Best Times To Visit Pensacola

The best time to visit Pensacola is between mid-September and October when both spring breakers and family vacationers have departed the city, leaving the beaches, attractions and restaurants devoid of peak season crowds. The weather is still moderate this time of year, and the risk of hurricanes wanes, too. The late fall and winter months of November through February are considered low season, with temperatures and room rates dropping. Heavy crowds of students and families swarm the city and its beaches in early spring and summer, peak season, to take advantage of the prime beach weather.

This Beautiful Florida City Has One of the Best Beaches in the Country, Great New Hotels, and a Bustling Downtown

Pensacola is putting the Florida panhandle on the map — with 40 miles of sugar-sand beaches, rich history and culture, and Blue Angels air shows twice a year.

Matt Kirouac is a travel writer with a passion for national parks. He’s a culinary school graduate and a recent transplant to Oklahoma City after two and a half years of RV living. He covers LGBTQIA+ travel, food, and all things Disney.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Best things to do, best restaurants, best nightlife, best shopping, best time to visit, how to get there, how to get around.

Visit Pensacola

On the western edge of Florida's panhandle, one underrated city offers an oasis of surprising history, a bucolic beachfront — among the best in the nation — and a culture-rich downtown. Welcome to Pensacola, a Florida city like no other, where the sugary-white beach shares turf with roaring Blue Angels aircraft, the oldest settlement in America, and a veritable gumbo of Southern flavors.

“We have exactly what you need in terms of sand and sun, and you get the best of both worlds from a sun and sand perspective here, but also a rich cultural experience,” said Sid Williams-Heath, executive director of the Pensacola Little Theatre . “I don’t think a lot of beach towns have both.”

Williams-Heath cited the city’s thriving food and arts scene, and a community that’s welcoming, progressive, and unpretentious. “There’s a sustainable nostalgia here,” he added. “You can have a very high-quality experience, but you can also put your hair down and your flip-flops on and have a very unpretentious trip as well.”

For Nicole Stacey, one of Pensacola’s 100,000 residents who serves as the curator for the city’s annual Foo Foo Festival , the locals make it special. “People know the Gulf Coast and they think they know the panhandle, but they come here and it’s like a breath of fresh air,” she explained. “It’s a beautiful beach city with a great downtown. The rest of the panhandle doesn’t really have that, and the people take so much pride from being here.”

Top 5 Can’t Miss

Hotel: In 2023, an abandoned church was converted into Lily Hall , a game-changing boutique with artful decor, an excellent restaurant, and Pensacola’s first speakeasy bar.

Restaurant: It’s contemporary American cuisine with a rigorously local and seasonal through line at George Bistro + Bar , an elegant dining staple — and date night requisite — famed for an ever-changing menu with dishes like Gulf grouper with brown butter–roasted spaghetti squash.

Thing to Do: Spanning miles of Santa Rosa Island, Pensacola Beach offers the kind of sugar-white sand that people imagine when they fantasize about Florida beaches.

Nightlife: Since 1967, Seville Quarter has been a downtown cornerstone for live music, dancing, and dueling pianos, in a sprawling, multiroom space reminiscent of New Orleans’ French Quarter.

Shopping: Open every Saturday year-round, Palafox Market is the foremost farmers’ market in the region, comprising myriad farmers and purveyors selling everything from local meat and cheese, to arts, crafts, antiques, and soaps.

Steven Gray

What was once a baptist church in the Old East Hill neighborhood has emerged as Lily Hall , a 15-room boutique hotel with a lofty, art-filled common area, a terrace, and some of the city’s most exciting new dining and drinking destinations. “Lily Hall is such a cute boutique place to stay,” Williams-Heath said. “And from a restaurant perspective, it’s stunning, too — visit Sister Hen for that speakeasy moment.”

Pensacola Beach Resort

Another new hotel entry, Pensacola Beach Resort is the only property on the beach with 800 feet of frontage on both the Gulf Coast and the sound of Little Sabine Bay. With water views from all 161 guest rooms, and a blue-green color scheme inspired by said water, it’s a quintessential coastal abode, complete with a sleek pool deck, a restaurant, and The Salty Rose pool bar — the latter of which is open to the public.

Hilton Pensacola Beach

Rising like a beacon over the beach, the towering Hilton Pensacola Beach hotel is mere steps from the surf and sand, outfitted with a vast pool deck and a hidden gem restaurant, Bonsai, serving some of the best sushi in town.

Oyster Bay Boutique Hotel

There isn’t a bad room in the house at Oyster Bay Boutique Hotel , an intimate, chic property downtown, where each of the rooms sports balconies and/or garden views, along with posh furnishings and decor inspired by Pensacola’s coastal environment.

Pensacola Beach

“I’d put our beach against any beach in the world,” said Stacey, who loves the free-access beach for its silky-smooth sand. “We have over 40 miles of it, and a lot of that is not developed on, so it doesn’t feel overcrowded. You can go be by yourself or be with hundreds of your newest friends.”

Historic Village

“We are America’s first settlement, and people don’t realize the history,” said Stacey of the fact that Pensacola was established in 1559 by Don Tristan de Luna, making it older than oft-cited St. Augustine. That history is on full display at Historic Pensacola Village , an 8.5-acre downtown district filled with of-the-era homes, museums, and interpreters clad in period garb.

Pensacola Little Theatre

A something-for-everyone playhouse at the heart of downtown’s cultural enclave, the Pensacola Little Theatre offers year-round events for all ages, from musicals to immersive theater experiences, in a volunteer-driven space that highlights inclusive and diverse programming.

Fort Pickens

A star attraction of Gulf Islands National Seashore, which encompasses thousands of acres of Florida coast, Fort Pickens is a maritime sentinel completed in 1834 to protect Pensacola Bay with an imposing five-bastioned behemoth of brick and cannon fire. Today, it’s open for guests to explore its myriad passageways and rooms, with a 360-degree view of the coast and bay from its roof.

National Naval Aviation Museum

In Pensacola, you’re just as likely to spot Blue Angels aircraft in the sky as pelicans. The iconic Navy squadron is based here, and best experienced at the National Naval Aviation Museum , where hundreds of aircraft are on display in the 350,000-square-feet of exhibits and 37 acres of grounds from which to watch the jets soar overhead. “Every time I see them, I get goosebumps,” said Stacey. “What they’re doing up in the air is unlike anything else you’ll see. People can go and sit on the flight-line and watch them, or if you don’t have that time, you can go to Fort Pickens and watch them from the National Seashore seashore.”

George Bistro + Bar

From husband-wife team George and Luba Lazi, two hospitality pros from Europe who came to Pensacola via New York City, George Bistro + Bar is where the “South of France meets The South,” according to the restaurant. Here, seasonal ingredients weave their way through a dynamic menu, from curried mussels to grilled lamb chops, in a setting that’s as comfy as it is convenient. “If you’re flying in, it’s quite literally right beside the airport,” Williams-Heath said of his favorite restaurant. “I always plan to squeeze in George Bistro by the airport, whether I’m coming or going.”

Carmen’s Lunch Bar & Tapas

A bustling taste of Europe in downtown Pensacola, Carmen’s Lunch Bar & Tapas is an afternoon-only hot spot that’s famed for its crab dishes, tapas, and especially for Williams-Heath, its soups. “For daytime, we are going to Carmen’s and sitting outside,” he said. “I don’t even need to know what her soup of the day is, I’m getting it every time.”

Brother Fox

Located on the ground floor of Lily Hall, Brother Fox is a wood-fired restaurant that fuses local ingredients with Spanish inspirations (indicative of the city’s Spanish origins). Chef Darian Hernandez, a Pensacola local, stokes the flames of a menu filled with char-broiled oysters, grilled catch of the day, sous-vide pork chops, and ember-baked cabbage.

Atlas Oyster House

Anchored on Seville Harbour Marina, Atlas Oyster House is an essential stop for local seafood — including bivalves served raw, Rockefeller, or fried. Newly reopened following a remodel, which included the addition of an ample outdoor dining area on the deck, executive chef Jason Hughes presides over a nautical menu that matches the maritime aesthetic, including clam pasta, lobster rolls, seared snapper, and sushi.

Union Public House

With a menu that runs the gamut from grouper corndogs to mushroom toast and molasses-cured smoked pork butt, Union Public House goes far beyond the call of pub duty downtown. “What Blake Rushing has done, it’s delicious and it’s amazing,” Stacey said of the restaurant’s chef. “He loves Pensacola and he lives here. He trained all over the world, but this is where he wanted to come back to.”

Joe Patti’s Seafood

The seafood source for the best restaurants in town, Joe Patti’s Seafood is an institution worth seeking. “While the restaurants are great, and you can have that experience in terms of culinary, you have to go to Joe Patti’s,” Williams-Heath suggested. “If you just want to see the most amazing array of local fresh-caught seafood in a very back-in-time mom-and-pop shop, it’ll give you that feel for that small-town market experience, which is fun.”

Seville Quarter

A longstanding fixture downtown, Seville Quarter has evolved since its founding in 1967 into a vast collective of adjoining bars, courtyards, and late-night entertainment, which spans from dueling pianos and billiards to a polished dance hall. The whole space has the look and feel of the French Quarter, right down to its signature beignets and Hurricane cocktails.

When Lily Hall opened in 2023, it brought the city its first speakeasy — a clandestine basement accessed via payphone. Inside, guests are met with an impossibly cozy nook of a bar, where soft candlelight illuminates a space bedecked with vintage books. Classic cocktails are the main bill of fare, along with interesting seasonal originals, and a curated wine selection.

The Cabaret

Pensacola’s marquee gay bar, The Cabaret is the reliable go-to for an inclusive dance scene and spirited drag shows, in a lofty space that surrounds a central bar with an attached sidewalk patio.

Vinyl Music Hall

A go-to for live entertainment, concerts, and events, Vinyl Music Hall is an expansive ballroom-style space with a food truck-equipped courtyard bar and an always-packed slate of shows, from Fleetwood Mac tribute performances to Matisyahu.

The Handlebar

A nightlife haunt since 1983, The Handlebar puts alternative and underground music front-and-center. While the space itself, clad in bricks and steel beams, feels historic, its state-of-the-art sound system provides an energizing soundtrack for a night on the dance floor.

Palafox Market

“No trip is complete without a stroll through Palafox Market,” Williams-Heath said of downtown’s year-round farmers market, held every Saturday on Palafox Street. “All of the local artisan cheeses and foods and juices, to local artists. Saturday is the day to go, because it just takes over.”

Blue Moon Antique Mall

A wonderland of vintage ephemera, Blue Moon Antique Mall is the oldest and largest of its kind in the area, home to a collection of eccentric creatives and crafty artisans. Here in this maze of trinkets, expect to find anything from a zebra-print booth and a chrome dining set to ornate lamps, funky sweatshirts, and lacquer room dividers.

Rusted Arrow Mercantile

A perennially popular stopover on downtown’s main Palafox drag, Rusted Arrow Mercantile is a modern-day general store teeming with gifts, accessories, decor, and seasonal goodies. The always-stylish shop has it all, from kitchenwares and art to stationary, dog toys, and mugs.

A locally owned boutique since 1967, Artesana bills itself as the “largest importer of wooden dinnerware in the Southeast.” Beyond wood, customers can find all manner of charming gifts and furnishings, including candles, pillows, cocktail books, and plenty of Pensacola-themed items, like puzzles and platters.

Bodacious Shops

Come for the lattes, and stay to peruse the shelves and samples at Bodacious Shops , a bi-level downtown staple that doubles as a cafe, kitchen store, olive oil shop, and chef’s kitchen for events and classes. On one side, you’ll find an array of infused olive oils to sample, while the second floor is fully stocked with cookbooks and esoteric kitchen wares.

While there’s never a bad time of year to visit Pensacola, one pro tip is to think beyond the summer months. “You think beach town, you think summertime, but at its best, it’s always early fall,” explained Williams-Heath, calling the end of October through November the “perfect weather in a perfect town.” Stacey also called October her favorite month in Pensacola. “The sunsets are incredible,” she said, while pointing to April as another optimal time. “There are kickoffs for our different festivals and events [in April], so there’s always something going on, and the weather is gorgeous.”

The Blue Angels perform their home shows in July and November, making this the only city in the country where they perform twice. Also held in November, the annual Foo Foo Festival has emerged as an epicenter of culture and art — a 12-day spree of theater, gallery pop-ups, parades, performances, and music that engulfs downtown.

Located on the western edge of the Florida panhandle, Pensacola is drivable from cities like New Orleans (200 miles), Atlanta (324 miles), Jacksonville (357 miles), and Orlando (450 miles). The easiest entry, however, is via Pensacola International Airport , a conveniently small hub with quick access to rental cars and the rest of the region.

Depending on how far you’d like to venture, it’s entirely possible to visit Pensacola via ride-shares alone. Uber and Lyft are both prevalent, while the Pensacola Bay City Ferry provides convenient — and scenic — access from downtown to both Pensacola Beach and Fort Pickens. The ferry operates morning through evening, all year-long, and tickets cost $18 for adults, $15 for active and retired military, $15 for seniors, $10 for people with disabilities, and $10 for children ages 3 to 17. Note that Pensacola Beach is actually a separate barrier island from downtown, about eight miles away, so ride-shares can tally up if you expect a lot of back-and-forth travel. Car rentals are abundant at the airport, and will also allow you to visit farther-out icons, like the Flora-Bama bar that straddles the Alabama state line on Perdido Key.

Round the World in 30 Days

Pensacola Beach is the True Gem of Florida’s Emerald Coast (Here’s Why)

Pensacola Beach White Sands Emerald Coast Florida

With sugar-white sands and calm turquoise seas, Pensacola Beach is an Emerald Coast gem with Caribbean-worthy beaches and sky-high entertainment.

I hesitate to write this post. Mostly for selfish reasons.

The thing is, I recently discovered the Gulf Coast paradise of Pensacola Beach Florida and I’m not entirely sure I want to share it.

But writing about beautiful travel destinations is what I do. So I feel duty-bound to enlighten beach lovers everywhere about this Emerald Coast Florida gem. Darn it.

I should start by saying that I grew up in Southwest Florida and I truly thought all Florida beaches looked like those in my hometown of Fort Myers. Nice enough, but nothing special.

Note: This post may contain affiliate links. If you choose to book through these links, I receive a small commission, which I will undoubtedly blow on more flights (it’s a vicious cycle).  All of this internet voodoo takes place at no additional cost to you.

I mean sure, I’ve been to Miami and I know their turquoise waters and white sand beaches are more Caribbean-like than Florida-like. But I thought that’s where the Caribbean comparisons ended with my former home state.

I was so wrong.

Fellow beach lovers, I give you…Florida’s Emerald Coast.

What is the Emerald Coast?

Nick-named for its sparkling, emerald-hued waters, this 100-mile stretch of Florida’s upper Gulf Coast includes Panama City, Destin, Fort Walton Beach, Navarre Beach, and Pensacola Beach (and all the smaller beach towns in between).

Why is the Emerald Coast sand so white?

Our my first visit to the area, I was stunned when I got my first look at the sand on Santa Rosa Island (home to Pensacola Beach and Navarre). It was so incredibly white and silky soft. Almost like baby powder.

Remarkably different from other Florida beaches and uniquely beautiful in a way I haven’t seen anywhere else in the world.

The secret, I later learned, is quartz.

Emerald Coast white sand quartz

Thousands of years ago, warming temperatures at the end of the last Ice Age eroded quartz from the Appalachian Mountains. Over time, these quartz particles traveled all the way down the Apalachicola River and flowed into the Gulf of Mexico.

Ultimately, these tiny crystals were deposited along today’s Emerald Coast and became the sugar-white sand that’s so smooth it actually squeaks when you walk on it.

But, hey, what do I know about beaches?

In the course of traveling around the world for the past 15 years, I’ve been fortunate to visit some of the world’s most amazing beaches.

Pensacola Beach things to Do Emerald Coast Florida

From Bora Bora , Seychelles , and the Maldives to Fiji , Australia , Greece , and Thailand . I’ve seen the top sandy shores the world has to offer on six continents (sorry, none worth mentioning from Antarctica !).

As a result of all this diligent, umbrella-drink research, I feel uniquely qualified to proclaim a terrific beach when I see one.

And Florida’s Emerald Coast has some pretty terrific beaches.

But is Pensacola Beach nice? Oh, it’s way better than nice, it’s spectacular.

best time to visit pensacola beach

Which is better, Destin or Pensacola beaches?

There’s no doubt that Destin is the most popular destination along the Emerald Coast.

Both Destin and Pensacola (and all of the Emerald Coast towns) feature the same gorgeous clear blue-green waters and silky-white sand. But Destin and Pensacola vary greatly in visitor density and traffic.

So the choice between Pensacola vs Destin really comes down to how you like to vacation.

After three in-depth visits to the Emerald Coast in the past two years, I have developed a clear favorite.

It’s Pensacola Beach. Here’s why.

3 Reasons Pensacola Beach is the Best Choice

There are a number of reasons Pensacola beaches won me over, these are just a few.

1. All the beaches, half the crowds

We first visited the area in December, during what’s considered “ low season .” Even then, I found the traffic in Destin mildly alarming for the off-season. We discovered on a later visit that it’s much worse in the summer. The same can be said for bustling Panama City.

Now, I could be alone here, but I generally prefer to avoid traffic jams on my carefree beach holidays.

Of course, to be fair, Navarre Beach is the sleepiest of them all with just a handful of hotels and restaurants and zero traffic. But for my money, Pensacola Beach has the ideal laid-back beach town vibe.

From small, locally-owned shops to just the right amount of restaurants and nightlife options.

Pensacola Beach Sunset Florida

Compared to the big box stores, mega-resorts, and mini-golf courses of Destin, Ft. Walton Beach, and Panama City, Pensacola beaches have the perfect balance of amenities and elbow room.

2. Wide Open Spaces

And speaking of elbow room…Pensacola Beach is book-ended by long stretches of protected Gulf Islands National Seashore. The Fort Pickens recreation area is to the west of town and the Santa Rosa area (including Opal Beach) is to the east.

Gulf Islands National Seashore Fort Pickens Pensacola

These two vast park areas are lined with stunning gulf seashore boasting endless options to find your own private spot on that sugary sand (good luck with that in Destin!). The protected areas also limit the possibility of further development so it’s unlikely Pensacola Beach will lose its small-town charm anytime soon.

3. The Navy’s Blue Angels

Sure, I could probably rave about Pensacola’s great restaurants or drone on about the picturesque beaches and all the cute dolphins swimming about.

But every other Emerald Coast Florida town has all of those things.

Know what they don’t have?

The Blue freaking Angels.

Officially known as the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the awe-inspiring Blue Angels call the Pensacola Bay area home. Pensacola Beach hosts an annual Blue Angels show every July and that’s about the only time you’ll find this town at truly max capacity.

Every November, they host their last show of the year over Naval Air Station Pensacola.

Blue Angels Pensacola Beach

But you don’t have to catch an air show to see these incredible pilots perform. They practice regularly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 11:30am from March to October. You can easily spot them from anywhere on the island but the best views are from the Fort Pickens recreation area at the western tip of the island.

Check the 2024 Blue Angels practice schedule here .

Tip:  You can also visit the  National Naval Aviation Museum .

We were lucky enough to catch Pensacola’s Blue Angels in action on our last visit and they are simply incredible to watch.

So those are my 3 top reasons Pensacola Beach is the perfect place for your next vacation.

Now, let’s start planning your trip!

Here’s everything else you need to know…like where to stay and all the best things to do!

What’s the best time of year to visit Pensacola Beach?

Unlike South Florida, which welcomes snowbirds in the winter months, the Emerald Coast’s high season starts in the spring and continues through early fall. The summer holiday weekends of Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day are peak times for visitors to the area.

Pensacola Beach downtown

In Pensacola, the annual Blue Angels Air Show (scheduled for July 10-13, 2024) is perhaps the most popular weekend of all.

Yet, according to the locals, September is the best month of the year to visit. With fewer crowds, plenty of sunshine, and a welcome break from the peak summer heat.

Where to stay in Pensacola Beach?

Like most Florida beach resort areas, the primary accommodation options in Pensacola Beach are hotels, resorts, or vacation rentals. If you’re staying in Pensacola Beach for a week or traveling with a large family, a vacation rental is a terrific option.

If you’re just planning a weekend getaway, a beachfront hotel is a perfect choice!

Here are a few of my favorite options for both:

Best Pensacola Beach Hotels & Resorts

Springhill Suites Pensacola Beach – Consistently rated as the top choice in the area, this property sits right on the gulf within easy walking distance to dining and shops. When it comes to value for the money, this hotel is my top pick.

The Pensacola Beach Resort – Formerly the Margaritaville Resort, this gulf-front, full-service resort is located on the quieter end of Pensacola Beach where you’ll find endless white sand along pristine beachfront.

The Tiki Bar by the pool still captures the essence of Margaritaville. And the Salty Rose Beach Bar is a great spot for live music. Splurge for an Ocean View room.

Hilton Pensacola Beach – Standard rooms are slightly smaller than the Springhill Suites but just by a smidge. Need more space for the family? Book the roomy Gulf View Queen Suite with bonus bunk beds (683 sqft).

Like the other hotels listed here, the Hilton features a large pool area right on the gulf and it’s a short stroll to shops and restaurants.

Holiday Inn Resort Pensacola Beach – While the pools at the other three hotels are lovely, the Holiday Inn Resort wins the prize for my favorite hotel pool in town. It’s hard to top a cascading waterfall, hot tubs, and a 250-foot lazy river. The only downside? Standard rooms are considerably smaller here, measuring just 325 sqft.

Best Pensacola Beach Condos & Vacation Rentals

1. Baywatch Condos – This is where we stayed on our most last visit. The Baywatch complex sits directly on Santa Rosa Sound (the bay side) and has both a pool and a sandy beach area with calm water for swimming.

These 2- bedroom units are a little on the cozy side at 764 sqft but comfortably sleep 4-6. Baywatch is located directly on the bay and some units even offer spectacular sunset views from the terrace.

Now that we’ve covered all the best places to stay, let’s talk about things to do on your Pensacola Beach vacation!

5 Awesome Things to Do in Pensacola Beach (if you can tear yourself away from the beach!)

Yes, in addition to pristine beaches, Pensacola Beach has all the usual Florida beach town attractions like Laguna’s Adventure Park , Fast Eddie’s Go-Kart tracks , and even mini golf.

But here are a few of my top local picks for history, natural beauty, and the best of Pensacola:

1. Ride the free trolley!

From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, three trolley cars run 7 days a week from 4:00pm-midnight. If you’re staying further down the beach from town, the trolley is the perfect way to roll into town for dinner in style.

Pensacola Beach Free Trolley

Trolley stops connect the entire beach area from the Portofino complex on the east side to the last condo complex on the west end. Wherever you are on the island, you’re not far from a trolley stop. You can check the latest schedule and live map here .

2. Fort Pickens

Located at the western end of Santa Rosa Island, the vast Fort Pickens recreation area features a discovery center, picnic areas, a campground, a fishing pier, and the swim-friendly waters of Langdon Beach.

But its most impressive asset is definitely the historic U.S. Military fortification.

Fort Pickens Military fortification Pensacola

Constructed in 1834 to defend Pensacola Bay and its Navy Yard from foreign attack, Fort Pickens has a rich history and is a fascinating place to explore.

Designed to look threatening from the sea, the fort’s five 40 ft walls were intended to support more than 200 cannons and unleash “ a ring of fire ” during a siege. The fort remained in use through 1947.

Blue Angels Fort Pickens Pensacola Beach

Don’t forget to check the Blue Angels practice schedule . The perfect time to visit Fort Pickens is when the Blues are flying. Not every practice is officially listed, though, so keep your eyes peeled any Tuesday or Wednesday (the last practice we watched was not on the schedule).

Park Entrance Pass Fees: $15 per person or $25 per car, one pass is good for up to 7 days at all Gulf Island National Seashore areas. For regular visitors, an annual pass is $45. Check current hours and additional park information here .

3. Joe Patti’s Seafood

This world-famous seafood market has been delighting seafood lovers for more than 75 years.

Founded by Captain Joe and Anna Patti in the early 1930s, the market earned a reputation for the highest quality fish at a fair price. You’ll find everything from Florida’s freshest gulf shrimp and grouper to northern specialties like lobster, swordfish, and salmon.

best time to visit pensacola beach

Today, the family-run store has expanded to include a gourmet deli, wine bar, and sushi shop. If you’re renting a condo and want to try your hand at cooking up some of Florida’s best fresh seafood, Joe Patti’s is a great place for one-stop-shopping.

Open daily, 8:00am – 6:00pm. Check Joe Patti’s current hours here .

Tip: Go early for the best catch of the day.

4. Footprints in the Sand Eco Trail

As you wander from shore to shore on Pensacola Beach, keep a sharp eye out for the 29 stops that make up the 8.5 mile Footprints in the Sand Eco Trail .

Each stop tells a different story about Pensacola’s unique island ecology. Learn how to spot the footprints left behind by the native birds, crabs, and turtles, or find out more about what kind of marine life you’ll spot in the water.

Sea Turtle Nest Pensacola Beach Florida

Read about the sea turtles that nest on the beautiful beaches of Pensacola in the spring or the bottlenose dolphins who make frequent appearances just offshore. The trail is a fun and educational experience for kids and adults alike.

Get more information and view the Eco Trail map here .

5. Downtown Pensacola

One more perk of Pensacola over the rest of the Emerald Coast is its charming and historic downtown.

Pensacola’s fascinating history began in 1559 with the arrival of Spanish sailor Don Tristan de Lun who founded the first European settlement in the New World. Over the next 450 years, the flags of Spain, Britain, France, the Confederacy, and the United States would fly over Pensacola earning it the nickname, the “ City of Five Flags.”

Today, Crepe Myrtle trees shade the brick sidewalks in the heart of downtown Pensacola. You’ll discover quaint shops, cafes, and restaurants ranging from fine dining to food trucks. Be sure not to miss the Living History Museum and Historic Pensacola Village while you’re in town.

Tip: I love a good Segway tour and one fun way to explore the history of Pensacola is with this 2-hour Segway Tour of Downtown Pensacola .

Best Pensacola Boat Trips & Tours

There aren’t many boat trips and tours offered around Pensacola Beach but there are a couple of really great ones worth mentioning. From dolphin cruises to water activities, here are the best tours in Pensacola.

Just in case you’re looking for even more fun things to do.

Here are 3 of my favorite Pensacola Beach Tours:

  • Night Glow Kayak Paddle Session in Pensacola Beach – The night glow kayaks are one of Pensacola’s newest and most popular activities. It’s a 45-minute paddle around the Bay in a see-through kayak illuminated with colorful LED lights. Each kayak seats two and the goal is to spot dolphins, stingrays, and fish as you paddle around. Sometimes you do, sometimes you don’t, but either way, it’s a fun family nighttime adventure.
  • Frisky Mermaid Public Dolphin + Sightseeing Cruise – To get out on the water and spot some dolphins, this is the top boat trip in Pensacola Beach. You’ll learn “ fin ” facts about Pensacola and have a “ mer-mazing ” time on this 90-minute boat trip.
  • Pensacola Beach Jolly Dolphin Cruise and Scenic Bay Tour – This is the other great dolphin and wildlife cruise in Pensacola. This one is a smaller, more comfortable vessel (a pontoon boat) with full shade so it’s great for smaller kids or anyone with limited mobility.

Pensacola Ferry Service (Spring/Summer 2024)

From March to October, the seasonal ferry service is a great way to go between downtown Pensacola and Pensacola Beach. The ferry operates on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The trip takes 50 minutes, adult tickets are $30 round-trip, and all-day parking is available free on both ends.

You can find more information on schedules and tickets on the Pensacola Bay Ferry site .

Tip: If you’re staying in Pensacola Beach, the ferry is a terrific way to explore the charming shops of downtown Pensacola without dealing with the usual beach traffic!

And just in case I missed anything, here are a few more common questions about Florida’s Emerald Coast:

What’s the best beach on the Emerald Coast?

The answer to that question depends on what you’re looking for.

If you’re in search of endless activities and entertainment (think mini-golf, attractions, shopping arcades, etc) on your beach vacation, Panama City or Destin could be the best choice for you.

If you don’t care much about restaurant options or activities and just want to lounge your days away on an empty, lovely beach, the quiet town of Navarre could be just right.

Pensacola vs Destin

Destin is considered the superstar of the region and has regularly taken top honors on the “ Best Beaches in Florida ” list. Its well-deserved fame is mostly due to incredibly clear waters.

But all that good press has led to wall-to-wall condo buildings and resorts along Destin’s powdery shores. Lots of available rooms equal lots of visitors.

How far is Pensacola from Destin?

The distance from Pensacola to Destin is just 43 miles and the drive takes just over an hour, depending on traffic. So why not just hop over to Pensacola instead?

So what are you waiting for?

Start planning your trip to pensacola florida..

18 miles of white-sand beaches lapped by a gentle turquoise gulf.

343 days of brilliant sunshine a year.

An average annual temperature of 75 degrees.

Epic sunset views from Santa Rosa Sound.

It’s all waiting for you in Pensacola Beach, the crown jewel of Florida’s Emerald Coast.

What’s The Best Time To Visit Pensacola, FL?

  • By Savanna Stanfield
  • February 2023
  • In Florida Travel

Pensacola is a quaint coastal town located on the Florida Panhandle. Spanish influences, a relaxing vibe, and a United States Navy military base draw in many visitors each year. But with so many activities and events bringing in crowds, many people wonder what the best time to visit Pensacola is? With a thorough look at weather conditions, temperatures, and events, here's everything you need to know.

The best time to visit Pensacola depends on what you're looking to get out of your trip. For the best weather, visit in May or June. But if you want fewer crowds, then September or October is the best time to visit.

Excessive crowds, hurricanes, rainy weather, and extreme heat are all elements that can make any vacation less than perfect. In this guide, you'll learn when the best time to visit Pensacola is if you want to avoid any of these elements and get the most out of your trip.

Beautiful sunset at the beach over Pensacola, Florida, What's The Best Time To Visit Pensacola, FL?

What is the Rainiest Month in Pensacola?

Being a coastal town, Pensacola is located near many beaches, including nearby Pensacola Beach. In addition, there are plenty of watersports, golf courses, and outdoor dining for you to enjoy.

As some people say, "A rainy day at the beach beats no day at the beach." But for others, rain can really put a damper on their plans. If your Pensacola vacation plans include spending extensive time outdoors, then the last thing you want is to be stuck indoors due to rain.

Being located in northern Florida, Pensacola is in a subtropical climate. That means that there's a chance you could see rain year-round. But with that being said, the summer months tend to be rainiest, particularly in July.

It's not uncommon to see a rain shower or even a storm every day starting in late May and running through September. However, the good news about summer rain showers in Florida is that a lot of them are short-lived. It could rain for 30 minutes and then be clear and sunny for the rest of the day.

When is the Driest Month in Pensacola?

Pensacola doesn't really have a definitive dry season. Some of the driest months tend to be October through December, as well as February and April. But of the dry months listed, visiting in April will give you the warmest temperatures and the best chance of seeing sunny weather.

When is Pensacola Beach Least Crowded?

best time to visit pensacola beach

For some people, the idea of a great vacation means that you don't have to deal with crowds. Shorter wait times at restaurants and attractions and that prime beach spot all lead people to want to visit places like Pensacola during the least busy time of year.

To avoid the crowds in Pensacola and Pensacola Beach, you will want to visit in the fall months of September and October. By this time, families who came in for spring break and summer vacation will have returned home.

By visiting during this time, you can still experience plenty of warm weather and sunny days. If you can be flexible with your trip plans, there are still a few warmer days in November as well where you can avoid crowds.

When is Pensacola Beach Most Crowded?

The United States Navy Blue Angels soaring above the sky doing some aerial performance

If you don't like to deal with crowds, then you don't want to visit Pensacola and Pensacola Beach during the summer months. In early May and June, crowds aren't bad, but you don't want to visit during the major summer holidays.

Memorial Day weekend, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekend in Pensacola are some of the busiest times of the year. But there is one event- the Blue Angels air show- that draws the biggest crowds to the Pensacola area.

The Blue Angels are a team of Navy pilots whose home base is in Pensacola, but they perform flight demonstrations all over the country. However, they always come home to Pensacola for a show around the second weekend in July.

The best spot to view the show from is Pensacola Beach, so the beach is pretty crowded during this particular weekend. In fact, there are so many people that come out to watch the show that the main public beach areas are standing room only. And that's if you can even find a spot at all. Of course, the beach clears out after the show, but that still leaves large crowds at hotels and restaurants.

The Blue Angels show is definitely a one-of-a-kind experience, but if you don't like crowds, you'll want to check out their show schedule and plan your trip around it.

What is Hurricane Season in Pensacola, Florida?

Pensacola sits on the Gulf of Mexico,  so the chance of a hurricane developing in the Atlantic Ocean is always a concern to visitors. It's important to know when hurricane season is so that you know whether or not to be flexible with your plans or change your trip altogether. The last thing you want is to go there and have to turn around and go back home.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, but the peak hurricane season in Florida is in August through October.  But just because those months are when hurricane season peaks, it doesn't mean that you'll definitely get caught in a hurricane during your trip.

However, it isn't uncommon for Pensacola to experience a tropical storm or hurricane weather at least once during the hurricane season. These storms can cause significant damage and injury, especially the closer you get to the beach.

Are There Advance Warnings for Hurricanes?

The good news is that hurricanes don't tend to sneak up as other summer storms do. The whole state of Florida keeps on top of hurricanes throughout the entire season because they are so common. You'll have at least a few days and sometimes even a week's warning of potential tropical storms or hurricanes before your trip.

The bad news is that if you don't postpone your trip because of a hurricane and decide to go anyway, then you may end up having to evacuate and go back home. Sometimes these evacuations are mandatory if the storm is severe enough. When evacuations happen, the highways can become quite crowded as everyone tries to leave.

No one wants to have to cancel the vacation that they've been waiting for. But they also don't want to go and end up having to leave, possibly losing money in the process. Unless you can be flexible with your plans to visit Pensacola, then you may not want to visit during peak hurricane season.

Does Pensacola Florida Get Tornadoes?

There is a chance that Pensacola could get tornadoes, as Florida is susceptible due to daily storms and hurricanes. With that being said, you're more likely to experience a tornado during late spring, when there are more storms, or during hurricane season in which tornadoes can form due to strong winds.

It's hard to plan a trip around tornados, but if you're concerned, then avoid visiting Pensacola during peak hurricane season, where the chance of tornados is higher.

Is It Warm Enough to Swim in Pensacola, Florida?

best time to visit pensacola beach

One of the main attractions in Pensacola is swimming at the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico and Pensacola Bay. Keep in mind that the temperature of the ocean will change with the seasons. The water will get warmer as temperatures rise, moving from spring into summer. With that being said, it is warm enough to swim in Pensacola from April to October.

However, the water will be warmer during the summer months around late May through early September when temperatures are warmer. Although you can swim in April and October, the water may still be a little chilly.

It's possible that you can catch a couple of warmer 70-80 degree days in March or November. You can beat the crowds, and the weather will be warm enough to swim, although the water may be cold. But the winter months of December through February are not a good time to swim in Pensacola, as both the water and air temperatures are too cold.

How Hot Does It Get in Pensacola, FL?

Big waves brewing over the beaches of Pensacola, Florida

On average, the temperature in Pensacola ranges from around 40 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter months to 90 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer months. Of course, there is always a chance for colder or warmer days.

January is the coldest month. But even in January, it is very rare for temperatures to drop below freezing. July is the hottest month, averaging around 90 degrees during the day. However, it can feel much hotter due to humidity which can cause the heat index to reach over 100 degrees.

The subtropical climate, beautiful beaches, and plethora of things to do bring many visitors to Pensacola, Florida each year. September is the best time to visit to avoid excessive heat and crowds, but it is hurricane season during that time. So unless you can be flexible with your plans, April and May are just as good, although they’ll be a little more crowded. Thanks for reading!

posted by James Brockbank on May 13, 2022 // last updated on May 13, 2022

Are you planning for a Florida beach vacation? Head to Pensacola.

It has the most pristine beaches, with some of them ranking among the best on the USA Today, the Travel Channel, and TripAdvisor.

More recently, the USA Today readers named Pensacola the best attraction in Florida .

Many travelers’ dilemma lies in choosing the best beach in Pensacola.

It has many beaches, each with unique features, making it challenging for first-time visitors to find the best. We’ve prepared a list of the best beaches in Pensacola to help you.

1. Gulf Islands National Seashore

2. opal beach, 3. casino beach, 4. perdido key beach, 5. quietwater beach, 6. pensacola dog beach east, 7. pensacola dog beach west, 8. navarre beach, 9. fort pickens, 10. park west beach, 11. big lagoon state park and beach, final thoughts.

best time to visit pensacola beach

Gulf Islands National Seashore should be your first stop if you’re a nature lover. It stretches 160 miles along the coast, making it the longest beach in Pensacola. It’s full of natural wonders, including coastal marshes, maritime forests, and scenic winding trails.

Outdoor enthusiasts may find hiking trails, visiting historical sites like Fort Barrancas and Fort Pickens, and fishing access points more exciting to explore. The historic Fort Barrancas is a true wonder as it was an active civil war fort. It was constructed in 1844 with up to six million bricks adding to the towering forts on the coast.

Since the beach is part of the National Park, you can join the tours and educational events. Check the upcoming events and the respective dates on the NPS site to plan accordingly.

Opal Beach is an excellent choice if you prefer quiet and serene beaches. It’s named after the 1995 hurricane, which damaged part of the Pensacola coast. The pristine beach stretches up to eight miles on Pensacola, between Casino Beach and Navarre Beach.

The shore isn’t as wide as other beaches, but it provides enough space for visitors to sunbathe, walk, and perform other beach activities. Its unique nature creates two sides of the beach for visitors to explore—the gulf and the bay sides.

The bayside of the beach is excellent for families as it provides enough shade and is calmer. However, it’s located a little further away from commercial developments, so you must pack lunch, snacks, and drinks .

On the other hand, the gulf side is perfect for those looking for an unobstructed view of the gulf’s coast. It’s characterized by powdery white sand and crystal clear waters stretching on the entire coast.

This beach’s unique location makes it an excellent spot for fishing, but you must bring your fishing gear. You’ll find special fish species like the red drum, pompano, and flounder, among others depending on the season.

Be sure to visit the Pavilion area, as it’s well equipped with amenities like showers, restrooms, and change areas.

best time to visit pensacola beach

Casino Beach remains a favorite spot for tourists visiting Pensacola. Its central location, large parking lot, and lively nature attract many people. The beach was once a casino (operating from 1931 to 1950), and its vibrant spirit lives on many years after its closure.

Visitors attend live concerts on the sandy shore while watching surfers perform their acrobatic theatrics on the waves. Casino Beach is also the best place to watch the Masterful Navy pilots showcase their aviation tricks during the annual celebration. Sometimes they fly above the water and soar into the air.

The beach is wide enough to accommodate as many travelers with their beach gear. You can head to the crystal-clear ocean for a quick swim in the shallow waters and if you’re not a good swimmer, rest assured, the lifeguards are always on alert.

The beach also has an assortment of restaurants and takeout places serving snacks and meals. If you can’t find your favorite dishes, head to Pensacola Beach Boardwalk. There are more eateries here, including the famous Flounders Chowder House .

best time to visit pensacola beach

If you’re looking for a more serene beach, Perdido Key Beach is a great pick. It has the best views of the Gulf waters and an abundance of wetlands and wildlife. You will come across unique animals like the pelicans, blue herons, and sandpipers on this beach.

Although the beach is underdeveloped, a few high-rise hotels, condo complexes, and a resort come in handy for visitors planning a vacation here. Perdido Key State Park and Gulf Island National Seashore take up the remaining part of the beach.

Here you’ll find access to other small beaches like the Johnson Beach, which stretches six miles to the once-famous Fort McRee.

The beach is rarely busy, allowing you to catch up on the latest bestseller without much disruption. However, you may need to bring your beach chairs, umbrellas, food, and beverages as there aren’t many restaurants and stores on the beach.

Although the beach is accessible year-round, the fall is the best time to visit Perdido Key beach. There are fewer crowds then, and the beach feels warm with cool breezes at night.

best time to visit pensacola beach

Like its name, the beach is pretty quiet and serene. It lacks the big waves evident on most beaches in Pensacola, probably due to its unique location. Quietwater Beach is tucked behind Pensacola’s boardwalk area, running from the Flounder’s restaurant to James P. Morgan Memorial Park.

The beach is remarkably flat, rarely crowded except for the live concerts at the iconic Shell. It’s the most prominent feature on the beach as various activities are held here. Artists hold art walks, concerts, and live entertainment here, with The Shell providing a stunning backdrop.

Quietwater Beach is also an excellent place for jet skiing , playing beach volleyball, and parasailing. You may also take your family out on a dolphin cruise or zip-lining. And if you get hungry, head to one of the restaurants or entertainment venues located a few steps from the beach for a quick snack or meal.

You don’t have to leave your four-legged friend behind when visiting the best beaches in Pensacola. It has two beaches designated for dogs—the Pensacola Dog Beach East and Pensacola Dog Beach West.

Pensacola Dog Beach East is located 4.5 miles east of Casino Beach and has a more extensive stretch of sand than Pensacola Dog Beach West. This means you can set up a beach umbrella and a beach chair for resting as your dog takes a dip into the water.

Pensacola Dog Beach East is also less crowded, but you’re bound to find a pet owner walking their dog. The water is pretty warm and shallow, making it perfect for dogs to swim.

best time to visit pensacola beach

This is another Pensacola beach you can bring your dog. It’s located 2.3 miles away from Casino Beach, near a range of accommodation options along Fort Pickens road. You’ll find a long boardwalk leading you to a vast ocean playground for dogs to play catch.

The shore also has white quartzite sands that dogs find interesting as they squeak when walking. Pensacola Dog Beach West also has an area designated for dogs characterized by a large crowd of dogs sniffing butts and playing games. The water here is also incredibly warm and shallow, making it safe for dogs to take a dip.

best time to visit pensacola beach

This is another great spot for visitors looking for deep relaxation on Pensacola beaches. It’s nestled between Santa Rosa Sound and tall oaks stretching eight miles of white powdery sand.

What stands out about this beach is the abundance of natural features on the eastern part of the beach. You’ll find Navarre Beach Park here, which has been preserved for years. It boasts 4,000 feet of pristine Gulf beach, offering spectacular views, not to mention the vast range of activities, including camping, fishing, and swimming.

The beach is also home to the longest pier in Florida, which measures 1500 feet. Locals come here to catch fish and enjoy the beautiful views of the Caribbean waters.

A visit to Navarre Beach isn’t complete without making a quick stop at the Sea Turtle Conservation Center . It’s home to the green sea turtle called Sweet Pea. Sweet Pea is the center’s latest entrant brought to replace the late Gigi. Be sure to head to Navarre Beach Marine Park if you love scuba diving or snorkeling to discover other underwater animal species.

best time to visit pensacola beach

If crowds and dogs aren’t your cup of tea, head to Fort Pickens beach . It’s located on the western part of Pensacola and is among the oldest beaches. Europeans constructed it in 1834 to protect the Pensacola Pass and Pensacola Bay, as the bay provided excellent anchorage for ships during the war.

Today Fort Pickens is a historical site perfect for day trips, picnics, or romantic dates. It also has a park, campgrounds, a museum, and boardwalks and is the best place to watch the sunset from.

Be sure to stop at the Discovery Center to learn about the fort’s history in detail and the surrounding wildlife and natural environment.

The entire coast has soft powdery sand and warm, crystal clear water, shallow enough for you and the kids to swim. However, since the beach is inside the Gulf Islands National Seashore, you may need to pay an admission fee to access it.

best time to visit pensacola beach

This beach is one of the few Pensacola beaches offering public access before entering the Gulf Island National Seashore. The beauty of Park West Beach is that you never fall short of things to do.

The quiet waters allow you to fish and go paddle boarding and kayaking, but if you prefer calmer activities, go for a picnic at the pavilion. The beach has two pavilions, each with picnic tables and a pirate ship for kids to play. There’s also a colorful box of beach toys for those who forget to carry beach essentials like buckets and plastic shovels.

If visiting with friends, head to the gulf side of the beach. It’s a great spot for barbeque, and the large pavilions provide adequate shade. There are picnic tables too, so you don’t have to bring yours.

best time to visit pensacola beach

This is another family-friendly beach in Pensacola, Florida. Big Lagoon State Park sits on a vast 705 acres of land and is full of fun activities. The shallow bay and water make it safe for kids to swim, but join other tourists in one guided tour if you don’t want to get wet. There are many nature trails to explore and stargazing events to keep you entertained after sunset.

With our list of the best beaches in Pensacola, planning a vacation in Florida shouldn’t be nerve-wracking. The beaches are full of fun activities for both kids and adults. Whether you want to sunbathe at the calm Opal Beach, visit historical sites like Fort Pickens, or explore nature trails at Big Lagoon State Park, you can never run out of things to do here.

best time to visit pensacola beach

Each spring, signs cautioning motorists to slow down and be on the lookout for shorebirds line roads along Pensacola Beach.

During nesting season , driving slowly is important to avoid hitting newly hatched chicks.

Want to learn more about Pensacola Beach’s shorebirds? Here’s everything to get started.

What are shorebirds?

The term shorebird was given to a group of small birds usually found wandering around shorelines where they forage for food and nest.

There are about 210 species of shorebirds around the world, but the birds that call Pensacola Beach home are a smaller group.

Most popular shorebirds at Pensacola Beach

Least terns

Least terns  migrate all the way from South America to breed along Pensacola Beach, though they are known to fly up the Atlantic Coast as far north as Maine.

The National Park Service says that least terns come to the national seashore to nest in colonies, though they sometimes nest in isolated pairs, as well.

Courtship involves the presentation of food or food-life objects to a female along with a variety of posture and vocalizations.

Least terns are the smallest of terns, measuring around 8 to 9 inches in most cases. They have a signature black “crown” on their head and a snowy white underside and forehead.

Snowy plovers

Snow plovers  are small, snowy white shorebirds that can be easy to miss as they blend right in with Pensacola Beach’s sandy white shores. These little guys eat clams, crabs, sand hoppers, seeds and marine worms, according to the NPS.

Many plovers protect their nests using displays to distract curious onlookers. When a parent snowy plover thinks its nest is in danger, it will intentionally attract an intruder’s attention to lure it away from the nest.

Young, snowy plovers typically leave their nest within three hours of hatching.

Wilson’s plovers

Wilson's plovers migrate to Pensacola Beach from South Florida. They're slightly larger than their relatives, and have moderately long legs, brown backs and white underparts.

These plovers come to Pensacola Beach in either pairs or loose colonies, according to NPS. In courtship, the male makes multiple nest-scrapes and the female choses one. Nests are extremely hard to see, which wilson's plovers use as a defense mechanism.

Black skimmers

Black skimmers are common birds found around Pensacola Beach. These can be identified by their thin bill, which has an orange base and black tip.

These birds are monogamous, so they mate with the same partner each season. They nest in colonies close to the water. They lay their eggs in the sand, which attracts predators like seagulls and raccoons. Human activity can also disturb nests.

Female black skimmers typically lay between four and five eggs at a time, and their black spots can identify them. Partners take turns incubating the eggs, which hatch between 22 and 24 days.

Shorebird safety tips

  • Slow down while driving during nesting season, which lasts from March through August. Adult birds and their tiny chicks are sometimes hit by vehicles as they wander onto or fly across roadways.
  • Never chase shorebirds that are on the beach. Forcing them to run or fly compels them to use valuable energy needed for nesting. Unattended eggs and chicks are vulnerable to the sun’s heat or to predators nearby, watching and waiting for a snack.
  • Pay attention to all posted shorebird/seabird signs and roped off areas. Use designated walkways when available so you don’t disturb the birds and their families.
  • Dogs are only allowed within the designated dog beach areas and must remain on leash.
  • Do not fly kites, throw balls or explode fireworks near areas where birds may be nesting because they are frightening when airborne and tend to crash in unpredictable places at unpredictable times.
  • Keep your distance from nesting birds. If you notice birds squawking and dive-bombing you, it's probably a sign that you're too close. A general rule is to stay at least 100 yards away from a nest. If you are being dive-bombed, retreat by slowly retracing your steps – and watch where you put your feet.
  • Leave only your footprints behind. Please keep the beach clean (even if this means you are picking up after someone else) and do not feed wildlife. Beach litter endangers wildlife and food scraps are smelly and both attract predators that then will prey on shorebird chicks or eggs.

The 15 Best Beaches In The South, According To Our Readers

best time to visit pensacola beach

Southerners are opinionated about a lot of things. The proper way to make sweet tea , the importance of thank-you notes , and which college football teams are worth cheering on—just to name a few. In the summer, we mostly agree that the best place to vacation is at the beach. Sun, sand, and surf are universally loved, but that doesn’t mean we all agree on the best place to find the time-honored trifecta. We’ve certainly got our opinions on top Southern beaches, which means y’all undoubtedly do too. What are the best beaches in the South? Well, the jury’s still—and may always be—out. However, we were interested in what y’all had to say. So, we asked, and you answered. These are the 15 best beaches in the South, according to our readers (in no particular order).

Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, Alabama

Lots of folks sang the praises of Alabama’s Gulf Coast and particularly its twin towns of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. These 32 miles of sugary sand beaches and docile Gulf of Mexico waves captured our readers hearts. The beaches’ family friendly amenities were a big draw too.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

While this area technically encompasses more than 10 beaches—including popular spots like Hatteras, Nags Head , Kitty Hawk, and Duck —readers agreed that this stretch of barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina has that special something.

Folly Beach, South Carolina

We know our readers love Charleston (it’s been named the South’s Best City more times that we can count), so it’s only fitting that its salty next-door neighbor of Folly Beach is also a favorite haunt for our crowd. Just 12 miles from the Holy City, you get all the Lowcountry charm with none of the big-city fuss.

Sanibel Island, Florida

Nicknamed America’s Shelling Capital, it’s easy to see why folks fall in love with this Florida community so easily. Nearly 70% of the barrier island is protected, meaning visitors can still enjoy a secluded, natural escape without the overdevelopment so many other oceanfront communities face.

NC Brunswick Islands

Snuggled between bigger coastal destinations like Wilmington and Myrtle Beach, Oak Island eight miles of beaches are a family friendly escape with the perfect balance of things to do and places to unplug.

Kiawah Island, South Carolina

Another barrier island beach town, Kiawah Island is bound by the Kiawah River on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. Regular public roasts and 30 miles of paved bike trails give this Lowcountry gem that extra edge.

Pensacola, Florida

The farthest west of Florida’s beloved panhandle beaches, Pensacola is known for its gorgeous, crystal-clear turquoise water and snow-white sand. That’s about all it needs to draw plenty of faithful visitors, but its excellent restaurants and bi-weekly Blue Angels air shows only add to its draw.

North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Thirty minutes up the coast from ever-popular Myrtle Beach is an entirely different beach destination with a style all its own. While we’re all familiar with the Grand Strand capital, it’s less-flashy neighbor to the north has lots of the same appeal with far fewer crowds.

Isle of Palms, South Carolina

People have been flocking to this seven-by-one-mile island on the South Carolina coast since the early ‘70s, and our impromptu reader poll proves the destination has staying power. Wild Dunes Resort and The Windjammer are a couple classic Isle of Palms spots that don’t seem to be going out of style any time soon.

Destin, Florida

It’d be hard to overstate the enthusiasm with which our readers recommended this Panhandle beach town on Florida’s Emerald Coast. Nicknamed the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village,” the destination has grown far beyond village status now. But you can still find old-school charm and plenty of long-loved businesses and stays there today.

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Often topping our South’s Best polls for favorite beach towns and islands, our readers have yet to grow numb to Hilton Head’s charms. There’s excellent golf, beach paths galore, plus top-notch shopping and dining to be found here. The 12 miles of wide, public beaches are just the cherry on top.

Anna Maria Island, Florida

This surpassingly quaint island community successfully resisted the draw of high-rise condos. Its three towns of Anna Maria, Bradenton, and Holmes Beach provide all the excitement—by way of eclectic boutiques, local restaurants, and cozy cottage stays—one could need.

Tybee Island, Georgia

The coastal kin to another of our readers’ favorite Southern cities, Tybee Island is sometimes simply referred to as Savannah’s Beach. But the barrier island is much more than that. Visitors get the full experience by climbing the Tybee Island Lighthouse, searching for dolphins, and taking a charter to wild and uninhabited Little Tybee Island.

Edisto Island, South Carolina

Getty Images

South Carolina beaches may have won popularity vote. Edisto’s rich history, beautiful landscapes, and small-town sensibilities are right up our readers’ alleys. So it’s no wonder they recommended the sparsely populated barrier island with such gusto.

St. George Island, Florida

Located in an area that’s sometimes referred to as Florida’s Forgotten Coast, those who have visited may beg to differ about this place’s ability to be forgotten. Serenity, seclusion, and character-filled seafood shacks are the calling cards for this surprisingly vibrant beach destination.
