Half a million pilgrims come to the quiet, riverside town of Ste-Anne de Beaupré each year, the home of the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré. 11. Minor Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel

Well, your trip wouldn’t be complete without visiting the biggest Roman Catholic Church in the entire Quezon Province especially if you’re a Catholic, right? That’s why dropping by the Minor Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel or simply known as the Susi ng Tayabas should definitely be part of your itinerary.

The reason why it’s called “Susi” is because of its beautiful key-shaped appearance from the top view. Built way back in the year 1585, the church maintained its impressive architectural design, its iconic long aisle, and the giant century-old church bells even though it underwent several reconstructions and repairs. So make sure to take some nice pictures with the Susi ng Tayabas on your background to serve as one of your souvenirs in visiting Quezon!

12. Puting Buhangin | Kwebang Lampas

Probably the most popular and trending beach destination in the whole of Quezon Province is the iconic Puting Buhangin Beach and Kwebang Lampas. From the name of the beach itself, you’ll be amazed by the world-class beauty of its white sands, turquoise waters, and relaxing ambiance. It’s actually more like a cove because it’s just a very short strip of white sands. You can easily walk from end to end in just a matter of minutes! So if I were you, I’d maximize and enjoy all the solo time I can get here at Puting Buhangin Beach because it can really get crowded especially during peak seasons.

Of course, your trip wouldn’t be complete without swimming through the ever-famous Kwebang Lampas! It’s actually one of the highlights of the beach so make sure not to miss out. Swim around, relax under the sun, and take a whole lot of nice pictures!

13. Kamayan sa Palaisdaan

After a long and tiring day of exploring every must-visit attraction of Quezon Province, it’s finally time to just sit back, relax, and enjoy the gastronomical feast offered to us by the Kamayan sa Palaisdaan Restaurant! Obviously from the name itself, the specialties of this restaurant focus on freshly-cooked seafood dishes.

Kamayan sa Palaisdaan also pioneered the concept of floating restaurants where you’ll be able to feast and dine with all the fish and ponds surrounding you. They also have a bar and a café so basically everything you’re craving can be easily offered by Kamayan sa Palaisdaan!

14. Lucena Cathedral

After filling up your tummies thanks to the amazing gastronomical feast prepared by Kamayan sa Palaisdaan, it’s now time to visit one of the most significant landmarks of Quezon Province.

The Lucena Cathedral also known as the Saint Ferdinand Cathedral Parish tucked within the heart of the city proper itself is definitely a must-visit destination in the province. This Baroque-style church was founded in 1881 and since then, every first-time traveler to Lucena City traditionally stopped by the Lucena Cathedral to offer their prayers.

Oh, and since the cathedral is located right at the heart of Lucena City’s poblacion, you should also grab the chance to wander around and buy some souvenirs, pasalubongs, and even dine in some of the famous restaurants like Cafe Antigua.

15. Pulong Kukok in Polillo

Finally, our last destination in Quezon Province is a little bit hard to reach given that it takes about 3 hours of boat ride to dock to this islet. Well, I know that’s quite a long time but trust me when I say that it will all be totally worth it! The remote location of Pulong Kukok in the Polillo Islands enabled it to maintain the fine white sands of the beach. The surrounding waters are also very crystal clear giving you the chance to snorkel or dive deep into the colorful ecosystem of the island. There are also beautiful limestone rock formations tucked around which are perfect for taking Instagrammable photos!

Be careful though because Pulong Kukok is also known as a habitat for sea snakes, giving it the nickname of Snake Island for some. Pulong Kukok is now gaining popularity after being featured in the hit show Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, or KMJS. So book a trip here while it’s still not too crowded!

It’s the oldest French-speaking community in North America, it’s the only walled city north of Mexico and it’s home to the world’s most photographed hotel.

MNBAQ is one of the top Quebec tourist attractions. It’s easy to see why, as it showcases a remarkable collection of fine art. This includes paintings, sculptures and decorative arts spanning various periods and styles. The museum is located in a historic building, to which modern sections have been added. The museum's architecture is a piece of art itself: a beautiful and unique blend of modernity and tradition. MNBAQ is a good place to see local Quebec and indigenous art too. It is located near the Plains of Abraham and Rue Cartier, which is the perfect spot for a meal or drink.  

6. Musee de la Civilisation

Whether you're interested in ancient civilizations, contemporary social issues or Quebec's rich heritage, Musée de la Civilisation offers an insightful journey that will leave you with a deeper understanding of the world around us. The museum is located in the Old Port. It regularly features activities and workshops for children, so it’s worth consulting its official website to plan your visit.

7. Sledding at Le Massif

I must say, sledding on a luge at Le Massif is one of the most fun winter activities in Quebec City I have ever done around my hometown. The luge trail stretches out for a thrilling 7.5 kilometres of downhill fun. From the summit of the mountain, there are breathtaking views of the St Lawrence River and surrounding snow-covered mountains.

A car is necessary to reach Le Massif from Quebec City as it's about a 75-minute drive away. If your budget allows it, I recommend staying the night at the nearby Club Med Hotel.

8. Aquarium du Quebec

One of the top things to do in Quebec City, the Aquarium du Quebec is home to an array of Nordic creatures that you don’t get to see elsewhere. This includes polar bears, seals, arctic foxes and owls. 

The two indoor pavilions are home to hundreds of varieties of fish and wildlife species. Seal and polar bear feeding shows are scheduled throughout the day too. It’s open year-round but the summer season offers a few more activities for kids. Village Vacances Valcartier is a fun vacation spot. In the summer, you can enjoy a ton of water-based activities like water slides, lazy rivers and swimming pools at their awesome water park. When winter comes, the village turns into a magical snowy wonderland with thrilling adventures like snow tubing, ice skating and snow rafting. The easiest way to get there is by car and it’s only a 35-minute drive from Old Quebec.

10.  Ice Hotel

The Ice Hotel in Quebec City is an incredible seasonal hotel entirely made of ice and snow. It’s one of the top Quebec City attractions in winter, but the ultimate adventure is to book a stay and spend a night in one of the icy rooms. However, if that’s out of your budget or you’re not keen to stay overnight, you can still visit the hotel, including the ice bar and the ice chapel (if it isn’t hosting a wedding).

Conveniently located next to Village Vacances Valcartier, it's ideal to combine both visits in one day for an unforgettable icy adventure.

11. Observatoire de la Capitale

From Observatoire de La Capitale’s elevated vantage point, you can enjoy panoramic views of Quebec City and the surrounding landscape. The Observatoire is located in the tallest building in Quebec City so it offers 360-degree views of the city. An alternative way to enjoy breathtaking views of Quebec City from up high is by visiting Ciel! Bistro Bar, Quebec's only revolving restaurant. Ciel! Bistro Bar offers a fantastic alternative to the Observatoire de la Capitale, as your money is spent on a culinary experience rather than an entrance ticket. Additionally, the restaurant boasts more flexible opening hours; providing you with ample opportunities to take in the panoramic vistas.

 13. Rooftop Heated Pool at Hilton Quebec

The Hilton Quebec features a rooftop heated pool open year-round. You don't even have to be a hotel guest to enjoy it! For a fee, the pool is open to the general public, allowing everyone to indulge in a refreshing swim while taking in the picturesque surroundings. You won’t get a 360-degree view and it is not nearly as high up as the Observatoire or Ciel! Bistro Bar, but you’ll still see a bit of Old Quebec from up high.

14.  Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride

In Old Quebec, you can take a horse-drawn carriage guided tour of the Old Town. However, in my opinion, it can be a hit-or-miss experience since bookings are not available in advance. The waiting and pick-up spot for Quebec City carriage rides is at Places d'Armes near Chateau Frontenac (on Rue St-Louis, the opposite side of Chateau Frontenac).

15.  Bear Watching Near Quebec City

Most people don’t know that it’s possible to see black bears in their natural habitat near Quebec City. At Station Duchesnay, visitors have the incredible opportunity to see bears up close from the safety of a bus . This unique tour provides a typically North American and memorable experience. Duchesnay is a 45-minute drive from Old Quebec.

16.  Dog Sledding at Lake Beauport

Book a dog sledding tour at Pourvoirie du Lac Beauport for an outdoor adventure with lovable husky pups. The pilot of the sled stands while the passenger sits in front, swapping spots halfway through the loop trail. This unique experience is a lot of fun but quite the cardio workout as the person in the back sometimes has to push or help the dogs uphill. 17.  Ski and Snowboard at Stoneham

Stoneham Ski Resort is one of the best spots near Quebec City for skiing and snowboarding. With a mix of beginner, intermediate and advanced runs, there are conditions for every level. Many visitors have a blast on the night trails at Stoneham as well. New skiers, snowboarders or anyone looking to hone their skills can take a lesson at the TELUS Winter Sports School too. The Alpins boutique also has top-of-the-line winter gear, equipment rentals and a repair shop. 

18.  Stay at Club Med Charlevoix

Luxury meets outdoor activities galore at Club Med Charlevoix. This all-inclusive resort outside Quebec City is perfect for couples or families looking for skiing, ice skating and luging in winter. In the summer, you can go biking, hiking or even whale watching! One major perk of Club Med Charlevoix is the unbeatable views of the Saint Lawrence River and Charlevoix Mountains. 

19.  Visit Benjo With Kids

If you’re travelling with children, one of the best activities in Old Quebec is visiting the Benjo Toy Store. Creative details like a mini VIP entrance for kids, a small train running on weekends and the giant robot named Monsieur Bidule make it the best toy store in Quebec. Inside, you’ll find everything from Legos and cars to dolls, soft toys, candy, books, puzzles and puppets. There is something for every curious kiddo at Benjo! 

20.  Quebec-Levis Ferry Ride

Take a ride on the Quebec-Levis Ferry to enjoy top-notch views of Old Quebec City and Chateau Frontenac from a distance. Once in Levis, explore the wharf area, which is home to several local eateries and cafes. You can choose to take your car across the Saint Lawrence River, load your bike onto the ferry to enjoy riverside trails or simply go on foot. 

21.  Parliament Building

The Parliament Building is one of the top things to do in Quebec City for history buffs as it dates back to 1877. This opulent building is a must-see stop where you can take a self-guided tour or sign up for a tour led by a historian. You’ll get to check out Quebecois artwork, grand French-style architecture, exhibits and the National Assembly Chamber itself. 

22.  Try Maple Toffee on Petit Champlain

Stop by La Petite Cabane à Sucre to taste some of Quebec City’s most iconic maple treats. Test out fresh maple syrup, maple butter and maple ice cream. Their famous maple taffy rolled on ice is especially a one-of-a-kind Canadian experience. La Petite Cabane à Sucre is located along the charming Petit Champlain in Lower Old Quebec.

Hop in your car and take a 30-minute road trip from Quebec City to Canyon Sainte-Anne. Here, you’ll discover a roaring waterfall and gorge, suspension bridges, Via Ferrata (a mix of hiking and rock climbing) and even zip lines. 24. Funiculaire Ride

The Funiculaire Ride is the best way to travel from the Upper Town to the Lower Town via an escalator-style cable car. This is a lovely way to view Petit Champlain, the Old Port and the Saint Lawrence River. Buy tickets online beforehand or at the boarding points. One is behind the Fairmont Hotel along the edge of the Dufferin Terrace and the other is in the Louis Jolliet House if you’re coming from Basse Ville. Although there is usually a queue during Christmas time, the wait is worth it. 

25. Toboggan Slide on Terrasse Dufferin

The toboggan slide is one of the most exciting and oldest activities in Old Quebec, dating back to 1884. You can zoom down the ice tube track solo, with a buddy or fit up to four on your wooden sled. After your race to the bottom, you can buy another ticket to ride again. But get ready to trek back up the hill with your toboggan. The effort is worth the fantastic adrenaline rush!

26. Wendake

Wendake is known for its authentic Huron village recreations and is home to an array of local artisans. Fortunately, it’s located just outside of Quebec City. Visit the Onhoüa Cheteke Traditional Huron Site to learn about the local people of the Huron-Wendat Nation through exhibitions and demonstrations. Then stop by Musee Huron-Wendat to see artifacts and artwork. A trip to Wendake will show you a very interesting and important side of Québec culture.

27.  Restaurant Sagamité

Discover more about Huron-Wendat heritage through gastronomy at Sagamité restaurant. Named after a classic and hearty soup, Sagamité offers a menu of traditional recipes with a modern spin. The dishes represent the values of the Nation such as the house special, Yatista, which shows the importance of fire. Get a taste of indigenous cuisine at either of the Sagamité locations in Wendake or Quebec City. 

28. German Christmas Markets

• Winter (November 23 to December 23)

Get in the holiday spirit at the German Christmas Markets in Old Quebec, as Quebec City comes to life, decked out in Christmas lights and decorations. The European-style festival can be found at the Dufferin Terrace, Place d’Armes, Place d’Youville and along Rue Saint Anne. The month-long celebration hosts performances, Christmas choirs and carolers, festive activities, shopping and German holiday delicacies like bratwurst, cookies and mulled wine.

29. Winter Carnival (Carnaval de Québec)

• Winter (February)

Winter Carnival dates back to 1894 as a way to beat the cold, long winter. Today, the tradition lives on with 10 days of winter celebrations. This is one of the best things to do in Old Quebec in winter. Witness ice sculptures, an ice palace, lights and parades, and enjoy activities like skating, sleigh rides and canoe racing. 30. Grosse Île

• Summer to fall (May to October)

Grosse Île is one of the top historic things to do near Quebec City; offering a window into the past of Canada’s Irish immigrants. At the Irish Memorial National Historic Site, undergo a pretend medical inspection as the original immigrants did and then board a trolley to see more of the area.  Explore the island by bike or on foot, reaching Saint-Luc-de-la-Grosse-Île Village and the Irish cemetery along the interpretive trail. To get to Grosse Île by car, take the Les Croisières Lachance boat.

Quezon Province is now a premium ecotourism site in the Philippines. Although it is very much accessible from Metro Manila, much of the province’s vast and varied landscapes remain unexplored. These are home to fascinating ecological wonders that will make up for a lifelong thrill and adventure. 

Sure, there are well-documented tourism destinations in Quezon. But in its remote areas, one can find countless beaches, waterfalls, caves, and thriving forest ecosystems.

All these warrant the need for protection and sustainable management. Thankfully, eco-tourism is helping do just that.

If you’re planning to visit, here are the must-see destinations in Quezon you should not miss.

Behold Quezon Province Tourist Spot

1. mount banahaw.

With an impressive height of 7,120 feet above sea level, Mt Banahaw is the highest mountain in the CALABARZON region. It is also one of the region’s last ecological frontiers, home to critically-endangered flora and fauna species.

Mt Banahaw covers an area of more than 10, 901 hectares that consist mainly of secondary forests on the lower slopes. Enchanting mossy forests, however, dominate the upper elevations.

When exploring the mountain, you’ll find numerous waterfalls, crystal-clear streams, caves, rock formations, and shrines. Since 2016, however, the local authorities closed Mt Banahaw for regeneration purposes.

2. Balagbag Falls

Balagbag Falls is one of the emerging tourist spots in Quezon province, especially for adventurers and nature lovers. It is a multi-tier waterfall surrounded by lush vegetation.

It’s also very much accessible, some 5 minutes of walk from the parking area. The first layer has a deep pool, fit for swimming. You can climb on one of the cliffs and jump towards the pool.

3. Noknok Falls

Noknok Falls is just a kilometer away from Balagbag Falls, making it possible for you to visit and enjoy both in a day or less. It has a height of 10 meters with a naturally-built pool that is ideal for cliff-jumping. 

Noknok Falls is one of the lesser-known tourist destinations and one of the best places to see in Quezon province.

• Trekking Time: 10 minutes from the Real-Mauban Road

4. Polillo Group of Islands

It’s one of the best eco-tourism spots in Quezon province, consisting of 27 remote and unspoiled islands. Among the most popular destinations here are Pulong Kukok, Minasawa Bird Sanctuary, Anilon Island, Anawan Island, Isla Putting Bato, and Kabalu Sandbar.

There are also several caves for you to explore, including forest-clad and colossal limestone rock formations. If you’re after deserted beaches and pristine waters, you should come here.

But please, be responsible. Let us all help in keeping the islands’ pristine condition.

5. Borawan Beach

Balesin Beach is one of the top Quezon province tourist spots. Known for its white beaches with pristine waters, the island could easily make up for a lifelong adventure and fun.

Among the favorite things to do here are paddle boating, kayaking, bird watching, scuba diving, surfing, and sailing. If you’re up for more, stroll around the island and catch sight of huge limestone rock formations.

These limestone rocks will make you feel like you are in Coron or El Nido in Palawan.

6. Quezon National Park

Quezon National Park hosts one of the few remaining natural ecosystems in Quezon. It is home to a variety of flora and fauna species, some of which are critically-endangered.

Many of the species here are found nowhere else in the world, making it a botanical paradise. Trekking to the deep forests will lead you to enchanting caves, and scenic peaks.

Sadly, deforestation for commercial purposes is slowly ravaging what remains of the park.

• Location/Jump-off: Atimonan, Pagbilao, Padre Burgos

7. Mount Mirador

Mount Mirador is the highest peak in Quezon National Forest Park. With a height of 1200 feet above sea level, Mt Mirador offers a memorable hiking experience.

Pristine forests cover most of the mountain, and there are also massive limestone rock formations to see. It is one of the rising tourist spots in Quezon province.

8. Salibungot Beach

If you’re done chasing white beaches, why not check out Salibungot Beach for an unusual escapade. The beach here has golden sands complementing the crystal-blue waters.

It’ll surely thrill you running on the powdery sands as you relish the sea breeze and the lush pine forests. Both locals and tourists love coming here to catch a breathtaking view of the sunset.

You can also camp here for the night to make up the most of your rustic adventure.

• Location/Jump-off: Jomalig Island
• Boating Time: 4-5 hours

9. Pinlac Falls

Pinlac Falls nestles on the forest-clad mountains of Infanta. It has multiple layers with refreshing and crystal-clear waters. Locals love coming here to enjoy the rustic atmosphere and have a refreshing swim.

• Location/Jump-off: Brgy Magsaysay, Infanta
• Trekking Time: 10 minutes from the highway

10. Kanaway Beach

Kanawan Beach also lies within Jomalig Island and is one of the off-beaten tourist spots in Quezon province. Just like Salibungot Beach, it also has golden sands that stretch for as much as 400 meters!

There are also two islets nearby you can explore. If you’re into less touristy destinations, then Kanaway Beach should make up to your bucket list. 

11. Dampalitan Island

Although it’s popularly promoted as an island, it is a beach on a small peninsula of mainland Quezon province. It has powdery white sands similar to those found in Boracay Island.

There are also pine forests lining the beach, and you can just lean on one of these and relax the whole day. There are cottages available if you plan to have an overnight stay.

• Boating Time: 15 minutes from Borawan Beach

12. Agos River

Agos River is one of the cleanest rivers in Quezon province. The mighty river emanates from the forested mountains of Sierra Madre. For the Dumagat Indigenous Group, the river is sacred, therefore, tied to their cultural identity.

Sadly, a mega-dam project is threatening the river the local inhabitants, including abundant wildlife. Hopefully, the locals will continue to gain support in their campaign to save the Agos River from the Kaliwa Dam project.

13. Cagbalete Island

Cagbalete Island covers more than 1600 hectares, and on its coasts, you’ll find several beaches with powdery, white sands. During low tide, a beautiful sandbar forms.

The island is also known for its rich and thriving marine biodiversity. Among the activities, you can do here are horseback riding, bird watching, island hopping, and snorkeling.

For an overnight stay, there are a few accommodations available. But if I were you, I would choose camping on the beach to enjoy nature at its finest.

• Boating Time: one hour from Mauban town

14. Alitap Falls

Tucked in the remote highlands, Alitap Falls is one of the off-beaten Quezon destinations. It has several layers, each with unique features to offer. The main waterfall measures around 40 meters high and cascades on a scenic cliff amid green foliage.

To get here, expect to walk on slippery trails, cross rivers, and navigate on jungles. But surely, the mesmerizing views of the waterfalls will make up for you to experience an adventure of a lifetime.

• Location/Jump-off: Brgy Alitap, Mauban
• Trekking Time: 3-4 hours

15. Dahoyhoy Falls

Among the twenty-plus falls found in Mauban, Dahoyhoy Falls is the most popular and accessible. Trails leading to it are well established. But even so, it remains a generally off-beaten Quezon destination. It’s only around 15 feet high with waters cascading on a seemingly-terraced rock platform.

• Location/Jump-off: Brgy Macasin, Mauban
• Entrance Fee: Php 10 for adults, Php 5 for kids
• Trekking Time: 30 minutes

16. Balesin Island

Balesin Island is among the most popular tourist spots in Quezon province. It covers around 500 hectares with beautiful coastlines featuring white-sand beaches.

The island, however, is only for members as it is a luxury resort. To become a member, you have to afford the starting fee, which is Php 3 million!

But you don’t have to spend that kind of amount since there are budget-friendly options out there.

• Location/Jump-off: Polilo Island

17. Kamay ni Hesus Shrine

If you’re after a memorable pilgrimage experience, especially during the Lenten season, you might want to visit Kamay ni Hesus Shrine. There is regular healing mass offered here.

On a hill, you’ll find a 5-feet statue of Jesus Christ. From here, you’ll also catch a panoramic view of the surrounding landscapes, including Mt Banahaw. It is one of the most frequented tourist spots in Quezon province.

18. Villa Escudero

Eating your meals before a restaurant would be a unique experience, right? Well, you can try that at Villa Escudero , which hosts the iconic Labasin Falls.

Although it’s a man-made resort, the sceneries here are rustic. It will make you feel like you are in a jungle setting. Other exciting things to do here are bamboo rafting, swimming, and trekking.

There is also a huge museum featuring artifacts that showcase the rich cultural heritage and history of the Philippines.

19. Minor Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel

The Minor Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel is a century-old masterpiece built during the Spanish times. It features a Baroque style of architecture and is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Quezon.

The locals dub it as, “The Key of Tayabas,” because the church’s blueprint resembles a key. Inside the church, you’ll find Neo-classical altars. It has a historical clock, one of the largest and oldest church clocks in Asia, attached to the belfry.

20. Puting Buhangin (Kwebang Lampas)

Puting Buhangin literally means white sands. Unlike in other famous beaches in Quezon province, the sands here are cleaner and whiter. Located on the coast of Pagbilao Grande Island, Puting Buhangin is accessible from Borawan Beach via a 3-40 minute boat ride.

There are available nipa huts where you can have your meals as you gaze on the magnificent view of the beach and sea.

15 Best Things to Do in Quebec City, Canada

Founded in 1608, Quebec City has a rich history and heritage for you to delve into with centuries-old buildings, churches, and fortifications wherever you look. As well as attractive and impressive architecture, the city is also set in a stunning spot overlooking the Saint Lawrence River.

Fiercely proud and protective of its French-Canadian identity and language, Quebec City acts as the heart, soul of the province of the same name. Many of its museums and tourist attractions highlight this rich heritage, as does its packed schedule of festivals and cultural events.

With so many exciting things to do in Quebec City and so much history, culture, and nature to explore, the provincial capital of Quebec is certainly not to be missed when in Canada.

15. Fortifications of Quebec National Historic Site

The only city walls still standing in North America outside of Mexico, the Fortifications of Quebec are now protected as part of a National Historic Site. Erected in the seventeenth century, the sturdy ramparts, gates and towers, played a deciding role in the defense of the colony and withstood several sieges by the French and Americans.

Expanded and improved at various times over the centuries, the well-restored walls now stretch nearly three miles in length and encircle Old Quebec. Wander along its ramparts and enjoy commanding views of the city and its landmarks. You can learn about its history through the informative displays dotted about.

14. Musee National des Beaux-Arts du Quebec (MNBAQ)

Boasting one of the biggest art collections in Canada is the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec, which can be found in Battlefields Park. While its main focus is on artworks produced in the province, the museum has over 40,000 paintings, prints and sculptures by artists from other parts of the country, as well as the rest of the world.

Opened in 1933, the museum’s colossal collection now sprawls over four buildings with the pavilions being connected by a series of underground passages. Of particular interest is its excellent exhibit on Inuit Art with big names, such as Jean-Paul Lemieux and Fernand Leduc, also on display.

13. Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre

Set alongside the Saint Lawrence River is the beautiful Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre which exhibits some incredible architecture. Named for the province’s patron saint, the basilica is visited by millions of pilgrims and tourists each year and is said to cure the sick and disabled.

It was completed in 1946 after having been the site of an important shrine for centuries. The gorgeous Romanesque Revival building sports two tall towers and a lovely rose window. Its interior is just as arresting as it is decorated with colorful frescoes and stone statues. At its entrance, you can see the canes and crutches that have been left behind by the cured.

12. La Promenade des Gouverneurs

A very popular place to stroll around is La Promenade des Gouverneurs, which stretches around a mile in length. Starting near both Chateau Frontenac and Terrasse Dufferin, the elevated boardwalk meanders past fantastic viewpoints and interesting historic landmarks before ending up at Battlefields Park.

Built in 1958, the promenade impressively hugs the side of a steep cliff with steps taking you up and down its leafy tree-lined paths. On one side you have the fortifications of the old citadel with phenomenal views out over Lower Quebec and the waters of the Saint Lawrence River on the other.

11. Parliament Building

The stunning Parliament Building can be found perched atop a hill just outside of the city walls, not far from both the citadel and Battlefields Park. The seat of the province’s government, it lies amidst some lovely gardens which are dotted with superb statues of influential figures from the history of Quebec.

Built in 1886, it exhibits some striking Second Empire architecture with a tall clock tower rising above its fine facade that features people and places from the province’s past. On tours, you can learn all about the history of the building, the province and its government and even attend parliamentary proceedings.

10. Morrin Centre

Situated in the heart of Old Quebec is the Morrin Centre which offers a fascinating insight into the history of the city. Formerly a prison, it now hosts an English-language library and learning centre and was designated a National Historic Site in 1981.

Within the stately stone building, you can find a marvelous Victorian-era library with ancient tomes and rare books lining its shelves from floor to ceiling. Visitors can take tours around the facility and see elegant halls alongside gloomy jail cells. There are also antique furnishings and age-old artifacts from when the building was constructed in 1712.

9. Old Quebec Funicular

A wonderful way to get from Lower Town to Upper Town is to take a ride on the Old Quebec Funicular, which links the two together. Besides helping you avoid the steep Breakneck Stairs, it also offers some great views of the city and river down below as you go.

Founded in 1879, the railway takes visitors both up or down the cliffside at a steep 45-degree angle. While it only takes a couple of minutes to ascend the 200 feet to Upper Town, the ride is well worth it for the historic look and feel of the funicular.

8. Battlefields Park

Lying just a short stroll to the west of the center is the sprawling Battlefields Park, popular with both locals and tourists alike. The park is so named because it is the site of the 1759 Battle of the Plains of Abraham when the British beat the French and so influenced the creation of Canada.

Due to its strategic setting on the banks of the Saint Lawrence River, and its important military past, Battlefields Park is littered with historical artillery pieces, as well as four Martello towers. It also has lots of pretty green spaces, picnic areas and playing fields for people to make use of.

7. Musee de la Civilisation

Offering an interesting look into the cultures and communities of Quebec, the Musée de la Civilisation can be found not far from Place Royale, overlooking the Saint Lawrence River. Its extensive galleries house collections of artworks, artifacts and archaeological findings that shine a light on the history of the area.

Since opening in 1988, the museum has been a firm favorite with locals and tourists thanks to its interactive exhibits and innovative architecture. As well as having fascinating sections on the past, present and future of the province’s Indigenous peoples, it also regularly hosts special exhibits and cultural events.

6. Place Royale

While it may look like just another pretty plaza, Place Royale was the first site in the city to be settled by Samuel de Champlain back in 1608. Long the center of life and commerce in Quebec, it is well worth visiting for its historic importance, architecture and charming ambience.

Lining the small cobbled square are lots of beautiful old buildings which now house cafes and boutiques. At the birthplace of the French colony, you’ll also find the arresting Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Church which dates to 1723 and is one of the oldest churches in all North America.

5. La Citadelle

Covering a huge part of the center of the city is a colossal citadel, which was built over decades by the French, and then British, to protect Quebec from a potential American attack. Known as ‘La Citadelle’ in French, the star-shaped fort has lovely green spaces and sturdy fortifications for you to explore as well as a great on-site museum.

Due to its strategic location, Cap Diamant has been the site of several forts over the centuries with the current citadel dating to 1850. Besides exploring the National Historic Site and learning about its history, visitors can also watch its daily changing of the guard ceremony.

4. Montmorency Falls Park

Just fifteen minutes’ drive to the northeast of town is one of the area’s most astounding natural sights, the majestic Montmorency Falls. Set in a scenic park of the same name, the waterfall towers to a huge 275 feet which is much taller than the famed Niagara Falls.

While its white wall of water certainly makes for some fabulous photos, the park itself is also well worth exploring. Besides a suspension bridge and cable car that offer up commanding views over the falls, it also has some terrific hiking trails, playgrounds and even zip-lines for visitors to enjoy.

3. Cathedral-Basilica of Notre-Dame de Quebec

The oldest church in Canada, the Cathedral-Basilica of Notre-Dame de Québec has stood in the same spot since 1647. Although it has been burnt down and destroyed numerous times throughout its long history, the basilica has always bounced back, bigger and better than before.

Located in the heart of Old Quebec, the current cathedral exhibits a somewhat austere exterior with its hulking great grey facade topped by two asymmetrical towers. Inside is another story entirely, as the illuminated interior is decorated with shimming treasures, colourful stained glass windows, and historical religious paintings.

2. Terrasse Dufferin

One of the most popular places to spend time in the city is at Terrasse Dufferin, which offers stunning views out over Old Quebec and the Saint Lawrence River. Perched atop a cliff, the long boardwalk wraps its way around Chateau Frontenac, the historic hotel that dominates the city’s skyline.

Built in 1879 under the direction of Lord Dufferin, after whom it is named, the wooden plank walkway is dotted with quaint old gazebos, lamp posts and benches with historic cannons also on show. The area also has an appealing ambience as street performers and artists often line the terrace.

The historic heart of the city, Old Quebec is home to an incredible array of attractions with beautiful buildings and charming streets wherever you look. Presided over by Chateau Frontenac, it is made up of both Upper Town and Lower Town with the old port and Battlefields Park lying to either side.

Enclosed within its crenelated walls are not only numerous museums and monuments but Place Royale, the first site settled in the city. The historic area also boasts countless centuries-old buildings, and standout sights include its citadel and cathedral.

The highlight of many people’s visit, Old Quebec has a lovely atmosphere with innumerable shops and restaurants also being on offer.

• Mount-Royal park : Enjoy a bit of greenery in the heart of Montreal! In this park, you will discover many shaded trails and beautiful viewpoints. Don’t miss the Mount Royal Belvedere: it’s the best place to admire the whole southern part of the city. And, how about a picnic along Beaver Lake? This artificial lake, with its playground for children and bar-restaurant with a terrace, is the perfect place to spend a summer afternoon. During your stay in Quebec, you should definitely visit the province’s capital and 2nd largest city, Quebec City . This UNESCO World Heritage site has a more European feel than Montreal. It feels a bit like my home country, France!

Quebec City’s best points of interest are:

• The Château Frontenac, the city’s most iconic landmark
• The Quartier du Petit-Champlain, North America’s oldest Neighborhood, with its Place Royale and pretty pedestrian alleys.
• Taking a stroll along the Terrasse Dufferin and enjoy its incredible view of  the Saint-Lawrence river and the Île d’Orléans.
• The Citadel of Quebec and its fortified walls

If you’re visiting Quebec City between late January and mid-February, then you have to attend the Carnaval of Quebec, or Quebec Winter Carnival. It’s definitely one of the province’s major events.

Every year, thousands of people are coming to Quebec City to enjoy the world’s biggest winter carnival.

You will discover a large number of events and contests during these 2 weeks, including the international Snow and Ice sculpture competition, day and night parades, the famous Snow Bath, the icy canoe races, and many other activities such as giant board games, ice skating, sledging,…

Also, don’t forget to take a souvenir photo with the carnival’s mascot, “Bonhomme Carnaval”. This huge white man wearing a red tuque can be seen all over the carnival.

If you want to stay in Quebec City during the carnival , you should book your accommodation as early as possible . People are coming from all over the world for the carnival, and the best places to stay are often booked months in advance.

When visiting Quebec province, you should also see the Montmorency Falls, located 40 minutes away from Quebec City.

These 83-meter high falls are higher than the Niagara falls. The place is really impressive, especially in winter, as the river can be completely frozen.

There are many points of views to observe the falls. You can access them with the cable-car, the panoramic stairs or the suspension bridge. And if you’re looking for a thrilling experience, you should definitely try the 300-meter zip line and the “via ferrata”.

The Quebec province is one of the best places in the world to go whale watching, and you should really spend an afternoon trying to get a look at these huge cetaceans.

It’s among the most popular attractions in the region for both locals and tourists. The whale watching season starts in May and end in October.

You can go whale watching almost everywhere in Quebec, but the best place is definitely the North coast, and more specifically Tadoussac, a small village located close to the Saguenay Fjord and the Saint-Lawrence estuary.

There, you will have the choice between 3 different sea trips: a 3-hour cruise in a big boat, a 2-hour small zodiac tour or even a sea kayak excursion if you’re feeling adventurous!

If you’re choosing the Zodiac tour , you will get really close to the whales, and it’s quite impressive. Remember to dress warmly!

Here are the average rates for these 3 different sea trips:

• 3-hour cruise on a big boat (around 100 people on board) : 70$ per person
• 2-hour zodiac tour (between 10 and 30 passengers) : 60$ per person
• 2-hour sea kayak trip: 70$ per person

If you want to enjoy a magnificent and colorful scenery, then you should definitely visit Quebec in autumn.

Starting from late September, the trees are turning orange and red , creating a breathtaking postcard landscape. It’s also the best season to plan beautiful hikes during your itinerary in Quebec.

The best places to admire the stunning autumn colors in Quebec are:

• Mont Tremblant National Park: the marked trail starting from the village and reaching the summit is really nice, and you will get a beautiful view of the lake located below
• Jacques Cartier National Park, featuring more than 100 km of marked trails
• Mont-Sainte-Anne, one of the best places to admire the autumn colors
• The Cap Tourmente National Wildlife Area, where you can also observe many Snow Geese.
• The Vallée Bras du Nord

You should travel to Quebec between the 1st and the 15th of October to enjoy the best autumn colors.

Snow Tubing and Rafting are clearly among the funniest things to do in Quebec during winter. You just have to slide down the slopes riding an inner tube, a buoy or a raft.

It’s really awesome!

If you’re looking for steep slopes, tight turns, huge bumps and thrilling speeds up to 100 km/h, you’re at the right place! And thanks to the mechanical lifts, you will slide all day and go up the slopes without any excessive effort.

You can go Snow Tubing in many parks, but I would recommend Saint Jean de Matha, located only 100 km away from Montreal. There, I spent a whole day without waiting much between my slides, as there wasn’t too many people.

It was a wonderful day and we enjoyed a perfect family atmosphere. A full-day ticket costs 28$ (VAT not included).

In Saint Jean de Matha, you can also enjoy cross-country skiing, snowshoe hiking or ice skating. And of course, you can eat on the spot as there’s a restaurant. Be aware that the minimal height for snow rafting is 1m25.

If you’re visiting Quebec during winter, you should spend a few days in the countryside. And how about a snowmobile or dog sled ride to discover its magnificent preserved landscape?

In Quebec, you will find many Outfitters (or “Pourvoiries” in French) offering dog sled rides. A 1-hour ride costs around 75$ per person. And if you want to go snowmobiling, a half-day (3h30) costs around 120$. You can also go snowmobiling and dog sledding on the same day for 240$.

You must be at least 21 and pay a 2000$ deposit to drive a snowmobile in Quebec.

During your weekend in the Quebec countryside, you can also discover ice fishing . Dig a hole in the ice and try to catch your dinner! A half-day ice fishing costs around 65$ per person, including the equipment.

The best regions to enjoy winter activities in Quebec are Gaspé Peninsula, the Laurentides, La Mauricie, the Eastern Townships and Saguenay Lac-Saint-Jean. The snow conditions are often perfect there!

If you’re willing to spend a few days away from the big cities, then you should visit Gaspé Peninsula and its amazing scenery.

The easiest way to discover the peninsula is to rent a car and follow the costal road 132. There are many points of interest in Gaspé, but if you’re only staying a few days there, you should at least visit these 3 must-see places.

1) Make your 1st stop in Percé (literally “Pierced” in French). Right in front of the village, you will discover its famous huge pierced rock, standing in the Saint-Lawrence river and only connected to the mainland at low tide.

From Percé, you can also access the Bonaventure Island, hosting the world’s largest Northern Gannets colony. And how about doing an organized boat trip around the island to admire those magnificent birds?

2) Your 2nd stop will be Forillon National Park, at the Eastern end of Gaspé peninsula.

Hike and explore the region’s magnificent cliffs overlooking the sea and beautiful preserved forests. For example,you should take a stroll on the “Les Graves” trail, offering beautiful views of the ocean and the forest.

The park is a great place to observe an amazing wildlife , as thousands of sea birds and seals colonies are living here. You can also go whale watching, kayaking or fishing.

3) Your last stop should be The Gaspésie National Park. It’s truly an hiker’s paradise, with its more than 20 summits over 1000-meter high. If you’re lucky, you might encounter some moose, as the park hosts the only colony south of the Saint-Lawrence river.

As in Forillon National Park, you can also go canoeing, kayaking or fishing in one of the park’s 7 lakes and 3 rivers.

If you have enough time to spend several days in Gaspésie National Park, and if you’re an hiking lover, you should do the Appalachian Trail, a 100-km long marked trail crossing the park.

You can opt for a 4 days guided tour including the accommodation (mostly in shelters), the meals, and the luggage transfer from one shelter to another.

The Saguenay Fjord is another place you must visit during your holidays in Quebec.

With its more than 400-meter high cliffs , this fjord offers beautiful viewpoints over the glacier valley and the Saguenay river.

There are many great ways to discover the Saguenay Fjord:

• On foot: walk on the marked trails of the Saguenay Fjord National Park. The 7-km long Statue Trail is the best if you want to admire splendid views from the summit.
• Rent a sea kayak to be amazed by the Fjord’s huge cliffs.
• Do a boat tour with an audio guide to learn more about the Fjord’s History and legends.

You should also visit the 2 villages of L’anse-Saint-Jean and Saint-Rose-du-Nord, members of the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages of Quebec.

Located in the heart of the Saguenay Fjord, these 2 villages are offering magnificent panoramas.

If you’re visiting Quebec during spring, you definitely have to discover the Sugar Shacks.

It’s clearly among the most popular things to do in Quebec!

Every year, both locals and tourists are coming to the province’s many sugar shacks to celebrate the sugar time. At this time of the year, maple water starts flowing from the maple trees. Once boiled, it can be used to produce many typical Canadian products, such as maple syrup or maple butter.

The Sugar Shacks are usually located in the countryside, offering a charming scenery. There are many activities you can enjoy (sleigh rides, maple syrup production, traditional dance), but most people are coming there to eat a typical lunch.

Most of your meal will consist of maple syrup : maple glazed ham , potatoes,  maple and bacon baked beans, sausages, eggs in syrup, and the famous “Oreilles de crisses” , deep-fried smoked pork jowls. And for desert, of course, maple candies and the renowned Maple Taffy: when you pour hot maple syrup directly into the snow, it becomes easy to wrap around a stick and makes a lollipop. A bit sticky but delicious!

I only have one advice: avoid too tight pants! 😋

La Mauricie National Park is located between Montreal and Quebec City, in the heart of the Laurentides mountains.

In this 536 km² park, you will discover more than 150 lakes, many rivers and huge waterfalls.

Fishing, biking, rafting, camping and of course hiking: there are many great activities to do in La Mauricie! You can also observe the amazing wildlife, as the park is full of moose, beavers and raccoons.

A 63-km long  panoramic road crosses the park, starting from Saint-Mathieu-du-Parc or Saint-Jean-des-Piles.

Take some time during your road-trip to admire the beautiful panoramas. You should especially stop at the “Belvedere du Passage” to enjoy a magnificent view of Wapizagonke Lake.

The most famous excursion goes to the Waber falls. To get there, you will have to paddle on a raft for 4 kilometers, then walk for 4 other kilometers. And of course, you will have to go back to your starting point!  As it takes a full day, don’t forget your picnic!

Have you ever tried the Poutine? I really enjoyed this iconic dish from Quebec, but I can tell that it leaves no one indifferent: you either love it or hate it!

If you want to make a typical Poutine, all you will need french fries, brown gravy and cheese curds.

Once you’ve got these 3 ingredients, you can create many variations: change the sauce, the cheese, or add some meat, onions, mushrooms or even sausages!

There are more than 100 different recipes in some restaurants, but not all equal. Montreal’s most famous restaurant for its Poutine is “La Banquise”, open 24/7.

Be prepared to queue up at any time of the day. You should try “La duleton”: it’s a great classical Poutine with minced meat and onions, and it was clearly delicious!

If you want to have a look at the many Poutine variations, you can check “La Banquise” menu on their official website.

Poutine is clearly Quebec’s most famous dish. Every year, the “Poutine Week” is even organized, and more than 50 restaurants are competing and making a special Poutine just for this event. At the end of the week, the jury and consumers are electing their favorite ones in several categories.

The Omega Park is located South West of the Quebec province , about 100 kilometers away from Montreal.

In this wildlife park, you will discover many wild animals in their natural habitat. You can drive through the park for around 10 kilometers and observe wolves, black bears, moose or beavers.

There is also a marked walking trail, a picnic area and a shop. Don’t forget to buy carrots to feed some of the animals!

As the Omega Park is pretty big, you should spend at least half a day there. It’s clearly a great activity if you’re travelling to Quebec with children!

You can also rent an accommodation for the night , in the heart of the park. You will have the choice between tepees, tents, log cabins or even houses on stilts . A tepee for 2 costs around 100$ per night.

There are many ski resorts in Quebec, but if you want to enjoy magnificent panoramas, you should go to Mont-Sainte-Anne, located 30 minutes away from Quebec City. From the summit, you will enjoy breathtaking views of the Saint-Lawrence river.

There, you can go downhill skiing (for 77$ per day), cross-country skiing (for 29$ per day) or snowshoeing (for 12$ per day)

If you want to practice another typical activity during your holidays in Quebec, you should definitely go ice skating.

Nearly every neighborhood has its own outdoor (and free) skating rink! There, children can practice in complete safety, and adults can play Canada’s most popular sport: ice hockey.

If you’re not a complete beginner, how about ice skating in a magnificent place? You should go to the Lost Forest, in Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel , around a 1h45 drive from Montreal.

There, you can go ice skating through the forest, on a 12-km long trail . It’s truly magical!

Quebec is the perfect destination for canoeing, as the region offers hundreds of lakes and rivers.

Learning to canoe can take some time and is a real challenge. But once you’ve mastered it, there are many beautiful rivers to go canoeing in Quebec.

• The Bonaventure River, often considered as Quebec’s most beautiful river. You will be amazed by its emerald and transparent waters.
• The La Diable and l’Assomption rivers, in Mont-Tremblant National Park.
• The river in Jacques-Cartier National Park
• The Malbaie river in its National Park.
• The Ashuapmushuan river, for experts only!

In Quebec, you can also c ombine canoeing and camping: all day long, you will go down Quebec’s majestic rivers, and stop for the night on the shore. There, everything is prepared for camping, with a fire hole and toilets.

The Magdalen Islands is an archipelago of 12 islands (only 7 of which are inhabited), located in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.

There, you will enjoy magnificent landscapes with large sand beaches, dunes and high cliffs overlooking the ocean.

If you want to get there, you will have 2 options:

• By plane: from Montreal, it takes 2 hours to reach the Magdalen Islands
• By ferry: it takes 5 hours to go from Souris (on Prince Edward Island, accessible by car) to the Magdalen Islands

Every summer, many Quebecers are coming there to relax and enjoy the islands’ beautiful beaches. The islands’ climate is ideal for swimming (at least for Quebecers!), as the water can reach 20°C! With its strong winds, the region is also a famous spot for windsurf and kitesurf.

Moreover, the Magdalen Islands are a perfect place for hiking lovers. If you’re going to the Cap aux Meules island, you should do the Barachois trail. There, you can observe many birds.

Anticosti Island is Quebec’s largest natural Island. It is located in Gaspé Peninsula, in front of the towns of Gaspé and Percé.

It’s definitely the perfect place if you want to relax for a few days, discover breathtaking landscapes and observe an amazing wildlife. In Anticosti, you will probably see many deers , as it’s the island’s iconic animal.

The best places to visit in Anticosti are:

• The Port-Menier eco-museum, if you want to discover the island’s History.
• The 76-meter high Vaureal waterfall  and canyon
• The Kalamazoo falls
• The Brick river canyon and its many trouts.
• The Jupiter river, renowned for its salmons
• Patate Cave (literally “Potato Cave”), one of Quebec’s largest natural caves

The cheapest way to go to Anticosti is to take the ferry in Havre-Saint-Pierre. It takes around 5 hours, and costs 60$. You should also rent a car to get around the island.

If you want to enjoy a typical Quebec tradition, then you should definitely go brunching during the weekend. It was one of my favorite things to do when I lived in Montreal!

Many restaurants are offering brunches in Quebec. The typical Canadian brunch consists of various sorts of eggs, bacon, baked beans, potatoes, coffee, tea and orange juice.

In addition to these typical dishes, many restaurants are also serving fresh fruits, smoothies, pancakes, crêpes, sausages or bagels,… That’s why you choose a restaurant rather than another!

It’s impossible to list the best places to brunch in Quebec, as it’s really subjective and depends on what you like most.

Every person in Quebec would have a different answer! I can only tell that I’ve tried many different brunchs in Quebec and I’ve never been disappointed.

Gillette Castle State Park

Founded in 1925, this popular candy company now produces around five billion sweet treats each year in partnership with its headquarters location in Traun, Austria. Inside you'll learn about the candy's colorful history, observe a product packaging line and browse an extensive collection of themed PEZ dispensers (including the world's largest PEZ dispenser). Despite its age, visitors rave about how clean the park is, as well as its continued investments in updated rides and amenities, like the Venus Vortex water slide, a twirling tube that seats up to four passengers and overlooks the lake. Other popular rides include the Boulder Dash, a wooden "mountain coaster" that zips through the wilderness and the Wildcat, New England's oldest roller coaster, built in 1927.

Beardsley Park is the site of Connecticut's only zoo, the Beardsley Zoo, which is home to 300 animals as well as a historic carousel and a botanical greenhouse. Connecticut Science Center

This 154,000-square-foot facility offers a full day's worth of discovery and hands-on experience for curious folks of all ages with a 3-D theater and 165 exhibits to explore across six floors, including a sports lab, space galaxy simulator and medical experiments designed to make you think. Guests say that young kids especially love the water play area and the butterfly room, while parents enjoy the rooftop patio offering views of the Connecticut River. After looking at the river, head back inside to take a closer look at its ecosystem at the River of Life exhibit, featuring a virtual tour of the entire 400-mile waterway.

Submarine Force Library & Museum

The Submarine Force Library and Museum is the only submarine museum managed by the Navy History and Heritage command division of the U.S. Navy. The famous watercraft was constructed in the early 1950s just a few miles down the Thames River from the museum, making it a hometown favorite attraction.

Owned and operated by the National Trust of Historic Preservation, the Glass House was constructed in 1949 by architect Phillip Johnson to function as his primary home. Aptly named, the modest yet complex home was designed with walls made entirely of glass to showcase the site's beautiful surroundings.

Guided tours are offered that take visitors beyond the main home into the artist's studio and outbuildings, including a guest house and several art galleries displaying Johnson's modernist work and collections (all tours originate from the visitor's center). Tickets are required for admission to the Glass House. Children are allowed to take the tour but must be ages 10 or older. Putnam Memorial State Park

In the midst of the American Revolutionary War, the troops of General Israel Putnam's Continental Army spent the winter of 1779 camping on this site, which is now the oldest state park in Connecticut. Admission to the park and its facilities are free of charge. The indoor-outdoor facility, though on the small side, boasts several unique features, including the only Stellar sea lion care facility and largest beluga whale pod in the continental United States. Ski at Mohawk Mountain

This ski resort comprises 350 acres of scenic state forest land, 26 ski trails for a variety of skill levels and eight chair lifts. It is the largest ski area in the state, and was the first ski area to implement the use of mechanical snowmaking in 1948, a technology that is now widely used at ski resorts around the world. Non-skiers can go snow tubing or relax with a hot beverage in the main lodge located at the base. A second lodge is situated mid-mountain, featuring a spacious patio, massive stone fireplace and full-service restaurant for skiers to enjoy lunch or après snacks. You might also recognize the 172-foot long wooden bridge − which has been transporting Route 128 traffic across the Houstantic River since 1864 − from the opening scenes of the 1967 movie "Valley of the Dolls." As one of the few of its kind remaining in the state, the structure is now enlisted on the National Register of Historic Places to ensure its continued preservation.

14 things you can do only in Beijing

It's incredible to think that a little over a century ago, Beijing was a kind of low-rise walled fortress, its nine humongous gates locked shut every night. 

Today, it's the very model of a modern megacity, hurtling toward a brave new future – though with one foot planted in the past. To put it simply, Beijing does things its own way: it's a city of 9 million gig-economy e-bikes and about as many tech workers, of historic hutong lanes overhung with facial-recognition cameras, of endlessly inventive ways to get your foodie fix.

Things move forward so quickly in China's capital, so it's almost futile trying to pin down exactly what the city is. What is Beijing known for? It's better to go there and figure it out for yourself.  Here's our guide to the most memorable, unusual things to do in Beijing.

1. Get lost in Beijing's hutong alleyways

Beijing's highly wander-able matrix of residential lanes has been shrinking for decades, but despite the demolitions, it's still possible to lose yourself in neighborhoods that time (almost) forgot, where old folks play xiangqi (Chinese chess), walk their songbirds and haggle over a few jin of persimmons from a handcart seller.

Head to Xisi to stroll the alleyways, hear  Beijinghua (the local dialect) and marvel at the majestic White Dagoba Temple rising up over tapering tiled rooftops. After dark, a stroll through hutong streets is one of the best things to do at night in Beijing.

2. Eat jianbing for breakfast (every single day)

Take one giant crepe-style pancake, crack an egg or two on top, lather on some furu (fermented bean curd) and chili sauce, sprinkle with cilantro and scallions, fold around a shatteringly crisp sheet of fried dough… and eat! Jianbing is a Beijing street snack you can get all over the city for around a dollar – and it's so tasty that it's now trending as far away as London and New York.

Full disclosure: the dish actually originates in the neighboring city of Tianjin , where locals use chewy crullers called youtiao  instead of the crispy dough. Tianjin's version may be slightly more authentic, but Beijing's is better.

3. Go on a "wild" Great Wall hike

Seeing the Great Wall in its naturally eroded state, snaking away over the ridgelines of mountains with trees erupting from buckled watchtowers, is a sight more fantastical than anything the Game of Thrones art department could dream up.

It takes a bit of planning to skip the cable-car stretches rebuilt for tourists (and avoid the security guards posted at popular wild wall-hiking spots near the city), so it's a good idea to sign up for a day hike with Beijing Hikers . Let them handle the details so you can concentrate on the photographs.

4. Delve deeper into the Forbidden City

Most visitors to Beijing's UNESCO-listed centerpiece focus their energies on the Three Great Halls and parade grounds that comprise the outer court, and t hey are indeed awe-inspiring.

Yet it's by venturing into the tightly woven labyrinth of rooms and corridors to the north that you'll dig up the most remarkable sights. Don't miss the Palace of Prolonging Happiness , an unfinished, Western-style building of marble, cast-iron and glass designed to be a kind of walk-in aquarium; or the Belvedere of Pleasant Sounds, an elaborate three-story opera house with trap doors, tunnels and pulleys for special effects.

5. Go on a historical run

Keeping fit, exploring the city and learning about old Peking at the same time: what more could you want? The founder of a local tour company Beijing Postcards has combined his twin passions of Beijing history and jogging into a series of themed runs, clocking in at about 10km each, that stitch together hutong alleyways, leafy canal paths and little-visited parks.

Planning tip: You don't need to be super fit, as the run stops every few minutes for a brief intro to a particular sight or topic and finishes up at the company's hutong HQ for drinks and snacks.

6. Explore China's most fantastical garden

Meaning "Garden of Preserving Harmony" but known in English as the Summer Palace , Yiheyuan served as a private royal playground on a truly epic scale.

Kunming Lake, at its heart is over 2 kilometers across, while Longevity Hill, raised from earth dug out to expand the lake, climbs 60m (197ft) over the water and is crowned with majestic halls, towers and pavilions. All this opulence was created for just one person: the Empress Dowager Cixi, who siphoned off funds earmarked for a new Chinese navy to design her dream retirement home. 

7. Gorge on the world's best Peking duck

Molecular gastronomy has nothing on proper kaoya (roast duck), and the dish Beijing gave the world tastes better in the capital than anywhere else.

T he distinguished birds served at Sìjì Mínfú  take days to prepare:  The ducks are dried, inflated with compressed air to separate the meat from the skin, basted in molasses, then roasted in open-fronted ovens over crackling fruitwood. Even the precise method of carving takes years to master and is an essential part of the culinary theater that's an exciting accompaniment to one of the world's great dishes. 

8. See the sunrise at Tian'anmen Square

Every day as dawn breaks, a People's Liberation Army honor guard marches out from under the giant portrait of Mao Zedong to raise the five-star Red Flag over Tiananmen Square . It's an iconic spectacle, full of pomp and swagger. (Supposedly, the immaculately attired soldiers are drilled to march at precisely 108 paces per minute.)

Planning tip: Don't worry if you're not an early riser; the same ceremony happens in reverse at sunset. 

9. Climb Beijing's twin towers

The magnificent Drum and Bell Towers are inseparable icons of Beijing. Until a century or so ago they were the city's official timekeepers, sounding out curfews and coordinating the patrols of the night watch. These days, you can climb both to see old-world views, hear an hourly drumming performance and gawp at China's largest bell.

But the monuments are actually at their most inspiring when seen peeking over rooftops as you wander the surrounding hutong alleyways of Gulou (literally "drum tower"). Beijing's hippest neighborhood, it's home to third-wave cafes, quirky boutiques and speakeasy-style cocktail bars.

10. Dig for treasures at Panjiayuan Market

Even knowing that pretty much every antique at this huge market is fake, Panjiayuan still offers an unforgettable shopping experience. In addition to ersatz Ming vases "aged" with fake dust and artificially tarnished Buddha statues, you can find replica Qing furniture, traditional handicrafts, calligraphy brushes, ink stones and more among the thousands of dealers. Stick to the last century, and you might dig up genuine Mao busts, Little Red Books, faded cigarette posters and the like.

Planning tip: On weekends, Panjiayuan starts trading well before dawn, which is when the best of the loot gets snapped up.

11. Drop a line to the gods at the Temple of Heaven

Less a place of worship than a divine conduit to the cosmos, the Temple of Heaven used to be reserved for the emperor alone, who twice a year would set forth with great fanfare from the Forbidden City in an entourage that included horse chariots, elephants and a gigantic sedan chair. After arriving at the open-air Round Altar, he would perform esoteric rites and ceremonies in the hope of summoning divine blessing for his continued rule.

Every detail of the Temple of Heaven's architecture is cosmologically significant, making it a fascinating place to ponder millennia of Chinese thought. 

12. Meet China's biggest dragon-tortoise

You'll see bixi (dragons with tortoise shells) at temples all over Beijing, holding up stone stelae upon which are inscribed the virtuous deeds of emperors of old. But the alpha bixi resides at the Ming Tombs, the final resting place of 13 emperors in a secluded valley outside Beijing. Weighing in at 50 tons, this stone giant carries a stele over 6m (20ft) tall and guards the Spirit Way leading to the tombs, an astonishing funerary avenue lined by a dozen pairs of carved animals, mythical beasts and officials. 

13. Ride a bullet train to the Great Wall

At the turn of the 20th century, travelers in Beijing went to the Great Wall by mule litter, a kind of sedan chair lashed between two donkeys. The reward for this grueling, two-day trek was Badaling , an astounding sprawl of brick battlements and watchtowers in the Jundu Mountains.

Since 2020, the bullet train makes the same trip in just over 20 minutes, stopping at the world's deepest underground station directly beneath Badaling, which has now morphed into a kind of Great Wall resort with its own Starbucks and KFC. Times have changed.

14. Dine in an imperial deep freeze

Royal Icehouse is a hard-to-find hutong restaurant near the Forbidden City with an icy secret in its basement: a royal refrigerator. The arched stone cellars were used to keep the emperor's victuals cool in summer, helped in the task by giant blocks of ice cut from the adjacent lake in Beihai Park .

It's a quirky setting for classic Peking duck and Shandong-style sweetmeats, like sugared crab apples, best washed down with a tot or two of the in-house own rice wine and medicinal liquor. (You'll spot it brewing in pig bladders and clay jars along the walls.)

What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality . 

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT. 

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT. 

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

The below table by NASA shows when the eclipse will start, peak and end in 13 cities along the eclipse's path.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017. 

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT. 

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET. 

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com . 

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.

The Bund, “a gallery of international architectures”, is the landmark of Shanghai. It is always the best place to view Shanghai. Take a stroll along the embankment of the Huangpu River, and you’ll get various architectural styles from Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque to Classicism and the Renaissance in your camera. No. 2: Oriental Pearl TV Tower

Standing at the end of the Huangpu River, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower soars 468 meters, setting the character of the new urban area as well as its cityscape. An all-around panorama view of Shanghai from the tallest TV tower in Asia and the third tallest in the world can be amazing, walking on the glass bottom and feeling your adrenaline pumps is also cool. It is worthy to visit in the late afternoon that you could see the sunset and the city come alive with lights.

No. 9: Huangpu River

The Huangpu River, known as the Mother River of Shanghai as well as the largest river in Shanghai, is a 113-kilometer long river flowing through Shanghai which is the last tributary of Yangtze River ends in the East China Sea. Puxi (West Bank) and Pudong (East Bank) are bounded by it, forming the world-famous Bund, Lujiazui financial zone, and other important landmarks. No. 17: City God Temple

City God Temple of Shanghai, an important Taoist temple, also known as Chenghuang Temple or Cheng Huang Miao is located in the most prosperous and prestigious Yu Garden scenic area. It was built in the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty (1403 - 1424). It has a history of nearly six hundred years and witnessed the rise and fall, the peace and war of Shanghai. The main building includes the front square, the main hall, the Yuan Chen hall, the God of wealth hall, the Ci Hang Hall, the city god hall, and the goddess hall. It was destroyed during the war and closed in 1966, and rebuilt and reopened in 1994.

The Bund sightseeing tunnel is located in the Pudong New Area between Oriental Pearl TV Tower and the Nanjing East Road. It is a pioneering work in the history of tunnel construction. It is the first cross-river pedestrian tunnel in China, with a total length of 646.70 meters, with a total construction area of nearly 17500 square meters. With the ocean-themed lighting and shadow, it is like a dreamland. No. 22: Jing'an Temple

Jing'an Temple is located in the prosperous Jing'an district, with convenient transportation. The architectural style of the temple is integrated with the Tibetan temple. The silver Buddha in the main hall weighs 15 tons. Guanyin hall is set in the East Chamber on the right side of the first floor. The Guanying Buddha inside is 6.2 meters high. On the left side of the west chamber is the hall of Sakyamuni, which houses the 3.87-meter-high Sakyamuni Jade Buddha. This jade Buddha is much larger than the Jade Buddha in Jade Buddha Temple. The roof of Jing'an Temple is covered with copper tiles, and the top of the pagoda behind the temple is painted in gold. Looking afar, the whole temple is shining under the sun.

Longhua Temple is the oldest and largest ancient temple in Shanghai with a history of more than 1700 years. From south to north, along the central axis of Longhua temple is Maitreya hall, Tianwang Hall, Daxiong Hall, Sansheng hall, and Sutra library. The Daxiong hall is very solemn. In front of it, there are three golden statues of Buddhas, Tathagata, Manjusri, and Puxian. On the back, there are exquisite statues of Guanyin. On both sides of the hall, there are carved sixteen Arhats. There are bell and drum towers on the East and west sides of the temple.

China Arts Museum used to be the National Pavilion of China in the Shanghai World Expo. The multimedia version of Qingming Riverside is the treasure of the China Arts Museum, there are many works of modern artists on display here. The exhibition hall of the art palace is mainly located on the 0-m, 5-m, 33-m, 41-m, and 49-m floors. You can take the elevator to go up and down the stairs. Shanghai Natural History Museum is one of the largest natural history museums in China, located in Jing'an District. In the museum, the skeleton of a 26-meter long Zhongjiamamen River dinosaur is the most eye-catching. It is the largest dinosaur in Asia with the longest neck in the world. The new museum has five floors, two on the ground and three underground. It usually starts from the second floor above the ground and goes down in turn. M50 is the abbreviation of No. 50 Moganshan Road. It is located in the peninsula area on the South Bank of Suzhou River. It is a creative park reconstructed from the original textile factory. You can see the artworks of abstract, realistic, watercolor, oil painting, and so on. Qibao ancient town was built in the Northern Song Dynasty. It is only 5 kilometers away from the downtown area of Shanghai. It can be reached directly by metro line 9.
