Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle St George's Chapel

Windsor Castle , was the favourite residence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the largest continuously occupied castle in the world. You will get to see the State Apartments and St George's Chapel as well as Queen Mary's Dolls' House, containing a perfectly scaled replica of an aristocratic home.

At St George's Chapel you can visit the final resting places of English monarchs, Henry VIII, and his third wife Jane Seymour as well as Charles I, and see the impressive Gothic architecture. More recently St George's Chapel hosted the Royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Note the chapel is closed to the public on Sundays.

From the Royal Collection in the State Apartments, you will find works of art by Rembrandt, Rubens and Canaletto. The Royal Family still use the State Apartments for hosting events for those organisations of which they are patrons. From the battlements you will see spectacular views across the Thames Valley.

If you do not wish to enter the castle, Windsor Old Town is well worth a visit in its own right; full of history and architecture, cafes and shops and restaurants, as well as parks and walks by the river , if you would prefer to sightsee.

What to do in Windsor & Eton

Stonehenge people

The World Heritage Site of Stonehenge (entrance included) is one of the most popular UK tourist attractions.

This ancient Neolithic site, over 5,000 years' old offers a fascinating glimpse into our ancestors' past. The ring of stones still poses many archaeological and historical questions for academics and visitors alike.

The visitor centre, a mile from the stones themselves, is well worth finding time to see. It displays nearly 250 archaeological treasures, which were used or buried at Stonehenge, as well a regularly changing programme of special exhibitions.

Download the audio tour in advance (English version only), please search for the ‘Stonehenge Audio Tour’ in your App store.

In addition, reconstructed Neolithic houses outside the visitor centre, provide living history with regular demonstrations.

stonehenge and windsor tours

Itinerary so far...

A panoramic tour of the town of Windsor in a luxury 16-seater Mercedes minicoach, followed by a visit to one of the King's royal residences. View the magnificent state apartments, Queen Mary's Doll Houses and St George's Chapel, the magnificent late gothic building the resting place of many of England's royalty and then onwards to the world heritage site of Stonehenge .

Ornate gilded Gothic interior with stained glass windows.

About an hour's minicoach drive out of London lies the largest occupied castle in the world, Windsor, home to His Majesty King Charles III. We will have a drive around the castle for an all-round perspective before going inside. There is so much to see within Windsor Castle including Queen Mary's Dolls' House, a view of the Long Walk, the state apartments and the splendid late Gothic chapel of Saint George’s—the final resting place of many of England’s Kings and Queens, including the late Queen Elizabeth II.

We continue our minicoach tour through Windsor Great Park—the King's private land—famous for its ancient oak forest, and we will hear about a mysterious spirit that is said to still haunt the place. We drive past Royal Ascot, a horse racing course, to join the motorway that takes us through some of the best low heath in the country.

We will join the A303, the 'highway to the sun'—a road steeped in both myth and magic—and drive through the ancient town of Amesbury. Before Stonehenge's imposing stones come into view, we'll pause at Durrington Walls, a colossal earthen ring crowned with a grassy rampart, holding the secrets of a vibrant Neolithic community, and also Woodhenge, where ancient wood posts once stood in a circle.

Guest in front of the stones.

The enigmatic site of Stonehenge is unique and remains a mystery. The site was developed over two distinct periods from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age—a time span of almost one and a half thousand years. It seems that Stonehenge was constructed to mark the passage of the solstices, and maybe the moon as well. We'll cover some of these ideas on our tour, bearing in mind that Stonehenge is just a small part of a massive landscape that was developed by early man.

Straw roof Bronze Age huts.

In the Visitor Centre we can experience what it is like to stand in the middle of the stone circle as it developed over the centuries and during the passage of the seasons. On display is locally unearthed artefacts, including tools used in the construction of Stonehenge. Video shorts will explain how the stones were erected and how bronze was smelted. Outside the Visitor Centre is reconstructions of Bronze Age huts, based upon excavations in the area.

A courtesy bus will take us up to the site itself, navigating us through the sacred landscape of prehistoric man. We exit via the shop where souvenirs can be purchased. There's also a restaurant at the site, where hot and cold drinks and snacks can be purchased. Our journey back to London will take us back through the ancient heath of Surrey and through the suburbs of London including Twickenham Stadium (home of rugby) and Richmond, once a royal residence by the River Thames.

What makes Bath a truly spectacular place to visit are the age old Roman Baths , which attract one million visitors annually. Best Day Trips from London - Windsor Castle

Another must-visit location on your day tour from London is the town of Windsor. Known for its lovely cobblestone streets, a lively High Street and the residence of the Queen - Windsor Castle - walking through this town is a stunning experience in itself. At Windsor, you will want to visit the inside of the WIndsor Castle, the world’s oldest running castle which was originally built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century. Here the walls are adorned with works from the Royal Collection, the State Rooms are known for housing prominent world figures and St. George’s Chapel is renowned for hosting some of the most important events in British history. Take in the rich culture of the land and feel the spirit of the British Empire resonate all through this lively, delightful town.

How to make the most of your London to Stonehenge Tour

The second most important thing to consider on an out-of-town visit from London is time . If your time is limited, you might want to cover just one attraction completely instead of visiting multiple places for a more wholesome experience. Our Stonehenge London tours are the best to save on time.

However, if you have some time at hand it’s best to cover multiple sites. We suggest taking a coach trip from London for at least a day as some sites are more than 100 miles away. You also have the added advantage of choosing to go to attractions such as the Roman Baths, Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge and the Windsor Castle on these tours. Pre-purchasing your attraction tickets is ideal as tickets might sell out at your time of visit as most of the attractions such as Windsor Castle and Roman Baths only allow a set amount of visitors inside the grounds.

If you’re a tourist who has multiple days open or if you’re on vacation, then we suggest you cover as much ground as possible and indulge yourself completely into the rich English countryside. The South-West Coast is a stunning stretch of land where you can see the magnanimous Durdle Door .

Best time to go for a Stonehenge from London tour

Summer (June - August) is a beautiful time of the year and plenty of crowds flock to the nearby attractions from London during this season. However, these sites become more populated and crowded during the summer months. Winter (December - February), on the other hand presents its own challenges of insulation and comfort. Nevertheless, all sites are open throughout the year and a winter trip is definitely cheaper and less crowded if you’re willing to embrace the cold.

How to get from London to Stonehenge

While choosing a tour that includes transfers from London would be ideal, you can also choose to travel by yourself to satisfy your wanderlust as you stop by the suburbs. Here’s how

By Train : There are no direct trains from London to Stonehenge. You can board the South Western Railway at London Waterloo station to Salisbury and the journey would take only 1.5 to 3 hours. You will need to get down at Salisbury Railway station which is a 35-minute drive from there to Stonehenge.

By Car : Driving is something everyone enjoys and driving through the less-frequented towns of Farnborough, Basingstoke and Andover are truly wonderful. The journey will take you 2 hours without any stops in between. From the city centre, make your way to the M4 and turn right onto M25. Drive on M25 until you reach M3 in Egham. Jump over to A303 and turn left onto 60 at Winterbourne Stoke Crossroad Barrows. You will reach the Stonehenge visitor centre in 5 minutes from there.

By Bus: The journey from London to Stonehenge via bus takes up to 3 hours. You can board a bus at National Express 035 towards Bournemouth at Victoria Coach Station. YOu will need to change to a bus at Meeting House Lane towards Salisbury and take a bus at New Canal to the Stonehenge visitors centre.

What is the best time of the day to visit the Stonehenge and other attractions?

The best time to visit the Stonehenge or any of the other attractions is the morning. All venues are least crowded at these times and if you want a more private experience, we suggest going for these attractions as soon as they open. Another brief window opens up at lunch time when other visitors are grabbing a bite. In some cases, particularly the Roman Bath, evenings are a little less crowded.

Is there any thing for kids to do on Stonehenge from London tour?

Yes. There’s plenty for kids to enjoy and discover on day trips from London. Even basic Stonehenge tours from London allow kids opportunities to see monumental sights and some of nature’s best landscapes, while the more in-depth tours allow them to immerse themselves in the history of the land while looking at breath-taking sights.

How long can I stay at the attractions upon purchase of the ticket?

There are no time restrictions on any ticket. However, visitors at Windsor Castle are allowed to move only in one way, so if you zip through it, you will not be able to go back to see anything you’ve missed. Apart from this slight hiccup, your tickets allow you to spend as much time as you like at the attractions.

What can I do for food if I’m not carrying any?

All the places have small eateries or cafes nearby to supplement any of your food and drinks requirements. However, we do suggest carrying your own lunch box as this will help you save on money.

Should I carry anything to the Stonehenge from London tour?

We suggest carrying just a small shoulder bag/backpack. Luggage and large backpacks are not allowed into the attractions. Please carry only the essential personal use items such as medication or sunglasses.

Editor’s Pick: Premium Tours – Full Day London Tour

Price: Adults from 143 pounds (about $183); kids from 133 pounds (about $170) Duration: 9 hours

U.S. News independently paid to send  Laura French , an award-winning British travel writer currently based in London, on this tour to provide readers with an unbiased, first-hand perspective of what to expect. Premium Tours – Full Day London Tour was selected by our team as an Editor’s Pick thanks to its popularity and favorable user reviews.

This full-day bus tour packs in an impressive number of London’s must-see sights, with free time to explore at each stop. We boarded at Victoria Coach Station before ambling through Westminster, getting up-close views of honey-hued Parliament Square – framed by the Houses of Parliament , Big Ben and Westminster Abbey – from the bus. From there it was on to St. Paul’s Cathedral , where we were given a guided tour of this chandelier-bedecked marvel as our English guide shared intriguing facts about its history. Next up was Buckingham Palace, where our guide timed it so we’d catch the changing of the guard. Our next stop was the Tower of London , where we had a brief lunch break and guided orientation before having a couple of hours to roam freely. Most of the tour group made an immediate beeline for the crown jewels, eyes goggling at the impressive collection of diamond encrusted crowns and gold chalices. We rounded off the day with a cruise along the Thames. The tour ended at the London Eye , where several in the group had opted for an add-on whirl on the wheel, and a few left for cream tea at Harrod’s (two activities included in the upgraded ticket option).

Tours run daily from 7:45 a.m. to around 4:30 p.m. It’s worth noting the changing of the guard only takes place on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, so if you’re hoping to catch it, book the tour for one of those days (and while guides will do their best to accommodate seeing the changing of the guard, there’s never a guarantee).

You’ll be on your feet a fair amount, so it's best to wear comfy shoes . You'll also want to pack light – in the morning, you can leave things on the bus, but when you get off at the Tower of London, you’ll need to take everything with you, as the rest of the tour is on foot and by boat. Also, you'll have to queue a bit for the crown jewels, but it’s worth the wait!

St. Paul's Cathedral

Laura French

Why we love it:

  • Beyond the official stops, our guide pointed out plenty of other intriguing spots along the way – from Downing Street, official home of the prime minister, to Fleet Street, the former epicenter of British journalism, and the West End , the biggest theater district in the world. Despite having grown up in and around the city, I gleaned plenty of new historical facts myself, and spotted things I’d never noticed before (including the building that served as Gringotts Wizarding Bank in the "Harry Potter" movies).
  • The tour ticket covers the cost of entry for St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London and the river cruise.
  • The guide also gave us plenty of other tips – such as when to come to see the dress rehearsals for the Trooping the Color (the king’s official birthday) – and pointed out a good fish and chip shop by the Tower of London for a classic British lunch.
