DBS TravellerShield Plus Travel Insurance Review: Alluring Combination Of High Coverage, Flexibility And Low Premiums
Alevin Chan
DBS TravellerShield Plus stands as one of the best travel insurance plans on the market, with the uncanny ability to fit almost any type of itinerary. But unfortunately, this plan stumbles when addressing the needs of those with pre-existing conditions.
Underwritten by Chubb, DBS TravellerShield Plus makes good use of synergies in the insurer’s well-established network of insurance products. The result is an attractive combination of high coverage, wide range of benefits, and competitive premiums.
This is an alluring package for sure, but does it mean DBS TravellerShield Plus is the ideal travel insurance plan? In many instances, yes, but not if you happen to have pre-existing conditions.
Let’s take a closer look to find out what this travel plan does well, and where it falls short.

Product summary
Why choose dbs travellershield plus travel insurance, dbs travellershield plus travel insurance – what does this plan exclude, benefits, plans and pricing, dbs travellershield plus travel insurance: what are the conditions of cover for pre-existing conditions, how much does dbs travellershield plus insurance cost, should you choose dbs travellershield plus travel insurance pros and cons, how to claim.
DBS TravellerShield Plus is a well-rounded and comprehensive travel insurance plan that features some of the highest coverage where it matters – especially with public conveyance double indemnity, a benefit not commonly offered.
This policy is also highly flexible, covering COVID-19, cruise-to-nowhere, adventurous activities and golfers’ benefits all in its base plan. Its utility is further boosted with several other useful benefits, including automatic extension of cover, home contents coverage and benefits for rental vehicle additional costs, including excess.
Coverage for pre-existing conditions is also provided, albeit it comes with an extra fee and certain restrictions to be aware of (more on this later).
In any case, DBS TravellerShield Plus ranks among the most fully featured travel plans on the market, making it a shoo-in for anyone who wants a plan that covers more than most.
We’ve highlighted some general exclusions in DBS TravellerShield Plus. Be sure to check the policy wording for the full list of exclusions.
DBS TravellerShield Plus does not cover:
- Self-inflicted injury or suicide
- Complication of pregnancy, childbirth, miscarriage (except accidental miscarriage) or abortion
- Activities while under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Professional sports or competitions with expectation of prizes
- White water rafting Grade 4 and above
- Scuba diving unless PADI certified
- Mountaineering, or trekking above 3,000 metres
- Travelling against the advice of a Physician, or for the purposes of seeking medical attention
- Loss or damages with respect to Cuba (this policy does not cover travel to Cuba)
- War, whether declared or undeclared
Key benefits of DBS TravellerShield Plus
Overseas medical and hospitalisation benefits.
DBS TravellerShield Plus offers among the highest coverage levels for overseas medical expenses, topping out at S$1 million. But what would be likely more useful is the benefits for follow-up medical treatment in Singapore, which will help you preserve your Medisave funds for later use.
Another plus point is the hospital confinement benefits, providing an additional buffer for you and your family to cope with extra expenses. While overseas, you will be entitled to cash benefits of S$200/day, and double that for ICU stays. When hospitalised in SIngapore, or due to COVID-19, you will receive S$100/day instead.
Emergency evacuation and personal accident benefits
Another area where DBS TravellerShield Plus shines is the personal accident benefits. In case of death or permanent disablement, you will receive a lump-sum payout of S$150,00, S$300,000 or S$500,000, depending on the plan tier you choose.
Should the accident happen on public conveyance, these payouts are doubled, which means a payout of up to S$1 million is possible.
When emergency medical evacuation is required, you are protected with up to S$ 1 million in benefits (all tiers); this puts the widest range of options at your fingertips. For repatriation back home, the limit is up to S$50,000 per insured person, while for mortal remains, up to S$100,000 coverage is provided (Premier and Platinum).
However, if emergency evacuation and repatriation is required due to COVID-19, the coverage limits are lowered to S$50,000, S$100,000 or S$200,000, depending on plan tier.

Travel inconvenience
DBS TravellerShield Plus continues the theme of higher-than-average coverage for travel cancellations and curtailment, and also for damage or loss of luggage and personal items.
Should your trip be cancelled or cut short, you can receive up to S$5,000, S$10,000 or S$15,000 in benefits. These are reduced by half in the event of COVID-19, though.
As for loss or damage to luggage and belonging, you are protected for up to S$3,000, S$5,000 or S$8,000. There is also a separate benefit for travel documents, which leaves more coverage of the rest of your travel stuff.
- 4 miles per S$1 spend on your premium. Valid till 2 May 2024 8:59 am. Travel Miles Campaign and Additional 2 Miles Travel Giveaway T&Cs apply.
- Complimentary lounge access during flight delays. Valid till 1 July 2024 8:59 am. T&Cs apply.

While it is a good thing that DBS TravellerShield Plus offers coverage for pre-existing conditions, what’s rather disconcerting is the severe restrictions applied.
The maximum coverage in total across overseas medical expenses, emergency evacuation and repatriation is limited to S$100,000, S$125,000 or S$150,000, according to the tier you choose.
This is made all the more disappointing considering you have to pay an additional sum for pre-existing condition cover.
Also, the add-on for pre-existing conditions can only be applied to single-trip plans, with each trip not lasting more than 30 days. For fairness,iIt should be noted that this condition is rather common among insurers.
Still, given the large difference between the regular benefits and those for under pre-existing conditions, travellers with health conditions may want to weigh their options carefully instead of rushing in.
We’ve gotten some quotes for 7-day trips to various destinations for a quick gauge of how much DBS TravellerShield Plus costs. The premiums for base coverage are quite competitive, but the add-on for pre-existing conditions are quite costly.
In summary, here’s how much you can expect to pay for DBS TravellerShield Plus.
- For a 7-day trip in Southeast Asia, the premiums range from S$30.00 to S$48.80, and a further S$47,60 to S$89.03 for the pre-ex add-on.
- For a 7-day trip in the Asia-Pacific region, the premiums range from S$40.00 to S$60.80. The pre-ex add-on will cost between S$59.37 to S$108.52 extra.
- For a 7-day trip in Europe, premiums cost between S$60.80 to S$86.00. Pre-ex coverage is available at an additional S$93.51 to S$156.48.
If high coverage matters to you, DBS TravellerShield Plus would make a great choice on account of its competitive premiums.
Another advantage is how flexible this plan is, with a wide-ranging scope of coverage including cruise-to-nowhere, adventurous activities and rental car excess and benefits, making this a plan that fits into almost any type of travel itinerary.
One sticking point, though, is the high cost of pre-existing conditions cover, as well as low coverage levels offered, compared to the plan’s regular benefits.
But besides that, there’s plenty to like here, and travellers shouldn’t overlook DBS TravellerShield Plus when choosing a travel insurance plan.

- DBS Travel Insurance: Is It a Good Deal?
- Above average baggage delay benefits
- Covers skydiving, hiding, bungee jumping and water/winter sports
- Classic & Premier plans are competitively priced for ASEAN annual plans
- Lack of cover for golf equipment
- Platinum plan is pricey compared to its peers
DBS's three travel insurance plans, the Classic, Premier and Platinum plans, can be summed up as offering medium, standard coverage in most areas at prices close to the industry average, with a particular emphasis on cover for baggage delays. Thus, if you want to make sure you have great coverage for your belongings, DBS may be a great fit. However, those who are looking for high value annual plans or budget-friendly options may find better options with other insurers.

DBS Travel Insurance: What You Need to Know
Sports coverage, claims information.
- Summary of Coverage
DBS's travel insurance plans share in common a tendency to offer average coverage in most areas at prices close to the industry average, standing out only for their high coverage for baggage delay. Because the DBS plans fail to excel whether you're seeking affordability, high coverage, or great value for your money, there is a high likelihood that you will be served equally well or better by a different insurer no matter if you're a budget traveller or luxury traveller.
However, if you are someone who likes to be active during your travels and participate in all sorts of sports activities, DBS may end up being a great fit. All DBS travel insurance plans will cover you if you engage in technically riskier activities, such as water sports, winter sports, skydiving, bungee jumping, hiking and hot air balloon rides. Another main strength of DBS's travel insurance plans is their very good coverage for baggage delays compared to other plans. If this is an issue that is important to you, DBS may be a good option. However, due to DBS's prices, we would recommend budget and mid-tier shoppers to also consider Allianz Global Assistance's Bronze/Silver plans or Citibank's Classic/Deluxe plans. This is because in terms of cost, DBS plans tend to range between being mid-priced and being on the more expensive side compared to the competition.
DBS may not be a good choice for those who are looking for budget plans. Since their prices are around the average across all types of plans, you can find much cheaper plans regardless of what kind of plan you are looking to buy. Additionally, though DBS has well-rounded coverage, some of the cheaper alternatives may offer either higher medical or trip inconvenience coverage (like FWD ).
Notable Exclusions
DBS has a standard exclusion policy which includes pre-existing conditions, participation in competitive sports, declared or undeclared war or riots and travelling against the advice of either your doctor or the Singapore Government.
DBS offers golf equipment coverage and full sports activities coverage for its Premier and Platinum plans. You will be covered for bungee jumping, skydiving, paragliding, helicopter rides, hot air ballooning, jet skiing, mountaineering (below 3,000 metres), skiing/snowboarding, canoeing/white water rafting and underwater activities such as scuba diving (with an instructor).
To ensure quick claims processing, you have to submit your you claims within one month of returning to Singapore. For policies purchased 1 January 2018 onwards, you will be submitting claims through Chubb. You have one session to complete your claim. If you do not have enough materials or enough time, you can request a PDF form. You should make sure you have all the required documentation for faster and accurate processing.
Summary of DBS Travel Insurance Coverage
Though looking for a travel insurance plan that gives you good value for your money while addressing your most pressing concerns may be the last thing you want to do when planning your next vacation or business trip, taking the time to do your research can really pay off. It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!
Ostankino Television Tower
- Television and radio tower in Moscow
- Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
- Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!
For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!
It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!
The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!
Izmaylovo District
- The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
- Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
- Most popular during the summer and on weekends
Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.
The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!
Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!
You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!
Museum of Soviet Arcade Games
- Closed on Mondays
- Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
- The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop
For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.
The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!
Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!
The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.
Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!
If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.
The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.
However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Moscow International Business Center (Moscow City)
- Guide to Russia
What can you do at Moscow City?
- Dine in style: Moscow City is home to 100+ cafes and restaurants, including Europe’s highest restaurant and ice-cream shop
- See Moscow like never before: Ascend to one of Moscow City’s observation decks for an unparalleled panorama of Moscow

Moscow City is a multifunctional complex in the west of Moscow, which has come to represent the booming business of Russia’s capital. Its skyscrapers enrich Moscow’s skyline, contrasting the medieval cupolas and Stalinist high-rises. Visitors to Moscow City can enjoy entertainment high in the sky, as the complex is home not just to offices, but to restaurants, cinemas, viewing platforms, and museums.

History of Moscow City
Moscow City was first conceived in 1991 by honoured Soviet architect Boris Tkhor, who proposed to construct a business center in Moscow. It would be complete with gleaming skyscrapers rivalling those of New York and London, to reflect the new life and growing ambitions of post-Soviet Russia.
The chosen site was a stone quarry and disused industrial zone in western Moscow, in between the Third Ring Road and Moskva River. Initially, the territory was divided into 20 sections arranged in a horseshoe shape around a central zone. The skyscrapers would increase in height as they spiralled around the central section, with shorter structures built on the waterfront to give the taller buildings behind a view of the river.
Architect Gennady Sirota, who contributed to iconic projects such as the Olympic Sports Complex on Prospekt Mira, was selected as the chief architect, and many other world-famous architects were attracted to Moscow to realise their visions in Moscow City.
What can you see and do at Moscow City?
Where Moscow’s cityscape was once dominated by Stalin’s Seven Sisters skyscrapers , this is no more. Moscow City is home to eight of Russia’s ten tallest buildings, six of which exceed 300 metres in height. More buildings are still under construction there today, including the One Tower (which will be Europe’s second-tallest building). Once completed, Moscow City will comprise more than 20 innovative structures.
Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers was designed by its own architect, lending the cluster of skyscrapers a unique appearance. Aside from being a site of architectural wonder, Moscow City is a place for leisure and entertainment with over 100 cafes and restaurants, exhibition spaces, cinemas, viewing platforms, and more.

- East Tower: 374m, 97 floors; West Tower: 243m, 63 floors
- Completed in 2017
- Architects: Sergey Tchoban and Peter Schweger
The East Federation Tower is the tallest building in Moscow, and the second-tallest building in Europe after the Lakhta Centre in St Petersburg. Visitors can enjoy a luxurious meal of seafood, truffles or steak at restaurant ‘Sixty’ on the 62nd floor of the West Tower, or visit Europe’s highest observation deck, ‘Panorama 360’, on the 89th floor of the East Tower.
Did you know? The ice cream and chocolate shop on the 360 observation deck are the highest in the world!
- South Tower: 354m, 85 floors; North Tower: 254m, 49 floors
- Completed in 2015
- Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP
The South OKO Tower is the third-tallest building in Russia and Europe. Here, you can visit ‘Ruski’ to dine on hearty Russian cuisine cooked on a real Russian stove, and have a drink in the ice bar. Alternatively, visit restaurant, nightclub and performance space ‘Birds’; the restaurant is the highest in Europe, situated on the 86th floor roof terrace alongside an observation deck. The OKO Towers are also home to karaoke club ‘City Voice’.
Did you know? Underneath OKO Towers is the largest underground parking in Europe, with 16 levels and 3,400 parking spaces.
Mercury Tower
- 339m tall, 75 floors
- Architects : Mikhail Posokhin, Frank Williams, Gennady Sirota
Another multifunctional skyscraper, which was designed as the first truly ‘green’ building in Moscow. The Mercury Tower has a distinct geometric shape and copper-coloured glazing, and was the tallest building in Europe upon completion. Visit ‘More i myaso’ (Sea and meat) on the first floor of the tower to enjoy European and Mediterranean cuisine whilst surrounded by greenery. On the 2nd and 40th floors a modern art gallery, the ‘ILONA-K artspace’, has just opened.
City of Capitals
- Moscow Tower: 302m, 76 floors; St Petersburg Tower: 257m, 65 floors
- Completed in 2009
- Architect: Bureau NBBJ
The unique geometric design of the City of Capitals towers resembles stacks of rotating blocks, and is rooted in Constructivism of the early Soviet period (many Soviet Constructivist buildings can be found in Moscow). Visitors to the Moscow Tower can enjoy a range of cuisines – traditional Italian dishes on the summer terrace of ‘Tutto Bene’, Panasian cuisine in the tropical luxury of the ‘Bamboo Bar’ on the 1st floor’, and poke or smoothie bowls at ‘Soul in the Bowl’ cafe on the 80th floor.
Tower on the Embankment
- Tower A: 84m; Tower B:127m; Tower C: 268m, 61 floors
- Completed in 2007
- Architects: Vehbi Inan and Olcay Erturk
After completion, the Tower on the Embankment was the tallest building in Europe, and is now the 13th tallest. It houses the headquarters of several large Russian and international companies, including IBM and KPMG. There are two cafes located on the 1st floor of Tower C – self-service café ‘Obed Bufet’ (Lunch Buffet) and Bakery Chain ‘Khleb Nasushchny’ (Daily Bread).
Evolution Tower
- 255m tall, 54 floors
- Architects: Philip Nikandrov and RMJM Scotland Ltd
Evolution is Moscow City’s most recognisable tower, and the 11th tallest building in Russia. Its façade is a true architectural marvel, comprising continuous strips of curved glazing spiralling high into the sky. According to the architect, Philip Nikandrov, the spiral shape of the tower honours centuries of architectural design in Russia, from the onion domes of St Basil's Cathedral to Vladimir Shukhov’s Tatlin Tower, a masterpiece of Constructivist design. Outside the Evolution tower is a landscaped terrace and pedestrian zone descending to the Presnenskaya Embankment, which was also designed by Nikandrov.
Did you know? Moscow’s largest wedding palace was supposed to be built on the site of the Evolution tower, though the project was abandoned.
- 239m tall, 60 floors
- Completed in 2011
Imperia’s interesting design has a curved roof and an arched glass façade. Inside the tower are various cafes including ‘City Friends’ for all-day breakfasts and light lunches, ‘Mama in the City’ for simple meals of Russian cuisine, and ‘abc kitchen’ for European and Indian-inspired dishes. Alternatively, visit ‘High Bar’ on the 56th floor for cocktails with a view. In Imperia you’ll also find the Museum of High-Rise Construction in Moscow (suitably located on the 56th floor), and the Camera Immersive Theatre.
Did you know? Inside Vystavochnaya metro station is the Metro Museum , dedicated to the history of the beautiful Moscow Metro!
- 130m tall, 26 floors
- Completed in 2001
- Architect: Boris Tkhor
Tower 2000 was Moscow City’s first tower. It stands on the opposite bank of the Moskva River, and houses a viewing platform from which visitors can admire an unparalleled panorama of Moscow City. The Bagration Bridge reaches across the river from the tower to Moscow City, and underneath are piers from where you can take boat trips.

Rent a Car in Moscow and other Russian Cities
Driving in Russia is very cheap: the petrol costs only about 60 ¢ per liter (€2 per gallon), the infrastructure is relatively good, and there's almost no road toll charges, so it's a great way to explore the country, especially if you're two or more.
In order to rent a car in Russia you just need your driving license (the plastic card one), a credit card, and your passport — no extra paperwork is needed (you don't even need a translation).
The insurance excess and security deposits are usually limited to about €200, and the daily rent is about €20 for a standard car and €30 for an SUV.
