I would highly recommend this hotel ”

My sister staying here for 2 nights we booked a room for family, honestly this is the best hotel that closed to the airport and nearby convinient stores, there is a pool upstairs and free breakfast in the morning, this is good hotel if you are celebrating birthdays or any events, you can order food too . The staff is very nice, room is very clean 🙂 Thanks urban

I decided to book this hotel because of the good reviews. My partner and I stayed here for 2 good days and everything was smooth. The location is great and accessible to almost everything. The room was a bit small though. The facilities were great as well and we were able to enjoy the pool area. They have karaoke and billiard as well. The staff were all friendly and nice. On the other hand, these are the things that bother us. The type of blanket placed on the bed wasn’t a good type that we could feel static electricity from time to time. It would be nice if they change it to regular comforter. They need to replace the shower in the bathroom because it looks the old type and broken. I also felt a discomfort on our first night and I was scratching my arms and legs the whole night. I got bed bug bites. My partner found 1 bed bug the next morning. I hope they would clean and disinfect the room thoroughly especially the bed area. Overall, we had a great stay and will definitely book this hotel again.

Great stay. After Midnight Check-in! Free breakfast.”

It was great and value for money for a transient stay at this place. Clean and comfortable. But wifi is weak at our room (507F). Breakfast Food was delicious but around 1-3 viands to choose only. Overall I will recommend the location. Very accessible to public transportation (bus/train/jeep).

Value for Money”

It was indeed a very nice experience staying at Urban Travellers Hotel. It gives the exact value for money and will definitely choose this hotel again once we go back to Manila. It is in the heart of the metro and is accessible to almost everything, from shopping malls, all sorts of transpo and even to tourist destinations/attractions. Our stay also comes with a complimentary breakfast served at their restaurant at the 2nd floor. They also have a pool and bar available at the 8th floor and my kids really loved and enjoyed the pool. Staff are also very welcoming and respectful of their guests. I give this hotel an 11/10 rating 6stars too..

Very nice place to stay”

The hotel location is exceptional, it is clean, quiet spacious with very accomodating and approachable staffs, i highly recommend it for other travellers in manila and im looking forward to stay again in this hotel, very good. And their complimentary breakfast is very good

Long Weekend: Moscow

Thought Moscow was full of spies, criminals and femmes fatales? Possibly a few… but it’s also got an abundance of art, festivals, nightlife – and a dead dictator to visit. Laura Gozzi paints the full picture.

urban travellers hotel

If you’ve never travelled to Russia, you’re probably struggling to imagine what Moscow is like, and if you know more than one person who has been, the chances are that you have heard extremely conflicting opinions about it. Throughout the Cold War, Moscow used to be the capital of the “other” world, the home of lofty ideals and harsh realities; today, many young Muscovites would rather talk about the city’s craft beer revolution than the Bolshevik one.

But Moscow’s strange charm remains. More often than not, the city doesn’t seem to make any sense: blonde girls in white furs and shiny leather boots stroll around the stalls in neighbourhood markets, buying cottage cheese and honey from old, toothless, dark-skinned Armenian men; the glitzy windows of Western clothes shops reflect the enormous, grey, terrifying façades of old Soviet government buildings. And in the midst of it all there is you, the visitor – the latest addition to a city that has never stopped growing and changing, carrying with it more history than one can imagine.

Stalin insisted that the metro stations be "palaces to the people".

Maybe that’s why there has never been a better time to visit Moscow: the eclectic mix of old, new and timeless makes it a truly unique destination that is neither Europe nor Asia, but on the cusp of both – retaining an air of chaotic vastness, frenzied life and bustling exhilaration. Moscow is likely to surprise, shock and seduce you. Get ready for a wild weekend.

Best of the Beaten Track

Walking around Moscow is not unlike skipping from one century to the next; the walls, streets and homes of the city are soaked in history, translating into a huge variety of attractions that reflect all strands of Russia’s convoluted past.

With its fiery red Historical Museum , the majestic Kremlin, the colourful domes of St Basil’s cathedral and the sparkle of the gigantic, 19th century shopping centre, Red Square is a sight to behold.

The Kremlin complex is home to a host of churches, museums and government buildings, but the visit can be expensive and time-consuming because of the infinite queues at the ticket office.

An unmissable (and free) sight is that of Vladimir Lenin’s embalmed body in the Lenin Mausoleum that stands outside the walls of the Kremlin; the atmosphere inside the huge marble chamber where the Soviet leader has been resting for 90 years is nothing short of surreal. Absolute silence and respectful attire is required.

Moscow city guide and travel tips

The two Tretyakov galleries are swarmed by tourists and art students at all times, but they offer a comprehensive introduction to Russian art from the 12th century until today. The “old Tretyakov” is a shrine to fine arts of the Imperial period; the “new Tretyakov” hosts a huge collection of Socialist Realist art. It’s surrounded by the small Park Muzeon , colloquially known as the “park of fallen statues” home to many derelict statues of Soviet statesman and rusty totalitarian sculptures.

If you’re amongst those who first fell in love with Russia through its marvellously bleak literature, you’ll appreciate the number of writers’ former apartments that have been turned into museums: the old homes of Pushkin, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and Bulgakov, to name a few, are beautifully preserved, often free of charge, and usually offer English-language tours.

Don’t fail to visit the huge and beautiful parks that offer more than just picnic space – Gorky Park, Kolomenskoe and Sokolniki turn into massive ice skating rinks in the winter and popular festival spots in the summer.

Hipster’s Guide

The looks you got when you announced you were going to visit Moscow will have already told you that you’re cool (or mad: even today, few people bother to jump over the visa, language, and Cold-War-misconceptions barriers and travel to Russia) but the stories you’ll bring back from your trip will be the stuff hipster dreams are made of.

Enter the marble gates of the VDNKH (acronym for All Russian Exhibition Centre) park and feel like you are stepping into a different universe. The massive grounds are filled with Lenin statues and elaborately decorated – and now crumbling – pavilions; erected in the 1930s, they each represent one of the former Soviet republics. As a whole, the park was designed to showcase the very best of Soviet manufacturing and agriculture; it became derelict in the 1990s, and today it’s a puzzling and mesmerising collection of derelict architecture, plus a Tupolev and an eerily empty luna park. Worth visiting, for you’ll probably never see anything like the VDNKH again.

Moscow attractions and things to do

Moscow’s tiniest gem is undoubtedly the Museum of the Metro ; hidden in the vaults above Sportivnaya metro station, it’s both dusty and charming, and tells the fascinating story of how the sprawling and architecturally stunning Muscovite metro was built. It’s also free.

The Museum of Soviet Arcade Machines is a similarly quirky venue – and it does what it says on the tin particularly well: for 350 roubles, you can use fifteen (out of forty) of the machines in the archaic arcade.

Experience & Events

If your travel dates are flexible, do your best to be in Moscow on the 9 th of May, or Victory Day: 70 years after Red Army defeated Nazi Germany (at a cost of 14 million Russian lives), the country still goes all-out with nation-wide military parades and elated, heartfelt enthusiasm (which, as some would say, Russians don’t usually manifest). Expect the major arteries of the city to be filled with cheering crowds, WW2 tanks, teary veterans and children waving red carnations. In the evening, head for Sparrow Hills, at the bottom of the striking, Stalinist building of Moscow State University, and watch the fireworks over the city with thousands of Muscovites.

Moscow circus, nightlife, bars and hipsters

Spend an afternoon at the circus: but first, make sure you pick the right one. A few have been going for decades and pride themselves on their authenticity… you can expect bears on bicycles, clowns and acrobats. Others, like the absolutely bonkers Cat Theatre , only feature one species of actor. Both kinds are memorable for their quintessentially Russian madness.

Pillow Talk

For budget travellers, there are plenty of hostels, such as Napoleon and Godzillas . They can be a little gritty, though they tend to be wonderfully located and mostly clean and welcoming.

If you can afford it, the Hotel Metropol is probably the closest you’ll get to feeling like a Tsar. Situated next door to the Bolshoi Theatre, it is a grand, Liberty-style building that has to be seen to be believed.

Another historical luxury hotel is the Ritz-Carlton – equally stunning.

Homestays are also catching on, and the majority of hosts speak good English and will go out of their way to help you have a good stay. Prices are similar to those of mid-range hotels ( Izmailovo Delta , or Katerina City ) due to rent in Moscow being astronomical.

Avoid the below-average Italian, Japanese, and French chain restaurants, and head straight for the mouth-watering Russian, Central Asian and Caucasian specialties. Mari Vanna has excellent, fresh and traditionally Russian food.

Alternatively, the ubiquitous chain Elki Palki offers a vast choice and great value. GUM’s Stolovaya n. 7, situated at the top of the shopping centre on Red Square, has been refurbished but preserved as the popular Soviet proletarian canteen it used to be. Jolly Kazakh chefs hand Central Asian shashlik – skewers – out on paper plates, covered in onions and spice, at their stalls in the huge souvenir market Izmailovo.

Moscow restaurants and eating out

And do not leave Moscow without having tried the exceptional Georgian cuisine: cheese bread (khachapuri) goes with tasty dips and sauces, then wash down the gigantic meat dumplings, khinkali, with some sweet Georgian wine. (Try Khachapuri , Vai Me! , and Batoni .)

A note of merit goes to one of the world’s few North Korean restaurants ; this one, situated in the south of Moscow, offers Pyongyang specialties in an unintentionally retro setting. It’s hidden away at the back of a petrol station, but worth spending a while looking for – it really has to be seen to be believed.

Muscovite nightlife ranges from unassuming, cheap bars to oligarch-filled glitzy nightclubs. The latter are almost inaccessible thanks to the infamous “face control” (door policy), but speak English to the bouncer and he might let you in.

Try Rolling Stone or Gipsy for a glimpse of Moscow’s gilded youth, or Solyanka for a hipster, artsy vibe. Otherwise, Gogol’, Kamchatka and Proekt O.G.I. are the go-to places for affordable, unfailingly fun nights with live music. They’re filled with locals who are almost guaranteed to become your best friends after several large vodkas (or, in the case of Proekt O.G.I., several five-litre teapots of beer); don’t blame us if at 7am you’re still dancing in the sweaty and legendary techno club Propaganda .

Getting There

EasyJet are now offering cheap flights from London to Moscow, making a weekend break possible for UK residents. And, if booked in advance, British Airways also offer decently priced return flights from Heathrow and other parts of the UK. Aeroflot and United Airlines fly straight to Moscow from the US, but prices can be steep.

Be sure to check which of Moscow’s three airports you’re flying into when planning your journey into the city centre, and if you want to catch a ride get in contact with Book Taxi Moscow who will meet you at arrivals.

Travelling to Moscow by train across Europe is possible but expensive; sleeper trains run regularly from most major cities in Germany, with the Berlin-Moscow journey lasting about a day.

Do remember you need a visa to visit. If you’re willing to pay extra best to get an agency to sort this out, unless you fancy queuing up at the Russian Embassy at 8am for an appointment with their wilfully unhelpful staff.

Once you’re in town getting around is cheap and easy thanks to probably the best metro system in the world… every station is a work of art.

Time Out Moscow and Afisha are comprehensive free publications with listings, events and addresses that can be found around the city, but they’re only in Russian. The Moscow Times – look for it at the airport, in expat cafés, and in hotel lobbies – is a free English-language daily newspaper with full events listings; their website is constantly updated, too.

Tolstoy’s War and Peace depicts the aristocratic Moscow of the Russian Empire. Bulgakov’s Master and Margarita paints an otherworldly picture of the capital during the Stalin years, whilst satirising the regime. Today, Boris Akunin’s detective stories are hugely popular both in Russia and abroad, and are more often than not set in a long-gone, mysterious Moscow (try She Lover of Death and The State Counsellor ). The thrillers Gorky Park and Snowdrops are full of Western cliches about Russia but great fun… best to read them once you come back though or you might not go. For practical non-fiction travel info, including the much needed advice on how to deal with the bureaucracy of obtaining a visa, check Rough Guides.

Silver Screen

Moscow Doesn’t Believe In Tears won an Oscar in 1980 and is a lot more fun than the title suggests. It is rumoured that US President Ronald Reagan watched it several times in an attempt to understand the “Russian soul”. The Cranes Are Flying (1957) tells the heartbreaking story of Muscovite couple torn apart by war. The 1997 crime film Brat is partly set in Moscow and is a crude depiction of life in Russia after the fall of the USSR. For something more modern the “urban fantasy supernatural thriller” Night Watch from 2004 is a stunning and captivating piece of cinema, comparable in style and brilliance to The Matrix .

Soundtrack to the City

Bravo – Etot Gorod (This City) Muslim Magomaev – Luchshi Gorod Zemli (The Best City In The World) The Beatles – Back in the USSR Kombinatsya – Russian Girls Michael Jackson – Stranger in Moscow

Great post! I had the chance to visit Moscow just a few weeks ago and I absolutely loved it! This city has some much to offer. Unfortunately, I didn´t have time to visit the VDNKH, it looks so interesting!

Stories behind Moscow's historic Soviet-era hotels

Soviet authorities built grand hotels and edifices to duly impress visiting foreign delegations, but in the process tore down entire blocks, drained swamps and built new bridges. Not only did the new hotels change the city's skyline, they also made a notable contribution to urban folklore, soon becoming the centre of everyone's attention and hot topics of conversation.

Some hotels were lodged in neo-classical Stalinist high-rises (Leningradskaya and Ukraina), while others were constructed using original designs in the Stalinist Empire style (Moskva and Pekin ). Yet another group of hotels was installed in pre-revolutionary buildings that had undergone complete renovation. An example from this is the  Sovetskaya Hotel , which inherited the quarters of  Yar, one of Moscow’s largest 19th-century restaurants .

urban travellers hotel

Built in the late 1930s on  Manezhnaya Square  directly in front of the pre-revolutionary Hotel National and the Hotel Metropol, the Moskva was the first major Soviet hotel. The original building has been lost as it was demolished in the early 2000s. It was later replaced by an exact replica, which now houses the  Four Season Hotel, Moscow .

During the course of reconstruction, a decision was made to retain the difference between the two halves of the facade.

The Ukraina Hotel, located on the  west bank of the Moskva River , opposite the government headquarters (commonly referred to as the "White House"), dates back to the 1950s. For quite a while it ranked among Europe's tallest hotels; its height including the spire is 206 metres. This historic building is today occupied by the  Radisson Royal Hotel .

The hotel was the seventh and last of Moscow's Seven Sisters skyscrapers. Since its construction began only after Stalin's death, its fate was determined by the next Soviet leader, Nikita Khrushchev. Along with his denunciation of Stalin's personality cult, Khrushchev is also famous for his innovative approach to housing shortages in the Soviet Union.

Another legend involves the diorama "Moscow, Capital of the USSR," on display on the first floor. The 300-metre maquette of the Russian capital was built in 1977 and placed on display in New York. The miniature Moscow was a huge success in the U.S. with 30 to 40 visitors attending the exposition every day. Rumour has it that the astronaut Neil Armstrong asked the Soviet government to sell the impressive exhibit to him, only to receive the terse reply: "Moscow is not for sale."

urban travellers hotel

Leningradskaya was built in 1949–1952 not far from  Komsomolskaya, or Three Station, Square . It is the shortest of the Seven Sisters skyscrapers – a modest 134 meters including the spire. Today the building is home to the  Hilton Moscow Leningradskaya .

The foot of the stairs is guarded by bronze mythical beasts that resemble lionesses. A legend proposes that these statues were brought here by Soviet soldiers from Berlin's Reichstag after World War II. The hotel staff even refers to them as "trophies." The entrance hall of the hotel is open to visitors and guided tours.

Excellent location, wonderful staff

Nazareth Families - 4/29/2024 Confirmed reviews ALL

The hotel was very well located, just off the popular Arbat Street, right next to a metro station. The rooms were very comfortable and there was a constant supply of cold drinking water in the corridor, which is important to me. I made use of the gym, which was a bit small, but good enough. Breakfast was great. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, making our stay very pleasant. Thank you!

New Moscow City training program to boost business travel from India

T3 News Network

India consistently emerges as one of the leading nations in terms of tourist influx to Moscow, with business travel being a key driver for Indian visitors. In 2023, Moscow welcomed 3.7 million business travellers, marking a 7% increase from the previous year.

The Moscow City Tourism Committee has announced the launch of a new training program aimed at boosting business travel from India. This initiative is a part of Moscow MICE Ambassadors online certification project to strengthen ties between Moscow and India and to promote the Russian capital as a premier host city for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) events.

Scheduled to unfold from June 3 to November 1, 2024, this online project promises to be a transformative experience for all participants. Representatives from India’s MICE industry can register for the program via the RUSSPASS portal.

The Moscow MICE Ambassadors pilot course, initiated last year in partnership with the Indian MICE Agents Association (NIMA), saw 50 members receiving the inaugural certificates. Building on this success, the program is poised to bestow certification upon 200 professionals from India’s MICE industry this year.

“The Moscow MICE Ambassadors program is focused on India as it is our priority region. Our objective extends beyond simply boosting the influx of business travellers from India to Moscow; we aim to elevate the standard of services we provide and effectively exhibit our capabilities. To achieve this, we acquaint Indian MICE experts with the nuances of organising corporate events in Moscow and offer support in customising business agendas to suit the Indian market,” said Evgeny Kozlov, Chairman of The Moscow City Tourism.

“Our training modules are designed with a long-term perspective in mind. I am confident that all MICE specialists who will receive certificates this year and, in the years, to come, will be able to create business programs in Moscow that meet the needs of even the most demanding of clients,” Kozlov added.

This year, the program has been refined to include practical information on planning and organising events in Moscow, offering tips tailored to Indian corporate clients. Participants will learn about key business districts, conference facilities, accommodation options, transportation services, and networking opportunities in Moscow. They will also gain firsthand insights into The Moscow City Tourism Committee’s exciting plans and receive insider tips to help promote Moscow and assist in the bidding process for MICE events.

The certification program for Moscow MICE Ambassadors consists of five in-depth modules designed to introduce participants systematically to the city’s MICE potential, highlighting its unique cultural beauty, centuries-old history, and rich architectural heritage. Each module comprises a video lecture and downloadable resources for self-study, providing valuable tools for participants’ future undertakings. Upon successful completion of all modules and assessments, participants will receive the Moscow MICE Ambassador certificate, showcasing their proficiency in the program.

India consistently emerges as one of the leading nations in terms of tourist influx to Moscow, with business travel being a key driver for Indian visitors. In 2023, Moscow welcomed 3.7 million business travelers, marking a 7% increase from the previous year.

In April 2024, the Moscow City Tourism Committee organised the Shaping MICE Future conference in Delhi, bringing together over 100 representatives from the MICE industry in India and Moscow. The event featured panel discussions and thematic sessions, offering Indian MICE stakeholders’ insights into the benefits of organising business events in Moscow and opportunities for effective cooperation.

Six Senses Just Opened a New Urban Retreat in Kyoto — Here’s What It’s Like to Stay

The slumber-supporting rooms, foliage-studded courtyards, and sanctuary spa are a masterclass in Zen.

Lindsay Cohn is a writer, editor, and avid traveler who has visited 45 countries across six continents — and counting. She contributes to Travel + Leisure, Hotels Above Par, InsideHook, Well+Good, The Zoe Report, and more.

urban travellers hotel

Food and Drink

Activities and amenities, family-friendly offerings, accessibility and sustainability, how to get the most value out of your stay.

Courtesy of Six Senses Kyoto

Well-known for its heritage and culture, Kyoto brims with Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples, and well-preserved districts. Despite its deep roots and proliferation of historic landmarks, the ancient Edo capital has indeed evolved since its imperial heyday. The current cultural framework looks different than it did even a few decades back. Today, Instagrammable matcha shops sit astride kaiseki restaurants and artisan studios specializing in kintsugi, and soft serve joints line the main street of Arashiyama.

Situated in the Higashiyama Ward, the new Six Senses Kyoto, which opened its doors in late April 2024, blends past and present in the most exquisite way — honoring its historical surroundings, rolling out industry-leading sustainability initiatives, and creating a serene sanctuary for guests to unwind after temple hopping (or skipping the sightseeing and just blissing out all day).

Inspired by the Heian period — the golden age of art and culture in Kyoto — but designed by Singapore-based BLINK Design Group with a more contemporary, eco-conscious lens, the hotel epitomizes a Zen urban retreat. It’s luxurious yet relaxed and modern, with nods to millennia-old traditions that give it a rich sense of place and soul.

Guests are welcomed with tea, Japanese sweets (determined by the current micro-season), and Zuko (rubbing incense powder), a purifying Buddhist ritual meant to cleanse the spirit and set the tone for a halcyon stay. The five-star property doesn’t demand silence or formality despite the palpable sense of tranquility. The doting staff is warm and always smiling. And there's an undercurrent of levity and whimsy.

Stunning in its simplicity and attention to detail, the biophilic lobby — which opens onto a central courtyard teeming with greenery, water, and rocks  — features stone floors, light wood, and custom artwork. Hanging behind the reception desks, a folding screen made of local Rakuyaki tiles evokes the silhouette of the sacred Mount Kurama, the birthplace of Reiki healing. On the opposite wall, a modern interpretation of scrolls of frolicking animals nods to the first manga.

Folksy fox masks guard each of the 81 luxurious rooms — and cleverly light up to indicate a do-not-disturb preference. Sounds of joy reverberate from the Grow With Six Senses kids club. The restaurants serve fresh, locally sourced cuisine that resonates with applaudable sustainability efforts. The Earth Lab allows guests to connect to local culture, learn, and get creative. Nowhere is the balance of pampering and peacefulness more apparent than the spa, a sanctum of holistic self-care capable of transforming even the most tightly wound traveler into a Zen master.

Here, everything you need to know about Six Senses Kyoto.

Six Senses Kyoto

  • Sustainability is more than just a buzzword; it’s part of the DNA of the hotel.
  • The cutting-edge spa has a watsu pool, biohacking recovery lounge, heated pools, saunas, steam rooms, and an Alchemy Bar.
  • Guests can participate in immersive cultural activities like incense making at the Earth Lab.
  • Bartenders mix cocktails with Japanese whisky and creative mocktails at the emerald-hued jewel box bar.

Every room is consciously designed for comfort and style. All the accommodations overlook nature and have soaking tubs, enhancing the relaxing vibe. One detail I loved is that beautiful panels hide televisions, so you get a tech-free feeling without sacrificing Netflix to beat the jetlag. This aligns with the brand’s portfolio-wide mission to promote a better snooze, as do the bespoke mattresses, temperature-regulating pillows, and organic cotton linens.

Like the rest of the property, peppered throughout the rooms are moments of surprise and delight, such as wooden blocks that spin behind the beds. Care and attention go into every carefully considered detail — even the snacks. The house-made lemon cookies, beet soy sauce crackers, and sweet potato chips hit the spot when you’re feeling peckish.

We stayed in a Premier Suite Garden on the ground floor, a spectacular space with a private Japanese garden for sitting in stillness or napping on the outdoor couch. I will be dreaming of the stand-alone soaking tub for years to come.

Ideal for multi-general families or groups, the Penthouse Suite flaunts three bedrooms (a rarity for a city hotel) and expansive living areas with sweeping views.

Calling the cuisine farm-to-table doesn’t do it justice: The food here is hyperlocal, with virtually everything either grown on-site or sourced from regenerative farms and fisheries within a six-mile radius.

A celebration of the 24 micro-seasons of the ancient Japanese calendar, Sekki, the all-day restaurant helmed by executive chef and Kyoto native Hiroki Shishikura, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The bountiful morning buffet is full of pickled vegetables, fresh-baked pastries, housemade granola and yogurt, and fruit. Guests can also order a la carte dishes. I recommend the dashi maki tamago , a Kyoto-style take on an omelet, and the roasted sweet potato. To wash it down? Pressed juices and zesty shots. In the evening, miso-marinaded Tamba pork and Kyoto wagyu are meaty standouts from the land section of the menu. Veg-forward options include roasted cauliflower with a vinegared leek and turnip tapenade and stir-fried greens from the garden. Seafood fans will happily dive into a plate of scallops with homegrown Manganji peppers and enoki mushrooms. The adjacent café is the spot for coffee, tea, housemade kombucha, and freshly baked pastries during the day.

The second location of the acclaimed, Osaka-based Sushi Oga allows patrons to try an omakase (chef’s choice) of flawlessly cut fish that sits elegantly atop signature red vinegar sushi rice.

In contrast to the rest of the light and airy property, the Nine Tails bar is undoubtedly a visual departure. Jewel tones and dim lighting create a seductive atmosphere for grown-up guests to sip Japanese whisky, creative cocktails, and mocktails.

A chalkboard sign in the lobby details the daily activities, which range from yoga and mat Pilates to sound healing and sustainability tours to origami and Sashiko stitching.

One of the most interesting spaces at the hotel, the Earth Lab, invites guests to partake in interactive cultural workshops — including learning the time-honored Japanese art of Shodo calligraphy and zero-waste furoshiki wrapping.

Complimentary wooden Coco-Mat bicycles are waiting out front for guests keen to explore the neighborhood.

The spa is, without a doubt, the star of a property with so many high points. The bathhouses, separated by gender, call to mind traditional onsen rituals. I spent an hour sweating it out in the sauna and steam room, floating in the hot pools, and cooling off in the cold plunge before my holistic massage.

On the cutting-edge side of things, diagnostic health screening machines give guests data about sleep and stress in minutes. Experts then use the analysis to recommend tailor-made programs. The tech-forward biohacking lounge, equipped with vibration therapy chairs and LED masks, is excellent for a quick wellness hit to combat jetlag and promote recovery or, as most spa-goers do, as an addition to lengthier, bespoke journeys that might comprise shiatsu, a 24k gold facial, a pearl-infused body mask, and acupuncture. There’s also a watsu (aquatic bodywork) pool — the only one in Kyoto. The treatment rooms are impeccably designed and perfectly serene. After rituals, the relaxation room encourages guests to sip tea and move the rake around the miniature Zen sand gardens.

The Alchemy Bar, a hallmark across the portfolio, offers guests the chance to craft DIY beauty products with ingredients plucked from the hotel’s garden. Who wouldn’t want to bring home an exfoliating green tea body scrub? The boutique stocks luxury all-natural skincare lines, handwoven kimonos, and incense from Tenkhodou, a family-run business dating back four generations that supplies ceremonial aromatics to the most sacred temples in Kyoto.

Finding a hotel that feels so polished and peaceful yet caters to families is rare. The way that the property considers its youngest guests impressed me tremendously. Everyone was so sweet and thoughtful to our boys, chatting up Miles about his day and latest drawing and playing peek-a-boo with Leo.

The kids club, called Grow with Six Senses, is on the ground floor and open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Clearly, a parent had a say in things because it’s right down the hall from Nine Tails and Sekki and open late enough for mom and dad to enjoy drinks and dinner with a side of adult conversation. The room itself looks like one of those brilliantly designed playrooms you see on Instagram, but don’t imagine anyone having it in real life. Think wooden toys, books, puzzles galore, yoga mats, and this beautiful butterfly tree sculpture to spur imagination.

Perhaps the most magical element is an interactive play area with a slide and boulder-shaped pillows that mirror the green spaces outside the window. For kids ages 5 to 12, it’s a drop-off situation (hence the suggestion for a date night), but a parent or guardian must accompany younger children. Still — we brought our 3-year-old, and he had the time of his life.

The hotel is designed and built in compliance with local accessibility standards, with one accessible room available.

Sustainability is a driving force behind the Six Senses brand — especially true of its Kyoto outpost. Conceptualized with a profound respect for people and the planet, nearly every aspect of the LEED silver-certified hotel — from the materials and practices used in the construction process to implementing plastic-free policies and to the guest experiences — reflects values of social and environmental responsibility. Visitors can participate in eco-conscious activities like painting Sensu (folding fans) with natural pigments colored by food scraps at the Earth Lab. Kitchen waste is also composted and used as fertilizers for the garden. Part of the hotel’s revenue directly funds forestry conservation and education.

The Higashiyama Ward provides a more relaxing, residential-feeling alternative to the city center. Its narrow lanes are dotted with tea houses, kaiseki restaurants, and pottery shops like POJ Studio . Sanjusangen-do Temple and the Kyoto National Museum are within walking distance of the Six Senses Kyoto. And it’s easy to hop in a car to visit the many other must-see attractions.

Cherry blossom season draws travelers worldwide, which rolls into Golden Week in early May. Book outside this period if you’re looking for fewer crowds and more wallet-friendly rates.

The Six Senses Kyoto is part of IHG’s luxury and lifestyle portfolio. That comes with the perks of the IHG One Rewards loyalty program.
