Looking at how to spend 24 hours in Delhi? Keep reading this guide.

I know that, for some, Delhi can be a nightmare. You see all these pretty pictures in the brochure, which is why you wanted to visit. But, instead, you land off the plane and jump into the manic, crazy, hot, dirty, and loud capital of India!

Well, a warm welcome to you. But, I have some good news, you don’t have to stay long if you don’t want to!

Outside of Delhi, is where your real Indian adventures will begin with places like the Taj Mahal in Agra , Jaipur in Rajasthan , or even Varanasi by the river Ganges but I would encourage you to spend at least a day in Delhi to ‘acclimatise’. Even if it’s just to get used to the smells.

It definitely is possible to do a whistle-stop tour of this diamond in the rough (okay, really rough) and see pretty much everything there is to see as a tourist.

Personally, I love Delhi. When I was living and working here as an ex-pat, it was my go-to place for a weekend of sightseeing.

For me, I need to be culture-shocked when I travel and my thirst for the unusual seems to be getting more, not less as I’m getting older.

I find my eyes can’t stop looking around at the crazy traffic, seeing what the street food vendors are selling, admiring the vibrant colours of the market places and the life that runs through the veins of this awesome city.

It’s kind of like marmite, you either love it or you hate it! Here’s how to spend 24 hours in Delhi.

delhi 24 hours

Getting around Delhi

Delhi is huge and many of its attractions are spread out over the old city.

Personally, I would suggest hiring a taxi or a Tuk-Tuk for a full-day tour. That way, it’s easy to hop in and out of the different attractions.

Plus, if you’ve just landed off the plane, you’ll probably prefer convenience to help with the jet lag.

Alternatively, you can get stuck on the public transport on offer.

I love working out train lines and Delhi’s is quite easy once you master it. The metro is a fast and cheap option that gets you around the city quickly.

But, it’s BUSY and a little hectic. If you’ve ever been on the underground in London, imagine it being rush hour, all day, every day.

It does get extremely crowded and so you have to be a little forceful to get out at the right stop.

Don’t be afraid to shout MA’AF KIJI (excuse me in Hindi) and you’ll get through the crowds okay!

Tickets depending on the length of your journey can cost you anything between 20-50 rupees a single journey.

India gate & rajpath.

First up is the iconic landmark of the India Gate.

Built to commemorate the lost lives of soldiers in the First World War, it has an eternal flame that is always lit underneath.

It’s kind of like the Indian Arc De Triomphe but with people selling chai, chaat, and poppadoms all around it!

Delhi 24 hours

It’s one of my favourite places to visit in the day or evening as it’s free and has a peaceful family vibe. The only downside is all the hawkers who seem to ask to take my photo constantly when I’m blatantly holding a DSLR camera!

It’s always super busy in the afternoon, so if you did want to beat the crowds or take pictures without any people in it you should start off early in the morning.

You can take a turn around the gate and explore the parliament buildings in Rajpath which is a little journey up the long ceremonial axis road.

It’s always been somewhere I would have liked to have a picnic as there is a nice grass area around it, but I haven’t yet had the chance (and the weather is always too hot!). Maybe in the winter, I’ll have more luck.

If you did want to get some tacky souvenir pictures, there are always guys selling them near the gate. You should pay no more than 50 rupees per photo.

A little insider tip, if you only want one photo to take away, don’t let the guy take ten! He’ll expect you to want all of them.

Then that 50 rupees will turn into 500! He’ll print them instantly on his little portable photo machine so you don’t have to come back later in the day.

Delhi 24 hours

The next place to visit is the Red Fort or in Hindi Lal Qila which means “blessed fort”.

You’ll see this little beauty on the 500 rupees notes you’ll have in your wallet.

The fort, which is built with red sandstone, was a prominent Mughal Emporer residence for over 200 years!

Today, it’s a UNESCO world heritage site and has a collection of historical rooms, buildings, and museums to wander around.

My favourite part was the mixture of Persian, European, and Indian architecture and the many Indian archways which were in perfect symmetry.

It’s really nice just to wander around the gardens here too as they have a mixture of temples and buildings lined with colourful flowers!

Watch out for pickpockets as you’re near the notorious Chandni chowk which is the next stop.

Chandni Chowk

Delhi’s oldest market district is truly starting out at the deep end in terms of that all-important culture shock!

I was actually warned not to come here as even some of my |ndian friends said this place was a little rough.

But, to me, that was like saying ‘don’t press that red button’ so I just HAD to go!

The best way to explore this place is to hire a rickshaw for around 250 rupees and get taken around a grand tour of the place.

It’s congested, smelly, exciting, inspiring, and hectic and it won’t be somewhere you forget in a hurry!

Click here for a complete guide to the Old Delhi Spice Market & How to find the famous rooftop.

Delhi 24 hours

Make sure you explore the oldest and largest spice market in Asia while you’re here.

I couldn’t stop sneezing when I first visited as the air is saturated with spice, but the views are totally worth it walking up the dodgy dark stairs.

In fact, the first time I ever went here I almost refused to go up as I thought he was taking us somewhere weird as a scam or something. Just, trust.

Be warned that a lot of the rickshaw drivers work on a commission basis with a lot of the ‘government tourist’ shops in the marketplace.

There are no government shops, it’s a lie to get you to buy stuff at stupid prices.

Basically, the more you buy, the more they get in terms of payment. So, they may keep taking you around until you buy something.

Be assured, it is NOT mandatory for you to buy anything. Just be forceful and say you’re not interested. I

f you did have more time, an awesome way to explore this city is to do the Delhi by cycle tours.

You start out early to beat the heat and you get a little history and culture lesson too. You get water, chai, and breakfast at Karim’s included! For tours and booking see their official website.

delhi 24 hours

Lunch at Karim’s

My cycle tour was actually how I discovered Karim’s and I’ve been going back ever since.

Featured on the BBC and Lonely Planet, Karim’s is voted one of the best restaurants in all of Asia.

I’m not kidding when I say that people visit from all over the country to get a taste.

Make sure you try their Mutton Korma with their fabulous Roti. Roti is my absolute favourite!

It’s like naan bread, but it’s puffy and it’s the size of your head! It’s also super cheap and has a good hygiene rating – even if the streets around it look foul.

delhi 24 hours

Jama Masjid

After lunch, head into the biggest mosque in all of India. It’s absolutely humungous!

Although this is a place of worship, they seem to run a little bit of industry on tourists and the rules seem to change each time I go.

You should be able to just place your shoes for free outside and go in but they charge weird fees for tourists. They charge for the phone, camera, and shoe sitting.

Even though my phone and camera were not on the show, they still tried to charge me 300 rupees for entry!

It’s a little bit of a con but I guess this is India. Women will also have to cover up completely to go inside.

Don’t worry, if you don’t have appropriate clothing the guys here will give you a floral smock that makes you look like a grandma!

I just picked one that was the least garish. You’ll be walking in bare feet so beware of the floor, it gets HOT.

There should be mats to help with the heat but sometimes they aren’t always there.

You should also be aware you may not be able to enter the mosque during prayer time.

Delhi 24 hours

Lotus Temple

It’s a Baha’i place of worship and is open to everyone from all religions and backgrounds and has 27 marble petals to form the shape of a flower.

The architecture has won multiple awards and has become a major tourist site in Delhi that you cannot miss.

The queuing system can be quite intense with people shouting at you in Hindi and ushering you to the side, which I presume meant ‘keep in line’ or ‘move over’.

You’ll be given a shopping bag to keep your shoes in and you should keep this with you at all times.

When you get inside, just stop, sit down and look up! The ceiling and inside of the lotus flower are incredible.

You have to keep complete silence but you’ll be so wow’ed you may be lost for words anyway.

delhi 24 hours

Shopping in Delhi: Janpath market

Shopping at Janpath is my all-time favourite place for souvenirs.

It’s cheap, friendly, and has everything I need as a tourist to take home. I also don’t have to pay an entrance fee like Dili Haat, so I know it won’t be jumped up prices!

You can find everything here from bags, shawls, Ganesh statues, incense, jewellery, and more.

It’s where I go shopping for all my cheap presents to bring back home if I’m stuck on ideas (sorry family and friends haha).

If you were after finer gifts, there is a ‘cottage industry emporium’ which is located to the right of McDonald’s.

It’s expensive, but it showcases top-quality products which are perfect as home decorative items.

24 hours in Delhi

Finish the day at Connaught Place

If you’re not dead off your feet and want to head in for some kip to fight off the jet lag, I would suggest going to Connaught place in the evening.

The whitewashed buildings which are formed into a perfect circle houses some of the best nightlife in Delhi.

You’ll have bars, restaurants, cafés, and shopping all here to enjoy.

Connaught place is HUGE and it’s even split into sections from A-Z to help with locating where you want to go. Personal favourites of mine are Lord of the Drinks (even just for the name) and Social.

The best tip I can give you for bars is to look up!

Most of the restaurants and bars here are above the shops below, so you need to look above to find them.

Warning: Connaught place is notorious for being a little dodgy so be careful around the outer circles and always have a means of transport available to you if you do come here late at night. Be careful of pickpockets and people trying to show you directions!

Delhi 24 hours

So, that’s your 24 hours in Delhi itinerary

This is the sure-fire way of getting everything you need out of this crazy city in the shortest amount of time.

You should be able to see most things in just one day in Delhi.

If anything on here didn’t take your fancy, there are also the Lodhi gardens if you would like tranquillity, Humayun’s tomb if you wanted a pre-Taj mahal build up and Gurudwara Bangla Sahib to keep you occupied.

Also, I love the Instagram-worthy Agrasen Ki Baoli which is a bit of a hidden gem and supposedly haunted!

Read my complete guide for Agresen Ki Baoli here.

The best tip I can give you is to be aware of scams and to go with the flow; Delhi is Delhi and It will always be Delhi!

That’s what I love most about it, It’s gritty but you won’t forget it in a hurry.

A historically important place in Delhi, the Red Fort was once the main residence of the Mughals for nearly 200 years. Housing many museums in Delhi , the fort has always been a sight to behold and a proof of the best times that the country has ever seen. Many of the artefacts and jewels of the Red Fort are now missing due to years of plundering, however, the forts and the walls are still preserved and stand proudly. In the year 1947, Red Fort was the place where the first Prime Minister of India hoisted the tricolour flag on the Lahore Gate to declare independence, a tradition maintained till date on 15th August of every year.

New Delhi

Rising gracefully from lush gardens and surrounded by a symmetrical charbagh (four-part garden), Humayun's Tomb exudes an air of tranquility and grandeur. The use of red sandstone and white marble in its construction adds a captivating contrast to the monument's façade, making it a visual delight for visitors and photographers alike.Interestingly, Humayun's Tomb served as an architectural inspiration for the world-famous Taj Mahal, which was built later by Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife. The intricate geometric patterns, arched entrances, and delicate lattice work seen in Humayun's Tomb can be traced in the design of the Taj Mahal.Today, the tomb complex houses the graves of several other members of the Mughal dynasty, making it a cherished historical site and a symbol of India's rich cultural heritage. Visitors can explore the beautifully landscaped gardens, marvel at the detailed calligraphy adorning the walls, and immerse themselves in the captivating history that surrounds this majestic monument.

Rashtrapati Bhavan

Home to the President of the world’s largest democracy, Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi stands as a symbol of national strength. The nation’s most important democratic functions like the swearing-in ceremony of its elected leaders are carried out in these very grounds. The Rashtrapati Bhavan has been witness to honour giving ceremonies of the country’s bravehearts and achievers, signing of historic pacts between India and other nations, of India’s independence and republic day ceremonies, and the hosting of many world leaders. The Rashtrapati Bhavan is a true architectural masterpiece in its own right. The magnificent building spreads across 320 acres, including the splendid ‘Mughal Garden’ and the Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum. The design of the Rashtrapati Bhavan mainly imparts the Mughal architectural styles blended with classical and grand European signatures, credited to the British architects- Edwin Lutyen and Hebert Baker. The building is also diversified with a number of other typically Indian motifs such as ornate Elephant statues on the outer wall or the main gate of the building with the ‘Jaipur column’. All in all, it is quite a visual treat to behold! The building is open to visitors by three different segments or tour circuits. The first circuit comprises of the Main building and the Central Lawn. The second circuit houses the Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum Complex. In the same circuit, you can get a tour of the Clock Tower, the Stables, and the Garages. The third circuit has the magnificent Mughal Garden and other ancillary gardens of the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Tourists can request a trip of each of the circuits separately on the days assigned for each segment respectively for daytime visits from 9 AM to 4 PM. There is much to take in and marvel at around the complex-- the intricate craftsmanship of carved marble statues, the sprawling Mughal Gardens featuring masterful landscaping concepts, the Clock Tower, and a myriad of presidential mementos preserved inside the Museum. Upon exit, you can explore the premier surroundings of this important historical site, often called as the ‘Lutyens Delhi’.

1 Day in Delhi Itinerary: The City’s Highlights (2024)

1 day in Delhi itinerary

Delhi, India’s crazy capital is the place where most travellers will start their journey in the country. This city is home to some of the most famous landmarks in India , and it’s definitely worth spending a day or two. This itinerary for 1 day in Delhi is perfect for first-timers who want to see the city’s highlights before heading to the Taj Mahal, Rajasthan or somewhere else.

This one-day Delhi itinerary will take you to some of the city’s most spectacular landmarks like Humayun’s Tomb, the famous Red Fort and the beautiful Lotus Temple. It will give you a taste of what Delhi is all about even if you’re short on time.

Travel itinerary for one day in Delhi

Note that this itinerary is quite packed. It’s perfectly doable and will allow you to see the best of Delhi in 1 day, but if you like to take things a little slower, I would recommend keeping your least favourite place for your next visit.

India is part of the famous Golden Triangle tourist route which also includes Agra (home to the Taj Mahal) and Jaipur . Check out my Golden Triangle itinerary if you’re visiting Delhi as a part of this route.

8:45 am: Jama Masjid

Landmarks of India: Jama Masjid

Let’s kick off this Delhi itinerary by heading to Jama Masjid. This mosque was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1650 and 1656 and it’s one of India’s largest and most famous ones. It’s here that the Muslim population of Delhi gathers for the Friday communal prayer every week.

It’s good to know that you will have to dress conservatively to enter this mosque. Your shoulders and legs should be covered. I’d recommend bringing a scarf to cover up too because there have been reports of women being forced to pay for a robe. They tried to make me pay for one too, but they let me in when I showed them I brought a scarf with me.

Tip : Bring socks if you’re visiting the mosque on a hot day. You will have to take off your shoes and when I visited this mosque in July, I was running/jumping all around the place because my feet were burning on the ground.

9:30 am: Red Fort

Ref Fort in Delhi

Next, head to Delhi’s famous Red Fort, which is a 15-minute walk from the Jama Masjid. If you don’t want to walk, it’s good to know that you can easily find a rickshaw that can take you there.

The Red Fort once served as the residence of the Mughal Emperors. It was built in the 17th century and it’s famous for its huge fortification walls made of red sandstone.

You will find beautiful gardens here, as well as the Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience) and the Diwan-i-Amn (Hall of Audience), two impressive halls that will give you an idea of what the fort looked like in the olden days.

There is also a bazaar full of souvenirs inside the fort, as well as a museum containing paintings and artefacts dating from the Mughal era.

Note that the Red Fort only opens its doors at 9:30 a.m. , which is why it’s second on this list.

12:00 am: Lunch at Chandni Chowk

Chandni Chowk is located behind the Jama Masjid, and it’s one of Delhi’s oldest and busiest markets. This is a great place to look around and absorb the atmosphere. You will find plenty of shops selling saris, spices, silverware and more here. So, you may find some nice Indian souvenirs while you’re there.

This market is also a nice place to try some delicious Indian food. There are many places to eat at Chandni Chowk and you will love this place if you enjoy tasting new food!

1:00 pm: India Gate

India Gate in Delhi

After lunch, it’s time to take the metro or a rickshaw to India Gate, which is located 5,5 km (3.8 mi) from Chandni Chowk.

Formerly known as the All India War Memorial , this is another one of Delhi’s most famous landmarks. The India Gate is a war memorial dedicated to the 84,000 soldiers of the British Indian Army who died during WWI. The gate was inaugurated in 1931 and its architecture is often compared to the Gateway of India in Mumbai and the Arch de Triomphe in Paris.

Under the archway, you will find another, smaller memorial called  Amar Jawan Jyoti  (Flame of the Immortal Soldier). This structure was built in the 1970s to commemorate the Bangladesh Liberation War.

You will also find a canopy about 150 m (490 ft) behind the gate. There used to be a statue of King Emperor George V in it, but it was removed in the 1960s when the government decided to remove all British statues from Delhi. Since 2022, however, a statue of Indian nationalist Subhas Chandra Bose can be found in the canopy.

2:00 pm: Humayun’s Tomb

places to visit in delhi 1 day

Humayun’s Tomb is 6,6 km (4.1 mi) from the India Gate, and the easiest way to get there is by taking a rickshaw. The nearest metro station to Humayun’s Tomb is Jangpura Metro Station, but it’s still a 3 km (1.1 mi) walk from this tomb.

Built in 1570, Humayun’s Tomb was the first garden tomb in the Indian subcontinent and it inspired the construction of the famous Taj Mahal . This enormous mausoleum was built in Persian style and, at the time, it was grander than any tomb that was ever built in the Islamic world.

Don’t forget to visit the other beautiful garden tombs while you’re there. These include the tombs of Nila Gumbad ,  Isa Khan , Bu Halima and Afsarwala . Another monument to see at the Humayun’s Tomb complex is the Arab Serai . This is where the people who built the tomb stayed.

Humayun’s Tomb is one of my favourite places in Delhi and one that cannot be missed during a visit to this city!

4:00 pm: Lotus Temple

Lotus Temple in Delhi

This is another one of my favourite places in the city and one that cannot be missed on any Delhi itinerary!

The Lotus Temple can easily be reached either by rickshaw or by metro. It’s just a 10-minute walk from the Kalkaji Metro Station.

This temple was built in 1986 and it’s also called the Bahá’í House of Worship . The Baha’i faith teaches the essential worth of all religions and the unity of all people. There are 7 major Baha’i temples in the world . The other ones are located in the United States, Australia, Uganda, Germany, Panama and Samoa.

It’s interesting to note that this architectural marvel has won numerous architectural awards. It consists of 27 marble petals that are arranged in groups of three. Inside the Lotus Temple, you will find a large meditation room where visitors of all religions are welcome.

6:00 pm: Dinner at Connaught Place

Next, take the metro to Connaught Place, one of Delhi’s largest commercial, financial and business centres. This place is famous for its Georgian-style architecture with white buildings that house plenty of shops.

You will find many great restaurants at Connaught Place too, so this is the perfect place to stroll around and have dinner after a busy day exploring the city.

Things to see in Delhi if you have more time

Qutub Minar in Delhi

There are many, many more things to do in Delhi if you have more time! From temples to gardens, here are some of the other best places to visit:

  • Qutub Minar : The Qutub Minar is a minaret believed to be the first building that marked the arrival of Muslim rulers in India. It was built in 1192 by Qutab-ud-din Aibak after the defeat of Delhi’s last Hindu kingdom.
  • Akshardham : This beautiful Hindu temple opened its doors in 2005 and it houses over a whopping 20,000 figurines from Indian mythology!
  • National Gandhi Museum : Delhi’s Gandhi Museum is the perfect place to learn more about the late Mahatma Gandhi, India’s most famous freedom fighter. It houses many books, documents, photographs and other artefacts about his life.
  • Lodhi Gardens: If you’re looking for lush greenery in the middle of the Indian capital, then Lodhi Gardens is the place for you. It’s the perfect place to head to if you’re looking to escape from the chaos of the city for a while.
  • Gurudwara Bangla Sahib : Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is one of Delhi’s most famous Sikh temples and it’s located close to Connaught Place.

Humayun's Tomb in Delhi

How to get to Delhi

As Delhi is the capital of India, it’s very well-connected. It depends where you’re coming from but you can easily reach it by air , bus and train .

The Indira Gandhi International Airport is about 17 km (10.5 mi) from the centre of the city, and you can take a taxi, bus or metro from here.

Make sure to book your bus or train tickets in advance if you’re coming to Delhi from another place in India. The only website I could find where you can do this that accepts international credit cards is 12GoAsia .

How to get around in Delhi

Delhi is a huge city and most tourist attractions are located pretty far away from each other. So, the best ways to get around are the following:

  • Metro : Delhi has a great metro system (with AC) that connects most parts of the city. This is a cheap and efficient way of getting around as there tends to be lots of traffic in the streets. Click on the link to download the Delhi metro plan .
  • Rickshaw : There are many rickshaws in Delhi but you have to be willing to negotiate hard if you want to get a fair price as a foreigner. Beware of rickshaw drivers trying to get you into shops or tourist agencies too, they will get a commission if you buy something.
  • Ola : Instead of negotiating the price with a rickshaw driver, I love using Ola in India. It works like Uber and will allow you to book a car, rickshaw or bike that will come pick you up for a fair price.
  • Taxi : The taxi is probably the most comfortable way to get around but it’s also the most expensive one.

Best time to visit Delhi

The best time to visit Delhi is  from October to March , during Winter. At this time of the year, the weather will be most pleasant. You will find an overview of the seasons below:

  • Winter (October to March): Winter is the best time of the year to visit Delhi. While December and January can be pretty cool (5°C to 25°C / 41°F to 77°F), in February and March, the weather is great in Delhi (20°C to 25°C / 68°F to 77°F).
  • Summer (April to June): Indian summers are scorching hot. Temperatures in Delhi will be between 25°C and 45°C (77°F to 113°F) with May being the hottest month. This is not a good time of the year to visit this city unless you don’t mind boiling-hot weather.
  • Monsoon (July to September): Although the monsoon season is better than the summer, it will still be pretty hot and humid at this time of the year and there will be some rainfall too. You can expect temperatures between 30°C and 35°C (86°F and 95°F) during the monsoon.

I visited Delhi in April and July, and (although it was manageable) it was very, very hot and humid, so I was happy that the metro had AC. My last visit to Delhi was in February and the weather was perfect at this time of the year!

Streets of Paharganj, Delhi

Delhi itinerary F.A.Q.’s

How many days are enough for delhi.

Delhi is a very big city and you would need at least three to four full days to cover its most famous sights. If you’re short on time, however, it is possible to visit some of Delhi’s absolute highlights in just one day.

Is Delhi a safe city?

Just like any city, Delhi is safe as long as you use your common sense. There are, however, many scams, so it’s good to be aware of that. I visited Delhi by myself four times and I’ve never felt unsafe. Check out my posts about safety in Delhi and scams in Delhi to learn more about the topic.

Can Delhi belly be avoided?

There are some things you can do to avoid food poisoning in Delhi . You can avoid eating raw vegetables and fruits that cannot be peeled, for example. It’s also safer to not eat any meat or fish while you’re there. I did eat raw vegetables and all types of fruit in Delhi and I didn’t get sick, but I was travelling in Asia for a few months already when I got here.

Tips for visiting Delhi

  • Be aware of scams: Please don’t let this stop you from interacting with the locals, but it’s important to know that Delhi has MANY scams… It already starts at the airport, unfortunately. Make sure to read about the most common scams in Delhi prior to your trip , it really is better to be prepared.
  • Dress appropriately: Be mindful of the culture and dress modestly. India is conservative, and although it is okay for women to wear Western clothes, this is not the right place for hot pants and spaghetti tops. I’ve written a detailed post about what to wear as a woman in India , check it out to prepare yourself.
  • Use the metro: I’m a big fan of the metro system in Delhi. It’s quick, safe and easy to use and it has AC!
  • Buy a local sim: This will allow you to look things up at any time. You can buy one at the airport and it doesn’t cost much.

One Day in Delhi itinerary – Final Thoughts

After hearing so many horror stories about Delhi, I was expecting to hate this city when I first went there… After all, isn’t this that city that’s so polluted, dirty, overpopulated and full of scams? Let’s face it – Delhi just doesn’t have the best reputation.

However… I did not hate it and I think Delhi is worth visiting !

I was surprised to see how many incredible landmarks this city boasts, even some of my new favourites (the Lotus Temple and Humayun’s Tomb).

Although Delhi might not be a city everyone will love, and it’s true that there are many scams, I hope this itinerary encourages you to give it a chance and discover some of its most spectacular landmarks!

This sounds good but visiting all of these sites in one day will be very exhausting 🙂 People also worry too much about Delhi Belly, but if someone has eaten streetfood in countries like Thailand or Vietnam, it will be pretty much the same ( I think, cuz I had streetfood almost everyday with no issues).

It will definitely be a busy day haha! It’s good if you only have one day and want to see as much as you can. :p

Ahh it’s the same for me! The worst food poisonings I’ve ever had were actually in Myanmar and Dharamshala (India), not in Delhi (and I went there 3 times).

Your One Day in Delhi at a Glance

If you’re in a hurry, here’s a quick summary of your perfect one day in Delhi:

a woman tying threads onto the jali at Nizamuddin Dargah, a place you should go to with one day in Delhi

  • Humayun’s Tomb
  • Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah
  • Lodhi Art District (drive through)
  • Khan Market (lunch)
  • Gandhi Smriti Museum
  • Bikaner House (coffee break)
  • Agrasen ki Baoli
  • Connaught Place (dinner)

This is a very full day and you will be tired after, but you’ll cover a lot of ground. At the end of the day you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing you saw quite a bit of Delhi.

The Perfect One Day in Delhi Itinerary

The thing to keep in mind is that Delhi is huge, and it can take hours to cross the city by car. With limited time in the city, this itinerary will take you to a couple of major sites and then focus on the best attractions nearby.

This is a jam-packed day so wear comfortable shoes, bring bottled water, a hat, sunscreen and head out early. I recommend fairly conservative dress, and women should bring a scarf or dupatta to cover their hair when required.

Start at Humayun’s Tomb (UNESCO)

The writer standing in front of Humayun's Tomb, a must see site with one day in Delhi

You will start your one day in Delhi at a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Delhi has 3 UNESCO sites and you can’t spend a day here and not visit any of them ( Red Fort and Qutab Minar are the other two). Plus it happens to be one of the most magical monuments in the city.

This will be the most expensive entrance fee you pay today. If you buy your tickets online it is INR 550 (more about that later), children under 15 are free.

Humayun was one of India’s most famous Mughal emperors. The Mughals ruled India for over 300 years and are responsible for the Taj Mahal in Agra and Delhi’s most beautiful sites. Humayun’s Tomb is no exception – it is a captivating complex. In fact, there are several gorgeous tombs here, Mughal gardens and the graves of over 150 Mughal royals and their entourage.

Start your day as early as you can. There is no official opening time, but generally Humayun’s Tomb opens around sunrise every morning. I suggest being there for 8:00 am and buying your ticket in advance on the Archeological Survey of India website . Even though there isn’t much of a line-up early in the morning, it’s better to buy your ticket online. Staff aren’t always able to make change, process electronic payments, or be there to open the ticket booth on time.

Humayun first came to power in 1530 at the age of 22. He was very inexperienced, lost the empire and subsequently regained in 15 years later. Humayun spent most of his exile in Persia and brought much of the culture back with him when he returned to India.

The tomb of Ika Khan agains a blue sky

Humayun’s Tomb was the first garden style Mughal tomb built in India. It set the precedent for many grand tombs built after, including the Taj Mahal.

The mausoleum was finished in 1572. It was commissioned by his chief wife, Bega Begum, who personally oversaw the construction and financed it.

Over the years it has seen a lot of history. It was here the last Mughal ruler of India sought refuge from the British during the Mutiny of 1857. During Partition it was used as a migratory camp for Muslims returning to Pakistan.

If you are staying in South or Central Delhi, either take an auto rickshaw to Humayun’s Tomb or an Uber if you’re more than 4 km away. If you’re staying in Gurugram or near the airport, you may want to consider taking the metro to save time and money. The nearest metro station is Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (aka JLN Stadium) on the Violet line. Use exit gates 2 or 3, and take an auto rickshaw from there (fare should not be more than INR 100).

Explore Delhi’s Sufism at Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah

Nizamuddin Dargah in Delhi

This is the most important Sufi site in Delhi. It doesn’t get many tourists and is off the beaten path, but well worth a visit.

From Humayun’s Tomb take an auto rickshaw to Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah, the shrine of Delhi’s most powerful Sufi saint. Don’t be alarmed – the dargah is in the heart of one of Delhi’s urban villages, and you will go through the narrow and congested lanes to get there.

Delhi has many of these urban village that escaped the city’s municipality by-laws following Partition.

When you get close to the dargah, women should cover their heads. Be prepared to remove your shoes before you enter – you can deposit them with one of the shops just outside the dargah entrance. Just leave a small tip (INR 50) when you retrieve your shoes.

There is no need to purchase flowers, coconuts are other offerings for the shrine, unless of course you want to.

This dargah is believed to hold great power and thousands of devotees visit each week. It is the resting place of Khawja Nizamuddin Auliya, a very powerful Sufi saint who lived during the Tughlaq dynasty. In fact, it was built by Emperor Muhammad bin Tughlaq in 1325, who was a devotee of the saint.

This is a Muslim site, but people of all faiths come to pray to the saint. It is believed any wish made from the heart will be granted, regardless of religion.

long view of the green water of the baoli, completely hemmed in by construction on 2 sides and an arched covered walkway at the far end

Women cannot enter the shrine itself, but many pray and tie sacred threads through the jali (stone, lattice screens).

See an 800 Year Old Stepwell

Next to the dargah is the famous stepwell, Hazrat Nizamuddin Baoli. Do not miss this! It was built 800 years ago. If you walk along the side of the baoli you will come to a small covered bazaar in the back.

It is one of the few stepwells in Delhi fed by an underground spring and is considered sacred by many. It was built by the Sufi saint for his family and followers.

There is no fee to visit the dargah, but be prepared to be asked for donations or money by the less fortunate. Feel free to ignore or comply with these requests – there is no obligation.

Take an Auto Rickshaw Through Lodhi Art District

Lodhi Art District mural, one of the best things to do with one day in Delhi

From the village of Nizamuddin, take an auto rickshaw. Tell the driver you want to go to Lodhi Colony to see the art murals and then Khan Market. He will definitely know Lodhi Colony but he may not understand about the art murals. Direct him to drive up and down the lanes so you can see the wonderful murals before heading to Khan Market. Pay him INR 200 for this, which should be plenty.

Lodhi Colony is India’s first open air art district – there are over 50 giant murals with social and ethical themes.

Most of the murals are located within Second and Fifth Avenues (east – west) and Jorbagh Road (north side) and a couple of lanes south of Veer Savarkar Park. Here’s a handy map of all the murals: St+Art India’s location guide .

Lodhi Colony neighborhood was originally built by the British in the 1940s to house their government employees. It is still government housing, and although the location is absolute prime, I’ve heard the apartments themselves are not in good condition. Many Indian government jobs come with housing – all on a very hierarchical status.

From here you are headed to Delhi’s favourite upscale market. This will be a terrific spot for lunch.

Stroll Through Khan Market and Have Lunch

strolling in Khan Market, one of the best markets to see with one day in Delhi

By now you’re probably famished, and this is a great place to fuel up. Khan Market has many terrific restaurant options. It’s also a great market to browse through – there’s an excellent selection of local Indian brands and international name shops.

Khan Market has everything – clothing, books, jewelry, food stuffs, coffee shops, eateries, pubs, shoes and makeup.

This is one of Delhi’s more affluent markets where South Delhiites love to come to shop and socialize. It’s a great market for visitors because it’s calm and organized (by Delhi standards, that is), and free from traffic in the main lanes.

Good spots for lunch are Khan Chacha,  Colocal , Mamagoto, Yum Yum Cha, Cafe Delhi Heights, the Blue Door Cafe, Town Hall, the Big Chill Cafe and Green Mantis.

My favourite Khan Market shops:

  • Kama Ayurveda (ayurvedic beauty products)
  • Fabindia (Indian clothing and home decor)
  • Faqir-Chand and Bahrisons Booksellers (book shops)
  • Big Chill Creamery (ice cream)
  • Choko la (chocolates and sweets)
  • Anand General Store (food stuffs/groceries)
  • Aquamarine Jewellery

Pay Your Respects to the Father of the Nation at Gandhi Smriti Museum

Gandhi's last steps

No trip to Delhi is complete without a stop at one of the sites devoted to Mahatma Gandhi. And Gandhi Smriti Museum is a very special place – it is the home Gandhi stayed at during the last months of his life and where he died.

Gandhi is still considered the father of the nation. He is greatly revered across the entire country, his image even appears on the currency.

It was in the garden here that he was assassinated on January 30, 1948 (still a national holiday in India). I was there last spring with a group, and many reported feeling his presence while walking through the home and gardens.

When Gandhi stayed there, the home was owned by the powerful Birla family. Gandhi was staying there as their guest (ironically because it was felt this was safer for him). Immediately after his death, the rooms Gandhi stayed in were carefully preserved, even his famous spectacles were saved. The Birla family eventually sold the home to the government so that it could be turned into a memorial and museum.

You can view the rooms Gandhi stayed in and literally walk in Gandhi’s last footsteps to Martyr’s Column, the actual spot where he died.

Getting to Gandhi Smriti Museum is very easy from Khan Market. Just grab one of the auto rickshaws at the market, but make sure you specify Gandhi Smriti Museum on Tees January Marg. There is a Gandhi Smriti near Old Delhi (much further away) and an unscrupulous rickshaw driver could try to take you there and charge you much more. The ride to Gandhi Smriti Museum should be no more than INR 100.

Please note this site is closed on Mondays. Entrance is free. Many of Delhi’s museums and markets are closed Mondays.

Experience Indian Culture at Bikaner House

Bikaner House in Delhi, one of the best free things to do in Dehi

This is your chance to walk through and explore a real palace, for free. Bikaner House is the former palace of the Maharaja of Bikaner. In 2015 it was turned into an art and cultural centre to promote Indian talent. It is truly one of the hidden gems of Delhi.

This is one of those places that local art lovers and the expat community know about, but tourists almost never come here, unless they heard about it from me!

There are always several Indian art exhibits on at Bikaner House, and you can stroll through the lovely building and gardens. It’s a rare quiet oasis in the heart of New Delhi.

L'opera is one of the best bakeries in Delhi

Take this moment to have a break at either L’Opera – a lovely cafe with exquisite Parisian style pastry, or the more casual Haldiram’s for lassi and one of the famous Indian snacks called chaats. Both are on the grounds of Bikaner House.

From Bikaner House, walk over to India Gate. It’s just across India Gate Circle, about a 5 minute walk. This will entail walking across the sometimes busy road. I suggest waiting for a break in the traffic, or look for locals crossing and just tag along beside them. I still employ this technique from time to time on really busy streets.

Walk over to India Gate and See India’s Parliament Buildings

India Gate in Delhi, one of the best free places to visit in Delhi

A trip to Delhi is not complete without visiting India Gate. One of the most iconic symbols of Delhi, this war monument is one of the most popular meeting and hang out spots for locals.

It is always buzzing with activity and a wonderful place to observe Indian family culture!

This is a great spot to try street food. India Gate has some excellent bhel puri stands. You didn’t think I was going to give you a Delhi itinerary without squeezing in the most authentic of all Delhi experiences, eating street food?

Street food is part of the culture of the city – and trust me, it is delicious! Just look for a stand that has got a steady stream of customers – locals always know where the best food is. If you have hand sanitizer, a dab before eating wouldn’t hurt.

Bhel puri stand at India Gate, something you should try if you have one day in Delhi

At the opposite end of Kartavya Path is Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official residence of the President and India’s parliament buildings.

If you want to, and can, take an auto rickshaw down Kartayva Path to get a closer look at Rashtrapti Bhavan. There is a lot of construction in the area for Prime Minister Modi’s Central Vista project (new parliament buildings), and the road may not be fully open.

From India Gate take an auto rickshaw to Agrasen ki Baoli on Hailey Lane. This should cost no more than INR 80.

Step Back in Time at Agrasen Ki Baoli

places to visit in delhi 1 day

At one time Delhi had one hundred stepwells. Now there are less than ten and this is one of the most beautiful. The current stepwell was built in the 14th century, but there was even older stepwell on this site that dated back to 3000 BC.

Agrasen ki Baoli has become popular, largely due to being featured in Bollywood films like the Aamir Khan classic PK. There’s always people here now, but when I first discovered it years ago hardly anyone would visit.

If you venture down the 108 stairs, don’t stare at the pool of black water at the bottom. It is rumoured to have mystical, but malevolent powers (Indian culture can be very superstitious).

While you’re there, take a look at the mosque in the corner at the top of the stairs. Almost nothing is known about the mosque except that it is likely several hundred years old.

The baoli closes at 5:00 pm, so make sure you get there at least 15 minutes before. There is no entrance fee.

Have Dinner in the Unofficial Centre of Delhi , Connaught Place

Connaught Place inner circle, go here for dinner with one day in Delhi

This is the last stop on your perfect one day in Delhi. You can actually walk here from Agrasen ki Baoli (it’s about 15 minutes), but I’m guessing you’re going to be pretty tired by now and an auto rickshaw will be the best bet.

Tell the driver to drop you off at Wenger’s – a well known bakery in the centre. Connaught Place is big (3 concentric traffic circles), and you want to end up in the inner circle.

Connaught Place is the unofficial centre of Delhi and the perfect place to have dinner. It’s a favourite hang-out and meeting spot for Delhiites and always full of activity. CP (as it’s referred to locally) was built by the British in 1933 as the commercial hub of New Delhi. It’s known for its colonnaded Georgian style buildings which now house international brand shops, restaurants, cinemas, art galleries and cafes.

places to visit in delhi 1 day

Good spots for dinner and my favourite Indian restaurants in CP are:

  • Pind Balluchi
  • Saravana Bhavan

You already had a chance to do some shopping in Khan Market, but if there was anything you missed, this is the place to get it. CP has everything, including a reliable money exchange at Tradex Financial Services (Block L-4), next to Haldiram’s.

If you are looking for authentic Indian print textiles for gifts or souvenirs, there are two great stores in CP: the Shop (in the Regal Building) and Soma (Block K-44).

Unfortunately this area has a lot of touts. Don’t be surprised if Indian men try to engage you in conversation. The best approach is to completely ignore them. This may seem rude (I’m Canadian so this is very counter intuitive for me), but it is essential!

If it’s not too late after dinner, you can walk around the inner circle of CP – it is safe there. Don’t go down any dark alleys and stick to the main circle where most of the people are. By this time it will be dark, so take an Uber or Ola back to your hotel. I don’t recommend taking auto rickshaws at night.

If you’re traveling with children, see my one day in Delhi itinerary for kids .

Getting Around During Your One Day in Delhi

Delhi has lots of transportation options. Traffic can be terrible, so for short distances I suggest walking or taking auto rickshaws, which can be found everywhere.

a tuk tuk in Connaught Place, one of the best ways to get around with one day in Delhi

For longer distances, I highly recommend using the Delhi metro. It’s an amazing system and one of the best in the world. Not only is it modern, efficient and clean, it goes everywhere! It is very user friendly, but if you want a step by step guide, read how to use the Delhi metro .

If you can’t face the Delhi metro, Uber is widely used in Delhi. Ola and BluSmart are two more ride-share apps popular in the city. All are reliable. You can rent any one of these for hours at a time and make multiple stops. The cost is reasonable, and it’s like having a private car and driver for the day.

Of course you will need a phone with data to utilize these, but it’s relatively easy and cheap to get a local SIM in Delhi .

Avoid public buses and taxis. Buses are not 100% safe (especially for women), and taxis will rip you off.

Tips for Enjoying Your One Day in Delhi

Don’t let simple mistakes cost you time, and stress you out during your one day in Delhi. These tips will help you make the most of your limited time in the city.

1. Start as early as you can

at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, Delhi

You may dread the idea of getting up early when you’re on holiday, but this itinerary is pretty full. The sooner you start, the more time you will have to enjoy the city. Plus, Delhi can get hot. Do as much traipsing around as possible before the temperature really rises.

2. Dress for the weather and culture

Delhi has extremes in weather. In January the daytime temperature can go down to 5C, while in June the temperature regularly hits 45C. Check the weather before you pack.

The sun can be strong in Delhi, use sunscreen, and bring a hat and sunglasses.

India is a conservative country. Leave the short shorts and tank tops at home. Ladies, if you don’t want a lot of attention, dress modestly. Cover your legs, shoulders and cleavage. Keep a dupatta (Indian scarf) with you – an indespensable accessory in India. You’ll need it to cover your hair if you venture into a mosque or gurudwara, and it’s great as a shawl if you get chilly or just want to cover up.

3. Keep small bills

Change larger bills in shops that will take them and your hotel. Make sure you hang onto smaller bills for auto rickshaws, street vendors and buying water. Vendors are notorious for claiming not to have change, even when they do.

4. Keep hydrated

places to visit in delhi 1 day

Drink lots of bottled water. Small bottles are INR 10 and larger bottles are INR 20, unless you buy designer water. Generally speaking, water in many restaurants is fine (not super casual dhaba joints), but you should ask to make sure it’s filtered. If there’s any doubt, drink bottled water.

5. Go with the flow

This is India… I can guarantee not everything will go according to plan. Sites randomly close, operating hours change without notice, roads are suddenly blocked. The only thing you should expect is that something unexpected will happen. But if you relax and just go with it, you’ll have a much better time. Sometimes the best things happen when something else goes awry.

Want to Plan One Day in Delhi the Easy Way?

a street food chaat stand in Old Delhi

This do it yourself one day in Delhi itinerary is all you need to experience some of the best things about Delhi. It will take you to many of my favourite places and tell you how to get there.

But if you would rather not worry about navigating Delhi and just relax (as much as it is possible in a city like this), you can consider taking one of these fantastic tours of Delhi:

  • half day tuk tuk tour of New Delhi
  • half day cycle tour of Old Delhi
  • breakfast, brunch or night food walk depending on your schedule

I highly recommend these tours. They are with ethical and reliable local companies. Looking for something else? Here are six incredible Delhi tours you can take.

Only One Night in Delhi?

If you only have one night in Delhi, these are some great things to do:

The shrine at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in Delhi

  • Listen to the qawwali singing at Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah
  • Visit Delhi’s most important Sikh temple, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib , and have langar (the free, community meal)
  • Shop, eat and drink in the centre of Delhi, Connaught Place
  • Stroll around India Gate , which will be buzzing with activity and lit up until 11:00 pm
  • See a Bollywood movie at one of Delhi’s modern movieplexes
  • Listen to live Sufi music at Molecule Air Bar
  • Enjoy a night cap at one of Delhi’s beautiful lounges

Where to Stay With Only One Day in Delhi

In a city this large and congested, deciding where to stay (especially if you only have one day in Delhi) can be challenging.

I’ve stayed all over the city, and I highly recommend you stay in South Delhi. It’s the more affluent part of the city, where the embassies, government buildings and nicer residential neighbourhoods are located. Everything in this itinerary is in South Delhi so you won’t waste unnecessary time travelling. It’s also very well connected by metro. These are my favourite South Delhi hotels:

Imperial Hotel

places to visit in delhi 1 day

I absolutely love this luxury heritage hotel. It’s my top pick and favourite hotel in the entire city. The location is excellent, right on Janpath Road in Connaught Place.

You can easily walk to many places from here – and that is not something I can say very often about Delhi.

The Imperial exudes Indian charm in a luxurious, but not pretentious way. It is very beautiful and guests are extremely well looked after. It also has one of the best Indian restaurants in the entire country, the Spice Route. I love the Imperial’s high tea buffet in the Atrium and their ornate outdoor pool. Plus the rooms are gorgeous and cozy!

If you’re a solo female traveler, the Imperial has Eliza rooms for women only, which feature special toiletries and extra security features.

Check rates & book your stay at the Imperial Hotel Delhi!

Bloomrooms @ Janpath

This is a fantastic hotel if you want the excellent location of central Connaught Place, but something budget friendly. It’s located in an area with five star luxury hotels and tucked away on a quiet side street. It’s a bright and cheerful hotel, part of the Bloomrooms chain. Great value for the area.

Ambassador, New Delhi

places to visit in delhi 1 day

This is a wonderful older hotel, full of character and in one of Delhi’s most exclusive neighbourhoods next to  Khan Market.

It’s a designated heritage building (built in 1947) and offers cultural activities like heritage walks, feeding Delhi pigeons on the lawns, and high tea. It’s also pet friendly.

While the hotel is not as flash as newer properties, it has lots of charm and is in one of the best residential neighbourhoods of Delhi. You can walk to Khan Market in 3 minutes and Lodhi Garden (Delhi’s most favourite heritage park) in 10 minutes.

Check rates & book your stay at the Ambassador, New Delhi!

This is a great small boutique hotel tucked away in a lovely residential area of South Delhi, next door to Humayun’s Tomb . You can be at the first stop of this one day in Delhi itinerary in less than 10 minutes.

This part of town is very historic, you’ll pass by two other beautiful Mughal era tombs when going to and from Bnineteen, the Sabz Burj and Abdul Rahim Khan-i-Khanan Tomb . Ask for a room with a view of Humayun’s Tomb, it doesn’t get much more magical than that!

Don’t skip out on breakfast – it’s included with the room rate and very good. As much as I love this property, it is very close the Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station. If you are a light sleeper this could be problematic – you can hear trains from the property.

Check rates & book your stay at Bnineteen!

places to visit in delhi 1 day

I love this upscale guest house. It feels like a home, and staff are incredibly helpful. It’s in one of South Delhi’s best neighbourhoods, Nizamuddin West and most rooms have balconies which look out onto trees (make sure you ask for one of these rooms).

The location is excellent for this itinerary and exploring Delhi, it’s very close to Humayun’s Tomb . An excellent breakfast is included in the room rate.

Check rates & book your stay at Zaza Stay!

Prakash Kutir Bed & Breakfast

This is one of Delhi’s most popular B&Bs, and for good reason. It is spotlessly clean (I swear you could eat off the floors), and it’s well located in one of South Delhi’s better neighourhoods, Hauz Khas. It’s within walking distance of Shahpur Jat and several ruins from Siri, Delhi’s second medieval city.

Rooms are very comfortable and the Gupta family will make you feel like an honoured guest. A very filling breakfast is included in the room rate. Reserve your room as far in advance as possible – this place gets booked up.

Check rates & book your stay at Prakash Kutir Bed & Breakfast!

Where to Stay if You Have to be Near the Airport

If you need to stay near the airport but still want to be able to get into Delhi easily, the best place to stay is Aerocity. It’s conveniently located beside the Indira Gandhi International Airport, and you can be at the airport terminal in minutes.

You can walk to the Delhi metro Aerocity station from the hotels and be at your first stop of this one day in Delhi itinerary in less than an hour. It would take much longer in a car, unless you leave very early in the morning. These are my favourite Aerocity hotels:

Andaz Delhi

Twin Beds Deluxe room at Andaz Delhi, one of the best pet friendly hotels in Delhi

This is a bright and modern luxury hotel. They have an excellent gym and top notch restaurants, including a specialty gin bar, Juniper . It’s part of the Hyatt chain so you know it’s going to be good. And it’s pet friendly.

If you want something special to do at night, Delhi’s premiere Sufi lounge and show, Khubani, is located on the grounds of the Andaz.

Check rates & book your stay at Andaz Delhi!

Hotel Pullman New Delhi Aerocity

This is my personal favourite of the Aerocity hotels. It’s sleek and contemporary, but still inviting and comfortable. Plus it’s pet friendly, which is always a big plus for me (and my dog). I love the rooms, which are stylish but still cozy. Staff are excellent and will do everything possible to ensure you have a great stay.

Check rates & book your stay at Hotel Pullman New Delhi Aerocity!

Ibis New Delhi Airport

This is a great choice for a more budget friendly hotel, something there isn’t much of at Aerocity. The beds are super comfortable and rooms have black out curtains, a real plus if you’re trying to get over jet-lag. The Ibis has a gym, outdoor pool and restaurants. It’s another pet friendly hotel.

Delhi Itinerary – How To Spend 1 Day In Delhi

Posted on Last updated: 23 March 2024

Categories India , Itineraries

Building a one day in Delhi itinerary is tough, as there’s so much to see and do. So we’ve narrowed down all the best parts, into how to do Delhi in a day.

Table of Contents

How To Get Around Delhi

Delhi is a large city and you have a few different options to get around it.

With a population of over 32 million people, Delhi is a city full of pedestrians.

And with the population density bursting at the seams, this means traffic, congestion, and crowds.

So there are many times you will get to places faster on foot, than by vehicle. Especially if you haven’t got far to go.

Taxi/Tuk Tuk

Jumping in a rickshaw (tuk tuk) is a great option if your legs are feeling tired.

Quick trips are usually cheap and shouldn’t cost more than 50 rupees, but be sure to negotiate a price before getting in the vehicle.

Regular taxi’s are available and should operate on a metre.

App-based taxi services like Uber and Ola also operate in Delhi.

The Delhi Metro is a fast and reliable mode of transport that connects all areas of the city. Making it a popular choice with locals and tourists.

It provides a great way to explore the city’s iconic landmarks such as the Red Fort and India Gate, which are all easily accessible via the metro.

One Day Metro Card : 150 Rupees.

A perfect example of this is the Private Tour: Old And New Delhi City Sightseeing Tour .

With this option you get an air conditioned vehicle and a driver for the day, and get to see the best of Delhi in a private, customisable 8-hour tour.

Simply tell your driver which sites you’d like to visit, and enjoy complete flexibility as you visit museums, bazaars, and anything else that interests you.

Some of the best days out we’ve had have been on private tours.

For those short on time, or that prefer everything to be organised for them, there are some awesome tours on Get Your Guide available to book in advance.

From food tours, to river rides and walking tours, there’s plenty to keep you busy in this bustling city!

Best Time To Visit Delhi

Delhi lies between the Himalayas and the Thar Desert which means it experiences some quite extreme weather.

The most popular time to visit is during the winter, which starts around mid November through until the end of February.

This is when temperatures are generally at what some people would call a pleasant 24°C during the day and it’s cool at night for sleeping.

Remember, this is just a guide, so you may want to mix it up and add/subtract different attractions.

Delhi Itinerary Day 1

The red fort.

The first stop on your one day in Delhi itinerary, has to be The Red Fort.

One of the most historic forts in India, The Red Fort served as the main residence of the Mughal Emperors for nearly 200 years and now remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country.

Built from 1639 – 1648, (it took a total of 8 years, 10 months and 25 days) this private house was constructed by Shah Jahan for private residence of his daughter.

Now The Red Fort can be visited by tourists and locals from Tuesday to Sunday between 9.30am – 4.30pm. The Fort is closed on Mondays.

Tickets for the Red Fort can be combined with a 3-Hour Old Delhi Heritage Walking Tour With Rickshaw Ride .

Also, every year on the Independence day of India (15 August), the Prime Minister hoists the Indian “tricolour flag” at the main gate of the fort and delivers a nationally broadcast speech from its ramparts.

Walk around, take photos, and dive into the culture of one of the top things to see in Old Delhi in a day.

Depending on your time restraints, a lot of people choose to visit Taj Mahal from Delhi too, but that is a full day trip.

Arriving In India Delhi Spice Market

Chandni Chowk

From The Red Fort it’s just a 5 minute walk to explore the streets of Chandni Chowk!

Chandni Chowk is a busy market area full of spices, dried fruit, silver jewellery and vivid saris. And while the narrow side streets are crowded, they make for one hell of an experience!

From the spice markets to the rooftops this is the rawest places you’ll see on your one day in Delhi itinerary.

A great way to experience both The Red Fort and Chandni Chowk is to combine them with the: 3-Hour Old Delhi Heritage Walking Tour With Rickshaw Ride .

This tour allows you to walk through the streets and bazaars of Old Delhi in a day, and experience traditional Indian lifestyles. Then visit the Jama Masjid mosque, Red Fort and the Chandni Chowk market. Before enjoying a short ride by rickshaw back to the spice market.

Otherwise, if you would like a a more in depth food tour, there’s the: Eat Like a Local: Chandni Chowk Street Food and Walking Tour .

Designed for the foodies, this walking tour is the perfect way to sample the best street food and snacks Delhi has to offer. Allowing you to taste over ten different traditional drinks and dishes, including seasonal specials!

Arriving In India Delhi Streets

Eat Local Street Food

The first thing you’re going to want to do on your India itinerary is try the cuisine!

So we recommend exploring the streets on your one day in Delhi itinerary, and getting stuck into the local snacks.

But what is Delhi Chaat? – Chaat is a savory snack originated in India, typically served at the road-side from stalls or food carts.

With its origins in Uttar Pradesh, chaat has become immensely popular in the rest of the Indian subcontinent.

From the traditional samosas, to the Asian inspired momos, go out and grab some cheap street food!

One of the top ways to do so is on an Old Delhi Street Food Tasting Tour . You’ll experience the culture of India through the vibrant street food scene of Old Delhi, with this tasting tour of local on-the-go snacks.

Plus you get to travel from location to location by rickshaw and experience the city like a local.

We couldn’t get enough of the Indian spices, and we’re sure you’ll love them too on your Delhi in a day tour!

Delhi Spice Market Rooftop Places To Visit In Delhi Things To Do In Delhi

Experience The Nightlife

If you’re one day in Delhi itinerary ends up on a weekend, then we recommend heading out to experience the Delhi nightlife.

We are not party goers at all when we travel, but after speaking to some friends at our accommodation we thought why not give it a go.

It was such a random experience, but we ended up dancing to Punjabi music until the early hours. Don’t ask us where, but it was an evening of laughs and certainly rounded off the madness of exploring Delhi in a day.

Many of Delhi’s best bars are centrally located on the Outer Circle of Connaught Place, so jumping in a rickshaw or taxi is easy enough.

Partying in one of the most populated cities in the world – why not? If you’re in Delhi then this has to be one of the best things to do in India .

Crowded shopping street in Delhi, India

Delhi serves up an astounding cornucopia of history, culture, cuisine, commerce and street life, with countless sights and activities to keep visitors thoroughly engaged.

At first glance, the Indian capital can seem an overwhelming place to negotiate but give it time and you'll feel the chaos subside, revealing delicate vignettes of daily life and layer upon layer of ancient history, built up over 2000 years of settlement.

Here are 20 great things to do in India ’s fast-paced and frantic, but fun-filled capital.

A New Delhi street scene, a man cooking

1. Sample Delhi’s delectable street food

The street food in Delhi is legendary. Tangy delights such as chaat papdi (fried wafers loaded with potatoes, chickpeas, yogurt and chilli) or golgappas (fried hollow dough filled with chickpeas and spicy potatoes), are de rigueur in Old Delhi. Also seek out stuffed parathas (fried breads with vegetable fillings), sizzling kebabs and treacle-dripping jalebis (sweet swirls of fried dough).

2. Admire the grandeur of Humayun's Tomb

Humayun's Tomb combines Persian elegance with fine Indian craftsmanship, and its graceful lines are mirrored by the fiercely symmetrical Mughal Gardens that surround it. For the best photos, stroll here at dusk, or simply admire the architecture at any time of day. Believed to be the precursor of its more famous look-alike, the Taj Mahal , this Unesco-protected monument is well worth the relatively high entry fee.

3. Listen to qawwalis

The best place to hear qawwalis (devotional music) is at the dargah (tomb) of the Sufi saint Nizam-ud-din Auliya ; resounding professions of faith ring out around sunset at one of Sufism’s most revered sites. Buried close to his spiritual master is Amir Khusro, a celebrated Sufi poet from the 13th century. The qawwalis take on a special hue during Basant, the festival of Spring, when both dargah and devotees are adorned with yellow robes and blooms.

Red sandstone arches at Delhi's Red Fort

4. Explore the Red Fort

Explore the great sandstone carcass of the Red Fort , and you'll be whisked back to the last days of the Mughal empire. Though some areas are under restoration, the mixture of graceful Islamic structures and British-era additions still spins a tale of duelling empires. If possible, catch the Republic Day celebrations (January 26) here when the Prime Minister hoists the Tricolor from its resplendent ramparts, and browse the wares on sale in the Meena Bazar, once the exclusive domain of the ladies of the Mughal court.

5. Take the stress out of sight-seeing on a bus tour

You can catch an easy glimpse of Delhi on a Ho-Ho Bus tour for as little as Rs 500 a day. Except for Mondays, tourist buses run throughout the day at regular intervals, stopping at the biggest sights and giving visitors plenty of time to get familiar with the city's history and heritage. Choose from half-day, one-day or two-day tours depending on availability.

6. Go on a shopping spree

Some of the best shopping in the city can be found at Delhi's government emporiums, a string of temples to Indian craftsmanship lined up along Baba Kharak Singh Marg close to Connaught Place . For bargains, hit the flea market stalls nearby on Janpath and in Sarojini Nagar. For a one-stop shop for crafts from around India, look no further than Dilli Haat , near the INA metro stop, which also serves up great street food.

Coloured powder on display at Delhi's Spice Market

7. Lose yourself in Old Delhi

Get lost and confused in the narrow bazaars of Old Delhi, and feel like you've wandered into the medieval period. Every wrong turn springs a new surprise as you stumble upon such hidden delights as the home of the legendary Urdu poet, Mirza Ghalib, the towering Jama Masjid , India's largest mosque or Khari Baoli – Asia’s largest spice bazaar. On your explorations, keep an eye out for a series of well-preserved and colourfully painted Jain havelis (merchant's houses), built in the 18th century.

Explore Old Delhi effortlessly with GetYourGuide.  Book your tour today .

8. Explore the sprawling Sunder Nursery

To restore your inner equilibrium, step into the serenity of the 90-acre Sunder Nursery , a beautifully restored park dotted with Mughal monuments, water features and several hundred species of trees. Alive with birds and butterflies, the flowerbeds surround amphitheatres where you can see performances by talent from nearby Nizamuddin Basti.

9. People watch at Lodi Garden

To see Delhi at its most relaxed, wander around Lodi Garden on a Sunday afternoon, the perfect place for people watching. The gardens are dotted with ancient ruins from the Islamic Sayyid and Lodi dynasties so there's plenty to see; bring a picnic basket, relax with a book, or put its jogging tracks to good use.

Rashtrapati Bhavan, the official home of the President of India

10. Watch the Changing of the Guard

A relatively unknown Delhi attraction, the Changing of the Guard takes place on the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan every Saturday morning. The President’s Bodyguard, kitted out in their ceremonial regalia, put on an equestrian display for a gathering of no more than 200, against the backdrop of the imposing Presidential Palace.

11. Visit Indira Gandhi's former home

The ghosts of history swim through the former home of Indira Gandhi, Indira Gandhi Smriti , where she was shot dead by one of her bodyguards in 1984. There's a lot to learn about India's most powerful dynasty, and India's complex politics, as you wander through this period mansion.

12. Get acquainted with Indian art

Be flabbergasted by the wealth of Indian art at the National Museum , home to an astonishing collection of statues, woodcarvings, paintings and other treasures. Not far away, you can introduce yourself to India's avant-garde artists and their work, installations included, at the National Gallery of Modern Art .

Indian dhal in cooking pan with jasmine rice, coriander and naan on dark background, top view

13. Feast on fine Indian fare

Delhi is amply stocked with great places to eat. For a taste of the south, chow down on scrumptious masala dosas (rice and lentil flour pancakes) at the Janpath branch of Saravana Bhavan , and finish your meal with a deliciously nutty south Indian coffee. Alternatively, take things up a notch by booking a table at Indian Accent in the Lodhi Hotel to sample a tasting menu blending flavors from across the subcontinent, or try the cluster of Mughlai restaurants at Pandara Market ; Pindi and Gulati are standout options.

14. See the city from a different angle

There are dozens of great books that bring Delhi's history to life. Use the map from William Dalrymple's City of Djinns for a novel way to explore the city, or grab Madhulika Liddle’s The Eighth Guest and Other Muzaffar Jang Mysteries and traipse around Shahjahanabad (Old Delhi) in the footsteps of her intrepid Mughal-era detective.

15. Put on your dancing shoes

One great way to feel the rhythms of the subcontinent is through a dance lesson at the Delhi Dance Academy . Their two-hour Namaste India Dance Workshop is an entertaining introduction to the Bollywood, Bhangra, and Garba styles you've probably already seen on the big screen. The cost includes costume hire and a video of the choreographed performance.

Low-angle view of Qutub Minar, Delhi, India

  16. Take time out at the Qutab Minar

For a break from the centre, take a trip out to the historic Qutab Minar , with its towering minaret resembling an ornate factory chimney. This complex is studded with monuments straddling several centuries, and will be of immense interest to any history, architecture or calligraphy buffs. The ruins continue in the neighbouring Mehrauli Archaeological Park .

17. Go upmarket at Khan Market

Sample the refined lifestyle of middle-class Delhiites at laidback Khan Market . Browse the bookshops and homeware stores, then hang out for a chat at Café Turtle , fuelled by coffee and gooey cake. Alternatively, get the youthful vibe by ordering a shake at Big Chill or sushi at Yum Yum Cha , or mix coffee and carafes at Perch , the city’s first wine and coffee bar.

Explore Khan Market effortlessly with GetYourGuide.  Book your tour today .

18. Escape the crush at the Raj Ghat Gandhi Memorial

For respite from the chaos of the city streets, visit Gandhi's simple memorial  in its tranquil gardens at Raj Ghat, and consider the humble lifestyle of the great Independence leader and the tragedy of his departure – nowhere else in Delhi is as peaceful as this.

Colourful artworks in a shop in Hauz Khas

19. Feel the buzz of Hauz Khas

History meets BoHo in the district of Hauz Khas , with its crumbling Deli Sultanate-era tombs and enticing art, antique and fashion boutiques. Enjoy a quick bite or a long, leisurely meal in one of many hip eateries overlooking the lake, or stop in for coffee and conversation at Kunzum Travel Cafe .

20. Climb Jama Masjid's minaret

Wind up your explorations back in Old Delhi at the Jama Masjid, and climb the mosque's minaret in the late afternoon for epic views of stacked rooftops, soaring vultures and twirling kites, then reward yourself with a classic non-veg meal nearby at Karim's or Al-Jawahar , both famous for their rich, meaty kebabs.

The Five Foot Traveler

The Five Foot Traveler

Reaching new heights, one day in delhi: 5 places to visit in india’s capital city.

by Sarah Gallo | Dec 30, 2018 | Asia , India | 0 comments

It’s hard to believe that Delhi has been continuously inhabited since the 6th Century; the remains of eight major cities have been uncovered in Delhi. Over the course of its history, Delhi has served as the capital of various kingdoms and empires…and is still the capital city today. The National Capital Territory of Delhi has an estimated – and insane – 26 million people, which, according to the United Nations, makes it the world’s second-largest urban area.

That said, when preparing to explore Delhi, make sure you are not in a rush. The traffic within Delhi is unreal (again, think of how many people live there) and will certainly slow down your site-seeing. It doesn’t matter how fast you “see the sites” because the reality is that you have to drive large distances between each site either-which-way as Delhi is, simply put, massive.

If you only have one day in Delhi, depart early and visit these five key places to visit in Delhi:

1. Qutab Minar

Standing at 73 meters, the Qutab Minar is both the highest minaret in the world and the tallest brick tower in the world. Until 1980 visitors were allowed to climb the 379 spiral stairs to the top, however, access has since been stopped due to safety concerns… which makes sense considering construction first started in 1192! Beside the minaret, you will find the Quwwatul Islam Mosque, the first ever mosque in India. Combined, these two sites – the Qutab Complex – have been deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site as an exquisite example of pre-Mughal dynasties in Delhi.

2. Humayun’s Tomb

This incredibly ornate mausoleum is home to the tomb of Mughal Emperor Humayun. After his death, his first wife spent nine years preparing for, and seven years constructing, Humayun’s Tomb. It was the first garden-tomb in India and the first building in the country to use red sandstone on such a large scale. While it was originally built in 1565, it underwent extensive restoration after being deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the early ‘90s. This is a “must see” if you only have one day in Delhi!

3. India Gate

The India Gate, once called the All India War Memorial, honors soldiers from the Indian Army who fought and died in World War I. Inscribed on the gate you will find the names of the 13,000 soldiers who were killed, and an eternal flame beneath the arch as a reminder for those who gave their lives for the country. Today, the India Gate is an iconic symbol of Delhi.

4. Red Fort

Until 1847, the Red Fort was the residence, ceremonial, and political center of the Mughal Emperors and their governments. Built in 1648, the Red Fort (which received its name due to having been built in red sandstone) represents the pinnacle of Mughal achievement. Today, the Red Fort is a major historical landmark and comprises many museums. Each year on Independence Day, the Prime Minister goes to the Red Fort to hoist the national flag and deliver a speech.

places to visit in delhi 1 day

5. Raj Gat and Mahatma Gandhi Park

Mahatma Gandhi Park didn’t always have this name. In fact, it was developed pre-Independence and used to be a popular spot for many Europeans, British, and high-profile Indians to picnic. It wasn’t until India received its independence in 1947 when it was renamed to Mahatma Gandhi Park to commemorate India’s respected leader, the Father of the Nation. Within the park itself, you will find Raj Gat, the site of Gandhi's cremation on January 31, 1948, just one day after he was assassinated. There is an eternal flame beside the memorial, representing the soul.

Gandhi’s famous words, “Be the change you wish to see in the world,” are best put to practice through travel. Take the time to educate and expand your cultural horizons, try foods you’d never imagine, and gain a better understanding of humanity as a whole. Opening your eyes to a world you’ve never known is the key to tolerance and acceptance.

Final Thoughts on Delhi

India is a must-see destination on any world traveler's list, and Delhi perfectly encapsulates all of its complexities (even from what I saw just throughout one day in Delhi!). There are plenty of places to visit in Delhi, from the beautiful, ornate, old forts and temples, to the sleek, modern skyscrapers. The traffic is utter chaos (traffic lights, painted lane markers, and one-way signs are merely suggestions, while there is a new, cheap, clean, quiet, efficient subway system. People in the tourist industry are the nicest anywhere in the world, but the people in the subways are pushier and less polite than those in the New York City subways. Sadly, poverty is evident everywhere and little children beg aggressively, but the school kids could not be more adorable; I must have been asked to take hundreds of selfies.  Clearly municipal governments spend virtually nothing on waste removal as garbage is abundant — on streets, gutters, sidewalks (where sidewalks even exist), etc, and one does not go far without encountering the stray cow, dog, or pig, even on the highways. Still, the spirituality of the Hindus, Muslims, and Buddhists is admirable. As I said, India is perhaps the most complex country I have experienced yet still very worth the visit.

Tips & Itinerary for 1 Day Sightseeing in Delhi

places to visit in delhi 1 day

Delhi is not the most popular tourist destination in India. According to some people there are only a few interesting tourist spots in Delhi. They are all relatively close to each other and can therefore easily be done in one day. A city with a population of 25 million there must be nice places to visit. In this guide I will point out the top tourist attractions and give you an itinerary for 1 day in Delhi.

I have been to Delhi a couple times myself and honestly, the first couple times I wasn't interest in sightseeing in Delhi at all actually. But on my last visit although it was Monsoon season I felt like I had to give it a chance. I was staying 3 nights in The LaLit Hotel close Connaught Place and Central Park and as this is where most of the Delhi tourist spots are located, I decided to give it a try.

Sightseeing in Delhi itinerary

All the below places to go in Delhi are pretty near to each other and are perfect to put in a 1-day sightseeing in Delhi tour. Best thing to do is to take a ride to Old Delhi, get a feel of this turbulent district and walk to Jama Masjid and Agra Fort. Take a taxi to the biggest Hindu temple in the world and then towards the India Gate and walk to the Presidential Palace.

  • Jama Masjid
  • Temple of God
  • Presidential Palace

Check out these 10 Delhi Travel Tips , to get the most out of your stay in India's capital. Number 3 is funny, because it says: Delhi is more than just Old Delhi. The places I am recommending you to visit in this blog are all located in and around Old Delhi! ;)

nice places to visit in delhi

Best places to see in New Delhi in 1 day

1. visit old delhi.

This spot will be in every list of top 10 tourist places in Delhi. The old town is where you will find the real Indian city lifestyle with small hectic streets where vendors, motorbikes, people and tricycles are all fighting for their little space. There are tiny little streets where you can easily get lost. Districts are named after the product they sell: silver, book shops, sarees, jewellery and of course spices. Be open-minded and amazed by what you will see here in the streets, it is like nowhere ever before!

sightseeing in delhi

As a man there is no need to be scared, but as a woman I would not recommend walking around here alone. Keep your belongings close to you, even better don’t bring anything with you apart from some money and a camera. For the rest you should be fine, don't believe all those New Delhi travel guides saying that it is dangerous to visit Old Delhi. I have been multiple times and never find this place sketchy.

Old Delhi is more like hectic, chaotic, intimidating, dirty, etc rather than dangerous. Just use common sense when visiting Old Delhi.

The best way to visit Old Delhi is to walk around, but be prepared to get hassled everywhere. Everyone seems to want something from you, sell you their products and you will be asked for a taxi or tricycle a million times and after a while you can't stand the sound of honking motorbikes anymore. My advice: bring earplugs! No joke...

You could also decide to hire a tricycle and let someone drive you around Old Delhi, an hour will cost you around $2 or so, depending on your bargaining skills.

2. Climb the minaret of Jama Masjid Mosque

This majestic mosque is one of the best places to visit in New Delhi and cannot be missed on your sightseeing itinerary. For some reason I drove past the Jama Masjid Mosque in Delhi a bunch of times but never went inside. Holy crap! What was she thinking? To me it is number one best thing to do in New Delhi. When you decide to go sightseeing this can NOT be missed!

The Jama Masjid is also located in the Old Delhi and can easily be reached on foot when visiting Old Delhi. The entrance fee is about 50 cents, but somewhere inside in a corner there is an extra ticket boot where you can buy a ticket for $2 to go to the top of the minaret. Don't forget your camera because this is one of the coolest things to do in New Delhi.

tourist spots in delhi

Ask around to find the entrance to climb to the top of the Masjid. Even if they don't allow it anymore, there is always someone that wants to help a tourist! ;)

3. Visit the Red Fort

The next place to visit in New Delhi is super close to the Jama Masjid. Just a few streets away you can find the Red Fort. You can’t miss it as the walls of the Red Fort are looming large at the horizon and it is one of the most famous tourist spots in Delhi. To enter the Red Fort you have to pay a hefty entrance fee of $10, which in India is very steep!

Visiting the Red Fort was nice, but if you are traveling to more places in India I would recommend you to visit the forts in Rajasthan over the Red Fort. My favorite forts in India are: Jaipur, Agra, Jodhpur.

Click on the link to check out a list of some of the most amazing places to visit in India .

4. Walk from India Gate to Rashtrapati Bhavan

The India gate looks just like the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. It should definitely be included in your sightseeing tour in Delhi, but it is more the surrounding that makes this landmark appealing. Walk in a straight line from India Gate on Rajpath Avenue towards the Rashtrapati Bhavan and be surrounded by green lawns where you could decide to picnic on a hot day. At the end of the road is the Presidents official home another impressive compound and cool place to visit in Delhi.

top 10 tourist places in delhi

5. Visit the Temple of God (Swaminarayan Akshardham)

Most followers of the Hindu religion live in India, which makes it obvious that the biggest Hindu temple is located in New Delhi. Being a well-educated world traveler I was surprised when I heard that the Temple of God, the biggest Hindu Temple in the world was also in the neighbourhood and I had never heard about it.

Swaminarayan Akshardham as it is called is an enormous and stunning piece of architecture and I found out why the word about it is not well spread. It is forbidden to take pictures in and around the temple complex. Cell phones need to be handed in as well so even cheating is not possible.

Although it is pretty far away there is a photo spot on the Noida Link Rd. Ask you tuktuk driver and he will show you.

Where to stay in Delhi

There are of course tons of hotels and guesthouses around and you are spoilt for choice. But if this is your first time visiting Delhi you might want to stay in a nice place. The Lalit Delhi in Connaught Place is a luxurious 5 star hotel, but affordable! Its location is perfect for this sightseeing in Delhi as it is in the middle of all the above mentioned places to go.

The Lalit also houses the no. 1 nightclub in Delhi: Kitty Sue and a delicious roof top restaurant called The Grill. Remember you are in India so a 5 star hotel wont cost as much as you may think! Check out the rates in the link.

A great place to stay, however I understand there are a lot of travelers with a smaller budget. Those I recommend to read the blog about where to stay in Delhi  with the best hotels and hostels for every budget.

India’s capital might not be my favourite place to go in India, but there are definitely some cool places that make it worth sightseeing for 1 day Delhi. Don't stay around too long in India's capital, but don't completely skip it either!

Going to travel around India? In 2014 I traveled 5 weeks through India, read here why I think  Pushkar it is the best city in India  or click here to check out my adventure in the mountains:  multi day trekking in Dharamsala . Last but not least I made it to the infamous but fabulous region of Kashmir. Read about  best things to do in Kasmir !

Post this, we will re-energise ourselves with a scrumptious lunch at one of the closely located and well-known restaurants. We will then head to Lotus Temple, which is internationally acclaimed for its lotus-like structure.

Next in our Delhi itinerary would be to explore, one of the most beautiful monuments from the Mughal era, Humayun’s Tomb, and last but not the least, around sunset, we will watch the Qutub Minar in the backdrop of orange hues, and then we will drop you back to your hotel.

The external facade of the temple is constructed using detailed carvings on sandstone while the flooring is done using white marbles. The temple has over 20,000 statues of various Hindu sages, devas and acharyas.

It is interesting to note that over 3,00,000,000 volunteer hours were put to use in the making of this temple, and approximately 8000 volunteers from across the globe took part in its making.

Cell phones and cameras are not allowed within the premises, meaning you spend more time in the calm and peaceful environment with friends & family and detach yourself from the digital world.

In the chaotic lanes of Old Delhi is the Red Fort which is immensely popular for being of great historical importance, both during the Mughal Era and the British Era. In 2007, it was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The fort is spread across 256 acres, and if one has an aerial view of the fort, one can see that it’s octagonal in shape. As the name suggests, it is made using red sandstones under the reign of Mughal Emperor Shahjahan.

The Red Fort once used to house precious jewels like Koh-i-Noor diamond, jade wine cup of Shah Jahan and the crown of Bahadur Shah II , which were later looted by the Britishers. The property was damaged and even partly destroyed, the ruins of which can still be witnessed.

Various parts of the fort including mosques and public baths are restricted for tourists to visit, however, one can view them by peeping through the marble fretwork or via the small glass windows.

10 Things That Delighted Us Last Week: From Collectible Playing Cards to Inflatable Knee Pillows

places to visit in delhi 1 day

We write about hundreds of products every week. Here, in our version of the Sunday circular, we’ve plucked some of our recent favorites: expert-recommended essentials, life-changing stuff you didn’t know you needed, newly launched gizmos, and very good deals we uncovered while trawling the vast online-shopping universe — including two hair-care products for avid swimmers, the caffeinated gum that boosts Steve Aoki through his longest DJ sets, and a butter-inspired rug.

The inflatable knee pillow that Waxahatchee takes everywhere

Circa Air Inflatable Knee Pillow for Side Sleepers

Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield is a side sleeper who needs a knee pillow even while traveling. The singer-songwriter told us she struggled to find an especially portable one until she discovered this inflatable number. “It takes three big breaths to blow up, and then you have a knee pillow that you can still put in your suitcase,” Crutchfield says. “I don’t overinflate it — I leave a little bit of air out of it so it has a little bit of squish.”

A $28 hair-dryer brush for better-than-Dyson blowouts

Infinitipro by Conair 1875 Watt 3-in-1 Ceramic Styler

We’ve uncovered hundreds upon hundreds of best-in-class drugstore items , but as our writers Tembe Denton-Hurst and Kitty Guo put it, “no run-of-the-mill Rite Aid or even high-end apothecary carries it all.” So we created our dream drugstore — also known as the Strategist Drugstore 100 — which collects beloved standbys, such as Bernie Sanders–approved throat lozenges , and new discoveries, like this Conair hair dryer that producer and podcast host Katie Dalebout swears does a better job than a Dyson. “The Conair’s round brush can get close enough to my scalp to straighten the particularly curly pieces near my temples, in a way all other brushes can’t,” she says.

The powder sunscreen one chef brought to Seville

Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush-On Shield SPF 50

In our latest installment of Steal My Vacation , we heard from chef Alex Wight, owner of the seasonal restaurant Crown Jewel , about her trip to southern Spain for her mom’s 70th birthday. Wright’s packing list included this tinted powder sunscreen that she wears in place of foundation: “The best part is you don’t need to wash your hands before or after you put it on because they’re not touching your face,” Wight says of the no-mess, travel-perfect formula.

The energy gum Steve Aoki chews before his DJ sets

NeuroGum

Red Bull doesn’t always cut if you’re hitting as many time zones as Steve Aoki — so he turns to Neuro Gum to help him stay alert. “If I know I’m going to have a late night DJ-ing or have back-to-back shows, I’ll chew it right when I get off the plane and am headed to the show,” Aoki told us when we asked him about his most recent favorite things.

A playing-card-obsessed writer’s favorite deck

Unfortunate Portrait Playing Cards

We love hearing about what people simply cannot stop buying, and for interior stylist Sydney Colburn , it’s playing cards . “When I see a deck I like, I just get a gut feeling and go for it,” she says. What was once just a hobby has now turned into a proper collection of over 70 decks, including this Unfortunate Portrait set she received as a birthday present. “Every single card has a different portrait on it — one ten is The Royal Tenenbaums ; the jacks include Jackie O. and Jack Nicholson,” Colburn says.

An ultra-hydrating lip balm one of our beauty writers applies all day, every day

Naturium Phyto-Glow Lip Balm

In last week’s edition of The Strategist Beauty Brief , each of our beauty writers shared their can’t-live-without lip balms . Strategist writer Arielle Avila says this Naturium formula in the mocha shade ticks all the right boxes: “My lips stay moisturized for hours and the tint is natural but noticeable.” She also appreciates that the applicator is larger than most.

The special trauma kit Jena Malone always keeps nearby

My Medic Trauma Pro Med Pack

When we talked to actress Jena Malone about her favorite things, we learned that she’s also studying to be an EMT. After completing a Community Emergency Response Team class, Malone realized the importance of owning a trauma kit — so she bought this one from My Medic, which includes, among many other useful items, “a good triangle bandage” that makes it easier to wrap wounds.

Two shampoos for post-pool showering

Ouai Detox Shampoo

Our writer Rachael Griffiths answered a reader’s question about ways to protect your hair from damage caused by pool and ocean water in our latest installment of Ask the Strategist . Griffiths laid out two steps: First, use a clarifying shampoo , like Ouai’s Detox Shampoo, at least once per week to break down the buildup of chlorine, copper, and salt on your hair. Then, rotate in a deeply hydrating shampoo, like our favorite from Malin + Goetz. “I think your hair will really appreciate the moisturizing glycerin and the fact that it’s sulfate-free — so it won’t strip away any of your hair’s natural oils,” Griffiths writes.

The ultimate accent rug for one writer with a “butter addiction”

Ban.do Butter Rug

And finally, we rang in the end of March with the monthly Our Shopping Cart roundup, where we highlight what the Strategist team has been buying for ourselves. Junior writer Bella Druckman, who “was raised to be a butter snob, with a butter addiction to match,” snagged this cheery rug . She says the classic yellow stick makes for the perfect accent rug and a great conversation starter.

The Strategist is designed to surface the most useful, expert recommendations for things to buy across the vast e-commerce landscape. Some of our latest conquests include the best acne treatments , rolling luggage , pillows for side sleepers , natural anxiety remedies , and bath towels . We update links when possible, but note that deals can expire and all prices are subject to change.

What exactly is a total solar eclipse?

There are a number of different types of eclipses, which offer different views of either the sun or moon. As NASA explains it, “A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, casting a shadow on Earth that either fully or partially blocks the sun’s light in some areas.” A total solar eclipse means the moon will completely block the sun’s face, and if you’re in the path of the eclipse, you’ll be able to see the sun’s corona and outer atmosphere, weather permitting. Other types of eclipses, like a partial solar eclipse, occur when the moon covers only some of the sun, resulting in a crescent shape.

How do people safely watch a total solar eclipse?

Not only are solar eclipses special because of their relative rarity, they’re unique in how they’re watched. For the few minutes when the moon is fully blocking the sun—know as totality—viewers can look directly at the sun without any eye protection. Any other time, including the hours before and after totality when you’ll see a partial eclipse, it’s important to wear protective eye gear, such as solar eclipse glasses. “As soon as you see even a little bit of the bright sun reappear after totality, immediately put your eclipse glasses back on or use a handheld solar viewer to look at the sun,” NASA explains.

How often do total solar eclipses happen?

Solar eclipses, of one kind or another, happen between two and five times a year. Total eclipses happen about once every 18 months. However, this doesn’t mean one will be visible from your home this often. According to the Natural History Museum, London , a total solar eclipse is viewable from any one place about once every 400 years. For example, the last total solar eclipse visible from the United States happened in 2017 and followed a track from Oregon towards South Carolina. This year, the solar eclipse’s path will start in Texas and move northeast towards Maine. The next total solar eclipse will happen in 2026 and will be visible from the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain.

How long will the total solar eclipses last?

Total solar eclipses can last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. The difference in totality length has to do with how far apart the sun, moon, and Earth are at any given time, since the latter two bodies both orbit in elliptical paths.

When the Earth is furthest from the sun—making the star appear smaller—and the moon is closest to the Earth—which makes the moon look big—totality can last for over seven minutes. As Astronomy Mag reports, these circumstances will line up in about 160 years, when a solar eclipse on July 16, 2186, will see almost seven-and-a-half minutes of totality. On the other extreme, if the Earth is at its closest point to the sun and the moon is at its furthest point from Earth, humans won’t see a total solar eclipse, even if all of the celestial bodies are in line. Since totality is all about the perspective of the viewer, this is also why each city will experience the 2024 eclipse differently.

This year, totality will last for a little over four minutes in some areas, which is significantly more than the two minutes that people experienced during the 2017 eclipse. As NASA notes, “During the 2017 total solar eclipse, the moon was a little bit farther away from Earth than it will be during the upcoming total solar eclipse, causing the path of that eclipse to be a little skinnier.” Seven years ago, the path of totality—which shows which parts of the world will be able to see the total solar eclipse—was only about 62 to 71 miles wide. This year, that path ranges from 108 to 122 miles wide. “Meaning at any given moment this eclipse covers more ground,” NASA explains.

How to read maps showing the solar eclipse path

As noted, this year’s path of totality is about 110 miles wide. Cities closer to the center of the path will sustain total darkness longer than those on the edges. In addition to longer totality than in 2017, this year’s path of totality covers more densely populated areas than the previous one. This means more people should be able to experience the total solar eclipse.

Any part of the country that is not within the path may see a partial eclipse, and the closer a location is to the strip, the smaller the crescent of visible sun will be. In these locations, it won’t be safe to look directly at the eclipse without protective glasses or a viewing device. NASA has put together an interactive map , which allows viewers to see the eclipse timing in their city.

Where are the best places to see the 2024 total solar eclipse?

According to NASA , cities in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will experience the total solar eclipse. Parts of Mexico and Canada will also fall within the eclipse’s path. Read on for the best places to see the 2024 total solar eclipse.

Mazatlán, Mexico

Mexico’s pacific coast will be the first place in continental North America to experience the eclipse. Mazatlán, a popular resort city, is an ideal location to see the occurrence, as it is directly in the eclipse’s path. Totality will begin around 11:07 a.m. local time and last for four minutes and 17 seconds. Because it’s such an optimal place to see the 2024 solar eclipse, NASA is hosting a viewing event at Vidanta Mazatlán . Here, visitors will be able to watch screens showing telescope views of the eclipse in addition to other hands-on activities, such as projects for kids and touchable moon rocks.

Torreón, Mexico

Located more centrally in the country, the solar eclipse will also be visible from Torreón. Totality will start just before 12:19 p.m. local time and last for four minutes and 12 seconds. A partial eclipse will also be visible before and after totality, starting at 11:44 a.m. and ending at 1:54 p.m.

Kerrville, Texas

Part of Texas Hill Country, Kerrville is a prime location to watch the 2024 eclipse. Near the Mexican border, it will be among the first US cities to experience totality, which will begin at 1:32 p.m. and last for almost four and a half minutes. Austin and Dallas are also in the path of totality, but will only experience the darkness for about two minutes and a little under four minutes, respectively. NASA is also hosting an event here, which will take place in Louise Hays Park and include live music, speakers, and programming for kids.

Russellville, Arkansas

Russellville, about 85 miles east of Little Rock, will experience four minutes and 12 seconds of totality, starting at 1:50 p.m. The city has planned a number of exciting programming for the historic event, including a solar eclipse festival and a concert with Grammy-winner Rhonda Vincent.

Cape Girardeau, Missouri

Located along the Mississippi River, Cape Girardeau is one of the best places in Missouri to watch the 2024 solar eclipse. According to NASA’s map, totality will last for a little over four minutes, beginning at 1:58 p.m. Head to Old Town Cape, where the city is hosting a block party on the day.

Carbondale, Illinois

Informally known as Little Egypt—possibly because the area delivered grains to northern parts of the state during the 1800s famine or because the southern tip of Illinois is similar to the Nile delta region in Egypt—Carbondale will experience four minutes and 10 seconds of totality, beginning at 1:59 p.m. The city also experienced totality during the 2017 eclipse, though it will see a longer dark period this time around. Home of Southern Illinois University, the school is hosting public viewing at its football stadium.

Bloomington, Indiana

Much of central and southern Indiana will experience totality during the 2024 solar eclipse, but Bloomington, largely a college town and home to Indiana University, will be among the best places in the Hoosier state to watch the event, since totality will last for about four minutes. The town is home to Indiana University, which is among our list of the most beautiful college campuses in America. Spend the afternoon strolling through the campus’s Gothic- and Romanesque-inspired buildings, and then catch the eclipse at 3 p.m. Indianapolis, the state’s capital, is another good city to watch the eclipse, but totality will last for less time, about three minutes and 47 seconds.

Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland won’t be in a solar eclipse’s path of totality again until 2444 , making it a once in a lifetime experience for any locals hoping to watch the eclipse from their hometown. The city will experience maximum darkness at 3:15 p.m, which will last for just under four minutes. To commemorate the moment, the Great Lake Science Center is hosting a Total Eclipse Fest on April 6 through April 8. The free outdoor event will include speakers, concerts, performances, and hands-on science activities.

Erie, Pennsylvania

Only a small portion of northern Pennsylvania will be within the path of totality. Erie, located along the shores of the lake of the same name, will be one of the best places in the state to see the eclipse. Totality will last for three minutes and 42 seconds, starting at 3:16 p.m. The local government has put together a map of public parks and other viewing locations to watch the spectacle.

Buffalo, New York

Buffalo, New York, will see three minutes and 46 seconds of total darkness, beginning at 3:18 p.m. There are a number of public “ watch parties ” happening in the city, which the government has compiled for visitors and locals. Midcentury-modern architecture fans may want to use the day to visit Graycliff, a Frank Lloyd Wright–designed estate, which is hosting a special open house on April 8, allowing guests to watch the eclipse from the property.

Niagara Region, Ontario

Small parts of Canada will also witness total darkness during the 2024 eclipse. The Niagara region is the best place to see totality, which will start at 3:19 p.m. and last for three minutes and 15 seconds. Montreal will also experience totality, but only for a little over one minute.

Burlington, Vermont

Much of New England will miss out on totality during the 2024 eclipse, as the path will only cover parts of northern Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Burlington is among the best places for those in the region to travel to, as it will experience three minutes and 19 seconds of darkness, starting at 3:26 p.m.

Houlton, Maine

Maine is the northern most place in the United States to see the total eclipse in 2024, also making it the last place in the country to experience totality. Houlton will be among the best places in the state to watch the sight, and darkness will begin at 3:32 p.m. and last for three minutes and 20 seconds.
