How to Travel From Narita Airport to Tokyo by Train, Bus, and Car

travel from narita airport to tokyo

Narita International Airport , also called Tokyo Narita Airport, is located in Chiba Prefecture, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) away from central Tokyo . Seeing more than 30 million passengers per year, this travel hub is the main entry point into Japan's capital city. The airport offers direct bus service to some of the country's most popular destinations, as well as express train service to the city's major stations. If you're not a fan of public transportation, you can also climb into a taxi, but it'll cost you nearly $200.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From Narita International Airport to Tokyo?

The cheapest way to get from the airport to central Tokyo is by bus. The TYO-NRT Airport Bus and Narita Shuttle —operated by Willer—both depart from the North and South Terminals between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. One-way tickets cost about $12 a piece and must be purchased at ticket counters at the airport. The TYO-NRT goes to Tokyo Station and the Narita Shuttle goes to Osaki Station about 5 miles (8 kilometers) away, so plan accordingly. Either way, the trip takes about one hour.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From Narita International Airport to Tokyo?

The quickest way to get to central Tokyo from the airport is to jump on the Keisei Skyliner , a high-speed train that connects to the city at 99 miles (160 kilometers) per hour. It takes only 36 minutes to get to Nippori Station in Arakawa and costs $23 per one-way ticket. From Nippori Station, you can board another train to Tokyo Station or any other destination on the Loop Line. The Keisei Skyliner departs from the North Wing every 20 to 40 minutes. Alternatively, there's the JR train , departing every 30 to 60 minutes from the South Wing, which takes an hour to get into the city and costs about $28.

How Long Does It Take to Drive?

The drive between Narita International Airport and Tokyo is usually time-consuming because of the traffic. It takes roughly an hour, in average conditions, to drive to the center and you can go ahead and forget about parking. Those who are considering taking a taxi should beware of the lofty cost. You'd be lucky to get into town for under $180 by cab. The train may not be as comfortable, but it's much faster and more economical.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to Tokyo?

Tokyo's temperate climate makes it a tourist-popular destination year-round. However, those hoping to avoid major crowds and inflated prices may want to travel outside of the busy summer season. Spring and fall are quieter and less humid, too. When booking your travel from the airport to the city, keep rush hour traffic in mind. Taxis can get backed up during peak hours and trains and buses are bound to be more crowded. Buses and trains don't normally run through the night, either.

What Is There to Do in Tokyo?

As the country's capital, Tokyo puts the best of Japanese food , history, and culture on display. Some come to revel in the Times Square-style florescent lights and some come just for the world-celebrated sushi. The city itself is an endless stream of entertainment, making it possible to have an action-packed day of exploration just by following the one neon-lit street to the next on foot. But to see the hustle and bustle from above, head up to the observation deck at Tokyo Skytree , a 2,080-foot (634-meter) tower that overlooks it all. The cloud-kissing spire is actually the tallest building in Japan.

No visitor should leave Tokyo without paying a visit to Sensō-ji, the city's oldest temple, and the Meiji Shrine. When you need a break from the busy pace, escape to the spacious, cherry blossom-dotted Ueno Park or the ever-colorful Shinjuku Gyoen National Gardens. After dark, find yourself drinking lagers with the locals down some undiscovered Izakaya alley.

The airport is 40 miles (67 kilometers) away from Tokyo.

The cost of a taxi from the airport depends both on what area of the city you're going to and if you use Keiyo Road or Bayshore Freeway. Prices range from 18,000 yen to 32,500 yen ($167 to $300).

If you take the Keisei Skyliner, one-way tickets start at 2,500 yen (about $23). If you take the JR train, one-way tickets start at 3,000 yen ($28).

Finding the Best Transport From Narita Airport to Tokyo

As surprising as it may seem, Narita Airport (NRT) — Tokyo’s main international gateway — is not close to Tokyo at all. So getting from Narita Airport to Tokyo is a bit of a trek.

In fact, this Tokyo airport is so rural and remote that on the journey into Tokyo you’ll see rice paddies long before neon lights. In more practical terms, you’re looking at a distance of about 80 km (50 miles) from Narita Airport to Shibuya Crossing .

Overview: Getting from Narita to Tokyo

Since Tokyo is so huge, there’s no “one-size-fits-all” answer as to which method or route is cheapest/best for getting from Narita to your accommodation in Tokyo .

If you’ve picked out a hotel in a central neighborhood, like Shinjuku, Roppongi, or Shibuya, you’re in luck — we’ve made individual mini-guides for how to get to each one from Narita Airport. These guides cover the fastest, cheapest, and easiest transport options, and you can find links for all of them below. For other locations, don’t go anywhere — right here we’ve put together some more general information, to help you work out the best option.

If you don’t mind spending a little extra, we suggest the simple option of a shared taxi service . This costs around ¥ 7,000 per person (two-person minimum booking). Also worth a mention is the speedy Keisei Skyliner train: normally tickets would set you back ¥ 2,570 , but you can buy them online for the discounted price of ¥ 2,310 .

Quick comparison of Narita to central Tokyo transport options

Note: All details above were calculated on travel to Tokyo Station. Exact fares, times, and transfers will vary depending on your destination.

Narita: The LCC airport of choice

While finding the cheapest transport between Narita and Tokyo is a worthy quest in itself, it has become more important because of the arrival of low-cost carriers . Many of them use Narita Airport as their base of operations for domestic flights out of Tokyo.

Some of the fares are cheap enough to make tourists coming to Japan consider whether they should get a Japan Rail Pass or just book a couple of flights on an LCC. However, since Narita Airport is not actually in Tokyo (unlike the much more conveniently located and modern Haneda Airport ), transport fees to and from Tokyo should be factored into your overall costs.

Note: There is no train station at Narita Terminal 3, where most LCCs arrive and depart. Instead, you’ll need to use the train station at Terminal 2 (about a 15-minute walk). Buses and taxis do depart directly from Terminal 3, though.

Express trains from Narita Airport

Two operators run express trains from Narita Airport to central Tokyo: Keisei (the Skyliner) and JR (the Narita Express, or N’EX).

Keisei Skyliner

From ¥ 2,310 (if you buy a discounted Skyliner ticket on Headout ) 1 hr to Tokyo Station

Keisei Skyliner Express from Narita to Tokyo

The snazzy Skyliner offers the speediest travel time — just 36 minutes to Nippori Station or 41 minutes to Ueno Station. From Nippori, you can transfer to the JR Yamanote line for onward travel; from Ueno you can transfer to the JR Yamanote line and also the Hibiya and Ginza subway lines. The Skyliner service runs between 7:30 a.m. and 11 p.m, with one to three departures every hour. On weekends, the timetable changes slightly, but the number of departures is the same.

One of the best things about the Skyliner is the train itself. It’s a dedicated airport service — meaning that you don’t have to compete with daily commuters for seats. Reservations are required, so you’re guaranteed somewhere to sit. The Skyliner’s seats are incredibly comfortable, and each has its own charging port. There’s separate luggage storage space, and free WiFi.

For more details, check out our dedicated guide to taking Keisei trains . We cover the Skyliner along with regular Keisei trains (more on those below) from Narita to Tokyo — it’s chock-full of useful info and discount hacks.

  • Narita Express

¥ 3,070 53 mins to Tokyo station

narita to tokyo train - the narita express

The Narita Express is a trouble-free way of getting to the main JR stations in Tokyo, especially on the west side of town. All N’EX trains go to Tokyo Station (53 minutes). Some continue on to Shibuya, Shinjuku, or stations even further afield — no transfer required. All seats are reserved and, like the Skyliner, there is free WiFi and ample luggage storage.

Three to five N’EX trains depart from Narita Airport Terminal 1 Station each hour, between 6:52 a.m. and 11:42 p.m; all trains also stop at Narita Airport Terminal 2. Check the timetable carefully to make sure that the service stops at your station — while all services stop at Tokyo Station, not all will stop at Shinjuku Station, for example.

N’EX tickets aren’t cheap: It costs ¥ 3,070 to Tokyo Station, one way. However, round-trip tickets are discounted. You can buy tickets at the JR stations and travel centers at Narita Airport. You could use a JR Pass (see below) to ride the N’EX; however, we only recomend this if you plan on traveling beyond Tokyo (e.g. to Kyoto or Osaka ) the same day or the day after.

Read our full guide to taking the JR Narita Express here.

N’EX Tokyo Round-Trip ticket

The N’EX Tokyo Round-Trip ticket gives you round-trip travel from Narita to Tokyo and back for  ¥ 5,000 for adults (and ¥ 2,500 for children). It’s only available at Narita Airport to foreign passport holders. The cool thing for residents is that you don’t need a tourist visa.

Regular trains from Narita to Tokyo

If you don’t have much luggage or don’t mind carting it around, it may interest you to know that the cheapest regular trains that run the route between central Tokyo and Narita Airport are on the Keisei Line .

A good thing about the Keisei Line is that some services connect directly with the Toei Asakusa subway line; other services terminate at stations on the JR Yamanote Line (Tokyo’s central loop line). So it’s pretty convenient for a lot of different stations in central Tokyo. The bad news, however, is that it’s a regular train — so catching it with your suitcase during rush hour may be hazardous to your health! The journey takes between 80 and 120 minutes, depending on where you’re heading.

Pro tip: To help you on your visit, we’ve put together a comprehensive guide to taking Keisei trains from Narita to Tokyo.

regular keisei train

Keisei Limited Express: The cheapest train from Narita to Tokyo

Here’s a summary of the route and cost from Narita Airport on the Keisei Limited Express, to some of the main stations in Tokyo:

If you want to take one of these cheapo options, just go to the Keisei train ticket counter at Narita Airport, and ask for a ticket to your destination — but explicitly say not on the Skyliner .

If you’re planning on spending a few days in Tokyo, ask for a Suica card — this is a top-up IC card usable on all trains, buses, etc. in the Tokyo area.

As these Keisei trains are regular services, without reserved seating, you don’t need to worry about purchasing a special ticket — you can just use a topped-up Suica or Pasmo to pass through the ticket gates and board.

Keisei Sky Access Express

Keisei has another useful regular train service: the Sky Access Express (not to be confused with the Skyliner). This service connects directly with the Toei Asakusa subway line (rather than terminating at Nippori or Ueno stations). You can travel directly to destinations including: Asakusa (60 mins), Nihonbashi (65 mins), and Shinbashi (70 mins), faster than you could on the Keisei Limited Express.

The total travel cost to destinations on the Toei Asakusa line is about ¥ 200 more than using the Keisei Limited Express routes outlined above; so, for example, the trip from Narita to Asakusa will cost you ¥ 1,370 .

In our opinion, the extra couple hundred yen is worth it. But for maximum comfort and convenience, the Skyliner is still your best bet. Again, we recommend looking at our dedicated guide to taking Keisei trains (Limited Express, Sky Access Express, and Skyliner) from Narita to Tokyo — it’s stuffed full of useful info and discount hacks.

Buses from Narita to Tokyo

There are a few different buses running from Narita to Tokyo and back.

travel from narita airport to tokyo

Narita Airport Limousine Bus

From ¥ 3,600 90 to 120 minutes (depending on traffic)

The convenience of not having to cart your luggage around is great, but the Airport Limousine Bus service is not the cheapest option. Also, while comfortable, the buses are, in fact, not very limousine-like. They are simply coaches (with comfier seats and WiFi) that run to major hotels and stations in the Greater Tokyo area for ¥ 3,600 one-way.

You get space for one large (30 kg each) suitcase per passenger. If the bus isn’t full, you might be able to get away with an extra bag, but to be safe, we recommend sending additional luggage to your accommodation, from the airport .

You can book Airport Limousine Bus tickets online in advance. Return tickets (valid for 14 days) are also available for the discounted price of ¥ 6,000 .

You can also buy tickets from the bus counters and ticket machines in the airport arrivals hall, on the day.

Low Cost Airport Bus

¥ 1,300 About 65 minutes

The inside of a bus with empty pairs of seats on both sides.

Note: As of February 2024, the Low Cost Airport Bus — also known as the Airport Bus Tokyo-Narita (TYO-NRT) — still can’t be booked in advance. You need to buy your ticket on the day.

A couple of years ago, two popular budget coach services — the Tokyo Shuttle and Access Narita — were merged into one service: Airport Bus Tokyo-Narita (TYO-NRT) . This is also known as the Low Cost Airport Bus.

Regular daytime tickets cost ¥ 1,300 for adults and ¥ 650 for kids, and stops include Tokyo Station (Yaesu exit), Ginza Station, and Shinonome.

Note that luggage restrictions are a little stricter on the budget coaches: typically just one suitcase (158 cm) per traveler.

Narita Airport Shuttle bus

¥ 1,700 (early-bird discount) About 80 minutes

The cheapest bus to the west side of town is the Narita Airport Shuttle bus , operated by a company called Willer. This bus runs between Narita Airport and Tokyo, dropping you off at Ikebukuro Station. The journey takes 80 minutes and costs ¥ 1,900 — but if you book online at least 24 hours in advance, you can get the earlybird price of ¥ 1,700 . At Ikebukuro Station, you have access to JR, Tokyo Metro, Seibu, and Tobu lines.

There are currently only 10 Narita Airport Shuttle bus departures per day, between 9:20 a.m. and 10:20 p.m. You’re allowed to load one suitcase in the trunk of the bus, but take note: while there are no size specifications, it’s a first-come-first-serve situation. If you arrive too late, you might not be able to fit your bag in the trunk. Oversized baggage like snowboards and golf bags will only be allowed if there is space.

Buses from Narita Airport to destinations outside Tokyo

Taxis from narita airport to tokyo.

From ¥ 26,400 per vehicle (non-toll roads) 90 minutes

narita taxi

Taking a regular taxi (or Uber) from Narita Airport to central Tokyo is expensive. It only makes sense if you are traveling in a group, or in a real pinch. Also keep in mind that the above price and duration is for non-toll roads during the day. Toll roads will get you where you need to go quicker, to Tokyo Station in 1 hour in this example, but it also cost you more — around ¥ 29,250 total. And of course, don’t forget the additional 20% surchage between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Recommended: Shared pre-booked taxi

About ¥ 7,000 per person (two-person minimum) 1 hour

A nice, personal service and direct to your hotel, a shared minibus/taxi service hits the sweet spot between budget and convenience. For about ¥ 7,000 per person, you get frictionless transport from the airport to your accommodation. However, keep in mind that luggage space can be limited — one 61 cm tall suitcase per person — and large luggage items like snowboards can’t be accommodated.

For groups: Private pre-booked taxi

About ¥ 20,000 per vehicle 1 hour

A pre-booked private taxi could save a little money — and you get the reassurance of a car waiting for you upon arrival at the airport. Another bonus is that you can choose a larger vehicle for a small extra fee — which might be necessary if you have a party of more than three and luggage.

¥ 29,850 18 minutes

You can also charter a helicopter for ¥ 45,000 or so per person. Neither cheap nor sustainable, but certainly a unique airport transfer experience! It takes just 18 minutes from Narita to Tokyo by air. Book a Narita helicopter transfer .

1. Need to Get to Tokyo Fast? 36 Minutes by Train!

There are two rail lines that connect Narita Airport and Tokyo: the Keisai Skyliner on the Keisei Electric Railway, and JR East's Narita Express. These options are best for anyone who needs to prioritize speed. There are two train stations at Narita Airport, both located on the basement floor of the terminals. The station at Terminal 1 is called Narita Airport Station, while the station for Terminal 2 is called the Airport Terminal 2 Station.  There are a total of 3 terminals at Narita Airport, but if your flight is at the newer Terminal 3, where many low-cost international flights arrive, then the closest train station is the Airport Terminal 2 Station. It takes about 15 minutes on foot, or 5 minutes by shuttle bus to get to this station from Terminal 3, so be sure to factor that extra transit time into your travel plans.

Keisei Sky Liner (Keisei Electric Railway)

Keisei Sky Liner has a maximum 3 trains scheduled per hour. It takes 36 minutes from Narita Airport Airport Terminal 2 Station to Nippori Station in Tokyo, and 41 minutes to Ueno Station. A ticket costs 2,470 yen one-way to Nippori Station or Ueno Station.

You can change trains at Nippori Station to connect with other Tokyo and surrounding areas on the JR Yamanote Line, JR Keihin-Tohoku Line, and JR Joban Line. Change at Ueno Station to access other areas in Japan using the Tohoku, Joetsu, or Hokuriku bullet train lines, or transfer to the JR Yamanote, Keihin-Tohoku, Utsunomiya, Takasaki, and Joban lines, the Tokyo Metro Ginza and Hibiya lines, or the Oedo Line from Ueno-okachimachi Station. With all these options, you'll likely have no trouble getting to your accommodation. These trains are both very comfortable and well-designed, with spacious dome-shaped ceilings, chequered pattern floors, and power outlets at each seat. The fifth car also has a multipurpose toilet and washroom.

Narita Express N'EX (JR East)

JR East Narita Express (N'EX) departs approximately every 30 minutes. It reaches Tokyo Station in around 53 minutes (3,020 yen one-way), and also stops at major Tokyo stations like Shinagawa Station, Shibuya Station, and Shinjuku Station. If you're planning a return trip, the N'EX Tokyo Round Trip Ticket (4,000 yen) is great value. Narita Express also has trains that go as far as Yokohama Station, which is very convenient if you're looking for direct access to Yokohama.  These trains are also very comfortable thanks to the subdued chequer-patterned and wood-toned carriage interiors and reclining seats with adjustable headrests. Seats are also equipped with large flip-down tables and power outlets, which are great for anyone who wants to eat and work on their laptop or tablet during their trip. Both Keisei Sky Liner and Narita Express both have full safety measures such as security cameras equipped in the luggage storage areas in each carriage. Still, it's best to do what you can to keep your luggage safe from theft during your trip as well.

2. More Time Than Money? Get to Tokyo for 1,000 yen!

Cheap prices and frequent departure times have lead more and more international travellers to choose express buses in recent years. The two cheapest options from Narita Airport to Tokyo Station are the Tokyo Shuttle and THE Access Narita. Since you can also store your luggage under the bus, this is also one of the more hassle-free ways to get into Tokyo if you have heavy luggage to deal with.

Tokyo Shuttle

Tokyo Shuttle costs 1,000 yen one way (900 yen for advance bookings from Toyko Station, 2,000 yen for late night departures) from Narita Airport to Tokyo Station and the Ginza area. 113 buses depart each day (54 from Tokyo Station, 59 from Narita Airport), so there is one bus leaving around every 20 minutes during the day. You can book online in advance, and payments are accepted by credit card. For same-day bookings, you need to buy a ticket for a specific departure time at the Keisei Bus Ticket Counter.

Trip time: Around 60 minutes  Departures: 113 departures per day First Bus: 1:30 am - 2:40 am (Tokyo Station to Narita Airport) / 5:55 am - 7:12 am (Narita Airport to Tokyo Station) Last Bus: 9:00 pm - 10:10 pm (Tokyo Station to Narita Airport) / 11:10 pm - 12:27 am (Narita Airport to Tokyo Station)

THE Access Narita

Tickets between Narita Airport to the Tokyo Station and Ginza Station on THE Access Narita busses costs 1,000 yen (2,000 yen for late night fares) each way. 75 buses depart each day, with one leaving every 5 to 25 minutes. One interesting feature of this bus is that tickets are not required; you can simply board the bus and pay during your ride. However, those with advance bookings are given priority if the bus is full, so reserving your ticket will give you some peace of mind. You can book a seat up to a month in advance, and credit card payments are accepted.

Trip time: Around 65 minutes  Departures:  75 departures per day First Bus: 1:10 am - 2:25 am (Tokyo Station to Narita Airport) / 7:40 am - 9:05 am (Narita Airport to Tokyo Station) Last Bus:  6:10 pm - 7:25 pm (Tokyo Station to Narita Airport) / 11:00 pm - 12:05 am (Narita Airport to Tokyo Station)

Both Tokyo Shuttle and THE Access Narita have luggage racks above the seats and some storage at your feet as well. If you're travelling with bulky or heavy luggage, the ability to leave your luggage in the trunk of the bus might make this a more comfortable option than travelling by train. One downside is that traffic conditions can cause delays, so be sure to factor in some extra time for your trip just in case.

3. Get Straight to Where You're Going! Direct Access to Tokyo's Popular Spots

Keisei electric railway access express.

Catch Keisei Electric Railway's Access Express train to reach popular sightseeing areas in the city center from Narita Airport at a low price. You can access famous tourist spots like Oshiage Station, Asakusa Station, and Nihombashi Station with no transfers, and without having to pay an express train surcharge.

Taking Access Express gives you a lot of options. You can reach Oshiage Station in a minimum of 47 minutes (1,170 yen), which is the closest station to Tokyo Sky Tree, the highest tower in the world. You also can reach Nihombashi Station, which has a wealth of galleries and famous department stores like Mitsukoshi and Takashimaya, in a minimum of 59 minutes (1,330 yen).

Keisei Electric Railway also has an express train that you can use to travel affordably within Tokyo. This express takes the same route as Skyliner, and takes a minimum 66 minutes from Narita Airport to Nippori Station (1,030 yen) and a minimum of 70 minutes to Ueno Station (1,030 yen). Although it takes around 30 minutes longer than the Skyliner, you can save 1,000 yen or more on your ticket. So, if you have a little extra time and want to save some money, this express is a great choice. Three trains run per hour, which is another useful feature.

Airport Limousine Bus

The Airport Limousine Bus is a very convenient option if you are looking to get directly to a specific area. These buses cover almost all the major areas of Tokyo, like the Tokyo Station, Nihonbashi, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Roppongi, Akasaka, Hibiya, Ginza, Odaiba/Ariake, Ebisu/Shinagawa, Haneda Airport, Shibuya, Asakusa/Toyasu, and Kichijoji areas. The buses stop at train stations and major hotels in each area, making this a very fine-tuned service.

Airport Limousine buses also have routes that cover a wealth of sightseeing areas in Tokyo's surrounding areas like the Minato Mirai area in Yokohama and the Tokyo Disney Resort area. The ability to directly access areas other like Mt Fuji. Hakone, Nagano, Gifu, and Hida-Takayama is another key to the popularity of Airport Limousines. Ticket prices within Toyko are in around the 2,800 - 3,100 yen range.

It takes around 75 to 125 minutes to travel between Narita Airport and Tokyo Station. This is just an estimate, as traffic conditions can impact the trip time. You can check two pieces of luggage under 30kg within the dimensions of 50 x 60 x 120 cm, including bulky items like skis, golf bags, or fishing rods.

4. A Fixed-Price Taxi is Handy for Groups

A fixed-price taxi allows you to access Narita Airport and the Tokyo city center for a set fee. This is also a convenient option when you're travelling with a larger family group.

The below chart offers a guide to prices for each area.

If speed is your priority it's best to take an express train, while if you'd prefer to keep costs down, a bus is a good alternative. Narita Airport

How to get from Narita Airport into Tokyo city – with price and travel time

The best and cheapest options travelling to and from Tokyo's main airport in Chiba for international and domestic flights

Kaila Imada

Tokyo has two main airports: Narita and Haneda . While Haneda is more convenient due to its proximity to the city centre, many international flights and most discount airlines tend to be serviced out of   Narita Airport . The good news is that with recent additions such as a brand new   gourmet food court   to the Terminal 2 international departure zone, Narita is now even more enticing to fly out of.

Narita is located in Chiba prefecture, roughly 60 kilometres from central Tokyo, so you need to give yourself ample time to get to and from the airport. The most common and economical modes of transport are train or bus. Taking a taxi is possible, but it’ll cost you an arm and a leg for just a one-way journey (easily upwards of ¥20,000), so we really don’t recommend hailing a cab if you can avoid it.

When catching a flight from Narita, it’s a good idea to find out which terminal you are flying out of ahead of arrival. Narita Airport has three main terminals: Terminal 1 and 2 mainly service international flights while Terminal 3 operates domestic flights (though there are exceptions). Terminals 2 and 3 are fairly close together. Terminal 1, however, is not as easy to access – you’ll need to take a shuttle bus or train to get to this terminal from the other two.

To help you plan your journey, we’ve compiled a list of the seven best ways to travel between Tokyo and Narita Airport.

RECOMMENDED:   Useful travel tips   for visiting Tokyo

JR Narita Express (N’EX)

JR Narita Express (N’EX)

How much? From ¥3,070  How long does it take? Around one hour

The most straightforward and easy way to get to and from Narita Airport is on the Narita Express . The train stops at major stations including Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shibuya and Shinjuku as well as Yokohama and Ofuna.

If you’re an international tourist, you can take advantage of the Narita Express (N’EX) Round Trip Ticket , which costs just ¥5,000 and can be used within a two-week period. Better yet, the N’EX is covered by Japan Rail Pass, so you don’t need to buy tickets to board this train. N’EX seats are reserved, so you’re guaranteed a seat for your journey. The train also has a dedicated area where you can store your luggage (locks are provided).

JR Sobu Line Rapid Service

JR Sobu Line Rapid Service

How much? ¥1,340 How long does it take? Around an hour and a half

The JR Sobu Line Rapid Service train is the most affordable JR alternative to the Narita Express. It's also covered by the Japan Rail Pass. The line stops at a number of stations in the city as well as through Chiba, including Shin-Nihonbashi, Bakurocho, Kinshicho, Shin-Koiwa, Ichikawa and Funabashi stations.

This train is a good alternative if you are travelling to or from Yokohama and areas further south, as certain trains go all the way down to Yokosuka and even Zushi. Note that seat reservations are not available on these trains and there is no luggage space.

Keisei Skyliner

Keisei Skyliner

How much? From ¥2,570  How long does it take? Around 40 minutes

The Keisei Skyliner is the fastest route between Narita and Tokyo, as it can get you to Keisei-Ueno Station in 41 minutes and to Nippori Station in just 36 minutes. While there are only two direct access points within the city (Keisei-Ueno and Nippori stations), these are both major stations, so it's easy to connect to local trains including the JR Yamanote, Hibiya and Ginza lines.

Seats are reserved on the Skyliner, so you are guaranteed a place. There are also dedicated luggage storage on these trains.

Keisei Main Line Rapid Limited Express

Keisei Main Line Rapid Limited Express

How much? From ¥1,050  How long does it take? Around an hour and a half

The Keisei Main Line connects Narita Airport to Nippori and Keisei-Ueno stations. It’s a more affordable choice compared to the Keisei Skyliner, but there are no reserved seats, just benches because this is a regular commuter train.

If you want a comfortable ride, avoid this train during rush hour as it can get quite packed. There is also no dedicated luggage storage space, so you’ll have to hold or carry your luggage with you.

Keisei Access Express

Keisei Access Express

How much? From ¥1,240 How long does it take? Around an hour and 20 minutes

The Keisei Access Express is the slightly faster and more direct route run by Keisei Electric Railway. It runs along a similar route as the aforementioned Limited Express, but with fewer stops in between. Additionally, there is direct connection to other central Tokyo stations including Shinagawa, Shinbashi and Nihonbashi stations. The Access Express is a regular commuter train, so there is no reserved seating or luggage storage space.

Airport Limousine Bus

Airport Limousine Bus

How much? From ¥3,100 How long does it take? Around an hour and a half

The Airport Limousine Bus is a great option if you want to get on at or near your hotel, as it makes direct stops at many accommodations in major Tokyo districts including Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ginza and even Tokyo Disney Resort.

Rides can be booked and reserved ahead online , so you don’t have to worry about scrambling for a ticket when you first arrive at the airport or when leaving the city. Tickets can also be purchased at dedicated counters at all airport terminals. To see the full list of bus stops, visit the website .

Discount Airport Bus TYO-NRT

How much? ¥1,300 How long does it take? Around one hour

Narita Airport - How to get to Tokyo from Narita Airport

NAVITIME TRAVEL EDITOR

travel from narita airport to tokyo

The first and last things you do with any international travel is to make your way between the airport and the city. This is our guide for Narita Airport, but check out our Haneda Transport Guide if you're landing there. For the most accurate train timetables and costs, be sure to use the Transit Search function of this app.

【Choose the best option before you arrive】

Coming from Narita Airport

Narita is the main Tokyo airport, but you'll find that it's surprisingly far from the city center (and not actually in Tokyo either). Depending on where you're located and how you go the trip can take from 36 minutes to 2.5 hours! With a bit of planning you can save time, money, and hassle. For most people landing at Narita and going into central Tokyo there are two main modes of transport: Train and Limousine Bus. As always, there is a train to take you where you want to go, but for many people the Limousine Bus service can be a much easier journey.

■Transit Options

Average Cost

If you're a foreign passport holder you could be in luck! There are many good deals available to visitors, allowing you to save up to 50% on what would normally be an average 3,000 yen trip. Tickets for children under 12 are generally half price. The deals are always changing, so be sure to check online (links below) to see what's available.

Narita Express Train (N'EX)

For those getting off at major JR stations like Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shibuya, or Shinjuku (and others) the Narita Express can be a good option, getting you there in around 60-90 minutes. However, major stations can be quite chaotic so be prepared to walk with your bags through a lot of people. Normal prices are just over 3,000 yen, but if you purchased a Japan Rail Pass (and still have time left on it) you can ride for free. There is a JR Travel Center at the airport for redeeming your Japan Rail Pass, but if you're planning on spending a lot of time in Tokyo first we suggest saving the days for the bulk of your travel outside or between cities. In order to ride the Narita Express you will need to purchase a reserved seat at the counter or with a ticket machine, and we suggest also purchasing a Suica e-money card when you do.

travel from narita airport to tokyo

Keisei Skyliner

If you're going to Nippori or Ueno stations (or near them) you'll be able to make the trip on the Skyliner in a super-fast 36-41 minutes for about 2,200 yen. However, any other stations besides those two means that you will need to switch trains. The speed on the train is great, and there are some very nice views from the windows. The Skyliner is particularly useful for those staying in North or East Tokyo, and you'll need to purchase as reserved seat at the counter before boarding.

travel from narita airport to tokyo

Local Trains: Keisei Access Express

Staying in Oshiage, Asakusa, Nihombashi, or Higashi-Ginza? The Access Express is more like a local train (with bench seats) so it's less comfortable, but will get you there in 47-64 minutes at lower prices (around 980-1,400 yen). See the chart linked to below for more details, and keep in mind that this particular route cannot use credit cards. This train is especially good if you're staying in North or East Tokyo, or the business districts in the city center. No need to purchase a reserved seat, so it's best to buy an e-money card from the ticket machine and use that.

travel from narita airport to tokyo

Limousine Bus

While trains will get you to other train stations, the Limousine Bus service will often bring you much closer to your hotel, if not directly to the hotel entrance. For those who don't want to carry their bags much and have a hotel near one of the arrival points, this is the way to go. A one-way trip is usually around 3,100 yen, but there are often good deals available at Narita for purchasing round-trip tickets at a good discount. If you buy a round-trip ticket be sure to make sure to confirm at the ticket desk that a timely return trip is available from your area.

travel from narita airport to tokyo

Taxis and hired cars

Narita is FAR from downtown, so you could easily pay over 25,000 yen for a one-way trip into the city in a taxi, plus highway tolls. However, sometimes it makes sense depending on your situation, so it's best to book in advance with a service like Tokyo MK at fixed fares ranging from 16,000 to 22,000 yen, plus highway tolls (max 2,650 yen). Pickups from Narita can also incur placard fees around 3,000 yen.

travel from narita airport to tokyo

Renting a car at the airport makes your trip easy going by forgetting about your luggage after you store it in the trunk, and not caring about time tables of transportation. After stepping out from the arrival gate, go to the service counter and apply for your own car for your stay in Japan. Don’t forget to bring you passport and a valid international driving license. Nippon Rent-A-Car is available 24 hours so even if you arrive at the airport by a late or early morning flight, there are no worries to wait for the trains and buses to start operating. It is possible to return your car to another location too. For the most standard type of mobile, the fee is approximately 10,000yen per day, and each additional day will cost 8,000~9,000yen. If you are traveling in a big party, this will be a choice to consider.

Feel like going crazy? You and three other passengers can ride in a custom Hermés Edition helicopter for 270,000 yen directly to downtown in a mere 20 minutes.

■Transit Comparison

Express Trains:

Plus: -Easy to transfer to other train lines on arrival -Fast, comfortable, and with toilets on board. -Stretch your legs and walk around -Drinks and snacks available -Charge any device with an AC outlet (except local trains) -Free Wi-Fi -Nice views of the countryside Minus: -Must walk a fair distance down to the tracks below the airport with your luggage -When you arrive you'll need to bring your bags through busy train stations, then make your way to your hotel on foot or by taxi

Plus: -Wide variety of arrival points -Toilets available on most buses -Minimal walking as departure points are right outside the doors of the airport -Goes straight to the door of many major hotels -Free Wi-Fi (must sign-up at the airport) Minus: -Comfortable enough but you can't walk around -Transport time is longer than the train, but usually less than their given estimate -No AC outlets -Rather boring views on the highway (though downtown is exciting)

Narita Airport to Tokyo

A complete list of transfers.

After a long flight getting from the airport to your accommodation can be strenuous, so doing your research before your trip is guaranteed to make your arrival much smoother. To save you some time googling for the best or cheapest transfer out there, I’ve compiled a comprehensive overview of all your transfer options from Narita Airport to Tokyo.

⚠️ Do not tip your driver! Tipping is considered rude in Japan.

Table of Contents

About Narita Airport (NRT)

Narita Airport is one of the two major airports in the Tokyo area and also the hub of many major airlines, such as ANA Airways or Japan Airlines. It’s the second busiest airport in the country and serves 50% of international passengers, meaning that it’s likely you’ll fly into it. Narita is located in the Chiba prefecture east of Tokyo and about 37 miles (60km) from Tokyo city enter , which is roughly 25 miles (40 km) more than the distance from Haneda Airport to Tokyo city center.

Always be sure to know which terminal you arrive in by checking your airline’s designated terminal at Narita .

Your transfer options

Just because Narita is further away from Tokyo’s city center than Haneda, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s complicated to find the best airport transfer from NRT to Tokyo that fits your personal needs. Which transportation from Narita to Tokyo you should choose for yourself depends on the money you want to spend, the time you have to spare, and the level of comfort you prefer . Before you get overwhelmed by all the different options you have to get from the airport to Tokyo, here’s an overview:

🚁HELICOPTER

My pick: The Keisei Skyliner! It’s fast and easy.
  • cheapest transfer : Access Narita and Tokyo Shuttle (bus)
  • fastest transfer : Keisei Skyliner (train)
  • best door-to-door transfer : Private transfer (taxi)
  • kid-friendly transfer : Private transfer (taxi)

1. Get on a Bus

Shared Shuttle

  • direct service to hotel/apartment

The shared shuttle is a good option for those who do not want to worry about how to get from the airport to the hotel. All you need is to submit the address you’d like to be driven to – that’s it! The shared shuttle will get you directly to your destination, regardless of the address. The downside of this type of shuttle from Narita to Tokyo is that you’ll be sharing the shuttle with other travelers, meaning you won’t know who’ll be dropped off first. If you’re unlucky and you’re the last passengers on the shuttle, the airport transfer could take a really long time.

Getting tickets: To book the shuttle from Narita to Tokyo, you should reserve your tickets in advance as they will be much cheaper online. Once you’ve booked, you’ll receive a voucher that you can present at the airport to exchange it for your actual ticket to board the bus.

Reserve Shuttle

Tokyo Shuttle

  • 70 minutes to Tokyo Station
  • Tokyo Station, Shinonome Station

Taking the bus from Narita to Tokyo is by far the cheapest airport transfer. It offers direct service to Tokyo Station in the center of the city where you can transfer onto major subway lines as well as JR lines. What’s oftentimes overseen is that the Tokyo shuttle has another stop at Shinonome after Tokyo Station meaning you can choose which station is best for you to reach your hotel or accommodation. Tokyo Shuttle runs regularly, about every 20 minutes. You can look at the bus schedule with all daily departures to plan your trip.

Getting tickets : To use the Tokyo Shuttle from Narita International Airport, you don’t need a reservation. Simply head to the Keisei Bus ticket counter in your terminal and purchase your transfer tickets there. A round trip will cost you 1,900 Yen. There is, however, a surcharge for late night or early morning rides. Instead of 1,000 Yen, you’ll be paying 2,000 yen directly at the bus in cash.

What you should know: For those of you who require an early morning or late night ride, there’s a trick. By booking online you save half the price, which again amounts to the regular fare at around 900 Yen. The problem is that it is extremely hard to find the online tickets and the translations on the page aren’t always clear and accurate.

Access Narita Bus

  • Ginza Station, Tokyo Station

Access Narita Bus departs from terminals 1, 2, and 3 and drops you off at Ginza Station and Tokyo Station, both located in the city center. At Ginza Station Sukiyabashi, you can easily switch to the metro system. At Tokyo Station Yaesu South Entrance, you’ll have direct access to all JR lines. The bus service operates 142 times a day, departing every 15 during peak periods.

Getting tickets: You don’t need to prebook any tickets before getting to Narita Airport. Simply head to the ticket counter at any terminal.

What you should know: There’s a limit of one suitcase per person. On the other hand, however, there’s a lavatory on board.

2. Take a train

When taking the train from Narita to Tokyo, you should know that you have four options, three of which are Keisei Line trains: Main Line, Skyliner, and the Access Express. The fourth options you have is the Narita Express (N’EX) by Japan Rail. All trains offer service between Narita airport and downtown Tokyo.

Keisei trains offer free WiFi during the entire ride and have dedicated luggage space. Generally, the Keisei trains, as all Japanese trains in general, are spacious and clean. All seats are equipped with power outlets for the case that your phone didn’t survive the flight.

Keisei Main Line

  • 120 minutes
  • Nippori Station, Ueno Station

Choosing Keisei main line is the cheapest option of the three Keisei trains. It is, after all, a regular commuter train. Even though the train will get you to Tokyo without hassle, it takes relatively long and also is crowded most of the time. After arriving at Nippori or Ueno, you have access to the metro system to reach your final destination.

Keisei Skyliner

The Keisei Skyliner is by far the fastest option to take a train to Tokyo. The high-speed train is the fastest airport transfer traveling at a speed of 100mph (160km/h). It departs three times every hour and gets you to Nippori only 36 minutes. If your destination is Ueno add on 5 more minutes. The speedy service does come with a higher price.

Ueno Station is well-connected, so you can easily continue your journey by subway. Nippori Station, on the other hand, is well-connected to JR lines, so if you’re planning to leave Tokyo right away, this is the best transfer option.

Getting tickets: There are ticket counters and ticket machines for Skyliner tickets located at the airport. To save some money, you can pre-purchase tickets with online discounts. It will not only save you money but also more time. Since you would already be choosing a fast transfer with the Skyliner already, you probably don’t care to spend time waiting in line unnecessarily. With an online ticket, all you need to do is exchange your e-voucher for a ticket.

Access Express

  • Shinagawa, Shimbashi, Nihombashi

The Access Express is something in the middle of the Main Line and the Skyliner. It is cheaper than the Skyliner, but not as fast. However, it is more expensive than the main line, but faster. It does take a different route. The Access Express gets you straight from Narita Airport to Shinagawa, Shimbashi, and Nihombashi.

Narita Express (N’EX)

  • 52 minutes to Tokyo Station
  • $36 / free with a JR Pass
  • Tokyo Station, Yokohama

The Narita Express is an offer by JR East. It’s fast and convenient, and can even get you all the way to Yokohama should you be staying there or taking a cruise from there. Narita Express runs on a regular schedule, every 30 minutes.

Getting tickets: Narita Express N’EX tickets are, like many other services and products, only available for non-Japanese travelers. If you don’t already have a JRPass, you can get tickets at any JR ticket travel center, ticket counter, or ticket machine at the airport. For travelers returning to Narita airport, it’s best to purchase a round trip as it saves you some money compared to one-way tickets. You have the option to travel in an ordinary car or a green car, which is equivalent to first class. Ordinary.

Good to know: If you have a Japan Rail Pass, it still probably isn’t worth it to use it for your airport transfer unless your plan doesn’t include staying in Tokyo but onward travel right away. Activating your JR Pass for the airport transfer is only worth it if your pass validity exceeds the length of your travel plans. To use your JR Pass or JReast Pass for the Narita Express, all you need to do is reserve a seat for the train ride. There’s no payment needed since you are already a Japan Rail Pass holder.

3. Grab a taxi

Private transfer.

Taking a private transfer is probably the most convenient way to travel from NRT to Tokyo. Why? Upon exiting your terminal, a driver will be waiting for you holding a sign with your name. It’s the most worry-free option as you literally won’t have to think about a thing and instead can focus on your excitement of being in Japan.

You will need to pay a little extra for the convenience. The cost of a private transfer starts at $…

Grabbing a regular taxi from Narita Airport to Tokyo is a very convenient option to reach your accommodation. It is, however, also one of the most expensive airport transfers to Tokyo.

How to get a taxi: Simply follow the taxi signs to get outside your terminal at Narita airport. You will need to queue up and wait for your turn. There’s no flat rate for the taxi ride to Tokyo from Narita, but you can expect to pay about $280 per taxi.

UBER is known to be the budget-friendly pendent to a regular taxi. Even though they do operate in Japan, the service is by far not as common as it is in the United States or other countries. UBER in Japan is mostly used for airport transfers, as taxi services in Tokyo seem redundant due to its extraordinarily great public transportation system. Despite that fact that an UBER from NRT to Tokyo by UBER is less expensive than a regular taxi, it is still not the cheapest transfer option.

How to use UBER: Using UBER requires you to download the app on your phone. If you haven’t signed up yet, you can take advantage of our promo code to save on your first rides. Once you have arrived, you can open the app and enter your destination. A driver will automatically be assigned to you and find you within minutes. You’ll be charged over the app, so there is no risk of getting ripped off, which would be extremely rare in Japan anyway.

Good to know: As UBER is an internet-based app, you’ll need access to the internet in order to call your UBER. A great tool is the fare estimate that can give you a rough idea of what costs to expect for your airport transfer to Tokyo. Whether you are planning to use UBER or not, I dearly recommend getting a sim card or pocket wifi for your Japan trip to stay connected.

4. Fly by helicopter

  • Tokyo heliport

This option is surely nothing I would recommend to anybody, but I decided to list it for completion purposes. Undoubtedly, a helicopter ride is the most luxurious way to get from NRT to Tokyo. Unless you have a large amount of money to burn, it’s quite ridiculous. If you’re short on time, however, you could kill two birds with one stone using this transfer from Narita to Tokyo. For me, it would be crazy to recommend a helicopter transfer!

Narita to Tokyo with Japan Rail Pass

Did you buy a JR Pass to travel across Japan? Well, the good news is that the JR Pass is valid on the Narita Express offering frequent service between the airport and Tokyo. You would, however, need to activate your JR Pass to use it on the express. If you do not plan on traveling by bullet train right away, it’s probably not worth it to use the JR Pass for the Narita Express, as you’ll be better off paying for the airport transfer separately rather than lose a day of your pass.

JR PASS GUIDE

What is the cheapest airport transfer from Narita to Tokyo?

If you’re looking for the cheapest transfer to get you from NRT to Tokyo, you should hop on a shuttle bus. Tokyo Shuttle and Access Narita both take you to the city for 1,000 Yen. The benefit of saving money, unfortunately, is counterbalanced with the longest transfer time. Expect to be on the bus for 80-120 minutes.

Is there UBER in Tokyo?

Yes, UBER is available in Japan, including in its capital Tokyo. It is, however, less popular compared to the United States and therefore also scarce. It’s rather used for airport transfers as opposed to trips within the city. Public transportation in Tokyo enjoys a great reputation, making it so easy to get from A to B that you don’t really need a taxi or UBER within the city.

What is the Narita Express?

The Narita Express is a train that offers service between Narita Airport and Tokyo.

Do taxi drivers in Tokyo speak English?

A little bit if you’re lucky! English is very limited in Japan and compared to other countries, you will have a much harder time finding English speakers in Japan. That includes taxi drivers. However, due to their increased exposure to tourists, most understand the very basics – just enough to get you to your destination.

How much do I tip my taxi driver in Tokyo?

You don’t tip your taxi driver. In fact, you do not tip in Japan at all because it’s culturally inappropriate to do so. Your tip will be rejected and also make the other person feel very uncomfortable.

I only have a stopover at Narita. What do I do?

If your stopover is less than 2 hours, you should stay at the airport to avoid missing your connecting flight. Is your layover longer than that, I recommend taking a hotel shuttle bus (for free) and heading to Narita View Hotel to use the onsen there. That’s exactly what I did when I first traveled to Japan. We fly into Tokyo and had a connecting flight to Osaka the same day. The Onsen at the hotel was a great and inexpensive experience.

Is Haneda or Narita closer to Tokyo?

Out of the two Tokyo airports, Haneda is in the closer distance to the city center than Narita. So if you have the choice between the two, it’s better to opt for Haneda. If you’re landing in Narita, however, don’t worry. It’s still easy and fast to get to the city center, especially by the Skyliner high-speed train.

From Tokyo to Narita Airport

When it’s sadly time to leave and you’re looking for a way to get from Tokyo to Narita you’ll have the same options as to when you arrived. Simply do them in reverse . Remember that, ideally, you should be at the airport 2 hours before your departure if you have a domestic flight and 3 hours if you are traveling internationally.

As soon as you step off the plane, you'll be greeted by bustling cityscapes, serene temples, and a culture steeped in rich tradition. However, before you dive into the neon-lit streets of Tokyo, there's some important information you should know first, such as how far Narita Airport is from Tokyo, or how to get from Narita to Tokyo. Worry no more! In this Traveloka article, we will provide important information about the transport options you can use to reach Tokyo from Narita Airport. Check out the full information in the article below!

Narita International Airport is located about 70 kilometres east of central Tokyo. It takes about 1 to 3 hours to reach Tokyo from Narita Airport, depending on the mode of transport you choose. The following are some of the transport options you can use to get from Narita Airport to Tokyo.

Narita Airport to Tokyo by Train

Travelling from Narita Airport to Tokyo by train is a convenient and efficient way to start your exploration of Japan's capital city. Two major railway operators, Japan Rail East (JR East) and Keisei Electric Railway, provide services from Narita Airport. Stations operated by both companies are located in Terminals 1 and 2 of the airport, so you can easily access the trains upon arrival.

1. Japan Rail East (JR East) - Narita Express

travel from narita airport to tokyo

The Narita Express, or N'EX, is JR's limited express train known for its speed and comfort. It offers direct connections from Narita Airport to major stations in Tokyo, making it a great choice for travellers who want to stay near these stations or who want to catch the Shinkansen at Tokyo Station.

In addition, travelling by the N'EX train also takes only a very short time, which is about 53 minutes from Narita Airport to Tokyo Station, 1 hour 15 minutes from Narita Airport to Shibuya Station, and about 1 hour 25 minutes from Narita Airport to Shinjuku Station.

There are two seating classes available, the Green Car and the Regular Car, which are similar to first class and economy class respectively, with all seats reserved. Regardless of class, all the carriages of this train are very comfortable, spacious, and clean. In addition, each class of train is also equipped with luggage storage racks with number locks for added security.

2. Keisei Electric Railway

If you're looking for the fastest route to Tokyo, look no further than the Keisei Electric Train. This express train will take you quickly from Narita Airport to Nippori Station in 36 minutes and Ueno Station in just 41 minutes! At Ueno Station, you can easily transfer to Toei's Oedo Line, Hibiya Line, Tokyo Metro's Ginza Line, and access JR Ueno Station on foot.

Unlike the JR Narita Express, the Keisei Electric Railway offers only one class of reserved seats that are as cosy, spacious, and clean as they come. Each train car is also equipped with luggage storage at the back, so you can enjoy travelling to the heart of Tokyo in comfort. This makes it an ideal choice for those looking for quick access between Narita Airport and Tokyo city centre.

3. Local Trains

Besides N'EX and Skyliner, there are several local train lines that run between Narita Airport and the city of Tokyo. These options cater to budget travellers looking for a more economical way to reach Tokyo.

However, it is important to note that these local trains are slower and often more crowded compared to the other two train options. In addition, these trains may require one or more transfers along the way.

It is also worth noting that this train does not provide dedicated storage for your luggage. For those with a lot of luggage, it is recommended to avoid using this local train during peak hours to ensure a more comfortable journey.

Narita Airport to Tokyo by Bus

Besides using the train, using the bus is also a convenient and economical way to get from Narita Airport to Tokyo. Here is a complete guide to navigating this route:

4. Airport Limousine Bus

Several buses run from Narita Airport to Tokyo every hour, with travel time to most hotels in Tokyo usually taking around 1 hour 30 minutes, depending on traffic conditions. These buses offer comfort and ample space, with special storage for large suitcases. In addition, the buses are also equipped with amenities such as free Wi-Fi and air-conditioning for a pleasant journey.

How To Get From Narita Airport To Central Tokyo Using Public Transport

travel from narita airport to tokyo

Narita Airport to Tokyo with public transport

Alighting from the plane and stepping into Narita Airport, you take a deep breath and savour the chilly air of Tokyo, before embarking on your great escape to the land of futuristic streets and the freshest sushi – or so you thought. Before long, you realise that Narita International Airport – which handles most of Tokyo’s international flights – is situated about 60 kilometres away from Tokyo. Faced with a variety of options to the city, it suddenly seems a little intimidating.

Well, don’t stress yourself out over picking the best mode of transport to the city because we’ve done all the legwork for you. Be it the cheapest, the fastest, or the most comfortable, read this guide to find out how you can get to Tokyo in a way that best suits you.

narita tokyo

– By Train –

1. jr narita express (n’ex).

JR N'EX

If comfort and convenience is your concern, then the JR Narita Express (N’EX) is a great option. With pillows and reclining seats, it’s easy to take a quick nap to recharge before taking on the city. Each ticket guarantees you an assigned seat, so you don’t have to jostle with the crowd for a seat and luggage space.

What makes the N’EX standout, however, is that it brings you directly to central Tokyo without any need for transfers. The N’EX serves major urban stations such as Tokyo Station, Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku and Ikebukuro, so it’s ideal if you’re looking for a direct service towards these stations without any transfers. Do check the schedule to find out which trains stop at those stations here .

While the N’EX is the priciest train option and there aren’t combo discounts available, there are still some ways to save on the tickets. For example, purchase the N’EX Tokyo Round Trip Ticket for a discounted return trip to the airport. The service is also covered by the JR Pass and the three-day JR Tokyo Wide Area Pass if you have already purchased one.

For travellers intending to travel beyond Tokyo, the N’EX goes as far as Kurihama in Kanagawa Prefecture and Omiya in Saitama. It’s great value for money if you’re heading to surrounding cities like Yokohama. Coupled with the JR Pass, you could arrive in further cities such as Kyoto and Osaka in a relatively short amount of time.

Tip: Activating the JR Pass isn’t recommended if you’re going to be in Tokyo for the next few days. The JR Pass allows you to utilise the shinkansen bullet trains, other non-bullet trains, buses and even ferries operated by the JR Group – these rides are often costly if you’re purchasing a single-use ticket. While you can use the JR Pass within Tokyo for its subway lines, it would be wise to only activate it when you’re heading out of Tokyo for an inter-city trip to maximise the JR Pass’ utility and get your money’s worth.

One-way trip to Tokyo Station Price: ¥3,070/pax for adults, ¥1,530/pax for children

N’EX Tokyo Round Trip Price: ¥4,070/pax for adults, ¥2,030/pax for children

Estimated travel time : 1 hour, departs every 25-40 minutes

Check their list of departures here .

2. Keisei Skyliner

Keisei Skyliner

Connecting Narita Airport to Nippori Station and Ueno Station, the Keisei Skyliner is the fastest way to reach central and downtown Tokyo. With an impressive travel time of only 36 minutes to Nippori Station and 41 minutes to the well-connected Ueno Station, it’s convenient to transfer to the other stations in the city.

Its sleek interiors and comfort-oriented design provide one of the best passenger experiences anyone can ask for. Ergonomically-designed seats, individual power outlets and free Wi-Fi are just some of the creature comforts one can expect to find onboard the Skyliner.

While rides on the Skyliner are not covered by the JR Pass, tickets are cheaper than the N’EX. Discount packages combining airport transfer and a Tokyo subway day pass or Teito Taxi pickups from Ueno Station are available.

Tip: Book tickets online before arrival to save time and hassle. Tickets purchased in advance are also cheaper. Also, if you have too much baggage with you and you’d like to start sightseeing straightaway, luggage delivery service is available.

One-way trip to Nippori Station and Ueno Station Price: ¥ 2,520/pax for adults, ¥ 1,270/pax for children

Purchasing online for one-way trip to Nippori Station and Ueno Station Price: ¥2,250/pax for adults, ¥1,120/pax for children

Pur chasing online for round trip Price: ¥4,380/pax for adults, ¥2,190/pax for children

Estimated travel time : 36 minutes, departs every 20 minutes

3. Keisei Access Express

Keisei Access Express

The Keisei Access Express is a great option for budget travellers who don’t have much luggage and don’t mind squeezing with the regular commuter crowd. If you can’t wait to dive straight into sightseeing around the popular destinations in Tokyo, the Access Express is a fast and direct train service which connects you directly to the Toei Asakusa Line and JR Yamanote Line. That means you could head directly to central Tokyo districts like Asakusa and Higashi-Ginza, making it better connected than the Skyliner.

The Access Express Line is surprisingly quick, with an estimated travel time of less than an hour from the airport to Asakusa Station. While it is ¥200 more expensive than the regular Keisei trains heading to the city, the additional speed and convenience make the additional fee worth it. However, if you’re looking for a comfortable ride with guaranteed seats, the express trains may be better options for you.

One-way trip to Asakusa Price: ~ ¥ 1,310/pax for adults, ~ ¥ 650/pax for children Estimated travel time: 57 minutes

4. JR Sōbu Line (Rapid)

Sobu Line

A cheaper alternative to the N’EX on the JR lines, the Sōbu Line Rapid Service connects you to Tokyo on a conventional commuter train.

While inexpensive, the Sōbu Line Rapid Service does take a longer time to get you to Tokyo – about an hour and a half to Tokyo Station, plus you’ll have to transfer to the line at Chiba Station. As it’s a normal commuter train, it does stop at several stations and can get crowded during the morning and evening rush hours. Seats and luggage space may be hard to come by during peak hours.

To get to central Tokyo, take a JR Narita Line train bound for Chiba Station before transferring to the Sōbu Rapid Line.

Tip: Avoid the rush hours, which are typically 7.30AM to 9.30AM  and 5.30PM to 7.30PM. If you’re intending to take the Sōbu Line but find yourself caught in the rush hour, go for a meal instead. If all else fails, head to the ends of the cabins for more luggage space.

One-way trip to Tokyo Station Price: ~¥1,350/pax for adults, ~¥680/pax for children Estimated travel time: 1.5 hours, departs every 10 minutes

5. Keisei Limited Express

Keisei Limited Express

The cheapest way to travel to central Tokyo by train is to take the Keisei Limited Express . Similar to the Access Express, it connects to the Toei Asakusa Line and JR Yamanote Line – Tokyo’s central loop.

The Limited Express is a conventional commuter train, which means it can also get very crowded during the rush hours. Nevertheless, because of its affordability and frequency, it’s the preferred choice for many travellers who are on a tight budget and don’t mind the extra bit of time it takes.

One-way trip to Tokyo Station Price: ~ ¥ 1,210/pax for adults, ~¥610/pax for children Estimated travel time: 1 hour 15 minutes, departs every 20 minutes

– By Bus –

6. airport limousine bus.

Narita Airport Limousine

The Airport Limousine Bus is an option for those with large pieces of luggage looking for a direct connection to their hotels. The service covers most areas in the city and the major hotels around them. This means you can skip the hassle of carting your luggage around while navigating the subway system, saving you some energy to take on the rest of your adventure.

There are, however, some restrictions on luggage pieces. Each passenger can check-in up to 2 pieces of luggage with dimensions below 50cm x 60cm x 120 cm and not exceeding 30kg each. Call ahead (+81-03-3665-7220) to make special arrangements for equipment like surfboards, skis and fishing rods.

It takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to reach Tokyo Station, depending on traffic conditions. Peak hours do cause additional travel time, so do allocate some time for delays. Buses leave every 20 minutes, so little waiting time is required.

Tickets for the Airport Limousine are pricey. Depending on your destination, they go for around ¥ 3000. Nonetheless, special discounts for round trips back to the airport and special rates for youths and the elderly. Do reserve your tickets early as seats for the buses heading to popular hotel locations like Shinjuku are snapped up fairly quickly.

Tip: For a more comfortable experience, the premium express trains such as the Skyliner and N’EX are more preferable as they’re in the same price range. Still, limousine buses are more luxurious than the discount shuttle buses – expect spacious seats, leather headrests and a washroom on board. You can reserve the front row seats for additional legroom if you have long legs. Free Wi-Fi is also available onboard.

One-way trip to Tokyo Station Price: ~ ¥ 3,000/pax for adults, ~ ¥ 1,500/pax for children

Round trip Price: ¥ 4,500/pax Estimated travel time: 1.5-2 hours, departs every 20 minutes

7. ‘Discount’ Shuttle Bus

Narita Discount Shuttle Bus

For travellers with a tight budget like backpackers and those not in a hurry, this is the best and cheapest option for you.

With inexpensive tickets of only ¥1,000/pax and frequent departures at every 10-20 minutes, these buses are very popular amongst tourists and locals alike. The service also begins as early as 5.55AM and the last bus departs at 12.30AM, which makes it a good transport alternative for travellers who arrive outside of train operating hours (7.30AM to 11.30PM). Late-night buses departing after 11.10PM cost a little more at ¥2,000/pax.

Legroom is around 85.5cm wide – approximately the same space as what you’d get on an economy flight – and you’ll still be able to catch a nap on the 1.5 hour-long ride. To sweeten the deal, combo discounts with subway passes and a round trip back to the airport is available .

Check-in luggage is limited to just one piece per passenger, and cannot weigh over 20kg. Carry-on bags must be stowed in the overhead compartment.

The ‘discount bus’ service is actually provided by three different shuttle services. Tokyo Shuttle connects to Tokyo Station and Yurakucho Shuttle links to Yurakucho, just adjacent to Ginza. THE Access Narita connects to both Tokyo and Ginza Stations.

Tickets returning to Narita Airport are often fully booked and seating priority is given to passengers who have reserved a ticket over passengers purchasing tickets over the counter, so do book them early. You can book tickets for Tokyo Shuttle and Yurakucho Shuttle here .

Tip: Tokyo Shuttle and THE Access Narita will merge in February to become a single service, TYO-NRT Airport Bus . Do note this change and don’t be alarmed to find a different-looking bus company operating. Also, toilets are not available at the bus stops, so visit one before boarding the bus.

One-way trip to Tokyo Station or Ginza Station Price: ¥ 1,000/pax in the day, ¥ 2,000/pax from 11.10PM to 12.30AM Estimated travel time: 1.5-2 hours, departs every 10-20 minutes

– By Taxi –

Airport Taxi

This is the most direct way to your accommodation, but also the most expensive option on the list.

Taking a taxi is a preferred option for those who are arriving in the wee hours of the day and don’t want to spend time waiting in the airport for the train and bus services to begin, as well as for those who want to have the luxury of a private vehicle to themselves. Travellers in groups of 4 would sometimes take the taxi too, depending on the amount of luggage they’re carrying with them.

On the other hand, taking the taxi from Narita Airport to central Tokyo is extremely expensive. It costs over ¥ 20,000 to get to the city, excluding expressway tolls and other additional charges.

As most taxi drivers don’t speak English, it’d be good to have a copy of your hotel’s address ready to show your taxi driver if you can’t speak Japanese. If all else fails, Google Translate is your best friend.

Tip: Fixed fare taxis to the city are available, depending on the area you’re heading to. Advance reservation is not required, but speak to the taxi driver before hopping onboard.

One-way trip to Tokyo Station Price: ¥ 22,000 from 5AM to 10PM, ¥ 26,000 from 5AM to 10PM Estimated travel time:  1-1.5 hours

travel from narita airport to tokyo

Tokyo area has two airports. One of the airport – Narita Airport is located in the 70km (43 miles) east of Tokyo city center. Yes, it’s far. If your destination is Tokyo and have choice of Narita Airport (NRT) or Haneda Airport (HND) upon your purchasing ticket, you might want to choose Haneda which is much closer to Tokyo city center. However, do not worry even if you have tickets to Narita (NRT), there are several options that takes you to Tokyo city center.

Today I’d like to explain about the 3 train routes and 2 bus services from Narita Airports to Tokyo. In this article, you’ll find out what is the fastest, cheapest and the best choice for your next travel to Tokyo.

TRAINS – Which train is for you?

First, probably the most common public transportation from Narita to Tokyo is trains.

Two Train companies JR and KEISEI runs a special airport train with reserved seat. JR runs Narita Express (N’EX) and KEISEI runs Sky Liner . There is also a train called Access Express , which takes you to Tokyo city center and Haneda airport. This one doesn’t have reserved seat. The destination and price  are different, so you can decide based on your destination and budget.

The merit of using train is,  the train is fast and it doesn’t get influenced by traffic. What I like about train is usually it’s safer, and you can walk around unlike the bus. Your trip is not influenced by the driving technique of the driver too.

There are two stations travelers who arrives at Narita Airport will use. Narita Airport Station (Terminal 1)  and Terminal 2 Station (Terminal 2 and 3). You can use both trains from both stations, so once you arrive and leave custom, proceed to the station in the basement. You’ll find both JR and KEISEI stations next to each other.

These are some other local trains that you can take from these  two airport stations. So make sure you are on the right train.

  • JR line ( Narita Express and Local Trains to Narita city, Chiba, and Tokyo)
  • Keisei Line – Sky Access ( Skyliner and Access Express )
  • Keisei Line  (Local trains to Narita city, Chiba and Ueno)

Most of the local trains are for local users, but the Access Express is very useful for tourists too. Let’s see one by one.

Narita Express (N’EX)

First Narita Express is operated by JR, and it takes you directly to Tokyo Station, Shibuya Station, and Shinjuku Stations. Some trains goes to Shinagawa and Yokohama. It takes about 1 hour to Tokyo Station and 1 hour and 30 minutes to Shinjuku, so it DOES take time but it’s a great relieve that you can go directly to those stations after long flight, carrying big suitcases. For any travelers, the first thing you want to do is to unload the luggages and make sure you have a good space to sleep that night. So I recommend you to find the fastest route to your accommodation.

travel from narita airport to tokyo

So that is 6500 Yen for round trip to Shinjuku. That is expensive. If you return in 14 days with Narita Express Again, you can consider “ N’EX Tokyo Round Trip Ticket” which is 4,070 Yen round trip . Make sure you ask that ticket for the staff at the airport station.

If you are planning to use Japan Rail Pass , Narita Express is the only choice as the reserved seats of Narita Express is included in the pass. You need to activate the pass and make seat reservation before you get on the Narita Express, so make sure you stop at the JR counter which you can find easily at the gate of JR stations in Narita Airport.

You can activate your JR pass at JR East Travel Service Center in front of the train gate. (Left on the photo)

You can get ticket with reserved seat at the counter and proceed to the platform. Just make sure that you don’t get on the local train. Narita Express is a train with red, white and black design.

So for whom, Narita Express is good?

Narita Express is good for you if,

  • Your final destination is near Tokyo Station, Shibuya, Shinjuku
  • You want to use Japan Rail Pass

Link to Narita Express (JR East)

Keisei Skyliner is a rapid train service from Narita Airport to Nippori, and Ueno in Tokyo city center. All seats are for reservation only and the biggest merit of the Skyliner is the speed to the Ueno. It runs with 160km /h which is very fast for non-Shinkansen train in Japan. It takes you to the Nippori station in about 40 minutes . The service runs every 20 minutes (40 minutes at night) . The fare is 2590 Yen , and a little more reasonable than Narita Express.

Skyline stops at Nippori and Keisei Ueno Station. Unless you have accommodation booked near Ueno Station, you want to get off at Nippori station and change to JR Lines.

So for whom, Skyliner is good?

Keisei Skyliner is good for you if,

  • Your final destination is near Ueno station
  • Your final destination is on the station easily accessible from Nippori station, such as Akihabara or Ikebukuro.
  • Asakusa is another town that is close to Ueno. But there is another way to go directly to Asakusa too.

Link to Skyliner (Keisei Railway)

Access Express is a regular train that connects Narita Airport and Haneda Airport, which is on the other side of Tokyo. The train use the fast track called (Sky Access) the same as Skyliner, and it takes you to the city center of Tokyo with some stops. You don’t need any reservation for this train, so the fare will be around 1300 Yen, which is much cheaper than using Skyliner or Narita Express which has only reserved seat.

The train will directly goes into subway called Asakusa Line, so if your destination is on Asakusa line, it might be easier to take this Access Express instead of any other services.

The major station in Tokyo that Access Express train stops:   Asakusa – Nihonbashi – Shinbashi – Daimon.

The major problem is that it comes only every 40 minutes or so, and it doesn’t run in the evening (and the direction changes to Ueno instead of Haneda Airport).  Also the train is not just for airport users, so it can be busy in the morning and the evening. You might feel less comfort comparing with reserved train like Skyliner or Narita Express.

I personally take this Access Express a lot since it was easy to get to my home near Shinjuku, but when I’m tired, I use Skyliner to Ueno and change to Oedo Line or take Narita Express to Shinjuku.

So for whom, Access Express is good?

Access Express is good for you if,

  • Your final destination is along Toei Asakusa Line subway.
  • Your final destination is on the station easily accessible from stations of Asakusa Line.

How to get on Sky Liner and Access Express

When you get on the Sky Liner or Access Express, make sure you are on the right train with the right ticket. Both Narita Airport Station and Airport Terminal 2 stations has two different platforms for Tokyo direction. One is for Via Sky Access, and one if Via Keisei Line . You need to go to the platform of SKY ACCESS for Sky Liner and Access Express. It’s a little confusing as the destination is the same, but the route via Keisei Line takes much longer time. You use Keisei Line only in case you need to go to Narita city, or other stations along the Keisei Line.

travel from narita airport to tokyo

After you reached the platform, I want you to be careful not to take Access Express with Skyliner ticket, or take Skyliner without any reserved seat ticket.

Especially at Airpot Terminal 2 station, both train comes in the same platform. Skyliner is the one with white body and blue design with 2 doors per car, and Access Express is 3 door and seats are facing the side of the train.

When I took Access Express one time, I saw one guy who purchased Skyliner ticket but accidentally got on Access Express. He was sitting next to me and talked to me “Am I on the right train?” showing me the reserved seat ticket for Skyliner which was going to arrive right after our train. It was after leaving Airport Terminal 2 station, and there was no way to go back or change to Skyliner since the Skyliner is non-stop to Tokyo.

He looked quite upset and I didn’t have words to talk to him when Skyline pass by our train with massive speed… and the silence after that. I don’t want the reader of this blog experience the same.

Skyline is a white train with 2 doors. All seats are facing the front. Make sure you are on the right train.

The bus access between Narita Airport and Tokyo used to be only limousine bus that is connecting many major hotels in Tokyo and some major stations. But recently, more reasonable and convenient choice is available.

travel from narita airport to tokyo

The Airport Bus TYO-NRT is the shuttle service between Narita Airport and Tokyo Station . The bus will take you to Tokyo Station as fast as 65 minutes (depends on traffic) and it cost only 1300 Yen one way.

The bus runs every 10 minutes to 20 minutes between 3 terminals of Narita airport and Yaesu Gate of Tokyo Station.

To take the bus to Tokyo, you proceed to the bus ticket counter on the arrival gate and purchase your ticket. It’s easy to find the counter, but make sure you get the ticket at this counter before you proceed to the bus. You can get tickets for all bus services from Narita Airport here.

So for whom,Airport Bus TYO-NRT is good?

Airport Bus TYO-NRT is good for you if,

  • Your final destination is near Tokyo Station.
  • You are arriving on Airport Terminal 3. (It’s a long walk from Airport Terminal 2 station.)

Link to Airport Bus TYO-NRT

Limousine Bus offers a bus service between Narita Airports and some destinations in central Tokyo and Haneda Airport. The bus has direct service to major hotels in central Tokyo, so if you are stay at that hotel on the list, this will be your choice. The price is 3200 yen for adults ( 1600 yen for 6 -11 years old), so it’s a little pricy, but you can skip all the stress of getting on and off at the busy trains. The bus name is “limousine” but it’s a pretty normal bus with bathroom in the back.

Some major hotels with limousine buses stop.

  • Shinjuku: Hilton Tokyo, Hyatt Regency Tokyo, Park Hyatt Tokyo, Keio Plaza Hotel, Washington Hotel
  • Roppongi, Akasaka Area:  Ritz Carlton Tokyo, Grand Hyatt Tokyo, Hotel New Otani, Okura Tokyo, Capitol Tokyu Hotel
  • Ginza, Hibiya Area:  The Palace Hotel, The Imperial Hotel

* Due to the travel restrictions, the number of bus is limited so please check the updated information on the official homepage if you use them.

Limousine Bus is good for you if,

  • Your hotel is the list of bus destinations.

Link to Airport Limousine Bus

I recommend you to choose the easiest way because it’s very difficult to change trains with many suitcases after a long flight to Japan. Especially if your arrival time hits the morning or evening rush hours, it’s even more difficult. So you might wan to choose the transportation that takes you to the destination directly, or you can even consider choose the hotel that is convenient from Narita Airport for the first night.

Narita Express trains

Similar to most trains, Narita Express uses a separate railway, which means traffic never blocks it. The train offers beautiful views to and from the city, as the airport is located outside of Tokyo area .

Snack cars inside the trains pass by at regular intervals , offering tasty and affordable Japanese appetizers and drinks. Facilities on the train are well maintained and spotless – in the true Japanese spirit.

Green car interior

Narita Express trains offer luggage space and areas where you can lock your bags. Each separate seat provides a rather large seating area, which can also be used for placing your all luggage just before you. Overhead compartments above each seat are also available.

Narita Express map

The N’EX has two stops in Narita Airport, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2-3. The routes are   marked in red on the following map.

Hello! We are planning a trip to Japan, and will purchase the 14 day JR pass. Would we be able to;

1) Use a JR pass on the N’EX from Narita to Shinjuku? 2) If so, where can we make reservations?

Many thanks, Kristin

Hi Kristin! Yes, the N’EX is fully included in your Japan Rail Pass and will take you straight from Narita Airport to Shinjuku Station. Please note seat reservation is mandatory to board the Narita Express. To do so you will just need to take your Exchange Voucher and your passport to any JR Ticket Office (Midori-no-madoguchi), spread through all Japanese train stations and main airports. Happy travels!

We are arriving at Narita Airport from Australia in March 2020 and staying right near Shinagawa Station. We will be in Japan for a few weeks which includes a cruise. At the end of our holiday we would like to catch a train from Yokohama cruise port back to Narita Airport. What would it cost us for 2 Adults Narita to Shinagawa one way and 2 Adults Yokohama to Narita Airport one way and which trains do we catch?

Hi, My group of 13pax will be arriving at Narita Airport on 28/12/2019. Following is my schedule in Japan:- – 28/12/2019 – 1/1/2020 (5 days) (Arrive @ Narita Airport, Stay @ Shin Kamagaya, planning to visit Tokyo, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Yokohama, Hakone and Kanazawa) – 1/1/2020 – 5/1/2020 (4 days) (Leaving Tokyo for Nagoya on 1/1/2020, travelling around Nagoya, Gifu and returning home from Chubu Airport on 5/1/2020).

May I know whether whether the following routes are possible with the 7-day JR Pass:- – Narita to Shin-Kamagaya (vide JR Pass, NEX Express line) – Travelling around Tokyo, Hakone, Yokohama, Shibuya and Shinjuku (Which train to board) – Travel from Tokyo Station to Nagoya Station (Which train to board) – Travel from Nagoya Station to Chubu Airport (to separately purchase tickets to board for Meitetsu Railways)

Please advise. Million thanks. Kathleen

Hi, I am planning for my trip to Japan in Dec, and will be getting the JR Tohoku pass. Can i make seat reservations for the NEX (Narita – Tokyo) and Tokyo – Sendai Shinkansen in advance from outside of Japan? Thanks.

Hi, is anyone able to explain the steps requires/extra cost for getting back to narita with an nex round trip ticket?

I remember two years ago i had some difficulty getting back into the airport as apparently there was an additional fee i was to pay before arriving back at narita?

Hello. We are landing in Narita airport and going to Shizouka. Would we be able to use JR Pass to get from the airport to Shiouka? If so, what lines should we use? Thank you!

Hi Ben! The Tokaido Shinkansen connects Tokyo with Shizuoka. Upon arrival to Narita Airport, you may take the Narita Express to central Tokio and once there take your train to Shizuoka from either Tokyo or Shinagawa Stations. Happy travels!

I am travelling with my brother to Tokyo (Narita Airport) for a 9-day trip. Current travel plan are Tokyo (2 nights), then Kyoto (2 nights), then back to Tokyo (4 nights). I am unsure on how to get around in Tokyo, but assume the subway/skyline are the best way to get around. Are these included in the JR Pass?

Would you recommend a JR Pass for us?

Yes, the JR subway lines in Tokyo are included in the JR Pass, as well as the Narita Express which connects Tokyo to Narita Airport, but not the Keisei Skyliner. For your itinerary, the 14-day JR Pass would be a great fit.

Happy travels!

I want to book the roundtrip NEX promo. On the way back to Narita (from Tokyo Station), how do I book my reserved seats on NEX?

Hi, my visit to Japan will be a 8 day trip. Plan to purchase the 7 day pass. on my last day, can I still use (book) the Narita express for free since i have JP pass. (arrive Japan on the 7th morning and leaving on the 14 evening).

Hi Gigi! The Japan Rail Pass validity period is calculated in days, not in hours. Therefore, if you have purchased a 7-day pass and your activation date (when you first use the pass) is the 7th, the exact expiration time will be midnight on day 13. On 14th your Japan Rail Pass won’t be valid and hence you won’t be able to travel making use of it. Happy travels!

Hi! I just want to inquire. If I have already JR Pass and I will ride Narita Express. Can I book my seat reservation on the spot? For example, we will arrive on April 6, 11:35AM. We can reserve seat for the N’Ex departure at 12:00PM? Thank you!

Hi Elaine! Yes, once your Japan Rail Pass is exchanged you will be able to book your seat in the next NE’X available. Happy travels!

Hello, I am going on a trip that will cover 15 calendar days. If I want to use the JR Pass to ride the Narita Express when I arrive, do I have to activate the pass on that day? If so, does that mean I cannot use the pass on my return to the airport and must buy an individual ticket?

Hi Nathan! Your Japan Rail Pass has to be exchanged and within its activation period to be able to make use of it. Happy travels!

Hi, Does the Narita Express return ticket have to be used within 14 days of the first trip? I read on a JR web site that there is a validity period of 14 days ,what does that mean exactly?

Hi Maryanne! The Japan Rail Pass can have a validity of either 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days. During the validity scope you will be able to ride all the included transportation at no additional cost, however if you wish to travel when your pass is no longer valid you will have to pay additional tickets since your pass won’t be of use. Happy travels!

Hello! We will be arriving in Tokyo on January 29th, once at the airport we will have our JR voucher (Exchange Order) be exchanged at the JR office in Narita airport. We’re planning on using the JR pass (7 days) on the 31st of January to go to Osaka. My question is, will we be able to use our JR pass on the 29th of January going to Tokyo from Narita by Narita Express (N’EX) even though we will have the JR pass be used on the 31st for our Osaka trip? By the way, we will be returning to Tokyo on February 7. Are there gonna be problem like, my 7 day pass will not be enough? Thank you.

Hi Mari! The Japan Rail Pass validity period is calculated in days, not in hours. Therefore, if you have purchased a 7-day pass and your activation date (when you first use the pass) is the 29th of January, the exact expiration time will be midnight on February 4. All trips you make using the pass will be counted as use days. Happy travels!

Hello, Could you please share NEX Express schedule / timetable from Ikebukuro Station to Narita Airport ? Thank you.

Hi Lee! Please refer to the JR East schedules page to check the latest schedules from and to Narita Airport. Happy travels!

Need cost difference for adult pass or individual train tickets please.

Arrive Narita Apr 30 Narita to Tokyo Apr 30 4 days in Tokyo Apr 30 – May 3 Tokyo to Yokohama May 4

I plan to go to Osaka from Tokyo on March 20th around 2:00 pm, and leaving Japan from Narita airport on March 26th at 6:30 pm, do I need the 7 day pass or 14 day pass? thank you.

Hi Charlin! The Japan Rail Pass validity period is calculated in days, not in hours. Therefore, if you have purchased a 7-day pass and your activation date (when you first use the pass) is the 20th of March, the exact expiration time will be midnight on March 26. The 7-day pass should be enough.

You refer persons inquiring about schedule of operations for Narita Express to the JR East Schedule however that schedule does not show the beginning and ending time of operation. I need to arrive at Narita Airport by 7:30am. Is there a 6am NEX train from Shinjuku Station?

Hi Mark! The website with the N’EX operatin hours is properly linked in this article. As you will see, first train in the morning from Shinjuku Station to Narita Airport is at 05:55h. Happy travels!

HI, I would only need an airport transfer from Narita airport to Shinjuku and vice versa. Will the train stop at Shinjuku station? What ticket should I purchase and where?

thank you much!

Hi, May i know will keisei skyline stop at aoto station? How to book?

Hi, May i know will N’EX stop at Narita city station? Taking from Tokyo to Narita city station by N’EX. How long?

Hi Miko! All the stations of N’EX are listed in this article 😉 Please refer to the JR East schedules page to check the latest schedules from and to Narita Airport.

Hi! I will have a Japan Rail Pass, and plan to travel from Tokyo Station to Narita Airport via N’EX. I understand that I will need a Seat Reservation. My question is, can I make the seat reservation just right before boarding the Narita Express? Or must the seat reservation be made in advance?

Hi Pemberley! Yes, you can do the seat reservation just before boarding the train. Enjoy your stay!

Our JR pass will be expire on the 9 October.

Can we somehow I extend our JR pass until 12 October, so we can catch the train to Narita International Airport on the 12 October @10:00 to fly home.

Look forward to hear from you soon.

Hi Nghi! Once you purchase your JR Voucher, you cannot add extra days. And once you exchange it for the for the actual JR Pass and activate it, you cannot modify its validity period in any way. If you wish to extend your JR Pass, you will need to purchase a new one. JR Pass cannot be extended by 1,2, or more days. Happy travels!

Hi there! I will be going to Japan next year. I am sooooo excited, but a little anxious about getting around.

This is what my itinerary looks like so far.

-Arrival, March 21st Narita airport -March 21st-March 24th – Toyko -March 25th-March 26th – Hakone -March 27th -March 29th – Kyoto -March 30th-April 1st – Osaka -April 2nd – Tokyo Disney -April 3rd, Last Day in Toyko

Please advise on the following: 1. Should I do the 7 day pass or 14 day? 2. Am I able to go to Kobe with the pass from Osaka? 3. When should I activate my pass? 4. Do I always need to book my seats in advance? Even from Narita Airport to Toyko?

I would appreciate all of the help! 🙂

Hi Marielle,

1. For your itinerary, the 14 day JR Pass would be really convenient as it includes transportation in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, as well as the trains to Hakone and Tokyo Disney. 2. Yes, transportation to Kobe is also included! 3. Please check our FAQ about the JR Pass activation. 4. There is no need to book your seats before arriving in Japan. However, we recommend that, after activating the JR Pass , you go to the seat reservation counter to book the trains that suit you the most.

Hi there, If our itinerary is for 15days, do we need 21 days ticket, is it worth it or is it better just to top up the 14days ticket with one way N’EX ticket from Tokyo to Narita? we’ll be staying the last 5 days in Tokyo.

Thanks in advance,

Hi Sally! Since the last 5 days you’ll be staying in Tokyo a 14-day Japan Rail Pass should fit great your trip! The nation-wide pass means the greatest discount on Japanese public transport, however it is cost effective the more you travel 😉

Hi, I’m planning my trip to Japan , and I was thinking to get to the airport to Osaka first, next day going to Kyoto, spend there a couple of days and then going to Tokyo for 4 days: comeback home from Narita airport, is it worthy to buy the JR pass ticket for just a few trips :(osaka airport-osaka, osaka-kyoto, kyoto-tokyo and tokyo-airport)? because I can’t use it for travelling in the city by metro or bus, right? also I saw that UENO to narita airport trip by NEX (NARITA EXPRESS) is not included in the jr pass, so how much is the trip? thanks

Yes, the JR Pass is worth it for your itinerary. You can use it for moving around Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka:

https://www.jrailpass.com/blog/getting-around-tokyo-metro https://www.jrailpass.com/blog/getting-around-kyoto https://www.jrailpass.com/blog/osaka-city-loop-line

Regarding your last question, from Ueno Station you should head to Tokyo Station, where you can get the Narita Express to Narita Airport. The full trip is covered by the JR Pass.

Can I use JR Pass Regular from Tokyo to Osaka to Nara to Kyoto and back to Tokyo? I have 5 days to do this travel plan.

Hi ACA! Yes, you can use your Japan Rail Pass to reach all those destinations. Happy travels!

Hi, where do I buy a ticket to go to Tokyo station by NEX.

Hi Mi! N’EX is already included in your Japan Rail Pass , should you travel holding it you won’t need to purchase any individual ticket 😉

Hi, I am planning to go Nagano from Yashio city and I am thinking of getting a JR east pass. I would like to know if I can use the pass to get us back to Narita international airport?

Hi – I plan to buy the 7-day Japan Rail Pass but I will be staying for 9 days. Here is my rough schedule; arriving Fukuoka Airport with friends for 3 days then I will go to Osaka for 2 days then the rest in Tokyo. Understand that we can choose the activation date of the JR pass, my questions are: 1. Can I book the Narita Express to go to the airport as I will be leaving from Narita Airport when I land in Fukuoka once I land in Fukuoka without activating the pass? Can I also book the Hello Kitty Shinkansen from Hakata to Shin-Osaka and reserve seats already when I exchange the pass even if I choose to activate it on the 3rd day only? 2. Can I exchange the pass when I first land in Fukuoka but active date starts on the 3rd day so I can still use it until my last day in Tokyo for the Narita Express? 3. Is it better to visit Mt. Fuji using this JR pass? If so, I will go on my way to Tokyo, however, we have luggages, are we allowed to bring our luggages with us in and out of the trains in between and is there any storage place perhaps to keep our luggages first given our last stop will be in Tokyo but we just want to visit Mt.Fuji (Hakone or the Lake) just to see the Mt.Fuji? 4. Can I use this JR pass to travel from Fukuoka to Osaka then from Osaka to Tokyo and then when in Tokyo, to other places around Tokyo?

Appreciate your soonest advise so I know what type of pass to purchase, am really confused, thanks so much! LA

You will be able to reserve your seats once your Japan Rail Pass is exchanged, even if you are outside of its validity period. You can exchange your pass and set the activation date anytime within the following month.

Travellers are allowed luggage on board at Shinkansen bullet trains for no additional cost. There is a delivery service option too.

Enjoy your stay!

Hello. My partner is arriving at Narita Terminal 1 at noon and I am arriving at Terminal 2 at 3 pm. Can my partner exchange the voucher at Terminal 2 after I arrive so we can do it at the same time and make the reservation for the NEX train to Tokyo? Thank you so much.

Hi Glen! Sure, the voucher can be exchanged at any of the JR Exchange Offices . However since the duration is counted in days (not in hours) she can exchange it before and would still have a valid Japan Rail Pass until the same day as yours. Happy travels!

hello! do we buy the tickets in the airport when we arrive?

Hi Ava! The Japan Rail Pass be will sold at a higher price and on a trial basis in Japan from March 8, 2018 through March 31, 2019 at major stations and airports. However it is recomended to purchase it from official vendors such as http://www.jrailpass.com to get a better price and to be able to pay in your own currency, plus to avoid long queues.

Hello. I’m flying in to Tokyo October 9, 2018 @ 4pm. I’m going straight to Kyoto for a few days then coming back to Tokyo as I’m leaving from Narita on October 16, 2018 and will be at the airport around 8am. If I purchase my 7-day starting October 9, will I be able to make use the Narita Express on the morning of the 16th? Also if I’m taking the Narita Express to Tokyo then taking the bullet train to Tokyo which stop should I get off for that?

Hi BO! The Japan Rail Pass validity period is calculated in days, not in hours. Therefore, if you have purchased a 7-day pass and your activation date (when you first use the pass) is the 9th of October, the exact expiration time will be midnight on October 15.

Hi, I‘m planing on traveling from Kyoto to Hiroshima and then from Hiroshima to Tokyo. I know that the Rail Pass is not valid on the bulletin train. Are there any trains running or do I have to pay the full price for the bulletin train? Or just an additional fee?

hi we have JR Passes and go home tomorrow. please informations about reservation Narita Express. we need to use N’EX 7-7:30AM. Is possible make seet reservation a few minutes before taken Narita Expres and where?

Thanks a lot for help BR Jarek

As specified in this article, Japan Rail Pass holders can reserve a seat at any JR ticket office in Narita Airport, before boarding the train and without any additional payment. You can do this easily at any of the following locations:

– Narita Airport Stations (Terminal 1 and 2-3) – Japan Railways ticket offices – Travel service centers – Reserved seat ticket machines

Is there direct train to shibuya station?

Hi Aini! Yes – as you can read in this article, the Narita Express has a stop at Shibuya Station .

Japans Rail companies are amazing.

Hi, we will go to Japan on May 23-26. Is the Japan Rail Pass sufficient to go around Tokyo and nearby areas? or is there other cheaper tickets because we will be there for 4 days only?

Hi Roxanne!

The Japan Rail Pass is aimed for those wanting to travel around the whole country. Should you plan to only stay in Tokyo there are other cards that can be more cost saving such as SUICA or PASMO .

Enjoy your trip!

arhone hi can i use JR pass to mt fuji

Hi Sharone,

Yes you can! For most of the trip at least. Please check our Mount Fuji page for more information.

Hello, I’m hoping you could help me out with a few questions. I’ll be in Japan for 10 days, arriving in NRT, and going to Osaka, for 3 days, Kyoto for 3 days and spending the last 4 days in Tokyo.

1) Will a 7 day pass be sufficient? Are there passes I can purchase to cover my last 3 – 4 days in Tokyo without having to buy the 14 day JR Pass? 2) I will be ordering my pass online, but exchanging the voucher at the airport. Is this possible? Do i need to reserve my seat on the NRT Express after I pick up my pass?

Thanks Imas

Should you want to purchase a 7-day Japan Rail Pass , you can make use of a PASMO or SUICA Cards to move around Tokyo. That would be good since the pass is more cost effective the more you travel so if you cover the longest distances with the pass you can save money by purchasing a cheaper card for the days you don’t need to travel long distances.

As specified in this article, all N’EX seat reservations are available for free to any Japan Rail Pass holder. Holders can reserve a seat at any JR ticket office in Narita Airport, before boarding the train and without any additional payment.

We hope you have an amazing time in the land of the rising sun!

Hello, We are planning to go on 9 April from Tokyo to Kawaguichi-ko, and the next day leave Kawaguichi-ko to Kyoto. May I ask you what would be the most effective train route from Tokyo to Kawaguichi-ko and from Kawaguichi-ko to Kyoto? Thanks!

From Shinjuku Station in Tokyo, take the JR Chuo Line to Otsuki Station. There, transfer to the Fujikyu Railway Line to Kawaguchiko Station. This trip takes just under three hours.

Regarding the activation of Japan Rail Pass, after exchange of the temporary voucher to the Jr ticket office in the airport can I immediately use my JR pass on that day? I wanted to use it when I arrive in airport to go to Shinjuku?

Yes, you can start using your Japan Rail Pass the same day you exchange it. You will just need to set that day as the activation date upon exchanging at a JR Exchange Office.

I’ll be coming in from Osaka but my outbound would be Narita. If I purchase my 7-day starting June 13, will I be able to make use the Narita express on the morning of the 20th?

Hi Patricia!

The Japan Rail Pass validity period is calculated in days, not in hours. Therefore, if you have purchased a 7-day pass and your activation date (when you first use the pass) is the 13th of June, the exact expiration time will be midnight on June 19. Therefore you would not be able to use the pass on the morning of June 20th.

We will travel to Japan in May and arrive at Narita about 4:30 pm. We will purchase the voucher online and exchange for the JR Pass.

I will be in Japan March 14-28. However, I would like to purchase the JR pass for 7-days (from March 21-27) because those are the days I will be travelling round trip between Tokyo to Kyoto on the Shinkansen. My question is, if I purchase the JR pass for March 21-27, can I still use the Narita Express on March 14 and 28 to/from the Airport? Or is the NE’X by JR pass only inclusive of those 7 days?

Thanks, Johnny

Your pass will only be valid during your selected dates. That is, if you are travelling with a 7-day Japan Rail Pass and intend to use it from 21st March to 27th, you won’t be able to take any transportation with the pass outside those days. Should you need to take the Narita Express outside the validity period , you will need to pay for it separately.

I am traveling to Japan and i’ll arrive in Narita airport terminal 2 on 19 of may. I’m only staying for 15 days. I’m traveling from Tokyo>Hiroshima>Osaka>Nara>Kyoto>kanazawa>Nagano>Takayama>Mount Fugi>Tokyo, this is my travel plan. Can i use the japan rail pass in all this places? Or is not included for all of them? I will get the 14 days pass. How can I search the schedules of the diferents trains on the diferents palces?

Best regards Raquel

If you want to see schedules of the trains we strongly recommend you to check Hyperdia , which offers detailed timetables, platform information, trip duration and exact distance, which will help you greatly in organizing your trips in Japan.

The Japan Rail Pass will allow you to travel between all stated destinations:

– First, you can use your JR Pass to take the Sanyo Shinkansen line’s Hikari bullet train from Tokyo Station to the Shin-Osaka Station. You will then transfer to the Sakura train (on the same line) and arrive in Hiroshima at Hiroshima Station. – To get to Osaka from Hiroshima, just take the Sanyo Shinkansen line (westbound, Hikari trains) to Shin-Osaka Station . – Begin your trip from Osaka to Nara at the JR Osaka Station. Take the Yamatoji Rapid Train to JR Nara Station. – To get to Kyoto from Nara, take the Yamatoji Rapid Train from JR Nara Station. – To get to Takayama , from Shin-Osaka Station or Kyoto Station, take the Hikari or Kodama trains on the Tokaido Line to Nagoya, then take the JR Hida Limited Express (also known as Wide View) from Nagoya to Takayama. Kanazawa, nestled between the mountains and the Sea of Japan, is often the next stop for many tourists to Takayama. – Mount Fuji area is easily accessible with your Japan Rail Pass too, and it is also well connected to Tokyo for the last part of your trip.

We hope you enjoy your trip!

My partner and I will be arriving at Narita on April 23rd and will intend to be in Japan until March 14th.

During our 21 day holiday, we intend to travel from Tokyo to Mt Fuji (Fuji Q), Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Kobe, Naoshima, Hiroshima, Nagasaki (fly to) Okinawa (fly to) Sapporo & Hokkaido then fly back to Tokyo.

What will our best options be in terms of JR Passes and other tickets required to travel between these cities?

Thank you in advance for your assistance with this.

– Bec

The Japan Rail Pass will get your whole trip covered:

– Transfer from main airports to city centers (Narita Express to central Tokyo, as you have already learned in this article you are commenting). – Transportation within Tokyo, included lines are the Yamanote Line , the Keihin-Tohoku Line , the Rapid Chuo Line, the local Chuo-Sobu line and other metropolitan lines that circulate on the outskirts of the city such as the JR Keiyo, Musashi, Nambu and Yokohama lines. – The journey from Tokyo to Mount Fuji via Gotemba is almost fully covered. – Transportation between Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka is fully covered in the Hikari train in the Tokaido line. – To get from Kyoto to Nara , take the Miyakoji Rapid Train, on the JR Nara line to JR Nara Station. – When traveling from Osaka to Kobe using the JR Pass, you may take the Sanyo Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka Station to Shin-Kobe Station. – To get to Naoshima from Osaka, take the JR Sanyo Shinkansen Line from Shin-Osaka station to Okayama using either the Sakura or Hikari train. – To get to Hiroshima , you will just need to take the Sanyo Shinkansen line (westbound, Hikari trains). Once you are there we recommend you not to miss Miyajima . – The Kyushu Shinkansen will take you all the way to Nagasaki.

It looks like you intend to make the last part of your trip by plane but please note that should you have not yet booked your flights, the Japan Rail Pass may be a cost-effective alternative since for example Sapporo area is well covered by it.

Thank you very much for the detailed response!

I have seen an alternate route to Fuji-Q Highland from Shinjuku Station to Otsuki Station then change for the Fuji Express Line to Fuji-Q Highland.

Is the Fuji Express line covered by the JR Pass or is that something I can purchase on the day?

Also, when travelling by shinkansen, are the tickets fully covered by the JR Pass? I have seen ticket prices listed from $170 (AUD) from Shinagawa to Kyoto and wasn’t sure if that was an addition to the 21 day JR Pass we are hoping to purchase.

What is the main difference between the ‘Green Pass’ and the basic JR Pass – does it cover more lines or faster trains?

Thank you again for all of your advice!

The Fujikyu Line (Fuji Express) is a private railway line, so the Japan Rail Pass cannot be used for this line. However you will be able to use your pass to travel from Shinjuku Station to Otsuki Station in the JR Chuo Main Line.

The JR Pass is valid on the Kodama, Hikari and Sakura types of Shinkansen at no additional cost, but is not valid on the Nozomi and Mizuho classes. The Hikari and Sakura bullet trains reach the same top speed as the Nozomi and Mizuho trains, cover the same routes and use the same type of actual train, but have more stops along each route.

The Green Pass stands for a First class ticket, which allows you to access the most comfortable and spacious seating areas on all Shinkansen bullet trains and certain fast lines. The Green Pass guarantees a spacious and comfortable seat in the air conditioned cars of all the JR lines. The only thing you need to do is book your seat for free.

We hope you have an amazing time in Japan!

I may have counted the total days wrong for our trip.

Will we be covered by the 21 day JR pass if we fly into Narita on April 23rd and leave Narita on May 14th?

What is our best option if we are not covered?

The Japan Rail Pass validity period is calculated in days, not in hours. Therefore, if you have purchased a 21-day pass and your activation date (when you first use the pass) is the 23rd of April, the exact expiration time will be midnight on May 13.

Thanks for your prompt response.

What is our best option if we have no valid JR Pass on our last day?

I am traveling to Japan and arriving in Narita next month. We are only staying 8 days. We are traveling from Tokyo>Osaka_Ikeda>Osaka>Kyoto>Tokyo. Is it cheaper to purchase a one way N’Ex ticket to go to Shinjuku from Narita airport instead of purchasing the 14 day JR rail pass? We plan to activate the JR rail pass when we go to Osaka. Also, what route would we take to go to Osaka_Ikeda (Cupnoodle museum)?

Please note Narita Express ticket will only cover your N’EX trip while the Japan Rail Pass is a multi-use all-you-can-ride discounted rail ticket. It gives you unlimited access to all Japan Rail National trains, as well as JR bus services, ferry services, and airport transfers. To travel with your 7-day Japan Rail Pass, means to have the unique opportunity to discover the whole country at a cheaper price than a Tokyo to Kyoto return ticket, on a Shinkansen bullet train .

Dear Sir or Madame, I amd coming to Narita Airport on Feb 10 and leaving from Tokyo by the same airport on Feb 20. I hava a 7-day JR Pass. Is it possible to get a round trip by The Narita Express with it? Thank you in advance

Yes, as specified in this article you are commenting the Narita Express is fully included in the Japan Rail Pas s. You can make as many trips in it while your pass is valid. Please note the Japan Rail Pass validity period is calculated in days, not in hours. Therefore, if you have purchased a 7-day pass and your activation date (when you first use the pass) is the 10th of February, the exact expiration time will be midnight on February 16.

Have an amazing trip!

Hi! I will be going to Japan and stay from March 4-8, basically that’s 5 days. I saw that I can purchase NEX Roundtrip Ticket as our house is in Hatagaya Station, he said we can take train to Shinjuku then take another to Hatagaya using Keio newline. Is this recommended? Is the card valid for 14 days? And unlimited pass to all stations for 2 weeks? Or how does it work? Thank you!

Hi Cathryn!

The N’EX TOKYO Round Trip Ticket allows for round-trip travel in Ordinary Car reserved seats on the Narita Express. You will only be able to make a round trip between Narita Airport and Tokyo . For further details we recommend you to check the official website.

bonjour j’ai acheté le pass national et je voudrais savoir si je peux l’utiliser dans tous les transports de tokyo (metro bus) ?

Please read our dedicated article Getting around Tokyo with the JR Pass: Metro, trains and more for detailed information.

Hello there,

My family of 3 will be traveling to Japan on Mar 31- April 7 and arriving at Narita airport around 9:10 P.M. By the time we get our luggages and pass immigration it would probably be close to 10 pm We are definitely getting a 7 day JR pass. Will there be a train from Narita airport to Tokyo around that time? Please advise! Our itinerary will be 3 nights Tokyo, 3 nights Osaka and will be going to Kyoto from Osaka on a day trip and will go back to Tokyo for 1 last night. Can you please direct us which train to take. We are really afraid of getting lost… Its greatly appreciated and more power to you guys!!! Thanks, NOEL

I am travelling to Japan on April. Please advise does the JR East Pass (Tohoku area) is valid on Narita Express? Or I need to buy a Narita Express round trip ticket as well?

Thanks, Karlo Lau

We are planning a trip from Narita Airport – Tokyo – Kyoto in a stretch to stay in Kyoto for 2 nights, then back to Narita for a conference for 2-3 nights, then to Tokyo for 2 nights before heading back to Narita Airport. Will the 7-day japan rail pass cover these routes from 21-27th of any month? Also, will the rail pass also cover trains to take us from Tokyo station to the Odaiba-Kaihinkoen station so we can visit Tokyo Joypolis?

I’m sorry but I’m really confused about what sort of trains the rail pass actually entitles us to take around Tokyo.

Also, if we purchase the green class rail passes, will that entitle us to the green class tickets for the hiker and kodama from Tokyo – Kyoto – Tokyo, as well as cover the Narita Express from the Narita Airport to Tokyo and back?

Sinec we read you visit Japan to attend a conference first of all it is important you verify you are eligible to use the Japan Rail Pass: remember that the Tourist Visa is the only visa which allows you to obtain and use the Japan Rail Pass .

The Green Pass will grant you access to first class seats on Hikari, Sakura and Tsubame trains on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen and any trains on the Tohoku, Yamagata, Akita, Joetsu and Nagano Shinkansen. So it will cover for the trips between Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka . N’EX also offers Green Car (first class).

Hi, I will be going to tokyo on the 21st of march for 8days, and i m thinking of doing a one day trip to kyoto and one day to mt fuji plus one day disney sea, can jr pass cover this 3 places and if yes ,can advise how to travel there as I am still very confuse with the train system. Lastly, can i use the jr pass in travelling around tokyo as the balance 4days i will be going nearby places of tokyo or do i need to buy a suica card. Thank you in advance and hope to hear from you soon.☺

Yes – the Japan Rail Pass will cover all your day trips as follows:

– To get from Tokyo to Kyoto with the Japan Rail Pass you should take the Shinkansen Hikari train from either Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station in central Tokyo, and arrive at Kyoto Station. – To get from Tokyo to Mount Fuji you may want to take the Gotemba trail: take JR Tokaido line for Kozu from Tokyo Station, using your JR Pass. Once at Kozu (Kanagawa), take the JR Gotemba Line for Numazu and get off at Gotemba station. Once at Gotemba station, take a bus to Subashiri 5th station, the gateway to climbing Mount Fuji (the bus operated by Fujikyu, which is not part of the JR Group and thus thic ticket is the only part of the trip that is not covered by the Japan Rail Pass ). – DisneySea is a twenty-minute walk from Maihama Station, or you can take the Disney Resort Monorail from Maihama to Tokyo Disney Sea Station. Use your JR Pass to travel from Tokyo Station to Maihama Station, on the JR Keiyo line.

While in Tokyo, the JR Pass affords access to five different Tokyo railway lines: the Yamanote Line , the Keihin-Tohoku Line, the Rapid Chuo Line, the local Chuo-Sobu line and other metropolitan lines that circulate on the outskirts of the city such as the JR Keiyo, Musashi, Nambu and Yokohama lines. Should you need to reach any further location not covered by those lines you might be interested in travelling with a prepaid IC card .

Hi, We’re a family of four and are planning for a trip to Japan – Tokyo (4nights) and Osaka (4nights). We will arrive at Narita airport. We’re intending to buy 7-day railpass, however, to get into Shibuya (that’s where we will be staying), do I need to also buy the N’EX Tokyo round trip ? I saw on your website, it mentioned Narita express train to Tokyo is free if you have JR passes ? Also, we would be arriving on the 23th February and will be leaving on the 3rd March, would the 7-day JR pass covered that or do we have to buy additional ticket to Narita airport ? Many Thanks & Kind Regards, Anh

As stated in this article you are commenting, you can ride the Narita Express for free with your Japan Rail Pass .

Regarding the validity of the pass, it is calculated in days. Therefore, if you have purchased a 7-day pass and your activation date (when you first use the pass) is the 23rd of February, the exact expiration time will be midnight on 1st March. Outside this validity window you won’t be entitled to use the pass.

We hope you have an awesome trip.

Hi…do I need to go to JR counter everytime if I am travelling within Tokyo for a ticket even though i have JR pass?

When you travel with a Japan Rail Pass you won’t need to go to the counter everytime you are travelling if you take the included transportation . You will just need to go through the designated entrance and show you pass to the staff.

Hello! Just wondering what the earliest NEX is from Tokyo Station to Narita Terminal 3 will be, we are planning to go to Sapporo during our holiday. Also, are we able to reserve the seat a few days before when we first arrive in Japan? Thank you!

As described in this article, please refer to the JR East schedules page to check the latest schedules from and to Narita Airport. To reserve your seat , please go to any Ticket Office (Midori-no-madoguchi), located in all Japanese train stations. You can reserve your seats in advance as soon as you get to Japan.

Have an awesome trip!

Hello I am going to japan on Jan 19th/2018 . I try to get a around trip ticket from Express train ( Narita to shinjuku) and Shinjuku to Narita 3 days later. The question is: from the way return back to Narita . Please give me time table of Shinjuku station to Narita airport between 9:00am to 11:00 am on Jan 22/20118. I searched online but there are so confusion. Thank you

Please refer to the JR East schedules page to check the latest schedules from and to Narita Airport, as described in this article.

Hello, we are planning to go to the airport from Tokyo station to Narita airport Terminal 3 to catch a flight to Sapporo. Our flight is 9am, what is the earliest NEX we can take that will get us there in time? Where abouts in Tokyo station do we have to go to in order to get to the airport? Thank you!

PS: We will also be travelling from Kanazawa Station to visit the village of Shirakawa-go at night in January. What would be the best way to get there and is it covered by the JR Pass? Thanks

As stated in this article, Narita Express connecta Narita Airport to central Tokyo, making stops at Tokyo and Shibuya stations. Please refer to the JR East schedules page to check the latest schedules from and to Narita Airport.

There are no train services to Shirakawa-go , but the Nohi Bus is available from Takayama. The trip lasts approximately one hour and is not covered by the Japan Rail Pass.

Have a nice trip!

Hi, my family and I are visiting Tokyo for 9 days. We are going to places by Harajuku, Akihabara, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ikebukuro, Tokyo station, and more. I was wondering if it’s really worth it to purchase the 7 day JR Pass.

Also the place we’re staying at is by Akihabara

Hello Crystal,

If you and your family are planning on visiting just Tokyo, it would be avisable to compare prices on Hyperdia , which enables you to precisely plan your trip in Japan. However, getting the Japan Rail Pass will give you more flexibility to make sone day trips from Tokyo by train , since there is a countless number of towns and villages surrounding Tokyo, places that will leave you breathless, places full of history, heritage, and natural beauty, including Nikko, Kamakura, Yokohama and of course, the great Mount Fuji.

Hope this helps

hi how can i go from narita to takayama? from takayama to kyoto?.thanks

Takayama is easy to access using your Japan Rail Pass. If traveling from Tokyo to Takayama, first take the JR Tokaido Shinkansen to Nagoya. Use the Hikari rather than Nozomi trains, as the Nozomi are not covered by the JR Pass. Alternatively, you may take the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Toyama. From either Nagoya or Toyama, take the JR Hida Limited Express to Takayama.

Regarding the itinerary from Narita, should you be at the airport we would recomend you to take the Narita Express to central Tokyo and start your journey from there.

Hi, we are travelling to Japan for 10 days and will arrive at Narita Airport. We plan to travel from Narita airport to kyoto for 3 days, Osaka for 3 days and Tokyo for 4 days. We have plan to purchase a 7 days JR Pass, what would be the recommended activation for the JR Pass?Should we activate on the first day or when we are leaving kyoto? Thanks.

All of the mentioned trips are covered by the Japan Rail Pass. However, you might want to make day trips from Kyoto , visit places nearby Osaka or see places in the Tokyo outskirts . Our best recommendation would be to define the whole itinerary and check which are the individual prices of each trip in Hyperdia and then compare it to the cost of the natoin-wide Japan Rail Pass. Depending on your itinerary even the 14-day Japan Rail Pass might be cost effective!

In any case, all of the mentioned trips can be done using the Japan Rail Pass:

– From Narita Airport you can take the Narita Express as detailed in this article. – To move between Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo you can take either Hikari or Kodama trains in the Tokaido Shinkansen line.

Hi there! I’ve already purchased JR passes for my family. I just wanted to know whether I should make a reservation in advance for the N’EX, or if I could reserve my seats at Narita Airport itself. It’s confusing, because I had read a rule that even if one is travelling on a JR Pass, he/she needs to collect their Reserved Seat Limited-Express Ticket before 9:00 p.m, on the day before departure. Secondly, I wanted to know where I could purchase the Tokyo Subway Passes, heard it’s really economical.

Your response in this regard would be much appreciated.

Best regards, Ramith

All N’EX seat reservations are available for free to any Japan Rail Pass holder who can reserve a seat at any JR ticket office in Narita Airport, before boarding the train and without any additional payment. Please note that passengers with no seat reservations will not be allowed to board any of the N’EX trains.

Hi there, How do you go to Hiroshima from Tokyo using the JR pass? How long is the travel time , because we only plan to go there for a one day trip and plan to go back to Tokyo on the same day.

How about going to Kyoto on one day trip as well? Thanks

Hi Cristina!

You can use your JR Pass to take the Sanyo Shinkansen line’s Hikari bullet train from Tokyo Station to the Shin-Osaka Station. You will then transfer to the Sakura train (on the same line) and arrive in Hiroshima at Hiroshima Station. This trip takes approximately five hours to complete.

Getting from Tokyo to Kyoto with the Japan Rail Pass is easy. You should take the Shinkansen Hikari train from either Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station in central Tokyo, and arrive at Kyoto Station. A standard Tokyo to Kyoto trip with the JR Pass takes close to 1 hour and 40 minutes, taking the Hikari Shinkansen.

Very happy travels!

We are travelling to Japan this Octobe, for six 6 days . If we buy JR Pass, is there an airport bus transfer under JR Pass from Narita to Shinjuku? Second, if we just take NEX thru JR Pass to Shinjuku, is it a long walk from the train station to our Hotel which is Sun Members Tokyo Shinjuku? Also, can we use the JR Pass from Shinjuku to Shibuya? And, can we also use JR pass from Shinjuku to Kyoto and then back ? Lastly, when we travel back to airport from Shinjuku to Narita, can we still use the same pass, as long as it is within the 7 day period from its first used?

Your reply would be very much appreciated.

Best Regards.

Hello Mariz,

Hope you are well. First, N’EX trains take approximately 1 hour to get from and to Tokyo Station (first stop city center), 1 hour and 15 minutes to Shibuya Station and around 1 hour and 20 minutes to Shinjuku Station. Second, the walk from Shinjuku station to your hotel is just 11 minutes away. Also, from Shinjuku to Shibuya you can use the japan rail pass using the Narita Express train again. From Kyoto to Shinjuku station you can use your Japan Rail Pass, but you will have one transfer in Tokyo. You will need to pass through the ordinary and shinkasen ticket gates entering at Kyoto, but at Shinagawa, pass back out the shinkasen gate to get to the Yamanote line (look for the green markings – platform and train). And the Yamanote line is covered by your pass. It is a circle line, and takes about 62 minutes for a round trip, but from Shinagawa the direction (as written on the signs) will be for Osaki, Shibuya and Shinjuku Last, yes, you will be able to use the same pass to go back to the airport, as long as it is within the 7 day period from its first used.

Hope this helps you!

Have a nice trip

Hi, I am coming to Tokyo Narita on 11/17/17 at around 330pm, do you think it is possible for me to catch the 6pm train to Osaka? I am planning to stay in Osaka for 3 days then go back to Tokyo for 4 days then leave for VN. JR pass would be perfect for my trip right? I want to also do a day trip to Kyoto.

Hello Thien,

The Narita Express – also known as N’EX – is the most convenient Tokyo city transfer from and to Narita International Airport, which hosts most of the overseas flights to Japan. N’EX trains take approximately 1 hour to get from and to Tokyo Station (first stop city center), 1 hour and 15 minutes to Shibuya Station and around 1 hour and 20 minutes to Shinjuku Station. The service operates 27 trains daily, every 30 minutes. Therefore, it shouldn´t be any problem for you to catch the train to Osaka at 6 pm.

According to your itinerary, the best option for you is to buy a 7 days Japan Rail Pass, since traveling on bullet train twice makes this pass worth and a good value for money.

Hope this helps 🙂

28th Sept 2017 Hi Sir, Can I ride on the NEX on the 9th Oct 2017, if my activation validity of the 7 days JR Pass starts from the 11th Oct 2017? Thank you.

I am afraid you can´t do so. Your Japan Rail Pass will start working for 7 consecutive days, once you active it. Therefore, you won´t be able to use it before the activation date. Also, keep in mind that once you purchase your JR Voucher, you cannot add extra days. And once you exchange it for the for the actual JR Pass and activate it, you cannot modify its validity period in any way. Check out our web with all the information about using your JR Pass

Hi We have purchased a 7 day JR pass for our 10 day stay during which we will spend 4 nights in Tokyo, 4 nights in Osaka and 2 nights in Tokyo before flying out from Narita on 22 October. Please can you clarify that we will only be able to ride the N’Ex for free on our outward bound journey to Narita? We don’t plan on on activating our pass until our 3rd day (15 October) in Tokyo before taking the Shinkansen to Osaka on the 16 October. Thanks in advance!

You will only be entitled to use the Narita Express at no additional cost while your Japan Rail Pass is valid. All trips you make before its activation date will have to be paid a part.

Hi! If we purchase the JR Pass and have it activated upon our arrival in Narita Airport, can we use it right away to ride the Narita Express?

Yes, you can do it – just make sure to check the Exchange Offices opening hours as well as Sale Points opening hours.

Hi, So I can use the JR pass from Tokyo to Mt Fuji?!

And the pass, is it only available in the airport? Im confused now coz I read that we need to have it before arriving in JPN (Narita).

Yes – you can use the Japan Rail Pass to travel from Tokyo to Mount Fuji . You will just need to take JR Tokaido line for Kozu from Tokyo Station, using your JR Pass. Once at Kozu (Kanagawa), take the JR Gotemba Line for Numazu and get off at Gotemba Station.

Regarding on where to purchase the Japan Rail Pass, it is always adviceable to purchase it online from any official vendor like this one . Although it is possible to purchase it at certain points of Japan, its cost is higher and can only be paid in yens.

Hi, we are going Japan on 17-Oct, will arrive at Narita Airport 0845hrs and transit to Osaka through Haneda Airport. We will only have 4hr30min for this transferring between Narita-Haneda Airport; include immigration clearance and check-in luggage at Haneda Airport. We are planned to get Japan Rail Pass. Please advise the safer way of this transfer between Narita-Haneda Airport by using Japan Rail Pass.

Once you land at Narita Airport, you will be able to use your Japan Rail Pass in Narita Express. It will take you straight to Hamamatsucho in a little more than 1 hour, where you will also be entitled to take the Tokyo Monorail to Haneda Airport at no additional cost. Tokyo Monorail will take around 13 minutes.

Please remember you will need to activate your Japan Rail Pass upon arrival at Japan (this can be easily done at Narita Airport).

I am travelling to Japan next month. Could you please let me know if JR Tokyo Wide Pass is valid on Narita Express?

Thanks, Anna

Hi Anna! Yes, it is valid on the Narita Express .

Hello, I will stay for 9 days and I will get 7 days JRP, the N’EX that is included is posible the lata day that I will be in Japan or it is only valid until 7 day like the JRP?

You can take the N’EX every day you want, but you will also be entitled to do it at no additional cost during the validity period of your Japan Rail Pass (during the 7 days it is active). Should you use it out of this scope of time, you would have to pay individual tickets for it.

Hi, we are going to Tokyo on the 4th Nov and departing 14th Nov and we are travelling with 4 adults, 5 children and 1 infant. Our itiniery is a bit messed up, however we would like to plan our trip as follow; Arrive at Narita Airport 3pm and travel directly to Osaka for 7 days 6 nights From Osaka we would like to take day trip to Kyoto and other surrounding and then back to Tokyo for 3nights before flying out via Narita Airport. Can you please help whether it’s worth purchasing 7 or 14 days JR Railway pass? And is their a direct Shinkansens line that will take us from Narita Airport to Osaka Dotonbori? Can you please help as i am so confuse.

We suggest you purchase the 14-day JR Pass, this way it covers all of your trip especially since you will be moving around quite a lot. It includes both Narita Express transfers from and to Narita Airport and transportation in Osaka and Tokyo with the Jr lines. There is no direct Shinkansen line from Narita Airport to Osaka Dotonbori. However, there are connecting lines. The Narita Express will take you to Tokyo central station, then you have to take the Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka station. Then to get to Namba you can take the direct Midosuji Line, but this is not covered by the JR Pass, so you would have to buy a specific ticket. If you want to use the JR line to get to Namba then we suggest you check out our article Getting around Osaka that explains everything in detail. 🙂

Hi im going tokyo from 29 march 2018 – 6 march 2018, my flight abit weird due to arrival in narita airport and going back home from haneda, originally plan is tokyo > osaka > kyoto > nara > mt fuji and some of the famous place that havent figure out..im very confuse about jr pass..not so sure want to buy JR pass or not…my trip is about 9d8n..the first day reach tokyo is already 5:30pm and would like to ask about JR pass can use in Tokyo metro? please give me some advice thank you very much!

The Japan Rail Pass will fully cover the trips you mention. In case you decided to travel with it we would recommend you to purchase it online at http://www.jrailpass.com .

– From Narita Airport to central Tokyo you can take the Narita Express. In this article you will find all the details on how to get it and where to get off. – While in Tokyo you can use 5 JR lines to move within the city: the Yamanote Line , the Keihin-Tohoku Line, the Rapid Chuo Line, the local Chuo-Sobu Line and other metropolitan lines that circulate on the outskirts of the city such as the JR Keiyo, Musashi, Nambu and Yokohama lines. – Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka are connected with by the Tokaido Shinkansen line, included with the Japan Rail Pass. You can make as many trips as you want at no additional charge in this line. – In order to get from Kyoto to Nara , begin at Kyoto Station. Take the Miyakoji Rapid Train, on the JR Nara line to JR Nara Station. The rapid trains run twice per hour, and the 45-minute trip is covered by your JR Pass. – To go to Mount Fuji you can take the Kodama Shinkansen at Kyoto Station.

Hi do you have 10 days option? I’m will be arrive Tokyo on 18 Nov and travelling to kyoto on 19 Nov for 2 days, Osaka on 21 Nov for 3 days therefore i need travel back to Tokyo by 24 of Nov. If i get the 7 days JR Pass and activate on 18 Nov, does it mean i still able to use it on 24 Nov travel from Osaka back to Tokyo?

A Japan Rail Pass can be valid for either 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days, no other options are available.

The Japan Rail Pass validity period is calculated in days, not in hours. Therefore, if you have purchased a 7-day pass and your activation date (when you first use the pass) is the 18th of November, the exact expiration time will be midnight on November 14th to travel from Osaka to Tokyo . Your JR Pass will be valid until the end of the journey.

Narita Airport

Tokyo has two airports , Narita International Airport (c`, Narita Kūkō, NRT), which handles a large number of international flights as well as domestic and international flights by many low-budget airlines, and the more centrally located Haneda Airport (HND), which handles the city's main share of domestic traffic and an increasing number of international flights.

Narita Airport (formerly also known as New Tokyo International Airport) is located in the city of Narita in Chiba Prefecture , about 60 kilometers outside of Tokyo . It consists of three terminal buildings: terminal 1, terminal 2 and terminal 3. Terminal 1 and 2 each have a railway station in their respective basements. Terminal 3 serves low-budget airlines and is connected with terminal 2 by a pedestrian walkway. Free shuttle buses operate between all three terminals.

Getting to Narita Airport

There are departures every 30 to 60 minutes. The NEX Tokyo Round Trip Ticket for 5000 yen provides foreign travelers with a discounted round trip from the airport into Tokyo and back within a 2-week period.

There are connections every 20-40 minutes. If purchased in advance online or via a travel agent outside of Japan, foreign tourists can ride the Skyliner for just 2310 yen.

Limousine buses to Tokyo Station depart Narita Airport about hourly. The one way journey takes about 100 minutes and costs 3100 yen. In addition, there are direct limousine bus connections to several major hotels in the Tokyo Station area. A special round trip ticket for only 4500 yen is available to foreign tourists exclusively. It is possible to purchase tickets online via Klook .
