $1000 with a maximum item value between – $250 – $500.

This is ok for many travellers. However if you travel with a lot of electrical gear (laptop & camera), or are packing ski-ing gear, you may also wish to think about taking out a separate gadget cover.

Emergency evacuation covers the cost of sending you back to your home country in a sickbed. Let’s say that the above mentioned illness is a nasty one, and the decision is taken to send you home for further treatment; this will take care of the high costs of flying you home with tubes stuck into your arms.

Repatriation is the cost of sending your body home in the unlikely event that you die on your trip. The costs of this are usually very high. Repatriation costs are not a burden I would want to leave to my family. Whilst this is thankfully rare, I do sometimes come across Facebook or “Go Fund Me” campaigns for somebody’s body to be flown home.

Non-medical Emergency Evacuation is when you have to be evacuated from your destination because of some unexpected crisis.  Examples can be outbreaks of war/civil unrest and earthquakes that decimate infrastructure such as the Nepal earthquake.

In more recent times, the Corona COVID-19 outbreak created the biggest international emergency evacuation situation ever. ( FYI – it straddled both the medical and non-medical evacuation boundaries ).

Emergency evacuation insurance covers the costs of having to book a last-minute flight home ( which can be very expensive ) and will also cover accommodation costs if you end up being flown to a random, “safe” country rather than going straight home.

Having to cancel a trip that you were psyched about is heartbreaking. However, then being left out of pocket just adds scurrilous insult to grievous injury. Trip Cancellation cover can help you recover the non-refundable costs of your trip such as flight and hotel costs.

Obviously, you can’t claim this simply because you changed your mind about the trip or broke up with your girlfriend. Legitimate cancellation reasons are things like sickness, family emergencies, bereavement, natural disaster and war – you get the gist.

Trip Interruption is when something goes wrong, or interrupts, your trip leaving you out of pocket. One example, when your pre-paid hotel burns down and you are forced to book another one. Another example is when your flight home is cancelled and you need a few extra nights at your hotel.

Anything Else? The above are what we consider to be the basic, bare-bones of travel insurance policies. However, some policies do offer a few more aspects to them. The very best Thailand travel insurance policies may also include the following;

Adventure Sports and Activities

Adventure sports and activities are not covered by all travel insurance policies. The definition of adventure sports and activities really does vary between providers but for example, can include;

• Martial Arts
• Bungee Jumping
• Scuba Diving
• Informal basketball games….

If you are even thinking about doing anything physical or outdoorsy on your trip, it is very wise to check that your insurance provider is in fact covering it. Snapped tendons tend to hurt plenty enough without having hefty medical bills attached to them.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment

This one is perhaps a bit macabre. It doesn’t cover any travel related expenses as such but instead it basically provides you (or your next of kin) with monetary compensation in the event that something happens to you. If you die, your loved ones get a payout. Or, if you lose a toe or something, YOU get a payout.

It’s kind of like having a bit of life cover attached to your travel insurance.

“ Well dear, I’m afraid there is good new and bad news. The bad news is that our beloved daughter little Jenny died on her trip to Thailand. The good news is that we get $10k! Thailand here WE come! ”

Gear and Electronics Cover

Some insurance policies cover electronic gadgets but others do not. Those that do, sometimes charge an additional fee and they also usually limit the maximum item value. If you only travel with a phone or a tablet then your travel insurer may well cover it entirely. However, if like us if you are traveling with a decent laptop and camera, then you may wish to consider obtaining gadget cover.

Choosing the right travel insurance for your Thailand holiday is like choosing a pair of shoes. Only you can really say how well they fit, and how many miles you can manage in them.

To decide who the right insurer for you is, you need to add up how much your trip is worth, how much equipment you plan to take with you and what activities you intend to engage in.

You also need to ask yourself how much you can afford. This means how much you can afford to pay for cover but also how much you can afford to be out of pocket in the unlikely event of an incident. Sometimes, the cheapest Thailand travel insurance will be enough and sometimes it will be worth spending a bit more.

You have a Thai Airways connecting flight which consists of two or more flights. In some cases, all of these flights will be operated by one airline — Thai Airways. These will be Thai Airways airplanes and Thai Airways staff. But it’s not always like that with Thai Airways.

1.2 Thai Airways Codeshare Partners

Sometimes airlines share their flights.

If an airline shares a flight with another airline, it can offer its passengers a wider flight network. Even to destinations it doesn’t have flights. So, you may book a connecting flight from Thai Airways, but it might be operated by another airline — its partner. Connecting flights with different airlines is a norm in aviation. These kind of flights are called codeshare flights, and airlines collaborating on these flights — codeshare partners.

What you should know is that:

• If you miss a connecting flight through no fault of your own, Thai Airways has to offer you a new flight free of charge. If you missed your flight because of the delay or cancellation of your previous flight, the airline has to deal with it. Contact Thai Airways to learn about your options.
• If your flight is heavily delayed, cancelled or overbooked, compensation is paid by airline operating this particular flight. If it’s operated by some other airline, not Thai Airways, then they are called operating airline — they have to pay compensation when it’s due.

2. What If Thai Airways Cancels a Flight?

Why is Thai Airways cancelling flights?

Bad weather, security issues, technical problems, staffing shortages and several other reasons could lead to flight delays and cancellations. Some of these troubles are “extraordinary” (unrelated to the airline), but some of them the airline can and should try to avoid.

2.1 One of Your Flights Is Cancelled

Thai Airways is a Thai airline.

It’s not a European airline. But despite this fact, on some of its flights you are protected by European laws.

According to the EU Regulation 261/2004, they must:

• Offer you a choice between a new flight and full refund.
• Offer you assistance at the airport (you have a right to care ).

This only applies to their flights departing from Europe.

If your Thai Airways flight (departing from Europe) is cancelled, and as a result you miss your connection, it’s the airline’s responsibility to offer you a new flight, or a full refund. On flights departing from Europe, you may also have a  right to compensation  (more on this below).

2.2 All Your Flights Are Cancelled

Overall, for you as a passenger, the options are the same.

According to the EU Regulation 261/2004, Thai Airways must:

• Offer you assistance at the airport if it’s a last-minute cancellation and you are already at the airport (you have a right to care ).

This applies to all their flights departing from Europe.

Refund must be paid within seven days.

You may have a right to EU flight cancellation compensation.

2.3 Thai Airways Refund for Cancellation

Yes, you have a right to ask for a refund.

If your cancelled Thai Airways flight is departing from a European airport, you can choose either a new flight or full refund. The refund must be paid by bank transfer within 7 days. You don’t have to accept any coupons or points/ miles.

3. Thai Airways Missed Connecting Flight

Why do people miss connecting flights?

It could be a silly mistake — like falling asleep while waiting for your flight or waiting at the wrong gate. Or it could be due to late or cancelled previous flight. Airport congestions and long queues can affect your travel plans greatly, too.

3.1 What Happens If You Miss Thai Airways Connection?

If it’s your fault that it happened — it’s your responsibility.

If it’s not your fault, then your airline has to take care of that. If you booked a flight from Thai Airways, it doesn’t even matter if the flight is operated by Thai Airways or not, you should contact Thai Airways. It’s their responsibility to find a solution and to take you to your destination.

• Take you to your final destination as soon as possible.

Again, the last two points apply only to flights from Europe.

On other routes, the airline still has to offer you a new flight.

3.2 Right to Compensation from Thai Airways

Sometimes you have a right to compensation .

If your Thai Airways flight:

• Departs from the EU, EEA or UK
• Is 3+ hours late and
• Is delayed or cancelled due to the fault of the airline

Then you may be entitled to compensation from Thai Airways. Don’t forget that this applies only to Thai Airways flights departing from Europe.

3.3 right to care from thai airways.

On all Thai Airways flights from Europe you have a right to care .

According to the EU Regulation 261/2004 airline should provide:

• Free food and drinks  in a reasonable relation to the waiting time.
• Free hotel accommodation  if a stay of one or more nights is necessary.
• Free airport transfer  to hotel and back.
• Plus, two telephone calls, telex or fax messages, or e-mails. So you can notify your loved ones about the changes in your travel plans.

In case of Thai Airways, the regulation applies only to flights departing from European airports (EU, UK, EEA).

When it comes to air passenger rights, unless otherwise stated, we talk about air passenger rights in the EU, EEA and UK. When we say Europe or European, we mean EU, EEA or UK. This is done for the simplicity, since the according laws in these countries are about the same.

4. How to Book Connecting Flights with Thai Airways?

You can do it directly from Thai Airways or via a third-party.

The best way is to book directly from the airline. But it’s not always the cheapest option. Alternatively, you can use third party ticket sellers to book Thai Airways connecting flights. If you see a better deal. We would suggest using only well known sites for this. Such as kiwi.com or edreams.com.

How to Book?

Airline website (directly).

This is the easiest way to book a connecting flight. It’s also the safest way to book a connection. You make a single booking, have a single reservation code and the booking includes several flights. Sometimes they are all with one airline, other times – two or more. Anyway, in this case, you can be 100% sure that you have a proper connecting flight .

Other Option

Flight booking websites.

Few examples: skyscanner.net , expedia.com , momondo.com .

Pay attention to the details. Because some of these sites are only search engines, and sellers are other websites. Apart from that, they often sell both airline-protected connecting flights and  self-transfer flights . If it’s a self-transfer, know that it comes with its own risks, and there are things you should take into account. Self-transfer is not the same thing as airline-protected transfer. 

For extra protection, buy also a travel insurance covering flight disruptions, or book with sites like kiwi.com , who offer extra protection.

With kiwi.com you are more protected than normally.

5. Thai Airways Connecting Flights: Baggage

Since Thai Airways is a traditional airline, everything’s very easy.

Baggage rules on connecting flights with Thai Airways are simple.

In short, Thai Airways takes care of your baggage. Check in your baggage at the origin airport. In most cases, your bag will be sent to your final destination. And you won’t need to recheck it every flight. It will be done by airport staff. Unless you have a self-transfer, or you’re traveling through a country that requires everyone to collect and recheck their baggage (e.g., US).

If you aren’t sure ask at the airport when checking in your bag.

5.1 Baggage Transfer: Different Airlines

What happens if there are several airlines?

What if one of your flights is operated by different airline, not Thai Airways? As we already talked, you may experience this, because Thai Airways does share some of its flights with its codeshare partners. In this situation the rules are the same — your baggage is being taken care of by an airline. With, Thai Airways in most situations you won’t have to worry about it.

5.2 Thai Airways Free Baggage Allowance

Baggage allowance varies — it’s not the same on all flights.

It depends on the airline, travel class, ticket type and destination. 

Your baggage allowance is shown in booking confirmation.

When booking a flight, you can see how much bags you can take with you, when you choose your travel class and ticket type. If you need more generous baggage allowance, choose a better ticket type or travel class, or add an extra bag.

5.3 Economy Light

This is the cheapest option for long-haul flights.

Economy Light comes without free baggage allowance.

We see this all across the industry. Full-service traditional airlines are offering also tickets without free checked baggage allowance. The wording is also often the same — Economy Light. So, if you see this, most likely it’s without checked baggage ( carry on baggage only).

Thai Airways doesn’t offer cabin-bag-only Economy Light fares (for now). But airline baggage policy can change. Make sure you check what is your baggage allowance, if there’s any, when you are booking a flight with any airline!

6. Connecting Flight Examples

Here are two connecting flight examples with Thai Airways International.

6.1 Protected Connecting Flights with Thai Airways International (Most Common)

For this example I’ll use the website of Thai Airways.

Let’s assume that want to fly from Bangkok to Vienna.

You have found flights for October 4, and these are some of the options:

On their website, Thai Airways sells protected connecting flights. However, as we can see, not all  of the flights are operated by Thai Airways. For example, the last leg of every option you see is operated by Austrian Airlines , one of Thai’s partner airlines. Let’s say you are taking the cheapest option (the one that costs 18765 baht, or about 520 EUR). There are two flights, and a layover in Frankfurt. Total flight duration is 13 hours 50 minutes. 

Don’t forget to pay attention to total flight duration, number of stops and price. It may vary for every flight.

6.2 Self-Transfer Flights with Thai Airways International

Now, let’s assume, that your itinerary is slightly more complex.

You want to fly to Graz after spending a couple of days in Vienna.

• You can book a connecting flight to Vienna, like in the example above. For example, you’re taking one of the cheapest options, the 2nd one, which arrives in Vienna at 9:15 pm. 
• And then you go to kiwi.com, or some flight search engine, and book a flight from Vienna to Graz. Leaving yourself, let’s say, 30 hours in Vienna (a nice stopover in Vienna). You may also book this flight directly from airline.

Until Vienna you have an airline-protected connecting flight. If your first flight is delayed or cancelled, the airline will put you on another flight for free. However, the last leg, Vienna – Graz is a self-transfer with a stopover in Vienna (it’s not a layover , because it’s more than 24 hours). It’s a separate flight. You will need to check in for this flight separately, and check in your bag too.
