Bigger Than Baseball

USA Prime Indiana Baseball is about the qualities that every athlete learns as they participate. Our players learn about teamwork, respect, and discipline. Furthermore, they create lasting friendships and build leadership skills. Finally, they learn how to win with humility and graciously tip their cap in defeat.

Many of us were taught these qualities by coaches and volunteers of sports organizations that were a part of growing up. We are forever grateful for their impact in our lives. The were, and often still are, our heroes.

10 high school baseball teams to watch across Southwestern Indiana in 2024

EVANSVILLE — The calendar turning to March isn't reserved for basketball. Look to the diamond.

The 2024 high school baseball season begins this week. The postseason will arrive on Memorial Day weekend before we realize it. Many of the top programs in Southern Indiana reside in our corner of the state with a propensity for multiple weekends stays in the tournament. Who might be the top contenders this spring?

Here are 10 teams, listed in alphabetical order, to watch this season in the Evansville-area.

More: 65 high school baseball players to watch in Southwestern Indiana in 2024

Barr-Reeve Vikings

The Vikings advanced to the Class 1A state championship last year. A return trip isn't out of the question with nearly the entire starting lineup intact.

To advance deep in the tournament, you need multiple quality pitchers. Seth Wagler and Jacob Pauw fit the description after a combined 15-2 record last season; Wagler struck out 10 in the state championship loss to Lafayette Central Catholic. The lineup has potential high-impact hitters at multiple spots. The Vikings are one of the early favorites to advance from the south.

Castle Knights

Pencil the Knights down for a bunch of wins and competing for the SIAC and sectional titles.

It feels straightforward with this program, and the pieces are there again. Of course, the major topic is life without ace Cameron Tilly, who is now in the Southeastern Conference . There is still a Division I arm to lead the staff (Will Coleman, Missouri) and a Division I outfielder (Noah Drake, Indiana) to aid the lineup. The underclassmen thrown into the fire last year are also a year older and a year better.

Central Bears

The Bears would be the wildcard pick among contenders in the SIAC.

Following an 18-win season in year one for Robbie Frank, Central returns enough talent at key spots to remain squarely in the mix. Marshall recruit Josh Ferguson gives the Bears an ace. The outfield has a pair of all-conference caliber players in JJ Clark and Jaxon Henke. In total, Central has six returning starters and its best on a single night will be tough.

Forest Park Rangers

The Rangers' ceiling puts them among the top teams in Class 2A. Do they reach that potential?

A 22-win season a year ago ended quickly and surprisingly in the opening game of the sectional. There are spots to fill now including the No. 1 spot in the rotation , but Forest Park's strengths are also clear. Western Kentucky recruit Reid Howard has All-State potential in the infield. There is also ample depth on the mound with Joel Bueltel and Jaxon Lueken, plus an experienced senior class. A lot of eyes on Forest Park this year.

Jasper Wildcats

Keep it simple, folks. Never count out this program and coach Terry Gobert.

The reasoning this year is straightforward. The Wildcats will be tough when Andrew Noblitt is on the mound. Will Wallace and Kai Kunz provide impact bats and pitching depth. There will be upperclassmen at nearly every other position. The SIAC is stacked at the top, but every contender knows better than to underestimate Jasper. The Wildcats rarely beat themselves.

Memorial Tigers

Memorial has not won the SIAC title in baseball since 2018. Might this be the year?

The high-impact players are numerous, beginning with three Division I recruits in Matthew Fisher (Indiana), Thomas Lynch (Purdue) and Simon Schulz (Evansville). The former proved in the postseason last year how tough the Tigers will be when he is pitching. A couple of things to settle before May: who is their No. 2 on the mound? does the lineup find more consistency?

North Huskies

On paper, this might be the team to beat in the SIAC. The key will be what the Huskies get from the rotation.

The offense doesn't have the pop of recent years but is full of speed, contact and experience. The prime example is Indiana recruit Cole Decker in the leadoff spot. As with most years, North's success relies on the mound. There are known quantities with seniors Bryce Minton and Chris Cranick. The wildcard is 6-10 junior Kellen English. The Indiana commit raises the Huskies' ceiling by tapping into his potential.

North Posey Vikings

If you want to see offense, take a trip to Poseyville this spring.

The Vikings' top four hitters are back from a 19-win campaign that ended in the sectional championship game. Easton Luigs is on the shortlist for top returners in the PAC. Throw in two-way player Ethan Mansfield, plus Colby Angel and Logan Simmons. North Posey should play a role in deciding the conference and sectional title if it finds pitching depth or top-to-bottom production in the lineup.

Princeton Tigers

Need wildcard potential in the PAC? Don't overlook the Tigers.

A young team won 18 games last season and only two contributors graduated. Jarrett Kinder and Ryne Wilhite were All-PAC infielders a year ago. The latter was also Princeton's top arm with a 1.11 earned run average in 50 innings. The Tigers need the rest of the roster, notably a large junior class, to make a leap. There is intrigue here though.

Southridge Raiders

Last year showed the staying power of this program.

Two years removed from winning the state championship , the Raiders only just won the outright PAC title before beating county rival Jasper in the sectional. Six starters are back including the top three hitters. A lone concern is finding a true ace. There is a candidate in Evan McClain plus the return of all-conference infielders Hudson Allen and Blake Taylor. It wouldn't be a shock to see Gene Mattingly have Southridge competing for titles again.

Honorable mention: Tecumseh, Harrison, South Knox

How South Bend Saint Joseph won a marathon baseball game over Mishawaka Friday

indiana travel baseball tryouts 2024

MISHAWAKA — Twenty-six runs. Twenty-five hits. Eight innings. Three hours.

That's what the South Bend Saint Joseph and Mishawaka baseball teams combined for Friday.

And in a game that went so long, it was only fitting that what felt like the longest play of the contest decided it.

More: Top high school baseball players to watch for from the South Bend area in 2024

With two outs in the top of the eighth inning, Saint Joseph senior Jayce Lee hit a fly ball so high up that it seemed to defy the law of physics for a second. It went so far in the air, in fact, that Mishawaka shortstop Shawn Nowacki lost track of it at the last second, with the ball hitting the ground and allowing two Huskies players to score. The two runners — Ben Van Fleit and Joe Washburn — started on first and second base, respectively, when Lee first made contact. By the time the ball landed, Washburn had crossed home plate and Van Fleit was nearly to third base.

Those ended up being the final two tallies in an eventful 14-12 win for Saint Joseph over the Cavemen Friday at Ward Baker Park.

“There’s no one else I’d want up to bat in that situation,” Saint Joseph coach John Smolinski said. “He just missed it, to be honest, but he hit it so high that I knew we had a chance it was going to fall. It’s a tough situation there for that shortstop. One play doesn’t define that game for them.”

Lee also factored into the run that tied the game at 12 in the seventh inning. After leading off the frame with a double, the Notre Dame commit went to steal third base, with the ensuing throw getting by the Cavemen third basemen and into leftfield. This allowed Lee to trot home easily.

The bottom of the seventh saw Mishawaka senior Brayden Freitag get hit by a pitch to start the inning. Although the next two Cavemen hitters would record outs, Freitag advanced to third base in the process. With the heart of the Mishawaka order up, Smolinski decided to intentionally walk Cooper Pritchett and Will Hartzke to load the bases.

The strategy worked out, as Huskies senior Brady O’Connell was able to get Mishawaka sophomore Kamden Putz to lineout to Saint Joe second baseman Brady Langager, ending the threat and forcing extras.

“He smoked that ball; we just happened to have a guy right there,” Smolinski said.

O’Connell wound up recording the win, pitching the final 3 1/3rd innings.

Back and forth game all night

After Saint Joseph (5-1) junior Owen Futa had a two-RBI double in the top of the first, Mishawaka (2-2) countered with a two-RBI triple from Hartzke in the bottom half of the frame.

The Cavemen went ahead, 3-2, in the second inning after a Huskie error allowed junior Izaiah Bute to score. Saint Joseph quickly wrestled the lead back by scoring two runs in the third and one more in the fourth.

More: Indianapolis Colts select South Bend Riley student to represent team at NFL Draft

Mishawaka tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when junior Shawn Nowacki ripped a triple to center, scoring Bute. Three pitches later, Nowacki scored on a wild pitch.

The fifth inning is where things officially became wild, as both teams scored six runs in a frame that went more than 40 minutes. A two-RBI double from Brady Langager, RBI single from Washburn and three-RBI double from Brett Mason provided the Huskies’ runs in the inning. Mason finished with a game-high four RBI in total.

The Cavemen countered by scoring its first two runs off Saint Joseph errors. Tyler Thomas’s sacrifice fly made it 11-8, a Nowacki triple two batters later cut the deficit to one and a DeBroka triple the ensuing at-bat tied it up at 11.

Nowacki wound up finishing 4-for-5 with three RBI.

“Shawn is having a fantastic season to start,” Mishawaka coach John Huemmer said. “He’s a quality ball player. He’s going to be a hidden gem for a college team if somebody decides to get him.”

In a game with explosive offense all night, it looked like a bunt was going to be the difference for Mishawaka. Bute laid down a perfect suicide squeeze in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Hartzke. It wouldn’t hold up as the winning run, though, due to the efforts of Lee and the rest of his Saint Joseph teammates.

What do you learn from a game like Friday?

Smolinski came away impressed with his team’s resolve.

“We just don’t give up,” Smolinski said. “It’s not always the guy you expect to do it, too. Sometimes, it’s a person you maybe don’t expect to step up, like Brady O’Connell. The kid just competes, and that’s what I learned about our guys: we just compete.”

Huemmer knows the Cavemen will have to clean up some mistakes if they want to win games like this in the future. “We just have to do the little things,”

Huemmer said. “There were a couple things that we didn’t do well that kind of cost us. We had our opportunities to win, and I’m super proud of my boys for not giving up when we went down six runs. Saint Joseph is a pretty dang good team.”

2024 National High School Invitational Preview

CARY, N.C. – The 2024 calendar year marks the 11 th edition of the National High School Invitational presented by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance and the Town of Cary. Play begins on Wednesday, April 10, at the National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina, and will conclude with the crowning of a champion on Saturday, April 13.

Once again, this year’s field is loaded with talent, featuring two past NHSI champions, four 2023 state champions, 144 college commits, and 26 USA Baseball alums. Read up about this year’s field.

Best in the State

Four teams in this year’s NHSI field are coming off state championship seasons in 2023, as Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.), Casteel (Queen Creek, Ariz.), Farragut (Farragut, Tenn.), and St. John’s Country Day (Orange Park, Fla.) all captured titles at their respective class levels.

Former Champs Return to Cary

This year’s field boasts two former champions, defending champion Huntington Beach (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and three-time winner Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.). Between the two schools, the Oilers and Lancers have won five of the last six editions of the event. In addition to last year’s title, Huntington Beach won its first trophy in 2016 while Orange Lutheran won the event in 2017, 2018, and 2019. The 2024 event will mark the seventh time both teams have participated in the NHSI, which is the most appearances of any team in the tournament.

Old and New Foes

Nine schools have played in at least one past edition of the NHSI, while seven schools will make their NHSI debuts on April 10. Along with Huntington Beach and Orange Lutheran, Bishop Gorman, Farragut, Hagerty (Oviedo, Fla.), Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, Calif.), Puyallup (Puyallup, Wash.), St. Johns Country Day, and Trinity Christian (Jacksonville, Fla.) are all past participants.

Apex Friendship (Apex, N.C.), Casteel, Chaparral (Scottsdale, Ariz.), Corona (Corona, Calif.), Key West (Key West, Fla.), St. John’s College (Washington, D.C.), and Wesleyan Christian (High Point, N.C.), will join the 16-team field for the first time.

St. John’s College’s upcoming debut will mark the first time that the District of Columbia has been represented in the NHSI.

Back For More

Hagerty senior Adam Ciccone and Huntington Beach junior Tyler Bellerose were named to last year’s NHSI All-Tournament Team and are back for more in 2024. Both had stellar performances across the week at the plate or on the mound last year, and will just a few of the many players to keep an eye on during the event.

Ciccone turned in a .667 batting average with eight hits, nine total bases, two runs, and two RBIs in four games. Bellerose tossed nine innings and compiled a 1.00 ERA while fanning eight batters across two appearances. In the championship game last year, he surrendered one earned run in six innings en route to being tabbed the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Best of the Best

The NHSI is known for bringing the nation’s best high school talent to Cary, North Carolina. Seven teams in this year’s field were featured MaxPreps’ Preseason Top 25 Poll:

  • No. 5 Corona
  • No. 11 Orange Lutheran
  • No. 12 Bishop Gorman
  • No. 13 Harvard-Westlake
  • No. 14 Farragut
  • No. 16 Huntington Beach
  • No. 20 Chaparral

Headed to the Next Level

One-hundred and forty-four players participating in the 2024 NHSI are committed to play college baseball, which averages out to nearly nine players per team. Seventy-one of those players are committed to play in a Power Five conference. Farragut leads all teams in the field with 17 college commits, while Orange Lutheran and St. John’s College each have 14 players committed to play in college.

The NHSI is not only guaranteed to showcase the top future collegiate talent, but has also had 180 past participants selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. Nine picks in the 2023 MLB Draft competed in last year’s event, including Noble Meyer (10), Ralphy Velazquez (23), and Adrian Santana (31) who were selected in the first round.

Repping the Red, White, and Blue

This year’s NHSI field features 18 players and nine coaches who have been a part of a past national team, which is a combined 27 USA Baseball alums. Orange Lutheran leads the way with seven alums, while Corona has five, Harvard-Westlake has three, Bishop Gorman, Casteel, and Puyallup each have two, and Chaparral, Hagerty, Huntington Beach, Key West, St. John’s College, and Trinity Christian have one apiece.

Reunited in Cary

The NHSI will serve as a reunion for several past Team USA players and coaches. Multiple members from 12 past national teams, including six teams which won gold in their respective international competition, are participating in this year’s NHSI:
