Winter, for many, is a cold and dreary time of year, meant for hiding under one’s kotatsu and waiting patiently for spring. But if you’re able to crawl out from under the warmth of a heated blanket and head outdoors, you may find that it’s not so bad after all.

Put on a pair of snowshoes and venture out to vast, snow-covered fields and forests of frost-nipped trees. See magical scenery that only winter can provide, from walls of ice pillars and burly snow monsters to glittering clouds of diamond dust.

Here are some of Nagano’s most popular snowshoeing destinations.

Snowshoeing in Togakushi

nagano winter tour

The forested highland of Togakushi sits above Nagano City at an altitude of 1,200 meters high. It is most famously known for the Togakushi Okusha Shrine, whose trail is flanked by rows of breathtaking 400-year-old cedar trees.

While the shrine is closed during winter, visitors can still walk along the trail and freely through the forest, discovering smaller shrines, statues and monuments along the way. You may also run into some of Togakushi’s year-round residents, such as woodpeckers, rabbits or foxes.

Several shops offer snowshoe rentals, and some outdoor activity centers run their own one-day tours here.

Snowshoeing in Kamikochi

This national park at the base of the Japanese Alps is known for its incredible mountain scenery and pristine nature. During winter, the entire basin is covered in a blanket of snow and trees are wrapped in a delicate layer of frost.

The trek to Kamikochi in winter is no simple feat: you have to walk nearly two kilometers through the Kama Tunnel to reach the edge of the basin. But if you do make the trek, you can enjoy snowshoeing along the clear Azusa River and have Kamikochi’s picturesque views all to yourself.

While it is possible to go to Kamikochi on your own, there are no facilities open here during winter and access is quite difficult. Guesthouse Raicho , located in nearby Norikura Kogen, offers group and private snowshoe tours here.

Snowshoeing in Iiyama

Iiyama, located in Northern Nagano, is part of Japan’s snow country. Heavy snows fall throughout winter, blanketing the vast rice fields and accumulating in teetering, mushroom-like clouds on the rooves of buildings.

There are many snowshoeing trails throughout Iiyama, from walks along the Chikuma River—the longest river in Japan—to strolls through forests of beech trees in Nabekura Kogen. Those visiting nearby Madarao Kogen Resort for skiing can also rent snowshoes and hike along several routes through the slopes.

Many hiking trails cut through the forests here, visiting some of the area’s impressive waterfalls, such as Zengoro and Sanbon Falls, and numerous ponds. Seeing these sizeable waterfalls completely frozen is a highlight of any tour to the area. Some tours even visit these waterfalls at night and illuminate them for a fantastic photo op.

Skiing, Shrines and Snow Monkeys: The Best Things To Do in Nagano in Winter

In winter, the powder-covered mountains around Nagano make it a top location for snow sports in Japan

When the weather turns cold, the powder-covered mountains around Nagano make it a top location for snow sports in Japan. But that isn’t the only reason to visit Nagano in winter – there are also delicious mountain cuisine, seasonal festivals and the ultimate in après-ski relaxation: onsen. Culture Trip spoke to regional expert Phil Yarbrough for his take on the best things to do in Nagano in the winter.

“Nagano is home to the northern Japanese Alps, many of which stand taller than 10,000 feet (3,048 meters) in elevation,” says Phil, an employee of Northstar Lodge , one of Nagano’s winter lodging locations. “The mountainsides are dotted with snow resorts aplenty and enough backcountry snowshoeing and skiing opportunities to keep you busy all winter.”

In the spring and summer months, Nagano’s natural surroundings are characterised by wildflower meadows and clear alpine lakes. Phil explains, in winter, the landscape completely changes. “When winter hits, the mountains transform dramatically from fiery autumn foliage to mountains blanketed in snow.” At this time of year, Nagano prefecture’s large ski resort areas, such as Hakuba and Nozawa, are particularly popular. “Nagano’s focus is on winter tourism and sport so wherever you decide to stay you won’t be far from access to the slopes, good soba and steamy onsen,” he says.

Go snowshoeing in the Japanese Alps

Phil suggests that travellers looking for an off-the-beaten-track winter experience should take a Little Peaks snowshoeing tour around Kamikochi. On these walks, you’ll wear snow shoes, which allow access to areas of Kamikochi’s dusted slopes that you might otherwise miss. The tours are led by an informative guide, with the opportunity to see winter wildlife unique to Nagano’s Alps along the way.

Take in the beautiful alpine scenery as you wander the slopes, including mountainside ranch trails, frozen ponds and icefalls – it’s a great way to spend a winter afternoon in Nagano.

Watch expert climbers scale a frozen waterfall

Norikura Kogen is a nature preserve in Matsumoto, Nagano, that is famous for its gorgeous waterfalls. Two must-visit falls are Zengorou and Sanbon – both of which freeze during the winter months. Make a trip out to the falls to take in the magical view – and perhaps admire some icy entertainment. The falls alone are a picturesque sight, with the icy surroundings creating a mystical atmosphere. But while only professional climbers are permitted to scale the falls, if you’re lucky, you might see a pro climber scrambling up the frozen cascade.

See the snow monkeys bathe at Jigokudani

Onsen bathing is a centuries-old tradition in Japanese culture, with the earliest written records of it dating back to AD 600. In Nagano, it’s not only the people who bathe in the area’s hot springs, but also the wildlife.

Phil recommends a visit to Jigokudani during your visit to Nagano, home to the most hygienic and health-conscious monkeys in the world. Here, peaceful, snow-dusted landscapes provide a spectacular backdrop to watch the humorous monkeys freely taking part in communal hot-spring bathing. The reserve also offers good walking or hiking, but make sure that you wear waterproof boots as the trails can get really muddy.

Attend an ice sculpture festival

Set against the majestic sight of Matsumoto Castle, Matsumoto Ice Sculpture Festival is an annual event that usually occurs in January. The festival lasts Friday through Sunday, during which time you can watch sculptors create pristine ice creations, eat regional snacks, drink local Japanese sake and take part in family-friendly activities. Look out for creative sculptures of dragons, mermaids and horsemen.

Pro tip: Time your visit as the sun is setting to watch the sculptures light up with colourful illuminations.

Visit Togakushi Shrine in the snow

A Shinto site that consists of five shrines (all of which may be reached by a path lined with Japanese cedar trees), Togakushi offers a serene escape for nature lovers. “Visiting Togakushi Shrine is especially beautiful in the snow – though you may need snowshoes for the trek,” says Phil. Enjoy the reverent ambience of the sacred Shinto site and bask in the elven-like forest that surrounds it, among cedar trees that are more than 500 years old. From here, walk along a cedar-lined trail to see if you can spot the frozen waterfall nearby.

Go skiing at Hakuba Goryu Snow Resort

One of the most popular sports to try in Nagano during the winter is skiing – and what place better to do this than at arguably the best ski area in Nagano? Equipped with every convenience for families and serious skiers alike, Hakuba Goryu Snow Resort offers both beginner and advanced slopes, rental gear, an adjacent Escal Plaza filled with food and drink options and well-groomed slopes and lifts that make access around the resort a breeze. For families who are visiting the resort with children, Hakuba Goryu Snow Resort has both indoor and outdoor areas for kids to enjoy, and there’s also the opportunity to sled down the small slopes or play indoors in a woodland-inspired play area.

Visit Nozawa Onsen Village

After a long day of skiing on Nagano’s excellent powder, making your joints stiff from both the exercise and the cold, a bubbly-hot dip in a natural spring is in order. For a hot bath in Nagano, Phil suggests a trip to Nozawa – a traditional Japanese onsen village. With over 30 onsen to choose from, life in this village revolves around bathing culture. There are even a variety of free onsen to choose from, including Ōyu Hot Spring, which is located in central Nozawa, and is famous for being housed in a wooden, Edo-style bath house. On the way there, stop by one of the village’s many street vendors selling fresh oyaki (steamed buns filled with veggies and cooked with onsen water). A word of warning from Phil, “be careful with the onsen in Nozawa as many of them have very hot water!”

Visit a snow-covered Matsumoto Castle

“If you can catch Matsumoto Castle with snow on it, it’s amazingly beautiful,” Phil says. Matsumoto Castle has been well preserved, with much of its keep being in its original, 16th-century form. The castle grounds are free to wander year-round, but they make a particularly picture-perfect location to explore in the snow. If you visit Matsumoto Castle during a popular time, you might be lucky enough to jump on a free guided tour – which local experts offer in different languages. The castle’s surrounding area is worth exploring too, as Phil adds, “on top of that, Matsumoto has its own brewery and a bar in the downtown area – meaning that after a day of sightseeing and admiring the castle, you can take to the brewery and socialise with other travellers.”

Matsumoto castle is amazingly beautiful in the snow

Cosy up at Enza Cafe

If you’ve visited Shigakigen to see the onsen bathing snow monkeys, Phil suggests that travellers stop at Enza Café for a bite to eat surrounded by gorgeous views of the surrounding snow-covered forest. Sit on the terrace or by a window to soak up the natural scene while enjoying a hot drink or meal. A mix between a cosy café and an intimate restaurant , Enza Café is the perfect place to warm yourself up from the winter cold with a bowl of chicken ramen, a salmon avocado sushi roll or a miso broth – or perhaps splurge on a piece of the café’s popular apple pie.

nagano winter tour

Written for Auski by Pink Lemonade Social

Among the many countries in Asia, Japan is one of the most abundantly endowed with breathtaking landscapes and tourist attractions and is loved by Aussie travellers. Although Japan is beautiful in all four seasons due to its varied landscape, winter in Nagano is particularly stunning. Nagano, in Japan's Chubu region, is home to beautiful mountains and landscapes, and is known as a popular destination for winter sports thanks to its mild climate and abundance of snow. During the warmer months of the year (summer, spring, and fall), Nagano becomes a mecca for the many hikers and outdoor enthusiasts who flock there for the thrill of its beautiful mountains and landscapes. In winter it is a mecca for those seeking deep powder snow and an adrenaline rush and offers some of the best slopes in the country because of the area's powdery mountains. Nagano is home to the northern Japanese Alps, many of which stand taller than 10,000 feet (3,048 metres) in elevation. The large ski resorts of Hakuba and Nozawa in Nagano prefecture are always bustling with visitors. There are plenty of snow resorts in the mountains, as well as opportunities for backcountry snowshoeing and skiing.

However, that's not the only reason to travel to Nagano in the winter; the city is also known for its delicious mountain cuisine, seasonal festivals, and onsen, the pinnacle of après-ski relaxation. Below are the best things to do in Nagano in winter.

The 15 Best Things to Do in Winter in Nagano

Visit the historical kiso valley.

Kiso Valley, located in southwestern Nagano, is an enchanted place and one of the city's most popular tourist attractions. Visit the valley's sacred Mt. Ontake, charming historic towns, and the well-preserved section of the ancient Nakasendo merchant trail for a fascinating journey back in time. There are a few post towns along the Kiso Valley that have been preserved to look as they did when they served Nakasendo travellers, and three of these towns stand out in particular: Magome, Tsumago, and Narai. The wooden structures and cobblestone streets transport guests to a time gone by. The Kiso Valley, a mountain valley in Nagano Prefecture that borders the Central Alps features the Kisoji, a 70-kilometer-long ancient trade route, established along the valley and played a crucial role in the region's economic development.

Beginning in the Edo period, when the Kisoji was combined with other routes to form the 500 km long Nakasendo, it assumed even greater significance. The Nakasendo (which literally means "path through mountains") was one of the two main roads that linked Edo and Kyoto.

All over the valley are breathtaking gorges, rivers, waterfalls, and mountain trails that will captivate your imagination and calm your spirit. If you love being transported back in time, you should definitely check out the ancient towns of Kiso Valley that have been preserved so well under a blanket of snow.

Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival in Winter in Nagano Japan

Image: Instagram/skijapanholidays

Experience the Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival

The Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival is one of the best three fire festivals in all of Japan. The celebration is held annually in the middle of winter on January 15th. As night falls in Nozawa Onsen, men light up the night with their fierce battles in celebration of the festival. The story focuses on a group of unfortunate Japanese men between the ages of 25 and 42 who live in a rural village. Many residents of Nozawa Onsen attempt to destroy a temporary shrine known as a shaden by lighting torches and storming the structure, but a group of 42-year-olds and 25-year-olds stand guard at its top and bottom, respectively. The festival's goals are twofold: to rid the unlucky men of their misfortune and to pray for their health and success. Despite the mayhem and fierce competition, the festival is a good time and a great addition to any trip to Japan.

Enjoy the Iiyama Snow Festival

Iiyama City, located in northern Nagano Prefecture, is one of Japan's regions that receives significant snowfall every winter. In the middle of February, during the snowy winter season, this city hosts the Iiyama Snow Festival, drawing in thousands of visitors from all over the world. At this winter festival, enormous snow sculptures serve as the showpiece, while smaller ones line the streets of the city centre. The competition and evaluation of sculptures is a central part of this festival. Wonderful snow sculptures depicting a wide variety of Japanese themes will be on display here.

Soak up the Culture at Nagano Tomyo Festival

As a commemoration of the city's Buddhist heritage and the 1998 Winter Olympics, Nagano Tomyo has been celebrated annually for a full week in the middle of February since 2004. One of the most well-attended events in Nagano involves lighting the city in the five Olympic colours and adorning the main street leading to the temple with hundreds of gorgeous handmade paper lanterns. Besides the lighting ceremony, there will be other events going on, such as a sake tasting, live music, and an art show. This is a great festival to enjoy if you are in the region in February.

Enjoy a Magical Meal at Restaurant Kamakura Village

What is Restaurant Kamakura Village? Well in Nagano, it’s an intimate igloo village which is actually a restaurant with all the enchantment of a snowy landscape. Eat a nabe hot pot in the comfort of your own igloo at the temporary Restaurant Kamakura Village in Iiyama. The magical Restaurant Kamakura Village, comprised of more than 20 pop-up igloos, is not to be missed if you like to plan your trips around meals. Located in the picturesque town of Iiyama in the prefecture of Nagano, Japan, the restaurant boasts a picturesque setting amidst the snowy Japanese Alps. The seasonal restaurant opens every winter for a little over a month. Visitors can warm their bodies and minds with hot-pot dishes and Liyama specialities cooked over portable clay stoves. The village becomes a romantic dreamscape as night falls and the lights come on. Noroshi nabe, a hot pot made with miso, pork, and local vegetables, will be served to groups of up to four in each of the igloos. The igloos are perfect for enjoying a hearty meal for lunch or dinner, or a quick snack like amazake or soup. You'll find a chilly Shinto shrine in an igloo behind a tiny red torii gate. The area immediately outside the restaurant is ideal for sledding, and those visiting the area's ski resorts might want to stop in for a bite to eat before or after their runs. The cost of lunch in Kamakura Village is 3,700 yen (2,400 yen for children), while dinner for two with noroshi nabe, onigiri rice balls, and exclusive use of an igloo is 4,200 yen (2,800 yen for children). For 1,800 yen (1,200 for kids), you can rent a private igloo between 3 and 4 p.m., enjoy a cup of amazake or soup, and ride in a snow car.

Zenko-ji Omotesando, Zenko Omotesando Nagano

Discover Zenko-ji Omotesando

Over 1400 years have passed since Zenkoji's original construction, and it has since become a true temple of the common people, welcoming all visitors from across the nation and around the world, regardless of their religious affiliation.

The Zenko-ji Omotesando Illumination takes place every winter and transforms the road leading to the temple, known as the Omotesando or 'Pilgrims Path,' into a dazzling spectacle. Beginning in early November and continuing through mid-February, the Omotesando will be lit up to create a glowing path to the temple. Then, beginning in the middle of December, the temple's precinct will be illuminated with lighting and projections that will transform the building into a phantasmal Buddhist paradise of purple and violet, silver and gold.

There is no admission fee to enter any part of the temple, including the holy inner sanctuary. Despite its popularity, the festival is not overrun with people, so attendees can take in the sights without being squished and get great photos without waiting in long lines. Many shops along the Nakamise, the historic street within the temple complex, will extend their hours during the festival. This is a great way to see the city after dark, especially in the brightly lit up Omotesando district.

See the Great Ho-O at Ganshoin Temple

The ancient Ganshoin Temple can be found hidden away in Obuse, located in northern Nagano Prefecture, and hosts one of the finest examples of Japanese art can. In 1848, at the age of 89, a painter by the name of Hokusai created a masterpiece that is still widely recognised and appreciated today. The ceiling of the temple is still covered with his final masterpiece, which has been carefully preserved over the years.

About thirty years after the last reconstruction of Ganshoin, one of Japan's greatest artists, Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), painted a beautiful ceiling picture called "The Great Ho-O" (Phoenix Staring in eight Directions). Since the bird appears to stare directly at the viewer from any angle, the painting is also known as "Ho-O Staring in eight directions."

There have been nearly three reconstructions of this ancient temple, the most recent of which was 180 years ago. The artwork measures a massive 584 by 636 cm. Twelve panels of cypress wood were painted directly, then raised and mounted to the ceiling. Colours of red, green, blue, brown, and gold shine brightly in this high-calibre masterpiece.

Go Snowshoeing in the Japanese Alps

Travellers looking for an off-the-beaten-track winter experience should take a snowshoeing tour around Kamikochi, Nagano's most well-known national park. On these walks, you’ll wear snow shoes, which allow access to areas of Kamikochi’s dusted slopes that you might otherwise miss. The tours are led by informative guides. There is a chance to see winter wildlife that is only found in the Nagano Alps and take in the stunning alpine scenery, which includes mountainside ranch trails, frozen ponds, and icefalls. The city of Nagano undergoes a dramatic transformation in the winter. Many people find this season to be one of the most beautiful despite the fact that it can feel particularly cold and harsh. This untouched valley at the foot of the Japanese Alps offers breathtaking views of the Hotaka Mountains. There are no buses to Kamikochi and no facilities open in the winter at the park, but the beautiful scenery is still there if you're willing to walk. Walking two kilometres through the Kama Tunnel and then snowshoeing along the riverbank is the only way to see the mountains and the crystal clear Azusa River. Having the lakes, forests, and mountains of Kamikochi to yourself is a challenge, but it is well worth it.

Watch Climbers Scale Frozen Waterfalls

One of Nagano Prefecture's most popular tourist attractions is Norikura Kogen, a nature preserve in Matsumoto known for its stunning waterfalls. Zengorou and Sanbon waterfalls are two that you absolutely must see, and they both freeze over in the winter. Take a trip to the falls and marvel at the enchanting scenery, as well as the possibility of viewing some icy entertainment. The falls themselves are a picturesque sight, and the icy landscape adds a sense of mystery to the scene. If you're lucky, though, you might catch a glimpse of a professional climber making their way up the frozen cascade in spite of the fact that only they are allowed to do so. You can also partake in a snowshoe tour to Sanbon waterfall (7,000 yen per adult / 5,000 yen per child for a half-day tour).

Shibu Onsen, Nagano, Japan

Soak it up at Shibu Onsen

Shibu Onsen is a mountainous town in Nagano known for its traditional onsens. Going to Shibu Onsen is like taking a time machine back in history. Historic buildings and a laid-back vibe characterise this charming hot springs community. You can feel like you've stepped back in time as you stroll along the cobblestone streets lined with traditional wooden Japanese inns and dotted with shrines. Shibu Onsen is a well-known hot springs resort that has been around for more than a thousand years. There are nine sotoyu, or public baths, in Shibu Onsen, and if you're staying at one of them, you can use any of the baths for free. There are a wide variety of therapeutic and preventative baths available. Staying at one of these establishments will allow you to take a soothing dip in the cloudy, milky-white waters of a natural hot spring. You will also have the opportunity to sample some of the regional specialities. You can relax your body and mind by taking a dip in a cloudy hot spring after a day of exploring the town. Evenings are best spent wandering the narrow streets in a yukata robe and geta wooden sandals, hopping from onsen to izakaya. The Tamamura Brewery, located close to Shibu Onsen, produces some excellent local sake which is worth a stop.

See the Snow Monkeys at Jigokudani Monkey Park

Jigokudani Monkey Park, one of Nagano's most popular tourist destinations, is located not far from Shibu Onsen. Tourists from all over the world visit this park specifically to see the nearly one hundred Japanese macaques that call it home that enjoy soaking in hot springs. There are no fences separating the monkeys and the visitors, so it's easy to get a good look at them as they soak in the hot tub in the middle of a snowy park. Japanese onsen bathing has a long and storied history, with the earliest records dating back to around AD 600. It is not just humans who enjoy soaking in the hot springs of Nagano; local wildlife does as well. The reserve is also a great place to go walking or hiking, but the trails can get muddy, so be sure to bring a pair of waterproof boots.

When visiting Nagano in the winter, skiing is a must, and the best place to do it is at what is widely considered to be the city's finest ski resort. The Hakuba Goryu Snow Resort is fully stocked with everything a family or serious skier could need, including beginner and advanced slopes, rental equipment, the Escal Plaza, which is adjacent to the resort and is home to numerous dining and drinking establishments, and convenient lifts and slopes. Nozawa Onsen Village, Nagano Japan

Image: Instagram/kamizoh2568

Visit Nozawa Onsen Village

After skiing all day on Nagano's excellent powder and getting your joints stiff from the exercise and the cold, a soak in a bubbling hot natural spring is just what the doctor ordered. If you're looking for a place to relax in a hot spring while in Nagano, then there is no better than Nozawa, a town with a long history of onsen bathing in Japan. In this village, where there are more than 30 onsens to choose from, the culture centres on taking a relaxing soak. One of the most well-known free onsen is the Yu Hot Spring, which can be found in the heart of Nozawa and is housed in a traditional wooden bath house in the Edo style. During the Edo period (1603-1867), Nozawa Onsen was a popular destination for those seeking both natural hot spring baths and skiing. Be wary of jumping straight into the onsen, as the temperature of these alkaline waters can reach levels suitable for cooking eggs (seriously!). Public baths, or sotoyu, are usually between 45 and 49 degrees Celsius, but there are special stations in the middle of town where you can boil eggs in spring water that reaches up to 90 degrees Celsius to make your own onsen tamago.

Visit Matsumoto Castle & the Ice Sculpture Festival

If you're lucky enough to see Matsumoto Castle when it's covered in snow, it's absolutely stunning, which is why it should be on your list of things to do in winter. The keep of Matsumoto Castle has been meticulously maintained and looks largely as it did when it was built in the 16th century. The grounds of the castle can be explored at no cost at any time of the year, but they look especially magical when blanketed in fresh snow. The locals offer free guided tours of Matsumoto Castle in various languages, and if you happen to visit during a busy time, you might just get lucky and get on one.

Matsumoto Ice Sculpture Festival is an annual event that takes place in January and is surrounded by the majestic backdrop of Matsumoto Castle. From Friday through Sunday, festivalgoers can watch ice sculptors at work, sample local fare and Japanese sake, and take part in a variety of kid- and adult-friendly events. Keep your eyes open for imaginative sculptures of dragons, mermaids, and horsemen. Visit at dusk to see the sculptures illuminated in vibrant colours, which makes them even more beautiful.

Nagano’s Winter Activities and Events

Winter is one of the most beautiful seasons of the year. Snow coats the mountains, forests, and valleys in sparkling white. Frosty air brings clear blue skies. Waterfalls and lakes freeze in time. The heavy snows of the Japanese Alps make Nagano a winter wonderland.

Enjoy a myriad of winter activities in Nagano’s ski resorts, glades, and mountains. Over 80 ski resorts can be found around the prefecture, many of which were featured during the 1998 Winter Olympic Games. In addition to their world-class courses and majestic scenery, they offer winter activities like snowmobiling, tubing, and more.

And after a long day in the cold, there’s nothing better than sitting by a crackling fire or soaking in a steamy hot spring bath. Don’t forget some spectacular winter festivals that keep us warm during the long nights, whether through copious amounts of sake, raging bonfires, or both!

See our recommendations below for enjoying Nagano’s winter to the fullest!

Ski Resorts

Nagano’s mountains are home to fabulous ski resorts with a wide variety of courses, plentiful powder, and beautiful views. Nagano’s ski season begins in mid-December and continues through April, with some resorts remaining open during Golden Week (the first week of May).

Most skiers and snowboarders flock to the Hakuba Valley, Shiga Kogen, or Nozawa Onsen, Nagano’s most famous ski areas. You can see a list of Nagano’s ski resorts and their current statuses here.

The Hakuba Valley

nagano winter tour

At the base of the Northern Japanese Alps, the Hakuba Valley features incredible mountain views and Olympic skiing. Hakuba is very popular among international guests, in part thanks to its wealth of restaurants and bars which give to a lively nightlife.

Our Recommendations

  • Hakuba Happo-one is Hakuba’s largest resort with over 1km of vertical drop and a longest run of 8km. It’s especially popular for mogul skiers, but it has something for everyone regardless of level.
  • Tsugaike Kogen Snow Resort is a perfect place to begin your skiing or snowboarding career or to enjoy time together with the family. Its wide-open beginner’s course at the base of the mountain gives you plenty of room to learn.
  • Hakuba Cortina Snow Resort : nothing beats it when it comes to powder. The resort is bowl-shaped, meaning you won’t accidentally leave the resort, and the tree area in the middle is deemed a self-responsibility area–you’re free to go in, at your own risk, of course.
  • Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field has arguably the most beautiful scenery of all of Hakuba’s resorts, especially with the addition of Hakuba Mountain Harbor earlier this year.

Shiga and Kita Shiga Kogen

nagano winter tour

The pristine highlands of Shiga Kogen encompass the 1,300 to 2,300-meter-high plateau above the town of Yamanouchi. With 40 lifts across 19 ski areas, Shiga Kogen is the largest skiing destination in Japan. To the north of Yamanouchi is Kita Shiga Kogen, a collection of ski resorts on the slopes of the northern Shiga and Kosha mountains.

  • Shiga Kogen’s serene natural scenery and variety of courses will bring the explorer in you to life. You can spend days trying to cover every course around the mountain! For the best views, visit the Yokoteyama Ski Area and take the lift to the top of the mountain, stopping for a bite to eat at the summit. For long runs, head to Okushiga or Yakebitai . Ichinose is a good spot for beginners and also has plenty of restaurants nearby for lunch.
  • Ryuo Ski Park is a well-rounded resort with something for everyone. It is well-known for its SORA terrace at the top of its gondola lift, and has a variety of snow activities aside from skiing and snowboarding, like tubing and snow buggy rides.

Nozawa Onsen

nagano winter tour

Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort has one of the longest runs in Nagano at a total length of 10km. You’ll love flying down its scenic courses and blasting through the powdery terrain at the top of the mountain. But it’s not just the runs themselves that attract people here, one of Nozawa’s main charms is its pedestrian-friendly hot spring town, which is just a short walk from the hill. The town retains its traditional atmosphere while making room for stylish restaurants, cafes, and bars. Around town are 13 public hot spring baths where you can soak away your fatigue to prepare for another day of skiing.

Nagano’s Winter Festivals

Don’t get stuck hibernating indoors during the long winter evenings. Instead, experience traditional Japanese festivals and other lively events!

Iiyama Snow Festival

Second Weekend in February (canceled for 2021)

nagano winter tour

Iiyama City is a part of Japan’s “Snow Country,” where heavy snowfall completely covers the landscape. While the snow has been a burden for a long time, residents of Iiyama have taken it and turned it into something enjoyable once again. Now, for two days in February, you can see magnificent snow sculptures in a range of Japanese motifs, from popular anime characters to bullet trains.

Another popular aspect of Iiyama during winter is the Iiyama Kamakura Restaurant. At night during the festival, the igloos here are lit up and you can enjoy beautiful scenery of the igloos and fireworks in the sky.

While the 2021 snow festival is canceled, the kamakura restaurant will still operate from late January to the end of February. See more details  here .

Nagano Lantern Festival (Nagano Tomyo Matsuri)

Early February

nagano winter tour

The Nagano Lantern Festival is held annually in reminder of the 1998 Winter Olympic Games. Zenkoji is bathed in the five Olympic colors, and beautifully-crafted lanterns fill the street between the station and temple. During the illumination a number of other events will happen as well, such as musical performances, sake-tasting and more.

Nozawa Fire Festival (Dosojin Matsuri)

January 15th Annually (canceled for 2021)

nagano winter tour

On January 15th of every year, the villagers of Nozawa Onsen celebrate the Dosojin Matsuri , a fire festival of epic proportions. Male villagers battle with fiery bundles of straw to burn down a mock shrine built for the festival. 25-year-olds defend the shrine while 42-year-olds sit atop it–both ages considered unlucky for men in Japan. Through the cleansing flames, they rid themselves of their bad luck and pray for the health and success of the first-born sons, as well as for the harvests in the coming year.

Kiso Valley Ice Lantern Festival (Hyousetsu no Hi Matsuri)

late January to early February

nagano winter tour

Every year from late January through early February, the Kiso Valley hosts their ice lantern festival along the ancient Nakasendo trail. Beautifully-preserved Edo period buildings glow with warm candlelight and locals set up stalls with festival foods and free hot sake and soup. Interact with local kiso people, try some of its delicious sake, and enjoy the romantic atmosphere of these post towns forgotten by time.

For those unfamiliar with the Kiso Valley, highlights include the Narai, Kisofukushima, and Tsumago post towns, as well as Magome to the south. Many visitors walk the hiking trail which follows the Nakasendo between Tsumago and Magome post towns, or walk along the kilometer-long street of Narai. Kisofukushima is home to two of Kiso’s sake breweries, Nanawarai and Nakanorisan, and has several hot spring hotels and a foot bath to warm up during the cold winter months.

Snow Activities and More

Skiing and snowboarding aren’t the only ways to enjoy winter in Nagano. Ski resorts offer an increasing number of activities like snowmobiling, sledding, and snowshoeing around the mountain. These activities are usually available from the beginning of January to the end of March. Don’t forget to visit some of Nagano’s historic sightseeing spots covered in snow, like Matsumoto Castle and Zenkoji Temple —not to mention the snow monkeys of Jigokudani Yaen Koen .

Snowmobiling

nagano winter tour

If you want to enjoy the cool winter wind and blast through fields of powder without putting on a snowboard or skis, look no further than snowmobiling! Cruise through the snow and gaze over incredible views of the Japanese Alps. See Hakuba Lion Adventure  for snowmobile rides in Hakuba.

Snowshoeing

nagano winter tour

Walk through winter forests covered in snow while enjoying the crisp air and calm, or climb up snowy hills for majestic views of white mountains and fields. You can go snowshoeing on your own or arrange for a guide to take you to some of Nagano’s most beautiful winter locales. Ski resorts such as Nozawa Onsen, Iwatake Ski Field, and Madarao Kogen have snowshoeing trails, and areas such as Togakushi and Norikura Kogen are also popular for snowshoeing. See more details here .

Hot Springs

nagano winter tour

After a long cold day on the mountain, nothing beats a dip in a steamy hot spring bath. Most ski resorts have on-site hot springs, and many hotels throughout the prefecture have natural hot springs on premises. If you stay in a hot spring town like Nozawa Onsen or Shibu Onsen, you can also try public bathhouses called soto-yu, each with their own mineral and healing properties. See our article on enjoying hot springs in Nagano for more information.

WHERE IS NAGANO CITY?

Located around 245KM to the north-west of Tokyo, Nagano City is the largest city in Nagano Prefecture and the primary transport hub for visitors heading to the region’s most popular destinations including the many ski resorts of Nagano, the Jigokudani Monkey Park, the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route, multiple national parks and many other fantastic attractions. Nagano Station is a stop on the Hokuriku Shinkansen line running from Tokyo to Kanazawa – 80 to 110-minutes from the capital depending on which service you choose – along with the Limited Express ‘Shinano’ service running to Matsumoto, the Kiso Valley and Nakasendo, and Nagoya; while the Nagano Dentetsu Line runs to Yamanouchi, home of Nagano’s famous Snow Monkeys. Highway and local bus services also run from the station to many regional destinations including Togakushi, the monkey park and the ski resorts of the Hakuba Valley and Shiga Kogen – Japan’s largest resort – making Nagano City the primary transport hub for northern Nagano Prefecture. While Nagano may be the largest city in the region, it is small compared to the expansive metropolises of Japan with a population of around 370,000. One of Japan’s most liveable cities, Nagano is most famous for the near-1400 year old Zenko-ji Temple – a registered National Treasure and one of the most important Buddhist complexes in Japan – along with the Shinto shrines of Togakushi and samurai town of Matsushiro, that lie within the city boundary.

40 BEST THINGS TO DO AROUND NAGANO

Best Places to Stay in Nagano

Host of the 1998 Winter Olympics , Nagano is known best for its long winter and world-class snow. Boasting the most ski resorts of any region of Japan, there is no doubt that when it comes to skiing and snowboarding, Nagano is one the best destinations in Asia. However the mountains are just as big outside of winter and offer just as many reasons to visit in spring, summer and autumn. When visiting the region, chances are you’ll do so via Nagano City so let’s start there with our suggestion of the best things to do while in Nagano:

1 / ZENKO-JI TEMPLE – NAGANO’S SPIRITUAL HEART / all year round

Founded in 642, Zenko-ji is one of the oldest and most important Buddhist temples in Japan . Less than 20-minutes walk from Nagano Station, follow the city’s historic thoroughfare – the ‘Omotesando’ or ‘Pilgrim’s Way’ all the way to the temple. Arriving at Zenko-ji, visitors discover one of the most welcoming temples in Japan. Housing the oldest known Buddhist statue in Japan, the main temple is a registered National Treasure and the spiritual heart of the region. A morning ceremony takes place every day of the year, with visitors of all faiths and backgrounds welcome, with the temple also hosting several major festivals each year. Within and around the temple complex, guests can stay overnight at one of many traditional ‘shukubo’ (temple lodgings) , offering the most memorable and rewarding way in which to experience Zenko-ji.

However, the history and culture around Zenko-ji temple is not necessarily readily apparent. To make the most of your visit and ensure that you do not miss out on any of tidbits of knowledge and fascinating facts about the Temple, the best option is to take a guided tour with a knowledgeable guide. See below for more information about our tour of the region.

2 / BUDDHIST EXPERIENCES AT ZENKO-JI / all year round

Known as one of Japan’s most open and welcoming temples, Zenko-ji offers visitors of any faith and background the opportunity to try several key Buddhist practices All led by resident monks, ‘goma’ prayer (fire ceremony) , ‘shakyo’ (calligraphy) and ‘zazen’ (seated meditation) experiences are available upon request. Experiences take different lengths of time and can be booked on most days, as long as you provide adequate notice. Visitors wanting to extend their knowledge of the temple might also like to consider booking a tour with us – see below for details.

3 / THE FOREST SHRINES OF TOGAKUSHI / all year round

Japan’s native religion of Shintoism has its roots in nature worship and a belief that notable natural features are imbued with divinity. This belief is on grand display in Togakushi , where the five shrines making up the Shinto complex are spread through the forest with trails leading from one to the next. Of the five, the ‘Okusha’ (Upper Shrine) is the best known due to the avenue of giant cedars leading to it. Many of the huge trees are between 400 to 800 years old and considered inhabited by ‘kami’ or ‘the divine’, meaning that they have as much importance as the shrine itself.

Approaching the Okusha from Nagano, you will pass the largest of the five shrines – the ‘Chusha’ (Middle Shrine). Accessible via walking trails or directly via car or local bus, the shrine is dedicated to wisdom and famous for several enormous cedars that estimated to be around 800 years old. Surrounding the middle shrine, several ‘soba’ restaurants and bamboo craft shops are within easy walking distance.

Togakushi can be quite time consuming to reach if you do not have a rental car. Instead, why not leave it up to the pros and take part in our guided tour of the area which includes accommodation?

4 / RELEASE YOUR INNER NINJA / April to November

For more than 800 years, Togakushi has had a strong association with Japan’s fabled ninjas. Established in the 12 th century, the Togakure school of ninja was founded in the mountains of Togakushi and though practicing ninja maybe few and far between these days – believe it or not there are still some – the mountains and forests of Togakushi now play host to a ninja museum and kids village. Located directly across from the cedar avenue leading to the Okusha, the Togakure Ninpo Museum showcases the local Togakure school of ninja including exhibits of tools and weapons used. Visitors can try their hand at essential ninja skills such as throwing ‘shuriken’ (ninja stars) while the highlight of the museum lies in wait at the Ninja House. Rigged with secret doors, passages and traps to confuse those who enter, the aim is simple – get yourself back out of the house! The house is a true maze, equally fun for adults as it is children

The ‘Chibiko Ninja Mura’ (Kids Ninja Village) is located within 15 minutes walk of the Chusha (Middle Shrine) and designed for children with obstacle courses and everything they need for ninja training. Activities including blow darts and shuriken are available at an extra charge. Children can also dress-up in ninja outfits for the duration of their visit. Two ninja mansions include trapdoors and contraptions, to confuse and delightful the kids as they attempt to escape.

5 / MYOKO-TOGAKUSHI RENZAN NATIONAL PARK / all year round

Located around 1200 metres above sea level, Togkaushi is nestled within the larger Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park. The park is densely-packed mountainous area of forests, waterways, ski resorts and important mix natural and cultural sites. Among its multiple peaks Mount Hiuchi is the tallest at 2,462 metres above sea level while the park takes its names from the peaks of Mount Myoko and Mount Togakushi.

Extending into Niigata and the ski resorts surrounding Mount Myoko, the national park is a destination to itself that can be enjoyed throughout the year.

6 / MATSUSHIRO: NAGANO’S SAMURAI TOWN / all year round

15 Things to Do in Matsushiro & Where to Stay

Located 12km to the south of central Nagano City, Matsushiro is a small enclave known for its samurai heritage and as the former stronghold of the Sanada clan. Today, the town’s samurai heritage lives on many excellent Edo Period attractions including Matsushiro Castle Park, the former Sanada Residence and Bunbu Military Academy, other samurai residences, temples, shrines and museums.

7 / MATSUSHIRO: ZOZAN WAR TUNNELS / all year round

Less apparent than Matsushiro’s celebrated samurai heritage, the town is also home to an open secret beneath its feet. Excavated in the final months of WWII, the  Zozan Imperial Wartime Tunnels  were the intended headquarters of the Japanese military and government during the expected invasion by the Allied Forces. An extensive network of tunnels and subterranean bunkers were around 75% completed when the war came to an end and were as a result, never used. Formally referred to as ‘Matsushiro Daihonei’ or the ‘Matsushiro Underground Imperial Headquarters’, a 500 metre tunnel remains open to the public.

8 / JIGOKUDANI MONKEY PARK / all year round

Located in the Yamanouchi area of Nagano, the  Jigokudani Monkey Park  is one of the region’s most popular destinations. Most famous for their hot spring-loving antics of winter, the monkeys actually come to the park all year round. Each season provides its own unique reasons to visit the park; from the curious sight of the monkeys enjoying life in the snow through winter, to the cherry blossoms and baby monkeys of spring, hot and lush surroundings of summer and the beauty of the leaves in autumn.

Blessed with abundant farmlands, pristine nature, numerous hot springs and heavy snow in winter, Yamanouchi has a strong association with healing, refuge and renewal and Yamanouchi is divided into three areas – Yudanaka & Shibu Onsen, Shiga Kogen and Kita-Shiga Kogen. Staying a one of Yamanouchi’s many guesthouses is an ideal way to enjoy Japan’s renowned traditional service – including traditional ‘kaiseki’ (multi-course) dining that showcases the abundant produce of the region. For further information, see our ‘Discover Yamanouchi – Home of the Snow Monkeys’ page .

10 / SHIGA KOGEN: JAPAN’S LARGEST SKI RESORT / late-November to May

Located a short distance from the Jigokdani Monkey Park,  Shiga Kogen is Japan’s largest and highest ski resort . The resort is comprised of 18 ski areas – some large, some small – spread over more than 600 hectares of terrain and offering more than 80km of ski runs. Spread between five mountain peaks, Shiga offers visitors an unparalleled expanse of interconnected terrain with free shuttle buses running around the resort to the few areas that are not connected. Shiga Kogen’s higher altitude means it receives snow earlier than nearby resorts and keeps it for longer, blessing the resort with the longest season and best spring skiing in Nagano.

Nearby but not connected to Shiga Kogen, the four ski resorts making-up Kita-Shiga Kogen live in the shadow of their much larger neighbour, but also win lots of fans including locals. Of the four resorts,  Ryuoo Ski Park  has the most to offer with some excellent powder up top and long runs all the way back down.

11 / OTHER WINTER ACTIVITES IN SHIGA KOGEN / December to March

Outside of skiing and snowboarding, Shiga Kogen offers a range of family-friendly facilities for visitors. If you are visiting the resort with children or don’t have much experience and looking for a fun and easy activity, Maruike Snow Activity Park – located in the Maruike ski fields – is a great option for you! The activity area is fenced-off and provides you with a various gear including sledges, snow-tubes, snowscoots and snowdrives and lots of snow to make a snowman or have a snowball fight. Further into the resort, the  Yakebitaiyama Family Snow Park  is located directly outside of Prince Hotel West, offering a similar range of activities for kids, families, or anyone wanting to release their inner-child!

12 / HAKUBA VALLEY: NAGANO’S MOST INTERNATIONAL RESORTS / December to late-March

Located between 60 to 90-minutes drive from Nagano Station,  the ski resorts making-up the Hakuba Valley  are considered some of the best in Japan. In total, ten resorts make the area collectively referred to as ‘Hakuba Valley’, offering skiers and snowboarders a vast amount of terrain and spectacular alpine views. Having hosted several events during the 1998 Winter Olympics,  Hakuba Happo One Snow Resort  is the best known and largest of the lot. Within walking distance of the Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal, Happo One has a fantastic range of terrain including epic backcountry.

Nearby  Hakuba Goryu Snow Resort  and  Hakuba 47 Winter Sports Park  are connected and can be enjoyed on a single all-mountain pass. Rivalling Happo One in size and boasting Hakuba’s longest season, these resorts always popular with international visitors. These are only three of the many fantastic resorts of Hakuba!

13 / NOZAWA ONSEN, MADARAO, & BEYOND! / December to April

Around 70-minutes drive from Nagano Station or only 20-minutes from Iiyama Station,  Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort  is one of Nagano’s most popular resorts – offering skiers and boarders around 300 hectares of train between 565 and 1650 metres. Also known for its great powder and setup for snowboarders, Nozawa is a lively resort serviced by a large village full of accommodation, restaurants and bars and ‘onsen’ (hot springs), Nozawa’s reputation is as much based on what happens off the mountain as what happens on it. Across the valley from Nozawa Onsen, Madarao Mountain Resort has quickly found popularity due to its heavy snowfall, great powder and super enjoyable tree runs.

Only 30-minutes drive over the backside of Madarao, the resorts of Myoko Kogen  are quickly coming to the attention of international visitors who have discovered its epic powder. Actually located in Niigata rather than Nagano and nearby the coast, Myoko receives a massive amount of snow each year. The resorts making-up the area collectively known as ‘Myoko Kogen’ are less developed than resorts such as Nozawa Onsen and have pretty liberal policies when it comes to backcountry, making Myoko the up-and-coming destination for international powderhounds.

Known as ‘ryokan’ in Japanese, guesthouses pride themselves on their comfort, hot springs and seasonal ‘kaiseki’ (multi-course) meal service. The type and range of guesthouses is huge in scope, from family-run and homely inns to luxurious hotels with high prices. Staying at a ryokan is all about escaping the troubles of daily life and indulging in the refinement of traditional Japanese service. Most ryokan will offer the option of dinner and breakfast, with traditional ‘kaiseki’ meal service making use of local and seasonal ingredients to create unique and changing menus.

Of course, many guesthouses also pride themselves on their in-house ‘onsen’ and the unique properties of their water. Enjoying a hot spring in the comfort and quiet of a ryokan is without question one of the most quintessential Japanese experience and a must-do while here. With so many to choose from, why not start with the hot springs of Kanbayashi Onsen, Yudanaka Onsen and historic Shibu Onsen in ‘Yamanouchi – Home of the Snow Monkeys’ .

Known as ‘koyo’ in Japanese, the stunning colours of the autumn leaves are cherished and valued, much like the cherry blossoms of spring. The exact timing of the leaves varies from year-to-year and depending on the altitude and location of each area. From late-September onward, the landscape will start to turn and soon be awash with colour – a mosaic of red, gold, amber and brown – as the autumn leaves fill the forests, valleys and mountains through October and November. Needless to say, the higher altitude of Nagano provides the perfect conditions for some of Japan’s most stunning autumn leaves. For information about ‘koyo’ season and the best places to find the leaves, see our ‘Autumn Leaves in Nagano’ page .

34 / WINTER FESTIVALS OF NAGANO / December to March

Visitors to Nagano can enjoy some great festivals each winter, starting with the  ‘Zenko-ji Omotesando Illumination’  in Nagano City. Held each December, the illumination sees the city’s famous temple come to light and life, awash with colour as it and the ‘Omotesando’ (avenue leading to temple) are lit-up in the cold winter night.

The  ‘Nozawa Onsen Dosonjin Matsuri’ , or commonly referred to as the ‘Nozawa Fire Festival’, is one of Japan’s three great fire festivals. The festival is held annually on January 15 but preparation starts in October and involves hundreds of villagers, who build a huge wooden shrine which is then – on the night of the festival – simultaneously attacked and defended by men of the village. Always popular and raucous, the festival ends with the shrine being set ablaze – a remarkable sight and unforgettable night! Please note that a reservation at a hotel in the area may be required for attendance.

In the first week of February, the  ‘Tomyo Lantern Festival’  again sees Nagano City’s historic temple come to light, as light installations and projects offer thanks to the Buddha – an important act in Buddhism – while also commemorating Nagano’s role as host to the 1998 Winter Olympics. Wander among the 1,500 cherry blossom trees and enjoy the festive atmosphere; you’ll see people lounging on picnic blankets looking at the blossoms above them, vendors selling everything from ‘yakitori’ to ice cream, and amazing views over the surrounding alpine mountains.

The Matsushiro Spring Cherry Blossom Festival takes place on the second Saturday of April, within the grounds of Matsushiro Castle Park. Typically blooming in the first week of April, the festival is planned to coincide with the expected peak bloom – referred to as ‘mankai’ in Japanese – with events and performances celebrating the samurai heritage of Matsushiro.

Famous for the excellent preservation of its Edo Period (1603-1868) historic centre, Takayama draws large crowds. Equally famous for its food scene  including Hida beef and Takayama ramen, Takayama attracts visitors as much for its food as it does for its historic streetscapes.

Easily accessible by bus from Takayama by bus, the villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama  were inscribed on the World Heritage list in 1995. Actually consisting of three villages, they are known for this distinctive ‘gassho-style’ thatch-roofed houses set in a beautiful alpine setting of rice fields and high mountains above. World Heritage-listing has ensured that the villages are hugely popular with both domestic and international tourists but don’t let that put you off.

Even better, you can choose to be dropped off at Kanazawa to facilitate further adventures in Central Japan. 5 Things to Do in Nagano in Winter

As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases

Nagano is a prefecture—an administrative jurisdiction traditionally known for being governed by a prefect— located in the Chubu Region, two hours north and west of Tokyo.

Nagano Japan in winter tips

If you were to label Nagano, in terms of what it is as a prefecture, it’s one of the most subtly beautiful regions in the world.

The beauty of Nagano is intrinsic and almost secretive – Odds are, you’ve probably never heard of Nagano, although it’s a popular holiday terminus.

The town is quite literally a scene from an artist’s portfolio; the kind of place that you only see in fantasy movies.

Table of Contents

What to Expect from Nagano in Winter

In the winter, the region experiences a lavish amount of snow, turning the flaming reds, oranges, yellows, and gentle breezes of the fall season into an icy wonderland of subdued and finespun elegance.

In short, it’s the perfect spot to intertwine yourself with the wonderment of nature, find some peace and relaxation, and just absorb the natural beauty of this serene location.

Visiting Nagano city in winter

If you already have your bags packed and ready to go, you may want to take a moment and look over all of the things that you can do while visiting Nagano.

With That Being Said: Here is a list of the five, best things to do and visit while on vacation to Nagano.

1. Matsumoto Castle

If you’re interested in Japanese architecture, visiting Matsumoto Castle exemplifies Asuka and Nara architecture.

Also known as the Crow Castle, it is the oldest castle in the entire country, dating back to the 16th century. It’s designated as a national treasure and it’s not difficult to see why.

The astounding nature of its pristine location, with five stories, towering over the water, which reflects this ancient castle from the Momoyama and Edo era with almost perfect clarity.

Visit Matsumoto castle

It is nestled amongst the Northern Japan Alps and is a must-stop for anyone who is interested in Japanese history and the arrival of Buddhism into the country.

It is one of only 12, original castles in Japan and it earned the nickname “Crow Castle” because of its black walls.

Over its long existence, the castle exchanged hands through violent sieges and it even survived an attempt to have it razed to the ground in the 1800s.

Some believe that the curse of Tada Kasuke hovers over the castle like a thick fog and is primarily responsible for the degradation and eventual leaning of the Tenshu, during the Meiji period.

There is a lot of history to be found here and it only adds to the inherent and lasting beauty of the place and its surroundings.

It is strategically located, practically on a peninsula, and what was once the architectural result of war and combat, directly resulted in the stunning view and gorgeous landscape that serves as the castle’s backdrop today.

2. Nosawa Onsen Hot Springs

Warmth is always what one seeks in the middle of a cold and relentless winter.

Nothing provides a better and more tranquil warmth than submerging into the soul-fulfilling depths of the hot springs at Nosawa Onsen.

Despite the fact that it is a ski town, outside of Nagano, it is well within even the most limited travel constraints and belongs on your list of places to visit while in Nagano.

Visit Nosawa Onsen Hot Springs in winter

When you are on location in Nosawa Onsen, the hot baths are all within walking distance of one another and won’t be hard to find, seeing as they are a primary attraction for tourists in the area.

Better Yet – The springs lie at the foot of Mount Kenashi, so you will be afforded breathtaking views wherever you go within this sleepy little town’s parameters.

The waters of the Nosawa Onsen hot springs are drawn directly from the famous Ogama Spring and some are housed within the interior of several wooden facilities, while others are outside.

Of course, the hot springs are what makes Nosawa Onsen a popular destination and they have been there—at least in the historical record—since the Edo Period from the early 1600s to the mid to late 19th century.

The springs are freely open to the public, so unlike many tourist destinations in the area, you don’t have to pay to access them.

3. Kamakura no Sato

Kamakura no Sato are snow huts that are obviously only available during the cold winter months. They are located in Iiyama City, which itself is located within Nagano.

While the huts don’t resemble anything extraordinary, in terms of architectural complexity, they are wonderful on the inside.

Touring these minuscule snow huts is an exercise in fine dining, where you can even try that local favorite, “hot pot” which is made from all-natural and locally gathered ingredients and includes pork and vegetables.

Kamakura No Sato snow huts

It’s the perfect meal for draining the cold from your bones after a long day in the cold.

If you plan your visit for mid-February, you’ll have the opportunity to catch the Kamakura Festival.

Kamakura stands for igloo and the festival that shares its moniker is an entertaining event with a ton of activities for the kids and a fireworks show.

Amazing Experience: For all of the other nights of the year, the Kamajua no Sato are lit up at night, presenting awe-struck tourists with a landscape of frozen, snowy color as the lights reflect off of the snow. It’s like an icy village of Hobbits come to life, straight out of a fantasy fairytale.

4. Togakushi Shrine

If you’re looking for a little magic on your journey to this striking and beautiful destination, you have to visit the Togakushi Shrine at the base of Mount Togakushi.

There are five shrines at this location and their mystical properties are only heightened when their tops are covered in a fine layer of white snow.

Togakushi Shrine in winter

Before you start your hike over miles of territory that is covered in ancient cedar trees, you can stop at the shrine’s tourist center for a hot meal of Togakushi Soba Noodles.

The best part about this area is the snow caps.

You’ll Love It – Coming here in the winter will give you a heart-stopping view of an entire world that goes back for several millennia, all covered in blankets of crisp, white snow.

If the historical wonderment and shrouded mystique of these historic shrines fail to impress, the view certainly will.

5. Nakasendo Trail

One of the best reasons to travel to Nagano is the jaw-dropping wonderment of the scenery.

It’s quite literally breathtaking in its subtle beauty and you can only, truly appreciate it through quiet contemplation.

The Nakasendo Trail is the perfect excuse to get out and try to take in all of the wonderful sites and sounds of Nagano.

Nakasendo trail around Nagano Japan

You had better prepare yourself before you set out. These trails are numerous and were originally designed to connect Tokyo and Kyoto.

What to Expect: While you will be impressed with massive and open views of the local town and scenery, there is a ton of real estate to cover, so it’s important to pack well for the journey.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for things to do in Nagano in winter, it is one of the most beautiful locations in Japan and well worth your time.

You will want to explore everything and, indeed, this geographical location is full of places to see and things to view.

In fact, a list of five doesn’t even begin to cover the entirety of this historic and gorgeous slice of heaven on earth.
