Tour of South Bohemia 2023

From 2023-09-07 to 2023-09-10.

Tour of south Bohemia 2023 is an international cycling stage race, which takes place from September 7th to September 10th, 2023 . It is part of the World Cycling Championship and therefore in the category of races of the international bicycle federation UCI 2.2. This is the second most important race and also the longest stage race in road cycling in the Czech Republic. This year will be the tenth year.

What is Tour of south Bohemia?

The Tour of South Bohemia 2023 is an international cycling stage race that will take place from 7 to 10 September 2023. It is part of the Road Cycling World Cup and therefore in the category of UCI 2.2 races. It is the second most important road cycling race in the Czech Republic. This year will be the tenth anniversary edition.

Organiser The race is organized by the RBB Invest Jindřichův Hradec Cycling Club and the town of Jindřichův Hradec

Who can participate According to UCI rule 2.1.005, the race is open to UCI professional continental teams registered in the Czech Republic, UCI continental teams, national teams, regional and club teams. Teams of 4 - 6 members composed of Elite men's category riders are allowed to start. In accordance with article 2.1.006 of the UCI rules, riders of the U23 category may also participate in the race.

Jerseys The race will be run over four stages and will have jerseys based on the Tour de France. That is, yellow for the leading rider, green for the leading rider in the points (sprint) competition, white with red polka dots for the leading man in the climbing competition and white for the leading rider under 23.

Daily program

Day 1: Tabor – Cervena Lhota – Jindrichuv Hradec (34 mi/55 km) In the morning, transfer from your hotel in Prague or Linz to historic Tabor, known as the center of the Hussite movement. Begin your bicycle journey through gently rolling countryside with pine groves and picturesque lakes. Halfway through the trip you'll discover one of the pearls of South Bohemia, the romantic chateau of Cervena Lhota, built on a tiny island in the middle of a lake. In the evening you'll arrive to Jindrichuv Hradec, a historic town with its own dominant castle. Overnight in Jindrichuv Hradec

Day 2: Jindrichuv Hradec – Trebon (34 mi/54 km) Today you'll ride through a countryside of lakes and pine groves. This landscape is full of romantic little nooks, meadows surrounded by forests, and a sandy-bottomed swimming hole. In the afternoon ride to Trebon, the center of Czech fishing as well as a town rich in Renaissance architecture with its own castle. Overnight in Trebon

Day 3: Trebon – Cesky Budejovice (28 mi/45 km) Today will be quite an easy ride, leading first through pine forests and ponds to Hluboka nad Vltavou, arguably the most beautiful castle of the Czech Republic. Don't miss the castle tour!

After lunch, continue on the new smooth trail, Greenway 12, along the Vltava river to České Budejovice, the city that gave the name to the famous Czech beer Budweisser Budvar. We reccommend that you sample the local beer specialities at Masne Kramy restaurant, the flag ship of Budvar Brewery. Overnight in České Budejovice

Day 4: Cesky Budejovice – Cesky Krumlov (18 mi/29 km or 32 mi/52 km) Today there are two options. A relaxing route follows on the main trail, Greenway 12, through the Vltava river valley and picturesque village Zlata Koruna to where you finish in Cesky Krumlov, the pearl of Czech Republic. You can spend the afternoon wandering through the narrow streets, visiting castle museum or just relaxing on the boat trip on the Vltava river.

If 18 mi/30 km of cycling is not enough for you, choose the second option. The route leads through rolling terrain to Holasovice (UNESCO), a village famous for its "village baroque style" houses, and then climbs through Blansky Forest, with the highest peak Klet (3556 ft/1084m), to Cesky Krumlov. Both options offer a possibility of a morning tour of Budvar Brewery. Overnight in Cesky Krumlov

Day 5: Lipno – Vyssi Brod – Dolni Vltavice (26 mi/42 km or 30 mi/48 km) First we take you by van to village Lipno, where you will start your cycling day. The route takes you through the Devil´s Wall Nature Park with its impressive rock formations to Vyssi Brod, with its magnificent monastery. This would be a great place to have lunch.

The relaxing route continues along the right bank of Lipno Lake to Kyselov, where the ferry takes you directly to your hotel in Dolni Vltavice. There are many oportunities for swimming in the lake along the way.

If you feel like a longer ride, from Vyssi Brod you can continue through more hilly terrain along the Czech - Austrian border through abandoned villages Kaplicky and Krasne Pole to Svaty Tomas and Vitkuv Kamen, from which you can enjoy an amazing view of the whole southern part of Sumava National Park and the Lipno Lake. From here it is only 6 mi/11 km descent to the ferry. Overnight in Dolni Vltavice

Day 6: Dolni Vltavice Loop (28 mi/44 km) You can tailor this day to your own preferences. The route leads along the Schwarzenberg Canal, a technical monument to lumber transport, and you can decide for yourself how long you wish to bike. Either you climb the highest peak of Sumava National Park, Plechy (4541 ft/1348m), or after swimming in the Lipno Lake, you wander down to the cafe. Either way it will be a memorable day! Overnight in Dolni Vltavice

Day 7: Dolni Vltavice – Cesky Krumlov (24 mi/38 km) Today you have the option to appreciate the virgin landscape of Sumava and Lipno Lake from the deck of a catamaran. Enjoy your sailing on the lake! Then continue on bike across the restricted area of Boletice, stop off at the newly reconstructed church of St. Mikulas, and continue to Cesky Krumlov, where you spend the last night of your trip. Overnight in Cesky Krumlov

Day 8: Cesky Krumlov Enjoy your last day in Cesky Krumlov and choose from these different activities: boat trip on Vltava river, guided tour of the Eggenberg brewery, visit to a castle. Transfer back to Prague or Linz later that afternoon.

Surface and terrain

The tour consists of relaxed cycling with occasional hills and distances up to 35 mi/55 km per day.

The tour follows cycle routes through rolling hills around Jindrichuv Hradec, lowlands around the lakes of Trebon, moderate hills of Blansky les, Sumava National Park, Lake Lipno and Cesky Krumlov.

On this tour, 41% of the riding is on roads shared with traffic, 53% on quiet roads (with little or no traffic) and 6% on dedicated bike paths.

Simply fabulous.

We chose the unguided tour but the directions were excellent (when we followed them) with both text and photos to guide us. The hotels were wonderful and alway located in the Old Town Square. The breakfasts were great, too. And all the extras that Pter Janota threw in couldn't have been more fun or informative. Petr was fun and funny and very smart and we couldn't have been more impressed by his support on the road and his bike tour operation. His recommendations for restaurants in Czecky Krumlov (Papas) were great.

Bike from Prague to Vienna or Salzburg! (or close enough)

This company knows exactly what it is doing and makes a carefree adventure of it all. We took the self-guided, electric bike tour and every time we wondered about a particular detail, we learned that they had already thought of it and handled it all. Biking route instructions were very precise and helpful (this tour runs just a small amount of time in Austria and their biking signs are not as precise as Czech Rep, no fault of the tour operator). The countryside was so gorgeous that we kept thinking it all must be fake. But 20 minutes later, we would find another dream scene. Each day was a joy and we would recommend it all very highly. Found fantastic restaurants as well. Hats off to Petr J in Czech Republic. He is the local tour operator and is top notch in all respects.

Living life in true sense

Hi I, along with my friend, had been on ' South of Bohemia' self guided tour last July. It was our first experience of this kind. And it was an absolutely satisfying tour. Few basic points I would like to point out being a first timer- When they are saying the difficulty level to ' moderate' they are correct. Whatever services they have committed, they have complied with the same. Very precise route maps/ guidelines/ photos/ distances had been provided. We're always available for any kind of help, in case needed. Hotels were absolutely perfect. Depending upon the cycling practice/ experience that you have, n to enjoy a little adventure with leisure as well, I would certainly recommend this tour.

XIII. South Bohemia Classic 2022

The International one-hundredth rally of classic and sports cars is enjoying growing popularity year by year. Combining the elegance of classic cars with female beauty, masculine charm, scenic South Bohemian landscape and its famous monuments, it will attract almost 150 crews from the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, France, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, USA or the Russia.

South Bohemia Classic is a social event for car lovers with a unique sports experience. However, neither reaching the highest speed, nor handling the corners is what matters. The winner of the event will be decided by a perfect teamwork between the driver and his co-driver during the special tests in which the time is measured with the accuracy of one hundredth of a second.

A ride along the winding South Bohemian roads in the virgin nature is a yearly challenge for almost three hundred enthusiastic owners of classic cars and shiny sports cars from many countries of Europe.

Did You Know: Iron Maiden's 747 Once Collided With A Ground Tug

• Iron Maiden's customized Boeing 747, "Ed Force One," facilitated transporting large music equipment, enhancing stage production.
• The band had to replace portside engines and made alternative transport arrangements after a plane accident in South America.
• Despite challenges, Iron Maiden continues its touring legacy and plans for shows in Europe, Mexico, and the U.S. from May 2022.

Iron Maiden is a heavy metal band founded by bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris on December 25, 1975, in East London. The English band became a household name and the powerhouse of heavy metal performances in concerts worldwide. The band used two aBoeing aircraft, primarily for their world tours. Around 2009, Iron Maiden commissioned a former Astraeus Airlines Boeing 757 and converted it into a combi configuration.

In 2016, the band upgraded to a Boeing 747-400 jumbo-jet, supplied by Air Atlanta Icelandic. The aircraft once collided with a ground tug, forcing Iron Maiden to make alternative transport arrangements. The incident happened on their 2016 tour to promote their new album "The Book of Souls." Named "Ed Force One" after a call in by fans, the aircraft was the dream of Iron Maiden lead vocalist Bruce Dickinson who had ambitions to fly the band and all its equipment to gigs around the world.

Ed Force One

The aircraft was named "Ed Force One" by the fans after a competition on the band's website. The aircraft was flown by the former commercial airline pilot for Astraeus, Bruce Dickinson. The Boeing 747-400 was highly customized to allow additional space for their music equipment. Having a private aircraft allowed the band and crew to perform at destinations which were previously deemed unreachable due to logistics.

The jumbo jet could carry large and oversized pieces of music equipment, providing flexibility for stage production at concert sites. It was painted in the special Iron Maiden livery that had received positive feedback from customers.

Ed Force One: The Story Of The Iron Maiden Boeing 747 Then And Now

The boeing 747-400 used to belong to air france.

Before obtaining a Boeing 747-400 from a charter company, Air Atlanta Icelandic, Iron Maiden flew Boeing 757-200s to all their concerts. Before joining Air Atlanta Icelandic, the now specially adapted 747 belonged to Air France. Now on the South American leg of the tour, the band was in Santiago, Chile, when the accident happened on March 12, 2016.

The aircraft was in the process of being moved for refueling by a tow tug when the steering pin connecting the plane to the tug became disengaged. When the tug tried to turn the aircraft, the plane impacted the tug, causing significant damage to its port side engines. Two Chilean ground workers were also injured but later made a full recovery.

According to a statement by Iron Maiden ,

"Ed Force One was this morning tethered to a tow truck to be taken for refuelling prior to flying over the Andes to Cordoba for the next show. On moving the steering pin that is part of the mechanism that connects the ground tug to the aircraft seemingly fell out. On making a turn the aircraft had no steering and collided with the ground tug badly damaging the undercarriage, two of the aircrafts engines and injuring two ground tug operators, both of whom have been taken to hospital."

What Happened To The Iron Maiden Boeing 747?

Both port side engines needed to be replaced.

Upon inspection, it was decided that both port-side engines would need to be replaced to make the aircraft airworthy. To collect the necessary parts from Germany, the UK, and Saudi Arabia, the "Ed Force One" team chartered a 747-400F from Luxembourg's Cargolux.

The engines were transported overland from Hannover to Luxemburg. The tooling was flown from Jeddah to Stansted, where the Cargolux 747 would stop to pick up the thrust reversers and load the equipment from Saudi Arabia before departing for Chile. After only three hours on the ground, the Cargolux jumbo jet was ready for the 15-hour flight to Santiago.

A team of mechanics and engineers from Air Atlanta Icelandic was already in place at Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (SCL). The team was determined to get the job done as soon as possible and get "Ed Force One" back in the air. Less than ten days after the accident, "Ed Force One" was ready to rejoin the tour, flying to Brasilia to pick up the band and take them to their next concert in Fortaleza.

Iron Maiden's name was inspired by the Alexandre Dumas novel "The man in the Iron Mask," which reminded Harris of the Middle Ages iron maiden torture device large enough to enclose a human being.

After decades of success, Iron Maiden is still touring today but canceled all concerts in 2021 due to COVID-19. In May 2022, Iron Maiden continued its "Legacy Of The Beast World Tour "with shows first in Europe before flying to Mexico and the United States in September. Sadly, Bruce Dickinson has retired from flying "Ed Force One" even though, unlike commercial pilots, there is no mandate that private pilots need to retire at age 65.
