IMS tank or Safari ?

By Beaver64 , January 8, 2023 in DRZ400/E/S/SM

I'm thinking about a 17 Ltr tank for three reasons, the first to extend my miles which is obviouse, second to maybe throw the weight down a little when off road, and 3 to maybe give the rads a bit more protection as they cover the sides.

Question is, which one to buy? any thoughts on them??

That said, I maybe won't have a choice as new they are two expensive so looking for a used one.

Anyone in the UK selling a tank ....

I can only comment on the Safari Tank.    17 litres gets me a little over 400 Kms.  The protection of the radiators is excellent as is the quality and robustness of the tank.  Safari have always been excellent to deal with (even replacing a petcock at no charge out of warranty).  Riding with the fuel level low helps the center of gravity. I note that the IMS tank uses OEM shrouds so may not provide as much side protection for the radiators as the Safari tank does.  If I had to be critical I'm not a huge fan of the colour (and I wouldn't get a clear version due to UV degradation.  Fit was OK.  I have previously used the Safari on the SM using the rubber tank mount method, I am now using it in my E with the OEM screw mounts.  The E version of mounting makes the tank more secure and the tank moves less.  The tank can be mounted on either style of frame as both styles are accounted for in the design.

the IMS comes down the sidfes same as yours does, but got to say the Safari does look very smart there on your bike.

I do know where there is a 28 Ltr Safari but think it will be too big for what I want?

Just now, Beaver64 said: Safari but think it will be too big for what I want?

that depends - the 27 litre is good for trips to the moon and back.....

Haha

What roley said. May also want to consider the 3.9 gallon Clarke. I had two IMS 4 gallon tanks develop a leak. First one on the side, second one in the top area about midway.

If you don't go for that Safari tank I'd love the details for it dude, little drink for you as a "finders fee" if it's in good nick and a decent price.

IMS tank does not use the OEM shrouds, Acerbis does.

DRZ 400 UK on face book... its on there, guy called Nick (think there are 2 groups with same title)... at least if you buy it, it stops me buying it LOL

Have had an IMS for about a year now. Very happy with it so far. 150 miles to reserve under normal riding conditions (SM on  street)

Little bit of shenanigans fitting it, particularly the saddle. Couple minutes with a heat gun involved but quite straight forward. IMS tech support and customer service was excellent.

Took the baffle and valve from an Acerbis locking cap and it swaps right into the IMS cap so no vent hose needed.

150 miles to reserve on a tank that large for a SM doesn't seem to be very good fuel economy. The range should be 200 miles or better with that.

I suspect it’s the terrain.

Cars that I got near 40mpg in Western Mass barely break into the 30s around here, and that’s just daily driving. The bike is spending a significantly larger percent of time at WOT in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear.

I got a safari tank on my 2020 DRZ 400s and I love it it’s the 17L the only thing I don’t like is stickers or graphics won’t stick to the tank!

DRZ400e - 17lt or 28lt safari tank? Thoughts?

Discussion in ' Thumpers ' started by KJB , Dec 26, 2012 .

KJB

I'm running a brand new DRZ and I'm going through the motions of ordering my good bits! I've been trawling the posts but can't find a good answer to 17lt or 28lt question. What pitfalls will I hit with the 28lt? Most of my riding will be well under 300km before a refuel... However there are some big rides in the future... 17lt with a nomad tank could be the ticket?

AZ TOM

AZ TOM Long timer Supporter

Just my 2 cents, the bigger the tank the longer the ride & the more peace of mind.

zokalr13

zokalr13 Been here awhile

my E gets such good gas mileage that a very large tank seems overkill -I run a 14l ascerbis and it lasts a long time plus its slimmer ...but if you are planning a cross continent tour then disregard my advice.
I'm trying to avoid my bike becoming too pregnant and hefty on the single track work... I've heard there can also be complications with the radiator guards and a brace with the 28lt

Available in multiple color choices. Choose Natural if you wish to easily see the fuel level of your bike. 4.0 gallons.

Gas Tank Grip Pads, TechSpec

drz400 safari tank

TechSpec’s Motorcycle Tank Grips were developed to improve body, bike control and increase riders comfort. Gripping your motorcycle between your knees or thighs improves overall control of your ride by better securing your body weight and seat position under the forces of braking, cornering and acceleration while also relieving pressure from your wrists, elbows, shoulders and lower back giving you increased control and a more comfortable, safer ride. Snake Skin is a thin, .125” medium durometer “rubber” material that offers a secure, comfortable grip, durable protection and a clean stock look.

This universal precut kit includes left and right tank grips. (8" X 3") Triangle

Gas Cap Tank Vent

drz400 safari tank

If you're like us, you hate the long floppy vent hose hanging off the cap of your aftermarket tank.

This one-way vent cap replaces the long hose with a short one only about 2" long. It allows air into your tank but prevents fuel from sloshing out.

Machined from billet alloy and anodized for good looks.

   Not for stock fuel tanks!

Gas Cap, Acerbis Locking

drz400 safari tank

Security for your fuel tank. Includes 2 keys. Internally vented with a check valve that prevents spillage in case of a tip over.

Fits Acerbis, IMS and Safari tanks only .

Gas Cap, Clarke Replacement

drz400 safari tank

A replacement Clarke Gas Cap that fits most Clarke Gas tanks. Comes with rubber gasket.

Gas Cap, IMS Replacement

drz400 safari tank

A replacement gas cap for your IMS tank. Newly redesigned to resist damage from new fuel additives that were hard on the seal in the old style cap.

Gas Cap, Stock Tank Zeta CNC

drz400 safari tank

This CNC cap will replace the stock gas cap on the stock tank. You do need some parts from the stock cap, so don't throw it away yet! It is not difficult and this kit includes the additional hardware required. Also included is a vent tube with a matching cap.

For use on STOCK TANK ONLY! This is NOT a locking cap. Does not fit California model DR650

Petcock, 'Yamaha Style'

drz400 safari tank

Does your stock vacuum operated petcock not shut off when your bike is parked? Replace your stock vacuum operated petcock with this manual one. Must be shut off any time the bike is parked for more than a few hours. Fits stock or aftermarket tanks. Plastic tanks may need the hole 'ovalized' to fit the dual standpipes.

Does not fit OEM XR650L metal tank

Petcock, Left-hand - Acerbis

drz400 safari tank

Replacement Acerbis left-hand side fuel tank petcock.

For Acerbis tanks only.

Petcock, Pingel

drz400 safari tank

A popular upgrade from the stock vacuum operated fuel valve. Manually operated. Must be shut off any time the bike is parked for more than a few hours. Fits stock tank or aftermarket tank and has both main and reserve. Fully rebuildable.

Fuel Filter, 1/4" - 90° or Straight

drz400 safari tank

The small size and right angle hose barbs make this filter easier to fit into the small space between your fuel petcock and carburetor. Filter body is only 7/8" diameter. Straight filter is 2" long, 90 degree filter is only 1-5/8" long.

Fuel Filter, 5/16"

drz400 safari tank

This filter is meant for 5/16" fuel lines. Only 1/2" thick it is small enough to fit just about anywhere.

Fuel Filter, Gas Tank

drz400 safari tank

Fuel supplies can be sketchy at times. This filter lives in your tank to trap dirt and debris as it is poured into the tank. Features a custom shaped adapter that fits securely under the gas cap, creating a leak-proof seal. If it stays out of your fuel, it can't get into the carburetor! Created by the filter experts at Twin Air, this filter fits IMS,  Acerbis and Safari brand gas tanks.

Fuel Line Clamp Kit

drz400 safari tank

Ordering new fuel line? How about a set of fresh zinc plated clamps to go with it?

These will be sure your fuel line stays connected. A pack of 8 clamps in 2 sizes to fit most 1/4 or 5/16 fuel hose.

Fuel Line Reducer, 5/16" to 1/4"

drz400 safari tank

Hose reducer to go from 5/16" line down to 1/4" line. Many bikes have 5/16" carburetor spigots but most aftermarket petcocks are 1/4". This solve the problem of mismatched sizes. Solid brass construction. Can be used to route or repair fuel lines, oil lines or air lines. Barbed ends provide a secure fit.

Fuel Line, Premium 1/4"

drz400 safari tank

All of these lines are stronger and more durable than vinyl fuel lines and are resistant to swelling, UV light, as well as hardening and cracking.

Not the cheapest long range tank on the market, but in all honesty not that much more expensive than imported options and you are buying Australian made and owned for your money. The tank fits perfectly, all the parts from the stock tank swap straight across easily and installation is simple. Quality seems really good, the tank is solid and compliments the look of the bike nicely. Hasn't adversely affected the handling either - the bike doesn't feel any top heavier than usual and it isn't too wide between the knees, although it does widen up quickly as you move forward. Not sure of the range yet, should be close to 400km with my gearing at a relaxed pace on gravel - probably less flat out on the black top.

  5. IMS tank or Safari ?

I have previously used the Safari on the SM using the rubber tank mount method, I am now using it in my E with the OEM screw mounts. The E version of mounting makes the tank more secure and the tank moves less. The tank can be mounted on either style of frame as both styles are accounted for in the design.
