TSS Earnslaw Queenstown Cruise + Gourmet BBQ Lunch at Walter Peak Station

After seeing the sparkling waters of Lake Wakatipu from Queenstown, you’ll probably be keen to get out on the water.  There are several to choose from — we did the TSS Earnslaw cruise with a buffet lunch at Walter Peak Station. This is what we saw (and what we ate).

This post contains affiliate links. If you click one and book a hotel or tour we’ll get a small cut. It won’t cost you any extra and it helps maintain this website.

Note: We paid our own way on this trip.

The TSS Earnslaw

The TSS Earnslaw is an old steamboat which has been cruising Lake Wakatipu for over 100 years.  It was built in 1912 — a very impressive piece of old-world engineering.

It seems a bit strange to be promoting a coal-powered boat trip in this day and age. Apparently the company that runs it is investigating carbon neutral ways of powering it. I read that it currently contributes 1% of transport related greenhouse gas emissions in the Queenstown Lakes District — which I guess means there are plenty of other offenders in this space that don’t have the historical significance and iconic status that the Earnslaw enjoys. Still though, the quicker they make it cleaner the better!

The Earnslaw makes for a good photography subject too — hopefully you see it drifting into port while you’re exploring the beaches close to Queenstown.

Earnslaw Cruise on Lake Wakatipu

The Earnslaw moors at Steamer Wharf and travels down Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak Station. It takes around an hour, and on a nice day the views are stunning.  You’ll see heaps of mountains towering over high-country stations.

View of Queenstown from the TSS Earnslaw

You’ll want to be out on the front deck for the best views — luckily the boat is slow so it doesn’t get too cold and windy up there.

It’s also fun to check out the engine room. There are viewing areas where you can see all the ins and outs of the historic steam engine — the kids will love it as well. Also check out the small museum onboard.

Lunch at Walter Peak Station

If you’re going to splash out on a buffet meal in Queenstown, or anywhere in New Zealand, this is a hard option to beat. You can do it for lunch or dinner in the summer (until late March) or lunch outside of the warmer months.

Lunch at Walter Peak Station, Queenstown, New Zealand

You’ll be feasting on some of the best locally sourced meat in New Zealand, including perfectly cooked lamb, steak, and pork. You can really go to town on it too — don’t fill up on bread and salad! There are plenty of non-meat side dishes, but I reckon if you’re vegetarian you wouldn’t get your money’s worth.

After eating lunch there are a couple of options. You can see the farm show, which mostly consists of cute farm dogs doing chores, as well as some information on Walter Peak Station.

You could also walk to Beach Point (around 30 mins return) or chill out by the lawns and gardens near the restaurant. There’s also the obligatory gift shop.

Do You Have to Do the Lunch and Farm Show?

Nope — you can just do the boat ride there and back, although it seems like you can’t even get off the boat for five minutes or so at Walter Peak Station. Still though, if you just want to cruise down the lake and back it’s a solid option. You can also do horse trekking there.

Where to Book the TSS Earnslaw Cruise

Here’s where you can book the   TSS Earnslaw Cruise & Walter Peak Gourmet BBQ Lunch . I reckon it’s great value if you’re doing the boat trip anyway, especially if you eat to the best of your potential. I probably ate four times my normal lunch amount! Alternatively, you can book the TSS Earnslaw 1.5 Hour Cruise . If you prefer to book directly, you can visit the Real NZ website. It often sells out quick so you might need to book in advance if visiting Queenstown over the summer.

Description

The TSS Earnslaw is a very special steamship. As far back as 1912, the historic vessel, also nicknamed the ‘Lady of the Lake’, has been ferrying goods to obscure settlements and giving awe-struck passengers rides on the gorgeous Lake Wakatipu. Jaw-dropping scenery becomes even more memorable when viewed onboard the TSS Earnslaw.

Upon your arrival at Walter Peak, you will be treated to a sumptuous gourmet barbecue dinner which will be prepared in front of your very eyes by your expert chef. On the menu is a huge variety of produce sourced locally and in other parts of New Zealand. From juicy meats on the grill or rotisserie to a variety of fresh salads and vegetables, your taste buds are in for a treat. Your meal concludes with sinful desserts, delicious cheeses from New Zealand and piping hot cups of coffee and tea.

After dinner, enjoy a show that lends some insight into life on a high country farm. As you return to Queenstown on board the TSS Earnslaw, unwind with a cocktail from the bar or participate in a rollicking singalong session accompanied by the resident pianist.

This was a first for us and it was the highlight of our trip to Queenstown. We did the dinner cruise 6pm during summer. Breath taking views, gentle cruise across Wakatipu to a stunning restaurant. Friendly welcome, lovely staff. We thought it may have been a bit late for our 5 year old but there is so much to enjoy. Dinner was delicious and enjoyed walking around the farm afterwards. You could see the operation of the ship from higher deck which was so interesting. The dinner at Walter Peak was exceptional. Staff were so friendly and welcoming, the food was absolutely delicious and then topped off with the dog/sheep show at the end of the night made it an all round great experience. The boat trip was awesome with beautiful scenery. The dinner spread at Walter Peak Farm was great with a good variety. The only downside was that our table was one of the last to be allowed to go and get our food, consequently we didn't eat till near 8pm (we had a child who was super hungry by then), and the food started running out and was cleared away at 8.30pm, so we didn't get to eat everything and missed out on most of the desserts, there was only a handful of dishes left. Otherwise the evening was fabulous. We would definitely recommend this to anyone.

Our tour group joined Real Journey for a Milford Sound trip. We were picked up at 7 am for the day. Our bus driver, Nathan, was fabulous. His knowledge was outstanding and he presented it so well. Our bus driver stopped several times along the way for great photographs. We were on the Milford Heaven for the tour. We had a box lunch waiting for our group. It was raining which allowed the waterfalls to be magnificent. Thoroughly enjoyed our day. Arrived back to Queenstown at 730.

We went with Real Journeys (booked via Viator) to Milford Sound. They were very professional; they had everything down to a tee. The bus, which had huge windows, left Queenstown on time, and they arranged for a car to drive us from our hotel. The bus drove to Te Anau, where we stopped to give people a chance to buy food and use the bathroom. It then continued towards Milford Sound. It made a few other short stops on the way there. I very much appreciated this, because it's a drive through a national park and is quite scenic. We made it to the dock at Milford Sound just in time to board our boat. The cruise went great; it took us as far as the open sea before coming back. Then we got back on the bus and drove back, again stopping at Te Anau. It was a great way of seeing Milford Sound and it saved me the from having to drive the 7-8 hours round trip myself. I really appreciated the stops along way, as I felt I was getting to see more than other people might. With that said, I think the schedule was cut a bit too close. I didn't even have time to take a picture from the boat dock at either end of the cruise. The give you the option to fly back after the cruise, but there was a problem with someone's flight, which caused everyone on the entire bus to wait about half an hour until that was cleared up. Also, given how long you are on the bus, I would have liked them to have a bathroom on the bus. All in all, they still did a good job and I would go with them again.

We went on the Milford Sound Nature Cruise day tour with Real Journeys, and the company did an excellent job. The trip is full of beautiful scenery in general (as usual in New Zealand...yawn... ;-) ), from the water as expected but especially during the drive through the "Southern Alps." The tour bus was comfortable and clearly designed for sightseeing, with oversize side windows, windows on the roof of the bus (in place of the overhead area for bags), and slightly angled seats to improve visibility for those not sitting beside a window. The boat tour is comfortable (although we apparently had a surprisingly calm day on the water), with several areas for sitting or standing inside and outside. It was a long day, but a thoroughly enjoyable one. The Real Journeys staff we engaged with throughout the day -- in the Real Journeys office, on the bus, and on the boat -- were friendly, efficient, and informative.

We did a fly-cruise-fly tour of Milford Sound through Real Journeys, and this was one of the highlights of our 3 week trip to Australia and New Zealand! A word of warning...our trip was initially booked in the morning, and when we called to confirm an hour before, the flight was cancelled due to weather. We re-booked on an afternoon flight but were warned that the weather looked doubtful for that time as well. Fortunately, the weather cleared, and we were able to go! Our pilot said that about 35% of flights are cancelled due to weather. So, my advice would be to schedule this as early as possible during your stay in Queenstown so that you can try to re-book if you are not in the lucky 65% that are able to fly! We were soooooo glad we were able to go! This trip ended up being one of the highlights of our 3-week vacation. The views from the plane were breathtaking. All seats are window seats on the 12 passenger plane, so it's not possible to have a seat with a bad view! Our pilot was wonderful! We had a nice smooth flight and he provided great commentary on what we were seeing as we flew over various mountain ranges and rivers. For fellow Lord of the Rings fans; the flight path goes over the range used for the Misty Mountains! The final turn over the Tasman Sea was just gorgeous!! The cruise on the sound was beautiful as well! Waterfalls and rainbows everywhere!! They even bring the boat right over to the base of a few waterfalls in case anyone wants a truly up close and personal (meaning WET!) experience of the waterfalls. Apparently the weather was not only good on the afternoon we cruised, but it was one of the best days they ever have in terms of weather. The box lunch on the boat was even good!! The flight back was equally beautiful and because the day was so clear and the views amazing, our pilot did a few extra passes over some areas so guests on both sides of the plane could get the best views. No, this isn't a cheap trip, but for those from overseas, when are you going to be in New Zealand again?! This is a don't miss experience!!

New Years Eve Overnight Cruise! You can drive there in a car but I have heard that it is a lot easier to go on a tour bus which is what we did. We slept overnight on the Milford Mariner boat in Milford Sound. We were going to fly back in a helicopter to Queenstown but the weather got too rainy/windy. Heard that the helicopter has some sick views. We did the Milford Mariner cruise ship because the cabins had their own private bathrooms. The Milford Wanderer has shared bathrooms/bunks I think. The previous year for New Years eve we did the an overnight cruise on Halong Bay. We liked this Milford Sound cruise even more than Halong Bay because there were only 2 boats in the whole sound even on New Years eve! For Halong Bay there were at least 50+ ships. Milford felt a lot more serene and relaxing. Even the drive in on the bus was wonderful because they stopped at some cool hiking points. We opted for the kayak option during the overnight cruise which I would highly recommend since you do hiking on the way to Milford Sound. Can't recommend this enough!

In Queenstown, we took a Real Journeys overnight cruise on the Milford Mariner to Milford Sound which included a bus ride with hotel pickup. The drive to Milford is absolutely amazing and special - with so many scenic views and things to see. Along the way, we saw Mirror Lakes and the Chasm. Our driver was great with lots of informative commentary along the way. We think the drive to Milford is more scenic than the destination. We also don't recommend the overnight cruise. I don't think we saw anything different or special by spending the night on the boat. The boat departed at 4:30 and after a 30 min ride, anchored in Harrison Cove. We stayed there for the night, although there wasn't much to see there. You could kayak or ride in a tender craft. After the small excursion, dinner was served and it was delicious. It began with a choice of soup served at the table and then each table served themselves at the buffet. A choice of desserts were served buffet style also. After dinner there wasn't much to do so I just went to bed. In the morning, breakfast was served between 6:45 and 7:30 and then the boat headed out of the sound into the Tasman Sea. Turning around and coming back into the sound treated us to some beautiful views that are worth seeing, but I don't think we needed to spend the night to see them. There are 2 hour cruises that tour the sound and allow you to return to Queenstown the same day.

Incredibly impressed by our whole experience with Real Journeys that began this morning at 9:45 when I called to see of we were in the wrong location for our 9:40 pick up. No, we were not; I had booked us for July 25th rather than June 25th. Doh! In typical kiwi fashion, I got a no worries, we will get you on the Milford Sound tour today. We will hold the bus for you. Wow. The bus ride to Milford from Te Anau is a little under 3 hours and every moment is more stunning than the next. It's difficult to do the sites justice, but imagine mossy trees, waterfalls too numerous to count, jagged granite peaks and driving through clouds. Guides stop at 2 points along the way to show off Mirror Lake and The Chasm in Fiorjdlands National Park. The cruise itself is a little under 2 hours and has stunning views of Milford Sound. The Sovereign was the boat we were on and it was great with both indoor and less abundant outdoor viewing options. You'll be driven close to a waterfall the size of the Empire State Building and see seals sunning if you're lucky. You'll also (for an additional charge) enjoy lunch. We had the buffet and it was well stocked with mostly Asian inspired cuisine. Very good. Tea and coffee are also complimentary. One tip I'd share is to take Dramamine if you get seasick or think you might. The waves get choppy when the sound meets the Tasman Sea. Though this will occupy the better part of your day (9:30-4:30 from Te Anau and add 2 and a half hours from Queenstown), it's well worth it!

The BEST tour I've ever done. This is the only company that is allowed to have tours through Milford and Doubtful Sound. Because it was winter time, we decided to just do a day trip to Doubtful Sound. Our entire journey beginning from where they picked us up all the way to the sound was nothing short of amazing. Other than the breath-taking views, the staff was so pleasant. You can tell they put so much effort in making sure everyone gets nothing but the best experience out of this tour.

After some research on line we decide to do a day trip to Milford Sound. We booked Real Journeys on line with the option of Coach from Queenstown to Milford Sound, Cruise on Milford Sound and Fly back from Milford Sound to Queenstown. This was the more expensive option, but the thought of flying back through the incredible scenery was too much to resist. Setting off early from Queenstown, our first bus must have travelled all of a mile before dropping us off to where the main bus picked us up. This is in no way a problem and works out of necessity given the steep and narrow side streets in Queenstown for the large bus that picked us up. Our driver and guide was Keith who gave us a wonderfully informative commentary with just the right amount of dry wit to make it entertaining. The coach drive itself was nearly 400km to Milford sound, but with the stops and the commentary, it did not feel too long at all. Once in Milford Sound, we embarked on the Monarch for a two hour cruise of Milford sound. At this point I should make a comment about the weather. Against all the odds, it was a beautiful day, with the rain and low cloud of the previous day gone and replaced by bright sunshine. The Monarch departed from the pier at Milford Sound and set course along the sound itself. Lunch was pre booked by us, and our Indian vegetarian dish was served up piping hot with some great dishes. We really did not expect the food to be this good, but it was. Views were breathtaking from the upper deck, although given the strong breezes many stayed below the exposed deck. Waterfalls ran down near vertical sloped dropping into just spray before it hit the water itself. Enchanting was not too strong a word. After about two hours, we returned, picked up our boarding passes for the 8 seater aircraft to take us back to Queenstown. Our pre-flight briefing was indeed brief, but effective. It included the advice to " Use the sick bag if needed" and "wear the ear defenders for the noise, and noise is good" Good as the rest of the day had been, the forty minute flight was spectacular down the sound itself before turning and climbing back over some mountains and through the passes between others. Trust me when I say this is not to be missed, not just because you save three to four hours travelling time instead of returning by bus, but the views and experience really was once in a lifetime. Way to soon we dropped in and landed at Queenstown and climbed out of the little aircraft. Without exception we all wore grins from ear to ear. Cannot say enough good things about the organisation and execution from Real Journeys- It really was a first class experience.

About the TSS Earnslaw

The TSS Earnslaw is an integral part of Queenstown’s pioneering history and to this day a Queenstown icon.

She was commissioned by New Zealand Railways to service the communities around Lake Whakatipu. Launched in the same year as the Titanic, the TSS Earnslaw’s maiden voyage was on 18 October 1912.

Soon known as The Lady of the Lake, she provided an essential link between the isolated farming communities along the lake and the outside world.  At 48 metres long, she was the biggest boat on the Lake and carried passengers, sheep, cattle, mail and supplies.

Nearly scrapped in 1968, she was rescued and purchased by ReaNZ and put to work once again carrying passengers around the Lake. Since then the TSS Earnslaw has been painstakingly restored to its original condition – everything you see is pretty much like it was 100 years ago. Today, the TSS Earnslaw is the only coal fired steamship in operation in the southern hemisphere, making her one of the most unique experiences in the world.

The TSS Earnslaw has featured in several movies including a cameo in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as an Amazon River Boat. Parts of the trawler SS Venture in Peter Jackson’s King Kong were inspired by the TSS Earnslaw. Famous composer Ron Goodwin composed a piece of music inspired by the rhythm of the TSS Earnslaw’s engines.

About Walter Peak High Country Farm

Walter Peak High Country Farm, on the western shores of Lake Whakatipu, is steeped in history. Its sheltered bays were used as camping sites by Maori travelling to the Mararoa and Oreti Rivers on Moa hunting and pounamu (greenstone) gathering expeditions.

European settlement commenced in the 1860s with initial farming attempts by Von Tunzelman. Stock deaths, snowstorms and lack of money eventually forced him off the land.

Following a quick succession of owners, Walter Peak Station was taken over in the late 1880s by the Mackenzies. This family is credited with developing many of the principles of successful high country farming during their 80 years working the property.

At its peak, the station was one of New Zealand’s most famous with 170,000 acres, 40,000 sheep and up to 50 fulltime employees. The original homestead block of Walter Peak Station is now known as Walter Peak High Country Farm.

Over time various permanent homes were established and these included the Colonel’s Homestead with its beautiful lakeside gardens. Originally built in 1902, it was carefully reconstructed in 1977 following an accidental fire.

Walter Peak family recipes:

Scrumptious Savoury Scones

2 cups plain flour 4 teaspoons of baking powder ¼ teaspoon of salt 50 grams of butter 1 cup finely chopped onion 1 cup grated tasty cheese 1 ½ cups of milk Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt. Then rub in the butter. Add the finely chopped onion and grated cheese. Mix to stiff dough by adding the milk. Turn out onto a floured surface, lightly knead and roll out to approximately 5 cm thick. Cut into pieces and place on floured tray and cook for 15 – 18 minutes at 200C. These are tasty fresh but leave for a day, slice in half and butter. Place some of the chopped onion and grated cheese mix on the top and grill.

Perfect Homemade Pikelets

2 eggs 2 tablespoons of sugar 2 cups plain flour 4 teaspoons of baking powder ¼ teaspoon of salt 2 cups of milk Beat together 2 eggs and 2 tablespoons of sugar until creamy. Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt.  Mix to a thick batter with approximately 2 cups of milk. Spoon onto a hot griddle, turn over when bubbles appear and cook until pikelets spring back when pressed.  May be served buttered or decorated with cream and jam.

“Fabulous Farm Excursion”

Walter Peak Farm Tour

"Upon arrival we were "entertained" with a shearing show run by Cameron. This gave us an insight into shearing of sheep and also the rounding up of sheep with his amazing sheep dogs King, Sue & Bess. This was all infused with some fine humour on Cameron's behalf.... totally entertaining."

This was one of the highlights of our trip. We boarded the steamship and it took us across Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak Farm. Afternoon tea was very good, and the view across the lake from the tea rooms was lovely. We were so lucky to have a sunny day, the scenery is incredible. Beverly S, via Trip Advisor
Great for families or adults who are big kids at heart. The animals all come running down to meet you as they know there is food about. You can hand feed them - and get slobbered on - or just watch. The sheep shearing is a must see if you are in New Zealand and we got a good demonstration here. Very knowledgeable and genuinely interested staff. dianedinky, via Trip Advisor
Absolutely loved it!! We did the afternoon tour with afternoon tea. The boat trip was really enjoyable and was great to explore the boat museum and steam room. And then when we got to the farm, Tim our guide was really great to listen to and very informative and entertaining. Afternoon tea was also very delicious. W ould highly recommend this tour to anyone, especially those with kids Odyssey19447172586, via Trip Advisor
I  love this trip! This was my third time and I would go again. The TSS Earnslaw is a beautiful vintage steamboat with an excellent cafe and bar. Visit the engine room and see them shoveling the coal. Walter Peak farm is in an idyllic situation, a magical place where time seems to stand still. The animal feeding is great fun (especially Dougal) and the sheepdog demonstration is very impressive. The dogs can be patted and stroked, and love the attention. The afternoon tea was very upmarket with beautiful little cakes, savoury and sweet scones and mini sandwiches. You can eat as much as you like! The staff at the farm are outstanding. Our guide Peter was so knowledgeable and interesting and clearly loves his job and his super intelligent dogs. JulieOO_13 Auckland, New Zealand, Via TripAdvisor
Brilliant trip, recommended by a family member and we booked the 2pm sailing from Queenstown. Oh my, what a total treat. Everything was perfect, from the Earnslaw itself (polished brass, very polite staff, the chance to watch the boiler being stoked plus good coffee and snacks) to the farm experience. The weather could have been better but we didn't care it was absolutely perfect for us all. The opportunity to meet and feed the farm animals, learn about their personalities, watch the dogs at work, chat with the guide then yummy high tea! Sadly not enough time to browse in the shop there, full of tempting goodies... But maybe my husband thought that was a good thing! Do go. melanie s Nelson, New Zealand, Via TripAdvisor
A lovely boat ride to the farm where we were greeted by the farm dogs who put on a great show of their skills with sheep. Then off to the BEST buffet I’ve ever had!! Beautiful variety and all cooked superbly. Then a wander around the farm to feed the animals. All in all a wonderful day, can’t praise it enough!! Phillip W Brisbane, Australia, ViaTripAdvisor
We did the cruise trip and Walters Peak Farm visit plus afternoon tea. Two adults and one 3 year old. 100% worth the time and money. Consider it a “must do”. The cruise was not busy and had a nice café/drink shop. Also a coal engine your could go down and watch (very interesting for kids and adults alike). We had an extremely friendly and knowledgeable local tour guide on the farm. Lots of animal feeding and a great sheepdog show. Nothing went on for too long to become boring. The afternoon tea was perfect; scones warm off the oven, best I have ever had. Don’t hesitate, do it! Aiat Shamsa, Via Google
What a fabulous way to spend time on beautiful Lake Whakaitipu. Just being on TSS Earnslaw and see how it has been kept in tip top condition was worth the trip. It was such a bonus to experience a beautiful barbecue lunch at Walter Peak Station - very delicious in the most amazing setting. We loved seeing the animals, beautiful gardens and sheep dog demonstration. A day we won't forget for a very long time. Jill H Melbourne, Australia, Via TripAdvisor

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

real journeys earnslaw lunch cruise

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

real journeys earnslaw lunch cruise

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

real journeys earnslaw lunch cruise

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

real journeys earnslaw lunch cruise

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

real journeys earnslaw lunch cruise

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
