5D4N Muslim-Friendly Family Itinerary to Vietnam

avatar-name

Noor Aishah Karim  •  Oct 18, 2023

If you’re looking for adventure, cheap food and friendly people for a getaway, Vietnam might be the perfect holiday destination. We've got the perfect 5-day Muslim-friendly itinerary through Vietnam and its cities of Hanoi and Sapa, contributed by Nur Diana. She took a family vacation with her husband, parents and sibling and here’s what they did!

Day 1: Traveling to Sapa

  • Take a flight to Hanoi and then switch to a minivan to travel to Sapa

P.S. Diana took a direct flight from Singapore to Hanoi on SQ, we checked and the prices start from SG$227!

  • To ensure comfort and space, book a 9-seater luxury minivan just like what Diana did for her family of 6
  • Diana notes that her family does not like tour groups and would often plan their trip by themselves

Stay at the KK Sapa Hotel for your two nights at Sapa!

Day 2: Sapa

  • Travel to Fansipan Mountain for amazing views ?
  • Book your trip to the mountain through Klook, and it will be hassle-free, all you would need to do is to show the travel operators your QR code, and it is all set!
  • from Sapa station to Fansipan station
  • To get across the valley
  • The trip up the gondola allows you to be amongst the clouds, and its visibility would be low!

halal tour vietnam

  • The weather may get super windy and wet, so it’s advisable to wear a slightly thicker sweater or jacket. At the summit, there are Asean flags (except Singapore) which visitors can use as props.

halal tour vietnam

  • After visiting Fansipan Mountain, explore the nearby Cat Cat Village
  • A picturesque and charming destination nestled in the mountains of Vietnam. Located in the Hoang Lien Son range, near the famous town of Sapa, Cat Cat Village offers a unique and authentic experience for travellers seeking to immerse themselves in traditional local culture.
  • The name "Cat Cat" is believed to have originated from the local ethnic minority groups who inhabit the village, particularly the Hmong people.
  • In the Hmong language, the word "cat" means "cascade" or "waterfall," and the word "Cat Cat" translates to "waterfall cascade." The village is known for its scenic beauty, characterised by pictures

Halal Food At Sapa

  • There are limited halal options available in Sapa, and Sapa Halal Restaurant and D’Lion are some of the few halal restaurants there!
  • Diana’s tip: Bring instant noodles with you in the event you can’t get to the halal restaurants.

HHWT Tip: It would be better to download google translate to communicate with the locals as there may be a language barrier. Diana expressed how she once ordered 4 drinks and ended up with 8!

P.S. We asked Diana for her thoughts on Sapa and here’s what she thought:

  • A beautiful place with an ever-changing landscape. It is an untouched beauty.
  • An ongoing development around Sapa town but not so extensive.
  • Worth the 5 hours trip from Singapore!

halal tour vietnam

Day 3: Commute to Hanoi

  • To ensure comfort and space, especially when travelling with family for 5 hours, book a 9-seater luxury minivan to get to Hanoi!

After you’ve arrived, rest at Bespoke Trendy Hotel Hanoi , before heading out to the old quarter of Hanoi

Old Quater of Hanoi

  • Located near Hoan Kiem Lake, the Old Quarter dates back over a thousand years and has been the commercial hub of Hanoi since ancient times.
  • Each street in this labyrinthine district is named after the goods traditionally sold there, such as Silk Street, Shoe Street, and Silver Street.
  • The area is known for its traditional "tube houses," narrow buildings with small storefronts that extend deep into the block.

halal tour vietnam

  • For dinner, head over to this halal restaurant at Cosia Hotel!
  • Halal status: Halal-certified

halal tour vietnam

Then head on to this Al-Noor Mosque in Hanoi!

halal tour vietnam

P.S. If you’re looking for halal food in Hanoi, there are quite several halal restaurants that you can try. Most of it is in the old quarters where the mosque is, and these eateries serve Malay, Indian cuisine and more! The local halal Vietnamese food is usually out of stock or no longer served so go early to catch a taste of the local flavor!

Day 4: Halong Bay Day Tour!

halal tour vietnam

  • Book a day trip to Halong Bay in Singapore through a Vietnamese agent or Klook . Your agent would pick you up from our hotel and the travel time is 2 hours.
  • Head on to the pearl factory before going to the pier. At the pier, you will then take a boat and sail out into the bay.
  • There will be 3 pit stops for you to do some activities. The time given was only 40mins per station.
  • The first stop was Titov Island, where you can swim or trek up a small hill.
  • The second stop was kayaking or boat ride.
  • If you choose Kayaing, you are up for a fun experience and will even come across majestic ‘stones’ up close.
  • P.S. Diana describes this as one of the highlights of her trip!

halal tour vietnam

Halal Food on Halong Bay

  • For Halong Bay, food is part of the package, and no outside food is allowed.
  • However, you can request vegetarian food, and the tour operators will ask you if you can eat seafood as they only serve seafood except for the fried eggs, which are cooked using vegetable oil.

Day 5: Hanoi → SG

Home sweet home!

If you’re planning to go to Vietnam and planning your trip, here’s Diana’s advice:

  • Get a travel agent if you’re not a DIY traveller, as it may be a hassle, especially the pre-prep before heading for the trip. But if you prefer to be with your family and plan your own time and activities at your own pace, you should travel free and easily in Vietnam!
  • Be careful of transport scams! Diana was scammed by the taxi driver inSapa where she paid$32 for a ride, and Sapa town is just a small town! But that’s how we learn, after all, it’s just part and parcel of travelling!
  • Travelling on your own allows you to uncover new places, and you can manage costs according to your budget since you pick your hotel and transportation!
  • As with travelling, don’t forget to do thorough research and be prepared for food, snacks, medication and more!

We hope this DIY Itinerary will inspire you to travel and explore the world and is helpful if you were to travel a trip to Sapa and Hanoi! Diana describes the trip as a wonderful and memorable trip, and we hope you would too if you follow this itinerary for your upcoming trip!

OVERVIEW TOURIST PLACES IN VIETNAM

Sapa overview.

halal tour vietnam

Sa Pa District is located in Lao Cai Province, north-west Vietnam, and 350 km north-west of Hanoi, close to the border with China. Sapa is famous both for its fine, rugged scenery and for its rich cultural diversity. French used to consider Sapa as Summer Capital of Northern Vietnam in the early decades of the 20th century. Its naturally gifted beauty keeps attracting more and more people to spend their vacation there since then. Particularly, the place is the foremost choice for honeymoon couples!

Geographically, Sapa is exactly a mountainous area of Northwest Vietnam. The whole Sapa District is dominated by the Hoang Lien Son mountain range which is at the Eastern extremity of the Himalayas, being famous with the Vietnam’s highest mountain of Fa si pan at a height of 3,142 m above sea level. The town of Sa Pa lies at an altitude of about 1,600 m, bringing in a cool and foggy site of Sa Pa.

Sapa takes its pride in its unique climate in Vietnam. It is highly seasonal, with a subtropical climate in the summer and a temperate climate during the winter. Mean annual temperature for Sa Pa town is 15.4°C, with a maximum of 29.4°C and a minimum of 1°C. The warmest months are July and August, and the coldest months are December and January. Snow falls in some years on the highest peaks. In the morning and afternoon, it is as cool as in spring and autumn. Yet, at noon, it is as sunny and cloudless as in summer. In the evening, it drastically changes into coldness just as in winter. This is actually a unique advantage, making Sapa different from anywhere else in the nation. However, travelers should be noticed that there might be sudden thunderstorm and heavy rains at noon in summer. Yet, subsequently, a rainbow appears turning Sapa into a beautifully magic land with seven colors! So, remember to bring your best camera so as not to miss this magnificent view!

April and May are the best time for tourists to watch the most scenic beauties of Sapa, or else it might be cold and foggy before that and rainy after that. During these two peak months, the town is blossoming with pink and white flowers, and green pastures in valleys. The clouds that settle in the valley in early morning would quickly disappear.

The scenery of the Sapa region in large part reflects the relationship between the ethnic minority people and nature. This is seen especially in the paddy fields carpeting the rolling lower slopes of the Hoang Lien Mountains. The impressive physical landscape, which underlies this, has resulted from the work of the elements over thousands of years, wearing away the underlying rock.

Most tourists agree that it would be regretful if the leisure and relaxation time in cool and fresh weather is not accompanied by visiting trips to Sapa’s prideful natural beauty spots, such as Ham Rong Mountain, Silver Waterfall, Rattan Bridge, Bamboo Forest and Ta Phin Cave. The town is also the starting point for many mountain climbers and scientists who would like to discover the Fansipan Mount, the highest mountain in Vietnam with 3,143 m height. Can you imagine that Hoang Lien Mountain Range is called “the Alps of the North Sea area” since Fansipan Mount also marks its greatest height among others in the Indochina Peninsula as well. The pyramid-shaped mountain is covered with clouds all the year round. On top of the mountain is filled with frequent below zero temperature, especially at high altitudes.

On approaching the town, the very first thing tourists may find is the detached wooden mansions and villas perched on top or side of the hills, behind thick pine forests, hided by fog in the morning. Old and new villas with red roofs now appear and then disappear in the green rows of pomu trees, bringing in the beauty of European towns.

Sapa is home to various families of flowers of captivating colors, unique in the vast country. When Tet, the Lunar New Year Festival, comes, the whole township of Sapa is filled with the pink color of peach blossom brought from the vast forests of peach just outside the town. Sapa is regarded as the kingdom of orchids. Here, orchid lovers are even amazed by the choice, when trekking in the forest filled with several hundred kinds of orchids of brilliant colors and fantastic shapes, such as Orchid Princess, Orchid of My Fair Lady’s Shoe. Some orchids are named after lovely singing birds such as the canary, salangane’s nest, and more.

Sapa is famous for its special cultural diversity in a combination of ethnic minority groups’ culture. Visitors to Sapa will have opportunities to discover the unique customs of the local residents. Local markets are the town’s typically cultural element, which are always crowded and joyful, attracting hundreds of visitors. This is the common place for minority groups to gather and exchange goods. Market sessions are also a chance for local people to promenade. No foreign visitor could help joining such a market session, a typical cultural element of Sapa. What is more, tourists coming to Sapa at weekends have the great chance to learn about local ethnic people’s courtship and martial life, through the Sapa love market and wife kidnapping ceremony of the H’Mong group. The ceremony will begin on April 29th. This is part of a five-day festival, titled Festival on the Cloud, to mark the beginning of the Sapa 2006 tourism year, in the northern mountain township of Sapa, in Lao Cai Province.

India’s Modi, Humbled by Voters, Faces Potent Economic Struggles

With his grip on political power weakened, the Indian prime minister is confronting the same formidable challenge — how to generate hundreds of millions of jobs.

Before the Indian election results emerged this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was widely viewed as a charismatic and popular strongman celebrated by the business world for elevating its importance, even as he failed to solve a vexing problem: how to turn swift economic growth into critically needed jobs.

After the election, Mr. Modi finds himself staring at that same monumental puzzle, yet relegated to an uncomfortable new status. He is the head of a party that has been chastened at the polls, forcing him to forge a coalition to maintain power.

Mr. Modi’s governing authority is likely to be constrained by the complexities of keeping his coalition partners on his side. He could not solve India’s most deep-seated economic challenge when he wielded a monopolistic hold on power. Now, he is a weakened leader who must balance additional interests, while still lacking an obvious way to improve living standards.

“There has been a sense that employment growth has been weak in the last four, five years,” said Arvind Subramanian, a former chief economic adviser to the Modi administration, who is now a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington. “How do you create more jobs? This is really India’s central economic challenge, but I think the government will find itself with relatively limited tools.”

The humbling of Mr. Modi’s party resonates in part as an expression of popular frustration that India remains a land of economic peril for hundreds of millions of people, as well as a country defined by astonishing contrasts in wealth. In major cities, five-star hotels boasting sumptuous spas look down on teeming slums that lack plumbing. In rural areas, malnutrition prevails under many roofs, and families struggle to find the money to keep children in school.

Though its working-age population numbers roughly one billion, India has only 430 million jobs, according to the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy, an independent research institution in Mumbai. And most of those counted as employed are stuck in precarious circumstances as day laborers and farm hands, lacking reliable wages and government workplace protections.

Improved livelihoods are evident in many cities, from the high-rise apartments filling out the horizons to air-conditioned shopping malls and luxury cars choking roads. But the gains are narrowly concentrated. Professionals who work in technology centers in the south of the country and around the capital of New Delhi have enjoyed substantial progress. A rapidly growing domestic auto industry is a source of relatively high-paying jobs.

Magnates like Gautam Adani , one of Asia’s richest men, have seen their business empires enhanced by their relationships with Mr. Modi and his willingness to eviscerate regulatory impediments to their greater fortune.

But most Indian workers are effectively marooned in the so-called informal sector — laboring at roadside stalls, in small shops and in itinerant trades where they have no guarantee of income or the possibility of advancement.

The failure of economic growth to yield more jobs is in large part the story of how India missed out on the manufacturing boom that played out in East Asia over recent decades. From South Korea and China to Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam, hundreds of millions of people have escaped poverty via wages earned in factories.

India has not shared in that transformation in large part because of a historical focus on self-sufficiency, a disdain for international trade and stultifying bureaucracy that has discouraged investment.

“The whole manufacturing thing bypassed India,” Mr. Subramanian, the economist, said. “It’s that bigger development failure that is continuing to haunt India.”

Mr. Modi has pursued initiatives aimed at bolstering manufacturing and increasing exports. His administration has streamlined regulations and improved ports. Yet despite some high-profile developments like Apple moving the assembly of some iPhones to India , manufacturing makes up only 13 percent of the country’s economy, according to World Bank data . That is a lower share than a decade ago, when Mr. Modi took office.

Foreign money has flowed into India’s stock markets , multiplying share prices, a key element of Mr. Modi’s pro-business image. But persuading international investors to put money directly into Indian companies — a riskier bet — has been a harder sell. His Hindu nationalist party has demonized the Muslim minority , a source of social ferment that has raised fears of instability.

The election could further discourage additional investment, because Mr. Modi will likely have a more difficult time gaining passage of stalled reforms sought by business, including laws making it easier to amass land and hire and fire workers.

With no clear pathway toward economic dynamism and more challenging political circumstances, Mr. Modi might resort to a time-honored method of shoring up support: He will expand social welfare programs, tapping government coffers to hand out more cash to communities in need.

Such a course could potentially diminish available funding for the advancement of the government’s signature program — its aggressive construction of highways, ports, airports and other infrastructure. Those plans are central to maintaining India’s strong economic growth and the broader campaign to encourage investment in manufacturing.

Some fear that any short-term pursuit of political favor through the scattering of money could undermine the longer-term project of spurring jobs through the promotion of industry.

“You need to ensure that the benefits of economic development reach the maximum number of people,” said Shumita Deveshwar, chief India economist at Global Data.TS Lombard, a forecasting and consulting firm in London. “If people keep depending on welfare and are not getting the benefits of economic development, then it basically just creates stagnation.”

Geopolitical alterations appear to give India a fresh crack at growing its manufacturing base. As the United States and China engage in trade hostilities, multinational brands are seeking to reduce their heavy dependence on Chinese factories to make their goods. Major retailers like Walmart are increasingly looking to India as an alternative to China.

But capturing that potential investment demands continued upgrading of highways, rail connections and ports, along with a focus on vocational training to give people the needed skills to take up factory work.

Even before the election, there were doubts that Mr. Modi’s administration was moving quickly enough to realize these gains.

“India is a counterweight to China in terms of geopolitics, and we will continue to see some of that investment flowing,” Ms. Deveshwar said. “But the scale at which they are provisioning the ecosystem for these opportunities just is not large enough.”

Trump wants to keep ‘communists’ and ‘Marxists’ out of the US. Here’s what the law says

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump has announced a new campaign proposal on United States immigration — barring “communists” and “Marxists” from entering the country.

The Republican former president, who is making another bid in 2024, on Saturday said he would use “Section 212 (f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act” to “order my government to deny entry to all communists and all Marxists.”

The announcement was reminiscent of Trump’s ban on travelers from several predominantly Muslim countries during his first term, which was heavily criticized as anti-Muslim and ultimately revoked by President Joe Biden.

“Those who come to enjoy our country must love our country,” Trump said during a speech at the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s conference in Washington, adding, “We’re going to keep foreign, Christian-hating communists, Marxists and socialists out of America.”

He also said there needs to be a “new law” to address communists and Marxists who grew up in America, but didn’t elaborate on what it would include.

Trump’s proposal also raised questions about whether a decades-old law could actually be used to ban all communist and Marxist immigrants to the U.S., how it would work, and why Trump is so focused on these political theories in a country where few residents support them.

Here’s a look at existing U.S. laws and what Trump’s proposal could look like:

WHAT DOES CURRENT U.S. LAW SAY ABOUT THIS?

U.S. immigration law already bars people who are members of a Communist Party from becoming naturalized citizens or green card holders, said Andrew Arthur, a former immigration judge and fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies, which is a Washington, D.C.-based think tank that advocates for less immigration in the U.S.

U.S. immigration law says that any immigrant “... who is or has been a member of or affiliated with the Communist or any other totalitarian party (or subdivision or affiliate thereof), domestic or foreign, is inadmissible.”

The origins of that rule date back to 1918 when the U.S. government became concerned about “external threats of anarchism and communism,” according to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services policy manual. At that time, it was also the end of World War I, communism was taking root in the Soviet Union, and the country would soon impose strict immigration quotas in the U.S.

But, it does have some exceptions. For example, people who had to join the Communist Party in order to get a job or if their membership was issued when under age 16, according to immigration code.

The prohibition also doesn’t currently apply to someone who wants to visit the U.S., such as on a tourist visa or as a student.

During his speech Trump said he would use a particular section of U.S. immigration law — Section 212 (f) — to bar “all communists and all Marxists.” That section gives broad authority to bar people who aren’t U.S. citizens entering the country if their entry would be “detrimental to the interests of the United States.”

IS THERE PRECEDENT FOR THIS?

Trump’s comments on barring communists and Marxists harken back to one of the more controversial actions of his administration — often referred to by critics as a travel ban on Muslims. Opponents cited Trump’s own tweets and rhetoric in arguing that the travel ban discriminated against Muslims. But the high court ruled 5-4 in Trump’s favor. Chief Justice John Roberts said in the majority opinion at the time that the justices weren’t weighing in on whether it was good policy but that it was well within U.S. presidents’ considerable authority over immigration and responsibility for keeping the nation safe.

Arthur said that case was a key indicator making him think that Trump would be on sound legal ground if he tried to bar communists or Marxists from entering the U.S. Arthur also said that foreign nationals trying to enter the U.S. have little of the constitutional rights afforded to American citizens.

Trump wasn’t the first president to use this specific power of immigration law to limit who can come into the U.S. A 2020 Congressional Research Service report noted instances where it had been used by various presidents, but the report noted that Trump used the authority to impose broader restrictions than his predecessors.

BUT HOW WOULD THIS ACTUALLY WORK?

Bill Hing, a professor at the University of San Francisco and general counsel to the California-based Immigrant Legal Resource Center , said Trump would run into legal trouble if he just did a blanket exclusion of all communists or Marxists.

In the travel ban that was eventually upheld by the Supreme Court, Hing said the court paid particular attention to the steps that the Trump administration had taken to check with U.S. embassies abroad on whether they could guarantee that people coming from those countries would not be a threat to the U.S.

“You have to have some justification,” Hing said.

That thought was echoed by immigration attorney Allen Orr, the former president of the Washington, D.C.-based American Immigration Lawyers Association. Orr said the version that eventually made it to the high court had a “whole list of exceptions.”

“It’s not a blanket ban if there are a ton of exceptions,” Orr said.

IF TRUMP IS ELECTED, WHO WOULD BE AFFECTED BY THIS PLAN?

Analysts point squarely at one country: China, where tens of millions of people are members of the country’s Communist Party.

Bates Gill is the executive director of the Center for China Analysis at the Asia Society. He said such a ban would most heavily impact China and should be viewed through that lens. Gill said beyond the vast number of members being Chinese government officials, party membership has also traditionally been a pathway for the upwardly mobile in China who are often well-educated, urban and internationally oriented. Since the late 1990s, Gill said, businesspeople have also been joining the party.

“In essence you would be banning the elite of China from entering the United States,” he said. “It would be vast and sweeping and of course highly damaging to the relationship with China.”

ARE THERE COMMUNISTS AND MARXISTS IN AMERICA NOW?

There are some, but judging by the membership of the national Communist Party, it’s a fairly small number.

Communist Party USA has about 15,000 people on its membership list, said party co-chair Joe Sims. The list is “pruned regularly,” he said, but some of that group may not be active members.

The party is growing with about 2,000 to 3,000 new members a year, and has run some local school board and city council candidates, Sims added.

However, it doesn’t have anyone in federal or state elected office, and hasn’t run a presidential ticket since the mid-1980s, he said.

THEN WHY DOES TRUMP TALK ABOUT THEM SO MUCH?

Seeding fears that communists and Marxists are poised to take over the country has proved an effective way for the former president to animate his base.

While there’s no real risk that the U.S. could soon become a “third world Marxist regime” as Trump has suggested, these attacks have helped him target voters’ emotions in a country with a long history of anti-communist sentiment.

The tactic has also helped Trump appeal to some immigrants whose families faced oppression and political persecution under Communist regimes in countries such as Venezuela, Cuba and Vietnam.

Trump has also baselessly referred to his Democratic rivals with these terms since he first appeared on the political scene, but Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and other Republicans recently have piled on with similar attacks, claiming “woke” policies in America are part of a Marxist agenda.

Experts say it’s false to suggest that communists or Marxists rule major U.S. institutions.

Biden, for example, is a capitalism advocate who has taken executive action to promote economic competition .
