A father and son trip to the beach turned into tragedy when a tiger shark mauled the younger man at a popular beach spot in Egypt.

Vladimir Popov, 23, was spending the day by the Red Sea in Hurghada, replete with white sandy beaches and crystal clear blue water. However his dip into the sea, while surrounded by other tourists, soon turned into a horror show as a shark swam towards Mr Popov.

His father Yury watched on helplessly as the 10ft shark circled around Russian Mr Popov who screamed out “papa, papa” as he was dragged under the water and holidaymakers scrambled from sea.

Locals would go on to exact revenge after capturing a shark and publically killing it.

Witnesses said the sea had turned a deep crimson red around Mr Popov as the shark toyed with his body for more than two hours. After a time the 23-year-old’s screams for his father stop.

Footage from the incident showed the beast’s fin and tail appearing from the water, as a beachgoer shouted out: “It is eating his remains now.”

“We went to the beach to relax. My son was attacked by a shark. It all happened in seconds,” Yury told local media.

“What kind of help can you give? This meat grinder happened in 20 seconds, he was just dragged under the water.”

The beast was then lifted out of the sea in a net and taken to the beach on a small boat where it was bludgeoned to death.

Video footage shows people hitting the fish over the head with what appeared to be a metal pole or a stick.

It appeared to be alive as it thrashed on the sand with a hook in its eye.

Authorities closed off a 46-mile stretch of the coastline, announcing it will remain off limits until Sunday.

Yury added: “This is an absolutely ridiculous coincidence, because it is a safe beach. There are ships and yachts around.

“It's never happened there. They usually attack on wild beaches. It's just some kind of evil fate."

The ministry later said it had caught the shark and was examining it in a laboratory to try to determine the reasons for the rare attack.

Shark attacks are rare in the Red Sea coastal regions.

However, in 2022 there were two fatal attacks in Hurghada within days, killing an Austrian and a Romanian tourist.

Russian man dies after being mauled by shark off Egyptian Red Sea resort

Authorities close off 46-mile stretch of coastline after man attacked by tiger shark near Hurghada

A Russian man has died after being mauled by a shark off one of Egypt’s Red Sea resorts, Egyptian and Russian authorities have said.

Egypt’s environment ministry said the man was killed on Thursday after being attacked by a tiger shark in the waters near the city of Hurghada. Authorities closed off a 46-mile (74km) stretch of the coastline, announcing it would remain off-limits until Sunday.

The ministry later said it had caught the shark and was examining it in a laboratory to try and determine the reasons for the rare attack.

The Russian consulate in Hurghada identified the man as a Russian citizen but did not give his name. Russia’s Tass state news agency said the person killed was a Russian man born in 1999 who lived in Egypt full-time and was not a tourist.

A video circulating online, purportedly of the attack, shows a man thrashing about in the water before being repeatedly attacked by a shark circling around him, then being dragged under.

A diver who arrived on the scene just after the attack said people had rushed to help the victim after a lifeguard from a nearby hotel raised the alarm, but were not able to reach him in time.

In a statement posted on its official channel on the Telegram messaging application, the consulate urged Russian tourists to be vigilant when in the water and to strictly adhere to any swimming bans imposed by local authorities.

Shark attacks are rare in the Red Sea coastal regions. In 2022, however, two women – one Austrian and one Romanian – were killed within days of each other in shark attacks at Hurghada.

Egypt’s Red Sea resorts, including Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh, boast some of the country’s most renowned beach destinations and are popular with European tourists. Divers are attracted by the steep dropoffs of coral reefs just offshore, which offer a rich and colourful sea life.

Egypt has in recent years sought to revive the vital tourism sector, hurt by years of political instability, the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

A young Russian man was mauled to death by a shark off one of Egypt's Red Sea resorts, according to Egyptian and Russian authorities.

The man, named as Vladimir Popov by Russian media, died after being attacked by a tiger shark in the waters near the city of Hurghada, Egypt's environment ministry said.

Footage circulating online, purportedly of the attack, shows a man thrashing about in the water before being repeatedly attacked by a shark circling him and then dragged under.

The ministry later said the shark had been caught and was being examined in a laboratory to try to determine the reasons for the rare attack.

A 46-mile (74km) stretch of the coastline was closed off by authorities, who announced it would remain off-limits until Sunday.

The man's father, Yury Popov, was forced to watch the attack helplessly from the shore as the predator circled the 23-year-old and eventually dragged him under the water.

Speaking to the 112 media outlet following his son's death, Mr Popov said: "We went to the beach to relax. My son was attacked by a shark, it all happened in seconds."

Egypt's renowned beach destinations in the Red Sea, such as Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh, are frequently visited by European tourists. These destinations are particularly popular among divers who are drawn by the vibrant sea life visible in the steep drop-offs of coral reefs located just offshore.

In recent times, Egypt has been making concerted efforts to revive its tourism industry, which has suffered due to political instability, the COVID pandemic, and the conflict in Ukraine.

Tiger sharks are a notable species found in both tropical and temperate waters. They are known for being among the sharks that often attack humans without provocation, as per the records of the International Shark Attack File.

Russian dies in shark attack off Egypt's Red Sea coast

russian tourist killed in egypt

CAIRO - A Russian man was killed on Thursday when a shark attacked him off the coast of Egypt’s Red Sea resort city of Hurghada, the authorities said.

“An attack by a tiger shark on a beachgoer... led to his death,” Egypt’s environment ministry posted on Facebook, without providing further details.

Russian media said the victim was a Russian national in his 20s, and video circulated on social media appearing to show the incident.

Russian Consul-General Viktor Voropayev told state-owned TASS news agency that the Egyptian authorities had confirmed to him the death of the Russian national, who was born in 1999.

“The victim was not a tourist, but a permanent resident of Egypt,” Mr Voropayev told the news agency.

Video footage said to be of the incident was widely circulated on social media in Egypt, showing a person struggling to escape from the shark.

Egypt’s environment ministry said a team had captured the shark “to inspect it”, saying it had displayed “abnormal behaviour... resulting in the incident”.

It said water activities would be suspended for two days starting on Friday, pointing to previous attacks on people by the same type of shark.

The Red Sea is a popular tourist destination, where sharks are common but rarely attack people who swim within authorised areas.

Last July, two women, an Austrian and a Romanian, were killed in a shark attack near Hurghada.

Tiger shark clubbed to death after killing tourist in Egyptian resort Hurghada

A 10ft tiger shark was beaten to death after it killed a Russian tourist in the Egyptian resort of Hurghada.

A tiger shark was clubbed to death in a savage revenge attack after the beast killed a tourist at a popular resort in the Red Sea.

Tourists watched in horror as Vladimir Popov, 23, was dragged under the water and mauled to death by the 10ft “meat grinder” shark in Egypt’s Hurghada.

Popov’s helpless dad Yury was watching from the shore as his son desperately screamed “papa, papa” while the predator hunted him.

Witnesses said the shark savaged Popov before toying with his body for a harrowing two hours in the water.

“It’s eating his remains now,” one witness can be heard saying in footage of the horrifying incident, the New York Post reported.

Footage then showed the beast being hauled out of the sea on a small boat in a net before being dumped on the beach and ferociously beaten.

The shark appeared to be alive as it writhed on the sand with a hook in its eye.

The video showed a man savagely smashing it over the head with what appeared to be a stick or a metal pole.

Egyptian authorities said they caught the shark that attacked the Russian man.

Researchers are now probing whether the shark was responsible to any previous incidents in the area.

Popov was on a long stay in Egypt - possibly avoiding the call up to Putin’s war in Ukraine.

His dad Yury told local media: “We went to the beach to relax. My son was attacked by a shark. It all happened in seconds.

“This meat grinder happened in 20 seconds... it is just some kind of evil fate.”

Initial reports suggested Popov was with his girlfriend at the time - but local media reports said she’s currently in Russia.

It’s understood a woman who was also in the water managed to escape.

The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed the death of a citizen from a shark attack.

When the incident happened, voices in the sea pleaded: “Swim away, swim away! Quick! A shark!”

One eyewitness said: “It was about seven metres from the shore.”

Another said: “The shark appeared, and immediately bit the man.

“He tried to swim away from the shark, but he couldn’t.

“It dragged the body for two hours. It constantly dragged him under the water.”

The victim was named as Vladimir Picture:: East2West

Russian tourists have been told to be vigilant in the popular resort and follow the instructions of hotel staff.

It comes after a 37-year-old tourist was ambushed by a shark at a Red Sea resort in Aqaba, Jordan, in June 2021.

The man was parasailing when he suddenly began to graze the ocean.

A shark then leapt from the water and chomped his leg - and the tourist miraculously managed to not get dragged beneath the water.

He was left brutally bitten and sustained serious injuries from the attack.

And in July last year, a tourist was mauled to death by a shark in Sahl Hasheesh, Egypt.

A Russian citizen was killed in a shark attack in Egypt on Thursday, leading to mixed reactions on social media amid anti-Russia sentiment because of the war in Ukraine.

Egypt’s Ministry of Environment said that a beachgoer was killed by a tiger shark in the resort city of Hurghada on the Red Sea. Russia’s official TASS news agency identified the victim on Thursday as Russian citizen V. Yu. Popov, 24 years old. The victim was a permanent resident in Egypt and not a tourist, according to TASS.

A two-day ban on swimming, snorkeling and other water activities went into effect in the area on Friday morning, according to a Facebook post by the Egyptian environment ministry. In a later statement, the ministry said the shark had been caught.

A Russian beachgoer was killed in a shark attack in Egypt while hanging out near a Red Sea resort town

  • A shark attack in Egypt claimed the life of a young Russian man at a Red Sea resort.
  • The man, born in 1999, had just moved to the region with his father, per independent Russian media.
  • A video appearing to show the horrific attack has been circulating on Russian social media.

Insider Today

A Russian man was killed by a shark at a resort town in Egypt on Thursday.

The man, identified as Popov V., died during a stay at the beach resort town of Hurghada, which lies on the coast of the Red Sea, the local Russian consulate said, per state media agency TASS. He was born in 1999, per the consulate.

Popov was attacked by the shark while at Dream Beach , according to Consul General Viktor Vorpaev.

The beach is popular with tourists, but Vorpaev said Popov was not a tourist and was living in Egypt permanently, TASS reported.

The shark in question was a tiger shark, the Egyptian environment ministry said on Thursday. The ministry banned water activities in the area for the next two days and said the same shark had attacked people before.

Related stories

Following the attack, the consulate warned Russians in the area to "remain vigilant when in the water" and to follow swimming restrictions and instructions from Egyptian authorities.

The independent Russian outlet Baza reported that Popov had moved with his father to Hurghada and bought an apartment in the town a few months ago.

A neighbor of Popov's told the outlet that the victim was with his father at the shore, and that he was heard calling for his "dad" as the attack unfolded.

A video, which was circulated this week on Russian Telegram channels, appears to show several moments of the attack. In the chilling footage, a man in the water can be heard screaming as a shark circles around him before pulling him under and thrashing near the surface.

"Oh my god," an onlooker shouts repeatedly off-camera.

A witness told Russian television network Ren.TV that rescuers tried to swim to Popov, but that he disappeared before they reached him.

Popov's death received widespread Russian media coverage this week, in light of two other deadly shark attacks in Hurghada last year. In July 2022, a Romanian woman and an Austrian woman were killed within days of each other near the resort town.

Shark are commonly found in the Red Sea, but rarely attack people who swim within approved areas. Two other deadly shark attacks at Red Sea beaches have occurred in 2015 and 2018, per Agence France-Presse.

Egypt's Environment Ministry said in a statement posted on Facebook that a tiger shark was responsible for the death of a beachgoer, without giving details of the victim.

A team from the ministry and other authorities was able to capture the shark, the statement said, adding that local authorities had issued a ban on swimming, snorkelling and other water sports activities on several beaches near the attack site.

A diver who arrived on the scene just after the attack said people had rushed to help the victim after a lifeguard from a nearby hotel raised the alarm, but were not able to reach him in time.

Russia's TASS news agency said the person killed was a Russian man born in 1999 who lived in Egypt full-time and was not a tourist.

In a statement posted on its official channel on the Telegram messaging application, the consulate urged Russian tourists to be vigilant when in the water and to strictly adhere to any swimming bans imposed by local authorities.

CAIRO, Egypt — A Russian man died after being mauled by a shark on Thursday off one of Egypt's Red Sea resorts, Egyptian and Russian authorities said.

Egypt's Environment Ministry said the man was killed after being attacked by a tiger shark in the waters near the city of Hurghada. Authorities closed off a 74-kilometer (46-mile) stretch of the coastline, announcing it will remain off-limits until Sunday.

The ministry later said it had caught the shark and was examining it in a laboratory to try and determine the reasons for the rare attack.

The Russian Consulate in Hurghada identified the man as a Russian citizen but did not give his name.

A video circulating online, purportedly of the attack, shows a man thrashing about in the water before being repeatedly attacked by a shark circling around him, then being dragged under.

Shark attacks are rare in the Red Sea coastal regions. However, in 2022, two fatal attacks in Hughada within days,  killing an Austrian and  a Romanian tourist .

Egypt’s Red Sea resorts, including Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh, boast some of the country’s most renowned beach destinations and are popular with European tourists. Divers are attracted by the steep drop-offs of coral reefs just offshore, which offer a rich and colorful sea life.

Egypt has in recent years sought to revive the vital tourism sector, hurt by years of political instability, the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

Tiger sharks are large species that reside in tropical and temperate waters and are among sharks most cited by the International Shark Attack File for unprovoked attacks on humans.

A top Hezbollah terrorist was killed in an airstrike in southern Lebanon early Tuesday, according to the Israel Defense Forces as it shared stunning footage of the attack.

The video of the assault opens with an aerial view of a car driving through the city of Aadloun, with Hezbollah operative and “key terrorist” Hussein Azqul confirmed to be inside, the IDF said.

As soon as the Israeli aircraft locks onto Azqul’s car, a missile is fired, hitting the vehicle dead center, with flames erupting from the explosion.

An Israeli airstrike took out a senior Hezbollah terrorists on Tuesday morning.

The blast causes the car to lose control and careen off the road before coming to a stop as it continues to burn.

A second explosion is seen further up the road, suggesting a second missile was fired but missed after the car lost control.

The attack took place on an empty roadway in the Lebanese coastal city.

Hussein Azqul was identified as "a key terrorist" in Hezbollah's air defense system.

Azqul was identified as “a key terrorist” in Hezbollah’s air defense system who the IDF alleged took part in the planning and execution of the group’s terror activities.

The Israeli military said Azqul’s death served as a “significant blow” to Hezbollah’s air defense unit as the IDF and the terrorist group continue to exchange fire over the northern border .

Along with Azqul, the IDF said it also killed another Hezbollah member in a separate airstrike in southern Lebanon overnight.

Muhammad Attiya, a member of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan unit, was also identified as an operative involved with the attacks against Israel, the IDF said.

The two senior Hezbollah members are the latest in a series of precise airstrikes that have taken out high-ranking terrorists traveling on the road in Lebanon.

Azqul's car was traveling on an empty roadway in the city of Aadloun, in southern Lebanon.

Last week, Hezbollah field commander Ismail Yusaf Baz was killed after an Israeli airstrike hit is car while traveling near Tyre, just miles from where Azqul was hit.

Hezbollah has confirmed both Attiya and Azqul’s deaths, bringing the terror group’s death toll up to 287 since the start of the war in Gaza, the Times of Israel reports .

U.S. Citizen Killed in Moscow-Held Donetsk – Russian Media

russian tourist killed in egypt

A U.S. citizen known to have fought with pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine between 2014 and 2017 has been killed in Moscow-occupied Donetsk, Russian media reported Friday.

Russia-installed authorities in eastern Ukraine had earlier this month reported the American — 64-year-old Russell Bentley — as missing.

"Russell Bentley, known as 'Texas,' a real American, truly from Texas, was killed in Donetsk," the head of the pro-Kremlin RT network Margarita Simonyan said on social media.

"He was fighting for our guys," she said.

Simonyan gave no details on how he died.

The Vostok battalion with which he fought confirmed his death, calling for "exemplary punishment for those who killed Russell Bentley," suggesting he did not die in a Ukrainian attack.

Police in Donetsk said on April 8 that Bentley had gone missing after going to help victims of a Ukrainian strike on Donetsk.

On a Telegram channel previously run by him, Bentley's wife Lyudmila has said he had been "abducted" by Russian soldiers from a tank battalion, calling on them to let him go.

The Texan self-declared communist joined pro-Moscow separatists in Ukraine to fight Kyiv in 2014. He had been given Russian nationality.

Ukraine claims to shoot down Russian bomber - Moscow denies it

FILE - Russian Tu-22M-3 long-range bombers fly during the Victory Day military parade marking 71 years after the victory in WWII in Red Square in Moscow, Russia, 2016.

Ukraine says it shot down a strategic Russian bomber on Friday, but Russia claims the plane crashed in a sparsely populated area due to malfunction.

Ukraine has said it shot down a Russian bomber on Friday.

However, Moscow officials said the plane crashed “in a deserted area” in Russia’s southern region of Stavropol following a malfunction.

Euronews cannot independently verify either side's claim.

Russia has recently gone on the offensive in south and eastern Ukraine, amid improved weather conditions and delays in western arms deliveries to Kyiv.

While Russia’s air force is vastly more powerful than Ukraine’s, sophisticated missile systems provided by Kyiv’s Western allies are a major threat to Russian aviation.

The Ukrainian report said military intelligence cooperated with the air force to bring down the Tu-22M3 bomber with anti-aircraft missiles.

Russia commonly uses the bomber - which can also carry nuclear warheads - to fire Kh-22 cruise missiles at Ukrainian targets from inside its airspace.

Russian authorities say three crewmembers were rescued after ejecting from the aircraft, and the search for a fourth is taking place.

Previous Ukrainian claims of shooting down Russian warplanes during their more than two-year war have met with silence or denials from Moscow.

On Christmas Eve, Ukraine claimed to have shot down two Russian fighter jets.

In January, the Ukrainian air force said it shot down a Russian early warning and control plane and a key command centre aircraft that relays information to troops on the ground, in what appeared to be a significant blow for the Kremlin’s forces.

The next month, Ukraine said it knocked out another early warning and control plane.

Again in January, Moscow accused Kyiv of shooting down a Russian military transport plane that was carrying Ukrainian POWs who were headed for a prisoner swap.

More than 50,000 Russians killed in Ukrainian ‘meat grinder’: Report

The rate of casualties accelerated last year as inexperienced troops arrived on the front lines.

Russian military casualties in the war with Ukraine have topped 50,000, according to research.

The BBC, whose Russian unit has been counting deaths since Moscow’s forces invaded the neighbouring state in February 2022, revealed the number on Wednesday, noting that the rate of casualties accelerated in the second year of the conflict.

The tally, compiled by BBC Russian, independent media group Mediazona and volunteers saw the death toll rise to 27,300 Russian soldiers during the second year of the war, a 25 percent increase on the first year.

The only official death toll released by Russia said in September 2022 that just under 6,000 of its soldiers had been killed.

‘Meat grinder’

The research notes that Moscow’s use of “meat grinder” tactics is likely to have accelerated the loss rate of troops last year.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) points out that as the front line in eastern Ukraine became bogged down in 2023, battleground tactics deteriorated into sending waves of troops in frontal assaults.

That saw Russian losses spike during large-scale offensives in Donetsk, the BBC investigation says, and again months later during the battle to take the city of Bakhmut.

The BBC estimates at least two in five of Russia’s dead fighters had nothing to do with the military before the invasion, being drawn from the ranks of volunteers, civilians and prisoners, and therefore struggled for technical and tactical expertise.

The analysis notes about 9,000 prisoners, recruited either through the Wagner mercenary outfit or directly by the Ministry of Defence, were killed in the invasion. These recruits survived an average of two to three months.

The BBC acknowledges that its data does not cover casualties among militia forces in Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine, while adding that the actual overall death toll is probably significantly higher than 50,000.

Ukraine said in February that it had lost 31,000 soldiers. That figure is also widely thought likely to be lower than the true toll.

Responding to the report, the Kremlin said it did not disclose information on military deaths and casualties, which falls under the remit of the defence ministry.

According to AFP, spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that due to laws covering official secrets of Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine it is “absolutely understandable” that the ministry did not release the figures.

Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said that he spoke to his Iranian counterpart Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and "took up the release of 17 Indian crew members of MSC Aries."

Four Filipino seamen were also on board the ship, according to the Philippine Department of Migrant Workers.

The department said it was working with its government, the ship owner, and the operator to release the captured seafarers.

On Saturday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards seized an Israeli-linked container ship in a helicopter operation near the Strait of Hormuz, state news agency IRNA reported.

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) said there were 25 crew members on board.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Sunday said he "strongly condemns" Iran's missile and drone attack on Israel.

"(The attack) further aggravates the current situation in the Middle East. We are deeply concerned and strongly condemn such an escalation," Kishida told reporters.

Kishida said Japan would continue diplomatic efforts to "prevent the situation from worsening and to calm the situation down," and "respond in cooperation with other countries."

Blinken calls British and German counterparts following Iran's attack on Israel

From CNN's Philip Wang

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with his counterparts from the United Kingdom and Germany on Sunday following Iran's attack on Israel, according to readouts from the State Department.

All parties agreed "the importance of condemning Iran's attack in the strongest possible terms and preventing further escalation," the readout said.

Blinken earlier held phone calls with his counterparts from Turkey, Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia , in which he emphasized the importance of avoiding escalation in the Middle East and of "a coordinated diplomatic response."

US forces destroyed more than 80 attack drones from Iran and Yemen, Central Command says

From CNN's Philip Wang

US forces intercepted more than 80 one-way attack drones and at least six ballistic missiles from Iran and Yemen during its attack on Israel, according to a statement from the Central Command.

The operation included destroying a ballistic missile on its launcher vehicle and seven drones on the ground in Iranian-backed Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, CENTCOM said.

"Iran's continued unprecedented, malign, and reckless behavior endangers regional stability and the safety of U.S. and coalition forces," the statement added.

Israeli and Iranian ambassadors trade accusations during UN Security Council session

From Abel Alvarado in Atlanta

Israel’s UN ambassador Gilad Erdan shows a video of drones and missiles heading toward Israel during a United Nations Security Council meeting at UN headquarters in New York on Sunday.

Israel and Iran’s United Nations ambassadors condemned each other’s actions during Sunday’s UN Security Council emergency session called to address Iran’s attack on Israel.

Israel’s UN ambassador Gilad Erdan said Iran "must be stopped before it drives the world to a point of no return, to a regional war that can escalate to a world war." Erdan accused Iran of seeking world domination and that its attack proved that Tehran "cares nothing, nothing for Islam or Muslims" before pulling out a tablet to show a video of Israel intercepting Iranian drones above Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Erdan called on the UN Security Council to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terror organization.

“Action must be taken now, not for Israel's sake, not for the region's sake, but for the world's sake. Stop Iran today."

Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani said his country’s operation was "entirely in the exercise of Iran’s inherent right to self-defense, as outlined in Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations and recognized by international law."

Iravani said:

"This concluded action was necessary and proportionate," adding that the operation was “precise and only targeted military objectives” to reduce the potential of escalation and to prevent civilian harm. “Iran is never seeking to contribute to the spillover of the conflict in the region, nor does it to escalate or spread the tension to the entire region," he said.

Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani speaks during the meeting on Sunday.

Tehran’s attack had been anticipated since  a suspected Israeli strike  on an Iranian diplomatic complex in Syria earlier this month.

Iravani added Iran has “no intention of engaging in conflict with the US in the region” but warned Iran will use its “inherent right to respond proportionately” should the US initiate a military operation against “Iran, its citizens or its security.”

Israeli war cabinet says it's ready to respond to Iran's attack but delays immediate action. Here's the latest

From CNN staff

The hours-long Israeli war cabinet meeting ended Sunday night without a decision on how Israel will respond to Iran’s missile and drone attack , an Israeli official said.

The cabinet is determined to respond — but has yet to decide on the timing and scope and the official said the military has been tasked with coming up with additional options for a response.

Separately, a senior Biden administration official told reporters that an Israeli official told the United States that it's not looking to significantly escalate the showdown with Iran.

CNN analyst Barak Ravid said Israeli ministers Benny Gantz and Gadi Eisenkot advocated for swift action, but US President Joe Biden's phone call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu led to a decision to delay the response until the next day.

Here are the latest headlines:

  • Retaliation is over, Iran told US: Iran privately messaged the United States that its retaliation against Israel had concluded, echoing what Tehran said publicly, according to a senior administration official. Late Saturday, Iran said its attack on Israel is a response to Israel's strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, and "the matter can be deemed concluded." However, President Ebrahim Raisi said any “new aggression against the interests of the Iranian nation will be met with a heavier and regrettable response,” according to Iran’s state news channel IRIB.
  • United Nations response: UN Secretary-General António Guterres  called for a de-escalation of violence after Iran’s attack. Guterres said the United Nations and member countries have a “shared responsibility” to engage “all parties concerned to prevent further escalation.” He also called for a ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza conflict. “Neither the region nor the world can afford more war,” he said.
  • G7 and others: Amid a flurry of diplomatic activity in response to Iran's attack, the G7 nations said they would work together to "stabilize the situation" in the Middle East, according to a statement from Biden. Also, Jordan summoned Iran's ambassador in Amman on Sunday after it intercepted Iranian drones over the country.
  • Meanwhile in Gaza: As thousands of Palestinians were turned away from returning to their homes in northern Gaza on Sunday, a 5-year-old girl was shot in the head by Israeli soldiers, her mother said. Video showed a man carrying a 5-year-old girl named Sally Abu Laila, who was bleeding from her head, with people crowding around her in panic trying to cover her wound.

Also on Sunday:

  • Israel decided to lift its restrictions on large gatherings and to reopen schools on Monday.
  • The US Department of Homeland Security has not identified any “specific or credible threats” to the US since Iran attacked Israel.

Blinken calls Turkish, Egyptian, Jordanian and Saudi counterparts following Iran's attack

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday spoke with his counterparts in Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia following Iran's attacks in Israel, according to readouts from the State Department.

During his phone calls, Blinken emphasized the importance of avoiding escalation in the region and the importance of "a coordinated diplomatic response."

In his conversation with Jordan and Egypt, Blinken also underlined the significance of achieving an "enduring end to the crisis in Gaza."

Iran will be held responsible if any action is taken against the US or Israel, deputy ambassador warns

From CNN’s Abel Alvarado

US Deputy Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood speaks during a United Nations Security Council emergency session over Iran’s attack on Israel on Sunday in New York.

The United States warned Iran against taking any action against the US or Israel during the UN Security Council emergency session over Iran’s attack on Israel.

“Let me be clear, if Iran or its proxies take actions against the US or further action against Israel, Iran will be held responsible,” US Deputy Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood said Sunday.

The United States is “not seeking escalation, our actions have been purely defensive in nature,” adding that the “best way to prevent such escalation is an unambiguous condemnation of the council of Iran’s unprecedented large-scale attack,” he said.

The envoy reiterated US support for Israel and condemned Iran’s attack. “Iran’s intent was to cause significant damage and death in Israel,” Wood said.

Wood also said the UN Security Council had an “obligation to not let Iran’s actions go unanswered.”

“For far too long, Iran has flagrantly violated its international legal obligations,” he said before listing occasions Iran has violated UN Security Council resolutions and international law.

Wood accused Iran of being in a “broad sense complicit” of the October 7 attack on Israel by providing “significant funding and training for the military wing of Hamas.”

He added the US will explore "additional measures to hold Iran accountable here in the UN.”

At least 50,000 Russian troops have been killed in Ukraine, media probe finds

An investigation by BBC Russia and independent Russian media outlet Mediazona finds Russia has suffered at least 50,000 casualties since launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

A MARTÍNEZ, HOST:

More than 50,000 Russian soldiers have died since Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than two years ago. That figure is according to a report from BBC Russia and the now-banished independent Russian news outlet Mediazona. The Kremlin's only public acknowledgment of its troop casualties came more than a year ago. It put that number at around 6,000, a figure that was immediately disputed. Mika Golubovsky is an editor with Mediazona and helped with the investigation. He's based in Vilnius, Lithuania. Mika, so what sources did you use to determine the number of Russian casualties from fighting in Ukraine?

MIKA GOLUBOVSKY: Hi. Yeah, our three main sources are social media posts and official news items on the internet. That's one. Pictures from cemeteries of graves of fallen soldiers. These pictures are collected by volunteers on the ground. And some databases, official government databases, like the probate registry, for instance.

MARTÍNEZ: OK, so what do the trends tell you then about Russia's combat strategy over that time?

GOLUBOVSKY: Well, we've been tracking casualties for two years now. And you can really clearly see in the data how the tactics changed, because first, in the first weeks of the invasion, it was mostly casualties among professional military units like airborne units or Marines, that kind of stuff. Then came casualties - higher casualties among volunteers.

Then, starting from the autumn of 2022, huge numbers of casualties of inmates that were recruited by Wagner Group, the infamous PMC. And a lot of casualties of mobilized soldiers from December because in late September of 2022, a partial - so-called partial mobilization started in Russia. And approximately two months after that, we started seeing big, huge casualties among the mobilized soldiers.

MARTÍNEZ: Now, the 50,000 dead are Russian casualties that your organization has confirmed. And actually, your organization suspects the number could be twice as high. Why?

GOLUBOVSKY: Yeah, well, the 50,000, we know all of them by name, right?

MARTÍNEZ: Wow, OK.

GOLUBOVSKY: And we confirmed their names. And obviously, from the very start we understood that that's not everyone, every Russian soldier that died, because not all are reported. Not all cemeteries could be visited by volunteers and so on. We did, together with another independent news outlet, Meduza, we came up with a methodology to estimate the overall amount based on the probate registry. And that gives a number of approximately twice more than 50,000.

MARTÍNEZ: Really quick, one last thing. Has there been any reaction from Russian officials to your data or from citizens inside Russia?

GOLUBOVSKY: Well, the citizens, they, you know, support us with information about casualties and read our updates.

MARTÍNEZ: OK.

GOLUBOVSKY: And the government just keeps silent and sometimes bans information about casualties. That's it.

MARTÍNEZ: OK. Mika Golubovsky is an editor with Mediazona, an independent news outlet banished from Russia. Mika, thank you very much.

GOLUBOVSKY: Thank you.

MARTÍNEZ: We asked for comment from the Russian embassy in the U.S. but have not heard back.
