Nice road trip stop. The Maine Turnpike. Stand up. Stretch. Gander through the plaza. Guilty pleasures all around! Eat Popeye's Shrimp Po' Boy, best fast food item I can remember in recent times. Hersheys Ice Cream, get a thick creamy shake. Spacious public restroom.

Gassed up, went to the Burger King for an early lunch. It was the usual fast-food fare, easily obtained.

This is a fine plaza to stop for a rest. The restrooms were clean, and there were multiple food choices if you are hungry. There are plenty of places to park.

Totally disgusted that the state of Maine would let their service plaza get that bad! Women’s restroom had no toilet paper!! Stalls were filthy with no seat covers and to top it off there wasn’t any soap in the dispensers!! The amount of money we... Mainers pay for tolls we deserve better! Maine Turnpike Authority get on it!! More

This review is not about the travel plaza, which is fine and I have no problem with it. This is about the lobster truck parked next to the building. On our way back home we decided to grab a lobster roll. DON'T DO IT. It... was over priced and very skimpy. The people working in the truck had to ask us several times about our order. We really didn't know if they understood us. We paid $75 for 3 meals, no chips or drink. Just wanted to warm all those travelers in Maine that this is not worth the price. There is much better lobster to be had in the state. I felt they were capitalizing on the Bean name. More

My husband & I stopped there coming & going for a load to be picked up. The food was good, the coffee was great, & it was so quiet at bedtime.

Off the Maine turnpike but by no means turnpike food or atmosphere. From the building itself to the service and food you will be pleasantly surprised.

Traveling north this is a good place to take a break and rest. We've done it several times over the years. We have found it to be clean, well maintained and safe. They have several food offerings as well, although we do favor Popeye's.

Stopped in for breakfast and was very happy with the gentlemen behind the counter at Burger King. They waited on us in a very professional and friendly manner. Got our orders quickly and accurately with a friendly good morning. The breakfast sandwiches where fresh and... delicious. Thank you Clarence. More

As a means of filling the body with calories, this site is an excellent choice. Pizza and burgers are on offer with healthier choices more limited.

This is a very busy rest stop so maybe that is why the person at the Burger King was very overcome when our bus people stopped for a quick breakfast . He was kind of rude and even ignored our meals that were sitting on... the heaters . We had to ask him to get our food. More

About Red Square

Red Square (Krasnaya Ploshad) is a public plaza in Moscow in Russia and one of the most famous squares in the world. In fact, it is of such historical importance that it is a UNESCO World Heritage historic site.

History of Red Square

Originally intended to be a marketplace for the city, the name “Red Square” derives from the fact that the Russian word “krasnaya” means both “beautiful” and “red”. Red Square itself is more black than red, owing to its dark cobblestones and spans an area of approximately 74 metres squared.

The exact date of the establishment of Red Square is unknown and probably goes back to at least the 15th century when it was the site of high profile public executions. The first recorded mention of Red Square by its current name dates back to the 17th century. The square’s history is also closely associated with that of the Kremlin, which borders it.

Whilst Red Square was primarily a centre of trade throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, it was also considered a place of religious importance with several churches built around it and some ceremonies taking place on the square itself. It has also served a wider ceremonial and social role, being the site of several coronations of Russian tsars.

Throughout the twentieth century, Red Square became an important site of political, military and social significance, particularly during the Soviet era, when military parades took place there. Several important events have taken place at Red Square, especially during the Second World War, when troops marched through it on their way to the front lines on 7 November 1941 and took part in a victory parade on 24 June 1945. In 1987, German pilot Mathias Rust landed a small aircraft next to Red Square.

Red Square today

Today, Red Square is a tourist hotspot and one of the first places visitors frequent on their travels around Russia. This is due in large part to the Red Square’s central location and impressive surroundings. It is bordered by several sites of historical importance, including Lenin’s Mausoleum , the State History Museum, St. Basil’s Cathedral and, of course, the Kremlin .

So many important events in Russia’s illustrious history have centred around Red Square, and entering it for the first time still evokes a sense of awe. Visit after dark when the square has emptied out and it’s lit up beautifully. Note that it’s not unusual for the square to be closed for ceremonies, processions or rehearsals for these.

Getting to Red Square

Red Square is most easily accessed via the trio of metro stations – Okhotnyy ryad (line 1), Teatralnaya (line 2), Ploschad’ Revolyutsii (line 3). All three are a five minute walk away from Red Square. Approach via the Marshal Zhukov monument for the most memorable impression. Multiple roads in the city lead here, and any and every taxi driver will know where you’re heading!
