‘The Big 5’:

A trip to Africa is not complete without experiencing a wildlife safari. Safaris allow you to get up close to the wild animals where they live and feed. You will be going on the search for the illusive ‘Big Five’ game: the African lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and the Cape buffalo. They are nicknamed the ‘big five’ because they are the most difficult animals to catch. On safari you will not only witness a wide variety of wildlife in their natural habitat, but you will also be surrounded by beautiful scenery and stunning landscapes as well.

Cosmopolitan Cities:

The continent is home to many great port cities that sit along the shores of the stunning seas and thriving economic centers of business that boast rich histories reaching back thousands of years. From Cape Town and Johannesburg, the most populous and dynamic cities in South Africa, to Casablanca and Fes in Morocco, where contemporary art and culture scenes thrive along ancient traditions.

Luxor, Egypt:

Luxor is often referred to as the world's greatest open-air museum. Travelers have visited this city, parted by the Nile River, for centuries. Even the Greeks and Romans would journey to see the treasures that lie here. Its immense number of monuments is incredible. There’s the famous Valley of the Kings, which boasts 63 royal tombs, one even more elaborate than the next…and Karnak, a vast complex of temples and gigantic statues including the Temple of Amun, known to be the largest religious building ever constructed. Luxor will bring you back to ancient times while you are awed by the wealth of its leaders and the skill of its people.

Victoria Falls:

This powerful cascade is spectacular. At one mile wide and 360 feet high, it is the largest waterfall in the world and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Located on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe in southern Africa, the Falls lie along the Zambezi River. Game-viewers, bird-watchers, thrill-seekers and fishermen flock here to explore the Falls and surrounding pristine wilderness protected by the Zambezi National Park.

Sleep in the Sahara Desert:

Covering over 3 million square miles of northern Africa, the Sahara is said to encompass a staggering 10% of the African continent. Scientists believe that the Sahara Desert has been inhabited since 6000 B.C. The Egyptians, Phoenicians, Greeks and Europeans are just some of its former residents. Today, the population is around 4 million and consists mainly of nomads who move from place to place as a result of the harsh conditions. Over time, the wind, heat and dry weather has created a tapestry of stunning landscapes that include sand dunes, sand seas (called ergs), barren stone plateaus, gravel plains and salt flats.

Olympics and politics: how a massacre in South Africa led to Africa’s boycott of the 1976 games

As the world prepares for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games , can we maintain faith in the nonpolitical ethos of the event? The Montreal Olympics Games in 1976 stands out, among others, as a clear instance of the games being used for political ends.

In 1976 Montreal became only the second French-speaking city to host the event since Paris in 1924 and security issues were high on the agenda. Just four years earlier the Munich games had witnessed the tragedy of the execution of the Israeli delegation by the Palestinian Black September commando.

But apart from the withdrawal of Taiwan under pressure from China, geopolitical issues in 1976 seemed to focus on the cold war and its sporting metaphor: the Olympic competition between the US and the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). With just a week to go before the opening of the games, no one could have imagined the shocking event that was about to unfold at the Montreal Olympics: a landmark boycott of the event by African countries. It was to have global resonance.

As a historian and researcher , I have co-edited several books and devoted a number of works to the history of the Olympic Games . I use the example of Montreal in 1976 to explain how the event has often served as a political platform – and how it bolstered Africa’s international voice in 1976.

An African geopolitical force emerges

When it was founded in 1963, the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) – later the African Union – was composed of 32 African countries. It aimed to achieve two main goals. One was the decolonisation of the last African territories under western colonial control. The second was the overthrow of the white minority apartheid regimes in South Africa and Rhodesia (today Zimbabwe).

The composition of the International Olympic Committee had been turned upside down by the entry of newly independent African countries. The shift disrupted cold war dynamics and, under pressure from representatives of the newly independent nations and communist countries, South Africa was excluded from the Olympics from 1964. Rhodesia followed in 1972.

The same upheaval occurred at the United Nations (UN), where pressure on South Africa increased following the decolonisation of African and Asian countries in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1962, for example, the International Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination was adopted, clearly targeting South Africa. In 1968, the UN assembly requested that all states cease cultural, educational or sporting exchanges with the “racist regime of South Africa”. However, this international pressure was countered by the right of veto or abstention of certain western countries, notably the US. It had no binding force.

In 1974 and 1975, the last Portuguese colonies (Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé) became independent. From that point, the OAU’s primary political objective shifted to combating apartheid. Despite the organisation’s calls for a boycott of South Africa and the action of its members within the UN special committee on apartheid South Africa, the OAU’s concrete influence in isolating South Africa was weak, reflecting its geopolitical role on a global scale.

In 1975, the report of the UN special committee again emphasised the fight against countries that continued to maintain links with South Africa and Rhodesia, particularly sporting links.

A massive boycott

Against this backdrop, in 1976, the OAU orchestrated a request for the exclusion of New Zealand from the Montreal Olympics. The grounds were that New Zealand had authorised its 1976 rugby team to tour South Africa against an all-white home team. The threat of a boycott by African countries piled pressure on the International Olympic Committee.

One event catalysed the OAU’s reaction: the Soweto massacre in Johannesburg. On 16 June 1976, a demonstration by schoolchildren turned into a riot. Brutal police violence led to the death of 600 demonstrators and the arrest of tens of thousands, mainly black people.

From 24 June to 3 July, the OAU convened in Port Louis, Mauritius for its 27th ordinary session of the Council of Ministers. The reaction was vehement: in addition to condemning the massacre, the OAU called for armed resistance against the South African regime and supported supplying weapons to the liberation movements. One resolution targeted New Zealand, urging the International Olympic Committee to exclude the country from the 1976 games. With the Olympics set to begin in just two days, on 15 July, many African delegations were already in Montreal.

The African states’ decision disrupted the sporting movement just as complex negotiations about New Zealand’s participation were underway. The failure of these negotiations led to a boycott by 22 African countries. Two countries, loyal allies of France, refused to take part: Côte d'Ivoire and Senegal . The decision to boycott came as a shock to the sporting world. The OAU had entirely bypassed the input of African delegates to the International Olympic Committee and their National Olympic Committees. This again shifted the focus of the games from pure athletic competition to a powerful political condemnation of South Africa’s regime and those who tolerated it.

Media wise and politically, the OAU’s actions, by using the Olympics as a platform, successfully dominated the headlines. The boycott helped force the world to confront apartheid. The global press had no choice but to focus on the issue.

What happened next

The consequences of the Olympic boycott by African countries were significant. Africa asserted itself as an autonomous power in the field of international sports diplomacy. This compensated for the relative ineffectiveness of the OAU within the UN, particularly in advocating for sanctions against South Africa.

The International Olympic Committee also revealed its powerlessness and conservatism throughout the crisis. It maintained its independence by maintaining its stance, contending that rugby was not an Olympic sport and that New Zealand’s sporting policy was outside its purview. But it was powerless as the boycott was ultimately successful. Its conservative position went against a rising tide of protest against apartheid.

The OAU’s fight against complicity with apartheid had both a moral and a geopolitical dimension. Morally, apartheid represented a radical form of the old colonial domination. Geopolitically, the OAU’s “pan-African” coherence was also based on this struggle.

The boycott of the Montreal Olympics revealed the complexity of international sporting relations, which went far beyond the east-west confrontation. It was a sign of the OAU’s efforts to build a genuine African force on the world stage. The sports aside, the 1976 Olympics were indeed a global political stage.

Ernie Els wins 2nd straight PGA Tour Champions title, beating Steve Stricker in playoff in Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Ernie Els won for the second straight week on the PGA Tour Champions, winning the American Family Insurance Championship on Sunday when tournament host Steve Stricker missed a 2 1/2-foot putt on the first hole of a playoff.

“He feels bad winning like that and I feel bad giving it to him like that,” said Stricker, the winner last year in his hometown event. “But he played well.”

Els and Stricker shared the second-round lead and each shot 3-under 69 in windy conditions to finish at 12-under 204 at University Ridge. They both birdied the par-5 16th and parred the final two holes.

“You’ve got to just play proper golf and you’ve got to make some putts at the end of the day,” said Els, the 54-year-old Hall of Famer from South Africa. “I feel a lot better with my putting. Playing with Steve Stricker, you feel like you don’t putt very well.”

The Principal Charity Classic winner last week in Iowa, Els became the first player to win two straight events on the 50-and-over tour since Stricker last year in the Regions Tradition and Senior PGA Championship. Els won for the fifth time on the senior tour.

″I know I’m putting well, I’m striking it good,” Els said. “I’m just hanging in there and trying to get my chances where they come.”

Stricker has 18 Champions victories. He’s winless this year and has gone nine starts without a victory, the longest drought of his senior career.

Cameron Percy of Australia was third third at 9 under after a 67. Doug Barron (66), Stephen Ames (67) and Thomas Bjorn (69) were 8 under.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle 'planning a world tour' as next country visit revealed

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are said to be planning a "world tour" after completing a visit to Nigeria.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry travelled to the African country in mid-May to deepen their charity work on issues close to their heart, promote the Duke's Invictus Games and allow the Duchess to connect to her Nigerian heritage.

Following their trip to Nigeria, speculation started to swirl over whether this was just the first of a series of overseas visits by the two California-based royals.

The Duke of Sussex himself seemingly suggested more journeys of this kind would be planned, as he told Nigerian outlet Peoples Daily: "There's only so much one can do from home and over Zoom, so we look forward to travelling more because the work matters."

While Meghan and Harry haven't publicly shared their future plans, a source previously claimed that Ghana may be the next destination of the Sussexes.

They told the Mirror : "There is already a lot of talk and excitement in Ghana, everyone is so keen for Harry and Meghan to come and experience the great culture and warmth."

They added: "Several top names have already visited Ghana in recent years from Ed Sheeran to Naomi Campbell and One Direction's Liam Payne."

Adding to the conversation about the Sussexes' next move, TalkTV host Andre Walker claimed on his programme That Was The Woke That Was: "Harry and Meghan are planning a world tour this summer following on from the success of their trip to Nigeria."

Discussing the reasons why Meghan and Harry, who are no longer working royals and haven't represented the Crown since the spring of 2020, could be undertaking more overseas visits, political strategist Sam Armstrong told the host he believes the Duke and Duchess want to "prove a point", which is that they can "do better" than the Prince and Princess of Wales.

He continued: "What they are trying to do is show that they still got it and they can do it.

"And, of course, you can never forget that they have to do something to keep Spotify and Netflix interested, which have written a check for hundreds of millions of dollars to produce something so far haven't got much for it."

Meghan and Harry struck multi-year deals with the two streaming platforms in late 2020 and released a series of programmes for them.

Their partnership with Spotify was ended in the summer of 2023, and the Duchess has since signed a new podcast deal with Lemonada Media.
