Caitlin Clark didn’t check all the boxes to make the 12-player Team USA roster for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

That is according to selection committee chair Jen Rizzotti, who explained the decision came down to basketball criteria — and not the fame and attention Clark would bring to the games this summer.

“Here’s the basketball criteria that we were given as a committee and how do we evaluate our players based on that?” Rizzotti told The Associated Press in an interview published on Tuesday, the day USA Basketball released the official roster. “And when you base your decision on criteria, there were other players that were harder to cut because they checked a lot more boxes. Then sometimes it comes down to position, style of play for [coach] Cheryl [Reeve] and then sometimes a vote.

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) reacts after her third foul against the Connecticut Sun in the second quarter at Mohegan Sun Arena on June 10, 2024.

“It would be irresponsible for us to talk about her in a way other than how she would impact the play of the team because it wasn’t the purview of our committee to decide how many people would watch or how many people would root for the U.S. It was our purview to create the best team we could for Cheryl.”

The selection committee chooses the 2024 USA Women’s National Team based on criteria that includes playing ability, position played and adaptability to the international game.

Coach Jennifer Rizzotti, center, works with players on the USA Basketball Women's 3x3 national team, Monday, Oct. 31, 2022, in Miami Lakes, Fla.

The roster — which features seven players from the group that won gold in Tokyo — includes: WNBA MVPs, future Hall of Famers and All-Stars: Diana Taurasi (Mercury), A’ja Wilson (Aces), Breanna Stewart (Liberty), Alyssa Thomas (Sun), Jewell Loyd (Storm), Napheesa Collier (Lynx), Kelsey Plum (Aces), Jackie Young (Aces), Brittney Griner (Mercury), Kahleah Copper (Mercury), Sabrina Ionescu (Liberty) and Chelsea Gray (Aces).

The team will compete for a eighth straight gold medal for the Americans.

Clark, along with the Connecticut Sun’s Brionna Jones, are on top of the alternates list, should Team USA need a replacement, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported on Monday.

It also came down to senior national team experience, which Clark has yet to earn — and that is due to her going from college straight to the pros.

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) moves the ball against Connecticut Sun guard DiJonai Carrington (21) in the first quarter at Mohegan Sun Arena on June 10, 2024.

Clark was the only collegiate athlete invited to the Team USA 14-player training camp in April, but she was unable to attend the final Olympics camp as she and the Hawkeyes advanced to the Final Four in the NCAA tournament — with Iowa ultimately  coming up short against South Carolina  in the national championship game.

A week later, Clark went on to become the No. 1 overall pick by the Fever in the 2024 WNBA Draft on April 15.

The former All-American point guard — who became the NCAA’s Division I all-time leading scorer for men and women during her senior year at Iowa — is acclimating to the pro level and bringing millions of fans along for the ride.

Indiana Fever's Caitlin Clark scores career high 30 points in win over Washington Mystics.

Clark’s celebrity has helped boost viewership and revenue for the WNBA, which opened the 2024 season with its highest attendance in 26 years and the most-watched games ever on National TV, the league said in a press release.

The WNBA world was at a crossroads when Clark’s name was not on the roster, which leaked over the weekend.

Many believed Team USA missed out on a major marketing opportunity to bring more viewers and popularity to the Summer Games.

“It’s a great mix of talent across the board in terms of individual skill sets,” USA Basketball CEO Jim Tooley said. “We have veterans, newcomers and those in the middle. Good perspective and continuity is such an important thing and is why we’ve been successful in the Olympics.

“She’s certainly going to continue to get better and better,” Tooley said. “Really hope that she’s a big part of our future going forward.”

The 22-year-old Clark praised USA Basketball and its players while taking questions from reporters during practice Sunday.

“I didn’t have time to go to a training camp and obviously it was a quick turnaround to come here [to Indiana],”  Clark said.  “So it’s good motivation for us and we all know how talented that team is.”

Clark explained that it would be a “great opportunity” if Team USA were to call her if they needed a replacement.

“I think it would be a great opportunity, a lot of ‘ifs,’”  she said . “My main focus is on the Fever, like that’s what it is. If USA Basketball needs something, you know, I have a great relationship with them but the 12 they have selected are really, really great players.”

The 2024 Paris Olympics will begin on July 26 and run through August 11.

USA Basketball: It would be 'irresponsible' to put Caitlin Clark on Olympic team for marketing reasons

The roster for the 2024 US Olympic women's basketball team was released on Tuesday, and as was expected, Caitlin Clark 's name wasn't on it. Reports had surfaced Saturday that Clark wouldn't be competing for USA Basketball at the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Selection committee chair Jen Rizzotti, who is also president of the Connecticut Sun and head coach of the US women's 3x3 team, commented about Clark being left off the roster, responding specifically to criticism that USA Basketball is missing a chance to market and grow the WNBA by leaving Clark at home.

“It would be irresponsible for us to talk about [Clark] in a way other than how she would impact the play of the team,” Rizzotti said via the AP. “Because it wasn’t the purview of our committee to decide how many people would watch or how many people would root for the U.S. It was our purview to create the best team we could for Cheryl [Reeve, head coach].”

Clark, a rookie with no international experience whatsoever, responded like a champ when she was asked about missing the roster, saying she hopes she'll be able to get to the Olympics "one day." She knows she'll have more chances in the future, and she'll be ready for them when they come along.

But ESPN sports personalities (and noted yellers) Stephen A. Smith and Shannon Sharpe went off on USA Basketball when they found out Clark wasn't on the roster, complaining that the organization wasn't serious about growing the WNBA if they're leaving off the most popular women's basketball player in the country.

Stephen A. Smith on Caitlin Clark being left off Team USA: "This is about what I will personally label 'The Idiocy of Team USA Women's Basketball.' How dare you make this decision. It's stupid. "Caitlin Clark does not deserve a spot ahead of any of the players on this roster --… pic.twitter.com/BqM0AWdMZ6 — Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) June 10, 2024
Shannon Sharpe on Caitlin Clark being left off of Team USA: "Are we really trying to grow the game? Because this is the most popular women's basketball player in the world and it ain't close... So are we really trying to grow the game? Is that what we're really trying to do? Or… pic.twitter.com/XwSdruLuG9 — Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) June 10, 2024

While marketing the WNBA is an admirable goal, as Rizzotti said, it is in no way the goal of USA Basketball. Their goal is to put together the best team possible so they can win medals, trophies, and championships around the world. They may use WNBA players, but they are a separate organization from the WNBA. If the different names didn't flag that for Smith and Sharpe, 15 seconds of research would have led them to that conclusion. Hopefully that's not too much time for them to spend preparing for their next WNBA segment.

Diana Taurasi headlines veteran US women's basketball team for Paris Olympics

We already knew who isn't on the U.S. women's basketball team roster for the Paris Olympics. Now we know who is.

Diana Taurasi was chosen for a record sixth consecutive Olympic team and will lead a veteran squad as the U.S. women try and win their eighth gold medal in a row. For only the second time in U.S. history, each of the 12 players on the roster has won gold at either the Olympics or FIBA World Cup.

"We tried to make this a basketball decision and we tried to give (U.S. coach Cheryl Reeve) the best team that included experience, depth, skill and confidence we were going to be able to win the gold medal," Jen Rizzotti, chair of the women's national team committee for USA Basketball, told USA TODAY Sports after the roster was announced Tuesday morning.

"Twelve players isn’t a lot," Rizzotti added. "We wanted to make sure, without knowing how Cheryl would use everybody completely, we wanted to make sure we gave her essentially two starting lineups and a lot of great options."

Combined, the team of Taurasi, Napheesa Collier, Kahleah Copper, Chelsea Gray, Brittney Griner, Sabrina Ionescu, Jewell Loyd, Kelsey Plum, Breanna Stewart, Alyssa Thomas, A'Ja Wilson and Jackie Young have 15 Olympic gold medals and 18 FIBA World Cup titles. There are eight WNBA champions and three WNBA MVPs, including the reigning MVP, Stewart.

Copper, Ionescu and Thomas are the only Olympic rookies. Plum and Young won gold as part of the 3x3 team in Tokyo.

The committee evaluated players over the past three years, at both training camps and competitions like the 2022 World Cup and the Olympic qualifying tournament in February. There were 11 criteria used in making the roster selections: U.S. citizenship, availability, position, playing ability, versatility to play other positions, coachability, attitude, adaptability to team concept, leadership, adaptability to international game and likelihood of contributing to success of team.

While Reeve was asked for her input, Rizzotti said roster decisions were made by the committee, which also included South Carolina coach Dawn Staley, who led the U.S. women to gold in Tokyo; Bethany Donaphin, head of league operations for the WNBA; Dan Padover, general manager of the Atlanta Dream; and athlete representatives Seimone Augustus and DeLisha Milton-Jones.

Rizzotti said the committee leaned heavily on Staley's experiences in Tokyo, as well as those of Staley, Augustus and Milton-Jones, all of whom played on Olympic teams.

"There are times I can remember saying, 'Dawn, how did you feel in that moment in Tokyo? What would you have preferred in terms of roster composition? What do you think are going to be Cheryl’s greatest challenges?'" Rizzotti recalled.

"They understand the stakes, understand the commitment that went into being on those teams," Rizzotti said, referring to Staley, Augustus and Milton-Jones. "They understand the highs of winning gold medals and lows of being cuts."

The Olympic team will play the WNBA All-Stars on July 20 in Phoenix, a game that will be broadcast on ESPN, before heading to London to play Germany on July 23. The U.S. women open the Paris Olympics against Japan, the silver medalist in Tokyo, on July 29, followed by games against Belgium (Aug. 1) and Germany (Aug. 4). The knockout rounds begin Aug. 7.

Where's Caitlin Clark?

There is no tougher team in women's basketball to make than the U.S. women's team. It's so challenging and competitive that Caitlin Clark, the WNBA rookie who shattered numerous college records before being drafted No. 1 overall in mid April, did not make the cut.

"I know it’s the most competitive team in the world,"  Clark said Sunday , after news leaked that she had not made the team. "… Honestly, no disappointment."

The 22-year-old Clark is wildly popular and has helped fuel explosive interest in the women's game . While some have suggested that alone should have earned her a rare spot as a rookie on the Olympic team, the priority is winning gold and Clark is simply not among the best U.S. players right now.

"There were definitely some unique circumstances surrounding Caitlin, but at the end of the day, I'm proud our committee stayed honed in on the selection criteria," Rizzotti said. "None of that criteria talked about TV viewership or marketability."

Clark leads the WNBA in both total turnovers (70) and turnovers per game (5.4). She's second in the league with 36 3-pointers, but ranks 29th in shooting percentage from deep. Clark and most of Indiana's other starters also were benched in the second half of the Indiana Fever's loss to the Connecticut Sun on Monday night, with coach Christie Sides saying you can't "coach effort."

Another factor in Clark not making the Paris squad is she has never played with the senior national team so she does not know coach Cheryl Reeve's system or been able to develop timing and chemistry with the other players. No small thing when an Olympic title is on the line and a buzzer-beater win over Belgium is still fresh in the minds of the U.S. team.

Tauarasi and Stewart are the most recent players to make the Olympic team as rookies, playing in the 2004 and 2016 Olympics, respectively. Both, however, did have previous senior national team experience: Taurasi had played in 13 exhibition games before making her Olympic debut, and Stewart had been with the senior national team for both the 2014 World Cup and the 2015 Pan American games.

Clark was invited to the most recent training camp , the last one before the roster was selected, but was unable to participate. As it has been the last few years, the training camp was held the same weekend as the Final Four and Clark was taking Iowa to its second consecutive NCAA title game.

Is Clark an alternate?

USA Basketball didn't name any alternates. However any player in the Olympic pool, as Clark is, would be eligible to be considered if someone gets hurt or cannot play for other reasons.

But alternates would be chosen based on the position that needs to be filled. So if a center or forward gets hurt, Clark would probably not be considered. Or wouldn't be among the first players considered. If it's a guard, however, Clark could be in line to replace that player.

One of the bigger questions surrounds the status of Chelsea Gray, who was injured during the WNBA Finals last season and has yet to play for the Las Vegas Aces. But Rizzotti said the committee was in contact with both Gray and the Aces, and "felt very confident" she'll be ready to play.

If healthy, Gray is particularly critical to the U.S. roster. She is the successor to longtime point guard Sue Bird, who helped the U.S. women win five gold medals before retiring after Tokyo. As part of the U.S. team in Tokyo and at the 2022 World Cup, Gray is also very familiar with the international game.

"With her proven track record and her being the best point guard in the world, we felt she was an important (piece)," Rizzotti said.

Caitlin Clark sidelined from women's Olympic basketball team: reports

  • Caitlin Clark, guard for the Indiana Fever, is the top US woman rookie in the WNBA.
  • Despite being invited to the national team's training camp, she won't be headed to the Olympics.
  • It's unclear why she was sidelined from the Olympic team this year.

Insider Today

Caitlin Clark , the top female rookie basketball player in the US, has been snubbed from the women's Olympic team, according to multiple reports.

The Wall Street Journal on Saturday reported Clark, a superstar player who recently inked a $28 million, eight-year Nike deal , was left off of the 12-player team roster headed to the Paris Olympics in July. The outlet reported the selection committee appeared to favor players with more professional experience.

The former Iowa Hawkeyes star told AP in April that playing for the US Olympic 5×5 team was "the goal and the dream. To play with the best in the world and against the best in the world, you can't script it better than that."

Related stories

Clark has not publicly commented on the reports.

It remains unclear why the rookie Indiana Fever guard — who was invited to the national team's training camp in April but could not attend due to scheduling conflicts with the NCAA tournament — didn't make the Olympic team.

USA Today, citing two US basketball veterans with decades of experience in the women's game, reported that part of the selection committee's decision was concern for how Clark's fans would react to her receiving limited playing time on the stacked roaster.

"If true, that would be an extraordinary admission of the existence of real tension that the old guard of women's basketball harbors for this multimillion-dollar sensation ," columnist Christine Brennan wrote.

The Journal reported 41-year-old Diana Taurasi, who has won five Olympic gold medals, as well as Chelsea Gray, Jewell Loyd, Kelsey Plum, and Jackie Young — all of whom have played at the Olympics before — and Sabrina Ionescu, a two-time WNBA All-Star, will represent the US at the Olympics this year.

Representatives for Clark and the US Women's Basketball Team did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.

Caitlin Clark marketing boom is celebrated but also draws questions of race and equity

Women’s basketball has never seen anything like Caitlin Clark , the sweet-shooting rookie guard for the WNBA’s Indiana Fever. She’s Taylor Swift with a jump shot, Mia Hamm in a singlet; a figure so transcendent she is changing her profession.

More than 55,000 people showed up to watch her play a practice game last fall and her final college game drew 24 million TV viewers this spring. That’s 3 1/2 times larger than the audience for Serena Williams’ final tennis match .

More than 3 million people tuned in on ESPN just to watch her get drafted . After that, Nike signed her to the most lucrative sponsorship deal in women’s basketball history, a $28-million agreement that includes a signature shoe. Michael Jordan’s first deal with Nike was worth less than a tenth of that.

So what makes the pony-tailed Clark, just 22, so special? Sure, she’s the leading scorer in women’s college basketball history, but how many people have heard of Lynette Woodard, the woman she passed? And for all of her individual accomplishments, she has never won a state or national team title.

What really makes her stand out is the fact she almost blends in. Despite her talents, at 6 feet and a slender 152 pounds she’s one of the smallest players in the WNBA.

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark drives to the basket under pressure from New York Liberty forward Betnijah Laney-Hamilton

“She looks like your mom,” said Ann Bastianelli, a professor of marketing at Indiana University and a former college basketball player. “These women who are well over six feet and strong and athletic and determined and all of these other sorts of things, I think are scary to lots of men and I think they would be scary to lots of people who have very firm and rigid views of gender and sexual stereotypes.”

And while Clark passes and shoots with laser-like precision the way NBA star Stephen Curry does, she makes it look so easy that everyone thinks they can do it.

“People love Steph Curry because he’s the Everyman,” said Jemele Hill, an Emmy-winning sports journalist and former ESPN personality. “Caitlin Clark has the same relatability.”

But Clark, who will lead the Fever against the Sparks on Friday at Crypto.com Arena , also stands out for who she’s not. In a league in which approximately 70% of the players are Black, nearly a third identify as LGBTQ and most come from urban environments, Clark is white, straight and from Iowa.

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark speaks during a news conference before a game against the New York Liberty.

And that sets her apart even more than her shooting skills.

“We would all be very naive if we didn’t say race and her sexuality played a role in her popularity,” said Hill, now a contributing writer at the Atlantic and host of the “Jemele Hill is Unbothered” podcast. “While so many people are happy for Caitlin’s success — including the players; this has had such an enormous impact on the game — there is a part of it that is a little problematic because of what it says about the worth and the marketability of the players who are already there.”

Nicole Melton, co-director of the Laboratory for Inclusion and Diversity in Sport at the University of Massachusetts, agrees.

“Cailtin fits a very comfortable narrative for a lot of people in the United States,” she said. “She comes from the heartland. She’s an amazing talent. She’s also a white, straight woman, right? There’s not a lot of things that would make people feel uncomfortable with that person being successful.”

Granderson: Caitlin Clark is having a moment in women’s basketball. She shouldn’t be the only one

Women’s basketball is catching more interest than usual thanks to the star of the NCAA tournament. What would it take to hold Americans’ attention?

April 1, 2024

Except, maybe, in some WNBA locker rooms. For veteran players who have struggled for years with low pay, commercial travel and little media coverage, the attention and riches showered on Clark, who has played only three professional games, has fueled some bitterness. For them, there is more than just basketball at play and their issue isn’t with Clark, but rather the hype machine that has beatified her.

“A lot of people may say it’s not about Black and white, but to me, it is,” Las Vegas forward A’ja Wilson, a two-time WNBA champion and two-time MVP, told the Associated Press .

“You can be top-notch at what you are as a Black woman, but yet maybe that’s something that people don’t want to see. They don’t see it as marketable, so it doesn’t matter how hard I work. It doesn’t matter what we all do as Black women, we’re still going to be swept underneath the rug. That’s why it boils my blood when people say it’s not about race because it is.”

Asked about Wilson’s comments, Clark chose to deflect the criticism and talk instead about the big picture.

“There’s opportunities for every single player in women’s basketball,” she said. “The more opportunities we can give across the board, that’s what’s going to elevate women’s basketball.”

Fans watch Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark warm up for the team's game against the New York Liberty on Thursday.

Yet it’s because of players like Wilson that Clark is joining a league primed for explosive growth. The WNBA’s 36 million unique TV viewers in 2023 marked a 27% increase from the previous season while revenue was up about $200 million. And whether by coincidence or coordination, a month after Clark joined the league, commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced teams would be traveling by charter flights this season .

If Clark delivers the WNBA the kind of record-breaking TV audiences she brought to college basketball, that could mean even more money for a league in the final year of its current broadcast deal.

“The boom of social media, there’s more accessibility and visibility. And so when you have a phenom like Caitlin Clark, who is kind of a product of that generation, it can certainly bring a lot of great attention,” said Seattle Storm forward Nneka Ogwumike, who is also president of the players’ association.

That, in turn, will mean higher pay and better working conditions for every WNBA player. And while the players welcome that, Hill said it hasn’t stopped many from wondering why talented, charismatic women such as Brittney Griner, Candace Parker and Maya Moore didn’t get the same media attention when they took the league by storm.

Sparks forward Candace Parker grabs a rebound against the Chicago Sky during the 2016 WNBA playoffs.

“It’s not jealousy. It’s just the fact that in our society, Black women are often erased from the picture,” Hill said. “While Caitlin Clark’s success should be widely celebrated, there are various points where we have seen dynamic phenoms and how they have been able to popularize the game. It’s just that, for whatever reason, could be race, could be gender, could be a myriad of factors, that same marketing muscle that seems very intentional about making sure that Caitlyn Clark is a superstar was missing for them.

“Coke and Pepsi and all these other brands didn’t come running for Cheryl Miller. So I think it’s OK to have multiple conversations at once. There’s plenty of room to highlight and celebrate Caitlin Clark’s popularity while also discussing ways in which to not erase Black women from a league that they have built and continue to build.”

There is evidence to suggest that erasure is real. Four years ago, Melton and Risa Isard, a research fellow with the Laboratory of Inclusion and Diversity, counted each mention of an active WNBA player in more than 550 online articles from ESPN, Sports Illustrated and CBS Sports and found that Black players received significantly less coverage.

Wilson, for example, who is Black and was the league’s MVP, received half as much coverage as rookie Sabrina Ionescu, the No. 1 draft pick who is white and played only three games that season.

Plaschke: Gritty Sparks bring new hope and winning effort during their season opening loss

The Sparks played formidable defense, worked well as a team and showed signs they can win a lot of games despite dropping their season opener.

May 16, 2024

“I do think that’s shifting, but it’s still there. It’s still an undercurrent,” Melton said. “[Clark] kind of stands on the shoulders of all those women that came before, that have been building this narrative and making people realize how great women’s sport is, especially basketball.”

Melton attended Clark’s sold-out WNBA debut, in which she scored 20 points but committed 10 turnovers in a 21-point loss to the Connecticut Sun. Clark scored only nine points in her second game, the Fever’s home opener, and her team suffered a 36-point loss to the New York Liberty. Clark bounced back with 22 points during an 11-point loss to the Liberty on Saturday.

Melton found the crowd at Clark’s first WNBA game to be far more diverse than the league’s media coverage.

“It was just an amazing environment,” she said. “You had different races, different genders, different sexual orientations. It was a whole melting pot of different people from different walks of life.”

It was, in fact, the kind of diverse crowd the WNBA needs to succeed. And while many of those people had come to watch Clark, they left just as impressed with the play of Connecticut’s Alyssa Thomas, who had a league-record 12 th triple-double, and DeWanna Bonner, who moved into fifth place on the league’s all-time scoring list. Ultimately that’s the kind of role the WNBA and its players are hoping Clark will play: a box-office draw who introduces new fans to great talents they might have never heard of.

Seattle Storm forward Nneka Ogwumike runs on the court before a game against the Minnesota Lynx on May 14.

“A lot of people have a gateway into women’s basketball right now. And that is going to give them an opportunity to not only come for what they’re interested in, but also to find something to discover something that they haven’t before,” Ogwumike said. “But however people get interested in women’s basketball, they’re also now going to discover that there’s definitely more than one person that can do a few things in this league that that makes our league as amazing as it is.”

In the meantime, Clark, the league’s poster girl, is being burned by the intense glare of a spotlight she never wanted. All she ever wanted to do was play basketball yet now, like Taylor Swift, she finds herself at the center of political conversations she didn’t start, but ones that are long overdue.

“In that regard, I feel bad for Caitlin Clark because she didn’t ask for any of that,” Hill said.

But, Hill continued, “her success in forcing accountability. And I think that’s a great thing. Now the WNBA has to evaluate everything they do. While it’s shameful that they waited until they got the right player to start behaving in ways they could have been doing all along, the point is that her presence is going to force a level of accountability in the sport that wasn’t always there.”

Coordinates of elektrostal in degrees and decimal minutes, utm coordinates of elektrostal, geographic coordinate systems.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
