Another believer in CGear mats. Rather than rug that “blots” up moisture, sand, debris, this LIGHT matting allows air as well as all sand and most other debris to fall thru due to the weave structure. You can clean it by just picking it up and/or a light shaking, hosing it off (doesn’t absorb water) if necessary w/ food/mud etc stains. Folds/rolls up compactly and is super light for its coverage. VERY duarable.

Are any of the rugs reviewed able to be folded up and kept clean as you sweep them. The one we have folds up accordion style and is almost impossible to sweep and fold with laying the swept side back on the ground.

So how do you choose the best RV outdoor rug for YOUR RV? That’s precisely the question we’re going to answer by detailing the most important features and specifications you need to know to compare and contrast these rv camping mats. 

The easiest first choice you can make to narrow down your selection is deciding on how large you want your rug to be.

Some folks might opt for a camping mat that simply covers the immediate area on the ground underneath their RV steps. 

Others might want the flexibility to step further out of their rig in bare feet without worrying about stepping into dirt or onto grass.

In terms of comfort, a rug that covers a larger area will allow you to have a larger indoor-outdoor living space that stays cleaner for the duration of your campground stays.

Liking how clean it looked, and the solid color design, she had to get one after finding out that it allowed sand to fall right through it.

Though Kelly doesn't use it at every boondocking spot, she finds it very useful for those sandier locations where her dogs' feet, as well as her own feet, pick up a ton of mess.

The CGearMultimat is made of two different layers of a weaved material.

This material allows for sand and dirt to fall through (in one direction) but not come back up.

If you’ve ever stepped out of your RV in the morning only to feel dirt and rocks… well, it’s time you invest in an RV patio mat! It’s nice to not have to wear shoes every time you want to go enjoy the shade of your RV awning. And it’s also nice if you have kids to prevent trips and scrapes!

When deciding on which RV mat to buy, you’re probably wondering about how easy they are to clean, their effect on the grass, as well as how durable they are – I’ll include a bit of everything so you can find exactly what you need!

Things to Consider When Choosing Your RV Patio Mat

I think the five RV patio mats I featured are some of the best. But there are TONS of different options out there. So whether you’re gonna choose one from my list or another, what should you keep in mind before choosing an RV mat for your next camping trip?

The RV outdoor rugs on my list only weigh about 10-15 pounds and that seems to be the case with most outdoor rugs. Heavier ones will usually be a bit more durable. Lighter rugs will be easier to handle and will pack up smaller which is nice if you’re short on space.

Another thing you should remember is that lighter outdoor mats will get blown around easier by the wind so it’s best to have a way to stake them down.

How Easy Is It To Clean?

Patio mats have to put up with a lot of dirt and grime – mud, sand, and the occasional spilled bowel of pancake batter. Some of the dry stuff is easy to sweep off with a broom, but it’s also important to be able to hose it off and hang it to dry. Fortunately all the RV outdoor rugs on my list can be hosed down with water to clean.

Ease of Transportation

Trying to handle a rolled up patio mat can seriously feel like wrestling a limp anaconda. Four of the options on my list come with convenient carrying bags with handles which make it super easy to fold up and store.

If you want a patio mat that’ll last several seasons, buy one that can stand up to the elements. Look for a mat that has some UV protection so it won’t start fading after camping a few trips on sunny campsites. It should also shed water easily and be mold and mildew resistant to stay nice even after a few rainy camping trips.

How Do I Keep the Wind From Blowing It?

Even if you have a picnic table or some chairs sitting on top of your awning mat, it’s still worth it to have the corners staked down. Just imagine… you sit down to an awesome camp dinner. Along comes a gust of wind and flips up a corner of your mat along with a bunch of dirt and pine needles that are now all over the table. Yuck!

Look for an RV patio mat with little loops on the corners where you can put some stakes to hold it down (so you can enjoy your camp meal in peace!)

Don’t Kill Your Grass

If you’ll be laying out your rug on a dirt campsite you don’t have to worry about this. But if you’ll be using your RV mat on grass, you should look for a mat that’s breathable . This will help protect the grass beneath the RV mat so you don’t end up with a mat-sized patch of dead grass.

Did you find the perfect RV Mat?

When it came to choosing our RV mat, weight wasn’t as important as durability. We have 3 kids, a ton of camp gear (mainly kitchen stuff) and tend to camp out of campgrounds – that means sand, rocks, and just overall rougher terrain campsites.

I didn’t include the fake grass mats here as I honestly don’t think they would count as camping or awning mats (we have camped A LOT, and the only people I see using those types of RV mats are permanent people).

If you’re someone who needs to see and feel the mat in real life before buying, I do see them often at Costco during summertime. And of course, you can always find RV mats at camping dealerships as well!

Some people may think that having the best RV patio mat is a somewhat trivial idea, but seasoned RV owners know that it is not the case. And It is especially important if you have young kids in the family. I also chose to give my family a rug that is Ming’s Mark GC1 Graphic Mat. This rug, which is one of the best Ming’s mark products, is also porous, so it just lets any liquid spilled on top of it seep through and into the ground. Also, because the rug can breathe, it will not harm the grass underneath it. Is that right?

I’ve been using REVERSIBLE MATS for around a year & a half now and it is a great camping mat! I wasn’t sure when I first got it. It’s fairly thick, but had a somewhat “cheap” feel to it and I was thinking I’d get one or two camping trips out of it. Well, I’ve got WAY more than that and it still looks brand new!

Before deciding the type, size, or design of the outdoor rug you want, you first must decide where to put it. The surface under your rug often determines the other factors. There’s nothing worse than finding the perfect patio mat only to discover it won’t work in your intended space.

Here are the three most popular surfaces that outdoor rugs are placed on, along with a few things to keep in mind when choosing your rug.

• Grass. While super convenient, placing a rug on a grass surface can trap moisture, leading to mold and mildew over time. Opt for a breathable rug and consider using a temporary flooring of plastic or wood composite between the grass and the rug to serve as a barrier between the two. Also, make a point to hang the rug and allow it to dry completely — especially after a rain shower.
• Concrete. Similar to grass, concrete is often porous (unless sealed) and can trap moisture underneath an RV outdoor rug, leading to mildew. Choose a breathable material that allows moisture to evaporate and hang your rug periodically to thoroughly dry it out.
• Wood-stained deck . While wood-stained decks dry fairly quickly after rain, the section underneath an outdoor rug will remain wet longer than the rest of the deck. This leads to uneven fading of the deck stain, as well as mildew growth. Aim for a natural fiber rug that absorbs water and hang your rug to dry often.

What Should Your Outdoor Rug Material Be?

The best RV patio mats and outdoor rugs are made of long-lasting materials that resist stains, delay fading, and hold up to various weather conditions. Here are a few of the best options:

• Polypropylene. One of the most durable and popular options, polypropylene rugs are UV resistant and come in many different patterns and color combinations. This material can handle high moisture and heavy foot traffic, plus it’s super easy to clean and maintain.
• Polyester. If you’re looking for a long-lasting, durable material that can stand up to most stains, polyester is a good choice. This material is fade-resistant, affordable, and available in many colors.
• Jute/Sisal. The natural material of jute or sisal results in a firm, eco-friendly outdoor rug. They’re comfortable underfoot and are biodegradable, but they are prone to fading in direct sunlight and can lead to mold and mildew growth.

What Size Patio Mat or Outdoor Rug is Best?

Depending upon the space you have available, the size of your outdoor rug should suit your RV furniture selections and the intended purpose of your patio area.

For example, if you have a large patio and use it primarily as a dining area, your rug should be larger than your table and chairs but not necessarily as large as the patio itself. Consider how you’re using the space and how you want it to feel.

Buying an RV patio mat, also commonly referred to as an awning mat, is simple when you know what to look for.

RV Patio Mat Material

All patio mats are made from some type of plastic.

Why plastic? Plastic is a lightweight, yet durable material that will dry quickly and can be woven into many different designs and sizes. Mats made of plastic can fold up and store compactly inside your camper without adding excessive weight.

So are all plastic RV mats the same?

No. Some brands use any type of plastic made into thin tubing then weave it into a rug that may only last one camping season. Some brands use thick polypropylene plastic that has UV protection and creates a more impenetrable barrier between you and the ground.

Even better, some brands use only 100-percent recycled plastic in their RV patio mats, which is excellent for the environment.

Many companies use a weave that is known as a “breathable” or “grass-friendly” mat which is perfect for keeping your rug from ruining the grass if you are staying for several days at the same campground because it allows rain and sunlight to penetrate to the ground below.

The type, thickness, and environmental benefits of the plastic material in an RV patio mat will help you decide which outdoor patio mat brand is best for you.

RV Patio Mat Size and Design

Most people buy an RV patio mat that corresponds with the color and size of their recreational vehicle.

Is this the smartest way to make a patio mat size decision?

Not really. Having adequate storage space for your patio mat is critical, but all patio mats are relatively lightweight, and you can fold them into quite a small package for storage so even a large mat could fit within a small camper.

Most color schemes for outdoor patio mats are neutral and can match many RV exteriors, so while it is nice to have a perfect match in color, it shouldn’t be a deal breaker if the size and material are right.

Any size recreational vehicle still can benefit from a large, protected, outdoor surface for entertaining and enjoying the great outdoors which camping is all about.

My recommendation is to get a large RV patio mat (9-by-18 foot or 9-by-20 foot) which allows you to fold over the mat for smaller camping spaces or spread it out when space is available.

If your budget doesn’t allow for such a large RV patio mat, buy the largest one you can afford to increase your camping enjoyment.

RV Patio Mat Accessories

Some patio mat kits offer a bag to store and carry the mat as well as ground stakes to hold it in place. A set like this is a convenient way to have everything you need on hand when it is time to use your patio mat while camping.

While these accessories to your mat are a nice touch, see that they are of good quality and add real value to the set.

A good set of ground stakes is affordable if you need to purchase them separately, and a plastic yard waste bag can function for storage.

How to Maintain an RV Patio Mat

The amount you invest in your outdoor RV patio or awning mat is up to you, but protection is a smart move, so you don’t have to purchase a new rug each camping season.

Follow these three tips below to maintain your patio mat.

Cleaning Your RV Patio Mat

To keep your RV patio mat in its best condition, you should never store the rug when it’s wet or dirty.

• Luckily, it’s easy to clean these plastic material outdoor rugs. I use my RV awning cleaner with my extendable RV brush to wash my patio mat at the same time I wash my motorhome. By doing this, I make sure my rug is getting clean on a regular schedule
• The quick-dry, lightweight material of most RV patio mats means you can lay it out over your picnic table or a couple of chairs to keep it off the ground until it dries and you can fold it for storage
• For a daily clean while at your campsite, brushing a broom in the direction of the long weave of the rug (typically the width, not the length) will sweep of any debris like leaves off the surface

Use the Correct Ground Stakes

Many ground stakes that either come with an RV patio rug purchase, or you buy separately do not work well with the looser weave of these types of outdoor rugs. They can slip through the fabric, or slip out of the ground (especially on sandy soil) and soon you find your mat blown about in the wind.

So how do you avoid this issue?

• No matter what comes with your patio mat purchase, I know from experience that it’s wise to keep a stash of extra ground stakes in your RV at all times. These backup stakes should offer a wide grommet that will hold the fabric around your main stake securely and keep it from tearing
• You can get a secure hold in sandy or loose soil by using plastic stakes that have a broader head to make it easy to use a hammer to pound them into the ground. Place the small hook at the top of the stake over the edge of your mat which will pin your mat down
• Another good tip is to place many more stakes along your RV patio mat edges than only at the four corners manufacturers recommend. I use a stake every two feet all around the perimeter of my outdoor awning rug when on grass or other natural surfaces. Doing so has kept my rug in place even during some high-wind thunderstorms
• If you have no choice but to place your RV patio mat on concrete and have no way to secure it down, place chairs, tables, coolers, or other heavy items at each corner to help keep it in place
• Nothing will ruin your rug faster than having it twisting and folding up repeatedly during a windy camping trip, so having a set of good-quality secure ground stakes is a must-have

Reinforce the Edges

The weakest point on an RV patio mat is the point where the plastic woven material attaches to the fabric-sewn edges. This point is where many people find their rug tears after many months of use because this is where the ground stakes usually attach.

So what can you do to prevent this from happening?

• Silicone adhesive caulk!
• Get a tube of clear (or a color that matches your rug) of 100-percent silicone adhesive caulk. Using some rubber gloves, run a bead of caulk in short sections around the patio mat at the line where the fabric edge meets the plastic weave
• Spread the caulk bead with your finger and slightly push the caulk into the mat weave, so you create a seal between these two materials
• Continue along the entire edge of your mat and let dry. Flip the rug over and repeat the steps on the other side if you want a firm hold
• The flexibility of the caulk will allow you to fold the rug like normal as long as you keep the layer of caulk reasonably thin
• This low-cost caulk enhancement will support the rug edges and help secure the ground stakes without tearing the plastic weave away from the fabric trim.
• I put caulk on my outdoor mat and have been using that same rug for four years. While the pattern on my mat is worn down, the edges are still intact

Finding the right patio mat for your campsite space will make it more welcoming and useable.

We have 2 different options to get a mat made for you –

Option 1: You can bring the coach to us, we can template your coach, make and install the mat. This typically take about 2 days to complete. You can either leave the coach with us, or you can take the coach after we do the template and either come back for the install or we can ship it to you when the mat is ready.

Once we receive the template back from you, we’ll make and ship the mat to you.

We offer the mats in a brown or charcoal (black) color. They are made from a durable indoor/outdoor carpet. They are rubber backed to prevent sliding on tile and laminate floors. Our most popular package includes the main mat as well as the inside steps. Vacuuming is the best way to maintain them. In the event that something gets spilled on them, they can be hosed off and laid out to dry.

Custom Measurements

Even two coaches with the same model, year, and floor plan could still have different measurements. Since every coach is unique, we measure each unit individually to build a custom set.

Our Process

We recommend visiting our location so we can take the measurements. However, if you are unable to do so, we can send a pre-cut plastic template you can use to check your coach. Just indicate any changes that we need to make, and send it back to us.
