  • About Paul Gauguin Cruises Tahiti

ms Paul Gauguin

  • The most luxurious ship to sail in Tahiti on a year-round basis.
  • Only 332 guests, with a crew to guest ratio of 1 to 1.5.
  • Larger-ship, luxury conveniences with a small-ship environment.

The m/s Paul Gauguin was designed specifically to sail the shallow seas of Tahiti and French Polynesia, visiting small ports that larger ships can’t reach and effortlessly blending into the stunning natural beauty of the South Seas. She offers an extension of the informal, relaxing environment of the islands, coupled with five-star service, comfort, and luxury. Spacious suites and staterooms (more than 70% with private balconies), an onboard watersports marina, a choice of three open-seating dining venues, and an extensive spa are among her luxurious attributes. The atmosphere aboard the ship radiates warmth, informality, and Polynesian flair. If you book your cruise now, you’ll be sailing aboard The Gauguin at her finest, having recently completed a multimillion-dollar renovation. And our beloved troupe of Gauguines—local Tahitians who serve as cruise staff, entertainers, and storytellers—add the unique personality of Tahiti to every sailing.

Onboard, guests can look forwards to an informal, relaxing environment, reflective of the islands visited, without ever having to compromise on service. All suites come with Butler service, and all staterooms are comfortable, spacious, and luxurious. Even though she is one of the smaller ships currently at sea, it may come as a surprise as to how much she offers onboard. Guests will find a choice of three open-seating dining venues, an extensive spa, and even an onboard water sports marina.

Accommodation

In keeping with the opulent nature of the rest of the ship, the cabins onboard the MS Paul Gauguin are suitably luxurious. All of the spacious suites and staterooms onboard feature an ocean view, and almost 70% include private balconies, making them the perfect place to relax and unwind in comfort, whilst taking in some beautiful scenery. With suites benefiting from Butler service, and all rooms including temperature control, king-size bed (a limited number can have twin-bed configuration), bathroom with full-size bathtub and shower, bathrobes, slippers, hair dryer, TV, CD/DVD player, personal safe, refrigerator stocked with soft drinks, and more, a cabin can easily feel like a home away from home.

Food & Drink

For a ship of her size, MS Paul Gauguin offers a surprising amount of variety when it comes to dining. Guests can choose from one of three restaurants, each of which offer open-seating times. One of the true highlights of the dining onboard, however, has to be the level of service offered. The staff onboard are attentive beyond belief, but never in an intrusive manner. They work in the background, ensuring everything about the meal is to a guest's liking - from dish selected to ensuring wine glasses are always topped up - all of this is performed not only expertly, but most importantly, discreetly. Paul Gauguin can even cater to special requests, with delicious vegetarian and low-carb options available on request.

Life on Board

Whether guests are looking to take in a traditional Polynesian show, or listen to some beautiful live music, or simply unwind with a drink, they should be able to do just that onboard.

From the casino to afternoon tea, music lounge to simply lounging in the outside pool and taking in the sun, there are more ways to relax onboard than may be expected from a ship of this size.

Tahiti in the Limelight: A Journey Through Popular Culture

With its idyllic landscapes and rich cultural tapestry, Tahiti has long captivated the imagination of filmmakers, writers, and artists. From Hollywood epics and literary masterpieces to surf culture documentaries and the rise of tattooing, the allure of these islands has permeated popular culture from the 1930s to the present.

TAHITI IN FILM

The Golden Age of Hollywood

Paul Gauguin Cruises | Mutiny on the Bounty - Composite Art

One of the earliest movies in Tahiti's cinematic treasure trove is the 1935 Oscar-winning classic Mutiny on the Bounty , featuring Clark Gable as Fletcher Christian. Although much of the film was shot on California's Santa Catalina Island, it set the stage for Tahiti's allure in Hollywood. This movie's portrayal of the island's beauty and mystique made it an instant classic.

In 1962, Marlon Brando took on the role of Fletcher Christian in another adaptation of Mutiny on the Bounty . This version, famously shot on location in Tahiti, boasted opening credits with the declaration: "The Greatest Adventure Ever Lived… Becomes the Greatest Movie Ever Made." Brando’s involvement with Tahiti went beyond the screen as he fell in love with the island, later purchasing his own atoll, Tetiaroa.

Modern Adaptations and Thrillers

The 1984 film The Bounty starred Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins, bringing a contemporary twist to the enduring tale of mutiny and adventure with Tahiti taking its own starring role. And husband and wife Warren Beatty and Annette Bening shot much of 1994’s Love Affair on Tahiti and Moorea. French cinema has also embraced Tahiti with thrillers like Meurtre à Tahiti and L’ordre et le morale , which delve into the darker, more complex aspects of life on the islands. In 2022, Pacification starring Benoît Magimel won acclaim for its stunning cinematography and compelling storytelling, garnering awards for Best Actor and Best Cinematography at the Cannes Film Festival.

Surf Culture and Documentaries

Paul Gauguin Cruises | Surfer and Wave composite art

Tahiti's legendary waves have made it a mecca for surfers, immortalized in classic documentaries like The Endless Summer (1966) by Bruce Brown, which is often hailed as the crown jewel of surfing films. Other notable mentions include Riding Giants (2004) and Step Into Liquid (2003), both of which celebrate the exhilarating surf culture. With the 2024 Olympics set to feature surfing in Tahiti, the island's world-renowned waves will once again take center stage, highlighting their unique and challenging nature.

An Animated Favorite

More recent films include a little animated picture from Disney (read: huge blockbuster!) called Moana . Released in 2016, the movie draws inspiration from ancient Polynesian culture, incorporating elements of mythology, navigation, and societal values. Audiences from the young to the young-at-heart can look forward to Moana 2 , set for a November release this year, and a live-action remake expected in July 2026.

LITERARY REFLECTIONS

Tahiti's literary legacy is just as rich as its cinematic one. Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall’s Mutiny on the Bounty remains a cornerstone, as evidenced by the myriad films depicting the dramatic events that unfolded in these tropical waters.

Paul Gauguin Cruises | TahitiTourisme advertising campaign circa 1954

James A. Michener's Tales of the South Pacific , inspired by his time as a U.S. Naval historian in the South Pacific, presents a vivid picture of life on the islands during World War II. The work famously inspired the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific and its subsequent film adaptation. Michener’s Return to Paradise (1951) offers a more reflective view, exploring post-war island life before the “Jet Age” brought the onset of mass tourism in the early 1960s.

Herman Melville’s early works, Typee (1846) and Omoo (1847), draw from his experiences in the South Seas, providing a raw and adventurous look at the islands. Robert Louis Stevenson ( In the South Seas ), W. Somerset Maugham ( The Moon and Sixpence ), Jack London ( The Cruise of the Snark ), and Zane Grey ( Tales of Tahitian W aters) also penned evocative tales set in Tahiti, each capturing its unique spirit and charm. French naval officer Julien Viaud, under the pen name Pierre Loti, wrote The Marriage of Loti (1880), a poignant tale of lost love that remains a classic.

ARTISTIC INSPIRATIONS

No discussion of Tahiti in popular culture would be complete without mentioning Paul Gauguin. The French artist's vibrant, evocative works have immortalized the island’s landscapes and people, with his masterpieces displayed in galleries worldwide. Gauguin’s art also serves as a gateway to explore the broader artistic traditions of Tahiti, particularly the intricate and meaningful tattoo culture. Tattoos in Tahiti are not just body art; they are deeply rooted in the island's history and identity, a tradition that continues to influence global tattoo culture today.

5 Reasons to Sail Tahiti with Paul Gauguin

T ahiti, along with its stunning sister islands, is one of the most desired—and most enchanting, romantic destinations in the world.

Travelers wishing to experience Tahiti in the most memorable way should choose Paul Gauguin Cruises , because they bring the Tahiti you’ve always dreamed of within reach. Tahiti isn’t as great a distance as some people think. Flight times to the island is 5 hours from Auckland, 6 hours from Honolulu, 8.5 hours from Los Angeles, and 9.5 hours from Sydney.

Once onboard, guests will discover that nearly 70% of the ship’s suites and staterooms have private balconies. What’s more, all feature an ocean view, temperature control, queen-size bed (a limited number can have twin-bed configuration), bathroom with full-size bathtub and shower, TV, with DVD player, personal safe, a refrigerator stocked with soft drinks, and much more. There are also wheelchair-accessible staterooms available, and select staterooms can even accommodate three guests.

To see what’s possible, the Owner’s Suites are in a class by themselves, with 534 to 588 square feet of space and a private veranda. This suite can accommodate three guests and the bathroom includes a separate shower and a dressing area.

Aboard the Gauguin, guests in suites and staterooms in Category B and higher automatically receive the indispensable perk of Butler service, a perk that elevates your Tahiti trip to the next level. When reserving one of these accommodations, one to two Butlers will always be available to assist you. They can unpack your luggage, arrange to have your clothes pressed, and make reservations at the spa or for dinner in La Veranda or Le Grill. Butler can even arrange for a private car or make lunch reservations at a local restaurant—the ultimate in individualized service.

Once you have booked a qualifying suite or stateroom, you can choose from an assortment of beverages, bar snacks, fruits, newspapers, and bedding‚—which will be waiting for you as soon as you embark.
