There are a few things every traveler needs, no matter where in the world they're going — and a toiletry bag is one of them. The humble case might be an afterthought to some, but these helpful bags are crucial to keeping your travel essentials organized.

We tested 52 toiletry bags and cosmetic cases (and continue to do so for a period of at least six months) in order to bring to you the best of the best, evaluating capacity, design, portability, and value. We also considered the overall quality of the bags, as well as their ease of use on real trips.

Taking our test results into consideration, we've put together a list of the best toiletry bags across various categories; you’re sure to find one that suits your needs.

Best Overall

Away large toiletry bag.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Portability 5 /5

This bag holds more than you'd expect from just looking at it.

The limited edition colors often sell out fast.

You might be most familiar with Away for its selection of hardside luggage and weekender bags, but the brand carries travel accessories, too, including this large toiletry bag that earned high marks across the board during our tests.

Though we found the bag to be even roomier than expected, there are so many individual compartments including a clear cosmetic bag, a zippered pouch, two mesh linings, and an exterior pocket, to name a few. You won't be reaching into a bottomless pit, rummaging around for individual products here. We also love that the bag zips open wide enough for you to reach inside with ease. We packed it with both large and small items, from travel-size liquid bottles to makeup brushes, and there was still room for more.

We also noted the durability of the water-resistant nylon, which is lightweight without feeling cheap. The interior of the bag is coated with an easy-to-wipe material, allowing you to clean up any spills quickly. The bag comes in five color options (with limited edition colorways offered on occasion), as well as a smaller size option and a hanging version of the bag.

Best Compact

Dagne dover mila toiletry organizer.

Dagne Dover

  • Capacity 4 /5

It might be small, but it can still fit full-size makeup brushes.

The dividers take up valuable space.

If you're a toiletry minimalist, this is the case for you. The highly compact Dagne Dover Mila keeps all your products neat and organized in a tiny, plush drum made of water-resistant recycled poly. Unzip the lid and you'll see a grid created by a removable insert — use the insert to keep your products separated from one another, reducing their impact if the toiletry bag is jumbled around. There's also a zippered mesh pocket in the lid, as well as four elastic loops to hold items like makeup brushes and lip balm.

We did notice, however, that the insert takes up quite a bit of space in the bag, and you'd be able to squeeze quite a few more items inside if you remove it instead. Of course in that case, you wouldn't have much help in terms of organization. Ultimately, we love the flexibility — you can customize the bag to suit your needs.

The Details: 5.5 x 5.5 x 5.5 inches | 6 ounces | Material | Recycled poly

Best Waterproof

Matador flatpak zipper toiletry case.

Back Country

  • Design 4 /5

It's extremely lightweight — just over an ounce.

There aren't any extra pockets or pouches for organization.

While many toiletry kits are water-resistant, this one is fully waterproof, and that makes all the difference if you're on an outdoor adventure like camping or a multi-day kayaking trip. It's made from a special nylon that has a secret superpower: "dry-through" technology, which allows moisture to escape from the bag without letting any in. That means your toiletries (like a wet toothbrush) can dry while they're in the bag.

We found this bag to be deceptively spacious, given that it looks like a simple pencil pouch at first glance. The bag expands at the bottom, allowing it to stand alone on a flat surface while giving you the space to fit larger items in with ease. That said, there aren't any useful organizational tools to keep your products in order — this is a fairly bare-bones bag.

The Details: 9.5 x 6.75 x 3.5 inches | 1.1 ounces | Nylon | Waterproof

Best Organization

Peak design wash pouch.

Peak Design

The bag is lined with high-density foam for extra protection.

It's a fairly pricey bag.

When you have a large number of toiletries to bring with you on vacation, the best thing you can do is choose a toiletry bag that helps you keep everything organized. This is that bag! Though it appears small from the outside, the bag is so thoughtfully designed with organizational tools — we found that there's a pocket for just about everything. The main compartment is large enough to fit small bottles, while mesh pockets of various sizes line the walls. There's also a separate pocket for your toothbrush, which keeps it nice and clean.

Other highlights include a wide opening to access each pocket easily, and the ability to stand on its own thanks to the bag's layer of high-density foam that also helps protect the items inside. It also has a handy hanging hook if you'd prefer to keep some counter space clear.

The Details: 10.2 x 6 x 4.4 inches | 8.7 ounces | Nylon

Best Dopp Kit

Dare to roam steward dopp kit.

Dare to Roam

The material is antimicrobial and antibacterial.

Organization is limited to three pockets.

What are dopp kits, anyway? Though the term can be used interchangeably with "toiletry bag" today, the dopp kit was originally a durable toiletry bag devised by German leather maker Charles Doppelt that was popular with military personnel in the 20th century. It typically takes the silhouette seen here in this bag — a large main compartment, sometimes with side pockets.

What dopp kits are great for is space; we were amazed by how much could fit in this bag, especially because it's expandable with side clips and adjustable webbing straps. As such, it's ideal for longer trips where you'll need as much space as you can get. We also love that it's made from an antimicrobial and antibacterial nylon (yes, it's water-resistant), though we think it could use a little more organization beyond two interior pockets and one exterior one.

The Details: 4.5 x 8.7 x 4.7 inches | Polyester | Water-resistant

Best Small Hanging

Sea to summit hanging toiletry bag.

Small and lightweight, it's perfectly portable.

It has to hang as it won't stand up on its own.

When it comes to hanging bags, this one is perfectly balanced. It's made from an ultra-thin, water-resistant nylon and takes the shape of a saddlebag, which is ideal for hanging. We found that no matter how many items we stuffed in there, the bag never really felt weighed down; all the products were perfectly situated and easy to access, thanks to a plethora of pockets.

This bag also comes with a detachable mirror, which makes it great for outdoor adventures when you don't have access to a vanity, as well as handles for easy transport. Ultimately, it is perfect for people limited on space and weight, whether they're on a multi-day trek that requires them to carry all their gear or traveling for an extended period of time with limited storage space. The toiletry bag comes in two sizes (we tested the smaller one) and four color options.

The Details: 10.2 x 3.9 x 8.9 inches | 0.3 ounces | Nylon | Water-resistant

Best Large Hanging

Bagsmart hanging toiletry bag.

This is an excellent value if you need to store full-size items.

The material is difficult to clean.

Bagsmart is known for making convenient travel products at affordable prices, and that's certainly true of its hanging toiletry bag. Before it's opened, the bag looks just like a little quilted briefcase; inside is an extraordinary amount of storage. Unzip the perimeter and the bag unfurls into four panels of hanging storage for your toiletries, which we found perfectly capable of storing just about every toiletry in the book save for full-size bottles of shampoo and body wash. While most of the storage compartments are variously sized zippered pockets, some actually have elastic bands to help hold your items in place.

The quilted material is made of polyester, which we found to be a little difficult to clean. It is water-resistant, though, and the texture adds a nice visual quality. Plus, it comes in ten colorways.

The Details: 12.6 x 9.1 x 4.3 inches | 15.2 ounces | Polyester | Water-resistant

Best for Cosmetics

Béis the cosmetic case.

The brush holder and mirror are removable.

The main compartment is pretty much just one big open space.

The clean, minimalist design that Béis is so loved for comes through in its cosmetic case: a sturdy bag with plenty of space for makeup aficionados. For starters, it's offered in eight elegant earth tone hues. But then there's the simple rectangular shape, which feels almost handbag-like in its sculptural form, as well as luxe hardware that adds to that handbag quality.

Though this bag can carry all types of toiletries, it's specifically designed with cosmetics in mind. That's evident from the removable mirror and brush holder, which has PVC material where the brush heads will go for easy cleaning. There are also a few slip pockets, which we found especially helpful for palettes. One thing to note, however, is that the main compartment of this toiletry bag is simply a vast space without any dividers to organize individual products. That said, we can report that nothing broke or spilled during evaluations.

The Details: 9.5 x 4 x 7 inches | 1.38 pounds | Polyester | Water-resistant

Best for Men

Bagsmart toiletry bag for men.

It opens wide with a double zipper.

It's made of canvas, which may be hard to clean but is water-resistant.

Fun fact: dopp kits were originally designed for men so it makes perfect sense why this one is designed to fit shaving and grooming products in particular. It's made of canvas for a rough-and-tumble look, and it's offered in seven colors (mostly neutrals, but also light pink) and two sizes. Though we consider it sturdy enough to stand on its own, we also found it flexible enough to be stuffed into a packed weekender.

As for storage capabilities, there's a main compartment that's accessible via a double zipper, which means the kit opens nice and wide for you to be able to access your items. That main compartment can fit bulkier items, while smaller items can fill the pockets along the sides. There are also two separate side pockets, one of which is designed to hold wet items.

The Details: 10.2 x 5.9 x 6.3 inches | 6.4 ounces | Canvas | Water-resistant

Best for Short Trips

Tumi response travel kit.

It opens like a clamshell.

It's not water-resistant.

Luxury brand Tumi doesn't only make high-end suitcases and travel bags — they also make high-end toiletry bags. Made from ballistic nylon (and offered in three colorways), this is one of the most durable toiletry bags out there, and it wouldn't be surprising if this bag lasted years, even with regular use.

Its best feature is the fact that it opens like a clamshell, with two distinct compartments in each half. That makes it easy to access everything in the bag, whether you're laying it flat on a countertop or you're hanging it via the attached hook. There are four pockets, including one water-resistant one, and two elastic loops to hold products like toothbrushes or razors. We think it’s a reasonably spacious bag, but only for travel-size products — that's why we recommend it for short trips rather than long ones.

The Details: 6.3 x 9.5 x 3.5 inches | 0.9 pounds | Ballistic nylon

Best Leather

Cuyana travel beauty case.

  • Portability 4.5 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

This is a true luxury item with exquisite craftsmanship.

More care will need to be taken so spills don’t damage the leather.

Take one look at the Cuyana Travel Beauty Case, and it's clear that you're dealing with a luxury item. Made from Italian pebbled leather, this toiletry bag is extremely elegant in each of its three colors: ecru, soft rose, and black. We found that this is high-quality leather that's not so delicate you have to worry about damaging it when stuffing it in your backpack or weekender.

As for storage, there are two main compartments: one with an internal elastic pocket for storing larger items and another that has elastic straps to hold items like makeup brushes in place. They open like a clamshell, and between them is a detachable pouch for smaller items. The pouch is ideal for a few items that can be used to refresh your makeup on a travel day, but it can't hold enough products for a full face.

The Details: 6.2 x 10.2 x 3.1 inches | 1.6 pounds | Italian pebbled leather

MZ Wallace Mica Cosmetic Case

It's a no-nonsense bag — simply stash your stuff and go.

There's only one main compartment with a smaller zippered pocket.

The best thing about a pouch like this one is that it's very straightforward — all you have to do is toss in your items without giving much thought to organization. We loved this particular toiletry bag because it's more spacious than it seems at first glance. That's particularly true of the one zippered pocket inside: it was able to hold seven makeup brushes.

By the same token, the lack of organization might be frustrating to some. Depending on your preference, you might wish there were a few dividers or additional pockets to keep things a little tidier inside the bag. Still, the amount of space it has for items is impressive, and for some travelers, that might be just what they're looking for.

The Details: 9.49 x 4.02 x 5.98 inches | 0.23 pounds | REC Oxford

Best Budget

Wandf toiletry bag.

  • Portability 4 /5

It comes in nearly 20 colors.

The main compartment only has one zipper, which makes it a little tough to retrieve items.

As you're probably well aware by this point, toiletry bags can get quite expensive — but they don't have to be. This is a particularly budget-friendly model, yet it accomplishes just about everything you'd need a toiletry bag to do. For one, it has multiple compartments. And for another, it's a water-resistant case, which means it can handle being splashed on a bathroom counter.

The compartments are both the success and the downfall of this toiletry bag. We were beyond impressed with the amount of space inside the main compartment, as well as with the two side compartments with mesh pockets. But we found that the main compartment was almost too spacious and could benefit from another divider of some kind. Given its size, it could also benefit from a double zipper opening, which would allow you to access more items throughout the bag than the existing single zipper.

The Details: 10.24 x 4.72 x 5.91 inches | 3.53 ounces | Nylon | Water-resistant

Other Toiletry Bags We Liked

  • Dagne Dover Hunter Neoprene Toiletry Bag : We love the soft, water-resistant neoprene material of this bag, as well as the two detached pouches for easy organization. (And did we mention the colors? Those are beautiful, too!) Unfortunately, we found it to be a tight fit to squeeze both of the detachable pouches into the main bag when all three had items in them.
  • State Bags Bensen Dopp Kit : This is a spacious bag with a detachable pouch for additional storage — there's not much to not like here. But we think it's a bit too expensive, and we found the hook to be too small to use in many cases. Because it's so spacious, it's best for longer trips, as we think it might take up a bit too much room in a carry-on bag.
  • L.L.Bean Personal Organizer Toiletry Bag, Medium : A favorite for decades, this bag is the king when it comes to storage space and organization — there are pockets for just about everything. Some might find the sheer number of storage spaces to be overwhelming. But others, particularly those going on long trips or families who might be sharing a toiletry bag, will love the roominess.
  • Baggu Dopp Kit : This bag packs flat, which is great when you need to store it somewhere. But when you expand it, you'll find that it's large enough to carry all of your toiletries and then some. The only thing we worried about was the durability of the materials. Though it did not fail any of our rigorous tests, we suspect it may wear out over time.

We tested 52 toiletry bags and cosmetics cases in our lab to determine the best products.

Testing started with an analysis of the bag when it was empty; we examined the materials, the construction, and the overall design.

Then we packed the bags with common travel essentials like toiletry bottles, makeup, and dental products, among other items. We then re-evaluated the design of the bag, noting overall capacity; convenience and security of organizational compartments, pockets, and pouches; closure functionality (such as zippers, magnetic clasps, and Velcro tabs); and overall sturdiness and stability of the bag.

Next, we put the bags into weekenders, carry-on luggage, and backpacks to see how they'd fit. We also carried around the larger bags to evaluate the feel of the toiletry bags in them.

Finally, we rated each toiletry bag on its capacity, design, portability, and value, all the while considering extra characteristics like the material's water-resistance, ease of cleaning, and any extra features, such as hanging straps or built-in mirrors.

Testing of the toiletry kits then continues for a period of six months on our real-world trips, and we will continue to update this article based on the results.

When the bag was fully packed, we placed it inside a large weekender bag to get a sense of its weight by carrying it around our lab. We also checked how much space the bag took up inside the weekender bag to determine if there was ample room to store other items, such as clothing and accessories. We then determined whether the bag would be suitable for weekend trips and/or longer vacations.

After rating for all attributes, we checked each bag's price to rate the overall value.

Tips for Buying a Toiletry Bag

Look at the design of the bag.

Some toiletry bags are voids — they have one cavernous space to fit all your items. But others are separated into compartments with pockets and pouches to keep your items in place. Depending on what you're storing in your toiletry bag, you might prefer more organizational tools than a single open space. Also consider the material; more durable, water-resistant materials are ideal for toiletry bags, since they'll be getting quite a bit of use on the road.

Consider capacity and the items you pack

What do you plan on putting in a toiletry bag? If you're a minimalist who carries very few toiletries — say, just face wash and toothpaste — you might only need a small case But if you have an extensive skincare routine — including sunscreen and after-sun lotion — and you travel with all your makeup, you'll need a bag with enough space for everything.

Think about portability

If you plan on taking your toiletry bag in your carry-on, you'll want it to be as compact and lightweight as possible to save room for everything else in your bag. And if you're packing liquids, gels, or aerosols, make sure your items’ sizes comply with the TSA's 3-1-1 rule . If you're checking your toiletry bag, though, you might have more flexibility with size and weight.

While a clear bag is not explicitly stated on all sections of the TSA website , this is the common practice and can speed things up at the security checkpoint. Toiletry bags that don't hold any liquids, as well as toiletry bags that will be checked in your suitcase (regardless of their contents), do not need to be clear.

Since toiletry bags frequently come into contact with liquids — either from leaking products or from the bathroom counter — water-resistant or waterproof materials are best. Another factor to consider is durability. Toiletry bags are typically fairly heavily used when you travel, so it's best to look for tear-proof fabric that will hold up over time.

A TSA-approved toiletry bag is one that meets the TSA's requirements for the 3-1-1 rule regarding liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes packed in carry-ons. These products must be 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters or less, and they all must fit in " 1 quart size, clear, plastic, zip top bag ."

You can pack just about anything in a toiletry bag, from heatless hair curlers to body washes to makeup. Depending on what you plan on putting in your toiletry bag, you may want to look for ones with special pockets — many toiletry bags have designated spots for items like makeup brushes or palettes to keep them secure.

Best Travel Makeup Bag Overall

Spacious, sturdy and easy to clean, béis the on the go essential case.

Dimensions: 7.5 x 3.5 x 5.25 inches |  Weight:  0.56 pounds |  Material:  Polyurethane leather, PVC exterior, polyurethane lining |  Closure:  Double U-zip

  • An easy to clean exterior
  • Transparent windows
  • Sturdy zippers
  • You have a small carry-on or personal item—this makeup bag can take up space

Béis may be best known for its popular luggage, but the brand has also rolled out some excellent travel accessories. Its On The Go Essential Case is a favorite of Forbes Vetted senior travel editor Astrid Taran , who brings it with her on every trip. “I pack my small toiletry bottles in the top pocket and my dental essentials in the bottom compartment,” she says. “The makeup bag feels sturdy, the exterior is very easy to clean and I appreciate that it has a transparent windows on each side so that I can always find the product I’m looking for.”

Unlike some makeup cases with multiple organization pouches, this case only offers two compartments. But it’s so spacious that you can easily fit up to five small bottles of face creams or sprays as well as multiple tubes and compacts in the top pocket. The bottom pocket comes in handy if you like to separate certain products from others (like keeping your hairspray away from your lipsticks). The top handle also makes it easy to tote to and from the bathroom. While this bag is small, it can be a bit bulky, so it’s not the best for smaller carry-on bags or backpacks.

Best Hanging Travel Makeup Bag

Versatile and detachable, bagsmart hanging travel makeup bag.

Dimensions:  11 x 3.7 x 7.9 inches |  Weight:  1.8 pounds |  Material:  Recycled polyester |  Closure:  Zip

  • Those who want vertical storage
  • Transparent compartments
  • Easy to clean
  • You need a more lightweight option

Whether you’re short on counter space in the hotel bathroom or you like to see your beauty products laid out vertically, this Bagsmart hanging travel makeup bag is a good solution. It has a 360-degree swivel hook and five zipped interior pockets that can hold a range of compacts, tubes or small bottles. The main interior pockets are conveniently built with elastic straps that hold your bottles upright and prevent spillage. For even more storage, the exterior pocket can fit make-up wipes or other accessories. Just keep in mind that this bag is on the heavier side, so it could be clunky if you pack in a lot.

Best Travel Makeup Bag For Organization

Multiple compartments for every type of product, relavel travel makeup case.

Dimensions:  10.3 x 9 x 3.6 inches |  Weight:  1.5 pounds |  Material:  Nylon, TPU |  Closure:  Zipper

  • Travelers who love organization
  • Plenty of storage
  • Carrying around smaller or less traditionally shaped products
  • You travel with a slim bag, as this case is on the larger side

If you travel with many different brushes, sponges and other cosmetic tools, this Relavel makeup case is well organized. It comes with five dividers that you can move around to best accommodate your products, and it’s spacious enough to fit multiple foundation bottles or serums, as well as several makeup brushes. You can even use the dividers to create smaller spaces for less traditionally shaped products, like egg-shaped beauty sponges or hair clips.

The exterior and interior fabrics on the case are both durable and waterproof, so you won’t have to worry about spills and the dividers are sturdy enough to keep everything in place. Take note that because it has so much storage, this bag is on the bulkier side, meaning it’s better suited for a checked bag rather than a carry-on.

Best Affordable Travel Makeup Bag

Great style and value.

Drunk Elephant

Drunk Elephant Midi Dopp Kit

Dimensions:  8 x 2.5 x 6 inches |  Weight:  Not listed |  Material:  Vegan leather, plastic|  Closure:  Zipper

  • Travelers on a budget
  • Transparency
  • Easy to clean material
  • You need more than one pocket

Drunk Elephant has cultivated a loyal following for its skincare products, and it’s also expanded into chic storage accessories, like this tidy dopp kit. It can easily slide into a weekender bag or backpack, and it’s deep enough to hold multiple bottles, compacts, tubes and brushes. It also clocks in at an appealing $20, making it the best value option on our list, and its exterior is waterproof, meaning you can pop it into your satchel for a beach trip. However, it does only come with one pocket, so it may not fit organizational needs if you’re bringing a variety of different makeup tools.

Best Compact Travel Makeup Bag

Makes smart use of small space.

  • You tend to overpack products

Some trips call for a natural look, and that’s where this stylish but compact toiletry organizer from Dagne Dover comes in. Shaped cylindrically, it can easily be popped into a tote or weekender, and it comes with a sturdy zip top and a top handle. While this bag is on the smaller side, it offers a surprising amount of organization, including six adjustable compartments, four elastic loops, an interior mesh pocket and a carabiner hook for hanging. It also comes in a variety of fun and poppy colors, like Tangerine, Deep Sea and Heatwave. Like most Dagne Dover products, it can only be spot cleaned, so make sure to follow the care instructions.

Best Travel Makeup Bag Set

  • Separating smaller items from larger ones
  • A wide opening for packing with ease
  • A stylish and elegant look
  • You’re on a budget—this set is on the pricier side

Different trips call for different looks, so having a set of travel makeup bags in different sizes comes in handy. This set has a larger bag that can hold up to four makeup bottles, four tubes, two or three compacts and multiple brushes, while the smaller case is great for compact items, like under-eye gels and serums. You can divide up your products into the two different bags and tote both along, or you can use each separately on different types of trips. The two cases stack inside each other for easy storage, and each is crafted from sophisticated pebbled leather (which can be monogrammed as well).

Best Pouch Travel Makeup Bag

Compact and waterproof, lululemon go getter pouch.

Dimensions:  8.7 x 3.3 x 6.3 inches |  Weight:  Not listed |  Material:  Recycled polyester |  Closure:  Zip

  • Easy to fit into a tote or weekender
  • You need more organization

Like its sporty apparel, Lululemon’s travel makeup pouch is well-designed for active days. It’s made of waterproof recycled polyester that easily wipes clean, and is small enough to fit into almost any personal item. Aside from its main pocket, in which you can fit several small makeup bottles, compacts and tubes, it also features a small front compartment where you can fit several small- to medium-sized brushes. At $38, it comes at an affordable price, too. Beside its main pocket and front compartment, though, it doesn’t feature any other dividers or organization, meaning you may need to rummage a bit if you overpack it.

Best Transparent Travel Makeup Bag

This clear cosmetics case from popular travel brand Calpak is fully transparent, so you can easily find what you’re looking for. It has two spacious interior pockets, an easy-to-grab handle and stylish piping colors around the edges. It’s also relatively lightweight for its size. The one downside: The product compartments fold together and face each other, so if you overpack, it can be difficult to close.

What To Consider When Buying A Travel Makeup Bag

Not every makeup bag is the right fit for travel. When selecting the best travel makeup bag, keep the following in mind:

Portability

Think about what type of bag or suitcase you’ll put your travel makeup bag in. Depending on the amount of space you have, you’ll want to go for a makeup bag that can easily fit into a personal item without adding too much weight or bulk. For small bags or totes, consider the Lululemon Go Getter Pouch or the Dagne Dover Mila Toiletry Organizer . If you’re planning on bringing a travel makeup bag in a carry-on suitcase, the Béis On The Go Essentials Case will easily fit, while you’ll want to store the larger Relavel Travel Makeup Case in a checked bag.

The amount of beauty products you usually bring on a trip is a great indicator of how much capacity you’ll need in a travel makeup bag. If you have a large amount of beauty tools, like makeup brushes or other grooming devices, you’ll want a bag with extra storage capacity. For lighter set-ups, a smaller makeup bag should suffice. You can even split your products into two cases by using a travel set like the Cuyana Travel Case Set . You can bring the smaller makeup bag with you for quick trips and the larger one for extended getaways.

Organization

Beauty products come in all shapes and sizes, from tubes to compacts. Depending on how you want to organize your products, you may go for a travel makeup bag with built-in organization. Both the Dagne Dover Mila Toiletry Organizer and the Relavel Travel Makeup Case feature adjustable compartments that allow you to organize your products by shape or size. For travelers who want to be able to examine their products all lined up, a hanging travel makeup case, like the Bagsmart Travel Makeup Bag , is a great option.

After you've organized your suitcase or weekender, the next and possibly biggest challenge is to pack your toiletry bag. While this might seem an afterthought, it's a pretty important step, especially if you don't want to arrive at your destination and realize you forgot to pack your sunscreen or open your bag to spilled body wash. Whether you're more of a minimalist or carry your entire 10-step beauty routine with you, there's something for everyone.

To help you find the right one, we tested 27 toiletry bags, rating them for capacity, design, portability, and value.

Best overall, sea to summit hanging toiletry bag.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5

Designed for organization

Tough exterior

Plenty of thoughtful additions

Nothing yet

Sea to Summit's Travelling Light Hanging Toiletry Bag impressed our testers, earning top marks across all categories. The Australian outdoor gear brand has been on a mission to build the lightest, most durable gear for more than three decades. Our testers loved how much space this lightweight toiletry bag has and its numerous pockets. "This is a great hanging bag because you can store different-size products inside without feeling like you're weighing the bag down," one tester noted.

The Travelling Light Bag, which weighs less than 5 ounces, is made from Cordura nylon. This material helps keep the weight down and offers stretch, allowing room for all the toiletries. Our testers liked the bag's convenient features, including a carrying handle and hanging hook. "There are tons of pockets, a mirror, hooks to hang the bag, and other unique features that are perfect for every trip," a tester concluded.

Best Budget

Wandf toiletry bag.

  • Design 4 /5
  • Portability 4 /5

Generous amount of space

Very lightweight

Not very compact

The first thing to know about WANDF's Toiletry Bag is that it has a ton of capacity, so much so that our testers joked that it could double as an overnight bag. Jests aside, this was a popular bag because of how much it holds and how little it weighs (just 3.6 ounces). "This is a great buy for someone who wants to bring a lot of skincare or other products along with normal toiletries," one tester said.

The bag's water-resistant nylon is thin but durable. It has three pockets for good organization and a handle for easier transportation. Our testers did say that it might be hard to fit in a smaller bag, especially if you take advantage of the size and pack it to maximum capacity. If you're looking for a larger-capacity toiletry bag or simply a budget bag, this was our testers' top pick.

Size: 9.5 x 5.9 x 4.7 inches | Weight: 3.6 ounces | Material: Water-resistant nylon

Bagsmart Toiletry Bag

Very spacious

Zippered mesh pockets are helpful

Sturdy yet compressible

Customer reviews complain about the color

This classic-looking toiletry bag impressed our testers with its durable materials, organization potential, and smart features, including a waterproof pocket. The large-capacity toiletry bag is made from water-resistant polyurethane leather, features double zippers in the main compartment, and has mesh holders to keep items like toothbrushes in place.

"The material is classic, zippers are easy to zip, and the compartment with the waterproof coating is very handy and will be easy to clean," one tester noted. "It's structured enough to keep organized but still flexible enough to fit easily in a weekender bag." Our testers said they'd pay more for this than the minimal list price. "It's a great price for something that feels durable and will last for a long time," one tester concluded.

Size: 10.25 x 6.25 x 5 inches | Weight: 0.62 pounds | Material: Polyurethane leather

Best Hanging

Bagsmart hanging toiletry bag.

Durable design

Easy to pack

Water-resistant material

Not the easiest to clean

Once you arrive at your hotel or vacation rental, finding a place to stash your toiletry bag can be tricky, especially if counter space is limited. Luckily, this bag's hook makes the most of limited or nonexistent space. This is a great way to keep items visible but still out of your way as you get dressed. The interior mesh pockets also help with visibility. There's even a smaller, removable compartment you can hang up.

"This bag fit all of the toiletries and still had room to spare, but only for travel-sized products," one tester said about the bag's capacity. "The design of this hanging bag was pleasantly sturdy." Our testers also liked the spacious organizational components and how the bag folds, which gives it a slim briefcase look. They also loved how easily the slender profile fits into a weekender bag.

Size: 12.6 x 9.1 x 4.3 inches | Weight: 15.8 ounces | Material: Polyester

Best Splurge

Away large toiletry bag.

Made of recycled materials

Stores bulky items well

Lets you see everything at a glance

Limited colors

For fans of the iconic suitcase brand, the toiletry bag is another worthy addition to your Away collection. Like many of Away's bags, this thoughtfully designed bag keeps your toiletries organized and separated. The clamshell opening displays items perfectly through the mesh and clear plastic interior pockets. The nylon material is easy to clean should you ever have a spill. Bonus: The bag can even be monogrammed on the front or back.

Thanks to some unique features, our testers loved how roomy this bag was. "I packed mostly large items, such as makeup brushes, foundation, and a compact mirror, and there was still tons of room to insert more," one tester reported. "There are different types of pockets inside the bag—one for makeup brushes, one clear pocket for makeup products, and others for whatever you'd like to put in."

The bag helped with organization, and our testers liked the top handle. "The fact that it can fit so many items and still not take up so much space says a lot about the bag. It can also carry a lot of weight," a tester noted. Our testers weren't the biggest fans of the nylon material but noted that it is water-resistant. And while they said bags with similar features could be found at a lower cost, they would still recommend this one. "I'd love to purchase it if it wasn't so pricey for a toiletry bag, but if you need organization and travel often, then this bag is a must," a tester concluded.

Size: 10.2 x 3.7 x 5.9 inches | Weight: 8.8 ounces | Material: Nylon

Best Organization

Peak design wash pouch.

Peak Design

Extra durable

Fits into other bags easily

Contains recycled materials

A bit on the pricey side

The first key to good organization is having plenty of room for all your toiletries. Peak Design's Wash Pouch offers exactly that, with our testers noting that they had plenty of room to fit all of their toiletries and then some. "I'd be able to put my skincare products in here along with several travel-sized toiletry bottles ," our tester said, noting that they loved the product's design. It also opens wide for easy packing and accessibility. "There were plenty of pockets and even a shallow zipper pocket to hold a toothbrush," our tester reported, also praising how it sits open upright on the counter on its own. Bonus: Despite the large size and roominess, it still packs down to a small size.

Size: 10.6 x 6 x 4.4 inches | Weight: 8.7 ounces | Material: Recycled, DWR-treated nylon

Best for Extended Trips

Dare to roam steward dopp kit.

Dare to Roam

Impressive capacity

Eco-friendly

Less likely to harbor microbes

Bulkier than other options

There's much to like about the Dare to Roam Steward Dopp Kit. It features responsibly sourced materials and ethically made construction. It uses antimicrobial and water-resistant materials—features we'd like to see in many more toiletry bags, considering the amount of liquid and moisture these containers are exposed to.

What our testers loved most about this particular toiletry bag was the amount of space available, making it ideal for extended trips. The main compartment has a ton of room and a two-way zipper entry. It also features side clips and adjustable webbing straps, making the bag expandable on both sides. Our testers had no problem fitting all their toiletries into the bag and then some. "This bag is designed well and is built to really hold up," a tester reported. "The handles and lightweight feel of the bag make it perfectly portable."

While this bag did take up a lot of space when packed in another bag, it's best used for extended trips on which travelers are likely to use larger luggage anyway.

Size: 4.5 x 8.7 x 4.7 inches | Weight: Not listed | Material: Polyester, nylon

Best for Camping

Matador flatpak zipper toiletry case.

Back Country

  • Capacity 4 /5

Stripped-down but serviceable

Built to last

One large pocket

May be too simplistic for some

Toiletry bags aren't only handy for traveling. They're also helpful when backpacking and camping. For that usage, we love Matador's FlatPak Toiletry Case. The FlatPak checks off three key boxes when looking for a camping- or backpacking-focused toiletry bag. It's super lightweight (1.1 ounces), it's fully waterproof, and it has one main compartment for easy access to all items. Simply put: It's a no-frills yet incredibly practical bag.

Our testers were impressed with the bag's capacity—it fits all toiletries without getting overly bulky. They also loved its durability, waterproof material, and how the bottom of the bag expands. "For someone who goes on lots of camping or rugged outdoor trips, this bag is a great value," one tester concluded.

Size: 9.5 x 6.75 x 3.5 inches | Weight: 1.1 ounces | Material: 30-denier Cordura nylon

Best Eco-Friendly

Cotopaxi nido accessory bag.

  • Portability 4.5 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

Nice internal organization

Not ideal for extended trips

Cotopaxi's marketing slogan is "Gear for Good." This dopp kit, which features 100 percent recycled materials, definitely falls into that category, but besides being a responsibly created toiletry bag, it's simply a good toiletry bag. The bag has three compartments to separate different items, fits a reasonable amount of toiletries, and has a convenient side carry handle. Another huge step toward planet friendliness is the longevity and durability of the product. We love that this toiletry bag is constructed to last many years and maybe decades.

Size: 9 x 6 x 5 inches | Weight: 6.5 ounces | Material: Recycled nylon with a TPU coating

Hitting it out of the park and claiming a perfect score on all our tests for capacity, design, portability, and value, the Sea to Summit Travelling Light Hanging Toiletry Bag is hard to beat. Another favorite of our testers for its generous capacity and reasonable price tag, the WANDF Toiletry Bag is light and comes in a range of bright and neutral colors.

To determine the products to include in this test, we researched the top-rated products on the market from multiple retailers, considered popular and traveler-loved brands, and relied on the knowledge of our travel editors and their experience with a variety of toiletry bags. We also aimed to include a variety of sizes, price points, and intended uses.

We tested all 27 toiletry bags in our New York City lab space. Bags were rated on a five-point scale and evaluated for capacity, design, portability, and overall value. We averaged scores across individual categories to give an overall score. Testers packed each bag with the types and quantities of toiletries that would last for a long weekend trip. Once the toiletry bags were packed, our testers took notes on how full the bags were and any unique organizational or structural features. Lastly, they placed the toiletry bags in weekender bags and carried them around to get a sense of how heavy the toiletry bags felt and how easily they could be packed into other pieces of luggage.

BÉIS Cosmetic Case : This case is sturdily built with a couple of thoughtful extras like a standing mirror and a separate sleeve for makeup brushes. With its generous capacity comes a larger footprint, which may be problematic in smaller carry-ons or weekenders. Finally, we felt the price was too high for the quality of the materials.

Calpak Clear Cosmetics Case : Another spacious pick, our tester could appreciate the capacity of this bag with its convenient carrying handle, though it needs to be packed full to keep the contents from jostling around wildly. The design and internal organization were OK but not as good as some others.

Dagne Dover Hunter Toiletry Bag : Overall, we liked the Hunter Bag. The soft neoprene exterior felt durable and easy to clean. The interior features a few pockets and two removable zipper pouches, which our tester said they would probably leave out to make better use of the space.

Everlane ReNew Catch-All Case : True to its name, the Catch-All is a roomy yet simple option with both internal and external pockets. It isn't particularly structured, so it would slip nicely into any other bag, but we worry the contents could easily be damaged or crushed.

State Bags Benson Dopp Kit : The Benson Dopp Kit is a hanging bag with a solid capacity and a well-designed interior. Because of its size, this isn't the ideal option for short trips, and we found similar models that just edged out this pick in terms of the quality of materials and design.

Tumi Response Travel Kit : Our testers were hard-pressed to find anything negative about this bag. It features a clamshell opening for easy packing, is roomy but remains a good choice for weekend getaways, and offers enough structure to protect your toiletries. The real downside is the luxury price, which we found hard to swallow.

What to Look For in a Toiletry Bag

Whether you want something you can quickly toss products into or a hyper-organized toiletry bag with ample pocket space is up to you, but it’s important to think about how organized you usually are. Our advice? Look at how your purse or backpack is organized (i.e., is it a massive tote you throw everything into, or is everything organized in its own little pocket or bag?) to figure out how you naturally travel.

TSA Requirements

If you're carrying your luggage on a flight with you, be sure your items meet TSA requirements —one quart-sized bag of containers holding liquids in quantities of no more than 3.4 ounces. If you are checking your luggage, some of the large-capacity bags on this list can come in handy for packing larger liquids. However, rather than putting all your products into a flimsy plastic bag, opt for a reusable zippered bag instead.

Hanging Capability

Sometimes, the hotel you're staying at won't have enough counter space for a toiletry bag, especially if you're traveling with others. If you want to ensure that things don’t get too cluttered, consider a bag that can hang from the towel hooks on the back of the bathroom door. Bonus: You can use it to free up space at home, too.

Because they are frequently in wet and humid surroundings, most toiletry bags are pretty easy to clean thanks to the functional materials used to make them. Simply wipe down the interior, usually made of nylon with a water-resistant coating. Toiletry bags that are made of faux or genuine leather or polyester can be spot-cleaned.

If you plan to fly and take your liquids onboard with you, make sure to follow the TSA requirements, which allow one quart-sized bag of containers up to 3.4 ounces each. While it's not required to have a clear toiletry bag, if your bag is pulled for further inspection, it might speed up the process if the security agent can easily see what you've packed.

To recommend the best toiletry bags out there, we tested 27 items across various brands and price points in our New York City lab space, scoring each on its capacity, durability, portability, and value.

The Best Toiletry Bags

Kaitlyn Wells

By Kaitlyn Wells

After nine years of testing, we know that no one toiletry bag works for all travelers.

To find the best solutions for carrying what is, essentially, a bathroom in a bag, we stuffed, shook, dunked, and examined toiletry bags meant for all sorts of travel scenarios.

After researching 69 and testing 23, we chose five bags that we liked for their style, packability, and quality of construction.

We looked at a variety of zippered sacks, hanging bags, and structured, standing toiletry cases that open from above (what we’re calling “dopp kits”).

We selected picks for a variety of travelers and those using it in their bathroom: a versatile bag for most travel situations , a dopp kit with loads of organizational compartments , an open-style dopp kit with plenty of space for larger toiletries , a compact hanging bag for light packers , and a hanging bag big enough for a family to share .

The research

The most versatile toiletry bag: state bags bensen toiletry kit, best dopp kit for organization: peak design wash pouch, best dopp kit if you need more space: topo designs dopp kit, the lightest toiletry bag: sea to summit hanging toiletry bag (small), the best bag for couples and families: l.l.bean personal organizer toiletry bag (medium), how we picked and tested, what to look forward to, the competition.

Our pick for most versatile toiletry bag, the State Bags Bensen Dopp Kit, shown upright on a bathroom countertop near a sink.

The most versatile toiletry bag.

This bag is not, by our definition, a dopp kit, since it opens flat, like a book. Yet it offers organizational options (including a detachable pouch, handy for quick trips) that should work for light and heavy packers alike.

Buying Options

Get this if: You want a bag for both long and short trips.

Why it’s great: Though it’s not the best bag for every type of trip, the State Bags Bensen Toiletry Kit is a good option for more scenarios than any other bag we tested. It’s also a great choice for travelers who need a versatile kit that can hold enough for longer excursions as well as keep smaller, travel-size items organized.

The bag (which is made of nylon, polyster, or cotton, depending on what color you pick) unzips flat like a textbook (7 by 9 by 3 inches) instead of opening at the top, like a traditional brick-shaped dopp kit. So it offers more flexibility to stash larger and wider items, like a full-size shampoo bottle, shaving cream canister, or large makeup palette. It also has a hook, so you can hang it from a towel rack. To keep your gear organized, one side of the toiletry bag has two open pockets, and the other has a mesh zip pocket. When we stuffed the main compartment full of toiletries, the seams didn’t pucker, and it was still easy to zip closed.

There’s also a removable plastic pouch that holds up to four 2.7-ounce travel bottles. When we first tested this bag, in 2019, the plastic pouch was translucent; we loved that you could easily unsnap it for airport security checks without unloading the entire bag. In later versions of the bag, the plastic was too opaque to serve that purpose. But as of 2023, only one of the dozen or so color options (the nylon black/floral) incorporates that opaque plastic. The other options all now come with a translucent pouch.

Our pick for most versatile toiletry bag, the State Bags Bensen Dopp Kit, shown opened and hanging on a bathroom wall.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: This bag is the most expensive of our picks. The Bensen’s plastic hook didn’t break in our tests, but it’s still thinner (by a millimeter or two) than those on most of the hanging bags we reviewed. Under pressure, it bends more easily than most of the other hooks, so we’ll be watching how it holds up during long-term testing.

The detachable plastic pouch isn’t as waterproof as it appears. The pouch’s edges are lined in fabric, which sops up liquids like a sponge before leaking the contents everywhere.

Capacity: State Bags couldn’t tell us the capacity; we estimate it to be 3.5 liters.

Dimensions: 9 by 7 by 3 inches

Colors: about 20 frequently changing options—some solid, some mulit-colored, and some printed with patterns

A teal grey Peak Design Wash Pouch sitting on a tile bathroom counter.

Peak Design Wash Pouch

Countertop organization.

Minimalist-looking on the outside, this water-resistant dopp kit has lots of specialized pockets inside to hold—and keep safely separate—your essentials. Although it has a hook, it works best sitting on a bathroom counter.

Get this if: You want a water-resistant toiletry case with lots of pockets and you don’t usually need or want to hang your bag.

Why it’s great: The Peak Design Wash Pouch has several organizational pockets for your sundries; it was the most thoughtfully designed dopp-style bag we tested. Most dopp kits have at most one small pocket in addition to their main compartment, but this bag kept our items separated, so that our toothbrush didn’t have to mingle in the same pocket as our razor.

The toiletry bag opens like an accordion, and its wide base keeps it upright even when it’s full. There’s an open compartment on one side of the bag that’s big enough to hold a 12-ounce shampoo bottle or an electric razor. The other side has three mesh pockets great for keeping travel toiletries in their place, as well as a large zip pocket for stashing cotton swabs and facial tissues. Testers were pleasantly surprised to learn the bag is divided in half by a magnetically closed toothbrush pocket; it doesn’t seal completely, though, so moisture can evaporate. On the outside, there’s a pocket for a small beard trimmer or body razor, so you won’t cut yourself on a blade when digging through the main compartment for tweezers. “I love it. The compartments seem thoughtfully conceived,” said Wirecutter’s Winnie Yang. “It could hold enough for all three of us in my family times two.”

The teal grey peak design toiletry bag hung from a shower shelf.

This dopp kit is also tough. It’s made of recycled, 200-denier nylon and coated with durable water repellent (DWR), so it’s light and flexible, and water-resistant too. (There weren’t any leaks in our tests.) It has large zippers and reinforced pull tabs that didn’t snap off when we tugged hard. The internal mesh pockets are coated in silicone, so it’s easier to wipe them clean than dealing with traditional mesh pockets. As a bonus, all pockets turn inside out for cleaning.

The Peak Design Wash Pouch has a lifetime warranty.

A close up of three toiletry bag hooks on a shower shelf.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The Peak Design’s hook has a shallower shape than the hooks on our other picks, so it’s more likely to slide off a towel bar when, say, you’re digging for a contacts case at the bottom of the bag. (Peak Design’s arc radius is roughly 200 degrees; the hook on the L.L.Bean Personal Organizer , by contrast, has an arc of 270 degrees.) We preferred to use it like a dopp kit, letting it sit on the counter; that way, it was easy to access all its different compartments without worrying about it slipping and scattering our toiletries.

A brown blue and red Topo Designs Dopp Kit sitting on a bathroom counter.

Topo Designs Dopp Kit

An expansive dopp kit.

This contemporary-looking bag packs down flat but is still roomier when expanded than most of the dopp kits we tested. It does, however, lack pockets and a hook.

Get this if: You’re a heavy packer who doesn’t need a lot of organizational compartments.

Why it’s great: The Topo Designs Dopp Kit is fun to look at. It’s shaped like a prism and comes in solid colors or complementary color combos. It remains upright when full, yet packs completely flat for storage. Its spacious main interior holds oblong toiletries well, including a full-size hair spray canister or electric razor kit. And the structure has some give, so you can stuff the bag into sharp suitcase corners without compromising packing space.

The unzipped topo designs dopp kit showing toiletries and a brush inside.

The dopp kit is covered in an abrasion-resistant 1,000-denier nylon that’s textured like canvas and zips closed with a heavy-duty YKK zipper. The inside of the kit is lined in nylon pack cloth for easy cleaning; it doesn’t trap moisture or leak between layers. There’s also a long strap that makes it easier to grip the bag with one hand. And it has a lifetime warranty against manufacturer defects.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Although the bag’s nylon lining helped trap small leaks, bigger spills may still seep through the bag’s zipper teeth. Like most dopp kits we’ve seen, this one has no hook. Unlike most dopp kits, though, this one has no pockets at all apart from the main compartment. If you prefer a toiletry bag that isn’t a gaping hole, opt for one of our other picks instead.

A lime green Sea to Summit Travelling Light Hanging Toiletry Bag sitting on a bathroom counter.

Sea to Summit Hanging Toiletry Bag (small)

A space-saving hanging bag.

This lightweight, well-organized bag fits a week’s worth of travel-size toiletries into a compact package. It’s meant to be hung, which makes it good for tight spaces, but it doesn’t have much in the way of internal structure.

Get this if: You’re a light packer who wants to hang up your bag for easy access.

Why it’s great: The Sea to Summit Hanging Toiletry Bag (small) is our previous top pick, and we still love it. It’s compact, holds enough gear for a week-long trip, and is durable.

Unassuming in size and appearance, the Sea to Summit is small enough to stash in a backpack or laptop bag, but it holds enough travel-size toiletries to keep us supplied for a week. Once you’ve arrived at your destination, you can open it and hang it from a shower curtain or towel rod to easily see and grab your items. It comes with a shatterproof mirror, two micro-mesh zip pockets and an open pocket for toothbrushes, lip balm, and tweezers, and a large compartment for bulky lotions and hair care products.

The sea to summit bag hanging open from a shower shelf.

This toiletry bag is also tougher than it looks. Its ripstop nylon exterior didn’t tear in our tests. And the seams didn’t give when we stuffed it full of travel toiletry bottles, a toothbrush, toothpaste, facial tissues, and more. This bag comes with a lifetime guarantee.

Long-term test notes: Wirecutter’s Shannon Palus traveled with the Sea to Summit toiletry bag for two months, including a trip to Europe and weekend trips, and said she loved it: “I like how small it is, I can easily throw it in a backpack so I have meds and makeup et cetera on the plane too. There are so many random pockets, it’s easy to stash extra hair ties or a back-up $20 and not have them get lost. One complaint: One of the ties on a zipper broke off almost immediately.”

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The Sea to Summit weighs just under 3 ounces, making it lighter than our most-versatile hanging-bag pick, the State Bags Benson Dopp Kit . Its willowy shape becomes lumpy when packed to the brim with travel toiletries, so some people may prefer a bag with more structure.

And though small spills are no match for this bag’s water-resistant exterior, bigger messes may be a problem because moisture leaks through the zipper.

A blue and white L.L.Bean Personal Organizer Toiletry Bag sitting on a bathroom counter.

L.L.Bean Personal Organizer Toiletry Bag

A big bag to share.

This bag is inexpensive and sturdily constructed, and it holds enough to supply multiple users.

Get this if: You’re packing for a beach getaway for two or a family trip to a theme park.

Why it’s great: We like the L.L.Bean Personal Organizer Toiletry Bag because it’s big enough to hold a family of four’s bathroom essentials and it’s long-lasting.

With 6 liters of capacity, the medium-size L.L.Bean toiletry bag offers more room than the Peak Design and Topo bags combined. Our testers thought the bag was intimidatingly large for solo travel and preferred its roomy size for excursions with partners or a family. There’s plenty of space for packing full-size bathroom essentials to share among the group. We fit one full-size bottle each of shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, and hair spray into this bag and still had room to add a hairbrush. And it’s loaded with storage features, so everything has its place. It has a wide handle, three external pockets, two interior waterproof zip pockets, a zip mesh pouch, and three small mesh pockets for taller toiletries, like a hairspray canister or sunscreen. There’s also a hook, removable shower caddy, and a removable mirror.

The sea to summit toiletry bag hanging open from a shower shelf.

The bag is heavy when crammed full, but when we suspended the bag (stuffed with shampoo, toothpaste, hair spray, and more ) by its metal hook for an hour, the hook didn’t break or bend. Its YKK zippers skate across the teeth, making it easy to open and close when full. And the bag’s abrasion-resistant cover didn’t scuff in our drop tests. The L.L.Bean toiletry bag has a one-year warranty.

A close up of the removable shower caddy on the l.l. bean toiletry bag.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: This toiletry bag has two external side pockets for stashing smaller items, like lotions or facial tissues. But they’re too stubby for a regular toothbrush, so if that’s where you want to pack your toothbrush, you’ll need a travel-size one instead.

While moisture from a spill did bead up on the surface of this toiletry bag, it’s not completely waterproof. Major spills are still a problem, as liquids leak through the zipper teeth.

Six different colors and styles of toiletry bags organized in a grid on a tile floor.

After nine years of reviewing toiletry bags, we have a solid foundation in what travelers value in a bag. Still, we approached this guide as first-timers and read dozens of travel blogs, message boards, and bag review guides. We also consulted a panel made up of occasional travelers and frequent fliers to find out what matters to them the most, whether traveling across town or across the continent.

From there, we compiled a list of 69 different toiletry bags and divided them into four categories: plain bags, clear TSA-approved bags, dopp kits, and hanging bags. We reviewed each contender’s design, size, weight, storage capacity, materials, notable features (like a travel shower caddy or extended warranty), availability across retailers, and third-party reviews. We narrowed it down to 23 of the best-reviewed toiletry bags with a mix of features to accommodate different kinds of uses and various tastes in style. Then we called in the bags and tested them using the following criteria:

Overall design and construction: We reviewed each bag’s materials, the quality of the seams, and smoothness of the zippers, as well as the usefulness of each compartment. We also considered the bag’s weight, the sturdiness of its hook (if it had one), and color options, wanting to accommodate a range of tastes.

Bag capacity: We filled each bag with a selection of travel-size or full-size toiletries, depending on the size of the bag. Most bags contained a combination of the following toiletries: a toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, body razor, shaving cream, shampoo, conditioner, hair spray, facial tissues, feminine hygiene products, condoms, cotton swabs, a hairbrush, hairpins and ties, sunscreen, lotion, and a pill bottle.

Shape retention and durability: We closed each bag when stuffed full of gear and noted which bags deformed and if the seams puckered or tore under pressure. If the bag had a hook, we hung it up for at least half a day and checked both the bag and hook for structural integrity.

Contents retention: We shook each bag around and dropped it on the ground to see if the contents spilled out or became rearranged during handling.

Waterproofing: We ran each bag under a kitchen faucet for a few seconds to see how well the exterior repelled water. Then we spilled a tablespoon of water inside each bag, closed it, and shook it to see how easily it would leak a less viscous liquid (like spilled eye-makeup remover or toner).

Community review: We asked a panel of staffers with varying travel needs and family sizes to look at the bags from our list and offer feedback.

We plan to call in and test new toiletry bags from Aer, Eagle Creek, and other companies. We’re also taking a look at a smaller version of one of our picks, Peak Design’s Wash Pouch.

The Matador FlatPak Toiletry Case is the thinnest and lightest bag we tested and folds flat like a sheet of paper when empty. Its roll-top design ensures there’s no wasted space, and it snaps closed with a YKK buckle. But the roll-top unfurled easily during our tests, spilling smaller items, like travel toothpaste, onto the floor.

TSA-approved clear bags

The CableintheBay TSA-Approved Clear Toiletry Bag is made of plastic that’s thinner than other clear bags we tested, so it’s easier to puncture the bag when cramming it into a suitcase. It also leaked during our spill tests.

The Tom Bihn Clear 3D Organizer Cube is made of a ballistic nylon, which is scuff-proof and tear-resistant, and it has YKK zippers, so it’ll outlast most other toiletry bags. But at just 7 by 4 by 2 inches, it’s the smallest bag we tested and barely had enough room for three travel-size toiletries. It’s also twice as expensive as other clear bags.

The Travel Smart by Conair TS78SK Transparent Sundry Bag is the largest bag in this category, at 9.75 by 6.33 by 3.66 inches. A TSA spokesperson recommended that all clear toiletry bags remain under 1 quart (typically 6 by 9 inches), and we don’t want to risk getting detained at the security checkpoint with the wrong-size bag.

The Aer Dopp Kit has narrow dual compartments that were less spacious than our dopp kit pick from Peak Design. Its compartments couldn’t hold bulky pill bottles and shaving cream canisters. And it still leaked despite its water-resistant exterior. (Since our testing, Aer has redesigned the kit—now called the Dopp Kit 2 . We’ll take a look at it soon.)

In previous years, the Eagle Creek Pack-It Specter Quick Trip was our budget pick. It has since been replaced by the Eagle Creek Pack-It Reveal Quick Trip ; we’ll be testing that model soon.

The Herschel Supply Chapter Travel Kit 5L holds more than any other dopp kit we tested, so it’s large enough for a couple to share on an extended getaway. But it isn’t leak-proof, and the bag tips over easily when full of gear.

The KomalC Leather Toiletry Bag is roomy, with enough space for full-size toiletries. But the zippers are clunky, and the bag’s lid is a flap-top design that doesn’t close completely.

The Container Store Toiletry Kit features dual compartments, which aren’t as roomy as other dopp kits we tested. The stitching was poor and unraveled with a quick tug.

The Vetelli Leather Toiletry Bag has wide storage compartments, and it didn’t leak during our tests. But those panelists who would buy a leather bag preferred the real leather of our (now-discontinued) pick from Cuyana over Vetelli’s faux leather bag; those who wanted an easier-to-clean option would have gone with one of our nylon or plastic picks.

Hanging bags

The AmazonBasics Hanging Toiletry Kit doesn’t have as many storage pockets as other bags we tested, and the bag leaked during our moisture tests.

The Freegrace Hanging Toiletry Bag is the largest bag tested, so it holds enough toiletries for a family trip. But its size makes it cumbersome to carry when full. The storage compartments are narrow, so it’s harder to fit bulky or odd-shaped items, like wide-tooth combs or hair gel, inside. The bag also leaked during our tests.

We liked the toughness of the Tom Bihn Deluxe Spiff Kit , with its YKK zippers, ripstop fabric, and reinforced carry handles. There’s also a fold-out shelf covered in Velcro that keeps four 1-ounce jars from falling to the floor. Our testers thought the jars were too small, though, and not worth the additional cost. The bag also leaked during our tests.

What to look for in a travel toiletry bag

Material: When looking for a travel toiletry bag, first think about the material. “A bag that’s easy to clean will last you a long longer,” says New York-based travel journalist Nneya Richards . Richards recommends materials like nylon or neoprene, which are water-resistant. Kim Tate , the Seattle-based travel writer and blogger behind Stuffed Suitcase , prefers options made from vinyl, a material that is durable and more often than not waterproof.

{{post.sponsorText}}

Size and weight: You’ll also want a travel toiletry bag with enough room for the toiletries you’re taking with you. A small toiletry bag will save you space, but if you’re packing larger toiletries or for a longer trip, you may want to opt for a larger kit—keeping in mind that it will take up more room in your bag. Size aside, select something lightweight; many of the options on this list are less than half a pound when empty.

Additional features: Finally, consider the additional features that’ll make traveling easier. For example, a toiletry bag with a hook or handle will allow you to hang it up and maximize counter space, while one with transparent panels can offer a clear view of your essentials for easy access. Some also offer organizational options, like compartments, pockets, or even separate pouches to keep your things in order.

Whatever your preference, there’s something for every type of traveler on this list. Scroll on for the eight best toiletry bags, as recommended by well-traveled experts.

Nomatic Toiletry Bag 2.0

Material: Not specified | Size: 10.5” L x 5” W x 1.7” H (Small) and 10.5” L x 5” W x 3.1” H (Standard) | Weight: 9.5 oz. (Small) and 11.3 oz. (Regular)

Nomatic is a favorite brand of Kesi Irvin , travel writer and owner of the online travel blog Kesi To and Fro , and its toiletry bag has the one thing she typically looks for in a kit—a hanging component. “If I’m moving around from place to place, I like having the option to hang my toiletry bag up so I can see all the products I have,” she shares. The bag boasts a convenient hanging strap to help you save counter space while on your trip and several zippered pockets to neatly store your items. Plus, its narrow profile will allow you to squeeze it into your suitcase without compromising packing space. While the manufacturer doesn’t specify the material of the bag, it’s designed to be water-resistant. It comes in two sizes, and, as an added bonus, a lifetime warranty.

eBags Pack-It-Flat Toiletry Kit

Material: Nylon | Size: 14” L x 9.25” W x 2.2” H | Weight: 10 oz.

Tate has long relied on this toiletry bag on her travels. “It has a very slim profile that won’t take up much luggage space,” she explains. While unassuming in size and appearance, it has spacious internal compartments that can hold enough for shorter or longer excursions—something to which Tate can personally attest. “It has a zipper compartment on the left, where I would keep all my skincare products, a larger zipper compartment in the middle for my deodorant and larger items, and then two zipper compartments on the right to hold my toothpaste and eye-care products,” she says. To add to its functionality, it has a hook and removable pocket mirror.

Available colors: 4

  • Slim profile
  • Spacious internal compartments
  • Can’t stand upright on its own

Dagne Dover Hunter Neoprene Toiletry Bag

Material: Neoprene | Size: 7.5” L x 4” W x 4.5” H (Small) and 9” L x 4.75” W x 5.5” H (Large) | Weight: 5 oz. (Small) and 7 oz. (Large)

I use and love this Dagne Dover toiletry bag. While I’m by no means a travel expert, it’s withstood years of long road trips and international journeys. The bag is made from water-resistant neoprene to contain spills, and it has a sturdy structure and multiple compartments to keep my things from jostling around. Plus, it zips open—and stays open—for easy access. I own the large version, which has enough space for all my beauty and personal-care products, with compartments to keep things like my razor and toothbrush from touching. A bonus: The large version comes with two additional pouches, while the smaller version includes one pouch, and both come in several stylish colors.

If anything, the bag neither has a hook nor a handle to hang it with—and if this is important to you, you might prefer the Seoul Dopp Kit , which has the stamp of approval from Richards. This particular product is made from water-resistant nylon, and it features a swivel hook and multiple storage compartments. You can shop it in two sizes and four colors, including black, gray, green, and pink.

Available colors: 9

  • Multiple interior compartments
  • Comes with additional pouches for storage
  • No hanging component

Queboom Travel Makeup Bag

Material: Not specified | Size: 9” L x 6” W x 3.1”H (Standard) and 9.4” L x 7” W x 5.5” H (Large) | Weight: 5.3 oz.

If you’re looking for something more affordable, this travel-friendly toiletry bag offers some of the convenient features of pricier options at a lower cost. It also comes recommended by Abigail A. of the blog The Lady Who Travels . It’s made from a waterproof material, and it offers a considerable space for your beauty products and a separate compartment for makeup brushes. The kit comes in two sizes: a smaller, more travel-friendly design and a larger model with more storage space, or for a few more dollars, you can purchase it as a set of two. With 12 colors, you’re sure to find an option to match your personal style. The bag folds flat when not in use to conserve space, but it also lacks the structure and compartments of most options on this list—a tradeoff for the price.

Available colors: 12

  • Separate compartment for makeup brushes
  • Folds flat when not in use
  • Minimal organizational compartments

Bagsmart Toiletry Bag

Material: Not specified | Size: 10.2” L x 4.3” W x 6.3” H (Basic), 11.8” L x 7” W x 7” H (Standard), 11.8” L x ” 5.9 x 7” H (Large) | Weight: 5.6 oz. (Basic), 10.2 (Standard), 11.7 oz. (Large)

Another recommendation from A. is this toiletry bag from Bagsmart. It’s made from a water-resistant material, and it comes in three sizes, with the standard- and large-size options boasting a separate compartment with elastic loops to hold smaller or more slender items, such as a toothbrush, razor, or makeup brushes. Each of the three options have interior mesh pockets, along with a large exterior zippered pocket lined with a waterproof layer that is great for breakable and spill-prone products. The bag is well-structured too, with a wide base that keeps it upright and prevents it from tipping over even when full. Shop it in four solid colors, including black, navy blue, pink, and gray.

  • Waterproof exterior pocket
  • Multiple organizational compartments

The Daily Edit Black Clear Travel Case

Originally $99, now $50

Material: PVC (with leather trim) | Size: 8.4” L x 3.3” W” x 3.3” H | Weight: Not specified

Travel journalist and TV host Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon of JetSetSarah recommends and uses this pick from The Daily Edit, which meets all her requirements of a good travel toiletry bag: it is transparent to offer a clear view of packed items; it has a zipper that runs all around the three sides of the bag for easy access; and it is durable to withstand repeated usage. “As an added bonus, you can personalize it,” she says, and you can have the letters of your choosing stamped onto the bag. The bag, constructed from PVC, opens up to two roomy compartments, one of which has an elastic strap to secure smaller items in place. The bag is finished with a black leather trim and gold hardware, and though it only comes in one size, Greaves-Gabbadon says is ideal for carry-on travel.

  • Water-resistant construction
  • Offers a clear view of contents
  • Personalizable
  • Only one size and color

Truffle Clarity Jetset Case

Material: PVC (with leather or nylon trim) | Size: 2.5” L x 7.5” W x 2” H (Mini), 5.2” L x 7.5” W x 2” H (Standard), 6” L x 9” W x 2” H (Large), and 6” L x 9” W x 3.” 3.75” H (Jumbo) | Weight: Not specified

Truffle Co.’s toiletry bags come in four sizes, the most of our picks of the list—and they are recommended by Greaves-Gabbadon. Like the previous recommendation, the bag features transparent windows so you can instantly see what’s inside and a zipper that runs around three sides. Plus, the standard option is just the right size for liquids and gels that comply with the TSA 3-1-1 rules . Size aside, you can choose between a leather and nylon trim and several eye-catching colors for each of the available options. The biggest downside to this bag is the lack of compartments to keep items separate and in place, but if you typically pack light, it shouldn’t be much of an issue for you.

Available colors: 8

  • TSA-friendly design
  • Available in four sizes
  • No internal organization

Anya Hindmarch In-Flight Case

Material: Plastic | Size: 3.1” L x 8.4” W x 4.5” H | Weight: Not specified

Anya Hindmarch is known for creating stylish, albeit pricey, storage systems. If money is no object and you’re looking to organize the contents of your carry-on, consider the In-Flight Case, which started Greaves-Gabbadon’s “lust” for travel toiletry bags. The water-resistant bag, made specifically for carry-on use, is fully transparent for easy visibility and features two roomy compartments with zippers that run along the three sides of the bag. According to Greaves-Gabbadon, each section is equivalent in size to a quart-size Ziploc bag to carry 3.4-ounce liquids and gels on board an airplane without risking confiscation by TSA. If you visit the brand’s website, you can also personalize the bag with a phrase or your name—it’ll just cost you a bit extra.

Behind the Scenes

Why trust people.

  • What Is PEOPLE Tested?

People / Brian Kopinski

There are many travel makeup bags designed to transport your beloved cosmetics for glam on the go. These products are made to keep your products intact and organized on your journey.

Beyond choosing a high-quality case, celebrity makeup artist Neil Scibelli suggests swapping out some of your usual products with multi-use alternatives. “Think of things like tinted moisturizers with sunscreen, lip, eye, and cheek products, and perhaps a palette that offers multiple colors that you can use across your trip,” says Scibelli. Another travel tip from Scibelli is to replace powder items with creams. “Items like powder bronzers and blushes can easily crack during travel, so if you can switch to cream bronzers and cream blush — that can be super helpful."

We tested 26 of the most popular travel makeup bags based on durability, design, portability, capacity, and price to see which held up the best. After the eyeshadow dust settled and liquid foundation explosions were cleaned up, we found our best overall picks.

Read on for the best travel makeup bags that PEOPLE tested and expert advice on how to pack your makeup for your next getaway.

Best Overall

Relavel travel makeup case.

  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5
  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Portability 5 /5

External padding keeps makeup from breaking

Zipper top opens fully so all products are visible

Easy to clean

Bulky shape is harder to pack

Backpack straps not super stable

This Train Case from Relavel blew us away during testing. We love how easy it is to store, organize, and access the makeup and brushes. The zipper top opens fully so you can see everything at a glance. We really appreciate the individual brush holders and easy-to-clean plastic protective cover, too.

This travel makeup bag is an organizational dream. The individual dividers can be moved around and customized to best fit and secure all your products. During testing, this case fits an impressive seven palettes, a whole makeup brush collection , two foundation bottles, five toiletry bottles, over 15 lipsticks, an eyelash curler, hair spray, and a travel-sized moisturizer bottle. The exterior and interior fabrics on this case feel high quality and durable, and the waterproof surfaces are easy to clean.

The internal organization will keep your products securely in place, while the exterior padding will provide a safety cushion. In our drop and shake tests, none of the makeup products broke or spilled. The only possible drawback for us is that the bulkier, square shape would fit best in your checked luggage instead of a backpack.

How It's Held Up

After five months of use, this Relavel case has become our tester’s everyday makeup bag. She appreciates how it neatly stores her most-used makeup tools in pockets and a double-layer compartment. Even when she fills the case, it’s still easy to zip. She has packed the Relavel in a duffel bag, carry-on suitcase, and backpack, and it has adequately protected all her products during travel. After five months, the exterior still looks great, and the zippers operate smoothly.

Best Overall, Runner-Up

Béis the cosmetic case.

Faux leather exterior still looks new after multiple drop tests

Main storage compartment keeps products protected

Super easy to clean

Not much organization or separation of the main compartment

Takes up a lot of backpack space

Shay Mitchell's brand, Béis, is known for its beloved Weekender Bags — and its cosmetic case was also a front-runner in our tests, scoring high marks across the board. This case is super easy to open, close, and pack. We love the wide-open central compartment that makes tossing in all your hair and makeup essentials an absolute breeze.

We really like the removable compartment for storing brushes and the additional zip pocket for added storage. The bottom of the case has two smaller sleeve pockets but doesn’t offer any other organization. While it doesn’t have many compartments, this case can really pack in the products. The luxurious feel of the faux leather elevates this travel makeup bag. We also love that it is available in nine different colors to match your style and mood.

Overall, it feels sturdy and durable and is easy to clean. During our drop and shake tests, nothing broke or spilled, which really impressed us, considering the main cavity didn’t have any additional compartments to keep products in place. This Béis makeup case offers ample storage, so its bigger size fits best in suitcases or luggage.

This Béis case has come in handy during the three trips our tester has taken in the past five months. She previously traveled with two cases, one for skincare and another for makeup, but this spacious bag holds it all. Through all her travels, it has remained clean and sturdy, with no noticeable imperfections.

Size: 9.5 x 4 x 7 inches | Weight: 1.38 lbs. | Material: PU leather, PVC, lining: poly with water-resistant finish | Closure: Double U-zip

Best Budget

Narwey travel makeup bag.

  • Design 2 /5

Impressive capacity but still easy to pack in a backpack or carry-on

Full zipper closure gives easy access to contents

Kept makeup secure during testing

No separate organization compartments or padding

For a super inexpensive price, this Narwey Travel Makeup Bag will get your makeup to and from your destination safely and with ease. This bag has a full zipper closure that is easy to open and provides full access to everything. The exterior fabric is water-resistant and easy to clean.

The main compartment of this travel makeup bag is 3.5 inches deep, which is generous compared to some other bags we tested. Separate brush pouches with a PVC protective cover and an additional smaller zipper pouch offer some organization. There isn’t any designated organization to the main compartment, but we still found it holds quite a bit. We were able to fit two full sets of face and eye brushes (19 brushes in total), two face palettes, a color-correcting palette, three eyeliners, four lipsticks, a mascara, and a lash curler . The capacity for the case is phenomenal, while still being compact enough to put into a day pack.

Size: 9 x 6.7 x 3.5 inches | Weight: 7.8 oz. | Material: Not listed | Closure: Full double zip

Best Organization Features

Dagne dover mila toiletry organizer.

Dagne Dover

  • Capacity 4 /5

Dividers keep products organized and secure

Compartment dividers are removable for added space

Upright design is easy to pack and fit into smaller luggage and backpacks

Narrow, upright design couldn’t accommodate as many products

Dagne Dover bags are loved for being high-quality, aesthetically pleasing, and eco-conscious. Their Mila Toiletry Organizer continues in that legacy and delivered an impressive organization throughout our testing process. Available in six colors, we love the upright design that proves much more spacious than it appears. The full zipper top opening makes packing, viewing, and accessing the products super easy.

The separate compartments make organizing simple and keep the products securely in place. Even better, the compartment dividers are removable for easy cleaning and maximum storage. The padded exterior not only gives a hint of that trendy athleisure aesthetic but also offers added protection in transit.

During testing, we fit four makeup brushes, two makeup palettes, one bottle of foundation, one eyelash curler, one mascara, three lipsticks, four small toiletry bottles, and one hairspray in this bag. This is impressive, considering the size. We did note that the bag's narrower design didn’t hold quite as much as other larger bags we tested. (The brand does offer a larger size ).

During five months of use, our tester became more and more impressed with the Mila bag. While the bag isn’t very wide, its height and the removable and adjustable slots make organization a breeze. She appreciated the high-quality material and capacity of the bag, which fit more than expected. The bag is easy to pack and keeps all her products secure and protected during travel.

Size: 5.5 x 5.5 x 5.5 inches | Weight: 6 oz. | Material: Repreve recycled polyester exterior and interior | Closure: Zip

Best Hanging

Béis hanging cosmetic case.

  • Portability 4.5 /5

Fit more products than our standard packing list

Sturdy structure and shape kept all makeup secure during the shake and drop tests

Includes a removable clear zipper tote that's ideal for smaller toiletries

Bulky shape takes up a lot of room and isn't as malleable as others we tested

In vertical position, clear zipper pouch in main compartment doesn’t stay in place

It's not fun to do your hair and makeup in a tiny bathroom with no counter space for your stuff. The Béis Hanging Cosmetic case is our top pick to solve this common travel challenge. We love how easy this case is to open and pack. It unfolds and lays fully flat, which makes packing a cinch.

We were so impressed with how much we could fit in this bag. We packed four makeup brushes, six makeup palettes, one bottle of foundation, one eyelash curler, one mascara, five lipsticks, seven toiletry bottles, one hairspray, and four eyeliners.

The construction of this case feels sturdy and durable. The nylon fabric feels super easy to keep clean. During our shake and drop tests, all of the products remained intact and secure. This hanging case is on the bulkier side and would take up a lot of room in a carry-on backpack or tote. It’s probably best for larger suitcases. We appreciate the middle compartment came with a clear zipper tote you can remove and use as a TSA-friendly toiletry case for a smaller carry-on or underseat luggage . The only drawback is the clear zipper pouch can fall out when the back is stored vertically, so it’s best to store it elsewhere when hanging.

This hanging case has been ideal for longer trips our tester has taken because it holds a ton of products. She loves that it hangs on the back of a door, so it’s easy to access everything at once. The bag is very durable and easy to wipe clean, and she hasn’t noticed any damage during the past five months of use. Her favorite thing is the bag’s capacity and numerous organization pockets. Because it is bulky, she doesn’t take the entire case on short vacations, but she loves that it includes a removable makeup pouch that she can bring on weekend trips.

Size: 9.75 x 7.25 x 6.5 inches | Weight: 1.14 lbs. | Material: Nylon twill, vegan buffalo leather, polyester lining, pouch-clear TPU | Closure: Double U-zip

Best Hanging, Less Expensive

Boacay hanging travel toiletry bag.

  • Ease of Use 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4 /5
  • Capacity 3.5 /5
  • Portability 4 /5

Products visible in plastic compartment pockets

Products stayed intact during shake and drop tests

Exterior fabric is not as luxurious as others

Bulkier silhouette is better for large checked suitcases

This hanging toiletry bag from Boacay offers the convenience of vertical storage for an affordable price. The fold-out design makes packing and viewing the products very easy. This bag includes four separate zipper compartments that stay securely closed when hanging.

We packed a lot into this hanging case. We were able to fit four makeup brushes, three makeup palettes, one bottle of foundation, one eyelash curler, one mascara, two lipsticks, four toiletry bottles, and two hairspray cans. We tested the medium size, however, this product also comes in a larger size for those who need even more space.

The structure of this bag provided protection throughout our multiple shake and drop tests. Some of the products moved around a bit, but the fold-up design helped keep most things in place. We also appreciate the elastic loops in the middle two compartments that can help secure items.

Our tester has been using this hanging travel bag every day for the past five months. This convenient bag has become her regular makeup case. The hanging bag is durable and hasn’t sustained rips or tears. A small amount of powder that spilled in one of the pockets was easy to clean. She also loves the elastic straps inside two of the pockets that keep tubes and bottles separated and upright. Her one issue with the bag is that the plastic pockets bend quite a bit when full, which sometimes allows items to fall out.

Size: 11.42 x 3.78 x 7.48 inches | Weight: 12.3 oz. | Material: Exterior fabric not listed, PVC inner pockets | Closure: Full zip

Best Compact

Lululemon go getter pouch.

  • Design 4 /5

Fits easily in backpack and smaller carry-on

Pliable exterior is easier to pack and squeeze into a fuller backpack or suitcase

Water-repellent and easy to wipe clean

Needed to rummage at bottom to find items

Exterior is thin and less protective than others we tested

If you’re looking for a sleek and portable travel makeup case that you can throw in any bag, the Lululemon Go Getter Pouch is the one for you. Don’t let the compact silhouette fool you, we were able to fit quite a bit into this case. In the small front compartment, we fit four small/medium-sized brushes with room for more. We packed two palettes in the mesh pouch and five brushes, one more palette, two lipsticks, one foundation bottle, and three micellar travel bottles in the main pouch.

The outer water-repellent material made from recycled polyester looks stylish and, better yet, is also easy to clean. It feels thinner than other bags we tested — no extra padding here. After shaking and throwing the bag a few times during testing, a few caps came off some products, but thankfully, there were no spills or breaks. The tops of some lipsticks were a tad smushed. The design of this pouch is simple and straightforward without much internal organization. While the bag was able to fit many products, the lack of organized compartments made it difficult at times to find a specific product needed.

The compact size of this big is a major highlight as it easily fits in a backpack, weekender bag , carry-on luggage, and a checked bag. We especially like the flexible fabric exterior, which makes squeezing it into an already full bag much easier. The price point is affordable for a well-known brand and makes it a great choice for those prioritizing portability in a travel makeup bag.

Since she started using this pouch five months ago, our tester has taken the bag on a week-long trip. Because of its small size, she found it was a tight squeeze to fit her makeup and other items like an eyelash curler and brushes. While the bag is durable and didn’t rip during use, she found that her foundation left a stain on the fabric. Her least favorite thing about the bag is the lack of organizational features, which left her digging around or dumping everything out to find what she needed.

Size: 8.7 x 3.3 x 6.3 inches | Weight: Not listed | Material: Recycled polyester | Closure: Zip

Best Leather

Leatherology train case.

Leatherology

Square shape and deep main compartment hold a lot

Impressive internal organization

Water-resistant lining is easy to clean

Available in 12 colors and can be personalized

Not as sturdy feeling when empty

More expensive than others

Looking for luxury and durability? Leatherology’s classic, square-shaped train case will transport your makeup safely and in style. This bag’s full-grain leather exterior feels and looks like a dream. We appreciate the water-resistant lining that will be easy to keep clean. The full-zip-around closure allow for easy packing, access, and viewing of all the products. The main compartment is deep enough to pack some bottles standing up. We packed four makeup brushes, three makeup palettes, one bottle of foundation, one eyelash curler, one mascara, three lipsticks, seven small toiletry bottles, and one hairspray.

Despite initially feeling less sturdy when empty, this bag feels very secure once packed with products. The thin padding between the exterior and interior layers also adds additional protection. It fared well in all our shake and drop tests. No makeup or toiletries were broken or spilled, and the leather still looked great. The price is higher than some of the other bags we tested, but the genuine leather exterior, easy-to-clean interior, and loads of pockets make it well worth the cost.

This small train case from Leatherology has been our tester’s go-to bag for weekend and week-long trips. It fits everything she needs and then some, including larger eye shadow palettes. The case is super durable, and the interior still looks practically new. The outside has a foundation stain, but since it’s made of leather, our tester expects to get it out with a little elbow grease. She loves the size for longer trips but feels like it takes up too much room in her weekender bag to make it feasible for short trips.

Size: 7.5 x 5 x 5.2 inches | Weight: Not listed | Material: Full grain leather exterior, water-resistant synthetic interior | Closure: Zip-around

Best Makeup Case Set

Cuyana leather travel case set.

Wide opening easy to pack and access

Genuine leather is easy to clean

Sleek and elegant

Not as much padding as other bags we tested

This Travel Case Set from Cuyana is ideal for those wanting additional storage and the option of different sizes. The materials on these sleek, elegant leather cases feel durable and high quality. We learned the width of the opening can be a bit deceiving. We had to remove some products we initially packed in order to fully close the bag. In the larger bag alone we were still able to pack four makeup brushes, two makeup palettes, one bottle of foundation, one eyelash curler, one mascara, one lipstick, four toiletry bottles, and one hairspray and definitely had room for several more products. The second smaller case would be great for brushes, jewelry, or essential toiletries for your carry-on.

At first, the soft leather exterior of these cases didn't feel as sturdy as the other ones we tested, but they still kept the products secure in our tests. A little bit of eyeshadow was the only makeup to spill during multiple drops and shake tests, but it was easily cleaned up. Getting two genuine leather travel makeup cases for this price is a great deal. We also like the option to choose which size feels most appropriate for different types of travel.

As a self-proclaimed overpacker, our tester was not able to store everything she needed in this set for a longer trip. For short, local trips, she found the small pouch to be ideal for carrying all of her essentials in a backpack. She appreciated the high-quality, durable material and how the two cases fit into one another for easy storage. After five months of use, the bags showed no signs of wear, and the few smudges that appeared were easy to wipe away.

Size: 7 x 12 x 3.5 inches (large), 5 x 8 x 2.5 inches (small) | Weight: 1 lb. | Material: 100% sustainable, Argentinian leather | Closure: Zip

Best Investment

Cuyana travel beauty case.

  • Quality 4.5 /5

Removable leather pouch provides extra storage and protects fragile items

Opens fully and is easy to pack and access

Pockets and elastic loops for organization

Minor scuffs on exterior after drop tests

The Cuyana Travel Beauty Case is the epitome of fashion and function together in one beautiful bag. The Italian leather exterior elevates the classic design of this travel makeup bag. The rectangular case opens up fully (like a clamshell), and we found it was super easy to pack.

The internal organization is both super functional and beautiful, thanks to the matching leather interior. We appreciate the designated elastic loops for makeup brushes along with the leather flap to secure the brushes in place. The bonus removable leather zipper pouch adds another level of organization. An additional pocket at the bottom of the main compartment secures even more products. We were able to fit eight makeup brushes, two makeup palettes, one bottle of foundation, one eyelash curler, one mascara, four lipsticks, four toiletry bottles, and one hairspray.

The leather exterior and interior protected our makeup well during our shake and drop tests. Only a few items shook loose, but nothing broke or spilled. We noticed a few minor scuffs after dropping and throwing the bag a few times, but they were easily wiped away with our fingers. While the high price is certainly an investment, this travel case will be a beautiful piece to add to your travel collection for years to come.

During the past five months, our tester has used this Cuyana case for every trip she has taken. She was able to fit a ton inside and found the smaller pouch to be ideal for bringing a couple of things along for touch-ups. She appreciates all the organizational touches, from brush straps to a large compartment with a sleeve, and how protective the case is. The case has kept her eye palettes damage-free on trips around the world. She generally checks the large case and keeps the small pouch with her. The exterior of the bag is durable, easy to wipe clean, and looks as good as new.

Size: 6.2 x 10.2 x 3.1 inches | Weight: 1.6 lbs. | Material: Italian pebbled leather | Closure: Metal zip, internal metal button clasps

Other Travel Makeup Bags We Tried

  • Away The Cosmetics Bag : We love the sleek and low-profile design of this cosmetics bag, and the soft-molded cube shape fits nicely into a backpack and varied sizes of suitcases. While we were able to pack a substantial amount of makeup in this case, the caps came off several products during our shake and drop tests, leading us to fear some inevitable spills during travel. We also think the price tag is a bit steep compared to similar bags we tested.
  • Calpak Terra Hanging Toiletry Bag : We love the durability of this bag’s material, not to mention its cute aesthetic. The compact size is super portable, and its ability to hang vertically makes it an all-around space-saver. While this hanging toiletry bag held ample products, several makeup items fell out during our shake and drop tests, which forebodes potential broken and spilled makeup. Plus, it is more expensive than similar and more secure bags we tested.
  • Mark & Graham Concourse Cosmetics Case : We love the option to remove the smaller zipper pouch and use it on its own. While the larger case is easy to open and pack, we wish there were a few more organizational features to separate and secure items. Unfortunately, after a few shake and drop tests, several caps came off some bottles, and one compact even broke.

What to Know About Travel Makeup Bags

Functionality .

When shopping for a travel makeup bag, functionality is your friend. You want a bag that can easily store, organize, and protect your beauty products while traveling. Consider how much makeup and toiletries you usually travel with and what type of products. If you’ve got lots of brushes and smaller size items, you’ll want a bag with plenty of internal organizational options like the Relavel Travel Makeup Train Case , which has customizable dividers. Choose a bag that’ll easily fit everything, but be wary of a bag that’s too big because extra space will let your products get jostled around in transit.

Look for any special features in a travel makeup bag that are a good fit for your usual travel experience. Perhaps a hanging bag, such as the Béis The Hanging Cosmetic Case , will work best for small hotel bathrooms or tiny guest areas. Or maybe a removable pouch, like the Lululemon Go Getter Pouch , is something you’d prefer to keep essentials within reach in your carry-on. Consider other design elements like material and hardware finishes that can elevate your travel makeup bag from another utilitarian piece of luggage to a chic design piece.

Price Range

We tested travel makeup bags that range in price from around $12 to almost $300. You can find a quality makeup case at any price, including the budget-friendly Narwey Travel Makeup Bag , depending on the materials and features that are most important to you.

In our PEOPLE Tested Lab, 26 buzz-worthy makeup cases were tried, inspected, and evaluated for ease of use, quality, capacity, design, and portability. Each bag was packed with the same standard packing list, and additional products were added if possible.

  • Packing List: Our standard packing list included the following: 4 makeup brushes, 2 makeup palettes, 1 bottle of foundation, 1 eyelash curler, 1 mascara, 1 lipstick, 2 toiletry bottles (pre-filled with micellar water and sunscreen), 2 toiletry bottles (pre-filled with lotion), and 1 hairspray bottle.
  • Drop and Shake Tests: After each bag was fully packed, our testers vigorously shook and dropped each case multiple times. The condition of the makeup afterward was observed and documented.
  • Portability: To test portability, each makeup case was then packed into three different-sized bags: a backpack, a carry-on suitcase, and checked luggage.
  • Scoring: Combining considerations for the quality of materials and special organizational features, each case was given an overall score on a scale from one to five. The makeup cases with the highest average scores were selected for this article as our top picks.

Frequently Asked Questions

“For starters, I like to minimize the general bulk of my products so that I'm not overpacking,” shares Scibelli. “And, of course, keeping the sizes to 3.4 ounces and under, if I'm not checking a bag.” He also recommends using a padded cosmetics case that offers an additional layer of protection.

Pro travel tip: “Use your other items in your suitcase as armor for your makeup bag, and position it in the center or with softer items around it for protection," he says.

“A typical toiletry bag is pretty simple, consisting of a one-pocket zip pouch,” explains Scibelli. “Travel makeup cases have become so much more intricate now with multiple pockets and travel features like having detachable pockets, being water resistant, and added padding for safety.” Makeup cases will often have specific features to hold makeup brushes and easy-to-clean fabric in case of spills.

The 22 Best Travel Toiletry Bag Options in 2022

best travel bag for makeup and toiletries

By Sarah Madaus

A packed suitcase from above on the bed on a holiday or a business trip containing a water bottle an unlocked smartphone...

A few years ago, while packing for a vacation, I unknowingly set myself up to write this article. You see, I didn’t have the best travel toiletry bag, but I thought it was at least good enough to handle some turbulence-induced jostling, aggressive rifling via the hands of the TSA, and my generally careless luggage shlepping methods. I was wrong. As soon as we arrived at our hotel, I unzipped my travel bag in search of my brand new dress. I found it…covered in…**sniffs**… body wash ? Or was that shampoo ? Or my…you’ve got to be kidding me…$150 vitamin C serum ? I’m still not sure, because my toiletry bag zipper broke at some point during my travels, leaving all of my prized 1.5-oz tinctures, creams, essences, and potions to spill.

This toiletry bag and I were acquainted since my middle school days. If I had listened to my better judgment and invested in a high-quality option, I wouldn’t have run into this vicious conundrum. On the bright side, I made the mistake so that you don’t have to.

What should you look for when buying a toiletry bag or Dopp kit?

First of all, let’s clear something up: Dopp kits and toiletry bags are the same things. You might see “Dopp kit” used for “men’s” bags and “toiletry bags” used for “women’s” bags. We don’t need to gender bags. You can buy whichever toiletry bag-slash-Dopp kit your heart desires.

When shopping for the best travel toiletry bag for you, you’ll want to look at construction. A few questions to ponder: Is the design intuitive and functional for your needs? Are the zippers sturdy? Is the fabric easy to clean? We’ve done the work of finding excellent options, now all you need to do is figure out what kind will suit your travel hygiene needs.

Below, see 23 of the best toiletry bags and Dopp kits that will keep your stuff organized and leak-free through all kinds of travel, from brands like Calpak, Bagsmart, Herschel, REI, Paravel, and more. We included hanging toiletry bags that save space in your carry-on, as well as bags that sit on the bathroom counter. You’ll find minimalist toiletry cases with no separate interior pockets, which is ideal if you’re traveling with a few easy-to-recognize items. We also added larger bags that have different zippered compartments and mesh pockets so that you can separate shower products from skin-care items and makeup. And we threw in a few luxe hard shell cases that will look so good on your counter that you’ll want to use them when you’re not traveling.

How do I pick the best makeup bag for travel?

hearst owned

Finding a makeup bag that fulfills your long list of needs can be done. When on the hunt, prioritize space. If it can’t fit all of our products then what’s the point? It’s best to look for a bag that caters to your specific makeup and preferences. Bigger full-sized items can be easily thrown in a spacious bag, whereas smaller items such as lipsticks, liners, individual shadows, etc. beg for a bag with pockets and dividers as opposed to a catch-all. At the end of the day, a makeup bag should keep you organized, happy, and sane!

What’s the best makeup bag material?

hearst owned

Anything water resistant! Most makeup bags are lined with water-resistant or waterproof materials such as clear plastic, nylon, or polyester.

How should I clean my makeup bag?

hearst owned

Beauty lovers know the danger of a loose cap. Though spills may be unavoidable, cleaning them up is something we all must learn to master. Turns out the secret is not so secret: antibacterial household spray! Any Clorox, Microband, or Cleansmart spray, etc. will do the trick. Tip: Make sure to bring makeup pads on every expedition, in case a spill decides to attempt destruction. Shop our favorite antibacterial reusable cotton rounds here .

How should I organize my makeup bag for travel?

hearst owned

When organizing your makeup for a trip, there are a few important things to keep in mind:

  • Try to leave full-sized products at home. If it's a short enough trip, go for the minis.
  • If you can, pick the combined products (for example: A bronzer + blush compact rather than bringing both bronzer and blush).
  • Check the amount of product you have left before packing. Arriving at your destination with only a drop left isn’t doing anyone any good!
  • If you don’t have mini versions of your fav moisturizers, primers, setting spray, shampoo, or conditioner, don’t fret. You can find travel-sized bottles here , which can save you from a last minute trip to the drug store! Plus, they’re TSA approved.
  • When packing, it’s helpful to do your full routine start-to-finish and place each beauty item in your makeup bag, and nothing else. This way, you can avoid the unnecessary-yet-tempting products!

If you buy something from the links on this page, we may earn a commission. Why Trust Us?

The best travel makeup bags of course come in many shapes and sizes, but our team of editors and experts came together to find the most incredible options for every type of makeup lover out there. Whether you only have a couple of staple products or have had to seriously consider bringing an additional carry-on to fit all of your beauty favorites during your travels, we've included options for you. Below, read on to find the best travel makeup bag for you.

The Best Travel Makeup Bags

  • Best Overall: The Small Toiletry Bag
  • Best Budget: Queboom Travel Makeup Bag
  • Best Organizer: Hunter Neoprene Toiletry Bag
  • Best Multi-Compartment: The Dopp Kit
  • Best Bulk: Skkn by Kim Vanity Bag

What to Consider

When selecting the best travel makeup bag for yourself or for a giftee, you have a few things to consider before pressing "add to cart." First, you should check out how much space you really have in your travel backpack or carry-on to fit additional storage essentials. Then, you have to think about what you're putting in the bag. Will it only be small makeup items, or will you also want to throw in skincare essentials, small toiletries, and hair accessories? Once you have figured that out, consider the type of material your makeup bag should be. How important is it for you to be able to wash this? If it's a must, you'll obviously want something waterproof.

How much space do you have in your luggage to add a travel makeup bag? Will you mostly be throwing it into a weekender or a large suitcase that has miles of space inside? Consider what you're working with on the road (and in your perhaps very full closet), then peep at the travel makeup bag's dimensions to ensure it'll fit easily into your packing routine.

Laura Geller , a New York City-based makeup artist and entrepreneur who has her own namesake makeup brand filled with editor-loved products, says size is perhaps the most important factor shoppers should consider.

"I tend to travel with a lot of makeup so I can switch up my looks when I’m on my trips. I find a lot of the ones on the market are very small and only hold a few things, so I’m always on the hunt for one that can hold a lot," she explains. "Additionally, I like one that can lay flat ( hanging organizers work here, too) so that I can easily find everything, and I’m not rummaging for a product at the bottom of a bag."

Compartments

Are you a Type A traveler who needs everything divided into certain spaces? For example, will you want your blushes to stay in one pocket, your concealers to stay in another, and your brushes securely placed in built-in brush holders? Or, could you care less and just want something that'll fit everything?

"I love one where you don’t have to be worried about organizing all of your makeup, that holds a lot of product and is easy to find your items once it’s been opened," said Geller.

Either way is right, so long as it's what you or your giftee want. When looking for a travel makeup bag, make sure that it has enough compartments, pockets, and dividers to fulfill your needs.

Washable Material

If you or your giftee have experienced an exploded concealer or liquid blush from time to time, then you know how important a washable (specifically, a machine-washable) travel makeup bag is. Many of the best travel makeup bags on the market are made with at least wipeable material that makes for an easy clean-up.

How We Selected

Our product experts tested these travel makeup bags at home, on the road, and, of course, in the air and at hotels. We judged makeup bags for their organizational features, space, material, and giftability. Some of these selections have been used for years and years, while other newer ones have been put through the wringer for at least a few weeks. When we weren't traveling, we simulated the experience by bringing these travel makeup bags with us to the gym and to the office to determine how well they fit into commutes and luggage.

If we weren't able to test a bag, we conducted thorough research, vetted the brand, or took our expert's recommendations on what features a good travel makeup bag needs to be useful.

Why Trust Us

I have more than half a decade's worth of experience professionally testing and reviewing travel essentials and makeup. Additionally, I reached out to our beauty editor for her expert picks, as well as professional makeup artists who travel a lot to include their choices.

Away The Small Toiletry Bag

The Small Toiletry Bag

I wasn't at all shocked at the high quality of Away's Small Toiletry Bag — the beloved travel brand is known for its innovative creations that combine organization and aesthetics to create truly remarkable accessories, bags, and luggage .

What makes this travel makeup bag the best of the best is its sleek and useful features. The zip-up bag has two sections each with zip-up mesh enclosures that allow you to see your contents without having them spill on top of each other. One section is a deep pocket that is capable of fitting bigger items like hairbrushes, serums, or cleansers. The other side includes five brush holders as well as more open space for any additional items.

While the name says it's small, I found I was able to fit a lot of products inside, including several blushes, five brushes, cleansers, foundations, serums, and more.

The shape of the bag as well as the nylon material it's made with make for a sturdy traveler that can be smooshed a bit to fit into tight bags, but will keep its shape enough so that your items won't be crushed throughout your journey.

But, if any travel mishaps do occur and foundation spills or powder gets everywhere, you can easily wipe off smudges and stains since the interior is coated for easy wipe-downs.

This makeup bag comes in four chic and aesthetically-pleasing colorways. The white option would make a great gift for brides before they embark on honeymoons and the black would be a great gift for your boyfriend and his toiletries (he could use the brush holders for combs and other essentials).

When it comes to travel makeup bags, you'll be hard-pressed to find one more dependable than this.

Queboom Queboom Travel Makeup Bag

Queboom Travel Makeup Bag

If you're on a tight budget or are perhaps buying a bunch of travel makeup bags to gift your bachelorette party, or group of girlfriends before a trip, or are grabbing several as gifts for teens for your nieces or kids, you won't break the budget with this style.

Under $10, this Amazon favorite is similar to the Away bag in that it has a clamshell opening, a sturdy handle, and makeup brush holders (six to be exact). Though each side of this bag isn't sectioned off with zip-up closures, you will get a detachable zipped-up pouch with this buy. The addition comes in handy for hair ties, bobby pins, or jewelry that can easily be lost during travel.

Additionally, this bag is waterproof on the inside and outside, so you or your giftee can clean it up easily post-travel by simply tossing it in the washing machine.

There are a whopping 25 color options and patterns to choose from, but we're partial to this muted sage green or this bold yellow that would come in handy if you often lose things (nothing's easier to spot in a messy closet than a makeup bag that essentially glows in the dark).

Dagne Dover Hunter Neoprene Toiletry Bag

Hunter Neoprene Toiletry Bag

This travel makeup bag comes with so many goodies inside, you'll feel like it's Christmas opening it up. In addition to the three makeup brush holders, and a built-in mesh pocket, the bag comes with two removable zip-up pouches (the small size only has one). One's long and narrow and is great for holding combs, additional brushes, and mascara, while the other bigger option is stellar for organizing flat products like highlighters and powders.

The washable bag comes in small and large sizes and has three different finishes: neoprene, air mesh, or seasonal. It also comes with a unique locking securing system. Once you zip it up, you can then take each side fold and button it down so it's more compact.

Also, when you buy this bag you'll get a free duster to keep it in while you store it. However, I like this bag so much that I use it as my daily makeup bag. It's big enough to fit the essentials — I have two sunscreens, concealer, foundation, two blushes, a mascara, and a few eyebrow products in now — but doesn't take up a lot of coveted bathroom or closet space.

The quality of this travel makeup bag is impressive. Though it's flexible, the thick fabric keeps glass products protected from breaking during transit while still fitting into tight quarters inside bags or luggage.

Lay-n-Go Lay-n-Go Cosmo Drawstring Organizer

Lay-n-Go Cosmo Drawstring Organizer

Geller recommends a travel makeup bag that's a bit unique to the average consumer. "I love this one from Amazon," she said of the Lay-n-Go. "I love it so much I actually got it for my entire marketing team as a holiday gift one year."

The clever style cinches up into a pouch bag but once loosened, lies flat like a pancake so you can see all of your products easily. Thanks to the dozen+ makeup loops throughout the bag, your concealers, brow gels, and mascaras will remain in place no matter what position the bag's in.

In addition to these holders, the travel makeup bag also has a zip-up pocket to hold smaller items like rings, watches, or hair ties.

This is a great gift idea for makeup lovers who perhaps get a little messy in hotel bathrooms with all of their belongings. They'll be able to see all of their makeup while getting ready for the day without having to take everything out and leave it in the sink... not that this has ever happened.

It comes in 30 pattern options ranging from neutral blacks and blues to eye-catching leopard and camo. Choose whatever fits your giftee's style for a more customized element.

Beis The Dopp Kit

The Dopp Kit

If you're looking for a travel makeup bag that will fit a lot of products, look no further. This dual-compartment design from Beis is a big boy with big storage capabilities.

"Even though Beis lists dimensions on their website, I was still surprised by how big the Dopp kit was," said Best Products tester and writer Lauren Gruber . "I was able to fit my daily makeup and brushes in the top compartment and my skincare and perfume in the bottom compartment, which claims to be spill-proof."

She says the separate sections made it easier to organize all of her cosmetics and additional toiletries — there are two interior slip pockets to keep your toothbrush and medications separate.

This travel makeup bag also features a loop at the top that you can use in your bathroom or hotel room on towel hooks. "The design is very attractive and I love how it comes in so many colors coordinate with the rest of your Beis luggage," Gruber continued. "I could also see myself using it to keep my portable chargers, cables, and pens organized for a longer trip. I was packing into the Beis Front Pocket Carry-On Roller and I did find that it was difficult to get the Dopp kit to lay flat inside of my luggage when packed to the brim. For that reason, I would suggest pairing it with a larger piece of luggage like the Check-In Roller. "

Skkn By Kim Vanity Bag

Vanity Bag

To be honest, at first glance, I was thoroughly unimpressed by this $70 travel makeup bag. The floppy construction and minimal pocket and compartment options seemed like proof that it was overpriced and overhyped.

However, after giving this bag a chance, I realized just how useful the XL holder can be — thanks to the elastic loop system inside. The nine loops are meant for the brand's entire skincare system but do a stellar job at holding everything from contact solutions, serums, cleansers, foundations, shampoos, and more essentials. I didn't realize how big of a game-changer this was until I loaded it up on my own for a five-day trip.

Usually, I throw toiletries into my suitcase and hope for the best, but this bag allows for everything I need to stay in one spot. From small concealer brushes to large bottles of lotion, I fit it all.

Will this bag take up a good chunk of space in carry-on bags? Yes. But you'd be using that space regardless, so you might as well do so in an organized fashion.

It only comes in one colorway because Kim Kardashian famously loves muted and matching aesthetics, so don't expect any patterns. It'd make a great luxury gift for somebody who loves to Keep Up and has a mini Sephora store in their home.

KUSSHI Washable Travel Makeup and Cosmetic Everyday Bag

Washable Travel Makeup and Cosmetic Everyday Bag

The Best Products beauty editor Nicole Saunders has endless knowledge on all things makeup. Seriously. Ask her anything and she'll know the answer and give you 17 recommendations in 16 seconds. So, of course, we had to tap her for some of her most coveted travel makeup bag recommendations.

"I love my Kusshi makeup bags and highly recommend them as a beauty gift to yourself or a loved one," she said. "They're available in two types of materials — fabric and leather — but I prefer fabric because it's cheaper and easy to clean if makeup accidentally gets on the exterior or interior lining. Speaking of, the vast variety of colorways to select ensures it matches everyone's personal style. I'm personally obsessed with the Candy Apple Red fabric with leopard interior because it's easy to spot in my workbag or suitcase."

There are three sizes to chose from, including the Everyday which holds up to 10 products, Signature which fits up to 20 products, and Vacationer which carries up to 30 products.

She says she can fit a good amount of product in the Signature size option, including foundation, powders, blushes, brushes, and lipsticks. We also got our hands on the Vacationer, and wow. That thing will fit your entire makeup collection easily. It just might also take up half of the space in your weekender/ carry-on...

Stoney Clover Travel Large Pouch

Travel Large Pouch

If you're looking for a beauty gift for somebody who loves glitz, glamor, and personal touches, look no further than a Stoney Clover pouch. These have long been loved by the internet for their chic design that photographs super well. You can choose to customize pouches (monograms are an extra $24 and patches are an additional $15) or get pre-made designs like this travel one, which will likely ship faster.

While they're great for holding pretty much everything, from brushes to snacks, expect a bit of chaos inside since there aren't any pockets, pouches, or brush holders to utilize. However, if you're just looking for something cute that'll hold whatever you need, this is a great option.

I've had this travel makeup bag for years and it's so handy at keeping literally everything I own in one spot. I use it as bulk storage for when I'm traveling for a long amount of time and have found it to be great at fitting larger items, like contact lens solutions, serums, and fragrances.

My only major qualm about this bag is that there aren't any pockets, slots, or makeup brush holders that would organize my items. So, when I use it, I expect a bit of chaos and a bit of my time rummaging through it. It's hard to find another makeup bag out there as cute and as giftable, though.

In addition to being a stellar travel makeup bag, this pouch could also be a useful pencil pouch, accessories holder, or desk organizer.

BAGSMART Toiletry Bag

Toiletry Bag

Hanging toiletry bags are great options that double as travel makeup bags. This best-selling one from Amazon has four different compartments, a bunch of inner pockets, and elastic straps that hold everything from shampoo bottles to eyeshadow palettes. To top it all off (literally) a hanger head is attached so you or your giftee can easily hang the bag on racks at home or in hotels.

The different compartments have useful design features like elastic straps and double zippers to hold large bottles upright and in place. The transparent sides are also great because you can peak inside and note what you have without having to unzip the entire bag and search through it.

Choose from 2 size options and 8 colorways to match your luggage or aesthetic.

Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Makeup Bag

Pillow Talk Makeup Bag

Another recommendation from Saunders, this travel makeup bag from celebrity makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury is compact but chock-full of useful design elements.

"It's the perfect gift for someone like me who has a sizeable beauty collection and wants to keep everything as organized as possible," Saunders explained. "I have a compartment for eyeliners, brow pencils, and mascaras, another for eyeshadow quads and singles, and one solely for my lipsticks. It's a small detail, but I appreciate that the zipper never gets stuck, which has happened more often than not with other makeup bags I've tested. Not only is this bag functional, but it's stunning! The classic pillow talk pink faux leather exterior with the cheeky lip and lipstick print is gorgeous and lives proudly as a display piece on my shelf."

The accordion-style bag has five compartments, a zipper pouch, and a zipper closure. And, perhaps most importantly, it features a bold lip design that's the same color as the brand's iconic Pillow Talk lipstick .

You’ve lined them up across your vanity so beautifully that even a Sephora associate would envy the display. Depending on your needs, beauty collection, and travel destination, the right makeup bag for you will differ from the next person. Destination bridal makeup artist, Tia Codrington , recommends having a clear makeup case. Not only “has it helped me with organization, but it’s useful during security checks in the airport because security officers have a clear view of what’s inside the bag without having to go through all your stuff,” she says.

For those who lack organizational acumen, we did our best Marie Kondo to see which of the buzziest bags out there were actually useful by filling them with bottles of lotions, creams, sprays, brushes, and powders. Then, we pretended each was a dodgeball and threw them around our NYC-based lab. The makeup bags that emerged victorious, with the fewest spills, breaks, or explosions, were then judged for material quality and compressive ability. And of course, we tested to see the amount of space it took up in a carry-on bag, design, usefulness of the compartments, and overall capacity. This list comprises our highest-ranking makeup bags we’d be happy to take with us for a long weekend or months-long adventure (we wish!).

Best Overall

Béis the cosmetic case.

What We Love: It comes with a mirror. What We Don’t Love: You can’t compartmentalize as much.

Out of all the makeup cases we tested, we found the Béis Cosmetic Case to be the most universally useful. It comes with a removable mirror that’s quite generous in size and stands upright to give us a view of our entire face so we could do our makeup on the go.

In terms of space, there’s a center section for brushes, which is removable, and we were able to get five brushes in comfortably without flattening the bristles. Then in the main compartment, we were able to fit all of our go-to makeup products with ease. There’s even a shallow zippered section attached to the top lid where we slid in our powder compacts and palettes. Even the hardware holding everything together felt luxe and sturdy, not to mention easy to wipe clean. We also loved how the case opened up completely, putting everything on full display and easy to access. That being said, there weren’t many compartments or straps to organize our products. When we tossed the bag around, the items remained protected and safe without spilling or coming loose.

Materials: Faux leather exterior, nylon lining interior | Compartments: None | Colors: 10 | Size: 9.5 x 4 x 7” inches

Best Budget

Narwey travel makeup bag.

What We Love: The quality feels much more high-end than what the price suggests. What We Don’t Love: We wish it was slightly more cushioned.

We love a good budget option when the product feels much more high-end than what it’s priced at—that’s how we felt about this Narwey makeup case. The lightweight option doesn’t lack in space, compartments, or even aesthetic appeal, making it a phenomenal option for everyday use.

Much like the previous Beis option, this bag opens up fully, giving us complete access to all our goods. On the lid-side of the bag, we could squeeze 20 brushes in the eight brush pockets (ranging in size)—there’s even a flap to cover and protect the brush heads. The bag comes with a fully removable pouch, where we kept our face palettes , a color correcting palette, three eyeliners , four lipsticks , a mascara , and a lash curler . Then in the main compartment, we stored our foundations , moisturizers , makeup removers , favorite dry shampoo , and more. Needless to say, nothing needs to be left behind with this bag, and yet it didn’t feel completely bulky—we were able to store this in our backpack and carry-on cases sans-problem.

Materials: Water-resistant fabric | Compartments: 3 | Colors: 15 | Size: 9 x 6.7 x 3.5 inches

Best Splurge

Cuyana travel beauty case.

What We Love: You can add a personalized monogram. What We Don’t Love: It’s only available in two colors.

Now onto something for the makeup gurus who don’t play about their beauty collection. The price of this travel case is on the higher side, but after thoroughly testing it we think it’s worth every penny.

Let’s start with the luxurious material, stitch, and zips. This bag is about as sturdy as it gets without having a full-on hard-shell makeup case. The leather is strong and sturdy, while  the zippers glide smoothly all the way around and open in a clam-shell style. The lid portion features four loops for brushes and an elastic pocket to collect the ends. The leather divider in the middle helps to protect the brush heads from the items on the other side, where we placed our foundations, bronzers, blushes, and more. There was even a clippable pouch that we could remove and use on its own on a flight. Because of its sleek and long shape, we placed our waterproof mascaras , eyeliners, and brow products in there. We could even sneak in an eyeshadow brush as well. Knowing that it will last us well over a decade further makes this worth the investment. Slab on the fact that we could add a personalized monogram and it’s truly chef’s kiss.

Materials: Leather | Compartments: 4 | Colors: 2 | Size: 6.2 x 10.2 x 3.1 inches

Best Hanging

Béis hanging cosmetic case.

What We Love: There’s a removable pouch, making it easy to take essential items along during day excursions.  What We Don’t Love: It’s very bulky and large, making it harder to pack.

This is for the beauty guru who needs to bring their entire beauty routine with them on the go, even if it means sacrificing a sweater or two in their luggage space. The Beis Hanging Cosmetic Case was truly made for the expert—even professional makeup artists will find great usage out of all the space, compartments, and hanging ability.

We first noticed how the outside has a stiffer material, making it absorb any drops and protecting the contents inside. Meanwhile, the interior is quite slick, so we would have no quarrels giving it a good clean should any powder or creams ever get spilled. The bag flaps open into three sections and has a little hook to hang for when we don’t have any counter space to lay it out flat. Thanks to all the zippers and netted pouches, nothing would fall out while being perfectly visible in its vertical position. We fit absolutely everything we could think of here—moisturizers, creams, foundations, makeup palettes, four eyeliners, five lipsticks and glosses, and still had room to spare. The pouch in the middle is also removable, which we found to be very useful when we wanted to head out for the day and bring a few essentials along.

Materials: Nylon, vegan leather | Compartments: 5 | Colors: 2 | Size: 9.75 x 7.25 x 6.5 inches

Best for Bottles

Dagne dover mila toiletry organizer.

Dagne Dover

What We Love: It comes with removable dividers to keep bottles cushioned and separated. What We Don’t Love: We wish the handle could be opened and closed so that we may loop it on a towel rack and save counter space.

Do you have any delicate perfume bottles , creams, or foundations you want to keep properly cushioned and separated? Then it truly does not get better than (or cuter than) this toiletry organizer from Dagne Dover. The circular and upright bag has a cushioned mesh fabric all throughout the interior, with six adjustable compartments to place individual items in securely.

More than just the six main compartments, we were able to place pencils and brushes (which fit perfectly upright) in the side slits as well. Then on the opening flap, we placed sunscreens , hair ties, lipsticks, and other miscellaneous items in the zippered mesh bag. Of course, removing the dividers altogether created even more space, but we liked how our glass bottles were protected inside the dividers—not even throwing the bag across the room could affect the interior. Because of the flexible cushiony material, it was easy to squish the bag down and save space in our luggage as well.

Materials: Recycled polyester | Compartments: 11 | Colors: 4 | Size: 5.5 x 5.5 x 5.5 inches

Best Organizer

Away the cosmetics bag.

What We Love: There is a discreet hidden black pocket for anything you want to keep private.  What We Don’t Love: The makeup brush compartment clips off, but we’re not sure why as it does not conceal an extra compartment or save space this way.

A good makeup case for travel should be able to endure the rough handling of TSA, flight turbulence, and rolling over cobblestone streets. For this reason, the hard yet cushioned shell of the Away Cosmetics Bag is ideal. The neoprene exterior felt luscious and high-end, which is very on par with all of Away's products. Inside, there is a clear zippered main compartment, and underneath it hides a little black pouch, fit for eyeshadow palettes and medications. The clear compartment is spacious enough to hold just about anything, from creams to lash curlers to hydrating lipsticks . And because it’s made of plastic, it’s easy to wipe off any potential spills.

On the lid side of the bag is a detachable brush holder with five pockets. We will say, however, that we’re uncertain why they made the brush holder detachable, as it doesn’t conceal anything underneath or even save a bunch of space. The holder alone is of no use without the case either.

Materials: Nylon, neoprene | Compartments: 3 | Colors: 2 | Size: 8.3 x 6.3 x 3.9 inches

Best With Compartments

Relavel travel makeup case.

What We Love: The internal dividers can be adjusted to your liking. What We Don’t Love: It's too big to fit into a backpack, and will take a lot of space in a suitcase. If you’re a professional makeup artist and have to travel to see your clients, then this is the makeup case to opt for. More than just large, this case has been expertly designed with makeup artists in mind, giving us adjustable compartments made of mesh, smooth, and easy-to-clean material.

We consider ourselves on the higher end of neat and tidy, (Marie Kondo is our saving grace), and we can’t begin to describe how satisfying it is to have our un-shamefully large collection of foundations, eyeshadow palettes, lip kits and more, properly stashed in their own compartments. The brush compartment on the internal divider had scrunch pockets, and the flap that goes over the brushes sufficiently covered all of them for protection. Thankfully, the bag itself is very lightweight, as the weight of all our products is already heavy enough. The bag came with an adjustable strap, which we could wear as a crossbody or even turn into a backpack. That being said, it’s a little too large to comfortably fit into a backpack.

Materials: Nylon | Compartments: 9 | Colors: 20 | Size: 10.3 x 9 x 3.6 inches

Best for Brushes

Relavel small makeup case.

What We Love: We could fit at least 15 brushes in the bag. What We Don’t Love: There is no pouch over the brushes to protect them.

She may have small in the title, but this bag actually fits a ton of product—at least enough for your everyday makeup needs. The most notable feature of this bag however is how many slots there are for brushes. From big to small, there are two walls dedicated to just brushes, easily carrying at least 15 makeup brushes in various sizes.

The interior divider features a row of brush holders on one side, and mesh pockets on the other. Once we flipped that over, we were met with a large (but not very deep) space for all of our creams and cases. It could fit plenty of mascaras and lip glosses for everyday wear, but if you wanted to go full glam you may feel it’s not spacious enough. For the average consumer, however, we believe the soft bag is perfectly sufficient for a casual week away.

Materials: Nylon | Compartments: 5 | Colors: 21 | Size: 8.9 x 5.1 x 5.1 inches

Best Water-Repellent

Lululemon go getter pouch.

What We Love: It fits a lot more than it looks.  What We Don’t Love: There aren’t any compartments to organize specific items into.

Not only is this makeup pouch small, but soft-shelled as well, making it easy to compress for travel. It’s made of the same materials as Lululemon’s infamous belt bag , which is water-repellent and durable.

The pouch consists of one main compartment, with a mesh interior pocket and an exterior zipped pocket. It didn’t seem like much at first, but once we started placing our foundations, creams, powders, and beyond in it, we realized just how much it could hold, which is a lot (two liters of stuff, to be exact). Thanks to the nylon material, it's easy to clean should anything ever spill—and spill it might, as there isn’t really a hardcover protecting any of the contents.  There aren’t a plethora of compartments, and we did get a little lost trying to find specific items in what feels like a Mary Poppins bag, but we’re happy with how discreetly it can fit a bunch of items in a small size.

Materials: Recycled polyester, nylon | Compartments: 3 | Colors: 3 | Size: 8.7 x 3.3 x 6.3 inches

MZ Wallace Mica Cosmetic Case

What We Love: The cushiony exterior kept everything safe and protected. What We Don’t Love: We wish there were one or two more compartments.

We selected this option as our best pouch pick not because of how much this bag can hold (although that is a big point), but because of its cushiony exterior. Instead of a hard shell, this quilted bag felt like a protective pillow around our valuables, while being flexible enough to press down in our suitcases.

The top zips open almost fully, making it easy to access all of our makeup. There are only two compartments—the main interior and a not so little side zip. We were flabbergasted at just how much could fit into this little black hole: three micellar waters , two travel-size shampoo bottles, a large liquid concealer, a bronzer , five lipsticks, and about seven brushes nestled next to each other, and the bag still didn’t feel like it was filled up. The bag was almost like a flexible fleece jacket to our goodies, easily accommodating our large collection of beauty products without taking too much luggage space.

Materials: Leather, REC oxford | Compartments: 2 | Colors: 1 | Size: 9.49 x 4.02 x 5.98 inches

Best Train Set

Leatherology train case.

Leatherology

What We Love: There are organizational compartments on the interior side that don’t take up any space. What We Don’t Love: It’s very tall, so it may sit awkwardly in a suitcase.

A classic train case is a stylish way to hold all your beauty products on the go. We tested several, but found this full grain leather option the most practical. While at a first glance it looks like any other spacious rectangular box, a closer look revealed that each of the walls had a different organizational perk. Two sides had a pocket sleeve with an elastic strap, one side had a slip pocket, and the last had a zippered pocket. There was even a mesh zippered pocket on the lid, where we kept eyeshadow palettes and mascaras. We loved how these compartments didn’t take up any additional space (like a divider would), while still giving us the opportunity to organize a little.

The box is quite deep, so even our travel-size shampoos could stand upright. Unless we packed everything snugly side by side, these items would fall to their sides and look a little messy after travel. Should anything spill, however, the water-resistant lining made it very easy to clean.

Materials: Leather, nylon | Compartments: 3 | Colors: 14 | Size: 7.5 x 5 x 5.2 inches

Boacay Hanging Travel Toiletry Bag

What We Love: The pockets are all clear, giving us good visibility into the interior. What We Don’t Love: The cover is not that protective or sturdy.

It’s not enough for a bag to have great organizational capabilities, it needs to provide great visibility into our collection of products as well, and this bag does just that. It comes with a little rotating hook, which we used to hang the bag onto a towel rack.

Once fully folded open, it reveals four bagged compartments, all made of clear plastic. The two center pockets are larger than the outer ones, so we stored our hair spray, body lotions , and all other cream products in there. In the smaller pouches we hid our brushes, eye creams , and any other miscellaneous items in. Although it looked stuffed to the brim, once closed it did not bulk up any more than it did while empty. It still folded easily and zippered closed without putting up a fight. Celebrity makeup artist Katie Nova stresses how convenient it is to keep all her skin care and beauty products separate, but in the same container, “eliminating the need for a separate bag and simplifying my travel routine further.” With a water-repellent finish and light padding, it’s perfectly usable for everyday use.

Materials: Brushed, water-repellant | Compartments: 5 | Colors: 8 | Size: 11.4 x 3.8 x 7.5 inches

Best Makeup Pouch for Purse

Cuyana leather travel case set.

What We Love: It comes with two bags in one set. What We Don’t Love: The leather exterior and interior are difficult to clean.

If you want to have your beauty items close to you while on the go, then a pouch small enough to fit in your purse is the way to go. This Cuyana set, which yes, comes with two different sized pouches, was quick to steal our hearts with its beautiful pebbled leather design. The bag opened up so wide, it was easy to pack all our essentials in and get quick access to them. The larger pouch has one slit pocket on the side, although we have to admit, it’s more for the aesthetics than any functional purpose.

The second pouch is merely a smaller version of the large one, without the slit interior pocket. At first, we wondered why we would need two of the same bag, but then came to realize how useful it is to keep one in our check-in luggage and the other in our backpacks and close to us on the plane. Together, we could easily bring our entire makeup routine with us wherever we go. Because it’s made of full leather on the exterior and interior, it was difficult to clean the bag. One of our eyeshadow palettes popped open and stained the bag slightly. Luckily, Cuyana gives detailed instructions on how to care for the pouch.

Materials: Leather  | Compartments: 2 | Colors: 16 | Size: Large pouch: 7 x 12 x 3.5 inches, small pouch: 5 x 8 x 2.5 inches

  • Size: Before committing to a makeup case, take a look at your beauty products and consider how much you actually use on a daily basis. Next, consider the location you’re hoping to transport them to, and ask yourself what you need there. The answer to these questions will determine how large your makeup case should be. We tested a range of makeup bags, and found some big enough to suit a professional makeup artist, in need of carrying a bunch of products in various shades, and simple pouches fit to hold a good chunk of essentials for a weekend getaway. You also want to consider how you will be transporting your makeup case. Some bags are too large to fit in a backpack and take a ton of space in a carry-on, but will be great in a larger suitcase.
  • Material: Makeup isn’t cheap, so you probably want the case to properly cushion and protect your collection. That being said, harder shells or even cushioned bags take up a lot of space in your luggage, so finding something that compromises between protective yet lightweight can be difficult. Factor in the ability to wash the bag, and it can become downright mathematical. Codrington finds bags that have both a semi-hard lid or bottom with cushioned sides the most useful, saying the bag she always uses “has some soft, breathable areas and a hard shell in the back to protect the components inside.” Other options feature quality leather all throughout the pouch, which certainly helps to protect the interior but is also more difficult to clean. If you are worried about spillage, something with a clear plastic case would be much more efficient. Professional makeup artist J. Guerra remarks that “bags made of nylon or other materials that are easy to wipe down in case of makeup spills while traveling are essential.”
  • Compartments: Maybe you don’t care too much for compartments and just need a spacious pouch to throw all your things in, in which case, skip this section. For everyone else who gets a kick out of neatly separating your liquids from your powders, consider all the organizational capabilities of your future makeup case. Guerra says that a “space for brushes, separate compartments for liquids (to comply with airport regulations), and dividers to stay organized prevent delicate powders or eyeshadow palettes from breaking apart.” So not only do compartments make packing neater, but safer for your goods as well. “Some bags even have removable pouches or adjustable dividers for added safeguarding and flexibility, those are my favorite,” says Guerra.

What is the best way to pack makeup for travel?

On top of the above mentioned size, material, and compartments, you have to make sure you’re following TSA guidelines—like not including liquids that are more than 3.4 ounces and storing everything inside a clear container, if it’s coming with you in your carry-on luggage. Guerra, who frequently travels to meet his beauty clients, offers a few tips for traveling with makeup: “When flying, I’ll often wrap my powder palettes and compacts in bubble wrap or a small towel to prevent them from breaking en route.” If you’re absolutely worried about anything spilling, Guerra suggests “storing creams and liquids into Ziploc bags before placing them in your makeup case.”

What is the best professional makeup case?

Professional makeup artists are going to need a lot more space to accommodate their wide range of products and shades. They also require easy access to their products, so bags must open wide or offer a clear case. “I typically go for bags that have a wide opening and transparent compartments. This allows me to easily see and quickly access items for red carpet touch-ups or makeup adjustments on-set,” says Guerra.

Bianca Kratky is a commerce writer at InStyle with three years of experience covering fashion and beauty stories. She’s a frequent traveler, having even traveled the world on her own for a year, and knows a thing or two about smart packing tricks. In order to write this story, she dove deep into the insights of the testers who each individually handled the makeup cases. She then consulted celebrity makeup artists J. Guerra and Katie Nova, as well as destination bridal makeup artist Tia Codrington, for further insight into what to look for when shopping for makeup cases.

What to look for in a toiletry bag, best overall: july vanity cosmetic case.

Image may contain: Accessories, Bag, and Handbag

Vanity Cosmetic Case

  • Why we love it: Toiletries can easily be jostled en route to a destination, whether that’s on an international flight or a walk from the linen closet to the bathroom. July’s Vanity Cosmetic Case rises to the challenge of keeping everything—from bottles to brushes—in place. With enough height to stow bottles upright, it also has side elastics that keep small products secure. Internal and external pockets make it easy to organize products into tidy collections, and a removable pouch can be carried onto the plane. Finally, a sturdy leather top handle makes for easy portability.
  • Dimensions: 9.84 x 6.30 x 7.87 inches

Best Two-Pack: Cuyana Travel Case Set

Image may contain: Cushion, Home Decor, Electronics, Speaker, Accessories, Sunglasses, Bag, and Handbag

Travel Case Set

  • Why we love it: Two are better than one when it comes to storage options. This duo from Cuyana pairs a small, pebbled leather bag with a larger counterpart. This makes it easy to separate products by size; or, should you wish, to use the smaller bag in your carry-on suitcase while stowing the larger one in checked baggage. The leather lining is easy to clean—any wet washcloth will whisk away any trace of a makeup mishap—and the exterior Argentinian leather is available in 16 tempting shades. Colors range from a demure blush (a bestseller) to a chili-pepper red.
  • Dimensions: Large bag 7 x 12 x 3.5 inches; small bag 5 x 8 x 2.5 inches

Best for Your Purse: Everlane The ReNew Transit Catch-All Case

Image may contain: Cushion, Home Decor, Accessories, Bag, Handbag, and Furniture

The ReNew Transit Catch-All Case

  • Why we love it: Made from 100% recycled polyester, Everlane’s case has a collapsible structure. This makes it adaptable to different types of getaways: If it’s a beach weekend where only SPF is required, collapse the case to make room for more bikinis. Or, if you’re headed to a destination wedding that mandates a full face of glam, take advantage of the case’s six pockets to arrive fully stocked. It’s also easy to stow in your purse, for touch-ups on the go.
  • Dimensions: Folded: 9 x 4.5 x 4.5 inches; unfolded: 11 x 9 x 6.5 inches

Best for Makeup: Béis The Cosmetics Case

Image may contain: Bag, Accessories, Handbag, and Briefcase

The Cosmetics Case

  • Why we love it: Traveling with makeup in tow makes the occasional foundation leak or eyeshadow crumble all but inevitable. Luckily, this minimalist travel case was designed to take the sting out of spills. With faux leather on the outside and PVC material on the inside, it’s easy to wipe clean. Plus, special features—including hidden magnets that hold multiple makeup brushes and a portable mirror with a prop-up stand—allow one to travel like a true makeup artiste.
  • Dimensions: 9.5 x 7.5 x 4 inches

Best Clear: Calpak Large Clear Cosmetics Case

Image may contain: Accessories, Bag, Handbag, and Purse

Large Clear Cosmetics Case

  • Why we love it: Whether you’re looking for your favorite blush on a European vacation or choosing a lipgloss before work in the morning, a clear cosmetics case makes it easy to see what you’re working with. Calpak’s see-through case not only comes through with visibility. It also has two separate, roomy storage containers that make it simple to stash lots of products. What’s more, two top handles make the bag easy to whisk around, and a zippered interior pocket serves as a convenient catch-all for small items like tweezers and single eyeshadows.
  • Dimensions: 11.5 x 5.25 x 9 inches

Best Hanging: Away The Hanging Toiletry Bag

Image may contain: Accessories, Bag, Handbag, and Baggage

What’s more, it protects products’ cleanliness while on the go: The organizer is not only resistant to water and stains; it’s also antimicrobial and anti-mold.
  • Dimensions: 7 x 13.5 x 5.75 inches

Best Splurge: Westman Atelier

Image may contain: Accessories, Bag, and Handbag

Westman Atelier

The Train Case

WESTMAN ATELIER

  • Why we love it: When cult makeup artist Gucci Westman partnered with Métier to design her “dream” travel case, she emphasized luxurious detailing—without compromising practicality. The Westman Atelier carryall is handmade in Italy from sustainably sourced Tuscan bouclé, which is not only handsome but water-resistant. Lined with double-faced, vintage-inspired fabric, the interior is water-resistant, too. The heat-sealed base easily wipes clean with a damp cloth, and the solid brass zipper has a silky smooth glide. Naturally, Westman designed the storage through the eye of a true makeup lover, adding six compartments, a spacious zippered pouch, and a main body that can hold skincare, perfume, supplements, and more.
  • Dimensions: 8.5 x 7.25 x 3.5 inches

Like choosing a hotel or Airbnb for your next getaway, your products’ temporary home should be thoughtfully considered, too. While a beautifully-designed case lends undeniable appeal to a hotel vanity or even a workspace, keep these practical considerations in mind as well:

  • Material: The best toiletry bags should be made of a durable material that can stand up to being overstuffed—and be easily wiped clean in the case of spills or smudges. For instance, Westman Atelier’s sumptuous train case is lined with double-faced performance fabric inspired by 1960s beach umbrellas, while Rains’s waterproof Wash Bag is crafted from durable, 100% polyester. If quick visibility is what you’re after, consider a clear case: Calpak’s see-through bag , made of polyurethane and PVC, is a roomy option that can hold everything from skincare to passports and sleep masks for easy access.
  • Size: The best toiletry bag for you will handily stow however many products you need on the go—whether that’s just the basics for an easy, everyday makeup routine, or brushes, bottles, and palettes that will leave full glam on hand. For the former, Dagne Dover’s Mila Toiletry Organizer has a compact, circular design that’s easy to tuck into luggage or use as a carry-on; it measures 5.5 x 5.5 x 5.5 inches. Meanwhile, Everlane’s cleverly collapsible case measures 9 x 4.5 x 4.5 inches when it’s folded; unfolded:, it expands to 11 x 9 x 6.5 inches. Keep height in mind, too: If you want to store bottles and liquids upright, or are packing longer brushes, consider an upright option like The Container Store’s Parraelle Traveller Bag , which is 7 inches high.
  • Portability : The best toiletry bags are also easy to tote around. While selecting the right bag for your jaunt, consider packing a bag that can be easily carried (or flown!) around while keeping products safely in place, such as July’s Vanity Cosmetic Case . If it’s not being stowed in a tote or suitcase, you’ll want it to have a practical carrying handle, such as the Béis The Cosmetics Case , or a roomy base to rest atop a carry-on.

Munchkin Sparrow Ultra-Compact Stroller

The modern age of jet travel can be so undignified — with all of the restricted liquids and backed-up security checkpoints and none of the smart-looking suits and in-flight carving stations of the PanAm golden years. These days, the key to making it work is amassing niche expertise about TSA minutiae, having TSA PreCheck, and stocking up on the right gear.

Everlane Renew Transit Weekender

Meghan Markle is among the cadre of celebs who appreciate the sleek, quiet luxury of Everlane’s logo-free and eco-friendly travel bags. This TSA-approved weekender is tricked out with features, including a padded laptop sleeve, two water bottle holders, an exterior zip pocket, and a trolly handle sleeve that also doubles as a pocket. Carry it as a crossbody, shoulder bag, or in hand. This bag is made from 100 percent recycled polyester from recycled plastic bottles.

Stanley Legendary 1.5-Quart Bottle

Pro tip: TSA permits liquids over three ounces as long as they are in their frozen state — and remain fully frozen through the checkpoint. So freeze your water in the internet’s favorite water bottle du jour , hydrate as it melts, and reuse the vessel over and over again at your destination. This cool Stanley in neon hues has double-wall vacuum insulation, a twist-and-pour stopper for a smooth pour and an insulated lid that doubles as a cup.

Kind Laundry Detergent Sheets

Need to stretch your carry-on-only wardrobe as far as possible? Plan to launder some of your staple pieces and re-wear them. Make it easy with these eco-friendly and TSA-compliant laundry detergent sheets by Kind , which take up close to no space (and produce no landfill waste). The pack of premeasured, pre-cut sheets easily drops into a backpack or even a purse.

Cadence The Honeycomb Set of 7 Flex Capsules

TSA’s liquids restrictions, combined with exorbitant costs and notorious mishandling associated with checking luggage, necessitate the need for a good system for packing toiletries. Cadence’s aesthetically appealing travel capsules are made for performance, with super-tight locking lids and magnetic sides that connect like a honeycomb. Customizable top tiles let you view what’s inside at a glance.

Lysol to Go Wipes

The pandemic may officially be over but there’s always a buffet of germs swirling around airports and airplanes just waiting to get you sick and derail your travel plans. Safeguard against it with these TSA-complaint wipes that kill 99.9 percent of viruses and bacteria, including eright cold and flu viruses. Pro tip: Take one out of the resealable pack when you get on the plane and wipe down your tray table, armrests and other high-touch surfaces.

BAGSMART Clear Toiletry Bag, 2 Pack

TSA’s 3-1-1 rule requires travelers only bring liquids, gels, creams, aerosols and pasts must be in a 3.4-oz. container or smaller, and that all of those products should fit in one clear quart-sized bag. Bagsmart’s clear zippered toiletry bags meet all of these guidelines — and we like that this two-pack is affordable and comes in a variety of colors.

Tumi TSA Luggage Locks

Keep your stuff secure on your journey —and increase your peace of mind — by locking it up. But, to avoid an unpleasant surprise when you reclaim your checked bags, make sure you use a TSA-approved style. The agency recognizes and approves this style of lock , so agents can open them as needed without cutting the lock or damaging your bags in the process. Solidly made and built to last, these luggage locks come in a pack of three colors for easy identification.

HiBar Shampoo and Conditioner Set

Sure, TSA puts a max on liquids. But if your shampoo and conditioner aren’t in liquid form, you can sidestep the issue entirely. Carry them in solid form with this shampoo and conditioner bar set by HiBar, formulated with rice water and vitamin B for volumizing and adding texture. Eco-friendly and travel-ready, these products are plastic-free , right down to the shipping materials. (Grab the coordinating pouch for efficient travel.)

Apple AirTag

Whether you’re checking luggage or bringing a carry-on , TSA has to screen it — and that means plenty of opportunities for loss or other mismanagement. Keep tabs on all of your stuff by outfitting every piece with its own GPS tracker in the form of an AirTag , which is on sale for 14 percent off (or get 20 percent off when you buy the four-pack ). Then follow it throughout the journey using the Find My app.

Wild One Pet Carrier

Wild One’s TSA-compliant pet carrier is stylish and understated, available in black or chic tan and limited edition colors (like this k. The inside is roomy, and the breathable mesh walls allow two-way communication with your little buddy. The carrier also folds out to become a travel mat for dogs to lounge on in the airport — and wherever else your travels take you.

Munchkin Sparrow Ultra-Compact Stroller

If you know, you know: Traveling with all the gear needed for littles can be a whole to-do. Make it easier by keeping a compact stroller with you at all times in the cabin. Munchkin’s Sparrow ultra-compact folding stroller folds down to fit in tight spaces, including overhead bins, ensuring hassle-free travel through TSA checkpoints and beyond. When folded down, it measures just 15 inches on its longest side and weighs under 13 pounds.

The best travel wash bags to pack on your next trip

By Charley Ward

All products are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something, we may earn an affiliate commission.

As a team that's constantly travelling around the world, our editors have strong opinions when it comes to packing. A quality suitcase is a must, packing cubes are the secret key to travelling hand luggage only, and an organised wash bag is an absolute essential. The tricky part is pretty much every accessories brand, hotel and even airline has a wash bag now. Much like the mass of branded tote bags out there, the average bag tends to be a printed canvas zip-up pouch that can look nice but isn't that practical when it comes to travelling.

In our experience, the best way to choose the right travel wash bag depends on the kind of trip you're set to take.

For short trips: I love the ease of a clear case for stashing all of your essentials. Not only is it easy to find everything, but if you're travelling with only carry on luggage , a clear case avoids the need to unpack and repack your items into one of those plastic sleeves when going through security at the airport.

For long trips: Whether you're in one place for a long time or travelling around multiple destinations, hanging wash bags offer the feel of unpacking without having to actually unpack all of your products.

For beauty fans: Regardless of the length of your trip, if you're not one for travelling light consider investing in a cosmetic case, which are larger than your average wash bag and full of compartments and pouches to keep everything organised.

The best clear wash bags

best travel bag for makeup and toiletries

Why we like it: If you’re travelling for more than a couple of days, I use the  Space NK Large Travel Bags  or  Medium Travel Bags . They are brilliant for organising your wares into categories, and because they’re clear, it’s easy to find things fast. Anita Bhagwandas

Image may contain: Accessories, Bag, and Handbag

Why we like it: This svelte wash bag has all the hallmarks of an Anya Hindmarch piece. Much like the brand’s clever in-flight bag, it’s been crafted to house all your essentials just so, with smart embossed labels for each compartment. There’s a roomy monogrammed nylon section, and a clear one for easy access to most-used products. Gold finishes and smart monogramming makes this an effortlessly chic buy that’ll work comfortably for trips of up to two-weeks in length.

Classic wash bags

Image may contain: Accessories, Bag, Handbag, and Purse

Why we like it: This is one of the roomier wash bags we rate, so it should be all you need to keep your personal care items safe throughout trips of up to two weeks. There are separate compartments for your makeup and skincare, along with additional pockets for brushes. Choose from four colours, or there’s also a clear version. At under £20, it’s a steal – and it would make a great gift for a frequent traveller.

Why we like it: Because of the pockets. This sleek, unobtrusive wash bag packs in six side pockets, a separate hidden compartment and two main sections for bulkier products, making it as easy as can be to organise all your products abroad. A handle makes it easy to tote from suitcase to bathroom, and the PVC outer can be easily refreshed with a quick wipe down if needed.

For long trips: hanging wash bags

Image may contain: Accessories, Bag, and Handbag

Why we like it: I fit a week’s worth of makeup and skincare with room to spare in this Mary Poppins-esque washbag on a recent trip – and the shape fits snugly into a corner of your case. I like that it opens out flat, banishing the need to rummage, and there are two interior pockets for hair ties and little bits and bobs. Good to know? I accidentally spilled something inside the bag and was nervous to put it through the washing machine, but it came out good-as-new – I appreciate this, given it’s on the pricier side. Charley Ward

Why we like it: After hours of research, Bagsmart Toiletry Travel Bag With Hook is the ultimate long-haul travel bag. It may look like any other wash bag, but it is the smallest details that make this a winner. The design ensures that it packs flat, even when it’s stuffed full, there are compartments for everything you’d ever need, and it has a hanger to save valuable space in the bathroom. It’s perfect. Anita Bhagwandas

best travel bag for makeup and toiletries

Why we like it: I recently took this on a two week trip where I stayed at three different hotels. I was travelling with my family and this made storing and organising all of our bathroom items a breeze. I particularly loved the bottom compartment which can be completely detached and has a sheer top so you can store all of your in-flight essentials and take it through security and onto the flight. Very clever. Lauren Burvill

For beauty fans: vanity cases

Image may contain: Accessories, Bag, Handbag, Baggage, and Suitcase

Why we like it: Fans of Steamline’s vintage luggage pieces can complete their set with the brand’s sweet little vanity case. It’s on the pricier side, but what other wash bag doubles up as a handbag? Inside there’s a roomy main compartment for all your bits and pieces, along with a mesh bag to keep jewellery and hair ties easily to hand. This case can be attached to your suitcase with the passthrough band too – good for if you’re using it as an underseat cabin bag.

Why we like it: Firstly, the colour – when it comes to brightly coloured luggage Beis is the best in the business. Inside there's plenty of storage and pockets including a very clever removable makeup brush holder with hidden magnets – a genius hack to avoid getting your brushes dirty or damaged. My favourite part though is the slip pocket with a removable mirror – ideal for when the lighting in your hotel bathroom isn't the best. Lauren Burvill

Why we like it: For a truly luxe option, this Smythson case is crafted in their signature Panama cross-grain leather and comes in three shades – black, pale blue and beige. Inside, there are two main zip-up compartments, as well as additional storage pockets, including ruched pockets and elastic straps to keep everything neatly in place. Lauren Burvill

The Best Way To Pack Makeup And Keep Your Toiletry Bag Mess-Free

E ven if you're the type of traveler who packs your bag hours (minutes!) before you depart on a trip, spending some extra time organizing your makeup and cosmetics is essential, particularly if you're flying to your destination.

Strict regulations limit the quantity and size of liquids you can carry onboard an aircraft in most countries around the world. If you're careful with your packing, you can avoid having to throw away expensive products before you can pass through security -- or facing the risk of missing your flight. If you plan on checking a bag , you'll have more flexibility on what products you can pack. However, you'll still run the risk of messy spills as the plane's pressurization changes during take-off and landing.

Whether you like to travel with the bare necessities or you're a fashionista who enjoys creating elaborate looks on your vacations, a well-packed makeup bag will keep your travels stress-free and mess-free.

Read more: 10 Items Better To Buy Than Pack

Consider Your Mode Of Transportation

If you're going on a short trip (or prefer to travel light), you will likely pack all your essentials into one carry-on suitcase to avoid lugging around extra bags. Limiting yourself to a carry-on bag will require you to narrow your makeup collection to the everyday essentials. Before you even begin packing, pay attention to which cosmetic products you use daily -- the ones you can't live without.

According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) , travelers can bring one quart-sized bag full of toiletries in their carry-on baggage. Any cosmetics or personal care products that are liquids, gels, aerosols, creams, or pastes must be in 3.4 ounces or less containers and fit within the clear quart-sized bag. Liquid foundations, lotions, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, and hairsprays are all examples of products that you'll need to ensure fit the 3.4 ounces or under requirements. Solid cosmetics like powder foundation or lipsticks won't be regulated. You can separate solids from liquids if your cosmetics and toiletries don't fit in the quart-sized bag.

If you're worried about space, consider swapping liquids for solid options. You can purchase solid toothpaste tablets that double as breath mints. You can also swap your hair care gels for solid shampoo and conditioner bars.

How To Pack A Makeup Bag If You're Checking Luggage

The limited space in a carry-on bag and the TSA requirements for liquids can make it challenging to pack your toiletry bag. There's no shame in being a maximalist, and travel is an ideal opportunity to express yourself and try out new and exciting makeup looks. Whether you're traveling for an extended period or excited to create many different makeup styles during your trip, chances are you'll need to check a bag.

The great news when it comes to checking a bag is that you'll have plenty of space and the flexibility to bring whatever you choose. The TSA has no liquid limitations regarding checked baggage, so you can pack as many full-size cosmetic and personal care products as you desire without stuffing them into a tiny bag (and potentially damaging your favorite products).

When packing your makeup bag in a checked suitcase, your primary concern should be pressurization. Ensure that liquids are stored in plastic or silicone bags to keep them from creating a mess if they explode. This sometimes happens due to the changes in pressurization in the airplane's cargo hold. For added safety, you can wrap your liquids in plastic wrap .

Find The Right Toiletry Bag Or Makeup Pouches And Stay Organized During Your Trip

Investing in a great travel makeup bag will help ensure that you can keep your products organized for the duration of your trip. Some excellent options are on the market, including large bags with multiple compartments. Some even come equipped with hangers and clear compartments to hang on the bathroom door when you arrive at your destination, allowing you to free up counter space.

Select different size pouches to keep your products organized within your toiletry bag. You can use plastic baggies, but if you travel often it might be worth investing in some small reusable bags or pouches of various sizes to help you organize products by size and type.

Divide your products up by type to help keep things organized. Consider separating your skincare, hairstyling products, and makeup into separate bags. Many travel toiletry bags have detachable clear plastic bags that are perfect for liquids, which might otherwise spill and cause a mess. Lump together solids like lipsticks and eyeshadow palettes in a separate bag or compartment. Finally, pack your brushes and makeup applicators.

Pack Multi-Purpose Makeup

When packing the perfect toiletry bag for your vacation, consider the products you use daily. In the days leading up to your trip, pay attention to the products you gravitate towards most that are the easiest to use.

If you wear makeup, consider packing items that can be used in multiple ways to create various looks without taking up a ton of space. Swap out heavy liquid foundations for a cream complexion stick that can be used as both foundation and concealer -- or grab a solid blush stick that can double as a buildable lip color.

Consider narrowing down your makeup to five essential products for an ideal minimalist beauty routine. You'll want to choose one product for your complexion, such as a tinted moisturizer or a cream foundation stick. Pair this with a tinted brow gel, a travel-sized mascara, a cream blush that you can wear as lipstick, and a neutral eyeshadow palette that can create multiple looks for both day and night.

Once you've packed the basics, you can add a few specialty items as space allows. Go ahead and throw in that luminous highlighter or the extra lipstick you love to fill the space you have in your makeup bag.

Purchase Travel Travel-Size Minis Of Your Favorite Products

It's worth investing in travel-sized minis of your favorite products. Many brands create sample or mini sizes of some of their top products. If you travel a lot , you can have your travel makeup kit pre-packed and ready each time you embark on a trip.

Beauty samples are the perfect sizes to take on trips, but make sure it's a product you'll actually use; otherwise, it will simply take up extra space. Mini-size products are perfect for those who don't want to sacrifice their beauty routine and will save a ton of space in your bag.

Another option is to invest in some refillable travel containers that you can fill up with the everyday products you use at home. If you're using refillable decanters, purchase a set of labels and handwrite (or type out a label for each product) so that you don't accidentally end up washing your hair with body lotion.

Calpak Review: Is the Popular Luggage Worth The Hype?

We've put some of the most popular styles from Calpak to the test. These are the picks that we think are worth buying.

calpak reviewa couple of shopping carts

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

If you're anything like me and want to travel in style but still need luggage that's going to hold up to your frequent flyer status, look no further than Calpak.

As an analyst at the Good Housekeeping Institute , I test and write about all kinds of luggage — from carry-ons to checked bags , hardside suitcases to softside styles — and I can't get enough of Calpak's pieces, and neither can many of my fellow GH analysts and editors as well as our consumer testers . We've taken the brand's luggage on our own vacations, and it regularly stands out as a top performer in our Lab tests, beating out popular pieces from other well-known brands.

Read on to learn more about some of the most popular pieces Calpak offers and our honest insights into why we think they're worth the investment.

Calpak Ambeur Carry-On Luggage

Ambeur Carry-On Luggage

The sleek and sturdy hardsided suitcases of Calpak's Ambeur collection are designed with wheels that roll effortlessly over carpet, tile and wood floor. Each piece is lightweight with comfortable carrying handles that make it easy to lift, so I don't have to worry about holding up the line when I'm loading my suitcase into the overhead bin on a plane. The polycarbonate and ABS plastic composite material held up well in our drop tests without dents but did show more surface-level scratches than other suitcases we've tested, so there's a possibility you may notice some scuffs and marks after retrieving your bag from the luggage carousel.

I love the interior of the carry-on bag, which unzips to two primary packing compartments: one side with a full zippered panel and another with compression straps to secure your belongings in place. There are plenty of organizational features like two zippered mesh pockets and a removable mesh toiletries bag, and as a self-proclaimed over-packer, I'm especially fond of the 2-inch expansion system so I can fill the suitcase with my favorite vacation clothes and shoes and still have room for souvenirs.

Calpak Luka Soft-Sided Carry-On Luggage

Luka Soft-Sided Carry-On Luggage

Puffy padding is totally on-trend right now, and Calpak gets it. The brand's Luka collection includes this cute softside carry-on that has a special tapered design to help keep it upright when you stuff it full of your belongings. The carry-on is on the smaller side, so it's not ideal for a long trip, but it's perfect for a weekend getaway or to hold your travel must-haves if you're checking a larger bag. I'm a fan of the two outer pockets that take some of the stress out of the TSA line. Instead of digging through your bag for your laptop or boarding pass, there's a larger front pocket that's equipped to hold a 17-inch laptop and a smaller side pocket that can fit your passport and ID.

Inside, you'll find one main packing compartment with secure compression straps and elasticized mesh pockets built into the lid for more organization. The suitcase is made with a smooth polyester material that should be easy to wipe clean after a long trip. It's equipped with 360-spinner wheels and padded handles to make rolling the bag through a busy airport a little easier.

Duffels and backpacks

Calpak luka duffel.

Luka Duffel

Just as chic as its carry-on counterpart, Calpak's Luka duffel is a favorite of GH analysts and editors and is our number one pick for weekender bags . The trendy duffel fits everything you need for a short trip, and when we packed it with a weekend's worth of clothing, accessories and toiletries, there was room to spare. There's a separate shoe compartment, water bottle pocket and a zippered outer pocket to easily access your essentials. You'll find even more elastic and zippered pockets inside to stash smaller items.

a gh staffer carrying the calpak luka duffel

The padded shoulder straps are comfortable to throw over your shoulder and don't dig in (pictured here). There's a removable crossbody strap too. If you don't want to lug around a bag while you're on the go, you'll find the luggage strap on this duffel to be especially handy. Simply slide the luggage sleeve over your suitcase's telescopic handle, and you can roll it around on top of your suitcase. One GH analyst who brought this duffel on a weekend trip noticed some unraveling at the seams around the luggage sleeve, but it remained in great shape overall. The material was easy to wipe clean, and it's water-resistant to keep your things dry, even if you're traveling in wet weather.

Calpak Terra Large 50L Duffel Backpack

Terra Large 50L Duffel Backpack

Perfect for your next adventure, this travel backpack is made of a laminated polyester ripstop material that's rugged and water resistant. The straps are padded for a more comfortable feel, and there's a sternum strap for extra support. The versatile backpack actually doubles as a duffel bag — just unbuckle the backpack straps, tuck them away and attach the crossbody strap to carry it over your shoulder. And it even has a luggage sleeve to slide over the handle of your favorite suitcase (pictured here).

a pink backpack duffel from calpak on a silver suitcase

Because the sides and bottom of the backpack aren't structured, you're able to fill it with everything you need, but that means it's also easy to overstuff, which can make it difficult to zip or become too heavy, causing the straps to dig into your shoulders. When you're packing the backpack, you'll find that it's completely full of organizational features — inside and out. There are small, zippered pockets on the outside of the bag to stow away your travel necessities, a water bottle pocket on the side and buckles to attach items you may not be able to fit inside, such as a travel blanket or poncho. Inside, there's a padded laptop pocket, along with compression straps and additional mesh zippered pockets.

Calpak Kaya 15 inch Laptop Backpack

Kaya 15 inch Laptop Backpack

If you're traveling for business or want something a little chicer, Calpak's Kaya laptop backpack is for you. This streamlined style is a favorite of GH analysts and editors, earning a top spot as our best work backpack . It's made of faux leather and features elegant details like gold hardware for the zippers and pulls, a rectangular shape and stitched trim. It's available in a collection of seven core colors like grey, black and navy, along with nearly 20 bold limited hues like lavender, bronze and emerald. The straps are thin and unpadded, so they can start to feel uncomfortable with extended wear, and I find the bag is best to use for a shorter commute.

To relieve the stress on your shoulders, there's a luggage sleeve that you can slide over your suitcase handle for easy transport. The backpack is equally as practical as it is stylish and can hold a significant amount of your belongings, including a 15-inch laptop, and there are a lot of small pockets inside for sunglasses, pens and notebooks.

Calpak packing cubes set (5 pieces).

Packing Cubes Set (5 Pieces)

I bring packing cubes with me on every single trip I take, even when I'm just carrying a backpack or weekender bag. These from Calpak help me keep all my belongings organized and easy to access on my journey and once I reach my destination , so I don't have to rummage through my suitcase to find what I'm looking for. They're not compressive like some of Calpak's other packing cubes , so they do take up more room in my bag than some other styles I've tried. That said, they feature breathable mesh details that help clothes to feel fresh, even after they've been shoved in a bag for days.

Calpak Large Clear Cosmetics Case

Large Clear Cosmetics Case

Another one of our staffers' favorites, Calpak's large toiletries case will hold everything you need, including some full-size products. At $95, this isn't the most affordable option on the market, but it's designed with thoughtful details like carrying handles, metal feet to keep it upright and a mesh pocket inside for your smaller items. The transparent case makes it easy to show your liquids during TSA screenings, and you can clearly see everything you packed without having to spend forever digging around to find it. The PVC material also makes it a breeze to wipe clean when your makeup or skincare products inevitably leak in your bag.

The best heatless curlers, according to hair stylists

Most heatless curlers are intended to be worn overnight for maximum effectiveness.

There have been a number of beauty trends on TikTok that are not worth the hype or that are even dangerous—like suctioning your lips to make them look fuller. But the social media platform is also filled with some pretty smart trends. Case in point: heatless curlers. Perhaps you’ve even seen videos of people with their strands wrapped around these silky tubes.

Made of a soft material, heatless curlers can give you bouncy waves without exposing your hair to the heat damage you risk with hot tools like traditional curling irons or flat irons . Even better? Experts say they really can. Below, we asked hair stylists and beauty experts to explain what heatless curlers are and how to shop for them — plus, we collected a list of expert- and NBC Select staff-recommended heatless curlers to try.

SKIP AHEAD What are heatless curlers? | How we picked the best heatless curlers | The best heatless curlers of 2024 | How to use heatless curlers

Selected. Our top picks

What are heatless curlers .

Heatless curlers are exactly what they sound like. “They require no heat, no electricity, no hot irons — they are just tools to set hair without heat and create curls,” says Meleesa Luna, a hairstylist and founder of Intuitive Beauty Studio . Most heatless curlers consist of a long foam tube covered in satin or silk that you wrap your hair around and secure with either clips or scrunchies. But this isn’t the only type of heatless curler. There are also individual heatless curlers. These act as more traditional curlers where you wrap sections of hair around a tool, let them set and then take them out.

What are the benefits of heatless curlers?

Hot tools (like curling and flat irons ) use heat to style your hair. Heat can damage your hair, dry it out and cause breakage. One of the biggest benefits of heatless curlers is you can achieve bouncy curls without potentially damaging your hair, says hairstylist Valery Joseph , founder of Valery Joseph Salons . Because of this, heatless curlers can be a particularly good option for those who have damaged or chemically treated hair, which can be more prone to breakage.

How we picked the best heatless curlers

When shopping for heatless curlers, the experts we spoke with suggested paying attention to the following factors:

  • Material: Joseph says most heatless curlers are either foam or foam covered in satin. We prioritized satin-covered curlers. Our experts shared that they are more gentle on your hair because there’s less friction.
  • Size: Pay close attention to size. “The longer your hair, the bigger the rod you want, because the hair would wrap more times around the diameter of the rod,” says Luna. “The shorter the hair, the smaller the rod you want.”
  • Type: There are a few types of heatless curlers. The most common type involves a long rod on top of your head, with the sides hanging down either side that you can wrap your hair around — almost like pigtails. The other type of heatless curlers are smaller, individual rods that you wrap sections of hair around.

The best heatless curlers of 2024

To help you choose the right heatless curlers, we gathered expert-recommended options, NBC Select staff favorites, and highly rated picks that meet the above criteria.

Kitsch Satin Heatless Curling Set

Kitsch Satin Heatless Curling Set

This heatless curling set consists of one long satin-covered tube. You put it on like a headband and then wrap your hair (in 2-inch sections) around either end, securing it with the two included satin scrunchies. “This set is the best,” says NBC Select updates editor Mili Godio. “The satin material is soft and easy to use once you get the hang of it.” For curls that last, the brand suggests wrapping damp hair around the foam tube, letting it set overnight and removing it for bouncy curls.

Silke London Heatless Curler Set

Silke London Heatless Curler Set

Similar to the set from Kitsch, this option from Silke London includes a foam rod and two scrunchies. It also includes a clip to help you fasten the tube to the top of your head for easier hair wrapping. Joseph notes this rod is longer than most, making it a good option for those with long hair. The rod and scrunchies are covered in 100% silk and can be worn for just a few hours or overnight for curls that will stay longer, according to the brand.

Halo Hair Labs Heatless Curling Kit

Halo Hair Labs Heatless Curling Kit

“Rather than a long rod, this option is more of a headband — which may be easier for some to sleep in,” says Joseph. To use, secure the down-filled rod on top of your head with the included claw clip. Wrap your hair in small sections around the silk-covered foam rod on either side of your head and secure each end with the included no-slip hair ties. Then, snap either end of the rod together at the back of your head so it stays in place all night.

HRYYDS Heatless Hair Curler

HRYYDS Heatless Hair Curler

According to the brand, this heatless curling rod is stuffed with cotton and covered in a combination of cotton and velvet, giving hair something to cling to without causing friction. The top of the rod has a flat design, making it sit on your head more easily. The set comes with two small clips to fasten it as a headband and two scrunches to secure your hair in place. This set has a 4.4-star average rating from over 16,250 reviews on Amazon.

Aimin Soft Overnight Curlers

Aimin Soft Overnight Curlers

Aimin Soft Overnight Curlers

Do you prefer individual curlers over one long rod? This set comes with 30 individual satin-covered sponge rollers. To use them, take 2-inch sections of damp hair, wrap them and secure them by typing the two ends of the curlers together. For best results, sleep in them overnight. Unlike the single rod options, this set will give you a fuller, more curly look. It has a 4.2-star average rating from over 10,970 reviews on Amazon.

How to use heatless curlers

One thing to know beforehand: “Heatless curlers take some practice to get uniform curls,” says Joseph. So, it’s a good idea to do a few trial runs when you don’t have somewhere important to be — that way, if you don’t like how they turn out, you’re not left scrambling. To make the process smoother for you, we asked our experts for a step-by-step guide on using them.

Step one : Prep your hair with your favorite products. “If you have fine, straight hair, you would want to spray your hair or prep it with something that will give your hair support as it wraps around the curler,” says Luna. “If you have curly or frizzy hair, you might want to use a serum or a cream to soften it.”

Step two : Wrap damp hair around your curling rod (or curling rods). You want it to be about 90 percent dry, says Joseph. Regardless of whether you use one long rod or a bunch of smaller rods, take 2-inch sections and wrap them around the rod. Finish by securing hair to the rod.

Step three : If you plan on sleeping in your heatless curlers, Luna suggests wrapping your hair with a silk scarf or bonnet to avoid flyaways and frizz. Another option is to sleep on a silk pillowcase.

Step four : Mist hair with a light-hold hairspray before taking your hair out. Then, gently unwrap your hair from the curlers and run your fingers through your curls to loosen them.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Sleeping with heatless curlers is smart for a few reasons. First, it gives your curls extra time to set. Plus, sleeping with them can save you time in the morning; you just have to unwrap your hair and you’re good to go, says Luna.

“Heatless curlers can give you many different looks,” says Luna. “It all depends on your hair length, texture, and the type of curler you use — the smaller the diameter of the curler, the more curl you'll get. The wider the rod, the looser the curl will be.” It also depends on how much hair you wrap around the rods. Bigger sections will lead to looser curls, whereas smaller sections will give you tighter curls.

13 Best Travel Toiletry Bottles: Editor Tested, Leakproof, & Reusable

13 Best Travel Toiletry Bottles Editor Tested Leakproof Reusable

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Beauty and skincare products like shampoo, moisturizer, and face wash are essential on every packing list , whether you're heading to a hotel or are staying with friends or family. Since buying miniature versions of your favorite products can be expensive—and typically means purchasing a whole lot of single-use plastics—having practical and reliable toiletry travel bottles you can pull out for every trip is a must.

To make sure the reusable bottles we're throwing in our Dopp kit are easy to use and don't leak, we tested out a variety of affordable travel sets to see which ones actually get the job done. Below, you'll find 13 of the best travel toiletry bottles that will protect the contents of your luggage—and all of the creams, soaps, and serums you've shelled out for—and keep you organized on the go. Even better, all of these picks are TSA-friendly in size, so you don't have to worry about any of your favorite products being thrown out at the airport. As an added bonus, many of these travel bottles are available on Amazon Prime, so you can get your hands on them quickly before a last-minute getaway.

How we tested

I scoured the internet to find the most popular travel toiletry bottles—searching a variety of retailers, reading hundreds of reviews, and considering online ratings. After my initial research, I put many reusable toiletry bottles to the test, trying out dozens of options that range in price, size, and design. I've had some of these toiletry bottles for over a year and they've accompanied me on a mix of weeklong vacations in checked luggage and short weekend trips in tightly-packed duffel bags .

Over the last several months, I tested another batch of options: I've filled them with a variety of skincare, hair care, and body products—thick body wash, contact solution, and leave-in conditioner included. I've even left these filled containers upside down overnight to see if there were any unexpected leaks. My findings: There are many great options on the market to choose from and you don't need to break the bank to find the perfect set for you. Below, the best travel toiletry bottles to pack wherever you're headed next .

best travel bag for makeup and toiletries

No matter how organized I try to stay, my bathroom counter at every hotel always becomes cluttered with my many toiletries and hair products . The LiquiSnugs look like your classic silicone travel bottles, but they feature a clever suction cup on the back that allows you to stick them onto any shower wall—freeing up limited counter space. These are great for in-shower products like shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. This set of four bottles features two 3-ounce bottles and two 2-ounce bottles, so you can choose how much product you need depending on the length of your trip. Another smart design feature: Twist the top to adjust the label name so you won't forget what's inside. I've had these for about a year now and I consistently reach for these to pack shampoo and conditioner.

Pros : The unique suction cup design makes them great for shower products.

Cons : These occasionally will fall off shower walls if there's not a little bit of water to keep them in place.

best travel bag for makeup and toiletries

This Amazon bestseller is versatile enough for every type of traveler. The 18-pack from Tocelffe features four silicone bottles of varying size (two 3-ounce bottles and two 2-ounce bottles), four small jars for creams and serums, two spray bottles, two spatulas, a funnel, labels, and a cleaning brush. These all come in a waterproof toiletry bag that you can reuse to carry makeup or tech essentials. In this set, I find myself mostly reaching for the ultra-soft silicone bottles, which are great for products like body wash, face cleanser, and micellar water. Each of these bottles feature three-layer leak-proof tops so you don't have to worry about spills in your bag. Something I love about these bottles is how they can be bent and squeezed easily to get every last bit of product out of them.

Pros: Very affordable, comes in a clear toiletry case, and the bottles' wide opening makes it easy to refill. Cons: The small plastic jars are not as reliable as the silicone bottles in this set.

best travel bag for makeup and toiletries

If you're just looking for a few affordable no-frills travel bottles, these are for you. Available in a variety of colors, the silicone bottles do just what they say they will. They're leakproof, come in a set of four, and are easy to refill and clean. While there’s no bells and whistles, these three-ounce bottles pleasantly surprised me with just how much product they fit compared to some of the other classic silicone bottles we tested, making them an ideal option for a longer vacation. Plus, these have an average of 4.5 stars on Amazon with over 11,000 global reviews.

Pros: Versatility; available in many colorways

Cons : This set doesn't come with labels or a proper toiletry case.

best travel bag for makeup and toiletries

Another solid choice for travelers is this set of four 3-ounce silicone travel bottles. These are squeezable, leakproof, and versatile enough to use for everything from shower products and soaps to sauces and baby food. These reusable bottles are all the same size and each a different color so you can differentiate them. Bonus: This set comes in a transparent toiletry case to keep them all organized in.

Pros : This set is available in a dozen colorways; wide opening makes them easy to refill without needing a funnel. Cons : This set doesn't come with labels.

best travel bag for makeup and toiletries

If you prefer to bring along a bar of soap instead of using what's provided at the hotel, this compact soap box is a great travel companion. Inside, there's a soap mat that absorbs any excess water and prevents the soap from becoming mushy. I've used other plastic soap cases before without a mat and it always leaves a mess. This one features a silicone band that wraps tightly around the box for extra protection, and is about the size of a deck of cards.

Pros : Fits most commonly used soap brands, affordable, and features a simple-to-use design.

Cons : The soap box needs the band to stay secure so be careful not to lose it.

best travel bag for makeup and toiletries

I've been a fan of Cadence's capsules for a few years now. These leakproof, airtight, and watertight magnetic capsules are unlike any other travel bottles I've used and are a true game changer when it comes to packing your own beauty products. The individual capsules magnetically snap together to take up as little space as possible in your Dopp kit and are designed without any right angles or edges, so you get every last bit of product available.

The original .56-ounce individual capsules are great for weekend trips and storing small items like daily vitamins and safety pins. The Capsule Flex System allows you to customize your own bundle with your choice of small , medium , and large sizes, as well as The Extender —an add-on that allows you to increase the size of the bottle when you need more room. This makes it so easy to customize your travel routine, whether you want to pack extra product for longer trips or bring enough body wash for you and your travel buddy. With The Flex System, you can still choose your own label for each capsule (the labels are interchangeable), as well as the color and number of capsules in your bundle.

Pros : It's easy to get every last drop of product inside each capsule and they are so easy to rinse out and reuse. The custom labels can be swapped out depending on what you're packing.

Cons : These are the most expensive option on our list.

best travel bag for makeup and toiletries

I was eager to test out the Ries travel bottles after hearing a lot of buzz about the product and seeing them make their way into retailers like Sephora and Goop. These are a more elevated, aesthetically pleasing take on the classic reusable travel bottles you may have used in the past. Ries prioritized sustainability and design with these essentials: Each bottle is made from recycled plastic and features a large opening at the top, which makes it easy to refill and clean (not to mention, they're dishwasher safe). Travelers can purchases these bottles individually (a 3.4-ounce bottle or a 1.7-ounce bottle) or in a set with both sizes . My favorite thing about these bottles is the airless pump—I feel so glamorous while doing my nighttime skincare routine with these, and it makes it easier to use products like face wash or cleanser on the road. The bottles are pre-labeled (shampoo, conditioner, body, face) and you can twist the top to the side to conceal the opening, so product won't spill out.

Pros : Sustainably made; if you prefer a pump, these are for you.

Cons : On the pricier side; the bottles are a bit bulky and take up a little more room in my makeup bag than most travel-size products I use.

best travel bag for makeup and toiletries

Finally, a solution to my contact lens woes. I can't count the number of times I've stopped into a drugstore to buy a mini bottle of contact lens solution before heading out on a trip, or to pick up rewetting drops because I'm dealing with dry contacts while away from home. This compact case makes cleaning and caring for contacts on the go much easier—it comes with an easy-to-fill reusable dropper that gives me a long weekend's worth of solution, a contact case, and has a mirror to help get them in and out. (I don't like to fly in contacts, so this is particularly handy if I forget to switch to my glasses before leaving home.) It weighs next to nothing, and will fit in all but my smallest handbags, so I've been keeping it on me regularly, not just when traveling. — Madison Flager, senior commerce editor

Pros : It comes with a tiny pair of tweezers to make removing contacts from the case less messy. Cons : The contact solution holder isn't large enough for weeklong trips.

best travel bag for makeup and toiletries

I admit I've also been guilty of buying mini versions of my favorite contact solution. As much as I love reusable toiletry bottles for my skincare and hair products, I've never had anything that felt right for the consistency of my contact solution. I wear daily lenses, meaning I don't need a whole lot of solution with me when I travel, so it is a little frustrating to carry around a bottle that takes up precious space in my Dopp kit. Lately, I've been carrying about the Cauyuan eye glass case which comes with a super small dropper for contact solution. This refillable dropper holds just enough contact solution for weekend trips and shorter vacations and takes up such little space (I've even found myself tossing it in my handbag in case my eyes get a little dry.) This durable case keeps all of my eye care essentials together and protected, with a separate compartment for eye glasses, and another that holds the dropper, tweezers, a contact case, and a mirror.

Pros : All of my eyewear essentials are now in once place and stay organized; the dropper is small enough to fit in a tiny purse. Cons : The compartment for your eye glasses is on the small size—if you have thick or bulky frames, they might not fit.

best travel bag for makeup and toiletries

I've never found a reusable spray bottle for my perfume that I've liked, so I've always relied on buying miniature versions of each of my favorite fragrances. But let's be real—those travel-size perfume bottles are expensive! They're often made of glass, too, making them vulnerable to breaking in your luggage. Enter the Vonovo mini refillable perfume bottles: Each of these holds 0.2 ounces of your favorite scent, more than enough for a long vacation. This set comes with five spray bottles, so you can bring along any of your favorites—or all of them. And they are so easy to use—simply pull off the top of your full-size perfume, press the bottom of the mini bottle on top of it, and keep clicking until its refilled. Each of the bottles have a clear vial inside so you can see how much product you have left. My favorite part: These are so tiny—think the size of a lipstick— meaning I can even bring them with me on a date night when I'm only carrying a small purse .

Pros : Easy to refill and compact enough to fit in even the tiniest of travel bags Cons : These spray bottles wont match the look of your full-size perfume and don't have labels, so you'll have to remember based on the color of the mini bottle you choose. Also, these can be refilled with the same perfume, but I wouldn't recommend reusing them with another scent.

best travel bag for makeup and toiletries

For those with a more rigid skincare or haircare routine, this 16-pack lets you bring along every last product you want—and it all fits into one reusable case. The set comes with four silicone bottles, four jars, two spray bottles, two scoopers, a funnel, and a cleaning brush. The variety means you can pack everything from soap and shampoo to serums and sprays in here, and the cleaning brush makes the bottles easy to clean and re-use. I like this set best for packing my more expensive skincare serums and creams in the small jars that have a scooper to use.

Pros : A variety of types of containers

Cons : The toiletry case the bottles come in isn't the best quality.

best travel bag for makeup and toiletries

The Kitsch Ultimate travel set includes leakproof holders that are compact and lightweight enough to pack in a purse or tote bag . In addition to three flat pouches, this set also comes with two pump bottles, two mini jars, one mini funnel, one mini spatula, and one mini pipette. This set is best for a longer trip—say, a European vacation or a cross-country road trip —as you can store a lot more shampoo, conditioner, and lotions in the pouches without going over any TSA limits (plus, they'll get lighter as you use them).

Pros : The flat pouches are easy to pack and take up less room in a Dopp kit than bulkier bottles.

Cons : The pouches are a little bit harder to refill than bottles with a wide opening.

best travel bag for makeup and toiletries

If you're packing toiletries for your entire family , this 21-pack of travel bottles has you covered. This package comes with four silicone bottles, four cream jars, four toothbrush covers, two spray bottles, two pump bottles, two trowels, a funnel, and labels to keep everything straight. Whether it's a trip to Disney World or multi-generational cruise , this set makes packing for the whole family easy.

Pros : These come with toothbrush covers–a nice travel accessory that none of the other options on our list offers.

Cons : Not ideal for weekend trips or light packers.
