Wonderfully run tours for gay men. I took their 12 day tour of Spain which included Barcelona, Granada, Sevilla and Madrid. I enjoyed their helpful yet flexible format so much I'm planning my next tour with them. Unlike other group tours, you're not stuck on a bus and forced into their schedule. You can go with the group to popular locations or you can spend time on your own, or both! It's really the best of both worlds, having a reliable tour leader to take you to see the sites--as well as having all the free time you want to explore on your own. There's a walking tour of each city, and a list of the most popular sites. You choose what you want to do, and the tour leader creates a schedule so your interests don't conflict. You go to big attractions, like Gaudi's Sagrada Familia, as a group because they've arranged for tickets in advance (without which you can't get in). Our group leader, Dan, was always helpful, organized, kind, cheerful, always calm, and funny. He made sure we got to see what we wanted to see, either as a group or individually. The 14 gay guys on the trip were all good-natured and easy to get along with. As well as having a great format, Detours is also an excellent value as travel gets more expensive. You stay at lovely, centrally located hotels, with a buffet breakfast included to keep you going all day. The group meets for dinner which you can attend or not, as always, it's your choice. Transportation between cities on the tour are also included. It's a low stress, great fun way to discover the world with like-minded people.

Tim and I had an amazing time on our Detours trip to Costa Rica. This was our first time on an all-male trip, so we did not know what to expect. We have already registered for our second trip with Detours, so you know where this review is going. Everything leading up to the trip was handled with professionalism and ease by Detours. That same vibe continued once the trip started. Brandon, our trip leader, was high-energy, fun, kind, inclusive, organized, connected, and on top of his game. He did not miss a beat, all details were attended to, and he made the trip enjoyable for all. Clay was equally kind and fun, and we look forward to one of his guided trips in the future. Costa Rica is a beautiful country. We loved the variety of our locations (the beach, the mountains, the hot springs / Volcano). A little bit of everything was perfect. We participated in so many unforgettable activities (ziplining, Tarzan swing, ATV, white-water rafting, canyoneering, sunset cruises, beaches, waterfalls, pool parties, park tours, . . . ) that filled our days and brought us even closer to the group of guys we traveled with. The beauty is you get to choose your own adventure. Do it all, or do nothing, no pressure. If that is not enough, you get to experience it all with a diverse group of men from across the globe. The friendships and connections we made were easy even for introverts and heightened our positive experiences. We hope to continue these friendships in our future travels. If you are on the fence, get off. A Detours experience is worth it. Enjoy your trip!

He instantly wins everyone over with his amazing energetic, positive, humorous, welcoming, kind, warm, personality he knows his business inside and out nothing stumps him he always comes thru even after hours. What a beyond excellent representative for Detours Travel Bravo Brandon!!!!! The trip every detail looked after amazing transfers, hotels, restaurants, scheduled and extra tours offered ( no hard sell just suggestions you may want to pursue or not ) Any of my friends knows I am a tough demanding customer with high standards. I can honestly say all were met no complaints whatsoever ever I would go on another Detours adventure for sure maybe only travel this way from now on Two more things I will share: 1/ I had a little incident with an ATV vehicle no injury to me whatsoever Brandon managed me and was the go between with vendor keeping me informed with calming grace and figuring all out. 2/ before reaching our last destination Brandon shared there was problem with my room but assured me it would be handled as it was; when we reached hotel the management was amazing laid out the options which I agreed to - Amazing Property & Service. I rarely write reviews but I simply had to write one for Detours after returning from their Italy trip. Honestly, the way I found Detours is that I searched for “Gay tour Italy”. And while there were a number of tour groups offering trips to Italy, Detours had a trip that was closest to the dates I wanted to travel. So I booked the trip and hoped for the best! But I didn’t need to worry, and you won’t need to worry either if you book with them. My trip leaders ended up being Miles & Ollie and they were both knowledgeable, professional, helpful, friendly, entertaining, and adorable. They thought of every detail and even included some surprises along the way. I met some great people and made memories that will last a lifetime. I was genuinely sad when it was over. This trip actually meant a lot to me and thanks to Detours, it was everything I had hoped for and more. I can’t imagine booking with anyone else in the future. Now I just need to decide where to go next!

I just got home from 12 days in Spain with Brandon (and Clay in training)... this trip was nothing short of amazing. It was my first time to all of the locations on the trip. In real life, I like to be in control of everything... but on this trip, I handed it over to the most unflappable, kind, energetic, creative and outstanding team leader (Brandon) that anyone could wish for. There was not a T uncrossed or an I undotted... in the trip descriptions, it appears that you may have to figure out more than you actually do... if you want a trip where you can leave your brain at home, you can have it... if you want a lot of free time, you can do that too. You always have dinner companions, like minded excursion buddies and photographers if you want them. For purposes of anyone who might think they are too young or old, our age group ranged from 30 to early 60's (I am closer to the older side of that group lol), but it did not make a difference! I would say the trip gave me an opportunity to grow, reflect, energize and enjoy. It was truly one of those trips that make you feel even better about life when it was done. I truly cannot thank Brandon enough for his leadership... Clay for his partnership... and the many friends I made on this trip (you know who your are!)... I haven't laughed as much as I did in this trip in a long time... stop pondering whether you should book it, just do it... you will not regret it!

The 12-day tour of New Zealand was an absolute adventure from start to finish! From its vibrant cities to its breathtaking natural wonders, this tour showcased the best that this remarkable country has to offer. If there were an option for 10 stars, I would use it. This vacation was absolute perfection. We just returned from Peru with Brand g. It was by far the best tour we have ever taken. I have had the pleasure of joining Brand g on four cruises and have back-to-back cruises on the Rhine and Danube planned for this summer. Everything about these trips has been professional and first rate, and I’ve yet to have a bad experience. I can’t recommend Brand g highly enough.

The Prague / Danube River Cruise 2018 was my first trip with Brand G.  They made it so easy every step of the way — from the initial contact, to adding extra nights before/after the tour, to airport pick ups, and everything in between.  The MS Amadeus Silver II is a beautiful ship with a friendly and helpful crew.  The on-board meals were delicious.  The rooms were spacious.  The on-board entertainment was fantastic.  Jeff and Brian were incredibly attentive and jumped thru hoops to ensure that every passenger had an amazing experience.  I will not hesitate to book another trip with Brand G.

I have been on three Brand g trips, and they have all been fantastic, each in its own way. It started with Galapagos and Ecuador; followed by Greek Islands cruise, from Istanbul to Athens; and then Danube River cruise, starting in Prague and ending in Budapest. I can’t say enough about Jeff Gundvaldson and Brian Van Wey, the outstanding leaders of Brand g. They are incredibly attentive to detail, both before and during the trips. And I’m taking another trip with them in September!

We absolutely love Brand g! Everything is taken care of, from pick up at the airport to delivery back after your trip. You just need to do your own air travel, and they handled everything else! BRAVA ITALIA Naples ~ Capri ~ Amalfi Coast

May 22 - 30, 2025.

That’s us in the photo above during our last tour to the Amalfi Coast prior to the pandemic, with picturesque Positano in the background! This incredible tour includes Naples, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius, the Isle of Capri, Sorrento, and the Amalfi Coast. It is one of our most requested tours of all time, and we are thrilled to be offering it once again over the Memorial Day weekend next year. Naples and Surrounds

Our tour begins in the historic city of Naples, which boasts incredible museums and imposing buildings. Towering over the horizon is Mount Vesuvius which created the frozen-in-time museums of Pompeii and Herculaneum, which we visit in a full-day excursion from the city. You’ll want to arrive early to soak up more of the atmosphere of this city!

The Isle of Capri

A hydrofoil whisks us across the Gulf of Naples to the Isle of Capri. During the day it is full of short-term visitors, but we are staying for two nights so we experience an entirely different side of Capri. In the evening, after the last day-trippers leave, a kind of exclusive peace settles over the island as those who are privileged to be staying here emerge for their evening stroll, or to sip drinks on the famous square, the Piazzetta. The Amalfi Coast

Thrill to one of the world’s most scenic drives - the Amalfitana - passing between sea and mountains on a road carved out of the sheer rock. This coast was named on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage in 1997. We visit the towns of Ravello, Positano and Amalfi among others during our three-night stay among these amazing seaside towns. We return to Naples for our farewell festivities.

Toto Tours is celebrating its 35th Anniversary in 2025, and it has been my privilege to bring this company into existence and to share so many life-changing experiences with all of you over these decades. This passion for travel has been my true calling in life, but now I need to heed other calls from my family and friends and from my own body and spirit. I will be hanging up my Ruby Slippers at the conclusion of our final tour next year. Toto Tours may very well continue on, with me in an advisory role for a short time after that. Details are still being ironed out and I’ll keep you posted. The upcoming tours represent our best chance to say farewell to each other in person. I hope you will travel with me at least one more time before the end of next year. This decision feels absolutely right for me, and it brings me great peace of mind. I recognize the truth of impermanence - nothing lasts forever - and I want to exit gracefully while I still have my full faculties and so much more living to do. Please join me in celebrating the beauty of the full circle of life. The 15 safest countries for LGBTQ+ travelers this fall revealed

A recent study has ranked 203 countries based on their safety for LGBTQ + travelers. Luckily, their list features some of our all-time favorite ‘bucket list’ destinations .

The study looked at five key factors: the criminalization of LGBTQ+ relations; the criminalization of anti-LGBTQ+ violence; Gallup World Poll data measuring public attitudes; LGBTQ+ worker protections; and marriage equality.

Countries were rewarded or penalized for certain criteria. For example, countries with laws criminalizing same-sex sexual relations faced significant scoring penalties, while countries that criminalized hate-based acts of violence received a 50-point bonus.

The study was developed by MouseNotifier , a Disney dining alert software system.

What LGBTQ travelers need to know before visiting Turkey

Turkish summers are an attractive proposition, with the promise of white sandy beaches and boat parties providing the perfect summer escape.

But following the re-election of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as president last month, members of the LGBTQ community believe they are being sent a message that Turkey is not a country where they will be welcome.

At the end of May, President Erdoğan used his victory speech  to speak out against what he termed "LGBT forces." "In our culture, family is sacred; no one can interfere," he told supporters. "We will strangle anyone who dares to touch it." 

Here's everything LGBTQ+ travelers and their allies should know if considering a trip to Turkey . 

What's the situation with LGBTQ+ rights in Turkey?

Unlike many majority-Muslim nations , homosexuality is legal in Turkey, and despite political hate speech, tolerance is often the norm in urban areas like Istanbul . 

Still, Turkey scores low on the LGBTQ+ acceptance meter compared to the rest of Europe. In 2022, ILGA-Europe ranked Turkey 48 out of 49 countries regarding LGBTQ+ equality. The absence of support keeps many locals in the closet: several people living in Turkey chose not to speak or to give only their first names when interviewed for this piece. 

Erdoğan has said the LGBTQ+ community is "spreading like the plague," and Pride parades regularly lead to arrests. In 2015, police sprayed Istanbul Pride marchers with tear gas and water cannons . Last June, authorities detained over 300 Pride participants at events around the city. 

For Kaan, a Turkish-born gay man who grew up in the nation's capital and relocated to the Netherlands in March, a lack of LGBTQ+ protections is one of the main reasons he chose to leave his home country. He cites the right to marry and gender discrimination as two of his deciding factors. "Hidden governmental pressure to make LGBTQ+ people invisible on TV influenced my decision to move most," he says.

Mustafa Korkmaz, an Istanbul-based tourism professional who runs two sites dedicated to LGBTQ+ travel in Turkey  and identifies as gay, remains optimistic. "LGBTQ+ life is better than it was 20 years ago," he says. "Taksim, the neighborhood where I live in Istanbul, is sort of a gay ghetto," he says, using language that started to define urban gay enclaves in cities like San Francisco in the 1960s. "I have transgender neighbors. There are 10 LGBTQ+ bars nearby." 

What should LGBTQ+ tourists know while touring Turkey? 

Kaan and Mustafa believe Turkey is safe for LGBTQ+ travelers if they take certain precautions. "Same-sex couples can walk hand-in-hand, arm-in-arm," says Kaan – a common way Turkish men express friendship. But public displays of affection like kissing are "not in the country's culture, even for straight people." 

What's expected of locals only sometimes applies to tourists. "People in the travel industry are more liberally-minded, in general," says Mustafa, and it's unlikely they'll experience discrimination in hotels or on tours. Still, it's best to use discretion – particularly in small, conservative towns, where adopting a "don't ask, don't tell" policy about sexuality and gender can safeguard against hostility.

Kaan considers most major cities – Istanbul, Ankara , Izmir , Antalya , Eskisehir , and Bodrum – safe to visit, though there aren't many opportunities for LGBTQ+-oriented attractions outside of Istanbul. 

But even in Bodrum, which Mustafa likens to rainbow flag-flying Mykonos , it's possible to run into prejudice. In 2021, travel blogger Ben Schlappig reported that several local hotels would not allow two men to stay in the same room -  a policy that discriminates against gay couples. Travelers worried about a potential issue should call ahead before booking a stay. 

What considerations should travelers make before visiting an anti-LGBTQ+ destination?

Some LGBTQ+ rights advocates call for travel boycotts to nations like Turkey, arguing that tourist dollars shouldn't line the pockets of unwelcoming regimes. Others see LGBTQ+ visibility as a form of grassroots activism achieved by supporting progressive local businesses that build bridges toward acceptance. 

But before getting caught in the crosshairs of travel ideology, it's essential to consider personal comfort and safety. If you have an easy time passing as straight or cisgender, discrimination might not pose a threat. Likewise, if the physical expression of same-sex desire isn't necessary while traveling, local customs might not hinder your happiness.

Kaan has visited 39 countries and doesn't allow discrimination to stop him from seeing new destinations. Still, when it comes to personal pleasure, he prefers countries where he doesn't have to hide his sexuality. 

The amount of intolerance you're willing to accommodate in your itinerary, however, is entirely up to you.
