10 Wheelchair Accessible Cruises to Consider for Your Next Vacation

wheelchair accessible river cruise ship

cruising with kids Taking a cruise is a very popular vacation option for wheelchair accessibility and for those with disabilities because everything is available within the confines of the ship. Wheelchair accessible cruises and disabled cruises are floating vacations with everything from pools and fine dining to relaxation and spacious living quarters. There’s no need to worry about transportation or mobility once you’re on the ship, as it’s all included and ready for you to explore.

The following 10 wheelchair accessible and disabled cruises cover 5 different destinations: Alaska, the Caribbean, Hawaii, the Bahamas, and Scandiavia or Northern Europe, with 5 different cruise lines. This gives you a wide range of destinations and experiences to choose from. For each of the handicap cruises mentioned in this article , there are disabled cabins on cruise ships and they would be perfect for any wheelchair user or senior with disabilities. Almost all cruises are handicap accessible cruises due to the staterooms and accommodations.

When planning a cruise, whether it’s one that’s been recommended below or to any destination you choose, it’s important to remember to contact the cruise line with any questions. Many cruise ships will dock at each destination, but not every port of call is wheelchair accessible. Speaking with the cruise line about excursions and wheelchair accessibility is the best way to ensure your wheelchair cruise suits your needs.

The Best Wheelchair Accessible Cruises and Disabled Cruises to Consider

1: Alaskan Cruise with Holland America

Alaska is a great destination for disabled cruises because you can see so much from the ship itself and enjoy the destination without having to disembark sometimes. Many of the ports are also docked, which makes it easy to go explore each city, see a show, and do some shopping, along with take in the sights and experiences.  Ports of call  on these cruises include Ketchikan, Juneau , Skagway, and Glacier Bay.

One of the best ways to take a cruise to Alaska in terms of wheelchair accessibility is with  Holland America . There are a variety of Alaskan wheelchair accessible cruises available through this cruise line. The best time to see Alaska is from April to September, due to the weather and these cruises can be scheduled quickly if you’re booking in that window.

Half of the Holland America cruise ships travel to and from Alaska, but  one of the most wheelchair and handicap accessible ships is Nieuw Amsterdam . This ship provides 7 day cruises in Alaska, including the Glacier Discovery Northbound, Glacier Discovery Southbound, and Alaskan Inside Passage. Cruises depart from Vancouver, BC, Canada and Whittier, Alaska.

Holland America is excellent in terms of accessibility from check in to check out. There’s a specific wheelchair and special assistance check in, the staterooms are very accessible and spacious, and there are accessible restrooms on the most popular levels so you don’t have to waste vacation time traveling back to your room.

2: Alaskan Cruise with Carnival

Another great Alaska option is taking a cruise with Carnival. There are  three different Carnival cruise ships that offer an Alaska trip : the Carnival Miracle with 10 day or 11 day cruises leaving from San Francisco, California, the Carnival Spirit with a 7 day or 8 day cruise leaving from Seattle, Washington, and the Carnival Legend with a 9 day cruise leaving from Vancouver, BC, Canada. The Alaska cruises typically run from April to September, as this is the best weather window for visiting Alaska.

The ports of call depend on how long your cruise is, but typically most Alaska cruises with Carnival visit several of the same destinations. The most popular destinations with wheelchair accessible excursions include: Skagway, Ketchikan , and Icy Strait Point. There’s also plenty to do in Juneau and Victoria. Most wheelchair and handicap accessible excursions include a tour, from  a train ride at White Pass Summit  to a village tour in Ketchikan and a whale cruise at Icy Strait Point.

A unique feature of the Carnival Alaska cruises is the day of  Cruising the Tracy Arm Fjord . This is an on ship experience because everyone stays aboard the ship and the ship passes through a narrow waterway surrounded by glaciers on both sides.

Carnival offers a variety of accessibility accommodations, including wheelchair accessible staterooms. There are four different types of accessible staterooms available and  Carnival uses a Mobility Questionaire  to help assign the appropriate room to guests requiring accommodations.

3: Caribbean Cruise with Carnival

Carnival is also a great cruise line for traveling to the Caribbean. This cruise line offers trips to the  West, East, and Southern Caribbean  departing from multiple locations along the east coast including Florida, Alabama, Texas, Virginia, New York, South Carolina, and Maryland. Cruises can last anywhere from 4 days to 14 days, which makes it easy to enjoy the trip no matter the length of your vacation. The shorter trips, 4 to 7 days, typically cover the West and East, while the longer trips, 14 days, visit the south.

The 4 to 5 day cruises occur on the Carnival Sensation and the Carnival Fantasy. These trips have  two ports of call ,  Key West  and  Cozumel  where you can take tours to explore the port and maybe even spend some time at the beach. A 6 day cruise typically has 3 stops, but these ports are all different from the shorter cruises, with ports at Nassau, Amber Cove, Grand Turk, and Half Moon Cay, depending on the cruise. Each port has plenty to explore from shopping and dining to beaches, tours, and other excursions. The Carnival Magic, Breeze, and Fascination all run 6 day cruises.

Carnival cruises are great options for anyone looking to take their first cruise. It’s a common cruise line and can be a solid opportunity for a wheelchair cruise, a cruise for seniors with disabilities, or even cruising with kids , as Carnival has a kid’s club and many activities are geared toward children. Carnival offers 4 different accessible staterooms on most of their cruise ships and works with guests to ensure their stateroom suits their needs.

4: Caribbean Cruise with Disney

Disney is a popular cruise line and their cruises to the Caribbean are more popular due to the Disney island stop, Castaway Cay. Disney cruises are great for families and because of this target audience, they’re also great in terms of wheelchair and handicap accessibility. When looking for a cruise for wheelchair users, consider a Disney cruise. While they are typically more expensive, they may also offer more accessible excursions with a family focused atmosphere.

Disney cruises visit Western, Eastern, and Southern Caribbean, depending on which trip you book.  4 night cruises  are aboard the Disney Wonder and depart from Galveston, Texas or New Orleans, Louisiana. These short cruises have one port of call, Cozumel, Mexico , which is great for exploring the beach. There’s also 2 days at sea with plenty to do, as Disney hosts magnificent days at sea parties with unique themes. The ideal time of year to take a Disney cruise to the Caribbean is December to May, outside of hurricane season.

7 night cruises  are aboard the Disney Fantasy and depart from Florida, Texas, or Lousisana. Some of these cruises even stop at Castaway Cay twice, which is perfect for getting in beach time and to explore each destination.  Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island, is very handicap accessible  with wide, paved walking paths, sand wheelchairs, an accessible tram, and accessible bathrooms.

Disney cruises are very accessible , from spacious staterooms to accessible bathrooms. Disney provides a list of amenities in each accessible stateroom, as well as a Special Services department to ensure your cruise fulfills all your accessibility needs. A Disney cruise is a great option for all ages, as each cruise provides plenty of on board entertainment and activity along with beautiful ports of call.

5: Hawaiian Cruise with Disney

Another great destination with  Disney Cruises is Hawaii . You get all the luxury and accessibility of the  staterooms , the wonderful on board entertainment and events, along with a beautiful destination and beachy ports of call. Hawaii cruises with Disney tend to be longer trips, 9 and 10 nights, and have a limited range of ports to depart from.

There is limited availability on these cruises as well, with the  Disney Wonder  leaving from Vancouver, BC, Canada. Each cruise has a port of call at three or four Hawaiian islands, making sure your whole trip is spent in paradise. The best time to take a Hawaii cruise is during good weather, to avoid storms, ideally April to September.

A  10 day cruise to Hawaii with Disney  includes 5 days at sea and 5 destinations, all of which are different Hawaiian islands. A cruise of this length gives you plenty of time onboard to enjoy the shows, dining experiences, character meet and greets, and onboard entertainment, while also getting to visit several Hawaiian destinations to visit the beach, tour the towns, take pictures, and enjoy the atmosphere.

6: Hawaiian Cruise with Norwegian

A unique cruising experience is visiting Hawaii with  Norwegian Cruise Line . This line offers long, 14 day cruises starting or ending in Hawaii, along with 7 day Hawaii round trip cruises. This is a unique cruise experience in that you start your cruise in Hawaii and can end in Tahiti or take the ship all the way to Vancouver, depending on your preference. Many cruises are round trip from one specific port, but Norwegian offers a chance to explore even more on one cruise.

The  7 day round trip cruise  starts and ends on the island of Hawaii with the ship Pride of America. Ports include popular Hawaiian islands such as Kahului, Hilo, and Kona, and is one of the most well-known and popular cruise options to this destination. Norwegian runs this cruse year-round, which makes it easy to book for whenever you’re ready to take a vacation.

The  11 day cruise  starts in Hawaii and ends in Vancouver, which is an amazing way to end a vacation. You can start in Hawaii for a few days, enjoy the island, then island hop your way home to Vancouver and fly from there. Port activities include visiting the beaches, shopping, and spending time at museums, educational centers, and national parks. There’s something for everyone on these trips for all ages and mobility restrictions.

Norwegian Cruise Line believes that cruising should be enjoyed by everyone, which is why they strive to provide the best service for guests with disabilities, handicaps, mobility restrictions, and wheelchair users. Norwegian has  Special Assistance Coordinators  to help ensure your cruise fulfills your needs, from a specific stateroom to any other accommodations.

 wheelchair accessible cruises

7: Bahamas Cruise with Norwegian

Norwegian Cruise Line also offers wonderful cruises for wheelchair users to a variety of destinations, including the Bahamas. Just like with Hawaii,  Norwegian offers  some unique experiences on their cruises to the Bahamas, including one cruise that leaves New York City, stops in Florida for some theme park fun, and then cruises to the Bahamas for fun, sun, and beachy afternoons. They offer 3 day, 4 day, or 5 day cruises from Florida, or a 10 day or 11 day cruise from NYC. The ships that travel this route include the Norweigan Sky, Norweigan Sun, and Norweigan Escape.

Most of these  cruises are round-trip , which makes it easy to arrive at your port, board the ship, and enjoy the trip. Ports of call include Grand Bahama Island, Grand Stirrup Cay, and Nassau on the shorter trips, and additional stops in Orlando and Bermuda for the 11 day cruise. This is a great cruise to visit the beaches, enjoy the warm weather, and to escape daily life for a few days. The best time to travel to the Bahamas is after November and before May, to have the best weather.

Norwegian wants everyone to enjoy their stay and works to provide the best staterooms and service to accommodate the needs of every guest. They have wheelchair accessible staterooms and events for everyone both onboard and at each port as an excursion.  Contact Norwegian Cruise Line  for specifics.

8: Bahamas Cruise with Royal Caribbean

Similar to traveling to the Bahamas with Norwegian, Royal Caribbean cruises leave from Florida, Texas, and other eastern coastal states of the United States to explore Nassau, Key West, and Cozumel. This is the perfect cruise for wheelchair users, people with disabilities, and seniors with disabilities as it gives everyone a chance to enjoy the warm weather and get a chance to enjoy beyond their everyday.

Royal Caribbean offers cruises  in a range of lengths, from 3 nights to 4 and 5 nights, along with a week long 7 day to 14 days and beyond. Ships that travel to the Bahamas include the Mariner of the Seas, Empress of the Seas, and Independence of the Seas. All ships offer accessible staterooms and excursions. Reservations require a  Guest with Special Needs Form  to ensure you are assigned the proper stateroom.

Nassau  is a docked port, which means it will be the most wheelchair accessible and allows everyone a chance to get off the ship and explore. There’s beautiful beaches, boat rides, tours, and plenty of shopping. This is a great place for a short cruise over a weekend or a longer cruise to enjoy more of the Bahamas.

9: Scandinavia with Royal Caribbean

On  Royal Caribbean, their ship Jewel of the Seas  takes guests to Scandinavia and Russia over 7, 8, or 10 days. This ship departs from Copenhagen, Denmark or Stockholm, Sweden depending on the trip. These trips are part of the Baltic Cruises this cruise line offers. The best time to visit Scandinavia and Northern Europe is from April to August for the best weather window.

One of the benefits of traveling with Royal Caribbean is that the itinerary tells you if your port will be docked or tendered. Docked is the best option for those with disabilities, mobility limitations, and wheelchair accessibility. Most of the ports of call on the Baltic Cruises are docked, with the rare exception depending on your cruise.

Popular ports of call include Tallinn, Estonia , St. Petersburg, Russia , and Helsinki, Finland . Longer cruises have a few more ports of call including Visby, Sweden. Each location on any of the  three cruises  include amazing local dining, comprehensive tours and museums to take in the local history, and plenty of shopping for gifts, souvenirs and pictures to document your trip.

Royal Caribbean fully supports that travel should be accessible for all and works to provide accessible staterooms and excursions to all their guests. Their website includes a  request form for accessible excursions and a list of tendered ports , which are not typically wheelchair accessible. Accessible staterooms can be requested with a  Guest Special Needs Form .

10: Scandinavian Cruise with Holland America

A Scandinavian cruise is commonly referred to as a  Northern Europe cruise  and visits locations such as Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. In addition to cruising with Royal Caribbean, you can also cruise with Holland America, which is known as one of the most accessible cruise lines, as we saw with cruising to Alaska. The same standard is upheld with cruising to Scandinavia.  Holland America  offers 7 day, 10 day, 14 day, and 21 day cruises that explore the waterways of Sweden, Norway, and the Baltic sea. Ships available for these trips include Ship Nieuw Statendam and Ship Rotterdam.

Many of these excursions are taking water and motor tours of the surrounding areas, like driving through one of Norway’s longest tunnels, visiting farm villages, sampling local coffee and treats, and exploring the steep roads with hairpin turns. While these are exciting ways to explore the area, it can also make wheelchair accessibility difficult. The best way to approach these excursions is to speak with Holland America directly, as accessible vehicles, ramps, and other accommodations can be made in advance.

Holland America Line strives to provide any accommodations you may need during your stay and uses a  Special Requirements Information Form  to help provide the proper stateroom and any other adjustments a guest with disabilities or mobility limitations may need. It is suggested to plan ahead and to contact the cruise line well before your stay in order to answer questions about cruises for wheelchair users and to confirm your reservation.

As you can see, there are a variety of handicap cruises and disabled cruises available to consider for your next vacation. Most cruise lines are accommodating in terms of disabled cabins on cruise ships and exciting excursions.

Cruises are a great opportunity to travel for wheelchair users, those with mobility restrictions and disabled individuals. The all inclusiveness of a cruise makes it the perfect way to relax and enjoy without all the planning of a traditional vacation.

  • A Guide To Accessible River Cruises: 7 Things To Consider

by Emma Smith - 02/04/2019

Wheelchair - Mobility on a cruise

River cruises are extremely popular with the over 50s. In fact, the average age of a River Voyages customer is 75!

The leisurely pace, relaxing atmosphere and culture-rich itineraries make river cruising very appealing to the senior age group. Given this target audience, you would hope that river cruises would be accessible for passengers with disabilities. Sadly, that is not the case.

For those people who are dependent on a wheelchair all of the time, river cruising is simply not suitable. They should instead look into ocean cruising, where they will be very well catered for. However, for those who have some difficulty walking and may use a wheelchair or other mobility aid for assistance, a river cruise is entirely possible, just be sure to plan your trip carefully and beware of the pitfalls. This article will help you to do just that.

The pitfalls of river cruising for people with limited mobility

If you can climb a flight of 12-15 steps (even with help and a rest at the top), then you should manage just fine on a river cruise. The reason why this is so important is that on-board the vast majority of ships, the elevator only serves some floors.

River cruise ships have to be fairly low in order to pass under bridges, and for this reason, the sun deck is usually only accessible by stairs. On a few vessels, such as the newer Uniworld ships, there is a chair lift to take passengers up to the top deck, but this is very rare.

The walkway on to a river ship is nothing like the walkway on to an ocean cruise ship. The gangplank is very narrow and often doesn’t have a sturdy handrail – more often than not it’s just a rope.

Depending on the water level, you may board the ship on different decks. This can mean that the gangplank is sloping up or down towards the ship. Sometimes, two or three ships are moored alongside each other. Passengers on the outermost ships, therefore, have to negotiate the gangplanks that link the ships together, which are often located on the top deck.

Storage for mobility aids

With most river cruise ship cabins too small to store a wheelchair, and equipment not being allowed to be left in the corridor for health and safety reasons, the storing of mobility aids can cause an issue. It is for that reason that most river cruise lines have stated that any wheelchairs brought on board have to be collapsible so that they can be stored under the bed when not in use.

Most river cruise lines also specify that wheelchair users are required to have a travel companion who is able to assist them. Despite this official line, you’ll probably find that crew members are willing to lend a hand with embarkation and disembarkation. However, at certain times, like when you need to fold your wheelchair to store in under the bed and get it back out again in the morning, you’ll need someone with you who is able to do this.

Saga river cruises

Most river cruise excursions are walking tours and require a good level of fitness. You will find that some river cruise lines categorise their excursions and that slower-pace tours are available.

For any tours that involve coach travel, passengers will need to be able to store any mobility aids beneath the coach and climb the four or so steps on to the coach.

As excursions are generally included in the price of a river cruise, you’ll be wasting money if you can’t join them. A good option for someone who doesn’t want to take any excursions is an Amadeus or CriosiEurope river cruise, as these don’t include excursions.

Portugal - The Douro river

The good news for disabled travellers is that many important towns and cities are located on the banks of Europe’s waterways, meaning that attractions are usually very close by, with no need for a bus or taxi.

The bad news, however, is that many of Europe’s historic towns have cobbled streets. European kerbs can also be much higher than those in the UK. If you’d like to explore independently, your cruise director will be able to suggest the best routes to take.

Itineraries

One of the highlights of any river cruise holiday, as admiring the scenery pass you by from the ship. If you’d like this to be the focus of your holiday, it would be wise to choose an itinerary that has lots of sailing time and fewer days in port.

Popular options are the Danube and the Rhine . These long stretches of river have stunning, UNESCO-listed scenery and are also ideal for first-time river cruisers.

Viking River Cruises Accessibility

Viking River Cruises endeavors to reasonably accommodate special access needs, but they cannot guarantee that they will be able to do so in all cases. Guests are strongly encouraged to advise their agents of any accessibility requirements prior to booking so we can work with Viking to determine if reasonable accommodations are available.

We recommend that travelers with disabilities cruise with Viking Rivers along with an adult passenger that can help them maneuver, especially while on a walking tour where the older streets are sometimes uneven and made of cobblestone. As each ship has its own design, you’ll want to speak with one of our cruise consultants to determine which ships will accommodate your needs. For instance, many of Viking’s river ships have elevators to go between decks, but some do not.

Please request the appropriate accessibility form for you and your doctor to review, sign and submit to Viking River Cruises. Passengers are requested to advise Viking in writing, at or prior to the time a cruise tour is booked, of any physical, emotional or mental condition which may require professional attention during the cruise tour, including if a passenger requires the use of a wheelchair or other mobility equipment, not to exceed 22” in width.

Passenger must bring and be solely responsible for all necessary items related to the medical condition or mobility challenge. If a mobility, medical, physical, emotional or mental condition arises after the cruise tour is booked, the passenger is requested to advise Viking in writing immediately.

Guide To Accessible River Cruising - Traveling With Disabilities

wheelchair accessible river cruise ship

Leisure, culture, and appealing facilities draw senior travelers and baby boomers closer to river cruises. There seems to be no upper limit or holding back when it comes to river cruising. However, given the features aboard the best river cruises in the world, you might think it is appropriate for passengers traveling with disabilities.

Unfortunately, this is not the case! River cruises present various challenges for disabled passengers, both on and off the ship. People traveling with disabilities, wheelchairs, or difficulty walking need to know the forthcoming pitfalls before booking their tickets. From a shortage of accessible staterooms to activities and excursions, there are plenty of challenges awaiting passengers traveling with disabilities. It is not a smooth sail ahead!

However, it is not just bad news and challenges for us all. The correct information and details can tell you precisely what you should be expecting. You can find a river cruise that offers a satisfying experience to passengers traveling with disabilities too. You just need to do your homework right!

Here is Leisure’s guide to accessible river cruising.

Choosing the right river cruise

wheelchair accessible river cruise ship

It is tough to find the correct information about the various facilities available for disabled passengers on the websites and their glossy brochures. River cruises might look stunning and almost the same on the outside but are incredibly different on the inside. If you are concerned about how your disabilities or mobility issues might impact your vacation, you should ask the following questions before booking your cruise.

The first detailed information you require is to ensure the correct configuration for your cabin. River cruise cabins are smaller in comparison to hotel rooms. And in some cases, some river cruises might not offer you a stateroom at all. Some provide a tiny number of cabins or accessible cabins, while others might have a modified cabin with wide doors. You just need to know if you choose the right river cruise since suitable cabins are not always readily available.

You should enquire about the doors, whether they can open easily so your wheelchair can go inside. You should also find out if there is enough space to meet your mobility needs and storage requirements. Your equipment should be stored inside the cabin and not in the corridor because of safety regulations.

Although it is extremely rare to find a bathtub on a river cruise, you should ask questions like if they have a shower stall or a fixed door on their shower stall with limited access. Some cabin bathrooms have a small door that folds back to create a larger bathroom space.

You should also inquire about your bathroom configurations, especially if you are not getting a particular accessible room to book.

Elevators

Most of today’s cruise ships offer elevators indoors. But the number of floors they serve can vary. River cruises have to pass through low bridges, and therefore the sun deck might only be available by stairs. Some of these river cruise ships have unique chairs that lift to take their wheelchair-accessible passengers up to the top deck. Uniworld, Algeria Charter Ships, and Vantage Vessels have some of the options. However, not all cruise ships have these facilities. They are pretty rare on a river cruise.

Accessible Excursions

wheelchair accessible river cruise ship

Daily excursions are usually included in your river cruising fare. You will not get the correct value for money if you are not joining most of them. Usually, there are options for wheelchair-accessible passengers who will be easily able to navigate through these activities. Traveling with disabilities might sound easy on some of these river cruises. Still, not every single tour and excursion will be available for you.

Considering the European river cruises, they go through historic waterways, through many important cities and vineyards. This is an excellent opportunity for passengers traveling with disabilities since they can visit the museums, shops, churches, restaurants, and other attractions along the path without needing bus transfers.

Here, Viking river cruises have various central mooring sports as they own their docks. You should look for cruises that offer walking tours on a gradable basis. This means they are differentiating between their walking excursions based on people’s fitness levels. Slower walking tours suggest people do not need to walk many steps, which is exceptionally suitable for passengers traveling with disabilities or in wheelchairs.

The bad news here, however, is that many old towns in Europe still have cobbled streets. These streets can present various problems for people in wheelchairs.

Your cruise director can also advise you on various suitable tours for multiple individuals, as per their mobility needs. They can also suggest multiple places where such passengers can rest or offer an alternative attraction that is also wheelchair accessible. For example, an alternative short and easy excursion instead of a visit to a castle requires long walks on uneven steps.

For excursions that involve bus traveling, coaches might not be able to take you places. As a passenger, you will require lifting the wheelchair and other mobility aids onto the bus and would be required to climb the steps to board the bus. Considering the repercussions and potential pitfalls of this plan, you would want to research ports on the itinerary you are considering to avoid getting stuck at multiple ports in a row that you cannot explore or navigate.

If the excursions do not suit you, the proximity of town centers and the docking points make it easier for independent travelers to explore the town centers on their own. This is great since many of the waterfronts, besides the rivers, are pretty flat in terms of topography and offer many places for stopping for snacks and drinks. However, since the prices of these excursions are included in the cruise fare, it is entirely up to you to decide if the trip is worth your time and money.

Picking the itinerary

The highlight of any excellent river cruise is the ever-changing panorama of scenic beauty, which can be easily admired from the comforts of your sails. Passengers traveling with disabilities or are mobility-impaired should choose itineraries that cover longer distances on rivers with plenty of time on the cruise. This means that you can spend more time aboard the ship with your loved ones and other fellow passengers. This also comes as an excellent tip for people who are cruising for the very first time.

Danube and Rhine river cruises are some of the most popular river cruises . These highlights include a day cruise along the Middle Rhine, which is UNESCO-listed and famous for the Lorelie Rock. Similarly, the UNESCO World Heritage Wachau Valley is also a great option along the dramatic stretches of the Danube river.

The Main Cruises line offers a 15-day journey from Budapest to Amsterdam along the Danube and the Rhine, offering an easy way to explore five different countries without having the hassle of traveling or exploring on land.

France and Portugal are great options too and are extremely beautiful. However, their itineraries clock up very few river miles between different ports. This means the passengers traveling with disabilities might not witness the scenic beauty as much if they choose to stay on board. In contrast, others are busy with different shore excursions.

The northern France itineraries include one whole day at various sites like the Normandy landing beaches, landmarks for the second world war, which take you on a long bus journey to these locations. This is not highly suitable for people with mobility issues.

For people traveling with disabilities, choosing to cruise through wine-growing regions around south France is better suited since they stop at fascinating locations like Lyon, Avignon, and Macon. These locations can be easily explored without having to transfer yourself through a coach.

All in all, it pays to study your itinerary well before you make any decisions. However, it should be noted that though some tours and excursions are included in your fare, people do not have an obligation to join these activities. A few people always decide to stay back while the ship is docked near the port. So, you will not feel alone.

Accessible River Cruises

wheelchair accessible river cruise ship

Most cruise ships cater to the British markets through various tour operators. Out of all these, MS Alegria is perhaps the only river cruise that offers ease of accessibility to passengers traveling with disabilities. The cruise accommodates approximately 100 passengers, of which it can carry ten disabled passengers at a time for one sailing. The cruise also comes with manual and electric wheelchairs, foldable electric scooters, and walking-friendly frames. Passengers can bring the larger electric scooters to use for their shore excursions as well.

For passengers traveling with disabilities, cabins on the cruise feature a pretty large doorway, wet-room-based bathrooms with comfortable seats installed in the shower areas. Other cabins also have wheelchair-accessible doorways and stools, which can be provided at passenger’s request.

Passengers can also rent a ceiling-mount hoist to assist their loved ones in and out of bed, along with other mobility equipment like a walking frame to be used on the ship. Items available on the ship do not include any significant medical equipment. However, the ship does offer a small oxygen cylinder with prior arrangements.

Aboard this cruise ship, three elevators link the passenger decks and two chairs that take disabled passengers to the top sun deck. The cruise also comes with wheelchair-friendly wide corridors and wheelchair-accessible docking to aid passengers in their shore excursions.

Other river cruises

AmaWaterways: Passengers aboard the AmaWaterways are recommended to bring along a collapsible wheelchair stored inside their cabins. All rooms on this ship are wide enough to allow wheelchairs to go in and out. Some of their ships like AmaSonata, AmaSerena, AmaPrima, and AmaReina have specially designed staterooms with large wide doors and a modified bathroom for passengers traveling with disabilities. These cabins also come with appropriate emergency doors that lead directly out of the ship, accommodating a wheelchair in cases of emergencies.

Every ship from AmaWaterways has an elevator serving all the floors, except the lower deck and the sun deck. However, the good news is, crewmembers will be happy to assist passengers traveling with disabilities towards the top deck.

In addition to this, the shore excursions are fully accessible to passengers traveling with disabilities. It is, of course, recommended by the cruise line for disabled passengers to travel with a caregiver to assist them during the vacation.

A-Rosa: This German-owned river cruise line offers one cabin suitable for passengers traveling with disabilities on their ship A-Rosa Viva. Aboard the ship, passengers can also carry their wheelchair and other mobility aid. Medical oxygen bottles can also be carried on this cruise, however, with prior notice. When available, the crew helps passengers on and off the ship and around the stairs. However, caregivers should be present to assist as well.

CroisiEurope: All of their ships are premium-rated and offer completely accessible cabin rooms with all the necessary equipment and wide doors to meet the requirements of passengers traveling with disabilities. This three-deck ship has an elevator that goes up and down the ship, except the sun deck. Disabled passengers can travel with their caregiver to assist them since the crew is limited on this ship. Passengers must also connect with the cruise line before booking their seats on this vessel.

Uniworld: Although the ship does not offer wheelchair-accessible cabins, their shower stalls do have grab bars for people traveling with disabilities. Most of the river cruises by Uniworld have an elevator to serve passenger decks and a chair-lift to lead them to the sun deck. You can also get a travel-sized, completely collapsible wheelchair onboard.

Shore excursions by the cruise line include various programs rated suitable for “gentle walking,” which means passengers traveling with disabilities can also participate. The line, however, does ask passengers to walk unassisted for guided tours, so if a wheelchair is essential offshore, guests would be recommended to explore the locations independently.

Vantage: The Vantage cruise ships are fully equipped with hydraulic chairs between top passenger decks and the sun deck. Some elevators serve the inside decks. Their cruise ship, Discovery II, offers handicapped cabins and accessible restrooms in public areas. Passengers aboard the ship also get access to extra wheelchairs that can be carried onboard. The only policy that Vantage cruises strictly stick to is for passengers traveling with disabilities to be accompanied by someone who can responsibly take care of them.

Viking: One of the most extensive river cruises welcomes passengers traveling with disabilities with a smile. However, this smile comes with particular challenges existing onboard and in their planned shore excursions. Viking does not offer a designated wheelchair-friendly stateroom. Most of their ships do come with elevators. Still, some of them have a split-level deck which makes movement difficult for mobility-impaired people.

Their shore excursions include walking across roads laden with cobblestones or sometimes even steps. So, physically challenged passengers would require an extra pair of hands assisting them at all times since crew availability is limited. Collapsible wheelchairs are allowed aboard the ship, but your motorized scooters are not permitted due to lack of space. Guests with special medical needs - physical and unique, are recommended to check with the ship first to gain information on the ship’s layout or their questions before boarding.

Final Words:

So, should you go cruising this year?

Traveling with disabilities can be easy if you are choosing the right cruise ship. Keep in mind all the abovementioned technicalities to board the river cruise of your dreams. However, if you miss out on even one aspect, your river cruise vacation could throw a damper on your plans.

Choose what’s best for you and your loved ones. Happy vacationing to you!

Accessible Cruises for Disabled People

Do you offer cruises for disabled people.

At Limitless Travel, we're proud providers of  disabled friendly holidays  across the  UK  and to destinations  abroad . We’re overjoyed to now also offer luxury accessible cruises for disabled adults that are fully accessible. We currently travel to the following destinations in conjunction with P&O Cruises:

Norwegian Fjords

Portugal & Spain

Mediterranean & Iberia

We're also hoping to further expand our range of destinations in the near future.

Travelling and staying aboard P&O's world-renowned vessels, you'll have the opportunity to explore some of Europe's top holiday hotspots and enjoy all the world-class facilities associated with these fantastic ships.

As with all Limitless Travel tours, all of our disabled cruises have been vetted beforehand to ensure they're wheelchair accessible and disabled friendly. While some of our itineraries feature destinations that can only be reached by small tenders that may not cater for disabled travellers, we aim to highlight every one of those instances in the relevant holiday guide.

How accessible are the cruise ships on your cruises for disabled people?

On our current cruises, you'll travel aboard P&O's Iona, Aurora and Arvia cruise ships. All three vessels are disabled friendly and feature fully accessible cabins and facilities throughout. However, wheelchair accessible cabins are limited, particularly on the Iona, so booking early is always a good idea.

If you would like to find out more detailed information about the accessibility on any of these ships, we recommend phoning 0800 711 7232 and speaking to a Limitless advisor. They'll be able to answer any and all of the questions you have. Alternatively, you can find ship-specific information for the  Iona ,  Aurora  and  Arvia  by following the links.

What facilities are available on your accessible cruises?

The overwhelming majority of the excursions included on our cruises are fully accessible and disabled friendly. We even offer a 'potter-around-the-port' service exclusively to Limitless travellers to help you make the most of your time onshore.

However, there are a small number of locations where tenders are used to reach the port from the ship. In some instances, these won't be suitable for disabled travellers. Wherever this is the case, we've highlighted it in the relevant holiday guide.

Do you provide care on your disabled cruises?

We offer a variety of holiday  care packages  on each and every one of our cruises for disabled adults. From emotional support to one-to-one care, our qualified and experienced carers are on hand to take care of you on your holiday.

All Limitless travellers receive group support as standard. However, we can also build you a bespoke care package that's tailored to your needs should you require it. For us, the most important thing is that Limitless travellers feel safe, secure and confident to travel. As a result, we'll go out of our way to make sure you get the right level of support on our wheelchair accessible cruises.

The best way to find out more about our care packages is to give a Limitless advisor a ring on 0800 711 7232. Alternatively, you can take a look at our  dedicated care packages page  for a comprehensive overview.

How do I book wheelchair accessible cruises for disabled adults?

Accessible cruises for disabled people are easy to book with Limitless Travel. Simply call or email one of our specialist travel advisors on 0800 711 7232. They'll be happy to tell you more about our cruise destinations, the ships you'll travel on and our care and support packages.

All you need to do is give us a call, let us know of any special assistance or mobility equipment you might need and then you can relax and start looking forward to your holiday!

If you’d prefer a disabled holiday on dry land, we also offer a fantastic array of popular holiday destinations in the UK, Europe and further afield. Whether you want to discover fairytale  Edinburgh , get a feel for flamenco in  Andalucía  or sun yourself in a  Caribbean paradise , we've got a holiday for you. Limitless is committed to ensuring only the best wheelchair-accessible cabins are offered to our disabled guests.

By working with only the best cruise lines, we can help you have the best holiday possible!

How can I request special accommodations for my specific disability or medical condition?

All Limitless travellers receive group support as standard. However, we can also build you a bespoke care package that's tailored to your needs should you require it.

Once you’ve booked and consulted with Limitless, and let us know the accommodations you need to have a truly spectacular holiday, we’ll quickly pass this information along to the cruise company, P&O, and make sure everything you need is on-board.

Limitless and P&O have a close relationship due to their incredible care and attentiveness to disabled passengers on-board their ships.

Do you offer adapted cabins on your cruise holidays?

Yes, the cruise lines we work with offer adapted cabins specifically designed for guests with mobility issues or disabilities.

These cabins are equipped with wider doorways, roll-in showers, grab bars, and other accessibility features to ensure a comfortable and safe stay. It's advisable to book these cabins in advance due to limited availability.

If you have specific requirements or need further information, please contact the Limitless team.

We're committed to ensuring all our guests have an enjoyable and hassle-free holiday experience.

Do cruise ships have accessible features for disabled passengers?

Absolutely! Cruise ships are equipped with a variety of accessible features to ensure that passengers with disabilities can have a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

These accessible features include specially designed cabins with wider doorways and grab bars in the bathrooms, making them more user-friendly. The ships are also designed with ramps and elevators to facilitate easy movement around the vessel.

Additionally, many cruise lines provide assistance at ports and during excursions to accommodate all passengers.

Are Viking River Cruises Wheelchair Friendly: Everything You Need to Know

Viking River Cruises, known for it’s luxurious and immersive travel experiences, has become increasingly popular among travelers seeking to explore the world's most captivating waterways. However, for those with limited mobility who rely on wheelchair access and accommodations, the question arises: are Viking River Cruises wheelchair friendly?

Does Viking Have Wheelchairs?

Viking River Cruises does provide wheelchairs for the convenience of their passengers. Their standard wheelchair rental is the most affordable option available, allowing for easy accessibility on the cruise ship. These wheelchairs are lightweight and can be easily transported, making them ideal for individuals with mobility restrictions.

The lightweight transport wheelchair offered by Viking is of medical quality and meets the necessary standards for safety and comfort. It’s designed with detachable, swing-away footrests, providing added convenience for passengers. Additionally, this wheelchair can be folded and stored in the trunk of any car, making it highly accessible for those who require mobility assistance while on land.

As such, their wheelchairs are designed to facilitate easy movement throughout the ship, allowing individuals with mobility limitations to navigate the various areas and amenities with ease. The wheelchairs are also equipped with features that ensure a comfortable and secure ride for passengers.

This will enable the crew to make necessary arrangements and accommodations for individuals with mobility limitations. By providing this information prior to boarding, Viking River Cruises can ensure a seamless and inclusive experience for all passengers.

Accessibility Options for Other Mobility Aids, Such as Scooters or Walkers

When considering Viking River Cruises, it’s essential to know about their accessibility options for other mobility aids, including scooters or walkers. The company is committed to providing a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all guests, including those with limited mobility. While Viking River Cruises welcomes mobility aids like scooters, walkers, and manual wheelchairs, it’s important to note that the ship’s design may have some limitations.

For example, the width of the cabin doorways and corridors might be narrower than some mobility aids require. Additionally, the ship may have thresholds or steps that could present obstacles for certain mobility aids. However, Viking River Cruises aims to accommodate guests to the best of their ability.

If you plan to bring a mobility aid, it’s advisable to discuss your specific needs with Viking River Cruises before your trip. They can provide detailed information about the accessibility features onboard and any limitations you may encounter. This way, you can ensure a safe and comfortable experience while enjoying the breathtaking riverside views and cultural experiences that Viking River Cruises offer.

The accessibility of cruises for people with disabilities varies depending on the type of ship and the cruise line. Oceangoing vessels generally offer more disability-friendly amenities and services, while some river cruise ships can also accommodate passengers with disabilities to some extent. Many cruise lines have dedicated departments that aim to assist and accommodate passengers with disabilities. However, it’s important to note that there may still be limitations and challenges in ensuring full accessibility and inclusivity for individuals with disabilities on these cruises.

Are Cruises Good for People With Disabilities?

Cruises can be a great option for people with disabilities, offering a unique and accessible way to travel the world. While oceangoing vessels tend to be more disability-friendly, with larger ships offering more amenities and accessible features, some river cruise ships are also able to accommodate passengers with disabilities, albeit with certain limitations.

Most cruise lines recognize the importance of accessibility and have dedicated departments to assist passengers with disabilities. These departments can help with pre-cruise planning, ensuring that accommodations and amenities are suitable for individual needs. They can also offer guidance on accessible shore excursions, providing options for passengers to explore destinations with ease.

When it comes to river cruises, it’s important to note that many river cruise ships are smaller and may not have the same level of accessibility as larger oceangoing vessels. It’s always a good idea to inquire with the cruise line about their accessibility options before booking.

While not all river cruises may be suitable for wheelchair users or individuals with limited mobility, some routes may be more accessible than others. For example, cruises along the Rhine or Danube rivers in Europe tend to have more developed infrastructure and may offer better accessibility options.

They can provide specific information about the ships accessibility features, cabin options, and available amenities.

From accessible cabins and public areas to ramps and elevators, Viking aims to create a comfortable and inclusive environment for all guests. Moreover, their dedicated staff members are trained to assist individuals with disabilities and offer personalized support throughout the cruise. However, it’s essential for wheelchair-bound travelers to consider certain factors such as the availability of mobility aids and limitations in specific port destinations.

MS Alegria - Fully Accessible River Boat Cruise

Posted: October 15, 2022

River cruising are more often than not difficult for wheelchair users.

Rarely do they have lifts, let alone accessible cabins. Gangways always seem narrow and unstable – and most of the excursions are walking tours over Europe’s rough terrain.

The MS Alegria, Dutch-owned vessel with 50 cabins, many of which are fully adapted for people who use a wheelchair. And this means properly adapted, Grab rails, shower stools, detachable shower heads, enough turning space for a wheelchair in the cabins, wide corridors and two big lifts accessing all decks.

The bar unlike most bars on a cruise ship or even on land have a low service area, library and restaurant and tables are high enough for a wheelchair user to sit at in comfort.

All kinds of mobility aids are welcome manual or electric chairs, scooters and walking frames. The shore excursions have been specially adapted for the less mobile.

MS Alegria sails on the Rhine and the Dutch waterways.

Take a voyage on the calmer side of life with a river cruise.

It’s easy to see why river cruising has become such a popular holiday choice . This relaxed approach to adventure will have you meandering past magical castles, exploring historical cities, and enjoying the beautiful scenery our riversides have to offer.

Because of this, river cruises are extremely popular in the over 50s. Veterans of life looking to take a step back and simply enjoy the view.

But difficulties with mobility can put a stop to the adventure.

Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be that way. Many river cruise operators have improved their ship, cabin, and excursion offerings to ensure every passenger is included in the fun.

So don’t let limited mobility hold you back.

Discover how to plan the river cruise of a lifetime, no matter what your accessibility needs are.

Making cruising easier

Making your cruising experience easier starts with you .

Limited mobility doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the experiences available, but it does mean you may have to consider alternative solutions for your comfort and safety.

So, when considering your next river cruise , remember the following:

Ask the right questions

Finding the information for accessible cruising solutions isn’t always easy online.

The best option available is to get in touch with the operator directly. They’ll be able to walk you through what’s available and what life on board will be like for you.

You’ll want to find out:

Cabin Size and Configuration Accessible Bathrooms Elevators Gangways Dining Options Excursions

But we all know calling operators can be time-consuming and difficult. And so, the team at AG River Cruises will be more than happy to gather all this information for you and make the necessary arrangements on your behalf. Give us a call, and we’ll find out all you need to know.

Plan the trip around your needs, not the other way around

With so many exciting cities and ports just waiting for you to explore, it can be tempting to book now and think about logistics later.

When you have limited mobility, whether that means you use a wheelchair, walking stick, or scooter , you need to plan the trip around your abilities.

It’s all about you.

Choose excursions and cities that are easier to navigate, steering clear of cobbled streets and miles of steps. There’s still plenty to enjoy, so that you won’t be missing out. But keeping this in mind will make your trip more enjoyable.

Advocate for Yourself

Last but certainly not least, advocate for yourself.

Unfortunately, our modern world isn’t nearly as easy for those with limited mobility to navigate as it should be.

This means you have to put yourself first when it comes to planning and booking your river cruise adventures. So, use your voice and advocate for your needs.

Which river cruise operators offer limited mobility accessibility?

Now you know what questions you need to ask, let’s dive deeper into what cruise operators can offer you.

Here’s a rundown of the cruise lines that offer accessibility features and what you can expect.

wheelchair accessible river cruise ship

Every single one of CroisiEurope’s premium-rated ships has accessible cabins that feature wide doors and excellent equipment for passengers with limited mobility . With elevators that go to every level except the sun deck, passengers should travel with someone who can assist them when the crew can’t.

CroisiEurope encourages passengers with limited mobility to get in touch before booking. This way, they can recommend the best ship and room for your specific needs.

wheelchair accessible river cruise ship

One of the few liners that offer specifically limited mobility suites . These rooms are located right near the reception desk for ease, and all feature wheelchair-accessible doors, a bathtub with grab handles, and a wheel-in shower with stool and rail. Like most other cruise operators, there are elevators that serve all levels apart from the sun deck.

Scenic offers extra excursions that are designed to be accessible for as many guests as possible.

Who is the most accessible cruise operator?

While each of these standard operators offers accessible options, there’s only one cruise liner that goes the extra mile – and that’s Fly Accessible Travel Netherlands Cruises .

They have a fully wheelchair-accessible ship set over 4 levels called the MS Viola that set sail in May 2019 . This offering means that everyone can experience the luxury of a river cruise, no matter their mobility needs.

On the Viola, passengers can enjoy a cruise along the rivers of Germany and the Netherlands , enjoying the views from their favourite place on board, thanks to full accessibility no matter where you go.

On a full-board basis, each cabin comes equipped with 2 electric high-low beds and access to 1 large fully adapted bathroom available per 2 cabins.

Wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and walking aids are allowed aboard and available to use throughout the trip. And if you need a little extra help, there’s additional equipment loaded on the ship, including electric hoists and shower chairs .

Once off the ship and ready to explore, Fly Accessible has local tour guides who know the best routes around town for those with limited mobility. That means you get to enjoy the same beautiful scenery and magical locations that everyone else does.

Get ready for adventure

Finding the perfect river cruise when you have limited mobility isn’t always easy.

By advocating for yourself, asking the right questions, and knowing which cruise operators have the best reputation for accessibility, you can climb on board and enjoy a relaxing cruise like everyone else.

But remember, you don’t have to do it alone.

6 tips for going on a cruise as a wheelchair user

Miami Beach, Government Cut, Tourists in Wheelchair watching Cruise Ship

Traveling in a wheelchair undoubtedly comes with its challenges, but almost any wheelchair user will probably agree that cruising comes with far fewer challenges than air travel and most other modes of transportation. On a cruise, you don't need to worry about finding an accessible taxi or calling in advance to check accessibility when going to dinner.

Instead, you can hop in an elevator and in less than five minutes, you'll be ready for dinner in a nice cruise ship restaurant . Life on board a cruise ship is easy for wheelchair users because it's like an entire city is right there on the ship. Whether you want to lounge by the pool and drink pina coladas all day, see a Broadway-style show or even gamble in the onboard casino, nearly anything is possible within the confines of a cruise ship.

While cruising is one of the easier ways to travel with a disability, wheelchair users should keep a few things in mind when considering a cruise vacation. If you're planning a cruise, here are six tips for cruising as a wheelchair user to help ensure you have an enjoyable — and accessible — cruise vacation.

Book as early as possible

wheelchair accessible river cruise ship

Some of the larger cruise ships can hold around 5,000 people. Royal Caribbean 's Icon of the Seas , currently the world's largest ship, carries 7,600 passengers. However, even with that much space, wheelchair-accessible cabins can be limited. Typically, a cruise ship only offers a few dozen accessible rooms, and they are often booked quickly. (MSC Cruises tends to provide more accessible cabins than other cruise lines. MSC Seaside offers 51 accessible cabins.)

If you're thinking about taking a cruise, it's incredibly important to do the proper research and reserve your accessible cabin as early as possible. Booking a year or more in advance is great, especially for Alaska cruises . Cruises to Alaska often sell out of accessible cabins in record time, so keep an eye out for on-sale dates if there's a specific cruise you'd like to book.

Choose a cruise line that works for you

wheelchair accessible river cruise ship

Generally, the bigger the ship, the more accessible it is. For example, cruise lines like Carnival , Royal Caribbean and Disney have at least a few thousand passengers on every cruise, so the ships are more likely to accommodate wheelchair users. Holland America and Celebrity Cruises cater to older travelers, so you can also expect good access on their ships. However, smaller ships (and especially river cruises ) are typically not wheelchair-friendly.

Newer ships are also more accessible than older vessels. If you see that a brand-new ship is coming out from one of the big cruise lines, you can almost guarantee that accessibility will be fantastic.

wheelchair accessible river cruise ship

To determine whether a ship is the right one for you, go to your chosen cruise line's website and pull up the deck plan of your desired ship. Accessible cabins will be indicated by a wheelchair symbol.

You can also do a Google search for "(cruise ship name) wheelchair access review" and read reviews from other wheelchair users. Nothing beats that firsthand perspective from a fellow wheelchair user.

Find out if ports of call are docked or tendered

wheelchair accessible river cruise ship

Rolling around a cruise ship as a wheelchair user is spectacular, but what about exploring the various ports of call? Visiting various destinations on a single itinerary is one of the big advantages of a cruise vacation.

Wheelchair users should choose cruise itineraries where ships dock at the ports of call. Once the ship is tied up to the pier, wheelchair users can simply roll down a ramp to disembark the ship.

The alternative is that the ship anchors offshore and uses smaller, typically inaccessible, boats called tenders to take passengers ashore. It's difficult, and sometimes impossible, for wheelchair users to board these boats and transfer to shore.

You can find out if a port is docked or tendered by viewing the itinerary online or calling the cruise line.

Rent mobility equipment

wheelchair accessible river cruise ship

For many wheelchair users, one of the most difficult parts of traveling is taking along medical and mobility equipment. As someone who travels with a motorized wheelchair, a shower/commode wheelchair, a patient lift, wheelchair chargers and other medical equipment, I know firsthand how challenging it is to haul everything around once you reach a destination.

To make the process easier, companies such as Special Needs at Sea and Scootaround will allow you to rent mobility equipment that will be waiting in your cabin when you board the ship. Cruise travelers can rent wheelchairs, hospital beds, patient lifts, oxygen concentrators and more.

Reserve shore excursions with accessibility-focused companies

wheelchair accessible river cruise ship

If cruise lines are lacking in one department, it's the availability of wheelchair-accessible shore excursions. Some cruise lines do offer accessible shore excursions in certain destinations, but the choices can be limited.

Royal Caribbean offers accessible shore excursions in several port cities in the Caribbean, Europe and the Mediterranean. Passengers must fill out a request form prior to the cruise. Additionally, accessible shore excursions through Carnival Cruise Line are marked with a wheelchair icon. They include tours in Valletta, Malta; Glasgow, Scotland; Ketchikan, Alaska; and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

If your particular cruise line doesn't provide a good selection of wheelchair-friendly excursions, consider booking a tour with an external company. In most ports of call, especially in the Caribbean and Europe, you can find local companies that have adapted transportation. It might take a bit of a Google search to find them, but they are out there.

For example, Sage Traveling offers wheelchair-friendly shore excursions in dozens of popular cruise destinations. Even better, the company is managed by a wheelchair user, so you can rest assured that accessibility will be top-notch.

Let an accessibility specialist plan your cruise

If researching and planning a wheelchair-friendly cruise seems daunting, let someone else do the work for you. Some travel companies specialize in accessible tours — including cruises.

Easy Access Travel specializes in both accessible cruise vacations and packaged land tours for travelers with physical limitations. The company has sailed with such lines as Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Princess Cruises , Celebrity Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line .

In addition to offering accessible shore excursions, the above-mentioned Sage Traveling organizes wheelchair-friendly cruise vacations to the Caribbean, Europe and the Mediterranean.

How to Select a River Cruise as an Older Woman

Selecting a river cruise as an older woman requires careful consideration of several factors to ensure a comfortable, enjoyable, and enriching travel experience.

Destination and Itinerary

Consider the destinations and itinerary options offered by various river cruise lines. Think about your interests and preferences – whether you prefer exploring historic cities, scenic landscapes, cultural sites, or wildlife-rich regions. Research the ports of call, shore excursions, and onboard activities to find an itinerary that aligns with your interests.

Cruise Line and Ship

Research different river cruise lines and their reputations for quality, service, and amenities. Consider factors such as the size of the ship, onboard facilities (e.g., dining options, entertainment, wellness amenities), and the level of inclusivity (e.g., all-inclusive vs. à la carte pricing). Look for cruise lines that cater to mature travelers and offer amenities and activities tailored to your preferences.

Accommodations

Pay attention to the types of accommodations offered onboard, including cabin sizes, configurations, and amenities. Consider your preferences for comfort, privacy, and accessibility. Some river cruise ships offer special amenities for older travelers, such as accessible cabins, elevators, and mobility aids.

Season and Weather

Take into account the season and weather conditions of your chosen destination. Consider factors such as temperature, humidity, rainfall, and seasonal attractions or events. Depending on your preferences, you may prefer cruising during the shoulder seasons to avoid crowds and extreme weather conditions.

Solo Travel vs. Group Travel

Decide whether you prefer traveling solo or as part of a group. Some river cruise lines offer special programs and accommodations for solo travelers, while others cater to group travel with organized tours and activities. Consider your comfort level and social preferences when choosing the type of travel experience that best suits you.

Health and Mobility Considerations

Take into account any health or mobility considerations that may impact your travel experience. Consider factors such as accessibility of ports and excursions, onboard amenities for wellness and relaxation, and medical facilities and services available onboard. Be sure to communicate any special needs or requirements to the cruise line in advance.

Reviews and Recommendations

Read reviews and testimonials from other travelers, particularly older adults, who have experienced river cruises. Seek recommendations from friends, family, or travel advisors who can provide insights and advice based on their own experiences. Look for reviews that address factors such as service, accommodations, dining, and overall satisfaction.

By considering these factors and doing thorough research, you can select a river cruise that meets your preferences, interests, and travel expectations as an older woman.

Bark River Sports Complex Park gets new inclusive play equipment

BARK RIVER, Mich. (WLUC) - Volunteers started installing new play equipment at a playground in Bark River Township Thursday.

Jane Lanaville is a charter member of the Delta Menominee County Heart of the North Lions Club. Lanaville said the new additions will make the Bark River Sports Complex Park more accessible.

“What we did is we chose more pieces that are inclusive, which means more children with disabilities can play on them also,” Lanaville said.

The Heart of the North Lions Club has been fundraising for the project for two years. They’ve raised more than $130,000 with help from the Bark River Lions Club, Lions Club International and other donations and grants.

Lanaville said the inclusive playground will serve more than Bark River.

“I mean we have what two-three different school districts within a 50-mile radius,” Lanaville said. “That tells you we got a wide variety of children in this area with different abilities.”

New play equipment includes a wheelchair-accessible ‘whirl,’ inclusive swing with secure belts so kids don’t fall out and a spongy turf flooring safe for all kids.

While the inclusive equipment is only going into the playground at the sports complex, the Heart of the North Lions Club is also improving Bark River’s downtown park.

Lanaville said the club already replaced the fence, made parking safer and removed a couple of older play pieces.

“We kept the old merry-go-round. We’re keeping the old spiral slide,” Lanaville said. “We’re keeping the two swing sets, but we’re going to update the actual swings.”

Lanaville said they are continuing to raise money for the equipment they want to install at the downtown park. If they reach their goal of $46,000 through Patronicity , they will qualify for a matching grant of $46,000 from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

When complete, the two projects will have cost more than $150,000.

“We want the kids to have somewhere safe to go and play. Somewhere where they can have a good time and not worry about, you know, dilapidated equipment or something breaking,” Lanaville said.

The club plans to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new play area at the sports complex on July 4.

The new play equipment being installed at the Bark River Township Sports Complex playground includes a wheelchair accessible "whirl," an inclusive swing with secure belts and a spongy turf flooring to help keep kids safe during play.
