Tom Cruise’s incredible watch collection often sneaks into his movies

Tom Cruise's watch collection, featured image

Tom Cruise is known for his impressive on-screen stunts and the fact that he still looks 38 despite being weeks away from his 61st birthday.

Mind you, there’s something else Cruise doesn’t get enough recognition for: his watch collection.

From de rigueur Rolex best-sellers to the famous Top Gun watch, there are some proper gems here.

Let’s have a look at Tom Cruise’s watch collection.

5. Tudor Heritage Chrono from Mission Impossible – $4,500

Tom Cruise's watch collection, Tom Cruise wearing a Tudor Heritage Chrono in Ghost Protocol

READ MORE: T om Cruise accepts an award while flying a WW2 fighter plane

Ethan Hunt is set to return to screen for one final mission in the upcoming movie Dead Reckoning, a two-part finale to the Mission: Impossible saga.

Tom Cruise will of course reprise his role as Hunt, along with Ving Rhames (Luther) and Simon Pegg (Benji Dunn).

We don’t know what kind of watch Hunt will be wearing in the new film, but there’s one timepiece from the other Mission: Impossible movies that stands out.

Tom Cruise's watch collection, Tudor Heritage Chrono

It’s the Tudor Heritage Chrono, a modern chronograph designed to give off vintage-y vibes.

Cruise / Hunt wore this watch in the 2011 film Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

The watch isn’t cheap, but perhaps less expensive than you think, it’ll ‘only’ set you back $4,500.

4. IWC Mark XV from Vanilla Sky – $6,000

Tom Cruise's watch collection, Tom Cruise's IWC in Vanilla Sky

Tom Cruise plays a careless, carefree and callous womanizer in the 2001 psychological thriller Vanilla Sky.

However, his character’s life goes upside down when a car crash nearly kills him.

In the film, Cruise’s character David Aames wears an IWC Mark XV and drives a vintage Ford Mustang.

Tom Cruise's watch collection, Tom Cruise's IWC in Vanilla Sky

What do these things have in common? They’re both more expensive than you might think.

This IWC timepiece was pricey then, and it’s pricey now, with a market value north of $6,000.

3. Omega SeaMaster Chronograph from War of Worlds – $7,000

In the 2005 film War of Worlds, Tom Cruise plays Ray Ferrier, a divorced crane operator with two children that don’t really like him.

However, Ray goes from deadbeat dad to hero when Earth is invaded by tripod-shaped aliens.

Needless to say, Ray saves the day, and his family, and they lived happily ever after.

Tom Cruise's watch collection, War of Worlds

The film was a box office success and it features a cool and yet somehow underrated watch.

Some of us may be familiar with the Omega Seamaster, but not this model.

In the film, Ray / Tom Cruise wears a vintage cal 321 Seamaster Chronograph, which was relatively inexpensive back then.

Mind you, Cruise couldn’t get away with wearing this exact watch if he played a similar role today because the Seamaster 321 is worth around $5,000 – $6,000 today.

Not really a crane operator watch, is it?

2. Gold Rolex Day-Date from Rain Main – $8,500

Tom Cruise watch collection, Rolex Day-Date from Rain Man

Tom Cruise starred alongside Dustin Hoffman and Valeria Golino in the 1988 Oscar-winning movie Rain Man.

In the film, Cruise’s character Charlie Babbitt is a well-off LA yuppie and he wears a watch that perfectly matches his character’s personality.

Tom Cruise watch collection, Rolex Day-Date in Rain Man

The watch in question is a gold Rolex Day-Date which, as you can probably imagine, costs a pretty penny.

Prices vary significantly depending on size and model year but, generally speaking, you can’t find one for under $8,500.

1. Orfina Porsche Design from Top Gun – $9,650

Tom Cruise watch collection, Cruise and Kilmer in Top Gun

This is by far and away the most famous watch ever worn by Tom Cruise in one of his movie.

The 60-year-old actor gave this watch icon status after wearing it in the 1986 film Top Gun.

Made by Porsche Design in partnership with Swiss watchmaker Orfina, this military-style chronograph became synonymous with the Top Gun saga.

Tom Cruise's watch collection, Porsche Design from Top Gun

The price reflects that.

The watch is quite rare and difficult to find, and if you want a period-correct Orfina Porsche Design in good condition, be prepared to spend at least $6,000-$6,500.

But hold on because this conversation is about to become even more expensive.

Porsche released a limited-edition reissue that Tom Cruise wore in the 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick.

This one is priced at $7,700.

tom cruise favourite watch

The bad news is it is no longer available and collectors aren’t selling theirs.

So your only option is to buy the Porsche Design Chronograph 1.

It looks exactly the same except for the hour markers, but it costs even more money.

This one will set you back $9,650 .

Tom Cruise’s $160,000 Vacheron Constantin Proves His Taste In Watches Is Elite

Tom Cruise’s $160,000 Vacheron Constantin Proves His Taste In Watches Is Elite

Nick Kenyon

After years of delays, the premiere for Top Gun: Maverick finally went ahead recently, featuring a red carpet filled with Hollywood’s who’s who. Naturally, as the star of the much-anticipated follow-up film, Tom Cruise was dressed in his black-tie best, but the timepiece on his wrist got our attention as one of the most impressive watches at the premiere.

The watch in question was the sporty and sophisticated Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin in white gold, a timepiece that has gained an enthusiastic following over the last few years. It’s easy to see why this complicated member of the Overseas family is so popular, as a watch that can handle an active lifestyle, but remains comfortably svelte with a case that is remarkably just 8.1mm thick.

The Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin is powered by the calibre 1120 QP/1, an automatic perpetual calendar movement comprised of 274 components, despite being just 4.05mm thick. Ticking away at 19,800vph, it offers a power reserve of 40 hours and won’t need any adjusting until the year 2100.

It’s great to see Tom Cruise back on the red carpet for his antics as a fighter pilot ace, solidifying his position as one of the last great action heroes of his generation. Despite his not insignificant net worth, Tom Cruise isn’t a man that has been well-known for his collection of watches, but with the recent addition of this Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin, that could be set to change.

If you’re keen on your own Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin, it comes with an RRP of $158,000 and is currently available at your nearest Vacheron Constantin boutique.

Tom Cruise's ultra-luxe Rolex GMT is, unsurprisingly, a pilot classic

By Alfred Tong

Tom Cruise's ultraluxe Rolex GMT is unsurprisingly a pilot classic

The age-defying Tom Cruise has a watch collection every bit as timeless as himself. Over the course of the promo run for Top Gun: Maverick he’s stayed true to his make-believe fighter pilot credentials with a series of masculine and robust tool watches such as a steel Rolex Datejust, a somewhat louder Breitling Chronomat (which would not have been out of place in the first Top Gun ), and this week, a classic Rolex GMT with red and blue Pepsi dial, but, get this – in white gold, instead of steel. It’s an unusual remix of the aviation classic which suits a man who probably has every watch he wants and now can branch out into something different.

The original GMT was a game changer for Rolex. Released in 1955 it became the official timepiece of Pan Am pilots who needed a watch that could tell them what time zone such was the immense speed of the new Boeing 367-80 jets they were flying. Rolex’s solution was to add a hand which made one revolution every 24 hours with a blue and red bezel bearing the numbers 1-24 which rotated around the watch face. Not only was this new feature eye-catching enough to check the timezone at a glance, it was also rather stylish.

Alongside a pair of Ray Bans the GMT swiftly became a symbol of a new generation of globetrotting rich people known as the ‘jet set’. Watch 2002's Catch Me If You Can, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a con man pretending to be a Pan Am pilot, to get a sense of the kind of mid-century glamour the GMT evokes.

There are a number of highly luxurious finishes on Tom Cruise ’s white gold remix, not least of which is solid 18k white gold whereas the original was in stainless steel. Let’s not forget that this was originally a ‘tool watch’ as indispensable to a pilot as a slide rule or compass. Nevertheless, for the white gold version, the original anodized aluminium bezel with bakelite numbers has been replaced with the somewhat harder and more luxurious substance called ‘Cerachrom’ a type of ceramic, while the numbers have been coated with platinum. All of which gives the watch a more luxurious and substantial feel than the original, which, of course, is in keeping with the fact that you’ve strapped on a solid chunk of 18K white gold onto your wrist. Apart from that, it’s pretty much the same watch, only slightly nicer and definitely a strong addition to Cruise's collection.

A bit like the man himself, the GMT has remained the same but gotten a little more distinguished and fancier as time goes by.

The Best Watches in Tom Cruise’s Watch Collection From Screen to Red Carpet

Tom Cruise Top Gun Porsche Design Chronograph 1

In researching this article about Tom Cruise’s watch collection, one thing became abundantly clear to me. There is no human being on this planet that commands as much attention. Whether its his latest movie outing like Top Gun Maverick, an appearance at an awards show or some other type of engagement, people want to know what he’s up to. Which means there are a lot of pictures of Cruise out there. What’s particularly amazing is that in the vast majority of them, he’s wearing a different watch – the sheer range and diversity of the timepieces is impressive. He’s no Paul Newman with a diehard attachment to a single model. With that in mind, here are some of the best watches in Tom Cruise’s collection and what he has been spotted with.

Of course, while he does own many watches, some of the pieces he’s most associated with are those that appear on his wrist in the Hollywood blockbusters he’s adored for. From several Mission Impossible outings to Oscar nominated Vanilla Sky, to guilty pleasures like Cocktail, there are a million and one Tom Cruise watches to be spotted – we couldn’t leave them out.

Porsche Design Chronograph 1

Tom Cruise Top Gun Porsche Design Chronograph 1

We’ve got to start with the watch that helped launch Cruise’s career, the Porsche Design Chronograph 1 from the Top Gun franchise. The original 1986 film is an absolute classic of high octane action and the sequel, made 36 years later, was undoubtedly the best film of 2022. In an insane (and awesome) piece of watch continuity, in both films Cruise wears the exact same Chronograph 1 with its PVD case and ultra-legible display. Admittedly, Cruise is only a temporary custodian of the watch as it actually belongs to the films’ producer, Jerry Bruckheimer.

Rolex Air-King

Tom Cruise Rolex Air King

Keeping with the theme of watches worn on the big screen, in 1988’s Cocktail Cruise can be seen wearing an incredibly lovely Rolex Air-King with silver dial. If you’re unfamiliar with the film, it’s probably best to keep it that way, it’s not one of Cruise’s best – you can read our full thoughts on the Raspberry winning movie here . However, if you can get past the plot, the Rolex Air-King is truly lovely, especially when you consider that in the 80s the name Rolex was a fair bit more prestigious than it is today.

IWC Mark XV

Vanilla Sky (2001) IWC Pilot’s Watch Mark XV

From Tom Cruise’s worst film to his trippiest: 2001’s Vanilla Sky . The Oscar nominated film revolves around concepts about life, existence and art, which makes the inclusion of an IWC Mark XV pilot watch pretty jarring. The Mark XV is a watch grounded in functionality and purity of design with a military style display in black and white and a 38mm stainless steel case. It’s a watch at odds with the high-falutin concepts of the film, which somehow makes its presence all the more impactful. It’s not the only IWC he sports in a film either, as he wears the Ingenieur automatic in 2004’s Collateral.

Cartier Santos de Cartier

Cartier Santos de Cartier

This one is a given considering the number of red carpets Tom Cruise has walked in his lifetime. Cartier are renowned for being the most popular brand among actors for premiers, awards shows and more. However, while we often think of the Cartier Tank, Cruise opts for its larger, sportier cousin the Santos de Cartier. With its bold, square design and thick bezel, it combines the best of the Sports Luxe aesthetic with Cartier’s traditional attention to detail and Art Deco styling. The silver dial option at the medium sizing as worn by Cruise is particularly nice.

Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin

Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra Thin

So far, while each of the watches we’ve had a look at are each unique and distinct, they’ve all had something in common – a tendency towards functionality and sportiness. The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin that Cruise wore to last year’s Cannes Film Festival is the first piece of major haute horology we’re taking a look at. It has a 41.5mm white gold case with a rich blue dial featuring hours, minutes, day, date, months, moonphase and leap years, all powered by the Calibre 1120 QP/1, which won’t need adjusting until the year 2100, if kept wound.

Rolex Daytona Ref. 1166500LN

Tom Cruise Rolex Daytona Ref. 1166500LN

One of the most famous watches in his collection is the Rolex Daytona Ref. 1166500LN. You know the one. With its 40mm Oystersteel case, a black cerachrom bezel and a white dial featuring black subdial accents – not quite a panda display, but not far from it either – it’s one of the most sought-after Rolexes to have been released in the last decade. Perhaps Tom Cruise isn’t so different to Paul Newman as we first posited.

Bremont ALT1-C

Tom Cruise Bremont ALT1 C

Proving that his love of watches expands beyond the big names of Swiss watchmaking, Cruise has also been clocked sporting watches from brands that aren’t quite so well known outside of watch circles. Case in point he has a Bremont ALT1-C, an aviation chronograph from a British brand specialising in pilot’s watches. It has a 43mm diameter case in stainless steel and houses the Calibre 13 1/4”’ BE-50AE automatic (base ETA 7750), which has a 42-hour power reserve.

At a price of just £5,295 compared to some of the £100,000+ watches in his collection, it shows that Tom Cruise’s interest in watches is genuine and goes beyond the pieces with the biggest clout.

Panerai Luminor Marina PAM00299

Tom Cruise Panerai Luminor Marina PAM00299

Panerais have a reputation for being particularly large, making them a favourite of larger men who live up to its size. Cruise proves that this isn’t always the case because despite being on the shorter side, the Luminor Marina looks perfectly at home on his wrist. It’s also interesting because the Panerai is one of the few dive watches in his collection, evidently, he prefers tool watches designed for the skies rather than the seas.

And the Rest of Them

Tom Cruise Rolex Rain Man

Rain Man: Rolex Yellow Gold Day Date

While on screen Tom Cruise is as much of an action hero as he always has been, he’s actually 60 years old, meaning he’s been in the industry for a long, long time. There are simply too many films, red carpets and photoshoots to cover every single watch he’s worn across a well-lived life.

Some stand outs include a Cartier Calibre de Cartier Chronograph, a Tudor Heritage Chronograph (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol), a Graham Chronodiver Chronograph, as well as a half-dozen more Rolexes like the GMT Master II, Sky-Dweller, Datejust and the Day-Date (Rain Man). And there are still more I could mention like the Jacob & Co. Epic II Chronograph, Tag Heuer S/EL Quartz Chrono (Jerry Maguire) or Casio G-Shock W-5300 (Mission Impossible).

Quite the collection. I am surprised there wasn’t any mention of his many Breitling pieces. The Sky-Dweller is probably my favorite piece out of all the ones mentioned here along with the IWC.

Tom Cruise Watch Collection Shows He Has Good Taste

Ivan Fatoni

Tom Cruise is an American actor well-known for his roles in movies from the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s as well as his famous relationship with Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes.

He became interested in acting while still in high school, and his breakout performances in Risky Business and Top Gun catapulted him to stardom. Later, Cruise received praise for his performance in the critically acclaimed movie Jerry Maguire and the Mission: Impossible series. Now, he has become one of the highest-paid movie stars .

Tom Cruise is not only a very successful actor and producer but also a watch collector and connoisseur, which is a noteworthy addition to his list of accomplishments.

Let's find out some luxury timepieces in Tom Cruise watch collection.

In the recent movie Top Gun: Maverick, Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, played by Tom Cruise, was spotted wearing the new Porsche Design Chronograph 1 inspired by the all-black 1972 watch. The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 was the first watch with a black PVD coating, originally launched in 1972. Its retail price is $7,700. In the same movie, actress Jennifer Connelly, who plays Penny Benjamin as the love interest of Captain Maverick, was spotted wearing a Rolex Explorer 1 ref.1016. The market price is around $21,000.

Tom Cruise Watch Collection - Cartier Chronograph W7100045

When promoting his new movie 'Top Gun: Maverick' in South Korea, he was spotted wearing his boldly masculine Cartier Chronograph watch in stainless steel. With that familiar oversized XII Roman numeral stamping Cartier's instantly recognizable style on the dial, the design captures the sporty elegance of the Calibre de Cartier line, with subtly placed sub-dials at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock, and a similarly restrained calendar aperture at 6 o'clock.

The hourly and minute markers are formed like enormous swords and are made of black oxidized steel with a luminous coating. The chronograph counter indicators and the middle second hand are dark, without lume.

Market price: ~$8,000.

Tom Cruise Watch Collection - Cartier Santos (large) WSSA0018

Tom Cruise Watch Collection - Cartier Santos (large) WSSA0018

Tom Cruise Watch Collection - Cartier Santos (large) WSSA0018

Still promoting his new movie in South Korea in June 2022, Cruise was spotted wearing his other Cartier watch, the classic Santos in stainless steel. The watch matches the occasion of promoting a movie about aviation. The Santos was one of the world’s first wristwatches, invented at the behest of the pilot Alberto Santos Dumont.

Although I would personally like the more conventional medium size, Tom was seen wearing the large model. However, it has the benefit of a date complication, and every watch he has been seen wearing has some variation of this complication. He can switch between the bracelet and the supplied leather strap whenever he wants thanks to the Santos de Cartier's adjustable strap system, which is a noteworthy benefit over his Datejust.

So, one Cartier seems not to be enough for him😆 Retail price is $8,200.

Tom Cruise Watch Collection - Jacob & Co. Epic II chronograph

The highest-paid movie star also owns a Jacob and Co. timepiece. As we can see in the picture, he wears a limited 47mm Jacob and Co. Epic II Chronograph in stainless steel with a chronograph dial that features a shock-resistant quartz movement.

The black and silver dial has 6 multi-tiered layers that are made from carbon and is furthermore signed with the classic Jacob & Co signature.

Market price is around $12,000.

In September 2022, Cruise was seen d wearing one of the most sought-after Rolex watches, the Daytona ‘Panda’ 116500LN in stainless steel with a white dial. This version has been introduced in 2016, and it features a black cerachrom bezel with a white tachymetric scale.

Retail price: $14,300.

Tom Cruise Watch Collection - Rolex Sky-Dweller 326934

Tom Cruise Watch Collection - Rolex Sky-Dweller 326934

Tom Cruise Watch Collection - Rolex Sky-Dweller 32693

When in London in July 2022, he was spotted wearing a 42 mm Rolex Sky-Dweller 326934 in oystersteel and white gold featuring a bright black dial on an oyster bracelet.

The characteristics of the Sky-Dweller are the second time zone display on an off-center disc on the dial and its setting system, which uses the rotatable ring command bezel. This is a unique function for a Rolex.

While the GMT-Master was designed for pilots, Rolex’s Sky-Dweller was created for global travelers. Rolex had the remarkable chance to develop the Sky-Dweller beyond consideration for historical background or legacy design linkages. As a result, it produced something wholly fresh and distinctive for the company.

The Sky-fluted Dweller’s bezel, often called the “Ring Command” bezel, enables the user to choose whichever feature to set up. By turning the winding crown, the user can adjust the month and date, referencing time and local time according to where the bezel is located.

Market price is around $25,000.

Tom Cruise Watch Collection - Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin 4300V/120G-B945

Tom Cruise Watch Collection - Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin 4300V/120G-B945

He was spotted wearing the white gold Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin with a blue dial while at the 75th annual Cannes Film Festival at Palais des Festivals.

This caliber joins the complexity of a perpetual calendar with the elegance of ultra-slim design. At just 4.05 millimeters thick, this exceptional movement is one of the thinnest on the market. Market price is ~$102,000.

During his night out with Jeff Bezos in July 2022, he was spotted wearing a Rolex GMT-Master II 'Pepsi' 126719BLRO in white gold with a blue dial.

Introduced at BaselWorld 2018 the blue dial is paired with the classic two-colour cerachrom bezel insert in red and blue ceramic. The case is fitted with an oyster bracelet. Retail price: $ 39,340.00 Market price: $ 50,000.00

Tom Cruise Watch Collection - Bremont ALT1 C

Tom Cruise Watch Collection - Bremont ALT1 C

In the pictures, he wears a Bremont ALT1-C. Few people are aware of the fact that Tom Cruise has owned and piloted several aircraft. Given that Bremont was founded by two former aviation designers and this is obviously reflected in their work, it makes sense that a relatively new watch company would catch an actor's eye. A dial on the ALT1-C chronometer resembles the instrumentation of vintage airplane models.

Retail price: $5,995.

Some guys have it all. The tier-one Hollywood career, the cars, the homes, the watches, and someone they love to share it all with. And then there’s Tom Cruise who, after Shakira reportedly rebuffed his advances, just has everything else, including this gorgeous Rolex Daytona with a meteorite dial.

LONDON ENGLAND JUNE 14 Tom Cruise seen leaving Dolby Screening Room London Soho on June 14 2023 in London England.

The Rolex Daytona stays in the news. Just last weekend, two pieces that belonged to Paul Newman each sold for over a million dollars . On Monday, the Crown announced a special-edition of the piece in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race . Cruise’s edition is pretty special in its own right. While nearly every version of the Daytona flies off the shelf now, trying to find this one at retail would truly be an… impossible mission. (Sorry.)

This version of the grail watch is outfitted with a dial made of meteorite—as in legit space rock. Rolex sources its extraterrestrial junk from the Gibeon meteorite, which crashed in Namibia in prehistoric times. Now, that slice of meteor is elevating one of the hottest watches in the world. This baby retails for $34,050. Not a bad trajectory for a rock, which was once hurtling through space and now gets to spend its life on the wrist of a real star. (I have a sickness.)

In my opinion, this is the best of the three meteorite-dial Daytonas that were released in 2021. The silvery meteorite and black subdials makes it feel like a space-age version of the beloved white-and-black “Panda” dial.

MANCHESTER ENGLAND JUNE 12 Erling Haaland of Manchester City celebrates with teammates on a stage in St Peter's Square...

It was a good week for championship parades, which means it was a good week for watches. Breitling is best known for its purpose-built pilot watches, but the brand also knows how to go big design-wise. (Its salmon-dial B25 Datora is a personal favorite .) In 1943, the founder’s grandson, Willy Breitling, introduced a luxury collection called Breitling Premier. This watch debuted last year as part of a tribute to the founding of that upscale line. The three models in the collection are each named for a Breitling family member. Manchester City striker Haaland’s piece, with its platinum case and navy blue dial, is named after Willy.

DENVER CO JUNE 15 Ish Smith of the Denver Nuggets runs the streets like a wild man on fire during the team's...

The coolest watch at the Denver Nuggets championship parade? No doubt this G-Shock made in collaboration with Supreme and North Face. About three years ago, Supreme began bulking up its watch offerings with limited-edition pieces from Jacob & Co . I’ve always considered that the moment that streetwear culture and watches merged onto parallel paths. It was also the moment that watches became such a big deal that they could no longer be ignored by the buzziest brands in the world. This snow-white G-Shock comes with the ultimate hype signifier (in certain parts of lower Manhattan) across the band: the red Supreme box logo. Hat tip to Nick Gould for the spot.

HOLLYWOOD CALIFORNIA JUNE 14 Mads Mikkelsen attends the Los Angeles Premiere of LucasFilms' Indiana Jones and the Dial...

The Alpine Eagle is Chopard’s entry in the world of sport watches and it really leans into that persona here. This version of the AE comes on a rubber strap and is equipped with a chronograph, presumably for timing Mikkelsen’s daring escapes from crumbling caves in the new Indiana Jones movie. Who’s to say this isn’t the real Dial of Destiny ?

PARIS FRANCE JUNE 11 Tom Brady watches on from the crowd during the Men's Singles Final match between Novak Djokovic of...

Brady has been flexing the full breadth of his watch collection lately. He whipped out this rare Day-Date with an “Arabic” dial for the French Open. Read all about it here.

Tom Cruise’s 10 Best Movies Ranked

Top Gun: Maverick

The ‘ Tom Cruise movie’ might as well be its own genre. When you sit down to watch a Tom Cruise film, there are things you know you’ll see: Running, really fast? Check. A performance of magnetic intensity? Check. Feats of physical endurance and stunt-based spectacle? Mostly, check. Through the years, Cruise has proved that there are few vehicles or buildings he won’t cling to or jump from; no skill he can’t master to showcase on screen; no story he can’t hone into its most crowd-pleasing shape. There’s a reason he’s still one of Hollywood’s biggest stars and made Empire 's list of the 50 Greatest Actors of all time: the man makes amazing movies.

He’s also had a fascinating career – one that began with a series of roles that dialled into his charisma and confidence as an upstart, before moving into more nuanced character dramas, and then into blockbuster spectacle. And through all those career modes, there’s a sense of sincerity in the stories being told and the characters being brought to life – one that, today, finds him pushing the limits of on-screen action further than most thought possible. Empire ’s ranking of the 10 best Tom Cruise movies spans his entire career – early works, curiosities, all-time American classics, and pulse-pounding adventures – going (spoiler alert!) right up to the thrilling, nostalgic, and emotional Top Gun: Maverick . The highway to the danger zone begins here…

Tom Cruise's 10 Best Movies Ranked

10) Mission: Impossible

10) Mission: Impossible

When Brian De Palma first brought '60s spy series Mission: Impossible to the big screen in the mid-'90s (with Cruise producing as well as starring), it wasn't yet an action juggernaut – the height of spectacle here is an exploding fish tank, or the helicopter-in-a-train-tunnel chase (which perhaps began Cruise's fondness for clinging to speeding vehicles). But the DNA of the ultimate Tom Cruise franchise all comes from this first entry. There's the twisty, double-triple-crossing plot which turned memories of the original show upside down. There are rubber mask rug-pulls. There's that iconic lit-fuse title sequence and theme tune. And at the centre of it all is Cruise's Ethan Hunt, perpetually on the backfoot, barely surviving near-impossible predicaments by the skin of his teeth. Even back in '96, the Mission movies were all about breathless setpieces – though at that point, they were more about beads of sweat pooling on Hunt's forehead while he dangles in a temperature-controlled computer vault, than strapping himself to an aeroplane while it takes off.

Minority Report

9) Minority Report

If you know someone's about to commit a crime, can you punish them before they do it? That's the knotty question at the heart of Minority Report , which saw Cruise team up with the one and only Steven Spielberg for a gritty, noirish thriller with a lot on its mind. Cruise is John Anderton, an officer in the Pre-Crime unit of 2054, which uses the visions of three psychic siblings (the 'precogs') to proudly reduce the murder rate in Washington DC to zero. But when his own face comes up as the unit's next criminal to catch, it throws the entire system – and Anderton's beliefs around it – into question. This meeting of legendary cinematic minds produced something darker and more dystopian than you might expect, but Cruise is on impeccable screen-swiping form as an action hero, a care-taker for precog Agatha ( Samantha Morton ), and a man whose entire world-view is shattering around him, desperate to clear his name. Plus, we get to see him have eyeball surgery. Feast your illegally transplanted retinas on that.

The Color Of Money

8) The Color Of Money

Released in the same year as the original Top Gun , this lesser-known Martin Scorsese banger is absolutely the former's equal in displaying the young Cruise's prodigious talent, captivating charisma, and cocksure confidence. His pool-hall wizard Vince (so self-adoring that he literally walks around in a t-shirt with his own name on it) simply cannot help showing off, broadcasting his considerable skills with a cue for all to see – even if it means imploding the hustling scheme he's cooked up with Paul Newman 's veteran Fast Eddie. (This is a legacy sequel before they were a thing, with Newman reprising his role from 1961's The Hustler .) The pool sequences are electrifying and all-out Scorsese cinematic – and an early example of Cruise dedicating himself to learning new skills for his art, clearly potting all the balls himself in extended takes – but the character drama is just as captivating, with Vince stepping into his power, Eddie facing his own decline, and the hustler becoming the hustled.

Collateral

7) Collateral

Silver-haired, super-focused, and stalking through the shadows of an LA night, Cruise's Vincent (we never learn his last name) is one of the actor's great assholes – a tunnel-visioned assassin who drags Jamie Foxx 's reluctant and goodnatured cabbie, Max, into a night of murderous mayhem, Michael Mann -style. Sleek and cool but also sociopathic and callous, Cruise has rarely been more controlled as he rides around in the back of Max's taxi, dispensing hot takes and hotter lead to victims; but it's in the way he slowly, painstakingly depicts the way Vincent loses control as the night begins to run away from him that's so impressive. He really should play more grade-A shits.

Top Gun: Maverick

6) Top Gun: Maverick

A sequel 36 years in the making, besieged by pandemic-induced release date delays, with a brand new writer and director on board, and the follow-up to one of the most beloved action movies of a generation? Top Gun: Maverick had a lot to prove. Incredibly, it soars higher, faster and even more full-throttle than anyone could have predicted. Returning to the cockpit with decades of experience in pushing the boundaries of action filmmaking, Cruise, Mission collaborator Christopher McQuarrie (on writing duties here) and director Joseph Kosinski deliver aerial acrobatics (yes, the actors are actually in those planes) that will leave you awe-struck, heart in your mouth, fist punching the air with glee. As with Tony Scott 's original, the character work is just as rich as the stunts – Cruise slips back into Maverick's roguish charm with the ease of putting on a familiar patch-covered aviator jacket, but also perfectly evokes the effect that years of tension with his superiors and grief over Goose have had on him – his ever-present over-confidence cracking, just a little. All these years later, it's clear Cruise really did feel the need to return to Top Gun – and on this evidence, it's easy to see why.

5) Mission: Impossible – Fallout

5) Mission: Impossible – Fallout

Frankly, multiple spots in a list of Tom Cruise's greatest movies could be filled by Mission: Impossible films. To do so (as we've chosen not to) would perhaps overwhelm the sheer variety of the rest of his career – but in a way, Mission is Cruise's career. With each passing entry, the saga became a stunt-filled action masterclass in which its leading man goes to greater and greater lengths to bring visceral thrills to the masses – and no Mission film exemplifies that better than Fallout . It's stacked with jaw-dropping setpieces that go out of their way to foreground the fact that its leading man really is doing a HALO jump in a single take, or flying a helicopter through a gorge, or leaping across the rooftops of London (and, yes, breaking his foot in the process). It makes for breathlessly exciting cinema, a kind of spectacle that subsequently feels lacking in almost every other show in town. The Cruise-Christopher McQuarrie partnership continues to be a perfect marriage – the writer-director helping marry action and story beats to the stunts with style and propulsive pace. This is peak Mission , and the peak of Cruise's own cinematic mission – one that you sense will never truly be over.

4) A Few Good Men

4) A Few Good Men

Among all the Tom Cruise legal thrillers of the '90s, A Few Good Men stands tallest. His Lt. Daniel Kaffee, a Naval lawyer more interested in baseball than his own cases, begins the film as a smarmy pencil-pusher – but that all changes when he's handed the case of a Marine killed in Guantanamo Bay, and discovers corruption in the armed forces that will all-too-easily be covered up. It's up to him and fellow lawyers JoAnne Galloway ( Demi Moore ) and Sam Weinberg ( Kevin Pollak ) to prove what really happened in a court of law, facing up to Jack Nicholson 's fearsome Colonel Jessop in the process. It's one hell of an ensemble cast, but Cruise drives it all, capturing Kaffee's increasing desperation and dedication to win the case – and prove that, yes, he can handle the truth – becoming a better person in the pursuit of justice. His intensity is a perfect match for Aaron Sorkin 's dense dialogue, all classily captured by Rob Reiner 's crisp direction.

Magnolia

3) Magnolia

As legend has it, Paul Thomas Anderson wrote the part of Frank TJ Mackie for Cruise after visiting him on Stanley Kubrick 's demanding Eyes Wide Shut set, and deciding that the actor needed to let loose. What fun Cruise would have as Mackie! This cocksure, cock-respecting self-help sex guru struts and shouts and thrusts – yes, there's all of that. But Magnolia is a heavy film, and Cruise, as Mackie comes undone and reunites with his estranged father Earl (Jason Robards), really falls apart, the slick showbiz veneer crumbling as years of emotion burst out. Sitting by his dying dad's bedside, Mackie – away from Cruise's signature grin, away from the big stunts – is unbridled humanity, shaking, weeping, quivering, his anger making way for love. It's a devastating physical catharsis for him, and for us.

Edge Of Tomorrow

2) Edge Of Tomorrow

One of the biggest blockbuster surprises of 2014, Edge Of Tomorrow (or, Live Die Repeat , as it was later marketed), gave us a different shade of Cruise as action star – his Lieutenant William Cage is a smarmy, cowardly PR guy when we meet him, only growing into an elite soldier through the repetitive, Groundhog Day -inspired, video game-esque nature of Doug Liman 's explosive sci-fi thriller. Teaming up with steely warrior Rita (an excellent Emily Blunt ), Cage must live through his final two days over and over, picking up skills and learning from his multiple deaths in order to stop the invasion of some big bad aliens. Cruise's chemistry with Blunt is endlessly compelling, the strength of her character and his star-power making them feel like equals on-screen. But it's the progression of his character that's most intensely satisfying, going from a man who's desperate to weasel his way out of doing anything selfless to the kind of all-out hero that Cruise was born to play. It makes for the kind of movie you'd happily be stuck watching in a time-loop over and over and over and ov- You get the picture.

Jerry Maguire

1) Jerry Maguire

Like many Cruise films, Jerry Maguire has got so many memorable moments and one-liners that they've almost become more famous than the film itself. But the brouhaha over, "You complete me", or, "Show me the money!" masks one of Cruise's best – and most emotional – films. Meshing perfectly with writer-director Cameron Crowe (at his most Billy Wilderian), Jerry Maguire is an often heartwarming, often inspirational, often deeply romantic tale of a cynical sports agent (Cruise at his most winning) who has an epiphany, and begins to hunt around for something akin to a soul. It's cute and charming as hell, especially when Jerry is falling in love with his former secretary Dorothy (a star-making turn from Renée Zellweger ), but there's a bite here that's often overlooked, with a seemingly happy ending that may be nothing more than a sticking plaster over a fairly gaping wound. Still, Cruise and Cameron will have you at, "You had me at hello".

Watches In The Wild The Road Through America, Episode 1: A Model Of Mass Production

The early aughts were an interesting era of big-budget, blockbuster filmmaking. George Lucas' Industrial Light & Magic (the preeminent visual effect house in all of filmmaking) was really feeling itself having just come off a run of two new Star Wars films – and creating an entirely CG character by way of Jar Jar Binks. The same can be said of another effects shop, WETA whose claim to fame came via Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings where they too crafted a full computer being though the Andy Serkis voiced (and bodied) Gollum ( or Smeagol depending on who you ask). It appeared there was nothing that could not be accomplished with a bunch of green screens and CGI. Movie magic was being redefined by the computer.

As time has gone on, some of these effects have proven to age worse than others. Minority Report (2002), directed by Steven Spielberg, is one such film. The adaptation of a Philip K. Dick story about a law enforcement agency called the Precrime Division, tasked with preventing murders before they happen, is packed to the hilt with computer effects that, today, distract from what is otherwise a pretty compelling story.

x-33

In the future, computers require gloves and Frankenwatches. Image, 20th Century Studios

The reason I bring this up in the context of watches and movies is that this film takes the capabilities of computerized effects and transposes them onto the dial of a watch resulting in something of a dual-brand Frankenstein timepiece that has confounded watch-loving cinephiles for decades. And it's on the wrist of the film's star, Tom Cruise. You thought the MoonSwatch was a crazy collaboration. Get a load of this.

This might be hard to believe, but Minority Report is twenty years old, a birthday worth celebrating in my book. It's one of Spielberg film's that's been lost to time a bit – not old enough to be classic, but still dated – similar to another Cruise-led film, War of the Worlds (2004). I'll be the first to admit that this movie never made it into my re-watch list. It strikes me as a "huh that's on" flick when I see it listed next to any number of basic cable properties. But then I discovered a horological nugget that I didn't notice the first time I saw the film two decades ago.

The topic first came up during an in-office conversation about movies (not a rare occurrence for me). That's when we began dishing about Minority Report – a movie that seemed to be brought into the conversation out of left field until I was shown a picture of the so-called Frankenwatch. Ok, so what is it? Well, it's a bit difficult to explain, but I'll try.

Tom Cruise

Anderton (Cruise) hot on the case with his Omega/Bulgari in Minority Report. Image, 20th Century Studios

Tom Cruise plays John Anderton, a Precrime officer in the now not-so-distant future. He wears a large timepiece that at first glance looks to be a chronograph, at second glance, an Omega chronograph, and at third glance a very specific ana/digi Omega Chronograph with certain spacefaring bonafides. I'm referring to the X-33, which is precisely what Anderton's watch appears to be.

The dial is fully digital, what I assume is an ILM effect – and outfitted without the Omega logo. Instead, this watch is prominently branded "Bvlgari." Confused? You should be, but there are reasons pertaining to the less sexy side of Hollywood which explain this. The film does a nifty job of integrating product placement into the narrative with such companies as Lexus, American Express, Nokia, and Bulgari utilized through in-film advertisements.

Tom Cruise

Anderton loses his eyes, and the the X-33 loses its CGI in Minority Report. Image, 20th Century Studios

But with the watch, the placement stretches into a piece of kit worn by Anderton. And it's interesting because Omega is, in real life, a supplier of watches to NASA (you may have heard of the Moonwatch) and the X-33 is the choice of many NASA astronauts. It could have been easily explained that the Precrime division in Washington, D.C. also wanted X-33s of their own.

X-33

A true Speedmaster X-33 by Omega

But Spielberg and crew took it in another direction. Instead of a standard X-33, we got a cross-branded fantastical one … a Bulgari X-33. It's a watch that does not exist, and there's nothing even close to it in the actual Bulgari catalog. It's movie magic in watch form. Crusie wears the piece for effectively the entire film – and in different ways. Sometimes under his uniform jacket with a sleeve window that allows him to read the dial, other times the normal way, and occasionally on the underside of his wrist.

The story follows his escape after it's revealed that he may be premeditating a murder — necessitating his going on the run from the law. Cruise goes full Cruise in this movie and the utilitarian X-33-esque case is the perfect pairing for his escapades.

The film begins with a Hitchcock meets James Bond style cold open where we get to see the Precrime division in all its might, working to solve a murder before it happens. As Anderton and his team approach the house of a would-be murderer husband about to kill his wife after catching her in bed with another man, the pre-criminal is apprehended by Cruise. He then looks down at his wrist [00:13:13] where the Bulgari X-33 peers out from under his sleeve displaying a countdown function. We don't see the Bulgari branding yet, but it certainly foreshadows the messy horology to come.

x-33

Image, 20th Century Studios

The inciting incident in the film is when Anderton learns that he is the next pre-criminal target, though he's convinced he's being framed. Knowing he has some time to get out of his office before he's caught, he endeavors to make a run for it. As he makes his way through the lobby of Precrime HQ, he glances down at his watch [00:42:01]. It's the hero shot of the film and we can clearly make out the case of an Omega X-33 as well as the Bulgari wordmark in bold digital lettering.
