Need holiday advice?

Not sure if egypt is for you, 0203 617 5853, egypt holidays.

Shrouded in the mysteries of the past yet equally built for a terrific destination of the the present, Holidays to Egypt make for an unforgettable experience. Whether it’s the Great Sphinx at Giza, a cruise down the Nile or snorkelling in the Dead Sea, the country offers a heady mix of history, thrills and romance.

Egypt is probably the world’s oldest civilisation, having emerged from the Nile Valley around 3,100 BC. Early Greeks, Romans and others went there just for kicks, and to see the wonders of some of mankind’s earliest triumphs. But Egypt is much more than Pyramids and monuments. It is also Red Sea scuba diving, hot night spots, luxury hotels and five-star restaurants. It is romantic cruises down the Nile on festive river boats, a night at the grand opera. All in all, it’s a mindblowing trip like none you have ever experienced. And there’s no better way to taste it than with one of Jetline’s great value all-inclusive holidays . The best time to visit is October to April but if you want a really great deal and don’t mind the heat, June or September is the time for you.

Resorts & Attractions

Why not start with the capital city Cairo, where each year so many of our customers visit the Egyptian Museum, containing King Tutankhamen’s gold mask and the remains of many pharaohs. And then of course, no trip to this destination would be complete without a visit to the pyramids at Giza, and the Sphinx, which are on the outskirts. You’ll see all of these things and more on one of our cheap Egypt holidays. A slow cruise down the River Nile is also an important part of any Egypt holiday – a traditional lateen-rigged boat trip starting in Aswan is a great way to travel in style. And for those who fancy a little adventure, you’ve come to the right place. While many people choose Egypt for the history, others are champing at the bit to dive into the Red Sea, with its spectacular array of coral reefs. And there are so many wonderful resorts that you will have a hard time deciding which to visit. But let’s start by recommending one that’s undoubtedly special: Hurghada , where you can enjoy a traditional beach break, the perfect way to end a couple of weeks of exploration. Hurghada is very popular due to its stunning coral reefs and turquoise waters, perfect for windsurfing. This busy Red Sea Coast resort is within easy reach of the stunning Giftun Islands and the Eastern Arabian Desert. It’s a great place to just hit the beach, and some major world diving and snorkelling sites are accessible just a shot way offshore. And if that appeals to you, Sharm el Sheikh will, too, a top spot for those seeking cheap Egypt holidays. A year-round dry, temperate climate, crystal waters and superb marine life beckon underwater explorers. This is a dream destination for them, offering something for all levels. The more seasoned divers will opt for the huge drop-offs at Ras Mohammed, while novices might choose the gentler Na’ama Bay, where diving classes of all levels are offered. And then there’s Naama Bay , one of the best resorts in Egypt and probably the finest seafront in the Sinai peninsula, offering great snorkelling, amazing underwater reefs and diving opportunities among thousands of sea creatures. Naama is the beating heart of Sharm el Sheikh, and from its warm waters you can discover this historic city for yourself – the great wildlife at the Ras Mohammed Park, its marine life on a cruise in a glass-bottomed boat, its Diving Museum and a Fun Land Theme Park for the kids. At Nuweiba, the sunrise in the east, rising over the hijaz mountain-range of Saudi Arabia and the Aqaba gulf, is probably the most spectacular sight in this area. Apart from hanging out at the beach, Nuweiba offers diving and snorkelling from the camps and hotels, while short or longer camel treks can be arranged from the Bedouins at Tarabin. Luxor was built around the 4,000-year-old site of Thebes, the ancient capital of the New Kingdom. Contemporary Luxor is an eccentric combination of provincial town and staggering ancient splendour. The concentration of monuments is extraordinary: they tower incongruously above the buzz of everyday life and make this one of our most popular all-inclusive holidays to Egypt. Another one of the best resorts in Egypt is Taba , which gives its name to the stretch of coastline from the Israeli border southwards towards Nuweiba, and is one of the most picturesque regions on the Red Sea. Let your eyes soak up the azur waters and sandy stretches of beach laid out before the towering Sinai mountain range. If you holiday in Taba you will also find the resort makes a great base for exploring the entire region, as many sights are easy to reach from here, such as Petra, Jerusalem and St Catherine’s Monastery.

Average Temperatures

Except for the Mediterranean coast the country experiences a desert climate, which is hot and dry most of the year, especially in the summer months (June to August). Winter is from December to February with average temperatures of 68°F to 79°F (20°C to 26°C).

Private Jet Cairo, Egypt

A timeless city, Cairo is a prime private jet destination for the lovers of all things history. Home to wonders of the ancient world, museums swarming in world-class artifacts, and monumental sites of worship, guests can also satiate their craving for delicious cuisine. Immerse yourself in a Middle Eastern region of bruised, yet thriving antiquity, a place Egyptians refer to as Umm Al-Donya (Arabic for “Mother of The World”).

Charter a jet to Cairo and bask in the glory of the Pyramids of Giza, exhibiting immaculate geometry and extraordinary stories of an ancient past. Built as tombs on the orders of pharaohs and their queens, the pyramids serve as a tribute to highlight the determination and achievement of a 4,000 year-old Egyptian civilization. With a private jet to Cairo, visitors can come face-to-face with the Great Sphinx of Giza — a limestone structure with the face of a human, and the body of a lion, commonly believed to represent pharaoh Khafre.

Whether you’re a lover of ancient history or not, you will be amazed by the Egyptian Museum, flaunting some of the world’s most important artifacts and collections. In a day here, you can travel back centuries in time to explore Egyptian antiquity. The museum showcases the jewels of Tutankhamun and other honored pharaohs, along with all their distinguished goods.

For an authentic Egyptian experience, peruse the souq of Khan Al Khalili, an amalgamation of medieval-style shops. Charter a private jet to Cairo, and delve into a traditional landmark of trade, full of aromatic Arabic spices, silver jewelry, souvenirs of every sort, and even belly dancing costumes. Make sure to stop and enjoy a cup of mint tea and a puff of hookah from a historic cafe serving shai since Napoleon’s invasion of Egypt, the iconic El Fishawi Cafe.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Egypt

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Egypt flight deals.
  • Consider flying to Borg El Arab International Airport (HBE) if you're headed to the North Coast of Egypt. The airport serves as the leading international entry point for the Nile Delta Region and Alexandria.
  • If you are flying from Washington, D.C. to Cairo, you can take direct flights from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Cairo International Airport (CAI). Egypt Air is the only airline that offers nonstop flights.
  • Pets are welcome at Hurghada International Airport (HRG). There are two designated pet relief areas: one for domestic travelers in the arrivals hall and one for international travelers in the departures hall.
  • Cairo International Airport is a primary hub for Nile Air, Egypt Air, and other airlines. The airport has three terminals, and they are linked by a shuttle. It is the most significant and busiest airport in Egypt. Sun and beach enthusiasts primarily use the airports in Hurghada, Marsa Alam (RMF), and Sharm El Sheikh (SSH).
  • If you plan to tour the country in Egypt rather than remaining in one particular city, consider booking open-jaw tickets instead of the standard round-trip ticket. Open-jaw tickets will save you time and money, allowing you to get back to Montreal from a different airport other than your arrival airport.
  • Sharm El-Sheikh Airport (SSH) is the gateway to the Sinai Peninsula where the popular resort town that bears its name is located and if you are interested in uncovering the charms of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba, there is no better starting point for a flight from the US to Egypt.
  • Choose Cairo International Airport (CAI) for your flight from the US to Egypt to gain entry to the capital city in the north. This will also grant you access to the Suez Canal to the east and the pyramids of the Giza plateau to the west as well as being a springboard to the interior regions of the country west of the River Nile.
  • The northern coast of Egypt where it abuts the Mediterranean Sea from Sidi Barrani near the Libyan border past Port Said to Al Arish near the border with Israel is covered by Borg El Arab International Airport (ALY), otherwise known as Alexandria Airport. This airport is the main hub for the area, including the Qattara Depression to the west of the city.
  • Hurghada International Airport (HRG), or Hurghada Airport, is centrally positioned along the east coast of Egypt on the banks of the Red Sea. From here, you can trek across the Eastern Desert towards the Nile River where it passes through the cities of El Minya, Mallawi and Asyut, and cross it into the central region of the White Desert.
  • The oasis at El Kharga is a major rest point between the Nile River to its left and the bulk of the Western Desert to its right. Normally it takes over 7h to drive from Hurghada to the oasis, but this has been made easier by flying directly into El Kharga Airport (UVL).

Top 5 airlines flying to Egypt

The flight was delayed but we got to our final destination.

Boarding was great. The flight landed early. It took the crew over an hour and a half to bring out drinks. I paid to upgrade my seat to Comfort+ only to be near a crying/screaming baby who was seldom quiet. Noise-cancelling earbuds didn’t even help. Waste of money to upgrade.

Boarding was good, was able to get on early and get settled in . Loved the glass of wine before take off. Once in the air the service was amazing, from the snacks, drinks and the food was good. The flight attendants were very good and attentive. Love flying with Delta..

Seats in first class on the E175 recline too far back. I was in 2A, and the man in 1A fully reclined almost the entire flight. It took 6-7 inches of space away from me and made it very difficult to work on my laptop.

On 2 different flights the wifi was horrible and there was no drink or snack service.

Wifi wasn’t working well so we couldn't view any media.

Flight was late. Club was full. Experience is exactly what I expected.

Carly the flight attendant was extremely helpful and very accommodating to passengers on the flight from what I noticed. Couldn't be more satisfied with the service and assistance from Delta's flight attendant, Thanks again Carly!!

I didn’t not like that I could not select my seat and ended up with the worse seat.

I didn’t like that I could not select my seat and was assigned a seat when I checked in at LAX

Quality of service on board was very inconsistent. FA service primarily seemed robotic and they barely engaged with passengers

I’m unclear why I had to pay extra for assigned seats as Turkish airlines did not honor the seating. We were placed across the aisle from each other on TK 34, and were seated behind one another on TK 694. Because my name was misspelled on e-ticket (Klawiter, instead of Klawitter) I could not log onto website to get the connection gate number in Istanbul. The monitors in the airport were a jumbled mess 1/2 Arabic and 1/2 English.

On line check in needs a lot of improvement. I tried and gave up.

Food not good, flight attendants not the best, not accommodating very ruff

the female flight attendant was racist towards me. I could tell she treated the two other passengers next to me with more softness.

Oh my god! For an13 hour flight they serve you food just one time. Also don’t be thirsty they give you a little small cup of soda to drink. They seem like their goal is to feed you one so they don’t have to be bothered with you. It quite surprise for such a long flight there are several times to eat at least three and the food was well lackluster. The food and lack of offering drinks which were always hot no ice provided.

We were traveling first class. Checkin counter lady and her manager, both were in bad mood and did not treat us well about checking in the handbag. The gate agent took care of it right away. I travel Turkish twice a year in first class. No one has ever refused to check in the hand bag. Not sure, why this agent and her manager refused. Everything else was excellent.

The 787 economy was a disaster for long haul. The space was too little compared to 777 or 747. Also the extremely low tray table behind the seat made any dining effort a nightmare. However, the movies were up to date, and the food taste was good, despite of terrible serving process caused by small space.

A little bit more comfort. It’s tight space around the seats. But all else is great and a smooth flight!

0ur assigned seats were given to other individuals when we boarded the plane. We were given new boarding passes with new seats all the way at the back of the plane. The reason given to us was that there were issues with the seats. We found out that there were no issues, and someone else's were seated on those.

Despite paying business class, the angle seat was uncomfortable. The crew was just ok. The baggage checkin was a mess at JNB.

The seats were broken, crew didn’t really care about service, boarding was not priority for business class, my bags arrived last

Comfortable flight with decent legroom and good seats. The crew were helpful and courteous and managed well with the stressful boarding and the chaos that’s involved. The food was decent, more than expected from a short flight like this. The only reservation I have was that the crew allowed passengers to board With massive amounts of hand luggage which were piled up on the empty seats next to passengers and and it was a risk to all passengers in the case of turbulence or emergency landing. I’ve never seen this ever on any flights I have boarded with many other airlines.

Flight was supposed to take off Saturday at noon. Bumped for unknown reasons until 2 am, then 9 am, then noon, then we don’t know. Not weather related. Dismal and non existent customer service. No 24/7 relations. Couldn’t get my bag back to attempt to get on another flight until 5pm Saturday. Will never take this airline again!

Greater clarity in organizing line-ups for the various boarding groups would have made it easier for all. Due to the many children, the announcements could not be heard clearly enough, so a simplicity in organization would have helped.

I had a great experience with EGYPTAIR. They offered me to check in my handbag which made it very easy since I use a cane. Thank you to EGYPTAIR crew for making sure everyone is receiving the right services.

I’m not happy because I discovered there is something wrong and my miles have not been getting put on my AA account. So this needs to be fixed because I have traveled a lot since October and none of my miles are registered

This was an American Airlines flight. The crew were very unhappy and quite grumpy. Abrupt to the point of being rude. The food was dreadful. Indeed the breakfast was in edible. I will avoid AA at all costs in the future.

As expected for a BA long haul flight in economy - you get what you pay for. Good leg space, in flight entertainment and food and drink provided. Staff on the return flight (overnight) we're a bit brisk and just wanted to get everyone fed and watered before turning the lights down. We're vegetarian so ordered it separately through the booking, although when we were in flight we realised there was a normal and vegetarian option anyway, and we were given vegan. This is fine, however on the return trip we were told there were no more specially ordered meals left, so be aware in case you have specific dietary requirements.

Fare was much lower with a layover in London as I was able avoid numerous landing fees that would have been added to the ticket price had I booked a direct flight to Amsterdam.

We have business class seats from Los Angeles to London. The crew is friendly and provided great service. The flight was very comfortable and very smooth. Will use this airlines again in the future.

The flight was delayed numerous times with inconsistent updates and very ambiguous information. When it was finally cancelled the logistics of handing out vouchers and rebooking was extremely chaotic. Meal vouchers were completely inadequate for the airport restaurants, and not even accepted at some. All-in-all, it was a very disappointing experience.

Terrible. The flight from Islamabad to London took 3 hours more then previously planned, I missed my connection to Chicago, and instead had to go New York, spend an extra day before arriving at my final destination. The return leg of the journey was similar. The connection time in Qatar was shrinked to less then an hour unannounced, I had to scramble to barely make it to my flight to Islamabad. Terrible experience, never using British airways again.

The crew on this flight were attentive, efficient and friendly. It really made for an enjoyable flight.

The crew on this flight were excellent. They were friendly and attentive. It really made the flight more enjoyable.

They canceled my flight , they put me on a different flight that was delayed and the connection was lost . They lost my luggage. And now I’m stuck with any of my belongings.

Good. But there food was poor quality and 95% of movies didn't have English subtitles

I thought they had rebranded themselves in every aspect but it was quite the opposite. The food was terrible the service was sub-par. Overall it was not a good experience.

Service from staff was poor, food choices were limited. Air plane was not clean or hygienic and seemed like not cleaned for days. Seats were uncomfortable.

service from stAff was barely there , food choices were limited. AirPlane was not clean and seemed like it was not cleaned for days.. Seats were very uncomfortable.

I paid for premium seats and the last minute they changed the aircraft for a bigger one, they bumped me to another seat which was NOT at all comfortable for an 11 hour flight, will fight for a refund!!

The landing was catastrophic. I was very scared. I thought it were my last lminues. Pilotes should be more experienced

ALL services were good. An announcement should’ve been made at the end of the flight that filling out a customs form would not be necessary anymore for USA travelers entering Philadelphia.

The flight was smooth, the premier economy seats were comfortable, the flight crew were excellent. The on board food, however, was AWFUL. I suggest bringing your own food on board.

The flight was smooth, our premier economy seats were comfortable, the flight crew were especially fine - attentive, cheerful. The food, however was AWFUL. I advise bringing your own on board.

The service on board should have been better fast service

Private Flights to/from Egypt and Places to Visit

Egypt is a large transcontinental state in North Africa on the Sinai Peninsula, with a population of about one hundred million. Egypt borders other major states, such as Sudan, Palestine, Libya; its territory is washed by the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, both connected by the Suez Canal. If you’re looking for a truly unique and luxurious experience, then you can’t go wrong with a private jet charter to Egypt.

For tourists, the centuries-old history of Egypt opens in every stone, ruins of ancient temples, pyramids, religious buildings, monuments, and sphinxes. Almost every tourist traveling to Egypt assumes its duty to see the magnificent pyramids of Cheops, and the Sphinx, shrouded in many legends and myths. And what better way to do that than by renting a private jet?

The capital city of Cairo has many ancient monuments, such as the Citadel of Saladin, where you can see the entire city, the mosques of Mohammed Ali and Sultan Qalaun, the Aqueduct, and the largest oriental bazaar – Khan el-Khalili. In another large city of Luxor, there are two giant statues of Pharaoh – the Colossi of Memnon, the temple of Hatshepsut, the local museum, and the Alley of Sphinxes. Alexandria was founded during the Hellenistic rule by Alexander the Great himself; during its two-hundred-year history, here have survived quite a few monuments of Greek culture, including the Mausoleum of Alexander the Great, the Kayt Bay Fortress, the Maritime Museum, the Sultan’s throne, and even the remains of the columns of the most famous lighthouse in the country. Renting a private jet is the best way to see the country in style and comfort, and you’ll have a great time exploring all that it has to offer.

The local opera house throws concerts in the garden inside the fortress and the mosque of Abu el-Abbas, which impresses with its luxurious interior decoration. The Sinai Peninsula is famous for the Colorful Canyon, surrounded by hot springs. You can go with the crowds of pilgrims to the holy site, Mount Moses, the top of which, directly to the chapel of the Holy Trinity, lead 3750 steps. You can visit St. Catherine’s Monastery on the way back, the oldest in the Christian world.

Sharm el-Sheikh, a stunning resort on the Red Sea coast, is a popular destination via private jet to Egypt for those searching for a relaxing getaway. It’s typically divided into several districts. Sharm el-Maya’s district is home to Old Market, a sprawling bazaar selling regional specialties and tourist souvenirs. A stunning beach is also available here. Hadaba is home to a water park, a delphinium, designer boutiques, and the posh Dolce Vita nightclub. Finally, Naama Bay is where you’ll find the most high-end boutiques, trendy bars, exciting casinos, and relaxing open-air cafés and restaurants.

Of course, no trip to Egypt would be complete without a visit to the Great Pyramids. These ancient wonders are truly a sight to behold. And with a private jet, you can get there in no time. You should also take a Nile cruise with a private jet flight to Egypt. The Nile is one of the most iconic landmarks in all of Egypt. You can relax on deck and take in the fantastic scenery, or even stop off at some of the many ancient sites along the way.

The Valley of the Kings is also one of Egypt’s most important archaeological sites. It’s home to the tomb of Tutankhamun and many other famous Pharaohs. So, these are just a few of the many amazing things to do in Egypt. Don’t hesitate and rent a private jet today and start exploring this wonderful country.

Guide to plan your private Jet travel to Egypt – the land of Mysteries.

With sand-covered tombs, austere pyramids and towering Pharaonic temples, Egypt brings out the student in all of us. Visit the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, where Tutankhamun’s tomb was unearthed. Hop off a Nile boat to visit Dendara, Edfu or one of the other waterside temples, and cross Lake Nasser to see Ramses II’s masterpiece at Abu Simbel. Trek into the desert to find the traces of Roman trading outposts and see the glittering finds in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo

The warm sandy beach cost with a colourful coral reef underwater world is waiting for you in Egypt. The coast along the Red Sea has a rocky desert beauty above the waterline and a mind-blowing vibrancy below – rewarding to explore on a multiday outing to one of the globe’s great dives along a coral wall.

For visitors, the Nile river is the perfect place from which to see many of the most spectacular ancient monuments, which is one reason why a Nile cruise remains such a popular way to travel.

Luxury jet travel Egypt

Egypt is the Mother of the World . A saying that I’ve heard so many times while traveling in Egypt and around the world. No one really utters these words in arrogance and It’s mostly followed by a gentle smile. I love Egypt and Its people. They have an old gentle soul. Humor and wit, hard work and kindness are what separates them from the rest. The Arabic spoken in Egypt has a poets virtue to it. One can easily distinguish the Egyptian dialects softness when compared to the Arabic spoken in any of the Gulf Countries.

It has now been 7 years since the Arab spring took place. Started in Tunisia, it caught up all the way to Oman. It left a lot to be desired and when the dust had settled, many of these countries were left in a economic ruin. Egypt, however, is a story of success, an anomaly one would think, but I, on the other hand, think that It’s who the Egyptians really are. Pride, but not just false nationalistic pride. Millions hit the street in the aftermath of the Coup to clean their streets. They got down to whatever it took to take care of their nation and bring it back to a road to recovery.

I recently took a trip to Luxor, Egypt. The aircraft we flew in was a Citation Sovereign and it can easily seat 9 passengers. We were served a full hot catering and the Flight Attendant made all of us feel relaxed and comfortable. Our flight originated In Cairo and it was a short 40 minutes flight. The one thing that I noticed about the Egyptian airports was their security apparatus which was very modern and it made all of us feel very safe. Even private jet customers were searched and X-ray machines were used for every luggage carried aboard the aircraft.

Luxor is a city on the east bank of the Nile River in southern Egypt. Its on the site of ancient Thebes, the  capital at the height of their power, during the 16th to 11th centuries B.C. Todays city surrounds 2 huge, surviving ancient monuments: graceful Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple, a mile north. The royal tombs of the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens are on the rivers west bank. The temple of Luxor is situated on the east bank of the River Nile in the town of Luxor (Thebes). The temple itself was known as the southern harem, it was built during the New Kingdom around 1400 BC. The temple is dedicated to Amun, Mut, and Khonsu and was the focus of one of the most important religious festivals in ancient Egypt the annual Opet Festival. During this festival the statues of Amun, Mut and Khonsu would travel from Karnak to Luxor. As a result, the temple is not aligned to the river, but to the temple complex at Karnak.

The Luxor Temple was a shrine of the kings cult and not just to the Theban god Amun and his family. Access to the site in modern times is through a gate thought to have been constructed during the Roman period.

We also took a Felucca ride on the Nile, and I couldn’t help but light up my favorite Cigar ( The Blind Mans Bluff). In the background, you can see the Winter Palace hotel. Agatha Christie wrote her Novel The death on the Nile while staying at the winter palace. It’s one of the best hotels to stay at while In Luxor.

The Felucca and the river Nile had gently rocked me to sleep. It was one of the deepest sleep I had ever had. The Felucca guide had remained pretty quiet the whole ride, and later I found out that this is pretty common for the river to gently rock you to sleep, and hence, he had not struck a conversation with any of us. He didn’t even bother waking us up, he just gently parked the Felucca by the Winter Palace and waited. It was an experience that left us trying to soak up the history. Two days spent In Luxor were not enough as the history that is this tangible and so much older than most of the other civilizations has to be the non-cliched bucket list for everyone and a 4-day trip is a must with Aswan and Abu Simbel Included.

Food & Drink

With many hotels in Egypt serving up a selection of international dishes for British holidaymakers to enjoy, it is easy to spend your time in Egypt enjoying the flavours of home. However, we think everyone should try their taste-tingling cuisines. From the yummy breakfast dish Shakshuka and the family-favourite stew-like meal Fattah to Koshary, the carb-packed combination of macaroni, rice and beans flavoured with tomatoes and tangy sauce; there’s a whole world of food waiting to be tried. But if you want something simple to start with, why not begin with dessert? Konafa, a pastry soaked in syrup stuffed with creamy cheese and topped with nuts for that extra crunch, is a delight everyone will enjoy.

Conflict in neighbouring Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPTs)

The Israeli government has declared a state of emergency across the whole country. International borders in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPTs) could close at short notice. As a result, the land border into Israel from Egypt at Taba could close with little notice. Check with local authorities and consult the travel advice for  Israel  and the  Occupied Palestinian Territories  before trying to cross the border.

In response to events in Israel and the OPTs, a number of demonstrations have taken place in Egypt and protests have been planned, including after Friday prayers. Demonstrations could take place at short notice, with a heavy security presence in place. You should avoid large gatherings, demonstrations and protests. See  Safety and security

Entering Egypt from Gaza

The Rafah border crossing partially opened on 1 November. This is primarily to facilitate the evacuation of seriously wounded Palestinians and some foreign nationals. We understand that the crossing will continue to be open for controlled and time-limited periods to allow specific groups of foreign nationals, including British nationals, to cross. It is for the Egyptian and Israeli authorities to determine who is permitted to cross, and when. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will contact Embassies to let them know when their foreign nationals can cross. Should we receive notification from the Israeli and Egyptian authorities that individuals are permitted to cross, we will notify those people individually.

Movement to the Rafah crossing and beyond is at your own risk. You should only travel if you judge it is safe to do so. Check the  Israel and The Occupied Palestinian Territories travel advice.

The Egyptian authorities have said all aid going into Gaza from Egypt must be channelled through the Egyptian Red Crescent:

  • telephone: + 20 226 703 979, + 20 226 703 983
  • fax: + 20 226 703 967

They are unlikely to consider requests for humanitarian access made in Egypt at short notice.

An additional unidentified drone also struck outside the town of Nuweiba, though no casualties have been confirmed. The authorities are conducting ongoing investigations.

Incident in Alexandria

On 8 October 2023, an Egyptian police officer is reported to have shot and killed two Israeli tourists and an Egyptian tour guide in Alexandria. A third tourist was injured. Remain vigilant and exercise caution at tourist and religious sites, as well as public gatherings. Find out more information on current risks on the  Safety and security .

Opinion How did so many Americans’ retirement money end up in Bermuda?

Mary Williams Walsh is the managing editor of News Items , an independent daily newsletter, which published an earlier version of this op-ed.

Without meaning to, the world’s soccer fans and sportswriters have opened a window into the secretive but influential world of Bermuda reinsurance. Just a glimpse is enough to raise concerns about the retirement security of millions of Americans.

We’re talking here about people who have either earned a defined-benefit pension at work or bought an annuity from a life insurer. No one ever asked them whether they would like to have their nest eggs moved offshore, or leveraged, or put in the hands of a non-U.S. regulator.

But increasingly, this is what’s happening. Countless Americans now depend on the skill and dedication of the Bermuda Monetary Authority, and they don’t even know it.

Indeed, hardly anyone would know it if it weren’t for soccer fans and journalists who wanted to figure out how a certain private investment company in Miami could afford to buy Everton, a Premier League soccer club in Liverpool. American insurance customers aren’t informed when their annuities are moved offshore; the deals are confidential. But in the process of their investigations, the sportswriters traced the Everton buyer’s offshore money back to the U.S. insurers it came from, found investments incompatible with retirees’ needs (and possibly with U.S. law), and forced more than $1 billion worth of reinsurance to be sent back to where it came from. A transaction like this can hobble a U.S. life insurer. The Bermuda reinsurer in question might not survive.

To understand how this happened requires a bit of background on old-fashioned company pension plans, annuities and how life insurers work with reinsurers.

In recent years, many of the American companies that were still operating employee pension plans have sold them off to life insurance firms. This has quietly changed things for the pension recipients: They still receive the same amount of money, but their pensions are no longer covered by federal law and insured by the federally chartered Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation. State insurance law kicks in, and this varies from state to state.

Then, very often, the life insurers pay reinsurers in Bermuda to take over the obligations , under a whole new set of laws and investment rules. The British territory has a long history of hosting the reinsurance of specialized, big business equipment, such as oil rigs, and it offers companies less red tape, lower costs, a good tax climate and privacy. But the reinsurance of retirement obligations is relatively new, and it’s not at all like reinsuring an oil rig. There are people involved.

It’s not just pensions. Life insurers are also reinsuring the annuities they’ve sold to retirees directly. They package the contracts into “blocks,” then reinsure the blocks, often in Bermuda. The reinsurance increases their capacity, so they can write more new business without being overwhelmed by all the obligations. And there’s plenty of new business to write, with some 11,000 Americans now turning 65 every day. Those with decent retirement account balances can use the money to buy lifetime income — an annuity. Last year Americans bought about $360 billion worth of annuities, a record.

The United States’ big private-equity firms have gotten into the annuities business and have been moving it offshore. Apollo Global Management was the pioneer, with a big Bermuda-based reinsurance division, Athene. Annuities mean cash flow, because the people who buy them pay premiums to keep their contracts in force. Apollo made so much money investing all of Athene’s premiums that soon many other private-equity firms were setting up offshore reinsurers and doing the same. They don’t all do things the same way but, in general, there are three steps: A private-equity firm buys up blocks of annuity contracts, an affiliated reinsurer assumes the obligations offshore and an affiliated asset manager invests the money.

Reinsuring offshore adds leverage that the annuitants know nothing about. The reinsurers can remove some of the capital that life insurers in the United States are required by their state insurance commissioners to hold. There are also big tax advantages. And, offshore, asset managers don’t have to load up on conservative bonds; they can make complex custom securities, such as collateralized loan obligations.

Want to follow the money? You can’t. In the United States, a retiree researching annuities can get a list of all the investments a life insurer holds to back its promises, because it’s public information. In Bermuda, the investments are secret.

This is why we should thank the world’s soccer fans and journalists. Last fall, when a private investment firm in Miami, 777 Partners, made a bid for Everton, part of the money was to come from its Bermuda reinsurer, 777 Re Ltd. — a cash cow taking in premiums from annuitants all over the United States.

An affiliate, 777 Asset Management, invested this money, favoring sports. When 777 Partners bid on Everton, it already had stakes in soccer teams in Europe, South America and Australia. But the Premier League is picky about investors. Its due diligence moved so slowly that sportswriters pushed to find out why. Soon, thanks to their digging , all sorts of dirty laundry was hanging in public. It turned out that 777 Partners’s co-founder, Josh Wander, was being hounded by creditors in many jurisdictions, and the debts ranged well into the tens of millions. Wander’s firm also had a jet-leasing business whose planes were being grounded and repossessed. And he had once pleaded no contest on drug charges.

Then came the revelation that 777 Re could not provide audited financial statements for the past two years. This is unheard of in life insurance, where policyholders typically pay premiums for years before they receive any payouts. No one would do this without knowing the company was sound.

The Bermuda Monetary Authority quietly put 777 Re under administrative control, and A.M. Best, a specialty ratings firm, downgraded it in two steps from A-minus to C-minus — close to a death sentence. No one can do business with such a weak reinsurer.

When a reinsurer is in trouble, the problem can spread. Its life-insurer counterparties can’t very well leave their blocks of business there, so they take them back — if they can without being swamped. If they are swamped, a state insurance regulator can close them.

When A.M. Best downgraded 777 Re to C-minus, it also downgraded two counterparties, though not by nearly as much. These were Sentinel Security Life, regulated by Utah, and Atlantic Coast Life, regulated by South Carolina. They’re both part of a family of life insurers owned by Advantage Capital Holdings, or A-CAP.

The ratings firm put them “under review with negative implications,” which gave them time to escape the Bermuda triangle. It warned that they might deplete their required capital when they took their annuity obligations back. A.M. Best said it would see when they were done and issue new ratings then.

In February, Kenneth King, the CEO of A-CAP, held a webinar to tell insurance brokers that they could still sell his companies’ annuities, that the reinsurance contracts were still in force, and that he had a plan to unwind them carefully. Rather than shut off business to the reinsurer, King said, he was raising new capital, about $400 million, and finding new, A-rated reinsurers that could take the obligations away from 777 Re. He said that as of March 1, 777 Asset Management was no longer authorized to invest the premiums.

This was a webinar for brokers, but sportswriters were sitting in, too. Some of them reasonably concluded that King was saying that the 777 Re cash cow was dead, and the Everton deal was off.

Yet when asked about Everton last week, a 777 Partners spokesman said the firm remained “confident in its ability to fund both the transaction and the Club’s three-year business plan.” He said that 777 Re was solvent, and disputed reports that its audited financial statements were missing. This could not be confirmed; the information is confidential.

The annuitants are still paying their premiums as if none of this were happening.

So, maybe 777 Re is insolvent — or maybe it isn’t. Maybe it has squeaky clean audits — or maybe it doesn’t. Maybe King will disentangle his life insurers from 777 Re and stop the bleeding. For the annuitants’ sake, we can only hope so. But with so little transparency, it’s impossible to be sure.

The biggest question, whether 777 Re is an aberration or a harbinger of more trouble to come for annuities, is unanswerable. But annuities are hard enough for ordinary Americans to shop for without having to worry about other bad apples in Bermuda’s barrel. The next time something like this happens, there might not be any sportswriters around to give us a heads-up.
