Switzerland is considered one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Despite its small size, it has a lot to offer visitors. So, is two days in Switzerland enough? With our 2 Days in Switzerland Itinerary, you will cover the most epic places and experiences.

Switzerland’s cities are very walkable, and connecting travel is very efficient. With two full days in Switzerland ( allowing three nights ),  it is possible to see many of Switzerland’s main attractions and get a good feel for the country. 

We have put together an itinerary that covers two of Switzerland’s most popular destinations – Zurich and Lucerne. Both are very achievable destinations in two days without rushing.

How to Get Around Switzerland

Public transport in Switzerland is the best way to get around. Trains, trams and buses are reliable, clean and easy to navigate. Train travel in Switzerland is the most efficient and enjoyable way to travel between destinations.

On a 2 day Switzerland itinerary, especially one centred around Zurich and Lucerne, the train will be the most efficient way of seeing most of the country. 

There are regular trains between Zurich and Lucerne, each arriving within the city, walking distance to the main attractions. 

Add a River Cruise to Your Swiss Itinerary : A river cruise down the Rhine and Moselle between Paris and Zurich is a great addition to your Swiss itinerary.

Trains Between Zurich and Luzern

• Trains run on average at least every half hour.
• The journey takes 45 – 60 minutes.
• Full price tickets from 30 CHF (31USD)

Swiss Travel Pass

The Swiss Travel Pass allows you to travel on all public transport – Trains, trams, buses, and boats for free. It also offers free and discounted entry to attractions, over 500 museums, and exhibits.

As the Swiss Travel Pass comes in 3, 4, 8, and 15 day passes, it is possibly not something we would recommend for 2 days in Switzerland unless you had a lot of big-ticket travel in mind.

A 2nd class 3 day Swiss Travel Pass will cost CHF 253.00 (263.000 USD). First-class- CHF 386.00 (400.00 USD). 

Swiss Half Fare Card

The Swiss Half fare Card is precisely that – 50% discount on all travel within Switzerland including most mountain scenic railways. 

Again, with only 2 days in Switzerland, we don’t think this would be the best value. 

• The Swiss Half Fare card is valid for one month and costs ~ 120 CHF (125 USD).
• Your total transport expenses would need to exceed 240 CHF (250USD) per person in the two days for it to be any value.

Where to Stay in Switzerland

Since Lucerne and Zurich are quite close to each other, you can stay in either Zurich or Lucerne for three nights and make a day trip to the other. With only 2 days in Switzerland, we have given options for staying one or two nights at each destination. Flexibility for you to choose is key here.

Be aware, accommodation in Switzerland does tend to be more expensive than in many other European countries. 

Luxury Accommodation 

There is no shortage of luxury accommodation with all the perks you would expect from a 5-star hotel. Baur au Lac in Zurich or Schweizerhof in Lucerne are both excellent choices. 

Mid Range Hotels

Mid-range hotels will still be comparatively expensive. In Zurich, you could look a little further from the centre if you don’t want to spend a fortune on accommodation. Zurich’s trendy West Quarter area is a great place to stay with easy access to the city centre by tram. The Renaissance Zurich Tower is an excellent mid-range option surrounded by great restaurants, hip bars, galleries, and shopping. 

In Lucerne, you don’t need to stray too far from the centre. Both Hotel Alpina Luzern and Hotel Monopol are very comfortable and charming hotels. Monopol has views over the river and Old Town and both are very close to the train station. The breakfast at these hotels is particularly good.

Both cities also have good value for money hostels – in Zurich check out Oldtown Hostel Otter Zurich and in Lucerne check out Bellpark Hostel .

2 Days in Switzerland

The Zurich and Lucerne itinerary outlined here is based on having two full days free in Switzerland, which means allowing for three nights. Arriving in Zurich on your first night, take advantage of the evening, if time allows, to get a feel for the city and enjoy the sights by night. 

In summer, you will still have plenty of daylight up until at least 9.30 PM, if not later. In winter, while it will get dark early, you have the Christmas Markets at night to enjoy. 

Day One 24 Hours in Zurich

Zurich, the biggest city in Switzerland. And, probably one of the best places to visit in Switzerland , especially if you are short on time.

While Zurich doesn’t offer some of the breathtaking scenery found in other parts of the country, centred around Lake Zurich, it still cuts a very beautiful scene. A great way to take in the beauty Zurich has to offer is a site-seeing tour and cruise !

Remember, no matter where you are in Switzerland, the Swiss Alps are rarely out of view, even in Zurich.  Add to this a sophistication to rival any of the world’s top cities, a lively city life atmosphere and a historic centre that will delight visitors.

A very walkable city, 24hrs in Zurich is plenty of time to see a lot as many of the main attractions are within walking distance.

• Take an extended city tour through Zürich’s Old Town and surrounding the city including St. Peters Church, the famous Bahnhofstrasse, the Limmatquai, and the Guild Houses.
• Visit the Fraumünster Church
• Take an aerial cable car ride to Felsenegg and marvel at the view over the lake and the Alps
• Take a drive along Switzerland’s “Gold Coast” to Meilen, where you will take a ferry across Lake Zurich.

 Stroll Bahnhofstrasse

On your first morning in Zurich, if you didn’t get a chance the evening before, take a stroll down the Bahnhofstrasse . Bahnhofstrasse is the main street in downtown Zurich and is one of the world’s most exclusive and expensive shopping streets.

Bahnhofstrasse is also the most expensive street in Europe for retail property and the third most expensive in the world. 

While the prestige of Bahnhofstrasse is highly apparent, you will also find more budget-friendly chain stores alongside the luxury brands. 

Explore Zurich Old Town

Duck off Bahnhofstrasse and take some time to explore Zurich Old Town. Zurich Old Town runs either side of the Limmat River which gives the city a quaint and intimate vibe.

Colourful facades, guild houses and historic hotels dot the centre. Wander charming cobblestone streets punctuated with church spires to discover hidden corners with beautiful boutique shopping, traditional restaurants and cafes.

Explore the car-free alleyways of Niederdorf “Little Village” in Old Town where artisan meets antiques for a fabulous shopping experience. 

Take the 5-minute walk to Lindenhof to enjoy beautiful views over Old Town and the river. 

Lake Zurich

Coming from Bahnhofstrasse or Old Town, you will have a great view of the lake and the mountains in the background. On a sunny day, the areas around the lake will be buzzing with people and street artists. At Christmas time, you will also find one of Zurich’s biggest Christmas markets on the lake. 

Depending on the season; if you are up for a sauna or a dip in the lake – take a right and head to Seebad Enge. Zurich has undoubtedly made the most of the crystal waters of Lake Zurich and Limmat River with some fantastic outdoor swimming and sauna venues.  Seebad Enge offers a lake swim or sauna with views of the Alps.

Frauenbad am Stadthausquai offers a gorgeous ladies-only bathing spot during the day and Freibad am Schanzengraben, a bathing retreat for men. After sunset, both bathing houses open their doors as cool open-air bars to a unisex crowd. You can get a full rundown on all of Zurich’s outdoor pools here . 

Take a Cruise

Head left from the end of Bahnhofstrasse where you can take a pleasant stroll along the lake, hire a paddleboat, or, take a cruise. We recommend the cruise. 

The Lake Zurich boat tour, which is also the Lake Zurich ferry, will give you a great perspective of the size of the lake. On a clear day, you will also enjoy beautiful views of the Alps. It also offers the chance to hop on and off at any of the stops that interest you.

If you stay on for the entire circuit, a short lake cruise will take approx 2 hours depending on the season and boat — the long lake cruise up to 3 hrs. 

You could also opt to take in the best of Lake Zurich with a one-hour private luxury boat cruise aboard a classic Sloep Boaton.

A favorite of ours is the Zurich City Tour where you get to explore the Old Town with a guided stroll, kick-back on a 30 minute crusie on Lake Zurich and visit to the Lindt Home of Chocolate , the museum ticket and delicious tastings are included!

Stop at Rapperswil to Explore Old Town

We recommend jumping off at the town of Rapperswil on the south-western shores of Lake Zurich. Take a stroll through the enchanting old town. Allow at least an hour in the pretty yet tiny town before catching the ferry back to Zurich. 

Alternate Ways to Finish Your Day in Zurich.

Option 1 – one more night in zurich..

If you feel like another night in Zurich; finish your day with a drink by the lake.

Then, head back to Limmatquai or Old Town for dinner at one of the many cafes or restaurants . In summer, the city area will be bustling quite late so there will be plenty to enjoy.

In winter, there is no shortage of places to cosy up with a drink or for a meal. 

Option 2 – Take the Train to Lucerne

The train from Zurich to Lucerne takes less than an hour with services running every half hour.

As mentioned, both train stations are centrally located so while many make Lucerne a day trip from Zurich , a late afternoon transfer to Lucerne would not be a stretch. If you can leave Zurich for Lucerne in daylight hours, you can enjoy some beautiful views along the way.

Arrive in Lucerne well before dinner allowing for an additional night in Lucerne and an early start in one of the most popular places to visit in Switzerland.

Day Two. 24 Hours in Lucerne

Whether you arrive in Lucerne the night before or early on the morning of day 2, Lucerne is much smaller than Zurich and very compact, so you will have plenty of time.

If time allows in Zurich, we would recommend arriving the night before, especially if you have already had one night in Zurich. An early start in Lucerne will definitely be advantageous. 

As soon as you arrive, you will realize why Lucerne is the most popular travel destination in Switzerland. Surrounded by the striking panoramas of Mount Rigi and Pilatus, Lucerne offers a myriad of experiences no matter your interest. Chapel Bridge

Across from the train station head to the famous Chapel Bridge – The Kapellbrücke . The covered wooden bridge spanning the river Reuss dates back to the 14th century and is one of the main tourist attractions in Lucerne. Chapel Bridge and its watchtower once formed part of Lucerne’s fortifications; it is the oldest surviving truss bridge in the world. 

Wander across the bridge and enjoy the most beautiful views of Lucerne set against the Swiss Alps. You will quickly realise why Lucerne is often named one of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland. 

Lucerne Old Town

Crossing the Chapel Bridge from the “New Town” on the south bank, you will reach the Old Town on the north bank. Wander the charming traffic-free streets and squares of Old Town. 

Walk the length of the Musegg Wall, the 870m, 14-century rampart with nine towers. The views from the top over Lucerne are worth the short stroll up. See the famous Zytturm (clocktower). The 52-meter high tower holds the oldest clock in the city which dates back to 1535. 

Stop by the Lion Monument – a monument dedicated to the Swiss Soldiers who died in the French Revolution.

Lake Lucerne: Vitznau, Weggis, and Mount Rigi

Lake Lucerne is rated as one of the most scenic lakes in Switzerland so time on the lake will never disappoint, no matter the season. Combine this with the vistas from Mount Rigi, and you have one of the most quintessential Swiss experiences. 

Take a scenic cruise on Lake Lucerne to Vitznau. (It is possible to take a bus or train if you prefer). Ferries run every few hours and take less than an hour to reach Vitznau. 

From Vitznau, catch the cogwheel train to Rigi Kulm, the highest peak on Mount Rigi. The train ride to the summit offers postcard Swiss landscapes. From the peak, you have to most dramatic views of no less than 13 lakes, including Lake Lucerne. 

From the top of Mount Rigi, there are many hikes you can do, or you can stop for a drink or a meal at one of the mountain restaurants. Mount Rigi is also a spectacular spot for sunset.

If you choose to stay for sunset, make sure you check the times for the last train, cable car and ferry times, so you don’t get stranded. 

Take the cogwheel train down to Rigi Kaltbad and change to the aerial cable car down to Weggis. From Weggis, you can again meet the ferry for your return to Lucerne.

If you make it back to Weggis in time, and you are prepared, spend some time at the lake and maybe even take a dip.

Option 1 – one more night in lucerne..

If you didn’t take the afternoon train from Zurich on day one or, feel like another night in Lucerne, enjoy the ambience of Old Town from one of the riverside cafes. It is an excellent opportunity to try your hand at a traditional Swiss fondue. Think of it as a fondue with a view. You can catch the train the following morning back to Zurich for your departure.

Option 2 – Return to Zurich

Whether you have an early departure or have already enjoyed one night in Lucerne, you can quickly jump on a train and be back in Zurich in time for dinner. Thanks to the frequent train services and proximity to Zurich, it is also possible to have dinner in Lucerne and return to Zurich for a nightcap.

Switzerland’s efficient transport system and the nature of a small country offers such great flexibility to your itinerary

As you can see, 2 days in Switzerland will allow you time to get a feel for the country and tick off some of Switzerland’s biggest attractions.

Some of the best day trips are just 20 minutes away, while others will take you away the entire day from sunrise to sunset (or beyond). Whether you’re traveling solo , celebrating a birthday in Vegas with friends, as a couple or with your family, there’s something on this epic list of day trips from Las Vegas to fit every travel style .

Day trips from Las Vegas

Located in the Mojave Desert, there’s so much to see and do in the area. Here are some of the best ideas for things to do outside of Vegas!

1. Red Rock Canyon (one of the best things to do near Las Vegas)

Distance from Las Vegas: 16 miles / 20 minutes

Perhaps one of the shortest day trips from Las Vegas is the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. It’s perfect for a full day of adventure away from the busy city, yet close enough for a quick drive.

One of the most popular things to do is the Red Rock Canyon scenic drive . This one-way, 13 mile drive takes you through the entire conservation area. Stop at Calico II to see the vibrant red sandstone rocks.

Bring grippy hiking shoes for the 2.2 mile hike on the Calico Tanks Trail . This fun, interactive hike requires a bit of scrambling to get to the viewpoint of the Las Vegas strip. So cool!

You’ll actually need a timed entry reservation to see the conservation area from October through May, so be sure to reserve your spot in advance! If you can’t grab a spot, consider booking a Red Rock Canyon hiking tour which includes park entry.

Of course, come prepared with enough water and high protein snacks. If you’re hiking be sure to bring the 10 essentials and a satellite communicator in case of emergency.

2. Valley of Fire State Park

Distance from Las Vegas: 56 miles / 48 minutes

Valley of Fire is a famous Nevada State Park, and a nature preserve area known for its breathtaking red sandstone and rock formations. It consists of 40,000 acres of Aztec sandstone.

Prehistoric remnants and unparalleled vistas are intertwined among the valley’s red rocks. There are also ancient petroglyphs that were carved into the Aztec Sandstone rock formations. These spectacular rock formations are best viewed on a sunny day, and every sunset, they illuminate the valley, making it appear they’re on fire.

There are several outdoor activities that you can do in the Valley of Fire. The park offers a short hike for you to survey the area’s scenic views.

As you explore the site, take advantage of these fascinating rock formations like the Valley of Fire Beehives, Atlatl Rock, Elephant Rock and the Fire Wave. They will surely leave you speechless in their beauty.

You can stay overnight in the Valley of Fire; various campgrounds located near this famous spot for camping enthusiasts. And reservations in advance are required, check the  park’s website  for more details.

Valley of Fire is approximately 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas; it would take you about 1 hour to get there by car. Take the I-15 north for about 35 to 40 miles from the Las Vegas Strip. Head east toward the Valley of Fire/Lake Mead from Exit 75. The West Entrance Station is located in the Valley of Fire, about 17 miles away.

The best time to visit the park is in October and April. The temperatures are mild and pleasant during this period, while they are extremely hot during the summer. The park is open from sunrise until sunset.

3. Kanarra Falls

Distance from Las Vegas: 159 miles / 2 hours, 33 minutes

At just 2.5 hours from Las Vegas, Kanarra Falls is the perfect day trip for adventure lovers. Grab your hiking boots and trekking poles and head off to this amazing slot canyon.

After arriving at the trailhead you’ll see a small restroom and ticket counter. They only allow 150 hikers a day, so it’s strongly recommended that you reserve your tickets online before arriving as no more tickets are sold on-site once the limit is reached. 

The hike itself is a moderate 3.8-mile hike directly through an epic slot canyon. Be prepared to get wet as the majority of the hike will have you walking through ankle-deep water (sometimes higher).

After about 1.6 miles you’ll see your first waterfall. If you choose to continue up the ladder, you’ll find the second waterfall about 0.3 miles later.

It will surely be a hike you won’t soon forget. Kanarra Falls is one of the best things to do near Las Vegas!

4. Lake Mead

Distance from Las Vegas: 31 miles / 36 minutes

Lake Mead is a wonderful afternoon or a day escape from the bustling city of Las Vegas! Located less than an hour outside of Las Vegas in Boulder, Nevada, visitors to Lake Mead are greeted with a surplus of outdoor activities sure to provide an outdoor recharge. 

For Lake Mead day trips Las Vegas, it’s recommended to drive so that visitors have flexibility to explore different parts of this natural preserve throughout the afternoon.  

Enjoy hiking, navigating slot canyons, swimming and boating at Lake Mead.  Keep in mind that there is no lifeguard on duty, and that swimming and boating beaches are separated. 

More of a relaxed afternoon can be spent driving to one of the many pull out parking spots to enjoy some views with a picnic lunch. Most of the pull out parking spots include a bathroom house.  

Visiting outside of summer months is most recommended as the Mojave Desert can heat up to 120 degrees fahrenheit during this time of year.  

A huge plus is that the natural preserve accepts the Annual National Parks Pass . Without the pass, entrance is $30 per vehicle.

5. Zion National Park (a favorite on this list of day trips from Las Vegas)

Distance from Las Vegas: 159 miles / 2 hours, 41 minutes

One of the best day trips from Las Vegas is visiting Zion National Park in Utah. Just over 2.5 hours from Vegas, Zion offers incredible views and adventures you’ll love.

The perfect Zion itinerary for one day is to take the shuttle into the Zion Scenic Drive to see the impressive canyon. If you’re up for adventure, hike The Narrows.

The Narrows is the popular hike where the canyon narrows and you can walk through the Virgin River (up to 10 miles round trip) to see the massive canyon up close as it closes in. Be sure to bring water shoes and hiking sticks for The Narrows.

Alternatively, you could get crazy awesome views on the Canyon Overlook Trail . It’s just one mile round trip, offering wide open views of the canyon with less effort.

Grab lunch or ice cream at the Zion Lodge or in Springdale, just outside the park. Or, pack a picnic and enjoy the views of the canyon! Regardless of if you’re solo, as a couple, with friends or visiting Zion with kids , it’s a fabulous adventure and perfect day trip from Las Vegas.

Just be sure to take the right hiking essentials when visiting in Zion, like good hiking shoes and plenty of water!

6. Hoover Dam

Distance from Las Vegas: 37 miles / 39 minutes

Hoover Dam from Las Vegas is a short drive, and one of the best ways to spend a day away from the city. You can rent a car and drive yourself or take a tour from Vegas . See the historic Hoover Dam, which was completed in 1936.

As a visitor to the Hoover Dam, you can park for free and walk to the viewpoint on both the Nevada and Arizona Sides. The Nevada side you can see the front of the dam. On the Arizona side, you’ll see the Colorado River and the back side of the dam.

The visitor center has information on the history and architecture of the dam. If you rent a car and drive yourself, the parking lot closest to the entrance is $10 to park, or you can walk the 0.7 miles from the free parking to get there.

One of the best ways to learn about the dam’s construction is through a Power Plant Tour. You’ll actually get to go down into the dam to see how it works!

At the time of publication, you can purchase a Guided Power Plant Tour online but not a Guided Dam Tour so if you want the most in-depth tour of the dam, you’ll need to get there early to get a tour, because it’s first come, first serve and sells out quickly.

7. Grand Canyon from Las Vegas via helicopter

Distance from Las Vegas: 45 minutes (flight time)

Enjoy the beauty of the Grand Canyon without all the driving! Grand Canyon tours from Las Vegas are a very efficient way to see the 4th most visited national park in the USA !

While driving to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas (see #14 below) allows you to hike and see the South Rim, a helicopter tour allows you to land inside the canyon, thousands of feet below the rim.

Outside of the city but comfortable enough to do in a day, here are more ideas for ya. There’s so much to see in the area!

8. Emerald Cave kayaking (one of the most fun things to do outside of Vegas)

Distance from Las Vegas: 55 miles / 58 minutes

Kayaking in the Emerald Cave is a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the Vegas strip. The cave is located in the Lake Mead Recreation Area, along a calm section of the Colorado River.

Your journey to the caves will include a relaxing kayak ride along the Colorado River. The surrounding hills and cliff walls are awe-inspiring as they tower above you. 

Along the way, you can also go ashore and take a number of short hikes for a better view of the river and rock walls. These hikes will also give you a chance to see the unique flora and fauna of the area. 

The Emerald Cave itself will often get crowded, and only a few kayaks can enter at a time. The cave is shallow, giving you a chance to enter, take pictures, and then exit again within a few minutes time. 

Within the cave, you’ll see a green glowing light reflecting off of the water and onto the cave walls. This green glow is where the Emerald Cave gets its name. The best time of year to see the full emerald effect is to go in summer on a sunny day. 

To reach the caves, you can drive to Lake Mead Recreation Area and rent a kayak there, or book a half-day tour , which includes hotel pickup and drop-off services from Las Vegas. For your trip, it helps to bring the right gear , including a good backpack and water shoes . 

The tour will provide you with guidance and instruction along the way, so it’s a great option if you’re newer to kayaking or unfamiliar with the area.

9. Mojave National Preserve

Distance from Las Vegas: 68 miles / 1 hour, 9 minutes

If you’re looking for a way to get away from Las Vegas but want somewhere with few crowds, then consider making a visit to Mojave National Preserve. In just an hour’s drive on Interstate 15 from the big city, you’ll find hiking trails, caves, and much more to explore.

First, head to Cima Road, which is home to more Joshua Trees than you’ll even be able to find within the namesake national park. These are rare trees, only growing within certain parts of the southwest.

Another one of the best things to do is to visit the Kelso Dunes. These beautiful sand dunes offer viewpoints of the surrounding mountains and the opportunity to stand on top of the tallest dune.

The Lava Tubes Trail offers a short hike and a unique experience in a cave. There aren’t many places where you’re able to climb directly into the tube, so this one shouldn’t be missed!

Other fun activities include seeing the cinder cones along Aiken Mine Road, hiking the Teutonia Peak Trail, and visiting the Mojave Desert Mailbox. Because you’ll be in the desert, be sure to dress comfortably to stay cool while you’re out exploring.

It’s also nice to have a high-clearance vehicle for the visit, as some roads can be pretty rough. Also, be sure to check the status of the roads, because wintertime may bring snow and poor weather conditions.

10. UTV adventure at the McCullough Mountains

Distance from Las Vegas: 25 miles / 49 minutes

Get ready for an epic adventure in Prime Valley and Hidden Valley at the McCullough Mountain Range, Nevada . This is one of the most fun day trips from Las Vegas if you’e looking for an adrenaline-filled time!

This half day UTV excursion takes you through fun, rugged desert terrain just outside of Las Vegas. You’ll get to see Hidden Valley National Monument during your excursion.

An excursion like this was one of the most fun things to do in Aruba , and I think you’ll agree it’s an awesome day trip from Vegas , too. Drivers must be 16 or older, and each UTV is fit for 2 people. Kids as young as 12 can ride with an adult, so it’s great for families with older kids, too.

Pro tip: wear clothes you can get dirty and closed toes shoes.

Pack anything you don’t want to get dirty in a dry bag with a strap and tie it down. That prevents dirt from penetrating a backpack for other cloth bag. This is the dry bag I used while UTVing and it worked great! Don’t forget to take extra water in reusable water bottles , too.

11. Death Valley National Park (one of the best places to visit near Las Vegas for scenery)

Distance from Las Vegas: 110 miles / 1 hour, 55 minutes

Death Valley is one of the best national parks in California and a perfect day trips from Las Vegas if you are looking to escape the crowds and explore the stunning landscapes of the Mojave Desert. 

Although summers bring triple-digit temperatures to Death Valley, winter has a mild sunny weather with no snow, except for high altitudes. 

You can get to Death Valley by taking a guided tour from Las Vegas that includes major highlights of the national park or renting a car in Las Vegas . If you rent a car, you will have more freedom exploring this vast area and also enjoy stargazing at night since Death Valley boasts incredible dark skies free of light pollution.

The park has many hikes like Golden Canyon, overlooks and is also home to the lowest point in North America, Bad Water Basin, that sits at 282 feet below sea level. Since Death Valley is the largest national park in the lower 48 states, prepare to drive longer distances, as some points of the interest are as far as 50 minutes away from one another.

12. Spring Mountain Ranch State Park

Distance from Las Vegas: 24 miles / 27 minutes

Some of the oldest buildings in Nevada lie right next to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation area at the Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. This historic ranch is a fun little day trip from Las Vegas , where you can tour old buildings like a blacksmith shop and sandstone cabin.

Nestled in a picturesque setting, it’s a lesser-known attraction in the Las Vegas area , so you’ll really be able to escape the crowds. Pack a picnic and enjoy the outdoors. The best time to visit this state park is October through May.

The Spring Mountain Ranch State Park is a great spot for beginner hikers or families and pets, too. Hike the Spring Mountain Ranch Loop trial, at just 1.5 miles and flat, it’s an easy trail for nearly any skill level.

13. Seven Magic Mountains

Distance from Las Vegas: 26 miles / 27 minutes

A fun experience close to Las Vegas is the Seven Magic Mountains . These colorful stacked boulders are an art instillation that took social media by storm in 2016, thousands of visitors come to the Seven Magic Mountains annually.

It’s a free, short day trip from Las Vegas, and one worth visiting if you’re looking for something low-key to do in the area. And bonus – no extra hiking gear or picnic supplies required.😊 It’s perfect for when you’re visiting Las Vegas with kids !

Created by artist Ugo Rondinone and supported by the Nevada Museum of Art  and  Art Production Fund , this is a free attraction although donations are always welcome! Take as many photos as you desire, but please don’t damage the boulders.

Seven Magic Mountains is one of the best things to do outside of Vegas that doesn’t take a lot of time, either.

Full day trips from Las Vegas

With 3+ hours of driving each way, these are the best day trips from Las Vegas that make a long day, but totally worth the effort! Of course if you have more time, these destinations would make great weekend trips from Las Vegas, too.

14. South Rim of the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas

Distance from Las Vegas: 279 miles / 4 hours, 22 minutes

If you’re looking to escape the intenseness of Las Vegas for a day and want to spend some time surrounded by incredible scenery you’ll never forget, head to  the Grand Canyon South Rim .

The Grand Canyon is one of the most extraordinary natural wonders of the world and offers absolutely stunning views. The South Rim in particular is considered to be the best part with its really expansive views and is truly a sight to see.

There are many unique hikes and viewpoints such as Mather Point that you can visit at The South Rim – but note that the weather and temperature can change suddenly here so make sure to bring plenty of layers and be prepared for any weather. 15. Horseshoe Bend from Las Vegas

Distance from Las Vegas: 274 miles / 4 hours, 23 minutes

Horseshoe Bend is one of the most photographed sites along the Colorado River and a fantastic excursion for those traveling from Las Vegas.

While on the far end for a day trip, Horseshoe Bend is about 4.5 hours from Las Vegas. Located in Page Arizona, the iconic feature is a must-do for those traveling through the southwest. 

Horseshoe Bend, part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, is one  top things to do in Page Arizona .  It can be done as a stop along with other activities in the area.

The trail and parking for Horseshoe Bend is managed by the city of Page, and doesn’t take any National Park or other park passes for entrance to the site. Parking for Horseshoe Bend is $10 and the site is open from sunrise to sunset daily.

For those visiting the site, the hike requires about 1.5 miles (out and back) to reach the viewpoint for the bend. There’s a small platform located at the end of the trail.

However, be sure to continue on past the viewpoint along the slick stones and you’ll be treated to some great other views of the bend without as many tourists around. You can even climb the small hill to get a better overlook of the site. 

Beyond Horseshoe Bend, there’s plenty of other things around Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Visit to the nearby Glen Canyon Bridge and Dam is worth a quick excursion. Visitors can view the amazing engineering feats of creating both the bridge and dam in this part of the river.

There’s also great hiking nearby such as the Hanging Gardens Hike, the Chains, and The “New Wave” which is a lovely banded sandstone area close to the glen canyon dam.

16. Bryce Canyon National Park (one of the most epic day trips from Las Vegas)

Distance from Las Vegas: 259 miles / 4 hours, 3 minutes

You’ll want to get up early for this one! As a day trip, this is doable but a pretty long day. It would make a great weekend trip from Las Vegas, too.

Anyway, Bryce Canyon National Park is home to the famous hoodoos, which are irregularly shaped rock spires. Witness the unique beauty of this landscape from Bryce Point or Inspiration Point.

If you’re up for hiking, try the Queens Garden Trail and Navajo Loop , which is a fun, interactive trail. It’s 3.1 miles and rated as moderate, you’ll weave through hoodoos and witness the bright orange and red rocks up close.

Have a picnic at Sunset Point or enjoy the views at Sunrise Point, too. You can see all the Bryce Canyon National Park highlights in just one day!

17. Joshua Tree National Park

Distance from Las Vegas: 186 miles / 3 hours, 8 minutes

One of the best day trips from Las Vegas is a day in Joshua Tree . It takes about 3 hours to drive from Las Vegas to Joshua Tree National Park, but it is worth the drive and a great way to escape the city.

Joshua Tree is best during the spring or fall when temperatures are more moderate. In the summer, the park gets very hot, and in the winter it’s cold. However, if you’re taking a day trip in the winter, you will still experience the warmest part of the day in winter.

While in Joshua Tree, take the quick hike to Arch Rock, drive down Queen Valley Road, visit the Cholla Cactus Garden, and, of course, see all the Joshua Trees. One of the best places to find a high concentration of Joshua Trees is along Queen Valley Road or on Park Boulevard from the West Entrance Station.

18. Antelope Canyon (a popular tour from Las Vegas)

Distance from Las Vegas: 278 miles / 4 hours, 32 minutes

Las Vegas is such a fun city to explore but many people don’t realize there are amazing places to visit outside of Las Vegas. Antelope Canyon is a popular slot canyon in Page, Arizona.

The canyon is full of beautiful Navajo Sandstone that makes for some of the most stunning views you’ll find. Getting to escape from the concrete jungle of Las Vegas is a great way to refresh and enjoy some time away from the city.

If you’re planning on visiting Antelope Canyon, there are a few things you must know.

The canyon is on Navajo land and is restricted to tours by Navajo tour guides and tours are required to visit. You’ll want to book in advance to ensure you can get a tour. If you find that Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon are booked, look into tours of Antelope Canyon X .

May to October get really busy, the earlier you book your tour , the better.

To do Antelope Canyon as a day trip from Las Vegas, follow I-15 North through Saint George, Utah. Then take UT-9 to Hwy 59 towards Kanab, UT, where you’ll get on the US-89 East to Lake Powell and Page, Arizona. The drive is a little long, but it makes for a great adventure to one of the most beautiful slot canyons you can find!

19. Palm Springs

Distance from Las Vegas: 231 miles / 4 hours, 9 minutes

If you’re up for a slightly longer drive, taking a day trip from Las Vegas to Palm Springs is an ideal way to add some fun and adventure to your travels. Though it’s situated about 4 hours away, there are so many ways to spend one day in Palm Springs !

You can explore the iconic downtown area, which features boutique shops, hip galleries, and tasty restaurants. Or, check out the original retro architecture on residential homes and hotels.

Outdoor lovers can venture out for a day hike at one of the many trails, such as Tahquitz Canyon. One can’t-miss activity for any first time visitor is the famous Palm Springs aerial tramway, which takes you up the nearby San Jacinto Mountains for panoramic views of the surrounding valley.

With so much natural beauty to explore, it’s no wonder why Palm Springs has become such a popular getaway spot for travelers from Las Vegas.

Be aware that summer is a tough time for hiking and strenuous activity in the California desert. If visiting in the summer months, I would recommend visiting one of the many pool and mineral springresorts.

20. Red Rock Canyon State Park

Distance from Las Vegas: 240 miles / 3 hours, 41 minutes

Did you know there are actually 2 Red Rock Canyons to escape to as a day trip from Las Vegas?

Not to be confused with the National Conservation Area just a few minutes outside of Vegas,  Red Rock Canyon State Park  is a 3.5 hour drive from Las Vegas. While it’s a long drive for a day trip, it’s doable starting before sunrise and driving back at sunset.

Located in Cantil, California, Red Rock Canyon State Park is part of the Mojave Desert. Once you’re there, you’ll be surrounded by stunning Joshua Trees and get a breathtaking view of sandstone cliffs as far as the eye can see.

Enjoy activities such as rock climbing, picnicking, easy nature walks, as well as beginner canyoneering. Best of all, you won’t find huge crowds here, so enjoy the peaceful escape from the city.

21. Grand Staircase Escalante (another favorite on this list of day trips from Las Vegas)

Distance from Las Vegas: 213 miles / 3 hours, 26 minutes

Grand Staircase Escalante is a fun and unique day trip from Las Vegas. If you’re looking to hike some really cool slot canyons, Grand Staircase is the place to do it.

A 3.5 hour drive from Vegas, there are a  few different slot canyons  located within Grand Staircase Escalante to visit. One of the most famous is Zebra Slot Canyon, a canyon that has stripes along the wall making it look like the stripes on a zebra!

Besides hiking the slot canyons in the area, there are plenty of other amazing trails to hike in this area. To get to Grand Staircase Escalante, head northeast on I-15 towards St. George, once in St. George depending on where you want to go in Grand Staircase either head towards Kanab or head towards Bryce Canyon.

The roads inside of Grand Staircase aren’t paved and a lot of the roads require you to have a 4×4 vehicle. Make sure to always check with the visitor centers nearby in Kanab and Escalante before heading out to make sure the weather and roads are safe for exploring.

22. Alabama Hills (one of the most scenic things to do near Las Vegas)

Distance from Las Vegas: 246 miles / 4 hours, 13 minutes

Alabama Hills, California is an underrated destination that’s gained in popularity over the last decade or so. A long day trip from Las Vegas, it can be done in a single day with an early morning and late night, or better yet, as a weekend getaway from Las Vegas!

With expansive views of these smooth rocky formations, there’s quite a bit to see and do in Alabama Hills. Movie Road is aptly named based on the volume of films that have been shot here. Drive down it and recognize scenes from Iron Man and Gladiator, just to name a few.

There’s plenty of hiking opportunities in Alabama Hills , too. Grab your hiking shoes and head to the famous Mobius Arch, coming in at less than one mile. Or explore views of the snow-capped mountains on the Upper Alabama Hills Trail to Cyclops Skull Arch .

Best 2-Week Holiday Destinations

I know that two weeks is not a very long holiday for someone, but this is the reality for many people. If you are from Europe, Australia, or New Zealand, a three-week holiday is about normal. But in places like the US, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, two weeks is more the standard.

Don’t fret, that doesn’t mean you can’t go exploring the world. Although I run my own business, I still get in situations where I can only go away for 2-3 weeks at a time. If it’s only a 2-week vacation, I make sure that I don’t bring my laptop and take a full break from work.

This list of the best 2-week holiday destinations will show you why these places are worth taking the trip for. I also included a link to each destination to specific 2-week itineraries to give you an idea of how to spend 14 days there.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST DESTINATION FOR YOUR VACATION

Two weeks can easily be spent in a small country like Denmark or Maldives. While a massive country like Australia, two weeks might not be enough, but it’s plenty if you focus your itinerary on one area.

Have you been here before

I was a preacher of exploring new places. However, that changed when I only had limited time for a vacation. If I really want to, I’d choose a new place. But if I’m looking to lie on the beach, drinking cold coconut, I’d pick a nice destination near me even if I’ve been there before.

Sometimes, I even go to the same country but will explore a different part. For example, if last year you spent two weeks on the east coast of the US . Perhaps, this year, you could explore the Midwest or the West Coast of the US .

If you spent the summer in the south of France last year, maybe this year, you can save the holiday and go skiing in winter in the mountains of France.

Distance from home

The number one that I will recommend is calculating the distance of the destination from home. If you only have exactly 2 weeks, coming from Canada and heading to Australia, you’ll easily spend 2-3 days travelling, not to mention the fatigue from jetlag.

That doesn’t mean you should never visit Australia, but maybe you can rearrange your holiday and make sure it starts on Saturday and ends on Sunday. You can book a flight that leaves on the evening of Friday. In this way, you can account for the travel time during the weekend and not shave off your actual off-from-work-time .

You can also save that destination for the year where you didn’t use your sick leave and instead convert it to holiday leave.

First, check how long the flight is and how many connections are. There are no flights directly to Australia from the US, perhaps, that would be a good route for you. Just avoid 2-3 connections if possible.

Of course, the season will play a big part. Some companies require employees to take annual holidays during a specific season. While people with children usually take their time off during summer when school is also on a break.

Choose destinations like the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Southeast Asia if you want a summer holiday. Destinations like Switzerland, Canada , and the Nordics are great for winter activities.

One thing to remember, the seasons are different in the southern hemisphere. So, don’t expect warm temperatures in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Chile, and Argentina from May to August.

Knowing the season in your destination will help you write your travel itinerary and packing list for your 2-week trip or a packing list for a summer trip . It will also help you visualise the activities you can do. For example, don’t expect to go swimming in the ocean in Australia from June to August because the water is absolutely freezing. Those months are the winter season in Australia and New Zealand.

One last thing – budget. If you have a limited budget, perhaps a holiday domestically will be a better option. This way, you can easily drive around, save money on transportation, and spend it on a nice hotel room.

Countries in Southeast Asia and South Asia, such as Sri Lanka are one of the most affordable places in the world. So, if you’re after good food, extraordinary adventures, interesting culture, and budget-friendly – consider this region.

If you have all the budget, places like Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, Scandinavia, Western Europe, and North America are fantastic destinations. Do you know that not many people expect Chile and Israel to be expensive?

BEST 2-WEEK HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS

Honestly, almost any place in the world can be an excellent destination for your 2-week vacation. But here, I include the places I spent 10-14 days in, and I will explain why they are perfect for a short holiday period.

I know, Brazil is such a huge country. However, most people, especially seasonal travellers, are keen to see popular places, such as Rio de Janeiro and the Amazon. Rio will give you the best beach holiday you expect from Brazil

From beach bumming or dancing on Carnival, there’s nothing better than water activities and street parties. Spending 7 days in this region of Brazil, you can also visit Sao Paulo. Before heading north, you can take a 2-day stopover at the capital city of Brasilia.

After that, if you are up for an adventure, you can get on a flight to Manaus, where you can spend some time inside the Amazon Jungle. Of course, not all areas are accessible but you can simply book a cruise or a 2 or 3-night stay in a cabin. Check out 2 weeks in Brazil itineraries .

Cambodia will always be one of my favourite destinations for a 2-week vacation. During this time, you can explore the magnificent and unique Angkor Wat, which should take 2-3 days. Make sure to do a day trip and visit Battambang to experience the bamboo train ride.

Next, head to Sihanoukville for some water activities under the sun. Book a boat trip that will take you to Koh Rong Samloem and Koh Rong (different islands that sit next to each other).

For the final leg of your vacation, head to the capital city Phnom Penh where you can learn more about Cambodian culture, including the genocide that happened in the 70s. From here, you should not have a problem getting on an international flight home. We have a 2-week travel itinerary for Cambodia to give you some ideas.

This country has a perfect size, you can easily spend 14 days in Colombia or stretch it out for another week or two – there’s just so much to see and do!

You could start by landing in the capital city of Bogota. There are many walking tours and day trips you could join. You could learn why Colombia has one of the best coffees in the world, and perhaps, you’d like to bring some home. I personally spent 4 days here, but you could easily spend more.

Next, take a flight to the city of eternal springs – Medellin. Unfortunately, it is more known for its dark history brought by the drug cartels. But with the help of the locals and foreigners who love living and travelling here, slowly, Medellin has created a new welcoming and more positive image.

Your final destination is to visit the Caribbean without spending too much. Take a flight to Cartagena, where you can book boat tours that will take you to beautiful beaches and islands of the Caribbean. You can even take a day trip near Barranquilla, where you can try the mud volcano spa from El Totumo.

If you are thinking of Europe, one of the best 2-week holiday destinations is undeniably France. It is famous for so many things. But its beauty goes beyond the Eiffel Tower and Paris City. France is a destination that you can visit all year round. Looking for a ski destination for winter? The French Alps have you covered.

Thirsty for a beach holiday? The towns of Marseille and Nice sit pretty on the Mediterranean while Bordeaux and Bayonne offer you to go surfing in the Atlantic Ocean. If you plan a 2-week honeymoon , France is a fantastic place for that celebration.

Food lovers or wine enthusiasts? You already know that France will not disappoint you. And if you are a fan of cycling, make sure to schedule your trip during the summer season and follow Tour de France.

Iceland is one of the destinations that many people want to see but also cannot afford. It’s true that Iceland is not affordable. It’s actually one of the most expensive places to travel for many people and even to live for many locals.

But it’s all worth it. When I booked my 2 weeks in Iceland trip, I knew it would cost me more than what I normally spend on a holiday. But I also know it’s a place like no other in the world.

Spending two weeks in Iceland can be affordable. First, most flights from Europe are already affordable. Second, coming from North America, there are a lot of direct flights to Iceland that are affordable.

Second, most tourists rent a car when visiting Iceland. This gives you not only freedom to move, but since it’s popular, there are many deals available where you can book a flight with a car rental combo or car rental and accommodation package.

During your visit, make sure to check out the Blue Lagoon Bath, Gullfoss Falls, Skogafoss, Pngvellir National Park, and Geysir, to name a few. Following the Golden Circle will lead to the most popular spots in Iceland.

From my personal experience, since there is so much to see, explore, and eat in Italy, two weeks here might not cut it. But the good news is that focusing on just one region will work just fine. Then on your next visit, you can travel to a different region and have a completely different yet wonderful experience.

You can choose to focus your holiday in the northern or southern parts. Of course, the South has so much to offer for the summer vacation. In contrast, the north is an excellent area for hiking and learning about the culture and arts. If you want to go skiing, the northern part is your destination.

For food, well, you can never go wrong – everywhere in Italy, the food and wine are worth eating and drinking. Whether you choose the north or the south, you want to start or end your vacation in Rome, I mean, you can’t leave without seeing the historical sites of the Colosseum, the Ruins, and many Piazzas.

We also have an itinerary for 2 weeks in Italy . You can choose between 4 different travel itineraries depending on what you enjoy (i.e historical places, beaches, hiking, etc).

If you really want to make the most out of your vacation, you can spend 2 weeks in Nepal . You can go hiking there, sign up to trek Everest Base Camp and see wild animals in a national park. When I visited Nepal, I had one month, but I was trekking during the first two weeks.

A girl in our tour group was spending her 15-day vacation in Nepal and doing the EBC trek. The trip lasted for 2 weeks, so it’s super ideal, but make sure to train for a continuous trek for 14 days before you depart for the trip.

New Zealand

I’d probably say this depends on where you will be coming from and if the flights are reasonable enough. For example, from Midwest in the US, going to New Zealand might require you to make three connections and about a nearly 36-hour flight.

But if coming from Australia, Thailand, or even Europe, getting to New Zealand is very easy. If you have a very limited 14 days, you can probably make it to New Zealand if you plan to leave Friday night and return on the weekend.

Doing it this way can earn an extra 3-4 days. Although quite a journey to get to, New Zealand is very worth it. There are so many glaciers, lakes, Fjords, and an animal that can only be found here. Spending 2 weeks in New Zealand is perfect; you can explore the North and South Islands.

Israel and Palestine

Israel and Palestine might have political conflicts, but many visitors who come here actually visit both places. There are so many beautiful attractions to explore and so many historical spots. You can definitely spend 2 weeks in Israel and Palestine and get to see most of the top attractions.

In this region, you can also find the famous Dead Sea. A very salty sea, lets you float, and is covered in mud that is great for your skin. If you want to have some time under the sea, Tel Aviv is a popular beach destination, while the Read Sea is a great location for some snorkelling.

Visit places like Bethlehem, Nazareth, Jericho, and the famous Jerusalem. Here, you will find four religions coming together.

For foodies, don’t worry. Israel and Palestine offer you delicious Mediterranean and Middle-Eastern dishes. A lot of them are vegetarian and vegan-friendly. Spending two weeks here is filled with lots of adventure.

Another great destination if you are looking to spend your 2-week vacation in Peru . You can finally see the famous wonder of the world – Machu Picchu. While many tourists opt for multiple-day hikes, you can also go for a day trip from Cusco or spend only a night in the town near the ruins.

Next, you can spend some time in the capital city of Lima and eat some ceviche and lomo saltado . You can also get on a bus and head to Huaraz, a region filled with stunning glaciers and lakes. However, if you plan to hike from Cusco all the way to Machu Picchu, spending 3 weeks in Peru is more suitable.

Philippines

The Philippines is definitely one of the best 2-week holiday destinations on this list, especially if you love the beach and water adventure. It is composed of 7,000+ islands. From hiking beautiful mountains to diving deep down the Pacific Ocean. The Philippines is a famous spot for people who love water activities, the corals here are very unique and cannot be found somewhere else. Getting your diving course certificate ad license here is also more affordable than in Europe or North America.

The locals also speak great English, and communicating and going around is easy. I recommend you not spend too much time in Manila, the capital. While it has its charm, it’s very traffic, and unfortunately, there are not many historical places left to explore except Intramuros. Head to Palawan, Boracay, or Siargao for beach time. Go to the north of hiking options.

South Africa

This is one of my favourite destinations in the world. I’m not going to lie, it’s not the safest country I have been to. But, I didn’t let it stop me from exploring the area. Geared with safety tips in mind, I spent nearly a week at Kruger National Park, where I saw over 50 different species of animals. From giraffes, elephants, big cats, dozens of birds, and lots and lots of animals like impalas and kudus with beautiful horns. 2 weeks in South Africa is plenty. They have great domestic flight choices that will take you to nearly all popular destinations.

After that, I recommend you get yourself to Cape Town. Rich in historical spots, the famous Table Mountain, and the spot where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic Ocean. If you plan to stay longer, check out this 3 weeks in South Africa vacation plan .

I can’t talk about the best destinations without mentioning the gateway to the Far East, right? Thailand is popular for its amazing beaches and very delicious dishes (spicy but yummy). Spending 2 weeks in Thailand means that you can explore both its northern part and the south.

Bangkok, the capital city, is a hub for partying in Southeast Asia like no other. At the same time, famous islands like Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Phuket offer their white sand beaches and great spots for snorkelling and diving. You should be able to find a flight directly to the south, but you might still have to land in Bangkok.

There are airports in every popular tourist destination, so you don’t have to spend too much time getting from one place to another. You should be able to find direct flights between cities with no problem.

The top places you want to visit are Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Koh Samui, to name a few. You won’t surely run out of places to see even though you have been to Thailand before. It’s also a fantastic place to visit if you are on a budget.

The UK might not be many people’s number one travel destination. However, the UK consists of beautiful countries offering amazing destinations for hiking and, as we all know, very rich in history.

The UK is a great destination to spend two fun weeks. You can choose to cover two different countries. Many tourists often combine England and Scotland, while others would go with Northern Ireland and Wales.

Regardless of which places you want to see, they are easy to get to. You can rent a car, take a domestic flight, or use the train system. For starters, I recommend you enjoy the big city of London if you like cities and match it with a quiet exploration of the Scotland Highlands.

But the first time I went to England, specifically London, I was overwhelmed by the number of places I could see in such a short period of time. If it’s you have never been, I recommend you focus on historical spots if that’s your interest. For example, visiting the Tower of London and its surrounding can easily eat up your entire day.

If you don’t like cities, you can head right to Cardiff or explore the stunning Snowdonia, then to Belfast or visit the less touristy area of northern or southern England. For a complete city lover, London, Belfast, and Glasglow are the top cities you may want to visit.

I personally have mixed feelings about Turkey. I have safety concerns for solo female travellers to Turkey. However, I can’t deny how stunned I was by its beauty. Cappadocia is one of the places that is truly magical.

Get on a hot air balloon and see Cappadocia’s beauty from the top. If you want to be challenged, you can rent an ATV and drive around the area. Don’t forget to visit Istanbul, although it’s not the capital city, it’s undeniable how popular it is. It is also the gateway to Asia from Europe.

Here, you can visit Hagia Sofia and the Blue Mosque – the two are just a few hundred metres away. If you are looking for some sun love, the coastal city of Antalya is popular both with foreign and local tourists.

Vietnam is famous for its unique and delicious dishes. Still, it’s also popular for adventurous activities such as motorbiking across the country, hiking to the highest point in Indochina, and visiting the world’s largest cave.

You can easily spend 2 weeks in Vietnam . Believe it or not, small towns around Vietnam have their own domestic airport, train station, or sleeper bus that can get you there. This means you can easily hop from one place to another.

Spend one week in the north, exploring Hanoi, Sa Pa, and Halong Bay (a UNESCO Heritage Site), then hop on a flight to central Vietnam, and then to the south. An easy itinerary to follow that lets you cover the country from top to bottom.

If you are feeling adventurous, you can rent a motorbike either from the north (Hanoi) or the South (Ho Chi Minh City), and travel the country driving it.

Spending 14 days might does it not mean that you shouldn’t travel and enjoy your well-deserved break from work and life.

These places offer a lot of fun things to do, and you can definitely make the most out of your limited yet justified holiday. The key is choosing a place closer to you but offering exciting new activities.

Things to know before visiting the Gili Islands

As far as tiny, picturesque islands go, the Gili Islands have it all and then some. Glassy waters full of colorful marine life, local tradition and culture, a rowdy nightlife scene, and also plenty of places to completely relax under the sun – it's the real deal. 

These three islands – Gili Trawangan , Meno and Air – are generally safe and fairly easy to navigate. As a first-time visitor though, you'll want a quick travel guide on a few specifics regarding trip planning, respectful etiquette, and safety before you arrive.

Take note of these 11 tips for a smooth journey around the Gili Islands.

1. Pack light, or at least skip the giant suitcase

We've been there and witnessed it: giant suitcases piled into the back of the Gili boats, later being lugged around on dusty laneways by sweaty, regretful travelers under the hot sun. Trust us on this one: packing light is the way to go for the Gili Islands. Either leave your suitcase at accommodations in Bali or use a service such as Bali Store Luggage to take care of it while you're island hopping. Between the logistics of getting on and off the Gili boats, plus the fact that the Gili Islands don't have any motorized vehicles – you're much better off bringing only what's comfortable to carry on your back.

2. Decide how to split your time between the three islands (or just wing it)

Whether you enjoy a quick weekend getaway or slowly move through all three islands over the course of a week, deciding how to split your time in advance is advantageous. Each island brings a different personality, with Gili Trawangan being notorious for parties and nightlife. Gili Meno, in the middle, draws a more laidback crowd – those seeking tranquility (and a decent number of honeymooners). To the east, Gili Air falls somewhere in the middle of the chill scale, where it's easy to bliss out in silence or get social at one of the island's many cheerful beach bars.

Even though the islands are small, you can have a completely different experience depending on where you go and what you do. Plan accordingly. 

3. Team up with other travelers to share boats between islands

It's possible to take public boats between all three Gili Islands, but they don't run very frequently – usually just a couple times per day – and plans are subject to change. If you're looking to travel on the fly, or completely on your own schedule, the best way to move between the Gili Islands is to team up with other travelers and share a private boat transfer. Walk down to the port and chat up some of the friendly boatmen waiting for your business, preferably with a friend or two to split the cost. Expect to pay around 300,000Rp for the entire boat for a one-way, depending on your negotiation abilities.

4. Dress and behave respectfully 

While you explore the Gili Islands, you might encounter a few signs that say "no swimwear in the village" – or simply a picture of a bikini with a big red no symbol on top of it. Most residents of the Gili Islands are Muslim, and dressing modestly is important for traveling respectfully. There's no issue rocking swim trunks or a bikini when you're actually at the beach – but cover up when you're heading inland, especially when passing through residential areas. Keep a big t-shirt and sarong in your bag, and you'll be good to go.

5. Check the calendar for any holidays

There are two holidays to be aware of, both bring different experiences in the Gili Islands: Ramadan, a Muslim holiday, and Nyepi, a Balinese holiday. Ramadan is usually around March or April where people fast from sunrise to sunset each day for a month. You can still travel to the Gili Islands, but be advised that some businesses will close earlier and parties are limited during this time. During Nyepi, Bali's day of silence which typically falls the first or second week of March, the entire island shuts down – leading many travelers to head to the Gili Islands where businesses remain open. This can make things pretty busy for two or three days over Nyepi.

6. Lock up your bicycle when you're not using it

You won't find any motorized vehicles on the Gili Islands, where the best method of transportation is either via foot or bicycle. Petty theft isn't all that common – but locking your bike whenever you're not using it is a best practice just in case. Insurance for bike theft isn't really a thing here, so if someone were to roam off with it, you'd be on the hook for covering the cost. Most folks simply put the lock around their tire rather than fastening it to a stationary object.

7. Always drink purified water 

Tap water is not safe for consumption across Indonesia so always only drink water you’ve either purified yourself; you have purchased in a sealed bottle; or have refilled your reusable from a clean water source to stay hydrated. A lot of people brush their teeth with the tap water without experiencing any issues, but if you're really concerned, use bottled water for that too.

8. Watch out for mosquitos

Catching dengue fever is the biggest risk from mosquito bites here – not to mention uncomfortable itchiness. Mosquitos are a year-round experience in the Gili Islands, slightly less so during the dry season from roughly June until October. The best way to prevent bites or mosquito-induced illness is by preparing yourself with bug spray, especially around dusk.

9. Drugs are illegal in Indonesia

You might've heard stories of magic mushrooms in the Gilis from other travelers – and it's true, several beachside cafes openly advertise the sale of magic mushrooms despite the fact that Indonesia has strong anti-drug laws. It's not uncommon to get offers for "magic shakes" or mushrooms while walking on the street, either. Do beware: Indonesia has extremely strict laws against illicit substances, including mushrooms.

Intoxication or possession is punishable by lengthy imprisonment (or worse!). According to Indonesia's tourism board , "Possession is punishable by 4 to 12 years of imprisonment. There is also IDR 800 million to 8 billion (US$89,600 to US$896,000) worth of fines."

10. Stick to beer and wine if you want to drink

Throughout the years, there have been countless reports of travelers in Indonesia becoming ill due to methanol poisoning from alcoholic spirits. The consumption of this illegal tainted alcohol – which has occurred even in fancy, upscale resorts – can cause severe illness, blindness, or even death. Methanol-tainted alcohol is typically the result of cost cutting, oftentimes far earlier in the supply chain before bars and restaurants have any say in the matter. The safest way to get a buzz is by drinking beer or wine, so load up on the Bintang beers or get champagne tipsy all day long.

11. Head west for sunset 

When the fiery sun begins to descend closer to the horizon, make your way west. Regardless of whether you're on Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, or Gili Air – the best sunset views are on the west coast, accompanied by views of Bali's towering Gunung Agung volcano off in the distance. It's the best way to slip into the evening, typically accompanied by sherbet-colored hues in the sky and good vibes.

The Perfect 7-Day Japan Itinerary for First-Time Visitors

Japan captured my heart from the moment I firs visited. The delicious food, the rich culture, breathtaking landscapes, vibrant history, and the very friendly and polite people – it all blew my mind.

But Japan often feels impenetrable, especially to first-time visitors. While I think Japan deserves a minimum of 10 days, I get that some people might only have a week, so I wanted to write this, my ideal seven-day itinerary for Japan for a first-time visitor.

With only a week, there’s not much you can see unless you really rush it. And I don’t think you should do that.

So this itinerary only focuses on Tokyo and Kyoto (the most popular destinations) as well as some day trips from each. If you wanted to rush things a little, you could add in Osaka (more on that at the end).

(Note: If you purchased a Japan Rail Pass , activate it on arrival. That way, you can take advantage of the free JR trains throughout the city.)

Tsukiji and Toyosu Fish Markets Cure your jet lag with some food! In 2018, Tokyo’s main fish market moved to Toyosu. It is now twice the size of Tsukiji (the old one), making it the largest such market in the world. Here you can eat fresh sushi for breakfast, just a few feet from where it was hauled in from the sea, while marveling at the chaotic atmosphere.

You can still head to the old market in Tsukiji to eat, shop, and wander as well. I like it a lot, because there are more food options! Food and drink tours of the Tsukiji Outer Market are available for around 15,000 JPY.

Toyosu Fish Market is open Monday-Saturday 5am-5pm, though most shops don’t open until 7am. Admission is free, but you have to pick up a visitor’s pass when you enter. Tsukiji Fish Market’s hours vary by shop (usually 5am-2pm). Admission is free.

teamLab Planets This digital art installation is a multi-sensory and immersive experience in which you become part of the artwork, walking barefoot through the four exhibition spaces and gardens as you interact with the installations’ elements in unique ways. It’s really fun! TeamLab is generally sells out in advance, so I recommend getting your tickets online ahead of time .

Take a walking tour Walking tours are a great way to get the lay of the land while connecting with a local guide. I always go on one or two when I arrive somewhere. Tokyo Localized offers many free tours, including a classic overview and ones of both the famed Harajuku and Shinjuku neighborhoods. Its Imperial Palace tour would be the most convenient one after teamLab.

The Imperial Palace Formerly Edo Castle, the Imperial Palace was built in the 15th century, and some of the walls and moats from that time are still in use to this day. When the emperor moved from Kyoto to Tokyo in 1869, he took Edo for his new palace and renamed it. While you can’t go inside, it is surrounded by beautiful grounds, a moat, and a park worth wandering through. You can also see the changing-of-the-guard ceremony (though it’s relatively low-key and unassuming). Admission to the grounds is free.

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden This park is over 144 acres and home to some 20,000 trees. Most of the original park was destroyed in World War II but was rebuilt and reopened in 1949. During spring, it is one of the best places to see cherry blossoms. My favorite area is the landscape garden, which has several ponds with bridges and islands. It’s a peaceful oasis away from the urban hustle and bustle.

Depending on how you feel relative to your jetlag, you could fit a few more activities before you end your day. Check out this post for suggestions .

• Senso-ji – This is Tokyo’s most popular and famous temple. Beautifully painted, it sits in a scenic spot near a pagoda and the lovely Kaminari Gate. There’s a huge statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, inside the main hall. It’s very busy during the day, so maybe check out the grounds in the evening.
• Asakusa Shrine – This nearby Shinto shrine is much more peaceful, with fewer visitors, but with people praying, meditating, or performing traditional rituals. It was built during the Edo period (1603–1868) and survived the air raids of World War II.

Afterward, head to Ueno Park . Spanning over 133 acres, Ueno Park was established in 1873 on land formerly owned by a 17th-century Buddhist temple. It gets super busy in cherry blossom season, as there are over a thousand trees here. Throughout, you’ll find various stalls and vendors selling snacks, drinks, and souvenirs. On weekends, there are usually cultural events or festivals showcasing traditional arts, music, and dance. Four of Tokyo’s main museums are here:

• Tokyo National Museum – Established in 1872 on the north end, this massive building is the oldest and largest art museum in Japan. It houses one of the world’s largest collections of art and artifacts from Asia, particularly Japan.
• Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum – This museum showcases rotating exhibitions of contemporary and traditional Japanese art.
• National Museum of Nature and Science – This museum features a wide range of permanent and temporary exhibitions covering natural science and history.
• Tosho-gu Shrine – This beautiful 17th-century Shinto shrine has carved gold doors and other ornate carvings. It’s worth seeing up close!

Afterward, walk down to Akihabara to explore the video game parlors, arcades, and anime shops. This very buzzy area is ground zero for all things electronic, and it’s fun to play many of the games. This is where you’ll find the famous maid cafés, where servers dress up as maids and serve you food and drinks. These range from big touristy ones to holes-in-the-wall (the girls on the street are promoting the latter, which are a lot more culturally fun). They aren’t cheap, though, as you have to buy drink packages and pay a fee, but they’re kitschy and fun.

In the evening, visit Shinjuku and then drink in Golden Gai . In Shinjuku, you’ll find a plethora of cool bars, bright lights, and tiny hole-in-the-wall eateries. Be sure to wander down Memory Lane (aka Piss Alley) for tiny izakaya joints and bars. Afterward, head over to Golden Gai, a warren of narrow alleyways with a bit of a red-light-district feel, flanked by diminutive backstreet bars. It’s quite touristy but also a lot of fun. I’ve had some wild nights here!

With Arigato Tours , you’ll learn about the neighborhood while stopping to sample Japanese classics like sushi, yakitori, and ramen. The 23,900 JPY cost includes a drink and dishes at four stops.  

Kamakura Here you can see a 13-meter (43-foot) bronze statue of Buddha that was built in 1252. It was initially constructed within Kotoku-in Temple, but that has since been washed away by several storms, so it now sits in the open air. Admission to enter the temple grounds is 300 JPY, while it’s 20 JPY to go inside the statue. The journey there — around an hour — is free with a Japan Rail Pass .

Tokyo Disneyland I’m a sucker for Disney. You’ll find many of the same classic rides from Disney World here, like Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, The Haunted Mansion, and everyone’s favorite teacup ride, The Mad Tea Party. But there are several unique attractions as well, like Pooh’s Hunny Hunt and Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Ticket prices vary depending on the day and time, but full-day admission begins at 7,900 JPY for adults and 4,400-6,200 JPY for children. It’s best to book in advance .

Mount Fuji Mount Fuji is located an hour outside of Tokyo. An active stratovolcano (which last erupted in 1708) and covered in snow for almost half of the year, it stands an impressive 3,776 meters (12,389 feet) and provides one of the most iconic views in the country. One of the Three Holy Mountains of Japan, Mount Fuji is both a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and a UNESCO Cultural Site. In the summer, the mountain is open to hikers, who take 5-12 hours to reach the summit (traditionally, they depart at night to arrive at the top for the sunrise).

If you don’t want to hike, you can simply visit on a day trip. There are buses that can take you partway up, where you’ll be offered sweeping vistas of the surrounding area. Guided day tours from the city cost around 12,000 JPY.  

Wander the Bamboo Forest For a relaxing break, head to Arashiyama and let the dense and towering stands of bamboo envelop you. Located near the famous Tenryu-ji temple, it’s one of the most beautiful places in the entire country. It’s not that big, but there are some hidden areas to explore. Just make sure to arrive early if you want to enjoy it without the crowds (it fills up fast after sunrise).

While there, I would also recommend visiting the Okochi Sanso Garden, which (along with the home) belonged to the famous Japanese actor Denjir? ?k?chi (1898–1962). It’s not free (it’s 1,000 JPY), but it’s really nice and has some wonderful views.

Visit the Golden Pavilion Originally built in the late 14th century as a retirement villa for the shogun (military governor), this iconic structure was later converted into a Zen Buddhist temple. The present-day edifice dates only to the 1950s, however, when a monk attempting to kill himself burned the historic original to the ground. The rebuilt temple is covered in brilliant gold leaf, symbolizing purity and enlightenment. Each of the three stories exhibits a different architectural style. Completing the scene are the serene reflecting pool and traditional Japanese gardens that contain lush foliage, manicured trees, and scenic walking paths.

Admire Ryoan-ji Temple This is my favorite temple in Kyoto. Originally established in 1450 as a residence for a high-ranking samurai, it was soon converted into a Zen temple and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a mausoleum that houses the remains of seven emperors. Its traditional rock and sand garden is considered one of the best in the country. There’s also a teahouse where you can experience the traditional Japanese tea ceremony ( chanoyu ) as you overlook the Kyoyochi reflecting pool.

There are other temples in the area to check out as well:

• Daitoku-ji Temple – This massive complex dating back to 1315 covers almost 60 acres. It contains several dozen temples and is a good place to see a variety of Zen gardens and architectural styles. It’s also deeply linked to the Japanese tea ceremony, as several of the country’s most noteworthy masters studied here.
• Toji Temple – This is home to Japan’s tallest pagoda (five stories high). Founded in 796, just after Kyoto became the capital, it was one of only three Buddhist temples allowed in the city.

Go on a sake brewery tour Kyoto has a sake (rice wine) brewing tradition going back 400 years and is known for some of the best in the world, due to using the area’s pure natural spring water in the brewing process. Arigato Tours offers an excellent three-hour tour of Fushimi (the brewing district) for 23,320 JPY, including stops at several breweries, a guided tour of the Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum, and tastings.  

See the Fushimi Inari Shrine This mountainside Shinto shrine, dating back to 711, is dedicated to Inari, the god of rice and prosperity. It’s known for its thousands of vibrant orange torii gates that form a network of trails leading up Mount Inari. You can hike the trails on your own while enjoying panoramic views of Kyoto below or join a guided hiking tour , on which you’ll get off the paved paths and into hidden bamboo groves. Get here as early as possible to avoid the crowds.

Walk around Higashiyama Spend an afternoon walking along the narrow streets of one of the oldest and best preserved districts on your own or on a walking tour . The traditional machiya buildings (traditional wooden townhouses) are filled with small shops selling local specialties and handicrafts, as well as restaurants and teahouses. It’s a popular area in which to participate in a tea ceremony . Another nice place to stroll in this neighborhood is the Philosopher’s Path, which follows a cherry-tree-lined canal that’s beautiful and meditative even when the blossoms aren’t in season.

Visit Kiyomizu-dera One of a number of UNESCO sites in ancient Kyoto, Kiyomizu-dera (meaning “pure water temple”) is located in the foothills of Mount Otowa in the eastern part of the city. It’s one of the most famous temples in all of Japan. It was established in 778, but most of the existing buildings date to the 17th century. There’s not a single nail used in the construction, which becomes all the more impressive once you see how large the temple is, which is best known for its wooden terrace that juts out over the hillside. The temple’s name comes from the nearby waterfall whose waters (from which you can still drink today) are said to have wish-granting and healing powers.

Explore Shorin-ji Temple This small temple dates back to the 16th century. What makes it worth visiting is its meditation classes. You’ll get to tour the temple and then be instructed in zazen , the Japanese style of meditation. It’s a very unique experience and something that I think will add a lot of depth and nuance to your visit (especially if you’ve seen a lot of temples). Just make sure to dress comfortably.

Wander the Nishiki Market Nishiki Ichiba is now one of the biggest indoor markets in town. Known as “Kyoto’s Kitchen” and spanning over five blocks, it is full of vendors selling traditional dishes from the region, classic Kyoto souvenirs, and really just about anything else. There are over a hundred stalls here, many of which have been in the same family for generations. Opening hours depend on the shop but are typically from 9am to 6pm.

To dive deeper into Japanese food culture, you can take a food tour of the market . It’s the best way to learn about all the food you’ll see, as well as the market’s history.

Explore Gion Gion, the historic geisha district, is renowned as being one of the most iconic and atmospheric areas of town. It’s known for its traditional wooden machiya houses, narrow alleyways, cobblestone streets, and preservation of geisha (known locally as geiko) culture. Lining the main street are ochayas (teahouses where geishas entertain), small shops, and many restaurants, ranging from upscale kaiseki restaurants serving traditional Kyoto cuisine to casual eateries.

To really learn more about this amazing party of town and its past, take a walking tour of Gion . You’ll learn a ton and get a lot of context. They cost around 1,800 JPY.

At night, go to the Pontocho Row , a narrow street lined with restaurants, hole-in-the-wall bars, and jazz clubs. It’s one of the more lively areas in Kyoto.  

Nara was the capital of Japan in the eighth century, so there are lots of buildings and temples here that are upwards of a thousand years old (which is rare in Japan, due to the prevalence of fires and earthquakes, as well as World War II). Some things to do:

• Frolic with deer – The real draw in Nara are the deer. Since the 17th century, those in and around the city have been considered sacred. You can buy crackers to feed them or just watch them stroll around carefree.
• See the Buddha – Don’t miss a visit to Todai-ji, the world’s largest wooden building, home to a 16-meter (52-foot) Buddha statue. It was built in 738 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
• Take a walking tour – This guided half-day walking tour for 11,500 JPY includes all of Nara’s highlights as well as a traditional lunch.

Ryogoku Kokugikan, Japan’s most famous sumo wrestling arena, hosts tournaments three times each year, in January, May, and September. Tickets sell out quickly, so book online in advance. Prices vary but start around 3,200 JPY for arena seats. You can book a ticket online here (you’ll be accompanied by a guide too, so you can learn more about the tradition as it unfolds before your eyes).

Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nara are all covered above. As for Osaka, some of my favorite things to see and do:

Take a food tour Known as “the Kitchen of Japan,” Osaka boasts a diverse culinary scene. Mouthwatering sushi and sashimi, Kobe beef and Japanese BBQ, and flavorful ramen can all be found here in abundance. Plus, there are local specialties like okonomiyaki (a savory pancake with egg and vegetables) and kushikatsu (kebab skewers). You can take a food tour for around 13,000 JPY, a ramen and gyoza cooking class for 9,500 JPY, or just wander and eat.

Osaka Castle One of the most famous landmarks in the country, the castle was originally built in the late 16th century by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and played a pivotal role in the unification of Japan during the Sengoku period (1467-1615). Over the centuries, it has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times due to wars, fires, and natural disasters. The current version dates to 1931. The castle is situated amid sprawling grounds and surrounded by a moat. It’s also home to a small but insightful museum and an observation deck that offers some picturesque urban views.

Dotonbori This is arguably Osaka’s most iconic district, known for its vibrant nightlife (bars, clubs, theaters, and music venues), colorful signage, and delicious food. It’s best seen at night due to the plethora of huge neon lights and signs lining both the canal and streets, which have become symbols of Osaka’s nightlife. A guided walking tour that includes Dotonbori as well adjacent neighborhoods is 6,500 JPY.

Shitennoji Temple This temple is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan, founded in 593. The architecture is a blend of traditional Japanese and East Asian styles, featuring impressive pagodas, gates, and shrines set amid serene gardens. Stroll through the tranquil grounds, admire the beautiful architecture, and learn about the temple’s historical and cultural significance at the museum. The temple is 300 JPY to enter, the garden is 300 JPY, and the museum is 500 JPY.  

Japan is one of my favorite countries. While it’s relatively small, it offers an amazing array of things to see and do (as well as some of the best food in the world). With seven days, you can easily see a good number of the main highlights and get a taste for the incredible history and culture. It will be a busy week, but this itinerary ensures you’ll still have some time to slow down, relax, and take in the local pace of life.

Just make sure you get a Japan Rail Pass before you go. While it’s not as cheap as it used to be, it will likely save you time and money!

“Changes in the number of outdoor days will impact directly how people around the world feel climate change,” MIT environmental engineering professor Elfatih Eltahir told Bloomberg.  

At the same time, the Ivory Coast in West Africa will lose outdoor days due to scorching hot temperatures. “There is a clear disparity between the Global North and the Global South,” Yeonwoo Choi, a postdoctoral researcher at MIT and member of the research team, told Bloomberg. Popular tropical locales like the Dominican Republic will suffer the greatest decline in temperate, year-round weather, with 124 fewer outdoor days per year, while Mexico, India, Thailand, and Egypt will lose between 55 and 86 outdoor days annually.  

Similarly, the United Arab Emirates is predicted to lose 85 outdoor days, and Mediterranean hotspots like Greece are in the same boat. Due to blistering heatwaves between May and September, coupled with increased droughts and wildfires, the study estimates that Greece will lose more than 30 outdoor days by the year 2100.

Google reveals top destinations for summer vacation 2024

For anyone feeling a sudden urge for summer wanderlust, Google unveiled its top 20 destinations that travelers have already taken an interest in for any upcoming warm weather getaways.

From domestic to international locations, Google shared insights based on past flight booking data and search trends with "Good Morning America" to help people start planning summer vacation spots or shape an ideal itinerary.

Much like snubs and surprises during awards season, there are a couple of places that fell out of favor since last year as well as some new additions that made this year's list.

Top summer 2024 destinations on Google flights

The search engine technology company said the list reflects people in the U.S. searching on Google Flights for travel anytime between June 1 through August 31, 2024.

Cancun, which previously came in at number one during summer, dropped to number six, while Tokyo is on the rise, with Madrid and San Juan new to the summer location lineup.

The biggest change from 2023, according to Google, is that Cancun moved down from the number two spot to number six, while Tokyo rose from number eight to number three.

Newcomers to the top destinations list include San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Madrid, Spain. Chicago and San Francisco didn't make the top 20 this year.

Travel trends on Google search

Google gathers insights from mid-January to mid-March from U.S. users to find out what travel-related queries are top of mind ahead of summer.

Searches for "travel itinerary" and "solo travel" reached an all-time high in January.

Two of the top trending "weekend getaway" destinations are Palm Springs and Florida Keys.

The top trending "romantic getaway" destinations were Napa, the famed California wine country, and Key West, home to the southernmost point in the Continental U.S. with historic landmarks.

Finally, La Romana and Saint John were the top trending destinations searched with all-inclusive resorts.

India travel trends: Search for spiritual destinations surges 97%, Delhi scores high in inquiries

S piritual destinations are stealing the show in India's travel market with such locations recording a 97 percent surge in searches in the last two years, according to an analysis by online travel aggregator (OTA) MakeMyTrip.

Searches for Ayodhya grew 585 percent, Ujjain by 359 percent and Badrinath by 343 percent in 2023 over the previous year, said the report launched by the OTA on April 22.  Tier-2 and tier-3 cities are embracing spiritual journeys, it added.

The report also added that people taking more than three trips per year has grown by 25 percent in 2023 as compared to 2019.

Where India travels

On the international front, 30 percent of all foreign travel searches from India are for Dubai, Bangkok and Singapore, while London, Toronto and New York are the most searched long-haul destinations.

Searches for emerging international destinations grew by multi-fold in 2023 and the hot favourites include Hong Kong, Almaty, Paro, Baku, Da Nang and Tbilisi. Travel to unexplored destinations has increased which has led to over 30 percent growth in searches for 16 emerging destinations. As many as 31 unique destinations contribute to 60 percent of searches from all six metros including Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai.

Delhi NCR and Goa are the most searched destination from all six metros. Delhi has the highest share in terms of searches in 2023 at 11.4 percent, followed by Mumbai at 7.2 percent, Bengaluru at 5.4 percent, and Goa at 5.3 percent.

In the domestic flights category, tier II cities have emerged as the highest growth destinations. Lucknow, Thiruvananthapuram Indore and Bhubaneshwar lead with maximum searches.

Travel sentiment touched an all-time high in November 2022 with seven out of 10 people planning travel, the OTA said. It added that there has been 45 percent growth in searches as compared to the pre-pandemic period. As many as 100 million people are actively searching for travel on MakeMyTrip platform annually.

How India travels

Family travel bookings surged by 64 percent in 2023 as compared to 2022, followed by solo travel booking a 23 percent growth.

Indians continue to make last minute travel plans with a significant portion of travel bookings in India are made spontaneously, with 46 percent of domestic flights booked less than a week before the travel date. On the other hand, about half of all international bookings are made at least two weeks in advance. Only one-third of international bookings are made more than a month before the travel date, suggesting a flexible approach to international travel planning among Indian travellers.

For flight bookings, women prefer to pre-book window seats and men pick aisle seats. Tomato cucumber cheese lettuce sandwich is the most ordered in-flight meal on domestic flights. Vegetarian Hindu meal is the most ordered in-flight meal on international flights.

Delhi travellers are over-indexed on booking domestic flights less than a week ahead of travel date while travellers from Kolkata have a higher inclination to book flights over three months in advance for both international and domestic destinations.

Where India stays

Alternative accommodations including homestays and villas recorded 24 percent growth in bookings in 2023 on MakeMyTrip as Indians are searching for stays that provide an emotional connection with culture and nature, the platform said.

Hostels and apartments recorded maximum search growth of 39 percent and 31 percent respectively in 2023.

For hostels and apartments, the preference is for those properties which cost less than Rs 2,500 per night but for villas, it is higher. Close to 20 percent of family travellers searched for properties with tariffs over Rs 10,000 per night last year.

More than 50 percent of the family travellers and 75 percent of the solo travellers booked a property for stay below Rs 4,500 .

Weekend getaways emerged as the highest growth destinations in the domestic hotels category. Jim Corbett leads with 131 percent growth in searches on MakeMyTrip followed by Ooty and Munnar. A large number of these hotel customers are driving to these destinations from nearby metros.

People from Maharashtra contribute to highest domestic hotel searches. Travellers from Maharashtra, Kerala and Karnataka searched more for villas while maximum searches were done for hostels in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Goa.

2 Days in Venice Itinerary: Highlights and Hidden Gems

Do you fantasize about visiting Venice, but worry it will be an over-touristed nightmare instead of a dream? I had the same fear when crafting my 2 days in Venice itinerary. People have been waxing poetic about Italy’s floating city for centuries. But does it actually live up to the hype?

Well, I have good news for you! Venice can be a truly unique, otherworldly travel experience if you do it right. Or, you can spend 2 days in Venice walking from tourist attraction to tourist attraction, and leave with a lingering sense of disappointment.

If you want the best of both worlds–to see the famous sites AND the authentic side of the city–this Venice itinerary is for you. It covers the must-sees, like Piazza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge, but also the Venice hidden gems that lie just beyond the beaten path.

The best time to do this Venice itinerary

Personally, I think the best time to visit Venice is mid-late October . It’s the autumn shoulder season, which comes with reduced crowds, cheaper accommodation, and mild weather. We did this 2 days in Venice itinerary during the third week of October, and the only place that felt crowded was the Rialto Bridge.

If you’re planning your Venice trip for a different month, here’s what you can expect:

• February: The famous Carnival takes over Venice for nearly all of February. It’s certainly the most festive time to visit, but also the most crowded and expensive!
• March – Early May: Spring is shoulder season, with mild weather starting at 13°C/55°F in March and climbing to 22°C/72°F in May. Avoid May 1st if you can, as the public holiday sees an influx of visitors.
• Late May – Mid September: This is peak season in Venice, with August being downright crazy as Europeans take their summer holidays. Expect long queues, inflated prices for everything, and crowds galore. I’ve also heard the hot weather (28°C/82°F in August) causes the canals to smell.
• Late September – October: As temperatures wind down–October average high is 18°C/64°F–so does Venice. As mentioned above, late October is a fantastic time to visit Venice thanks to lower crowds and prices.
• November – January: Venice makes for a great winter travel destination in Europe if you don’t mind the cold. In fact, this time of year brings ethereal morning fogs that make Venice feel even more mysterious. The city also puts on a big New Year’s Eve fireworks festival at Piazza San Marco.

Can you walk all of Venice?

You can walk nearly all of Venice. The main cluster of islands are all connected by bridges, and you can (fairly) easily walk everywhere included in this Venice itinerary. In fact, I believe the best way to see Venice is on foot rather than by boat (shocking, I know)!

Navigating through the city’s narrow alleys and footbridges is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. The closest thing I can compare it to is a hedge maze, but with beautiful surprises around every corner.

Also, you cannot rely on Google Maps to get around Venice. While it’s helpful to get your general bearings, the GPS on your phone will struggle to pick up your exact location. And sometimes, the suggested walking route will tell you to cross canals where there are no bridges. Embrace the explorer spirit and you’ll have a great time!

Note that there are a few smaller islands, like Giudecca and Burano, that are only reachable by ferry. However, these are not included in my 2 day Venice itinerary.

Is 2 days in Venice enough?

A full 48 hours in Venice is just enough time to see the highlights and a few hidden gems. For perspective: we arrived in Venice around 10am on day one, and left at the same time on day three.

While we didn’t do much the morning of our departure (aside from take a ton of hazy sunrise photos), spending two nights in Venice allowed us to see the city at a relaxed pace.

Spending an extra day in Venice wouldn’t hurt, though. I would have loved to take a day trip to Murano and Burano if we had more time! Plus, I believe Italy is a country best enjoyed at a relaxed pace.

Deciding where to stay in Venice is a balancing act between cost, location, and quality. I spent hours looking for the perfect hotel in Venice, and landed on Hotel Locanda Canal .

Hotel Locanda Canal  sits on a quiet street within a five minute walk of Piazza San Marco. Our spacious room overlooked the canal below, and was elegantly decorated with antique wood furniture and a huge, comfy bed. There were plenty of cafes and restaurants nearby, and it was the perfect home base for our two days in Venice itinerary.

Hotels in Venice fill up quickly, especially during high season. If you wait until the last minute to book a place, you’ll either end up paying a fortune or staying in a less-than-desirable hotel.

Explore the alleys of Cannaregio

If you’re anything like me, you’ll be itching to explore Venice the moment you arrive. Fortunately, Cannaregio–the neighborhood just outside of the train station–is the perfect place to kick off your 2 days in Venice itinerary.

If you’d rather go straight to your hotel with your luggage, I suggest booking a water taxi from the airport   or train station. You can pick up this itinerary after you’ve dropped off your bags.

For nearly 300 years , this expansive northern district served as the Jewish ghetto of Venice. Napoleon’s troops brought an end to the segregation at the very end of the 18th century, but the neighborhood remains an important place for Venetian Jews.

It’s also home to some of the prettiest alleys in Venice. Most visitors tend to rush from the train station straight to the Piazza San Marco, leaving Cannaregio’s alleys blissfully uncrowded.

As you meander to your heart’s content, be sure to stop by the Campo del Ghetto Nuovo, where you’ll find several old synagogues, a WWII memorial, and the Jewish Museum of Venice. There’s a ton of history in Cannaregio, and taking a tour with a local is the best way to uncover its secrets.

Grab lunch in a cone at Frito Inn and Gelato di Natura

Before you leave Cannaregio, I highly recommend having a unique lunch combo: fried seafood and gelato. Venice is famous for its fritto misto , and the Frito Inn serves up choice morsels in a very Instagrammable cone. I highly recommend the shrimp and squid combo.

Continuing with the cone theme, head up the street to Gelato di Natura. We sampled a lot of gelato in Venice, and this shop was definitely the best for creamy texture and rich flavor. They have multiple locations throughout Venice, so you’ll have other chances to try them if you’re too full!

If you’ve been traveling with your luggage up until now, head to your accommodation to drop off your bags. Then, resume this itinerary from the Bridge of Sighs.

Bridge of Sighs

Aside from the Rialto Bridge, the Bridge of Sighs is probably the most famous bridge in Venice. If you thought the name comes from onlookers “sighing” at the bridge’s beauty (like I did), I’m sorry to say it’s much darker than that!

While this pretty covered passage looks lovely, it had a far less romantic purpose: to connect the Doge’s Palace interrogation room to the Venetian prison. The “sighs” came from the prisoners taking one last look out at their beautiful city as they were escorted to a damp cell.

Disturbing history aside, the Ponte dei Sospiri  is truly stunning, especially when gondolas pass beneath its white arch. Be prepared to jockey for a good position on the Ponte della Paglia, which offers the best view of the Bridge of Sighs.

At this point, you’ll be right next to the Piazza San Marco, the beating heart of Venice. However, the area will be incredibly crowded at midday, so it’s best to simply pass through on your way to the next item on this 2 day Venice itinerary. You’ll have plenty of chances to explore the Piazza later when it’s less busy.

Campo Santo Stefano

You’ll come across dozens of campi –town squares–in Venice. These open spaces are a nice contrast to the city’s narrow alleys, and they’re home to bustling shops, cafes, and restaurants serving locals and visitors alike.

Campo Santo Stefano is one of the largest, with multiple churches and brightly painted facades. The alleys jutting out from the campo are also a joy to explore, especially the canal view at the end of Calle dell’Olio.

Take a classic Venice canal ride

Venice and gondola rides go together like peanut butter and jelly. And while I do think exploring Venice on foot is best, taking a canal ride is a must have Venice experience.

Now, the type of canal ride you choose depends on two things: budget and atmosphere.

If you want a classic, romantic gondola ride that doesn’t involve random tourists, you should book a private gondola. It may be the most expensive option, but it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

This private gondola ride starts at Campo Santo Stefano and fits perfectly with this Venice itinerary. Booking ahead saves you money and ensures you won’t be stuck in a queue, which is common during high season.

There are also shared gondola rides, which are a bit cheaper than private ones. However, you’ll be riding with strangers and aren’t guaranteed to sit next to your travel partner(s).

Finally, the cheapest option is to take a vaporetto, the public transit of Venice. These mid-size boats travel around the main canals to quickly transport people around the island. It’s not exactly an intimate experience, but fares only cost about 8 euros, so they’re a good way to take a Venice canal ride on a budget.

Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute

You’ve probably caught glimpses of the gorgeous Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute from across the Grand Canal. But it’s not just the ornate domed exterior that’s worth your attention.

The basilica houses an impressive collection of 12 paintings by Titian, a renowned Renaissance artist. Between the patterned tile floor and light-filled ceilings, you’ll be close to swooning over the visual delights. It’s free to enter the main basilica, and 4 euros to visit the Sacristy where Titian’s artwork is displayed.

In terms of how to get here from Campo Santo Stefano, you have two options. Either take a 15 minute walk, crossing the Ponte dell’Accademia and heading east. Or, you could take the #1 vaporetto line from Giglio to Salute, the pier directly outside the basilica.

Ponte Dell’Accademia

Unlike the other famous bridges of Venice, the Ponte Dell’Accademia is better known for its view rather than its architecture. From atop the bridge, you’ll have two spectacular views of the Grand Canal and surrounding city.

Looking east, you’ll see the postcard view of Venice that’s pictured above. It’s absolutely stunning at sunset and twilight, as boats and gondolas pass along the canal and out towards the open water. Photographers should bring a tripod for beautiful long exposure shots (or use the railing in a pinch).

Facing west, there’s a lovely view of the Grand Canal as it curves around colorful buildings. Remember to visit both sides of the bridge to admire each unique vantage point!

Go for a sunset walk along the Grand Canal

There’s something magical about the evening light in Venice. Sunsets take on beautiful hues of orange and purple, and the water turns a deep blue. It’s the perfect time for a stroll along the Grand Canal.

You could walk from Gongulo station all the way down to the Giardini Della Biennale, or stop somewhere in between. I also suggest popping into the Piazza San Marco after sunset. The illuminated lamps and outdoor live music are a must see.

Enjoy Piazza San Marco without the crowds

At this point, you’ve probably passed by St. Mark’s Square numerous times. But believe me–you need to come back in the early morning, before it fills up with day trippers and tourists.

We did a sunrise stroll around the piazza on both of our 2 days in Venice, and it was glorious. It’s much easier to enjoy the ornate facades of the Doge’s Palace and St. Mark’s Basilica without dodging tour groups and selfie-takers.

If you time things just right, you can have a morning espresso at Cafe Florian, the world’s oldest coffee shop. And speaking of time, remember to look up at the astrological clock tower before you head to the next destination.

Tour the Doge’s Palace and St. Mark’s Basilica

The Doge’s Palace and Basilica di San Marco are easily the top attractions in Venice. Marble floors, gilded walls, dazzling frescoes… each place is opulent in its own way, and deserves to be savored.

As you might imagine, they also get busy very quickly after opening. Luckily, there are a few tricks to bypass the queue and get in early.

If you want to get a dose of history along with speedy entry, you can book a combined fast-track tour of the Doge’s Palace and St. Mark’s Basilica   (this one also comes with access to the Bridge of Sighs!).

Alternatively, you could explore the basilica as soon as it opens (9:30am on weekdays). The main basilica is free to enter, but the St. Mark’s Museum, treasury, and Pala d’Oro each have separate admission fees ranging from 2-5 euros.  Once you’ve finished inside the basilica, you can use a skip-the-line ticket to enter the Doge’s Palace.

The Doge’s Palace, a.k.a. the Palazzo Ducale, was constructed in the 14th century. The stunning Gothic architecture and interior museum exhibits are the perfect window into Venice’s glorious and lavish past.

Libreria Acqua Alta

Going to an old bookshop might seem like an unusual thing to do in Venice in two days, but trust me–this one is worth your time.

Thanks to its unique rear staircase made of books, Libreria Acqua Alta is one of the top Instagram spots in Venice. The steps lead to a lovely canal view that I won’t spoil for you here…

Inside, you’ll find another fun surprise: cats! This bookshop is home to several laid back felines, and the store doubles down on the cat theme with postcards, artwork, and books. It’s a great spot to pick up some Venice souvenirs (we brought home a cat postcard and a hand-painted magnet).

Venetian Arsenal

When my husband reviewed my tentative 2 days in Venice itinerary, he was shocked that I hadn’t included the Venetian Arsenal.

In case medieval European history isn’t your forte either, the Venetian Arsenal was a mass production line for ships, both private and for war. By the 1600s, it was so efficient, it could craft an entire merchant vessel in a single day. Even now, the huge bridges and gates remain an impressive sight.

Today, the Arsenale di Venezia is used for cultural events and exhibitions. But the surrounding area has multiple museums dedicated to Venice’s naval history, as well as a large docked warship open to the public. The nearby alleys also make for a nice escape from the crowds.

Rialto Bridge

The Rialto Bridge is to Venice what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris. This iconic piece of architecture has been the subject of countless paintings, postcards, and even poems. It’s an essential place to visit in Venice, even if it is over-touristed.

The Rialto started out as a humble pontoon bridge in the 1100s and underwent several reconstructions to become what you see today. It’s fascinating to think about how many people have strolled across these very stones.

Walking across the Rialto Bridge in person feels surreal, and the views are extraordinary. However, crossing the bridge is only half the fun. After all, you came to Venice to actually SEE the whole bridge in all its arched glory, right?

Luckily, I know a secret spot for amazing views of the Rialto Bridge. And I’ll tell you exactly how to get there! But first, we’ll make a few stops along the way.

Marvel at free views over Venice at T Fondaco dei Tedeschi

Most people miss this free thing to do in Venice, which is surprising given it’s right next to the Rialto Bridge. Around the corner from the bridge’s southeast side, you’ll find T Fondaco dei Tedeschi, an elegant shopping center with an amazing rooftop terrace.

From up here, you’ll have 360 degree panoramic views over Venice. And unlike St. Mark’s Bell Tower and most other overlook points, this one is totally free! However, an advanced reservation is strongly required, as they cannot guarantee access for walk-ins.

Mercato di Rialto

If you’re fortunate enough to have a kitchen in your Venice accommodation, you need to stop by the Mercato di Rialto to pick up your groceries. This covered market specializes in fresh seafood, with a few stalls dedicated to produce.

Even if you don’t plan to cook, the market itself is a charming, authentic side of Venice that tourists rarely see. Plus, when the vendors close up and hose down the area, it forms tons of puddles that make for fun reflection shots like the one above.

Campo San Cassiano and nearby bridges

As you make your way southwest across the city, take some time to wander around the pretty alleys, bridges, and squares near Campo San Cassiano. This campo isn’t as sprawling as some of the better-known ones, but it has a distinctly local vibe.

Ponte delle Tette offers particularly lovely canal views, and comes with a fun bit of history. It used to be a gathering place for topless ladies of the night during the Renaissance!

Basilica dei Frari

One of my fondest memories from our 2 days in Venice happened in the Campo dei Frari. An elderly man stopped us and said, “This is a very special place. A beautiful church. It’s very important to the people of Venice. It is called the Basilica dei Frari.”

I told him in Italian, “Yes, I understand. Thank you. We go there now.” (My Italian has gotten pretty rusty since university…). And he smiled and said, “Yes, good,” before walking into a nearby cafe.

The moral of the story is that you absolutely need to visit the Basilica dei Frari. Not just because it’s jaw-droppingly beautiful, but also to experience a place that Venetians truly care about.

What I love most about the Frari is the contrast between its simple exterior and grand interior. It reminded me of the churches we saw while sightseeing in Bologna , where you pass through a plain brick facade and immediately have your breath taken away.

Highlights include a towering Titian painting over the altar and an elaborately carved wooden Choir.

Another highlight within the Basilica is the Tomb of Antonio Canova. It’s unmissiable, pyramid-shaped facade is draped with beautiful sculptures, a fitting tribute to the renowned Italian sculptor.

Admission to the Basilica is 3 euros and well worth it.

Campo Santa Margherita

Campo Santa Margherita is a vast square surrounded by colorful bars, restaurants, and shops. In the warmer months, you’ll find plenty of people enjoying a cocktail or meal al fresco .

It’s a great place to take a snack/drink break without feeling claustrophobic.

Discover the secret dock with amazing Rialto views

When it comes to Venice hidden gems, it’s hard to beat this one. At the end of a long, narrow alley–the Calle Traghetto Vecchio–there is a dock with excellent views of the Grand Canal and Rialto Bridge.

If you’re having trouble locating the alley, it’s near Fortuny Palace. The best time to visit is near sunset, when everything is bathed in a warm glow. We had the dock to ourselves for a long while, until we left so that a couple could use it for engagement photos.

Without a doubt, it was my favorite stop during our two days in Venice itinerary.

Splurge on a traditional Venetian dinner at Al Giardinetto da Severino

I don’t always include restaurant recommendations in my itineraries. But Al Giardinetto da Severino deserves a place in this Venice travel guide.

If you’re looking for an authentic Venetian meal with amazing service in a beautiful setting, you need to make a reservation here. Their outdoor terrace is covered in vines and illuminated at night, and the interior is packed with old world charm. I highly recommend the sardines in saor and the tiramisu.

There is plenty to see and do in Venice beyond what’s in this itinerary. If you want to make some substitutions or have an extra day or two in the city, here are a few ideas:

• Burano and Murano: Book a day trip tour to Venice’s smaller islands. Colorful Burano is a photographer’s dream, while Murano is famous for its glass-making tradition.
• Giardini della Biennale: This large public park at the southern end of the Castello neighborhood is perfect for escaping the tourist crowd and experiencing Venice like a local .
• San Giorgio Maggiore: I seriously regret not booking a visit to San Giorgio Maggiore . This incredible complex houses opulent buildings, beautiful grounds, and multiple famous paintings by Tintoretto.
• Fondazione Querini Stampalia: See what life was like in a Venetian palazzo in this preserved historic home of the Querini Stampalia family.

Without a doubt, the best way to explore Venice in 2 days authentically is with a local guide. And no, I don’t mean being dragged around the city with a huge crowd of strangers.

Skip the impersonal mass tour groups and book one of these more intimate options instead:

• Enjoy a traveling opera in a historic palace
• Explore the Jewish Ghetto and sample gelato with a local
• Take an exclusive night tour of the Doge’s Palace

Venice Travel Tips

Italy uses the euro (€). Card payments are widely accepted in Venice, though it’s always a good idea to carry cash, especially for small purchases like gelato and for tipping.

Tipping in Italy is rather complicated, as each region has their own norms. In Venice, most restaurants will charge a coperto, or flat rate cover charge, as part of the bill (usually around €2 per person). There may also be a servizio, or service charge, which is calculated as a percent of the final bill.

Always read the menu and your bill carefully to see if servizio is included! A coperto charge will show up as a line item on your receipt, but it’s not always easy to tell if servizio was added. If you’re charged a servizio, you aren’t obliged to leave a tip.

However, if you’re charged only a coperto, it’s up to you whether to leave an additional tip. For an individual or couple, one euro per person is fine, though you can leave more if you wish.

Venice’s official language is Italian. While pretty much every service worker in Venice speaks English, I always recommend learning a few basic phrases before you arrive.

This 2 days in Venice itinerary won’t require much knowledge of Italian, but saying “hello” and “thank you” in the local language will set you apart from the typical tourist. I also suggest adding Google Translate on your phone and downloading the Italian dictionary.

Here are a few Italian travel phrases you should know:

Getting from Marco Polo Airport to the city center

Marco Polo International Airport is actually located northwest of Venice. There are three ways to get from Venice airport to Venice city center: water taxi, standard taxi, and bus.

The fastest and most unique option is the shared water taxi. You’ll be taken from the airport pier directly to your hotel (or a nearby canal if it’s not central), all with amazing views of Venice as you approach the city.

The cheapest option is via the express bus. You’ll be taken via coach from the airport and dropped off near Venice train station, where all car traffic must end.

You can also take a standard private taxi from the airport to the train station area. However, it’s about the same cost as the shared water taxi and much less exciting!

Traveling into Venice by train

If you’re traveling to Venice by train from the airport or another Italian city, you’ll arrive at Stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia. Most major cities in Italy have direct connections to Venice via high speed trains or regional trains.

High speed train tickets come with reserved seats and space to store luggage, while regional trains do not. You can book tickets online with ItaliaRail , or at the machines inside of the train station.

Stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia sits on the city’s northern edge, with multiple ferry and vaporetto terminals out front. If you have a lot of luggage, you should take a boat that drops off near your accommodation. However, this Venice itinerary assumes you’ll walk from the station.

Despite how it looks on the map, it’s very doable to walk from the train station to the city center with a small amount of luggage. My husband had little trouble walking from the station to Piazza San Marco with a carry-on-sized rolling suitcase (though I had a much easier time with my trusty travel backpack ).
