PERU EXPRESS - 10 days (Lima- Cusco & Puno) with Domestic Flights

My experience with G Adventures was the best! Henry Prado was the best tour guide. He was full of knowledge and we couldn't of asked for anybody better to take us on this tour. He truly is the best tour guide in Peru! He always made sure we ate at the best restaurants, had the best driver in town and always gave us and made sure we had the best service everywhere. Thanks heaps!

Best Of Peru Tour

Best Of Peru

At this time, I am going to give a synopsis of our drivers and guides. Let me lead off by saying all the guides we had were knowledgeable and catered to our needs. Kudos to Indus Travel for using them. They made sure that the members of the group were accommodated as far as comfort during our excursions. They made sure we had plenty of water to stay hydrated. Every time we entered or exited the bus they provided two bottles each of cold water. 1. All the guides were knowledgeable and attentive to the - groups needs. They assured that we all experienced the same information. 2. Transfer from Lima Airport to Sonesta Hotel, August 14 – Melissa and driver were right there to collect us and drive us the 45 minutes to our hotel. She provided us with some history of Lima and made sure we got checked into the hotel. 3. Transfer from Sonesta Hotel to Lima Airport, August 15 – Bruno was there to get us to the airport at 445am. He escorted us to the Latam desk and made sure we got checked in. If it weren’t for him, we may not have been able to board 4. Ollantaytambo ruins and Cusco City Tour – Wilda – was extremely knowledgeable in the Incan civilization. She accommodated the group in allowing some to climb the terraces and led the remainder on a tour around the ground floor. In Cusco, she led us through all the churches explaining how the Spanish had built the churches on the top of the Incan temples. 5. Machu Picchu – Luis picked us up at the hotel and made sure we got our train tickets and got on the right train. Jackeline met us at the train and guided us through the entrance process and then proceeded to lead us through the ruins. She accommodated a couple of the group that could only make it to the first level while getting the rest of the group to the top and then having us understand that the name was for the mountain (meaning old mountain). 6. Dinner at Tunupa – Guide was Alan and he was gracious enough to walk slowly to accommodate a few of the group as we had done a couple of miles already. The route to the restaurant was three city blocks STRAIGHT UPHILL. It was the same route we took earlier in the day for the tour. Alan assured that we were seated at the restaurant and promptly left us. 7. Hotel to airport for flight to Lima. Again, two of us flew Latam while the remainder of the group flew Avianca. 8. Airport to Hotel in Lima – 9. City tour and ruins – Julia led us through the city (two monasteries and through the central square) and through the Inca city of Saqsawwaman, more like the Egyptian pyramids but bigger. The worlds largest stone is located at this spot (something like 200 tons). We also visited Q’enco, Pukapukara and Tambomachmay. Again, Julia was most informative Dinner at Hualana - Pepe took us to dinner and since one of our group was sick, we asked him to join us. He regaled us with tales of his many experiences as a tour guide. Hotels – Sonesta Hotels are really fantastic. I again will commend Indus Travels for using these hotels. All Lima and Cusco hotels were close to the center of town and easy walking to the central markets and dining (when on our own). Excursions – Not much to add here, but we were exposed to lots of the history of Peru and proof of Peru’s gastronomical reputation. The tours were extraordinary, especially Machu Picchu (of course that’s what we came to see). Food was excellent, but buffets get tiresome. Our (Cindy and I) favorite was the sit down at Huana Pullana.

10 Day Andean Highlights \"Machu Picchu & Puno\" with Local Flights Tour

10 Day Andean Highlights "Machu Picchu & Puno" with Local Flights

A jam-packed, adventure-filled trip. Peru is a nature/adventure traveler's dream and this tour perfectly suits that. The tour was well organized, with comfortable accommodations and very knowledgeable guides to answer any questions. Each day varied with a cultural and activity-based element. My only critique is that I would have liked suggestions from the tour company as to how much spending money to bring (tipping is expected for almost everything) and more restaurant options from the guides on the days that we had free lunches. Overall, it was an incredible tour and I would highly recommend it.

Let’s discover the charming places in the Folkloric Capital of Peru together. If you’ve already heard about the destinations this beautiful city offers, you’ll be surprised by this list of the 7 tourist places in Puno. Certainly, the islands on Lake Titicaca, such as Uros, Taquile, and Amantaní, which fill Puno with pride and are highly visited by both domestic and foreign tourists, are on our list. But there is much more to delight in. Here, we mention some of those hidden gems. Unique and astonishing landscapes, overflowing culture, and real contact with warm people are just a sample of what Puno has for you.

Taquile Islands

Taquile Island - Puno tourist attractions

If there’s one thing Taquile offers, it’s undoubtedly tranquility and an unparalleled view of Lake Titicaca. From the beginning, you’ll feel a sense of peace, and your eyes will truly be captivated by the landscapes that seem like a magnificent work of art. Approximately 2.5 hours from the Uros Islands, this island, known as Intika in Quechua, with more than 2,000 inhabitants, will welcome you. You’ll see locals creating beautiful textiles by hand that reflect their ancestral culture, which is well-known worldwide. From the port, you’ll need to climb up to the Plaza, a beautiful place to rest and enjoy. On the island, you’ll also find ruins from the pre-Inca era, accompanied by unique views of the world’s highest navigable lake. There are also places to spend the night where you can get to know the local people a bit better. If you want to stroll around the island, take beautiful photos with the arches along the way.

Amantaní Islands

Amantani Island - Puno tourist attractions

To the north of Taquile Island, with a population of around 4,000 people, this beauty will captivate you. If your goal is to have an enriching cultural exchange, Amantaní is the right island. You can spend the night there and share more with the local people, observing their daily lives, customs, and more. You’ll find dazzling mountains where the ceremonial centers of Pachatata (Father of the Skies), located on the summit of Cerro Coanos, and Pachamama (Mother Earth) on the summit of Cerro Llaquistiti, are located. During your visit, you’ll also see that the population is engaged in agriculture but also creates beautiful textiles that will catch your attention with their colors and designs reflecting their unique art. Boat trips, horseback rides, and participation in agricultural tasks are just some of the activities you can do on this island that will energize you.

Sillustani Chullpas

Sillustani Chullpas - Puno tourist attractions

Mostly visited on the route to Juliaca Airport, about 34 km from the city of Puno. The Sillustani Chullpas were built by the Kolla culture. Their tubular constructions (tombs), which number in the hundreds, where the remains of priests and rulers were found, will simply leave you amazed. The height of these capsule-shaped tombs averages 4 to 6 meters, but you’ll find some that are up to 15 meters tall, which will truly astonish you. The preservation of this funerary complex to this day is due to the construction materials used by this culture, such as stone, ashlar, and clay. And if you’re in Sillustani, you’ll surely reach Lake Umayo, which will captivate you from beginning to end. Mystery and beautiful landscapes await you on your visit to the increasingly visited Sillustani chullpas.

Inca Uyo – Chucuito

Inca Uyo – Chucuito - Puno tourist attractions

This archaeological site, considered of Inca origin due to its construction characteristics, means “Inca dwelling” in Aymara. Known as the temple of fertility, it is located in Chucuito (18 kilometers from Puno). It has a rectangular shape and thick walls, and it is presumed that the enclosure was part of a larger set of ceremonial buildings. What attracts the most attention are the stone phalluses found inside. There are more than 80 phalluses, some complete, which catch the attention of thousands of curious tourists who visit this place. The locals believe that if a woman sits on a phallus, she will be able to have children; according to them, there is evidence of this. If you go with a guide, you’ll hear various theories about this place. One of them is that the locals themselves brought these phalluses and planted them there to make it a tourist attraction and generate more income. The truth is that it’s a unique site that you shouldn’t miss visiting.

Tinajani Canyon

Tinajani Canyon - Puno tourist attractions

About 150 kilometers from the city of Puno lies Tinajani Canyon (3953 meters above sea level). This majestic place with impressive rock formations in the shape of animals and people will leave you more than amazed. It is said that this stone forest was once the bottom of a great lake, and the wind has carved these shapes over time. The enormous reddish rock formations will keep you entertained for a long time, but you won’t only enjoy being in the middle of this forest, but also the spectacular surrounding landscape. Rivers, springs, and the sky contribute to making the view even more beautiful. Additionally, you’ll see the Puya Raimondi crowning the mountains, which can reach heights of 3 to 4 meters. Without a doubt, this place will allow you to have an authentic connection with nature and is one of the gems we told you about. If you have time, we recommend spending more than one day in this beautiful place.

Aramu Muru - Puno tourist attractions

Known as the “Portal to the Universe” or “Willka Uta” (Place of the Sun or Gate of the Gods), Aramu Muru is located in an impressive rocky forest. It is a sandstone structure of pre-Inca origin that resembles a door (approximately 7 meters wide by 7 meters high). It is undoubtedly a mystical place that you must visit to experience what you’ll hear about. This eight-angled door, accompanied by tall depressions on its sides, has a legend behind it. It is said that the Inca priest Aramu escaped from the Spaniards carrying the solar disk stored in the Qoricancha, placed the disk in the center of the door, and disappeared from the place. Rituals are currently performed, so you may see people kneeling in front of this portal with their hands outstretched to absorb energy. Being in front of this dimensional door is truly a unique experience.

We hope your visit to this magical city is truly memorable. Visit Puno and live an experience to remember!

What to Do in Puno: A Complete Guide

Two indigenous Quechua women in traditional clothing walking down a path to the harbor of Isla Taquile near Puno.

Puno is an enchanting city that overlooks Lake Titicaca and is sure to be a highlight of your trip to Peru. There’s plenty to see and do from the Uros Floating Islands to the ancient Sillustani Cemetery. Here you will find comfortable accommodations and delicious food. But what is the best way to get there? This travel guide will tell you just that, as well as what to do, where to stay, and what to eat.

Because Peru is not as easily accessible as say, the United States, you will first need to know how to quickly and safely get around. Let’s talk about getting to Puno:

Table of Contents:

How to Get to Puno

What to do in puno, where to stay, what to eat, get help planning your next trip.

The first thing to think about is how to get to Puno. There are three main ways to get to the lakeside city of Puno: Air, Train, and Bus. Because each traveler is different, there is no one-size-fits-all. Therefore, let’s talk about each option to see which is the best for you.

Although you can’t fly directly to Puno, you can fly to the nearest town of Juliaca and take a one-hour bus, taxi, or private transport into Puno. This isn’t the most popular option because of the added hassle of getting a transfer and dealing with airport security.

Regardless, if you decide to fly, you can fly from Lima to Juliaca in one hour and 40 minutes, or from Cusco to Juliaca in one hour. Latam is our go-to operator for these flights.

Peru Tours:

PeruRail will take you to Puno in style with a 10.5-hour luxury train ride through the countryside. Enjoy a gourmet lunch, afternoon tea, and entertainment on board. You can go round trip from Cusco every day except Tuesday.

Or if you prefer the ultimate luxury experience, you can take the overnight train to Puno aboard the Belmond Andean Explorer . You will get your own room with a bed, sofa, and table. These trains are perfect if you want to relax while you travel.

Most people will take a seven-hour bus from Cusco to Puno. It’s better to pay a little extra and get a safer and more reliable ride. The double-decker buses are quite comfortable and many offer phone chargers so you can charge while you travel. Our favorite operators are Cruz Del Sur or Turismo Mer . You can also take a 6-hour bus from Arequipa if you are planning to visit the “White City.”

If you are feeling particularly adventurous, you could take a car; however, this is not recommended because the road conditions are unpredictable. Unfamiliar winding roads through the Andes can be dangerous. Plus, you will be driving with Peruvian locals, who are known to drive rather aggressively.

On the other hand, if you want to avoid the hassle of figuring these things out by yourself, you can speak with a travel advisor to help you plan everything in a fully customized itinerary. At Peru for Less , your travel advisor can tell you of current conditions in Peru and give you the best recommendations. They will also book these things for you, so you can focus on the important things, like enjoying your trip.

Uros Floating Islands

Next, you will want to plan what to do in Puno. Surely, you won’t want to miss the incredible Uros Floating Islands. A short boat ride will take you a few miles from shore where you can step foot on one of the 40 or so islands made by the people who live there. Your guide will tell you the story of how the islands are made and maintained with Totora, a type of reed native to the lake. The people have lived here for hundreds of years, even predating the Incas and still follow the same traditions to build and maintain the islands. They even make their boats and houses out of the reeds. Daily activities include fishing, taking care of chickens, and maintaining the island.

But the locals have added some new traditions to their ancient ways, making homemade souvenirs for those who come to visit their islands. This has provided some income for the people, which has brought a few modern conveniences such as improved sanitary facilities, solar panels, and electric lights which reduce the risk of fire.

Cathedral of Puno

In the center of the city, you will find a main square with a unique piece of history, a baroque colonial cathedral. Designed by Simón de Astro, the beautiful structure was completed in 1757. It features two impressive bell towers, a carved exterior, and two large green doors. The interior suffered damage from a fire in the 1930 and some of the invaluable carvings were lost. Today, it has an altar made of marble, an image of Jesus, and two venerated saints. There is also a burial area to the left of the altar with the remains of Monsignor Julio Gonzales Ruiz, former bishop of the Diocese of Puno.

La Casa Del Corregidor

There is a famous yellow house in Puno that you must see. With bright yellow walls, beautiful blue doors, and a Spanish balcony, you will fall in love with the charm of this hidden gem. Conveniently located across from the Cathedral, it is one of the oldest examples of colonial-style architecture in Puno, dating back to 1668. Inside you will find a fair-trade craft shop, some local art, and a café. Relax and enjoy the vibe while eating tapas and drinking craft beer.

Festival of the Virgin of La Candelaria

In February there is a remarkable festival in Puno called the Festival of the Virgen de la Candelaria. Between the 2nd and the 12th, this two-week holiday is full of folk dancing, drinking, and colorful costumes on parade. It is believed the virgin protected the Spanish inhabitants of Puno from the Inca besiegers during the great rebellion of Tùpac Amaru in 1781.

You can find the sculpture of this virgin in the ancient mud church of San Juan Bautista. The church was renovated in a gothic style in 1886 and then converted into the official sanctuary of the Virgin in 1998.

Jirón de Lima Street and Parque Pino

If you are looking for a walk head over to Jirón de Lima Street where you will find markets, cafes, bars, and travel information. To get there, walk north from the Plaza de Armas, or main square of Puno. This street is perfect for an afternoon stroll and connects the Plaza de Armas with Parque Pino, where you will find benches to relax. Here you will see a monument built to honor Dr. Manuel Pino, a local war hero in the conflict with Chile. It’s also a great place to see the local lifestyle of the people of Puno.

Taquile Island

In addition to the Uros Islands, you can also visit the island of Taquile. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a 2.5-hour ride from Puno Port and offers some of the most stunning views of Lake Titicaca. You can walk stone paths and look down the slopes to the mysterious blue water. The island is famous for the intricate colorful fabrics made by the locals. For those who have a little more time, this is sure to be a highlight of your trip to Peru.

Sillustani Cemetery

About 20 miles from Puno is Sillustani, where you can see the Chullpas, or ancient funerary towers. These were built by the Qolla people, who were conquered by the Incas in the middle of the 15th century. The Qollas would wrap their deceased nobles in a fetal position and bury them in these towers with food and personal belongings for their journey into the afterlife. The towers can be up to 40 feet tall and are located on a hill which offers impressive views of the lake.
