Tours of Capers Island
Although it is possible to visit the island independently (and many visitors do so), if you don’t have access to a boat or the necessary navigation or paddling experience to
Capers Island State Heritage Preserve is a beautiful, undeveloped barrier island within easy reach of Charleston and the sea islands. The island, located a few miles north of Isle of Palms, is only accessible by boat or kayak.
If you want to visit Capers Island’s boneyard beach and undisturbed nature, but don’t have much boating or kayaking experience, there are several local guide companies offering tours and transportation to the island.
The easiest way to get to the island is to take one of the regular public boat tours that run to Capers from Isle of Palms; private boat tours are also available if you prefer a small-group experience.
For the more adventurous, guided kayak excursions to Capers Island are available, with most offering some time on the island to explore. These trips do require some physical stamina, and are not appropriate for complete beginners, but if you’ve kayaked before this is a unique and exciting way to see one of South Carolina’s most pristine and scenic barrier islands.

Is Savannah or Charleston better?
We’re of course partial to Charleston, but here’s the truth. There are many similarities however there are some differences in our opinion:
- Both cities are historic and beautiful.
- Both cities are extremely walkable. Savannah, with it’s park-like squares maybe more walkable than Charleston.
- Charleston has a more established and food scene with many more options.
- Charleston has better hotels and shopping.
- Both cities have equally good tours.
- Charleston has better beach options. Savannah has Tybee which is great, however it’s 1 beach vibe versus Charleston which has 3 beaches with different vibes. Checkout this Charleston beach guide article: https://travelerofcharleston.com/guide-charlestons-beaches/
- In Savannah you can walk with alcoholic beverages on the street. This is not allowed in Charleston. This can be good or bad depending on your stance.
- Savannah is more affordable.

Capers Island
Although we live in the Charleston area, we have never had the opportunity to see Capers up close and personal. Amazing and highly recommended for tourists as well as locals. The crew Mike and Katherine were amazing, thoroughly entertaining as well as informative. Kept everyone's attention and feel as though we all left the trip with added knowledge, photos and memories to hold dear. This trip allows access to the true beauty of Coastal South Carolina and we are looking forward to doing again in the fall.

My teenagers and I took the morning trip to Caper's Island and thoroughly enjoyed the scenery, the relaxing experience and the knowledgeable and personable Courtney and John, our guides. It is obvious the guides LOVE the area, nature, conservation and their jobs!!! Both of them know so much about the tides, wildlife and history of the area. We were able to see dolphins, egrets, crabs, osprey, fish, shrimp, horseshoe crab and a multitude of beautiful shells. The trip includes traveling by pontoon through inter-coastal waterways and marshlands and exploring the shallow warm water, beaches and maritime forrest of Capers island. This tour is very interactive and learned many interest facts about animal behavior! They cast a net to bring wildlife onto the boat. This is a must-do for families who want to sneak some education into the vacation. Kids young and old love will this trip. Ironically, Courtney was our guide on a previous Barrier Island eco-tour we took many years ago when the kids were little tikes and they were mesmerized by her knowledge! Needless to say, her longevity means this company is well-established! I highly recommend this tour.
We took our 12-year-old with us for this trip. It was just long enough to get out there and explore the island. We saw dolphins and got a great lesson on wildlife from our tour guide. Would definitely recommend this and do it again.

Went on ecotour with 4 adults, 2 kids and one teen. Courtney, Anna and her furry companion Moses were excellent tour guides. We saw all kinds of birds, crabs and dolphins. We had a great time exploring Capers Island and collected some beautiful whelk shells.

We always take a Sunset Dolphin Cruise with Barrier Islands when we are in town. We recently moved to Isle of Palms and now we get to share this gem of a trip with family and friends who come to visit. My favorite part of the cruise is going to Capers Island and walking Boneyard Beach. This is a must do to add to your beach trip!
My husband won a ticket for an Eco tour from last year's IOP Beach Run and we finally decided to use it. Checking in for the boat ride was easy-breezy. The seats on the boat were pretty comfortable and our guide was very animated and informational. We saw a few dolphins and lots of birds. Our time on Capers Island was lovely. I wish we could have spent more time there. The ride back to the marina was lovely with the sunset. In case you forget to bring beverages or snack, the marina has a little shop where you can purchase stuff like that. We ended up getting a couple bottles of water there. The boat had a cooler so we could keep them cool while we walked around on Capers.

Each year my friends from back in grade school and I meet up in IOP for a girls' week - reunion type week, and every year we try to try something different. It's been a 12-year tradition now. Several years ago we took one of the tours with Shane and since then he has yet to be able to get rid of us. We absolutely have the best time each year taking the eco tour and doing our oyster roast and low-country boil. Each trip is different. Stopping to get the FRESHEST oysters you will EVER have is one of the highlights for many - instead of Farm to Table - it's Marsh to Mouth - LOL - right out of the oyster bed, there is NOTHING like the taste of them! We've gone fishing, spotted dolphins, gone for sunset always something packed with fun. Shane and his four-legged cocaptain Famous Amos are the added bonus on our trip - so patient with us and always entertaining. We love it when Amos spots dolphins for us! We truly enjoy everything about this day and this adventure will always be part of our annual trip.

My son and I had the absolute pleasure of taking the dolphin sunset cruise with Mike. I now understand that they refer to him as Mikelopedia and that's completely accurate. His knowledge about sea life, eco systems, and this area is remarkable. Mike was a tremendous host. His first mate Polly (the adorable pooch) made our trip even better. My son and I do these types of tours when we travel because we love them and this was by far the best one we've ever done. We asked several questions and Mike not only answered but elaborated with a wealth of information. If you have an opportunity to take a trip with this outfit (especially Mike and Polly), do it!

Incredible dolphin sunset cruise, worth every penny. The naturalists were amazing and had answers to all of our questions. The boneyard beach was super cool and we saw tonsss of dolphins. Would recommend for any ages, as a young adult I loved it and the kids on the boat with us loved it too!

Barrier Islands Ecotours offers a Dolphin Discovery Sunset Cruise that my wife and I enjoyed Sunday 8/6/2023 and it was a wonderful experience. Our captain Brett and naturalist guide Diane were spectacular. The ride was smooth and comfortable and Diane's knowledge of dolphins, various birds, crabs, and oysters was so educational. This is a tour to really enjoy and also learn about the local habitat. I would 100% recommend this company and the tours it offers. You will not be disappointed. Thanks, Mike, Brett, and Diane, we had a wonderful experience and are already looking forward to our next adventure with y'all.

Had a great morning with Parker and crew on an eco tour! He was a fun and engaging leader and the tour was super interactive, great for all ages. So cool to see lots of animals and learn about the local wildlife. The marina is a cool spot too, we grabbed a nice lunch after. Overall a really fun outing during our trip to Charleston!

This was a great sunset tour. The guide was very informative and knowledgeable on the nature around us. The bone yard beach was beautiful. We also go to see crabs, a bald eagle & tons of dolphins. Highly recommend this sunset cruise!

We did the trip for my nephews birthday and it did NOT disappoint! The trip was educational and so interesting to learn about the different species! Not only were we accompanied by an awesome tour guide and his companion but we had the opportunity to be greeted by dolphins also! The trip ended with a stop on one of the islands where we were able to scope out and adventure along the island! 12/10 recommend! Rob and Ella Bella were amazing!

Barrier Island EcoTours
One of the most popular outings in Charleston, Barrier Island Eco Tours offers naturalist-guided tours to Capers Island Heritage Preserve. Trips depart from the Isle of Palms Marina and take you through winding salt marsh, tidal creeks, and the Intracoastal Waterway to Capers Island.
Along the way, you learn about this amazing ecosystem and the plants and animals that call it home. Bottlenose dolphins, loggerhead sea turtles, and numerous birds are common sightings. Your guide pulls crab traps and throws cast nets to bring marine life onboard to put in our touch tank for closer examination.
The majority of our scheduled trips are aboard our covered 49-passenger pontoon boat equipped with a restroom and beaching ramp. We also offer inshore fishing and private eco tours on our 6-passenger and 16-passenger boats. Welcome aboard!

A Nature Excursion from the Isle of Palms
Our Barrier Island Eco-Tours was the highlight of our week on the Isle of Palms even though it only lasted several hours. As a locally owned, affordable, family friendly excursion, the sunset dolphin cruise has a boat ride to Capers Island, a beach to explore, and animal watching all in one experience. They also offer school tours and other tour options so check it out online. This doesn’t mean that it is only appropriate for families with kids. This would be an excellent trip for people of all ages.
What to Know Why THIS Animal Experience? Exploring Capers Island Mom Tips A Learning Life Keep on Wondering Where Should We Wander Next?
![capers island eco tour](https://i0.wp.com/reclaimingwonders.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/fullsizeoutput_ba6d.jpeg?resize=1080%2C720&ssl=1)
What to Know
What: Barrier Island Eco-Tours Where: Isle of Palms, 30 minute drive from Charleston, South Carolina Mom score: 5/5 – Great experience for everyone! Kid score: 5/5 Cost: $35 adult, $25 kids 3-12, under 2 free Time: 2.5 hours
Best Part The naturalist guides and the natural learning experience. I love exposing my kids to adults who obviously love their job and have an enthusiasm to show it to others. How do we encourage our kids to grow up to be awesome adults? See an awesome adult in action.
Worst Part Not getting to explore the Capers Island for more than an hour. There will be a next time. The kids want to bring Daddy back because they loved it so much. Maybe we will try out the blue crab excursion and see if their taste buds can be enticed to try out a new crab boil experience. Or one of the longer trips.
Why THIS Animal Experience?
Because it’s run by naturalists who love their job, the animals, and the land. Our guide patiently answered ALL their questions. Leaned in. Told them they have excellent questions. The kids (and their mom!) could have kept asking questions long after the tour was over. You will see dolphins, maybe a turtle or it’s nest, a natural island preserve, the coastline, and have a great time doing it.
To get to this undeveloped barrier island, a boat is the only way to do it, and you might as well do it while learning. And how did my kids feel about this “learning”? Enrapt.
Exploring Capers Island
As we headed out to the island, Moses the standard poodle made sure we knew where the dolphins were swimming. He would bark and alert us, and we would slow the to stop near by and watch. No loggerhead sea turtles were close-by on our trip but they do see them sometimes. These guides care so much about their ocean that they even circled the boat back around to pick up a bottle floating in the water. Can you ask for a better example for the kids than that?!
After watching the bald eagle perched high up on a pole, we were scrambling off the boat! On the barrier island, Capers Island, the slope of the beach is so gradual that the kids can walk way out but watch them! They just keep going! We grown-ups walked along amazed by the pieces of broken sand dollars and shells. The kids were grudgingly gathered up from the ocean to look at a protected sea turtle nest.
Learning on the Boat
We headed back to the Isle of Palms after an hour on the beach, and our naturalist guide kept showing us her “murder scene” specimens on the boat. Holding the whelk in one hand, she showed us how the animal would have used the sharp edge to open up an oyster to eat. The perfectly drilled hole in the top of the shell had been caused by a snail as they drilled into the shell before eating out the living creature inside.
While we had been exploring the shore and boneyard beach of Capers Island, our boat captain had gone to check the crab traps and had for us living specimens. With these, we were able to see the difference between a pregnant stone crab with bright-orange developing eggs and an almost-ready-to-release momma with her belly of darker eggs.
We learned how one crab claw is harvested to allow the other to grow, were shown the gender differences, and compared blue crabs to stone crabs before she released the ladies over the side of the boat. Our amazing guide continued to show us specimens until we were back to the dock in the dark. The kids had so much to talk about all the way home!
![capers island eco tour Examining Momma Stone Crab and Her Eggs](https://i0.wp.com/reclaimingwonders.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/fullsizeoutput_ba4f.jpeg?w=1080&ssl=1)
- Leave all your stuff on the boat when you land at the barrier island. You don’t need anything other than camera and maybe your water bottle . We ended up setting our stuff down on the beach instead of carrying it along anyway. You might just get so busy exploring that you forget to grab stuff to get back on the boat.
- You are not allowed to gather shells on the protected beach. Prepare your kids that, no matter what amazing finds they make, their treasures have to stay on the island. They can always save them to show to the naturalist so she can share them with everyone on the boat ride back.
- Bring snacks or even your cooler bag onto the boat. There were some adult groups drinking beer, but it is not a party atmosphere. I wouldn’t plan to bring a whole picnic though because you are going to be too distracted looking to eat a full meal.
- The boat meets at the harbor where there is a little store with bathrooms outside to use. There is also a bathroom accessible at the back of the boat. The store has a small restaurant and tables outside. We ate a yummy breakfast one morning.
- There was a dog onboard both our boat and another in their company. Both were very friendly dogs and used to people. However, if your child (or you) are afraid on dogs, this might not be the trip for you.
![capers island eco tour](https://i0.wp.com/reclaimingwonders.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/fullsizeoutput_ba55.jpeg?resize=1080%2C720&ssl=1)
A Learning Life
Honestly, this is a great trip even if you know nothing going into the trip. The discussions are great from beginners up to those just learning more. It’s full, hands-on learning the whole time with lots of fun added in.
Kid Books
Pagoo by Holling C. Holling – This is an old one from 1957 but classic as it follows the growth of a hermit crab with lovely illustrations. Although a picture book, this book is lengthy with so much detail from a nature-loving, science writer. It will take several days to tackle this one.
A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle – Light hearted, this one is nothing but fun. My family still references it anytime hermit crabs come up in conversation.
Hermit Crabs LINE UP To Swap Shells! | Life Story | BBC Earth Kids
Keep Wondering
- What is a barrier island? What would happen if there wasn’t one?
- How is this preserved island look different than the other tourist islands you have visited?
- Why is it important to preserve the island? How do the animals benefit?
- How can we responsibly gather shells from the beach? What’s the harm?
- What is a blue crab? Stone crab? How can you tell the gender?
- How are the crabs caught? Why do you think they’re the color they are?
- How are crabs different than fish?
- Is the water the boat explored salty ocean water or fresh water?
- What kind of turtles are in this area? How are the eggs laid? Life cycle?
- How do naturalists train? Is that something you would like to do?
- What changes should we make in our life to help protect our environment better?
Where Should We Wander Next?
- Visit Boone Plantation – A short car drive away, and you’ll be at a still-active plantation to tour the farm, learn at the slave quarters, wander the grounds, and visit the house. A great trip.
- Explore the Isle of Palms – It’s a small island. If you want a laid back beach day, park along the main road and head in. Go at low tide and gather whelk shells. We found more in five minutes than ever before at any other beach.
- South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston – Though we haven’t been yet, it’s on my radar! Go see the rescued sea turtles in their hospital and so much more.
- Charleston – It’s an amazing walkable town to see the old buildings and gardens. Discuss wartime, the slave market, and go see more dolphins on the way to Fort Sumter.
- Any Animal Excursions – Just go! They are the best investment I’ve found on trips and the most memorable for all of us.

Just trust me on the this one. This is nature at its best on the Isle of Palms, South Carolina. A boat ride, dolphin watching, water play, and a natural beach all in one.
