Slip Trip and Fall Prevention

Operating a businesses can create a multitude of slip trip and fall hazards, whether it be from spilled liquids, high customer traffic or other means in office space, sidewalks, kitchens, manufacturing area, dining areas and/or storage rooms. Everyone can all play a part to prevent slip trip and fall hazards from causing injuries to anyone.

Do Your Part To Support Slip Trip and Fall Prevention

A wet floor is only one of the many causes that accounts for thousands of workplace and work-related injuries every year, which is why it is important to spot unsafe conditions that could lead to slip trip and fall incidents, and employees should do what they can to prevent them.

To avoid slips trip and fall injuries, employees should be on the lookout for debris on the floor, such as the following:

Good Housekeeping Counts In the Fight Against Slip Trip and Fall Injuries

Even small quantities of debris are enough to make someone slip trip and fall. In addition to being a slip trip and fall hazard, continually wet surfaces promote the growth of mould, fungi and bacteria that can cause infections. Wet floor signs must be placed around a spill immediately after the incident. Employees need to make sure messes on the floor are cleaned up and the floor is dried as soon as possible to avoid any slip trip and fall from occurring.

At the beginning and end of a shift or work day, employees need to make sure the workplace is clean and free of any slip trip and fall hazards. If there is an object that presents a hazard that they cannot move or clean up on their own, they should alert a manager.

Employees should beware of potential slip trip and fall hazards. Trash, chairs, signs, ice or any object in areas designed for pedestrian traffic invite falls. Extension cords, food or mail carts, displays and other items in the open all present slip trip and fall hazards. A bunched up mat or rug at the entrance to a business that is intended to prevent slip trip and fall incidents can actually be the cause of slip trip and fall injuries if not monitored correctly.

Practice Slip Trip and Fall Prevention

Employees and customers should walk in designated areas only. Short cuts through storage, manufacturing or cooking areas can cause slip trip and fall accidents. Horseplay and inattention leaves employees and customers vulnerable to unsafe conditions.

Employees using the correct footwear is important in every workplace. Floors can become wet from spilled liquids, steam and other sources of heat from equipment, so employees should use shoes with a good amount of tread and employers install non-slip mats whenever possible to avoid a slip trip and fall accidents.

When using equipment, employees need to be sure it is properly maintained according to the manufacturer’s specifications. Standing and working areas should be clean and free from spills and debris and employees should be encouraged and even rewarded for reporting unsafe areas that could cause slip trip and falls injuries. Also if customers or employees believe their workplace is unsafe they can always review regulations and legislation and or contact related government departments .

Sample slip, trip and fall prevention program

This sample program is intended to provide general information to consider in developing a slip, trip and fall prevention program. This sample program may or may not represent all components of a slip, trip and fall safety program needed by your unique operations or comply with all legal requirements and/or standards. You are responsible for tailoring the program to address the specific needs of your organization.

1. Introduction

Nationally, falls are the second leading cause of accidental death and a major cause of debilitating injuries. This program is designed to reduce exposure to both visitor and employee slip, trip and fall accidents.

2. Sample policy statement

The most effective safety program policy statements reflect your unique operations and environment. Here is a sample:

“It is the policy of ABC, Inc. to provide our employees and customers safe and healthful conditions in which they can conduct business. We will strive to maintain a facility that is free from identified slip, trip and fall hazards. We have implemented a prevention program that considers the behaviors of people, our equipment, our work methods, processes and finally the environment to reduce and prevent slip, trip and fall accidents. We expect all employees to cooperate in this very important initiative to ensure its success.”

3. Training

Management believes that employee involvement in the site’s safety and health program can only be successful when everyone on the site receives sufficient training to understand what their safety responsibilities and opportunities are, and how to fulfill them. Therefore, training is a high priority to help ensure a safe workplace.

All employees will receive awareness training during orientation. Employees who conduct formal workplace inspections will be trained on their responsibilities and on how to perform them.

4. Housekeeping standards

Housekeeping plays such a critical role in the success of our slip, trip and fall prevention program that all employees must make housekeeping their top priority. The following are minimum accepted guidelines:

 • Work areas are to be kept clean throughout your shift and a thorough review and cleaning must be completed prior to leaving your shift.
 • Walkways will be kept clear of electric cords, hoses or any other potential hazards. If walkways cannot be kept clear then they need to be blocked off until the task is completed.
 • Spill areas must be secured until the spill is removed.
 • Stock or finished goods will not be stored on stairs, in walkways or in such a manner that would be a hazard to anyone walking through.

5. Seasonal issues

The changing seasons create unique weather-related conditions for which the following procedures have been developed:

 • All building entrances will be cleaned of snow and ice, and will be treated with salt, one hour prior to the opening of business.
 • Exterior walkways will be inspected hourly and treated as needed.
 • Use the form “Snow and Ice Control Record” found in Appendix E to document the work.
 • Parking lots will be inspected daily. Any snow or ice that has accumulated between cars will need to be removed.
 • During the fall, daily inspections will be made and action taken as needed to ensure walkways are cleared of leaves.

6. Corrective maintenance procedure

When a hazard has been identified through inspection or our hazard reporting program, maintenance must be notified so that the problem can be corrected. The following is the procedure to accomplish this task:

 • Any problem needs to be communicated to the manager immediately.
 • The maintenance manager will inspect the problem and communicate the best action to take.
 • If it can’t be corrected immediately, a temporary control will be put in place to prevent anyone from being injured.

7. Workplace inspection policy and procedure

Our goal is to ensure a safe, clean and hazard free environment for employees and customers. Workplace inspections will be conducted to identify and correct potential safety and health hazards.

Use our “Walking and Working Surfaces — Self Inspection Checklist” found in Appendix C to document the inspection.

 • Inspections will be carried out by supervisors of their functional areas. The manager will inspect common areas and all outside areas including the parking lot.
 • Any deficiencies or hazards must be acted upon to remove the hazard, warn of it or close off the area in question.

Three types of inspections are used to assess our facility. Each type of inspection has its own purpose.

Annual inspections

Once a year an inspection team made up of representatives of the organization will do a wall-to-wall walk through inspection of the entire worksite. They will use the “Walking and Working Surfaces — Self Inspection Checklist” found in Appendix C. The results of this inspection will be used to:

 • Eliminate or control obvious hazards.
 • Target specific work areas for more intensive investigation.
 • Assist in revising the checklists used during periodic safety inspections.
 • Evaluate the effectiveness of our slip, trip and fall prevention program.

Change of operations surveys

Changes include new equipment, changes to production processes or a change to the building structure or premises. Examine the changed conditions and make recommendations to eliminate or control any hazards that were or may be created as a result of the change. This needs to be comple ted during the design stage of any proposed changes to ensure recommendations are incorporated into the changes. The “Walking and Working Surfaces— Self Inspection Checklist” found in Appendix C can be used as a guide for this survey.

Periodic safety inspections

Supervisors or their appointees will inspect their work areas for hazards using the “Walking Surfaces Periodic Inspection Checklist.” The results of the periodic inspection and any action taken will be documented.

8. Responsibilities

It’s important that all employees understand their responsibilities. The following are some examples that can be tailored to fit your organization’s management structure.

Management responsibilities

 • Ensure that sufficient employee time, supervisor support and funds are budgeted for safety equipment, training and to carry out the safety program.
 • Evaluate supervisors each year to make sure they are carrying out their responsibilities as described in this program.
 • Ensure that incidents are fully investigated and corrective action taken to prevent the hazardous conditions from developing again.
 • Set a good example by following established safety rules and attending required training.

Supervisor responsibilities

 • Supervisors must assure this program is adhered to and that all employees follow program policies and procedures.
 • Ensure that each employee you supervise has received an initial orientation before beginning work.
 • Observe the employees as they work. Promptly correct any unsafe behavior.
 • Do a daily walk-around safety-check of the work area and promptly correct any hazards you find.
 • Set a good example for employees by following safety rules and attending required training.
 • Investigate all incidents in your area and report your findings to management.
 • Talk to management about changes to work practices or equipment that will improve employee safety.

Employee Responsibilities

 • Clean up spills and pick up debris to help ensure others are not injured on company property
 • Report hazards to supervisors or managers promptly for corrective action.
 • Follow safety rules, safety standards and training you receive as described in this program
 • Report all injuries and near miss incidents to your supervisor promptly regardless of how serious.
 • Make suggestions to your supervisor or management about changes you believe will improve employee safety.

Maintenance/engineering

 • Must purchase waxes with non-skid characteristic and do not decrease the coefficient of friction of floor surfaces.
 • Review floor cleaner data sheets to assure that no slippery floors are created.
 • Must integrate the stair design requirements, uniformity of risers, and tread principles, ramp requirements and slope considerations into building design, and building modifications as appropriate.

Facility safety

 • Will inspect buildings for hazards and inform maintenance and/or housekeeping of hazards that are identified.
 • Will supply deicer in buckets along with scoops at building entrances during inclement weather.
 • Check floor surfaces as requested for slip or trip hazards, determine any needed corrective action and notify appropriate party to correct the problem.

Housekeeping

 • Must use barricades when the floor they are working on is slippery or presents a tripping hazard. Barricades will be removed as soon as the hazard is corrected.
 • Place non-skid mats at building entrances during inclement weather. Inspect mats periodically or as needed to ensure they are properly controlling the hazard.

9. Safety rules

The following basic safety rules have been established to control slip, trip and fall accidents. These rules are in addition to safety rules that must be followed when doing particular jobs or operating certain equipment. Failure to comply with these rules will result in disciplinary action.

 • Always take the proper safety precautions before doing a job. If a job is unsafe, report it to your supervisor. We will find a safer way to do that job.
 • Horseplay, running and fighting are prohibited.
 • Clean up spills immediately. Replace all tools and supplies after use.
 • Keep tools or materials out of designated walkways.
 • Protect all spill areas. If needed, get someone to help clean up the spill or guard the spill while you get the necessary equipment to clean the spill.
 • If you see a slip or trip hazard do something about it. It’s the responsibility of everyone to identify and control hazards.
 • Make sure scraps don’t accumulate where they will become a hazard. Good housekeeping helps prevent injuries.

Proper footwear is an important component of our slip, trip and fall prevention program. Footwear needs to be appropriate for the task. In many of the work areas other than our offices, high heeled shoes and leather soled shoes are considered unsafe and must be avoided. It is the responsibility of each employee to obtain and maintain slip resistant footwear in a serviceable condition. Supervisors will ensure that employees are wearing appropriate slip resistant footwear at all times in the workplace.

Mats and Runners

Our goal is to maintain all floor surfaces in a slip resistant condition. In those work areas or situations where this isn’t feasible, mats or runners will be used to provide slip resistance. It is everyone’s responsibility to monitor mats and runners to ensure they continue to provide proper slip resistance and have not become a tripping hazard.

Where mats have been used to control wet areas, either entry ways to the building or wet processes, the following conditions require immediate action:

 • If pedestrian traffic leaves wet foot prints when stepping off the mat, the mat needs to be replaced with a dry one or an additional mat needs to be placed at the end of the first mat.
 • If the mat has become wrinkled or bunched up it needs to be reset so it is flat and doesn’t present a tripping hazard.

10. Accident investigation procedure

All accidents will be investigated and analyzed to identify the root cause. The following steps will be taken when an accident occurs.

 • Helping the injured person will be the primary concern immediately following an accident. Never leave the person alone. If assistance is needed send someone else or have someone stay with the person while you get help.
 • If the injured party is not an employee, do not admit liability or fault for the accident. If they ask if we are going to pay for their medical costs simply state that someone from The Hanover Insurance Group will be in touch with them.
 • Protect the accident scene to prevent anyone else from getting hurt and to preserve the accident scene in an “as is” condition to help ensure an accurate investigation.
 • Contact the supervisor of the area where the accident occurred so they can begin the collection of data and accident analysis.
 • The information will be collected and the analysis completed using our “Accident Investigation Report.”
 • Photos need to be taken of the general area, any defective conditions and anything else that could be considered as a contributing factor of the accident.
 • Once the root cause is determined, corrective action will be initiated immediately following standard procedure.

What’s the best travel insurance for your fall trip? It depends.

trip and fall insurance

Finding the best travel insurance has never been easy, but if you’re planning a trip for this year, it’s never been this confusing.

Just ask Gail Arnoff, who contacted me recently about insurance for a trip to Israel.

“I don’t know how to get insurance which will cover me if I get covid,” she says. “Of course, my insurance will cover me for other conditions, but not specifically for covid. How do I find the needed insurance for me and my husband?”

Arnoff, an English professor from Shaker Heights, Ohio, says it appeared as if the travel insurance companies didn’t have time to articulate their coronavirus policies. As a result, she didn’t know what to buy.

Travel insurance companies have been adjusting their policies in the past few months to meet the demands of both cautious travelers and underwriters who are wary of losing their shirts on pandemic claims. Experts say there are a few essential coverages you need for your upcoming trips — and some that you can skip. Their advice can inform any decision you make about the best travel insurance for your fall and winter travels.

There’s a growing awareness of travel insurance. Sales of travel protection have roughly doubled since the pandemic started, following two decades of steady growth. Current and emerging coronavirus variants are putting it front and center this fall, too.

“Travelers are getting more informed about travel insurance,” says Karisa Cernera, senior manager of travel services for Redpoint Travel Protection , which sells Ripcord, Cavalry and Harbor travel insurance. “They see it as a critical tool, especially when it comes to covid-19-related losses.”

But the coronavirus isn’t the only hazard that can derail your upcoming trip, says Stan Sandberg, co-founder of TravelInsurance.com .

“Given the forecast of an overly active Atlantic hurricane season, which runs through the end of November, savvy travelers should seek out plans that provide hurricane coverage, including for [National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration] hurricane warnings,” he says. “Also, with airports and airlines still getting back up to speed, flight delays and delayed or lost baggage can almost be expected.”

Many insurance underwriters have modified their policies to cover an event such as testing positive for the coronavirus while traveling and being required to isolate. For example, Travelex recently announced that it would treat the coronavirus like any other illness. This means that if you, a traveling companion, family member or business partner become ill before or during your trip, you may be eligible for trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical or medical evacuation compensation. Travelex also increased the trip delay coverage limit from $750 to $2,000 on its popular Travel Select policy.

Confused? There’s an easy solution: a “cancel for any reason” travel insurance policy, which allows you to cancel your vacation and receive a partial refund of your nonrefundable prepaid expenses. You can also buy an extra medical option to handle any potential coronavirus issue.

Sasha Gainullin, chief executive of the travel insurance company Battleface , says his company has been selling more cancel-for-any-reason policies since the pandemic.

“I also recommend policies that include coverage for covid-19-related expenses,” he adds. “That’s essential, since many countries are requiring it for entry.”

But there’s a downside: Cancel-for-any-reason insurance is expensive. A traditional travel insurance policy, which covers named perils, such as evacuations and lost luggage, is between 7 and 9 percent of the cost of your trip. This type of policy will set you back between 10 and 12 percent, and sometimes more.

Also, since the pandemic, many insurance companies have quietly reduced the payout on a cancel-for-any-reason policy, from 75 percent to 50 percent. You can still find 75 percent payout policies, but you have to look for them. And fortunately, most insurance companies include medical coverage in their plans, although significant restrictions apply.

The best trip cancellation travel insurance policy for you might not be the most expensive one, says Steve Dasseos, founder of TripInsuranceStore.com . For example, a regular policy will cover trip cancellation, interruption, trip delays, lost luggage, medical emergencies and evacuations. Not one of his policies excludes pandemics or epidemics.

“Many people have been overpaying for travel insurance plans, because whoever sold the policy to them failed to tell them that they didn’t need cancel-for-any-reason coverage,” he says.

What kind of travel insurance is essential? Coronavirus coverage tops the list, according to Daniel Durazo, director of marketing and communications at Allianz Partners USA . “Because the delta variant continues to create uncertainty about the path of the covid-19 pandemic, it’s important to protect yourself with a plan that includes coverage for medical emergencies and emergency medical transportation,” he says.

But which one is right for you? I put that question to Maria Diego, owner of Diego Travel , a Florida-based travel agency. She had just finished sending four travel insurance policy options to a client. Diego says you can find travel insurance online, either through a travel insurance site or directly through a travel insurance company. If you don’t hire a travel agency, make sure you read every policy carefully.

She sticks to three insurance companies: Allianz, Travel Guard and Travelex. “They’re my three main go-tos for travel insurance,” she says, “but each company offers different levels of coverage.”

Now comes the hard part: matching your insurance needs to one of the policies you’re considering.

“There is no one size fits all,” she says.

She’s right. Even if you work with a travel agent — and this is worth repeating — you need to take the time to pore over the boring fine print on each policy.

“Each insurer is different, and each plan may offer different coverages, so it’s important to read the plan documents to understand what is and isn’t covered,” says Tim Dodge, vice president of marketing for Arch Insurance .

Other than coronavirus coverage, there’s one thing your policy must have, experts say. “Look for policies that include coverage for the financial default of a travel supplier,” says John Cook, president of QuoteWright.com . “Risk has increased because of the financial stress caused by the effect of covid-19 on travel companies.”

And one piece of expert advice: Don’t wait too long to buy insurance for your fall trip. You should make your purchase within 14 to 21 days of your first expenditure, depending on the carrier. “This provides coverage for financial default and the preexisting medical waiver,” says Laura Heidt, the insurance desk manager for Brownell Travel in Birmingham, Ala.

After an extensive search, Arnoff, the English professor from Ohio, found a policy that specifically offered coronavirus coverage for $370 per person. Her trip to Israel, taken in midsummer, before the delta variant surge, went off without a hitch, although she had to take multiple coronavirus tests to get into the country.

“We were totally stressed out,” she says. “But at least we had insurance.”

Trip and Fall Cases Payouts: Understanding Compensation and Legal Aspects

trip and fall insurance

Trip and fall accidents can result in injuries and financial hardships for victims. If you've experienced a trip and fall incident due to someone else's negligence, you may be entitled to compensation for your damages. This article explores the differences between slip and fall and trip and fall accidents, the types of compensation available in trip and fall cases, estimating settlement values, the impact of fault, and the role of health insurance in covering medical expenses.

1) What is the Difference Between a Slip and Fall and a Trip and Fall?

While slip and fall and trip and fall accidents both involve falling on a walking surface, they occur under different circumstances. In a slip and fall, the person's foot loses traction on a slippery surface, causing them to fall. In contrast, a trip and fall happen when an obstacle or uneven surface causes the person to stumble and lose balance.

2) What Types of Compensation Can You Get in a Trip and Fall Case?

In a trip and fall case, you may be eligible for various types of compensation, including:

a) Medical Expenses: Coverage for all medical costs related to your injuries, including doctor visits, hospitalization, medications, and rehabilitation.

b) Lost Wages: Compensation for income lost due to missed work during recovery, as well as potential future lost earnings if your injuries lead to long-term disability.

c) Pain and Suffering: Damages for the physical pain, emotional distress, and reduced quality of life resulting from the accident.

d) Property Damage: If the fall caused damage to personal belongings, such as a cellphone or glasses, you may be compensated for the repair or replacement costs.

3) How to Estimate the Settlement Value of a Trip and Fall Case

Estimating the settlement value of a trip and fall case involves considering several factors, such as:

a) The Severity of Injuries: The extent of your injuries and their impact on your life and ability to work will play a significant role in determining the settlement amount.

b) Medical Expenses: The total medical expenses incurred, including ongoing or future medical treatments, are crucial in calculating the settlement.

c) Lost Wages: The amount of income lost due to missed work and potential future lost earning capacity will also be factored into the settlement.

d) Comparative Fault: If your actions contributed to the accident, your compensation may be reduced based on your percentage of fault.

4) How Does Your Fault Affect a Trip and Fall Case?

In states with comparative negligence laws (like in California), your compensation in a trip and fall case may be reduced if you are found partially at fault for the accident. For example, if the jury determines you were 20% at fault for the fall, your compensation will be reduced by that percentage.

5) Will Your Health Insurance Pay Your Bills If You Trip and Fall?

Yes, your health insurance should cover your medical bills if you trip and fall, just like any other accident or injury. Regardless of who is at fault for the fall, your health insurance should help pay for your medical expenses. However, if you receive compensation through a settlement or lawsuit, your health insurance will likely seek reimbursement for the medical expenses they covered.

For instance, if you receive treatment from Kaiser related to your trip and fall, Rawlings (their current service provider) will likely send you a notice that Kaiser is entitled to reimbursement if you recover settlement proceeds from your claim or lawsuit.

Conclusion:

Trip and fall accidents can lead to serious injuries and financial burdens. In a trip and fall case, you may be entitled to various types of compensation, including medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and property damage. To estimate the settlement value, consider the severity of your injuries, medical expenses, and the impact of any comparative fault. Additionally, remember that your health insurance should cover your medical bills, but they may seek reimbursement if you receive compensation through a settlement or lawsuit. Consult with a personal injury attorney to understand your rights, build a strong case, and pursue fair compensation for your trip and fall injuries.

This article is not legal advice and does not create an attorney-client relationship. Each case is different and it is recommended that you consult a licensed attorney in your area if you have been injured or have a potential personal injury case.

How to Sue for Trip and Fall Injury

(This may not be the same place you live)

What Is a Trip and Fall Injury?

Trip-and-fall lawsuits are associated with a trip and a subsequent fall to the ground, which differs slightly from a slip and fall, or a step and fall . This will be further discussed below. A trip occurs when the plaintiff is walking, and their toe catches on an object unexpectedly and unreasonably protruding from the ground. A trip may also occur when the ground has an unexpected pit or pothole.

An example of this would be how plaintiffs can trip over an illegal curb-cut made by a property owner, in order to create a driveway. The curb-cut may violate city codes and ordinances by being:

 • In an unusual place; and/or
 • Not flush with the adjacent street.

The inevitable result of this is a trip-and-fall incident.

A trip and fall accident happens when a foreign object, such as a broom, is in the walking area. A trip and fall may also happen when there is an uneven walking surface, or a change in a walking surface, such as a sidewalk. These accidents can also occur if there is a lack of sufficient lighting in an area.

Depending on the circumstances of each accident, a lawsuit may result. An example of this would be how if the person responsible for keeping the area clear fails to do so, they may be held liable under a premises liability theory .

As previously mentioned, a trip and fall accident differs slightly from a slip and fall accident. An accident in which a person slips and is injured due to a slippery floor or object is known as a “slip and fall” incident . Some common places for an indoor slip and fall accident to occur are:

 • Staircases or ramps;
 • Elevators; and
 • Floors in places in which liquids or grease may be present, such as a restaurant or grocery store.

Step and fall accidents can cause a variety of injuries, from lesions to twisted ankles or knees from stepping awkwardly on the object. Similarly, a “stump and fall” accident occurs when there is a crack in a walking surface or some sort of object. The individual stumbles over the object or defect prior to falling.

Who Is Responsible for Trip and Fall Injuries?

How can i bring a trip and fall lawsuit, what kind of damages can a trip and fall incur, do i need a lawyer for my trip and fall.

Who can be held responsible for trip and fall injuries depends on where the accident occurred. Municipalities are generally responsible for maintaining sidewalks and streets in a reasonably safe condition.

A pedestrian may trip over rebar, or a metal stake that is protruding dangerously out of the sidewalk. If the rest of the sidewalk is in reasonable condition, the pedestrian will likely believe that there is no protruding rebar to be aware of. As the pedestrian may be reasonable in this belief, and thus does not need to constantly scan the ground for dangers, the municipality may be held liable for resulting trip and fall injuries.

Another example would be how a person who is descending into an underground garage may suddenly trip on an unexpected hazard where:

 • Lighting is too dim;
 • The descent is too steep to be considered safe;
 • An intermediate landing is lacking or missing; and
 • Handrails are lacking or missing.

Because there are certain safety standards that must be met, the garage’s builder or owner may be held liable for resulting trip and fall injuries.

An example of when store owners may be held liable would be when a rollerblader trips while riding a ramp that is in violation of building codes, or if an employee trips on stairs that are in violation of building codes.

Trip and fall claims are a specific type of personal injury lawsuits, and as such are based on the concept of negligence . This legal theory asserts that the person or organization responsible for the injury was careless, and failed to take the proper actions which would have prevented the injury. The theory of negligence will be further discussed later on.

If a person is injured because of a trip and fall incident, they may be able to sue the property owner. In order to do so, they must show some type of legal relationship with the person who is legally in charge of the property. Additionally, they may be required to prove that the person in charge had a legal duty to protect or warn against dangers. As previously mentioned, other parties may be held liable for the trip and fall incident, such as a municipality.

Property owners are required to provide reasonable care and maintenance of their property, in order to ensure that it is safe from dangerous conditions. What specifically that duty entails may change depending on how another person enters the property. This is referred to as premises liability , as previously discussed.

The laws associated with people entering a property, and how they are categorized, may vary by state. As such, it is important for a property owner to review the local laws in their state in order to determine their role and how to adhere to state laws.

Additionally, a property owner is required to inspect the property, and adequately repair any unsafe conditions or provide a warning for the unsafe condition. Failure to do so could result in the property owner being held liable for injuries resulting from a dangerous condition on their property, even if they were not aware the condition existed.

In order for a person to bring a claim for injuries suffered from slipping or tripping on another’s property, they must prove at least one of the following:

 • The owner of the premises, or their employee, caused the premises to be unsafe;
 • The owner of the premises, or their employee, knew of the unsafe condition and failed to take measures to remedy the condition; or
 • The owner of the premises, or their employee, should have been aware of the unsafe condition on the premises.

A property owner is considered to be negligent if they do not exercise reasonable care in keeping their premises in a safe condition. It is important that the plaintiff demonstrates that they were not careless in failing to avoid the injury. If the plaintiff somehow contributed to their own injury, their damages may be reduced pursuant to contributory negligence laws or other legal restrictions.

An example of this would be if a person observes a dangerous area of a property that is blocked off with a fence and a sign indicating danger. If they enter that area voluntarily, it could affect their damages award if they sustain an injury.

If the property owner is found to be negligent, or breached their duty of care in preventing an accident or injury from occurring on their property, the plaintiff may be awarded damages. These damages generally include:

 • Pain and suffering;
 • Future and present medical bills;
 • Lost income or loss of earning capacity; and/or
 • Punitive or treble damages.

Punitive damages can be available in some types of personal injury claims. These are damages that are intended to punish offenders, and to discourage them from committing the same type of offense. They are mostly awarded in particularly egregious cases in which the defendant acted intentionally, or in a way that greatly disregarded the plaintiff’s safety. The property owner may also be ordered to repair or fix the dangerous condition that led to the injury.

In order to avoid the court system, the property owner and the injured party may come to a trip and fall settlement. This would be an amount of money exchanged for the forfeiture of the right to sue in court.

There are many benefits to hiring a lawyer for trip and fall lawsuits. As these lawsuits can involve many different parties and legal theories, you should consult with an experienced local slip and fall lawyer .

An attorney will inform you of your legal rights and obligations under your state’s laws regarding your trip and fall case. Finally, an attorney will be able to initiate a lawsuit on your behalf, and will also be able to represent you in court, as needed.

Differences Between Trip and Fall and Slip and Fall Claims

Here’s how a trip and fall differs from a slip and fall, and what that means for your personal injury case. Protect your legal rights to fair compensation.

Slip and fall accidents and injuries, trip and fall accidents and injuries.

 • Who Pays Slip or Trip and Fall Claims?

Pursuing Payment for Fall Damages

At first glance, you might think that “slip and fall” and “trip and fall” mean the same thing.

In legal terms, “trip and fall” describes a different type of incident with a different type of injury. The differences can change your legal claim.

Slip and falls are caused by slick surfaces and victims usually fall backward.

Trip and falls are caused by obstacles that trip up a person and make them fall forward or to the side.

As with all personal injury claims, the value of a trip and fall case largely depends on the specific facts of the case.

Slip and fall accidents usually happen when the floor or ground is made slick or slippery. When you put your weight on the slick surface, your feet slide out from under you and you typically fall backward, onto your bottom, hips, or your back.

These kinds of falls can result in serious injuries to your head , neck , back , and various other body parts. Common causes of slips and falls are snowy or icy sidewalks, a wet floor, or some other slippery surface.

Case Example: Icy Parking Lot Causes Slip and Fall Injury

Paul was staying at a big hotel with a private, secured parking lot for guests. It’s the busy holiday season, with parties and business conventions booked every day. However, it was a bad winter with frequent ice and snow storms.

Paul’s company hosted a business conference at the hotel. One evening, Paul was carrying a box of conference materials as he headed to his car. The parking lot was still covered with snow from the night before.

Because of the snow cover, Paul didn’t see the icy patches on the untreated parking lot.

He slipped and fell, slamming the back side of his head and body to the asphalt. A concussion and dislocated shoulder kept Paul out of work for several weeks.

Person tripping over a wire

Trip and fall accidents happen when there is some kind of obstruction on the floor or ground. This dangerous condition, known as a “tripping hazard,” can catch someone’s foot or leg while they are walking or running.

The momentum of a trip and fall accident usually results in the victim falling forward and suffering an injury.

Trip and fall accidents tend to injure different parts of the body. Hands, arms, knees, elbows, and the face can all be potential areas for trip and fall injury claims.

Case Example: Jury Awards $3 Million in Trip and Fall Case

Lynda Sadowski was walking through the Jack Casino when she tripped over a flattened Wet Floor sign, falling forward and fracturing her kneecap. Her knee required surgical repair and left her with diminished mobility.

Casino security film showed that another customer had knocked over the sign earlier. Moments before Sadowski’s fall, a casino employee walked around the flattened sign without picking it up.

The casino argued that Sadowski wasn’t watching where she was going. Sadowski’s attorneys argued the casino “failed to use ‘ordinary care’ for Sadowski’s safety and failed to maintain a reasonably safe environment, resulting in the injury.”

The jury agreed with Sadowski, awarding $3 million for her injuries and pain and suffering.

Sadowski vs. Jack Casino

A trip and fall accident can happen anywhere. Perhaps a crowded antique shop’s narrow aisles are strewn with merchandise that present tripping hazards. Or a rubber mat in front of a building entrance bunches up and presents a tripping hazard. Maybe a veterinarian allows unleashed animals in the office that then get tangled under guests’ feet.

Besides having different causes, trip and fall accidents can also cause different kinds of injuries.

FOOSH injuries (Fallen Onto an OutStretched Hand) are common. FOOSH injuries can include broken wrists, broken arms, and ligament tears. People who trip and fall forward can suffer significant facial trauma and head injuries.

Who Pays for Slip or Trip and Fall Claims?

Person going up the stairs

As with slip and fall cases, trip and fall injury claims are usually premises liability claims. This means that the property owner or manager is the main person responsible for the trip and fall injury.

In most cases, the property or business owner should have control and responsibility for any fall hazards on the premises.

Were you hurt while patronizing a business? There is probably at least one commercial general liability insurance policy that can compensate you for damages.

If you suffered your trip and fall injury at someone else’s home, their homeowner’s insurance policy or renter’s insurance should compensate you for your injury.

There may be other parties responsible for your fall accident. For example, if the owner has leased a commercial property to a business, the business owner may also have responsibility for your injury. If your fall was due to the intentional behavior of a third party, they may also be liable in addition to the owner of the premises or business.

Also keep in mind that slip or trip and fall injuries may give rise to product liability cases.

Examples of product liability in fall claims:

 • If a slip and fall was caused by a pool of melted ice leaking from a defective grocery store freezer, the freezer manufacturer may share responsibility for your injuries.
 • If a trip and fall was caused by a defective hotel rug, the manufacturer of the rug may also be liable for your injury.

Man pointing to a document on the table during a meeting

After figuring out who should pay for your fall injury, the next question is how to pursue a claim to compensate you for your injury.

Decide if you can handle your own trip and fall claim or if it should be handled by a personal injury attorney.

Create an injury claim document file for organizing your medical bills, medical records, and other evidence of how your injury has affected your life.

You’ll also need evidence of the property owner’s negligence, such as photographs of the accident scene and witness statements from people who saw what happened to you.

If you decide to handle your own claim, put together a demand letter so the insurance adjuster can see your damages and decide whether to offer you a settlement. Keep in mind that insurance companies tend to offer less money to unrepresented claimants in the hope they’ll take a quick settlement and go away.

If you cannot settle with the insurance company, you may need to file a personal injury lawsuit. If you haven’t already consulted an experienced attorney, now is the time to get legal advice. The evidence that you gathered for the insurance company will be useful here.

Most claims settle out of court. However, if your attorney takes your trip and fall case to trial, the jury may award a monetary judgment. For example, if you have a broken wrist FOOSH injury, you could get as much as $80,000-$120,000 from a favorable jury verdict.

Minding Your Step

It’s always important to watch where you’re walking and to be careful. But you can’t be responsible for everything, all the time. When you step onto someone else’s property or patronize their business, they need to make sure that you can safely walk through their parking lot, sidewalks, walkways, and buildings.

Never leave the scene of a trip and fall accident without notifying the property owner or manager. If you’re injured at a business location, ask the manager to fill out an incident report .

Seek prompt medical treatment after a slip or trip and fall injury. Tell the medical prover when, where, and how you were injured. You’ll need proof of the accident date and location, along with evidence of your injuries for a successful claim.

A broken wrist or a broken nose may not be fatal. But these injuries can be painful and expensive. You deserve to be compensated. If you or a loved one has suffered a fall injury caused by someone else’s negligence, contact a personal injury law firm in your state for a free consultation.

Understanding Travel Insurance

Travel insurance plans can cover both domestic and international travel. It could protect against something as familiar as delayed baggage (experts estimate 85% of lost luggage is returned to its owner within 48 hours) or as complicated as trip cancellation.

The benefits and limitations of travel insurance vary based on the company and plan. Above all else, this insurance coverage offers peace of mind.

Some credit cards offer a limited amount of travel insurance annually. If you need clarification on what your credit card offers, contact your provider to verify. These plans are great for cancellations and interruptions but may not cover more costly losses associated with unexpected medical expenses or emergency evacuations.

Individual travel insurance plans include this and much more. Travel insurance protects travelers from the unexpected when away from home.

Average Cost of Travel Insurance by Destination

Some countries are naturally more expensive travel destinations due to higher flight and lodging costs, which could increase travel insurance costs. Travel insurance will generally cost 5% to 10% of your total trip price, according to SquareMouth.

Here's how the prices stack up:

How Far in Advance to Purchase Travel Insurance

According to an AAA travel survey , 88% of travelers say that reimbursement after a trip cancellation is the most valuable benefit of trip insurance.

According to data gathered by SquareMouth in the last six months, travelers tend to purchase trip cancellation travel insurance 53 days before their trip. Meanwhile, travelers without trip cancellation insurance will buy a policy approximately 16 days before their trip. Regardless of when you buy, cancellation protection can kick in to protect you against the unexpected.

Average Cost of Travel Insurance by Age

A traveler's age is a significant factor in determining the cost of travel insurance. The older a traveler is, the higher travel insurance premiums are. For instance, a senior traveler may need more insurance for health-related emergencies than a millennial.

When calculating your travel insurance premium, travel insurance providers consider the likelihood of a medical emergency.

How can I save money on travel insurance?

It offers a financial safety net to help you navigate the frustrating realities of travel disruptions. Should you get trip delay insurance and when is it worth it? Find out below.

How to File a Claim for Trip Delay Insurance

How to be ready for travel delays, do you need trip delay insurance .

 • Frequently Asked Questions

Trip delay insurance is a type of travel insurance coverage that reimburses you for certain expenses incurred because of a significant delay in your travel plans. If your flight, cruise, train or other mode of transportation is delayed for a specified period — usually six to 12 hours or more — the insurance kicks in, providing compensation for additional costs like meals, accommodation and transportation.

While millions of travelers don't use trip delay insurance and it's certainly not essential, when you're stuck in an airport halfway to your destination, you'll be happy you bought it.

Trip delay insurance and trip interruption insurance aren't the same, even though the names are similar. It's important to understand the distinction between the two and ensure you have the appropriate coverage for your travel needs.

Trip delay insurance covers expenses related to a temporary delay. On the other hand, trip interruption insurance is designed to protect you if your trip is cut short or you need to return home early because of an emergency or unforeseen circumstances.

According to Progressive, "Trip interruption applies to trips unexpectedly cut short for a covered reason, and trip delay applies to travel plans that are delayed (but not cut short) for a covered reason."

While both can be valuable, you'll find more details on trip delay insurance below.

Trip delay insurance can provide reimbursement for a variety of expenses incurred during a travel delay, which can end up costing hundreds or thousands of dollars. Reimbursed expenses vary by policy, but typically include:

 • Meals and accommodations during the delay period
 • Transportation costs to catch up with your planned itinerary
 • Expenses for activities or tours missed because of the delay
 • Change fees for rescheduling flights or other bookings
 • Reasonable communication expenses for phone calls or internet access en route

Like all other insurance policies, trip delay insurance has limitations and exclusions. Common scenarios not covered include:

 • Delays for personal reasons or negligence
 • Delays caused by preexisting conditions or known events
 • Delays resulting from natural disasters or civil unrest
 • Expenses not directly related to the travel delay

The cost of trip delay insurance varies by provider, the length of your trip, the total cost of the trip and the coverage limits you choose. Most travel insurance companies offer trip delay coverage as part of a comprehensive travel insurance plan or as an add-on option.

For example, a basic travel insurance plan covering a week-long domestic trip might cost around $50 and include up to $500 in trip delay coverage. For longer international trips or higher-end itineraries, the cost could range from $100 to $500 or more, with trip delay coverage limits ranging from $1,000 to $4,000 or higher.

Like any insurance offering, trip delay insurance has advantages and disadvantages. Here are the pros and cons to consider before getting trip delay insurance.

 • Financial protection against unexpected travel disruptions
 • Can offset additional costs from travel delays
 • Peace of mind
 • Reduce travel stress
 • You'll pay for peace of mind
 • Adds to your travel expenses
 • Limitations and exclusions may apply, so you may not get the coverage you need
 • Time-consuming claims require documentation

It's not difficult to get trip delay insurance. You can contact your primary insurance provider, or search for trip delay insurance online. Here's how to get trip delay insurance:

 • Research trip delay insurance and compare total costs, coverage and limitations.
 • Reach out to your primary insurance provider for possible trip delay insurance add-ons.
 • Check online providers to see about better rates.
 • Decide whether you want to purchase comprehensive travel insurance that includes trip delay coverage or get a standalone product.
 • Buy trip insurance for your travel dates, and enjoy the peace of mind of knowing you're covered.

When purchasing trip delay insurance, review the policy details carefully, including the coverage limits, deductibles and any exclusions or requirements. Additionally, ensure you meet any eligibility criteria, such as purchasing the policy within a specified timeframe before your trip.

If you experience a travel delay that qualifies for coverage under your trip delay insurance policy, filing a claim can be a hassle. Be sure to save all documentation or receipts. Then, follow these steps:

 • Contact the provider: Notify your travel insurance provider as soon as possible about the delay.
 • Provide documentation: Gather and retain all relevant documentation, such as receipts for additional expenses, flight itineraries and proof of the delay.
 • Fill out the claim: Complete the claim form provided by your insurance company, providing detailed information about the delay and expenses incurred.
 • Submit the claim: Submit the completed claim form along with the required documentation within the specified timeframe.
 • Follow up to finalize: Cooperate with any additional requests from the insurance company for information or documentation.

While trip delay insurance can provide financial assistance, you'll also want to be proactive and prepare for travel days. By preparing for potential travel disruptions, you can have a backup plan in place.

Here are some tips to help you stay ready:

 • Allow ample time for connections and transfers. For example, one hour is usually too little time for an airline connection.
 • Pack essentials , medications and valuables in your carry-on luggage.

Hot Oceans Worsened Dubai’s Dramatic Flooding, Scientists Say

An international team of researchers found that heavy rains had intensified in the region, though they couldn’t say for sure how much climate change was responsible.

Trucks under water with a bridge in the background.

Scenes of flood-ravaged neighborhoods in one of the planet’s driest regions stunned the world this month. Heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates and Oman submerged cars, clogged highways and killed at least 21 people. Flights out of Dubai’s airport, a major global hub, were severely disrupted.

The downpours weren’t a total surprise — forecasters had anticipated the storms several days earlier and issued warnings. But they were certainly unusual.

Here’s what to know.

Heavy rain there is rare, but not unheard-of.

On average, the Arabian Peninsula receives a scant few inches of rain a year, although scientists have found that a sizable chunk of that precipitation falls in infrequent but severe bursts, not as periodic showers. These rains often come during El Niño conditions like the ones the world is experiencing now.

U.A.E. officials said the 24-hour rain total on April 16 was the country’s largest since records there began in 1949 . And parts of the nation had already experienced an earlier round of thunderstorms in March.

Oman, with its coastline on the Arabian Sea, is also vulnerable to tropical cyclones. Past storms there have brought torrential rain, powerful winds and mudslides, causing extensive damage.

Global warming is projected to intensify downpours.

Stronger storms are a key consequence of human-caused global warming. As the atmosphere gets hotter, it can hold more moisture, which can eventually make its way down to the earth as rain or snow.

But that doesn’t mean rainfall patterns are changing in precisely the same way across every part of the globe.

In their latest assessment of climate research , scientists convened by the United Nations found there wasn’t enough data to have firm conclusions about rainfall trends in the Arabian Peninsula and how climate change was affecting them. The researchers said, however, that if global warming were to be allowed to continue worsening in the coming decades, extreme downpours in the region would quite likely become more intense and more frequent.

Hot oceans are a big factor.

An international team of scientists has made a first attempt at estimating the extent to which climate change may have contributed to April’s storms. The researchers didn’t manage to pin down the connection precisely, though in their analysis, they did highlight one known driver of heavy rain in the region: above-normal ocean temperatures.

Large parts of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans have been hotter than usual recently, in part because of El Niño and other natural weather cycles, and in part because of human-induced warming .

When looking only at El Niño years, the scientists estimated that storm events as infrequent as this month’s delivered 10 percent to 40 percent more rain to the region than they would in a world that hadn’t been warmed by human activities. They cautioned, however, that these estimates were highly uncertain.

“Rainfall, in general, is getting more extreme,” said Mansour Almazroui, a climate scientist at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and one of the researchers who contributed to the analysis.

The analysis was conducted by scientists affiliated with World Weather Attribution, a research collaboration that studies extreme weather events shortly after they occur. Their findings about this month’s rains haven’t yet been peer reviewed, but are based on standardized methods .

The role of cloud seeding isn’t clear.

The U.A.E. has for decades worked to increase rainfall and boost water supplies by seeding clouds. Essentially, this involves shooting particles into clouds to encourage the moisture to gather into larger, heavier droplets, ones that are more likely to fall as rain or snow.

Cloud seeding and other rain-enhancement methods have been tried around the world, including in Australia, China, India, Israel, South Africa and the United States. Studies have found that these operations can, at best, affect precipitation modestly — enough to turn a downpour into a bigger downpour, but probably not a drizzle into a deluge.

Still, experts said pinning down how much seeding might have contributed to this month’s storms would require detailed study.

“In general, it is quite a challenge to assess the impact of seeding,” said Luca Delle Monache, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. Dr. Delle Monache has been leading efforts to use artificial intelligence to improve the U.A.E.’s rain-enhancement program.

An official with the U.A.E.’s National Center of Meteorology, Omar Al Yazeedi, told news outlets that the agency didn’t conduct any seeding during the latest storms. His statements didn’t make clear, however, whether that was also true in the hours or days before.

Mr. Al Yazeedi didn’t respond to emailed questions from The New York Times, and Adel Kamal, a spokesman for the center, didn’t have further comment.

Cities in dry places just aren’t designed for floods.

Wherever it happens, flooding isn’t just a matter of how much rain comes down. It’s also about what happens to all that water once it’s on the ground — most critically, in the places people live.

Cities in arid regions often aren’t designed to drain very effectively. In these areas, paved surfaces block rain from seeping into the earth below, forcing it into drainage systems that can easily become overwhelmed.

One recent study of Sharjah , the capital of the third-largest emirate in the U.A.E., found that the city’s rapid growth over the past half-century had made it vulnerable to flooding at far lower levels of rain than before.

How artificial intelligence is changing the way you buy travel insurance.

Artificial intelligence is changing the way you buy travel insurance. Here's how.

Artificial intelligence is transforming the way you buy travel insurance. From shopping for a policy to filing a claim, there's no part that hasn't been touched by AI.

"AI is revolutionizing travel insurance," says Greg Jung, chief growth officer for Seven Corners . "It's making it more efficient and tailored to individual needs."

Words like "efficient" and "tailored" are rare in the one-size-fits-all, bureaucratic travel insurance industry. For years, consumers had limited choices. And when they filed a claim, it took close to forever to get an answer, much less get paid.

Not anymore.

Jung says AI is doing away with that. The benefits to travelers include:

 • Personalized coverage. AI can analyze vast amounts of data on traveler profiles, including travel history, preferences, and even risk factors like age and health conditions. That allows insurers to recommend customized travel insurance plans that provide the right level of coverage for each individual's needs.
 • Proactive risk management. AI can analyze data to predict potential disruptions or emergencies that could impact a traveler's trip. This allows insurers to offer assistance, such as medical advice or flight rebooking assistance, in case of unforeseen events.
 • Faster claims processing. AI can automate much of the claims process, verifying documents, assessing damages, and expediting settlements. Travelers can be reimbursed for covered expenses much more quickly, especially for straightforward claims.

Behind the scenes, travel insurance companies are also using AI to conduct better risk management. And there are parts of the business where travel insurance companies won't talk about how they use AI, such as in efforts to sell policies on their sites. Travel insurance companies are also hush-hush about how they are analyzing data to set rates and identify patterns in fraudulent claims data.

WhatsApp Brand New iPhone Feature Just Launched That’s Much Easier To Use

Apple s iphone ai plans confirmed with new software release, packers complete safety overhaul with georgia s javon bullard.

This story is a long time coming. Travel insurance companies have been generally slow to adopt AI. You can see artificial intelligence in action in a few places, but in the places that matter to you — such as finding the best policy — there are still some gaps. AI won't fix everything in travel insurance, but it promises to make many things better.

What took travel insurance so long?

Why has AI been slow to catch on in the travel insurance industry? Well, it has — and it hasn't. I wrote about how Allianz was using machine learning to improve its products five years ago .

But across the industry, change has been gradual.

"Travel Insurance is highly regulated," explains Tim Dodge, vice president of marketing at Arch RoamRight . "There are strict policy definitions, communications guidelines and adjudication rules to which we must adhere. For AI to be successful in our industry, it has to be implemented carefully; improving the customer experience while maintaining regulatory compliance."

If you file a travel insurance claim and get frustrated with the time it takes to be settled, it's because of the way travel insurance is set up. There's a lot of required documentation to review in support of the claim.

Dodge says AI can potentially facilitate and speed up the claims handling process and reduce claimants' frustrations, and that's what travel insurance companies are now doing.

Where can you see AI in action right now in travel insurance?

Travel insurance companies are not waiting for the future.

Arch RoamRight’s AI chatbot has been integrated into every aspect of its customer experience, from its phone system to its website and travel agent portal. It's even used as a training tool for new hires, according to Dodge.

At Generali Global Assistance , a carefully trained chatbot helps customers obtain instant assistance, receive accurate information, and navigate policy complexities. "This digitalization empowers our agents to provide personalized support promptly," says Christopher Carnicelli, CEO of Generali Global Assistance.

Allianz Travel Insurance has been using AI to help streamline its claims process for years. It just added a new chatbot for customer support, too. "Our chatbot supports the customer during filing in the event the customer has questions or needs further assistance, and uses AI to qualify the customer’s needs to quickly get them the help they need,” explains Maggie Butler, director of customer experience at Allianz Partners USA.

At Faye Travel Insurance , an AI-powered app helps customers file claims for flight cancellations, baggage delays, and medical emergencies. The app speeds up the claims process, ensuring travelers get paid in hours instead of days. "It's part of our commitment to making travel insurance an integral and personalized part of each traveler’s experience," says Elad Schaffer, Faye's CEO.

Over time, the entire travel insurance industry will embrace AI. But there are exceptions.

Can artificial intelligence help you find the best travel insurance?

AI might help you find a better policy, but you have to know where to look. I tested the major AIs to see how they responded to a sample query, "I'm a 28-year-old woman who lives in New York. I am planning a one-week trip to Paris this summer. Please help me find the best travel insurance."

 • Gemini offered two options — Generali and Travel Insured International, but did not show rates or a bookable link. The responses appeared to be based on a news article.
 • Meta AI generated a succinct response citing the benefits of travel insurance with key coverage areas.
 • Microsoft Copilot showed a generic "how-to" story about travel insurance based on an article I had written for Forbes.
 • Hugging Face gave a generic response with advice on how to buy travel insurance.
 • Perplexity offered several specific options, including Seven Corners, Nationwide and Travelex. However, it based its quotes on a story on a news site and did not offer a link to buy the policies.

Bottom line: You can't really shop for travel insurance using AI — at least, not yet.

AI doesn't work for everything in travel insurance

In the travel insurance industry, like in other places, artificial intelligence isn't the answer to everything.

For example, at INF Visitor Care , a company that sells travel insurance to those traveling to the U.S., AI is helping automate its claims system. INF applies machine learning to identify emerging trends in claims to design policies that cover customers when they need it for unexpected issues.

"It has revolutionized the way we think about pricing and policy coverages," says PK Rao, CEO of INF Visitor Care .

But when it comes to customer service, AI is not always the best solution.

"We find customers enjoy talking to a live person on chat and phone," adds Rao.

The future of travel insurance and AI is promising

Over the long term, AI promises to reshape the travel insurance business into one that works the way customers expect it to — quickly, nimbly and efficiently.

At least that's what Daniel Green, chief technology officer for Faye Travel Insurance , sees.

"Imagine a world where most insurance claims are processed in hours instead of days," he says. "A computer system can go out and collect all the documentation for you and prepare the paperwork perfectly, ready for a human to make a quick decision on whether to approve it or not."

AI also has the potential to insure you for only what you need — to give you the "perfect" policy.

"AI can prepare it in seconds based on being able to tell a computer in your own words what coverage you need, by having it translated into insurance paperwork-speak for you," he adds.

We aren't quite there yet, but we're getting close.

There's one more thing that is potentially keeping AI from changing travel insurance — and that is customers themselves.

Breanne Armstrong, who is director of insurance intelligence at J.D. Power, says most consumers understand that artificial intelligence and machine learning have a lot of potential, "but there is hesitancy."

Armstrong bases her observation on another study that J.D. Power recently conducted on banking customers and AI. Only 28% of respondents said they believe AI will make their lives better in the next three years. Roughly one-third say it will make no difference, and 17% say it will make their lives worse.

All you have to do is engage with any chatbot to understand those 17% of respondents. Talking to an AI about banking or travel insurance — or anything else, really — can quickly end in frustration.

"There are mixed sentiments," adds Armstrong.

That may well describe how people feel about travel insurance and AI. It could be great. But if it isn't implemented carefully, it could be not so great.

It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .
