2018 BMW R 1200 RT

Forty years on.

bmw tour r 1200 rt

You’re old school. You’re new school. And you want to tour. Where to turn? Either choose from a number of throwback V-twins or pick the BMW R1200RT. The RT has played a valuable role in BMW’s lineup for decades, beginning with the original R100RT of 1979. Now four decades later, BMW’s unique opposed-twin touring formula continues, with improvements those first RT adopters could scarcely have imagined. For instance, the R1200RT’s 1,170cc engine boasts four camshafts and fuel injection, has four-valve cylinder heads to boost power and efficiency, and employs air- and liquid-cooling, and a balance shaft.

For nimble handling and ride comfort, the claimed 609-pound R1200RT has BMW’s unique Telelever fork and Paralever shock, the latter of which has tool-less spring preload and damping adjusters. Happily, sporty Z-rated touring radials will weather any storm the RT’s rider can muster by turning up the wick on the 125-hp engine. And they’ll do so for a long while too; with its claimed 47 mpg fuel economy and a huge 6.6-gallon tank, the R1200RT can conquer some 300 miles between fill-ups.

Likes: Terrific comfort and economy; height-adjustable seat; standard stability control

Dislikes: LED turn signals and taillight but halogen headlights? That's backward!

Verdict: A stately, comfy, and gimmick-free touring twin

An iconic long-distance tourer, the 2018 BMW R 1200 RT has a classic boxer twin as its centerpiece, albeit updated to feature both liquid- and air-cooling.

With a generous wheelbase and rake, the BMW R 1200 RT is a smooth highwayman. The big change for the coast-to-coast sport-touring runner is ABS Pro.

Hello everyone and welcome to Motos and Friends, brought to you by the Editors at Ultimate Motorcycling.  My name is Arthur Coldwells.

This week’s first segment is the 2024 Yamaha MT-09 , one of the highest performing naked upright sportbikes out there. Senior Editor Nic de Sena recently returned from the launch of the all-new three-cylinder Yamaha, and it seems he was impressed.

Motos and Friends is brought to you by Arai helmets . If you’re into Dual-Sport, then you’ll want to check out the new Arai XD-5 . It’s a completely redesigned helmet, and as with everything from Arai, every improvement is made with a priority for protection. One of the major changes is the new VAS-A visor system, derived from the one originally developed for the Corsair-X. The new visor is designed to maximize surface area to glance off impact energy whilst at the same time offering easy installation and removal of the visor and peak.

Arai is obsessed with every detail—even those unseen. There is such a thing as “The Arai Difference”.   For instance, if your experience has been that helmets are hard to get on, then try the Arai Contour-X , designed with a wider bottom opening for easier on/off.  Once on, you will be impressed at the amazing comfort of the Contour-X, especially if you’re into long-distance touring.

So get to your local dealer and try out the full range of Arai helmets. You will be instantly amazed at the fit and all-day comfort of any Arai helmet. You should also check out AraiAmericas.com to learn more.

In our second segment this week, Teejay Adams chats with national-level Moto Trials rider and GasGas engineer Daniel Blancgonnet. Trials is an interesting discipline as although it is without doubt the slowest of all motorcycle sport, it is also arguably the hardest one to be really good at. Daniel gives us his interesting insight into what the sport is about, why he finds it so challenging, and what he really loves about it. Doing that while also working for the Pierer Mobility Group and GasGas at the same time just might be the perfect motorcycle career!

So, from all of us here at Ultimate Motorcycling, we hope you enjoy this episode.

I do not t pretend to be the best bike rider although I have ridden the Blue Ridge and the Tail four times on a Yamaha Road Star, HD UltraGlide and my last bike a Road Glide Bar far my favourite. In August I traded on a 2017 R1200 RT. What a change. The bike is amazing. Literally I would compare ... riding a Harley to a tractor. This bike handles like a dream. I have more confidence in my riding ability than ever. No more struggling with the HD weight. Braking and acceleration is amazing. Maybe I am not as cool as I used to be on my RoadGlide but riding this bike is FUN. Seriously I wish I could have both but I cannnot wait to ride the Tail on the BMW.

2017 BMW R1200RT Review

bmw tour r 1200 rt

2017 BMW R1200RT on www.Totalmotorcycle.com

The new R 1200 RT – more impressions per kilometre…

Never-ending riding fun.

Increased comfort for a greater sense of thrill. A motorcycle that defined the classic touring bike segment has now reached the next stage of evolution: the new BMW R 1200 RT. With its light handling, the R 1200 RT makes it possible to enjoy what is most important: riding through the landscape. Whether on your own or with a passenger: the new R 1200 RT is all about comfortable, relaxed riding on every tour.

More dynamic performance. More control.

The new RT has a new air/water-cooled BMW boxer engine with even more torque and 125 bhp for powerful propulsion. Thanks to the highly active electronically controlled suspension system ASC, the machine is still very easy to control and offers stability on every country road. The standard modes “Rain” and “Road” can also be activated at the press of a button, adapting the motorcycle perfectly to the weather conditions and road surface as required. The Board Computer Pro and the familiar heated grips round off the range of basic equipment.

More optional extras. More comfort.

The special equipment for the new RT enables even simpler handling of the machine while still offering an increased level of comfort. For example, the electronic suspension BMW Dynamic ESA responds within a fraction of a second to changing surfaces. Shift Assistant Pro allows the rider to shift up and down without using the clutch or throttle valve. Another option available is “Dynamic” mode, which guarantees maximum riding fun for sporty, dynamic motorcyclists. Also available as an optional extra: a central locking system which also locks both cases by remote control, a cruise control system and lots more besides.

More design. More impressions.

A supreme touring bike with a persuasive design: the use of transparent materials conveys lightness and agility. The R 1200 RT is available in the new elegant paint finishes Quartz blue metallic, Ebony metallic and Callisto grey metallic matt.

I’ve never had the factory GPS for my RT but now that I’m “kinda sorta” retired according to the wife, with longer trips in mind I’d like something other than my iPhone. I’ve heard stories about the Garmin from BMW not being very good, not to mention crazy expensive, and I was wondering if there are any solutions out there for neat installs beyond the iPhone on a ram mount on the handlebar. Thx.

So I don’t sound long winded the Garmin XT has been an amazing addition to my 2019 RT. Getting answers here will help you but research research research will be your greatest ally once you figure out the direction you want to go. YouTube will also give you lots of answers. Remember you get what you pay for. Good luck.

I typically run two GPS's. One is a Garmin XT that I use specifically for navigation, and the other is a Garmin Nav V that I use to monitor data of the ride. I have several other, some older, GPS's and this is the normal setup for me. Works great.

How is that XT mounted?? Thx.

It's in the Garmin XT mount that comes with it. It's attached to an accessory shelf. Very solid and secure. Here's a link to it at Sierra BMW but it's available cheaper elsewhere. RCU Shelf.

reg26 said: You cant go wrong with the Garmin XT. I bought this adaptor from this website and it fits right in the factory mount assuming you have a 2019 or earlier RT. You cant use the wonder wheel with it but the wheel doesnt do that much on the RT anyway and I never used it. Here is the link. It ships from Italy but for some reason I got mine in 4 days to NY. Thats correct. There is no wiring required. Just snaps right in the the NAV 5 or 6 but much nicer screen and larger also. It's a great GPS

Motorcycle Phone Holder GPS Navigation Stand Bracket For R1200RT R1250RT | eBay

That's a great little cradle mount. Works with phones or GPS's (apparently), flexibility which is a huge advantage. All I can say about the E-Nav bracket versus the holder you referred us to, is that I like the security of using the Garmin mount within BMW cradle, to hold my GPS. A solid "snap" of the mechanical connection is superior to a spring grip of a phone/GPS holder, IMHO. However, had I seen this before I bought the E-Nav bracket, I probably would have tried it first. It looks like a really, great solution. By the way, I like having the Garmin Zumo on my bike, versus just a smart phone because (1) The GPS works when there is no cell service, (2) the Zumo is motorcycle/ATV purpose built, i.e. it's armored against the vibration of a motorcycle. There are plenty of reports of cell phones failing when attached to vibrating motorcycles. But, certainly, to each their own.

Very true. I clearly haven't been in a wild enough area yet for that to be a problem. Nor do I intend to. I did enough "roughing it" when I was younger. Now, for dinner, instead of making beans, I like to make reservations.
