But, amid the often sunny-meets-relaxed razzle dazzle, there are plenty of opportunities for budget-conscious travelers to feel right at home in the Sunshine State. And these money-saving measures can often lead to enriched experiences, be it taking in Fort Lauderdale's skyscape via water taxi, laying out on one of Florida's free beaches or seeing the southern half of the state via one of the most modern, high-speed train systems on Earth.

As you soak up the Florida sun, here are our top tips to help you save some dollars along the way, along with a guide to daily costs.

1. Pick the right airport to cut travel costs

Florida has more than 100 public-use airports. Of those, 16 of them serve international passengers, with the airports in Orlando , Miami , Fort Lauderdale and Tampa being among those with the most flight options. When considering flight options, look beyond the cost of the individual flights and consider the taxis and/or car rentals required to get to your final destination – it adds up quickly.

Florida is nearly 500 miles north to south, and a drive from Jacksonville to Miami, for example, can take over five hours. Choosing the cheapest flight you can find without considering location can put an almighty dent in your budget when you land.

2. Visit between September and October for the best deals

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. If you're traveling in this timeframe, keep an eye on the weather forecast. While hotel and tour bargains are to be had during the entirety of hurricane season, September and October are much more pleasant temperature-wise than their oft-sweltering summer counterparts. The right travel insurance can hedge against a hurricane scuttling your vacation plans, but it comes at an extra cost – shop around to get the best deal.

3. Some beaches charge a fee, so choose wisely 

Approximately 90% of Florida's beaches are open to the public, and there are more than 1350 miles of coastline to explore. Some of Florida's top white sand beaches that remain totally free to access for visitors include Clearwater Beach, Daytona Beach, Panama City Beach , St Augustine Beach , Destin Beach and Amelia Island.

5. Skip the boat rental and opt for a water taxi

If the cost of a day at sea, on the river or along Florida's Intracoastal Waterway (someone in your group will have to captain the vessel, or you'll need to hire a captain) would implode your budget, get a little taste of the Sunshine State's watery landscapes by heading out in a water taxi instead. Among your options are the Naples Bay Water Shuttle , Tampa's Pirate Water Taxi and Fort Lauderdale's Water Taxi .

6. Save time and money on the Brightline

When traveling around the Sunshine State , getting from Orlando to South Florida used to involve either an hour-long flight or an almost four-hour drive. In 2023, the Brightline high-speed train drastically expanded its track from South Florida (with stops in West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Aventura and Miami) to Orlando, and the entire trip takes just three hours.

One-way tickets start at just $45, and for an even more luxurious experience, you can opt for a first-class ticket that includes food, drinks and premium lounge access from $139.

7. Explore Florida's state parks for discounted outdoor activities

There are 175 state parks throughout Florida, ranging from mangrove-clad to unobstructed ocean vistas. For $60 (plus tax), you can snag an individual annual pass, or $120 (plus tax) for a family/group annual pass for admission of up to eight people at one time.

Among the state park highlights to explore are the Devil's Millhopper sinkhole in Gainesville or embark on a glass-bottomed boat ride in Ocala. In most instances, on-site rentals – like kayaks, canoes and e-bikes – are much cheaper than what's available just outside the gates.

From Busch Gardens in Tampa to WonderWorks in Panama City Beach and, of course, Walt Disney World, you can save some serious money by being strategic and timely when purchasing  Florida theme park tickets. In general, booking as far ahead in advance as possible is the best way to save money compared to at-the-gate transactions.

Consider weekday visits over weekend treks – you're more likely to get better deals, and it won't be as crowded. And, while a park hopper option may always seem like a good deal, think carefully about whether you have time to use it enough to make it worth the money.

9. Stay a few blocks from the sea to save on hotels

Whenever you stay in a coastal Florida city – Naples , Key West , Sarasota and more – an ocean-view room will always come with a premium price. And hotels next to the ocean will usually cost significantly more than their equivalent just a block or two inland.

So unless you plan to spend most of your trip sitting in your room, look beyond the beach for bargains. For example, the Freehand in Miami Beach is tucked just a block away from the ocean in one of the best parts of town and has private suites and budget dorm rooms, as well as one of the coolest cocktail bars in town, the Broken Shaker .

10. Shop at Publix for a cheap meal

Avoid spending a fortune eating out daily by snagging a to-go meal at Publix , Florida's beloved, homegrown supermarket. Among the favorites are the "Pub Sub" (a handmade sub from the Publix deli), its buffalo chicken dip and bakery-made key lime pie. The store itself is a cultural phenomenon, and the money you'll save by dining al fresco is a budget bonus.

11. Experience Florida's tropical landscapes without an admission fee

Some of the best views in Florida are found when you're just moseying around. Hollywood's (yes, there's one in Florida too) oceanfront boardwalk is dotted with independent shops and white sand views that cost nothing to appreciate. In Daytona Beach, the Volusia County Sun Splash Park has access to beachside walking paths and an interactive water fountain.

Not all museums in the Sunshine State come with a fee. Among them is the National Museum of Naval Aviation , home to the US Navy Blue Angels, in Pensacola. Overall, the average total cost of a luxury Florida experience for a family will end up between around $1,200 and $3,500 per day. A weeklong luxury vacation for a family of four would likely end up costing anywhere from $8,500 to $24,000.

For instance, the average low-budget Florida vacation for a family of four (“low-budget” meaning a cheaper hotel and limiting daily spending) is in the range of $400 to $840 per day. This works out to about $2,800 to $5,800 as the total cost for a weeklong family vacation. 

One of the most important elements for having a successful Florida family vacation on a budget is choosing the right area of Florida to visit. Terrible. Flight was cancelled due to the weather in the east and sout east(florida). Did not get any compesation of any kind. According to them, it was not under their control so I lost all the money paid for the 2 fairs from Raleigh, NC to Orlando, Fl.

There were multiple delays but JetBlue tried to make the boarding and departure process as quick and efficient as possible. The crew was as detached from reality as could be, meaning: not very friendly and just doing things by the numbers.

Then we didn't want to leave the gate to get food because we wouldn't know how much longer the delay would be. Then the next gate change. Had we been told that the total time would have been aprox 45 min later we would have left to get food and a beverage. We had to wait again for the okay to the pilot to take off so we were on the runway for another 20 min. Overall, we were delayed over 2 hours which felt like 4 hours.

Me and my husband experienced very bad in American Airlines. We missed our flight going to Doha. The American Airlines was delayed we arrived already 10:27pm. Supposed to be 9:40 pm. So what they did they rebooked our flight and they gave us a hotel. When we arrived at the hotel the front desk said it was fully booked already. Oh my gosh! I said why did you accept the booking if it's fully booked. The guy said that's American Airlines they just book even it's already full. That's 2am already, we have nothing to do so, we decided to go another hotel. We pay the room, food and taxi. Pls give an action on this matter. Refund our expenses and give us more compensation. Not only our room, food, taxi but also our efforts, tiredness looking for a room that can accommodate us.

My experience was above excellent!!!! First the lady that pushed me in the wheelchair to the gate was outstanding!!! My flight experience was OK. The crew are friendly. The Flight was smooth. One thing that didn’t sit well with me was when I was checking in from RSW to head to Nashville the ticket agent told me I didn’t have a seat assignment and asked if I wanted to upgrade to first class for $50. It was impossible to change a carry-on for a checked bag after the initial selection. The flight was delayed 14 hours "to allow for a late arriving aircraft." The seats were shockingly uncomfortable. This was only the second time I've seen seats that didn't recline in an airline. The first was in an East Bloc airline before the fall if the Iron Curtain.

Flying frontier reminded me of flying with my family in the 80’s in all of the worst ways possible. From poor customer service to little to no technology. The plane was dirty old and also stuck in the 80’s. From their seatbelts to not having anywhere to charge our phones the seats and the equipment I wasn’t sure if I was being punked or thrown back in time. Needless to say I don’t see myself flying frontier ever again.

How Much Does a Trip to Orlando Cost? [Including Budgeting Tips For Families]

Are you planning the perfect family vacation to Orlando? Don't let the price tag surprise you after the fact. As you probably know, many of the main attractions in Orlando - Walt Disney World, we're looking at you - are quite pricey.

So, to help you plan your trip, we painstakingly researched every aspect of such a trip. This post shows you exactly how much you can expect your Florida vacation cost to be.

The ballpark figure for Orlando travel cost is just under $200 per person per day before your flights. This assumes you are avoiding the cheapest and most expensive hotels and doing the average activities for an Orlando itinerary - some theme parks, a beach day, and the like. 

Clearly, you can go higher or lower. Keep reading, and I’ll show you how I reached these numbers. We will also include sample itineraries for budget, luxury, and intermediate travel itineraries.

Getting To Orlando

Of course, how you get to Orlando depends on where you are starting from and how you want to travel. There are three main ways to get there:

• Flying into Orlando International Airport
• Driving in a car or RV
• By Amtrak train

Flying will be your best option if you are from outside of the United States, but many travelers choose to fly somewhere else initially and then drive to Orlando from there.

Let’s start breaking down the cost of each of these options.

Cost Of Flights To Orlando

Orlando has a big international airport, so it will be possible to fly directly to Orlando from many international airports. According to Skyscanner , some of the most popular routes to Orlando originate in Chicago.

Keep the following in mind –

• These are the cheapest rates sampled at the same time for various dates in the future. It is certainly possible that with careful planning, you can find cheaper flights.
• You should add baggage fees to these prices. Factor in around $25 per checked bag.
• This is a blog post and not a flight search engine, so obviously, these prices may no longer be available when you search for flights.

Budgeting Tip #1:

You Can Get the Best Rates On Airfare By Planning Ahead. 

If you can plan your trip a few months in advance, it can save you a lot on airfare. Airlines know that demand rises as you approach the date of a flight, so the prices rise accordingly. By choosing your dates far ahead and watching for the lowest fares, you can save hundreds of dollars per flight.

Flights from New York to Orlando can be very inexpensive, with many nonstop options, making it a great city to pair with Orlando for those coming to the US for a longer trip.

Cost Of Driving To Orlando

Depending on your starting point, driving to Orlando could be your best option. While the drive from New York City is probably too far for most travelers, at 17 hours, there are many cities within a reasonable drive. That includes Atlanta (6.5 hours), Miami (4 hours), and even somewhere as far away as Nashville (10.5 hours).

We need to look at three components here –

• Cost of a rental vehicle (if you’re renting one).
• Gas prices.
• Accommodation and expenses along the way.

Orlando Car Rental Costs

If you decide to rent a vehicle for your travels, you can expect to pay reasonable prices for most of the year. For example, here are some starting prices for a 1-week rental in February:

Small car: $26 per day

Large car: $31 per day

SUV: $37 per day

Now, if you are not familiar with rental car prices, those are very reasonable prices, especially in a highly popular destination. Of course, traveling at certain times of the year, or without much notice, can really jack those prices up. For example, here are some starting prices for Christmas week with around three weeks of notice:

Small car: $59 per day

Large car: $63 per day

SUV: $66 per day

That leads us nicely to another budget tip:

Budgeting Tip #2:

Book your rental vehicle as early as possible. .

By starting your rental car search early, you give yourself a good chance of finding low fares. Of course, certain times of year will always be more expensive, but giving as much notice as possible means you can find the lowest fares.

And even if the fares aren't super low when you first look, keep up the search. Fares are subject to change all of the time, so check often and don't be afraid to book when you see what looks like a reasonable price - after all, most agencies will let you cancel your booking with little notice.

So, if you have already booked a car and end up finding a better deal later on, there is really no danger to you - as long as you remember to cancel your other booking!

  The Cost Of Gas

Gas money is a sneaky expense that can add up if you aren't careful with your planning. After all, the U.S. is huge, and even if you are just staying in Florida for your entire trip, you can quickly rack up many hundreds of miles. Here are the one-way distances from Orlando to some common destinations:

Miami: 236 miles

Key West: 393 miles

Tallahassee: 257 miles

Atlanta: 438 miles

New Orleans: 640 miles

Washington, DC: 847 miles

New York City, NY: 1,072 miles

Cost Of Gas In Florida

While the USA is known for having relatively low gas prices, especially compared to most countries in Europe, what are they like in Florida? Well, you can always check the average price in each state at GasBuddy .

Unlike some popular destinations - Hawaii, California, and Alaska come to mind - Florida's gas prices are at the low end of the country's spectrum. Currently, the average price is just $2.36 per gallon. That's very low and, therefore, good news for anyone planning on driving in Florida!

Made It To Orlando – Now What?

So far, we focused on the cost of getting to Orlando. It's time to talk about your expenses while visiting the state itself. We’ll break this into accommodations, attractions, food, and supplies.

Cost Of Accommodation

Another big expense when it comes to travel is your accommodations. Many travelers prefer to spend a little more to get a nice hotel in Orlando. After all, this is a family destination and often a once-per-year or even once-in-a-lifetime destination, so why not make it memorable?

Searching for 3-star hotels , we can see that most land somewhere between $80 and $150 per night for a random date in February. And, except for some of the most popular dates, these prices stay fairly constant throughout the year.

Budget Tip #3

Don't mind the heat go in the summer.

While Orlando is known for having pleasant weather, it does tend to get hot (highs in the 90s Fahrenheit) in the middle of summer . Accordingly, prices drop in most hotels during the hottest months. So, if you don't mind dealing with some heat and humidity, you can save some cash by visiting in summer.

Disney On-Site Accommodations

Since this is Orlando, we have to add one section - Walt Disney World hotels. These properties are situated right in or next to the park, so you don't have to drive and park to get there. Want to stay in Disney World? Well, there are plenty of options, and most of them are nice hotels, but you will certainly pay for it.

Budgeting Tip #4

To really lower your expenses, you can try other types of accommodation, like an Airbnb rental. 

It's always worth checking local listings on sites such as Airbnb or Vrbo to compare prices with hotels. It is possible to find some great deals on these sites, especially if you need multiple hotel rooms and can simply rent a small house or condo instead.

For example, check out these 6 to 8-person Airbnbs right near Disney for just $80 to $88 per night:

Attraction Expenses in Orlando

Walt disneyworld prices.

Let's start with the big one - Disney. As you would expect, prices are high. Prices vary depending on the date of your trip, but standard park tickets start at $109 per person per day for one day. They go down from there, depending on how many days you plan on staying. For example, a 5-day pass is just $83 per person per day. Including the Hopper Option increases the ticket price by between $60 and $80.

That means that an average 3-day pass for a family of 4 (two adults, two kids between 3 and 9) would cost $1,354 on the low end.

Budgeting Tip #5

Consider skipping the park hopper pass.

Many travelers are tempted to go for the Park Hopper option when planning their Orlando vacation. These passes allow guests to move between Walt Disney World, Epcot Center, and Illuminations. For an extra $60 or so, these passes can be handy for anyone who plans on moving fast through these large parks.

However, that's not how everyone experiences these attractions. This is especially true for families with small children or elderly folks.

So, By only purchasing a single park pass for each day, you can save some bucks. After all, these parks are all so big, and most travelers never go to multiple parks within one day.

Cost of Disney Meals

On top of your tickets, you have to factor in food. You didn't think they were going to let you eat for free, did you? Of course not, but Disney does offer some fantastic dining options and meal plans ranging from budget to deluxe.

Budgeting Tip # 4

Skip the meal plan.

If you purchase a meal plan with your tickets, you won't have to worry about tons of small food transactions while you are vacationing! With these meal plans, you have some options. On the low end, there is the Quick-Service Dining Plan , which includes counter-service food - perfect for families who don't want to spend too much time or money dealing with food!

For those wanting to spend more money and get a nicer dining experience in return, Disney offers a Disney Dining Plan , which grants you access to over 50 table-service restaurants, as well as the Deluxe version , which includes the most options for meals as well as appetizers and desserts!

That's all well and good, but do these plans save you money? Well, it depends on how you like to eat while visiting the park, but just know that it can easily cost more than the typical meals you will eat at the park, as this case study shows. So, if you are on a budget, skip the meal plan and eat economically!

Other Attractions

While it is important to discuss Disney World, not everyone traveling to Orlando is going to want to visit that park. After all, there are plenty of other attractions, including several other major theme parks.

Here are the current prices for each of these major attractions for an adult (prices are subject to change, and children get discounts):

Universal Studios Orlando: $170 (adult)

Legoland: $84.99 per ticket

SeaWorld: $84.99 per ticket 

Kennedy Space Center (an hour away from Orlando): $60.99 per ticket

Note that these prices reflect a single-day ticket. Some parks will offer discounts, lowering the per-day cost when you increase the number of days.

Food Expenses In Orlando

Budgeting tip #6, buy some groceries..

Food expenses add up quickly while traveling, mainly because you tend to eat out for three meals per day. However, by purchasing some provisions at a local grocery store, Sam's Club, or Costco, you can save tons of money.

And many parks, Disney included, allow guests to bring food inside. Carefully planning your meals and buying groceries in advance is a great way to save some dough.

Orlando On A Shoestring Budget

Want to see Orlando for as little money as possible? Here's how: be flexible with your flight dates, rent a small vehicle, couch surf, or stay at the cheapest hotels you can find, and only eat supermarket food. Here are some hypothetical expenses for a 4-day trip for two people:

• Flights: $247 ( $137 per person, round-trip from  JFK airport on JetBlue)
• Small car rental for one week: $134 (Hitchhiking and using public transportation are even cheaper options)
• Gas: $12 (based on driving to 100 miles at 30 mpg with gas costing $3.50 per gallon)
• Budget hotel for four nights: $246
• Food: $240 (at approx. $30 a day per person)

Total: $879 or roughly $109 per person per day before attractions.

Luxury Orlando

Are you more interested in decadence than cost savings? No problem! Here is a hypothetical luxury itinerary, assuming you want to spend one week in the city and drive around for some sightseeing while there.

• Flights: $1,170 ( $585 per person, round-trip business class from JFK airport on Delta)
• Full-size SUV rental in Orlando for one week: $418
• Gas: $100 (500 miles of driving at 18 mpg and $3.50 per gallon)
• 4-Star Hotel for one week at $316 per night: $2217
• Food: $1,680 ($120 per day per person)

Total: $5,585 or almost $400 per person per day before attractions.

A “Middle Road” Approach

If neither of those options appeals to you, you might find a middle-ground approach more attractive. Here is a typical 7-day itinerary for a 1-week Orlando trip for two people:

• Flights: $600 ( $300 per person, round-trip premium economy from New York (JFK) on Delta)
• Intermediate SUV rental in Orlando for one week: $259
• Gas: $42 (300 miles of driving at 25 mpg and $3.50 per gallon)
• Airbnb for one week at $85 per night: $595
• Food: $840 ($60 per day per person)

Total: $2,336 or around $166 per person per day before attractions.

As you can see, there are tons of ways to book your Orlando vacation. Which options you select will depend on your preferences, trip dates, and traveling style. In fact, just about the only area you can't save big by being flexible is on your park passes (although some, like Walt Disney World, do fluctuate their pass prices by date).

Because flight prices will vary greatly depending on when and where you are flying from, we can leave those prices out and simply replace them with park pass prices, assuming you enjoy some theme park days and some less expensive sightseeing and beach days. This gives us a great estimate of just under $200 per person per day.

Jacksonville

Jacksonville is an epic place to hang ten. If you dream about barreling off Florida's northern Atlantic Coast, head to Mayport Poles in Hanna Park, located just north of Jacksonville Beach. Better known as The Poles, this has been deemed the city's best surfing spot, and it only costs $5 to park here for a day. Be warned, these waves are best for advanced and expert surfers, not beginners. We suggest packing a picnic and plenty to drink to save even more on your Florida vacation. 

Once you've dried off, explore some of the city's 80,000 acres of parks –- Jax (one of the city's many nicknames) is home to the U.S.'s largest urban park system.  They're super cheap to visit and boast plenty of fun things to do, like kayaking, biking, fishing, surfing, and hiking along nature trails.  Expect to pay $5 per vehicle for a day at Huguenot Memorial Park and Little Talbot Island State Park and $3 per car at Big Talbot Island State Park.

Stay at the Hampton Inn Jacksonville South/I-95 at JTB  for an experience that's both affordable and comfortable. One night will cost about $136. If you'd rather save a few bucks and sleep under the stars, book a space at Kathryn Abbey Hannah State Park for $18 per tent site or $30 per day for an RV spot or cabin.

Melbourne is the place to be if you're looking for a variety of activities to enjoy on your Florida vacation. Gainesville

Spending time in Gainesville definitely won't break the bank -– many of the city's top attractions are either free or super cheap. Home to the University of Florida, this is a college town, which means you'll be able to score some pretty good deals and tasty food during your visit. Bike the off-road trails in San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park for a $4 per vehicle entry fee, launch a paddleboard or kayak on nearby Lake Santa Fe, or visit the Harn Museum of Art and the Florida Museum of Natural History , both of which offer free admission. 

When you've finished exploring, take a load off with a tour of the Sippin' Seven Alachua County Ale Trail . You'll down pints from local, award-winning breweries like Swamp Head Brewery, High Springs Brewing Company, and Daft Cow Brewery. If you're feeling tipsy, take a cab back to the hotel. A room at Hampton Inn Gainesville will cost about $160 per night or much less, depending on when you travel. Pensacola lies on the northwest coast of Florida's Panhandle. Best known for its stunning beaches, emerald waves, and historic sites, this is a great place to stay for a budget-friendly vacation. In addition to affordable hotels and a bevy of free and cheap attractions, you won't run into too many extra costs in this pretty town. Pensacola Beach is a must-visit, especially if you have water-loving kids. Apart from a $1 toll to enter the beach, you'll only have to pay for parking, which is free for the first 30 minutes. After that, you'll pay $0.50 an hour for a street spot. The Free Beach Trolley Service makes it easy to get around without spending a dime. It runs from Parking Lot 288 to Park West between 4 p.m. and midnight from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Perdido Beach lies in nearby Perdido State Park and costs $3 per car or $2 to walk or bike in — not bad for a day at the shore. 

When you aren't soaking up the sun's rays, step back in time at the Historic Pensacola Village or enjoy a walk at Innerarity Point Park. Then, spend some of that cash you saved on a dolphin tour or rent a kayak to explore Big Lagoon State Park. Entrance fees are $6 per car or $10 per person with a boat. Save big by spending the night at a campsite for under $28, or settle into the SpringHill Suites Pensacola for about $180.

Famed for its bucolic pastures and leafy trails, Marion County's Ocala is an absolute must-visit for equestrian lovers and one of the most picturesque towns on the East Coast . Known as the "Horse Capital of the World," this area boasts the highest concentration of horses (and ponies) of any U.S. county, with over 1,200 horse farms within this region's borders. So, don your best cowboy (or cowgirl) hat and pull up your riding breeches for a tour you won't forget. 

Cactus Jacks Trail Rides are ideal for horse aficionados. Guides lead you and your horse through the Cross Florida Greenway's most beautiful spots. Not in the mood to saddle up? While you're in town, be sure to visit Silver Spring State Park, which lies about 7 miles east of the city. One of the Sunshine State's best state parks , you'll only have to pay $8 per car to gain access to multiple activities, like hiking, biking, and kayaking. A stay at the Equus Inn will cost about $153 per night, or you can camp in Silver Springs State Park for about $30 or in one of their cabins for roughly $120.

There are so many exciting and cheap things to do in Sarasota that you'll wish you could stay longer. Sitting serenely on Florida's Cultural Coast, this beach-lined gem is truly gorgeous. Here, you'll find Siesta Key, one of Florida's best beaches . Blanketed in powdery quartz sand, this beauty is a big draw for families and couples alike. Bring a bucket because the shelling in Sarasota is hard to beat — you may even find a shark's tooth or two. 

Once you've finished washing the sand from your bathing suit, head into town to enjoy the more artsy side of things. The Ringling estate should top the list of all budget travelers to Sarasota. It includes the Museum of Art, the Ca' d'Zan mansion (circa the 1920s), the Bayfront Gardens, and the Circus Museum. St. Augustine

Historic St. Augustine is indelibly charming, not to mention easy on the wallet. America's oldest occupied city, this pretty place is filled with cheap and free attractions perfect for families and couples alike. There's no fee to visit the Governor's House Cultural Center and Museum, while a trip to Fort Mose Historic State Park will cost nothing if you wander the grounds or $2 for entry to the visitor center. Window shopping along the pedestrian-only St. George Street is also free unless you're tempted to buy some of the wares.

If you're on the fence about bringing the kids, do it. St. Augustine boasts 42 miles of pristine beaches that are fun for the whole family . St. Augustine Beach, in particular, is a perfect place to spend a fun and budget-friendly day by the shore. It boasts a fishing pier, splash park, and volleyball courts. The only fee you'll have to pay to enjoy this sandy wonder is for parking. Expect to hand over $10 a day. Parking for non-residents at St. Johns County Ocean Pier Park costs $6 per day, so you'll have plenty left to enjoy a meal at one of the nearby restaurants. 

The Holiday Inn Express St. Augustine – Vilano Beach is a brilliant bet for affordable accommodations. This IHG hotel is praised by reviewers on Tripadvisor for its location, which is near both the beach and the historic downtown. It costs about $290 a night, much less in the low season.

New Smyrna Beach

The star attraction in New Smyrna Bech is its eponymous 17-mile sugar white beach. This sandy wonder boasts a boardwalk and is packed with enough cheap (and fun) things to do that you'll be happy you came, especially if you're traveling with a dog. The beach boasts a dog-friendly swimming section on the Indian River, and furry friends can accompany you (on a leash) to visit the inlet shore sections.

Pack a surfboard or rent one while you're in town — Surfing Magazine voted this spot as one of the best surf towns in America. The northern end of the park is home to one of the area's top affordable attractions, Smyrna Dunes Park, which is 184 acres in size and runs along the Ponce de Leon Inlet. Fort Walton Beach

While Fort Walton Beach may not be as famous as the more buzzy and expensive Miami Beach, you will have just as much fun when visiting this Panhandle beauty. Set just under 9 miles west of Destin and across from Okaloosa Island, there are plenty of fun things to do in this cheap Florida vacation destination. 

Visiting Okaloosa Beach is a no-brainer for sun lovers. You can swim, lounge, search for shells, or wander the boardwalk at this 3-mile strand, which is less crowded than other, more popular beaches in the state. Another plus is that the county banned smoking on the beach in early 2023, so the only air you breathe will be salty and fresh. Looking to protect your wallet even further? You've come to the right place. Fort Myers is full of affordable things to do on your Florida Vacation. Schedule your visit to coincide with the Downtown Fort Myers Music Walk, a free-to-attend extravaganza of live music held in the River District on the third Friday of every month. They came for Florida's sun and sand. They got soaring costs and a culture war.

One of the first signs Barb Carter’s move to Florida wasn’t the postcard life she’d envisioned was the armadillo infestation in her home that caused $9,000 in damages. Then came a hurricane, ever present feuding over politics, and an inability to find a doctor to remove a tumor from her liver.

After a year in the Sunshine State, Carter packed her car with whatever belongings she could fit and headed back to her home state of Kansas — selling her Florida home at a $40,000 loss and leaving behind the children and grandchildren she’d moved to be closer to.

“So many people ask, ‘Why would you move back to Kansas?’ I tell them all the same thing — you’ve got to take your vacation goggles off,” Carter said. “For me, it was very falsely promoted. Once living there, I thought, you know, this isn’t all you guys have cracked this up to be, at all.”

Florida has had a population boom over the past several years, with more than 700,000 people moving there in 2022, and it was the second-fastest- growing state as of July 2023, according to Census Bureau data . While there are some indications that migration to the state has slowed from its pandemic highs, only Texas saw more one-way U-Haul moves into the state than Florida last year. Mortgage application data indicated there were nearly two homebuyers moving to Florida in 2023 for every one leaving, according to data analytics firm CoreLogic.

But while hundreds of thousands of new residents have flocked to the state on the promise of beautiful weather, no income tax and lower costs, nearly 500,000 left in 2022, according to the most recent census data. Contributing to their move was a perfect storm of soaring insurance costs, a hostile political environment, worsening traffic and extreme weather, according to interviews with more than a dozen recent transplants and longtime residents who left the state in the past two years.

“It wasn’t the utopia on any level that I thought it would be,” said Jodi Cummings, who moved to Florida from Connecticut in 2021. “I thought Florida would be an easier lifestyle, I thought the pace would be a little bit quieter, I thought it would be warmer. I didn’t expect it to be literally 100 degrees at night. It was incredibly difficult to make friends, and it was expensive, very expensive.”

Cummings expected she’d have extra money in her paycheck working as a private chef in the Palm Beach area since the state doesn’t have an income tax. But the high costs of car insurance, rent and food cut into that additional take-home pay. After six months of dealing with South Florida’s heat and traffic, she began planning a move back to the Northeast.

“I had been so disenchanted with Florida so quickly,” Cummings said. “There was this feeling of confusion and guilt about wanting to leave, of moving there then realizing this is not anything like I thought it would be.”

While costs have been rising across the country, some areas of Florida have been hit particularly hard. In the South Florida region, which includes Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach, consumer prices in February were up nearly 5% over the prior year, compared to 3.2% nationally , according to the most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Homeowners insurance rates in Florida rose 42% last year to an average of $6,000 annually, driven by hurricanes and climate change , and car insurance in Florida is more than 50% higher than the national average, according to the Insurance Information Institute. While once seen as an affordable housing market, Florida is now among the more expensive states to buy a home in, with prices up 60% since 2020 to an average of $388,500, according to Zillow.

For Carter, who made the move in 2022 from Kansas to a suburb of Orlando for the weather, beaches and to be closer to her grandchildren, the costs began to quickly pile up. She purchased a manufactured home and initially expected the lot rent in her community to be $580 a month. But when she arrived she learned her monthly bill was actually $750, and by the time she left it had jumped to $875 a month. Along with the $9,000 in repairs from the armadillos, her car insurance doubled and Hurricane Ian destroyed her home’s roof on her 62nd birthday.

There were also the ever-present conversations and disagreements over politics that started to wear on her. Carter, who describes herself as a “middle of the road” Republican, said she learned to keep her opinions to herself.

“You cannot engage in a conversation there without politics coming up, it is just crazy. We’re retired, we’re supposed to be in our fun time of life,” she said. “I learned quickly, just keep your mouth shut, because I saw people in my own community break up their friendships over it. I don’t like losing friends, and especially over politics.”

But she said the final straw was when she couldn’t find a surgeon to remove a 6-inch tumor from her liver that doctors warned could burst at any moment and lead to life-threatening sepsis. After being passed among doctors, she finally found one willing to remove the tumor. But when she called to schedule the surgery, her calls went unanswered and her messages weren’t returned. After months of trying and fearing for her life, she returned to Kansas to have the procedure done.“It just seemed like one challenge after another, but I kept with it until there was literally a lifesaving event that I needed to get handled and I wasn’t able to do it there,” she said. “I think it was the most difficult year of my life.”

No state has had more residents relocate to Florida in recent years than New York, with 90,000 New Yorkers moving there in 2022, according to census data. Among all out-of-state mortgage applicants, nearly 9% were from New York in 2023, slightly lower than the previous two years but similar to 2019, according to CoreLogic. One of those New York transplants was Louis Rotkowitz. He lasted less than two years in Florida.

“Like every good New Yorker, this is where you want to go,” he said by phone while driving the last of his belongings out of the state to his new home in Charlotte, North Carolina. “It’s a complete fallacy.”

After years working in emergency medicine, and nearly dying from a Covid-19 infection he contracted at work, Rotkowitz said he and his wife were looking for a more pleasant, affordable lifestyle and warmer weather when they decided to buy a house in the West Palm Beach area in 2022. He got a job there as a primary care physician and his wife took a teaching position.

But he said he quickly found the Florida he’d moved to wasn’t the one he’d experienced on regular visits there over the years. His commute to work often took more than an hour each way, he struggled to get basic services like a dishwasher repair, and the cost of his homeowners association fees doubled.

“I had a good salary, but we were barely making ends meet. We had zero quality of life,” said Rotkowitz.

Along with the rising costs, Rotkowitz said he generally felt unsafe in the state between the erratic traffic — which resulted in a number of his patients being injured by vehicles — and a state law passed in 2023 that allowed people to carry a concealed weapon without a license.

“Everyone is walking around with guns there,” he said. “I consider myself a conservative guy, but if you want to carry a gun you should be licensed, there should be some sort of process.”

Veronica Blaski, who moved to Florida from Connecticut, said rising costs drove her out of the state after less than three years. When at the start of the pandemic her husband was offered a job in Florida making more money as a manager for a landscaping company, Blaski envisioned warm weather and a more comfortable lifestyle.

The couple, both in their 40s, sold their home in Connecticut and were starting to settle into their new community when Blaski said they were hit with a “bulldozer” of costs at the start of 2023.

Her homeowners insurance company threatened to drop her coverage if she didn’t replace her home’s 9-year-old roof, a $16,000 to $30,000 project, and even with a new roof, she was expecting her home insurance rates to double — one neighbor saw their insurance go from $600 a month to $1,200 a month.

She was also facing rising property taxes as the value of her home increased, her homeowners association fees went from $326 a month to $480, and her insurance agent warned that her car insurance would likely double when it was time to renew her policy. Her husband had to get a second job on weekends to cover the higher costs.

While Florida has an unemployment rate below the national average, Blaski and others said wages weren’t enough to keep up with their expenses. The median salary in Florida is among the lowest in the country, according to payroll processor ADP. To afford a home in one of Florida’s more affordable metro areas, like Jacksonville, a homebuyer would need to earn $109,000 a year, around twice as much income as a buyer would have needed just four years ago, according to an analysis by Zillow.

“My little part-time job making $600, $700 a month went to paying either car insurance or homeowners insurance, and forget about groceries,” said Blaski, who was working in retail. “There are all these hidden things that people don’t know about. Make sure you have extra money saved somewhere because you will need it.”

When her husband’s former boss in Connecticut reached out to see if he’d be willing to return, the couple leaped at the chance.

The reverse migration out of Florida isn’t just among newcomers, but also among longtime residents who said they can no longer afford to live there and are uncomfortable with the state’s increasingly conservative policies, which in recent years have included a crackdown on undocumented immigrants, a ban on transgender care for minors, state interventions in how race , slavery and sexuality are taught in schools, and a six-week ban on abortions .

After more than three decades in the Tampa Bay area, Donna Smith left the state for Pennsylvania in December, with politics and rising insurance costs playing a major role in her decision to leave.

“It breaks my heart, it really does, because Florida was really a pretty great place when I first moved there,” Smith said.

Having grown up in Oklahoma, Smith considered herself a Republican, but as Florida’s politics shifted to the right, she said she began to consider herself a Democrat. It wasn’t until the past several years, though, that politics started to encroach on her daily life — from feuds between neighbors and friends to neo-Nazis showing up at a Black Lives Matter rally in her small town.

“When I first moved to Florida, it was a live-and-let-live sort of beach feel. You met people from all over, everybody was relaxed. That’s just gone now, and it’s shocking. It’s just gone,” said Smith, 61, who works as a graphic designer and illustrator. “Instead, it’s just a constant stressful atmosphere. I feel as though it could ignite at any point, and I’m not a fearmonger. It’s just the atmosphere, the feeling there.”

She was already considering a move out of the state when she was told by her homeowners insurance company that she would need to replace her home’s roof because it was older than four years or her insurance premium would be going up to $12,000 a year from $3,600, which was already double what she had been paying. Even with a new roof, she was told her premium would be $6,900 a year. Before she could make a decision about what to do, her insurance policy was canceled.

Shortly after, Smith ended up moving to the Lancaster, Pennsylvania, area, where she is closer to her adult children. While the majority of voters in her new county chose Donald Trump in the last election, she said politics is no longer such a heavy presence in her everyday life.

“I don’t feel it is as oppressive. People don’t wear it on their sleeve like they did in Florida,” she said. “When you walk in a room, you don’t overhear a conversation all the time where people are saying ‘Trump is the best’ or ‘I went to that last rally,’ and they’re telling total strangers while you’re just waiting for your car or something. It was just everywhere.”

Costs and politics were also enough to cause Noelle Schmitz to leave the state after more than 30 years, despite her son having a year left in high school, and relocate to Winchester, Virginia. She said the politics became ever-present in her daily life — one former neighbor had a massive Trump banner in front of their house for years, and another had Trump written in big letters across their yard. When she put out a Hillary Clinton sign in 2016, it was stolen and her house was egged.“I saw my neighbors and co-workers become more radicalized, more aggressive and more angry about politics. I’m thinking, where is this coming from? These are not the people I remember,” Schmitz said. “I was finally like, we need to get the hell out of here, things are not going well.”

For some Florida newcomers though, politics is the main draw to the state, said John Desautels, who has sold real estate in Florida for decades. While politics never used to be a topic for homebuyers, Desautels said it is now a regular subject his clients bring up. Rather than asking about schools or amenities in a community, prospective buyers are asking him about the political affiliations of a certain neighborhood.

“One of the first things they say is, ‘I don’t want to be in one of them X or Y political party neighborhoods,’” Desautels said. “I spend hours listening to people vent to me about fleeing the communist government of XYZ and they want to come to freedom or whatever. So the politics have been the biggest issue when we get the call.”

Even home showings have become a politically sensitive issue. He recalled showing an elderly woman one property where there were Confederate flags at the gate and swastikas on the fish tank.

But while politics are a lure to people arriving in the state, he said they’re also among the reasons sellers tell him they’re leaving, and the state’s politics have deterred some of his gay or nonwhite clients from moving there.

“The problem is, when we alienate protected classes, it sounds like a good sound bite, but you’ve got to remember those are people who spend money in our community,” he said. “For this pro-business, free state, I’m feeling it in the wallet, bad.”

In Kansas, Carter says it’s good to be home. She moved into a 55-plus community in a small town about 10 miles from Wichita. While in Florida she was paying nearly $900 in lot rent for her manufactured home, she now pays just $520 in rent for a cottage-style apartment — a place she estimates would have cost her $1,800 a month in Florida.

With the money she’s saving in Kansas, she can afford to visit Florida.

“People call me the modern-day Dorothy,” she said. “There’s no place like home.”

‘enjoy the ride:’ florida’s economy is expected to thrive. but here’s the catch, sunshine state is expected to outpace national economy through 2027.

Florida’s “jumbo jet economy” is expected to do better than the rest of the nation in the upcoming years — though there are a couple of caveats, according to UCF economist Sean Snaith .

Snaith — the director of UCF’s Institute for Economic Forecasting — released his latest forecast for the state on Thursday morning.

According to the forecast, the huge influx of people into the state is set to keep GDP and job growth above the national average through 2027.

“Florida is going to keep cruising at a higher altitude than the rest of the country,” Snaith predicted. “That’s because the ‘twin engines’ of a robust labor market and population growth are propelling us forward.”

However, this population growth could have other consequences.

Snaith warned there could be “some turbulence” thanks to record-high consumer credit card debt in the state, which averaged at a 21% interest rate.

The reason for this, he explained, is that the cost of living has outpaced wage growth in the state for over two years. Because consumers are expected to spend less heavily in the near future, this could open them up to a “financial shock.”

“Florida should enjoy the ride through these economically friendly skies with seatbelts fastened — just in case,” Snaith said.

Other highlights from Snaith’s forecast are as follows:

• Housing : Thanks to high mortgage rates — a product of high inflation and Federal Reserve policy — housing might not be as big of a driver in the economy over the next few years. Existing homes have seen higher sales prices, and the number of new homes being constructed is on a downward trend.
• Job Growth : In 2024, a nationwide slowdown in the economy is expected to decelerate job growth. The year-over-year growth in Florida hit 5.7% in 2022, though growth rates are expected to dip toward 0.6% by 2027.
• Population : With many “baby boomers” hitting the end of their careers, the state will see more retirees and job-seekers moving in.
• Personal Income : Growth is predicted to average 3.6% throughout 2024-2027. During this timeframe, Florida’s average growth is set to be around 0.8% higher than the national average.

• slow to 2.2% in 2025
• rise to 2.5% in 2026
• slow again to 2.1% in 2027

However, Florida’s above-average cost of living can take a toll on your ability to keep more money in your bank account . That is especially true when it comes to these 10 crucial costs.

Housing costs in Florida are above the nationwide average. The average cost of a house in Florida is $392,306, according to the most recent data from Zillow. That’s nearly $50,000 higher than the national average of $347,716.

It’s also notably higher than the average cost of a house in the neighboring states of Georgia ($321,821) and Alabama ($221,490). So, if you are thinking of spending your golden years in Florida, housing is one area where you might struggle to stretch your retirement savings.

Each year, the IRS forgives millions in unpaid taxes. If you have more than $10,000 in tax debt, or have 3+ years of unfiled taxes, you could get forgiveness too. You might be eligible to lower the amount you owe, or eliminate your tax debt completely.

Luckily for warm-weather lovers, there isn’t much chance of snow in Florida. But all that sunshine and heat can take a toll on your budget, especially if you spend most of your time inside with the air conditioner running.

Per data compiled by SoFi, Floridians pay an average of $130 per month on electricity alone, according to a SoFi analysis of data.

Homeowners insurance

The cost of homeowners insurance in Florida is dramatically higher than in other parts of the country.

You can expect to spend an average of $6,000 on homeowners insurance in Florida per year. That is much higher than the national average of $1,700.

Some say the higher insurance costs are a result of devastating hurricanes and tropical storms. However, the Insurance Information Institute says Florida’s high costs are the result of widespread fraud and litigation.

Car insurance

If you plan to own and operate a car in Florida, you will need automobile insurance, which costs more on average in Florida than in other states.

Expect to pay an average of $1,308 for the minimum required amount of insurance (77% higher than the national average) or $3,950 for full coverage (55% higher than the national average), according to Bankrate.

Health insurance premiums

On top of paying more for homeowners and car insurance, Floridians also pay more in health insurance premiums.

Per data from Forbes, households with employer-supported insurance pay an average annual premium of $7,258 for family coverage — the highest in the nation.

Medigap insurance plans

Medigap health insurance plans cover gaps in traditional Medicare coverage. Thanks in large part to its popularity among retirees, Florida has a high percentage of individuals on Medicare.

The demand for Medigap coverage in Florida means residents often pay above-average prices for a policy.

After a rapid price increase at Florida’s pumps in March, the average cost of gas in the state dropped to $3.52 per gallon in early April, a few cents below the national average. However, in February, Florida’s gas prices were among the 10 highest in the country.

In other words, depending on the month, Florida’s gas prices can be among the highest in the nation, or they can be perfectly average. The fluctuating prices can make it hard to budget for transportation in Florida.

Individual Floridians spend an average of $287.27 per week on groceries, while Florida households with children spend around $341.40 per week on groceries, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures from earlier this year. That makes Florida’s groceries the fifth-priciest in the nation.

The situation is even worse if you live in Miami. The city surpasses the country’s other major metro areas — including New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco — to take the top spot as the most expensive city to buy groceries.

In fairness to Florida, golfing doesn’t necessarily cost more on average in the state compared to everywhere else. But Florida has more than 1,000 golf courses, and you could spend a minimum of $35 to $50 to book a round, with top-tier courses costing well over $100.

But there’s good news for Florida residents who love to golf but hate wasting money: Florida residents often get discounted fees compared to out-of-state players, which should help you save money.

Whether you dream of a stress-free retirement in Florida or want to move to the state at a younger age, beware of some of the higher costs in the Sunshine State.

• How often you’re traveling. A single-trip policy may be the most cost-effective if you’re only going on a single trip this year. But a multi-trip travel insurance plan may be cheaper if you’re going on multiple international trips throughout the year. Annual travel insurance policies cover you for a whole year as long as each trip doesn’t exceed a certain number of days, usually 30 to 90 days. 
• Credit card has travel insurance benefits. The best credit cards offer perks and benefits, and many offer travel insurance-specific benefits. The coverage types and benefit limits can vary, and you must put the entire trip cost on the credit card to use the coverage. If your trip costs more than the coverage limit on your card, you can supplement the rest with a cheaper travel insurance plan.
• The coverage you need. When looking for the best travel insurance option at the most affordable price, only buy extras and upgrades you really need. “Most domestic health insurance plans, including Medicare, will not cover medical bills abroad,” said Morrow. Even if you’re staying stateside, you may find value in an affordable travel insurance plan with medical coverage if you have a high-deductible health plan (HDHP).
