Journey to the Center of the Earth

N ot a patch on the 1959 version of Jules Verne's novel starring James Mason, Journey to the Center of the Earth , the directorial debut of special effects expert Eric Brevig, leans heavily on state-of-the-art 3D to make an impression, which it certainly did on the audience of 12-year-olds with whom I saw it. They were silent throughout, except for the shrieks that went up when various monsters jumped out of the screen into our faces. A knowing infant sitting behind me said to his chum as the lights went up: 'I'd give it eight-and-a-half out of 10.'

Restricting itself to three characters - an American geologist (Brendan Fraser), his 13-year-old nephew (Josh Hutcherson) and an Icelandic mountain guide (Anita Briem) - the film retraces in the present the journey taken by Verne's characters in the 19th century. After bickering during the first half of their hazardous mission, they finally bond at the Earth's centre, an example of 'esprit de core', presumably. It's simple stuff, but effective and as usual Fraser does his amiable all-American innocent. The most bizarre moment comes when his young nephew takes a call from Mom on his mobile while battling giant flying fish and brontosauruses as he crosses a subterranean lake.

10 Best Movies Based On Jules Verne Books, Ranked

  • Jules Verne's work has inspired numerous movie adaptations and is the foundation for some of the earliest science fiction films.
  • Some Jules Verne adaptations are entertaining and enjoyable, while others are outdated and not required viewing.
  • The film "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (2008) successfully updates Verne's classic story with modern special effects and remains fun to watch.

Jules Verne is undoubtedly one of the most prominent authors in science fiction , and its no wonder that his works have inspired countless movie adaptations. One of the most translated writers in human history, the French author has written legendary tales like 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Around the World in 80 Days . Verne's daring imagination put him far ahead of his time, and it's no surprise that movie studios have sought to replicate his sense of wonder with multiple live-action adaptations of Jules Verne stories .

Jules Verne's work has become the foundation for some of the earliest films in the science fiction genre , some of which even hold up today remarkably well as enjoyable, adventurous romps through the imagination. The mid-to-late 2000s saw a resurgence of Jules Verne films as well, to varying degrees of success, with studios hoping to recapture the joy and nostalgia of the earliest films to adapt Verne's books for a new generation. With so many familiar titles, it's a difficult task to distinguish the very best depictions of Jules Verne's novels over the years.

Journey To The Center Of The Earth

An easily-overlooked made-for-TV movie, the two-part Journey to the Center of the Earth special was a solid attempt at getting to the center of what made Verne's original story so memorable. The film is decidedly slow-moving and low-budgeted, with some creature effects occasionally bordering the precipice of acceptable for a shoestring budget, but the C-List actors can often bring in decent performances amid the campy set-dressing. Despite it's many flaws, the two-part film is an entertaining, knowingly campy jog through Verne's beloved tale of subterranean exploration.

Master Of The World

Master of the World is the sole film to adapt Jules Verne's novel of the same name, and when compared to his other, more well-known stories, it's easy to see why. The narrative of a rich maniac dedicated to the idea of threatening the world's governments into laying down their arms isn't quite as whimsical as Verne's other premises. As for the film, despite rich talent from the likes of a young Charles Bronson and the legendary Vincent Price , the special effects are especially outdated, even for the time period . Master of the World is fun, but not required viewing.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

Journey 2: the mysterious island.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is the follow-up to 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth. The film takes place four years after the original, showing Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson teaming up with Hank, his stepfather, to find his lost grandfather. Due to scheduling issues, Brendan Fraser wasn't able to return as Trevor Anderson but was replaced by Dwayne Johnson as the film's lead.

Release Date 2012-02-12

Director Brad Peyton

Cast Josh Hutcherson, Michael Caine, Vanessa Hudgens, Dwayne Johnson

This semi-adaptation picks up where 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth left off, replacing Brendan Fraser with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. As the passable action adventure delves into the incredible isle, the tone rides a strange line, at once too scary for younger viewers and too subdued for older ones. Amid mediocre CGI and all-too subdued performances, the best thing that can be said about Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was how it pioneered the art of throwing Johnson into a jungle, later done better in films like Jungle Cruise and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle .

Around The World In 80 Days

Though the idea of circumnavigating the globe in the span of 80 days is now a triviality, in Verne's time, such a time was the stuff of science fiction. The 1956 take on the story is an incredibly grand adventure comedy with a runtime that feels nearly as long as the titular journey itself. The international cast is crammed with stars of Hollywood's Golden Age , who had enough charisma between them to earn the film an early Academy Award for Best Picture. Today, the spectacle and aged humor can be best appreciated as a museum of 50s stardom.

Starring a young Josh Hutcherson and Brendan Fraser, still hot off the success of The Mummy trilogy , 2008's Journey To The Center Of The Earth had all the makings of an action-adventure hit. Being the first to truly update one of Verne's classic stories with modern special effects, the film still looks great 15 years later, even if it is marred by several obvious moments clearly meant to be enjoyed in the context of a 3-D theater. Adapting the classic adventure about as well as it could have, Journey To The Center Of The Earth isn't revolutionary, but undeniably fun.

While most adaptations of Verne's work make at least some departures from the source material, 2004's Around The World In 80 Days completely re-imagines the story as a raucous action-comedy. Though critically-panned at the time, the film is endlessly re-watchable today , with eye-popping action choreography courtesy of Jackie Chan's Passepartout and deadpan comedic timing from Steve Coogan's Phineas Fogg. If the anachronisms and deviations from Verne's novel can be forgiven, Around The World In 80 Days is a creative globe-trotting adventure that doesn't get the respect it deserves.

There's simply no replicating the cheesy fun of the original Journey To The Center Of The Earth , an earnest science fiction adventure movie that wears its heart on its sleeve. The special effects are certainly dated, but it's hard not to wring a certain level of charm out of the delicately hand-painted backgrounds and practical lizardman costumes. Beyond the addition of the deliciously dastardly villain, Count Saknussemm, the film is also one of the most faithful to Verne's work, a commendable effort in and of itself.

The Mysterious Island

The Mysterious Island is one of Jules Verne's lesser-known stories, but the 1961 film of the same name takes every advantage of the novel's conceits. Following a group of Union soldiers in the Civil War who escape prison in a hot air balloon only to wash up on a bizarre uncharted island, the film's sense of tension only ever dials up, as the heroes contend with grimy human pirates and giant fauna rendered by the talent of stop-motion legend Ray Harryhausen . Not the deepest narrative, this thrilling tale of danger holds up decades later remarkably well as a harrowing odyssey.

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea

One of Disney's earliest forays into live-action storytelling, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea presented the aquatic crew of the Nautilus with untold dangers then-undreamed of by 50s audiences. Beyond the great creature and sci-fi technology designs that still hold up today, the film offers substantially more heart than most other Verne adaptations, taking the time to acclimate the viewer with its intrepid adventurers. It's no wonder that 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was influential enough to earn a spot as a Disneyland mainstay even seven decades after its original release.

A Trip To The Moon

It's only fitting that the world's first science fiction movie sprung from the mind of one of the genre's most influential authors. Presenting early audiences with a dizzying idea of space travel long before the first astronaut was born, A Trip To The Moon 's hypnotic, almost feverish visuals and brisk 14-minute run time assaults the imagination with a yet-unmatched spectacle of dreamlike reality. From the Moon's incredulous face to the dancing insectoid aliens that vanish in a literal puff of smoke, A Trip To The Moon is by far the most influential science fiction film courtesy of Jules Verne.

The 10 Best 21st Century Movies Set in the '90s, Ranked

These are... *checks notes* da bomb.

The 1990s were an incredible decade for many things, particularly pop culture. With plenty of movies and remarkable songs released during this era, it makes sense why so many people are drawn to this particular period. While most of the love for it is understandably rooted in nostalgia, it is an undeniable fact that the 1990s were an iconic decade that helped shape history, bringing innovation in different fields and technological advances.

While a good number of quintessential 1990s movies accurately represent their unforgettable surroundings, a handful of features from later decades have also managed to capture the essence, atmosphere, and even depict the historical events that made the decade such a beloved one. From the MCU's Captain Marvel to Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street , these are the best 21st century movies set in the '90s that fans of the decade would probably enjoy checking out .

10 'Captain Marvel' (2019)

Directors: anna boden, ryan fleck.

Despite its mixed reviews, Captain Marvel is one of the most talked-about movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for several reasons. In the year it was released — a historic one for Disney — Captain Marvel became one of seven movies to gross $1 billion. According to Box Office Mojo , it is also one of Marvel's highest-grossing . The film stars Brie Larson in the lead role and follows the titular character on a self-discovery journey, where she attempts to learn more about her past while stuck in an intergalactic conflict between two alien civilizations.

On top of its entertaining narrative that portrays the cinematic universe in a different light and draws inspiration from some action movies of the mentioned decade, what makes Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's movie stand out from other MCU installments is the fact that it is set in the 1990s , offering audiences a good dose of nostalgia and throwback, especially when the Blockbuster video store is shown. It is a fun film throughout (particularly for cat lovers), even if hardly a masterpiece.

9 'Honey Boy' (2019)

Director: alma har'el.

Filmed in Los Angeles over a short course of three weeks, Alma Har'el 's heartbreaking coming-of-age tale Honey Boy sees a young actor, played by both Noah Jupe and Lucas Hedges at different ages, navigate a stormy childhood and early adult years. In the meantime, he struggles to reconcile with his father ( Shia LaBeouf , who originally wrote the script while in rehab) and his alcoholism and declining mental health.

Although Honey Boy is technically set in the early 2000s, it also sends audiences back to the mid-90s (most specifically 1995) to illustrate Otis' troublesome childhood. Har'el complex film manages to recreate the charming, nostalgic atmosphere of the decade while also sending out poignant messages about generational trauma that triggers severe mental health issues and the subsequent results (which would be addiction, in this case).

8 'Into the Wild' (2007)

Director: jon krakauer.

One of the best movies for nature lovers, Into the Wild is an adaptation of the 1996 non-fiction book of the same name written by Jon Krakauer . It tells the incredible though heart-wrenching real-life story of top student and athlete Christopher McCandless , played by Emile Hirsch , who hiked across North America into the Alaskan wilderness in the early 1990s after graduating from Emory University.

Although its depiction of the beloved decade certainly differs a bit from other movies on this list , the Sean Penn-directed, beautifully shot Golden Globe-nominated film will likely keep audiences intrigued throughout, offering them a memorable and visually striking depiction of life in the wilderness . As expected, Into the Wild deals with existentialist themes, including loneliness, isolation, alienation, and the individual versus society.

Watch on Apple TV

7 'Good Bye, Lenin!' (2003)

Director: wolfgang becker.

Next up is Wolfgang Becker 's must-see comedy war drama Good Bye, Lenin! starring Marvel's Zemo, Daniel Brühl . Set in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the movie centers around a young man who must keep his fragile mother ( Katrin Sass ) from a fatal shock after waking up from a long coma: she must not learn that her beloved nation of East Germany as she knew it has disappeared.

This critically acclaimed German tragicomedy is surely essential for moviegoers keen on the genre, as it perfectly encompasses what a great dark comedy should look like. Reflecting on the 1990s post-communist war Germany, this contemporary classic and socially conscious tale by Becker is surely worthwhile , especially if readers are looking to watch a film that addresses relevant historical events that happened in the decade.

6 'Erin Brockovich' (2000)

Director: steven soderbergh.

Featuring Julia Roberts in one of her most career-defining roles as an unemployed single mother who becomes a legal assistant — for which she ended up winning Best Actress at the Academy Awards — Erin Brockovich follows the titular character as she brings down a California power company accused of polluting a city's water supply (almost) solely on her own in 1993.

Erin Brockovich is an extremely well-executed dramatization of the true story of an environmental activist's incredible doings. After all, it ended up getting a Best Picture nomination for a reason. Steven Soderbergh's movie is probably not the picture that comes to mind immediately when readers think of "1990s movies," but it is still a notable film that takes viewers back to the decade while also shedding light on an important occurrence.

Erin Brockovich (2000)

5 'straight outta compton' (2015), director: f. gary gray.

This biographical drama by F. Gary Gray follows a rap group named NWA (made up of Eazy-E, Ice Cube , Dr. Dre , MC Ren , and DJ Yella ) that emerged from the streets of Compton in Los Angeles in the mid-1980s and revolutionized hip-hop culture with their groundbreaking movies and tales about life in the neighborhood. In the lead roles are O'Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins , Jason Mitchell , Neil Brown Jr. , and Aldis Hodge .

Although Straight Outta Compton took liberties with the band's story for dramatic effect, it is obviously inspired by a real-life band that is still talked about these days despite its fall. While F. Gary Gray's movie also takes place in the 1980s, it sheds light on the early 1990s time period when the band split . Needless to say, fans of rap music will probably enjoy this Academy Award-nominated feature (Best Original Screenplay).

4 'Mid90s' (2018)

Director: jonah hill.

As the title suggests, Mid90s is a great movie for 1990s enthusiasts ; in particular those who spent their childhoods in Los Angeles, as it perfectly depicts the city during the decade. The story centers around thirteen-year-old Steve, played by Sunny Suljic , who spends his summer navigating between his chaotic home life and a group of new friends that he meets at a Motor Avenue skate shop.

Written and directed by well-known comedy actor Jonah Hill in his directorial debut , this A24 coming-of-age movie is not, by any means, a groundbreaking or life-changing one. However, Mid90s still provides audiences with an entertaining slice-of-life narrative that accurately incorporates 1990s elements — especially when it comes to 90s adolescence — with great results, managing to reproduce the magic and nostalgia that makes the decade such a beloved one for many.

3 'I, Tonya' (2017)

Director: craig gillespie.

Focusing on the real-life incident revolving around Tonya Harding , I, Tonya stars Margot Robbie in a career-defining performance that earned her her first and only (so far) Academy Award nomination. Craig Gillespie 's movie, which illustrates Harding's rise and fall as a competitive ice skater, is filmed in a well-crafted documentary-like style, with Robbie nailing the role. Sebastian Stan also stars, playing Harding's abusive ex-husband.

Like some other films mentioned here, I, Tonya helps illustrate an unforgettable event during the 1990s , detailing it with precision and providing audiences with an accurate illustration of the heartbreaking twist that happened in Harding's life, for which she suffered the consequences in the form of a three-year probation. While Robbie's performance is easily the standout in the film, I, Tonya is undoubtedly engaging.

2 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower' (2012)

Director: stephen chbosky.

Stephen Chbosky 's movie, based on the devastating novel of the same name also by Chbosky, stars Logan Lerman as a 15-year-old introvert who befriends his seniors and slowly learns how to cope with his friend's traumatizing suicide as well as his traumatic past. In the meantime, Charlie navigates through his life in high school and everything that encompasses.

Considering the sensitive themes it deals with, including trauma, abuse, and violence among others, The Perks of Being a Wallflower can be a triggering film, which is why viewer discretion is advised. Despite its at times sorrowful central coming-of-age tale , Chbosky's movie also provides audiences with a thoughtful and nostalgic in front of the screen, especially when looking at the pop-cultural 90s references it features .

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Watch on Fubo

1 'The Wolf of Wall Street' (2013)

Director: martin scorsese.

Although debatable, some would argue that The Wolf of Wall Street is Martin Scorsese 's best. This is not surprising considering the cult following it earned. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role, this 2013 movie tells the real-life story of Jordan Belfort , depicting his rise to a wealthy stockbroker living the high life to his ultimate fall involving crime, corruption, and the federal government.

The Wolf of Wall Street takes place during the late 1980s and early 1990s, perfectly capturing the lush life that would come for rich people at the time . It makes sense why audiences would be so drawn to Scorsese's epic, especially when considering all the stunning visuals it features on top of the astounding acting performances and the memorable story at its center.

Solar eclipse thrills crowds in California as it darkens swath of countryside

Bhavini Lad’s three children were so fired up to experience their first solar eclipse on Monday that standing in line to pick up protective eyewear at the California Institute of Technology campus was almost too much to bear.

The 7-year-old twins and their 5-year-old brother buzzed and jumped, chatting with people in the line around them. They spoke with great enthusiasm about their space-themed bedroom that features a replica solar system hanging from the ceiling.

“They love to learn about it because they have the stuff in their room,” said Lad, an aerospace engineer, adding that they’ve talked about how to view the phenomenon without risk of eye injury.

“You don’t look without the glasses because what will happen?” Lad asked her son.

He shouted his response: “You’ll get blind!”

Photos: Solar eclipse draws crowds of viewers in L.A. area

Millions of people across the U.S., including in Southern California, looked up at the sky to witness a rare total solar eclipse Monday.

April 8, 2024

The sense of excitement was mirrored in the rest of the crowd of roughly a thousand revelers, who donned protective eyewear to witness the scientific wonder of a partial solar eclipse at the athletic field near the Cahill Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics. It was just one of numerous eclipse-watching events, formal or otherwise, held Monday morning across the Southland.

Whereas more than a dozen states were able to experience a rare total solar eclipse, in which the moon completely blocks the face of the sun, viewers in Los Angeles saw the moon take a roughly 50% bite out of the bright mass.

Unlike elsewhere in the country, where cloudy skies risked spoiling the eclipse chasers’ view, it was a sunny, clear day in Los Angeles, with temperatures in the mid-70s. And because L.A. didn’t experience totality, the sky didn’t go dark and temperatures didn’t drop by several degrees, as they did for those places in the moon’s complete shadow.

In Los Angeles, it cooled slightly at the peak of the eclipse “because we were only receiving about half the energy from the sun,” said Kenneth E. Phillips, curator for aerospace science at the California Science Center.

Monday’s eclipse began over the South Pacific Ocean and moved diagonally across Mexico, the United States and Canada. More than 30 million Americans from Texas to Maine lived in the path of totality.

Monday’s celestial event was the last total solar eclipse that will be seen from the contiguous United States until 2044. Los Angeles will experience another partial solar eclipse in 2029, according to NASA.

World & Nation

A total eclipse is more than a spectacle. So I’m on the road to see it — again

Why would someone journey across the country to watch a total eclipse? Because it’s more than just an astronomical rarity: It may be the best show in the universe.

April 6, 2024

The buzz leading up to the total eclipse was significant, for both the scientific possibilities and the rarity.

“It’s an opportunity to see firsthand our place in the universe,” said Paul Robertson, an associate professor of physics and astronomy at UC Irvine. “We’re sitting on the surface of this rock that’s careening through space at a speed of 30 kilometers per second, and we’re doing this sort of gravitational dance with these other giant bodies.”

It’s not something that people often pause to think about, Robertson said.

Nancy Castellanos and her 5-year-old daughter, Camilla, sat on a striped picnic blanket outside the California Science Center with their eyes fixed on the sky.

Camilla smiled and pointed up to the sun, prompting her mother to remind her not to look up without her protective glasses. It was Camilla’s first eclipse and she wasn’t quite sure what to expect. They waited and watched as the moon moved in and out of partial sun-blocking position.

“It’s such a memorable event, especially for the children,” Castellanos, 39, said as Camilla cuddled in her lap. “She can remember this later on and watch the next one too.”

At Caltech, some families brought chairs and laid out blankets to relax and munch on snacks while they waited for the show to begin.

Ryan Rudes, a freshman at Caltech, skipped his math class to take photos of the eclipse, using a makeshift eclipse filter for his Canon T6 camera crafted from duct tape and lenses from his orange eclipse glasses. He had hoped to view the eclipse from Niagara Falls this year, but cloudy skies in the forecast for that region dashed his plans.

The crowd erupted in cheers as the eclipse reached its peak around 11:12 a.m. Some quickly began packing up their belongings to leave while others opted to wait in line to watch the eclipse begin its reverse journey through a large telescope set up on campus.

Science & Medicine

These scientists think an ‘awe’-some eclipse could help unite Americans in troubled times

Awe is a serious topic among psychologists, including one at UC Irvine investigating whether awe-inspiring solar eclipses can help unite Americans.

April 7, 2024

Across the region, people’s creativity and scientific prowess were on display.

Zak Graff, manager for Pasadena City College’s Center for the Arts, viewed the eclipse through a makeshift pinhole camera he made using a recycled Honey Nut Cheerios box and aluminum foil.

A few times kids ran up to Graff hoping to snag a bite of the cereal, but they left disappointed. The box was for science, not snacks.

Graff also brought a spaghetti strainer he used to filter sunlight. The light reflecting on people’s clothes mirrored the eclipse happening in the sky in dozens of little crescent shadows. “Super low tech but highly effective,” Graff said.

Dani Ortuño Gudiño, a photographer working on his master’s degree in media studies, lay on the ground on his back outside the California Science Center to watch the eclipse reach its peak. He held a pair of paper glasses up to the lens of his camera, a Sony Alpha 7 III. The result was a crisp, stunning photo of the moon overlapping with the sun. The visible part of the sun was in a crescent shape overhead.

Nearby, Dalton Cantor, 16, held his glasses against his face as he gazed up at the sky.

“My family and I decided to come here to experience something unique,” he said. “It’s powerful. It pauses everything you’re going through.”

Dalton lives near the Science Center and used to visit nearly every weekend when he was younger. He was excited to be there Monday with his mother and grandmother.

“It’s a rare opportunity,” said his grandmother, Ana Rodriguez. “We couldn’t miss it.”

Edwin Lopez took advantage of the moment of calm after the eclipse’s peak to meditate.

He sat cross-legged and placed his hands on his heart as he listened to an eclipse-themed guided meditation in his earbuds. Lopez traveled to Oregon for the 2017 eclipse and has been looking forward to witnessing the event again. He took slow, steady breaths with his eyes closed as the crowd around him began to thin.

“This meditation is about finding the light inside your heart and letting it radiate through you like fire,” he said. “The eclipse is a very special moment and I wanted to feel connected to it.”
