Built in 1593 to 1596 by the Portuguese, Fort Jesus is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Mombasa's top tourist attractions. Italian architect Cairati designed the structure, which is one of the world's finest examples of 16th-century Portuguese military architecture.

Built in the shape of a man, the fort was given the name of Jesus as a clear religious reference. The fort changed hands nine times between 1631 and 1875 before finally resting with the British.

Although partially ruined, Fort Jesus houses a museum built over the former barracks for the garrison. Exhibits include a vast collection of ceramics and pottery reflecting the various cultures that traded along the coast.

Fort Jesus has many battlements and ruined buildings within the compound, including Omani house, built in the late 18th century, which houses Omani jewelry and displays on Swahili life. The Passage of Arches was cut through the coral to give access to the sea.

Haller Park Mombasa is a hit with animal lovers. Formerly called Bamburi Nature Trail, this inspirational project began in 1971, when Dr. René Haller transformed the abandoned limestone quarries here into a thriving nature reserve.

Dr. Haller increased the mineral content of the soil, planted trees, added a fish farm, and created a wildlife park where each animal has a function within the flourishing ecosystem. Wildlife found here includes giraffes, Cape buffalo, zebras, waterbucks, and hippos. A highlight is the giraffe feeding, but be sure to check the times before visiting.

The park was also home to a famous interspecies couple that became an Internet sensation after the 130-year-old tortoise, Mzee, adopted Owen, an orphaned hippo.

Birds are also abundant in the park. More than 160 species have been introduced to the area including weaver birds, cranes, pelicans, and storks.

Walking and cycling paths wind through the groves of casuarina, and a reptile park, palm garden, butterfly pavilion, and crocodile pens are other attractions.

If you want to see more wildlife, Nguuni Wildlife Sanctuary is about a 15-minute drive from Haller Park. Here you can enjoy close encounters with giraffes, and see ostriches, eland, oryx, and many species of birds. It's also one of the most popular picnic sites in Mombasa.

One of the busiest of Kenya's offshore reserves, Mombasa Marine National Park protects mangroves, seagrass beds, sandy beaches, and coral reef. Diving and snorkeling are popular things to do - especially north of Mombasa, from Mtwapa Creek south to the entrance of Likoni.

Guided forest walks are available, and you can cool off in the swimming hole and picnic area at the scenic Sheldrick Falls on the Machenmwana River .

Nestled in lush rainforest, Gedi was one of the ancient Arab towns along the East African Coast, and was probably rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries. Today, you can tour the ruins where the Great Mosque, the Palace, coral-stone houses, and pillar tombs have been unearthed.

The houses in Gedi display a traditional Swahili style, and some have ancient drawings on their plaster walls. Ming Chinese porcelain and glass as well as glazed earthenware from Persia indicate trade links and a taste for luxury by those who prospered here. These items, as well as Spanish scissors and Swahili cultural artifacts, are on display in the on-site museum.

The Arabuko-Sokoke Forest is East Africa's largest remaining indigenous coastal forest. The forest plays host to plenty of rare species, including birds, butterflies, amphibians, and plants.

More than 260 species of birds are found here, including several threatened species such as the spotted ground thrush and Clarke's weaver.

Rare mammals that call the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest home are the golden-rumped elephant shrew, bushy-tailed mongoose, and Ader's duiker. The forest is a favorite picnic spot for residents and visitors.

About 112 kilometers from Mombasa, Watamu is a Swahili fishing village that has blossomed into a small beach resort and offers superb snorkeling and diving. The coast is broken into three coves divided by rocky headlands.

More than 600 species of fish are found within the marine reserve, and whale sharks and manta rays are seasonal visitors to the reef. Watamu is also a vital turtle breeding area with green and hawksbill turtles as the primary species.

Glass-bottomed boats transport you to the reefs and provide a window to the kaleidoscopic world of coral and fish. For travelers looking for something other than snorkeling and diving, Watamu offers windsurfing, relaxing on the beach, dolphin-watching trips, and thriving rock pools.

Offshore from Watamu is the southern part of the Malindi Marine National Reserve . The forests of the Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve and the Swahili ruins of Gede are also close by.

Kilifi is a small beach resort on the banks of Kilifi Creek where yachts bob about in the breeze. One of the top tourist attractions here is the Mnarani Ruins, an ancient Swahili coastal settlement dating back to the early 14th century. A huge baobab tree among the ruins is rumored to be the largest on the Kenyan coast.

Kalifi is also home to a top-notch golf club. At one time, Kilifi could only be reached by ferry, but in recent years a bridge was constructed to make it more accessible.

1 . Haller Park

Tourists looking for a relaxing day at the park should drop by Haller Park. The nature park in Bamburi has a botanical garden and plenty of green space for picnics and games. Giraffes, hippos, and crocodiles are some animals living in the park.

The best time to visit is in the afternoon, around 3 pm, during feeding time. Note: The entrance fee is paid through mobile money ( M-pesa ) only, so plan accordingly.

2. Fort Jesus

This old fort was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and served as their headquarters until they were forced out by the British in 1891. It was declared a national monument in 1957 and has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011. The fort also houses museums about African history, art, and culture during colonial times.

3. Old Town

Old Town neighbors the popular Fort Jesus and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Some tourists spend their time here while visiting Mombasa. The district, stretching about 72 hectares (177.92 acres), contains many historical buildings, some dating back to the 18th century. It also features shops selling textiles, ceramics, jewelry, and leather goods. Mombasa’s old port and post office are also found here.

4. Mombasa Tusks (Mapembeni)

Mombasa Marine National Park is a national reserve and a marine park situated in Mombasa in Kenya. Spread over an area of 2500 acres or 10 km square, the reserve of the park spans over 49.400 acres.

Highlights: Established in the year 1986, the Mombasa Marine National Park encloses within it a part of the back reef, lagoon as well as the reef crest habitats of the Bamburi Nyali fringing reef. The Things to Do in Mombasa are many. Before we go into them, lets start with a little backgorund information. Mombasa is an Island on the Indian ocean and the capital of the wider Mombasa county that consists of several other nearby smaller islands. Mombasa is Kenya’s second largest metropolitan area after Nairobi and is located along the eastern coast of Kenya. Mombasa was at first referred to as “Manbasa” – meaning an Island of war. This was because the island was the center stage for countless wars of occupation by the early settlers (Arabs, Portuguese, Locals and the British).

Mombasa offers tourists a chance to experience its rich seafaring traditions, coral reefs, water sports, seas food, architectural wonders, amazing hotels and palm tree/white sand beaches. There is so much to see and experience that traveler’s multiple times only to discover something they didn’t know existed. We shall discuss the details in the following chapters. Tourist Attractions in Mombasa

Check out the Ship traffic at Mama Ngina Drive: If you free in one of the evenings and wondering where to go for relaxation as you watch the sun go down, then Mama Ngina Drive is one place to consider. The park is scenic and allows you to watch all the different types of ship that dock in Mombasa. Many of the residents go to Mama Ngina to pass time and as they count the number of ships entering and leaving the country. If you go during the right time of the year, the ship traffic can be overwhelming. The place gets crowds during sometimes but there is security. If you get hungry while at the park, you can visit one of the restaurants in the area for soft drinks and tasty sea food.

Swimming with dolphins and in the different beaches: The north coast beaches are easy to recommend because they are located close to the airport and the city itself. The beaches include Shanzu, Bamburi and Nyali. These beautiful beaches are characterized by clear waters and beautiful green palm trees. Walk along the beautiful nature trails: The different islands that make up Mombasa are blessed with amazing flora and fauna. Apart the beautiful scenery and natural vegetation along the beaches, tourists can also spot creatures like monkeys, reptiles and birds. The nature trails close to the Malindi – Mombasa highway is excellent for those who want to experience the beautiful landscape and scenery in the island.

Ride on a Tuk-Tuk ride: Similar to those in most Asian countries, but offering something different. The ride will take you through the busiest streets of the islands and then to the ocean itself if you choose. They are not the most comfortable but you will have fun.

Shimba Hills National Reserve: This reserve is not found in Mombasa but still worth visiting especially if you want to see some of Africa’s famous animals without going too far away from the magical ocean shores. The Reserve is found 33 kilometers away from Mombasa town and consists of savanna, woodlands, ponds, waterfalls and tropical rain forest. This park has one of the highest population of elephants in the country but visitors can also spot antelopes and leopards. It is possible to register for guided nature walks in the forest to see rare and endangered species of plants like orchids and cycads. After seeing enough of the reserve, you can cool off by either swimming or having a picnic close to the Machenmwana River and the Sheldrick Falls.

Bombolulu Cultural Centre and Workshop: This cultural Centre begun as a project to take care of the physically disabled. The facility cultural Centre and 4 workshops. Now the Centre helps showcase the cultural heritage of the different tribes in Kenya through great artworks – wood carvings, necklaces and wristbands. While there, you will also get an idea about how the tribes in Kenya lived in the olden days, their dress code and the tools they used for hunting. You can go and attend cultural performance or check out the handicrafts, jewelry, leather crafts, wood carving and clothing at the workshop. Since this is a charity organization, visiting is one way of showing support and helping community. You can also support the project by buying one of the products on sale or eat from their restaurant.

Arabuko-Sokoke National Forest: As the largest remaining coastal forest in East Africa, Arabuko-Sokoke is blessed with incredible biodiversity – including amphibians, butterflies and birds. Over 260 species of birds have been recorded in the forest among which include the threatened Clarke’s weaver and the spotted ground thrush. The forest also hosts rare mammals like the bushy-tailed mongoose, Ader’s duiker and golden-rumped elephant shrew. Arabuko-Sokoke National Forest is an excellent place to go for birding, picnics and nature walks. Birders should take note.

Nguuni Nature Sanctuary: This is a wildlife sanctuary located next to Nguuni Tatu Hills. Tourists who are interested in nature, wildlife and birding will find visiting this sanctuary very rewarding. Expect to see ostriches, giraffes, Oryx, elands and other antelope species. The best time to visit is in the evening. Check out the ruins of Gede: Gede is an ancient town built during the time when Arabs ruled the coast – around the fifteenth and sixteenth century. The town is now in ruins but provides an opportunity to learn about the kind of life lived by the Arabs centuries ago. During your tour of the ruins, you will see a great mosque, a palace, tombs and several houses made of coral stones. There are also Swahili style houses with old drawings on the walls. Visitors to Gede can also see Chinese and Persian architectural works which indicate they had a taste for high-end things. More of the artifacts are displayed in a museum on the island.

Kipepeo Butterfly Project : Kipepeo actually means butterfly. This facility in found in a forest near the entrance to the Gede Ruins. The communities living in the area were offered an opportunity to breed unique species of butterflies at the Arabuko Sokoke Forest. The project gives farmers caterpillars which are then fed on leaves from the forest. Once they change into pupae, they are sold back to the project. Once they reach maturity, the butterflies are sent to centers of display across the globe. The Kipepeo Butterfly Project has helped raise the incomes of members of the community living in the area.

Go shopping or visiting the top markets: As a port that serves five countries of East Africa, Mombasa is an excellent place to do your shopping.  Regardless of whether you are looking for souvenir, artifacts, household items, clothes, electronics or food, Mombasa has it all.

If you mingle more with the everyday people and away from the high end shopping malls, you should go to the Old McKinnon Market. It is here that you will understand why Mombasa is considered a true multicultural town . Watch as the local people go about with business and try out some of the fresh local fruits. Visit the Theatre or Casinos: For the best local movies or current international blockbusters, you should visit a cinema theatre or one of the movie houses. Visit Kilifi: This is an isolated resort on the shores of Kilifi Creek. It was once only reachable by ferry but a bridge was constructed hence exposing it to the main islands. The key attractions here are the Mnarani Ruins. This was an old local settlement of Swahili speakers right from the early fourteenth century. A large baobab tree can be found in the island and is said to be the largest in the entire coast of Kenya. Chicago’s iconic ‘Bean’ sculpture reopens to tourists after nearly a year of construction

CHICAGO — One of Chicago’s most popular tourist attractions known as “The Bean” reopened to the public Sunday after nearly a year of renovations and construction.

Construction started in August last year, and fencing around the iconic sculpture limited closeup access to visitors. The work on the plaza surrounding the sculpture included new stairs, accessible ramps and a waterproofing system, according to the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.

The bean-shaped sculpture by artist Anish Kapoor is formally known as “Cloud Gate” and weighs 110 tons (99.8 metric tons).

It’s a busy tourist hub near Michigan Avenue, particularly for selfies with its reflective surface inspired by liquid mercury. Views of skyscrapers and crowds are reflected on the Millenium Park sculpture.

“Visitors can once again have full access to Chicago’s iconic Cloud Gate by Anish Kapoor,” city officials said in a Sunday statement. “Come back and get your #selfie!”

For decades, visitors flocking to New York for Pride every June found plenty of packed bars and jubilant parties but no easy way to engage with the city’s rich L.G.B.T.Q. history.

Even the area around Sheridan Square, the center of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising that catalyzed the gay liberation movement, had little to see for anyone interested in the queer past.

“The guest experience when they got there was a bar, a bench and a park,” said Ross Levi, the executive director of the New York State Division of Tourism . “That isn’t terribly helpful for somebody who comes during the day when the bar is closed. It’s not terribly helpful if you have kids that you want to bring and learn about the history of the area.”

That’s about to change with a new visitors’ center at Stonewall National Monument , in Greenwich Village, set to open on June 28, the 55th anniversary of the night in 1969 when a police raid set off several days of riots. The center will serve as a focal point of the eight-year-old, 7.7-acre monument , which includes Christopher Park and several surrounding streets.

The building that houses the new center sits next door to the current Stonewall Inn bar (which opened in the early 1990s). But back in the late 1960s, an earlier bar of the same name occupied both spaces, which were connected by an interior doorway. Not long after the riots , the original Stonewall Inn went out of business, and the connecting doorway was bricked up.

The storefront next to the current Stonewall Inn stood empty in 2022, when Diana Rodriguez, the chief executive of Pride Live , an L.G.B.T.Q. advocacy group, took over the space. Nail salon chairs from the previous tenant still lined the walls.

Ms. Rodriguez raised more than $3 million, much of it from corporate donors, to build the visitors’ center, which her organization will manage. The center will offer National Park Service rangers working at the monument a much-needed roof over their heads (they currently have to use local businesses’ restrooms) and give visitors of all ages a place to share in the monument’s history through a number of exhibits (free admission).

“My hope is that people come in, learn more about Stonewall,” Ms. Rodriguez said. “And then, at the end of their time here, that they feel compelled to take action.”

The new visitors’ center in Manhattan is just one site that offers a glimpse into New York City’s queer history. Here are four more, one in each other borough.

Staten Island

The Alice Austen House Museum

In 1994, the activist group Lesbian Avengers marched to a charming white cottage on Staten Island’s eastern waterfront chanting, “Alice was a lesbian, and a lesbian she’ll always be.” That house, originally built in 1690, once belonged to Alice Austen, a groundbreaking documentary photographer who captured a quickly changing New York City at the turn of the 20th century. It became a museum after her death in 1952.

What the Avengers were protesting was the institution’s unwillingness to acknowledge that Austen lived there for 30 years with her partner, Gertrude Tate, and used the property as a studio for the many pictures she took of the couple’s nontraditional friend group.

“I felt like it was incredibly important for the house to have a lesbian leading the interpretation,” said Victoria Munro, who took over the museum’s direction in 2017 and has been spearheading the effort to bring to light Austen’s contributions to L.G.B.T.Q. history.

Now, visitors ($5 suggested admission) can admire more than 7,000 of Austen’s works, including photos challenging norms of gender and sexuality, as well as rotating photo exhibitions, often by queer artists, and a garden celebrating the gender fluidity of plants . Lesbian Avengers are back, too: The photographer Saskia Scheffer ’s images of the 1994 protest are being exhibited on the house’s lawn for at least the rest of the summer.

The ‘People’s Beach’ at Jacob Riis Park

For decades, the People’s Beach , a slice of Jacob Riis Park on the Rockaway Peninsula, has been the spot where queer New Yorkers can shed layers and inhibitions without unwelcome stares, piling up so close to one another that it’s sometimes hard to see sand between the colorful towels and sunshades (free admission; $20 daily parking fee).

“It’s very warm, and it’s a real community,” said Timothy Leonard, the Northeast program manager for the advocacy group National Parks Conservation Association , who learned to ride his bike on the boardwalk at Riis and, later, as a teenager grappling with his gay identity, found a sense of belonging on the beach. “It’s just a place of celebration.”

In recent years, the beach, part of Gateway National Recreation Area, has been undergoing some major transformations.

The 1932 Jacob Riis Bathhouse, which was shuttered for decades, is scheduled to reopen next summer, after the completion of an ambitious $50 million development project . The exterior of the Art Deco building and interior tile work are being restored, and new amenities will include hotel rooms, a bar, a courtyard pool and lounge area, and a rooftop restaurant.

Severe erosion has closed some areas of the beach this summer, but that’s unlikely to dampen the queer-friendly spirit, even if the party has to shift down the sand.

Marsha P. Johnson State Park

Marsha P. Johnson, an activist and transgender icon who died in 1992, is not known to have spent time on the Williamsburg waterfront. Yet she made history there, when in 2020 the seven-acre East River State Park was renamed for her — the first New York state park to honor an openly L.G.B.T.Q. person.

“The renaming opened the door to reimagine the park,” said Leslie Wright, the state parks regional director for New York City. The park was remodeled not only to be more resilient against climate change, but also to honor Johnson’s legacy, with input from the local and L.G.B.T.Q. communities, Johnson’s family, and public art consultants.

The park’s entrance is now marked by a colorful ornamental gateway reminiscent of the flower crowns Johnson wore, along with the phrase “Pay it no mind” — her favorite retort, including to a judge who asked her what her middle initial stood for. Signs dedicated to transgender history and awareness line the pathways.

Aside from offering a stunning view of the Manhattan skyline Marsha P. Johnson State Park hosts the popular Brooklyn open-air food festival Smorgasburg (Saturdays) as well as a range of L.G.B.T.Q.-centric events for Pride Month.

Woodlawn Cemetery

Among the many prominent New Yorkers buried in the 400 acres of rolling hills at Woodlawn Cemetery, a National Historic Landmark, are those who contributed to L.G.B.T.Q. history, such as the poet Countee Cullen , a teacher of the openly gay writer James Baldwin ; Herman Melville , whose works like “Moby Dick” and “Billy Budd” are suffused with homoeroticism; and the suffragists Carrie Chapman Catt and Mary Garrett Hay , life partners for decades, who are buried side by side.

“It’s moving to know that there were people who lived these lives very bravely, heroically in the past,” said Ken Lustbader, a co-founder of the NYC LGBT Historic Sites Project . “Without the support systems that exist today, but paving the way for the visibility and allies that we have today through their actions.”

Each year for Pride, his organization offers a trolley tour of the cemetery, highlighting the stories behind some of the burial sites and making them more visible by placing rainbow flags next to them.
