Scenic Kayaking Adventures That Splash Through Gorgeous Landscapes

The view from the water provides exciting encounters with wildlife.

women kayaking on sydney harbour in summer

Dana Rebmann,

Kayaking zen. Being on the water is always better than just looking at it. With nothing but the power of your own arms, kayak tours naturally allow you to see the world in a slower, more scenic way. Beginner paddling options abound and often offer unparalleled opportunities to spot wildlife. From outside Scottsdale, Arizona (yes, you can kayak in the desert!), to Sydney, Australia, here are a handful of knockout spots around the world where you can make a memorable splash.

Lower Salt River, Tonto National Forest, Arizona

kayakers can travel along lower salt river in tonto national forest

While a saguaro cactus-flanked river running through the Sonoran Desert outside Scottsdale is enough to turn heads on its own, it’s the locals, so to speak, that truly inspire awe in these parts. Wild horses , with origins reportedly dating back to the late 1600s, live along the Salt River. Bald eagles and river otters are also frequently spotted along the riverbanks and towering red cliffs. Riverbound Sports Paddle Company runs beginner-friendly kayaking tours April to September for $120.  REI Co-op offers tours year-round starting from $136.

For more experienced kayakers comfortable with floating solo, Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch offers self-guided kayak trips with directions and transportation back to vehicles left at the put-in area. All of the equipment you’ll need is included, starting at $51.

Sydney Harbour

friends enjoying a day of kayaking on sydney harbour.

Imagine enjoying your morning dose of caffeine while watching the sun rise over Sydney Harbour Bridge. Now, imagine doing it while floating in a kayak. Sydney by Kayak has thought of seemingly everything to jump-start your morning, including a splash-proof insulated cup filled with your favorite hot, barista-made beverage and kayaks with cupholders. Getting up before the sun can be challenging, but early risers are rewarded with photo-worthy skies and calmer sea conditions fit for novice paddlers. Rates from about $102 based on current exchange rates.

During tours with OzPaddle, you kayak up to and around the Sydney Opera House. Participants get to see all its striking angles from a new perspective, and possibly catch a sighting of the wildly popular long-nosed fur seal named Benny (after Bennelong Point, the opera house’s location), often seen sunbathing on the icon’s waterfront northern steps. There are also opportunities to see a variety of birds including cockatoos when gliding alongside the Botanic Gardens. Tours are weather dependent, but typically launch in the morning to take advantage of less boat traffic and quieter conditions. Rates from about $99 based on current exchange rates.

The Islands of Fiji

kayakers in fiji in the turquoise waters

Fiji boasts 333 tropical islands stretched over an area slightly larger than Washington state. Nicknamed the soft coral capital of the world, the Fijian Islands are blissfully sunny and warm year-round, and home to abundant marine life, making them an ideal destination for kayaking.

Holland America Line

Up to $200 onboard credit on select cruises

At Wakaya Private Island Resort & Spa, guests can hop into clear-bottom kayaks and explore the surrounding marine reserve, home to a plethora of colorful fish, turtles, manta rays and even endangered giant clams. From atop a kayak, paddlers can get a clear view of the resort’s coral restoration underwater nursery, where collected Acropora coral fragments are tended to for up to three years before being transplanted back to damaged reefs. Rates at the all-inclusive property set in the Lomaiviti archipelago begin at $2,500.

The turquoise waters surrounding VOMO Island Fiji, between the Mamanuca and Yasawa island groups, house an equally stunning variety of sea life including parrotfish, turtles and small whitetip reef sharks. Water enthusiasts are encouraged to explore on their own; staff can recommend routes depending on skill level and desired intensity. Rates at the all-inclusive property start at $1,130, with a two-night minimum.

At the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort, you can paddle out on the peaceful waters of Savusavu Bay to the private island of Naviavia, or kayak alongside the resort’s mangrove restoration program, to see how essential the tropical plants are to preventing erosion on the island of Vanua Levu. Rates at the all-inclusive property start at $1,123 based on current exchange rates.

Sunshine Coast, British Columbia, Canada

kayakers at klahoose wilderness resort

Not only is the former fishing village of Lund (Indigenous name Klah ah men), 122 miles north of Vancouver, located at Mile 0 of Highway 101, it’s the gateway to Desolation Sound. Perfect for first-time paddlers, half-day outings with Terracentric Coastal Adventures tend to follow the periwinkle- and sea star-studded shoreline. Harbor seals, bald eagles and humpback whales make the occasional appearance. Terracentric also runs an end-of-the-day paddle that offers a front-row view of sunset. Tours operate May through September and start at $66 depending on exchange rates.

Approximately a 45-minute boat ride from Lund, Klahoose Wilderness Resort’s remote location offers serenity, but solo kayaking in the surrounding waters rewards paddlers with a peace and solitude hard to experience any other way. Curious harbor seals love to pop up behind kayaks, and along with catching sight of intertidal life, opportunities to glimpse Pacific white-sided dolphins, Dall’s and harbor porpoise, and humpback whales abound. About a 15-minute paddle from the resort dock, among towering trees and rocky shores, kayakers can view pictographs that may date back a thousand years. Indigenous owned and operated, Klahoose is open May to October. Visit in the fall and along with kayaking you can make the hour-long boat ride to nearby Toba Inlet, where grizzly bears are often spotted feasting on spawning salmon. A three-night stay at the all-inclusive resort starts at $2,097, depending on current exchange rates.

Channel Islands National Park, California

kayakers travel along cliffs and sea caves

Touted as the Galapagos of North America, this under-the-radar U.S. national park includes five of the eight California Channel Islands (Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel and Santa Barbara). The national park can be reached via ferries operated by park concessionaire Island Packers or by private boat.

On Santa Cruz Island, where towering cliffs plummet into crystal-clear water teeming with wildlife, Channel Islands Adventure Company leads paddlers of all levels along the coast and into sea caves. (All caves are optional.) Most of the year there are two tour options available: one with 2.5 to 3 hours of paddling, and another with an hour to 90 minutes of paddling. Cost starts at $145, plus $66 ferry transportation.

Channel Islands Expeditions leads guided tours along the shoreline of Anacapa Island — home to the largest breeding colony of endangered California brown pelicans — from May to November. Along with options to explore sea caves and spot wildlife, including harbor seals and sea lions, there’s time allotted at the end of each paddle to snorkel in the island’s expansive kelp forest. All snorkeling gear and wetsuits are included for $265.

If one day exploring Channel Islands National Park doesn’t sound like enough, Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic cruise line offers a five-day sailing to the Channel Islands including kayaking, hiking and exploring by zodiac. Rates from $3,310.

  • Chevron down What to expect in Spring

Spring in Louisiana gives birth to variety.  As the weather starts to get warmer, alligators and other reptiles begin to emerge from their slumber, leaves come back to the trees, and a variety of regional wildflowers bring color to the swampy landscape.

The temperatures generally hover from 70-80 degrees in the middle of the day. This is our busiest season, so be sure to book in advance if you have a specific time of day in mind for your tour.

Springtime in the south is wonderful and the perfect time to check out our extended Extended Manchac Kayak Tour , which includes ~4 hours on the water and a scenic picnic lunch(optional).  Another great way to beat the heat is joining our Honey Island extended tour in which we float 6 miles down the beautiful Pearl River, stopping frequently for sand bar swimming, snacks and rope swings!

What the spring version of the swamp looks like

  • Chevron down What to expect in Summer

If you are looking to see reptiles… Summer is the season.  The warm air and water temperatures lure our scaly friends out of hiding and into the bayous where we can get a good look.  Unless you’re a heat freak or are looking for a heavy tan, we recommend with morning or late afternoon tours during the months of June-August.  9am tours are the crowd favorite through the summer. Another great way to beat the heat is joining our Honey Island extended tour in which we float 6 miles down the beautiful Pearl River, stopping frequently for sand bar swimming, snacks and rope swings!

a kayak touring past some cypress trees in summer

  • Chevron down What to expect in Autumn

Autumn in Louisiana weather wise is the equivalent of a perfect summer day in the Northern US… 75-90 degrees, lowered humidity, and gentle breeze from the Gulf.  We consider late September through November to be optimal conditions for kayaking in the bayou. Water and air temperatures remain warm enough to sustain alligator and turtle activity and the waning daylight hours make for great golden hour and sunset opportunities on our 4:30 tour through the Manchac.  Towards the end of the season, wintering birds such as bald eagles and barred owls begin to nest among the cypress and water tupelos. For the early risers and adventures, Autumn is the perfect setting for our Extended Manchac Swamp Kayak tour as well as the combination kayak and plantation tour .

What autumn looks like in the swamp

  • Chevron down What to expect in Winter

Winter is a very fickle season in Louisiana.  Temperatures range from 40-85 degrees. It can be sunny, windy, rainy and has even produced a light snow a few times over the last 10 years.  During this season, the reptile activity greatly diminishes as cold blooded animals find safety to wait out most of the winter. However, we do see a spike in migratory and larger wintering birds alike such as egrets, woodpeckers, owls, and even white ibis.  On the warmer end of the spectrum (70 degrees and up) there is still always a possibility for gators and turtles to be seen lining logs and banks along the bayous… we actually have seen an alligator on Christmas day 2 years in a row! Another benefit to winter paddling is the decrease in invasive Water Hyacinth cover…a weed that often congests waterways during warmer times, dies off and allows us access to deeper, less travelled bayous and swamps.  If the temperature sits above 60 degrees, the conditions become perfect for our extended Extended Manchac Swamp Kayak Tour .

What it looks like to kayak in winter, the cypress trees are barren, but beautiful

  • Chevron down What should I bring/wear on tour?

So, now that you are ready for your New Orleans swamp tour, you need to know what essentials to bring! We recommend that to feel prepared, you bring:

  • Sunscreen – kayaks do not offer any protection from the sun, so it is important that you wear sunscreen. We will be out on the water for at least an hour and a half. Don’t forget to apply to the tops of your legs, as we use sit-on-top kayaks.
  • Bug Repellent – while the mosquitoes are not typically a problem on our swamp tours, they can appear during dusk for 1/2 hour, but otherwise, our other tour times they don’t bug us.
  • Cash – cash is most definitely an essential for your swamp tour. It allows you to tip your tour guides.
  • Camera – bring your camera or phone camera so that you can capture the beauty of the swamp and its creatures. We sell waterproof cases for your photo if you need or want them.
  • Comfortable Clothing – Dress for the weather and wear light layered breathable, synthetic clothing/swimsuits during the warm months and a warm thermal cover in the winter for your swamp tour. Sandals or athletic shoes you don’t mind getting wet or dirty.
  • Questions – Our tour guides love answering questions from guests. If you have a question, they will have an answer.
  • Chevron down What is the best time of day for a swamp tour?

It all depends on what your desire is. .  If you want to see the swamp at the prettiest time of day, we recommend the 9:45 AM tour or the early evening tour. The early morning and evening light has warmer tones than midday. Also, these times don’t have the full sun or full shade contrast of midday, so it’s much better for photography.

Wintertime and early spring can bring temps from 30 degrees (rare) to 75 degrees, with an average high temp of about 64 degrees, so our winter and spring kayak tours can be quite pleasant indeed. We recommend booking during the middle of the day.  We usually adjust times for these seasonal changes and offer more mid day tours.  If it’s sunny and the temperatures reach into the high 60’s, alligators will come out on logs to sun.

Loxahatchee River: Kayak a wild, scenic river in South Florida

By: Author Bonnie Gross

Posted on Last updated: November 1, 2022

It’s federally protected with a “wild and scenic river” designation, and, wow, does the Loxahatchee River ever earn those adjectives.

The scenery is spectacular. The alligators, turtles and birds that thrive here are as wild as they come.

Located in Jupiter, the northern-most city of populous Palm Beach County, the Loxahatchee River is located within an hour’s drive of much of the urban tangle of South Florida. It may be South Florida’s best kayaking river and makes a great place for a variety of canoe and paddling outings.

Loxahatchee River kayaking and turtle: Its name means

There are only two nationally designated Wild and Scenic Rivers in Florida – the Loxahatchee and the Wekiva near Orlando.

The “wild and scenic” part is the 7.6 mile stretch from the river’s headwaters at Riverbend Park, 9060 W. Indiantown Road in Jupiter, downstream to Jonathan Dickinson State Park in Hobe Sound.

The Loxahatchee River offers several alternative kayaking trips, ranging from one- or two-hour trips to an all-day adventure. You can bring or rent canoes or kayaks from the Riverbend concession, Jupiter Outdoor Center.

At the other end, at Jonathan Dickinson State Park, you can also rent kayaks, SUPs and canoes and we recommend a trip from there lower in this article.

loxahatchee river Loxahatchee sign small Loxahatchee River: Kayak a wild, scenic river in South Florida

Here’s a rundown of the Loxahatchee River kayaking options:

A two-hour kayak trip through the cypress forest

This is the most common and popular kayak trip on the Loxahatchee River.

This trip takes in the best scenery on the Loxahatchee River, from Riverbend Park to Masten Dam in about two to three hours roundtrip.

Kayaking the Loxahatchee River: Wild and scenic yet close to population centers in South Florida. (Photo: Bonnie Gross)

In this section, the water is clear and tannic orange color. The river bottom is mostly white sand and so visibility is good. You see many fish and turtles, with an occasional alligator.

There is one gorgeous cypress tree after another, with knobby knees poking up, airplants covering the branches, strangler figs wrapping around trees and ferns filling the banks.  The river is narrow enough here that you are in shade under a canopy of green.

It is paradise.

This section has two dams. It’s good to discuss with the kayak outfitters the wisdom of paddling over the first dam, Lainhart, which you reach in about 20 minutes. Many people paddle over this dam for a little thrill. Both dams have extensive wooden ramps that allow you to portage around them easily.

For the short trip, you turn around before reaching the second dam, 1.8 miles downstream.

For this outing, you begin at Riverbend Park, kayak as far as you want, and then paddle back, upstream, to where you started. Although the Loxahatchee River has a bit of a current, it is not that difficult to kayak back. The outfitters recommend that for each hour downstream, you allow one hour and 15 minutes upstream.

The eggs of the apple snail looked like bubblegum stuck to the cypress knees along the Loxahatchee River kayak trip in March

When we paddled this section a few years ago, we found the scenery so stunning, we were happy to see it again more slowly on the upstream leg.

Riverbend Park, which charges no admission fee, has a separate launch area for people who bring their own canoes and kayaks.

Note: If you’d be more comfortable with a guide, Jupiter Outdoors Center also offers guided kayak trips on this section of the Loxahatchee.

For the adventurous: The all-day one-way Loxahatchee River kayak trip

When I first started paddling the Loxahatchee (I think my first trip was in 1979!) the most popular outing was the eight-mile route from Riverbend Park to Jonathan Dickinson State Park, with livery service back to Riverbend. In recent years, the shuttle service was not available, but now it’s an option regularly offered through Jupiter Outdoor Center. (At this writing, it is not on the website, but can be arranged with a phone call.)

Loxahatchee River kayak trip: This gator seemed to be guarding this log. To proceed, you had to paddle right next to

The longer trip all the way down the river is best for moderately experienced kayakers who are agile enough to scramble over logs to portage their kayaks. In April 2022, we had to make three portages. In each case, we could push our canoe under a log while we clambered over it. Varying water levels will make for easier or harder portages.

The twistiness, the obstacle course of logs and the length of this paddle can make it a challenge. It took us five and a half hours to do the 8.3 mile trip. And the last hour and a half was tough — we were exhausted and paddling against a stiff breeze.

Two weeks after a heavy rain storm, the current was swift kayaking the Loxahatchee River.

The short out-and-back trip ends at Masten Dam, but through-paddlers will continue. This dam had about a 2 1/2 to 3 foot drop when we visited. I’m sure some very experienced paddlers and daredevils paddle  over it. But I wouldn’t, and we didn’t.

The next two or three hours of paddling are just as beautiful as the first section.  The river is sometimes narrow and twisty. It continues through a shady cypress forest and this is where we spotted the three alligators on this trip.

One gator had installed himself comfortably on a sunny log and was reluctant to budge. The only way over an underwater obstacle was to paddle as close to that gator’s log as possible, so we slowly edged closer and closer until the gator finally slipped into the water. Folks who were 15 minutes behind us later told us he was back by the time they got there, and again left his post grudgingly.

After two or three hours of Loxahatchee Rivre kayaking, you reach Trapper Nelsons, home of the legendary

One pleasure of the full river trip is the opportunity to stop at Trapper Nelson‘s. This historic site in Jonathan Dickinson State Park was the home of an eccentric backwoodsman who caught and displayed wild animals in a makeshift private zoo in the 1930s and ‘40s.

His hand built rustic buildings and animal cages are all preserved and it’s an interesting, atmospheric spot. There are shaded tables for a relaxing picnic. We spent 45 minutes here and joined a volunteer docent’s tour of the place, which we have visited in the past. We recommend Trapper Nelson’s as a good place to take a break.

Loxahatchee River kayaking: An alligator skull at Trapper Nelson's. (Photo: David Blasco)

Right up to Trapper Nelson‘s, the Loxahatchee River is a pristine, shady cypress swamp.  As soon as you leave Trapper Nelson‘s, however, you see your first mangrove tree and soon the river has changed character and is fully lined with mangroves. Soon the only cypresses you see are the bleached white snags of ones that have succumbed to salt water.

The river you see in the last 3.5 miles is completely different – wide, sunny, saltier, windier and lined with mangroves.

If you plan to paddle the longer trip, be sure to bring a picnic, sunscreen, hats, lots of water and possibly rain ponchos. (We once paddled the last two hours in the rain and wish we’d been prepared.)

The trip ends at the boat ramp in Jonathan Dickinson, where Jupiter Outdoor Center staff pick you up.

Note : The shuttle service from Jupiter Outdoor Center is not inexpensive. For my husband and I in April 2022, the all-day canoe rental was $85 and the shuttle service was $50. With our own boat, the shuttle would have been $45 per person. Rates and reservations: Riverbend concession, Jupiter Outdoor Center.

A deer along Kitching Creek, a tributary of the Loxahatchee River with Jonathan Dickinson State Park..

A second easy option: Canoe upstream from Jonathon Dickinson State Park

On this kayak or canoe trip, you experience a broad and tidal section of the Loxahatchee. Paddlers often see wading birds and occasionally manatees, ospreys and bald eagles.

Upstream a short distance there is a tributary of the Loxahatchee River, Kitching Creek, that is winding and narrow with overhanging trees and Spanish moss. Kayakers often see alligators here. We paddled right up to a deer munching on mangrove leaves. (To find Kitching Creek, look for a water-measurement installation at its mouth.)

You can launch your own canoe or kayak at the Jonathan Dickinson State Park boat ramp or rent one at the concession stand.  More information, visit the Jonathan Dickinson concessionaire website or call (561) 746-1466 or here.

Kayak outings beginning near Jupiter Inlet

The Jupiter Outdoor Center,1000 A1A, Jupiter, rents kayaks and standup paddleboards from their dock as well as operating various area tours. From the outdoor center, you can paddle around mangrove islands and explore Jupiter Inlet. More information: Jupiter Outdoor Center, 561-747-0063.

Note : It is easy to be confused by the various places called Loxahatchee. About 45 minutes south, you will find the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge in Boynton Beach, an Everglades experience with a nice kayaking trail through a sawgrass marsh. It has no connection to the Loxahatchee River, however .

FAQs Wildlife Kayaking Eco Tour

I have never kayaked before; can i still join this tour.

You do not need any prior kayaking experience to join this trip! Our marine biologist guide will provide a short tutorial before the tour starts to ensure all participants are comfortable with maneuvering the kayaks. We use sturdy ocean kayaks that are inspected regularly, and everyone is provided with a life vest for safety. Our guide is also trained in Wilderness First Aid and Water Rescue. Wildlife Kayaking Eco Tours always depart in the morning, when the bay is at its calmest ensuring perfect kayaking conditions even for first-timers!

Are we guaranteed to see sea turtles?

Wildlife is unpredictable and sightings are never guaranteed. The Eastern Pacific green sea turtle population in San Diego is relatively small and our bay is large, so sightings are never certain. However, you won’t be disappointed as there is plenty of other wildlife to observe. The birdlife in the Chula Vista Wildlife Reserve is prolific and we often spot juvenile round stingrays and bat rays that are using the wetlands as nursing grounds.

Can I bring my own kayak?

Due to our insurance policy, you are not able to bring your own kayak. However, we offer both double and single kayaks that are in excellent condition. All of the equipment we provide has been sanitized right before your trip for hygiene and safety.

What fitness level is required?

Since this is a wildlife viewing tour we will paddle slowly to be able to enjoy nature and wildlife. There is no minimum required fitness level to participate in this tour. Should you for some reason lose steam halfway through our guide always carries a towline! If you have any physical limitations, please let us know in advance.

What makes this an “eco” tour?

Ocean Connectors is a nonprofit program with a mission to educate, inspire, and connect youth in underserved Pacific coastal communities through the study of migratory marine life. When you purchase your Eco Tour ticket proceeds go directly back to our youth education programs. All of our tours also focus on environmental education and conservation and align with our mission to educate, inspire, and connect. We hope to inspire guests to get involved in protecting our oceans!

How does my ticket purchase support youth education?

Ocean Connectors provides presentations and field trips for all public elementary and middle schools in National City, as well as 27 schools in Nayarit, Mexico. Our vison is to cultivate a future generation of passionate, globally-aware, and empowered coastal residents who take active steps to enjoy and protect ocean health. All proceeds of your ticket price goes directly toward these free youth education programs. All our 4th-grade students use sea turtles as a case study and attend a field trip to Living Coast Discovery Center where they have a chance to observe these beautiful animals!

Exploring the Magnificent Bioluminescence in Nature Reserves

One of the most magical experiences you can have during a nature reserve kayak trip is witnessing bioluminescence. Bioluminescent organisms create an awe-inspiring natural phenomenon where the water glows at night. Tours specifically designed for bioluminescence kayak adventures, such as the Fajardo Bio Bay tour, allow you to paddle through the glowing waters and witness the ethereal beauty firsthand. These tours often take place in protected nature reserves that are renowned for their vibrant bioluminescent displays.

Experiencing bioluminescence in nature reserves is truly an otherworldly experience. As you glide through the water, every stroke of your paddle creates a mesmerizing trail of light. The bioluminescent organisms, such as dinoflagellates or fireflies, emit light through a chemical reaction, transforming the water into a stunning neon spectacle. It’s a unique opportunity to connect with nature in a way that few people have the chance to.

The Fajardo Bio Bay tour, for example, takes you to a bioluminescent lagoon in Puerto Rico. As the sun sets and darkness falls, the water comes alive with a glowing blue and green hue. Safety and Responsible Kayaking in Nature Reserves

When embarking on a kayak adventure in nature reserves, it is crucial to prioritize safety and responsible practices. Respecting the wildlife and their habitats not only ensures their protection but also enhances the overall experience for everyone involved. Here are some key guidelines to keep in mind during your nature reserve kayak tour:

1. Keep a Safe Distance

While encountering wildlife is one of the highlights of nature reserve kayaking, it’s important to maintain a safe distance to avoid disturbing the animals and their natural behaviors. Admire them from afar and use binoculars or a zoom lens to get a closer look without causing any harm.

2. Avoid Excessive Noise

Avoid making loud noises or sudden movements during your kayak tour, as this can startle wildlife and disrupt their peace. Keep conversations and any other noises to a minimum so that you can fully immerse yourself in the tranquility of the natural surroundings.

3. Practice Leave No Trace Principles

Leave No Trace is a set of outdoor ethics that promotes responsible behavior in natural areas. It includes principles such as properly disposing of waste, not feeding wildlife, and leaving natural objects undisturbed. By following these principles, you can help preserve the pristine beauty of nature reserves for future generations.

Remember, the goal of kayak tours in nature reserves is to appreciate and connect with the natural environment while minimizing our impact. By adhering to these safety and responsible practices, you can have a truly enjoyable and eco-friendly kayaking experience.

Take into account your own skill level and physical fitness when choosing the duration of your tour. It’s also important to consider any specific requirements or restrictions set by the tour operators, such as minimum age limits or equipment recommendations.

When packing for your nature reserve kayak adventure, be sure to bring appropriate gear. A life jacket is a must to ensure safety on the water. Sunscreen, water, and snacks are also essentials to keep you hydrated and energized during your trip. Kayak Routes

Odiorne point state park routes.

We offer two kayaking routes launching from the Odiorne Point State Park boat ramp: Berrys’ Brook and Frost Point (orange line on map below) is best for beginner-intermediate paddlers. The Little Harbor to Leachs Island route (green line) is for intermediate paddlers, and is for adults only .

New for 2024: Hampton Falls Estuary Route

We’ve partnered with the Seabrook-Hamptons Estuary Alliance (SHEA) to offer a new kayaking route, launching from Hampton Falls, NH! This new route begins at the Depot Road boat launch in Hampton Falls, NH, and explores the vast intertidal salt marshes of the Seabrook-Hamptons estuary. We’ll look for wildlife both above and below the surface, including ospreys and more, while learning about local ecology, natural history, and conservation from the experts at SHEA.

SHEA is funded, in part, by NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management under the Coastal Zone Management Act in conjunction with the NH Department of Environmental Services Coastal Program.

Thanks to generous support SHEA received from Kennebunk Savings Bank, we are able to offer the Hampton Falls Estuary paddles at the reduced member rate of $42 to all.

Gulf Shores Kayak Tour

We had a wonderful time and learned a lot about some local wildlife. We shared much of the knowledge gained with our family on other outings later in the week! We were lucky enough to see a lot of dolphin at the end of our tour that came within 5 feet of our kayaks. There were people young to old and everyone seemed to have a great time! We plan on doing it again when our children get older.

Great fun and educational too!

Such a great time my only complaint is the three hours went by so fast. We had an expert guide and felt like Chris was a kayaking encyclopedia with all his knowledge of the area, geography and wildlife. Even his recommendations for restaurants were spot on. Highly recommend and will be back for more next time in Orange Beach!

We enjoyed our tour very much. We asked for Chris as we have two kids, 7 and 11 and he got great reviews with kids. He didn’t disappoint. He is knowledgable and witty and very experienced. I’d recommend him in a heartbeat. Loved the scenery and history lesson and info on the area. And we saw a lot of dolphins which everyone loved.

Fabulous Tour

I signed my family up for the tour hoping they would enjoy it. They did!!! Chris and Cassie were fabulous guides. We had fun and learned a lot about the animals that share the land and water ways. Even though we did not see dolphins, it was still a great time and will do this again next time we are down!!!! Even if your not an experienced kayaker (1st time my fiance had been in a kayak)…you need to do this!!

Honeymooners looking for adventure

We had an AMAZING time with Chris as our tour guide. He was very informative about the wildlife and area around us! I had never kayaked before but my husband had a bit but we both had a great time and no problems keeping up! We also saw some dolphins, which was really neat. Overall we had a fantastic experience and will definitely do again

Bottle Creek Indian Mound

Chris took us to the Bottle Creek Indian Mound on 1/13, by kayak from Rice Creek landing, in an all-day trip, through a string of bayou and rivers, in what really did look like America’s Amazon. The mounds themselves are fabulous, built by native Americans almost 800 years ago, and still standing. Chris was a superb guide to the history and culture of these native Americans, and is a great naturalist as well. It was super muddy and the flies were in abundance, but it was a great trip. We are going to take another WildNative Tour the next time we are in Mobile.

Glaciers, Wildlife, Wilderness

An intimate way to experience the alaskan wilderness.

A passion for Alaskan glacier and wildlife kayaking tours in the Prince William Sound wilderness defines Anadyr Adventures, the premier sea kayaking company in Valdez, Alaska.

Choose from a variety of world-class day trips or multiday camping, lodge or mothership based tours. We can also work with you to design a trip customized to your interests.

Anadyr Adventures operates under special use permits from the Chugach National Forest and the Alaska Division of Parks. We are proud to work with Valdez City Schools, Valdez Parks and Recreation, and Advocates for Victims of Violence to introduce kids to paddling.

And we are proud to have received the the 2004 Spirit of Alaska award, presented by ATIA to the Alaskan business best exemplifying the Alaskan spirit of community and public service.

Anadyr Adventures offers four types of trips: day trips for those with limited time in Valdez, multi-day camping trips, Mothership trips for those desiring the amenities of a support vessel, and lodge based trips offering Prince William Sound day excursions from the comfort of a remote Alaskan wilderness lodge.

Kayaks at Columbia Glacier

  • Trip Choice
  • Associations

Established in 1989, Anadyr Adventures offers naturalist guided sea-kayaking, sailing and hiking trips to novice and experienced kayakers, families, kids and the physically challenged. We are a company dedicated to sharing with you the beauty of Prince William Sound wilderness. Our groups are small, our impact is low and sustainable tourism is in the forefront of our agenda.

Valdez has been our home since 1984. Through the years we have kayaked, sailed and hiked Prince William Sound extensively. Consequently, we are uniquely positioned to help you plan your trip.

You may choose from a wide range of trips with varying levels of difficulty and comfort; from easy, suitable for novice paddlers and kids, to strenuous, geared for the more experienced paddlers. Our guided trips throughout Prince William Sound are small and intimate, giving you the perfect opportunity to view your surroundings and the abundant wildlife in a way that most larger tour companies simply cannot offer.

The trips we have listed are not exclusive…. in fact, many great tours have not made it on these pages! If you don’t see anything that immediately excites you, feel free to call for new ideas. You will find our staff knowledgeable, our pricing to be reasonable and affordable. We pride ourselves on providing honest and accurate information so that your expectations are well matched with what we can deliver. Don’t hesitate to call or write with your questions at any time.

Why choose Anadyr Adventures for your Alaska sea kayaking adventure?

Anadyr Adventures has over 30 years of experience leading quality sea-kayaking and hiking trips in Prince William Sound.

We carefully select only the safest, reliable and knowledgeable guides to lead you. Our guides are top professionals, who not only teach their skill, but offer interpretive discussions of the local history, geology, flora, and fauna. Whenever possible we make a point to employ locally in order to benefit the local community and its economy directly, thereby providing further incentive for local support and preservation of natural areas and wildlife habitat.

Because we are locally owned, we have more in-depth knowledge to share with you. The majority of our guides are Alaskans as well. Their knowledge of the Alaska wilderness, not to mention our native fauna & flora, was gained from years of first-hand experience in the backcountry, and not read from a book a few months prior to your tour. Your guide will not simply be another guest on the trip with you, but will have valuable insight to offer and practical knowledge to share on the areas you’ll be paddling through. We strive to make sure our guides are equally well versed in the natural history & geology of the area and often employ university professors and museum curators to assist with our training.

Finally, we pride ourselves on offering personalized service. We maintain small group sizes allowing us to ensure the highest quality of tours. We make every effort to coordinate our groups so the interests of our individual clients and guide complement one another. Please don’t hesitate to use “our client feedback” page to ask questions from our former guests.

Anadyr Adventures is a proud member of the Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau, Valdez Convention and Visitors Bureau, Valdez Chamber of Commerce, Tok Chamber of Commrs, Valdez Trails Associations, Alaska State Parks Advisory Board and Alaska’s Wilderness Recreation & Tourism Association. We support local conservation organizations and encourages our clients to make a $1-A-Day voluntary donation to organizations working to conserve Alaska’s wilderness. We are proud to have received ATIA’s Spirit of Alaska award in 2004.

Valdez is located on the north shore of Port Valdez, a deep water fjord in Prince William Sound. Referred to as “Little Switzerland”, Valdez is surrounded by breathtaking snow capped mountains. Valdez lies 305 road miles east of Anchorage, and 364 road miles south of Fairbanks.

Valdez can be reached by the Alaska Marine Highway. The state ferry provides transport to and from Whittier, Cordova, Kodiak, Seward and Homer. It takes 6 hours from Whittier to reach Valdez via the ferry system.

Alaska Airlines has two, and sometimes three, daily flights from Anchorage. The flight from Anchorage to Valdez takes 40 minutes. Our advice is to make your reservation for an earlier flight or even for the day before to avoid potential flight cancellations.

The Richardson Highway connects Valdez to Anchorage, Fairbanks and Canada. Driving time from Anchorage to Valdez is 6 hours. Allow ample time for driving because the highways are very scenic and you’ll want to stop to admire the view and take pictures. Along the way there are a number of roadside lodges and campgrounds. If you are driving from Anchorage we recommend food and lodging at Sheep Mountain Lodge.

Once you reach Thompson Pass and enter Keystone Canyon, you are getting close to Valdez. Follow the Richardson Highway into town, ( about 10 miles), passing a number of RV Parks. Turn left on Chitna Drive, go to the end ( 2 short blocks) turn right on North Harbor Drive. We are located three buildings down on the right hand side at 225 North Harbor Drive. If you see a place called Fish Central or Mike’s Palace, you have just passed our office. For a complete listing of accommodations, tours, and services in Valdez, please visit our helpful travel links.

Natural History

From the many icefields covering the vallies of the Chugach Mountains flow more than 150 glaciers with 17 reaching sea level. The climate is maritime with moderate temperatures and an average precipitation of 100 inches annually.

Prince William Sound has the greatest diversity of wildlife habitat along the entire northern Pacific Coast. Two hundred forty species of birds have been observed, ranging from the tiny rufus hummingbird to the mighty bald eagle, and during spring and fall migration tens of millions of migratory birds traverse the area. Humpback, killer, and minke whales, seals and Steller sea lions reside in this marine environment. Thirty different land mammals have been recorded in Prince William Sound. Most easily spotted are Sitka deer, black bears and mountain goats. Commercial and sports fishermen harvest five species of Pacific salmon as well as halibut, shrimp, crab, herring and bottom fish in the rich waters of the Sound.

This vast resource of natural beauty and wildlife is easily accessible to you through Anadyr Adventures.

Seeing Southcentral Alaska by river, lake and sea

wildlife kayaking trips

For many people, being near or out on water is at once deeply soothing and thrilling. If that’s true for you, Southcentral Alaska has world-class water adventure opportunities for every ability level.

Up close with the glaciers

Picture an ice slab the size of a house cleaving in slow motion from a massive blue and white glacier, sending up sparkling spray as it slips into the water beneath. You’re witnessing this in real time from a boat, at a safe distance but still close enough to hear.

While seeing a glacial calving event isn’t guaranteed, getting a firsthand look at a glacier is reliably awesome. Bonus: You don’t need a perfect sunny day to get the best views. The beautiful glacial blues are actually more prominent when it’s overcast.

Several outfits offer boat tours less than a day’s drive from Anchorage.

If you’re based in Anchorage and have limited time, check out the Mv Ptarmigan to Portage Glacier. Only an hour’s drive from Anchorage, you’ll spend about an hour on Portage Lake cruising right up to the face of the ice. Tickets run $49 per adult and $29 per child.

For those with more time, the 26 Glacier Tour run by Phillips Cruises & Tours says it all in the name. The nearly six-hour, narrated cruise covers 150 miles of Prince William Sound, and includes breathtaking views across College Fjord and Blackstone Bay. Tickets are $189 per adult, $125 per child, and include a meal.

Wildlife viewing

Alaska isn’t just about pretty, old ice: You’re here to see the incredibly diverse and often charismatic wildlife! Whales, sea otters, puffins and Steller sea lions abound. Many day cruise operators focus on wildlife viewing (and you’ll likely get some glaciers in there too).

Major Marine Tours , based in Seward, cruises to Kenai Fjords National Park, where the whale-watching is world class — but then, like so much in Alaska, so is the rest. Running from $109 for an adult/$54 per child for an early spring tour, to an 8.5-hour cruise at $289 per adult, there’s an array of day tours to choose from, including private charters.

Also based in Seward, Kenai Fjords Tours ventures into Resurrection Bay and beyond, offering options for different interests and food on every tour. Choose between a wildlife vs. glacier emphasis, or calmer water tours for those with concerns. Pricing ranges from $50 per person in the early season to $238 for a full day tour.

Want to get really close to the action? Little compares to paddling at eye-level in calm blue saltwater near a wild and forested shore, watching shorebirds wheel overhead, spotting eagles on their perch, and seeing otters floating on their backs nearby. Homer provides a stunning starting point for outfitters such as True North Kayak Adventures , which runs kayak trips in gorgeous Kachemak Bay in the $150-per-person range.

Finally, while you’re out on the water, why not catch some dinner? There are myriad salmon and halibut fishing charter options in both Seward and Homer, and easy pack/flash freeze/ship outfitters back on land to get your catch conveniently and safely processed. Check out Alaska Northern Outfitters in Seward and Homer Charter Fishing in Homer as starting points. Trips run roughly $400 per person.

River rafting

Your view of Alaska is going to change the closer you are to the water. Guided rafting trips provide a family-friendly experience with more of an adventurous edge than cruises, yet still appropriate for a wide range of mobility levels.

If you choose a guided rafting tour on the fabled Kenai Peninsula, you’ll experience an otherworldly green-blue river moving your raft along surprisingly swiftly as you scan the shoreline for bears feeding on fish. This region is teeming with life. One outfitter is Alaska River Adventures , offering half- and full-day float trips beginning at $64 per adult and $29.50 for kids.

For those looking for adventure, NOVA tours based in the Matanuska Valley offer a glimpse of a more rugged, exposed, grand Alaska that makes you feel like you truly are as far north as you traveled. The light hits differently up there across an expanse of glacially fed river and jagged mountain peaks. Their Matanuska River overnight tour is customizable for different experience levels, and starts at $550 per adult and $350 per child.

Up for a spicier ride? Try a guided trip with Chugach Outdoor Center or NOVA to Sixmile Creek, near Hope. This fabled local whitewater destination is considered intermediate to advanced and not for the faint of heart (or for those who can’t swim). Choose between a Class IV, two-canyon itinerary, or three canyons including IV and V rapids, $139-$215.

Another option for experienced and intrepid explorers is the versatile and increasingly popular packrafting. For the uninitiated, packrafts are highly portable personal inflatables designed to compress into a backpack, enabling you to flex your backpacking skills while accessing more remote, wild water. You get to hike in and paddle out! Alaska Packraft School guides an overnight packraft trip through fabled Crow Pass, which includes 15 miles of hiking and 8 miles of rafting on Eagle River, for $600.

Lakes of the Great Land

Alaska has over 3 million lakes, and some beautiful ones are only a stone’s throw from Anchorage.

Eklutna Lake sits 12 winding road miles away from the Glenn Highway. It’s tucked back into the Chugach Mountains but, at 7 miles long, is the largest lake in the region. On a clear day, it glows an ethereal blue-green. Lifetime Adventures at the lake’s edge provides day-rental kayaks starting at $50 per rental.

Craving even more adventure and an “only in Alaska” experience? Hardy travelers can try paddleboarding on an icy blue glacial lake at Knik Glacier with Alaska Sundog Guiding , for $999 per person.

The options for witnessing Southcentral Alaska from its many waterways are as numerous as there are bodies of water. You could spend a lifetime trying to see every one. Instead, why not pick one or two out of the best the region has to offer, and enjoy yourself fully while you’re there? It’s as sure of a bet you can make on creating an unforgettable life experience.

Mom reunited with kids after husband arrested in Turks and Caicos for ammunition

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Gray News) - An Oklahoma mom had an emotional reunion with her two kids Tuesday, but one family member was missing.

Valerie Watson has spent more than a week out of the country. She and her husband Ryan were held in Turks and Caicos after bullets were inadvertently left in their luggage after a hunting trip.

It’s a serious offense on those islands, with a minimum prison sentence of 12 years. Officials released Valerie Watson on Monday but locked up her husband.

“We know that God’s still working, and he’s working through us,” Valerie Watson said.

“I’ve been thinking about this moment for a while,” she said of being reunited with her kids. “I didn’t know when it was going to happen. I was prepared to also be arrested yesterday.”

The Watsons have some help in their fight. Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt sent a letter to government officials in Turks and Caicos on April 16. He calls Watson “an avid outdoorsman,” arguing the ammunition was “an inadvertent oversight, not an intentional attempt to break the law. "

The office of Sen. Markwayne Mullin said they’ve been in touch with the family and are doing everything they can to help.

Valerie Watson said she’s been anticipating embracing her children.

“I don’t even have words to describe it. Just getting to hold them again, it just filled my momma heart. It made me so happy. It just gives me a lot of comfort to know that I get to be here with them now. But my wife heart is still breaking because Ryan’s not with me,” she said.

Valerie Watson said that there’s still work to be done to get her family back together.

“Routine has never sounded better, but I know our life is different. And our goal is to get Ryan home because we can’t be a family without Dad,” she said.

You can experience long waits at the car rental counter. The airport also gets busy during weekends, special events, holidays, and major conferences in Moscow.
