Do you see yourself riding a cable car over the beaches of Rio de Janeiro or aboard a boat on the Amazon River? Maybe you’re taking an urban approach in the megalopolis of São Paulo , venturing into the northeast's coastal deserts, or traveling all the way to the country’s edge to gawk at the massive Iguaçu Falls , the world’s largest waterfall system on the border of Brazil and Argentina.

Home to diverse climates and seasons, you’ll need to cross-check your dream destination in Brazil with the usual weather patterns to have the best chances of sun.

However, if it's one of the country’s iconic events you hope to attend, you can trust that rain or shine, nobody parties like Brazilians. Whether you prefer to dodge the crowds by traveling in the low season or dive head-first into the exuberant frenzy of Carnaval , these are the best times to visit Brazil.

October and November are best for good weather and no crowds

You might think Brazil is always warm, but some regions can get quite wet and chilly if you go in the middle of the year.

To get the best weather – while avoiding the crowds who fill up the beaches once kids are out of school in the peak season – you should visit Brazil in either October or November.

December to March is the peak season for beach days

For travelers crossing the equator to get to Brazil, remember that the seasons in Brazil are flipped. So if you want summertime weather, you should arrive between December and March.

With over 6400km (4000 miles) of coastline, you have plenty of beaches to choose from , but those surrounding Rio de Janeiro are typically crowded with foreign tourists and Brazilian vacationers.

You could travel further north to the city of Bahia , home to a deep Afro-Brazilian history worth experiencing first-hand, or up to the northeastern state of Ceara, which shows off its own unique Nordeste culture amid a backdrop of otherworldly sand dunes. These northern regions tend to be hotter, so expect to find average high temperatures between 87°F and 90°F in the summer.

If you like the summer weather but not the extreme heat of the northern regions, you’ll find beautiful beaches down south in Florianópolis – a coastal city located on a large island. Beaches here are plentiful, long, and sandy, while summer temperatures range between 81°F and 84°F.

February or March is best for Carnaval fans

Brazil’s Carnaval dates depend on the religious calendar, always preceding the week before the Catholic holiday of Ash Wednesday. The week-long festivities are sometimes in February or early March.

Rio’s Carnaval is the most famous in all of Brazil, but no matter where you end up you can find local celebrations, usually with their own spin on the big festa .

There’s a lot of excitement leading up to Carnaval week, so consider an early arrival to enjoy the buzz as each city prepares to break out into song and dance while drenched in color.

Expect higher prices across the board from airline tickets to accommodations. And there will be people everywhere .

Celebrate Brazilian Christmas and New Year’s Eve between December and January

In Brazil, Santa Claus (or Papai Noel) wears Havaianas . The country’s warm weather in December means that Brazilians typically celebrate the holiday season with churrasco (grilled meat) on the beach or at least by the pool.

At this time, kids are also off school for their summer vacation so the big vacation spots tend to be more crowded.

You’ll need to get yourself to the nearest beach to celebrate Brazil’s favorite New Year’s Eve tradition. At midnight, people run into the sea to jump over seven waves, making a wish on each as fireworks illuminate the sky above.

Between July and December, visit the Amazon during its (relatively) dry season

In a place as dense and mysterious as the Amazon , you want to have the weather on your side. The best time to visit the Amazon is during the dry season between July and December, which is when hiking trails are more accessible and low water levels work in the traveler’s favor.

However, don’t be fooled by the “dry” in dry season. This is still the world’s largest rainforest and rainfall here is constant, dry season or not. Conditions at this time just happen to be preferable over the wet season, when heavier rains can pose dangerous conditions.

Between May and September, avoid the crowds during the low season

During Brazil’s winter, the beach crowds are gone but the weather tends to be a bit more damp and cloudy in the southern regions.

Except for July – when many kids have another month off from school and families take time away – you will find better rates at hotels on the beaches, but it may be too cold to enjoy a swim and sun tan.

If you do travel during the low season, consider a northern destination that’s warm all year round so you can still benefit from the low-season slowdown.

Brazil has a warm, tropical climate  with hardly any difference in temperatures throughout the year so you can visit Brazil at any time of the year.

Climate in Southern Brazil

The climate here ranges from subtropical to temperate. As you travel southwards during your Brazil trip, the difference between seasons becomes more pronounced. Brazil experiences winter between May and September with temperatures of around 20°C during the daytime. In the summer months between November and March, the temperature rises above 30. The southern coast of Brazil boasts the most beautiful beaches and wonderfully warm water throughout the year. The water at the southernmost tip of Brazil is too cold for swimming between the months of June to September.

Climate in the Amazon Basin of Brazil

Although it rains throughout the year in the Amazon Basin, the dry months of April to September are the best time to visit Brazil’s rainforest, with only short bursts of rainfall at a time. 

What to Pack

South America is an enormous continent and there are several different types of landscapes, and the climatic zones will vary greatly on your trip. The weather varies by country, region and season. When traveling to Brazil, here are a few items you must carry: Lightweight rain and wind jacket (especially from Dec to Mar), comfortable shoes, swimsuit, sandals, beachwear, sunglasses, hat and sunscreen and mosquito repellent. But largely, don’t worry about a dress code! South America is generally very relaxed; you might want to pack something fancier for a night out but only five-star hotels and a few restaurants actually expect some sort of etiquette in the evening.

Average temperatures in Brazil vary very little. Considering humidity, temperatures feel hot for about half of the year and otherwise nice with a very low chance of rain throughout the year. The area is somewhat temperate — in the 51st percentile for pleasant weather — compared to tourist destinations worldwide. Weeks with ideal weather are listed above . These Are the Best Times to Visit Brazil

Sun, sand and caipirinhas to a samba soundtrack: Fun seekers can enjoy sultry weather and tropical beaches year-round in Brazil, South America's biggest country (and the fifth-largest on Earth), depending on which area you visit. Rio de Janeiro should be on every traveler's bucket list for its distinct tropical landscape, Christ the Redeemer statue (one of the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World, no less) and its legendary Carnival, but Brazil doesn't start and end in the Cidade Maravilhosa, or Marvelous City.

Sophisticated São Paulo, for example, is a hub for culture vultures, modern architecture fans and foodies, while Foz do Iguaçu is home to the breathtaking waterfalls shared with neighboring Argentina.

Best of all, starting June 17, Brazil is officially waiving visa requirements for citizens of the US, Canada, Australia and Japan. So if Brazil is at the top of your travel to-do list, it's time to start planning a trip.

The Best Times to Visit Rio de Janeiro

It's basically summer all year long in tropical Rio, given that the average winter daytime temperature is 82 degrees Fahrenheit; visit any time to soak up Brazilian beach action (though Rio's carioca residents might find that chilly and will be wearing woolen sweaters). Party lovers should live the Carnival experience in February at least once, though New Year's Eve is equally fun-packed. For a lighter dose of blocos (street parties) and parades, soak up some pre-Carnival ambience, when the city starts cranking up the good times, but with smaller crowds.

The Best Times to Visit São Paulo

Brazil's largest urban jungle, São Paulo is more seasonal, at least in contrast with Rio de Janeiro. Known as Sampa (and also unfortunately as the Land of Drizzle), this southern hemisphere city tucked slightly inland is best enjoyed in spring and autumn, though it rains less between April and August. There's plenty to keep residents and visitors entertained year round, from 100 museums such as the Museum of Art of São Paulo (MASP) to the International Art Festival of São Paulo , São Paulo Fashion Week and a diverse food scene.

The Best Times to Visit Foz do Iguaçu

Tropical Iguaçu National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — delivers varying degrees of humidity year round, with summer (December to March) packing the most intense mugginess. Summer is also rainy season, which actually has a positive spin: Water levels are higher in the park, meaning more H20 across the 275 falls, though trails will be muddier. Late March and April are a good time to visit, with fewer downpours, as are August and September.

Undisputedly the world's biggest party, Carnival takes place ahead of Lent, 40 days before Easter. This is when the black, white and red sidewalks of Copacabana and other neighborhoods are packed with blocos , and revelers sporting tutus, wigs and glitter dance next to the ocean. In Rio for the New Year? Head to the beaches of Leblon, Ipanema and Copacabana with white roses as an offering to Iemenjá, a sea goddess from the Umbanda faith, on Dec. 31. The tropical city also hosts the biannual Rock in Rio concert; the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pink, Iron Maiden and Foo Fighters will headline the 2019 edition which runs from Sept. 27 through Oct. 10.

And, while architecture might not be the first word you associate with Rio, the Marvelous City has been selected as UNESCO's first World Capital of Architecture for 2020.

This mega metropolis has 12 million Paulistas to keep entertained, so it's alive and kicking year round. Like any good Brazilian city, São Paulo hosts its own Carnival, while Pride is one of the biggest LGBT parades in the world and takes place in either May or June. (In 2019, the Pride Parade will take place on June 23.) The Museu de Arte Moderna (Modern Art Museum) hosts the world-class Art Biennial, the second-oldest after Venice; the 34th edition takes place in March 2020. The city also hosts Brazil's F1 Grand Prix, this year between Nov. 15 and 17.

Foz do Iguaçu

Given that the falls are the greatest attraction in Iguaçu, the city isn't exactly swarming with events. Do, however, visit the Argentine side of the falls for a different panorama (while racking up another visa stamp). Puerto Iguazú over in Argentina notches up the 10th edition of Iguazú en Concierto, a series of live music concerts, this June.

Other Events in Brazil

Brazil has particularly strong German roots, especially in the south of the country. Oktoberfest is the perfect fit for fun-loving Brazilians keen to dress up in lederhosen and knock back cerveja (beers); the city of Blumenau hosts the biggest such gathering.

The Best Times to See Wildlife in Brazil

Brazil is one of the world's most biodiverse countries, and Iguaçu National Park holds up its end of the deal: It's home to 2,000 avian, fauna and flora species. Look out year-round for capybara, the world's largest (and sweetest-looking) rodent; toucans; spectacled caiman; vibrant butterflies; and coati. The latter are friendliest with humans, as they're always keen for a snack.

While a pandemonium of scarlet macaws taking to Rio's skyline is the norm, reforested rainforest Tijuca National Park , just south of the city, is home to 62 mammal species including squirrel monkeys, crab-eating fox and coati that can be spotted year-round. Also check out avian wildlife in the Jardim Botânico (botanical garden).

Travelers can also see jaguars in the Pantanal tropical wetlands in September and October; humpback whales in Abrolhos Marine National Park July through December; while in the Amazon rainforest you can spot sloth and giant river otters for most of the year.

The Cheapest Times to Visit Brazil

High season in Brazil is considered June through August, when North Americans and Europeans take summer vacation; March is the cheapest month to fly, according to Kayak . LATAM, American and Azul have the most flights from the US to Brazil, and though Kayak considers São Paulo its most popular destination, Rio has its own high season thanks to Carnival (which depends on Easter's date) so book rooms and flights well ahead for the best prices.

In Foz do Iguaçu, avoid January and February, when Brazilians and Argentinians take summer vacations, packing out hotels and restaurants; also avoid national holidays such as Easter and the second fortnight in July (school winter vacation) for the same reason.

In Rio de Janeiro, prices skyrocket in both pre- and Carnival season, especially in prime beachside neighborhoods like Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon. You'll find affordable hotels in Santa Teresa and Botafogo.

As for São Paulo, check out the Vila Madalena neighborhood, home to street-art filled Beco do Batman alley and the Japanese neighborhood of Liberdade for affordable accommodation.

January is a high season month , in Brazil. That's a great time to visit most coastal and beach destinations . Downsides: higher hotel prices and crowds.

That's the best time for those looking for entertainment, festivals, events, fun (January is a crowded time, with many Brazilians and Argentinians in holidays - local summer school holidays goes from December to the end of January or early February).

January is the best time to visit beach destinations in the South, or to visit Rio de Janeiro and beach resorts around Sao Paulo; that's also an excellent time to go to Bahia (Salvador), Pernambuco (Recife) and Ceará (Fortaleza), and to experience their many city events and festivals. Also a good time to visit the Iguassu Falls (though not the best).

Where not to go in January

Though January is a popular month to visit the Amazon, it's not the ideal time to go. January is a rainy month, which may affect your visit. And the same can be said about visiting the Pantanal, or the historic cities of Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte, Ouro Preto, Mariana), or Sao Paulo (it's a hot and humid month).

Visiting Brazil in February

February is also a high season month, and a great time to visit coastal and beach destinations. Expect high hotel prices and crowds. Summer school holidays are over, but there are still many people winding up their holidays, .

The spirit of Carnival is in the air, even in the years when Carnival falls in March.

Where to go or not to go in February

February is an excellent month to experience festivals, music, events, fun and to go to beaches and enjoy sea sports.

It's the best time to visit beach destinations in the South of Brazil, or to travel to Rio de Janeiro and the beaches near Sao Paulo; it's also an excellent month to go to Bahia (Salvador and dozens of other beach resorts in Bahia).

Though it's still high season in Recife (Pernambuco state) and Fortaleza (Ceará state), February may not be such a good month as January to travel to these cities and beaches: it rains a lot more than in January.

Visiting Brazil in March

March is still high season, in Brazil. Music, festivals, events and fun are still in the air, in key travel destinations. March is excellent for beach going and sea sports.

It rains a lot more in the North and Northeast coast of Brazil (Bahia, Recife, Fortaleza and the dozens of beach resorts of this part of Brazil) than in the previous months, which is a disadvantage to consider. These places are year-round beach destinations, but rain and humidity are factors that should be considered.

March is not also a good time to go to the Amazon, the Pantanal or the historical cities of Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte, Ouro Preto, Mariana) - though it is a good month to visit the south of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo (it rains less than in the previous months, while air and seawater temperatures remain high).

March is also an excellent month to visit the Iguassu Falls and not a bad time to visit places such as Brasilia.

Visiting Brazil in April

April is a transitional month in many parts of Brazil. It's not summer anymore in the large coastal cities, but you will still find music, festivals, events and fun. It's a good month for beach going and sea sports in Rio Janeiro and south Brazilian beaches (including those closer to Sao Paulo).

It's not the best time to go to the north and northeastern tropical beaches (Bahia, Fortaleza-Ceará, Recife-Pernambuco); it's a wet month with high humidity and heavy rainfalls.

That's a special good time to go to Rio, Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais (and its historical cities), but it's not yet the best time to go to the Amazon (it's still the rain season) or the Pantanal .

April is also a very good time to go to the Iguassu Falls (if you want to avoid crowds, do not go in the Easter week).

Visiting Brazil in May

May is typically a low season month, in Brazil, with the pros and cons of the low season. There is few festivals, and less fun and music events in the cities; on the other hand, there is also fewer crowds, traffic jams, and prices are lower.

From a weather perspective, May can be a very good month to go to Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, and to the nearby beaches. It's also a good time to visit Brasilia, or the historic cities of Minas Gerais (Mariana, Ouro Preto, Belo Horizonte).

It's not yet the ideal time to visit the Amazon, but it's a much better time than the previous months. It rains a lot less.

May is an excellent time to visit the Pantanal - the biggest concentration of wildlife in America, and the last good month - before the winter - to go to the south of Brazil.

In rainy years, May is also a good time to visit the Iguassu Falls (the problem with visiting the Iguassu Falls in May is that in dry years the falls may be in low-flow conditions).

May isn't the best time to visit the tropical beaches of the North and Northeast of Brazil, but it's not a bad time either. Seawater temperatures will be high, and on average it rains a lot less than in the previous months.

May is a transitional month in the North of Brazil, and in most years it's a good time to visit Lencois Maranhenses, a great natural phenomenon (an immense set of green lagoons and gorgeous sand beaches near Sao Luis do Maranhao and the mouth of the Amazon river).

Visiting Brazil in June

June is not high season; it hasn't the entertainment, festivals and the exuberance that you can experience in the big cities during the first months of the year.

Anyway, contrary to the first months of the year, June is a great time to visit the Amazon, the Pantanal and the Lencois Maranhenses . It's a relatively dry month, with pleasant temperatures in the tropical areas.

It can also be a good month to visit inland cities in Minas Gerais (the historic cities) and Brasilia.

And it's also a good time to visit Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, if you aren't interested in beach going and sea sports, or to experience the music and the summer events. If you are just looking for a dry month, with pleasant temperatures in the Rio and Sao Paulo region, then June is a great time.

Typically June also brings blue skies and pleasant temperatures, and fewer visitors, in Iguassu Falls . It's a good month to visit the Falls, though the water levels may be low.

June can also be a great time to visit and enjoy some parts of the North and Northeast tropical beaches, namely Bahia . It rains a lot less in June than in the previous months (though not in Recife/Pernambuco) , and the weather conditions are excellent for beach life. June is low season, with the pros and cons of a low season month.

Visiting Brazil in July

July is an excellent time to go to the Amazon . It's one of the best months to explore the river and the rainforest. It's also a good time to go to the Pantanal (for wildlife watching) or to travel to the tropical beaches of the North or Northeast of Brazil. July is still a rainy month in Recife, but in Bahia or Fortaleza precipitation levels are now low , and the air and seawater temperatures are pleasant.

More to the south, it's winter in Rio and Sao Paulo - July isn't a good month for beach going.

In the south , July can be a good or reasonable time to go to the Iguassu Falls , or to visit city spots (it doesn't rain much), but weather is not warm enough for beach holidays. It doesn't rain significantly, and cold spells are very rare, but it's winter in the South Hemisphere, and the south of Brazil is far from the northern tropical beaches.

Visiting Brazil in August

Like July, August is an excellent time to go to the Amazon - one of the best months to visit the rainforest and the river - or to go to Sao Luís to Maranhão and to see and enjoy the green lagoons of Lencois Maranhenses ). And the same goes for visits to the Pantanal (for wildlife watching).

August is also a good time to visit brazilian tropical beaches . It rains a lot less than in first half of the year, and though August is low season , air and seawater temperatures are warm and pleasant - and there are many Europeans and North Americans visitors in these resorts.

Anyway - from a weather perspective - things are rather different in the southern cities and resorts. It's a good time to visit the Iguassu Falls , but it's winter in Rio, Sao Paulo and further south, and beach life and sea sports - and fun and entertainment - are at a low point.

Visiting Brazil in September

September is a very good time to visit the Amazon (and the last good month of the year to visit Lencois Maranhenses , near the mouth of the Amazon); it's a relatively dry month, one of the best to visit the rainforest. And it's also a good month to go to the Pantanal , before the rains transforming the region into an immense lake.

September is also an a good time to go to Recife, Bahia, Fortaleza and the coastal beaches around. Precipitation is at their lowest and air and seawater temperatures are warm without being unpleasant. that's low season , and there isn't much fun and music around, but it's a very good option for those who prefer a quieter time and want to benefit from lower prices.

September is a transitional month in the south of Brazil, namely in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo regions. It's an excellent time to go to the Iguassu Falls , and though it isn't the best time for those looking for beach life and sea sports, most days are pleasant enough to allow the practice of sea sports and swimming. Further south the winter is still present .

Visiting Brazil in October

October is a transitional month in almost all Brazilian climate zones . It's not yet the high season, but temperatures are now warmer and precipitation levels are increasing in most places.

Air and seawater temperatures are now warm, allowing pleasant beach activity and sea sports. If you don't want to wait for the summer months and aren't interested in the summer events - and the music and festivals associated to local events and holidays - that's a very good time to visit Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo .

And it's also a good time to visit the Iguassu Falls , or the tropical beaches in the Northeast and the North.

Rain begins to be a problem in some regions, namely in the Pantanal . It's not a good idea to go to the Pantanal in October - or to visit Lencois Maranhenses , in the far North. And that's probably the last good (or reasonable) month to go to the Amazon (or the historic cities of Minas Gerais). The following months will be too rainy, and definitively not the best time to visit the Amazon.

Visiting Brazil in November

From a weather perspective, November is a great month to visit the south of Brazil, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and the tropical beaches of the Northeast and the North.

November is not a summer month, and it hasn't all the fun, entertainments and events of the summer (December to March); but in terms of temperature and humidity levels it's a better time.

Being a "low season" month, hotel prices are lower and there is fewer crowds than in the summer months.

Anyway, November is not a good time to visit the Amazon, the Pantanal or Sao Luis do Maranhao . It's a rainy month in the Amazon basin, and though there is many people visiting the Amazon in November (and in the summer months) that's not the best time to visit the region.

On the other hand, the lagoons in Sao Luis do Maranhao are now largely dry, and the Pantanal is mostly flooded.

Visiting Brazil in December

December is a high season month , in Brazil- which means more fun and entertainment, more festivals, music and events - at least from mid-December on, in the main coastal cities.

From a weather perspective, temperatures are high all over the Brazilian coast - Florianopolis, Santos-Sao Paulo, Ilhabela, Rio-Buzios, Bahia-Salvador, Recife, Fortaleza and so on - and though it rains quite a bit more than in the previous months, precipitation is still moderate.

In some sense that's a better time to visit the coastal cities than the following months (besides being a better time than the following months in terms of hotel prices and crowds).

That's a wonderful time for beach going, swimming and sea sports.

On the other hand, December is not a really good time to visit the Amazon (it's a rainy month in the Amazon basin), or the historic cities of Minas Gerais, or Brasilia; and it's a really bad time to go the Pantanal (bird and wildlife watching) or the Lençois Maranhenses (inland lagoons in the dunes).

Brazilian Seasons

It's common to consider four brazilian seasons:

Spring: 22nd September - 21st December Summer: 22nd December - 21st March Autumn: 22nd March - 21st June Winter: 22nd June - 21st September

Holidays in Brazil in February

Winter vacations in Brazil are often closely associated with Rio de Janeiro and its carnival season, which begins in February. During this time, prices for vacations in Brazil can increase by almost three or four times. February marks the peak of summer in Brazil, with the hottest weather found in the southeast of the country. Rio de Janeiro experiences high humidity, and the average daily temperature hovers around +26°C.

February in Brazil often experiences a significant amount of rainfall, with up to half of the month seeing rain. Daytime temperatures can become extremely hot, sometimes reaching up to +40°C. It's crucial to stay hydrated and avoid excessive sun exposure during these conditions.

Despite the challenging weather, many people visit Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro, and Manaus for the carnival festivities during this period. It's also an ideal time to explore the Amazon when the currents are strong. Sea tours to Brazil in February remain popular, with destinations like Fortaleza and Florianapolis being attractive options.

2 Weeks in Brazil: a Unique Itinerary and Unforgettable Trip

It’s the 5th largest country in the world, and 2 weeks in Brazil is barely enough to scratch the surface. Expecting to see it all in a short time is unrealistic. You have to decide beforehand which are Brazil’s famous landmarks you don’t want to miss. And from there, build your trip. Read about my Brazil itinerary to some of the most beautiful places.

I usually like to leave a considerable amount of improvisation in my travels, but when I eventually decided to have a vacation in Brazil , I soon found out that accurate planning was more than an option. It was a necessity.

Brazil is a vast and diversified country, and since I had only a limited time, I did a lot of background research. First, I read the Lonely Planet Brazil Guide and the Rough Guide to Brazil . Then I studied the itineraries of good tour operators. At that point, I wrote down a list of the places that were on the top of my wishlist. From there, I looked into how to hop from one spot to the other, how much it would take, and the costs.

Once gathered all the preliminary information, I started to draw my Brazil itinerary, trying to find the right balance to see as much as possible of Brazil in 2 weeks without rushing too much.

Planning a trip to Brazil

Getting to brazil.

Whatever country you’re traveling from, you’re likely to take a flight to Sao Paolo or Rio de Janeiro. Among Brazil’s busiest airports for international travelers, you’ll also find Recife and Fortaleza in the northeast. The flight cost can vary significantly depending on the season, and I generally check the schedules and prices on Kiwi.com to find the best bargains.

Travelers from the EU and many countries in South America don’t need a Visa. Brazil has recently granted access also to citizens from the United States, Canada, Australia, and Japan without a Visa.

That means that it’s now easier to travel to Brazil, and as a result, many airlines increased direct flights. Having said that, since things can change over time, it’s always better to check what are the latest requirements on an official source.

Getting around in Brazil

Brazil is incredibly vast, and rainforests cover a good portion of the country. Like in most countries in Latin America, there are virtually no railways, and getting around in Brazil by bus is an option only if you have a lot of time. Therefore, if you can only spend 2 weeks in Brazil, flying is the most effective way to visit the country, if not the only one.

Having to rely on many domestic flights in Brazil to get around is one of the main reasons why you need to plan your itinerary carefully. With only two weeks in Brazil, you don’t want to get stuck because there are no seats left.

Best time to visit Brazil

Spanning from the equator to under the tropic of Capricorn, and occupying a wide surface inland, Brazil’s climate varies widely depending on the geographic area. In general terms, a good portion of the country has a tropical climate. Meaning that the most significant differences are in terms of humidity and average rainfalls.

Furthermore, unlike Argentina or Peru, there are no high mountains in Brazil. That means that with a few exceptions temperatures never get very low. There are only a handful of areas where the temperature gets to freezing levels, and not often. Hence, you likely won’t need ultra-warm clothes in Brazil, even if you visit during the local winter months!

➣ Rio de Janeiro : the months from December to February, which is Summer in the Southern hemisphere, are the hottest months. Temperature can reach 40°C (104°F), and January is quite wet, with frequent and possibly abundant rainfalls. Summer is also high season and Carnival time. Subsequently, it’s more crowded and expensive. Winter in Brazil is mild, and while you might not be able to sunbathe and swim, it’s enjoyable. June, July, and August is the best time to visit Rio de Janeiro if you want to avoid the crowds and don’t want to endure scorching heat.

➣ Salvador de Bahia : generally hot and humid, the temperature in Salvador de Bahia is warm almost all year. However, if possible try to avoid April to June, the months with the most abundant rainfalls and a high level of humidity.

➣ Iguazu Falls : you can travel there all year round. However, you should keep in mind a few factors. Summer, from December to February, is when the water levels are at their peak. While this certainly promises gorgeous views, it’s also peak season (meaning more crowded and pricey). Furthermore, these are the rainiest months. Seeing the falls at full capacity comes at a price!

Thus, the best time to visit Iguazu Falls is generally from March to the end of September. Temperatures are more comfortable, there are fewer rainfalls (although I had a few short showers in August), and it’s less crowded.

➣ Cearà, Maranhao, and Lençois de Marnhenses : although the northeast of Brazil is hot all year, it has a typical tropical climate. That’s why the best time to visit Cearà, Maranhao, and discover the fantastic Lençois de Marnhenses is from May to August. After that, the beautiful lagoons will dry, and you’ll miss all that makes them such a special place.

➣ Brazil Amazon rainforest : due to the equatorial climate, with constant rainfalls throughout the year, you can visit the Brazil rainforest all year round. However, keep in mind that the most torrential rains usually occur from December to May. Therefore, in relative terms, the best time to visit the Amazon is from June to November. 

Independent travel or organized tour?

Whenever possible, I favor independent travel, and I planned my Brazil itinerary on my own. Actually, if you think of independent travel vs. organized tours , there are pros and cons to both. In the end, you have to choose what you feel more comfortable with.

For sure, Brazil is one of those destinations where traveling on your own requires a lot of planning beforehand. Thus, if you don’t have much time or don’t enjoy preparing for a trip, a Brazil tour package is the perfect option. It will indeed make your trip to Brazil easier and smoother, and it’ll take long research off your shoulder. Someone else, more experienced, will take care of that, and you’ll focus on having the most memorable vacations in Brazil.

Brazil is a popular destination, and there are plenty of tour operators organizing beautiful trips. If I were to go back to Brazil on an organized tour, I would travel with either GAdventures or Intrepid Travel . Cost of travel in Brazil

Without a doubt, traveling to Brazil is expensive . There are many reasons for that. First, unless you visit a specific region, you’ll have to fly to get around. For example, my Brazil itinerary covered such a wide area that I  had to buy multiple domestic flights to get around. Then, the prices fluctuate quite often, depending on the political and economic situation at the time of your travel. Furthermore, Brazil is beautiful but indeed not the safest country. That means that in the main cities, you need to choose the areas where to stay carefully. In short, you’ll have to arrange accommodations in touristy areas, which are safer but also more expensive.

Even if you travel independently, you’ll undoubtedly book a few guided tours to visit the cities, as well as to explore areas which you can’t reach on your own. Whether you go on a full-day tour of Rio de Janeiro’s main attractions or want to visit Iguazu falls, including a boat ride , it all adds up.

Brazil is a stunning and fascinating country, and I loved every moment of my journey, but it’s also one of the most expensive trips I ever made.

Safety in Brazil

There’s a high rate of poverty in Brazil, and as a consequence, petty crime is common, especially in the big cities. For that reason, you need to be extra cautious and aware of your surroundings. Here are a few tips that can help you stay safe in Brazil:

• Keep a low profile appearance and avoid wearing jewelry, expensive watches, and other costly items .
• Don’t show off your camera
• Never leave your stuff unattended , especially when on the beach
• Beware of locals approaching you. They might have the best intentions, but that’s not always the case.
• Do some research, and stay in areas that are safe for tourists , even if they’re more expensive.
• Bring with you only the cash you need . Leave your passport at your hotel and carry a photocopy.
• Don’t walk around after dusk . If you plan a night out, catch a taxi.
• Stick to official taxis.
• Consider booking a private transfer from Sao Paulo Airport or Rio de Janeiro Airport to your hotel upon arrival.

Travel Insurance

Purchasing proper travel insurance and protecting yourself against possible adverse events (illness, theft, injury, cancellations, and more) is a must. If you don’t have one already, I suggest you look at Travelex insurance programs .

What to pack for a trip to Brazil

How to pack for a trip to Brazil depends on your itinerary and the time of the year. Keep in mind that it never gets frigid, so you won’t need anything too warm. Generally speaking, the best thing is to travel light and pack comfortable clothes and shoes, plus something more nice-looking if you fancy a night out.

Since it rains regularly, I strongly recommend comfortable, quick-dry pants and shirts , as well as a lightweight rain jacket with a hood. And don’t forget to pack an all-in-one universal travel adapter with USB ports to recharge your devices.

To avoid buying countless water bottles, I strongly recommend buying a filtered water bottle and a water purifier . It’s an excellent way to reduce plastic usage, and it won’t take long to write off the expense. I used them when I traveled to Pakistan, and they work like a charm.

2 weeks in Brazil: my itinerary

Brazil is such a vast country that it’s just impossible to visit it all in only 2 weeks. Hence, I built my Brazil itinerary focusing on the areas which most attracted me, knowing that I needed to make choices. First, I was curious to visit the lively Rio de Janeiro and experience the charm of  Salvador de Bahia.  I also wished to explore some wilder, off-the-beaten-track places like the Parque do Lençois and Fernando de Noronha . After having studied the distances and the flights, I was able to draw my ‘perfect’ itinerary , resulting in one of the most beautiful trips I made in recent years. Here’s what my Brazil two weeks itinerary looked like.

1 – Rio de Janeiro

I didn’t have much luck in Rio de Janeiro, and it’s a city where I would undoubtly like to go back. Due to a delay, I missed my connection in Madrid and ended up arriving one day later than planned. Furthermore, the weather was not very good, preventing me from fully enjoying the Rio iconic view of the bay from the Corcovado. Notwithstanding, I liked the city a lot and managed to visit, if not all, at least many of Rio de Janeiro tourist attractions .

Unmissable Rio de Janeiro tourist attractions

If you’re spending 2 or 3 days in Rio de Janeiro, you’ll be able to visit the main attractions.

It’s no secret that the best things to do in Rio include the Sugarloaf mountain , from where if you’re lucky with the weather, you’ll admire one of the most iconic and breathtaking views in the world. You won’t want to miss the statue of Christ the Redeemer , dominating from atop the Corcovado , which is one of Rio de Janeiro landmarks that are a must-see. From atop the Corcovado, another spellbinding panoramic view awaits you.

The famous Copacabana beach is on everyone’s Rio de Janeiro wish list. If you have the time, though, also stroll along Ipanema beach. Remember the song “ the girl from Ipanema “?

Don’t miss visiting the bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa, which retained its colonial charm. Have dinner at one of the local restaurants, and end the night by listening to live music at one of the lively bars.

How about one or two Rio de Janeiro tours?

Although I’m a solo and independent traveler, there are times when I take a guided tour, especially in selected destinations. For sure, if you’re short of time, there’s no better way to discover Rio de Janeiro than an escorted tour. All the most since the city is enormous, and getting around is not always easy.

Unusual things to do in Rio de Janeiro

There is so much to do in Rio that you could easily spend a week or even more. However, you’ll have to make difficult choices if you can only spend 2 weeks in Brazil. Considering the mammoth distances, you’ll hardly stay more than 3 days in Rio de Janeiro. Having said that, if you’d like to combine sightseeing with exciting activities , active travel, or unusual things to do in Rio, here are some suggestions for you:

Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro

➣ Rio Panoramic is a lovely B&B in the charming Santa Teresa neighborhood. The rooms are tastefully decorated, but the real treat is the amazing view of Guanabara Bay.

➣ Miramar Hotel by Windsor is a beautiful hotel overlooking Copacabana. The hotel features elegant contemporary rooms, a pool, and a gym.

➣ Modern and stylish, the JANEIRO Hotel is located in Leblon. The hotel faces the beach, offers breathtaking views from the rooftop terrace, and is only a 5-minute walk from the subway station.

2 – Iguazu waterfalls

Although quite a detour from the rest of the itinerary, which was heading me to explore the North-West of Brazil , I wanted to see the iconic Iguazu waterfalls . I couldn’t even imagine visiting Brazil and not getting to one of the most famous natural wonders in the world.

A UNESCO World Heritage site , the Iguazu falls stretch between Argentina and Brazil , providing two different experiences and places. For that reason, I decided to visit both the Brazil and Argentina sides of Iguazu National Park, and I heartily recommend you do the same if you get the chance.

How to visit Iguazu Falls

Regular flights connect Iguazu to Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Iguazu is a consolidated, well-organized tourist spot that you can easily visit independently. However, a guided tour might be the right choice if you only spend one day and still want to visit both sides. Nevertheless, I suggest you stay at least one night, and even better two, to dedicate a full day to each side and enjoy the many activities.

Even if you decide to focus on one of the two sides (and in that case, I recommend Argentina), a tour will save you the hassle of reaching the Iguazu National Park by public transportation . As a matter of fact, there’s only one luxury hotel inside Iguazu National Park. Therefore, you’re most likely to overnight in Foz de Iguazu, some 13 km (8 mi) from the entrance of the Park. If you book a guided excursion, they’ll pick you up and drop you off at your hotel.

Tip: When looking for information beware that the towns on the Argentinian and Brazilian sides have similar names and it’s easy to get confused. Foz de Iguazu = Brazil / Puerto Iguazu = Argentina.

Aside from walking around, don’t miss taking a boat tour to admire the waterfalls from a different angle. I also explored Iguazu by bike , which I loved and really recommend if cycling is your thing.

TIP: Don’t forget to bring with you a waterproof poncho since, sooner or later, you’ll get more or less wet. Also, I strongly advise using a dry bag to protect your camera from water.

➣ As I mentioned before, there’s only one hotel inside the Brazilian side of Iguaçu National Park, the luxury Belmond Hotel das Cataratas . It’s obviously pricey, but you’ll also enjoy the unique experience of Iguazu Falls without the crowds early in the morning and at night.

➣ JL Hotel by Bourbon in Foz de Iguazu features modern and elegant rooms, an outdoor swimming pool, and a gym, and is good value for money.

3 – Salvador de Bahia

In Salvador de Bahia , I found everything I had imagined about Brazil after reading Jorge Amado’s ‘ Dona Flor and her two husbands .’

My time in Rio de Janeiro was way too short, and while I liked the city a lot, I felt I missed the chance to fully appreciate it. Conversely, Salvador de Bahia stole my heart . In a matter of minutes, I fell in love with the pastel-colored houses of the Pelourinho – the historic center of Salvador de Bahia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

The ubiquitous music wrapping Salvador made the city one of the most joyful I have ever visited and reminded me of Cuba. Everywhere, an explosion of colors, and wide smiles. And I could never have enough of the incredible Bahia cuisine . Every dish was indeed delicious, but none as mouth-watering as the traditional Moqueca , a delicious fish stew mixed with African influences.

Things to do in Bahia

There’s no better way to discover Salvador de Bahia than getting lost in the alleys and enjoying the unique vibe of this fascinating city. Once you have explored the Pelourinho, I suggest you visit Mafro, the Museum of the Afro-Brazilian culture , to learn about the different influences that shaped the area of Salvador de Bahia.

One of Salvador de Bahia attractions not to miss is the church of Nosso Senhor do Bonfim . Even if you’re not a fan of religious buildings, Bonfim is quite a unique experience. The veneration surrounding this church is incredible and palpable already outside, where you’ll see towering stacks of colorful bracelets sold as amulets. But it’s indeed inside the church, in the Chamber of Miracles, that you’ll fully get a sense of Bonfim. Hanging legs, arms, and other organs, made of plastic and walls entirely covered by passport photos tell stories of hope for a miracle. I never experienced a place like this, and it will long stay impressed in my memories.

4 – Jericoacoara National Park

My endless quest for wild landscapes and off-the-beaten-track destinations led me to Jericoacoara , Cearà . Once a fishing village, it became Jericoacoara National Park back in 2002. “Jeri”, as the town is affectionally nicknamed, is one of those happy places where you could stay for weeks.

The town has no roads, only sandy pathways, and no street electricity. On the other hand, there are plenty of lovely pousadas, cute cafes, and music everywhere. Jeri has a unique vibe which I loved.

How to get to Jericoacoara, things to do

Despite the inauguration of the brand new Jericoacoara airport in 2017, the number of flights is still very limited. At the moment, it’s possible to reach Jeri airport only from Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, and Campinas. Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte have 4 flights per week, and Campinas only 2.

That means that you’re more likely to arrive in Fortaleza, until not long ago the nearest airport, more than 300 km away. It takes at least 4 hours with a shared transfer to reach Jericoacoara from Fortaleza (but it can take more, as unforeseen events are most likely). Don’t even think about hiring a car because a large part is off-road, and the journey itself is, indeed, an adventure.

For such a small town, you’ll be surprised by the number of things to do. You can enjoy windsurfing, kitesurfing, horse riding. And, of course, you can have long walks along the beach and up the dunes. It’s also possible to explore more of Jericoacoara and Cearà on day trips. I took a buggy tour of the lagoon , which was a lot of fun and led me to stunning deserted beaches. And there are more excursions you can arrange directly on site.

Where to stay in Jericoacoara

➣ Cozy rooms and hammocks overlooking the patio. That’s what you’ll find at Pousada Jeri Dunas

➣ The Pousada O Refúgio features rooms decorated in a lovely rustic style and is only steps from the beach.

➣ Modern and stylish, Villa Jomael is a small guesthouse beautifully decorated, close to the beach. It’s quite pricey, though.

5 – Parque Dos Lençois de Maranhenses

The surreal Lencois de Maranhenses National Park was the real highlight of my 2 weeks in Brazil. It was the place I had dreamed of and was looking forward to seeing. Thus, it was impossible not to add Lencois de Maranhenses to my Brazil itinerary.

It all started when I saw a photograph of mesmerizing dunes filled with water. That landscape looked so insanely beautiful that I knew I wanted to get there. It’s certainly not the most accessible place, and you need a guide to explore the Parque do Lençois. But I didn’t regret the effort – and the cost – for a single minute.

I fell in love with the small pousadas on the wild beach and the endless white dunes with their deep blue or green pools. As I walked on the undulating dunes, bathed in the emerald green water of the lagoons, I sometimes had to pinch myself. Was this happening for real? Or was it only a dream?

Finally, I headed for the ultimate experience: flying over the dunes. There couldn’t have been a better way to end a perfect day than admiring the Parque Do Lençois from above. As the sun was now low on the horizon, the white dunes became shaded in gold, and the shadows made their shapes crispier.

How to visit Lencois de Maranhenses National Park

To visit Lencois de Maranhenses, you must book a guided tour, most likely from Barreirinhas. There are several local tour operators you can get in touch with while you’re in the area. Alternatively, you can book your tour of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in advance. You can also visit Lencois de Maranhenses and the surrounding area on a 10-day tour traveling by 4×4, boat, and plane.

6 – São Luís

From the Lençois Maranhenses National Park, we continued our journey in northeast Brazil to reach São Luís , from where we would catch our next flight.

There was only a short time to explore the city, but the only evening I spent in São Luís was a blast. Walking around in the evening, I stumbled into street musicians at every corner. People were chatting and dancing. And the music was so enthralling that I joined the crowd and started dancing too.

In the morning, there was just enough time for a stroll in the old town. While I didn’t have high expectations, I liked the old colonial houses, many of which were decorated with colorful tiles, as a sign of the past Portuguese influence.

2 weeks in Brazil: wrapping things up

Undoubtedly, spending 2 weeks in Brazil is a very short time for such a vast country. There’s much more to discover in Brazil besides this wild journey, primarily focused on northeastern Brazil. As I planned my Brazil itinerary, I knew that these were the places I longed to discover.

To me, these are some of the best places to visit in Brazil. But of course, I know that there’s much more to this incredible country, and I only got a taste of how much there still is to explore.

2 Weeks in Brazil: 2 Itineraries

If you plan to stay for 2 weeks in Brazil, this article offers you two different itineraries to choose from. I’m sure Brazil is famous for football enthusiasts as they won the world cup several times. Football is also their national sport, and they have so many world-renowned players.

I mean, there must only be a handful of people who don’t know Ronaldinho, Pele, Ronaldo (the Brazilian), and Neymar.

However, that’s not only the reason why Brazil is worth visiting. They have more than 1,500 beaches that are simply otherworldly, and street parties that have the most outlandish and creative costumes.

Not to mention tropical weather that is perfect for people who love to soak in the sun’s warmth and most of the people there are very cheerful and would greet the tourists as if they are their long-lost friends.

Their music is also amazing as they have a gazillion lively music genres that would draw people to dance their hearts out. Yep, Brazilians love to dance. Aside from being culturally diverse, there is also great ecological biodiversity here. It is home to the ethereal Amazon forest with more than a hundred thousand tons of plants.

And since we’re already talking about nature, you’ll surely be awestruck by their nature parks. Some have sand dunes, and others have waterfalls, caves, and even plateau mountains.

Responsible for more than one-third of the coffee being produced worldwide, their coffee beans have a distinct taste and a rich quality that people can’t get enough of. And, of course, don’t get me started on their food. There are so many desserts and street foods that originated in this country.

I’m sure I still couldn’t list all of the reasons why one should visit Brazil at least once in their lifetime, but I think these reasons alone are convincing enough.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE VISITING BRAZIL

Before we delve into discussing the itineraries, there are some things that a tourist needs to know first when going to another country. Knowing these things will also help in planning and writing our own preferred travel itinerary .

When is the best time to go to Brazil

The best time to go to Brazil is from November to March because these are the warmest months of the year. This festival usually happens in February for people who want to experience their Carnival. You might want to check out our 2 weeks in South America itinerary if you’re not sure if Brazil is the place for you.

Getting around

Taking a domestic flight is the most convenient and fastest way to get around Brazil. Remember, this country is massive. You could also ride intercity buses, but it would definitely take a lot longer to reach your destination, and you’ll probably ride a couple of intercity buses.

You might even ride water taxis. Taxis are commonly used by tourists, but they rarely go outside of the major cities, so this is only suitable if your destination is a major city. You can also use ride-hailing apps.

Car rental is also an option, but it is advisable to utilize this only if it is peak season.

Language and currency

The people in Brazil speak Portuguese. Here are some of the most common phrases for those who are planning to go to this country.

• Oi means hi so this is what one should say when greeting someone
• Obrigado means thank you
• Quero a conta, por favor means I want the bill, please and 
• com licensa could mean excuse me, this is handy if you want to get off public transport or if you’re in a crowded place and want to pass through. 

The currency used in Brazil is the Brazilian Real. In big cities, paying with your bank is easy. However, cash is still the king. ATMs should allow you to take out about $200 per transaction.

Brazil offers free visas to nationalities of most EU members, US, UK, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Namibia, Botswana, and many places in Latin America. Those travellers can travel around Brazil for up to 90 days.

Other visitors can apply for an evisa online . It’s valid for a year, allowing you to stay for 90 days, and it’s multiple entry.

2 WEEKS IN BRAZIL ITINERARY

Brazil is definitely one of the best holiday destinations to spend your 2-week vacation . Since 2 weeks is not that long, you will have more reason to come in the future.

We prepared two jamp-packed itinerary options for those planning to vacation for 14 days in Brazil. Each itinerary consists of the tourist spots as well as tips on how to get to the next destination from where you came from.

Itinerary #1: Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Brasilia, Amazon Rainforest

The first itinerary consists of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, and Amazon Rainforest. Rio de Janeiro is a humongous seaside city, well-known all over the world for its Ipanema and Copacabana beaches.

Aside from that, it also has the Christ the Redeemer statue, sugarloaf mountain, as well as favelas, and Carnival Festival. Sao Paulo, on the other hand, is a cosmopolitan city. It is Brazil’s financial centre, with tons of cultural institutions and amazing architectural structures.

Brasilia is the capital of Brazil. It is an aeroplane-shaped planned city located at the top of the Brazilian highlands.

Last but absolutely not least is the Amazon Rainforest. I mean, there must only be a handful of people who don’t know about this rainforest. This is the world’s largest tropical rainforest, covering not only almost all of northwestern Brazil but expanding up to Peru , Colombia , and other South American countries.

Rio de Janeiro for 4 days

2 weeks in Brazil is incomplete without visiting its most popular city. Rio De Janeiro is a wonderful city, so much so that it was named a world heritage site by UNESCO. If you plan to stay in Brazil for two weeks, 4 days in Rio is plenty. Some of the top tourist attractions that can be found here include

Sao Paulo for 3 days

You can reach Sao Paolo if you’re coming from Rio de Janeiro by bus or plane ride; it’s about 6 hours driving or half an hour flight.

Brasilia for 4 days

Many people assume that Rio de Janeiro is the capital of Brazil. Although it was until 1960 that the capital city was then changed to Brasilia. The reason for this is due to the fact that Rio was the capital of Brazil during colonial times.

It was changed to Brasilia (built on vacant and uninhabited land) to declare that Brazil was an independent country.

There are three options to reach Brasilia if you’re coming from Sao Paolo: riding a plane, bus, or driving. The fastest option for this is via plane, but it’s also the most expensive.

Riding a bus is the cheapest, but make sure that you have enough time because it would take more or less 17 hours for you to reach your destination.

Amazon Rainforest for 4 days

If you’re coming to Amazon Rainforest from Brasilia, you could ride a plane, bus, ferry, and drive. The most advisable, albeit expensive, option is to ride a plane because it would take days for you to reach your destination if you choose the other modes of transportation.

However, the travel time would be worth it as you would see a lot of unforgettable sights in this place.

Itinerary #2: Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Fortaleza, Amazon Rainforest

The second itinerary for the 2 weeks in Brazil includes the Amazon Rainforest, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Fortaleza. Those who are fond of music and dancing might be thrilled to know that Bossa nova was created and popularized in Rio de Janeiro.

It is also where the world’s largest urban forest could be found, the Tijuca forest, and they also have the biggest carnival party in the world.

Fortaleza is an urban hub that also has beaches with panoramic views aside from the vibrant nightlife and contemporary restaurants. Its beaches are highlighted by palm trees, dunes, red cliffs, and lagoons.

Aside from the facts stated above, there’s still more to the Amazon Rainforest than what meets the eye. It has about 40,000 plant species, 2.5 million insect types, 430 mammal species, 1,300 bird species, and 3,000 types of fish. Now I bet that’s something anyone would want to explore!

Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo for 7 days

In this specific itinerary, you’re going to stay in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo for 7 days. To reach Sao Paulo from Rio de Janeiro, you could ride a plane, ride a bus, ride a subway, then fly, take a bus, then ride a plane, use rideshare, or drive.

The most recommended option would be to fly because it is the fastest. However, if you’re on a budget, the cheapest option would be to ride a bus.

Fortaleza for 4 days

You could reach Fortaleza from Rio de Janeiro by riding a plane. Fortaleza is up to the northern part of the country. The most recommended option would be to fly because other options would take days for you to reach your destination. Once you reach Fortaleza, the recommended stay there would be four days.

There is a little beach town (Jericoacoara) west of Fortaleza, about a 5-hour drive famous for its sand dunes next to the Atlantic Ocean. Getting there is quite a ride since you have to take a 4×4 jeep through the massive sand dune of the Jericoacoara National Park.

I spent about 4 days here, and I could stay for more! Not going to lie. There are not many things to do apart from sand dunes driving, the beach, dancing, party, and reading a book. But the place is so authentic, and the people are very nice.

Amazon Rainforest for 3 days

The Amazon Rainforest is the biggest and most diverse in the world. No wonder it has to be visiting during your 2 weeks in Brazil.

To reach the rainforest from Fortaleza, you could ride a plane, ride a bus, then ferry or drive. However, just like the mode of transportation above, it would take you days to reach your destination, so if you don’t plan on staying for a long time, riding the plane would be the best option.

Brazil is undoubtedly a vibrant country in scenery and culture-wise. However, there are some final reminders that we need to impart before you plan your 2 weeks in Brazil. For instance, when visiting Amazon, taking a yellow fever vaccine is mandatory.

Also, don’t forget to put on mosquito repellant lotion, as there can be tons of mosquitos in this place. Take note that you wouldn’t be able to withdraw after 10 pm so make sure that you do so beforehand. Avoid going to favelas unless you’re on a guided tour, as it could be dangerous, especially for tourists. And there you have it.

Some of these destinations are in the off season, so you’ll find amazing pricing, which makes it even more fun to travel there! From cities with cobblestone streets to white sandy beaches, you’ll find the best February destinations.

Who knew February was such a great time to travel?! This list proves that it just may be the best. With fewer crowds and diverse options it’s up to you to decide the best place to vacation in February for your travel style.

There are sooo many options….let’s go!

1. Seychelles

• Region:  Africa (island in the Indian Ocean)
• Fly into:  Seychelles International Airport (SEZ)
• Average temperature:  85F/76F. Approximately 11 days of rain.

One of the best countries to visit in February is the Seychelles. If you are coming from the Northern Hemisphere, you will likely have the winter blues at this point and the Seychelles offers a completely different world during the winter months!

Technically, the Seychelles experience their ‘rainy’ season throughout this time, however, it’s the tropics so you can expect a bit of rain throughout the year, anyway.

One perk of visiting the Seychelles in winter is that the seas are calmer despite the weather being wetter. This is especially important for those taking the ferry to La Digue or Praslin from Mahe (the summer ferries are known to make passengers seasick).

In February, you can find the Seychellois celebrating Carnival. They have BBQs (a Creole favorite!), picnics, and a lot of dancing on the islands. There is also the eco-friendly marathon taking place in February.

The off-season winter months also experience slightly cheaper prices – which is great for those traveling as the Seychelles is not a budget destination . Tours are also easier to book at the last minute.

One tour to avoid missing out on is the Saint-Anne Marine Park and Moyenne Island day trip. This is one of the  best things to do on Mahe  and is a must for any visitor.

If you plan to visit all three main islands (Mahe, La Digue, and Praslin), you should set aside at least 10 days to properly see all the islands. Otherwise, your trip can feel a bit rushed.

Finland is one of the best vacation spots in February, especially in the Lapland region located in Northern Finland. This whole area is a complete winter wonderland, and you will be guaranteed tons of snow!

Firstly, you will want to base yourself in Rovaniemi, which is the capital of the Lapland region of Finland. It is located right on the Arctic Circle and you can here by train or plane. There are tons of nearby towns, all offering winter wonderland activities.

From winter hiking, frozen waterfalls, reindeer farms, huskies, Finnish Saunas, and ice fishing, there is something for everyone.

Additionally, one of the oldest known Nomadic festivals takes place during February. This is called the Jokkmokk market. It celebrates the traditions of the Sàmi people. During the festival, you’ll be taken back to the Middle Ages, where you can try traditional meals and explore the market stalls.

February is also an incredible time to see the Northern Lights in Lapland! There are plenty of guided tours you can book. By booking a tour, you’ll maximize your chances of seeing the lights as you will be guided by experts. 

Admittedly, the temperatures are definitely low during this time of the year. Just make sure to have extra layers and a big thick coat.

3. Turks and Caicos (a favorite on this list of best counties to visit in February)

One of the absolute best countries to visit in February, Turks and Caicos is nestled in the vibrant Caribbean Sea. With vibrant turquoise water and white-sand beaches, this getaway is a much-needed reprieve from a cold winter.

With a scene that can’t be described in words or photos, the color of the water in Turks and Caicos is truly unbelievable. In fact, it reminds me of the time I visited Banff in summer and saw the water in Moraine Lake – truly jaw-dropping!

Turks and Caicos is a chain of islands, although most people fly into and stay on Providenciales, unless you’re taking a cruise you’ll likely go through Grand Turk.

There’s so many great things to do in Turks and Caicos, including eating delicious food, enjoying water activities and beach hopping! Grace Bay is the best beach in Turks and Caicos, and where most of the luxury hotels are located.

To experience more of the island, go kayaking at Chalk Sound National Park, take a snorkeling tour or try kiteboarding at Long Beach.

Dating back to thousands of years of history,  Egypt  is an ancient and incredible country to visit . The country is home to many UNESCO World Heritage Sites and Natural Wonders of the World, including the Pyramids of Giza.

Cairo, the capital and the largest city of Egypt, has an international airport that connects with major cities around the world. There are also a few cruise lines that stop at Port Said in Cairo. If your interest is wine, then a trip to Mendoza and then to Salta is a must . Not far from Salta, the quebradas offer plenty of hiking opportunities, excellent wineries and a unique atmosphere here.

Also north of Buenos Aires, Iguazu Falls are on the border with Brazil. Spend at least 2 nights to visit both the Argentine side and the Brazilian side for a full experience.

One of the best tips for those visiting Argentina for the first time is to focus on just one area.  The country is massive, and it will take you multiple trips to visit it. Focus your trip on one region and try to explore locally as much as you can.

Italy is the best place for a vacation in February if you’re keen on saving money and avoiding crowds.  Aside from skiing areas in Northern Italy , February is in the ‘low season’ in much of the rest of the country so you can score some amazing deals.

You’ll want to stay at least a week – preferably two – to see the most popular Italian cities.  The largest airport in Italy is just outside Rome, so this is the best place to begin your trip. 

Start off your stay in the Eternal City with a  golf cart tour of Rome . This is the best way to see the top sights – from the Colosseum to Trevi Fountain and Rome’s famous piazzas – without wearing yourself out on the first day of your vacation. 

The lower crowds in Italy in February means you’ll have a much easier time getting tickets to top attractions such as the Vatican, or world-class museums like the Uffizi in Florence.

Mexico is an amazing destination for a winter trip if you are looking to escape colder climates. Both air and water temperatures are warm in February, which leaves you with plenty of outdoor activities to choose from. 

Most tourists come for the beautiful beaches, refreshing cenotes, and ancient Mayan Ruins. Rainforests of Yucatan are also perfect for wildlife viewing . You would need at least a week to explore everything this region of Mexico has to offer. 

Fly into Cancun as it has the best tourist infrastructure on the peninsula. You have more options for hotels, car rentals, and restaurants than anywhere else in the region. You can choose to take guided tours from Cancun or explore the nearby attractions on your own in a rental car.

The Mayan architecture is the highlight of the  Yucatan Peninsula . Start by visiting Chichen Itza, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Arrive as early as possible to enjoy the world famous pyramid with fewer tourists. You can visit a few other archaeological sites nearby, like Uxmal and Tulum.

If you prefer to extend your trip by a few days, it is worth venturing out deeper into the country. You could choose to see Palenque or Calakmul ruins. Hidden in the rainforest, these mysterious ruins attract less people. They are the most remarkable of all Yucatan sites and worth a longer drive.

No matter how you choose to spend your time, the beautiful country of Mexico will be one of the most memorable places to travel to in February.

29. Malaysia

Malaysia is a one of the February best holiday destinations. Malaysia offers a lot of different experiences amidst pleasant weather conditions.

Winter – from December to February – is the best time to visit the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, including Kuala Lumpur.

The world’s highest twin towers, the Petronas Twin Towers, are a must-visit attraction in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, offering breathtaking views of the capital’s skyline.

To experience Malaysia, combine Kuala Lumpur with other west coast destinations. The charming George Town, on the island of Penang, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, you can wander through historic streets and indulge in as much street food as you can handle.

Then continue your journey to Langkawi, a tropical paradise where white sandy beaches and lush jungles – including different species of wild monkeys are waiting for you.

If possible, consider staying at least two weeks to combine Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi. However, if you have more time, add the UNESCO World Heritage town Malacca to your itinerary and include  day trips from Kuala Lumpur , too.

You can hike the famous mountain of Gunung Jasar in the Cameron Highlights, hike through one of the oldest rainforests in the world, Taman Negara, and visit the town of Ipoh, where you’ll find one of Malaysia’s biggest cave temples.

Malaysia’s cultural calendar is another reason to visit in February . Both Chinese New Year and Thaipusam are celebrated in this month.

The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is well-connected to most major cities in and beyond SouthEast Asia. Low-cost carrier AirAsia makes domestic travel between Kuala Lumpur and other destinations easy (and cheap).

New Zealand in February is perfect for those seeking an idyllic summer escape. During the last month of Kiwi summer, you’ll find warm and pleasant weather perfect for exploring they country’s beautiful national parks.

While February is still a popular month with visitors, the major summer holiday season has ended and local school holidays are over, so it’s easy to find some secluded spots to relax.

I think February is one of the best times to visit New Zealand (the later in the month, the better). It's the best temperatures, and you avoid the school holiday traffic.

Ah yes Rhonda! I mean, New Zealand anytime of year sounds awesome but it's definitely deserving of a spot for the month of February, too :)

This is an awesome listm never heard of Turks and Caicos before. The beach locations are stunning. Seychelles and Maldives are at the top of my bucketlist
