Inside Supercell's Finnish Headquarters, Where It Makes Millions Of Dollars Per Day
Finnish gaming company Supercell has been creating a lot of hype lately.
It is a $3 billion company largely in part to the success of its games Hay Day and Clash of Clans .
Clash of Clans and Hay Day are both among the top-ten grossing apps in the iTunes Store, according to AppData. Supercell generates over $2.4 million per day in revenue, on average, according to data released earlier this year.
Business Insider recently had the chance to visit Supercell in Helsinki.
Note: Supercell would not allow us to take photos of its employees, nor their screens.
Disclosure: Finnish funding agency Tekes and Finnfacts, a non-profit media service organization in Finland, paid for my trip to Helsinki to explore the startup scene.
Supercell has space at Itämerenkatu 11 in Helsinki, Finland.
Here's the view from the inside. Only a couple of startups currently occupy the building. Another notable startup that resides here is Jolla, a smartphone company that spun out of Nokia.
When you first walk inside Supercell, you'll see an interactive screen that displays real-time user logins.
It breaks it down by players online, users logged in to Hay Day, Clash of Clans, and both.
You'll also notice that there are a lot of shoes on the floor.
A LOT. Supercell wants its office to feel like home, so it requires its employees to take their outdoor shoes off. That means a lot of people are walking around in their socks.
Supercell has fun little directions plastered on the wall to help employees navigate.
The "Super" is to the left.
And the "Cell" is to the right.
Supercell employees leave little notes for each other and make art on the blackboard.
Even the men's room features some artwork.
But what's a startup office without caffeine?
It features plenty of coffee and tea options.
As well as some Supercell-branded mugs.
They clearly seem to be going to great use.
There's also plenty of fruit and vegetables to keep Supercell employees satiated.
Near the kitchen, Supercell has a wall of some of its feedback from users.
It has plenty of board games to keep its employees's creative juices flowing. Supercell even has game board nights to help employees get to know each other better.
Here's another wall of customer feedback and real-time user logins.
Here's the iconic Barbarian, one of the troops in Clash of Clans. The barbarian helps you in battle.
Here we see the P.E.K.K.A. He's one of the most powerful troops in Clash of Clans.
Supercell employees love Finland because, among other reasons,"life is easy" and it's home to the birthplace Santa Claus.
Again, we were not able to take photos of screens nor employees, but you can see see a hint of the workspace to the left.

Supercell’s Helsinki HQ features state-of-the-art technology with open workspaces
The Helsinki HQ of Supercell is mostly built with woods and the architects were inspired by the forest-centric geography of Finland. Except for the concrete foundations and decorative units in the HQ, the building features wooden constructions all around.
A web of networking cables covering a distance of 450km runs through the HQ. one of the best places for employees to hang out is the PEKKA cafe where they can take a quick break and grab pastries and smoothies.
The cafe is surrounded by meeting rooms that are used for visiting partners and business associates. Each meeting room is equipped with video conferencing tech to ensure good connectivity during meetings. The meeting rooms are themed out of games created by the studio which include Hay Day , Clash of Clans, Boom Beach , and Brawl Stars. The entire HQ features open and spacious workspaces which help in maintaining a healthy ecosystem among employees.
Supercell employees find the work culture to be collaborative, thoughtful and empowering
Some of the employees shared their thoughts on working at Supercell . James, a designer in the Clash Royale developers team said that everyone is very passionate about the work they are doing. James also said that curiosity is the key element behind great game design.
A game lead in Clash Royale said that she finds the whole work culture collaborative, thoughtful, and empowering. These are all the details shown by Supercell in part 1 of the virtual tour.
The studio will continue this virtual tour on another video which will be released later. Interested players can follow the game’s social media channels for the next part of the Supercell HQ Tour.

Supercell headquarters – flagship for complex solid wood construction

main structural and element design of wood components and electrical, telecommunication and safety engineering
8-storey office complex made of LVL plywood elements; electric and telecommunication cabling through the suspension floor; wireless lighting control system; 48 electric car charging stations
Gross 13,300 m2
The new headquarters of the game development company Supercell is part of the unique Wood City block in the Jätkäsaari district of Helsinki. SRV, Stora Enso and Sweco have developed new solid wood structures for this project. Furthermore, the use of the facility is supported with secured building services.
In addition to the new Supercell headquarters, the EUR 100 million Wood City block, due to be finished in 2021, consists of two wooden residential buildings, parking facilities and a hotel. The wooden office complex developed jointly by SRV, Stora Enso and Sweco has generated a lot of interest in the field.
“It is a joint effort towards a new type of construction and an example of how things can be done differently,” explains Maija Tiainen , project manager of wooden structure design at Sweco. The architectural designs of Wood City are secret, but it should come as no surprise that the Supercell headquarters is far from your average office. “The building will include a variety of team working spaces and functionalities, and it could be compared to a shopping centre, for example!”
This is the largest wood construction project SRV has ever developed. “The significance of the office complex is increased by its future user and its location as a landmark around the entrance of Jätkäsaari,” emphasises Development Director and Project Manager Antti Aaltonen from SRV.
From the start, the goal of the project was to create a new flagship for wood construction. According to Business Development Manager Antto Kauhanen from Stora Enso Wood Products, the benefits of wood are emphasised in densely built environments like Jätkäsaari. “A large number of lightweight but strong wood elements can be transported at once, reducing transport, costs and emissions. The use of wood has cut construction emissions by half.”
Co-developed innovative wood construction
The greatest structural engineering challenges in this project were the unique architectural and structural-engineering characteristics of the building. In the end, the 8-storey office building was built using pillar beam elements of LVL plywood stiffened with concrete shafts and adaptable bolting. A completely new LVL production line was established at Stora Enso’s factory in Varkaus.
“Initially we had no standardised design values to work with, and structural designers had to make a lot of assumptions,” says Kauhanen. As the design progressed, the functionality of the structure system was verified with standardised design values. “Our professionals responded to the changes quickly, and Sweco’s structural designers had a central role in developing the office complex.”
An exceptional amount of modifications were required. ”Our job was to coordinate the client’s wishes with the site schedules, which was not a simple task. Communication was of the utmost importance,” Tiainen says. “We actively guided the operation with the help of Last Planner, for instance.”
Building services supporting Supercell’s ambitious work environment
Supercell’s objective was to create the best work environment in the world. The distribution of power to the offices is secured by two transformers, and an external reserve power access point was connected to the server room. “Two data-transmission cable routes lead to the building. The fibre-optic cables inside the building were also installed through two routes. In other words, at least one route is always in use,” explains Jyrki Kokko , Sweco’s Project Director of Electrical, Telecommunication and Safety Engineering.
The high information transport capacity, extensive audio-visual systems and flexible lighting solutions meant that the number of cables in the complex would be very high. PoE power transfer requirements were also taken into account in the building’s IT cabling. “Devices connected to LAN can also be powered through the IT cables, in which case there is no need for separate power supplies,” says Kokko.
The client wanted the developers to prioritise employees’ well-being and technical adaptability in the technological solutions. Most of the office cabling is installed underneath a suspension floor to ensure workstation flexibility. This was also an architecturally sound solution. “There are no socket poles or hanging connection leads,” Kokko adds. Even the lighting control system is wireless. “Light switches can be attached directly to glass walls, for example.”
The car park has 48 electric car charging stations and even more stations can be installed later thanks to the handy rail power supply system. “We also designed the video monitoring and access control systems and the cable routes for the audio-visual systems,” says Kokko. “Furthermore, we designed a fire detection system equipped with smoke detectors alongside a sprinkler system, which is mandatory in tall wooden buildings.”

CEO of Finland’s Supercell believes in work-life balance and an international workforce
Mobile game developer Supercell, headquartered in Helsinki, is known for its emphasis on employee wellbeing. Cofounder and CEO Ilkka Paananen shares his ideas about the work environments of the future.
A balanced workplace: Supercell cofounder Ilkka Paananen sits in front of a statue of a barbarian character from the game Clash of Clans.
Every month, 250 million people around the world play Supercell’s games: Hay Day, Clash of Clans, Boom Beach, Clash Royale and Brawl Stars.
Founded in 2010, Supercell maintains offices in Helsinki, San Francisco, Seoul and Shanghai. The company is thoroughly international and multicultural, with more than 45 nationalities among its more than 400 employees.
“We want to create global games for diverse players,” says CEO Ilkka Paananen. “Multiculturalism and diversity are part of everything we do. Interacting with colleagues from different backgrounds is important business-wise, but it also enriches our lives and makes our work more interesting. We have seen that diversity makes our teams better. Future workplaces will be fundamentally international.”
Supercell believes in independent teams that take responsibility for their work. The company slogan is, “The best teams make the best games.”
Growing the team

“We want our teams to be the best in the world,” says Paananen. “We start with two to three people who complement each other perfectly, and continue growing the team from there.
“Supercell was founded on the principle that every team works as a cell inside the company. This means that we trust the team and the people in it to make their own decisions, organise their own work and take responsibility for creating a game that they believe in. I do not want to tell people how to do their work. Trust is the fundamental value that keeps Supercell together.”
Paananen thinks that employees will be even more independent in the future.
“There will be less micromanagement, and employees will take even more responsibility for their work,” he says. “With various remote working tools, we are not always in our offices anymore, and this requires trust. Our teams can choose for themselves if they work at the office or not. We want the best people to work for us, and sometimes it can mean that they work remotely from different parts of the world. In the years to come, we will definitely get more technical tools to help us do this.”
Remember to take a break

Paananen expects to see many individuals with international networks working together in the future.
“Societies should be more supportive of the different ways of working,” he says. “Some people like freelancing and others like having stable employment. Diversity is key here as well. All work should be valued and properly paid, but we should not limit its structures too much.”
Another important value at Supercell is supporting work-life balance.
“We make sure everyone takes their holidays and remembers to look after themselves,” says Paananen. “We discuss coping at work and the importance of private life and work-life balance. You do not build good games if you burn yourself out. With remote working, it is very easy to slip into working from morning until evening. As a CEO, I take my full month’s summer holiday and go home in the evenings. I know sometimes creating games is so much fun it’s hard to stop, but you have to take a break.” He smiles.

Supercell Headquarters lighting Helsinki
Supercell headquarters lighting.
The lighting at Supercell’s new eight-story headquarters is a combination of timeless light architecture and changing dynamics. The light creates a quiet atmosphere that is enlivened by fictional artistic light works. The starting point for the design has been Supercell’s values and people’s wishes and needs.

The new eight-story headquarters of the global mobile gaming company Supercell is located in Jätkäsaari, Helsinki, and is part of the Woodcity block. The starting point for all the design has been the everyday life and ideology of Supercell’s practice. The success of all solutions is reflected in job satisfaction. The atmosphere of the facilities is moderate and soothing. The game is the core, the rest has to support it.
In office spaces , light introduces the surfaces indirectly. The light is tuned small and dimmed; quiet. In the morning it is cooler and more intense. As the evening darkens, the mood changes; the light is warm and the pilasters on the exterior walls illuminated throughout may resemble a campfire, creating a warm atmosphere. In contrast, the adjoining windows open onto the city of Helsinki in the evening.
The lobby represents a unique wooden architecture that is spectacularly highlighted. During the day, the general light is brighter, when it gets dark outside the general light dims and the wooden architecture also emerges as part of the street scene. Highlighted game characters communicate about the company. The warm wooden architecture and cool concrete frame create a sensual combination.
The Atrium opens from the café floor, with a staircase leading to the offices and the top restaurant and auditorium floor. The fictional expression of light in the Atrium is like the heart and soul of Supercell. Abstractionally changing tones and slow motion give way to imagination and illustration. Unnoticed, light changes with the seasons and the day, always looking different.
Hexagon lighting on the top floor represents the basic ideology of the company’s operations; cells. The moving and living light of the Hexagon reflects the birth, reunion, and separation, beginning, and end of cells. It changes according to daylight and algorithmically indicates the amount and direction of the wind. It can be programmed for events and for use with the AV-entirety. Basic lighting solution is moderate spot lighting.
In the cityscape , Hexagon communicates dynamism and communicates the existence of a gaming company without the need to advertise. The façade of the building is also lightly lit, but in the main part of the street view, a moving and transforming Hexagon can be seen from the windows on the top floor.
The flexible basic lighting solution is based on the same technology in all floors. Magnetic dazzle-protected LED spotlights are easy to move and feature zoom optics. Traditional general lighting is only available in conference rooms and team and other office spaces. Other illuminated facilities include a gym, kindergarten, sauna, spa, roof park, roof terrace and garage. When you reach the rooms, the lights come on and can be easily adjusted with the wall button. The color temperature can be changed manually from the basic setting; cool in daylight and warm in the dark. When you leave the rooms, you will be left in the blue waiting light in the conference rooms.
Supercell headquarters is an example of boldly questioning the traditions and trends of lighting architecture. Light is part of the architecture and before that it is part of the values and lives of the users of the spaces. The lighting solution provides elements that the end-user can endlessly modify and develop.
