Passport Free Destinations

Currently, the only passport-free destination for Canadians is the United States through an air route. Because of the NEXUS program, Canadians have the opportunity to undergo pre-screening and, if they pass, benefit from expedited entrance. This is the only current agreement that Canada has for passport-free travel.

Another example of international passport-free travel is the Schengen Area , where citizens can travel, throughout member states, just like the South American Mercosur where citizens of member states can freely travel with just their national identification card.

Visa Free Destinations

Many destinations require only a Canadian passport for entry, making them visa-free destinations for Canadians . Other destinations only require an eTA (electronic travel authorization). No visa is needed, and there are even places where the visa is provided upon arrival.

To get all the facts straight, Canadian passport holders can travel to 115 destinations without a visa. Nonetheless, 52 destinations provide visas upon arrival, and 6 countries require an eTA. This places this travel document at position #4 and with access to 87% of the world.

14 Countries Canadian Passport Holders Can Visit For Up To 90 Days Without A Visa In 2024

Canada's passport was recently ranked among the strongest in the world. 🌍

A person holds a Canadian passport with a boarding pass. Right: A person stands on a platform next to a waterfall.

A Canadian passport. Right: A person stands next to a waterfall.

Dreaming of a getaway in 2024? If you have a Canadian passport , there are tons of countries across the globe that you can easily visit without needing to apply for a visa.

According to the 2024 Passport Index , Canada's passport is the seventh strongest in the world, allowing holders to visit a total of 117 countries visa-free.

While some countries only allow residents to stay for a certain amount of time without a visa, many countries offer stays of up to three months for Canadian passport holders.

Certain countries have made Canadians newly exempt from visa requirements in 2024.

From European hot spots to tropical getaways, here are 14 countries Canadians can travel to without a visa for up to 90 days in 2024.

See on Instagram

Turkiye has lifted its visa requirements for Canadian tourists hoping to visit the country for short stays.

A visa is now not required for Canadian passport holders visiting the country as a tourist for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Previously, Canadians would have had to pay US$60 to enter the country and would have a 180-day window to visit after being approved, according to CTV News .

Those travelling to the country for work, business, studying, or for the purposes of seeking medical treatment, still require a visa to enter the country, and should use the official Turkish government site to apply online and purchase an e-visa before entering, according to the Government of Canada .

Visa-exempt travel applies to stays of up to 90 days. If you wish to stay longer, you must obtain a residence permit from the Provincial Directorate of Migration Management in the province in which you reside, or risk being deported and banned from further travel.

If you want to qualify for a subsequent visa-exempted entry for a 90-day period in Turkiye, you must leave the country for at least 90 days before being allowed to re-enter for another 90 days.

Brazil has extended the exemption of visa requirements from Canadian travellers until April 10, 2024, meaning you can travel to the country visa-free until this date.

The new date was made official and published in the country's Federal Official Gazette on January 4. Previously, visa requirements were set to begin on January 10, 2024.

Brazil's government said the extension was made to avoid resuming visa requirements during the peak travel season, at the turning of the year.

Under the extension, Canadian passport holders do not need a visa for tourist visits of up to 90 days. Business visas for unpaid stays and student visas are also not required for stays of up to 90 days.

If you intend to stay more than 90 days in the country, you must obtain an extension from the Federal Police for a maximum stay of 180 days per period of 12 months, according to the Government of Canada .

Iceland is part of the Schengen area, a zone of 27 countries in the EU that have removed their internal borders and therefore have common entry and exit requirements.

With a Canadian passport, travellers can visit Iceland for up to 90 days without a visa in any 180-day period. This means that if you leave the Schengen area and return within the same 180-day period, the previous stay will count against the 90 days.

While Canadians don't need a visa, they will soon need to obtain an electronic travel authorization to visit Schengen Zone countries.

Starting in 2025, they'll need to have the European Travel Information and Authorization System or ETIAS, an entry requirement for visa-exempt nationals that's linked to a traveller's passport.

The ETIAS is valid for up to three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. The ETIAS was previously expected to come into effect in 2024, but was postponed until mid-2025 in October 2023. It's expected to cost about $10 once in effect.

Ireland is a member of the European Union, but it’s not part of the Schengen area, so Schengen-zone rules won't apply here.

Thankfully, Canadian passport holders can easily visit for stays of up to 90 days without a visa required.

This also means that the ETIAS won't be required for Canadians to travel to Ireland once it comes into effect.

If you plan to travel to Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, make sure you meet the entry/exit requirements for the U.K.

Canadians can head to Jamaica without a visa whether they're going as a tourist, for work or business, or as a student.

According to the Government of Canada , immigration officers in Jamaica will generally grant travellers visitor landed status for 90 days.

Details: Canadians can travel to Japan for up to 90 days as a tourist without a visa.

However, if you're heading to the country for business, to work, or as a student, you'll have to get the proper documentation.

It's worth noting that overstaying the time limit on travel in Japan (whether that's the 90-day limit, visa-free limit or other visa limit) is a criminal offence, and those who overstay could be subject to fines and deportation, as well as barred from re-entering Japan, according to the Canadian government .

Details: If it's not on it already, Spain and its iconic cities like Barcelona and Madrid definitely deserve a place on your travel bucket list, offering an incredible arts and culture scene, beautiful beaches and island paradises, and delicious food.

Like Iceland, Spain is a Schengen zone country, meaning Canadians don't need a visa to travel to Spain for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

According to the Government of Canada , Spanish customs officials may ask you to show a return or onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay.

The ETIAS will also apply to trips to Spain, once in effect.

Details: Whether your idea of the perfect vacation involves touring historical sites and cultural landmarks, or heading to pristine beaches, Portugal is a great place to escape to.

Sweden is a Schengen-area country, meaning Canadian citizens do not need a visa when travelling to Sweden for short stays.

Visa-free travel to the country applies to stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Business visas are also not required for Canadian passport holders travelling to the country, as are student resident permits for stays up to 90 days. However, work permits are required.

Customs officials may also ask you to show them a return or onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay.

Canadian citizens who are between 18 and 30 years old can work in Sweden through International Experience Canada and obtain a working holiday visa, provided they meet some other requirements.

Details: You can easily live out your Mamma Mia! dreams in Greece this year, no visa required.

Greece is part of the Schengen zone, so Canadians can visit the country for up to 90 days, visa-free.

Greece also doesn't require a visa for business stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period. However, if you're looking to spend some time working here, you could be better off taking advantage of the country's Digital Nomad Visa .

According to the Government of Canada , you'll want to make sure your passport is valid for at least three months beyond the date you expect to leave Greece.

Details: Italy is another country that's part of the Schengen Zone, meaning Canadians can visit without a visa for stays of up to 90 days.

According to the Government of Canada , while you don't need a visa for stays under 90 days, you do have to report your presence in the country.

"Commercial accommodations will generally file the declaration on your behalf, but you are responsible for making sure it's done," says the government website.

It says you can make sure this is done by having your Canadian passport stamped upon arrival.

New Zealand

Details: In New Zealand, you can experience Maori culture, enjoy incredible beaches and nature, and visit the home of Middle Earth.

Canadian travellers to the country can stay for up to 90 days as a tourist without a visa. However, if you're a student or you're travelling for business, a visa is required.

While tourists don't need a visa, they do need to get an electronic travel authority (called an NZeTA) online before their arrival.

The NZeTA costs NZ$17 (about CA$14) and is valid for two years.

Canadian passport holders can visit the land down under for stays of up to 90 days, no tourist visa required.

However, citizens entering the country without a visa will need to get an electronic travel authority (ETA) to visit, according to the Canadian government .

The ETA is an electronically stored authority for travel to Australia for short-term visits or business entry. It replaces the visa label or stamp in a passport and removes the need for application forms.

To apply for an ETA, you'll need to download the Australian ETA app, which is available in the Apple and Google Play store. It costs AU$20 (about CA$17) to use the app, according to Australia's Department of Home Affairs, but this is the only charge associated with the travel authority.

If you do not need a passport to go to Canada, what do you need?

If you are flying, you need a US passport book or NEXUS card . In the case you are crossing by land or water, you can present a passport card, or NEXUS card, as well as a passport book. This is all you need, as long as you are staying in Canada for fewer than 180 days and you do not have a criminal record.

Your driver’s license will not work to cross the border . A passport will work, but there are other options, too. If you are crossing into Canada from the US by land or sea, you can show a valid passport card. A NEXUS card will also work at 9 Canadian airports, 21 land border crossings, and 396 marine reporting centers.

If you are driving across the border , you will definitely need your driver’s license. If you are flying or sailing, bring your license in case you rent a car or drive another vehicle while in Canada. And if you want to go to a bar, a license or ID is much less cumbersome to carry than a passport book.

Can I travel to Canada with my US birth certificate?

No . You need to have a passport, passport card, or NEXUS card.

What is a birth certificate useful for?

A birth certificate is one acceptable proof of citizenship for getting a passport, passport card, or NEXUS card. However, it is not a valid proof of identity that will help you travel. Sometimes, however, it will work as proof of ID for children.

Canada ranked one of the most powerful passports in the world

Latest Videos

Assuming you can actually get your Canadian passport with all the  mail-in backlog , the blue and gold travel document certainly gets you places — 185 destinations to be precise.

Henley Passport Index, a London-based investment migration consulting company, ranks 199 passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa. The company uses data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

According to the latest Henley Global Mobility Report , the Canadian passport is the eighth most powerful passport in the world for the third year, with Canadians able to travel visa-free to 185 destinations. In comparison, the US passport is in seventh place, with Americans able to travel visa-free to 186 locations.

The Japanese passport remains in the top spot for the sixth consecutive year, granting citizens visa-free access to 193 destinations. By contrast, Afghanistan “remains firmly at the bottom of the Henley Passport Index” with a score of just 27. With 166 few visa-free access compared to Japan, the report notes that it’s “the widest global mobility gap in the index’s 18-year history.”

South Korea and Singapore share second place, each with visa-free access to 192 visa-free destinations. Although Asian countries dominate the top spots, the most impressive “passport strength” growth comes from the Middle East. The UAE passport, which was in the 64th spot in 2013 has risen swiftly up the ranks.

Along with Liechtenstein, it’s now the 15th most powerful passport with Emiratis able to travel visa-free to 178 destinations.

Canada ranked as the 8th best passport in the world.

Only 6% of the passports from around the world give their holders visa-free access to over 70% of the destinations around the world.

“For global citizens, a better measure of economic mobility and fiscal opportunity afforded by their passports is to look at the percentage share of global GDP accessible to them visa-free,” said Chairman of Henley & Partners Dr. Christian H. Kaelin. “Our latest research into how much global economic access each passport provides is a useful tool for investors and gives new insight into the ever-widening inequality and wealth disparity that defines our world.”

Here's the full ranking for all the passports.

Visa-free travel to Russia

Several countries now have bilateral agreements in place with the Russian Federation to allow visa-free travel to Russia for their citizens. Unfortunately, however, there is no indication that similar agreements will be reached with the EU, the US, or the UK any time soon.

If you are not a citizen of one of the countries below and do not hold a diplomatic passport, the only other way to visit the Russian Federation without a visa is on a cruise ship to St. Petersburg. This exemption allows you to stay in the city for up to 72 hours without a visa on the condition that you are sleeping on the ship and are accompanied at all times by a licensed tour guide. If your cruise calls in St. Petersburg for 48 or 72 hours, there are companies offering shore tours which include a day in Moscow.

The same visa-free regime is applied to passengers on ferries from Helsinki and Tallinn operated by the company St. Peter Line, although in the case of ferry passengers you need to book your own accommodation. Again, it is possible within the 72 hours to visit Moscow as well. You can find out more about visa-free tours to Moscow and St. Petersburg here .

Nationalities which can travel to Russia without visas are divided into four groups with different requirements and different limitations on length of stay for each group. Even if you do not need a visa to enter Russia, you will certainly need a passport valid for at least six months after the date of your proposed exit from Russia, and you may require other official documents. You will also, like all foreign travelers in Russia, still need to register with the Federal Migration Service upon arrival.

Citizens of the countries of the CIS (the Commonwealth of Independent States) are permitted to stay in the Russian Federation for up to 90 days without a visa.

Citizens of these countries are allowed to stay in the Russian Federation without a visa for up to 90 days in each 180-day period, provided they will not be involved in any commercial or work-related activities during their stay.

Citizens of the countries in this group can stay in the Russian Federation for up to 30 days without a visa. They are not entitled to work while in Russia.

Citizens of these Balkan countries can also stay in Russia without a visa for up to 30 days, but must also show tourist documents (tourist confirmation and tourist voucher) or an official invitation to immigration officials.

Grumble Grumble

The things that piss me off., how to get a tourist visa to travel to russia from canada.

I’m going to Moscow in a couple of months, and we bought the tickets a while ago. More recently I’ve randomly discovered that I need a visa to travel to Russia. I’m glad I know people who know these things, it would have been very annoying to arrive there and be told we’re not allowed in. I’d expect Expedia to warn me, but no I guess they don’t do that.

Anyway, now that I’ve gone through the process I can say it’s very straightforward if you know what to do, and if you don’t – it feels like an impossible bureaucratic mess. So here’s a tutorial for getting a visa to go to Russia if you’re looking to do that.

There is some information here and here if you read russian but the guidance there is inadequate.

You start by filling out this application for the consulate . You won’t yet have everything you need yet but it doesn’t hurt to start, you can resume the application later. If you manage to screw up massively – don’t worry, at the end of that application you have to print it out and take it to the office, so at this point a mistake is not something to worry about.

Here are parts of the application that may be confusing and how to deal with them:

If you had USSR or Russian nationality at some time

The first really annoying thing. For Canadian-only citizens this is not an issue. But if you were born in the USSR – you may run into a problem like I have. The problem is that quite likely you have no documents left whatsoever from that time, so the options they give you don’t work:

  • Prove that you’ve renounced your Russian citizenship: this proof may not exist if you left in the early 90s
  • Visa to Israel: only works if that’s where you went
  • Stamp in their passport saying… only works if you had a passport back then and still have it.

Neither of those worked for me. My parents went to Romania when I was 12, I had no passport, the romanians even replaced my birth certificate with a Romanian one. But it still says on my passport today that I was born in Moldova so I have to deal with this.

For me I chose “Yes” in answer to that question and for the details picked 01June1991: DISSOLUTION OF THE USSR. That’s the advice I was given at the Visa office. The only document I had to provide was the Landed Immigrant paper that was in my passport when I immigrated. Luckily I kept that even though I’m a citizen now.

Number of entries

You pick one. I don’t know what the point is in more than one but if that’s what you need – I can’t answer that question.

Date of entry into / exit from Russia

These have to match your actual dates. Mind that you may arrive on a different day than when you’re leaving. In the past visas were given out for a period of time unrelated to specific entrance/exit dates but that’s no longer the case.

Which institution you are going to visit?

This is the other annoying thing. The theory is that you’re going to use a russian travel agency for your trip and they will provide you with these numbers. But we weren’t going to use a travel agency – I speak russian and am perfectly able to find my way around – there’s plenty to see in Moscow without a pre-arranged tour.

But that’s not an option. Don’t worry, we’re not the only ones who ran into this. Basically what I did was look for hotels in the centre Moscow and several of them had “Visa Support” buttons. These take you to websites such as this one , where you pay approx. 35$ to get the paper you need for your visa. No other services are involved (hence the low price). After you pay for it (Credit Card via PayPal worked for me) you get the paper you need immediately in your email.

On that paper you have to find the reference number (it’s called reference number) and a confirmation number (top of the form on the left).

Medical insurance

I found a place online that said this is not needed for Canadian citizens, it’s mostly for people from the EU. Probably because they don’t have public health care systems in many of the EU countries.

Just in case though I put in one of my numbers from my Sunlife insurance from work.

Do you plan to stay anywhere (hotel, individual)

Doh, yes. You want to pick Hotel. If you pick Individual – I hear they have to go through hell on their end to get the paperwork done. Most likely you don’t need the hotel booked at this point. I didn’t but they said because we’re travelling with the whole family the consulate may ask for a reservation confirmation.

Education and work experience

I think the point of this is to figure out whether you’re planning to go to Russia to work or participate in some armed conflict. Make sure that you don’t and fill in the form appropriately. The details (addresses/phone numbers) don’t need to be precise.

Have you ever visited other countries in the past ten years?

Who the hell hasn’t? I put in one entry with a made-up date for the USA and one for Moldova. I don’t know how they expect me to figure out where I went when in the last 10 years.

That’s all the advice I have. Note that the people at the Visa office are actually quite nice and helpful, but they don’t answer their phone so you have to go there and talk to them. Note also that the visa office is just a processing centre – they don’t make any decisions. So ask them your questions, they’ll help you as best they can, but once your application is ready – it’s up to the guys at the consulate to decide.

And bring payment as cash or a money order, they don’t accept anything else there.
