ABOUT THE BOOK

The book begins with the Watcher as he observes Earth and the inner struggles of the Marvel heroes. He watches Doctor Doom (who has harnessed the power of the Negative Zone) slowly destroy the human spirit. The Watcher then leads Mr. Fantastic on a meta journey through the pages of classic comic books. Ultimately, our heroes come to a Zen solution in an unexpected fashion — one that aligns with Patrick's other beloved and award-winning books — leaving us with a renewed sense of love, hope, and redemption.

The Super Hero's Journey incorporates pages and panels from classic 1960s Marvel comics written by Stan Lee and illustrated by Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and Don Heck. These pages are interwoven with Patrick’s own comic art and paintings to tell a new story for a new audience. ***

" The Super Hero’s Journey is a fantastical dream-memory of my childhood infatuation with comic books, and a tale of the spiritual inner journey of reconnecting to the “super being” in us all. The book is a love letter celebrating the artistry and wonder of the original Marvel Universe as created by Lee, Kirby, and Ditko. It’s a mashup between my art and the original panels from those classic 1960 Marvel Comics."

Teaching at its best is not a matter of technique—it is primarily an act of love. William Ayers

If I am left with only one lingering feeling from reading To Teach: The Journey, in Comics , it is love. This book exudes love: love for the profession of teaching and the brave, creative souls who engage in it; love for the children and youth who inspire, challenge, and teach the teacher; and even, in the end, love for the educational bureaucrats who are lampooned at various points in the book. William Ayers and Ryan Alexander-Tanner obviously adore teaching in all its messiness, and that adoration is infectious.

This book is a graphic novel adaptation of William Ayers's classic work To Teach: The Journey of a Teacher , first published in 1993. The original text has been brought to life through striking black-and-white cartoons from artist Ryan Alexander-Tanner. As in the original, the graphic novel is made up of eight chapters, each delving into a different aspect of teaching. The ideas are grounded in Ayers's time as a kindergarten teacher, his experiences as a parent, and the work of other innovative educators. To Teach is a book about what is possible; the educators featured are real people making real magic in real classrooms.

Ayers and Alexander-Tanner offer an impassioned plea for sloughing off the “myths” of teaching, such as the idea that children are worse than they were in the past or that a teacher's work is to “save” students. They argue for a vision of education that is child-centered, creative, social, investigative, and holistic, while taking aim at the forces that seek to standardize and dehumanize the art of teaching.

The authors recenter our attention on the reasons educators are drawn to teaching in the first place: the vibrancy and complexity of children, the mystery and adventure of teaching, and, of course, the love. They call for creative insubordination and breaking down the walls between schools and communities. While the ideas are certainly not new, they continue to be both radical and necessary. And the presentation is highly enjoyable, laced throughout with humor. At his most preachy moments, for example, the narrator—a young Ayers—is shown orating from an upside-down soapbox.

Alexander-Tanner draws in a disarmingly simple, cartoony style rather than naturalistically. This choice allows him full access to the language of visual symbols. The artist transforms the rich, symbolic language of the original book into simple, effective metaphors that communicate powerful ideas in a single glance. For example, we see Ayers literally drowning in his first class of kindergarteners, an image that speaks to the experience of many new teachers, my younger self included. These visual metaphors will likely stay with readers longer than the adjoining prose. We are offered images of what teaching often is, side-by-side with what it should be. The authors reject the metaphor of the teacher as captain of a ship, for example, offering instead an image of teacher and students as explorers, walking hand-in-hand along the seashore.

There are certainly trade-offs in the translation of Ayers's book to comic form, particularly since Ayers and Alexander-Tanner keep the book at a short 126 pages. The complexity of some of Ayer's concepts is lost, while others have been left out. In particular, readers looking for practical ideas about how to make these radical practices possible in an era of increased standardization may be disappointed by the graphic novel. In the chapters on working with imposed systems of tracking and standards, the quick, cartoony rendition makes resisting and reshaping these influences seem a little too easy.

At the same time, the graphic novel is able to breathe new life into the individuals it features. As a reader, I found myself empathizing and connecting deeply with these children and educators, many smiling at me and speaking directly out of the pages. In the end, this graphic novel feels like it has been streamlined and trimmed down to its essence, much like a good haiku. As most of the book is made up of images, Ayers and Alexander-Tanner have been forced to be choosy about the words they include, picking only the most profound, the most powerful. Combined with drawings that speak to the reader on both a conscious and subconscious level, this book packs a serious punch. Although this book will be enjoyable to a wide audience, I particularly wish I had had it by my side when I first began teaching. Ayers and Alexander-Tanner offer us an inspiring, heartwarming book that serves as a reminder of what teaching should, and can, be.

To Teach: The Journey, in Comics Paperback – June 1, 2010

Purchase options and add-ons.

This graphic novel brings to life William Ayers’s bestselling memoir To Teach: The Journey of a Teacher, Third Edition . From Ayers’s early days teaching kindergarten, readers follow this renowned educational theorist on his “voyage of discovery and surprise.” We meet fellow travelers from schools across the country and watch students grow across a year and a lifetime.

To Teach is a vivid, honest portrayal of the everyday magic of teaching, and what it means to be a “good” teacher―debunking myths perpetuated on film and other starry-eyed hero/teacher fictions. Illuminated by the evocative and wry drawings of Ryan Alexander-Tanner, this literary comics memoir is both engaging and insightful. These illustrated stories remind us how curiosity, a sense of adventure, and a healthy dose of reflection can guide us all to learn the most from this world. This dynamic book will speak to comic fans, memoir readers, and educators of all stripes.

Editorial Reviews

From publishers weekly.

“An inspiring, heartwarming book that serves as a reminder of what teaching should, and can, be.”

―Harvard Educational Review

“A delightful book that will make readers smile.”

― Phi Delta Kappan

“This fascinating and, yes, educational book will certainly be of interest to teachers, but it will also teach, inspire, and entertain anyone else who picks it up.”

― Publishers Weekly

"William Ayers's new book, To Teach: The Journey, in Comics, is a treatise on educational reform in graphic format. Graphic nonfiction is a wonderful way to show, rather than just explain, complex material."

― Kerri Arsenault

“An utterly original and deliciously irreverent book that is likely to be passed from hand to hand by tens of thousands of our nation’s teachers out of the sheer joy that they will take in reading it.” ―From the Foreword by Jonathan Kozol , Savage Inequalities

"A serious book, but laced with humor... a novel approach. Required reading for all educators." ― Harvey Pekar , author, American Splendor series

“To Teach represents a fresh breeze in the educational and social science research community. It takes daring to reconceptualize entrenched practices and traditional modes of research. But it is better to find new seas upon which to sail, than old ports at which to dock. Bill Ayers and Ryan Alexander-Tanner have provided a glimpse of that new sea and for this we should be grateful.” ― Elliot Eisner , Lee Jacks Professor Emeritus and Professor Emeritus of Art, Stanford University

“Weaving in inspirational anecdotes and playful visual metaphors, To Teach, The Journey, in Comics takes us through one school year with a delightful group of young learners. In the process, Ayers and Alexander-Tanner’s collaboration cleverly illustrates the vital importance―and moral necessity―of teaching.” ―Josh Neufeld, writer/artist of A.D.: New Orleans After the Deluge

“Bill Ayers's thoughtful text is illuminated by Ryan Alexander-Tanner's picture perfect cartoons, creating an added dimension of wit and wisdom that brings comics another step forward in their evolution.” ― Peter Kuper , cartoonist and educator, books include Sticks and Stones , Diario De Oaxaca and an adaptation of Kafka's The Metamorphosis

"The perennial dance of learning that can also be teaching at its best is both brilliantly and graphically shown herein by Messrs. Ayers and Alexander-Tanner. Do keep in mind that although they can show you the right steps, you still have to listen closely to your interior music and follow its changing melodies and rhythms." ― Gary Dumm , artist, Ego & Hubris: The Michael Malice Story and American Splendor

" To Teach is great reading not only for student teachers but for anyone who has a vested interest in our education system. I especially appreciated the smack down of the dehumanizing trend to pigeonhole every other kid with some kind of ‘at risk’ syndrome! It also is a great example of how comic art is a very efficient way to communicate complex ideas.” ― Peter Bagge , comics journalist and author of the Buddy Bradley series

“Ayers organizes a classroom like Alexander-Tanner lays out each page: with inventiveness, clarity of purpose, and a close attention honoring their individual subjects. I wish I'd read this book before I started teaching and making comics a decade ago, it's chock full of practical and philosophical advice. I know this book will inspire a generation of teachers to come.” ― Lauren Weinstein , cartoonist and teacher, writer/artist, Girl Stories

" To Teach is hilarious serious and fabulous! A broad manifesto that will change many people's lives." ― Laurie Anderson , artist and musician

Abrams ComicArts and Marvel reveal new details for 'The Super Hero's Journey'

Comic Books

Abrams comicarts and marvel reveal new details for ‘the super hero’s journey’.

‘The Super Hero’s Journey’ brings the magic, fun, and cosmic energy of those early comic book masterpieces in this arty mashup.

David Brooke

Abrams ComicArts and Marvel have revealed new details on Patrick McDonnell’s upcoming book The Super Hero’s Journey . Set for release September 26, the graphic novel features classic Marvel Super Heroes, including the Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Black Panther, and Spider-Man, and muses on how comics changed his life and set him on the course to become a cartoonist.

“The Super Hero’s Journey is my graphic novel love letter to the 1960s Marvel Super Heroes and their legendary creators. It was a childhood dream come true to have my art play along with the work of the great Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Steve Ditko. I tried my best to capture the magic, fun, and cosmic energy of those early comic book masterpieces in this arty mashup,” says McDonnell.

So what’s The Super Hero’s Journey about?

We begin with the Watcher—a being who exists outside the planes of space and time, who sees every moment that has happened, will happen, or is happening throughout the cosmos—as he observes Earth and the inner burdens of the Marvel Super Heroes. As the Watcher observes the villainous plans of Doctor Doom, who is harnessing the power of the Negative Zone and slowly spreading its negativity across our planet and destroying the human spirit, Mr. Fantastic is led on a meta journey that takes him through the pages of classic comic books and across scenes familiar and unexpected. Ultimately, our heroes discover a Zen solution in an unexpected fashion—one that aligns this book with the inspiring messages of McDonnell’s other beloved and award-winning books—leaving readers with a renewed sense of love, hope, and redemption.

From  Charles Kochman , Editorial Director of Abrams ComicArts: “When we released  Fantastic Four: Full Circle  by Alex Ross, we promised that Marvel Arts was a line ‘where nothing is impossible and anything can happen.’ With  The Super Hero’s Journey , Patrick McDonnell delivers on that promise, creating something truly unique.”

The Super Hero’s Journey  seamlessly incorporates panels from classic 1960s Marvel comics written by Stan Lee and illustrated by Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Don Heck, and Vince Colletta and explores the need for connectivity, positivity, and even kindness while traveling through these classic scenes and situations. It offers an element of actualization and understanding through the lens of the globally recognized and beloved characters from the Silver Age of Comics. McDonnell’s exciting and innovative entry into the Marvel landscape is a stunning and heartwarming new adventure for fans of classic Marvel comics, as well as fans of McDonnell’s comic strip and all-ages picture books. From  Charles Kochman , Editorial Director of Abrams ComicArts: “When we released  Fantastic Four: Full Circle  by Alex Ross, we promised that Marvel Arts was a line ‘where nothing is impossible and anything can happen.’ With  The Super Hero’s Journey , Patrick McDonnell delivers on that promise, creating something truly unique.” “Patrick McDonnell’s  The Super Hero’s Journey  uses the Marvel characters and iconography in an idiosyncratic and individual manner to tell a story that is at once autobiographical, spiritual, and mythological. It’s a unique and singular reading experience that pays homage to the great works of the Silver Age while at the same time using them to make a grander statement about the human condition. It will give you the eyes of a kid again,” said Marvel VP of Publishing and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort.

Contains a preview for Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures - Sky Parade Rescue!

The Disney+ and Disney Junior show, Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures is getting its own Free Comic Book Day special. Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures - Sky Parade Rescue will expand the journeys of the series' trio of younglings. The special will also include a story from the world of Plants vs. Zombies.

A preview has been shared by StarWars , showing the latest adventure for Lys Solay, Kai Brightstar, and Nubs. The special has the creative team of Daniel José Older, Andy Duggan, Dan Jackson, and Comicraft. It will be an all-ages story featuring a familiar face: Master Yoda.

This new adventure will feature the younglings as they get the opportunity to interact with Padawans. This dynamic will present young learners with bigger learners as the trio develops worries based on their current abilities and linguistic barriers.

"This Is Our Age": The Jedi's Greatest High Republic Villains Are Now Unstoppable

Young jedi adventures jumps from screen to page thanks to dark horse comics.

the show has done an excellent job of blending preschool-appropriate storytelling with iconic Star Wars elements and thrills.

Within a new preview for the special, the Star-Hopper padawans are introduced: Quort, Farzala Tarabal, and Lula Talisola. Their personalities have not yet been seen, so their attitudes towards the young initiates have yet to be known. However, it does set up a partnership between Nubs and Quort, as selected by Master Yoda. The pair will be flying in a Vector, as the Innovator visits Tanoo. This is the latest adventure in the High Republic era, introducing new ships and details about the Jedi, as well as about the training younglings undergo to eventually become Jedi Knights. The synopsis is as follows:

Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures - Sky Parade Rescue, written by Daniel José Older with art by Andy Duggan, finds younglings Lys, Kai, and Nubs on Tenoo, eagerly anticipating the arrival of Padawans and Master Yoda.

The Star-Hopper padawans have recently begun their training with Master Yoda , while the Innovator is referred to as a " science ship ". This further pushes the exploratory nature and approach that has been seen within The High Republic. While the exact year that Young Jedi Adventures takes place is not known, the show has done an excellent job of blending preschool-appropriate storytelling with iconic Star Wars elements and thrills. With it venturing outside of television, there will now be comics available for every Star Wars fan age level, allowing parents to share the excitement of the franchise with their youngest kids.

Young Jedi Adventures' Nubs Takes the Spotlight in New Comic

The preview shows Nub being nervous that the padawans won't be able to understand him, since he is a Pooba that speaks Poobian. This is a common problem children may experience in their communities, which is often addressed via droids in the Star Wars universe. C-3PO serves as the primary translator in Star Wars media, though some characters are fluent in several languages. However, without a droid like him around, it could be harder for Nubs to feel like he fits in among other sentient species in the galaxy. The world of Star Wars continues to expand and Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures is the next promising installment within the franchise's comic storytelling.

Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures - Sky Parade Rescue will be available on Free Comic Book Day, from Dark Horse Comics.

Search Guide

Journey Into Mystery

Journey Into Mystery went through a couple of different incarnations before the much fabled issue #83 - which brought the world the introduction of one of the most iconic of Marvel superheroes... The Mighty THOR !

Beginning in 1952 after Timely Comics had given up it's superhero titles which made them popular in 1940's, and had trasitioned to the mantle of Atlas Comics, JIM was initially a suspense/horror title.

Many creative holdovers from the Timely era contributed to the book (Carl Burgos, Bill Everett, Syd Shores), along with many future and established superstars (Russ Heath, Joe Maneely, Reed Crandall, Gray Morrow).

Later, around issue #50 or so, in the lead up to the revival of Marvel Comics, the book became a sci-fi/monster comic, and many members of the famous "bullpen," (Joe Sinnott, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Dick Ayers, Don Heck - and of course Stan Lee) gradually started finding more and more work in JIM's pages.

Finally, after the success of the re-launch of the superhero genre with the Fantastic Four , Spider-Man , etc., THOR was debuted in August of 1962 and would be the main attraction for the duration of the book's life (issue #125, February 1966).

Thor would immediately go on to have his own long-running title, but it was in Journey into Mystery that he first came into prominence, with a whole universe being created around Thor, whose earthly guise was partially lame Dr. Donald Blake, and would be established as a "God on Earth" - a popular and recurring Marvel theme - with many elements from Norse mythology being prominent, and many supporting characters being drawn from that well.

It was Journey where we first saw his mythical homeland, Asgard, encountered Loki - Thor's brother and arch nemesis - and father Odin (among many others).

And of course it wouln't be Marvel if your main character was not subject to many personal conflicts, like Don Blake's ongoing tentative relationship with nurse Jane Foster. Additionally, Thor would encounter many Earth-bound baddies, such as Radioactive Man, Lava Man, Mister Hyde, The Cobra, Grey Gargoyle, Absorbing Man... and also epic encounters with Hulk and Hercules!

Thor in Journey Into Mystery set the pace for all future "God" books, and most of the issues are worth some money, depending on condition...see some going prices for your issues here, in Quality Comix's online price guide!

How to make an artistic comic strip in midjourney.

journey comic book

So there’s lots of room for creativity with MidJourney. The hardest part about using MidJourney is getting something specific. Let’s make a comic strip today. After playing around in MidJourney, I found out how to do something really interesting and cool. Let’s start with our first prompt.

Prompt: A Scene from a comic book set in the 1940s

journey comic book

It’s a very neat result. It really does look like a comic book. Let’s be a little more specific. I’m looking more for a film noir, black-and-white vibe. Also, printing color books is much more expensive.

Prompt: A scene from a comic book set in the 1940s, black and white, detective

journey comic book

This is starting to look great. Let’s put the words film noir in the prompt and see what the difference is.

Prompt: A scene from a comic book set in the 1940s, black and white, detective, film noir

journey comic book

This looks a little different. I can see some of the differences. This one is darker. You can see that there is more black in the image. Let’s add the word 9 panels and see what happens. What should happen is that 9 panels should give us more panels to look at. I’m also going to add the –quality 5 parameter to get a better render.

Prompt: A scene from a comic book set in the 1940s, black and white, detective, film noir, 9 panels –quality 5

journey comic book

There aren’t exactly 9 panels but there are more of them. Which is what we want. Again, it’s really difficult to get MidJourney to do exactly what you want.

Now comes the fun part. MidJourney makes a color image first and then makes it black and white. We can isolate one color and you can see the results. They are quite interesting.

Prompt: A scene from a comic book set in the 1940s, black and white, detective, film noir, 9 panels, yellow color only –quality 5

journey comic book

As you can see this looks amazing. We can try it with other colors to see which one would work best.

journey comic book

As you can see these are all really interesting in their own way. Yellow is by far my favorite. One thing to note is that I had to change the prompt to say color only red and color only brown. For whatever reason MidJourney didn’t want to render those colors with the other text. Let’s add one more prompt before we close this off. I’m going to add the words action shot to the prompt. It should give some more interesting panels.

Prompt: A scene from a comic book set in the 1940s, black and white, detective, film noir, action shot, 9 panels, color only yellow–quality 5 –

journey comic book

I like version 1 the best. Let’s upscale it and see what happens.

journey comic book

As you can see this looks awesome. By selecting only one color, it gives a rather artistic feel to the project. One thing to note, it is more expensive to do color books. If you’re looking to print this, you have the option of going either fully black and white or full color. It will cost more to do full color even if it’s yellow.

Remember that you can always select a portion of your image and highlight it. MidJourney will mostly understand you. It might take some work, but there are lots of artistic capabilities that you can uncover in MidJourney.

The Dark Truth Behind the Hero’s Journey: Exploring Batman, She-Hulk, and the Quest for Permanently Ending Crime

I n the realm of comic book superheroes, there exists a common aspiration shared by many iconic characters: the desire to rid their respective cities of crime and injustice permanently. Batman, the Caped Crusader of Gotham City, and She-Hulk, the sensational green powerhouse of the Marvel Universe, both embody this relentless pursuit of justice. However, a closer examination of their narratives reveals a dark truth about the inherent challenges and complexities of the hero’s journey.

In recent issues of “The Sensational She-Hulk,” writer Rainbow Rowell and artist Ig Guara reintroduce readers to Ganymede, a character whose quest for vengeance against the Blood Skrulls ended in unexpected turmoil. Ganymede’s story serves as a cautionary tale, illustrating the pitfalls of a hero’s journey coming to a definitive end. Despite avenging her fallen sisters, Ganymede finds herself adrift and purposeless, ultimately aligning with villains simply to give herself a sense of purpose once more.

This narrative mirrors the dilemma faced by superheroes like Batman. Imagine if the Dark Knight were to succeed in his lifelong mission of eradicating crime from Gotham City. While such a feat may seem noble in theory, it would leave Batman with a profound sense of emptiness, his raison d’être rendered obsolete in a world devoid of crime. Batman’s identity is inexorably linked to his crusade against injustice, and without it, he would be lost.

The perpetual nature of the hero’s journey is further underscored by the ongoing challenges faced by characters like She-Hulk. Despite her incredible strength and determination, She-Hulk grapples with the realization that her quest for justice may never truly reach a definitive conclusion. Each victory she achieves is met with new adversaries and obstacles, highlighting the cyclical nature of heroism.

Ultimately, the dark truth behind the hero’s journey is that there can never truly be an end to the fight against crime and injustice. While superheroes may achieve temporary victories and make significant strides towards their goals, the very nature of their existence ensures that their struggles will continue indefinitely. It is this perpetual struggle that defines them as heroes, inspiring hope and admiration in others.

The narratives of Batman, She-Hulk, and characters like Ganymede serve as poignant reminders of the complexities inherent in the hero’s journey. While the quest for justice may be noble and admirable, it is also fraught with challenges and uncertainties. However, it is precisely this ongoing struggle that defines the essence of heroism and underscores the timeless appeal of these iconic characters.

Why is the quest to permanently end crime portrayed as unattainable for superheroes like Batman and She-Hulk?

The quest to permanently end crime is portrayed as unattainable because it would fundamentally alter the nature of these characters and their respective storylines. For Batman, the cessation of crime in Gotham City would render his role as the Dark Knight obsolete, leaving him adrift without a purpose. Similarly, She-Hulk’s journey is characterized by ongoing challenges and adversaries, highlighting the cyclical nature of heroism.

What does Ganymede’s story in “The Sensational She-Hulk” teach us about the hero’s journey?

Ganymede’s story serves as a cautionary tale, illustrating the pitfalls of a hero’s journey coming to a definitive end. Despite achieving her goal of avenging her fallen sisters, Ganymede finds herself without purpose and ultimately aligns with villains in search of meaning. This narrative reflects the inherent challenges and complexities of the hero’s journey.

How does the perpetual nature of the hero’s journey impact characters like Batman and She-Hulk?

The perpetual nature of the hero’s journey ensures that characters like Batman and She-Hulk will continue to face new challenges and adversaries, even after achieving temporary victories. Each triumph is met with new obstacles, highlighting the ongoing struggle inherent in their roles as heroes.

Why is the ongoing struggle against crime and injustice essential to the identity of superheroes?

The ongoing struggle against crime and injustice is essential to the identity of superheroes because it defines their roles as symbols of hope and inspiration. While they may never achieve a definitive end to their quests, it is their unwavering commitment to justice that distinguishes them as heroes and resonates with audiences.

The Comic Hero’s Journey

journey comic book

You all know the Hero’s Journey, don’t you?

In the beginning was the film, and the film was Star Wars .

If you’ve never heard of it before, or just to refresh your memory, The Hero’s Journey, as described by Joseph Campbell, consists of:

  • Ordinary World
  • Call to Adventure
  • Refusal of the Call
  • Meeting With the Mentor
  • Crossing the First Threshold
  • Tests, Allies, and Enemies
  • Approach to the Inmost Cave
  • Reward (Seizing the Sword)
  • The Road Back
  • Resurrection
  • Return With the Elixir

If you think about Star Wars , it closely tracks the steps in Campbell’s Hero’s Journey. Near the beginning of the film, we meet our Hero, farmboy Luke, living in the boring old desert world of Tatooine ( Ordinary World ) when he stumbles across the holographic message from Princess Leia ( Call to Adventure ), which leads him to Obi-Wan Kenobi ( Meeting with the Mentor ) who wants him to go to Alderaan, but he Refuses the Call because he “has so much work to do” and because “it’s all so far away.” He returns home to find that his aunt and uncle have been murdered by the Empire’s Stormtroopers, so he’s off with Obi, Han and Chewy to Cross the First Threshold which leads to Approaching the Inmost Cave , the Ordeal , and finally The Road Back to the Death Star where Luke hears and heeds the voice of Obi-Wan and becomes one with the Force as Han Solo returns just in the nick of time ( Resurrection ), destroying the Death Star, and Princess Leia honors him for saving the Rebellion ( Return With the Elixir )!

But you knew all that already.

So what’s the Hero’s Journey in a comedy?

In a comedy, a comic hero or heroine also goes on a journey. In some aspects, it’s very similar to what Chris Vogler (The Writer’s Journey) and Joseph Campbell write about in their books. But in many aspects, it’s quite, quite different.

journey comic book

Throughout Star Wars , Luke is adventurous, brave, and stalwart. When he’s chasing after R2D2 and there’s the threat that the Sand People might be about, he grabs a rifle, and with no small amount of pluck tells C3PO, “Let’s take a look!”

Comic Heroes tend to be pluck-deficient.

In the Hero’s Journey, the Hero is often exceptional. Joseph Campbell writes that the adventure was not one of “discovery but rediscovery.” The godly powers sought and dangerously won are revealed to have been within the heart of the hero all the time.” He (or she) has hidden greatness within, but at the start, our heroes are unaware of their undiscovered virtues.

However, in the Comic Hero’s Journey, your protagonist, the comic hero, does not have greatness within. Your protagonist is as far from greatness within as is humanly possible, and sometimes, even more than that. He wants a “world of adventure” like he wants a hole in the head. Your protagonist is usually a dweeb or a jerk or some other kind of a misbegotten misanthrope. In Big , he’s bullied and not big enough to go on a ride with the girl of his dreams. In Groundhog Day , Bill Murray is an egotistical a-hole. In Bridesmaids , Kristen Wiig’s low self-esteem has her sleeping with a guy she knows doesn’t like her. In the Normal World, the comic hero’s initial state is flawed in some vital way; there’s a hole inside them; their way of being in the world is deeply, deeply flawed. As Ricky Gervais has said, “No one wants to see handsome, clever people do brilliant things brilliantly. Who wants to see that? You want to see a putz having a go. And failing. And coming through at the end.”

At the beginning of the Normal World, the comic hero’s life does not work, only they don’t know it! They think they’re fine, and their world is perfect. To them, it’s the normal state of affairs and for the most part they’ve accepted it. If you have a protagonist who comes out in the first act and says, “You know, I . . . I’m just not doing what I should do in life. I’m, I’m, I’m unhappy,” you’ve written a drama. Because the more aware your characters are of their own state of being, the more dramatic those moments are.

journey comic book

Rather than the inchoate unhappiness of a dramatic hero before he finds his quest, the comic hero is blithely unaware of what we in the audience can see is a stacked deck against them, a flawed existence, a screwed-up way of living.

In (500) Days of Summer , Joseph Gordon-Levitt is going through the motions writing bad greeting cards; in Bridesmaids , Kristen Wiig’s a mess with a string of failed relationships behind her; in 40-Year-Old Virgin , he’s, uh . . . well, uh . . . dammit, he’s 40 years old and he’s a virgin!

In the Comic Hero’s Journey, that’s the protagonist’s normal state. And the normal state is fucked.

INITIAL GOAL

Another big difference between the classic Joseph Campbell hero and the Comic Hero is that the classic hero often has a major overall goal that he or she tries to accomplish throughout the course of the story. In the Hero’s Journey, the hero usually has a goal in the beginning and they either achieve it—happiness. Or they don’t achieve it—tragedy. But it’s the same goal. In the beginning Luke wants to join the rebellion; guess what? He joins the rebellion. He saves the rebellion. Often, the initial goal is the end goal.

In comedy, that’s not true. Many of your protagonist’s goals in the beginning of a comedy are outer goals. These initial goals are usually selfish and shortsighted and certainly are not addressing their inner needs. (These initial goals will eventually be replaced by discovered goals as the characters transform during the course of the narrative.)

THE FLAWED OR ABSENT RELATIONSHIPS

In the Normal World, there are flawed or absent relationships . If you’re going to write a screenplay about someone who’s a worm that’s about to turn, it’s best if you don’t start them in a happy, monogamous relationship where everything’s going well. If you’re trying to build a protagonist who’s kind of a loser, having a supportive girlfriend or boyfriend undercuts their ineptitude. Your hero is living in Mom’s basement, playing Dungeons and Dragons by himself. A girlfriend? Are you kidding me? If someone’s cool enough to have a girlfriend or a boyfriend, maybe they’re not as flawed as they need to be. Even if he’s a great guy, like in Sleepless in Seattle , make sure relationships are absent or flawed. In Sleepless , his wife is dead. He doesn’t have or want to pursue another relationship. In fact, it’s ruining his life, and his son is motivated to get on the phone to call in a radio station to get him another wife. In Forgetting Sarah Marshall , Jason Segal’s cool girlfriend (Kristen Bell) dumps him right at the start. In Bridesmaids , Kristen Wiig’s hook-up is an obnoxious Jon Hamm, who won’t even let her sleep over.

CONCLUSION (AND CAVEAT)

So, what are the steps in The Comic Hero’s Journey? The steps may include The Normal World , WTF (the part where something impossible or implausible occurs which propels our hero on their journey), Reactions , Connections , New Directions , and Race to the Finish . They’re all explored in my new book, The Comic Hero’s Journey .

But first, an important caveat.

This is not a formula. It’s not a template. All these steps happen in most well-structured comedies, but not necessarily in this order. Most people think of the low point in a comedy as occurring about three-quarters of the way through the film. And it does, in most films. But not in all. In Groundhog Day , Bill Murray tries to kill himself about halfway through the movie. In Tropic Thunder , the platoon breaks up and Ben Stiller tries to go it alone again about halfway through. Other movies may skip or skimp on one step or another. In most movies, all of these elements are somewhere in the movie, but do they HAVE to be in this order? No.

There are a lot of great, idiosyncratic, atypical movies. And while most comedies begin in the Normal World and end with Race to the Finish, yours doesn’t need to. Your comic hero is on his or her own journey. The routes may be similar in many ways, but as they often say in the showroom, your mileage may vary.
