best nile river cruise boats

Many thanks for great information!

best nile river cruise boats

Based on the review here, we booked on the Sonesta Moon Goddess March, 2023. We were disappointed. The rooms were indeed classic and comfortable. The carpets in the hall were old and stained. The HVAC systems in the room did not work properly despite engineering’s best efforts. Hot water was often hard to come by. The most disappointing element was the food. This was served buffet style, and almost never maintained hot. It was as if I had returned to my high school cafeteria. The staff were attentive and tried to please.

The review above does not reflect on the current state of affairs.

19 of the best Nile cruises for 2024

Discover egypt’s past on a voyage along the world’s longest river with one of these unforgettable nile cruises.

Traditional felucca boats on the Nile at Luxor

S ailing the River Nile is a bucket-list experience. Since the first tourists travelled down the river in 1869, it has attracted visitors enthralled by Egypt’s pharaohs, prophets and pyramids. The world’s longest river flows through 11 African countries for 4,100 miles before spilling out into the Mediterranean, but it’s the Upper Nile, which snakes through southern Egypt, that offers the most cruise itineraries. These visit some of the country’s famous ruins and archaeological discoveries, including the Valley of the Kings, Luxor, Aswan and the Temple of Horus. Cruises operate year-round but sailings between October and May will avoid scorching summer temperatures. Whether you choose to sail on a modern cruise ship, a restored paddle steamer or even a traditional two-masted dahabiya, these are some of the best Nile cruises and itineraries for this journey of a lifetime.

1. G Adventures: Pyramids, Temples & the Nile

A traditional dahabiya cruises the Nile at sunset

Best for a dahabiya experience Leave the crowded ports to the oversized ships and opt for a more serene sailing with G Adventures. Its ten-day Egypt: Pyramids, Temples & the Nile itinerary includes four nights in Cairo and five on board a traditional dahabiya, which has no engine so you can sit back and listen to the sounds of the waves. With just ten cabins, it can dock at small sites close to villages for a more authentic experience. These include a visit to a nonprofit charity working with young people in the West Bank, a barbeque on a remote island in the middle of the Nile and a trip to Nubian village for mint tea with a local family.

This ship has 56 deluxe cabins and two suites, and all have oversized balconies to watch the world sail by. Treats on board include free use of a sauna and steam room, complimentary wi-fi, barbecue lunches and dinners on the sun deck, a library and welcome amenities including a fruit basket and canapés. Guests can join an Egyptian cooking class, use a telescope to stargaze or attend a lecture by an Egyptologist. Ten-day Taste of Egypt itineraries feature five nights in Cairo, including lunches in local restaurants, trips to the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Aswan High Dam, and an optional dinner cruise with live music and belly dancing.

The 12-day tour includes seven nights on the MS Nile Plaza with its restaurant, bar and sundeck, two and a half days of free time and even a VIP transfer from your home for your flight to Cairo. A cabin on MS Darakum

Best for watching the world go by Those who like to take the long route and stay on a boat for the duration of their Egyptian adventure in Egypt will enjoy a cruise on the 52-cabin MS Darakum. Thanks to its very low draft, it is one of the few vessels that can sail from Cairo to Luxor. After an intoxicating few days in the capital, exploring its markets, mosques and ancient wonders, it’s time to travel south. The beauty of covering a much longer distance than a traditional Nile cruise is the extra time it allows to simply sit and watch the world go by. Riviera Travel’s Wonders of the Nile: Cairo to Luxor itinerary is sprinkled with long and leisurely sailing days where there’s little to do except relax on the sun deck and gaze out at the small farms and date plantations, before retreating inside to attend the fascinating onboard lectures.

As well as all the usual big hitters, there are plenty of offbeat options that make this an eye-opening choice for the curious traveller. 10. SS Sudan: On the River Nile

SS Sudan

Best for Agatha Christie lovers One of the most historic and atmospheric vessels to ply the Nile’s waters, this celebrated 19th-century steamer once welcomed Agatha Christie aboard. It is widely believed that it was that trip in 1933, accompanying her husband on an archaeological mission, which paved the way for one of her most accomplished murder mysteries. Following Kenneth Branagh’s 2022 adaptation of Death on the Nile , the SS Sudan is the perfect ship for fans of the Queen of Crime; there are cabins named after Christie and her character Hercule Poirot. The boat exudes opulent period charm, from the teak decks and parquet flooring to the brass bed frames in many of the rooms. Guests also have exclusive access to a network of expert archaeologists who will help bring the historical ruins to life.

11. SS Misr: Timeless Nile

SS Misr

Best for traditionalists Misr, which means “Egypt” in Arabic, is a propeller steamer that has long enjoyed a romance with this country. Built in Preston in 1918 by the Royal Navy, in 1938 it was converted into a luxury yacht that played host to King Farouk, the country’s penultimate monarch. The vessel has now been fully restored to its former glory, and its 12 and 14-night trips are known for celebrating local food — there’s a rather regal feeling inside the main Marasem restaurant, with framed photos of past royalty dotted about and waiters smartly dressed in attire inspired by the glory days of Farouk. The food is largely international but local flavours are celebrated in dishes such as bessara, a local dip made from fava beans.

13. La Flaneuse du Nil: traditional-style sailing

La Flaneuse du Nil

Best for return visitors For those who have already sailed the Nile and may be looking for something different, La Flaneuse du Nil is a tempting option. While most boats travel north from Aswan towards Luxor, this intimate five-day cruise heads south into Lake Nasser bound for the rock-cut temples of Abu Simbel. Powered by sails and tugs, just like the original dahabiyas that were once a regular sight on the waterway, this cosy vessel showcases the subtle beauty of the vast man-made reservoir that straddles Egypt’s border with Sudan. The boat sails at a leisurely pace, with stops for lake swims, sunset hikes and solitary mornings on quiet beaches, as well as guided trips to some of the most impressive ancient wonders Egypt has to explore.

14. Sanctuary Sun Boat III: luxury cruise

Sanctuary Sun Boat III

Best for fun on the river An extremely attractive boat, and one of the few vessels to (occasionally) cruise from Cairo to Aswan, the Sanctuary Sun Boat III takes its inspiration from the glamour of the 1920s and 1930s. Think ecru tones, four-poster beds draped in the finest Egyptian linen and entertainment in the form of belly dancers and whirling dervishes. There are modern touches, too, with air conditioning and a swimming pool on the Cleopatra Oasis sundeck: the perfect spot on which to sip a hibiscus juice and watch the world go by.

The sun-deck bar is a top spot to mingle over cocktails with newfound friends and enjoy barbecues. The supplement-free solo itineraries take in a 12-night Nile cruise, with included shore trips to the Temple of Horus, Valley of the Kings, High Dam and temples of Karnak and Luxor. At the end of the cruise you’ll fly and flop with a couple of days of relaxation in the Red Sea resort of Hurghada. The tour operator also uses the vessel for its escorted group tours on the Nile.

Sonesta Dahabeya Amirat

Best for groups You can sail the Nile in style on this twin-masted dahabiya, which harks back to the graceful travel of bygone times. Inspired by the 19th-century vessels used by royalty and aristocrats, this intimate and sophisticated 14-passenger ship is the smallest in the fleet owned by the international Sonesta hotel group. It’s a wonderful choice for extended families or groups of friends who want to book an entire ship for an exclusive holiday. Sumptuous cabins are decked out in blue, gold and cream, and guests can wallow in baths after a busy day sightseeing. The ship goes back and forth on week-long trips between Luxor and Aswan and wherever possible sails under wind power.

Its suites are stylish and contemporary, and the decor throughout the ship has an understated elegance, showcasing Egyptian ornaments and artwork. The thoughtful Secrets of Egypt and the Nile itinerary includes extras such as the Abdeen presidential palace for lunch and a lesson in papyrus making in Luxor.

We had a fantastic guide that went out of his way to help us with anything and everything we needed. All of the tours were so informative and well worth the cost. The ship was quite dated and our bed a bit uncomfortable, but the staff was wonderful. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. The food and entertainment were nothing to write home about, but that didn't matter as our days were packed full that we were tired/hungry enough to eat whatever was served, or skip entertainment to rest in our room.

We had a great time on the tour. Our guides Dina and Walid were both friendly and knowledgeable about all the Egyptian history. The guides were great at arranging quick transportation to the sites. My wife had a bruised knee and the guides were very helpful and accommodating by slowing the tour speed if necessary but still letting us see the entire itinerary. I would definitely recommended this tour to my friends.

Classical Egypt & Nile Cruise - 11 days

Me and my friend decide to visit Egypt. We booked with the local travel agency Flight Center, who together with On the Go Egypt helped us book the trip. We chose the Classical Egypt and Nile cruise package. Our tour guide was Mohammed (Momo) and we had one of the best experiences with him. Throughout the tour he showed deep knowledge of the history and beliefs of the ancient Egyptians monarchs and people. He made it possible for us to link all the historic sites, from the great pyramids to the Nubian Philae temple. He was able to interpret site paintings and hieroglyphics for us to make sense of the tour. My highlights for the tour were the pyramids, the valley of the kings and the cruise. We were generally happy with our stay. We felt safe at all times

Here’s what it’s like to take a Nile cruise in 2022

Lauren Keith

Oct 16, 2022 • 7 min read

Sunset cruise

Plan your trip of a lifetime in Egypt with this guide to cruising on the Nile © Lauren Keith / Lonely Planet

Egypt is nothing short of a miracle. Though the forbidding Sahara encroaches from every direction, the Nile River splashes a verdant green ribbon through the country, sometimes managing to push the desert sands only a few hundred feet back from the riverbank.

One of the world’s longest and most legendary rivers, the Nile travels more than 6500km (4100 miles) through five countries, but it’s most closely connected with Egypt. And indeed, so much of Egyptian history has unfolded along the Nile that nearly all of the country’s major cities and ancient tombs and temples are located along this lush life-giving artery.

The ancient Egyptians used the river as a highway, dispatching trade and military expeditions and toting statues of their gods between temples. The 5th century BCE Greek historian Herodotus famously called Egypt the “gift of the Nile,” and even now, millennia later, cruising the Nile is still the best way for travelers to see Egypt’s gifts for themselves.

Ready to embark on the trip of a lifetime? Here’s what you need to know about picking the best Nile river cruises.

Colourful hot-air balloons fill the sky over a landscape of desert to the right and greenery to the left

Why are so many travelers talking about Egypt in 2022?

Nowhere else in the world is the past so intertwined with the present than in Egypt, and 2022 promises to be a blockbuster time to experience them both.

Lonely Planet named Egypt one of the top 10 countries to visit this year , and the long-anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum is expected to open in November to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun , the famous golden pharaoh and “boy king.”

September marked 200 years since the Rosetta Stone was translated, which revealed the meanings of the hieroglyphs and recaptured knowledge that had been lost for centuries. New archaeological discoveries continue apace in Luxor, Saqqara and elsewhere that keep rewriting history.

Tourism hit a record high in Egypt in 2019 and was expected to grow even more in 2020, but we all know what happened then. Like many places, tourism in Egypt has now entered recovery mode, making the coming months a great – and still relatively quiet – time to visit.

Some Nile cruise companies continued construction projects that have seen new boats launched on the river, including the August 2022 debut of the Viking Osiris , a brand new 82-passenger vessel built specifically to navigate the Nile.

Why you should take a Nile cruise when you visit Egypt

While cruises might get a bad rap elsewhere in the world, traveling by boat on the Nile is a time-honored tradition that stretches back to the pharaonic era.

Along the riverbanks, life carries on in the way that it has since time immemorial: mudbrick houses poke out from behind the foliage, children wave excitedly at passing ships, a lone man paddles a blue-painted canoe piled high with alfalfa for his hungry livestock, palm trees heavy with golden dates sag as they await the harvest.

In a fast-paced world, opportunities to simply sit back and watch life glide by are few and far between. Sitting outside on the Osiris ’s balcony traveling at the speed of the river, I felt like I was watching a slow travel TV show – at once both an outside spectator and also completely immersed in it.

In ancient times, mastering the river helped rulers unite the country, and most temples are built within easy reach of the water. Sure, Egypt’s modern-day road and rail network can transport you to these temples overland, but if you skip a cruise on the Nile, the magic of the journey will certainly be missing.

How to choose a Nile cruise itinerary

The vast majority of Nile cruises operate in both directions between Luxor and Aswan in southern Egypt, making stops in Edfu, Kom Ombo and sometimes other small towns.

Which Nile cruise you pick depends on the usual two travel constraints: your budget and your time. Certain boats sail only on certain days, and Nile cruises can be as short as three days, but more commonly last five days.

Most luxury cruises on the Nile, including Viking’s Nile cruises, require signing up for a full Egypt-wide itinerary that starts and ends in Cairo , an excellent option for first-time visitors.

With little signage at historic sites and prices always open to negotiation, Egypt is a tricky place for independent travel. Unless you want to spend your precious vacation time bargaining with taxi drivers and tour guides everywhere you go, it’s best to join a tour for your first visit and leave the logistics to someone else.

What I liked in particular about Viking’s Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary is that it includes two unusual stops that aren’t standard ports of call for most Nile cruises.

The ship travels north of Luxor to Qena for passengers to disembark and visit the gorgeous Temple of Hathor at Dendera , where the ceilings have recently been cleaned, exposing beautifully painted zodiac symbols and the warped body of the sky goddess Nut, who swallows the sun every night and gives birth to it the next morning.

The boat also stops in Esna for the Temple of Khnum , a small but wonderfully preserved structure. Look up to spot the column-topping capitals, each of which has a colorfully decorated, unique bouquet of palm fronds, bunches of grapes, lotus flowers and papyrus shoots.

In Luxor, you’ll get private access to the show-stopping tomb of Nefertari – arguably the most beautiful burial site in the entire country (and certainly the most expensive at LE1400, about US$72) where nearly every square inch is painted in stunningly vibrant bas-reliefs – as well as the chance to see the stark dichotomy of Egypt’s landscapes from the sky in the basket of a gently drifting hot air balloon.

Tours of the temples and tombs are led by local expert Egyptologists who explain and translate the meanings of the hieroglyphs before your very eyes.

A few companies offer Nile cruises from Cairo, but these sailings are rare, usually operating just once a month – if at all – and take significantly longer because of the distance involved. But you’ll get the chance to check out off-the-beaten-track tombs and temples between Cairo and Luxor that see few visitors.

A view from within a small cruise ship out onto the Nile River in Egypt

What is it like on board the Viking Osiris ?

Decked out in a sleek Scandi color scheme of blond wood and blue textiles that are drenched in natural light thanks to huge floor-to-ceiling windows across much of the ship, the Viking Osiris is an oasis of calm that’s a treat to return to after a long and dusty day of exploring.

The cruise ship has 41 cabins across three decks, plus two upper levels with an indoor/outdoor dining space with windows that fold away for al fresco evenings, a cozy bar and lounge with a resident piano player in the evenings, an infinity-style pool at the back of the boat and a sun deck for days of lazy lounging.

Travelers can check out books from the on-board library’s exquisite collection to read up on Egyptian history on their voyage.

The guest rooms are surprisingly spacious, with comfy hotel-like beds, plenty of wardrobe and storage space, and good-sized bathrooms. Many staterooms come with balconies.

The ship is partially powered by solar panels, and you can see how much electricity is being generated by the sun as well as the carbon dioxide savings on a screen inside.

What travelers should know before visiting Egypt

Almost all nationalities need a visa to visit Egypt , which you can get on arrival at the airport or apply for online in advance if you’d rather skip the line. The cost of a single-entry Egyptian tourist visa is USD$25, payable in cash at the airport or by card online.

Egypt is a traditional, Muslim-majority country, so both men and women should dress modestly when visiting. For tips on what to pack, local etiquette and more, check these 14 things to help you plan your visit to Egypt .

The Best 10 River Nile Cruises In Egypt

Ever since I watched Agatha Christies “Death On The Nile”, I wanted to cruise this magnificent river in style and luxury, just like in the movie. Choosing the best Nile river cruise is not easy. There are so many ships (more than 400 are licensed to cruise the Nile !), so many levels of luxury and so many tour operators amongst which are Memphistours.co.uk , offering different river cruises that it is easy to get bogged down and ultimately make the wrong decision. In this article, I hope to decipher the confusion between the masses of cruises and pick the very best cruise for you on the River Nile.

Background about the Nile

The Nile is famous for being the longest river in the world. With a length of around 6,695 kilometers (4,160 miles), it flows into the Mediterranean Sea, and despite being thought of primarily as an Egyptian River, it also passes through Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, and Zaire. The Nile was vital to the Ancient Egyptians. With most of Egypt consisting of desert, the fertile valley alongside the Nile River was like gold to them, and thus is where one of the oldest civilizations in the world originated. Cruising the Nile today takes you in the steps of the great Pharaohs to archaeological riches, colorful bazaars, and many magnificent ancient temples and monuments.

Best Time To Go

The best time to take your Nile River cruise is between October and April. During this period, it’s not too hot, so days spent exploring Ancient Egyptian temples will be much more pleasant. The peak of the summer heat occurs from June to August, so it’s definitely worth avoiding these months.

Travel Tips

A Nile river cruise will generally take you to key landmark sights such as Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan, but it’s worth making sure yours takes you to some of the more secluded temples, too, such as Abu Simbel. Many of the cruises involve spending a significant amount of time on dry land. When you are on your ship, you don’t spend your whole time sightseeing, so put the camera away, make the most of the facilities on board, relax, and watch the world float past too. Dress appropriately too, both for the heat (huge sunhats and designer shades are a must) and for the traditions of the Muslim country of Egypt too.

Merit Dahabiya Nile Cruise

Bang for buck, our very first choice of Nile River Cruise has to be on board a stunning Dahabiya river yacht, surely the most luxurious way to experience the river. The Dahabiya is how the aristocrats would have sailed the Nile in the past and add a wonderful dose of old-world charm to your adventure. This elegant vessel has a certain exclusivity due to its intimate size and allows more privacy than on some larger ships. There are just 8 elegant cabins, but despite its size, it doesn’t want for facilities and boasts a spacious sundeck with a Jacuzzi and comfortable lounge and dining room.

Sanctuary Sun Boat IV

One of the very most luxurious boats operating on the Nile River, the Sanctuary Sun Boat IV offers a tranquil, five-star experience. It is air-conditioned, and all cabins have Nile views. There are pools on the upper and lowers decks, as well as space for soaking up the sun and for a fitness area. Choose from 36 luxury cabins and 4 stunning suites. The service and cuisine are exceptional; notably, they have a no smoking and no mobile phones rule in public areas, making for a serene and exclusive vibe.

Oberoi Zahra

Several of the top hotel groups operate boats on the River Nile, and one of our favorites is definitely the Oberoi Zahra . With 27 Luxury Cabins and Luxury Suites, the accommodation is spacious and private. Facilities are first-class, as you would expect, with an excellent restaurant and lounge, a fitness center, and an open-air, temperature-controlled swimming pool, as well as the luxe Oberoi Spa where you can indulge in a signature treatment to ease any aching muscles after strolling around the magnificent temples.

Mövenpick SS Misr Steamer Nile Cruise

Cruising the River Nile aboard a historic steamship is quite the experience and takes you back in time in true Nile style. The five decks are decorated traditionally, and there is a feeling of class about the ship. Stay in one of 28 cabins and relax on a sun deck with its swimming pool. There’s also a restaurant with a varied menu.

MS Presidential Commodore

The 77 cabins MS Presidential Commodore is one of six boats in the Commodore fleet. The comfortable cabins include a mixture of double and single cabins, which is quite rare for Nile cruises, so useful for single luxury travelers. There is a restaurant, bar, sun deck with a swimming pool, gift shops, table tennis, and evening entertainment.

River Tosca

The River Tosca (the ship not river!) is legendary for its stunning lounge that resembles a stylish gentleman’s club. Bought to you by the excellent Uniworld, it has 41 Suites and Staterooms with private marble bathrooms and French balconies. Facilities include a fitness center, library, restaurant, massage room, and a Sun Deck with a swimming pool and cabanas. It takes passengers on lengthy 12 day cruises so this is one for the more experienced river cruiser or if you want to experience the Nile in depth.

One of the newer ships to cruise the Nile is Viking Ra . The all-suite, state-of-the-art ship features Scandinavian décor, a Sun Deck, a pool, and two Jacuzzis, as well as a restaurant, lounge, and bar. With 26 suites, it’s an intimate atmosphere on board, and you can sit back and enjoy the excellent service.

Sonesta Moon

The Sonesta Moon is a great option for more affordable luxury. The facilities are still excellent, with an outdoor swimming deck, a restaurant, lounge, and bar, as well as a fitness room plus a jogging track on the top deck; you’ll never have jogging views quite like these! The décor is fresh and classic, and there are 49 standard cabins and 4 suites.

M/Y Mirage 1

The newly built Mirage is ideal if you want an oversized vessel. With 62 cabins and suites, you don’t get many bigger ships sailing the Nile. Facilities include an outdoor pool and jacuzzi, and a shaded deck area as well as a gym, lounge bar and a main dining room. It’s more contemporary than some of its counterparts and is another affordable luxury choice.

The Discoveries Of

Taking a Nile River Cruise in Egypt: What You Need to Know and Where to Book

A Nile river cruise is a quintessential part of any Egypt trip. Discover the different types of Nile cruise and best picks with this guide.

Are you ready to set sail on the adventure of a lifetime? Hop aboard a Nile cruise to see Egypt at a different pace.

The colossal waters of the Nile offer a unique adventure. Not only is it a famous attraction in itself, but cruising down the Nile is one of the best ways for exploring southern Egypt.

I loved my time on the Nile during my Egypt trip: where so much of Egypt is… on the frantic side, a Nile cruise is exactly the opposite.

Where else could you glide serenely down the river, disembarking to explore another ancient temple in the early morning light?

Unsure how to choose the perfect Nile cruise?

Check out this step-by-step guide to the different types of cruise, how to choose the type of cruise that’s best for you and practical tips to know before you go.

PS: Although it is possible to sail along other parts of the river, this guide focuses on the section between Aswan and Luxor as it’s the most popular option.

Types of Nile River Cruises

Small cruise ship.

Ready to cruise down the Nile in style? By boarding a small cruise ship, you’ll have the chance to brave the majestic waters for a few days.

This is one of the most popular options, as it’s the perfect medium between budget and luxury.

On most small cruise ships, you’ll have your own cabin to call home for the duration of your stay (although you may have to pay a single supplement).

These cruises also often include a few meals included in the price.

Most of these packages have a trained guide on board to fully immerse travellers in their surroundings by delving into Egypt’s historical significance.

With various stops along the way, such as the Temple of Horus at Edfu and the Temple of Kom Ombo, you’ll have an amazing time on and off the water.

Recommended Cruise: Two-Night Cruise From Aswan to Luxor

Luxury Nile Cruises

Luxury Nile Cruises

If you want a ‘cruise the Nile’ experience on a 5-star river-bound hotel, you’ll love the glamorous edge a luxury cruise offers. With a wide variety of amenities available on board, such as pools on deck and rooms with river views, this cruise type is sure to make travellers consider full-time life on the water.

Various luxury Nile cruise lines offer all-inclusive packages, including meals and entrance fees, and take away plenty of the planning stress.

This is one of the best Nile river cruises for travellers looking to travel on open waters for a prolonged time. With options that go up to seven days on the Nile , this pricey pick will definitely be worth its weight in gold by all the unforgettable memories you’ll create.

Recommended Cruises: Movenpick MS Darakum Nile Cruise or MS Esmerelda Nile Cruise

Dahabiya Cruise

Dahabiya Cruise

With a name derived from the Arabic term “golden one”, a Dahabiya Nile cruise is the ultimate way to experience the royal treatment.

A traditional way of travel with a luxurious spin, the Dahabiya sailboat has a long history of being the chosen vessel for royalty in Egypt’s ancient past. Luckily you don’t have to be born a Pharaoh to try this out today.

This type of boat is usually mid-size and is perfect for small groups of travellers journeying together in a private setting.

While smaller than the luxury Nile cruise options, this boat size is perfect for whizzing around or travelling at your own leisurely pace. On this boat, you’ll feel like you’ve travelled back in time to charter the transportation of nobility and see the eternal majesty Egypt has to offer.

Recommended Cruise: 8 Day Cruise from Aswan to Luxor aboard the Sonesta Amirat Dahabeya

Nile Felucca Cruise

Nile Felucca

A felucca is a traditional Egyptian wooden sailboat that will escort you down the river at a comfortable (and somewhat slow) pace.

Don’t think the slowness is a negative – you’ll have plenty of time to sit back and appreciate all the villages and sights along the river instead of steaming past them. Plus, the lack of motor equates to a blissful peace that really helps you capture the serenity of the river and its surrounds.

Thanks to their smaller size, feluccas also feel a lot more inclusive than the big cruise ships.

However, if you’re seeking a comfy cabin to sleep in on your journey down the Nile, you’re fresh out of luck.

Felucca boats have no constructed sleeping quarters or “below deck” for guests. Instead, you can sleep on the deck with mattresses in a communal space at night.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that feluccas can’t make the whole journey between Aswan and Luxor – not only are they too slow (and it would take forever) but they’re also not allowed to use the Esna Lock.

As a result, most felucca trips are restricted to a day trip or one night – so make for a great option for those of you who are short on time.

Which Type of Nile River Cruise is Best for You?

Nile Felucca

From budget-friendly trips to cruises dripping with grandeur, river adventures are abundant. What it ultimately comes down to is your specific needs as a traveller. Here are a few points to consider when weighing up the various options:

Whether you’re travelling for a month or have ten days in Egypt , time is essential when picking a cruise. If you’re planning on exploring Egypt to its fullest, a luxury cruise or a Dahabiya will be an excellent option to end your travels with a bang.

A money-saver option, such as a day trip on a felucca , is perfect for travellers looking to experience the Nile within a few hours.

Comfort/Cost

From roughing it to rolling in luxury, comfort is another factor you should consider in your decision.

If you’re a camper at heart, a felucca cruise is a great choice – sleeping on a covered deck as you bob on the water is the closest thing you can get to the river without jumping in.

For travellers with more cash to spend, a luxury cruise or dahabiya – depending if you’d prefer a bigger ship with more amenities or a smaller boat are the perfect picks.

Type of Experience

The last point to consider is what kind of excursion you’re looking to indulge. For authenticity seekers, a felucca or Dahabiya cruise is an excellent opportunity to learn and travel with a historical twist. A luxury cruise is prime if you want to explore the depths of the Nile and its surrounds while enjoying a superior level of comfort.

Best Nile Cruises

8 day cruise from aswan to luxor aboard the sonesta amirat dahabeya.

This luxury cruise offers a unique experience packed with high-end meals (it’s full board) on an opulent vessel. Plus there’s plenty of time to explore this section of the Nile at leisure. Departs Aswan each Saturday.

Movenpick MS Darakum Nile Cruise

Hoteliers Movenpick know a thing about making guests as comfortable as possible, so it should come as no surprise that the MS Darakum is a stunning way to cruise the Nile in style. It’s one of the largest ships in Egypt, which means plenty of amenities to keep you entertained while on board.

MS Esmerelda Nile Cruise

Float down the Nile in five-star style on the MS Esmerelda. Taking bookings from both Aswan and Luxor, you can also choose from 4 or 7 night trips – perfect for your itinerary.

Two-Night Cruise From Aswan to Luxor

This mid-range cruise comes complete with a local guide to help you discover the history and beauty of southern Egypt. Includes visits to Philae, Edfu, Kom Ombo and a day in Luxor.

Four-day all-inclusive cruise

Luxury lovers will rejoice, as this four-day trip is an excellent choice for travellers looking for a pampering addition to their Nile cruise.

Luxor to Aswan cruise

This four-day journey is a popular choice for visitors looking to cruise the Nile River in Egypt with a spectacular itinerary.

Practical Tips for Your Nile River Cruise

What to pack for your cruise on the nile river .

An Egypt river cruise is all about preparing yourself for the wondrous journey on the waters. While you might think it’s all clear skies and perfect winds, some key luggage is essential to brave this mighty river in comfort and style:

  • Sunscreen with a high SPF – Even when under a tarp for the day, the sun can reflect off the water’s surface and cause sunburn.
  • Insect repellent – Mosquitos can ruin even the most memorable trips. Pack in a good insect repellent to stop this from happening.
  • Sun hat & UV protection sunglasses – This is essentially an outdoor activity, and you may be discovering other attractions along the way, so be prepared and protected.
  • Light cover-ups – When visiting religious sites, you should respect local customs. This includes covering your bare shoulders (even on hot summer days). Check out my Egypt Packing List here.

How Long to Go on a Nile River Cruise?

From simple dinner cruises to days-long excursions, an Egypt Nile cruise duration is up to you. However, a popular itinerary to embark on is a trip between Aswan to Luxor or vice versa.

This kind of trip usually takes around four to five days, fully immersing guests in the Egyptian culture and surroundings.

There are also plenty of Nile cruises that will take you on shorter trips, even some that are just a few hours long (though covering a much shorter stretch of the river). If you don’t have much time in your schedule, these are perfect to fit into a busy day.

Best Time to Take Your Cruise

When travelling to Egypt, the best time to visit is the tourist off-season. As this country is a magnet for history buffs and adventure seekers, you’ll have the best chance of missing out on time-consuming queues at attractions.

The ultimate time to travel and take an Egyptian Nile cruise is during October and April. During this time, you’ll have cooler temperatures to enjoy the scenery.

Best Egypt Nile Cruise Options – Are They Worth It?

Nile river cruise options.

Drifting along Egypt’s legendary river has been romanticised to such an extent that it feels sacrilegious to not take a cruise. I did consider cutting it out but was vetoed by the husband.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A NILE RIVER CRUISE

Standard Nile river cruises ply in both directions, departing from Aswan or Luxor and returning the same way. Most ships offer three to four night itineraries that include the most important sites in Aswan & Luxor as well as Kom Ombo, Edfu & Esna along the way. They are all inclusive and cover all meals and standard beverages. A few offer two night itineraries.

The sailing is minimal, limited to a few hours on the first couple of days. It is anchored all night, and all day once in Luxor/Aswan until the next departure. Departures are staggered to avoid congestion on the route. (Be sure to tally your flights with exact day of departure).

THE BEST EGYPT NILE CRUISE BOATS

best nile river cruise boats

‘Best’ is relative. If you have deep enough pockets, high end boats like the  Oberoi Zahra  and the  Sanctuary Sun Boats  are top of the line. In the mid range,  Oberoi Philae ,  M S Mayfair  and the  Movenpick boats  are among the best rated.

Here’s a list  with some newer boats.

We chose the Oberoi Philae since it is part of one of the best hotel chains in India and we were able to get a good deal from their India office. It lived up to the high Oberoi service standards but the boat was much in need of refurbishment at the time and the food as well as the ‘Egyptologist’ allotted to our group was sub par. It has since been completely revamped and is probably as stellar as its pricier sister ship.

Dahabiyas (twin-sailed river yacht) and steam ships “bring turn-of-the-century-travel on the Nile back to life.” They are slower and their smaller size allows docking at villages the larger boats cannot reach. So you get a more authentic, immersive experience. The slower speeds result in longer itineraries, however, and the more ‘comfortable’ boats might not be much cheaper than the regular cruises. Take a look at  this  drool worthy craft. Or  this .

Is a nile cruise worth it.

That depends a lot on one’s interests, travelling style and budget.

For those unwilling to take on the logistics of inter-city travel and daily excursions, a cruise is the ideal way to ‘do’ this part of Egypt. Everything is taken care of and one is living the age old romance of river travel that was the only means of transport up until a few decades ago.

Experienced travellers might seek more than romance, however. The group excursions can feel restrictive after a point. There is an option to hire private guides but that drives up prices further.

With hindsight, I recommend and would personally opt for overland travel if I were to return. Especially considering one can organise private transfers and sightseeing for less than the cost of a well reviewed cruise.

ORIGINAL LONG NILE CRUISE

A couple of high end companies offer cruises from Cairo all the way to Aswan or vice versa.  Movenpick MS Darakum  &  Steigenberger Royale  are the two main vessels plying this route. Termed the ‘Long Cruise’ the two week itineraries cover more sites along the way including Abydos and Dendera. Ideal for travellers who do not have the time or inclination to plan themselves. They don’t operate through the year, however, and chances of cancellations due to lack of demand might be high. Check directly with the respective companies or your local provider if interested. I’d appreciate feedback in case any of you use this route.

Lake nasser cruise.

Few people consider taking the Lake Nasser cruise from Aswan to Abu Simbel or in reverse. I find the idea of approaching Abu Simbel from the lake very appealing.

The intimate La Flaneuse du Nil,  Movenpick MS Prince Abbas  &  Steigenberger Omar El Khayam  depart every Monday from Aswan and return on Fridays from Abu Simbel.

With the possibility of flying from Cairo to Abu Simbel (via Aswan), taking the 3 night Nasser Lake cruise option to return to Aswan might be a great way to maximise time in Abu Simbel. It would easily fit into the ten day itinerary above. Dates – and budget – permitting.

7 best US river cruises

Donna Heiderstadt

Whether you're fascinated by American history, culture and cuisine, or you've enjoyed river cruising in Europe but are now looking to explore closer to home, U.S. river cruises are an easy and enjoyable vacation option.

Choose from two main waterways for your U.S. river cruise: the Mississippi River — which flows through nine states from St. Paul, Minnesota, to New Orleans — or the Columbia and Snake rivers in Oregon and Washington. Some cruise lines also venture onto three smaller, lesser-known rivers: the Ohio, the Cumberland and the Tennessee. You can also explore New York's Hudson River on a fall foliage cruise.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Your choice of cruise line is equally limited. Just two companies offer multiple itineraries on U.S. rivers. American Cruise Line sails all the waterways mentioned above, while Viking offers itineraries solely on the Mississippi. Additionally, Lindblad Expeditions has introduced a food-and-wine-centric river cruise on the Columbia and Snake rivers.

Read on for our picks of the seven best U.S. river cruises. They range from seven to 15 nights and visit destinations in 16 states; itineraries take you through the colonial-heritage-rich Northeast, America's agricultural heartland and the pioneer routes of the Pacific Northwest.

American Cruise Lines' 8-night Music Cities Cruise

best nile river cruise boats

From Memphis blues and Elvis Presley's "Blue Suede Shoes" to Kentucky bluegrass and New Orleans jazz, American Cruise Lines' eight-night Music Cities Cruise sails you through a chronology of the U.S. music scene. You'll traverse three rivers (the Mississippi, Ohio and Cumberland) en route from Memphis to Nashville, or vice versa.

In Tennessee's two famous music cities, you'll have a chance to visit Elvis Presley's Graceland, stroll blues club-lined Beale Street and check out the Grand Ole Opry. You'll also visit Paducah, Kentucky, and Dover and Clarksville in Tennessee, where experiences include whiskey and bourbon tasting, tours of landmark art murals and, of course, Civil War history.

While cruising, you'll enjoy nightly entertainment that celebrates the region's musical heritage. American Cruise Lines offers this itinerary on four ships from April to October 2024, 2025 and 2026. Three of the ships — American Melody, American Symphony and American Serenade — are 180-passenger modern river ships launched in 2021, 2022 and 2023, respectively. The fourth, American Splendor, is a 180-passenger paddlewheeler that debuted in 2016.

Viking's 14-night America's Great River Cruise

best nile river cruise boats

Want the total Mississippi experience? You can cruise the entire length of this mighty river as you visit 14 cities in seven U.S. states on Viking's two-week sailing.

Available three times a year (in July, September and October), the America's Great River cruise begins in Minnesota (either St. Paul or Red Wing) and concludes in New Orleans, allowing you to experience an intricate tapestry of American history and culture.

There's eagle spotting in Red Wing and agricultural innovation in Quad Cities, Iowa. You'll enjoy Mark Twain lore in Hannibal, Missouri, and architectural landmarks, such as the soaring Gateway Arch, in St. Louis. As you cruise the lower Mississippi, you'll delve into civil rights history in Memphis; Civil War battles and historic architecture in Mississippi's Vicksburg and Natchez; Cajun and Creole music in Baton Rouge; and the legendary culinary treats and jazz of New Orleans.

All sailings are aboard the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi. Launched in 2022, it's currently the largest river ship in the U.S. and features three restaurants and an aft infinity pool.

American Cruise Lines' 8-Night Columbia & Snake River Cruise

best nile river cruise boats

If your vacation preferences favor mountain landscapes, wine tasting and pioneer lore, consider American Cruise Lines' eight-night Columbia & Snake River Cruise . You'll explore the Pacific Northwest from Portland, Oregon, to Clarkstown, Washington (or vice versa).

On the Pacific end of your voyage, you'll visit Astoria, Oregon — the oldest American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. This coastal city at the mouth of the Columbia River is known for its Victorian homes, wineries, brew pubs, and Lewis and Clark heritage. Next, from Kalama, Washington, you can join an excursion to visit the remnants of the area around Mount St. Helens, which suffered a devastating eruption in 1980.

In The Dalles, you can enjoy a sommelier-led tasting of Columbia Valley wines, visit Multnomah Falls or get adventurous on a river kayak tour. During a call on Richland, Washington, you can admire the scenic beauty around the confluence of the Columbia and Snake rivers at Sacajawea State Park. More wine tasting or outdoor adventure awaits on the way to Clarkstown.

American Cruise Line offers this itinerary on five ships from April to October 2024, 2025 and 2026. Three of the ships (American Song, American Jazz and American Harmony) are 180-passenger modern river ships launched from 2018 to 2020. American Pride is a 150-passenger paddlewheeler launched in 2012, and American West is a 110-passenger veteran paddlewheeler launched in 1995.

Viking's 7-night New Orleans & Southern Charms

best nile river cruise boats

If you've never visited New Orleans, or it's been a while, take a Mississippi River cruise that sails round-trip from the Big Easy. They offer time before or after the cruise to enjoy the city's food, music and iconic architecture — plus the ease of a round-trip flight booking. Viking's seven-night New Orleans & Southern Charms itinerary focuses solely on ports in Louisiana and Mississippi, with an emphasis on historic architecture, Cajun culture and Civil War landmarks.

From Darrow, Louisiana, you'll stroll beneath canopies of towering live oak trees to visit historic mansions or glide through the bayou. More historic architecture, along with bird-watching, awaits in St. Francisville, Louisiana, and Natchez, Mississippi. Vicksburg, Mississippi, is home to one of the Civil War's most famous battlefields. Baton Rouge, Louisiana's capital, has something to satisfy every interest, from Cajun cuisine to tours of the restored World War II-era USS Kidd.

The cruise, which is available in November and December 2024 and January, November and December 2025, ends with a full day of exploration back in New Orleans before one last night aboard the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi.

American Cruise Lines' 7-night Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise

best nile river cruise boats

Not only is the autumnal landscape in New York's Hudson Valley visually captivating, but the small cities and towns that line the river's shores are filled with fascinating early American history dating back more than 400 years.

Cruise the Hudson round-trip from New York City on American Cruise Lines' seven-night Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise . You'll visit Catskill, home to the Hudson River School Art Trail and the Olana Historic Site, or explore more actively at the Hudson River Skywalk and Kaaterskill Falls. In Albany, founded in 1609, you can tour the newly renovated New York State Capitol building, built in the late 1800s; you can also visit the New York State Museum, which dates to 1836. Feel like apple-picking? That's an option here, too.

Next, during a call at Kingston/Hyde Park, you can tour the Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site, home to the 32nd U.S. president's library and museum. You can also head to the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site, featuring an American Beaux-Arts mansion completed in 1899. The United States Military Academy at West Point, founded in 1802, is also on the itinerary, as is Sleepy Hollow. The Sleepy Hollow legend comes to life during a tour of the local cemetery where author Washington Irving is buried. Back in the Big Apple on day seven, you'll have time to explore before saying farewell to your ship.

Sailings are available from late September to early November 2024, 2025 and 2026. Sailings are onboard either the 100-passenger American Eagle, American Liberty, American Glory or American Legend (all built in 2023 or 2024), or the older 90-passenger American Star and American Independence, launched in 2007 and 2010, respectively.
