Although each of these Great Barrier Reef tours offer different destinations and experiences, there is one main choice to make when selecting an outer reef cruise. Do you want to take a cruise that visits a pontoon or not? What’s the difference? A pontoon trip allows you to leave the boat and enjoy shaded seating and meals on a permanently anchored pontoon. Non-swimmers will enjoy a pontoon trip, thanks to the range of above-water activities.

A boat trip takes you to and from and the reef, visiting between two and three different reef sites (pending the operator) with water entry directly from the boat itself. These trips are not recommended for non-swimmers.

Pontoon trips are generally more expensive, but have more inclusions: boat trips are cheaper and allow you to visit more reef sites. More on this as follows.

Cairns' Outer Great Barrier Reef Boat Trips

Cairns Outer Great Barrier Reef boat trips are generally cheaper than the outer reef pontoon trips. Travel time is generally between 90-minutes and 2-hours and you visit at least two different reef sites during the day. Each operator has different moorings; some of the reefs you may visit include Saxon, Hastings, Paradise, Milln, Moore, Flynn, Thetford, Sudbury, Channel and more. All are within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and World Heritage Area.

Try a Scuba Dive

Inclusions on these trips vary. Some boats have glass bottom boat tours, some offer guided snorkelling and some do not. All trips include lunch and complimentary tea and coffee on arrival. These trips are suitable for snorkelers and divers and allow you to explore the Great Barrier Reef in the open water. These trips are not suitable for non-swimmers.

Maximum water depth is generally around 30m and coral gardens come to within metres of the surface. You can expect to see colourful corals and many different types, shapes and sizes of Great Barrier Reef fish.

Cairns’ Outer Reef Pontoons provide the perfect day tour for families, non-swimmers, motion sickness sufferers, the elderly, mobility impaired visitors and people wanting a variety of reef activities in the one tour. Why?

All three of Cairns’ outer reef pontoons have child friendly swimming enclosures and provide child-sized wetsuits and snorkelling equipment. The boats and pontoons are pram friendly and some even have change tables.

I'm terrified of the water but I didn't want to leave Oz without seeing the Reef. All the crew on passions were so helpful, professional and encouraging. Snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef

Ideal for everyone! All snorkellers will be given a pre-briefing on how to snorkel to ensure their comfort in the water and to maximise their enjoyment.

There are buoyancy vests and noodles for those who would like more support. Snorkel guides will also help you with your equipment once you are in the water.

You will be amazed at the underwater world of ornate coral structures and brightly coloured marine life. 

Reef education and guided Eco Reef Talk

Learning about the reef and its inhabitants will really bring your experience alive.

There is a guided Eco Reef Talk in the underwater observatory and a reef education presentation given on your day.

If you want to get wet and up close, then join a guided snorkel tour (extra cost); your guide will take you on an educational snorkel, introducing you to and teaching you about the exotic marine life that inhabits the Great Barrier Reef.

Semi-submersible submarine tour Great Barrier Reef 

Going down! It feels like you are on a submarine but you will be sitting just under the surface of the water in a viewing gallery whilst the captain steers the vessel from above.

You will glide gently around the coral bommies (coral mountains) and see the amazing formation of the corals.

• View the colourful darting reef fish and vibrant angelfish.
• Observe the fascinating parrotfish (they excrete sand!).

Your captain will also point out a host of exciting sights as you take this underwater journey of discovery.

Optional upgrade activities

Introductory scuba diving (optional activity)

Yes, you can go scuba diving without a certification (subject to a medical questionnaire) .

What better place to experience your first scuba dive than in the crystal blue waters of the Great Barrier Reef?

You will be taken out in a small group (maximum 4) with an experienced diving instructor.

After a pre-dive briefing and some basic skills, you will descend with your instructor slowly to a shallow depth (maximum 12m 36ft) for your dive which lasts approximately 30 minutes.

This is the nearest you will feel to being a fish underwater. You won’t want to come up! 

Certified scuba diving (subject to availability and booked on the day; optional activity)

If you are a certified diver, you can dive straight off the pontoon platform to explore the incredible underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef.

You’ll be able to experience up to three dives in the day with a number of dive sites available from the pontoon to provide you with varied topography and underwater life.

An experienced Dive Instructor/Master will lead your dive, so stick with them and they'll show you all the hiding places for the best things to see.

Your maximum depth will be 18 metres (60 feet) as you swim amongst the gentle undulating coral gardens and peaks of the coral bommies.

Be surrounded by the exotic marine life of these iconic diving sites on the world famous Great Barrier Reef.

Scuba Doo underwater scooter (optional activity)

If you’re in the mood for something a little more exciting than snorkelling then Scuba Doo is for you!

The Outer Great Barrier Reef platform is the only place in Australia where you can cruise the reef on this amazing underwater scooter.

Suited to swimmers and non-swimmers alike*, you will be wearing a helmet like an astronaut as you ride on your underwater bike that resembles a wheel-less moped, and follow your guide on an underwater journey like no other.  

* must be over 12 years of age and subject to a medical questionnaire

Scenic helicopter flight (optional activity) 

Now that you have seen the reef from under the water, what better way to see it than from the sky?

Your helicopter ride will take you over the Norman Reef and 500ft above the amazing Great Barrier Reef.

You might spot turtles, sharks, manta rays and dolphins swimming below.

You can even fly from the pontoon back to Cairns.

The trip on the catamaran and the staff were really great. We also enjoyed the semi sub and underwater viewing. Just a bit dissapointing that the lunch seemed a bit chaotic and nowhere to sit on the pontoon as tables taken over with other guests bags etc. We ate on the catamaran- thought we would have been able to relax on a sun bed but that was the same.

Number of Steps

There is a ramp to access the vessel~|~there is a motorised chair lift to enable a transfer between upper and lower decks~|~There are no wheelchair accessable toilets on board the boat or pontoon.

Onboard Access

At the Outer Barrier Reef there are ramp facilities from the vessel to the floating platform. There are no disabled facilities on the platform and the platform does have decking whereby wheelchair wheels can get stuck. Access to the underwater observatory, swim platforms and semi-submersible is by stair only

About Cairns Reef Tours

Cairns is the gateway to the great barrier reef.

Cairns is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. There are many ways to experience the Reef from Cairns, whether you're a swimmer or non-swimmer, diver or beginner snorkeller, travelling with family or looking for that perfect romantic escape, there's an experience to suit all budgets and requirements.

Most outer reef trips from Cairns are a full day experience including all snorkel/dive equipment and lunch plus morning/afternoon tea.

Reef Tour Family Pricing We offer unique rates for families on all Cairns Great Barrier Reef tour experiences. Family rates are generally based on the following:

• Infants (3 Years & Under) travel free
• Children (4 - 14 years) Half Price
• Family (2 Adults & 2 Children) 1 Child travels free

Family pricing may change slightly depending on the tour options you choose. On Evolution 16 year olds are still considered children. Some dive operators do not have family rates. ​Please check the booking form for up to date family pricing for your group.

The Reef Fleet Terminal is the main check-in point for all reef trips. Most Reef Operators will have a desk inside the terminal where you will check in and collect your boarding pass. The Terminal is located at 1 Spence Street Cairns, which is next to the Shangri-La Hotel at The Pier Shopping Centre.

Some reef trips board directly onto the vessel, you will be advised details on booking, along with your boarding/check in time.

Coach transfers from your accommodation can be arranged or if you're travelling with 3 or more people we recommend taking a taxi or uber as hotel transfers organised by the operators are charged per person.

Hotel Transfers & Parking

Hotel Transfers Accommodation Transfers are available for all Reef Tours. When booking you will be given the option to selct Self Drive or Select your property from a list. The prices for the transfers will vary depending on the location of your accommodation. If you are staying at an Airbnb or private house find the closest holiday apartments or hotel and select it as your pickup point.

Parking for the Day For self-drivers, Council parking is available at The Pier for about $10 for the day. There is also all day parking at the outdoor carparks located near the Cruise Liner Terminal on Wharf Street, about two blocks away. The price for the day is $4 and it is just a 2 minute walk along the Esplanade to the Reef Fleet Terminal & Marina.

Cairns Reef Tour Times

If you would like a later start, the latest departure from Cairns to the Outer Reef is the Great Adventures Pontoon experience departing at 10.30am with check-in at 9.45am. If you have a flight departing on the evening of your reef trip the earliest return into Cairns after an Outer Reef tour is 4.30pm with Evolution.

There is no half day outer Reef Tour option from Cairns as the closest Outer Reef is 90 minutes cruise.

When to Book Book as early as you can. Pre-booking is essential. Cairns Reef Tours are frequently booked out. Please do not turn up without a booking on the day. Book early for school holidays and through winter as during peak times reef trips can be completely full for the next five days.

Date changes are fine as long as you give us at least 24 hours notice

Checking Availability & Booking We offer a live connection to all the local Cairns Reef Operators. Your seat is instantly guaranteed when you book here.

Check-in & Mobile Tickets On the day of the reef tour you will either check in at the Reef Fleet Terminal or make your way directly to the vessel at the Marlin Marina. In most cases you will not need a ticket as your name will be on the days manifest when you check in. If you need to show a ticket you can simply present the e-mail confirmation you received on your mobile device.

Snorkelling On The Great Barrier Reef

Snorkelling gear is included with all of our Reef Tours. Snorkeling is the best and easiest way to see the reef because 90% of its diversity occurs within 4 metres of the surface.

It doesn't take long to get the hang of it and for beginners a crew member is usually on hand to offer tuition on gear use and snorkel techniques.

Snorkelling offers all swimmers, regardless of their skill level, the opportunity to see this diverse eco-system of the Great Barrier Reef up close.

A selection of buoyancy aids (foam noodles, life jackets and wetsuits) allows you to float effortlessly over rich, colourful coral gardens, and snorkel guides are usually available to guide you through the natural maze of beautiful coral and fish and point out all the 'cool stuff'.

Intro Dives Introductory diving, also resort diving are dives where people without diver training or certification can experience scuba diving under the guidance of a diving instructor. Intro dives are offered on most reef tour from cairns and available anyone over 12 years. The dive usually has a duration of 20 minutes.

Participants are briefed on the way out to the reef site to ensure both an exciting and safe first dive.

Certified Dives Divers will love the dramatic drop offs, swim throughs and bommies. Buddy up with a dive partner, or tag along with a dive guide for a grand tour of all the best spots on the reef.

Great Barrier Reef Pontoons

There are 5 Reef Pontoons accessible from Cairns. Pontoons give you space and are suitable for all ages and especially ideal for families.

A pontoon is a spacious floating reef platform located at the outer barrier reef.

Pontoons Generally Feature, sundecks and undercover areas for relaxing and lunch, change rooms and snorkel access platforms. Glass Bottom Boat & Semi-Sub Tour departure points.

Some pontoons have built in under water observatories and special children's enclosed swimming areas. The Sunlover Moore Reef pontoon has a waterslide.

Pontoon Reef Tours offer a range of activities for swimmers and non-swimmers it means that everyone can experience the very best of the Great Barrier Reef.

Glass Bottom Boat Tours

Explore the wonders of the reef from the comfort of a glass bottom boat tour.

Hovering over beautiful coral gardens, giant clams and schools of colourful reef fish, a glass bottom boat is ideal for kids, non-swimmers and for those who are wanting to learn more about the reef.

Tours usually last around 30 minutes with a running commentary by a marine biologist. Most pontoon and island experiences include the option of taking a glass bottom boat tour.

Semi-submarine Tours

A semi-submersible coral viewing tour treats passengers to a divers view of the coral reef and marine life.

Sitting 1m below the water level, passengers can enjoy gliding through coral gardens and along the edge of coral drop bommies spotting a huge array of colourful reef fish.

With large viewing windows and air conditioning, these semi-submersible tours provide a divers perspective of the reef in comfort and without getting wet!

Tours are usually take around 30 minutes and are fully guided by an on-board marine biologist.

Wheely Friendly Reef Tours

The Great Barrier Reef is wheely friendly from Cairns. Here are a few experiences that offer wheelchair access.

Reef Magic There is ramp access from the wharf to the vessel and vessel to the Marine World platform. However, passengers are required to negotiate at least one set of stairs on the vessel depending on tides and loading position so assistance may be required. The Reef Magic II catamaran has wide isles and a wheelchair accessible toilet & shower. Access to the water, coral viewing vessels, underwater observatory and sundeck all require stairs to be negotiated and would require a carer to be present if unable to walk unassisted.

Great Adventures Outer Reef Great Adventures vessel "Reef King" does have a motorised chair lift to enable transfer between the upper and lower decks, however it is recommended that passengers have some mobility or assistance to transfer from their wheelchair. Toilets on the vessel and outer reef are not wheelchair accessible. There are ramp facilities from the vessel to the floating platform. There are no disabled facilities on the platform and the platform does have decking where wheelchair wheels may get stuck. Access to the underwater observatory, swim platforms and semi-submersible is by stairs only.

Quicksilver Cruises Quicksilver VIII is the most suitable vessel for wheelchair passengers, however there are occasions when this vessel may not operate which is often not known till 24 hours prior to departure, so it is recommended to reconfirm your booking prior to travel. On Quicksilver VIII there is an oversized toilet cubicle suitable for most wheelchair passengers. Quicksilver V also has a wheelchair accessible toilet. At the platform a chair lift enables disabled passengers to be lowered into the water to enjoy snorkelling. There are ramp facilities from the vessel to the floating platform, however access to the underwater observatory, swim platforms and semi-submersible coral viewing vessel is by stairs only.

Sunlover Cruises Sunlover Cruises is very well set-up to accommodate wheelchairs. They have multiple entrance points onto the vessel, as well as a dedicated wheelchair table on the main deck, wheel chair ramps to get over door jams and very experienced and willing crew. In some circumstances, they may be able to offer glass bottom boat rides and even SCUBA Diving! but cannot guarantee this every time.

Choosing A Good Day To Visit The Reef

Visiting the Great Barrier Reef is an unforgettable experience, and the weather plays a significant role visibility and comfort on your tour. Here are some things to factor in when choosing a day for your tour to the Reef.

Wind Speed: This is the main factor which will influence visibility. Low wind speeds are preferable, ideally less than 15 knots / 27km. Lower wind speeds result in calmer sea conditions, which means better visibility underwater and a more pleasant boat ride to and from the reef. Calm, sunny days following a period without heavy rain being ideal.

Sunshine: Sunny days enhance the colors of the coral and marine life, making your experience more vibrant. However, it's important to protect yourself against sunburn and dehydration, so be sure to apply waterproof sunscreen and drink plenty of water.

Season: The best time to visit the Great Barrier Reef is during the Australian winter and spring, from June to October. This period avoids the wet season (December to March), which can bring heavy rains and lower visibility due to run-off from the land.

Tides: Low tide can be the best time for snorkeling in shallow reef areas, as the coral and marine life are closer to the surface. However, some areas are best at high tide to avoid strong currents and to ensure there's enough water depth for comfortable snorkeling or diving.

We were well looked after on the ferry to Dunk Island and it is well worth spending the money to go to spend time on the island and enjoy the beautiful rain forrest and beaches. When you book a day tour to the Great Barrier Reef, you may notice an additional fee called the environmental management charge (EMC). This fee is a part of most commercial activities, including tours, that operate within the Great Barrier Reef

When you book a day tour to the Great Barrier Reef, you may notice an additional fee called the environmental management charge (EMC). This fee is a part of most commercial activities, including tours, that operate within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park under a permit issued by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

When you participate in a tourist activity on the Great Barrier Reef, you are usually responsible for paying this charge to the tour operator. The tour operator then forwards the fee to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

Why do you have to pay the fee?

The environmental management charge plays a crucial role in the day-to-day management and long-term resilience of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The funds collected through this charge are directly used for the management and conservation efforts of the marine park.

Additionally, when you provide visitation information along with the environmental management charge, it greatly helps the Reef Authority and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) in developing sustainable management plans for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

By paying the environmental management charge, you are contributing to the protection and preservation of this magnificent natural wonder, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy its beauty.

OceanQuest has had a whooping $700K spent on her in the latest refit. She has been freshly painted,  fabulously rebranded and has some additional new soft furnishings - we are ready take our guests on a unique and memorable reef experience with our flexible daily departures and PADI course options.

OceanQuest is a 36 metre catamaran over 3 decks with the capacity to sleep 48 customers overnight.

3 Whale shark encounter at Moore Reef

Passengers with Great Adventures had a rare encounter while they were seated in the semi-submarine at Moore Reef.

More often associated with the northern waters of Western Australia, whale shark encounters on the Great Barrier Reef are quite rare.

“We wouldn’t normally expect to see them here at this time of year. As plankton feeders you would expect likelier sightings around seasonal plankton blooms and coral spawning.”

As the largest fish in the sea reaching lengths of over 12 metres, whale sharks are docile fish feeding mostly on plankton, crab larvae and jellyfish, which they scoop up with their colossal gaping mouths while swimming close to the water’s surface. They are listed as a vulnerable species and prior to the mid 1980s there were less than 350 confirmed reports of whale sharks world-wide.

After nearly two and a half years, we're excited to announce Ocean Spirit's Michaelmas Cay cruise is recommencing from 17 September. The beautiful 32 metre (105ft) sailing catamaran is undergoing refit to be ship shape and in top condition to welcome guests aboard.

Sail, snorkel, dive, relax. A day with Ocean Spirit can be as leisurely or active as you choose. Snorkel from the cay’s protected shallow waters, view the corals from a glass bottom boat or take some time to observe the island’s fascinating birds. Michaelmas Cay is a National Park and very important protected sanctuary for migratory seabirds, perfect for keen bird watchers. The reef surrounding the cay is renowned for an abundance of giant clams and sea turtles amongst a myriad of colourful marine life.

Throughout the day, the “beach buggy” transfers guests between Ocean Spirit and the beach. To protect this special bird sanctuary, access on the cay is limited to the roped beach area. Optional activites include introductory scuba diving and marine biologist guided snorkel tours to learn much more about the reef and the creatures that inhabit it.

Cairns premier great barrier reef & island tours operating two exclusive reef tours "ocean free" & "ocean freedom".

Perry has been in the dive industry in Cairns and managing dive operations on 4 vessels since 1988, including Ocean Free since 1992, when he met Taryn. Since 1992 they both worked the boats and purchased Ocean Free (a 16.5m schooner) in 1996. Having many years of experience in the industry, Ocean Free quickly became a well-established and respected company amongst local agents and the marine industry.

They then bought their second vessel Ocean Freedom in 2005 and after a year’s total refurbishment, the luxury 20m cruiser was launched in mid 2006. Ocean Freedom underwent another million-dollar refurbishment in February 2008, changing from the previous jet engines to props, re-spraying, extending the teak snorkel and dive deck by 3m, making it the most spacious snorkel back deck in Cairns. The new look, faster Ocean Freedom receives great reviews in the industry. Ocean Freedom now cruises at 23 knots and arrives at the reef in an hour, giving guests 6 hours on the reef.

With the operation of two vessels it was necessary to re-brand the products to encompass the two vessels under one trading name. This, plus the company’s commitment to running very personalised, low guest number tours with excellent customer service, lead to their new company name Cairns Premier Reef & Island Tours.

In 2014 both boats underwent major, million-dollar refurbishments, with new engines, decking, seating, bulkheads and on Ocean Free new mast rigging and sails. In mid 2023 Ocean Free was fitted with a new propeller and Ocean Freedom had another  major refurbishment with 2 new engines, new electrics, new ladder, cushions, and carpet.

Both boats undergo annual cosmetic refits to ensure they look their best at all times.

Snorkeling and diving can be a bit intimidating if you’ve never done it before – even more so if it’s in a foreign location. However, if you want to experience one of the most incredible world wonders up close, look no further than this first tour!

The Great Barrier Reef Snorkeling and Diving Cruise from Cairns tour  offers full training and instruction to ensure everyone stays safe and having fun while exploring the underwater wonders.

Starting at 8:00 am, we met up at the fleet terminal with our professional, attentive guides who were there to take us out to two different reefs.

You also have the option of upgrading to a diving and helicopter ride as well, though it  is  extra (though very much worth it!). We chose to add the helicopter ride which was about 10 minutes of breathtaking scenery out over the expansive, clear waters.

Once we hopped onboard our vessel for the day, we were served a delicious barbecue spread complete with fresh fish, steak, pastas, prawns, salads, and much more!

Our guides used their expertise to select 6 different reef locations based on our weather, time of day, and water conditions. It was amazing getting to don our snorkeling gear and head underwater to watch majestic manta rays and sweet sea turtles, along with tons of other amazing creatures!

We had the option of including the additional experience of a glass bottom boat ride, which I did not take but I do think it would be perfect for those uncomfortable with swimming while snorkeling.

As we returned back to the mainland, they provided us with tasty cheese and tropical fruit platters while our crew provided live music and entertainment! It was such a fun, memorable day, and that all paired with the natural wonders, was simply amazing.

Queensland, Australia is one of my favorite cities in the country, though you can’t visit without exploring the Great Barrier Reef!

There are countless tours as you could probably imagine, but if you want to see the natural wonder in style and comfort, I have just the tour for you.

The Ocean Freedom Great Barrier Reef Luxury Snorkel and Dive Cruise  perfectly balances education, awareness, thrills, and good food in one full-day adventure that I absolutely will partake in again!

We had to wake up at the crack of dawn to meet up with our guide and rest of the crew early in the morning, boarding a luxurious catamaran equipped with state-of-the-art amenities, spacious sun decks, shaded lounges, and much more.

This is definitely a cruise experience that offers relaxation and indulgence with a full bar and all kinds of refreshing drinks during the entire trip!

The crew was so much fun, so entertaining, and helpful, though I particularly appreciated the guided commentary by the Marine Naturalist about the sealife we encountered both in and out of the water!

Onboard, they had plenty of top-of-the-line snorkeling and diving gear (additional cost for diving), and we were able to explore at 2 different locations in highly-protected zones.

The snorkeling tour with our Marine Naturalist was so insightful, and I learned so much about the marine life and their behavior in their natural habitat. Seeing the Wonder Wall, hard and soft corals, reef fish, and giant clams was so amazing, though I do wish I’d snapped some videos!

Back on board our catamaran, I relaxed in the sun and enjoyed some freshly-made coffee with a Danish pastry to accompany it before lunchtime. They even included fresh fruit, cheese, crackers, and cake on our ride back to the mainland.

Every step of the way, I was so enamored and inspired by the beautiful world and people around us – definitely don’t pass this opportunity up!

With comfortable amenities, panoramic views, and plenty of space to stretch out and enjoy the scenery, it’s the ideal vantage point to really appreciate the surrounding turquoise waters.

The marine biologist presentation beforehand was incredibly insightful, and we learned how this complex barrier reef ecosystem is home to over 1,500 types of tropical fish and a whopping 400 types of coral!

After that, we stopped to take a snorkeling trip into the sheltered coral lagoon as well as a guided snorkel safari with the marine biologist!

However, you can choose to hang out on the deck and stay warm and dry while still enjoying the reef from the semi-submersible boat or an underwater observatory!

I thought that was super cool that they offered so many different ways to see the reef, even offering the additional glass bottom boat tour or Helmet Dive!

If you  do  choose to stay on the sundeck, I recommend buying a session with the onboard massage therapist and really let the stress melt away in the middle of the picture-perfect waters!

As I mentioned previously, I feel this tour is ideal for people of all ages and swimming skills, so please don’t hesitate to try this amazing tour! Oh, and not only that, but they even served us hot and cold buffet lunch, morning and afternoon tea, and much more!

Flee Winter’s Chill | Get prepared for the 2024 Reef to Reef 4-day Stage Race

Visualise this; In the heart of winter, when the outside world is chilly and rain has saturated the trails, there exists a tropical oasis up north in Cairns.

Here, the thermometer reads a delightful 26 degrees, the sun reigns supreme, and the trails await, dry and ready for adventure. Picture yourself with a cold beer in hand, soaking up the warmth after a hard day’s riding.

Looking for an excuse to escape winter? Look no further than the iconic Reef to Reef stage race, now in its fifth year of glory. From July 25th to 28th, 2024, the lush hills of Cairns in Northern Queensland will play host to an unforgettable four-day racing spectacle. Clear your schedules and prepare for an experience like no other!

Updates for Reef to Reef 2024

Following the 2023 Reef to Reef some large news dropped. Ironman — the previous owner of the Reef to Reef, Port to Port and Cape to Cape, had sold the first two events to Event Management Solutions Australia.

The team at EMS, which organised the 2019 UCI World Championship and Enduro World Series events in Tasmania, are the experts when it comes to large-scale mountain bike events and delivering an event like no other.

With the Reef to Reef and Port to Port going seperate ways from their sister race, the Cape to Cape, the Triple-Crown trifecta series is no longer in an official sense.

According to Ian Harwood from EMS, this also means the races will no longer be qualifiers for the Cape Epic, at least for this year anyway, so riders looking to qualify will have to head abroad. Another great excuse for a holiday? We think so!

Harwood tells Flow the Reef to Reef for 2024 will feature a number changes, including a brand new eMTB category, a returning venue, new food and beverage options at the finish line, and a new Day 1 prologue/hot-seat racing format.

Fear not, the event will maintain the classic features of the Reef to Reef we know and love such as the flowing singletrack at Smithfield MTB park and the final stage finishing on the beach in Port Douglas. The full four day stage race can be completed either solo or in pairs, requiring pairs to remain within 2 minutes of each other through the entire race, a format which is becoming increasingly popular in stage racing. 

The eMTB community have been asking and the team at EMS have been listening, which is why they are introducing an eMTB specific category for 2024. Racers will compete alongside the rest of the field and will likely lead out the race, but it certainly won’t be a cruise in the park even with a motor assisting on the climbs. 

Their other acquisition, the Port to Port, based in Newcastle, NSW, has unfortunately suffered from a rough few years, with the pandemic and consecutive years of flooding forcing cancellation after cancellation. With this in mind, the team at EMS is planning a huge return for the event but needs a little extra time to get things together. Hence, it will not be running for 2024 but will return for 2025 — stay tuned folks!

Reef to Reef Prologue| Smithfield MTB Park | 6km, 150m vert

To kick things off for 2024, there will be a prologue-style race based in Smithfield MTB Park. The course will be short and punchy, 6km long with approximately 150m of climbing, and is largely based on the UCI Master World Championships course set to take place on the 19th of May 2024 — including the infamous Jacobs Ladder. 

The race will be run in a hot-seat style format, with racers tackling the course in ascending order, with EMS seeding riders within their category based on past race results and order of expected pace. This format is most similar to what we typically see in DH racing or time trials, albeit with a few tweaks for the format, and will be sure to provide some exciting racing!  Harwood says the prologue is set to run in the afternoon, giving riders the opportunity to travel up to Cairns in the morning to make the journey a little easier logistically. 

Reef to Reef Stage One | Smithfield MTB Park | 30km, 700m vert

Day two of the 2024 edition of the Reef to Reef will see racers tackle the remainder of the Smithfield MTB Park , with 30kms of singletrack and around 700m of climbing.

Having hosted UCI World Cups, UCI World Champs, and the home to Crankworx Cairns , the pedigree of the terrain and trails at Smithfield Mountain Bike Park is undeniable. Racers can expect a healthy mix of tech and flow and will keep everyone on their toes. The dirt is primarily hard-pack with a sprinkling of rock, with locals suggesting the redder the dirt the slipperier it gets, especially after a touch of rain. 

Reef to Reef Stage Two Atherton MTB Park | 60km, 1000m vert

A returning classic of the Reef to Reef, for 2024, the race will head back out to the Atherton MTB Park situated 1.5hrs southwest of Cairns, with over 55kms of primary hand-cut singletrack.

The stage is a big one, covering 60km and ~1000m of climbing, with a mixture of singletrack and fire roads zig-zagging in and out of the bike park.

The hills bordering the Silvia Valley rise approximately 300 meters, offering extended descents that traverse through three or four distinct topographic zones. We checked out Atherton MTB Park and caught up with the club President back in 2022, a worthy read if you’re chasing a sneak preview of what is to come. 

Reef to Reef Stage Three, Triple-R | Mount Molloy to Port Douglas | 51km, 600m

The finale of the Reef to Reef is a true classic and a highlight for all racers. After an early start in Mount Molloy riders descend down to Four Mile Beach in Port Douglas via the infamous Bump Track where the party awaits. The day will consist of around 51kms of riding and despite starting up in the range and finishing on the beach, will still consist of around 600m of climbing. 

The final day of the Reef to Reef also doubles as the Triple-R single-day race (formerly known as RRR, or Rural Rainforest Reef), which has become a staple event in Australia’s mountain bike calendar. 2024 marks the 32nd edition. Racers can choose from the classic 36km course or the longer 51km course, both of which include the Bump Track and spectacular beach finish in Port Douglas. 

Reef to Reef Race Logistics & FAQ’s

Logistically, there is a bit to consider when tackling the Reef to Reef as the locations are a short drive apart.

The team at EMS recommend staying in Cairns for the first two days of racing, and relocating to Port Douglas for the remainder of the race. There are a huge range of accommodation options available from budget motels to fancy apartments, rest assured there will be something to suit any preference. Alternatively, camping or renting a motorhome has proven very popular in previous years, and there are plenty of caravan parks with a full suite of facilities in both locations. 

While this is technically an XC marathon race, you can totally ride it on your trail bike or enduro bike — we’ve even seen one fellow ride it on rigid fat bike. Most h owever typically most people bring XC (100-120mm) hardtails or dual-suspension mountain bikes.

The race village will have all of the typical inclusions such as registration, information, first-aid, along with bike mechanics and some tasty food and beverage options to choose from.

There will be aid stations at around the halfway mark on each day, but we do not recommend relying on these. Each rider should carry around 2-3L of water in a hydration pack. 

Things to do that don’t involve riding?

One of the best things about stage racing is that once the day’s racing is all said and done, there is still plenty of daylight left to explore the area, even if your legs have turned to jelly. Tropical Northern Queensland is packed full of things to see and do, whether it’s relaxing on the beach after a hard day’s riding or snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef; you’ll have zero issues filling in the downtime between races. 

Acting as the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns offers activities ranging from snorkelling and scuba diving tours to white water rafting and stand-up paddle boarding.

North Queensland might not be on everyone’s wine radar, but it’s a hidden gem among Australia’s many wine regions. Instead of the usual suspects on the wine rack, winemakers in this tropical paradise are turning to exotic fruits to craft their wines, ports, and liqueurs. Picture lush orchards brimming with mangoes, bananas, lychees, pineapples and passionfruit.

It’s a departure from traditional vineyards, yet rest assured, sipping these creations won’t feel like you’re diving into a fruit bowl.

Cairns also boasts a dynamic brewery scene that’s as diverse as it is exciting, with prime locations peppered throughout this tropical paradise. From waterfront spots to hidden gems nestled in laneways, you’ll be sure to find a spot for a cold drink following a hard days racing. 

With the race wrapping up in tropical Port Douglas, you’ll be surrounded by a range of activities and some of the sleepiest beaches in the country. Take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters of Mossman Gorge, surrounded by ancient rainforest, and embark on guided walks to learn about indigenous culture and history, or explore one of the world’s most incredible natural wonders with snorkelling or diving tours to the Great Barrier Reef, departing from Port Douglas.

This is the best time for a dive at the Great Barrier Reef

E ver wanted to visit the largest coral reef system in the world? Most experienced scuba divers will agree that the Great Barrier Reef is one of the most jaw-dropping places to dive on the planet.

But when should you visit?

Peak season gets crowded, but if you leave it too late, the weather starts to turn, and the visibility isn't great – not to mention the risk of box jellyfish!

If you're planning to visit Australia, this post will show you the best time to dive in the Great Barrier Reef and what you can expect on your trip.

Best Time Of Year To Dive Great Barrier Reef

The best time to dive in the Great Barrier Reef is between June and October. This is peak season when the weather is warm, rain is uncommon, and the waters are calm and clear.

The downside is that diving tours fill up quickly, and there are a lot of crowds on the beaches and in local restaurants.

If you want to avoid the crowds, the low season is between November and May. However, there is a high chance of rain, the water visibility isn't as good, and deadly box jellyfish will be floating around – not great conditions for diving!

What To Expect When Scuba Diving in the Great Barrier Reef

The great thing about visiting the Great Barrier Reef is that you can take an intro diving tour without any experience. The crew onboard will give you all the gear you need and show you the basics of diving safely.

If you do decide to go on a scuba dive tour, an instructor will be with you the entire time to show you the route and keep you as safe as possible.

Most tours also have an underwater photographer to snap pictures of you and the wildlife while you're diving, so you won't have to worry about investing in an underwater camera.

If you're an experienced diver with a certification, you can also go diving without an instructor, but you'll need to have all your own gear and rent a boat to take you out.

Where to go Scuba Diving in Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is about 1,429 miles long , stretching across 133,000 square miles, so there are a lot of opportunities to go diving.

If you've never been before, here are some of the top dive sites you should consider visiting.

Agincourt Reef

This reef is on the northern end near Cairns. It's a great spot for beginners and has plenty of options for snorkeling and diving on the edge of the continental shelf.

At Agincourt Reef, you'll see tropical fish, sea turtles, and even the odd reef shark. This is also the spot where you can visit the Blue Wonder Wall, where the coral garden drops vertically for over 40 meters.

Most tours to Agincourt Reef depart from Port Douglas, but a few tours will pick you up directly from any Cairns accommodation.

SS Yongala Shipwreck

Travel about an hour south of Cairns, and you'll find Magnetic Island, home to the SS Yongala shipwreck that sank in 1911. This is Australia's largest and most intact shipwreck and is now protected by legislation.

The only way to visit the shipwreck is with a licensed operator, but it's well worth the trip. You'll get to see eagle rays, manta rays, turtles, and even sharks that live around the wreck.

Yongala Dive is the most well-known licensed operator that organizes tours to the shipwreck if you're interested in going.

Whitsunday Islands

The Whitsundays is a group of 74 mostly uninhabited tropical islands. You can take day cruises from Airlie Beach to take on this incredible scuba dive tour.

Manta ray and batfish call the waters around the islands home, but you'll also see underwater cliffs, submerged offshore reefs (bommies), and flat-topped coral pinnacles.

Museum of Underwater Art

Yes, the Great Barrier Reef has its very own underwater museum for divers to peruse. This is where you'll get to see the world-renowned Coral Greenhouse Structure, a 30-foot stainless steel structure that helps dissipate the underwater currents.

The Underwater Museum is just off the coast of Townsville in John Brewer Reef, and many local tour guides have trips out to the dive site. Although you can see the museum by snorkeling, you can't beat the experience of diving down to explore every beautiful detail.

Capricorn and Bunker Reefs

Toward the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, you'll get to meet whales, nesting turtles, and rare birds at the Capricorn and Bunker Reefs.

The water is shallow, so it's perfect for beginner divers, and it's teeming with marine life. If you're not up for diving, you can snorkel without a guide to see the tropical fish, turtles, and manta rays swimming nearby.

But diving near Lady Elliot Island and Lady Musgrave Island is the best place to see huge fish, coral canyons, and marine turtles that nest on land.

What You'll See When Scuba Diving In Great Barrier Reef

It's hard to picture the sheer amount of marine life surrounding the Great Barrier Reef. If you're a lover of ocean creatures, you won't be disappointed!

• Between June and July is the best time to see a dwarf minke whale gathering.
• Also, through the summer, you'll see beaked whales, sperm whales, and bottlenose dolphins.
• Grouper, cod, and beam fish are also common – and they get pretty big in this part of the world!
• If you love sharks, you might be lucky enough to spot a silky, silvertip, grey reef, or whitetip shark – all of which call the Reef home.

Tips For Scuba Diving In Great Barrier Reef

Visiting the Great Barrier Reef is a unique experience, so if this is your first trip, here are some helpful tips to make it a great one.

• Get your scuba diving certification before you go so you can take full advantage of all the trips on offer.
• When you choose a dive company, make sure they have permits for multiple scuba dive sites. There could be an issue with overcrowding at the one you planned on visiting, so you want to make sure they can switch to a different one if they need to.
• Cairns is the most popular area, so it's usually the most crowded. Some less popular (but equally incredible) places to visit are Townsville, Port Douglas, and Cape York.
• If you have family members who don't want to dive, many tour operators allow people to join you on the boat and go snorkeling at the dive sites.
• If you want to try out underwater photography, most of the bigger boats have cameras for rent for around 80 AUD.
• If you're an experienced diver, plan a multi-day trip. This gives you more time to explore, and you'll get to visit multiple sites.
• Never touch the coral – it's a living organism, and the oils and creams on human skin can kill it.
• Make sure your travel insurance covers scuba diving – not all policies cover water sports.
• If you're a non-swimmer who wants to try scuba diving, be honest about your abilities with your instructor. They'll have flotation devices to get you started.

You'll find multiple dive shops in each area of the Great Barrier Reef, all offering different excursions. Here are a couple of the best ones if you're looking to book in advance.

Pro Dive Cairns 

This one covers the Cairns area and is known for trips exploring the most vibrant reefs. If you're an experienced diver, this is the team for you. However, non-divers and snorkelers are also welcome.

They have over 35 excursions on offer, including day trips from Cairns and Port Douglas, which are perfect for exploring as much of the Outer Great Barrier Reef as possible.

Adrenalin Snorkel and Dive

This dive shop is perfect for scuba divers of all levels (as well as snorkelers). They're based in Townsville and offer day trips to the Queensland coast and the Central Great Barrier Reef.

The sites visited range in depth from one to twenty meters, and they aim to help you spot as much marine life as possible on your reef experience.

Lady Musgrave Experience

This team is situated in Bundaberg and takes divers out on day trips aboard a high-speed catamaran. Once you're at the site, you'll get a full day of Great Barrier Reef diving in a protected coral lagoon that covers around 8km.

There's also a chance to sunbathe and relax on Lady Musgrave Island and go snorkeling around the shores. The Great Barrier Reef tour guides also offer a guided island walk where you can spot the turtles nesting during the hatching season.

At the moment the only thing we are 100% doing is a barrier reef tour when in Palm Cove. Otherwise I'm looking for ideas/suggestions of excursions, trips, things to do, places to see etc while we're in each area - baring in mind we'll have a 5YO with us and the time of year

So far we've found the below but not sure if we've missed anything and what would best given the time of year?

Melbourne - Penguin March, , Melb museum, Sky Deck, Sea life centre, Arthurs Seat sky lift, botanical gardens, Puffing Billy

Sydney - Blue mountains (unsure of best place with child), Taronga Zoo , Opera house & Bridge, Harbour tour, Featherdale wildlife park, Whale watching

Cairns/Palm cove - Barrier reef tour, Kuranda rainforest, Hartley's crocodile adventures

Obviously we wont be able to do everything so any advice or suggestions very welcome?

Currently looking at booking with Trail finders. So far I've heard mostly good things if anyone has experience using them? Only debate at the moment is how much we could save booking everything ourselves Vs the hassle/stress this adds.

In winter it will be very cold while you're watching the penguins, just keep that in mind. I'd recommend spending the day on Phillip Island if you are with your child.

Trailfinders is a reputable company, so if you're happy with the price they're quoting and it's within your budget, go for it. If you want to save some ££, then book flights and accommodation yourselves.

The Great Barrier Reef’s Mass Bleaching Disaster: Can Ecotourism Help?

The Great Barrier Reef is experiencing its fifth coral bleaching event in eight years. Surprisingly, tour operators are crucial in providing the research the government needs to save the treasure.

The Great Barrier Reef is in the midst of its worst mass bleaching event on record — a process in which warmer-than-usual water causes corals to expel their algae and turn white. Corals can survive a bleaching event, but it puts them under stress and makes them more susceptible to dying.

The tourism sector in the Great Barrier Reef has a long history of trying to lessen the harms of human impact. And in recent years, it has found that tourists can help.

The Reef brings more than 2 million tourists to the northeast coast of Queensland, Australia every year and it provides 60,000 jobs. The reef ecosystem boasts 400 types of coral, 1,500 species of fish, rare whale species and six of the world’s seven marine turtle species. It was designated a World Heritage site in 1981. However, the experience has been changing as the climate warms. 

UNESCO, the UN body that oversees World Heritage sites, suggested in 2021 that the site be added to its “In Danger” list. It avoided that designation but will be evaluated again in the second half of 2024.

A History of Conservation Tourism

Tourism in the Great Barrier Reef has been conservation-focused for decades — the industry is closely regulated, caps are put on locations and tour operators, and in the past few years, tour operators have increasingly shifted their focus to educating a concerned audience about how climate change is impacting the reef. 

“There have always been really conscious travelers,” said Mark Olsen, CEO of Tourism Tropical North Queensland, a non-governmental organization in Cairns, Australia. “But I think we’ve finally hit a mainstream audience, particularly travelers in their 20s and 30s who have grown up in a climate crisis and who understand that the natural world is under stress from human-induced effects.” 

Passions of Paradise is among a handful of operators that offer a science tour in which tourists can dive and help monitor coral health and nurseries. Other groups have glass bottom boats that show tourists where the reef is struggling, where corals have been relocated to help them thrive, and where life is still vibrant. 

One company, Reef Magic , offers visitors the chance to help replant corals outside the water. Replanting coral fragments is a highly regulated process, so most companies don’t have approval to let non-experts partake. 

But Olsen says that the industry is seeing a demand for tourists who want to help, and they’re working to respond by offering hands-on activities. 

Reef Research Relies on Tour Operators

Beyond tour activities, tour operators are crucial to the monitoring of the coral reef. Twenty-six tour operators are engaged in an initiative in which they provide surveys to the government. Between 2023 and 2024, they provided almost 3,500 reef health surveys to the government.

“There has always been strong involvement of tour operators in monitoring,” said Gianna Moscardo, a professor in Tropical Environments and Societies at James Cook University in Australia. 

But this involvement wasn’t fully recognized until the pandemic, when the lack of tourists meant the region wasn’t collecting enough data on the reef. The Australian government realized this and started providing extra funding to reef operators to continue monitoring.

Now, the groups are not only invested in monitoring, but they’re also pulling out all the stops to limit their negative impact. 

Between 2019 and 2021, at least six companies joined the Coral Nurture Initiative , a partnership between researchers and tour operators to conduct research and restore the reefs where they operate. 

An operator called Tropic Wings plans to introduce a dozen battery-powered vehicles, becoming the sole tour operator in Australia with fully electric coaches. Another operator, Sailaway Port Douglas , is using the first electric glass-bottom boats.  

“[Covid] was really a catalyst for more businesses to turn their enterprise toward conservation,” said Olsen. 

Scientists don’t see this as an all-in-one fix for the corals — the fossil fuel emissions from international tourism are central to the problem. However, the travel industry in the Great Barrier Reef has been an essential part of how the region collects data, and the emerging partnerships could set a standard for similarly vulnerable ecosystems around the world. 

“Tourism is what’s getting us the information that allows us to say, what’s the damage? What is the response? What corals are coming back?” said Olsen. “I think since December the tourism sector has collected 15,000 observations of the natural environment. It’s a proper partnership.”

Extreme coral bleaching could spell worst summer on record for Great Barrier Reef, authority says

Floods, cyclones, heat stress and predatory starfish contributing to impacts as fourth planet-wide bleaching event confirmed

The Great Barrier Reef is in the midst of what could be its worst summer on record with a widespread and extreme coral bleaching event coming on top of floods, two cyclones and outbreaks of coral-eating starfish, according to an official Australian government report.

The “summer snapshot” report released by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and the Australian Institute of Marine Science said: “Compared [with] previous summers, cumulative impacts have been much higher this summer and a widespread bleaching event is still unfolding.”

The report says 39% of 1,080 individual reefs surveyed from the air had experienced either very high (61-90% coral cover bleached) or extreme (more than 90%) levels of bleaching. Such high levels had been observed on reefs in all three regions of the park, which is a world heritage-listed natural wonder, but the most heat stress had occurred in the south.

The reef marine park, covering an area the size of Italy and including 3,000 individual reefs, is in the middle of a fifth mass bleaching in only eight years driven by global heating, with at least 10% of corals affected on 73% of reefs.

US government scientists confirmed this week that a fourth planet-wide coral bleaching event was under way , with many reefs in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans bleaching.

Dr David Wachenfeld, reef research program director at Aims, said: “We have seen [coral] mortality from flooding, from cyclones and from heat stress.”

Wachenfeld said while levels of heat stress had been at record levels on some parts of the reef, it would be many months before a clearer picture emerged of how many corals had died. In-water surveys are ongoing.

A separate report released by Aims said southern parts of the reef had experienced the highest levels of heat stress ever seen on the satellite record.

“Over all the sources of potential stress across the whole reef, yes, the exposure this summer is really high in most places,” said Wachenfeld. “The critical question is, how will that play out over the next year?”

What is coral bleaching?

Coral bleaching describes a process where the coral animal expels the algae that live in their tissues and give them their colour and much of their nutrients.

Without their algae, a coral’s white skeleton can be seen through their translucent flesh, giving a bleached appearance.

Mass coral bleaching over large areas, first noticed in the 1980s around the Caribbean, is caused by rising ocean temperatures.

Some corals also display fluorescent colours under stress when they release a pigment that filters light. Sunlight also plays a role in triggering bleaching.

Corals can survive bleaching if temperatures are not too extreme or prolonged.  But extreme marine heatwaves can kill corals outright.

Coral bleaching can also have sub-lethal effects, including increased susceptibility to disease and reduced rates of growth and reproduction.

Scientists say the gaps between bleaching events are becoming too short to allow reefs to recover.

Coral reefs are considered one of the planet’s ecosystems most at risk from global heating. Reefs support fisheries that feed hundreds of millions of people, as well as supporting major tourism industries.

The world’s biggest coral reef system – Australia’s Great Barrier Reef – has suffered seven mass bleaching events since 1998, of which five were in the past decade. 

Two cyclones moved across northern parts of the marine park this Australian summer, raising concerns .

Cyclones generate wave action that can damage and kill corals, as well as causing flooding in-land which can push freshwater, sediment and nutrients back out on to reefs near the shore. Some corals had died as a result, the report said.

An outbreak of the native crown-of-thorns starfish had also occurred in the southern section of the reef. The marine park authority has a program to anticipate and cull the starfish which, under an outbreak, can eat coral faster than it can grow.

Wachenfeld said: “Climate change is the by far the greatest threat to coral reefs globally and it’s a growing threat – and, not withstanding the objectives of the Paris climate agreement, we continue to emit greenhouse gases more than we used to.”

Australia is one of the largest exporters of fossil fuels – in particular coal and gas – in the world. On Wednesday, the prime minister, Anthony Albanese, visited a gas export hub in the Queensland city of Gladstone, on the coast next to the reef, to mark the 1,000th gas shipment from the site .

Dr Roger Beeden, the reef authority’s chief scientist, said it was too early to know if this summer would be the worst the reef had seen, “but it’s really significant”.

“This cumulative story is really important and across most of the reef we will see consequences,” he said.

Prof Terry Hughes, a coral bleaching expert at James Cook University in Queensland, said the evidence showed “this is the most widespread and most severe bleaching event on record”.

Data from the US government’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Coral Reef Watch shows the amount of heat stress accumulated on reefs around the world, using a measure called degree heating weeks.

Hughes, who has extensively studied previous bleaching events, said the NOAA data showed areas across the marine park – from Lizard Island in the north to Cairns and Port Douglas in the central area and the Whitsundays, Heron Island and Lady Elliot Island in the south – had seen heat stress between 9 and 12 DHWs.

“That’s lethal levels of heat exposure at tourism hotspots along the length of the GBR and we have never seen anything like that,” he said.

Anne Hoggett, co-director of the Australian Museum’s Lizard Island Research Station, said about 80% of the shallow Acropora corals that are known as staghorn and plate-like corals had already died.

She said: “It’s absolutely shocking. This has not ended yet and it remains to be seen how bad it will be.”

In July, the World Heritage committee is due to decide if the Great Barrier Reef should be placed on a list of sites in danger.
