The country provides several entertaining options to keep you occupied throughout the winter season, and one of them is skiing at some of the best ski resorts in Korea.

This guide details 12 of the best Korea ski resorts near Seoul and what to expect for your first time skiing in Korea.

When to go Skiing in Korea

The winter season runs from late November until early April, making a ski trip one of the must-do activities on any South Korea winter itinerary.

Many of the ski resorts in Korea are open from the beginning of December until late March.

Peak ski time is during January and February when schools are on their winter break. It’s also coldest during this time, with a greater chance of snowfall – but this also means busier slopes!

Planning Your Trip to Ski in Korea

You’re probably wondering, “ Are there any ski resorts in Seoul? ”

Unfortunately, there aren’t.

Most of the best Korea ski resorts are found within an hour or two of the capital city.

Doing a skiing day trip from Seoul will be easier on your pocket and also allow you to explore a variety of ski parks in Korea instead of just one.

Skiing in Seoul

Many ski resorts near Seoul can be accessed via public transport or shuttles provided by the ski resort.

These often depart from the Myeongdong district of Seoul.

But most of the information online is in Korean, and it can be overwhelming. As a foreigner, you will struggle to plan your ski trip, so I highly recommend booking a tour instead.

Top 12 Best Korea Ski Resorts Near Seoul

Gangwon-do Province, in the east of Seoul, is home to the highest concentration of Korea skiing resorts. These can easily be accessed on a day trip from the capital.

However, as you venture further out of the city, you’ll find bigger ski resorts with better-quality snow and fewer crowds.

Here’s my list of the best places to go skiing in Korea!

Yongpyong Ski Resort: The Overall Best Ski Resort in Korea

• Best for: More experienced skiers and snowboarders
• Cons: Further from Seoul than most other ski resorts in Korea
• Best tour: 2 Day tour from Seoul
• Where to stay: Yongpyong Resort

What to Expect from Yongpyong Ski Resort

Yongpyong Ski Resort is arguably the best ski resort in Korea.

Not only was it home to the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, but it also has the longest slope in the country.

Yongpyong Ski Resort also receives the most snowfall.

The park allows for a fun day in the snow as it has a large variety of slopes and caters to all levels, from beginners to those who are more advanced.

Due to its prime location, it operates longer than most Korea ski resorts. (Late November until April)

Vivaldi Park: Best Ski Resort near Seoul for Families

• Distance from Seoul: 2 hours | 90km

What To Expect from Vivaldi Park

Vivaldi Ski Park is the most visited ski park in Korea, but with that title comes the large crowds and queues on all slopes.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

What makes Vivaldi such a great ski resort in South Korea is its close proximity to Seoul. It also boasts state-of-the-art facilities, which are constantly upgraded.

Each slope at Vivaldi Park is identified by a funky slope name, such as Jazz, Reggae, and Techno. Accompanying each of these slopes is music that is played throughout the course, related to the name.

If you’re searching for where to ski in Korea with children, Vivaldi is a great choice. It has a family-friendly snow zone, Snowyland, which will keep your kids busy for hours on end.

The beginner slopes are long and wide, and it’s a great place to try your hand at snowboarding.

With long, wide slopes, it’s perfect for the whole family and is a great place for beginners learning how to ski.

Because of the size of the ski park, the slopes are not as crowded, and there are very few queues for the ski lifts.

What to expect from Elysian Ski Resort

Elysian Ski Resort is great for beginners looking to learn how to ski in Korea.

It’s easy to access using the Seoul subway, and you can pair it with a trip to Nami Island and the Gangchon Railbike , which are both nearby.

The slopes at Elysian Ski Resort aren’t too long, and the park is pretty small, so it’s not recommended for more advanced skiers.

2023 Update: Bears Town Ski Resort is temporarily closed for the 2023 Korea ski season.

What to expect from Bears Town Ski Resort

Bears Town Ski Resort is one of the lesser-known parks in Korea. But it’s also one of the closest ski resorts to Seoul.

I spent a day here, and it was one of my favorite ski resorts in Korea.

In my opinion, Bears Town is perfect for beginners as the slopes are long and wide, with a gradual incline. This makes it a great place for those learning to ski or snowboard near Seoul.

Phoenix Ski Park: The Best Place to Go Snowboarding in Korea

• Distance from Seoul: 2.5 hours | 150km
• Number of slopes: 21
• Best for: Freestyle snowboarding
• Cons: Slightly further from Seoul than other Korea ski resorts

What to expect from Phoenix Ski Resort

Phoenix Ski Park is another top ski park in Korea, located near Yongpyong Ski Resort in Gangwon Province. Spread over two peaks, it offers a wide variety of slopes and top-class facilities, including a 5-star hotel.

Phoenix was home to freestyle skiing and snowboarding events in the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and has made a name for itself as a snowboarding hotspot in Korea.

It sits at a lower elevation than Yongpyong and High1, and so the park relies heavily on artificial snow.

What to expect from Alpensia Ski Resort

Located a stone’s throw away from Yongpyong Ski Resort, Alpensia was home to the ski jump event during the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

It’s quite a bit smaller than its neighbor, Yongpyong (which is my favorite Korea ski resort) , but still offers top-class facilities.

If you’re planning on spending the weekend in Pyeongchang, it’s best to pair a trip to Alpensia Ski Resort with Yongpyong Ski Resort.

Jisan Forest Ski Resort

Jisan Ski Resort is another one of the most popular ski resorts near Seoul, as it’s a quick drive from the capital city

It gets quite busy over the weekend and is recommended for those who are learning to ski, as the park is rather small.

You can also pair a trip to Jisan Ski Resort with Everland as they are not too far from each other.

Welli Hilli Snow Park attracts snowboarders thanks to its famous halfpipe.

It’s located near Oak Valley Ski Park and is one of biggest ski resorts in Korea.

Konjiam: Another Top Ski Resort near Seoul

• Distance from Seoul: Less than an hour | 40km
• Best for: a quick trip from Seoul

What to expect from Konjiam Resort

If you’re looking to go skiing near Seoul, Konjiam is the perfect getaway as it’s a 45-minute drive.

The resort offers 11 superb slopes but the unique selling point is the number of skiers permitted.

At a limit of 7 000 visitors per day, Konjiam Resort doesn’t get too crowded.

Muju Deogyusan Ski Resort: Best skiing south of Seoul

• Distance from Seoul: 3 hours | 200km
• Number of slopes: 22
• Longest slope length: 4 300m
• Best for: People living south of Seoul
• Cons: If you’re coming from Seoul, it’s a far drive and Yongpyong and High1 are better options

What to expect from Muju Ski Resort

Muju is a great option for those living south of Seoul. It’s one of the 3 biggest ski resorts in Korea, alongside High1 and Yongpyong.

Unfortunately, it’s not one of the closest ski resorts to Seoul, and hence it’s ranked 12 on my list of best ski resorts near Seoul.

Because it lies towards the center of the country where it’s slightly warmer, Muju relies heavily on artificial snow and it can get quite icy in parts.

Tips for visiting Korea Ski Resorts

• The winters in Korea are harsh and freezing cold. Make sure you come prepared and include lots of warm clothes in your Korea packing list.
• There are lockers available at the ski resort to keep your valuables safe.
• Take cash or your bank card with you on the slopes as there are restaurants and cafes throughout the park.
• If you’re joining a ski tour, don’t be late as they will leave without you!
• If you’ve never been skiing or snowboarding, you can book an hour lesson with an English-speaking instructor.

Skiing Near Seoul, Korea: The Reality

Korea has stepped up its game since hosting the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. Since then, the country has been put on the map as one of the leading ski destinations in Asia.

It’s a great place for beginners to learn how to ski before heading to the bigger (and better) slopes of Japan, Europe, or America.

But you need to manage your expectations before visiting these ski resorts near Seoul. If you’re an advanced skier, you may be disappointed.

Here’s what to expect when skiing in South Korea for the first time.

1. Snow quality of Korea skiing resorts

Unfortunately, the quality of snow in Korea is nothing compared to that of Europe, the USA, and Japan.

Despite what you may read, there isn’t much natural snow!

The slopes are mostly made of artificial snow, and they can get icy in some areas.

Don’t get me wrong, if you’ve never skied before, you’ll love it here. But if you’re an experienced skier, you would have seen better elsewhere!

2. Slope variety

Korea’s ski resorts are much smaller than what you may be used to, so don’t expect long runs. There also isn’t much variety, so you might get bored after a day or two.

This is why I don’t recommend that you base yourself at one ski resort in Korea for the duration of your stay. Instead, visit at least 3 of the below ski resorts near Seoul and do day trips to each of them.

3. Crowds of ski resorts near Seoul

Skiing is one of the most popular winter activities in Korea.

Come the weekend, everyone (and their dog) heads to the countryside to spend the day on the slopes. If you’re going skiing in Korea on a weekend, be prepared for queues at the ski lifts and crowded slopes.

To avoid this, try to go skiing during the week or even on a Sunday when it’s quieter.

4. Efficiency

Everything in Korea operates like clockwork. It’s one of the many things I love about living here !

And this filters through to all aspects of the country, including the ski resorts in Seoul.

Fast, high-tech lifts, large gondolas, safety crew patrolling the slopes. This means you won’t have to wait in long queues (unless it’s super crowded) .

5. Food and Restaurants

Most restaurants at ski resorts in South Korea offer a mixture of western and Korean food. But the western food choices are often limited so be prepared to eat bibimbap for breakfast, as I did!

Also, if you’re backpacking Korea and you just want to enjoy a few drinks on the slopes (as is common in Europe) , think again.

There aren’t any outdoor bars with music, and the vibe isn’t much to write home about. Hence, it’s best to spend the day on the slopes and head back to Seoul after.

What to Pack When Visiting Ski Resorts in Korea

If you don’t have the below items, don’t stress! There are ski shops at the resorts where you can buy everything you need.

• Thick socks (bring a pair for after as they will get wet)
• Scarf or buff
• Beanie or warm hat
• Sunglasses or goggles (Check if your tour operator can provide goggles)
• Thermal underwear to wear beneath your ski clothes
• Gloves (you can purchase these at the resorts)
• Extra pair of clothes to change into after
• Lip balm and sunscreen

What Ski Tour Operators Will Provide

Be sure to check with your tour operator that the below is included in your ski package.

If you’re planning your trip independently, it’s best to hire the below equipment from a ski shop en route to the resort.

• Waterproof ski jacket and pants
• Helmet (confirm this with your tour operator)
• Ski’s or snowboard

Does Korea have good skiing?

There are lots of great places to go skiing in Korea. But it’s not the best skiing in the world and is better suited for beginners.

Is skiing expensive in Korea?

No, skiing is not expensive in Korea. A day tour costs on average $80 per person (90 000 KRW), which includes return transfers, lift passes, and equipment rental.

Where is the best skiing in Korea?

Yongpyong Ski Resort is regarded as the best place to ski in Korea. But there are many other places to ski near Seoul, including Oak Valley and Bears Town Ski Resort.

Where to stay in Seoul

The most central district is Myeongdong. It’s a convenient place to stay as ski tours from Seoul offer pick-ups in Myeongdong.

If you’re backpacking Seoul,  Oyo Hostel Myeongdong 5  is a hit with budget travelers.  It’s a brand new hostel situated in the center of Myeongdong, with an epic rooftop area offering great views of the Myeongdong skyline.

Traveling on a mid-range budget?   Hotel Thomas  is great value for money, given its modern features and the fact that it’s just a short walk from the subway line.

If you’re looking for a luxurious place to stay in Seoul,   Lotte Hotel   should be top of your list. With large, impeccably furnished rooms and gorgeous views, you can’t go wrong with a stay here. Not to mention that it’s well placed for exploring the best that Seoul has to offer.

Overall Thoughts on the Best Korea Ski Resorts Near Seoul in 2024

Before I moved to Korea, I knew little about the country. But after each and every day, I fell more in love with what it has to offer.

This is a great post! I am planning a ski trip to Korea this December (22nd December to 29th December). We are thinking of visiting a few ski resorts (alpensia, yongpyong, high 1 are in our minds now), but hope we don’t have to travel back to Seoul each time to get to another resort as the travel between the resorts doesn’t seem to be very convenient online. I’m wondering what will be the best route and how to travel between the resorts, would love to hear your advice! Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately it will be challenging to navigate this itinerary through online tours if you cannot speak Korean or read hangul. But for sure, you don’t want to go back to Seoul every time as it is a far drive, and all 3 resorts are on the east of Korea. It’s easy to get from Yongpyong to Alpensia as they are only 15 minutes from each other (and you can use public transport). If you are renting a car and planning your trip independently, you could also visit High1. I recommend you first visit Yongpyong and Alpensia and then drive south to High1 before returning to Seoul. Remember to take your passport to the ski resort and ask for the foreigner discounts.

Thanks for reaching out. If you’re looking for real snow, January and February are colder months and have higher chance of snow fall. But this is also not guaranteed. I visited a few ski parks in Korea in December and they’re definitely worth a visit, even if there isn’t much snow. I would recommend High1 Resort – you can read my guide here . It has a higher elevation and is a big ski park. I spent a night here and had 2 days on the slopes. There’s great variety and the ski park has an awesome atmosphere.

My family is planning to do a ski/snowboard trip again (previous 2 times were both at Phoenix Park before Covid) but we could only travel/arrive Seoul on 11/Mar/23 late nite. Do you know if Alpensia/Yongpyong Ski resort would still be in operation till 15/Mar as I could not find any online info regarding the end season dates (only see expected opening dates during early Dec 2022).

And also would you recommend Alpensia or Yongpyong if both are in operation? My husband and 2 late-adolescents will be snowboarding with some experience while i am a bad/totally beginner skier who doesnt hv confidence at slopes on my own.

Have been searching for such dates to no avail. Hope to be able to obtain some advices from you.

Hi Irene, Yongpyong generally stays open later than other ski resorts in Korea – previously they were operational until April. But I can’t see any tours available from after 11 March. I recommend that you contact the ski resort directly to confirm. You’ll be traveling outside of the peak period so if they are open, you won’t struggle to get a ticket. I also believe that Yongpyong is a bigger ski park and may be better suited to your family, so if it’s open, I recommend going there (instead of Phoenix). Have a great trip!

My family is planning to travel to Korea in end December 2022 for a ski holiday and so glad to chance upon your informative blog! All of us are absolute beginners and we were wondering if we should do a day trip or 2D1N trip instead to have a better experience. The day trip looks like it’s pretty rushed.

Which ski resort in your opinion would be perfect for absolute beginners? We were considering a resort near to Seoul such as Jisan, do u think it’s a good choice? Does Jisan have mostly real or artificial snow? However I’ve been looking around and don’t seem to find many operators with a 2D1N trip to Jisan. Any suggestions?

I did a day trip to Vivaldi park and really enjoyed it. They have fun music on all the slopes and it’s a great place to learn how to ski. My Vivali post will give you more info on my experience. Unfortunately, most ski parks in Korea will have artificial snow.

I am (quite last minute, spontaneously booked trip) try to puzzle out a 7 day itinerary for my trip to Seoul including around 2 / 2.5 days of skiing…which is in 2 weeks time already – 10th to 18th February so also overlapping lunar new year 😉

Would be great if you could let me know based on your experience if this would be doable : – I have a full 7 days in Seoul , will stay in Myeongdong – Question 1 :Considering doing within that time either a long day trip up to Yongpyong and back for 1 day, or possibly stay 1 night up there (2 days skiing) OR…interested if you think it would be better to just hit the resorts for 2 / 2.5 days skiing that are nearer by to Seoul? (note I am an intermediate to advanced level skier) The balance of my time I will stay in Seoul lapping up everything to do there 😉 -Question 2 : I am super interested to join one of the DMZ tours from Seoul as well (probably the half day one), any tips there…I am struggling to find online whether it is open for tours at the moment?

Yes, I think staying in Myeongdong is a good idea. It’s a central location, close to the subway and most tours depart from Myeongdong. Insadong is close by if you want to stay somewhere that’s less touristy and a bit more traditional.

Considering you’re a an advanced skier, you might find that one day on the slopes is enough. The parks are a lot smaller and the runs are pretty short (compared to Europe/Japan) – so you might get bored, even at High1 and YongPyong! With this in mind, you should consider one day of skiing (maybe somewhere closer to Seoul like this tour to Oak Valley ) and 6 of exploring Seoul and other day trips. You can also do one ski day trip at the start of your holiday and if you want to do more, you can book a second trip. But also keep in mind that Lunar New Year is a busy time for local travel so you’ll need to book all tours ahead of time on those dates. If you still want to do 2 days of skiing, definitely go to YongPyong and spend the night there. It’s bigger than Oak Valley but still nothing like the type of slopes you might be used to. Only visiting YongPyong for one day will a lot of time in the car!

The DMZ tours are still running but the JSA part (blue buildings where the 2 Koreas meet) is often closed due to tensions between the North and South. This is most likely the case. But it’s still worth visiting the DMZ! While the JSA was a highlight for me (unfortunately you’ll miss this), the 3rd Infiltration tunnel and Dora Observatory are also amazing experiences. This DMZ tour includes both of these.

Here’s my 7 day Seoul itinerary that you might be interested in. Give yourself enough time to explore the streets on Hongdae and the palaces in Jongno-gu.I also loved Bukhansan National park and there are some great hikes here – but not advisable if it’s snowing or icy! You should also consider a day trip to Nami Island and the Gangchon Railbike.

Are there ski resorts in Seoul?

With most of Korea’s population living in or near Seoul, it makes sense to think that there are actually ski resorts IN Seoul. After all, snowboarding and skiing are major winter sports, and there are mountains scattered throughout the city.

The bad news is there are NO ski resorts in Seoul. The city is simply too densely populated, and well… snow doesn’t tend to stick around for much longer than a few hours.

That doesn’t mean your winter ski dreams are shattered though. There are many ski resorts near Seoul that can be easily accessed within an hour or two.

When to go skiing in Seoul

From December to early March, winter in Korea brings freezing temperatures, cold winds and snow to the peninsula. Ski resorts near Seoul typically open in mid-December and close by early March.

Korea’s winter season is from December to March.

The coldest weather and most snowfall is in January and February, so these are the best months to go skiing in Seoul, and the rest of Korea.

This also happens to coincide with winter break at schools, so it’s peak time and the slopes can be very busy. Definitely something to keep in mind when planning which of Korea’s ski resorts you’ll visit this winter.

Ski Resorts in Korea | Opening Dates 2023-2024

Following is a list of the resorts and snow parks in Korea. Most of these ski resorts are close enough to Seoul for a day trip. However, if you plan to go to Yongpyong, Alpensia, Pyeongchang Phoenix, Muju Deogyusan, High1, or Eden Valley, it’s best to plan an overnight trip.

Each ski resort in Korea has a different opening date, so it’s best to confirm with individual places before heading out to the mountains, as these dates can change last minute based on snowfall.

Public Transit: Getting to a ski resort near Seoul using public transit isn’t usually the best option, unless you’re on a serious budget. Since most ski hills are in rural locations, it requires multiple transfers, and cuts into your ski day, because it can take a really long time.

By Car: If you have access to a vehicle, it’s undoubtedly the best way to get to the ski resort near Seoul of your choice.

If you’re traveling with family, or a group, and feel comfortable driving in foreign countries, renting a car is well worth it. Just be sure to pick up an International Drivers Permit in your home country, before landing in Korea.

What to Expect When Skiing in Seoul

Korea is a tiny country, with a large population, that’s mostly centred around the Seoul metropolitan area. This impacts ANY experience you have here, whether it’s walking down the street or going to a ski resort.

Ski resorts near Seoul tend to be on the smaller size, but have excellent amenities, hotels, and restaurants on-site. There aren’t super long runs or an incredible variety of slopes at most ski parks near the capital region due to their size.

We don’t get much snowfall near Seoul, so there’s not a huge amount of natural snow. Most of the snow at ski resorts in Seoul is artificially made.

You won’t find huge piles of fluffy powder, unless you head further into Gangwon-do to ski resorts like Yongpyong , Pyeongchang Phoenix, or Alpensia (where the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics were held).

Ski resorts near Seoul can get very crowded… especially on holidays and weekends. It’s a function of serving a population of 25 million people who potentially want to spend a winter weekend in the snow. If you can swing it, it’s definitely better to visit a snow park on a weekday.

One tool Korea uses to combat its high population is technology. You’ll see this at all ski resorts in Korea, in the form of super-fast high tech lifts and gondolas that can transport thousands of people per hour. You probably won’t have to wait overly long to get onto any ski lift, despite the crowds.

There are chair lifts, gondolas, and conveyer belts to transport skiers up the slope in Korea.

Ski Resorts near Seoul | Gangwon-do

Gangwon-do Province lies to the east of Seoul. This is Korea’s outdoor and nature hub, with plenty of magnificent mountain ranges and golden beaches to explore . This region has the highest concentration of ski resorts in Korea.

Gangwon-do Province is home to mountains, seas, and beaches.

Gangwon-do has a few ski resorts near Seoul that you could easily visit on a day trip, due to their proximity to the capital.

Keep in mind though, that the highest quality ski resorts in Korea are actually located quite a distance from Seoul, about 3 – 4 hours away, and are best experienced on a multi-day ski trip.

Elysian Gangchon is an incredibly popular ski resort near Seoul, geared towards beginner and intermediate skiers. 8 out of the 10 slopes in the snow park are designed for skiing at this level. There are 6 high speed ski lifts to transport skiers.

Elysian Gangchon is good place to learn how to ski

If you don’t have a car and want to travel by subway to ski or snowboard near Seoul, Elysian is pretty much your only option. It’s the only ski resort near Seoul that has a nearby train station.

If you want to go that route, get to Baegyang-ri Station (2 hours from Seoul). From there, it’s a 3 minute taxi ride ofr20 minute walk to Elysian Gangchon Ski Resort.

The Gangchon Rail Bike is a worthwhile experience near Elysian Ski Resort

Elysian Gangchon Ski Resort is in the same region as Alpaca World, Nami Island, Gangchon Rail Bike, and the Garden of Morning Calm, so these destinations are often combined into a single trip.

Vivaldi Park Ski World is located in Hongcheon, just across the Gangwon-do provincial boundary, so it’s one of the closest ski resorts to Seoul. It takes approximately 90 minutes to get there under normal traffic conditions.

You’ll also find an awesome sledding hill called Snowyland at Vivaldi Park Ski Resort.

This is the largest ski resort in the Seoul Metropolitan area, with the distinction of being the most visited ski resort in Korea for the last 7 years running. This is both good and bad. While it has state-of-the art facilities and amenities, it can get seriously crowded on weekends and holidays. If you’re looking for a bit of peace in the snow, it’s best to visit Vivaldi Park Ski Resort on a weekday.

It can get very busy at Vivaldi Park on weekends.

However, it’s popular for good reason.

With 12 slopes in total, ranging in difficulty from beginner to expert, Vivaldi is a trendy ski park with something to please absolutely everyone, including couples, groups, families, skiers, and snowboarders.

Each slope is named after a different music genre and accompanied by a corresponding soundtrack, like Hip-Hop, Jazz or Techno. There’s even a family-friendly snow zone called Snowyland, which would keep kids and non-skiers entertained all day.

Oak Valley Ski Resort was perfect for a day of skiing.

It has wide slopes that are less crowded and perfect for those first learning to ski or snowboard. If you’re graduating to the intermediate level, there’s a good variety of different ski hills to practice on. Konjiam Ski Resort is located just 50-km to the south of Seoul. There are 9 ski slopes and 5 super-fast ski lifts that can transport almost 15,000 people per hour. Most of the ski hills are rated at the intermediate level.

• There are lockers available at every ski resort to store your belongings. These are usually coin operated so come prepared with some bills or change.
• You can rent absolutely everything you need for a day of skiing onsite at the ski resort.
• Goggles, helmets and gloves are not usually included in a ski clothing rental, so come prepared with your own.
• If you don’t have goggles or helmets, you can rent them at an additional cost.
• There are stores to buy any extra items you can’t rent, like gloves or sunglasses.

Such an informative article on skiing near Seoul, Shelley! Didn’t know there weren’t ski resorts in Seoul. But I guess it makes sense since mountainous areas are usually further away from urban areas. It did look like many people on the slopes, so your suggestion to go on a weekend sounds wise. It’s good to hear the ski lifts and gondolas work very well so many people can get on the slopes as soon as possible.

I’m not one for skiing and really don’t like cold temperatures, so skiing is not for me! It looks like you and the fam had some fun, and hope your daughter enjoyed it 🙂

Hey Mabel, happy new year! There are even mountains in Seoul, but there’s just too many damn people in the city to actually set up a ski hill haha. Fortunately, there are so many nearby and the transport infrastructure is second to none in Korea. My daughter learned to ski so fast – I was totally impressed!

Guide to ski resorts near Seoul

A guide to Seoul's best day trip options for skiers and snowboarders.

South Korea is a small country with excellent transport networks. Many of Korea’s ski resorts are easily accessible via bus or rail.

South Korea’s best skiing is found in Gangwon-do, the country’s northernmost province. Skiers need only allocate three hours for the journey from Seoul to Yongpyong , High 1 or Phoenix Park – Korea’s largest (and steepest) ski resorts.

For day-trippers, however, options exist even closer to home. There are several ski areas in Gyeonggi-do, a province that wraps around Seoul and is part of the same sprawling subway network. Resorts on Gangwon-do’s western fringe are also accessible via the Seoul Metro.

The ski areas on this list are best suited to beginners, offering gentle terrain, pisted slopes and artificial snow. Of course, anyone in need of a break from the urban jungle of Seoul will enjoy these winter getaways.

1. Bears Town Resort

Runs (total): 11 Runs (km): 15 Elevation (m): 300 – 630 Vertical (m): 330 Ski lifts: 9 Lift pass (₩) : 75,000 / day

A two-time nominee for South Korea’s Best Ski Resort, Bears Town is one of the bigger ski areas in Gyeonggi-do, with 11 marked runs totalling 15 km of terrain. The resort is a 90 minute bus ride from Seoul’s Gangbyeon Station.

Seasoned skiers won’t have much trouble navigating Bear Town’s gentle pistes, but there’s enough variety to satisfy most day-trippers. Up top, “88 Challenge” and “Big Polar” provide some steeper gradients. “Little Bear”, which runs adjacent to the sledding hill, is an especially gentle learner’s slope, ideal for young children.

Tickets are sold in several varieties, with AM, PM and nighttime options available. English-language lessons can be arranged, with both private and group lessons on offer. Adults pay ₩260,000 for two hours of private tuition.

Skiing is just one of many activities offered at Bears Town. Resort facilities include an indoor swimming pool, tennis court, bowling alley, sauna and video game arcade.

How to get to Bears Town:

• Take subway line 2 to Gangbyeon Station.
• Turn right out of Exit 4, walk straight for 50 m, and cross over to the other side of the road.
• From Stand A, take Bus 11 to Bears Town Resort (06:05 to 24:20, approx. 90 mins).

2. Elysian Gangchon Resort

Runs (total): 10 Runs (km): 6 Elevation (m): 300 – 473 Vertical (m): 173 Ski lifts: 6 Lift pass (₩): 66,000 / 6 hrs

Elysian Gangchon Resort is located in Chuncheon, Gangwon-do, a reasonable distance from Seoul, but still very manageable as a day trip. In fact, Elysian is one of only two ski resorts in Korea that can be directly accessed via the subway – just on a 10 minute walk from Baekyang-ri station. The resort operates between 9:00 am and 3:00 am, with a 90 minute grooming break at 5:30 pm.

Elysian’s slopes are a little on the narrow side, but mellow enough to suit first-timers. With six lifts in operation, there’s very little wait time in between rides. Skiing is generally better in the morning before the tour buses arrive.

For shorter stays, tickets are sold by the hour as opposed to the more common half-day / full-day options. Four, six and eight-hour blocks are available, with tickets for night and dawn skiing sold separately.

In addition to skiing, Elysian offers plenty in the way of entertainment. The ski area is part of a larger facility that includes an outdoor pool, 27-hole golf course, theme park and outdoor stage set-up. The resort also operates a fairly sizeable ski house equipped with several large-scale restaurants including Snow Garden, a Western-style cafeteria. Elysian is within short reach of Nami Island , another popular tourist site.

How to get to Elysian Gangchon:

• Take the Gyeongchun subway line to Baekyang-ri Station (Mangu Station on the Gyeongui-Jungang line is a popular transfer point).
• From Exit 1, take a complimentary 2-minute shuttle to Elysian Gangchon Resort (departs every 20 mins).

3. Jisan Forest Resort (+ Yangji Pine Resort)

Runs (total): 8 Runs (km): 8 Elevation (m): 100 – 304 Vertical (m): 204 Ski lifts: 5 Lift pass (₩): 69,000 / day

Jisan Forest Resort is located in Icheon, Gyeonggi-do, approximately 50 km south-east of Seoul. Despite its proximity to Seoul, Jisan is a little tricky to reach via public transport, particularly for foreigners – booking a seat on the resort-operated shuttle requires a Korean ID number .

The resort is open from early December until early March. Lifts operate between 7:30 am and 2:30 am – 19 hours of uninterrupted skiing for anyone who wants it.

Jisan is the southernmost resort on this list (also the lowest elevation), but its snow-making technology allows for a consistent base in all conditions. The resort is well suited to beginners, with plenty of mellow pistes to choose from (including one reserved for ski lessons). More experienced skiers will enjoy Jisan’s formidable terrain park – the best on offer in Gyeonggi-do.

A full day’s lift access costs ₩69,000, but options for shorter spells exist. Jisan’s smallish slopes may not warrant more than a few hours of skiing.

Yangji Pine Resort , located just 2 km from Jisan Forest, provides another option for skiers. Yangji’s 8 runs are serviced by 7 lifts, offering 4.8 km of marked trails. The resort’s lift pass is priced at ₩70,000 per day, with AM (₩52,000), PM (₩55,000) evening (₩55,000) and night (₩45,000) options available.

How to get to Jisan Forest:

• Take subway line 2 (green) to Gangbyeon Station (the location of Dong Seoul Bus Terminal).
• From Dong Seoul Bus Terminal, take an intercity bus to Icheon Bus Terminal (6:10 am to 10:40 pm, approx. 1 hr).
• From Icheon Bus Terminal, take Bus 12 to Jisan Forest Resort (approx. 40 mins).

4. Konjiam Resort

Runs (total): 9 Runs (km): 7.2 Elevation (m): 177 – 497 Vertical (m): 320 Ski lifts: 5 Lift pass (₩): 77,000 / 6 hrs (weekend)

Konjiam is a 9-slope resort within a 45 minute drive south of Seoul. Getting to the resort is a breeze thanks to its proximity to Gonjiam station on the Gyeonggang line of the Seoul Metro.

The resort’s unique selling point is that it limits admission to 7000 visitors at a time. This helps to limit crowds on the slopes – a blessing given just how close to Seoul the resort lies.

The ski area is serviced by five high-speed chairlifts. Beginners will want to test their legs on Hanui, Konjiam’s gentlest slope. Those with more confidence can head to the top of Firmhill and enjoy views of Mt. Dobong, Namsan Tower and Kwangju city. However, this is one of Korea’s smallest ski hills and will provide a comfortable training ground for even the wobbliest of skiers.

Typical of many resorts in this area, Konjiam also offers night skiing until the early hours of the morning. Slopes are open until 4am, well after the ski schools and young families have packed up.

How to get to Konjiam:

• Take the Gyeonggang subway line to Gonjiam Station (Imae Station on the Bundang line is a popular transfer point).
• Take a 20-minute shuttle to Konjiam Resort from the Konjiam K&R bus stop (Kiss & Ride). Bus schedule available here .

5. Daemyung Vivaldi Park

Runs (total): 13 Runs (km): 8 Elevation (m): 270 – 580 Vertical (m): 310 Ski lifts: 10 Lift pass (₩): 76,000 / day

Vivaldi Park usurped Yongpyong as Korea’s Best Ski Resort at the 2017 World Ski Awards held in Kitzbühel, Austria. Image: Sheikh Izham   CC BY 2.0

The popular Vivaldi Park is arguably the best resort on this list, offering more variety and better infrastructure than its less heralded counterparts. It’s also one of the furthest from Seoul, located on the western fringe of Gangwon-do, not far from Elysian Gangchon.

To its credit, the resort offers a free shuttle bus from Seoul, departing from Hongdae Station and travelling via Myeongdong (Lotteworld) and CALT (City Airport, Logic & Travel), outside of Samseong Station.

Last year, VIvaldi Park usurped Yongpyong as Korea’s Best Ski Resort at the 2017 World Ski Awards held in Kitzbühel, Austria. Though Vivaldi Park is substantially smaller than Yongpyong, its impressive facilities and lift infrastructure were enough to thrust the resort into top spot.

The ski area itself features 13 slopes and 10 ski lifts including Asia’s first 8-seater express chairlift. The resort also operates an 8-person gondola, transporting guests to a modest height of 580 m.

Vivaldi Park advertises itself as Korea’s most visited resort. Best get there early to beat the crowds.

How to get to Vivaldi Park:

• Take Seoul Subway Line 2 to Samseong Station.
• Take Exit 5, and make a right turn at Woori Bank.
• From CALT (City Airport, Logis & Travel), board Vivaldi Park’s free shuttle bus. More information here .

how does it works this year with the Covid 19, we would like to go for 7/days in Korea with 3/4 for skiing December/January

Ski resorts will open their facilities but not all the ski-related tours that Trazy used to sell will open this year. If you are coming from abroad, you need to quarantine for 2 weeks at a designated facility upon arrival according to the policy.
