Add to My Trip

With the distance to be traveled and smaller onboard group, the Kenai Fjords Northwestern Fjord Cruise feels more like an adventurous expedition than a tourist cruise. The vessel, a triple-deck boat with two spacious cabins and outdoor viewing decks, departs the Seward Small Boat Harbor in the morning. From the moment the ship leaves the dock, passengers are treated to potential wildlife sightings, such as otters, shy seals, seabirds, and eagles. Lucky groups may even spot the spray of a whale, or the flip of an orca's tail on the way out of Resurrection Bay.

Landscape lush with plants and wildlife.

There is no single stretch of smooth coastline in this wild place. Every foot is craggy, jagged, and varied, a product of scouring glaciers and crashing oceans. It's a wonder the landscape is as lush with plants and wildlife as it is. Cliffsides are capped by spruce trees and blanketed in moss. Droves of migrating seabirds make their nests in the high rocks and seals haul out on pebble beaches.

The tour boat cruises around the Chiswell Islands on its way into calm waters in Northwestern Fjord. Seven glaciers pour from the mountains here. The boat captain pulls within a safe distance of the ones reaching water, their massive faces towering hundreds of feet over the bay. Lunch is served in this spectacular setting. After hours exploring the isolated fjord, the boat makes the return journey through the eastern reaches of the 3.4-million-acre Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge and back into Seward.

The Kenai Fjords Northwestern Fjord Cruise boat has two heated indoor cabins with large windows and comfortable seating, plus outdoor viewing decks on the bow and stern. No smoking is allowed on the boat.

Lunch is served midway through the voyage. It includes a chicken wrap, chips, fruit, granola bar, and a cookie. A vegetarian lunch option is available when requested in advance. Additional snacks, hot and cold drinks, and alcoholic beverages are available for purchase.

What to Bring

To make the most of views and fresh air on the exterior decks, it is important to dress in layers for this tour. Bring a rain jacket, hat, and gloves. Wear warm base layers and rubber-soled shoes. Even on a sunny day the air coming off a glacier can be quite chilly. Be sure to bring a camera and binoculars. If seasickness is a concern, err on the side of caution and take motion sickness medicine.

Special Instructions

Check in at the tour office in the Small Boat Harbor one hour prior to departure. The tour office provides luggage storage if needed.

A Once-in-Alaska Experience

We’ve been exploring the magic of Kenai Fjords since 1978 — we’re leaders, trail-blazers and the most experienced company in the area. From the waters of Resurrection Bay to the distant fjords and glaciers, a lifetime of passion and adventure comes together with every tour.

Your adventure in Kenai Fjords begins at the harbor in beautiful Seward, Alaska. Check in at our central office and enjoy the sights and sounds of the lively waterfront. When it’s time to board, head down the dock to your vessel, where you’ll be greeted by our team of deckhands.

The journey begins as you sail out of the Seward harbor—watch for the resident bald eagle and seals! From here, different tours take different directions. As Resurrection Bay opens into the rugged Gulf of Alaska, our exploration into Kenai Fjords National Park deepens.

No matter the tour you choose, you’ll have plenty of wildlife-watching opportunities, see stunningly craggy coastlines, meet our enthusiastic and knowledgeable team of deckhands, learn and discover along with our passionate captains and explore the majesty that is Kenai Fjords.

Wildlife Galore

From the mighty (humpback whales and orcas!) to the tiny (puffins!) you can see them all on our tours. Sea otters, Dall’s porpoises, Steller sea lions, harbor seals and loads of whales—it’s a marine mammal delight out here in the waters off Kenai Fjords.

In the sky above, keep an eye out for bird life—like bald eagles, black oystercatchers, graceful murres and those adorable orange-footed and ginger-beaked puffins.

We are passionate about whale watching and wildlife spotting in Kenai Fjords. It’s what gets our hearts pumping each and every day. Our captains take you on a full-time search for wildlife and our deckhands come loaded with insights and stories to share. Discover how the Kenai Fjords are alive. And keep your cameras ready!

Wonders of Whale Watching

Kenai Fjords whale watching is an adventure in both patience and adrenaline. Our captains and deckhands have a deep passion for and knowledge about these majestic creatures and the clean waters they visit each summer. We frequently spot humpback and orca whales, often in pods. Sometimes they’ll breach. Sometimes they’ll playfully slap their fins and other times they’ll ever-so-gracefully show their flukes. You may even spot some bubble-net feeding!

Fin whales, gray whales , minke and sei whales have also been seen in the waters off the coast of Kenai Fjords National Park.

Whales can be curious and playful. They can gather around our boats, or we can glide to the side of them—always maintaining a safe distance, of course. Sometimes, it’s like they’re smiling for the cameras!

WHERE GLACIERS MEET THE SEA

WHERE GLACIERS MEET THE SEA

Seeing a tidewater glacier up close is a thrill. Located in the remote and remarkable corners of coastal Kenai Fjords, this is where blue waters meet giant walls of ice.

In Kenai Fjords National Park, over half of the landmass is covered by the enormous Harding Icefield, a thousand-foot block of ice that dates back to the last Ice Age. The Harding spills out in all directions in the form of glaciers. Some stretch northwest into rugged hills of the Kenai Peninsula. Others—five of them, to be exact—reach as far as the sea along the craggy coast of the Gulf of Alaska.

The Northwestern, Holgate and Aialik tidewater glaciers can all be seen with Kenai Fjords Tours.

Looking up from the deck of your boat, you’ll also see the enormous white gems that are the park’s alpine glaciers. They are formed on the many mountainsides and push slowly down, through the valleys.

Valley glaciers are nestled in valleys and don’t reach the sea. Often, they terminate in large, freshwater lagoons. The Bear valley glacier, seen on Kenai Fjords Tours, is the largest glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park.

Kenai Fjords Tours operates the largest day cruise fleet in Southcentral Alaska, including three custom-built, 82.5-foot catamarans: the M/V Aialik Voyager, the M/V Orca Voyager and the newest vessel in the fleet christened in 2015—the M/V Callisto Voyager. Designed for wildlife and glacier viewing, a smooth ride, environmental friendliness and fuel efficiency, the catamarans use up to 40 percent less fuel than older vessels.

The 9 ships in the fleet hold up to 150 passengers and feature multi-level, walk-around viewing decks, spacious heated cabins, large windows, comfortable indoor seating for all guests and a snack bar. All vessels are restroom-equipped and the newer vessels, as well as the recently, renovated Fox Island Day Lodge, were designed to accommodate guests with limited mobility.

Kenai Fjords Tours has made a commitment to environmental sustainability, implementing a program to recycle used motor oil on all ships and by disposing of waste from the vessels at the dock instead of through a marine release whenever available at the Seward Harbor. The company also utilizes an alternative energy system on Fox Island, recycles at all its facilities and has switched to light timers and energy efficient bulbs at all locations.

The Kenai Fjords Tours Fleet is Adventure Green Alaska certified. Adventure Green Alaska (AGA) is a voluntary certification program of the Alaska Travel Industry Association (ATIA) for sustainable tourism businesses operating in Alaska that meet standards of economic, environmental, and social sustainability.

A most wonderful tour on a beautiful boat with an amazingly friendly and helpful crew. The sights and sounds were everything they were predicted to be and we checked every box as to wildlife sightings. You name and it we saw it. If I could give a higher rating than 5 stars I would. LOVED the whole experience and especially the captain's narratives on geology, history, and the like.

5 Amazing Outdoor Adventures On The Kenai Peninsula In Alaska

A laska is vast, indescribably beautiful, and has abundant wildlife. Picking a jumping-off spot to explore the last frontier can seem daunting due to the size of the state. Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula is the perfect place to start if you love outdoor adventures, ease of travel, and drop-dead gorgeous scenery.

The Kenai Peninsula is not like any place on the planet. The word “majestic” doesn’t give this place credit. If you want to explore unspoiled trails and see animals, mountains, and rivers — and a glacier — make this your next destination! Kenai is known for its exceptional scenery, wildlife, rivers, oceans, fishing, and hiking. Visit where Alaska locals come to play!

Recently, I flew to Alaska for 48 hours just to climb a glacier! My quick journey was jam-packed with many activities and many stops along the way.

1. The Seward Highway

Just about every turn on the Seward Highway offers places to stop and see wildlife. You can photograph animals and birds, take a stroll on a path or boardwalk, and search for animals.

Potter Marsh is a beautiful, easy, popular trail for bird watching and you can also see salmon swimming under the Rabbit Creek Bridge . Another great spot to see spawning salmon is at the Williwaw Creek Fish Viewing Platform . Depending on the time of year, you can easily walk on the platform (wheelchair-accessible) over several deep pools of clear water and watch and learn about the fish and their natural history and behaviors. Although the drive only takes 2 hours, add extra time for each viewing spot! The best part about all the lookouts is they are free !

Continue your drive through the beautiful Sitka spruce coniferous forests looking for moose in the meadows and bald eagles perched on treetops. The Bear Creek Weir salmon project is another great place to see salmon swimming upstream. Just off the highway is local wildlife recuperating at the Alaska Wildlife Center and it too shouldn’t be missed!

2. Beluga Whales

Pull over at mile-marker 110 along the Seward Highway to stop at Beluga Point . Check out this lookout in Turnagain Bay to see beluga whales and surfers riding the Bore Tide . Depending on the time of year and tide in Turnagain Bay, you might be lucky to see beluga whales frolicking in the water!

3. Exit Glacier

The Exit Glacier is one of 40 glaciers that make up the Harding Icefield . It’s probably the most popular outdoor destination for visitors to the Kenai Peninsula. It’s also one of the most visited glaciers in the world because of its easy accessibility. It’s favored because it’s close to a visitor center and a parking lot that is accessible by road. Easily a 10–15 minute drive out of Seward, you can walk right up to the glacier and see the dense, blue ice and maybe hear it crackle! The free parking lot fills up quickly, so plan on arriving early. There are also hourly shuttles available from the town of Seward.

Two Ways To View The Glacier

Both routes to view the Exit Glacier require walking. A very well maintained, groomed trail leads from the visitor center in the parking lot to the “toe” of the glacier. There is a 2-mile loop (wheelchair-accessible) called the Glacier View Loop . It has views to see the outwash plain and the glacier’s descent. You can continue around the loop and see part of the exposed rock and the glacier itself.

There are markers showing the glacier’s receding movement during the past 120 years. You’ll also see informational signs about the plant life. At the entrance to the trails is a chalkboard for visitors to share with others their daily wildlife sightings. The rangers also give guided tours chock-full of fabulous information as well as a self guided audio tour on the Alaska App .

Pro Tip: For a good photo-op in front of the glacier, walk the Edge of the Glacier Trail (the lower trail).

4. Harding Icefield Trail

This hike is definitely for fit climbers and is strenuous, but the journey is worth the climb! The trail/loop is 8.2 miles long and traverses all types of geography while you parallel the Exit Glacier. The challenging aspect of this hike is the vertical height climb in a fairly short distance, which makes it steep! The total ascent is 3,500 feet in vertical elevation over 4 miles. There is no way to sugar coat this, it’s steep and a tough climb! If you add the distance from the parking lot, it’s an 8.8-mile hike. The National Park Service recommends 6–8 hours and it’s best to leave early in the day.

No special equipment is required, but walking sticks really help on the descent. A day backpack with water, snacks, bug spray, a camera, and light clothes to layer up are essential items to bring. There are trail markers along the entire loop with stops and turn-around locations for those who don’t want to go to the top. As you ascend the trail, your path will take you through switchbacks, meadows, across creeks, through valleys, and ultimately to the top of the trail. Along the way, there are many places to stop and see the glacier up close. The amount of wildlife on this journey is abundant. I lost count of how many marmots and birds we saw. If you sit quietly at one of the many river crossings, you just might see a beaver! The views are spectacular and seeing a black bear traversing the glacier was a sight I’ll never forget.

If you happen to climb when there is still snow on the ground, the rangers mark the trail with small orange flags to keep hikers on course. Plan ahead for inclement weather, just in case!

Consider visiting the glacier with an expert guide if you want an up-close ice experience.

Pro Tip: Bring an extra clean pair of socks to wear for the descent. There are black and brown bears and it is recommended to carry bear spray.

Seward is a port city settled on an inlet of the peninsula and is the gateway to the Kenai Fjords National Park . This small, quaint town is a great place to jump off for cruises and boat tours to see the Kenai Fjords. There are many places to stay and a great variety of restaurants and activities; plan to spend a full day in this wonderful town.

The downtown center is one of the few intact “Main Streets” in the entire state. It really depicts what life was like at a coastal “territory” town. Now, it has a charming walking map highlighting cute shops, yummy coffee houses , and points of interest. There is a very interactive Sea Aquarium at the end of Main Street for all ages. After a full day of exploring Seward, indulge yourself with worldly prized local fish. When it comes to local seafood , it’s going to be difficult to choose just one!

How To Get To The Kenai Peninsula

Fly to anchorage.

Flying into Anchorage Airport ( ANC ) is convenient since it’s accessible from almost every major hub in the U.S. There is an abundant choice of hotels for every price range.

Drive To The Kenai Peninsula

The easiest and most popular destination to reach on the peninsula is the town of Seward . A smooth, quick 2-hour drive beginning in Anchorage along the Seward Highway has many scenic stops along the way. The drive to Seward is gorgeous. The first half of the drive parallels the Turnagain Inlet . The town of Homer is another popular destination and is about 5 hours by car from Anchorage.

Pro Tip: There is a scenic train from Anchorage to Seward for Alaska cruisers.

Although my trip to the Kenai Peninsula was quick, I felt like I really got to experience a slice of Alaska life. I saw scenery, wildlife, and had fabulous local food. I’m not sure what I liked best! I’m definitely going back to explore this beautiful, rugged, unspoiled corner of the world. Visit the peninsula any time of the year because a true Alaska experience awaits you.

Nothing at the moment that I am aware of. Booking around US Thanksgiving or President's Day have codes but I am not aware of any this time of year.

You might want to have a look at Toursaver Coupon Book for 2024. They do offer discount coupons including for Major Marine among many other tours/lodgings throughout Alaska, BUT the book costs $100. So you'd have to ensure that the value you'd get from using coupons at least covers the cost of the book. More info: https://toursaver.com/alaska-deals/ Be sure to read the small print, and note that the vendor must be the one to tear out the coupon: it is void otherwise.

Just don't make the mistake of "settling" for a tour or lodging simply because you have a coupon for it. Not worth saving money if you later regret you didn't stick with your first choice.....

Also I've seen some lodgings offer a discount if you buy a cruise or tour through them. Near Seward would be Windsong Lodge, Nauti Otter, Bear Lake B&B, and at least one other but can't recall the name right now....

Exit Glacier | Janessa Anderson

Kenai fjords.

Kenai Fjords became a National Park in 1980 in order to protect the Harding Icefield and its outflowing glaciers and coastal fjords. At approximately 600 square miles, the Harding Icefield is the largest icefield wholly contained within the United States.

Glaciers, earthquakes, and ocean storms have crafted the Park’s architecture, resulting in a vivid landscape. A birder’s paradise, visitors flock to this temperate rainforest to view the abundant wildlife, watch active glaciers, and experience the trails and backwoods adventures. For more information, reference the  Kenai Fjords National Park website .

Exit Glacier

Exit Glacier is the only part of Kenai Fjords National Park accessible by road. Here you can stroll the trails, walk very close to an active glacier, or take a ranger-led walk. It is a place where you can witness up close how glaciers re-shape a landscape and learn how plant life reclaims the barren rocky land exposed by a glacier’s retreat. The Exit Glacier Nature Center includes hands-on exhibits and an Alaska Geographic book store. Exit Glacier is open year-round, but the road is closed to vehicle traffic upon the arrival of snow (usually Oct through mid-May). The glacier is several miles from the closure gate and can not be seen from the turn-around point. Winter access includes snow machines, dogsleds, hikers, and cross-country skiers.

Boat / Kayak to the Park

Boat tours into the National Park run seasonally from late spring until early fall. Local companies offer a variety of itineraries and departure times – all from the easily-accessible Seward harbor.

For those wishing to get even closer to the Park’s wonders, kayak guides lead group and custom tours. Options range for a few hours to more adventurous overnight packages.

Seasonality

While the Park does not “close”, access is significantly limited for the casual visitor from late September through early May. The road to Exit Glacier is closed by the end of September, which also restricts vehicle access to the Park’s public-use cabins. Scheduled boat tours generally cease at the end of September, and while Whale-Watching tours begin as early as late March, the Park tours generally do not begin until May.
