How to Find the Best Travel Agent for the Caribbean
Close your eyes. Picture your ideal vacation. You may imagine yourself on a white-sand beach, settled in with a drink in your hand, crystal-blue waters in front of you, and clear skies above. You’ll find this idyllic seaside paradise in the Caribbean, a region filled with all-inclusive resorts, island getaways, and luxury stays for travelers of all types.
It’s a go-to destination for stress-free living and relaxation—and that should extend to planning a trip to the Caribbean, as well.
For years, travelers have turned to agents (now called advisors ) to build their dream vacations, and these specialists continue to grow in importance.
The New York Times recently dubbed advisors “de facto party planner(s)” for eager would-be travelers. The article goes on to declare: “Harried Americans are looking for a proper vacation, not a stressful travel-planning experience.”
Advisors certainly help in that regard. So how do you find the right advisor for your Caribbean vacation, especially when the area presents so many wonderful options?
You should prioritize working with an advisor who’s an expert, has firsthand travel experience, provides excellent customer service, and hooks you up with exclusive deals and upgrades when available.
They’re Experts in the Region
One of the tricky things about planning a vacation is landing on a destination that lives up to (or exceeds) the hype. It seems that new, buzzworthy locales emerge each year, along with more accessible routes to previously tough-to-reach islands.
The best travel advisors earn certifications and stay ahead of travel trends to deliver the advice you need, when you need it. They're Caribbean experts who tailor a personalized itinerary to your specifications, including:
- The ideal destination for your preferred travel type, from luxurious, romantic getaways to jungle adventures and multigenerational family reunions
- The best time to travel to your preferred destination
- The most efficient ways to travel between islands , if you so desire
- All-inclusive packages that will have you enjoying the trip to your heart’s full content
Travel advisors also know the latest safety measures each destination, airline, and lodging have in place.
Most importantly, they’re not focused on finding you the best price, but the most value for your budget. Advisors reach that level of expertise only through experience. Speaking of which...
They Have Firsthand Travel Experience
The best travel advisors travel extensively themselves. When they rave about a resort, they know it inside and out.
Say you’d like to take your family of four on a Caribbean getaway. Advisors could suggest a cruise that hits all of your preferences. They could also talk you through the most family-friendly destinations, such as the Bahamas.
They’ll suggest a resort that accommodates the whole family—with thrills for the kids and relaxation for adults—while also providing guidance on the smaller details that make or break a trip: Are your kids picky eaters? Do you have diet allergies? What activities would you like to do outside the resort?
Beyond that, advisors know what all-inclusive really means at different places, what trendy locations are really worth a visit, and the best ways to get around if you’re looking to explore an entire island. Should you rent a car or rely on ride-sharing?
There’s a reason they say experience is the best teacher, and it’s no different in travel.
They Provide Top-End Customer Service
One of the main reasons travelers love working with advisors is they provide a personal touch a booking engine just can’t mimic. Great customer service goes beyond answering an inquiry, though. It involves building a rapport to get all the details of your vacation just right. The best advisors ask you about everything from your favorite place to sit on a plane to your ideal activities. They’re ready to discover if you’re more interested in exciting nightlife or day-time urban exploring.
In addition to securing your entertainment, advisors should be resources for every stage of your trip. They’ll answer burning questions before you depart, such as: What’s the best way to fend off insects on a tropical island like St. Lucia, and what’s the tipping policy for your destination? They’ll advocate for you if your travel plans change, and offer a travel insurance policy that delivers peace of mind. They’ll follow up when you return, to see just how wonderful the experience was.
The goal is not just to provide a one-time travel adventure, but to also build a relationship you’ll return to again and again.
They Have Access to Exclusive Rates & Upgrades
Just as travel advisors build relationships with their clients, they also work closely with the top brands and vendors in the industry, to the benefit of your bottom line.
This is reflected in exclusive rates unavailable to anyone else (and certainly the general public). It also comes in the form of upgrades, such as access to desired amenities, or complimentary champagne upon arrival.
These relationships can take your vacation from great to unforgettable. After all, who wants to choose between a Caribbean cruise and a luxury, all-inclusive stay when you could possibly have both at one price?
Even if you’re someone who doesn’t care where you stay, and you just want to get away for a while, it doesn’t hurt to ask about exclusive rates or upgrades. Your advisors work magic for a living.

Whether it’s rum and cigars, sun and surf or dining and dancing, nowhere does good vibes quite like the Caribbean.
A mojito or a pina colada? Reggae beats or salsa rhythms? Trekking across volcanoes or relaxing with sand between your toes? These are the only questions you need to answer while kicking back on the brilliant beaches of the Caribbean. Spend days taking in the tropical sun from white sand beaches or wading under the clear blue water while snorkeling for marine life. Fill the nights with food and music, eat fresh fish and jerked chicken, listen to Bob Marley and dance the cha-cha (though maybe not all at once).

What is the weather like in the Caribbean?
The Caribbean is mostly known for its warm, tropical climate. It does, however, have an alternate rainy season that brings tropical showers from around May to November every year. This time of year is known as the wet or summer season because temperatures will get to their yearly peak around July/August and the rainfall will get to its highest monthly average.
There is intense humidity from May to October for most of the region, with tropical storms and hurricanes typically occurring from June to November.
As the Caribbean is an island region, expect moderate to intense windy conditions all year.
Aside from the wet season, the temperatures remain pretty constant throughout the year. Daily highs are likely to sit between 82-90ºF and lows can range from 72-79ºF.
The dry season is from December to April however, the seasons can differ depending on the region in the Caribbean.
When is the best time to visit the Caribbean?
The best time to visit the Caribbean is from December to May for the dry season.
The busiest time of year falls during the months of February and April as the northern hemisphere's winter temperatures and school holidays coincide, bringing in many sun-chasing visitors.
If you're looking for a quieter time, avoid the major holidays and look to go around April before the dry season ends but tourist numbers have lessened.
With tropical storms and the hurricane season starting from May and running to November, it can be riskier traveling to the Caribbean during the wet season. However, because the weather deters many travelers, it means fewer people around.
Storms and hurricanes are most likely to occur from June to November while the rest of the wet season can have sudden, intense downpours and rained-out days. But not all places will get as much wet weather as others, so it's worth doing a bit of research before you plan.
Do I need a visa to travel to the Caribbean?
Whether you need a visa for the Caribbean will depend on your passport, the length of your stay and the countries you are visiting. For many travelers, including those with a UK, US, Canadian or Australian passport, you may need to pay an entry tax or a visa waiver fee or purchase a tourist card for countries such as Cuba, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago and the Dominican Republic. Many countries in the Caribbean may allow foreign travelers to enter as long as they are only staying for a certain amount of time. This can change depending on the country visited and your nationality. Certain countries may also have a fee to extend your stay. Countries that may not require a visa for entry may still require each traveler to have a return or onward ticket.
If you are visiting the Caribbean, make sure you have thoroughly checked the entry and exit requirements specific to your nationality and make sure you do this for each destination you are traveling to or transiting through.
See visa travel advice for travelers from Australia , the United States , the United Kingdom , Canada and New Zealand .
The page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in the Caribbean?
Tipping in the Caribbean is typically done at the discretion of the individual. If no gratuity has been added to the check, it's customary to add about 10-15% minimum.
Generally, tips are given to bellhops, housekeeping and room service. You may also tip bartenders, spa workers, barbershops, taxi drivers and waiters, it's up to you.
What is the internet access like in the Caribbean?
Internet access in the Caribbean is usually accessible, especially in the tourist areas.
Restaurants and venues may even have their own wi-fi for guests to use; sometimes, this may be for a small fee.
Can I use my cell phone while in the Caribbean?
You can use a cell device in the Caribbean. However, some areas, mainly rural and remote island areas, may not have coverage.
Several destinations also have local phones you can rent during your stay, while in other areas, the roaming function on your own device will work to keep you connected. However, ensure you've turned on global roaming before leaving your home destination. If you intend to activate global roaming while in the Caribbean, be sure to check with your service provider to find out about any fees you may incur when using this option, as sometimes this can be expensive.
What are the toilets like in the Caribbean?
Toilets in the Caribbean are typically western porcelain flush toilets. Some locations, specifically remote away from major hubs, may use a toilet hose or even a pit latrine if there is no indoor plumbing. You may need to pay to use toilets while traveling in the Caribbean and sometimes toilet paper isn't supplied - so it's a good idea to carry small change and toilet paper while out.
Also, keep an eye on whether you can flush toilet paper, as in some countries, you may not be able to.
Can I drink the water in the Caribbean?
Some countries in the Caribbean do have safe tap water, however, it may be chlorinated and cause stomach upsets.
Countries where tap water is not safe to drink include:
- the Dominican Republic
Tap water safety can also vary within countries depending on if you are outside the tourist regions. For this reason, it's not advisable to drink water from the tap in the Caribbean.
For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable bottle or canteen with filtered water if you can – your group leader will provide larger and less disposable water containers for refills on private transport days when they have the resources available.
It's also best to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables rather than eating washed or unwashed produce.
Are credit cards widely accepted in the Caribbean?
Major credit cards are widely accepted in the major tourist hubs in the Caribbean. Most countries will also have sufficient ATM access in these popular areas, however, they can sometimes be unreliable.
It's advised to carry cash when visiting more remote islands and destinations just in case card payments are not accepted.
What public holidays are celebrated in the Caribbean?
With so many countries and territories in the Caribbean, public holidays can vary from island to island. Many of these countries include Christian holidays in their calendars, as well as some more regional celebrations like Carnival.
- 1 Jan: New Year's Day
- 7 Apr: Good Friday*
- 10 Apr: Easter Monday*
- 1 May: Labour Day*
- 29 May: Whit Monday*
- 8 Jun: Corpus Christi*

- 26 Dec: Boxing Day
Carnival celebrations 2024/2025
- Feb: Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti and the Dominican Republic
- Apr: Jamaica
- Jul: St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Lucia and Cuba
- Aug: Saint Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados and Grenada
These dates may vary. See the current list of public holidays for a full list.
Is the Caribbean safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?
Homosexuality is illegal in several Caribbean countries with imprisonment used as punishment for some homosexual acts. These countries include Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago. In these countries, a high amount of discretion is recommended for LGBTQIA+ travelers.
While the other countries in the Caribbean have made homosexuality legal, the general attitudes towards the LGBTQIA+ community in this region are still conservative. It is recommended not to show public affection while traveling in this region as public affection can be uncommon, even among opposite-gender couples. Stigma still remains in some parts of the culture of this region, especially in rural areas. It is strongly advised that LGBTQIA+ travelers be discreet and mindful of local attitudes so as to avoid negative attention.
For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.
If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Is it better to book a cruise through a travel agent? We say yes
G oing online to book an airline ticket or hotel stay is a familiar and fairly easy transaction. When you book a cruise, however — particularly your first cruise — you might want to reconsider the impulse to handle the transaction yourself through a cruise line website or an online advertiser with cheap prices. This DIY approach might not be the best way to find your dream vacation at sea.
In reality, it's not that simple to book a cruise. You will likely run into a lot of questions to which you have no ready answer.
That's where specialized cruise travel agents come into play. Their expertise can help you avoid mistakes, whether you are a first-timer or a repeat cruiser checking out a brand you have not tried before.
For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .
Why you should book through a cruise travel agent
You should consider booking a cruise through a travel agent because a knowledgeable agent can help you understand the nuances of a cruise purchase and help you make the best decisions for your vacation preferences.
When you book a cruise, you are making a vacation decision that goes way beyond a flight or hotel nights. Which ship you choose determines your dining and evening entertainment choices for the duration of your vacation. Which itinerary you choose impacts which destinations you'll visit and which shoreside activities will be available to you. It can be overwhelming to evaluate the options on your own if you've never cruised before.
In addition, cruise fares can be hard to understand and compare. You might, for instance, see a fare listed online without the port charges, taxes and fees, which you only see after you give your personal details.
Plus, the price of your cruise includes accommodations, meals, entertainment and activities — and in some cases drinks, tips, shore excursions, Wi-Fi and other extras. There's a lot bundled into some fares and not as much with others. A travel agent can help you determine what your cruise fare gets you. The cheapest base cruise fare does not always provide the best value or best overall vacation deal.
Related: 4 scenarios when you should use a travel agent
You aren't just booking general passage on a ship, either, as you will be asked to pick a specific cabin and when you prefer to dine. Making a mistake in these categories can ruin your cruise experience, as there are such thing as "bad" cabins and dining times (think noisy or claustrophobic cabins, dinner at 8 p.m. with cranky children, etc.).
With cruises, you typically don't pay for your whole vacation upfront but rather put down a deposit, with final payment due at a later date. A cruise travel agent can ensure you don't miss any due dates.
Remember, you might be a DIY type when booking airlines and hotels, but booking a cruise is more complex. If you enjoy doing your own research, focus on what to do and see in the ports of call. Read about different ships, cruise lines and itineraries. However, when it comes to booking the cruise, we recommend you still contact a travel agent who specializes in cruises to help you learn a few tips and avoid any rookie mistakes.
Travel agents can get better deals on cruises
If you're concerned that working with an agent will make your cruise more expensive, don't be. Cruise travel agents receive the bulk of their income via commission from the cruise lines. Their service to you is usually free, though some might charge first-time clients a minimal fee. It's worth it.
In addition to sharing their expertise, the agent may have negotiated group space at lower rates with the cruise line, which could save you money on the cruise fare. The agent might also have first access to sale prices because the cruise lines notify their agent partners and loyalty club members first before they announce a sale to the public.
Related: 6 ways to get a deal on a cruise
Some cruise travel agents even throw in booking perks , such as a complimentary bottle of Champagne, awaiting your arrival in your cabin.
How to find a travel agent for a cruise
Cruise lines prefer that you use a travel agent rather than going online and booking directly. They have small in-house reservation teams, and when you have a question while making a booking, good luck in getting an expert on the phone in a timely manner.
Companies such as Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line provide online directories to help you find an experienced cruise travel agent near you.
You can also find experienced and certified cruise travel agents through CLIA, the Cruise Lines International Association , which is the industry's main marketing group. Asking friends who have cruised to recommend a travel agent is another good idea.
Related: 5 unexpected places that sell cruises
You might get more personalized care from smaller agencies than from the huge online agencies, though websites such as icruise.com, Cruise.com and Cruise411.com also have experienced cruise agents. These larger online travel agencies can be a good option for those who prefer to make decisions and ask questions via chat. Just make sure you get the name and phone number of the representative for any follow-up questions.
Questions to ask a cruise travel agent
In choosing a cruise travel agent, you will want to tap into the person's specific expertise about the cruise line and ship you are considering. Anyone can read a ship deck plan outlining ship spaces (which you can find online), but you are looking for people who really know their stuff.
Look for travel agencies that are cruise-only or a home-based agent who specializes in cruises. If you are using a full-service travel agency, ask for the cruise desk.
Here are some questions to ask a travel agent to determine their expertise:
- How often do you cruise?
- Have you cruised on the line I am considering?
- Have you cruised on the ship that I am considering, or do you have clients who have cruised that ship and provided a review of their vacation?
- Do you have firsthand knowledge about the cruise destination? The itinerary?
You will also want to ask the travel agent if they have a preferred relationship or negotiated agreement with any specific lines that could lead to special perks for you.
Be aware that not all agents work with all cruise lines; some represent only a few preferred suppliers or specialize in higher-end cruises. They get bigger commissions from their preferred lines.
This is not necessarily a bad thing, but be aware if the agent seems to be putting you off the line you were originally considering, as this could be the reason. On the plus side, an agent who is a preferred supplier might have negotiated rates with the cruise line and be able to call in favors, such as that bottle of Champagne or a cabin upgrade .
You should also ask if the travel agency offers 24/7 assistance (usually an 800 number) in case you have last-minute questions or something goes wrong before or during your trip.
The cruise travel agent should have questions for you as well, to better understand your dream vacation desires. If you are calling a cruise agency for the first time, the agent should be interviewing you as much as you are interviewing him or her. The agent should be focused on helping you choose the cruise line , ship and cabin that is right for you. Making the correct choices is very important to your overall cruise experience.
Bottom line
Booking a cruise is a complex enterprise. A cruise travel agent will guide you through choosing your cabin and dining times, deposits and final payment, and options for shore excursions and specialty dining. If you need to cancel the trip, the agent will also help you through the refund process. You'll have a lot less stress before and during your vacation if you book with an experienced agent.

United Airlines Is Planning a Big Expansion of Its Nonstop Cayman Islands Flights
Chef Michael White’s Second Caribbean Eatery Will Be in Puerto Rico
It began with the debut of Paranza , the eatery at The Cove at Atlantis in The Bahamas that instantly found its way onto the list of the 50 Best Restaurants in the Caribbean .
Now, renowned Michelin-starred Chef Michael White is adding another eatery in the region, this time in San Juan, Puerto Rico: Levant, a new Mediterranean concept set in the La Concha resort, which is joining Marriott’s Autograph Collection.
While Paranza is focused on Italian fare, Levant will have a broader regional inspiration. The menu will feature flavors from Italy, Greece, Spain and beyond, joined by a Mediterranean-focused wine list and a curated cocktail menu.
The restaurant will be set inside La Concha’s iconic La Perla building, the famous structure designed like a seashell right on the edge of the water in San Juan’s Condado district.
“Our vision for Levant was to create a restaurant where guests and locals can savor the authentic tastes of the Mediterranean while enjoying the beautiful beachfront setting of La Concha Resort,” said Rolando Padua, President of Paulson Puerto Rico, in a press release. “The addition of Levant marks a significant step in the evolution of La Concha Resort into an Autograph Hotel, aligning with a collection of distinctive and meticulously curated hotels designed to make a lasting impact and marking the first of its kind in Puerto Rico. We are confident that our visitors will be enchanted by the restaurant’s décor, lively ambiance, and exceptional culinary selections. This notable expansion solidifies La Concha’s reputation as a top-tier destination, consistently raising the bar for elegance and outstanding hospitality.”
The eatery is designed by Celano Design Studio, with a look that gives a nod back to the 1950s era when La Concha first opened its doors.
The building itself recently underwent a renovation as part of the hotel’s shift to the Marriott portfolio.
Levant will join existing eateries at the resort including the hand roll-focused Tekka Bar (most famous for its Las Vegas outpost.
